UNWTO becomes “UN Tourism”

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) enters a new era  with a new name and brand: UN Tourism. With this new brand, the Organization reaffirms its status as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and the global leader of tourism for development, driving social and economic change to ensure that “people and planet” are always center stage.

UN Tourism: Transforming tourism for a better worldTo achieve this goal, UN Tourism engaged the services of Interbrand, the leading global branding agency. Interbrand successfully translated the Organization’s renewed vision for tourism into a new visual identity and brand narrative.

This involved renaming the Organization, transitioning from UNWTO to UN Tourism. At the same time, a new brand narrative was meticulously crafted, one that seamlessly aligns with UN Tourism’s central mission and priorities. This narrative pivots around three main messages: the UN as a global altruistic organization, the notion of connecting humans around the world, and the concept of proactivity and movement.

Enhancing the well-being of individuals, safeguarding the natural environment, stimulating economic advancement, and fostering international harmony are key goals that are the fundamental essence of UN Tourism

By moving away from acronyms, UN Tourism adopts a more approachable stance and capitalizes on its strengths: the “UN”, signifying authority, and tourism, a simple and relatable concept for all. This change has been endorsed by the Organization’s membership, highlighting its united support for the profound transformation and reinvention of UN Tourism in recent years, as it has become more agile, visible, and ever closer to its Member States, partners and the sector as a whole.

With 160 Member States and hundreds of private sector affiliates, UN Tourism has its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, and Regional Offices in Nara (Japan) covering Asia & Pacific, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East, as well as forthcoming Regional Offices for the Americas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Africa (Morocco). Its priorities center on promoting tourism for sustainable development in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Global Goals. UN Tourism promotes quality education, supports decent jobs in the sector, identifies talent and drives innovation and accelerates tourism climate action and sustainability . – UN Tourism Jan. 2024

Vietnam  to welcome 17-18

million  tourists  this year

Việt Nam’s tourism industry has set a target to welcome 17-18 million foreign visitors in 2024, approaching the pre-pandemic record in 2019 when COVID-19 had yet to disrupt global travel.

In 2023, the figure hit 12.6 million, surpassing the initial target set earlier in the year (before China, which accounted for a third of foreign arrivals to Việt Nam pre-pandemic, announced reopening plans) by 57 per cent and achieving the adjusted goal of 12-13 million.

The number of domestic travellers, meanwhile, stood at 108 million, up 6 per cent compared to the set target. Tourism activities generated about VNĐ678 trillion (US$27.85 billion) in revenue, 4.3 per cent higher than the yearly plan.

Despite substantial recovery in 2023, the Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) said the domestic tourism recovery will still face challenges in the year ahead. This is particularly true in the context of the unpredictable global developments stemming from economic uncertainties, regional conflicts and climate change.

Việt Nam’s socio-economic conditions remain stable; the economy continues to grow and inflation has been kept in check. But the persistent threat of disease and natural disasters are likely to create uncertainty affecting production, business activities and the daily lives of citizens.

According to forecasts from the UN World Tourism Organisation and the World Travel and Tourism Council, international travel activities may fully recover by the end of 2024, reaching the levels achieved in 2019. However, the recovery is expected to be uneven across different regions.

The ever-changing demands of international tourists require higher standards in product quality, diversity and unique experiences. The trends of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation are envisioned to drive the emergence of new forms of tourism.

Based on these analyses and projections, Việt Nam aims to serve 17-18 million foreign and 110 million domestic visitors this year, with an expected total revenue from tourism nearing VNĐ840 trillion.

To achieve the stated objectives, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Văn Hùng has instructed the VNAT to continue focusing on advising and improving the institutional framework, policies, reviewing identified deficiencies for adjustment, and international commitments in the field of tourism. Collaboration with other ministries and sectors is emphasised to formulate policies for developing various types of products such as agricultural tourism and digital transformation in tourism. He also noted the need for attention on strengthening tourism statistics and digital transformation to enhance the effectiveness of data collection, providing reliable figures to efficiently support tourism policy planning.

