Day 1: arrival maumere – moni ( d ).

After breakfast, we continue to visit Riung National Park. We take Boat trip to Kalong, Pulau Tiga & Rutong Island. Enjoy the crystal clear water and the beautiful coral and Enjoy the snorkeling, swimming and beach relaxing in Riung National Park.    Overnight will be in Pondok SVD Riung

Day 4:    Riung – Soa – Bena Village – Bajawa (B)

After breakfast, we proceed to So’a Hot Spring Water for relaxing and then proceed to visit Bena Traditional Village. Continue drive for your Hotel in Bajawa. Overnight in Edelweis Bajawa

Day 5:    Bajawa – Aimere Village – Ranamese Lake – Ruteng (B)

After breakfast, we then proceed to Ruteng. On the way to Ruteng, we will visit Aimere Village to see Arak process. Photo stop at Ranamese crater Lake to see the panoramic of Ranamese’s Lake. Overnight in Sindha Hotel Ruteng

Day 6:    Ruteng – Spiderweb Rice field – Labuan Bajo (B)

This morning you will visit Rutengpuu, a traditional Manggarainese village to see their unique slander-shaped houses and spend time with the local people. Afterwards, continue your journey overland towards Labuan Bajo with stops at Lembor and Cancar where you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of rice fields.

Day 07 : L abuan Bajo -K anawa   – R inca Island – K along     [B/L/D]

In the Morning you will be pick up and transfer directly to the harbor, then continue by local boat to Kanawa island. When arrive in Kanawa, you can do snorkeling and swimming around the island. Lunch will be served on board while you proceed to Rinca Island.

Day 08: Kalong – Padar – Departure [B/L/D]

In the early morning around 04.00, we continue the program around 3 hours cruise to the uninhabited Padar Island. This is the third largest island of the National Park and walk to the highest point on the island to enjoy the magnificent scenery. Then cruise back to Labuan Bajo to catch your flight to next destination.

Komodo Flores Tour 10 Days (Car Trip)

Day 4. labuan bajo-wae rebo village for overnight.

• Start the Komodo Flores tour by picking you up by our agency at your hotel and directly driving to Denge Village.
• The stop will be made at Melo Village to see the panorama of Labuan Bajo and around 25 minutes from Labuan Bajo.
• Continue driving to Lembor Village to see the widest flat rice field and having lunch at Lembor Village.
• Some Stops on the way to Dintor Village while taking pictures.
• Arrive at Dintor Village and directly trekking to Wae Rebo Village about 8-kilo meters while listening to the natural sounds of birds along the rain forest (2,5-3 hours depends on the stamina).
• Welcome ceremony at the village, a Wae Lu’u (as a respect towards the previous ancestor (in the form of donation) will be handled by our agency (you are part of Wae Rebo).
• After the welcoming ceremony is finished, you are the part of the village no matter where are you coming from, then time to explore Wae Rebo Village (please do not take any picture when entering the main gate of the village, you may take the pictures after finishing welcome ceremony) you can do and follow the daily traditional activities of the local people and may visit one of the houses there to know more the real life of the local people.
• In the afternoon, you may have a shower located 5 minutes from the village area (it is a local style shower made of bamboo in which the water is in the spring, it is very cold.
• Dinner will be served in the traditional way (sit on the traditional mat made of pandan leaf, the meals are in the middle and you will sit in a circle.
• Then after dinner, you may relax in front of or in the middle of the village yard while waiting for bedtime (please wear a jacket due to it is very cold).
• Time to sleep, hope you will get a nice dream and wake up for a new lovely day.
• You will hear no more music or any sounds of the crowd but the sounds from the animals (not wild animals like tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, and dinosaur).

The Best Komodo Island Tour: Exploring Komodo National Park with Flores XP Tours

Of all my favorite things in this world, lizards are at the top of the list, right next to long-term travel , team trivia nights, and guacamole. After knowing me for about five minutes, anyone could tell you that I have a profound love for these scaly creatures. So you can imagine how excited I was when I learned that I could take a three day Komodo boat tour and see some of these fascinating creatures up close!

In order to take my dream Komodo Island boat tour, I caught a flight from Bali to the Island of Flores. Flores is home to Komodo National Park and it’s only an hour flight if you’re traveling from Bali.

I had no idea what to expect from my Komodo Island boat tour. I knew the landscape was rugged and desertlike. I hoped I’d see lizards. And that was about it.

So after bidding farewell to the smoothie bowls and surfer beaches of Bali, I hopped on a tiny plane and flew to the hub of all Komodo, Indonesia tourism, Labuan Bajo .

Choosing the Best Komodo Island Tour

I heard about the Flores XP Three Day Dragon Tour from a fellow travel blogger. She had a great experience with this Komodo boat tour and after doing some research on the company, I knew these were the people I wanted to travel with.

Tours with Flores XP are detailed and well-organized. Tons of tour companies around Labuan Bajo have Komodo day trips and liveaboard options , but Flores XP offers beachside camping.

I thought three days of sunsets on a private beach sounded dreamy. I also loved how their itinerary included two days of Komodo Dragon hikes and plenty of snorkeling.

Day 1 of the Flores XP Komodo Dragon Tour: Komodo Island Snorkeling and Beaches

At 7:30 am, Flores XP picked me up at my Labuan Bajo hostel and I met my boat-mates. There were five of us from all over the world – a couple from London, solo travelers from the Netherlands and California, and myself.

