At a distance of 215 km from Hyderabad, 360 km from Bangalore & 344 km from Vijayawada, Kurnool is one of the major towns in the state of Andhra Pradesh . It was the first capital of united Andhra Pradesh between 1 October 1953 and 31 October 1956. The town is built on the banks of Tungabhadra River. Kurnool is known as the gateway to the Rayalaseema region. It was earlier known as Kandenavolu, as it was a transit place on the southern banks of the Tungabhadra River and acted as a greasing place for the carts. It was ruled by Cholas and later by Kakatiya kings in the 12th and 13th Centuries. Later it came under the influence of Vijayanagar Kings and Achyuta Raya built the Kurnool Fort in 16th Century. It was briefly ruled by local rulers in 16th - 17th century. The town came under the control of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1686. Later the town was ruled by Nawabs from Dawood Khan to Gulam Rasool Khan. In 1839 the British Government took control of the region. The construction of the fort dates back to 12th century when the city of Kurnool was used as a base for halting before crossing Tungabhadra River. 1 – konda reddy fort.

It won’t be wrong to say that the Konda Reddy Fort is the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about Kurnool. It is the remnant of the ancient fortification built around Kurnool, a place that served as a base for the Vijayanagara rulers. It is present in the heart of the city and you can easily find transport options from the local railway station and intercity bus stands. The citadel of the fort was recently renovated and instantly became famous for youth and couples to hang out. 

Konda Reddy Fort mainly served as an observation tower for the soldiers and has three levels. 

The lowest level is for the visitors while the second and third levels were used for observation. The monument is named after Konda Reddy, the last ruler of Alampur, who was imprisoned in this very same fort but managed to escape using the hidden tunnels. Though these tunnels are closed now, tourists can explore the different levels and enjoy a scenic view of the city from the top. 3 – Tomb of Abdul Wahab Khan

Tomb of Abdul Wahab Khan is a one-of-a-kind Kurnool tourist place that will fascinate you with its astonishing architecture. This tomb was built 400 years ago in a classic Islamic style with domes, arches, parapet walls, verandahs, and vaults. It is very close to the famous Osmania College of Kurnool and stands on the banks of the River Hundri. The tomb was built after the demise of Abdul Wahab Khan, a very important Nawab ruler of the place. Initially, Kurnool was under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad who appointed Nawabs that were answerable to him. Later in 1839, the East India Company took over the jurisdiction of Kurnool state.

4 – Yaganti Temple

Yaganti temple is one of the must-visit Kurnool tourist places. This temple is situated in the middle of stunning natural landscapes. You can see the gorgeous Yerramala hills surrounding the holy shrine. This pilgrimage site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati and is also popular by the name Uma Maheshwara temple.  It is believed that the temple was built sometime around the 15th and 16th centuries and has been renovated several times since then. The contributions of the Vijayanagara and Chola kings are clearly evident in its current architectural style. 

There are a lot of people who come to Yaganti temple to explore its mystical charm. The main attraction here is the statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s confidant and greatest devotee. Legend says that this statue of Nandi will keep growing continuously. People have indeed noticed the stone structure grow in dimensions over the years!

5 – Archeological Museum Kurnool

The district archaeological museum is one of the best places to visit in Kurnool, especially for those who like to look back into the history of the city. All of the displays here show us a glimpse of the famous Pallava, Chola, Vijayanagara, and Chalukyan empires. The stone structures you see in the museum were carved during the Vijayanagara rule. You will also see armour and weaponry used by kings and soldiers of the period. 

Certain stone sculptures and pedestals were retrieved from the Srisailam region. There is a section that displays pottery, traditional utensils, and kitchen items from the ancient era. There are paintings and scriptures about Hindu mythology and also some tell the stories of the Vijayanagara and Chalukyan kingdoms. 6 – Oravakulla Rock Garden

This beautiful garden is located about 20 km away from the heart of the city and is one of the main Kurnool tourist places to visit this vacation season. You will find several rock structures between pools of water and the atmosphere of the place is very soothing, especially when you visit in the evening times. The garden is spread across an area of 1000 acres and has beautiful igneous rock formations. There is an ancient cave here too and it is open for exploration! This is one of the most interesting sightseeing places in Kurnool because of its hiking trails up a steep hill. Also, the garden has raw materials that can prove to be very useful in the glass industry. However, the government is hesitant to give mining rights to companies seeing how this can lead to ecological problems.

