Thursford Santa’s Magical Journey in to Christmas

Santa’s Magical Journey in to Christmas is located at the Thursford Collection, not far from Fakenham, North Norfolk.

Walk through a fantasy winter wonderland of polar bears, seals, penguins, elves and snowmen on your journey to visit Father Christmas.

Thursford - Santa's Magical Journey

Parent’s View

Purely from a traditional viewpoint I would’ve preferred it if it had been called “Father Christmas’ Magical Journey in to Christmas” but that didn’t detract from this family attraction, which was very nice. It is great for young children, probably up to about 8 years old, but especially for the really young ones who get very excited about Christmas. It was nice to see a few old steam engines dotted along the route, and the animatronic animals went down well with the kids. We have been a couple of times and the presents are pretty good quality, though the boys did want to open theirs straight away!

Thursford - Santa's Magical Journey

There are a couple of restaurants to eat in, but they can get busy around meal times so plan accordingly. Also, on one visit the card reader at one restaurant wasn’t working so we had to resort to cash (we just had enough money for a snack!), so it may be worth having a few pounds just in case.

Duration of visit: 30 minutes walk through the magical journey and seeing Santa, plus maybe an hour plus seeing other features and a quick bite to eat.

Santas Magical Journey

Amazing, fabulous, fantastic. You would run out of superlatives to describe this, I visited this attraction with two children aged 4 and 6 years old. It was necessary to pre-book the tickets and there appeared to be so many people in the building that I thought it would be a 'rush through' experience. How wrong was I! The organisation was superb and the time allocation for the actual visit to the Grotto was brilliantly handled. At no stage were we rushed through the path to Santa's house and the things we saw on the way were wonderful. The children didn't once ask, "When will we see Santa?" they were so enthralled with everything. When we did reach Santa it was so organised that you were the only ones with him and he was great, the children weren't rushed and having received their gifts had their photo taken. Admittedly this does bring in extra revenue should you buy it but there was no pressure to do so. The gifts were good quality and I was very inpressed with the staff, given that this was the penultimate day I don't think they could have been any more enthusiastic on Day1. As well as seeing Santa there was also a show, a magician and we mustn't forget all those steam engines. Although it is not cheap I would recommend this day out to anyone, the advert that says it is for children from 1 to 101 years old is absolutely true, it is certainly value for money.

Well my grand children of 1. 3..and 7 would say so anyway. This is my second visit to this attraction and it is so popular with visitors from around the world. We went to the Santa Grotto this time. Advice. Arrive early parking is easy and organised, Toilets on carpark near bus stops with easy access for wheelchairs. eg ramps. from the moment you arrive the wonder begins. The tall firs are wrapped from top to root with lights and the entrance to the attraction has santa puppets playing a band, nice for the kids. Virtually every tree, bush from here on is covered in bright coloured Christmas lights. Male staff are dressed in Santa helper costumes and looked very smart and unlike some attractions were happy and polite to visitors, not something you get everywhere and it was pouring down. On the left as you walk to the grotto is the restaurant even this looked spectacular in it;s bright Christmas decorations. The grotto could not be mistaken brightly lit in multi coloured lights on the right. You have to pre book and pay so don't expect to just walk in off the street you won't get in. There are plenty of shops and a restaurant in side the main show room reception. Also an ice cream parlour and as you would expect a sweet shop. Arrive early then go to the grotto around an hour before your tour time. When you get in the grotto area head for the 3D situated over to the right. A nice short movie for all the family glasses supplied extra cushions to prop the children up higher. That's followed by a cleaver magic show. When your tour time is called get in the queue as quick as you can. Why? well have you ever stood in an airport queue at passport control. Yes, well you know what I'm saying. The thing is, and when you are in there you will agree, they don't let everyone in at the same time. There are plenty of animated polar bears, penguins, seals, teddy bears etc, etc, etc, A beautiful waterfall made purely from flashing lights, music and wonderment on the childrens faces. Santa. Santas house is at the end of a long queue. So when you do finally get to the door 2 nice little elves let you in. It's magical inside and apart from the elves inside, only you and your children are in ther, no body else. Then Santas big wooden door opens and the elves guide you in. The great door closes behind you and Santa welcomes the children. Sitting on Santas knee is optional. A nice digital photo is taken. Santa is nice my kids loved him, I was quite supprised as the 3 year old would normally scream her head off. At the time of booking on line you have to enter the childs name and age. (this is a good thing) As any child knows Santa knows us all so it kinda helps if he knows your childs name when they go in. our 6 year old was, as he put it, his words, ''Gob Smacked'' that Santa knew him. They all gave him their letter requests and we left. BRILLIANT !!!!. I went with my wife, her sister and 5 children. My wife and sister in law are not one's to mince their words, if they don't like something they are not shy to say so. They both said they would like to go back again without the children. But will take the children next Christmas. You can photo or video everywhere and everything but not in Santas house. I can understand this otherwise they would not be able to sell the photos. Well worth it. I took hours of video, I'm not going to put it on here as it would spoil the visit for you. £9 for Adults, £15 for children include presant. not rubbish. Book early. You want to go next Christmas? book now or you will be disapointed. For those reviewers who say it's boring, I have to say you either went somewhere else and thought you were at Thursford or you've lost your Christmas spirit.