Down at the pier, we boarded the simple but sturdy boat that would be our home for the next three days. Paul, a tour guide and divemaster, gave us our first daily briefing while we ate breakfast. Before most of the world was awake, we were sailing out of the harbor and toward Komodo National Park, Indonesia .

Komodo National Park covers several islands within a few-hour boat ride of Labuan Bajo, including Rinca, Komodo, and Padar. The park was established in 1980 to protect the area’s most famous resident: the Komodo dragon.

But dragons will have to wait until tomorrow.

Komodo Snorkeling and Beach Day at Kanawa

Just as we started to find our sea legs, we arrived at our first stop: the little island of Kanawa. While adjusting to our flippers and snorkels, fish surrounded us in the clear blue water.

I wanted to dive right in, but I learned something about myself on Kanawa that would stay with me throughout the entire trip.

I learned that I’m terrible at jumping into the water in snorkel gear.

I know, I know – it’s not that hard. You’re supposed to be an adult about it and just jump in. But I was so afraid of breathing in saltwater through my snorkel tube, choking, and being swept away with the sea that I couldn’t bring myself to do a normal jump into the water.

So instead I sat on the back of the boat, slowly edging my way toward the water, until I managed to hurl myself in like a kid bellyflopping off a high dive. I came up sputtering and spewing. Water filled my snorkel tube anyway, but that didn’t change anything. I never learned.

I had snorkeled before, but it was nothing like this. Small striped fish darted around brain-shaped masses of coral in bright reds and yellows. Fanny, our snorkeling guide, swam in slow circles, pointing out anthias and sweetlips. Nestled between rocks, I saw little fish dancing in the tentacles of a dangerous-looking sea anemone.

There were a few other boats docked at Kanawa and about a dozen other tourists relaxing on the beach. We didn’t know it at the time, but this spot and its sparse inhabitants would be the most crowded beach we would see on our three-day tour.

Lunch each day was its own delicious affair. The crew prepared platters of rice, vegetables, meat and tempeh with fruit for dessert. Two days we even had French fries. I timed it once. Sunburned snorkelers can demolish an entire banquet platter of french fries in just under three minutes. Every meal, we ate like kings.

Komodo National Park Diving and Snorkeling at Mini Wall

After lunch, we cruised to Mini Wall, a well-known Komodo diving and snorkeling site. Only one person in our group was scuba dive certified and we watched as he and Paul pulled on wetsuits, strapped on oxygen tanks, and disappeared into the deep.

While everyone else dove gracefully into the sea, I scooted to the edge of the boat and dropped into the water like a bowling ball.

There was so much to see at Mini Wall just below the surface. The corals were further apart and seemed to stretch for miles. Somehow, we spotted a well-camouflaged stingray among the coral. When the divers finally surfaced, they were exhausted from swimming fast to keep up with a sea turtle.

Flores XP’s Pirate Beach Camp

In the evening, we began the journey to our campsite, a private pirate-themed beach on the island of Sebayur. The pirate beach camp, a facility shared with Flores XP Dive Camps and other Flores XP tour groups, had a casual restaurant and bar with WiFi and cold drinks.

We each stayed in comfortable open-air bungalows with real beds and ocean views. After much-needed fresh-water showers, we relaxed on the beach until the dinner bell rang.

Each night after dinner, Paul and Fanny briefed us on the plans for the next day. Exhausted from a day at sea and the excitement of a new adventure, we collapsed in our comfy beds by the ripe old hour of eight o’clock.

Day 2 of the Flores XP Komodo Island Boat Tour: Hiking With Komodo Dragons

The journey from Sebayur to Komodo Island took two hours, which I certainly didn’t mind. I loved riding around on our boat. It was noisy, a bit choppy, and the wind whipped my hair into amazing styles, but gliding across the sea felt so freeing.

There was no one around, just our little group on our little boat, watching the sun greet us from the top deck.

Happiness is easy to find there: a cup of instant coffee under a clear morning sky, the mountains, the waves, the wind in your face, a wooden boat all alone at sea – an adventure.

Trekking with Giants at Komodo Dragon National Park

At Komodo Island, we paid our park fee and met the guide who, armed only with a long wooden staff, would lead us into the woods to find deadly 150 pound lizards.

He’s the one who would presumably protect us in the event of an animal altercation, but thankfully those are quite rare. We were more concerned about whether or not we would even see a dragon.

“There are no guarantees,” the guide stressed, as the rising temperature and scorching sun lowered the chances of seeing lizards.

But maybe five minutes into the walk along the well-kept trail, we saw our first beauty. Waddling through the forest (not unlike me in flippers), she made her way to the watering hole just a few feet away from us. She was fascinating to watch- a relic from an older time, walking through this new world with confidence – a true apex predator.

As we watched her, our guide talked about the dragons and the island they call home. Komodo is volcanic and still active. One thousand people live here in a small fishing village that has been inhabited for generations. But even with over 5,000 giant lizards roaming freely, incidents between humans and dragons are very rare.

“Small Komodo dragons,” the guide explained as our lizard friend lapped up water, “are much faster than the big ones. They can run 12 miles per hour but are only aggressive if you get in their territory.” We took a cautious step back, just in case.

When I asked, “Is it true the mother dragons eat their own babies?” the guide seemed surprised. “Of course,” he responded like he was stating the obvious.

“They walk around like they own the place,” my friend said while a second, larger dragon sauntered over to the watering hole. Occasionally, the two dragons would stop and lift their noses to the air. They noticed our group, looked us over, and decided we weren’t worth further investigation. They definitely own the place.

