We've offered variations on this itinerary over the years and usually for only special one-off departures, so we're very excited to add Uruguay and Paraguay to our permanent roster of regularly-scheduled trips.

Our Paraguay, Northwest Argentina & Uruguay Tour itinerary is an amalgam of three very different, up-and-coming destinations - Uruguay is enjoying recognition as one of the best-governed, safest and most stable liberal democracies on the continent, with a friendly laid-back vibe and a vibrant emerging arts and culinary scene.

Paraguay is what parts of Argentina were like 30 years ago, with an un-touristed and authentic colonial charm.

Northwest Argentina, with its isolated and distinct Andean culture, is one of the most "indigenous" regions in the southern Andes.

The lifestyle here is laid-back and ruggedly elegant, with soaring peaks, plunging gorges, endless salt flats set as dramatic backdrops to leafy colonial plazas, chic galleries, trendy restaurants, and unfailingly friendly local smiles.

Prices below are per person , twin-sharing costs in Canadian Dollars (CAD) . Pricing does not include airfare to/from the tour and any applicable taxes. Day 1 Arrival in Asuncion Arrive in Asuncion; welcome to Paraguay! Asuncion was founded on August 15, 1537 -- the Feast of the Assumption, or Asuncion in Spanish. Take a step back and you'll see traces of the city that was once the colonial capital of southern South America. Asuncion is one of the oldest cities in South America and the longest continually inhabited area in the Rio de la Plata Basin; for this reason that it is known as "Mother of Cities." It was from here that the colonial expeditions departed to found other cities, including the second foundation of Buenos Aires and of other important cities. Overnight in Asuncion. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Asuncion: City Tour Today we explore one of South America's oldest capitals. The city still displays a definite colonial aspect with colourful patios and red tiled roofs. From the river's east bank, the city spans out into gentle hills that look like large rectangular blocks overlooking the bay; beautiful flowering trees, native fauna, and lush gardens are spread throughout the city. We start with a look inside the Casa de Independencia. Built in 1772, the building housed the secret meetings that led to the 1811 declaration of independence from Spain. Our tour will take in the Barro Museum; this creative oasis houses a world class collection of indigenous folk art. We stop at the Government Palace before visiting the Pantheon of National Heroes, pausing to reflect on the extremely turbulent history of this country. We will also stop at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Asuncion and the Teatro Municipal. Overnight in Asuncion. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Asuncion - Ruta Jesuita - Encarnacion Today we'll head southeast to discover the marvellous ruins of the Jesuit Reductions, Christian settlements established to convert, teach, and protect the native Guarani communities. These intricate and still impressive buildings are little visited but evocative of the extraordinary era in Spanish colonial times when the Guarani were taught architecture, music, and craftwork. They are usually visited by following the newly devised “Ruta Jesuita”. Ruins of Jesuit missions are today spread out across Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. The Spanish and Portuguese empires adopted a strategy of gathering native populations into communities called "Indian Reductions". The objectives of the reductions (missions) were to organize and exploit the labour of the native indigenous inhabitants while also imparting Christianity and European culture. The Jesuits attempted to create a theocratic "state within a state" in which the native peoples in the reductions, guided by the Jesuits, would remain autonomous and isolated from Spanish colonists and Spanish rule. A major factor attracting the natives to the reductions was the protection they afforded from enslavement and the forced labor of encomiendas. En route we'll pass through San Cosme and San Damian, where we will visit the Jesuit ruins and see the church and school that are still in use. Overnight in Encarnacion. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Jesuit Missions, Paraguay - Posadas, Argentina When the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish realm in 1767, the reductions slowly died out, becoming victims of slave raids or being absorbed into European society. Some of the reductions have continued to be inhabited as towns while most have been abandoned and remain only as ruins. At the height of the reductions in the 18th century were around 40 different communities that were home to more than 150,000 Indians, most of whom were Guaraní, Tupi, Chiquitos, and members of diverse ethnic groups in the Llanos de Moxos. Today we explore several of the Jesuit Missions in the Paraná and Itapúa areas of Paraguay, including the ruins of La Santísima Trinidad. Rarely does one find a UNESCO World Heritage Site with so few visitors, but that's only part of the attraction. A walk around the atmospheric red-brick hilltop ruins allows you to absorb a sense of what once made these 17th and 18th century colonies so powerful that the Spanish crown had them abolished. The Jesuit ruins of Trinidad, the best-preserved in the country, are testament to an earlier age when the Jesuits commanded considerable power in these parts. We also visit the Mission of Jesús de Tavarangue, built in 1609 and part of the Jesuit and Guarani communities for 150 years. The ruins feature impressive brickwork, baroque details, and extensive proportions that hint at the former architectural glory of these missions. Later today we cross into Argentina for our overnight in Posadas. Overnight in Posadas. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Posadas - Apostoles & Santa Maria La Mayor - L.N. Alem Today we continue Apostoles -- also known as the City of Flowers -- located on a plateau scored by innumerable streams that then form the characteristic falls of the Misiones region. Apostoles is the home of the Juan Szychowski Yerba Mate History Museum, and one of the largest yerba factory farms in the province, "La Cachuera", which makes the brand Yerba Amanda. We visit the museum before continuing to the Jesuit ruins of Santa Maria La Mayor, founded in 1626. By 1744 it held a population of 993; it was abandoned after the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies in 1767. The ruins have been grown over by vegetation; not as well-preserved as others on our program, but charming and picturesque in their advanced state of ruin. We end our day back in Leandro N. Alem, named after an Argentine politician, a founder and leader of the Radical Civic Union. Overnight in Leandro N. Alem. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Alem - San Ignacio - Wanda - Puerto Iguazu This (likely early) morning we depart by road for Iguazu Falls. As we prepare to leave the Misiones behind, one can reflect on their impact and the ideals they represented. Indeed Pope Francis, in 2015, praised the Jesuit reductions as an almost utopian social and economic experiment, saying that they were "one of the most important experiences of evangelization and social organization in history. There the Gospel was the soul and the life of communities which did not know hunger, unemployment, illiteracy or oppression. This historical experience shows us that, today too, a more humane society is possible." And since it's one the way, we'll include our last ruined mission! The San Ignacio Mini Mission, located in the San Ignacio Valley, is one of the best-preserved. The mission was founded in 1632, and features brilliant baroque architectural details. These ruins, like many of the others, were virtually forgotten and abandoned for many decades, lost in the dense vegetation, until uncovered in 1897. It wasn't until an expedition in 1903, restoration projects in the 1940s, the Robert Deniro movie 'The Mission,' and the inclusion of the missions on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in the 1980s, did the missions gain world recognition. We can also stop at Wanda, famous for its mines of semi-precious stones such as agate, amethyst, topaz, jasper and different types of quartz. There are several mining companies that remove the stones and also cut, polish and produce different types of products, from ornaments to jewelry. Mining companies have guided tours in which tourists can appreciate the different sectors of the mines, workshops and showrooms (hopefully we'll be able to experience this). The town of Wanda was founded mostly by Polish settlers; indeed it was named after a Polish princess. We finish our day in the vicinity of Iguazu Falls, located at the confluence of the River Iguazu and the deep flowing Parana. This place is known as the "Hito de las Tres Fronteras" because at this point Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay converge. Overnight in Iguazu. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Iguazu Falls Area This morning we have a guided tour of the falls on the Argentine side. Here we are at the confluence of the River Iguazu and the deep flowing Parana. This place is known as the "Hito de las Tres Fronteras" because at this point Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay converge. The national park here is home to more than 21,000 plant species and 400 bird species. The waterfalls disgorge 1700 cubic m (1,853 cubic yards) of water per second from a height of 70m (230 feet) in 275 different falls, most of which are in Argentina. On the frontier with Brazil there is a gully -- La Garganta del Diablo (The Devil's Throat), which is 150m (490 feet) wide and 700m (2,290 feet) long. The afternoon is yours to revisit the paths along the upper and lower parts of the falls and the path that goes along the river from the observation point of the Bosetti Falls to the quay. The plunging falls throw a fine drizzle up to 30m (98 feet) into the air, weaving countless rainbows in the sun. Be sure to take rain-proof clothing. The United Nations has declared Iguazu Falls a protected area of worldwide importance. You can also take an optional boat ride to the base of the falls (extra cost), or the local bus to Iguazu Town where you can explore and observe where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay come together. Your Tour Leader can help you plan your afternoon. Overnight at Iguazu Falls. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Iguazu - Fly to Salta This morning we connect with our flight to to Salta (1100 m/3,300 feet) in the northwest corner of the country. The city of Salta, capital of Salta Province, was founded on April 16th, 1582. Known as "Salta la linda" (Salta the Beautiful), it is one of the Argentine cities that has valued and preserved its colonial architectural heritage. In its building aspect you can appreciate a mixture of colonial buildings with white walls, red tiled roofs, also with modern constructions within an urban scheme that includes several green spaces. The variety and beauty of its landscapes is spectacular: the magnificence of its mountains, its valleys, its gorges, and the subtropical flora and fauna preserved in the national parks, are just some of its immediate attractions. Depending on timing, we may begin our Salta sightseeing today upon arrival. Overnight in Salta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Salta: City Tour Argentina’s northwestern Salta Province has long been famous for its spectacular scenery of Andean peaks, red- rock valleys and vineyards, but its central metropolis, the city of Salta, has emerged only in the last few years as a bright spot on the tourist map. A concerted effort to encourage new hotels, restaurants, and shops is now paying off in a stream of visitors attracted to Salta’s updated colonial charm. Today, the old city center is recognized as a jewel- box-size getaway, perfect for exploring on foot and finally appreciated for its rich cultural offerings, grand neo- Classical buildings and thriving night life. This morning we'll have a guided walking tour of the highlights of Salta, most of which are grouped around the central square: the Cathedral, the Cabildo or Town Council, which houses the Museo Historico del Norte; the Museo Colonial, and the Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts). The church of San Francisco has one of the tallest church towers in the Americas (53 m/175 feet), and the Convento de San Bernardo now belongs to the Carmelite Order. Balance of the day at leisure (given our free afternoon and early start tomorrow, dinner will be on your own this evening). Overnight in Salta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 10 Safari to the Clouds - Purmamarca Today (early start!) we embark upon a "Safari to the Clouds," which offers a unique opportunity to combine three Northwestern Argentinean Routes in two unforgettable days.