15 people injured when tram collides with guardrail at Universal Studios theme park near Los Angeles

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — More than a dozen people suffered mostly minor injuries when a tram used for tours crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, authorities and the company said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the theme park in Universal City, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA, the agency said in a social media post.

The California Highway Patrol said that while the tram was negotiating a turn, its last car collided with a metal guardrail, “causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers.”

The fire department said 15 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The highway patrol’s statement on Sunday said some of the injuries were moderate, but didn’t specify a number.

Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement Sunday afternoon that tours have resumed with a modified route.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority,” the statement said.

The highway patrol, which is leading the investigation, said alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor.

The tram circuit, called the World-Famous Studio Tour, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Universal movies including “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tour starting Friday.

A family recalls the fear they felt when the studio tram they were riding in crashed at Universal Studios Hollywood, leaving 15 people injured.

Since the incident, the Murrieta family claims park officials have downplayed the severity of the crash and the victims’ injuries.

“He indicated it was incredibly dark at the scene,” said Steven Dhillon, the family’s attorney. “Many victims were holding up their flashlights, trying to locate other victims, everybody was screaming. It was mass hysteria.”

Emergency crews responded to the park on April 20 just after 9 p.m., after reports of a crash taking place during the studio backlot tour attraction.

The tram was passing the Jurassic Park exhibit when, while making a left turn, the last tram car struck a metal guardrail on the right-hand side, according to California Highway Patrol.

The maneuver tilted the vehicle, causing passengers to fall out and onto the road. Emergency crews transported 15 people to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

One family visiting from Murrieta was injured in the crash, including 11-year-old Sophia who was celebrating her birthday at the theme park. 

Sophia was ejected from the tram and her father suffered leg, back and shoulder injuries. The girl’s mother, however, was the most injured in the family.

“She was propelled so violently into the plexiglass wall in front of her,” Dhillon said. “It impacted her brain so much that it started to bleed. She’s been experiencing headaches, nausea, vomiting, disorientation. The list goes on and on.”

All three injured family members were treated at a local hospital and later released.

Universal Studios released a statement after the crash saying, “We are thankful that, based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor.”

However, Dhillon believes the tram was traveling unusually fast that night and that the windows and walls of the tram were not strong enough to protect riders.

“The guard walls that come down on the tram were so weak that they gave out and allowed the individuals to be hurled outside of the tram,” Dhillon said. “This was by no means a minor accident with minor injuries. You don’t transport a dozen individuals to the hospital for minor injuries.”

Although the family said they do not plan to sue Universal Studios, they are hoping park officials will “step up and do the right thing.”

The studio trams can hold over 100 people and typically travel at low speeds. It’s unclear how many people were on board when the collision occurred.

The Studio Tour remains one of the theme park’s most popular attractions, taking riders on a one-hour backlot tour of some of the most iconic film and television sets in Hollywood history.

Throughout the tour, guests experience several interactive elements including animatronics, 3-D motion, sound stages with special effects, and more.

The attraction is celebrating its 60th Anniversary celebration this year after debuting in 1964.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not considered factors. Officials with the California Highway Patrol will be leading the investigation.

A tram crashed at Universal Studios Hollywood and left more than a dozen people injured, including an 11-year-old girl. That family’s attorney is now speaking on their behalf.

The backlot tour at the California theme park is one of the most popular attractions on the property. Guests who go on the tour will experience behind-the-scenes elements, such as animatronics, sound stages, special effects, and more.

On Saturday, April 20, one of the backlot trams crashed into a metal guardrail, ejecting multiple people from the vehicle. Fifteen passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Universal Studios Backlot Tram Crashes Into Metal Guardrail

The Murrieta family was aboard the tram that crashed last weekend, and they claim park officials are not being honest about how bad the crash was. 

“There was a tram incident at the theme park tonight that resulted in multiple minor injuries, confirmed by the LA County Fire Dept,” a Universal Studios spokesperson told KTLA at the time of the crash. “We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.”