On our walk out of the woods and back toward the park entrance, we saw two dragons relaxing in the shade near the ranger station. They seemed fond of the crawl spaces under buildings and napped underneath them like dogs. I don’t blame them. The temperature was steadily creeping past eighty degrees Fahrenheit and the sun was relentless.

By the way, the dragons in the pictures below are considered “medium size.”

These lizards near the tourist areas aren’t strategically placed here for photo-ops or anything. It turns out, tourists and lizards both like the enticing scent of food and reliable shade. The result? The dragons hang out under the cafe, just feet away from tourists.

I love lizards so this wasn’t a concern for me, but I imagine people without a reptile obsession might be worried about safety on Komodo Island. I get it. Even with a tour guide and his super protective stick, you’re still walking through an island literally crawling with strong, venomous reptiles.

I see how this could be a little too adventurous for some, but the whole time I was on Komodo I felt safe. The dragons are clearly used to seeing people from time to time, and while they aren’t handled or fed by the park staff, they have learned to tolerate and happily ignore us.

Exploring the Komodo Island Pink Beach

I remember seeing the Komodo Island Pink Beach in pictures and wondering how pink it would really be. I’ve been to “black sand” beaches that were underwhelmingly gray and “white sand” beaches that were closer to beige, but Pink Beach surprised me.

Although faint, there was a clear pink tint to the sand at the waterline, caused by eroded red coral pieces mixing with the sand.

When standing in the water close to the shore, you can see stripes of dark blue, turquoise, and light blue water, followed by lines of pink and white sand. The pink beach practically begs to be in your Instagram feed and we couldn’t refuse.

We spent the afternoon lying in the pink sand and snapping a million glamorous pictures before enjoying lunch on the boat and traveling to Turtle Bay and the Coral Garden.

Someone on our trip must have cashed in some good karma with the universe because moments after I face-planted into the water at Turtle Bay, I heard someone shout, “Sea turtle!”

He was gliding peacefully near the bottom, probably munching on some turtle food and riding the current. We followed him for a while but eventually lost him because he was camouflaged so well against the coral. 

“There’s so much down there and were so oblivious to it.” My friend said as we dried off in the late afternoon sun. “I wonder if they’re just as oblivious to us.”

Day 3 of the Flores XP Dragon Tour: Dragons, Mantas, and Flying Foxes

Now used to the routine, on day three we were up early for breakfast at pirate beach camp. Since this was our last full day before returning to Labuan Bajo, we packed our bags and said goodbye to our adorable beach huts.

Snorkeling at Batu Bolong

I might have totally missed Batu Bolong if Paul and Fanny hadn’t pointed it out. From the boat, it just looks like a pile of rocks in the sea. I wouldn’t have even thought to take a picture of it. But as I plopped myself into the water with the grace of a hippopotamus–mask askew and snorkel filled with saltwater–I couldn’t believe what I saw beneath the surface.

There’s a reason Batu Bolong is known as one of the world’s top snorkeling spots. I was swimming inside an aquarium exhibit. The coral was so vibrant and close to the surface, making it easy to see. Along the sides of that unremarkable mass of rock, a sprawling reef teemed with life.

Fish were everywhere – colorful, happy, and willing to pose for pictures. The whole time I was in the water, schools of striped beauties surrounded me and swam right up to my mask to say hello. When I swam closer to the coral, I saw frogfish, triggerfish, and even a pufferfish.

I could have stayed there all day, but I’m glad I didn’t miss what came next.

Swimming with Mantas at Manta Point 

We were starting to think we wouldn’t see one today. We sat perched at the edge of our boat for what felt like hours, eyes squinting in the sun, scanning below the surface for any large, dark shapes. Though frequent in this area, they are still rare creatures.

I caused a false alarm, jumping up and down and shouting, “I see one! I see one!” Everyone threw on their snorkels in a frenzy and prepared to leap from the bow when Paul kindly told me that I’d actually just seen the shadow of the boat.

Fanny saw her first, for real this time. My friends slid into the water like ballerinas, even keeping their hair nice despite the snorkel masks. I managed ungracefully fling myself in, arms flailing, in a wave of utter chaos.

Sure enough, just below our flippers, we saw her. Close in width to a queen-size mattress, she was gently gliding along the current without a care in the world.

We followed her as long as we could, watching her fins softly flap like a bird in slow motion. She seemed oblivious to our presence. She was gorgeous–a creature from another world.

Eventually, she outswam us, and we surfaced for the first time. Thirty minutes had passed, but we didn’t notice. None of us needed to say anything. We had just shared one of the most amazing encounters a person can have with nature.

In preparation for the trip, my excitement for seeing Komodo dragons eclipsed everything else. I didn’t realize we would be in an area with mantas, so seeing her was a totally unexpected and spectacular surprise.

Back on the boat, we were completely content with our manta swim-along. I even made a coffee and settled in with my book for a while, assuming we had all the excitement we could handle for the day. But once again, I had no idea what was coming.

The Mawan Manta Cleaning Station

We left Manta Point and headed over to Mawan – home to a reef well-known as a manta cleaning station. Mantas come here to swim around while little reef fish eat the grime and parasites off of them.

With my flippers tangled together, I tripped into the water. When the bubbles cleared, I saw two mantas getting a fish bath just a few feet away. These mantas certainly weren’t oblivious to us. They were almost playing with us, swimming in slow circles while the reef fish frantically cleaned.