* Travelling by sturdy 4x4 vehicle (the roads can be quite bad), we follow the railway tracks belonging to the famous Train to Clouds, admiring this magnificent engineering work started in the 20s by the Quebrada del Toro, up to San Antonio de los Cobres. We then experience a crossing of the Puna on Route 40 to the Salinas Grandes, an open white space of more than 100km surrounded by volcanoes, where the horizon seems endless. Finally, crossing the highest point of the itinerary, we will enjoy the best view of the Eastern Andean Range going down via Cuesta de Lipan, dropping 2000m in 22km, possibly spotting condors and witnessing the transition from desert to the fertile highlands of the valleys. We finish our day in the picturesque village of Purmamarca at the foot of the famous Mount of Seven Colours. Maximum altitude 4170 m/13,680 ft; altitude at arrival 2300 m/7,546 ft. * Please note that our larger pieces of luggage will be transported to/from Purmamarca directly for us by separate vehicle, so please pack all that you'll need for our journey in your day pack. Overnight in Pumamarca. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 11 Safari to the Clouds - Humahuaca - Salta We return to Salta, closing our looped route by way of the another spectacular point of Northwest Argentina: Humahuaca Gorge. The area delights with its brightly coloured rock formations and a vast product mix of minerals and natural agents. We'll see the Serranía de Hornocal, where centuries of erosion have uncovered contrasting coloured limestone bands on these saw-tooth massifs (some claim as many as 33 colours can be discerned, but we’ll leave the counting up to you). UNESCO declared the entire mountain valley here a World Heritage Site in 1983, both for the Serrania de Hornocal’s wondrous peaks and the historic Inca caravan road running through the region. Overnight in Salta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 12 Salta - Fly to Buenos Aires: City Touring This morning we'll fly to Buenos Aires, our necessary connecting point onward to Uruguay. And since we're here, we might as well see a bit of this very worthwhile city before crossing over to the last country on our journey. In the early part of the 20th century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world. The grand public buildings of Buenos Aires reflect this opulent era. Indeed the city is known as the "Paris of South America" because of its wide boulevards and European-style architecture. We'll begin our sightseeing in Buenos Aires on arrival (the exact content today will depend on our arrival time). Nearly 40% of the country's 33 million citizens live in Gran Buenos Aires (Greater Buenos Aires), which at first makes the city almost as imposing as New York or London. However, after a brief orientation, you will find that the compact city centre is accessible and easily explored on foot, by bus, taxi and underground. Overnight in Buenos Aires. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Buenos Aires: Walking Tour Today we have a half-day WALKING tour. Our first stop is the Centro Naval, one of the city's most exquisite buildings and a masterpiece of cast stone architecture. It's not generally open to the public, but sometimes they let you into the circular lobby. The Kavanagh Building, at the time of its construction in 1936, was the tallest building in South America, standing at about 120 m (400 ft) with over 30 stories. Designed as a residential structure, it took more than 16 years to sell the apartments in this Art Deco building. Palacio Paz is perhaps the most beautiful of the Beaux Arts mansions in Buenos Aires; the Circulo Militar looks plucked from the Loire Valley. It was the home of the Paz family and took almost 12 years to build; the patriarch who commissioned it died waiting. The General Jose de San Martin Monument celebrates General Jose de San Martin, who battled against Spain in the wars of independence and is known as the founder of the Argentine nation. The Palacio San Martin is another of the The Torre Monumental (British Clock Tower) is a 1916 gift from the British community in Buenos Aires, along with all other things British, was renamed in response to the Islas Malvinas/Falkland Islands War and is called the Argentine Big Ben by some. Decorated with British royal imperial symbols, the base was partly destroyed by an angry mob during an Islas Malvinas-Falkland Islands memorial service. Inside the tower you'll find a small Buenos Aires City Tourism Information Office. Retiro Station was opened in 1915 and was built with British technological assistance. Four British architects designed it, and the steel structure was made in Liverpool, England, and shipped to Argentina to be assembled. Our tour ends in the Galerias Pacifico in time for your lunch break. This is the most famous shopping mall in Buenos Aires, opened in 1891. The building was designed to recall the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, with its long halls, glass cupola, and several tiers of shops. Ask your Tour Leader about the possibility of seeing an optional Tango Show this evening (in order to leave this option open, we don't include dinner this evening). Overnight in Buenos Aires. Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 14 Buenos Aires, Argentina - Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay Today we travel the short distance to Uruguay by ferry/hydrofoil (have your passports handy!). Uruguay is the smallest country we visit on our tour -- slightly smaller than the US state of Washington. It is surrounded by the two giants, Brazil and Argentina, and is blessed with a long Atlantic shoreline. Home to just over 3.4 million inhabitants, Uruguay is an important agricultural country and its human population is vastly outnumbered by cattle, sheep and horses. Colonia del Sacramento is one of the Southern Cone's unappreciated gems. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manoel Lobo, it occupied a strategic position almost exactly opposite Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata, but its major importance was as a source of contraband, undercutting Spain's jealously defended mercantile trade monopoly. British goods made their way from Colonia into Buenos Aires and the interior through surreptitious exchange with the Portuguese in the Parana delta; for this reason, Spanish forces intermittently besieged Portugal's riverside outpost for decades. The capital of its department, Colonia is a pleasant town of about 20,000, the streets of its historic colonial core are shaded by sycamores from the summer heat. In the course of the day, the town discloses its many aspects as sunlight strikes whitewashed colonial buildings and the river; the latter, living up to its name, is silvery in the morning, but turns brownish by midday. We will see the Real de San Carlos, a 10,000 seat bullring built at the turn of the century. Then our walking tour of Colonia begins at the Puerta de Campo, the restored Calle Manoel Lobo entrance to the old city, which dates from the governorship of Vasconcellos in 1745. A thick, fortified wall runs south along the Paseo de San Miguel to the river. Later we see Casa de Lavalleja, once the residence of General Lavalleja, and the ruins of the 17th century Convento de San Francisco and the 19th century Faro. Overnight in Colonia del Sacramento. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Colonia del Sacramento - Montevideo: City Tour This morning we drive along the Uruguayan Littoral (coast) to Montevideo. The littoral is that portion of Uruguay that fronts the Rio de la Plata and the Rio Uruguay, opposite Argentine Mesopotamia. Originally Indian and Gaucho country, it has become the country's most important agricultural area, the wheat fields and gardens of which feed the growing population of the capital. Montevideo is a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life. The historic heart of Uruguay's capital is an unspoiled tableau of 18th- and 19th-century colonial architecture. On arrival we'll tour the city; the main points of interest are the Old City, Constitution Square, Cathedral, Colonial Town Hall, Solis Theatre, Independence Square, at the center of which stands a monument dedicated to national hero, Jose Gervasio Artigas and his Mausoleum. Facing the square the Government House (Museum of the Presidents). The main commercial street, 18 de Julio, is lined with shops, cafes and office buildings. We stop for a photo at the Congress Building, the pride of Uruguay. It was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with 52 kinds of local marble and 12 types of wood. We drive past Prado neighbourhood, one of the oldest parks in the city, which hosts the famous sculpture La Diligencia (The Stage Coach), and ther monument to the last Charruas indians. Next is Batlle & Ordonez Park, the Obelisk, La Carreta (Covered Wagon) monument, and the Soccer Stadium. We'll stop at Plaza Virgilio and a monument dedicated to the Fallen Soldiers of the Navy, from which we have an excellent view of the city. Our return route takes us along the coast and beaches. Overnight in Montevideo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Montevideo & Vineyard Tour Today we will head out of the city and visit the charming Pueblo Eden. En route we'll stop at Lote 8 Olive Oil Boutique Plant, where we will visit their production facilities followed by a tasting of their olive oil with a selection of cheeses. Lote 8 is located in Eden Valley, a spot of rugged beauty, strategically-located at the foot of Dos Hermanos Hill. Its numerous natural streams with very good water, make for perfect conditions for olive trees. We then visit the rocky outcrops of Pueblo Eden. Several things call the attention of visitors, not only the cleanliness of the streets, the nicely kept houses and gardens, the simple but beautiful main plaza and church, but the amazing 360 degrees views to the fields and hills that surround Pueblo Eden. Here we taste the wines of Viña Eden Winery, including a chardonnay, a typical Tannat Reserva, and the Cerro Negro wine. Here we'll also enjoy a nice lunch with three different wine pairings -- a very relaxing way to end our adventure! We return to Montevideo in the afternoon. Overnight in Montevideo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 17 Departure Departure from Montevideo. BUEN VIAJE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast daily, several lunches, and most dinners (hotels & local restaurants). All transport (including internal flights), accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Domestic flights via local scheduled carriers as per the itinerary. Airport transfers for land & air customers.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, one dinner, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international (if applicable), visa fees/departure taxes, any excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs, visas (Paraguay), and shopping. Only Paraguay requires a visa, currently US$150 upon arrival (you do nothing in advance). You need only show your passport on arrival in Uruguay and Argentina.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in October ("spring") in the region, with warm-hot days on the coast and at lower elevations and comfortably warm days/cool nights at higher levels. Our tour in March ("fall") will also experience similar conditions -- a bit cooler than mid-summer and dry conditions inland away from the sea. We visit a large area on this trip and the conditions we encounter will be quite varied -- from cool and dry higher regions of the Andes (subject to sudden showers), to lush forests and semi-tropical inland and coastal regions. Overall, however, these are the best times to visit these destinations, outside the height of summer (Dec-Feb) when it can be hot, crowded, and expensive in some locales.