The ministry also calls for enhanced training for tourism officials and workers to meet requirements of new situations, especially in terms of language proficiency and technology expertise. — VNS

Global Medical Tourism market

USD 136.93 billion in 10 years

Newark, Jan. 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Brainy Insights estimates that the USD 20.07 billion in 2022 global Medical Tourism market will reach USD 136.93 billion by 2032. There is a growing trend towards health and wellness tourism, with individuals seeking medical treatments, preventive care, wellness programs, and holistic health experiences. Medical tourism destinations can capitalize on this trend by offering comprehensive health and wellness packages.

Furthermore, integrating digital health technologies, including telemedicine, virtual consultations, and electronic health records, can enhance the accessibility and coordination of medical tourism services. Digital platforms can streamline pre-travel consultations, post-treatment follow-ups, and information exchange between healthcare providers and patients. Introducing new and advanced medical treatments, therapies, and procedures can attract medical tourists seeking cutting-edge healthcare solutions. Countries and healthcare providers that stay at the forefront of medical innovation can position themselves as leaders in the industry.

In addition, customized and personalized medical tourism packages catering to individual patient’s unique needs and preferences present an opportunity for service providers. Tailoring experiences that include cultural activities, recovery retreats, and concierge services can set providers apart in a competitive market.

Besides, wellness tourism, including genetic testing and personalized health assessments, is gaining traction. Medical tourism destinations can offer specialized wellness packages, including genetic evaluations and preventive health screenings, to attract individuals interested in proactive healthcare.

China eases visa application for US tourists

BEIJING: China will simplify visa applications for tourists from the United States from Jan 1, cutting the documents required, according to a notice on Friday (Dec 29) on the website of the Chinese embassy in Washington.

The move is the latest by China to revive tourism and boost the world’s second-largest economy following a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourist visa applicants in the US will no longer need to submit air ticket bookings, hotel reservations or an invitation letter, the embassy’s notice said.

Beijing earlier cleared the way for passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to visit the country without visas from Dec 1.Visa-free treatment will run for 12 months, during which tourists from those six countries can visit China for up to 15 days. China also expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries in November.

The number of inbound tourists to the country plummeted during the pandemic due to the country’s strict COVID-19 control policies.

China’s visa-free policy facilitates

travels from 6 countries

Around 214,000 people from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia entered China in December 2023, an increase of 28.5 percent compared with November, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

China’s unilateral visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from these countries took effect on December 1, facilitating inbound travels from there.

Of these inbound trips, 118,000 were made by ordinary passport holders without a visa, accounting for 55.1 percent of all inbound trips from the six countries during this period. Around 91,000 visa-free entries were made for travel and business.

Thanks to the visa-free policy, ports in the southern Chinese city of Nanning welcomed many inbound travelers. Data showed that 121 inbound travel groups of nearly 2,800 people entered China through ports in Nanning in December.

Since the inception of the visa-free policy, ports in Beijing had, by December 31, witnessed more than 12,000 visa-free entries from the relevant countries.

The NIA pledged more optimized entry-exit management policies for foreigners to facilitate their business, study, work, and life in China.

Tourists Arrival in Nepal: A Remarkable Revival in 2023

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Nepal, known for its breathtaking landscapes, towering peaks, and rich cultural heritage, has long been a favoured destination for global tourists. September 2023 witnessed a commendable rise in tourist arrivals by air, revealing a promising picture of the tourism sector’s resilience and revival.

A Glimpse into the Figures

According to the NTB , in September 2023, the number of tourists that arrived in Nepal by air was a staggering 91,012. This shows a significant growth compared to the previous years:

  • 2023 : 91,012
  • 2022 : 58,314
  • 2021 : 9,907
  • 2019 : 92,604

The numbers from 2020 and 2021 underscore the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global travel industry, particularly on Nepal’s tourism sector. However, the data from 2023 indicates a remarkable recovery, bringing the sector almost at par with the 2019 levels.

Moreover, the departure figures for September 2023 were reported at 69,422, whereas the cumulative number of tourists from January to September stood at an impressive 6,92,372.

When comparing the tourist arrival figures of 2023 to those of 2019, one of Nepal’s pre-pandemic peak years for tourism, the revival rate is a notable 98.28%.