7 – Mantralayam

Mantralayam is a religious town that shares its borders with Karnataka state. This is one of the major Kurnool places to visit and several people come here in search of peace and tranquility. Everything about Mantralayam is soothing to the soul. There is pristine silence with the occasional sound of the holy bell. This place is renowned as the site where saint Raghavendra’s samadhi rests. He was an important figure in the Madhwa traditions and is often remembered for his compassion, kindness, and devotion to the Gods. 

The Tungabhadra River flows near Mantralayam, adding to the scenic beauty of the place. Pilgrims and devotees usually take a dip in this water before entering the temple where the Samadhi is present. It is said that doing so will rid a person of his sins and cleanse his soul. A clear mind and body are said to attract positive energy once you seek blessings from Raghavendra Swami near his samadhi – Brindavan. 

Before heading back, also visit the Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swami temple in this village. It is one of the best Kurnool tourist places where you will see Lord Hanuman with five heads. These represent Lord Hanuman’s real face, and his forms as Lord Garuda (eagle), Lord Varaha (boar), Lord Narasimha (lion), and Lord Hayagriva (horse).

8 – Mahanandi

Mahanandi attracts a lot of people every year for various reasons. Some come here to seek blessings from the Mahanandi temple while others want to explore the beauty of the Nallamalla hills. The Mahanandi temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has nine shrines of the Lord where you can see him in his nine different forms. The main sanctum sanctorum has a Shiva lingam and this is the Mahanandiswara form of the deity. Adjacent to the Shiva temple, there is Kameswari temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Those who are seeking a spiritual retreat in a natural environment should definitely visit these temples which are the most gorgeous Kurnool tourist places. During festivals like Mahashivratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, the temple authorities organise bhajans, festival celebrations, and special abhisheka poojas. 9 – Belum Caves

You cannot complete your Kurnool trip without paying a visit to the Belum caves. This is the second largest cave formation in the country and was formed over thousands of years because of the underground flow of the extinct Chitravati River. The deepest point of the cave is at ‘Paatalaganga’ and some also believe this to be the gateway to hell! The cave system has long passages which get narrow at some points, galleries, caverns, and freshwater pools. 3.5 km of the cave has been discovered so far but visitors are only allowed to go up to 1.5km inside. 

The cave is known for deposits of black limestone and you will also find quartz in places. There is one main entrance from where tourists enter the cave but otherwise, there are 15 more entrances excluding the main one. The Andhra Pradesh government deemed Belum caves a national treasure and declared these as ‘protected monuments’. Belum caves are about 100 km away from Kurnool so consider covering the place after exploring the other Kurnool tourist places.

8. Buddha Statue

This beautiful statue, situated just 1 km from the city center, is divine intervention. The location attracts a decent amount of crowds on a day-to-day basis. The statue first came into existence in 2005 by the Andhra Pradesh Tourist Development Corporation. It is dedicated to Gautam Buddha for all his contributions. Standing at the height of 40ft from the ground, this site is one of the most beautiful and spiritual Kurnool places to visit during winters.

1. Konda Reddy Fort

2. Orvakal Rock Garden

Orvakal Rock Garden is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Kurnool. Once you visit this rock garden located at about 20 kilometres from Kurnool, the beautiful natural rock formations will surely mesmerise you.

3. Belum Caves

Belum Caves, also known as Belum Guhalu in Telugu, is one of the longest and most extensive cave systems on the Indian subcontinent. The Belum Caves are situated near Belum Village, which is at a distance of about 106 kilometres from Kurnool. Interestingly, the village also derives its name from the caves.

Pataalaganga, situated at a distance of 46 metres from the entrance, is the deepest point of Belum Caves. Deposits of several minerals, especially quartz and limestone, are found inside this cave. It is one of the most spectacular places in the country to learn more about the geology of the area.

Excavations in these caves have led to the discovery of relics that belong to Buddhist and Jain monks. In addition to its natural beauty, these caves are also known for their historical and cultural significance. Thus, they are one of the most popular tourist places in Kurnool district.