I dove down deep right as the larger of the two mantas turned to face me. We looked at each other for a minute, me staring at its strange “u” shaped mouth and it, no doubt, wondering what kind of odd goggle-eyed creature I was.

Rinca Island Tour to find more Komodo dragons

Our Rinca Island tour was more rigorous than the trek on Komodo Island due to our midday arrival. Shade was scarce and temperatures were higher – not an ideal situation for dragons or people.

We knew the dragons would be hiding from the heat, but I couldn’t believe what I saw when we walked up to the ranger station. In the shady crawl-space under the rangers’ houses , almost a dozen dragons slept in a heap.

It was comforting knowing that my tour was led by someone who lived with a dog-pile of deadly reptiles in his basement. Nature is unpredictable, but if anyone can keep us safe, it’s him.

We saw a few dragons on our hike, but most of them were hiding from the sun. On our walk back toward the entrance, we spotted a substantial chunk of spinal bone from what was once a buffalo, now a lizard’s lunch. On our way back to the boat, we passed the dragon pile again. They were still enjoying the man-made shade but always kept a lazy eye on us.

As the sun began to set, we sailed to Kalong Island to see the flying foxes. Every night at sunset, these giant bats migrate from their mangrove to the island of Flores.

As if on cue, as the sky turned pink, they flew out of the mangrove by the thousands. They filled the sky like silent confetti and even when the sky seemed completely full, more came.

When the last flying fox made its exit, we cruised back to Labuan Bajo and said our goodbyes. We arrived at our hotels exhausted, a bit sunburned, and overwhelmingly happy.

Why Flores XP Tours is the Best Komodo Island Tour

I’ve done plenty of tours in my travels, but the Komodo Island tour package with Flores XP was by far the best.

They offer a good balance of adventure and relaxation.

The itinerary was filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but the guides still allotted time for rest and relaxation. Camping on pirate beach camp was wonderful.

The accommodation on our private beach was rustic but extremely comfortable. I loved our open-air huts and it was amazing to sleep in a real bed. Pirate Beach camp had:

• A private beach with hammocks, beach loungers, and a beautiful sunset
• A restaurant with a bar and WiFi
• Western flush toilets and a clean bathroom
• Fresh-water showers
• Power outlets
• Solar Power

We had an excellent, well-organized staff.

Our staff was confident, capable, and a ton of fun. We were always given a briefing of what each day would include and had a boat map so we always knew where we were.

This tour works hard to be Eco-Friendly.

Flores XP makes a considerable effort to be eco-friendly. It’s one thing to see these awesome animals and walk and swim alongside them. It’s even better to do it with a company that actually cares about protecting the habitats these creatures depend on.

We were issued reusable water bottles and never used plastic products for meals. The pirate base camp was fully solar-powered, and there were solar panels on top of the boat, as well.

The Best Komodo Tour In Flores, Indonesia. How To See Komodo Dragons.

When you decide to visit Flores you need to organize a komodo tour. In fact, 2 of them. In this article, we will explain what is the best komodo tour to see komodo dragons . It will include the famous pink beach, Komodo National Park and incredible views from Padar Island . You will see why we included Flores into our ultimate 2 week itinerary for Indonesia.

Apart from relaxing in Bali or on the Gili Islands , Flores is definitely worth a visit. If you want to see very unique animals, amazing landscapes or spend a few hours on a deserted island, you will need to go there.

WHERE CAN YOU TAKE A KOMODO TOUR?

You will need to fly to Labuan Bajo (pronounced Labuan Badzo) in the west of Flores. We flew from Bali and it was a 1-hour flight. The airline was called NamAir and it was only $90 return per person. Make sure to get a window seat. Flying over Indonesia is an amazing experience.

From the airport, it takes only 15 minutes to get to the city and we paid 50.000 RP for the taxi (3€). The “city” is very small. It has an industrial harbor, a few restaurants and hotels, a lot of dive shops, and tourist offices. It is a very basic tourist town. Plenty of options for you to book a komodo tour in order to get to the islands around the west coast of Flores.

KOMODO TOUR 1: EXPLORE RINCA ISLAND

The first tour we took was to Rinca Island, where you can see komodo dragons, with a stop on Kelor Island and Bidadari Island. 

Have you ever heard of Komodo dragons ? Well, there are only a few places where you can find them. And, Indonesia is the only country where they live.

HOW TO BOOK YOUR KOMODO TOUR

There are millions of tourist offices in Labuan Bajo. So you don’t have to worry about pre-booking a tour on the internet, it is usually more expensive anyway.

We booked our tour in the tourist information office ( easily found on Google Maps ) . Lonely Planet gave them a good review so we thought it is a good idea to go there. And, it was a great idea. The service was outstanding and Emanuel, who organized everything for us, was incredibly helpful.

One of the best tours of all time . We decided to book a private boat as it gave us more flexibility. We choose to see Rinca Island first as many travelers have seen most of the dragons on Rinca Island. You are almost guaranteed to see some there.

HOW MUCH DOES THE KOMODO TOUR TO RINCA ISLAND COST?

The private boat to Rinca cost us 1.5 mil RP (100€), including snorkeling gear, lunch box, and water. It is a 2 hours boat ride from Labuan Bajo. The tour included 2 more islands which we could pick on our own. But Emanuel advised us to see Kelor and Bidadari Islands . A very good choice. 