Transport and Travel Conditions Ground transport by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size') and location. Though we will have some full bus days, roads are generally in good condition (rougher in NW Argentina) though a little winding on some stretches. We feature numerous optional walking opportunities and walking tours on uneven surfaces. This tour is not strenuous in terms of physical activities, but in order to fully enjoy and experience the sites visited, you must be prepared for considerable walking at a leisurely pace. We also have a couple of internal flights via domestic carriers, which can in itself be fatiguing (you will have to be able to manage your luggage). This is definitely a full itinerary with plenty of moving around! Hotels generally provide baggage handling, but you must still be independent with your luggage, especially at airports. Most of this tour occurs at low-medium elevations, though on days 10&11 we spend brief periods above 3000m/10,000 ft, and then descend greatly for our overnight, so we do not require a high-altitude medical questionnaire for this tour (if you are concerned about this though, please consult with your doctor). For exact elevations, please refer to the tour itinerary. Our "Level 2" rating refers to the overall ambitious nature of the program, the tremendous amount of moving around we do, some early starts and full days of travel and activities, leisurely walks at sites and short walks to dinner, and a brief time spent at high elevation.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Accommodation Well-located, air-conditioned/heated, upper-range hotels and inns (3-4 star) used throughout. All hotels have en suite toilet and bath, though some may have shower only (ie no tub). Porter service is usually available (see 'inclusions') though you should be independent with your luggage, especially at airports. Single rooms are limited in number and likely smaller than twins. Due to the fact that most hotels in the region do not offer single accommodation rates, the MANDATORY SINGLE SUPPLEMENT (if you sign up to share and we fail to pair you) is 100% of the optional single supplement. Please click on "Map & Hotels" tab for more information