Leading Tourist Generating Countries

The top 10 nations from where tourists arrived in Nepal in September 2023 are:

  • India : 28,694
  • China : 8,174
  • USA : 7,364
  • Bangladesh : 3,716
  • Australia : 3,685
  • United Kingdom : 3,640
  • Sri Lanka : 3,011
  • Germany : 2,852
  • South Korea : 2,018
  • Israel : 1,734

With its proximity and cultural ties, India continued to lead the chart, followed by China and the USA. The diversity in the list of top 10 countries is a testament to Nepal’s universal appeal, drawing visitors from different parts of the world.

Rekindling the Tourism Flame

Several factors contributed to this resurgence in tourist arrivals:

  • Health and Safety Protocols : With the successful rollout of vaccines and robust health protocols, tourists feel more confident about travelling.
  • Promotional Campaigns : Nepal’s government, in collaboration with various tourism bodies, launched numerous promotional campaigns to attract visitors.
  • Pent-up Demand : After prolonged lockdowns and travel restrictions, there is a significant demand for travel and experiences, with Nepal being a top choice for nature and adventure seekers.
  • Diversified Tourism Offerings : Beyond trekking and mountaineering, Nepal has been promoting its cultural, religious, and wellness tourism offerings.

Looking Forward

The swift rebound of tourist arrivals in Nepal is a beacon of hope for the country’s tourism sector. With continued efforts, collaboration between governmental bodies and tourism stakeholders, and ongoing promotional campaigns, Nepal is well on its path to not just recovery but possibly even exceeding its past tourism records.

Nepal’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its tourists, coupled with its unparalleled natural and cultural offerings, will undeniably see the nation shine as a leading global tourist destination.

Over 600,000 foreigners visit Nepal in 2022 as tourism industry rebounds

Over 600,000 foreigners visit Nepal in 2022 as tourism industry rebounds

Arrival of tourists from US stands second after India

KATHMANDU, Jan 4: With the declining number of COVID-19 cases in Nepal, the tourism sector is slowly returning back on track. According to the data published by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), more than 600,000 tourists visited Nepal in 2022 against 230,085 visitors in 2020.

This shows that the arrival of tourists in 2022 is showing improvement after almost two years of slump due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tourism entrepreneurs are excited about the increasing number of tourists after the pandemic. Earlier, the hotel occupancy rate was almost nil except for a few guests. However, at present, hotels are seen occupied with domestic as well as international tourists.

“The arrival of 600,000+ tourists in the year 2022 is encouraging for Nepali tourists. This also gives us an indication of how the arrival of international tourists will gradually increase in 2023 and in the coming years,” said Binayak Shah, the first vice president of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN).

According to Shah, at present, every country is dependent on tourism, be it a developed or a developing country as it is one of the quickest ways for economic recovery in the post-pandemic period.

“At present, most of the tourism destinations across the world are reeling under the problem due to a limited number of tourists. How a nation prepares for the development of their tourism sector plays a vital role,” Shah added.

According to the World Bank, the tourism sector contributes 6.7 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP), while its total impact was US$ 2.2 billion. In addition, in 2019, tourism supported over one million direct and indirect jobs, or 6.7 percent of total employment. Approximately 80 percent of these jobs are in the most remote and resource-constrained regions.

Based on the number of tourists who visited Nepal, the largest number of tourists came from neighboring India. According to the statistics of NTB, more than 200,000 tourists from India entered Nepal in 2022 (January-December). Out of a total of 614,148 tourists who visited Nepal, 209,105 tourists entered Nepal from India alone. This is about 35 percent of the total visitors. The data includes the tourists via air route only.

Similarly, the United States ranks second in terms of tourist arrivals. More than 77,000 tourists entered Nepal in 2022 from the USA. This is 14 percent of the total number. The UK ranks third in terms of tourist arrival followed by Australia and Bangladesh. A total of 44,700 tourists visited Nepal from the UK, 26,800 from Australia, and 25,300 tourists from Bangladesh in 2022.

HAN’s First Vice President Shah said that the tourism sector is eagerly watching if the new government will implement the concept of Tourism Decade forwarded by the previous government.

“With the formation of a new government, political leaders at present are busy in power-sharing deals. The previous government has declared the Tourism Decade (2023-2032) for the promotion of tourism in the post-pandemic period. Thus, the major challenge here is to see whether the new government will be stable or not. Similarly, will the new government take ownership of the programs brought by the previous government also is the biggest question.”

