When you travel abroad, there are a lot of things you’ll need to remember. From understanding customs and import restrictions to taking a pet abroad, this guide will provide you with all the important information you need to know. With these handy travel tips , you can make sure your next trip abroad is a safe and enjoyable one!

To start your holiday in the best way possible, you’re going to want to find the cheapest available flights. There are a number of different ways you can do this, including:

  • The ITA Matrix – This search tool will help you to find the cheapest tickets and work out an itinerary, which is particularly useful if your route is complex.
  • Google Flights – This is a fantastic tool created by Google that can save you time and energy when searching for flights. It allows you to do a basic flight search; discover destinations by entering dates, places, or interests; explore their destination map to see flights all over the country you’re traveling to; and save flights so you can compare them (great if you’re switching between devices).

Even though it’s unlikely that anything will happen while you’re on holiday, it’s best to prepare for all eventualities. There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for an emergency:

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program – Run by the U.S. government, this is a free online service that will let you know if there are any family emergencies back in the U.S. while you’re abroad. It will also update you if there are any crises in the area where you’re traveling.
  • Fill in your passport details – Make sure you’ve filled out the emergency information in your passport and signed it.
  • Leave a copy of your passport and itinerary with family or friends – This can help them contact you if there’s an emergency. It’s also worth leaving copies of your credit cards, airline tickets and any traveler’s checks that you may have .
  • Check you have the right travel insurance.  Speak to your insurance provider to make sure your medical insurance covers you overseas , and that you’re covered for any emergency expenses, e.g. medical evacuation. Don’t forget to check your credit cards to see which ones include travel insurance.
  • Keep valuables out of sight – Even if you’re traveling to a relatively safe area, it’s important that you keep all of your valuables out of sight when in public. Don’t carry too much money on you, and never leave your bag unattended.

Customs and Border Patrol - Use Global Entry

You will find that different countries have different policies when it comes to what you can bring into and take out of the country. It’s crucial that you’ve familiarized yourself with these before you go, and you can check with the foreign embassy of any country you’re traveling to just to be sure. Common restrictions include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Precious metals, including gold
  • Ivory jewelry
  • Religious artifacts
  • Animal skins
  • Electronic equipment that hasn’t been declared when you arrive
  • Precious and semi-precious stones
  • Fresh produce
  • Untreated wooden products
  • Certain medications, even if they are prescribed

Travelers that don’t abide by the custom and import laws of a country may have the item confiscated, and they may also be fined. In some more serious cases, prison sentences can be issued.

When returning to the U.S., there are also restrictions as to what you can bring back with you. These rules have been put in place to enforce laws that have been introduced by various agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Items to be aware of include:

  • The majority of coral items, either in jewelry or chunks
  • Most caiman or crocodile leather
  • Feather products and feathers from wild birds
  • Marine mammal furs
  • Spotted cat furs
  • Ivory that is under 100 years old. You will need to provide documentation to prove that any ivory you have purchased is older than this. The same goes for other antiques that contain wildlife parts
  • Products made from sea turtles

It’s important that you check with the embassy of the country you are traveling to before you take your pet abroad. A lot of countries will have restrictions on whether you can bring your pet to their country. Equally, if there is a state of emergency and you’re evacuated from the country, pets won’t always be permitted in the carrier (except service animals like guide dogs), so this is always worth bearing in mind too. For most places, your pets will need to be up to date with all their vaccinations, and all pet identification will need to be in order.

Before traveling, you should visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website to find out what potential health precautions you need to take in the country you are traveling to. This will include whether you should take any precautions with the food or water. It will also detail whether you need any vaccinations before you travel there.

If you are traveling with an existing medical condition, you should carry a letter from your physician. Detail what prescription medications you are taking and details of the condition you are suffering from. You should also check with the foreign embassy of your destination to see if there are any restrictions on your prescription medication.

Finally, always pack necessary medication in your hand luggage in case you lose your suitcase, and if you wear glasses, try to pack a spare pair.

Global Entry - Save Time At The Airport

To help reduce the amount of time people must queue at airports for security checks, the U.S. government created the Global Entry Program . For low-risk travelers entering the U.S., this reduces their wait time by granting them pre-approved clearance. It’s available at more than 42 different airports, with 50,000 new applications per month and nearly 2 million people currently enrolled. There are also 9 other countries that are now part of this program:

  • United Kingdom
  • South Korea
  • Canada (through the alternate NEXUS program )
  • Germany (through their EasyPASS program )
  • Netherlands

This pre-approved entry can save you hours at an airport, and since all of the forms are electronic, you don’t have to fill in lots of paperwork. You’ll just need to be added to the traveler database through a Global Entry application. Then, when you travel, you’ll need to take your passport (or permanent residency card) with you to one of the airport’s Global Entry kiosks. There, you’ll provide your fingerprints and your passport before filling out an electronic customs declaration card. Once this is done you’ll be given a piece of paper which will tell you to see an agent at the booth or proceed to the baggage claim area.

