Ho Chi Minh City TV to organize 'Tour de Vietnam' cycling race next month
Ho Chi Minh City TV will organize an annual national cycling tournament next month, with the largest-ever prize money to be given to riders this year.
The HTV Cup tourney will take place from April 6 to 30, organizers said at a press conference on Thursday.
Cyclists will have to cover 2,350km of the competition’s 22 stages from Cao Bang Province in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south.
The longest stage, about 200km, will be from Nghe An Province to Quang Binh Province in the north-central part of the country.
The rider who wins the most prestigious yellow jersey will be rewarded with VND200 million (US$8,648) while VND50 million ($2,162) each will go to those who wear the blue and polka dot jerseys in the end.
Each lap win will earn a cyclist VND20 million ($865).
The best cycling team will receive VND100 million ($4,324).
The tourney’s prize money totals VND2 billion ($86,480), the largest ever.
Fifteen teams have confirmed their participation in the HTV Cup, including the junior national squad. Each team can register seven riders, according to the tourney’s rules.
Foreign riders will also join this year’s edition.
Spaniard Javier Sardá Pérez, the reigning champion, will ride for team Ho Chi Minh City Vinama, while Frenchman Loïc Desriac will compete for Bike Life Dong Nai.
Ali Khademi, from Iran, will cycle for Gao Hat Ngoc Troi.
Considered Vietnam’s ‘Tour de France,’ HTV Cup has been held annually since 1989.
In its 33rd edition, the tourney is organized every year to celebrate Vietnam's national reunification, which was achieved on April 30, 1975.

Best Selling Vietnam Motorbike Tour to Sapa via Mu Cang Chai from Hanoi
We're a group of 6 Australians guys taking this motorbike trip with this company. It's really an awesome trip in our life. We were arranged all new Honda CRF 250cc & staying at the local families in the Northern Vietnam with the hill tribes. Our guide took us to so many unspoiled destinations where we can discover beautiful landscapes. Foods were so amazing with all local tastes. In general, all services provided on the tour are so fabulous and flawless and highly recommend this tour to everyone. We'll use them again for other trips
Vietnam Motorbike Tour from Hanoi to Hoi An, Da Nang on Ho Chi Minh Trail & Along the Coast
We had a small group of 3 plus a guide from Hanoi to Saigon. Mr Dong and the DNQ Travel company are very professional so have no fear of the trip not being well organised or fraud. Their communication with customers is also very prompt. Our guide was excellent, breakdowns like flat tyres or clutch cable breaks - he managed. The bikes were Honda CRF 250cc and were fantastic over any terrain. We biked through 2 typhoons and other wet weather - well one was mostly on a re8st day!
Cycle Saigon to Hanoi
All pretty good really. A couple of easy points though: Our guide was absolutely terrific but (so blame whatever on him please) we didnt have any chance to look closely into any active religious events, spaces, ceremonies, or temples, an important part of the country's culture. There were several rather too similar visits to ex-palace museums and mausoleums, so I think one or two of these could be substituted by something interesting or ceremonial in different current local religious practices/venues. The 'snorkel event' needs further thought. Nice day out on the boat, sure, but the sea bed in the snorkel site is nothing to write home about and the water isnt too clean. There are health and safety issues too as the vessel was anchored some distance from the snorkel site and the weather was a little breezy and choppy. Given that most of the group I was with were 'senior citizens', I found it odd that there was no safety swimmer standing by and no obvious recovery line/float system.
Road Biking the Ho Chi Minh Highway
Go now before Vietnam changes. It was an epic tour into small towns and villages where people stopped to stare at us, ask to have photos taken with us,and where children ran to the road to wave and shout hello. The scenery is beyond description. The towns are changing rapidly as the Ho Chi Minh Highway brings the desired economic development to this region of Vietnam. In a few years it will be impossible to repeat this experience.
Vietnam by Bike
Very well planned, everything worked well, only on the day of arrival in Saigon I would skip the visit to the craft beer pub and instead go for a nice and authentic place for lunch as we arrived hungry after the flight from Danang. Also I would propose a ride through Saigon with the van and see the most interesting sights because its such a big city to see on foot.