Staff and Support Tour Leader throughout, local guides at several locations, multiple drivers.

Its name was given due to the to resemblance to the traditional shape of a refined sugar loaf. The journey to the top is made in glass cable-cars. The first cable-car takes passengers to the top of Urca Hill, which rises 215 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views of the entire bay and its surrounding islands. At Urca Hill, passengers take the second cable-car to the top of Sugar Loaf, which rises 395 meters above sea level and offers a 360-degree view of the entire city including Botafogo and Copacabana Beaches, Corcovado Hill and Rio’s downtown. This tour departs the hotel after breakfast to visit the most famous landmarks sites of the city and see the natural beauty of Rio from above. Once at the top, they can use the panoramic elevators or escalators to get to the foot of the statute, as well as enjoy a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro. After that, they descend the mountain and head to the Sugar Loaf Mountain, where they join the two stages of the cable-car to get on top of the Hill and appreciate the 360 degree view of Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian Falls Excursion

The Brazilian Falls are located on the western side of the Paraná State in Brazil. They were declared Natural World Heritage in the year 1986 by the UNESCO. This Brazilian park with 185,000 hectares (458,000 acres) borders the Argentinean National Park and they are divided by the Iguazu River. Both parks make this region one of the largest natural protected areas in South America. The tour starts at the Visitors’ Center, designed to be the access to the park. The building functions as an embarking and disembarking station for visitors. In order to be able to start the circuits along with the catwalk floors, every visitor must take one of the modern panoramic view busses so as to move safely within the park. The length of the catwalk floors is 1,200 meters (0.8 miles) from where it is possible to get a breathtaking view of the 275 waterfalls. The four main rapids on the Brazilian side are Floriano, Deodoro, Benjamín Constant and Salto Unión or The Devil´s Throat. At the end of the path, everyone will get on a panoramic elevator that will take them to the bus units.

Iguazú National Park

The park was created in 1934 with the main aim to protect the majestic Iguazu Falls. In 1984, the UNESCO declared this place Natural World Heritage due to the beauty of the scenery and the biological diversity in this subtropical rainforest. The visit to the Iguazu National Park can be done via 3 circuits and on catwalks, best known as Lower Path, Higher path and the Devil´s Throat Path. The Lower Path is a 1,200-metre-walk (0.8 miles) that gives a great view of the majority of the rapids and falls from a front and lower point of view. The distances range from a bird’s eye point of view of The Devil’s Throat together with several Brazilian rapids, to spectacular close-ups to other falls. This walk has some high difficulty level due to the number of steps along the way. (Approximate duration: 2 hours). The Higher Path is a 1,300-metre-walk (0.9 miles) that will raise every visitor´s adrenaline level because of the vertigo of being at the edge of some waterfalls. This walk has breathtaking sceneries from a cliff-point outlook and this is the less effort demanding walk of the three traditional ones. No steps along the way. (Approximate duration: 1 hour). The Devil’s Throat has to be accessed via the Ecological Jungle Train, and everyone must get off at the stop named after this waterfall. From there, there is a stroll along the catwalk which is a winding path that goes around the islands for 1,100 meters (0.7 miles) and ends in the large balconies located on the edge of falls. There are no steps along the path.

Dinner and Tango Show at Café Los Angelitos

“Cafe de los Angelitos” is a live witness of more than one hundred years of Buenos Aires history with a parade of the most outstanding personalities of the political and artistic atmosphere from the 20th century. The mystical coffee house, inaugurated in 1890 with name of Bar Rivadavia by the Italian Bautisto Fazio, became a meeting point for “compadritos” (swaggerers) and “malandras” (scoundrels) towards the end of the 19th Century. With rudimentary premises and a dirt floor, the place was a scenario for the verbal duels of gaucho minstrels Gabino Ezeiza, Higuito Cazon and Jose BetinottiRemodeled again following an ambitious architecture project, conformed by three levels, it exhibits luxury and distinction every night with 21 artists that perform this live show.

Uruguai e Argentina

Uruguai e Argentina: Roteiro Completo e Gastos totais

Chip internacional Uruguai e Argentina

Quanto custou toda a viagem?

Uruguai: R$ 2.757

Argentina: R$1.132

Foz do Iguaçu: R$1.106

TOTAL= R$5.155

Our South America Itinerary: Highlights of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay

Salt flats in Purmamarca on our South America itinerary

We spent nine weeks travelling around South America, visiting five of the southern countries. A whirlwind of new aromas, sites, landscapes, and culture, our South America itinerary provided an ever-changing environment.

Below are the highlights of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, followed by our itinerary map.

Highlights of Argentina

We visited five regions of Argentina, each with its own distinct differences. Below are the highlights of the things to do in Argentina.