4. Tomb of Abdul Wahab

Tomb of Abdul Wahab is one of the most famous monuments in Kurnool. This 17th-century tomb situated near River Handri was constructed in the memory of Abdul Wahab Khan, the first Nawab of Kurnool.

Since the architectural features of the tomb resemble the Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur, it is also known as the Gol Gumbaz. 5. Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary

Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is home to some of the rarest species of flora and fauna in this region. This wildlife sanctuary, spread over an area of about 16.4 square kilometres, is a habitat of some of the most critically endangered species such as the Great Indian Bustard and the Lesser Florican.

In addition to the critically endangered species and migratory birds, one can easily spot several other animals and birds within its premises. 6. Yaganti Temple

Sri Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple, also known as Yaganti Temple, is one of the most famous temples in the region. The magnificent temple was constructed in the 15th century during the reign of Vijayanagara Kings. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was built according to the Vaishnavite traditions.

The temple, Pushkarini, a small pond and the caves near the temple also have a historical and religious significance. Devotees often take a dip in the holy waters of the Pushkarini.

9. Archaeological Museum Kurnool

The Archaeological Museum, located at Budavarapupeta in Kurnool, was opened to the public in the year 1999. The exciting collection of the museum includes artefacts, sculptures, weapons and inscriptions. Most of the items date back between the early Chalukyan era and the late Vijayanagara era.

Shri Jogulamba Temple is one of the most famous holy sites in the Southern region. This temple is considered to be one of the Shakti Peetha in the world. It is believed that the upper teeth of Sati Devi fell here. The temple was constructed in the 6th century by the rulers of Badami Chalukyas.

A place of much historical value with beautiful surrounding areas, Kurnool, is a small town in Andhra Pradesh where much of history left its imprints. The city also is known as The Gateway of Rayalaseema.

Kurnool has in its domain remains of the palace of Gopal Raju (the last Hindu king), ruins of a medieval fort built by Vijaynagar Empire having ancient Persian and Arabic inscriptions and the summer palace built by Kurnool rulers during the 16th century. Kurnool is derived from the names Kandanavōlu or Kandanōlu, which used to be a crossing across Tungabadra river where the caravans were believed to have greased the tires. The Belum Caves have historical importance in the city as well as the Ketavaram rock paintings which are dated back to the Paleolithic era.

Tourist Places To Visit In Kurnool

Kurnool, one of Andhra's dream destinations is situated at a distance of 210 km from Hyderabad and some 350 km away from Bengaluru . Also famous as the Gateway of Rayalaseema, the Kurnool town is located on the bank of the river Tungabhadra. This historic town has a glorious past it was first ruled by the Cholas and later by Kakatiyas during the 12th and 13th centuries. Then, the Vijayanagar rulers governed the city in the 16th century. The town came under the emperorship of the Mughals, Emperor Aurangazeb in 1686. Nawab Dawood Khan and Gulam Rasool Khan then took over after the Mughals and finally the British Government got the complete control of the city in 1839. Nevertheless, the city has major tourist spots that include Srisailam, Yaganti, Ahobilam, Mantralayam, Belum caves, and many more. Let's discuss some of the best places to visit during your visit to Kurnool.

The Majestic Srisailam

The first place on our list is situated a little far away from Kurnool. At some 180 km away from the city center, and one of the banks of the Krishna river, Srisailam is one of the famous twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Srisailam is one of the most celebrated pilgrimage centers of Lord Shiva in the entire nation. This famous site is known for Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple —  a dedication to Lord Shiva — and Srisailam Dam. The temple was exalted during the Vijayanagar Empire structured in a typical Dravidian style has lofty towers and sprawling courtyards talks a lot about the beauty of the temple. It houses the shrine of Lord Mallikarjuna in the form of a linga protected by a three-hooded cobra. 

One of the most notable features of this kshetram is the combination of Jyotirlinga and Mahasakthi housed on one campus. The perfect duo of temples and scenic spots make Srisailam one of the most visited spots. Besides Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple, Pathala Ganga, Sakshi Ganapathi Temple, Akka Mahadevi Temple, Bhramaramba Devi Temple, Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Shikaresvara Temple, and Mallela Theertham are the other unique attractions here. The best time to visit this place is during the Feb/March when the Maha Shivaratri festival is celebrated with great spirits. Usually, it takes a couple of days to visit major tourist attractions in Srisailam.