This was our first trip with Explore - and indeed our first Group trip. Everything was amazing. The amount of cycling was perfect, rest stops, support teams, photo opportunities, planning.....everything. A group of four people is a little 'intense' however on the whole we navigated the relationships well within the group. One of the highlights for us was Binh himself. He was such an amazing Guide/Tour Leader - words don't really convey how important he was to our enjoyment of the experience. For us, his personal stories made Vietnam's history come alive, and yet he took care to convey many perspectives on the recent history of the country and people. We were able to meet his parents and visit his home which was really a very special moment. Binh is a real asset to Explore. He is articulate, skilled, very caring and respectful - to the people of Vietnam, to the tour participants and support teams, and to the organisation Explore. With development and growth opportunities he could go very far as a mentor and leader in the company and in the tour industry.
Cycling Vietnam Saigon - Hanoi
Having been to Vietnam before, we booked this tour as a new way of experiencing this wonderful country. It did not disappoint. With Tung's expert guidance we explored the highlands and central coast, mostly using little-travelled backroads that took us through grand scenery and busy villages, through rice fields, across passes and along countless shrimp farms and monuments to ancestors. We cycled a total of 500km in the 10 biking days, but the daily amount is flexible as the van accompanying us would enable a shortening (or extending) of daily distances. Taking our food preferences into account we were guided to local eateries and street food vendors where we experienced the best local dishes. Accomodations were excellent and the fact that we had nothing to worry about at all during the whole trip made this tour absolutely the best way to visit Vietnam. I wholeheartedly recommend their tour to anyone who is keen on some active exploration of Vietnam and hope to be able to return myself to do some more exploring with them!

Sweltering heat, 30 stages and big mountains: Inside Vietnam's HTV Cup, the first post-coronavirus race
The race has previously featured a massive 30 stages and crossed into both Laos and Cambodia
- Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter
There was finally some good news last week when it was announced bike racing would be returning to the road and to our screens , albeit from a rather unexpected source.
The HTV Cup is Vietnam's biggest and oldest bike race, with the 32nd edition starting on Tuesday May 19 and held over 18, yes you read that right, 18 stages. It's basically a Grand Tour. Actually, two years ago they had 30 stages and passed through Laos and Cambodia, so scratch that, this is bigger than a Grand Tour.
Despite having a population of 97 million and sharing a long border with China, where the coronavirus originated, the Southeast Asian country has recorded no deaths among just 300 cases. Vietnam took extreme measures to contain the virus after their first case on January 23, closing borders and putting a vast contact tracing operation into motion. It's been nearly a month since its last community transmission and therefore the country is starting to open up again.
Usually scheduled for April, the HTV Cup was pushed back by coronavirus, but as many aspects of normal life return to Vietnam, bike racing does too.
>>> ‘This story isn’t just about me having strong legs’: The trials and tribulations of Nicholas Roche and the Vuelta a España
HTV stands for Ho Chi Minh City Television, who organise and broadcast the race, and since 2018 it's been shown live on YouTube and Facebook. In this so far fallow season, Vietnam has the chance to show off its premier cycling event to worldwide cycling fans who are desperate for some racing action.
We spoke to organisers, riders and members of Vietnam's cycling community to find out more about the race that can fill the racing-shaped hole in our lives.

Vietnam's Grand Tour
First, a brief history of the HTV Cup. The inaugural was held in 1988 in order to not only promote the HTV brand but to help the company's employees develop their skills in live broadcasting. As the race became more popular over the years, the number of stages increased and had even started visiting neighbouring countries by 2006.
Just like a European Grand Tour, the race features mountain stages, flat sprint days, as well as time trials. The race usually takes place in April, with their equivalent of the Tour de France's final destination at the Champs-Élysées in Paris being a finish at the Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City at noon on April 30th, which coincides with the anniversary of Vietnam's Unification Day in 1975. This gives the event a patriotic significance for the country, and the race has become the breeding ground for many of the country's top cyclists to be discovered and developed.
The total distance of the 2020 race is 2,183km, with 12 flat stages and six that tackle mountains or hills. The longest climb is on stage 15 and is 20km in length, with an average gradient of nine per cent. If you google Ngoan Muc Pass, situated 350km east of Ho Chi Minh City in the south of the country, the first thing that comes up is a website listing the world's dangerous roads.