To be eligible, you need to have:

  • No criminal convictions, pending warrants, or criminal charges
  • No violations on customs, immigration, or agriculture relations
  • No current ongoing investigations with you as the subject
  • An admission into the U.S. under immigration regulation
  • Proof that you’re low-risk

There are certain groups that will need to take additional precautions when traveling abroad. Here are some of them and what you should look out for:

Students: When traveling, college students need to be aware of what laws there are in certain countries. Though most students enjoy safe trips, there are cases of students being arrested for underage drinking, public intoxication, and drunk driving. Be extra vigilant in foreign countries, and be sure to adhere to the rules in place.

LGBT: Persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) may find differing attitudes toward them in different countries, just as in different U.S. states. Try to do thorough research before you travel so you can be prepared for what tolerances are in the country you’re traveling to.

Older Americans: Before embarking on your journey, consult your physician. Take into consideration what the climate is like where you’re going in case this could affect your health. Don’t try to cram too much into your holiday itinerary!

Traveling With a Disability: Accessibility for disabled travelers will be different wherever you go. Some countries will have laws in place to protect disabled travelers, while others won’t. There’s a handy guide at Transportation.gov which covers various rules and guides relating to disabilities and aviation. Always plan ahead, consulting your physician about your trip and checking for the right accessibility at your hotel.

Hot Tip: We’ve also published an Ultimate Guide to Air Travel with a Disability with tons of information related to this topic.

Travel Visa Requirements - Know the 4 Types of Visa

Entry requirements will likely differ depending on your destination and home country. Some places may just accept your passport, while others may require a visa . To make sure you have the correct documentation, visit the embassy’s website to see what is required. You can also find country specific information here .

Visas: If you do require a visa, you will have to obtain this from the relevant foreign consular representative before you can visit this country. Always allow plenty of time to get this visa, as obtaining it may require visiting your local consular office. Once you’ve received it, make sure you check for any mistakes.

Work and Residency Permits: If you’re planning on working in the country you are traveling to, you will need to check to see if you’ll need any special documentation to do this. Check with a consulate in the U.S. or the country’s embassy.

In the unlikely event that there’s a crisis while you are traveling, there are several things you can do:

Getting Assistance From American Consulates: There are over 260 foreign service posts where U.S. consular officers are located, with others located in 46 foreign cities that don’t have a U.S. embassy. They are on hand if any crises occur, like a natural disaster or political upheaval. During this time, they’ll help to locate Americans who are missing and will assist in getting them back to the U.S.

They’re also there to help give you advice if you find yourself in financial trouble, need medical or legal advice, or you have an emergency, such as a death or arrest.

If You’re a Victim of Crime: Consular officers are there to help assist you if you become a victim of crime while traveling. They’ll help to:

  • Replace a passport that’s been stolen
  • Contact family, friends, and employers
  • Get you the appropriate medical care
  • Organize any other emergency needs that arise
  • Provide you with information about the criminal justice program in this area, what resources there are for victims, as well as compensation programs
  • Get a list of local attorneys who speak English

If You’re a Victim of Passport Fraud: If you are worried that you’ve lost your passport or it has been stolen, contact the nearest American embassy or consulate, or a passport agency in the U.S.

If You’re Arrested While Abroad: Because you’re in a foreign country, you will have to adhere to their rules. If these rules are broken, American officials may be limited as to how they can help you. However, they will be able to provide you with a list of attorneys and help you contact your family at home. They can also help you get money from your family in the U.S. and will monitor the conditions you are being held in as well as your health and welfare.

As soon as you have been arrested, you should ask to speak to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, or a consular officer. You are entitled to this.