The Mighty Konda Reddy Buruju or Fort

The second place on our list is the mighty Konda Reddy  Fort. This grand structure is the pride of the town located at a distance of 2 km from Kurnool railway station. Also known as the Konda Reddy Buruju, the construction of this magnificent architecture started in the 12th century. During this time, the city was used as a base for halting before crossing the Tungabhadra River. Between 1530 and 1542, after the Emperor Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagar Kingdom, Devaraya II and Achyutaraya ruled Kurnool and laid the foundation of this stronghold. This mighty structure has different bastions and gateways. The grandson of Rama Raja of Talikota Vijayanagara Kingdom, Gopal Raja ordered the construction of the gateways of the fort in the 17th century. 

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the three levels of the fort were used as a watchtower. Although the ground floor is closed for visitors, you can directly get on to the first and second floor using the stairs. Here you will get a good glimpse of the history of the fort. The first floor has a few enclosures that have large portico, while the second one houses a huge tower that was used for observations. You must be wondering why this fort is called Konda Reddy. Well, there's a story behind it. Konda Reddy was the last ruler of Alampur in the 17th century and was imprisoned in the fort by the Nawab of Kurnool Nawab. While he managed to escape from the fort but lost his territory to the Nawabs of Golconda.

The Beautiful Orvakal Rock Garden

The third one that we want to present is the Orvakal Rock Garden that is situated 20 km from the Kurnool city center. This wonderful site is all filled with the extensive natural beauty of majestic rock formations. Orvakal Rock Garden is located on Kurnool - Nandyal highway, 3 km from Orvakal village. The garden is a rare quartz and silica rock formation with sublime surroundings. The thing that enhances the beauty of this garden is the rocks that are formed around a beautiful lake built naturally right in the center of the site. This makes this place one of the most visited places during your Kurnool trip. AP Tourism has been managing this garden and has built cottages around this place and a restaurant at the entrance of the garden. 

AP tourism has also built a beautiful metallic at the center of the hilltop. The garden has huge structures of animals made from iron that adds to the beauty of the garden. A walkway is constructed within the rock formations allowing visitors to explore the place to its fullest. The management has provided a huge parking space for everyone to park vehicles comfortably without any worries, along with a play area for children just close to the restaurant. The best time to visit this site is between September and February because during this time the lake is filled with water which improves the beauty of this place.

The Amazing Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary

The next fabulous Kurnool attraction is the amazing Rollapadu wildlife sanctuary. This wilderness is located 45 km from the city center and is recognized as one of the best sanctuaries in Andhra Pradesh . It was developed to provide a natural habitat for the endangered Great Indian Bustard. This place is located 5 km from the Rollapadu village and also known as the Rollapadu Bird sanctuary as it also a huge number of migratory birds. Established in 1988, this sanctuary covers an area of 6 sq. km and is a dry grassland area with distinct location settings. The Alaganuru reservoir is 7 km away from the sanctuary and serves as a base for the thousands of migratory birds. 

Rollapadu sanctuary houses a vast number of blackbucks and deers. Jungle cats, jackals, sloth bears, foxes, bonnet macaques are the other attractions of the sanctuary. With over 120 species of birds also attracts several visitors towards the Alaganuru reservoir. The Indian rollers, eagles, mynas, flamingos, bar-headed geese, and Demoiselle Cranes can be spotted easily in the area. Around 800 blackbucks roam around freely in the sanctuary and offer visitors excellent opportunities to click pictures of them in their natural habitat. The best time to visit this place is between October and December as it is the time for migratory birds to pay for their visit. You can also visit a watchtower, a small bird museum, and a guest house near the sanctuary.

The Iconic Yaganti

At just 80 km from the Kurnool city center, Sri Yagantiswamy Temple is the iconic pilgrimage site around Kurnool. The temple is also known by the name Uma Maheshwara Temple which is a dedication to Lord Shiva. This temples lists amongst the most visited places during the Kurnool trip as it is one of the most famous Shiva Temple in the state of Andhra Pradesh . The history of this temple dates back to the 5th and 6th centuries during which several Pallava, Cholla, Chalukaya, and Vijayanagara kings offered their contributions which glorified the temple. The most notable contributions came from the Harihara and Bukka Rayalu kings of the Vijayanagara Empire who finalized the formation of numerous structures in and around the temple.