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, but authorities have ruled out the involvement of alcohol and drugs.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," Universal Hollywood said in another statement, per AP News . "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority."

11-Year-Old Girl ‘Propelled’ From Universal Studios Backlot Tram

The Murrieta family’s attorney is speaking on their behalf.

According to KTLA, the California Highway Patrol, the backlot tram was passing the Jurassic Park exhibit when the last tram car hit a metal guardrail. Several people were injured as they fell out and onto the road. 15 people were transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

One of those injured in the accident was 11-year-old Sophia, who was ejected from the tram. “She was propelled so violently into the plexiglass wall in front of her,” Dhillon said. “It impacted her brain so much that it started to bleed. She’s been experiencing headaches, nausea, vomiting, disorientation. The list goes on and on.”

Sophia’s father also sustained injuries to his leg, back and shoulder. Her mom was also severely injured.

Universal Studios Hollywood Releases Statement

While Universal Studios claims they “are thankful that, based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor,” the Murrieta family’s attorney says otherwise. 

“The guard walls that come down on the tram were so weak that they gave out and allowed the individuals to be hurled outside of the tram,” Dhillon said. “This was by no means a minor accident with minor injuries. You don’t transport a dozen individuals to the hospital for minor injuries.”

The family does not plan to sue Universal Studios, but they hope officials will “step up and do the right thing.”

When the backlot tour crash occurred, the park was prepping for its 60th anniversary celebration of the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, which kicked off Friday, April 26. 

“Don’t miss the all-new experience that lets you step off the classic tram and onto the studio backlot for a limited time,” Universal Hollywood said. “Explore an iconic film set, take part in immersive photo-ops, experience tour enhancements, and enjoy new themed food with collectible merchandise.”

Universal Studios tram riders were seriously injured in crash, lawyer says

A passenger on a Universal Studios tram car that crashed into a guardrail on Saturday estimates the ride reached speeds up to 20 to 25 mph after the driver apparently lost control of the tram, which is much faster than the usual slow pace of the attraction, according to the man's attorney.

Fifteen passengers aboard the tram received "minor to moderate injuries" after the ride crashed shortly after 9 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said in a report. The linked tram cars had passed by a set of props from the "Jurassic Park" film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M, and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to "tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram," authorities said in the report.

Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the tram ride — remain unclear, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

Attorney Steven Dhillon, who represents two adults and an 11-year-old girl injured in the crash, said that one of his adult clients sustained a brain injury after her head hit a metal or plexiglass frame on the tram car.

"She woke up sick with nausea and was vomiting the next morning," Dhillon said by phone.

After she went to the hospital the following morning, she was told there was bleeding in her brain, according to Dhillon, who did not make his clients available to The Times to discuss their injuries or disclose their names.

Another Dhillon client in the last tram car said that it appeared the driver lost control while going downhill, allowing the tram to accelerate rapidly as the passengers screamed, the attorney said. The guest said the crash exacerbated pain from previous knee and spine surgeries, according to Dhillon, who did not disclose his client's age.

On Saturday, Lt. Maria Abal with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said there appeared to be an issue with the tram's brakes. While the Sheriff's Department responded to the scene of the crash, the CHP is the lead agency in the investigation, a Universal Studios spokesperson said. The CHP has not released the findings of its investigation.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," Universal Studios said in a statement.

The theme park said it was working closely with authorities as it continues its own review of the incident, adding that "safety remains a top priority."

While the initial reports of injuries appeared minimal, the long-lasting effects of the crash will likely continue to develop over the next several months, Dhillon said. He is currently discussing the situation with Universal Studios.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios did not respond to requests for comment on Dhillon's claims.

The Studio Tour tram ride will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its "operational and safety protocols."

In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.

Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the bloodthirsty star of the movie "Jaws," a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic "Psycho" and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film "War of the Worlds" and a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele's 2022 movie "Nope."