First-time visitors to Argentina: start here for our complete Argentina travel guide

Things to know before including Argentina in a South America travel itinerary

  • Language : Spanish is spoken with an Argentinean accent that pronounces the “ll” and “y” as “sh” and “j”, respectively.
  • Currency : Argentinean Pesos.
  • Safety : Petty crime, including personal theft, is common in Argentina, so vigilance is needed.
  • Intracity Buses: Surprisingly comfortable buses are a common way to travel long distances between cities in Argentina. Affordable first-class seats recline like a bed and meals are served.
  • Hotel Taxes : Tourists paying with a foreign credit card do not have to pay the 21% hotel tax in most cases. Look for these savings in the fine print on hotel pages on booking.com.
  • Siesta : Outside of Buenos Aires, most of the towns we visited take a siesta resulting in nearly all retail and often tourist establishments closing from 1 pm to 5 pm daily.
  • Mealtime : Many restaurants open for dinner at 6 or even 8 pm, as traditionally, dinner is late.
  • Tipping in Argentina : A 10% tip is customary in eateries.
  • SUBE card : A SUBE card will save significant money on public transportation in many cities in Argentina. Click here to find the nearest place to get a card .

Buenos Aires – the capital of Argentina

A modern cosmopolitan city, Buenos Aires has it all. Argentina’s capital is also its largest city. Fresh and exciting, it’s filled with culture, history, and tango. We only spent a week here but could easily have stayed longer.

Salta – Purmamarca – Cafayate

From the wine-growing region of Cafayate to the salt flats of Purmamarca, we explored the diverse and colourful landscapes surrounding Salta in our own vehicle. In Salta, we uncovered interesting history and architectural variety before spending an exciting evening at peña (regional folk concert).

Purmamarca as a stop on our South America itinerary

Iguazu Falls

One of the seven wonders of nature, Iguazu Falls is a seemingly endless display of powerful waterfalls cascading over a 2.7-kilometre stretch of the Iguazu River at the corner of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. An impressive example of nature; it is worth the effort to get here. Be sure to allocate time to see the falls from both the Argentina and Brazil sides and to shop in Paraguay.

Santa Fe – Rosario – Cordoba

Not on the typical tourist track, we visited Santa Fe for personal reasons, adding Cordoba and Rosario to make our road trip more exciting. What we found were agricultural plains, intertwining waterways, friendly people, and Spanish-influenced architecture.

The northern tip of Patagonia was our southernmost point in Argentina. San Carlos de Bariloche’s strong German influence is obvious in its architecture. From Bariloche, we had one of our best days as we crossed the Andes mountains with Cruce Andino using five buses and three boats.

Bariloche is one of the highlights of Argentina on any South American itinerary

Highlights of Chile

Like in Argentina, we visited five distinctively different regions of Chile. Below are the Chile highlights.

First-time visitors to Chile: start here for our complete Chile travel guide

Things to know before including Chile in a South America itinerary

  • Language : Spanish is spoken with a Chilean accent that is difficult for even Spanish natives to understand.
  • Currency : Chilean Pesos.
  • Safety : Chile is often rated as the safest country in South America and in Latin America. However, caution against petty theft is still necessary.
  • Hotel Taxes : Tourists paying with a foreign credit card do not have to pay the 19% hotel tax in most cases. Look for these savings in the fine print on hotel pages on booking.com .
  • Tipping in Chile : A 10% service charge (tip) is often added to your bill in restaurants, cafés and pubs. Look for it before you double-tip.
  • Memorials : Memorial structures (rather than crosses) mark road fatalities and serve as a too-frequent reminder to watch our speed.
  • Earthquakes : Much of Chile is located in an active seismic zone resulting in frequent earthquakes. We felt two while we were there.

Santiago – the capital of Chile

Another cosmopolitan city striving for international success, Santiago, Chile is an oasis in the arid landscape. It features an eclectic mix of contemporary and historical architectural styles.

Atacama desert

The world’s driest nonpolar desert is full of vivid colours, flamingos, and salt flats. Stargazers know the Atacama desert has some of the world’s clearest skies. Altitude sickness aside, the archaeological and geological sites in the region are worth exploring.

Rainbow Valley, in the Atacama Desert, Chile is on our South America itinerary

La Serena, Coquimbo, and Isla Damas

La Serena and Coquimbo are coastal communities, offering an ideal place to relax on the beach or head north to Isla Damas to see the penguins . The nearby Elqui Valley is the other region well known for stargazing. An hour south, don’t miss the petroglyphs at Valle del Encanto .

Humboldt Penguins on Isla Choros near Isla Damas

Valparaiso and Viña del Mar

The port of entry for cruise ships heading to Santiago, Valparaiso , is a colourful, avant-garde artist community built on steep hills covered in street art . If you are looking for a quieter version of this city, head to nearby Viña del Mar.

Puerto Varas

Osorno volcano rising from the lake is the identifying feature of this town. The charming German colonial architecture features an iconic wood slat facade. Be sure to schedule an extra day to visit Chiloe Island.

Highlights of Uruguay

We visited three coastal cities in Uruguay.

First-time visitors to Uruguay: start here for our complete Uruguay travel guide

Things to know before including Uruguay in a South America itinerary

  • Language : Spanish with an Argentinean accent (see above).
  • Currency : Uruguayan Pesos.
  • Safety : Uruguay is considered one of the safest countries in South America, but caution against petty theft is still necessary.
  • VAT (IVA) Taxes : If you purchase expensive items that you are taking out of the country, you can get the 15% IVA tax back (this seems to change often).
  • Restaurant Dining: Many restaurants offer tax-free dining for tourists; simply ask.

Montevideo – the capital of Uruguay

A port city with European charm, Montevideo is the capital of South America’s most progressive country. Uruguay is an agricultural nation, with wool and beef being two of its primary exports.

Palacio Salvo in Plaza Independencia in Montevideo Uruguay

Punta del Este

With beachfront resorts, restaurants, bars, and fun, Punta del Este is where well-to-do Argentineans vacation. Famous for some of its unusual artwork, it is a more expensive city to visit than either Montevideo or Colonia.

Colonia de Sacramento

One of Uruguay’s oldest cities, Colonia de Sacramento’s charming old town is an easy day trip via ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Once here, the provincial charm will captivate you.

Highlights of Brazil

Travelling via cruise ship, we sailed along the Brazilian coast on the Azamara Pursuit , hitting five Brazilian ports: Rio de Janeiro (for two days, including New Year’s Eve), Santos (the port city and beach town of Saõ Paulo), Buzios (former fishing village), Paraty (Portuguese colonial village), and Itajai (a stopover city for the Volvo around the world yacht race).

Although we skipped the Amazon, our exposure to the Brazilian rainforest in Iguazu Falls was enough for me to contract dengue fever . As a result, I highly recommend a strong insect repellent in the Brazilian rainforest.

Christ the Redeemer Corcovado Mountain our Rio de Janeiro stop on our South America itinerary

Things to know before including Brazil in a South America itinerary

  • Language : Portuguese.
  • Currency : Brazilian real.
  • Crime: Brazil doesn’t rate so well, with one of the worst violent crime rates in the world. Unfortunately, it also has a high rate of petty crime, and visitors must use vigilance or will likely fall victim. See these safety tips for Rio de Janeiro .