The temple houses the Shiva & Parvathi (Ardhanareeswara) idols that are crafted from a single stone. It is perhaps the only place in India where the idol of Shiva is worshipped instead of Shiva Linga. Legends say that at this place Sage Agastya exhibited fasting for Lord Shiva and requested Him to appear in the Ardhanareeswara form. The Nandi statue is also pretty attractive and worshipped by many. It's said the statue of Nandhi keeps growing in size. The location of the temple is also pretty attractive as it offers a sublime view of the natural beauty of the surroundings. You can also visit the natural caves around the area where many saints including the Great Telugu saint and astrologer Potuluri Veera Brahmam Garu performed meditation. The Pushkarini (pure water steam) flows continuously in the vicinity where people take a holy dip during their visit to the temple.

The Historic Alampur

Alampur is a historic site located at a distance of 20 km from the Kurnool city center. Alampur is famous for three things: Navabrahma Temple, Jogulamba Temple (a Shakti Peetha), and Sangameswara Temple which were built during the 7th century. Located on the Tungabhadra river banks, Alampur is also known as the western gateway to Srisailam. With enormous rich pilgrimage and historical significance, Alampur came under the kingship of many rulers including the Kakatiyas, Chalukyas, Satavahanas, Vijayanagara, Bahamani Sultans, and Hyderabad Nizams. Legends say that after losing powers from the curse of a saint, Lord Brahma performed penance for Lord Shiva. 

He appeared in 9 different forms and that's why nine temples were constructed to celebrate each of His forms. Bala Brahma Temple houses the Shivalinga in the main temple which is visible in the form of a bull's footprint. The ancient temple of Jogulamba is the 5th of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths of Goddess Shakti. The present temple was constructed in 2005 after the original was destroyed and it houses the idols of that are from the 6th century. Due to encroachments and lack of space and religious activity of Jogulamba and Balabrahma temples the Alampur temples could not be preserved well. Nevertheless, the significance of the temples still remain and must be visited during your trip to Kurnool.

The Divine Ahobilam

Ahobilam is yet another pilgrimage site located at a distance of 140 km from Kurnool railways station. It is regarded as of the most divine pilgrimage site in Andhra Pradesh , and therefore, a must-visit around Kurnool. This place is basically a holy residence of Lord Narasimha, an avatar of Lord Vishnu in man-lion form. As per Hindu mythology, this is the place where the demon Hiranyakasipu was killed by Lord Narasimha. The initial temples were built by the Chalukyas during the 8th century and later on, in the 15th century, the Vijayanagara kings reconstructed several temples around the area.  Ahobilam is located in the midst of dense Nallamala Forest and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. 

Due to the fact that Lord Narsimha is worshipped in 9 different forms, this place is famously called as Nava Narasimha Kshetra. Some of the temples can be visited easily whereas few require difficult treks through rocky paths and thick forest. Lower Ahobilam and Upper Ahobilam are the two parts in which the town is divided. From the nine shrines, Chathravata, Yogananda, and Bhargava Narasimha Swami are situated in upper Ahobilam whereas the remaining six are located in the lower Ahobilam. In the lower Ahobilam, the idol in the temple of Lord Narasimha is believed to be installed by Lord Venkateshwara of Tirupati . For visitors, food is accessible at small canteens and hotels. There's also an arrangement of free food for 400 people in the Brahmana Nitya Annadana Satram in the Upper Ahobilam.

The Deific Mahanandi

One of the last places of interest on our list is the Mahanandi pilgrimage site. Located at a distance of 90 km from the Kurnool city center, it's a holy Shivaite pilgrimage center that is visited by thousands of devotees from different corners of Andhra and India . Mahanandi is a picturesque village located to the east of Nallamala hills and surrounded by thick forest. One can spot 9 Nandis (bulls) within the 15 km radius of the village known by the name Nava Nandis. The primary temple Mahanandiswara is a dedication to Lord Shiva that was built in the 7th century by Chalukyas. Several temples were then built in the 10th century AD by the Nandas and that's how this place got its name. 