The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the backlot movie sets and props.

The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a 2½-hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real-life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.

The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.

This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween "Fright Nights” show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff's Department said at the time.

While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams. But the stunt went wrong when Rebalde jumped and became trapped between the third and fourth sections of one four-section tram, was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded "Halloween Horror Nights."

More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the "Waterworld" show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show's finale. The "Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular" show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie's debut.

The tram network has been expanding since 1875 and nowadays encompasses 15 lines and approximately 200 km of rail lines.

Tips for passengers & sightseeing by tram

• Since 2018 cash purchases of tickets onboard the tram are no longer possible . You will find more info under “Which ticket option is best for me?” (see below). It is worth it to research tickets for mass transit ahead of time. That saves time and money later.
• A not-so-secret-anymore tip is the tram line number 2. It is popular with sightseeing tourist s, as many of its stops are nearby attractions. This line will get you to the flower market, Royal Palace on the dam, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Stedelijk museum for example and passing through all the canals of Amsterdam’s famous Canal Belt.
• Getting on and off: You may only enter the tram at the front door by the driver or at the double doors at the back. The other doors are for exit only. After entering the tram, you have to validate your ticket on the checking device. A valid ticket is also required to exit.
• The streetcar is often used by tourists. In contrast to the underground metro, you can also discover the city during the journey. Thanks to the dense network of lines, many sightseeing highlights and museums can be reached by streetcar.

Tickets for the public transport system in Amsterdam: Which ticket option is best for me?

Whether single ride via e-purse, also referred to as OV-card, all-day ticket, “I Amsterdam Card”, or “Amsterdam Travel Card”, you will find detailed information for all, as well as current fares here.

It allows you to quickly and easily find the right ticket option for your stay in Amsterdam. Researching all options upfront and knowing which ticket option works best for you, will save you money and time after arrival and prevent stressful situations.

Our advice – when you don’t want to deal with the tariff system and ticket machines:

The single-day or multi-day tickets that are available for the public transport system in Amsterdam are typically the best choices for visitors.

These tickets allow unlimited use of the Metro (subway), GVB bus system, trams, as well as ferries for the entire period of validity (1 – 7 days).

These tickets are rather inexpensive for a European metropolitan city. For 2024 fares range between €5.85 and €9 a day, depending on period of validity

You can purchase these tickets online before your trip without additional fees via the English-language website of the authorised GVB ticket seller – click here – . You will not have to deal with ticket machines or the tariff system upon your arrival.

That saves time and nerves – after all, you will have better things to do in Amsterdam…

A few words about the history of the streetcar in amsterdam.

Amsterdam’s first horse streetcar was opened in 1875. Today, the city’s public transport company GVB operates the streetcar.

The history of streetcars in Amsterdam dates back to the 19th century, when the first horse-drawn streetcars were introduced in the city. The first electric streetcars were then put into operation at the beginning of the 20th century and played an important role in the city’s public transportation system.

Decline and revival

In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a decline in tram use as many people switched to cars. This led to a reduction in the streetcar network, but in the 1980s the city began to modernize and expand the streetcar infrastructure.

How much does a tram ticket cost in Amsterdam 2024?

There is no classic single ticket for Amsterdam public transport. Single journeys can be paid for with the “OV / E-Purse card”. It works in a similar way to a prepaid mobile phone card. You can load an amount of money onto this card at a machine. You can then use this credit to pay for local transport. A reloadable, anonymous e-purse card (without passport photo) costs 7.50 euros (without credit).

It is easier to use local transport with a day or multi-day ticket.

Fakahatchee Ghost Rider Tram Tour

The ‘Ghost Rider’ tram, named in honor of the famous Ghost Orchid found in the Park, allows you look at wildlife and plants without having to watch the road. The 20-passenger tram is wheelchair accessible, and some seats face backwards.