However, the mountain pass in Ninh Thuan province, which was known to the French as Bellevue Pass, is known for its spectacular views at an altitude of 980m. On a clear day, you can see the ocean 55km away as you wind up and down the hairpin roads.
Vietnamese cycling culture
"The mountains and scenery will need a whole other interview," says Spaniard Javier Sardá Pérez, who along with Frenchman Loïc Desriac make up the European contingent of the Vietnamese scene.
"The popularity of bike racing in Vietnam has gone crazy in the last five years," Pérez tells Cycling Weekly . "Last year, as well as all the normal pro races, we had an amazing event called the Coupe de Hue that had Cadel Evans riding in it, and I won." Held over two stages, the first was a 15.2km uphill time trial with an average 8.3 per cent gradient that started at sea level and finished at 1,260m.
Vietnam boasts a total of 14 cycling teams and has around four races for men and two for women organised each year. Alongside football and basketball, cycling is one of the most popular sports in the country. Bicycles, along with motorbikes and mopeds, are also the most popular form of transport in the country, and Pérez says it took him some time to adapt to riding amongst the deluge of motorbike traffic.
Vietnam cycling fans enjoy the big European races, such as the Grand Tours, just as much as any other nation. When asked which are the big names and teams Vietnamese fans enjoy supporting, Team Ineos were noted, as well as an interesting mix of the larger-than-life characters of the sport: Bradley Wiggins, Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and Peter Sagan.
"The pro scene here is way more akin to the UK scene before Bradley Wiggins [and his Tour de France success] blew it up," says David Lloyd, founder of Velo Vietnam, who is also director of the Vietnam Trail Series , which organises jungle marathons and ultra-marathons.
"It's much more niche, a passion sport that people who were cycling fans in the UK in the 1970s would recognise."
Lloyd says Vietnamese teams only had domestic riders for a long time but now have a few riders from overseas. The larger races also now often include teams from the region, with one female stage race featuring an Australian team last year.
"While [compared to Europe] it lacks the big sponsorship, TV coverage and the recognition of the Grand Tours, it does not lack their length or ambition," Lloyd argues, pointing to the number of stages often making up races.
"What people might be surprised to learn is these races include mountain stages that do rival the European greats - one climb is over 30km in length from the sea up to the highlands of Dalat, for example.
"Here in Hoi An, where I'm based, I will often run into the youth national team on a training ride and they'll not only be fine with you jumping on but actively encourage you to do so. It's a super friendly cycling culture here."
The defending champion
Javier Sardá Pérez began cycling when he was six. He made his way up the junior ranks in the north of the country, eventually joining the national set-up and winning several races against the best his country had to offer. However, after lacking opportunities in 2016 when he was in the U23 category, he decided to accept an offer to ride for the Japanese Victoire-Hiroshima team.
"It was a tough season," Pérez says. "The adaption to Japanese racing took me a few months but after a while I manage to start getting some decent results in the Japan Pro Tour."
The next year he joined the Vietnamese Bikelife team, racing in the HTV Cup and winning the queen stage and coming second in the GC. He improved further in 2018, taking a number of stages in local races as well as his first overall victory.
Having experience of both the European and Vietnamese scenes makes Pérez a great person to offer insight into the differences and similarities between the two.
"Here [in Vietnam] we spend a lot of the time with the team," he explains. "We usually train together every day, which helps us work together and makes it easier to defend a jersey in a race. I think in Europe riders look out for themselves more than working for the team compared with here."
Otherwise, the racing is pretty recognisable, with breakaways going away and being caught, as well as hectic bunch sprints, albeit riders also have to battle against searing temperatures and high humidity.
Another obvious difference is the food. "Vietnamese cuisine is very different than European," says Pérez. "Although we can get all types of food in the big cities, sometimes if we have a finish line in a small town it's more complicated."
None of this stopped Pérez winning the 2019 edition, who says the time trial proved crucial to his victory. But the 2018 race, which had more than double the number of stages than when he won, was his craziest experience racing in the country so far. " I'd never done such a long race like that and I didn’t know it was possible either," he says.
For the 2020 edition, only a few precautions will be taken in light of the coronavirus. People who live outside the country aren't permitted to take part, meaning riders will only have to wear face-masks in between racing and wash their hands as much as possible. Meanwhile, the slight delay will make it hotter than usual, often reaching a sweltering 35C.