Building a South America itinerary

Most of the countries on this page are huge, and ground transportation times between regions are long. With so much to see and only nine weeks to do it all, we flew between major regions, drove within certain regions, took boats across the Andes, and cruised the Brazilian coast.

Our flights to South America and our internal flights were all on LATAM using South American Air passes.

Our South America itinerary map

Driving in Argentina and Chile

In general, the roads are good (not great), even in the desert. However, and I can’t stress this enough, Google maps often tried to send us down old dirt roads when nearby modern roads were available for the same journey.

We used RentalCars.com for the three rentals that went smoothly. As a conglomerator, they offer cars from local and international dealerships, often at better prices. Most importantly, they have English-speaking customer service and a reputation for solving problems.

Visa requirements

We travel on New Zealand passports; therefore, in South America, we only require visas to enter Paraguay. However, every country has different rules for citizens of other countries. For instance, friends travelling on USA passports needed visas to enter Brazil.

To learn what visas you need, visit either your own country’s state department or ministry of foreign affairs page or the ministry of the exterior or external affairs page of the country you are visiting.

A market in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay

Travel Insurance

We don’t leave New Zealand without travel insurance. It’s a personal choice that has paid off well for us as we have ended up in hospitals on four continents and had a wallet stolen in the USA, resulting in a missed flight.

We have partnered with InsureMyTrip, because they are the best option to compare plans and find the right coverage for you. They have thousands of travel insurance plans and a one-of-a-kind recommendation engine to help travellers find the right plan. Most importantly, they will be there for you before, during and after your trip if you should need anything – especially help with a claim with the provider. A few final South America itinerary planning tips

  • The southern hemisphere seasons are summer (December to February), autumn (March to May), winter (June to August), and spring (September to November).
  • Cars drive on the right, the steering wheel is on the left (same as the USA).
  • If you don’t speak Spanish (or Portuguese while in Brazil), you might want to bring a translation tool or hire a tour guide. In high-traffic tourist areas and top hotels, there is usually an English speaker, but don’t rely on it.
  • While credit cards are widely accepted in South America, they are not used everywhere. Cash is often required. In Chile, a 5%- 10% service fee is often added when credit cards are used.
  • There is frequently a charge for water in restaurants; plus, some Argentinean eateries also add a ‘curierto” or cover charge.
  • A single kiss on the cheek is a common greeting (and goodbye), even with people you meet for the first time.
  • Don’t miss these South American safety tips for travellers .

I have never been to South America, but I hope to spend a significant amount of time there on a round-the-world trip we are planning for a couple years from now. This post will definitely come in handy then!

So many of these places are on my bucket list including Atacama and the salt flats. I’ve been to Brazil but only Manaus, so I want to see more of Brazil as well. Thank you for all of the tips and information – this looks like an amazing trip!

It’s really interesting to read your itinerary, Rhonda, as I’ve been loving your South America posts. NINE weeks of travel? I’m so jealous, but what a great way to see the area. I’m especially keen to visit Argentina and the Bahia area of Brazil.

June 14, 2019 at 10:24 pm

Wow, this is what you call an itinerary! We are off to Argentina for two weeks at the end of October, very excited about Iguazu Falls and Patagonia but unfortunately don’t have time for Salta and the north.

June 14, 2019 at 3:47 pm

Loved all the details you’ve included so others can be prepared. Wow! Nine weeks?! What a luxury to have so much time to explore. I’ve always wanted to see Iguazu Falls, but you’ve pointed out several more sights I’m adding to my list, too!

My family lived in Central America when I was a child and when visited all the countries of South America, but that was SO long ago I have no memories and would love to go to Argentina and Patagonia!

I loved reading through this guide and enjoyed your beautiful pictures. My husband and I spent 5 months travelling through South America about 10 years ago and it brought back some lovely memories of our favourite places. e.g the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had in Bariloche! We never made it to Paraguay or Uruguay and would love to go back.

June 14, 2019 at 3:12 am

Great itinerary. We have only been to Colombia, in South America. It was amazing, and we want to check out more South America now. We will definitely keep this for later when we explore more of South America. 🙂

I love this post! Though the only South American country I’ve visited is Ecuador, living there for three months made me really want to visit more of the continent.

I’d love to go to Argentina. My son Isaak befriended a kid that moved from there to here. He didn’t know any English. Isaak would draw him pictures, and motion things for him to understand what was going on. I think it would be a great place for Isaak to see. We had him research it last year.

You went a ton of places! They all have special things in each photo.

I think if I had to choose one photo to hop into I’d pick: Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. I like street art.

I can see why you visited so many. It would be difficult to pick just one. Chile and Brazil would be on my list.

Your post makes me wistful. My parents were Christian missionaries, and we did our first mission trip to Santiago and Temuco, Chile, in 1970 when I was 11 years old. After language school in Guadalajara, Mexico, we returned to Chile in 1972. We lived in Viña del Mar, Puyehue, and Osorno, for eight months, but due to the stresses of the Allende government, we were transferred to Asunción, Paraguay, where I graduated from high school in 1976. I visited Yguazú the first time when I was 14 years old, and I have traveled to Uruguay and Argentina, as well. My parents served in Paraguay until 1983, and we all returned for a visit in 2001. I long to return to the southern cone of South America, and I envy your travels. Thanks for sharing!

What a trip Rhonda! Fabulous. I have seen little of South America. Only Peru. 3 weeks at that. Due for a long, comprehensive trip to enjoy it. My Ecuadorian-American buddy has oodles of suggestions for Ecuador and I would love a return trip to Peru.

I loved all the things to know before visiting. Well done and very complete for those that want to travel to South America.

Have a fabulous day, Rhonda. ♥

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Urbane sophistication and the grandness of nature, the epicurean pleasures of a fine glass of wine and the cultural delights of a tango show, the Great Outdoors and the Marvels of Civilization; all of this and more can be found in stupendous South America. From the Andres to the Atlantic, from the Plaza de Armas to the Plaza de Mayo, this is a journey that will stir your imagination and leave you begging for more.

Customizable Itinerary

Santiago – arrival in south america.

Touch down on the outskirts of scintillating Santiago, nestled between the calm blue waters of the Pacific, the teeth-like protrusions of the Andes, and filled with culture and history unlike any other Latin American capital. A private driver will be awaiting your arrival and will transport you to your elegant and perfectly located hotel, where you can rest and recover from your long journey before spending the afternoon exploring.