One of my daughter used to sing in this Christmas Show so when it was my wife's 70th birthday it was the obvious place to celebrate it with my daughters and our grandchildren. The show was spectacular and the look of pleasure on my 8 year old granddaughter was amazing. The costumes were fresh, singing was in harmony and the music out of this world. The following day our three grandchildren (8,5,and 2) attended Santa's winter wonderland. How amazing this was for them? Special praise to Santa who new their names, gave us a long time with him and culminating with a present and a rather excellent photo which is likely to appear as our next year's Christmas card. Well done to all whole organise such a wonderful yearly event.

This is a good place to visit in the summer - beautifully renovated steam engines and organs and hearing the mighty Wurlitzer played wonderfully. But ....... the Christmas Spectacular is something else!!!!! The wonderful "Christmassy feeling" starts as soon as you enter the site, having parked as directed by smiling marshals - thousand upon thousands of lights in trees, animated figures and beautifully set out Christmas shops cannot fail to bring a smile to everyones face and it is not possible to be a "Bah Humbug"! Inside the main hall the decorations are even more wondrous - favourites were the polar bears atop the steam engine but everywhere you look there are lights, baubles, artificial snow, garlends etc., etc.,Then, once the show begins one is bowled over by the professionalism, the singing, dancing, the wonderful costumes and the slick way the show proceeds. Once you have been once you are hooked - it was my 2nd time, my friend's 3rd and the people sitting beside us had been "about 20 times"! Hence it is essential to get in early in the year to buy your tickets. If you are reading this wondering if you should go leave this page , go to Thursford's web site and book - now!! Just don't pinch my seat!

santa's magical journey thursford norfolk

Everything you have read about the Thursford Christmas Spectacular being magical, amazing etc is true! We went there this week. The cast are fantastic, the music sensational, the settings are magical with all the lights and even the most cynical "bah humbug" person would be bowled over. Thank you Thursford - we will be back!

I went to Thursford about 12 years ago and nearly fell asleep it was so boring. I decided to give it another go as so many people rave about it that I thought it must have improved over the years. Not so. It was just as boring. I am a regular theatre goer and this just left me cold. The seats were awful. We were so far left of the stage we had to look to the right over peoples heads. The only way I could see the middle of the stage was to lift my bottom off my seat. Seats ZF 15/16. they should not sell these seats as it impossible to see unless the cast walk right over to the left . The juggler did this for about 30 seconds but the rest of his act we did not know what he was doing. The triplets were awful luckily I only saw them for 5 seconds when I lifted myself up to see who was on stage. The Masquerade song and dance was totally boring singers dressed up in costume wafting about the stagae singing. The ballet was even worse. The Bagpipes were ear splitting . The only lively bit was when a man came and played the xylophone and jazzed it up. We missed the doves as they flew over to right and we only looked because we heard wingbeats by which time they were landing. I was beginning to think that it was only me that felt like this but one of my W.I. ladies went last week and said she would not go again as it was dated. The Winter Wonderland an attraction before the show was nice but we had to pay another £5 for that. I enjoyed seeing the steam engines. The decorations were lovely.

HELPING YOU PLAN CHRISTMAS

Santa’s Magical Journey and Thursford

One of the best things about Christmas if you have children is meeting Father Christmas.  That is until you have to queue for 2 hours with some very bored, very miserable children for a 3 minutes with Father Christmas and a very cheap toy at the end of it.  Last year, in order to avoid this and see the little darlings smiling broadly, I booked Santa’s Magical Journey at Thursford.  As I said this was to avoid the queuing as you are given a start time for your magical Journey in which you can see Father Christmas and they do control the number of people visiting.  This was worth the admission price alone but I couldn’t have imagined how wonderful the journey would be.  You are transported into a kind of Santa’s workshop at Lapland experience with elves busy making toys and polar bears, Christmas Trees and lots of lots of lights and sparkle, before you meet Father Christmas himself.  It is certainly worth the price of admission and although the children’s tickets are £15.50 each, both my children received beautiful age appropriate wooden toys.

There is also a 4d Christmas film which the children really loved.

Definitely, one the children and the older children will enjoy alike.

You wouldn’t expect to find one of Europe’s biggest and most lavish Christmas shows in a small village in North Norfolk, but the Thursford Christmas Spectacular is full of surprises. People travel from all around the country to see this show that is celebrating its 46th year in 2023.