"The Vietnamese Government did a great job and the virus is under control," says Pérez. " I was training hard during the months off, thinking only about this HTV Cup, so I hope my legs and my team can do a really good job and bring another yellow jersey to Ho Chi Minh City."

Hi. I'm Cycling Weekly's Weekend Editor. I like writing offbeat features and eating too much bread when working out on the road at bike races.
Before joining Cycling Weekly I worked at The Tab and I've also written for Vice, Time Out, and worked freelance for The Telegraph (I know, but I needed the money at the time so let me live).
I also worked for ITV Cycling between 2011-2018 on their Tour de France and Vuelta a España coverage. Sometimes I'd be helping the producers make the programme and other times I'd be getting the lunches. Just in case you were wondering - Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen had the same ham sandwich every day, it was great.

Due to the unpredictability of the weather in Vietnam, we recommend packing some protective gear for your cycling adventure. Waterproofs, a helmet, sunglasses and sunscreen should all be considered for your trip. These items will help protect you from both the hot sunny days and wet weather that often comes from the tropical climate.
Other vital things to consider are medications, a first aid kit, a backpack, a reusable water bottle and electronics. These will help create a comfortable experience for those biking in Vietnam. Plus, with so many photo-worthy opportunities along the way, a phone or camera is a must for your trip across the country!
We hope that after reading this article you can now plan your next bike tour in Vietnam with all of the information you need in mind. This stunning country has much to offer a range of travellers, providing something for all. With breathtaking natural surroundings, vibrant cities and lots of cultural exploration, you’re sure to find something here for the whole clan. What’s more, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in all that Vietnam has to offer than by partaking in a biking expedition.

Vietnam's reinvention as Southeast Asia's most exciting tourist destination has long since been complete. Hanoi is the capital, and Ho Chi Minh City- formerly Saigon has French colonial landmarks. After wars for the more significant part of the 20th century, the country is now a hotspot for foodies, beach bums, and thrill-seekers alike. Its capital, Hanoi, has managed to retain its old-style feel despite an economic boom. Its Old Quarter is a riot of delectable food stalls, markets, and labyrinthine streets. Ho Chi Minh City serves up a more modern edge, while the UNESCO-protected town of Hoi An, and has kept its charm despite the swathes of tourists. From Ha Long Bay to the Mekong Delta via the beaches of Da Nang, Vietnam's natural wonders make it truly magical. Population is estimated at 97,338,579 people by 2020.

Language: Quoc Ngu - Latin Alphabet The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, which is the mother tongue of the Vietnamese people, who constitute 86% of Vietnam's population and about three million overseas Vietnamese. And it is the second language of the ethnic minority groups in the country. It is monosyllabic, with each syllable having six different tones that can change the word's meaning. It makes it quite difficult for new learners. Besides the official language, each ethnic minority group has its dialect that has been used and preserved in daily life. The Vietnamese writing system in use today is an adapted version of the Latin alphabet, with additional diacritics for tones and certain letters. The use of accent marks indicates the different tones. This system of writing, called Quoc Ngu, was created by a French Catholic missionary, Fr. Alexander De Rhodes, in the 17th century to translate the scriptures. When France invaded Vietnam in the late 19th century, French gradually replaced Chinese as the official language in education and government. In addition, many Sino-Vietnamese terms Western ideas imported through the French. However, the Romanized script did not predominate until the beginning of the 20th century.

Each of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam has its distinct custom with many different traditional costumes and liturgies. Brief itinerary, detailed itinerary.
Day 1 : Hanoi
Our guide meets you at your hotel at 13:00hrs for a bike fit.
Post that, walk the busy streets of Hanoi visiting some of the cultural and historical highlights of Hanoi. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, which was constructed nearly a millennium ago, and is delicately elevated in a pond. Also visit the Temple of Literature, dating back close to a thousand years, is a wonderfully preserved piece of ancient Vietnamese architecture and stands to honor the scholarly achievements of the country’s academics and philosophers. Continue exploring the area around Hoan Kiem (Sword) Lake, the old quarter including Ngoc Son Temple, which sits perched on a little island in the lake. In the evening, we convene over dinner.