An experienced guide leads each 2 1/2 hour tram tour and points out interesting aspects of the park. The tour takes you past wet prairie where you’ll learn about the underlying geology that shapes the landscape. It stops at a slough to give you a window into the strand. It gives you the opportunity to take a guided 15-minute walk down an old logging path to see numerous air plants, a variety of ferns, and seasonally blooming orchids.

Moonlit Tram Tour

On a Moonlit Fakahatchee Tram Tour you can view the magnificent Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park under the illumination of a full moon. About The Everglades

What are the everglades.

Swamp is a word commonly used to describe the Everglades, but that is not an accurate description. The Everglades is actually a river. It’s a very shallow, slow-moving river that in some places is just inches deep and 50 miles wide. Sometimes called The River of Grass, it forms as water from Lake Okeechobee, which historically overflows the lake’s banks, moves onto the southern Florida plains. The waters then make their way to the Gulf of Mexico at the amazingly slow rate of 2,000 feet per day, or about one mile per 2 ½ days, depending on water depth.

And how slow is that, in comparison to other rivers? Well, at its headwaters in Minnesota, the Mighty Mississippi moves along at about 1.2 Miles Per Hour, which translates to about 152,000 feet per day. When the Mississippi gets to New Orleans, it’s moving about 3 MPH, which comes out to 380,000 feet per day.

The Everglades River is lazy, and its pace creates an ecosystem that’s friendly to about 150 species of trees, 40 species of mammals, hundreds of types of colorful birds, and an array of reptiles and amphibians, including crocodiles and alligators. It’s a unique habitat that you won’t see anywhere else on Earth.

Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park covers approximately 2,357 square miles, making it bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware. It is the third largest park in the lower 48 states, surpassed by only Death Valley and Yellowstone. Everglades National Park was established on December 6, 1947, in an effort to conserve the natural landscape and prevent degradation of not only its land, but also the plants and animals that inhabit the Everglades.

The Park has been designated as an International Biosphere Reserve and a Wetlands of International Significance by the United Nations. So it is not only crucial to the local region and state, but recognized on an international scale.

What to do in Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park isn’t just home to amazing wildlife , it also features plenty of opportunity for fun and excitement during your visit.

Rated among the top attractions in Everglades National Park by Tripadvisor , Shark Valley offers guests numerous ways to explore.

Among guest favorites are the two-hour Everglades tram tours . During your tram ride, you’ll get up close and personal to the amazing Everglade experience. Gråkallbanen: Riding the Trondheim Tram

This is the story of the Trondheim tram, the northernmost tram line in the world.

If you’ve been to Trondheim, you may have seen the white trams that link the city centre with the Lian recreational area. But why is there only one line in the whole city?

To answer that question, we need to look at the history of the Trondheim tram, how it grew to include five lines at its peak, and how it shrivelled down to its current state.

While we're at it, we’ll examine plans to revive the tram system in Trondheim in the future. But first, let's explain why it's well worth a trip.

Why travel with the Trondheim tram?

A trip on the Gråkallbanen tram offers stunning views of the city, as well as affording you the bragging rights associated with riding on the world's northernmost tram.

That title did not always belong to Trondheim. Until 2004 it belonged to the Russian town of Arkhangelsk, which dismantled its tram network that year.

The tram's final stop lies at the border of the Bymarka outdoor area , with its extensive network of hiking and cross-country skiing trails. We recommend the walk around the local lake, Lianvatnet.

The trail is quite easy and well maintained, and it's an accessible way to get a taste of the legendary Norwegian outdoors life. A historic restaurant is also located close to the tram stop, but it sadly shut down in the wake of the pandemic.

Taking the tram in Trondheim

If you ever come to Trondheim and wish to take the tram, it’s as simple as buying a regular bus ticket. These can be purchased via the AtB app, by sms, at certain Coop, Narvesen and 7-Eleven locations, and at ticket machines located at various stops.

At the time of writing, tickets cost NOK 42 for 90 minutes, or NOK 126 for a full day. Persons over 67 years old get a 50% rebate.

