Frequently Asked Questions About Sweden Schengen Visas

sweden visa for uk travel document

The Nordic country of Sweden is a rich cultural destination with breathtaking scenery. Progressive and peaceful, Sweden’s long history provides plenty of incredible landmarks, architecture, and museums to choose from.

Sweden conjures images of flat pack furniture from IKEA or modern casual styles at H&M. Maybe you think Swedish meatballs or Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring a masterful goal. In truth, Sweden is all this and much more.

The capital Stockholm is known as the “Venice of Scandinavia,” and is where you can visit the majestic Stockholm Royal Palace, tour the historic Vasa Museum , or learn about the history of the Nobel Prize at the Nobel Museum . During the summer, long hours of daylight make this a fantastic place for venturing outdoors. Sweden is truly a wondrous destination that attracts tourists from all corners of the world.

In early 2020,  Sweden joined its Schengen country neighbours in closing its borders  in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has not yet opened for non-essential travel or to travellers who do not meet their certain exemptions. You can read more about these exemptions on the Swedish emergency information website . Travellers who can present a UK vaccine certificate are exempt from the ban on entry to Sweden and the COVID-19 test requirement.

Only travellers covered by at least one of the exemptions can travel to Sweden from outside the EU/ EEA, and must also present a negative COVID-19 test not more than 48 hours old.

Fully vaccinated UK citizens can enter Sweden without the need to test or self-isolate if you received your second vaccine dose more than 2 weeks before you arrive in Sweden and your vaccine is approved by the European Medicines Agency .

You must provide proof that you have been fully vaccinated. Children under 18 years accompanying fully vaccinated adults are exempted from all travel restrictions, including testing.

If you are not fully vaccinated , you will need to provide proof you are exempt from the current travel ban under another exemption and you must present a valid test not more than 48 hours (or proof that you are exempt from the testing requirements). You can find this information on the Swedish Police website .

Sweden, like other Schengen countries, updates its restrictions regularly depending on the current situation so it’s best to check with the restrictions close to your travel date to know the updated measures and requirements before you travel. You should check on the latest news regarding restrictions, quarantine or whether a test will be required either from  reliable news sources , the  Swedish emergency information website , or the  UK government website  one to two weeks before your trip.

Who needs a visa to travel to Sweden from the UK?

Sweden is a Schengen country , which allows for free movement between 26 EU and EFTA states (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland). A uniform Schengen visa issued by one of the Schengen states is valid for travel within the whole Schengen area.

The rules for travelling or working in European countries changed on 1 January 2021:

  • you can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to  90 days in any 180-day period  without a visa as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training
  • if you are travelling to Sweden and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days
  • for long-stay visits, to work or study, for business or for other reasons, you will need to meet the Swedish government’s entry requirements.
  • if you stay in Sweden with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit

At Swedish border control, you may need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing. Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit. You may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show you have enough money for your stay

There are separate requirements for those who are residents of Sweden. If you are resident in Sweden, you should carry proof of residence as well as your valid passport when you travel. You should also check your passport’s validity when you travel and renew it if you don’t have enough time on it. Your passport must be:

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Sweden or any other Schengen country
  • less than 10 years old

Many non-EU nationals who reside in the UK are still required to get a Schengen visa to travel to Sweden.

Citizens of the following countries residing in the UK and planning to visit Sweden are required to get a Swedish visa in order to be able to enter Sweden.

The main requirement if you plan to apply for your visa from the UK is that you must have a UK residence permit valid for at least another 3 more months beyond the date you plan to leave Sweden or the Schengen Area.

Before starting a visa application, or getting a flight to Sweden, make sure to check whether you need a visa to Sweden or not.

If you have a 3-month UK visa you can extend it for 3 more months in order to be eligible to apply for a Sweden Schengen visa from within the UK. You must apply for an extension before your visa expires and while you’re still in the UK.

What are the requirements for extension of a UK Leave to Remain?