Your expertly guided tour of Santiago begins at the gorgeous Moneda Palace, a neoclassical marvel that is one of the only buildings of its kind on the continent. Turn next to the Plaza de Armas, the heart and soul of Santiago, surrounded by the venerable and august Metropolitan Cathedral, the stately Central Post Office Building, and the colonial Palacio de la Real Audiencia de Santiago. Then make your way to the Parque Forestal, a gorgeous urban park that is home to two of Chile’s greatest art museums, before making the climb up San Cristobal Hill to gain an inspiring panorama of the city below and the ocean beyond. You’ll also tour two of Santiago’s quaintest neighborhoods, the artsy and endearing barrio of Bellavista and the handicraft village of Los Graneros del Alba.

What's Included:

Santiago – Exploring Sensational Santiago

Today, head further afield to discover Chile’s other urban wonders, or make for the valleys of Chile’s burgeoning wine industry to try some of the tastiest exports of this captivating country. Those interested in urban grandeur would do well to head northwest to the port city of Valparaiso, a simply breathtaking metropolis that is hailed as “The Jewel of the Pacific.” You’ll find the oldest stock exchange in Latin America here and Chile’s first public library, as well as stunning edifices like the Chilean Naval Office and the Valparaiso Customs House. Nearby is the charming village of Vina del Mar, where you’ll be entranced by the scene on the beach and delighted by the Flower Clock and Wulff Castle, both local landmarks that have become major tourist attractions.

Oenophiles will want to make their way inland, to the fecund valleys that have quickly become one of the world’s best up-and-coming wine producers. Blessed with an impeccable natural climate – it combines the best of the wine regions of California and France – and an impressive population of innovative wine makers. Chilean wineries like Cousino Macul and Concha y Toro have firmly established these New World vintners as among the world’s best. You’ll learn all about the history and science behind growing grapes in Chile, get a lovely tour of the sleek and alluring facilities and, of course, a taste of the fruits of their labor.

The evening sees you back in Santiago, where you might want to check out the city’s excellent jazz scene: the Club de Jazz de Santiago is arguably the city’s best, and attracts the finest jazz talent from around the world.

Puerto Varas – The Wonders of Chile

Head to the airport to board a plane that will take you south to the reaches of Patagonia, the rugged portion of country that earned its name when Magellan thought the natives were a race of giants. You alight at Puerto Montt, whose horizon is dominated by the picturesque peak of the Osorno Volcano, and whose stateliness echoes Mount Fuji in Japan. You’ll get a chance to walk along the pristine Pelluco Beach and marvel at Chinquihue on the azure blue waters of the Tenglo Canal before visiting the scenic town of Angelmo, a darling fishing port known throughout the country for its fine wool goods and elegant woodworking.

Continue on to Puerto Varas, a picturesque German town nestled on the shores of Llanquihue Lake, and climb the gentle slope of Philippi Hill to gain an incredible vista over this simply spectacular landscape. The seemingly endless blue stretch of the lake gives way to the prominent visage of Osorno, and the Germanic-style buildings like Puerto Varas Church offer a charming addition to this natural wonderland. The evening sees you in your hotel in Puerto Varas.

Bariloche – Crossing into Argentina

You’ll leave Chile and enter Argentina in inimitable fashion as you wind your way through Chile’s Lake District, traveling by land and by water as you cross the borderlands. A bus will take you to the town of Petrohue, where you’ll hop on board a catamaran that will take you across the glass-smooth waters of Lake Todos Los Santos before alighting in Puella. A rustic and traditional lunch will fill you up and prepare you for the rest of your journey.  Be sure to have your camera ready because you’ll want to record some of the amazing sights of this expedition.

A car will take you past the border crossing into Argentina, concluding at Puerto Frias, where a boat will bring you across one of Argentina’s sensational lakes to the village of Puerto Alegre. A bus ride will take you through the west of Argentina until Puerto Blest, where you’ll board another boat that will take you across Lake Nahuel Huapi, arguably the most picturesque stretch of water in this peerless region. You disembark at Puerto Panuelo, where a car will be waiting to transfer you to Bariloche.

Bariloche – The Many Charms of Beautiful Bariloche

You’ll have today to discover the secrets of Bariloche, renowned for its Swiss-like atmosphere and the panoply of outdoor activities. Take a serene and leisurely cruise on Lake Nahuel Huapi, explore the matchless beauty of Nahuel Huapi National Park, or ride the historic steam train that will take you up into the Argentine plateaus, much as visitors have done since the early 20th century. Those looking for more rigorous activities would do well to hire a knowledgeable guide to lead you through this awe-inspiring country or take you to glaciers and marvelous panoramas of Cerro Tronador.

Nature lovers will definitely want to make a detour to the unique Bosque de Arrayanes , where orange trees bathe the region in gorgeous color and capture the imagination with their indescribable beauty and incredible rareness; an island of Japan is the only other place where you’ll find a similar grove on Earth. You can also engage in more unconventional outdoor activities, from horseback riding to paragliding, before the afternoon sees you boarding a flight to Buenos Aires, the irresistible capital of Argentina.

Buenos Aires – Discovering the Paris of Latin America

Buenos Aires is a city unlike any other, with a European ambiance and a flair that is all South America. You’ll get a great first look at this majestic metropolis on a fully guided tour, led by an informative and friendly guide who will show you all the highlights. Begin at the noteworthy Plaza de Mayo, a center for Argentine activism since 1810, where you’ll find the iconic Casa Rosada, the “Pink House,” that serves as the executive mansion of the President of Argentina. Then stop by the posh and elegant district of San Telmo, the oldest barrio (neighborhood) in Buenos Aires, where the colonial feel lingers in the air and the cobblestone streets impart a cozy feel.

Then turn to the bright and boisterous neighborhood of La Boca, where the vibrant Caminito (street museum and a traditional alley) echoes the verve and vitality of this Italian immigrant community.  This is one of the birthplaces of the tango and the home to Boca Juniors, one of the most successful soccer teams in the history of Argentina. Continue on to the stately and sedate neighborhoods of Palermo and La Recoleta, where Argentina’s elite live, work and play, before visiting the newly improved dockyards at Puerto Madero. The architecture here is varied and innovative, and it is the perfect place to get a sense of the newest trends in Buenos Aires life.

This evening is spent in spectacular fashion as you attend one of the city’s famous tango shows, where the best dancers, singers and musicians in the world will entertain you in true Argentine fashion while you enjoy a delicious meal, complete with sumptuous wine and decadent desserts.

If you would like to learn more about Zicasso’s custom trips to Buenos Aires and Argentina, visit the Argentina tours section.

Buenos Aires – The Mystique and Romance of Argentine Cowboys

Head out to the wide pampas (plains), where cattle have been herded for generations by the dramatic gauchos . You’ll get a first-hand glimpse of the impressive riding skills of these amazing individuals, learn all about their culture, history and traditions, and even enjoy a delicious lunch cooked outdoors over an open fire, in much the same way that food has been served for centuries on these rolling plains. It is a voyage that you will recount to your friends for years, regaling them with the sights, sounds and smells of this stupendous region, where the very soul of Argentina seems to spring to life.