FIRST STOP ON OUR TOUR: RINCA ISLAND

We got to our boat around 7 am and captain Jack (really) and his assistant Johannes were waiting for us with a big smile. We introduced ourselves and headed to our first stop: Rinca Island , to see the Komodo dragons . The boat is a typical Indonesian boat and it is a very, very loud one. The engine makes so much noise, that when we were on the beach or in the city, we really thought that helicopters are in the air.

Once you arrive in Rinca, you will walk to the place where they sell tickets and where you will need to take a local guide. You cannot walk on your own, as it is dangerous. Dragons can attack you , and that’s why your guide will have a stick to protect you.

HOW MUCH ARE THE TICKETS TO THE NATIONAL PARK?

It is difficult to say how much the tickets are, as prices seem to differ for each traveler. We paid 300.000 RP per person. This includes tickets to the park, 80.000 RP fee for the guide, fees for taking pictures, an additional fee to make videos and more. Overall, just lots of different fees. Luckily, there is no fee for breathing there.

We read some of the reviews and also met a few people and all of them paid different prices. What I really didn’t like about Indonesia is that there are very rarely prices displayed, and you never know how much things cost. It seems like that tourist officers can ask for any price, depending on their mood, or whatever price comes to their minds first. That was the same in grocery stores and practically everywhere else.

SEEING KOMODO DRAGONS

Captain Jack told us that we can spend 1.5 hours on Rinca Island. So, I didn’t want to spend our precious time arguing with the ticketing officer. Our guide armed with a wooden stick was very knowledgeable and explained to us everything about the komodo dragons . We walked a bit further from the ticket office and headed to the kitchen. And here they were 🙂 5 huge dragons lying on the ground.

They are attracted by the smell of the kitchen and that’s why they like to hang around there. They seemed a bit drowsy, but the guide explained that they are just pretending to sleep. Dragons are very patient animals and waiting for their victims to be distracted and then attack.

Very important: Do not walk away from your guide. You are really safe and he knows where to go and he is there to protect you. There were few people who walked away from their guides to take a selfie or picture and were attacked by dragons.

On this island, you will also see other animals like bulls and monkeys: Komodo dragons’ favorite dishes. After a detailed tour and seeing several dragons we had this beautiful view from Rinca Island.

SECOND STOP: KELOR ISLAND

After 45 minutes on the “helicopter boat” we arrived at our second stop. It was a very small and deserted island with a white sand beach and perfect turquoise waters, called: Kelor Island . As we had only around 1 hour, we wanted to climb up to the hill for the view. It is not very easy to climb up as it is steep and just a dirty, dusty path but we didn’t mind. The view was so amazing and it reminded us of the stunning Karimunjawa Islands . You can also snorkel here and enjoy the warm water of the Java Sea.

THIRD STOP: SECRET PINK BEACH BIDADARI ISLAND

Can you imagine that there is a secret pink beach ? Yes it is and it is located at Bidadari Beach was the last stop on our komodo tour. After the first stops, we were so happy and overwhelmed that we were sure that it couldn’t get any better. But there it was, our last stop, a pink beach.

To be precise, a pink sand beach and barely tourists. It was definitely the cherry on top. You can see so many tropical fish, just 2 meters away from the shore. Snorkeling is truly amazing in Flores.

We do highly recommend to take this komodo tour , and especially to take a private boat. We enjoyed it a lot, the fact that we were alone, without waiting for others was really pleasant. Besides, to see dragons and the beautiful islands made our day unforgettable.

KOMODO TOUR 2: VSIT FAMOUS PADAR ISLAND AND KOMODO NATIONAL PARK

Be Aware: There are news that Komodo National Park will be temporarily shut down for tourists. Allegedly over 40 Komodo Dragons were stolen and sold on the black market. We are not 100% sure as there are many conflicting stories. So please make sure to check that before you visit. However, even without the Komodo dragons there is plenty of other exciting places to see in Flores. (last edited: May 2019)

The second tour which is definitely worth to visit is to go to Komodo National Park with a stop at Padar Island and snorkeling with manta rays. We decided not to take a private boat and we paid 450.000 RP together for a full-day tour.

Padar island was our first stop and it takes 3 hours to get ther e. You will have around 1 hour to climb up to the viewpoint and come back to the boat. Padar Island is a very special island. Why? From the top of the island, you can see 3 beaches with differently colored sand: pink, white and black.

SECOND STOP: KOMODO NATIONAL PARK

Komodo National Park  is one of the most famous parks to see komodo dragons. It has the same system as Rinca Island. That means you need to buy an entrance fee which varies from 250.000 to 350.000 RP and you need to have a  guide  to walk around the island. In 1991 the national park was declared a  Unesco World Heritage Site.

THIRD STOP: SNORKELLING WITH MANTA RAYS

On the way back to Labuan Bajo we snorkeled with manta rays which was an unforgettable experience. Not to mention a beautiful sunset.

OUR TIP: If you are into scuba diving, then Flores is the perfect place for you. The Java Sea is full of great corals, manta rays and of course other tropical fish. You can do a discovery dive and also get your open water certificate.  If you would like to get your open water certificate read HERE to find the perfect place to get certified.

You can also go for boat trip and spend a night on board a traditional Phinisi boat which is definitely something we would like to do next time we visit Flores. You can also have a look at this blog which describes sailing around Flores.

ABOUT KOMODO DRAGONS

Also known as Komodo monitor they are the largest species of lizards and can be found on the Indonesian islands: Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Padar and Gila Motang. They have been on the planet for over a million years and unfortunately face extinction today. However, the national parks are doing a great job of protecting them. Komodo dragons are also the heaviest lizards on Earth. They have long, flat heads with rounded snouts, scaly skin, bowed legs, and huge tails. They can grow up to 3 meters and weigh up to 80 kilos, male dragons even up to 100 kilos.