When you decide to apply for an extension you must make sure you comply with several situations:

  • You must require an extension of the same visa type you currently have
  • You should apply for an extension at least 8 weeks before the existing visa period expires
  • You must have not been part of any criminal activity or you must have not broken any UK law or immigration law during the entire period of stay in the UK
  • You have to provide the biometric information, such as the fingerprints and recent photographs for yourself and any dependents when applying for the extension
  • You must have not been in breach of immigration laws while having a valid UK visa

Note: You can stay in the UK until the decision about the extension is taken, but only if you have applied within the visa period.

Steps to Applying for a Swedish Schengen Visa from the UK

step 1: know your visa type and validity.

To apply for a Schengen visa to Sweden in the UK, you first need to know the  type of visa  you require and how long the visa will be valid. There are two types of visa that you can apply for, which one you need will depend on the duration of your trip and your reason for travelling to Sweden:

  • Short-stay (Schengen) Visa – valid for up to 90 days (in a 180-day period) for the purposes of tourism, business, visiting family/friends, conference, EEA/EU national family member
  • Residence and work permits (Long stays) – you should apply for this kind of visa if you want to live in Sweden for more than 90 days for employment, family reunification, study, research etc.

You will then behttps://immigrationandmigration.com/90-180-day-rule-schengen-calculator-free-schengen-zone-stay-calculator/ issued either a  single entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visa  for up to  5 years  based on the information you provide in your visa application.

It is important to choose the correct Schengen visa type to apply for depending on your trip so that you have the best chance of having your application approved. Find out more about the different types of Schengen visas in our blog post: Schengen Visa Types – All You Should Know When Applying for a Schengen Visa .

On the visa application form, you will be prompted to indicate the purpose of your travel to the Schengen territory. Here are some purposes to help you apply for the correct visa:

  • Tourism   – This is the most popular purpose of travel to Schengen Countries. Applicants, who intend to travel purely for tourist purposes, i.e. sightseeing, leisure, and experiencing their culture, architecture, foods, and much more, need to indicate this on the application form.
  • Business   – If you intend to travel for business purposes, i.e. visiting a business/company for meetings, recruitments, training, or any other work-related activities, then you need to indicate Business the purpose of your travels. Every Business visa application has to be confirmed by an invitation letter from a business/company based in Sweden, if not, you will be required to apply as a Tourist.
  • Airport Transit   – Certain nationalities have to apply for an airport transit visa in order to be allowed to make a stopover at an airport in a Schengen Area, without entering the Schengen Country. You need to indicate airport transit as the purpose of travel on your application form.
  • Transit   – This is similar to the above-mentioned purpose of travel, popular among sea travellers that need to stop over at the seaport of one of the member states.
  • Visiting Family or Friends   – If you need to visit and stay with your family or friends that legally reside in the Schengen Area, you can then indicate this as your purpose of travel. You’ll, however, be required to provide a letter of invitation among other documents.
  • Study  – Students wishing to attend any type of educational institution in the Schengen area need to indicate this on their application. They can either choose to apply for a  short term 3-month Schengen study visa  or National Visa (category “D”) if they plan on being in the country longer.
  • Medical   – Indicate this as your purpose of travel if you are travelling to any of the member states of the Schengen territory to seek medical treatment. This visa will allow you to get the medical care you need at any medical institution for a period of 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • Official Visit  – Tick this as your purpose of travel if you are travelling to the Schengen region in an official capacity.
  • Cultural, Sports, and Film Crews   – this visa is for people wishing to travel to a Schengen member country for the purpose of attending a cultural, sports, or religious event or they are part of a film crew. The applicant should be part of the event, i.e. a performer at a concert, or a writer presenting their book at a book event, or an athlete participating in a sports event and not only as a mere audience.
  • Other  – If the purpose of your travel does not fall under any of the mentioned categories, you’ll have to choose the “other” option on the application form. You will, however, be required to specify the purpose of your visit in a few words.

To apply for a Sweden visa, you must book an appointment with the Swedish Embassy in London at either the Swedish Embassy of London or the VFS Centre.