Special chartered trams also operate when cruise ships are in town – tickets for those can be purchased through the cruise line’s excursion office – but be prepared to shell out a lot more money for those.

History of the Trondheim tram

The first line of the Trondheim tram opened in 1901, with one line crossing town, linking the Ila area in the West to the Buran area in the East.

With no private cars and few other public transport options, it rose in popularity very quickly and attracted 1.6 million passengers in its first full year of operation.

This result is particularly impressive considering that the city had only about 38,000 inhabitants at the time (as a comparison, the population in 2020 was just above 200,000).

The expansion years

The service grew steadily in the first half of the 20th century, with new lines being established and passenger numbers rising quickly. The first 15 years saw ridership numbers quadruple.

At its peak, the network had five lines. The Lade line , the very first one to be established, was built upon and eventually linked the centre square of town to the Lade area.

The Ila line linked the centre square to a stop close to Ila park. Elgeseter line linked the Dalsenget area (corresponding to today’s Hesthagen bus stop) to the central station.

The Singsaker line linked the Rosenborg area to the Elgeseter line (the connecting point being at Studentersamfundet). Finally, the Gråkall line – the only one that is still operating – links St. Olav’s street, in the centre, to the Lian recreational area.

The beginning of the end

In 1972, the two companies behind Trondheim’s tram lines, Gråkallbanen and Trondheim Sporvei, were merged with municipal bus company Trondheim Trafikkselskap. From then onwards, there was a lot of political pressure for the dismantling of the tram network in favour of the buses. 

After several years of hot debate, the municipality decided to stop all tram service in 1988. The decision was so controversial that the politicians behind it made sure to either strip out or asphalt over most of the network in the days that followed, to make sure the tram was gone for good.

The line between the city centre and Lian was intact though. And two years later, a group of enthusiasts managed to reopen it.

Attempts by the municipality to sell 11 unused trams failed, and the group were allowed to rent them for a symbolic sum. The tram line has been operating ever since and is now an integral part of the city’s public transportation network.

Record passenger numbers

Because it goes through the very popular Byåsen residential area, the tram line has been increasing in popularity over the past few years. Ridership reached new records in 2021 despite the ongoing pandemic.

Expansion plans

The tram has its die-hard fans, and many would like the network to be extended once again even beyond what it was at its golden age. A feasibility study was conducted in 2010, and concluded that ridership numbers would not be sufficient to justify the investment.

Super buses

Based on the study, the city decided to respond to the growing demand for public transportation by revamping its whole bus system and putting new tram-like metro buses into use.

In parallel, the fleet is gradually being replaced with more environmentally-friendly buses, with the number of electric ones increasing steadily.

A zero-growth commitment

The city of Trondheim is constantly expanding, and as part of its strategy to fight global warming, it has committed to a zero-growth strategy for car traffic.

This means that regardless of population increases, car traffic should remain stable in absolute numbers (or even decrease) until 2050.

To reach this objective, the city has to make it more attractive for people to commute by foot, by bike and by public transportation.

This means that a revival of the tram network, even though it has been rejected in 2010, could be on the table at some point in the future.

We rode the tram during our train / bus tour up the east coast of Sweden and down the west coast of Norway in August 2019. We had heard that there was a restaurant at the end of the line. We got that wrong because there was nothing there but a small rail circle and sheep grazing in the middle. So we went back with the same tram. The woman driving the tram was a lovely person who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the tram’s history. So both on the outward and inward bound trips she told us the history of the tramways and pointed out the passing scenery. The tram company could have charged for her guiding services!

We backpacked and stayed at AirBnB homes, except for Stavanger and Bergen where it was cheaper to stay in a hotel. (If you only stay one or two nights in an AirBnB the cleaning fees are so expensive that a hotel can be a better option.)

Actually the tramway in the Russian town of Arkhangelsk was NOT the world’s northernmost. That title goes to Kiruna in Sweden which once has a quite extensive tram network back in the day.