Day 2 : Halong City
Day 3 : Halong Bay - Cat Ba Island
A quick ferry journey amidst spectacular limestone mountain scenery brings us to Cat Ba Island. After lunch, get on the bike for a loop around the island. Enjoy the stunning sunset over the limestone mountains.
Day 4 : Kayak and Shuttle to Ninh Binh
After a hearty breakfast, get on board a smaller boat and take a journey to the more remote and secluded parts of the Lan Ha Bay waters and islands. Trade your boat with a kayak and explore the lagoons, the coral reef, beaches, and limestone peaks. Ferry back to Hai Phong and journey towards Ninh Binh.
The distance from Halong to Ninh Binh is approximately 170km. We spend around 3 hours in transit, and if time permits, unload the bikes for a cycling journey on backroads, along the dike, covering approximately 20-25km to reach the hotel. Anticipated arrival time at the hotel is between 16:00 and 17:00.
Day 5 : Ninh Binh
A short cycling ride along the river brings us to Trang An, known as Halong Bay on land. The landscape is largely dominated by limestone mountains, rivers, caves, and pagodas. Here we take a boat ride and get to experience the magical scenery dotted with natural and cultural wonders.
We take a break at the ancient city of Hoa Lu for a quick temple tour and then loop back through the stunning landscape.
Day 6 : Pu Luong
It’s a long day interspersed with transfers and rides. We start with a transfer of about 90min to the starting point for our cycling. Unload the bikes and cycle on largely undulating paths. We continue cycling past acacia plantations, sugarcane fields, and corn farms dotted with Thai and Muong Tribes' villages. Arrive in Pu Luong, and check in at a family lodge located in the heart of Pu Luong Nature Reserve.
Day 7 : Pu Luong
Pu Luong is a beautiful region located in northern Vietnam and known for its stunning natural landscapes, lush green rice terraces, ethnic minority villages, and pristine forests. The area is characterized by its tranquil and picturesque scenery and offers a variety of trekking and hiking opportunities. There are numerous trails through the terraced rice fields, across suspension bridges, and into the heart of the forested hills.
Today we go hiking in Pu Luong, promising an immersive journey through the picturesque terrains of Don Village, Hieu Village, and culminating at the breathtaking Hieu Waterfall.
For those seeking a leisurely day, feel free to opt for a rest day and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Whether hiking or relaxing, Pu Luong invites you to savor the richness of its landscapes and culture at your own pace.
Hiking : 10-15km
Day 8 : Mai Chau
Another day of the undulating ride. Cycle past a spectacular mountain range with karst cliffs, terraced rice fields, and a typical agricultural landscape, ending at the beautiful valleys of Mai Chau. The experience is truly unique as we get to experience a good change in landscape.
Mai Chau is a collection of villages and offers a true rural cycling experience. Do enjoy the evening walking around the valley and admiring simple rural life amidst spectacular scenery.
Day 9 : Fly to Hue
Today enjoy a thrilling loop around the gorgeous valley and experience Mai Chau village life at close quarters. It’s an off-beat trail and some sections are over a gravel road. We pass by many bucolic villages where children come to greet us and through tumbling steams. The region is mainly inhabited by White Thai people.
In the evening, take a short flight to Hue. Our guide meets at the airport and then transfer you to your hotel. Hue is a city located in central Vietnam, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and scenic beauty. The Perfume River flows through Hue, adding to the city's charm. Taking a boat trip on the river is a popular activity. Hue is also known for its traditional arts and crafts, including delicate porcelain, intricate embroidery, and distinctive Hue-style cuisine, which is renowned for its sophisticated flavors and presentation.
Day 10 : Hué
Today take your bicycle out for an early morning leisurely loop around the imperial town of Hué. Ride past the Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda, Mausoleums, and the merchant’s houses along the banks of the Perfume River and through quiet lanes with lush gardens.
If you're up for more riding, explore the ‘purple city’ on a short countryside loop on a bike, swerving to unthreaded nooks and corners through the beautiful rural countryside and absorbing this historic capital city of Vietnam at your own pace. Take a short transfer out of Hue to visit the Thanh Toan Bridge, an ancient architectural monument extremely valuable in terms of its history and culture. This is one of two bridges remaining in Vietnam today that retains its unique architectural style. We then cycle on to Dam Chuon Lagoon, a part of the Tam Giang Lagoon system. This is a must-see spot for all those who are lovers of beautiful scenery and keen photographers.