The peculiarity of the temple is the crystal clear water in Pushkarini. This water stream flows all through the year and no one knows how the water is able to flow continuously without any interruptions. It is said that the water is so clear that the needle at the bottom can be seen easily. Two pools lie outside the temple and the third one is inside of it. The water in the inside pool flows from the basement of Garbha Gruha where the main idol of Shiva Ling is installed. Devotees can take a dip in the pool as the water level is maintained at five feet. The suggested time to visit the place is during the Maha Shivaratri festival celebrated in February and March. Accommodations are available in the village and near the temple for devotees.

The Devotional Mantralayam

Mantralayam or Manchale is yet another devotional site around Kurnool which is located at a distance of 70 km from the city center. The site is associated with the famous saint Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy, who was a famous Hindu philosopher and saint. He is considered to be the avatar of Bhakta Prahlada (saved by Lord Narsimha an avatar of Lord Vishnu). It's believed that he performed many miracles during his lifetime and therefore devotees have built a temple as a dedication to him on the banks of the River Tungabhadra.

The place is also famous for Manchalamma Temple which is situated near the Samadhi Temple — inside the Mantralayam Mutt complex. Devotees first perform their religious ceremony at the Manchalamma Temple and then they visit the Samadhi Temple. The Nawab of Siddi Masud Khan of Adoni handed over the barren land around Mantralayam to the Mutt of Sri Raghavendra Swamy. Bichchali, Chinna Tumbalam, Panchamukhi Anjaneya Temple, and Alampur are the other attractions near Mantralayam. Accommodation facilities are available near the area along with restaurants and it takes a couple of days to visit the nearby attractions.

The Heritage Caves of Belum

The last place of interest in Kurnool on our list is the Belum Caves. Belum Caves are one of India 's ancient sites located at 43 km from Yaganti in Kurnool district. These historic caves are the second-largest in India and offer a captivating view from the inside. These massive caves are 3235 m long with extended passages. Just as you enter the caves, you’ll spot the deepest point of the caves that is 118 feet. It is said that these caves are a million years old and were formed by the disruption in limestone deposits in the area by Chitravati River that flows 32 km south of the caves. 

Besides the sublime inside view of the caves, the other thing that will attract your attention is the huge Buddha statue near the caves. It is said that ancient Buddhist monks used these caves for meditation. They used the huge meditation hall in the caves for practicing meditation and other Buddhist rituals. This, one of Gandikota ’s top attractions, is situated close to the Kolimigundla village on Nandyal - Tadipatri route. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism has built bridges and pathways for visitors to reach the caves. There’s also a resort run by the AP Tourism department near the entrance of the cave that can be used for a stay and having snacks.

NASA Spots Object Speeding Around the Moon

What the hell is that thing, spider-man pointing.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted a bizarre sliver of an object speeding above the lunar surface last month.

And as it turns out, we're not looking at a UFO — or, uh, maybe an Unidentified Lunar Object — because there's a perfectly human explanation for the lunar apparition.

It turns out that the LRO's image was photobombed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute's Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), otherwise known as Danuri, which is "traveling in nearly parallel orbits," according to a NASA statement .

Despite their similar orbits, it still took impeccable timing to catch a glimpse of the spacecraft — an engineering feat in and of itself.

Danrui launched in August 2022, becoming South Korea's first Moon mission . The spacecraft, which entered lunar orbit in December 2022, is designed to help plan future missions to the lunar poles. It was also used to demonstrate a "lunar internet ," which is a delay-tolerant network that could one day allow landed assets to communicate with Earth.

Scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center "needed exquisite timing in pointing LROC to the right place at the right time to catch a glimpse of Danuri," per NASA.

The reason why Danuri appears as a tiny sliver — rather than a conventional-looking spacecraft with two solar panels and an antenna — is because the LRO's camera exposure time was extremely short at just 0.338 milliseconds. As a result, Danuri appears "smeared to ten times its size in the opposite direction of travel because of the relative high travel velocities between the two spacecraft," according to NASA.