The afternoon sees you back in Buenos Aires, where you can relax in your hotel before setting out for a world-class dinner.  The beef here is justifiably renowned for its high quality, but there are also a number of excellent eateries dedicated to cuisines from across the globe, from Italian fare to Pan-Asian cuisine.

Colonia del Sacramento – A Luxurious Getaway on the Shores of the Rio de la Plata

Cross the wide Rio de la Plata from Argentina into tiny Uruguay, a model democracy in a continent full of dictatorships and a small, yet proud, nation wedged between the two giants of South America. You disembark in Uruguay’s oldest city, the enchanting town of Colonia del Sacramento, whose allegiances have changed hands nearly a dozen times as the Spanish fought the Portuguese and the Brazilians fought the Argentinians for this strategic river post. The historic city center was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and is filled with romantic reminders of the city’s vibrant past, from the City Gate to the Parque de Ferrando, to the former bullring at the Real de San Carlos.

Ramble down the Rambla Costanera, one of the finest streets in the city, before shopping at the Feria de la Ciudad, one of the best-loved local markets in all of Uruguay. You spend the evening at one of Colonia’s finest hotels, where you’re sure to feel all the magic of this august and venerable city.

Day  11 - 12

Montevideo – Encountering Uruguay

Spend another day enjoying all the highlights of mesmerizing Colonia del Sacramento, seeing the sights you might have missed the day before. Make your way to the tree lined Plaza Mayor to see some of the city’s favorite attractions and finest museums. Visit the Convent of San Francisco dating from the 17th century, the magnificent Basilica of the Holy Sacrament, and the fascinating Portuguese Museum, filled with examples of Portuguese jewelry, furniture, military uniforms, and even maps of some of the greatest Portuguese naval expeditions.

In the afternoon, you’ll be transferred to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and the political, cultural, and social heart of the country. Drop your bags off at the hotel, and then hit one of the city’s excellent parillas , (grills) where the meat is sure to rival even the best offerings from their more famous southern neighbor.

Day  13 - 14

Montevideo – An Introduction to Magnificent Montevideo

Montevideo is a city dedicated to the reminders of Uruguay’s greatest political heroes, and your guided tour will show off all of the memorials and monuments of this often overlooked world capital. Start at the elegant Ciudad Vieja, the oldest part of Montevideo, located on a small peninsula that juts prominently out into the waters of the Rio de la Plata. You’ll walk around the perimeter of Plaza Constitucion, where you’ll find many of the cities oldest and most important buildings, like the former Cabildo that now houses an impressive museum, and the opulent Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral.

Cross through the Gateway of the Citadel – the last remaining remnant of the once mighty fortress that dominated the Ciudad Vieja – before entering Plaza Independencia, where you’ll encounter many of the government buildings where Uruguay’s daily business is run.  You’ll also see the striking and baroque towers of the Salvo Palace and the iconic Teatro Solis, the national theater of Uruguay and one of the best-known performance venues in Latin America.

Head for the Prado, one of Uruguay’s prettiest neighborhoods and the site of its largest public park, and take in the astounding juxtaposition of botanical gardens and fine architecture on your way. Finish off in high style as you drive by some of the most expensive homes and exclusive neighborhoods in the city. The evening sees you back at your hotel.

Day  15 - 16

Iguazu Falls – Turning to a Natural Wonder

Leave Montevideo and fly to Puerto Iguazu, the Argentine city that is located near the matchless Iguazu Falls National Park, home to the eponymous Iguazu Falls, one of the largest and most spectacular collections of cataracts on the planet. After arriving at the visitor center in the heart of the park, you’ll board a train that will take you to a series of well maintained and easy to navigate paths that run throughout the park, getting you up close and personal with this powerful natural phenomenon. The highlight of the park is the Devil’s Throat, a half-mile long precipice where nearly half of all the water flow is diverted; it is truly a sight not to be missed, and it certainly puts Niagara Falls to shame.

The late afternoon sees you at your hotel on the Brazilian side of the falls, and in the evening you’ll enjoy a scrumptious dinner among your entrancing surroundings.

Buenos Aires – The Glories of Nature, the Grandeur of Civilization

This morning, you’ll receive an expertly guided tour of the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls .  You might find the waterworks less remarkable from this vantage point, but the fecund plant life and exciting fauna is sure to make up for it. Make your way through the diverse and spellbinding forests that surround the falls, learning about the many species of wildlife that call this area home, as well as the amazing biodiversity that makes this area one of the greatest natural areas on the continent.

The afternoon sees you back at Puerto Iguazu, ready to board the plane that will return you to Buenos Aires for one final night in Latin America. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of bountiful Buenos Aires, and reminisce about all of the incredible experiences you’ve enjoyed over the past twelve days.

Buenos Aires – Returning Home

This morning, enjoy one last breath of Latin America before a private driver takes you from your hotel to the airport in Buenos Aires. You’ll be sure to spend most of the plane ride home remembering the best moments from your South American adventure, and trying to plan your return visit to this unforgettable continent.

Trip Highlights

  • Explore the best cities and most picturesque countryside of Chile, from spellbinding Santiago to miraculous Valparaiso, to the valleys that produce some of South America’s best wine
  • Journey into Chile’s Lakes Region, soaking in the natural beauty and the charm of its people, before crossing into Argentina in inimitable fashion

Triple Frontier: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay

The region of Foz do Iguaçu is known as “Triple Frontier” because it presents a geopolitical characteristic of borders, which is present in few places in the world. In Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina make a triple frontier, with border cities.

Triple Frontier: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay

The three countries meet at the same point, the mouth of the Iguaçu River. In this place is located the 3 Borders Landmark , one of the most historically important tourist attractions of the region: in each country there is a landmark that represents the encounter and the proximity between the nations.

Three Borders Landmark: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay

Although Foz do Iguaçu is not the only triple frontier in the world, it is one of the most peculiar because it is a tourist region, and because of the proximity of the cities in each country, since Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazu and Ciudad del Este are only a few kilometers of the border.

In this way, the integration of the region is quite visible, there is a cultural, economic and social exchange between the 3 cities that make the environment dynamic and interesting as a life experience. It is common to use currencies from other countries in the cities, just as there is the custom of hearing different accents of the Spanish and person speaking Guarani through the streets.

Visiting Foz do Iguaçu is an opportunity for exchanges, cultural and geopolitical knowledge. Tourism benefits from this condition since the tourist can meet 3 countries in the same day. Have you considered coffee in Paraguay, lunch in Brazil and dinner in Argentina?

Among the tourist attractions of the region are the Iguazu Falls , which lie on the border between Brazil and Argentina , and the Itaipu Dam , which is located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.