If you are curious to see if the show lives up to the hype, I will share my thoughts in this review of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular.

About the Thursford Christmas Spectacular

The Thursford Christmas Spectacular is part of the Thursford Collection which has the world’s largest collection of steam engines, organs, wurlitzers and fairground rides. They started the Christmas show in 1977 and over the years more than 6 million visitors of all ages from around the world have seen it.

John Cushing

The show is an extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music and variety with a cast of 120 dancers, singers, musicians and speciality acts. It is hosted by the incomparable Lloyd Hollett , affectionately known as the Comedy Wordsmith, who brings his unique style of comedy to the Thursford stage for the first time.

At the Thursford Collection, you can also find Santa’s Magical Journey (a special experience where kids can meet Father Christmas ) and the Enchanted Journey of Light (includes Fantasy Land and a lantern light trail with illuminated sculptures and more). These Christmas events are not included with your Thursford Christmas Spectacular tickets.

They have a special offer (subject to availability) where you can go to The Enchanted Journey of Light (which includes Fantasyland and the Lantern Light Trail), before you see the Thursford Spectacular at a reduced rate of £10 per person.  You cannot prebook at this rate and you need to present your show ticket upon entry.

Our Experience at the Thursford Christmas Spectacular

After getting a taste of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular last year, we were genuinely looking forward to a second round. The bar had been set high, but given its impressive history, we were confident that another delightful experience awaited us.

This time we arrived early so we would have time to do more than just see the show. We had tickets for the matinee, so when we got to Thursford it was still light. Walking from the car park, we passed a striking display of the King’s Guard and Household Cavalry (little did I know it would look even better once it was dark).

We opted for a casual lunch at the Pavilion Restaurant, a cafeteria-style spot. Our selections were the pulled pork sandwich and the brie and cranberry sandwich, both served with a side of coleslaw, and they were quite tasty.

Following a delightful lunch, we made our way to the theatre, which is actually a steam museum for the rest of the year. Eager to soak in the festive ambiance, I took a moment to admire the beautiful holiday decorations that seemed to be everywhere. It’s also worthwhile to check out the the classic steam engines and the carousel on the left side of the theatre.

We wanted to ensure we had ample time to find our seats, especially since the action unfolds in the aisles. This year we had seats on the opposite side of the stage from last year and a bit further back this time, but we still had a fantastic view of all the action. I don’t believe there’s a bad seat in the house.

As the final attendees were finding their seats, a couple of bagpipes struck up some classic Christmas tunes—a clever move to capture everyone’s attention and set the festive mood. The Thursford singers, dancers, and orchestra then jumped into the act on stage, adding a contemporary twist with a medley of modern Christmas songs.

Thursford dancers doing their Irish dance

Next up, we were introduced to our host, Lloyd Hollett, tasked with filling the shoes of the fantastic Kev Orkian, who had charmed the audience in the previous years. Lloyd proved to be a witty comedian, employing a clever play on words, vocal wizardry, and impeccable comedic timing to keep the laughter rolling.

The laughter wasn’t confined to just the comedy bits. Even in the dance numbers, there were humourous details woven in—whether through amusing facial expressions or clever dance moves. The audience found themselves chuckling at times throughout the show, especially during their playful rendition of “Santa Lost His Mojo.”

Also, don’t expect the musicians to stay hidden in an orchestra pit. While they do take a seat on stage at times, here’s the twist—they showcase their talent by dancing while playing their musical instruments in certain songs. It’s a display of impressive skill and coordination.

The show featured three specialty acts as well. Sven and Jan showcased acrobatics on roller skates, Danny Butler wowed the audience with an extreme biking routine, and Strahlemann and Sohne delivered an unexpectedly funny juggling act. While each performer displayed impressive talent on their own, the combination of dynamic lighting and music that elevated these acts to another level entirely.

jugglers at Thursford Christmas Spectacular

Last year was my introduction to the mesmerising world of the Wurlitzer organ, and watching someone play this unique instrument was no less impressive the second time around. Phil Kelsall has been enchanting Thursford audiences for an astounding 42 seasons!

The show featured close-up videos of him working his magic on the Wurlitzer, and it was captivating to watch his hands and feet gracefully dance over the various keyboards and pedals. The orchestration was so masterful that it seemed like he was playing at least three different instruments simultaneously. Is there an instrument more challenging to master than this?

Thursford cast performing a medley from Mary Poppins

Act I concluded with a burst of high-energy dance, set to a medley of songs from Mary Poppins, a personal favourite film of mine. The performance, featuring chimney sweeping brushes, stayed true to the classic film, creating an atmosphere so authentic that it almost felt like Julie Andrews herself might make a surprise appearance. The infectious energy had much of the audience dancing in their seats, and enthusiastic singing along added to the joyful atmosphere.