Shah also mentioned that Nepal is in need of mega international events to promote tourism in the post-pandemic era.

“We are ready to welcome tourists across the world at present. Therefore, Nepal needs mega events of international standard to show the world that we are ready to welcome them. Our first priority should be on how to promote Nepal in the international market.”

In 2022, Nepal saw the highest number of tourists visiting the country in the month of October followed by November and December. In October, 88,582 tourists visited Nepal while 72,653 tourists arrived here in November and 67,932 in December. However, in the beginning of 2022, tourism-related activities were not very encouraging. In January 2022, only 16,975 tourists arrived in Nepal followed by 19,766 tourists in February.

The previous government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had prepared a strategic action plan with the concept of Nepal Tourism Decade 2023-2032 to revive the tourism sector of Nepal.

The action plan has set a target to bring in 3.5 million foreign tourists a year by 2032. It also aims to create employment opportunities for more than one million people in the tourism sector during the decade.

As per the action plan, province and national-level campaigns would be launched for tourism promotion across the country by upgrading infrastructures. There are also plans for massive investment and promotion of tourism in a bid to revive this sector.

The arrival of tourists, which has been sluggish in the past two years, is gradually returning to the rhythm since last year. Since the effects of the pandemic have been seen again in neighboring countries like India, China and South Korea for the past few weeks, questions have been raised about the possibility of its impact on Nepal's tourism and how the country will work to solve the problem.

As the new COVID-19 infection cases have declined steadily in the last two months, the Nepali tourism sector has started gaining traction lately.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the number of foreign visitors to the country dropped by more than 80% in 2020 , the lowest in 34 years.

Nepal Tourist Arrivals 2020

A total of 230,085 international tourists visited Nepal in 2020 , as the coronavirus pandemic restricted global travel.

“The arrival figure is far worse than the downturn during the Maoist insurgency (1996-2006) and the 2015 earthquakes combined,” said Dhananjaya Regmi, NEB CEO.

“But we hope to rebound by mid-2021,” he added.

Though April, May, and June witnessed the lowest footfall, the number of visitors has increased gradually to around 10,000 in December, giving the much-needed hope for the Nepali tourism sector .

Visit Nepal 2020 Tourist Arrivals

With the resurgence of foreign visitors, the NTB has started preparing strategic plans to attract more tourists to the country. Meanwhile, the Nepali Government has issued some relief funds to revive the tourism sector.

Nepal Tourist Arrivals 2017 Vs 2018 Vs 2019

While the Nepali Government has planned to celebrate the year 2020 as the Nepal Tourism Year (Visit Nepal 2020) to attract at least 2 million tourists , the pandemic has halted global travel, tourism, and leisure.

According to the Department of Immigration, as many as 200,000 foreign tourists visited Nepal in the last eight months, a significant drop from 739,000 in the same period last year.

Visit Nepal 2020 campaign

Only 199,903 foreigners have visited Nepal from January to August this year.

Moreover, the number of foreign tourists leaving Nepal is higher than the number visiting the country in the last eight months. As per DoI, 232,082 foreigners left Nepal through Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in the mentioned period.

The Nepali Tourism Board has around ten months in the current fiscal year 2020-21 to revive the tourism sector.

However, the Nepali Government has significantly slashed the budget for the current FY compared to the last fiscal.

The NTB has released a budget worth NPR 807 million for the current fiscal against NPR 1.63 billion allocated last fiscal.

“We have prepared a budget for the current fiscal year by slashing several expenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Except for essential matters, we have not allocated budget for any other purpose,” said Dhananjay Regmi, CEO of NTB.

In 2019, Nepal received a total of 1.17 million foreign tourists , with the highest 209,611 from India, followed by 169,543 from China.

The tourists from the US stood at 93,196; UK 61,139; Sri Lanka 55,869; France 30,644; South Korea 29,679 and Spain 19,057.

Visit Nepal 2020 Tourist Arrivals: 2% Drop in January

The Nepali government has inaugurated the ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ campaign amid much fanfare on January 1, 2020, with an aim to attract 2 million foreign tourists.