We continue riding to Thuan An beach, an ideal place for relaxation. On the way to the beach, there will be many houses, temples, pagodas, rice fields, and beautiful gardens to see and explore. Upon arrival at the beach, enjoy a swim and then jump back on the bikes and head to Con Te Islet.
Loopback to Hue, and stop at Sinh Village – an ancient village well known for its artists and beautiful, traditional, craft woodblock paintings.
Day 11 : Hoi An
After a hearty breakfast, we take a short transfer out of Hue to the coast. Begin riding off the beaten track along a picturesque, narrow peninsular road. Cross the estuary of the Perfume River and from here, challenge yourself by cycling up the Phuoc Tuong Pass then take a short transfer to Lang Co and have lunch by the gorgeous lagoon.
Later, ride along the Lang Co Bay with spectacular views of winding paths, wooden fishing boats, waterfalls, mountains, and forests, and bike over gradual hills to climb Hai Van pass for views of this splendid bay. This rugged pass is the final section of the Truong Son Range stretching to the sea. From the pass, go downhill to the base and shuttle to Hoi An, a delightful old trading town and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 12 : Hoi An
The architectural beauty of Hoi An will captivate you as this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a melange of Vietnamese, European, Chinese, and Japanese monuments in an unhurried, timeless setting.
Today you can plan your own day, and enjoy the enchanting Hoi An town at leisure. A paradise for shoppers, a walk through the town gives a feel of an open-air museum.
Day 13 : Fly to Saigon
Get up early today for a short flight to Saigon. Our guide meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel. Later, go on a walking tour to explore some of the most popular sites (Ben Thanh Market, Saigon Opera House, Continental Hotel, The Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and Post Office, and The War Remnants Museum). This walking tour gives an excellent introduction to the city’s history and provides you with plenty of opportunities to soak up the unique mix of chaos and tranquility that is modern-day Saigon.
Day 14 : Tra Vinh
A short shuttle transfer brings us to the outskirts of My Tho — the gateway to the Mekong delta. We ride along a small creek to Mekong estuary past gorgeous paddy fields and lush orchards. Along the way, we cross a river on a local ferry. After 20 kms (12.5 mi) of biking, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
Post-lunch, we ride in the van for 30 minutes before beginning our afternoon cycling. We ride past coconut plantations on a smooth surface, and under a green canopy of trees growing on either side of the road. En route, we stop at a local family to see how they use coconut fiber to make ropes and use coconut leaves to make thatched huts. After another 30 kms (18.6 mi) miles of cycling, we load our bikes in the van and drive for 40 minutes to our hotel, the Coco Riverside Lodge.
Before dinner, our hotel organizes a fun cooking class where they teach how to make rice pancakes.
Day 15 : Can Tho
We begin the day with a 40 minute shuttle transfer to head deeper into the delta. We then visit a beautiful Khmer Pagoda before beginning the day's biking. We ride past numerous rice fields, rivers, and canals, and over a multitude of bridges that may offer views of floating villages. Apart from rice fields, the region is dotted with many plantations of banana, coconut, and citrus trees.
We stop for coffee after biking for 25 kms (15.5 mi), and then bike another 21 kms (13 mi) before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.
It’s a long ride today through the interior trails of Mekong Delta to Can Tho. Post lunch, we ride another 20 kms (12.4 mi) on these trails and even cross a river on a local ferry before loading our bike in the van and driving for 90 minutes to Can Tho.
Day 16 : Cai Be
We start this day at 7:30am and hop on to a boat to experience the early morning Cai Rang floating market. Each boat in this market showcases its distinct specialty, which can be identified by the items hanging on tall poles. While many boats anchor in place, a few gracefully float around, particularly those dedicated to snacks or coffee, catering to the shop owners' needs. The majority of the boats appear weathered, constructed from aged wood and exude a rustic charm.
This bustling market primarily focuses on the sale of fresh produce and food items, ranging from sweet potatoes and watermelons to lychee. Unlike clothing or household goods, the market solely revolves around agricultural products. Exploring this lively marketplace provides a fascinating glimpse into the authentic daily life of the locals. After the boat ride, we disembark onto a pathway made of old railroad ties and proceed to walk along a busy road lined with numerous meat markets, eventually making our way back to the van.