The 25-minute interval passed quickly. The shops were open. You could also get snacks and drinks from the bars or ice cream from the ushers in the aisle.  We were treated to mince pies and mulled wine, which was delicious. Before the show started up again, they announced winners for the raffle.

Thursford dancers with flags

The show features a variety of dance styles, from Irish dancing to high kick routines and more. Regardless of the dance type, you can always count on visually appealing performances executed with both energy and precision. It’s as if these ladies have been dancing together for years.

I was particularly captivated by their routine to “Stars and Stripes Forever.” One move, where some dancers stood while others sat, left me mesmerized. I couldn’t fathom how they created such a compelling visual effect.

Thursford doves by their bird house in the theatre

In keeping with tradition, the show concluded with the entire cast gathering on stage, accompanied by the enchanting sight of doves soaring over the audience, set to a magical melody of carols.

Review of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular

It’s evident why people journey from all corners of the UK to experience the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. I found myself thoroughly captivated and, truth be told, not quite ready for the performance to end after three hours.  We’re truly fortunate to have such a special show right here in Norfolk!

cover of the program for the 2023 Thursford Christmas Spectacular

The talent, both on stage and behind the scenes, was nothing short of outstanding. The musicians and singers seamlessly transitioned into good actors and dancers, while the dancers infused the show with an incredible energy. Everyone delivered a phenomenal performance, making it nearly impossible to single out any standouts.

While I appreciated the specialty acts last year, this year’s performances elevated the excitement to a whole new level. I was on the edge of my seat, at times worried someone might get hurt, yet thankfully, everyone emerged unscathed. Other moments had me in stitches, laughing at the sheer entertainment unfolding before my eyes.

cast of thursford spectacular with the extreme biker

The costumes and set design were fun, colourful, and elaborate, and one can only imagine the tremendous effort invested in bringing it all to life. Even the orchestra members underwent costume changes, showcasing creativity and attention to detail that contributed to the magical atmosphere of the show.

The music presented an enjoyable mix of Christmas classics and popular tunes. From soulful ballads showcasing impressive vocal cords to lively tunes highlighting dynamic dance moves, the selection was well-balanced. The orchestra, far from being a mere accompaniment, was an integral part of the show. The use of different instruments, particularly the fascinating wurlitzer and the enchanting sounds of bagpipes, added unique dimensions to the musical experience.

The theatre’s design, coupled with the versatile stage, complemented the diverse acts on display. The cast utilized the space masterfully, ensuring there was always something captivating happening – whether a small group in the spotlight, the ensemble cast taking advantage of the expansive stage, or performances right in the aisles. The use of big screens for projections ensured that no one felt like they were missing a moment.

Lloyd Hollett the host of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular

Lloyd Hollett, the new host, was a delightful addition with his unique style of comedy, bringing an extra layer of enjoyment to the show. His comedic flair and engagement with the audience added a fresh and entertaining dynamic.

This year, we also had the pleasure of experiencing the Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light, which proved to be a delightful complement to the Christmas Spectacular. If you find yourself in Thursford, it’s well worth a visit. You can read our review here to learn more about it.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

People from around the world attend fairs every year in different parts of Moscow creating a festive atmosphere. The early mornings are wonderful, but the most magical moments come in the evenings when thousands of lights are lit all around and the aroma of tangerines and Christmas baking spreads everywhere. They pour out hot tea, too, to make it warm for the guests and it is fun to walk around the Christmas markets. One can go on a gastronomic journey because national dishes from different parts of the country are on display and waiting for you to try them. Besides, you can buy handicrafts and local products as New Year gifts for your family and friends.

This time around, there are 32 festival sites. The Christmas programs take place in all districts of Moscow. As many as 4,200 master classes have been prepared for guests and 19 rinks opened, while a lot more is waiting for you to explore!

If your child wants to feel warm, you can enter the bright, glowing gingerbread houses. Here, you can participate in master classes, send a letter to Santa Claus and learn to make holiday toys, or even different kinds of sweets. Parents have the opportunity to eat and drink hot tea while their kids keep busy and enjoy the warmth and comfort.

For 2023, the major theme of the festival is traveling around Russia and getting to know the holiday traditions that are typical of different regions of this multi-ethnic country. To get a taste of what holidays look like in every region of Russia, many holiday markets scattered around the city welcome visitors to taste the national dishes and warm drinks and buy local products and handicrafts from all across the country. Don’t forget to charge your phone to the fullest and free up its space — you’re probably going to take a lot of pictures!

With the country opening up to travel, this holiday season is set to be extra-special and extra-busy. The UN has named Moscow the best city in the world for its quality of life in its global cities ranking for 2022.

Its beauty is undeniable, but, in winter, the city looks even more awesome and Moscow is happy to invite everyone to share the festive joy.