Book your Swedish visa appointment by sending a letter along with the following documents:

  • Passport copy
  • UK residency permit
  • Stamped Addressed Envelope (SAE)

You should apply for a Swedish visa at the appropriate Swedish Embassy/Consulate or Swedish visa application centre in the UK if:

  • Sweden is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting
  • Sweden is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in)
  • Sweden is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in Sweden and another Schengen country)

In case you plan on staying in Sweden for more than 90 days you must apply for a residency permit, not a Swedish Schengen visa.

If you are not a resident in the United Kingdom you should apply at the Swedish Embassy/Consulate/VAC in your home country of residence.

Sweden Schengen Visa Application Decision

If your application for a Sweden Schengen visa is approved, it will be stamped on your passport and you can visit Sweden and any country in the Schengen area for the duration of your visa. Find out how to read your Schengen visa sticker in our blog post: How to Read Your Schengen Visa Sticker .

If your application is rejected, it would have been for a specific reason.

There are several reasons why your Sweden Schengen visa application could be rejected. Some common Schengen visa rejection reasons include:

  • Marriage certificate missing  – if you are applying for a visa for family reasons, you may have to prove family ties. This is why you must provide a marriage certificate
  • You applied for the wrong visa  – it is your responsibility to apply for the correct visa depending on how long you are going to Sweden for and your reason for travelling there
  • It is not clear that you plan to return to the UK  – it must be clear that you intend to return to the UK before the visa expires. If the visa staff have doubts about this, your visa will be rejected
  • The purpose of your trip cannot be established  – the reason why you are planning to go to Sweden must be made clear. You can do this by providing specific documents like a full itinerary, work contract or invitation letter, etc.

You need to make sure that you submit the required documents and answer your visa interview well in order to get the best chance of having your visa application approved.

Read more on how to avoid visa rejections here:  Visa refused: 9 Common Reasons Why Visas Get Rejected .

If you receive a negative answer in your Sweden Schengen visa application, this does not mean you cannot ever travel to Sweden. You have two options:

  • File an appeal  for a Sweden Schengen visa rejection if you believe that the decision to deny you a visa is unjust. You should have a strong basis for your complaint. You can appeal this decision by writing an appeal letter for a Sweden Schengen visa rejection.
  • Reapply  by correcting the mistakes you did in your previous application. Or improve your situation in order to comply with the eligibility criteria for a Sweden Schengen visa.

Sweden Schengen Visa Extension

A person visiting Sweden on a Schengen Visa can extend their visa if they have legitimate reasons. This could be for either of the following reasons:

  • Humanitarian reasons
  • Force majeure, and
  • Important personal reasons

The decisions to approve a Schengen visa extension request are handled case by case.

The overall process of extending your Swedish Schengen visa will involve:

  • Determining whether you have a justified reason to request an extension
  • Submitting all the necessary documents. These include a valid passport that has the Schengen Visa used to get in the Schengen area stamped in it, one passport-sized photo, proof of financial subsistence, Schengen Visa Insurance that covers the extension duration, and all the documents that justify your reason for an extension
  • Paying visa fees where applicable
  • Attending a visa interview if necessary
  • Waiting for the approval

You need to make sure to read your Schengen visa sticker carefully so that you do not overstay your visa and avoid the penalties that come with doing so, which can include anything from a fine, deportation from the Schengen zone, and even being outright banned from the area.

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

Sweden Visa for UK Travel Document

In recent years, Sweden has become one of the most popular travel destinations for UK citizens. With its stunning natural landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich cultural heritage, it is no wonder that many people are choosing to visit this Scandinavian country. However, before you pack your bags and book your flight, it is important to understand the visa requirements for UK travel document holders.

As a member of the European Union, Sweden operates under the Schengen Agreement, which allows for free movement between member countries. This means that UK citizens do not need a visa to enter Sweden for short stays of up to 90 days as long as they hold a valid UK travel document.