If a U.S. Citizen Dies While Abroad: Over 6,000 Americans die while they’re abroad each year, with a lot of these living overseas. However, it’s important you know what to do in this worst case scenario. When this happens, a consular office will:

  • Confirm the death, U.S. citizenship, and identity of the deceased
  • Notify the next-of-kin if necessary. They’ll also provide them with information about the deceased’s location and help advise on what funding is available
  • Prepare documents for disposition of the remains, as instructed by the legal representative or next-of-kin before overseeing this
  • Send signed copies of the Consular Report of Death of an American Citizen Abroad to the legal representative or next-of-kin

If you are caught with illegal drugs on your person in a foreign country, you will be subject to their laws, not those you find in the U.S. Several hundred Americans have drug charges brought against them each year, and the process of drug arrests can be very different from what they are in the U.S. For example:

  • A jury trial isn’t provided in most countries
  • A pre-trial release on bail isn’t permitted in most countries
  • Pre-trial detention can last for several months, and will often be in solitary confinement
  • Prisons may be missing some comforts, including washbasins, toilets, and beds
  • Inadequate diets are often found, and friends and relatives have to provide supplements
  • English may not be spoken by the officials
  • Extortion, degrading treatment, confiscation of property, and physical abuse are possible
  • Convictions may range from fines to jail time, while some countries sentence people to years of hard labor and even the death penalty
  • Drug trafficking and drug possession penalties are often the same abroad

Taking Money and Credit Cards Abroad

There are a number of different ways you can take money with you abroad, and it’s normally worth combining several of these methods (as opposed to just taking lots of cash with you).

  • Credit Cards: These are ideal for larger purchases such as restaurant meals, car rentals, hotel bills and airline tickets. You’re more likely to get a better exchange rate when you pay by credit card than change cash at a change bureau. You’ve also got the added bonus of gaining travel points with many of these cards.
  • Debit Cards: Again, these types of cards can often provide you with good exchange rates. With a lot of ATMs available all over the world, withdrawing cash in the local currency can be easy.
  • Cash: It’s also worth carrying some cash on you when you’re traveling abroad, just in case the establishment you’re visiting doesn’t accept cards or checks. If you’re staying a long way from a town, having some cash to get by until you visit there again will be helpful. It’s important that you don’t carry too much cash on you at any time, though, and you should leave any spare cash in the safe at your hotel if you can. Don’t flash around your cash in public, as this could make you an easy target for thieves.
  • Traveler’s Cheques and Prepaid Cards: These are a secure alternative to cash, and are perfect as a backup if you can’t find an ATM or the one nearest you is out of service. If these are lost or stolen, they can normally be replaced within 24 hours.

Should you find yourself in an unforeseen circumstance and temporarily destitute, U.S. consuls can assist you. In this situation, you should contact your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, or the State Department’s Office of Overseas Citizens Services.

Consular officers can help you contact your family, bank, or employer to arrange for funds to be transferred . Sometimes, these can be wired through the Department of State.

The following resources are provided to assist you in the event of an emergency:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Victims of crime
  • Natural disasters
  • Parental child abductions
  • Missing persons
  • Lost or stolen passports

Part of the fun of traveling is the sense of adventure that stems from facing the unknown as we break away from our familiar surroundings and routine daily grind.

Unforeseen circumstances can always pop up during our travels, and a hardened traveler is simply someone who has learned to improvise when faced with these surprises.

Following well-established “best travel practices” and being aware of what to look out for when traveling are skills that grow with experience. Stay aware, be savvy, keep safety first, and enjoy your travels!

First and foremost, check the validity of your passport. Make sure it is not about to expire and that it meets the requirements of your destination country. Some countries may require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. It’s always a good idea to have a few photocopies of your passport stored separately in case of loss or theft.

Next, research and familiarize yourself with the visa requirements of your destination. Depending on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit, you may need to apply for a visa in advance. Some countries offer visa-on-arrival services, while others may require you to obtain a visa prior to travel. It’s essential to check the embassy or consulate website of the country you plan to visit for the most up-to-date information.

Budget-Friendly Tips for International Travel

Traveling the world can be an exciting and fulfilling experience, but it can also be expensive. However, there are several budget-friendly tips that can help you save money while still enjoying the wonders of international travel.

Research and Book in Advance

One of the key ways to save money on international travel is to research and book your flights and accommodations well in advance. Airlines and hotels often offer discounted rates for early bookings, allowing you to secure the best deals. Additionally, keeping an eye out for flash sales and promotions can help you score even more significant savings on your travel expenses.

Consider Alternative Transportation Options

While flying may be the most convenient option for long-distance travel, it may not always be the most cost-effective. Consider exploring alternative transportation options such as train travel or budget airlines. Trains can offer scenic routes and a more immersive travel experience, while budget airlines often have lower fares compared to major carriers.