Apart from freezing an orbiting spacecraft in time, the LRO has also spotted remains of crashed lunar landers . Earlier this year, it even shot and bounced a laser off India's Vikram lander in an effort to improve future landers' positioning systems.

Last year, Danuri's NASA-developed ShadowCam spotted the LRO in a perfect role swap, showing the spacecraft's behind perfectly reflecting the Sun's rays.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Arizona Supreme Court rules a near-total abortion ban from 1864 is enforceable

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned.

The ruling allows an 1864 law in Arizona to stand that made abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs one or helps a woman obtain one. 

The law — which was codified in 1901, and again in 1913 — outlaws abortion from the moment of conception but includes an exception to save the woman’s life.

That Civil War-era law — enacted a half-century before Arizona even gained statehood — was never repealed and an appellate court ruled last year that it could remain on the books as long as it was “harmonized” with a 2022 law, leading to substantial confusion in Arizona regarding exactly when during a pregnancy abortion was outlawed.

The decision — which could shutter abortion clinics in the state — effectively undoes a lower court’s ruling that stated that a more recent 15-week ban from March 2022 superseded the 1864 law.

The Arizona Supreme Court said it would put its decision on hold for 14 days, writing that it would send the case back to a lower court so that court could consider “additional constitutional challenges” that haven’t yet been cleared up.

Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, said moments after the ruling that she would not enforce the law.

“Let me be completely clear, as long as I am Attorney General, no woman or doctor will be prosecuted under this draconian law in this state,” Mayes said in a statement, adding that the decision was “unconscionable” and “an affront to freedom.”

Democrats all the way up to President Joe Biden also blasted the ruling.

“Millions of Arizonans will soon live under an even more extreme and dangerous abortion ban, which fails to protect women even when their health is at risk or in tragic cases of rape or incest,” Biden said in a statement. He called the ban “cruel” and “a result of the extreme agenda of Republican elected officials who are committed to ripping away women’s freedom” and vowed to “continue to fight to protect reproductive rights.”

Vice President Kamala Harris announced shortly after the ruling that she would travel to Arizona on Friday “to continue her leadership in the fight for reproductive freedoms."

Responding to questions from NBC News about the Arizona ruling, a spokesperson for Donald Trump's campaign referred only to the former president's comments on Monday that abortion restrictions should be left to states.

“President Trump could not have been more clear. These are decisions for people of each state to make," Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs called for the GOP-controlled Legislature, which is currently in session, to repeal the 1864 ban, though there was no immediate indication that Republican lawmakers in either chamber would take up such an effort.

"We are 14 days away from this extreme ban coming back to life," Hobbs, a Democrat, said at a press conference. "It must be repealed immediately."

While Hobbs said she was "sure" reproductive rights advocates would appeal the ruling in the 14-day window they were given, she also suggested that the best avenue to counter the ruling would be for voters to support abortion rights on the November ballot. A separate, ongoing suit would allow for abortion providers to continue providing services through the 15th week of pregnancy for another 45 days.

"It is more urgent than ever that Arizonans have the opportunity to vote to enshrine the right to abortion in our constitution this November. I’m confident that Arizonans will support this ballot measure, and I’m going to continue doing everything in my power to make sure it is successful," Hobbs said.

In a 4-2 ruling, the court’s majority concluded that the 15-week ban “does not create a right to, or otherwise provide independent statutory authority for, an abortion that repeals or restricts” the Civil War-era ban “but rather is predicated entirely on the existence of a federal constitutional right to an abortion since disclaimed” by the 2022 Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

“Absent the federal constitutional abortion right, and because” the 2022 law "does not independently authorize abortion, there is no provision in federal or state law prohibiting” the 1864 ban.

They added that the ban “is now enforceable.”

Tuesday’s ruling is the latest chapter in a decadeslong saga of litigation in the battleground state over abortion rights. 

Reproductive rights groups had sued to overturn the 19th century law in 1971. But when the Roe decision came down in 1973, a lower state court ruled against those groups and placed an injunction on the 1864 ban that remained in effect until the Dobbs decision.

In March 2022, Republican lawmakers in the state enacted the 15-week trigger ban, which, months later — after the Dobbs decision — snapped into effect. The law makes exceptions for medical emergencies but not for rape or incest. 