WHY KOMODO DRAGONS ARE DANGEROUS?

Their saliva with 50 strains of bacteria is very poisonous and a stricken animal usually dies off blood poisoning within 24 hours. Komodo dragons are truly the kings on the island and dominate their ecosystem. They literally will eat anything but only meat, so basically all types of invertebrates, birds, mammals, including huge buffaloes and, yes, humans. They can run up to 18 km per hour in very short bursts. So you really don’t want to mess with them 😀 We saw in total 7 Komodo dragons.

WHERE TO STAY IN LABUAN BAJO

We stayed in a cute hotel called Le Pirate which is right in the heart of the town, only 10 minutes away from the airport. They have super cute rooms, also a restaurant & bar, a rooftop sky bar with live music, an outdoor cinema and a plunge pool.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT FLORES?

The best time to visit Flores is during the dry season which starts in April and ends in September .

We would recommend you to book a tour once you are in Labuan Bajo. This is to avoid extra costs for booking fees and like this you can talk to tour operators beforehand what you actually want to see 🙂 We wouldn’t book in advance, but if you like to have more secure travels you can book in advance. However we feel like that tours which are booked online are usually more expensive.

Flores also is world tourist destination to see the nature, culture, tradition and so much more. Flores island is a good place to visit in Indonesia. To do a tour on Flores island, traveler should use a car both start from east or west part. Overland trip is the best way to see a lot of destination along the island of Flores.

If you want to do a tour Flores island together with Komodo National Park, here we recommend to begin from east part of Flores Island. While if you only to see the Komodo Dragons on Komodo National Park, so you should fly to west part of Flores Island. Flores has seven airport that spread out from eastern to the western part of the island. But the major airport is Komodo airport of Labuan Bajo in the west, Ende airport in the middle and Maumere airport in the east. Those airport you can connect the flight.

Boat trip to Komodo National Park from Labuan Bajo town

Boat is the only transport to visit the islands of Komodo national park in Indonesia. All the boat trip started from the town of Labuan Bajo in the western part of Flores island. Labuan Bajo town is the only place to visit the islands of Komodo national park. Since few year ago, Labuanbajo town become a super premium destination. Here is the center of Flores Komodo tourism activities.

There is not public boat to take for travelers to visit the islands of Komodo national park . You only use private boat whenever to visit the island. Travelers needed to book a boat before arrival. There are several classes of the boat. Deck, cabin AC and cabin AC with private bathroom are classes of the boat you can choose.

Entrance fee for the island of Komodo, Padar and surrounding area Rupiah 3,750,000 per person

This is to inform you that not all islands in Komodo National Park apply the same entry fee. Komodo Island, Padar and some places or spots are paid at IDR 3,750,000 per person with only 200,000 visitors allowed in per year. If you want to visit Komodo Island, Padar and the surrounding area, you have to pay the entrance fee above with an online payment system. If in a year there are already 200,000 confirmed visitors, they will be directed to visit the following year. The rule for limiting visits to Komodo, Padar and surrounding islands will take effect from January 2023. Visitors are allowed only 200,000 peoples for a year.

Rinca the only island to visit for public

Rinca is second largest island of Komodo national park. Here is the best place to see the Komodo Dragons, wildlife, birds and more. The only place is opening for public visitors without limited visitors every year. The island of Rinca is a destination that can be visited by the public with no restrictions on the number of visitors per year. The entrance fee is relatively cheap where visitors pay IDR 550,000 per person. The price does not include the ranger fee. That’s why we sell almost all Komodo National Park tour packages to Rinca Island and other islands which are not limited by the number of visitors per year.

We have some classes of the boat for tours to Komodo. It’s depending on size and supporting facilities. In general the boat trip to Komodo divided two kinds. First is deck boat. Deck boat is the boat without cabin or room. While cabin boat is the boat designed with cabin or room. Normally deck boat is using when you choose Komodo daily trip. While cabin boat is using as long as you stay on the boat along or a part of the trip.

This time all our cabin boat is using air condition. Now we don’t use a boat with fan again on Komodo trip. All boat we use for Komodo tour based air conditioned. Whiles deck boat is using as long as you choose to stay at hotel in the town of Labuan Bajo.

Where to stay in labuan bajo.

The recommended accommodation in the top segment (especially for families or for a peaceful stay) is Villa Domanik . While on a walking distance from the city centre, this peaceful resort is far from the city buzz and is located on a hill facing mountains and the sea.

Recommended accommodations in the mid-budget segment are Seaesta Komodo Hostel & Hotel and Wae Molas Hotel , while in the low-budget segment we recommend Ciao Hostel .

How to get to Labuan Bajo?

The gateway to Flores is Bali . There are frequent flights from Denpassar (Bali) to Labuan Bajo and it takes ± 1 hour. You can book both your international flight to Bali as well as domestic flights Labuan Bajo via Skyscanner . Since recently, there are also direct flights to Labuan Bajo from Makassar , Sulawesi! Consider booking a window seat to enjoy the beautiful view when approaching Flores.

An adventurous way to get to Labuan Bajo from Gili island is by boat, and the standard boat tour takes 4 Days. We only recommend this option for low budget travellers that have plenty of time, because the facilities onboard are very basic. Most travellers prefer to fly from Gili to Labuan Bajo via Denpassar (there are no direct flights).