Compare Prices for Activities, Attractions, and Dining

When planning your itinerary, take the time to research and compare prices for activities, attractions, and dining options at your destination. Look for discounts, package deals, or free activities that can help you make the most of your travel budget. Eating at local eateries or street food stalls can also be a more affordable way to taste the local cuisine without breaking the bank.

Stay in Budget-Friendly Accommodations

Accommodation can often be one of the most significant expenses when traveling. Consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations such as hostels, guesthouses, or vacation rentals. These options can provide a more affordable alternative to traditional hotels while still offering comfortable and convenient lodging options.

By following these budget-friendly tips, you can experience the joys of international travel without breaking the bank. Remember to plan ahead, compare prices, and be open to alternative options to make the most of your travel budget. Happy travels!

Travelling the World with a Family

Travelling the world with a family requires careful planning and consideration. It is important to choose family-friendly destinations that offer a variety of activities and accommodations suitable for children. Researching and booking accommodations that cater to families, such as resorts or vacation rentals, can help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Additionally, planning age-appropriate activities and attractions can create memorable experiences for the whole family.

When travelling with children, it is crucial to consider their needs and preferences. Look for destinations that offer a range of activities suitable for different age groups. For example, theme parks, zoos, and interactive museums can be great options for families with younger children. Older children might enjoy adventure sports, hiking, or cultural experiences. By choosing destinations and activities that cater to everyone’s interests, you can ensure that your family’s travel experience is enjoyable for all.

Choosing Family-Friendly Accommodations

Booking accommodations that are family-friendly is essential for a successful trip. Look for hotels or resorts that offer amenities such as children’s play areas, swimming pools, and babysitting services. Vacation rentals can also be a great option, as they often provide more space and a kitchen, allowing you to prepare meals for your family. Researching and reading reviews from other families can help you find accommodations that meet your needs.

Planning age-appropriate activities and attractions is key to creating memorable experiences for the whole family. Researching and making a list of attractions and activities that cater to different age groups can help you plan your itinerary. Consider everyone’s interests and try to include a mix of educational, cultural, and recreational activities. This way, your family can learn and have fun together while exploring new destinations. Remember to also leave some downtime for relaxation and spontaneous adventures.

How to Plan a Round-the-World Trip

Planning a round-the-world trip requires careful consideration and knowledge of airline alliances and ticket options. By utilizing round-the-world tickets offered by airline networks like Star Alliance, OneWorld, and Skyteam, travelers can combine multiple airlines under one ticket, allowing for a seamless and efficient journey. These tickets have specific regulations, such as the number of miles or continents visited. Therefore, it is crucial to research and compare prices to ensure the best value for your trip.

Alternatively, travelers can seek assistance from travel agents or third-party websites specializing in creating customized round-the-world itineraries based on individual preferences and budget. These experts can provide guidance on the best routes, destinations, and stopovers to maximize the travel experience.

When planning a round-the-world trip, considering factors beyond flights is also essential. Accommodation, transportation, and visas are crucial aspects to address. Researching and booking accommodations in advance can help secure preferred options and potentially save money. Exploring alternative transportation options, such as trains or budget airlines, can provide additional flexibility and cost savings throughout the journey.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, it is recommended to stay updated on visa requirements for each destination included in the itinerary. Some countries may require advance visa applications or have specific entry restrictions. It is advisable to consult with relevant embassies or consulates to obtain accurate and up-to-date information.

Tips for Planning a Round-the-World Trip:

  • Research and compare round-the-world ticket options offered by airline alliances.
  • Consider utilizing the services of travel agents or third-party websites for customized itineraries.
  • Plan accommodations and transportation in advance to secure preferred options.
  • Stay updated on visa requirements and entry restrictions for each destination.

How to Travel Abroad

Last Updated: May 25, 2023

This article was co-authored by Amy Tan . Amy Tan is a Travel Planner and the Founder of Planet Hoppers, a boutique travel design team founded in 2002. Planet Hoppers specializes in brainstorming and creating itineraries for dream vacations, honeymoons, exotic adventures, family reunions, and group trips. Amy earned a BA in Communications and a BS in Physics from the University of California, Davis in 2000. This article has been viewed 67,788 times.

Traveling abroad can be a strikingly simple endeavor when you're prepared. Do your research and study the destination; plan your itinerary and arrange the logistics; and pack for the weather, culture, and activities that you expect. Read on for more specific tips on successfully traveling abroad.

Researching a Destination

Step 1 Do your research.

  • Don't be afraid to rip it up and staple together only the pieces you need. A well-kept guidebook might make a nice souvenir, but it may not be worth the extra weight of carrying around information that you don't need.