Later ride into the heartland of the Mekong Delta, past the pristine hamlets nestled in the orchards and coconut plantations. Along the way, see farmers working in nursery fruit tree gardens.
We stay tonight at the Ba Linh homestay, which was one of the first homestays started in this region to welcome tourists. They cook their meals in the traditional Vietnamese fashion using firewood which adds a more authentic flavor to the food. The homestay, however, does not have AC, and the beds come with mosquito nets to make sleeping comfortable.
Day 17 : Saigon
Take an early morning boat trip to the bustling floating market, and visit handicraft villages and the Cai Be market on land. After the boat trip, cycle to Cai Lay and along the way discover the gardens of Longan (Dragon eyes). We continue cycling to My Tho and visit the ornamental Khmer pagoda of Vinh Trang. Later shuttle to your hotel in Saigon or the airport.

Like most tropical regions, Vietnam has hot summers, mild pleasant winters, and an extremely wet rainy season. Being located in the northern hemisphere, the best season for cycling in Vietnam is generally from September to May, with regional variations as described below:
North Vietnam – Hanoi and Halong Bay: The cycling tour season in this region runs from October to May. December and January can be cold with occasional rainfall. May to October is hot, with heavy rain in the months of August and September.
Coastal Vietnam – Hue to Nha Trang: Coastal Vietnam is a narrow crescent-like coastal strip that is at times only 60 km wide. As a result, it experiences coastal weather phenomena such as high rainfall and occasional typhoons during the wet season that runs from September to December. Travelers during this season should be prepared for last-minute changes to the itinerary. The Best season to visit this region is from January to September with the average temperature hovering around 30°C.
South Vietnam – Saigon and Mekong Delta: South Vietnam is a year-round cycling destination because of its pleasant tropical climate. April and May can be hot, but for the rest of the year, the temperature hovers around 30°C. There is moderate rainfall from May to early November but it settles soon, leaving the weather cool and the countryside lush. November to February is the best time for cycling in South Vietnam with warm weather, clear blue skies, and a light ocean breeze blowing in from the Pacific.
Residents from a number of countries have visa exemption status for tourist visits to Vietnam. For a full list of up-to-date visa-exempt countries, see the Vietnam Foreign Affairs website .
Starting August 15, 2023, the Vietnam government will start offering an e-visa valid for up to 90 days with multiple entries, replacing the current 30-day, single-entry option. Furthermore, passport holders from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom will benefit from an extended visa exemption period of 45 days, up from the current 15 days. Eligible foreign nationals will either benefit from a longer duration of stay and greater flexibility with the extended e-visa validity of up to 90 days and multiple entries, or enjoy an extended visa exemption period of 45 days.
e-Visa – You can apply for an e-visa through the government website, then, once approved, simply print it out and present it upon arrival in Vietnam. The additional benefit of the e-visa is that it's valid at land borders, not just airports. The processing time ranges from 2 to 7 working days. We recommend applying 2 weeks in advance to avoid unexpected delays. Read more about tourist e-visas for Vietnam at the Vietnam Immigration portal and apply there.
While applying online for an approval letter, please ensure that you have the following documents:
- Passport scanned copy: A scanned copy of your passport - front (main) page. It shouldn't be a mobile photo or a photo taken from a laptop. Strictly scanned copy done through a computer scanner.
- Passport size photo: portrait photo (4*6 size, colored photo, white background, straight looking without glasses). A photo taken from a mobile or laptop may or may not work, so I would strictly advise getting one made through a nearby photo studio (retail shop) that specializes in taking photos for visas.
Here is an excellent resource on Vietnam visas that may be worth looking at.

I feel that we got a realistic view
I feel that we got a realistic view of Vietnamese citizens which is what we wanted. The bicycles were a great way to see things and engage with people. It was good to have the experience of traveling the length of the country and we are glad we got to Siem Reap as well. All transfers went smoothly and the itinerary was well planned. The guides were helpful in picking our food options and we ate some excellent food. Cycling in Vietnam was not like our other cycling trips in other countries as far as road quality. That was mentioned in the trip literature and should be taken to heart. We rode on some very rough, pitted roads, through gravel, through sand, standing water, and heavy mud. It was a good trip and we are glad we did it.