However, it is important to note that the rules will change for UK citizens after the Brexit transition period ends on December 31, 2020. From January 1, 2021, UK citizens will be subject to the same visa requirements as other non-EU nationals. This means that if you are planning to visit Sweden after this date, you should check the specific visa requirements for UK travel document holders.

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

To apply for a Sweden visa, UK travel document holders will need to submit the following documents:

  • Completed visa application form
  • Valid UK travel document
  • Proof of travel insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Sweden
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in Sweden
  • Flight itinerary
  • Passport-sized photographs

Once you have gathered all the necessary documents, you can submit your visa application at the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate. It is important to apply well in advance of your planned trip, as the processing time for visa applications can vary.

It is worth mentioning that the visa application process for UK travel document holders may be different from that of UK passport holders. Therefore, it is recommended to contact the Swedish embassy or consulate in your country for specific instructions and guidance.

As for the perspective of experts, many travel experts recommend obtaining the necessary visas and documents well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications or delays. They also advise UK citizens to stay updated with any changes in visa regulations, especially after the Brexit transition period ends.

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

In conclusion, while UK citizens currently do not require a visa to visit Sweden for short stays, it is important to be aware of the potential changes in visa requirements after the Brexit transition period. To ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip, UK travel document holders should carefully follow the visa application process and stay informed about any updates or changes in the regulations.

Visa Requirements for UK Travel Document Holders in Other European Countries

Each European country may have different visa requirements for UK travel document holders. Here are the visa requirements for UK travel document holders in some popular European destinations:

UK travel document holders can currently enter France for short stays without a visa. However, after the Brexit transition period ends, UK citizens may need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter France.

Similar to France, UK travel document holders can currently visit Spain without a visa. However, after the Brexit transition period ends, UK citizens may need to obtain a Schengen visa before traveling to Spain.

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

Italy currently allows UK travel document holders to enter the country for short stays without a visa. However, after the Brexit transition period ends, UK citizens may need to apply for a Schengen visa to visit Italy.

UK travel document holders can currently visit Germany without a visa for short stays. However, after the Brexit transition period, UK citizens may be required to obtain a Schengen visa to enter Germany.

The Impact of Brexit on Travel Document Holders

The UK’s departure from the European Union, commonly known as Brexit, will have an impact on the travel requirements for UK travel document holders. After the Brexit transition period ends, UK citizens will be treated as third-country nationals and may be subject to visa requirements when traveling to EU member states.

This means that UK travel document holders may need to apply for a visa before visiting European countries, including Sweden. The specific visa requirements may vary depending on the country, and it is important for UK citizens to stay updated with any changes in regulations.

Sweden Visa For Uk Travel Document

Additionally, Brexit may also lead to changes in passport validity requirements. UK citizens traveling to the EU may need to ensure that their passports have at least six months of validity remaining beyond their planned date of departure. It is therefore crucial to check passport validity requirements before traveling.

Important Tips for UK Travel Document Holders

Here are some important tips for UK travel document holders when planning their trips:

  • Check visa requirements well in advance of your trip.
  • Apply for visas and gather necessary documents early to avoid delays.
  • Stay updated with any changes in visa regulations, particularly after Brexit.
  • Ensure your passport has sufficient validity remaining beyond your planned date of departure.
  • Consider travel insurance to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances.
  • Research local customs and familiarize yourself with the local laws of your destination.
  • Make copies of important documents such as passports, visas, and travel insurance.
  • Register with your embassy or consulate in case of emergencies.
  • Travel with an open mind and embrace the cultural experiences of your chosen destination.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Sweden is a party to the Schengen Agreement. Visit the  Embassy of Sweden  website for the most current visa information.

Traveling Through Europe: If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for  at least three months beyond the period of stay. If you plan on transiting a Schengen country, review our  U.S. Travelers in Europe page.
  • You will need  sufficient proof of funds  and  a return plane ticket .
  • For additional information about visas for the Schengen area, see the  Schengen Visa page.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:   The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Sweden.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism : Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Sweden has been subject to terrorist incidents in the past and the potential for a future terrorist incident remains.  As in other countries in the Schengen area, Sweden’s open borders with its European neighbors could permit terrorist groups to enter and exit the country with anonymity. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks, but all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.