What is the entrance fee to Komodo National Park?

According to the default itineraries for the 2D, 3D and 4D Komodo Tours, each passenger needs an entrance ticket for 2 days. The reason the entrance fees are excluded from the tour price is that sometimes we need to change the itinerary due to weather conditions and we do not want to overcharge you unnecessarily beforehand.

The extra price for the entrance fees for the 3D2N Komodo Tour is 620.000 IDR per person for regular days (in total for the entire tour), and 750.000 IDR per person for national holidays.

Do children get a discount for the Komodo Tour?

Yes, discounts apply for children of 5 years and younger:

• Children of 1 year and younger don't pay anything for the entire Komodo Tour.
• Children of 5 years and younger get a free entrance to the National Park.

What are the safety measures on board?

Safety is the number one priority with the livaboard Komodo Tours.

We tailor the tour itinerary to the weather/sea conditions . In case these conditions at some sites are too wild according to the captain, we visit the site on a different time/day or skip it and visit other sites instead.There are life jackets on board for all passengers.There is radio communication on board.

Is the Komodo tour safe for children?

While it is common that visitors do the tour with infants, we recommend to be cautious with children under 3 years if you have no experience with boat trips together with your young children.

Bigger children usually love the Komodo tour. However, because kids are usually more sensitive to the heat, we advice to always book a boat with AC (as is the case with the boats we use).

Does the crew speak English?

We only work with English speaking, licensed guides that will join you throughout the tour. The cook and captain on board usually don't speak English well.

Do I share the boat with other visitors?

No. All our tours are private which means that you are the only ones on board together with your own private staff. Therefore the itineraries are not set in stone and we happily accommodate your wishes in a tailored itinerary.

When does the tour start/end?

Because of the private nature of our tours, we will start the tour whenever you arrive in Labuan Bajo or whenever you wish to be picked up from your accommodation in Labuan Bajo, as long as it is before noon.

The tour end is also flexible. The tour usually ends around noon, but we can stretch it in case you have a late flight or drop you of earlier at the airport in case you have an early flight.

What's the best period to visit Komodo National Park?

The weather is usually best and the sea is most calm from the beginning of May to the end of October.

Between November and March - and especially in December and January - the weather can sometimes be in bad conditions. We have a zero-risk policy and therefore the itinerary may be adjusted based on the weather.

However, these winter months are the best period for seeing large groups of Manta Rays. The emphasis is on "large groups", as individual Manta Rays can usually be seen throughout the year.

What is the payment process?

A small online pre-payment is required to confirm your booking request. The outstanding amount is usually paid in cash upon arrival. Alternatively - and only if you wish - the outstanding balance can be transferred in advance to our guide's Indonesian bank account.

In case you wish to pay the outstanding balance in advance, we recommend using TransferWise .

Komodo Tour Itineraries

Itineraries – flores – komodo tours, 2d1n komodo island tour, day 1: labuan bajo >> kelor island – rinca island – kalong island (l d).

Pick up at the airport or hotel in the early morning, and drop off at the harbor where you will enter the boat and meet the staff. We start sailing around 8 am towards Kelor island. Here, you can snorkel and have short hike to enjoy the beautiful panorama from the top of the hill.

Then you're served delicious lunch on the boat. We cruise to Rinca island to meet the dragons, and other wildlife such as buffaloes, deers, monkeys, and wild boars! A ranger will accompany us on a 1.5 hour trek, during which we will also go up hill and enjoy the panorama view.

Then, we head to the last destination of the day, Kalong Island, and enjoy thousands of bats fly around our heads as the sun sets.

DAY 2: Padar Island – Pink Beach - Kanawa Island >> Labuan Bajo (B L)

Enjoy the delightful breakfast on the boat and prepare for a 30 minute trek up hill to the top of Padar Island. This may be the absolute highlight of the day as the view is totally breathtaking!

Then we continue to Pink Beach, one of favourite snorkelling spots during the trip. And yes, the beach is pink, so bring your camera with you! We'll have lunch at this exotic destination.

Finally, we visit Kanawa island, where we can swim, snorkel or relax on the picturesque, white beach. Then it is time to sail back to Labuan Bajo, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.

3D2N Komodo Island Tour

We have a traditional Indonesian diner on board, and then prepare for the night.

DAY 2: Padar Island – Komodo Island – Pink Beach (B L D)

In the afternoon we sail to Komodo island, and a ranger accompanies us on a trek to spot the famous Komodo dragons. They are a bit bigger here than they are in Rinca island.

DAY 3: Taka Makasar – Manta Point – Sebayur Island >> Labuan Bajo (B L)

We continue to Sebayur island, where you can enjoy for the last time the beautiful underwater scene. Then it is time to sail back to Labuan Bajo, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.

4D3N Komodo Island Tour

Day 3: taka makasar – manta point – gili lawa island >> labuan bajo (b l).

The next destination is Gili Lawa Island, where we will have trek to a hill top and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

DAY 4: Siaba Island – Kanawa Island >> Labuan Bajo (B L)

After breakfast we head to Siaba island. Having one of the best snorkelling sites in the area, you may spot turtles here.

We continue to Kanawa island, where we can swim, snorkel or relax on the picturesque, white beach.

If time allows, we visit after lunch another snorkelling site Bidari, before sailing back to Labuan Bajo. Drop off at your hotel or the airport.

2D1N Kelimutu Tour

Day 1: ende airport > wologai - waterfall > moni.