Despite promoting the campaign on the global stage, Nepal has witnessed a 2% drop in tourist arrivals in the first month of the tourism year 2020.

January 2020 Tourist Arrivals:

According to the report by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the total tourist arrivals decreased from 81,273 in January 2019 to 79,686 in January 2020, down by 2%. This number includes tourists who traveled to Nepal by air and land routes.

“Of the total tourists, 65,983 entered the country by air whereas remaining 13,703 by land routes,” NTB said.

Top 5 Countries Tourists to Nepal January 2020

“The fall in the tourist arrivals in Nepal is primarily due to the decline in visitors from China”, said Ram Chandra Regmi, an information officer at the Department of Immigration.

Dhananjay Regmi, CEO at NTB, said that the coronavirus outbreak in China , the second-largest source market for Nepal, has directly impacted the tourism arrivals in Nepal.

Many Chinese tourists have already canceled their trips to Nepal amid massive countrywide lockdown in China.

The coronavirus outbreak has not only impeded the tourists from China, but it has also hindered the tourists from India and Europe.

The tourists from countries outside China are cancelling their trips to Nepal as the country shares most of its border with coronavirus-hit China .

The NTB further added that the tourist arrivals drop could be even harsh in February.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Government is taking necessary initiations to fill the gap created by drop in tourist arrivals.

Nepal is continuously launching promotional events and products in countries including Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the Middle East, among others.

Nearly 100,000 foreign tourists entered Nepal in the previous month, indicating a strong recovery in the country's tourism sector compared to the past years.

According to the data released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) today, a total of 98,773 international tourists visited Nepal in April, which is a substantial increase from the 61,589 tourists who arrived in the corresponding month of 2022, 22,732 in April of 2021, and just 14 in April of 2020.

However, the arrivals are yet to recover to the pre-pandemic level, when 109,399 tourists had visited Nepal in April of 2019.

Maniraj Lamichhane, director of NTB, stated that the recent surge in tourist arrivals is a positive sign for Nepal's tourism industry and that the arrivals saw 90.28 per cent recovery last month compared to the corresponding month before the pandemic.

In April, India emerged as the top source country for tourists visiting Nepal, with a total of 31,437 Indian nationals visiting the country. This number constituted 31.83 per cent of the total international tourists who arrived in Nepal during the review period.

In comparison, the number of Indian tourists who visited Nepal during the same month in the previous year was 22,476.

The United States was the second-largest source country of tourists visiting Nepal in April, with a total of 8,413 American nationals arriving in the country. It was an increase from 7,344 American tourists who visited Nepal during the same month in the previous year.

Nepal’s tourism industry will soon revive its strength following the long duration hit by the Covid pandemic if the number of foreign tourists recorded in recent months is anything to go by.

Nepal Tourism Board  says 99,426 foreigners came to Nepal on tourist visas via air route in March, which is the highest of monthly arrival records since the Covid impact in early 2020.

The number makes up 78 per cent of the tourist arrival recorded in March 2019.

In the first three months of 2023, the country recorded 227,755 foreign tourists, informs the board’s director Mani Raj Lamichhane.

While there are hopes that the number will further rise in April thanks to the beginning of the mountaineering and trekking season, there are concerns that the new  rule banning solo trekking  might have  some adverse impact .

Source: Immigration Department Nepal/ Compiled by Nepal Tourism Board (M.R. Lamichhane)

Nepal did open its borders to the tourists from mid 2021 but partially with a handful of travel restrictions. The Government and concerned authorities were busy with vaccination programs. Finally, after things got slightly smooth with traveling, Nepal opened the door to the tourists from September and started providing on arrival visas for the visitors later that month.

As a result, we can see that the number of tourist arrival did increase from last couple of months.

Beside the new variant of corona virus, there has not been any other issues related to the corona virus in the last few months. Along with the exceptions from the visitors traveling from or within some of the African countries, the travel restrictions for the visitors are as much relaxed as it was first mentioned. So we can expect similar number of tourist arrival like past couple of months in December.

The above information of tourist arrival is only taken from the number of tourists who flew by air to Nepal. As a landlocked country, air way is the primary source of tourists arriving in Nepal but the Himalayan nation also receives visitors from neighbouring country who travel via land.