For more information, see our Terrorism page .

Crime:  Sweden has a low crime rate, and most crimes involve the theft of personal property from vehicles, residences, and public areas. While armed violence against the public continues to be a rare occurrence, violent crimes, such as homicides and sexual assaults, can occur. The majority of violent crimes occur in Sweden’s larger cities, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. Organized crime groups have also committed armed acts against each other.

Pickpocketing and petty theft are common in and around major tourist attractions, especially Stockholm’s Old Town (“Gamla Stan”) as well as at restaurants, coffee shops, amusement parks, museums, bars, airports, and on public transportation.

Hotel breakfast rooms and lobbies attract well-dressed, professional thieves who blend in with guests and target purses and briefcases left unguarded by tourists and business travelers.

Do not buy counterfeit or pirated goods, even if they are widely available. Not only are counterfeit goods illegal to bring back into the United States, but if you purchase them, you may also be breaking local law.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams : See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Sweden. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • romance/online dating
  • money transfers
  • bank overpayments
  • online relationships that evolve into requests for emergency financial assistance

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of crime, including sexual assault, should first contact local police authorities by dialing 112. Crime victims may contact the U.S. Embassy at +46 (8) 785-5300 after they have contacted local authorities.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting all crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide information on  Sweden’s Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism : The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

There is no provision for bail in Sweden. U.S. citizens who are arrested may be held in custody until an investigation or trial is concluded, either of which can range in duration from a few days to a year or more.

Drug and Alcohol Enforcement: Swedish law enforcement authorities have no tolerance for illegal drugs, including marijuana. Marijuana of all forms, including CBD products, are illegal to bring into or possess in Sweden. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in Sweden are strict, and convicted offenders can face imprisonment, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering Sweden.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs, is considered a very serious offense. The maximum legal blood-alcohol level is .02% - much lower than in the United States. Swedish police often conduct alcohol tests on roads and highways. Drunk driving rules are strictly enforced and fines can be severe, including possible jail sentences.

Child Protection Laws: The treatment of children is taken very seriously in Sweden. All forms of corporal punishment of children are against the law, and any form of violence, humiliating treatment, or neglect may result in the child being taken away from parents by the Swedish authorities and placed into long-term care by Sweden’s social services and/or criminal charges being brought against the offending parent. Homeschooling is not allowed in Sweden, except under extraordinary circumstances.

Compulsory Military Service: In March 2017, Sweden reintroduced military conscription for men and women. Dual U.S.-Swedish citizens are also subject to conscription, although persons who have previously done military service may be excluded from the requirement and should contact the Swedish Ministry of Defense for more information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Sweden.

See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Sweden prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. Accessibility to public facilities and transportation in Sweden is extensive. The Swedish Government actively funds programs promoting disability access to streets, public buildings, stores, restaurants, and public transportation. For more information on accessibility in Sweden, visit the  Tourist Bureau ’s website.

Students: See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Medical care in Sweden is comparable to that found in the United States. Non-residents are expected to pay their own medical costs in full.

For emergency services in Sweden, dial 112. Assistance in English is available.

Ambulance services are widely available.

For non-emergencies, you can visit a local medical center or clinic, called an “Akutmottagning” or “Vardcentral.” Be prepared to present your passport.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept credit card payments. See our  webpage  for more information on insurance overseas. Visit  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with Sweden’s  Medical Products Agency  to ensure the medication is legal in Sweden. Please note that local physicians may not prescribe the quantities or dosages of medication that a U.S. doctor would. Stringent Swedish customs regulations prohibit the shipment of drugs to Sweden. Most pharmacies (“Apotek”) are open during normal shopping hours, but major cities will have a 24-hour pharmacy.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended for international travel by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of local hospitals and health facilities here .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Swedish roads are comparable to those in the United States, though secondary roads may be less heavily traveled. Road signs use standard international symbols and Swedish text. Many urban streets have traffic lanes reserved for public transportation only.