Litigation resumed after that decision as lawmakers on both sides of the issue sought clarity on whether to enforce the 1864 near-total ban or the 2022 15-week ban.

A state appellate court initially ruled that both the 1864 and 2022 laws could eventually be “harmonized,” but also said that the 15-week ban superseded the near-total abortion ban and put on hold large parts of the older law.

The decision also sent shockwaves through the reproductive rights community in Arizona and nationally.

Angela Florez, the president of Planned Parenthood Arizona, one of the state's remaining abortion care providers, said her group would now only be able to provide abortion care through the 15th week of pregnancy — and only "for a very short period of time."

The issue, however, could soon be in the hands of voters.

Abortion rights groups in the state are likely to succeed in their goal of putting a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would create a “fundamental right” to receive abortion care up until fetal viability, or about the 24th week of pregnancy.

If voters approved the ballot measure, it would effectively undo the 1864 ban that now remains law in the state. It would bar the state from restricting abortion care in situations where the health or life of the pregnant person is at risk after the point of viability, according to the treating health care professional.

That ballot effort is one of at least 11 across the country that seek to put the issue directly in the hands of voters — a move that has the potential to significantly boost turnout for Democratic candidates emphasizing the issue. 

In 2024, that could factor heavily into the outcome of both the presidential and U.S. Senate races in Arizona. Biden, whose campaign is leaning heavily into reproductive rights, won the state by just over 10,000 votes four years ago. And the Senate race features a tough battle to fill the seat held by the retiring independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, most likely between Democrat Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake. 

During her unsuccessful 2022 run for governor in Arizona, Lake said she supported the 1864 law, calling it “ a great law that’s already on the books .” But Lake now says she opposes the 1864 law , as well as a federal abortion ban, while also acknowledging that her own views regarding state policy conflict with some voters’ preferences.

In a statement following the decision, Lake said she opposed the ruling, adding that "it is abundantly clear that the pre-statehood law is out of step with Arizonans." She called on state lawmakers to "come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support."

"Ultimately, Arizona voters will make the decision on the ballot come November," she added. 

Gallego, who is backed by several reproductive rights groups, has said he supports the ballot measure. As a member of the U.S. House, he is among the co-sponsors of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would create federal abortion protections.

In a video posted to X after the ruling, Gallego said he would, with reproductive rights supporters, "fight all the way to November so we can get abortion rights back for women in Arizona."

Other Republicans in the state who’d previously expressed robust support for Roe being overturned joined Lake in condemning the ruling. Reps. Juan Ciscomani and David Schweikert , who both face tough re-elections this fall, both called on state lawmakers to address the issue “immediately.”

The ruling Tuesday — the second in a swing state on the issue in as many weeks — further highlights the already prominent role abortion rights will play in Arizona and across the country.

Last week, the Florida Supreme Court upheld a 15-week ban on abortion in the state, which effectively meant that a six-week abortion ban, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the woman, that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law last year will take effect. The state's high court also allowed a proposed amendment that would enshrine abortion protections in the state constitution to appear on the November ballot.

Tuesday's decision, while jarring to reproductive rights groups, wasn’t entirely unexpected. All seven justices on the Arizona Supreme Court were appointed by Republican governors, and during opening arguments in December, they aggressively, but civilly, quizzed attorneys on both sides about the fact that the 15-week ban enacted last year did not feature any language making clear whether it was designed to repeal or replace the 1864 ban.

Only six justices participated in Tuesday’s decision, however, after Justice Bill Montgomery — who previously accused Planned Parenthood of practicing “generational genocide” — recused himself. (The court’s chief justice did not appoint another judge to take the spot, which is an option under Arizona law.)

The abortion landscape in Arizona has been uniquely confusing since Roe v. Wade was overturned. 

While the 1864 law had been on hold after the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe decision, then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, successfully sued in 2022 to have that injunction lifted following the overturning of Roe, putting the ban back into effect — though a higher court put that ruling on hold. 

But after Mayes succeeded Brnovich as attorney general, she announced that she would not enforce the 1864 ban.

That led to suits from anti-abortion groups seeking enforcement of the ban, which ultimately led to the case making its way up to the state Supreme Court.