Trip of a Lifetime!
Doing this trip to Vietnam on by bike, we saw so much more than we otherwise would have. We went to out of the way places and really got to experience how people live. The guides were also knowledgable and accomodating. The excursions were fun and interesting. I learned so much about the country and its history. I would do a trip like this again for sure.

Tour of the Gila 2024
Tour of the gila history.
T he 2024 Tour of the Gila returns for a 37th year, taking place April 24-28 across the foothills of the Pinos Altos Mountains around Silver City, New Mexico. The Tour of the Gila provides five days of racing for elite men and women which is part of the UCI America Tour and USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour.
Similar to past years, the UCI men and women will take part in a trio of road races, one time trial and one criterium. The event also offers amateur categories a reduced number of days.
The elite women will cover 409.2km over the five stages while the men will take on 526.1km, both categories using the same route for stage 3’s uphill individual time trials.
This season it is the lone UCI 2.2 road race in the US, after the Joe Martin Stage Race announced it would suspend operations for 2024 and look to return next year.
In 2023 Austin Killips (Amy D Foundation) won the fifth and final stage in the women’s division and took home the red jersey for the overall title. Marcel Prieto (Pato Bike BMC Team) of Mexico was second overall and Emily Ehrlich (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY24) was third.
The men’s overall title went to Alex Hoehn (Above & Beyond Cancer Cycling, who held off stage 5 winner Óscar Sevilla (Medellín-EPM) by just a two-second margin. Torbjørn Røed (Above and Beyond Cancer) completed the GC podium in third.
Tour of the Gila 2024 route
The race kicks off on April 24 in traditional style with the Mogollon Road Race p/b Grant County. The pelotons will have to endure steep grades on the stiff climb to the ghost town of Mogollon.
Stage 2 is the Inner Loop Road Race presented by Brian & Lynn Robinson/Southwest Bone & Joint. The route passes the rugged terrain of the Gila National Forest and by the Freeport-McMoRan Chino mine with more than 5,800 feet of climbing. It will be 74.1 miles (119.3km) for the women and 76.2 miles (122.6km) for the men.
The third day brings the Tyrone Individual Time Trial presented by Freeport McMoRan, both categories riding the same 16.15 mile (26km) course in the village of Tyrone, which uses an out-and-back course with 1,188 feet of climbing. Wind factors into the stage victory as riders storm down the final descent to the finish line.
Stage 4 is the Downtown Silver City Criterium p/b Town of Silver City. The traditional four-corner course returns for 1.1-mile circuits and an 80-foot climb on the back of the course with a descent into the final corner. The women will race 25 laps and the men 40.
The fifth and final day of racing is all about climbing, the Gila Monster Road Race p/b Gila Regional Medical Center, which is often the deciding factor in the race. Similar to stage 2, the course does a reverse loop through the Gila National Forest and ends in Piños Altos with a narrow, seven-mile ascent. The men cover 161.9km, taking a right turn after passing Lake Roberts and heading past the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument before tackling the category 1 climb to the hilltop finish. The women will race 106km.

Tour of the Gila: Lauren Stephens wins Mogollon climb opener for women
Redlands winner Nadia Gontova second while Marcela Prieto third
Lauren Stephens (Cynisca Cycling) climbed to a solo victory on the opening day of Tour of the Gila and took the first leader’s jersey for the UCI women’s category. Nadia Gontova (DNA Pro Cycling), the recent winner of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, finished second, just nine seconds back. Marcela Prieto (Steve Tilford Foundation) secured third, 1:01 off the pace.
The trio of riders had formed the breakaway of the day on Stage 1 Mogollon Road Race p/b Grant County and with half of the 71 miles (114km) covered had pushed ahead of the peloton by as much as 12:50.
The reigning Pan-American road champion rode with Gontova on the lower, narrow slopes of the 3.8-mile category Mogollon climb and attacked as the steepest pitches of 19%. Gontova could not match the acceleration, leaving Stephens to ride away for the win.
It was Stephens’ fifth appearance at the UCI 2.2 stage race in New Mexico, her top finish in 2015 with third overall and she has never finished outside seventh.