All vehicles on the road must have their headlights turned on, no matter the time of day. You must use snow tires between December 1 and March 31, and you should be experienced driving on ice and snow if you are going to drive in the winter.

You must use seat belts, and children under 135cm (4ft 5 inches) in height must be seated in approved child or booster seats.

Gas stations in rural areas can be far apart. Some stations are unattended and require a credit card with a chip to purchase fuel.

Slower vehicles should move onto the shoulder to allow faster moving vehicles to pass.

Traffic Laws: You can use a valid U.S. driver’s license while visiting Sweden, or as a resident in Sweden registered for less than one year, but you must be at least 18 years old to drive.

The maximum speed limit is 120 kilometers per hour (approximately 75 miles per hour).

Public Transportation: Public transportation in Sweden is the recommended way to travel within larger cities. Taxis are more expensive than in major U.S. cities. Most local residents use public transport in Stockholm, as parking can be expensive. The bus, train, and subway systems are considered safe. Cyclists are common on many roads, especially in urban areas.

See our  Road Safety page  or Driving in Sweden website for more information. Visit the website of Sweden’s  national tourist office  and  national transport administration  responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Sweden’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Sweden’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Sweden should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and the  NGA maritime safety information website .

Keep in mind that it may take longer for you to receive your decision if you do not submit the documents we need with your application.

Book an appointment in the e-service

Before submitting your application via the e-service, book an appointment to provide fingerprints and take photographs. The appointment is included as part of the e-service.

You will receive information on how to cancel or change the time you have booked in the e-service in your confirmation email.

Children under 18 years

Children under the age of 18 years cannot apply for a travel document themselves. It is the child's parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for a travel document for the child.

If your child has two parents/legal guardians and you apply through the e-service, you must complete and attach the form Consent that the Swedish Migration Agency issues a passport (alien’s passport or travel document) for a child under 18 years, form 247011. Both parents/legal guardians must give their consent and their signatures must be witnessed.

If you are applying as a guardian, you must attach proof of your appointment and a copy of your ID card.

If the child does not have any parent in Sweden, the guardian must go with the child when the child has his/her photograph and fingerprints taken.

Applying for a travel document does not cost anything but you must pay a fee when you collect the travel document. You can pay the fee by card when you come to the Swedish Migration Agency to collect your travel document.

If you cannot pay by card, you can pay the fee by bank giro or ask for a payment slip when you have your photograph and fingerprints taken. Pay the fee after you receive the decision that you have been granted a travel document.

The Swedish Migration Agency does not accept cash and cannot give you your travel document until the fee has been paid.

If you cannot apply for a travel document online

If you cannot apply for a travel document online, you must apply by filling in the form Application for a travel document and handing it in when you go in person to visit one of the Swedish Migration Agency's Service Centres. Fill out the form before your visit.

Children under the age of 18 years cannot apply for a travel document themselves. It is the child's legal guardian or guardian who must make the application for a travel document for the child.

If there are two legal guardians, both must approve the application by signing the child's application form. If only one of the legal guardians goes with the child to the Swedish Migration Agency to hand in the application, the other one must sign the application form in advance. The signature must be witnessed by a third person.

If the child does not have any parent in Sweden, the guardian must go with the child when the child has his/her photograph and fingerprints taken. The child's guardian must take his/her ID card and proof of appointment with him/her.

Book an appointment

Before you go to the Swedish Migration Agency to hand in your application, you must book an appointment. Keep in mind that all the people applying for a travel document, including any children, must go to the Swedish Migration Agency in person. Each person who is making an application will be given their own appointment. You can book several appointments one after the other.

Handing in your application

When you hand in your application, you must have the following with you:

  • your Swedish ID card
  • the application form, completed and signed (one form per person). Remember that both legal guardians must sign the form if you are applying for a travel document for a child.
  • any previously issued travel document or copy of a police report stating that you have lost your travel document.