Pick-up is upon arrival at Ende aiport. Transfer to the traditional Lionese village Wologai , where we will walk through as we learn about the customs and traditions of the local life. We continue to Moni, and underway we make a stop to swim or relax at the waterfalls . Finally, we check-in to our hotel in Moni .

DAY 2: MONI – KELIMUTU LAKE – MONI > ENDE/MAUMERE

We start the trip at 4 am and drive for an hour for the starting point of the mountain trek. The hike to the top of Mt Kelimutu takes about 45 minutes. Here we will witness a beautiful sunrise , relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the Kelimutu lake .

We drive back to the hotel for breakfast, and then we continue either to Ende or Maumere , depending on where you are flying from. If you fly from Ende, we will drive you directly to Ende; if you fly from Maumere, we will drive to Maumere and make stops at Koka Beach, Old church and Waring traditional village.

2D1N Wae Rebo Tour

Day 1: labuan bajo – denge – wae rebo.

Pick-up early in the morning at your hotel in Labuan Bajo (or at the airport if you arrive before 9 am), and private transfer to Denge village (±5 hours). Here we start the trek to Wae Rebo Village (3-4 hours depending on your wishes), which is a remote village that can only be reached by foot. We explore the traditional houses at Wae Rebo village and meet the kind locals. Both dinner and overnight are at a traditional house.

DAY 2: WAE REBO – DENGE – SPIDER WEB RICE FIELD – LEMBOR – LABUAN BAJO

After breakfast, we hike to Denge village from where we’ll continue the journey by car to Cara village (± 2.5 hours) to see the Spider Web Rice Field . Then we visit other rice fields in Lembor before we arrive in Labuan Bajo.

3D2N Wae Rebo Tour

Day 1: labuan bajo – todo – denge.

Pick-up at your hotel in Labuan Bajo (or at the airport if you arrive before 9 am). We drive through Melo village where we’ll see a beautiful panorama of Labuan Bajo, and then continue to Lembor to see the rice terrace fields. Finally, we drive 3 hours to Denge village where we’ll stay overnight at a local homestay.

DAY 2: DENGE – WAE REBO

After breakfast we start the trek to Wae Rebo Village (3-4 hours depending on your wishes), which is a remote village that can only be reached by foot. We explore the traditional houses at Wae Rebo village and meet the kind locals. Both dinner and overnight are at a traditional house .

DAY 3: WAE REBO – DENGE – SPIDER WEB RICE FIELD – LEMBOR – LABUAN BAJO

4d3n flores overland tour, day 1: labuan bajo – ruteng.

Pickup at your hotel in Labuan Bajo around 8 am (or at the airport as long as you land before 9 am). As we drive towards Ruteng, we make stops at Melo village for a panorama of Labuan Bajo, at Lembor to see a large rice terrace and at Cara Village to see the beautiful Spire Web Rice Terrace Field. In Ruteng we stop at Ruteng Pu’u to visit the traditional houses of the Manggarai tribe, before we check-in at our hotel.

DAY 2: RUTENG - BAJAWA

After breakfast we continue the tour with the first top at Tepo Rakot, where we can enjoy a panorama of the rice terrace. Next we visit the Rana Mese Lake in the rain forest, and then visit Aimere village and learn about the process of making palm wine. The next village Bena is located in the slope of Mount Inerie and is the traditional village of Bajawa people. In the afternoon, we will relax in the Hot Spring at So’a. Then we check-in at the hotel in Bajawa.

DAY 3: BAJAWA - MONI

We continue the journey after breakfast and drive to the hot spring where we can swim and relax. The next stop is at Nanga Penda, where walk along the Blue Stone Beach [picture] and where we have lunch. We continue towards Ende and stop at the Museum of Bung Karno and visit the traditional villages in Saga [picture] and Wolo Gai [picture]. Finally, we arrive in Moni where we stay overnight in a hotel.

DAY 4: MONI – KELIMUTU – MAUMERE

We start the trip at 4 am and drive for an hour for the starting point of the mountain trek. The hike to the top of Mt Kelimutu takes about 45 minutes.

Here we will witness a beautiful sunrise, relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the Kelimutu lake. We drive back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out, and then we continue either to Ende or Maumere, depending on where you are flying from. If you fly from Ende, we will drive you directly to Ende; if you fly from Maumere, we will drive to Maumere and make stops at Koka Beach, Old church and Waring traditional village.

5D4N Flores Overland Tour

Day 2: wae rebo – ruteng.

After breakfast, we hike to Denge village from where we’ll continue the journey by car to Cara Village to see the Spider Web Rice Field . Then we continue to Ruteng Town and stay overnight in a hotel.

DAY 3: RUTENG - BAJAWA

Day 4: bajawa - moni.

We continue the journey after breakfast and drive to the hot spring where we can swim and relax. The next stop is at Nanga Penda, where walk along the Blue Stone Beach and where we have lunch. We continue towards Ende and stop at the Museum of Bung Karno and visit the traditional villages in Saga and Wolo Gai. Finally, we arrive in Moni where we stay overnight in a hotel.

DAY 5: MONI – KELIMUTU – ENDE/MAUMERE

Here we will witness a beautiful sunrise , relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the Kelimutu crater lake . We drive back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out, and then we continue either to Ende or Maumere , depending on where you are flying from. If you fly from Ende, we will drive you directly to Ende; if you fly from Maumere, we make stops at Koka Beach, Old church and/or Waring traditional village.