If you have a national passport or an older travel document, you must hand them in to the Swedish Migration Agency. Sometimes the case officer may accept that you hand in copies of your passport along with your application, but then you will be asked to hand in the actual passport when it is time to process your application or when you go to collect your new passport.

The Swedish Migration Agency will take your photograph and fingerprints when you hand in your application. Your photograph, fingerprints and personal data are stored in a computer chip in the travel document. These data are not stored at the Swedish Migration Agency; they are only stored in the card's chip. Children under the age of six years do not have to provide fingerprints.

You may need to answer questions about your chances of getting a national passport or other document that functions like a passport. In that case, you will be given a questionnaire to fill in when you visit the Swedish Migration Agency to hand in your application.

After the application has been made

You will find up-to-date information about processing times on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website. The decision may take longer if the case officer has to ask you for more information.

Once the Swedish Migration Agency has processed your application, the decision will be sent to your home address by post.

Current processing times

After the decision

The decision will be sent to your home address by post. If the Swedish Migration Agency has decided that you are entitled to a travel document, you will be notified when your travel document is ready to be collected. It may take up to 14 days from the date you receive the decision until you can collect your travel document from Service Centre where you made your application.

If your application for a travel document was refused, you can appeal against the Swedish Migration Agency’s decision.

If your application has been refused

If the Swedish Migration Agency has refused your application for a travel document, you can appeal against the decision.

If you want to appeal, you must write a letter in which you state what decision you want the Swedish Migration Agency to change and why you think the decision is wrong. In the letter, you must provide your personal data and your case number and you must sign the letter yourself.

Make sure that the Swedish Migration Agency receives your appeal no later than three weeks after the day you received the decision.

If you want someone else to appeal on your behalf, you must give that person a written power of attorney.

Collect your travel document

You must collect your travel document at the same Service Centre where you handed in your application (unless you have been told to collect the travel document in another town).

If you want to collect your travel document in another town, you must inform the staff about that when you have your photograph and fingerprints taken.

If you have been granted a travel document, you must book an appointment before visiting the Swedish Migration Agency. Be sure to book an appointment for each person who is collecting their travel document. If you are going to collect passports for your children, you must book an appointment for each travel document you are collecting.

You must collect your passport in person. For children under 18 years, the legal guardian or guardian can collect the travel document without the child being present.

Children over 15 years can collect their travel document themselves if the Swedish Migration Agency has noted that the legal guardian informed them about that at the time of application.

You must have a valid form of ID with you when you collect your travel document. If you have a previously issued travel document that you have not already handed in, you must return it when you collect your new one.

You must pay a fee to collect your travel document. You pay the fee by card at the Service Centre when you visit the Swedish Migration Agency.

If you are unable to pay by card, ask for a payment slip and pay the fee before collecting your travel document. The Swedish Migration Agency does not accept cash and cannot give you your travel document until the fee has been paid.

If you have paid in advance, you must present a receipt showing that you have paid when you collect your travel document.

About the travel document

Travelling with a travel document.

A travel document meets the EU's passport requirements and can be used for travel to all countries. However, if you are a refugee under the 1951 Geneva Convention, it will be stated in your passport that you cannot travel to your country of origin or the country from which you have fled.

If you have not been able to prove your identity, your travel document will state that your identity has not been proven which may make it more difficult for you to travel to certain countries.

Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Please contact the embassy of the country in question for more information before you travel.

How long a travel document is valid for

A travel document is valid for a maximum of two years and cannot be extended. If you need a travel document after it has expired, you can apply for a new one.

When you want to apply for a new travel document, you must have your photograph and fingerprints taken again, since your photograph and fingerprints are not stored at the Swedish Migration Agency, only in a computer chip in the travel document.

If you lose your travel document

If you lose your travel document or if it is stolen, you must first of all report it to the police. If you need a new travel document, you must hand in a new application. When you apply for a new travel document, take with you a copy of the police report that you received by post or at the police station.