Amy Tan

Allyson Edwards

"Download Google Maps for the area you’ll be traveling while you have WiFi," adds travel expert Allyson Edwards. "You can then use it offline in case you’re stuck in a remote area and need to navigate your way back."

Step 6 Be aware of common scams in your destination.

  • The infamous #64 bus in Rome, for instance, is popular with pickpockets because it's the only bus in Rome that hits all of the popular tourist destinations. It's usually packed with tourists, and thick with thieves.
  • Know what each local coin and bill is worth. For example, in Panama, everything is tied to the US dollar, so money comes in the same size, denomination, and material. In the UK, you'll find 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, and £2 coins, as well as 5, 10, 20, and 50 pound notes. By knowing your denominations and specifying how much you are handing over, you can help avoid another common scam: intentionally incorrect change.

Planning Your Itinerary

Step 1 Prepare your travel documents.

Keep a copy of your passport somewhere safe. Allyson Edwards, travel expert, tells us from experience: "A paper, color photocopy of your passport is valid about 99% of the places you’d otherwise use a driver’s license. When I got my drivers license stolen abroad, I used a copy of that in lieu of my U.S. driver’s license when I went to bars or went shopping."

Step 2 Look into vaccine requirements.

  • Think about staying in an apartment if you'll be in one place for more than half a week. Hotels can be expensive, and you can often get much better deals renting someone's home. Furthermore, this approach might give you a more authentic idea of what it's like to live in a given city.
  • Consider a Bed and Breakfast or a self-service vacation rental. This last type of accommodation can help save money, as they're often cheaper than hotels, and you'll save money by buying your groceries and cooking there instead of going out to eat.

Step 5 Figure out how you're going to get around.

  • Trains can be relaxing over long distances. Consider taking night trains – in theory, you can sleep on the train and awake as the train pulls into your next destination!
  • If you plan to rent a car, look into insurance requirements. Consider applying for your international driver's license.
  • Ferries are a solid option for crossing water. They are usually cheaper than another plane ticket, with better food.

Step 6 Don't take animals, plants or anything else that's not accepted on flights.

Packing Effectively

Step 1 Make a list a few weeks before the trip.

  • If you are still struggling with what to pack, you can find an online rough guide with the essentials and basics. When you are all packed, take out you passport and any other travelling documents and keep them with you in a separate bag with your purse/wallett and phone, so it all stays together.

Step 2 Pack efficiently

  • A few classic pieces that are easily mixed and matched and a knowledge of how to use the local laundromat can save you money on overweight baggage fees.
  • Know the common dress codes for your destination. For example, if you're visiting the Vatican, women will need their shoulders covered.

Step 3 Research airline regulations for what you can pack.

US issues level 3 travel advisory to China amid safety concerns. Here's what to know

travel abroad.com

Are you thinking about traveling to China to visit or study abroad? The U.S. government suggests reconsidering your trip for now.

According to the U.S. Department of State , traveling to China is under a level 3 travel advisory , warning Americans to reconsider. The State Department has four warning levels. The fourth is “Do not travel.”

Is it safe to travel to China right now?

The U.S. is asking Americans to reconsider traveling to China due to various reasons, including concerns about health and safety, such as the prevalence of contagious diseases like COVID-19, as well as political tensions or security risks in certain regions.

As of April 12, there are some specific areas that the U.S. is asking people to reconsider travel to. Those areas include:

  • Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bans and the risk of wrongful detentions.
  • Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong SAR due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
  • Reconsider travel to the Macau SAR due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services.

Additionally, the U.S. government may issue travel advisories based on factors like civil unrest, natural disasters, or other hazards that could affect travelers' well-being.

Americans detained in China

Mark Swidan — a man from Houston, Texas — has been detained in China for over 10 years on drug charges. According to The Texas Tribune , Swidan was detained in China in 2012 while on a trip looking for materials for his home and business in Houston. Chinese authorities arrested him after his driver and translator were found in possession of drugs. The driver blamed Swidan, who is accused of trafficking and manufacturing methamphetamine.

A review of Swidan’s case said there were no drugs on him or in his hotel. Last year, the Republic of China’s Jiangmen Intermediate Court denied Swidan’s appeal and upheld his death penalty with a two-year suspended death sentence.

Other Americans considered wrongfully detained include Chinese American businessman Kai Li from Long Island, N.Y., and California pastor David Lin.

What countries have a Level 3 travel warning?

  • Trinidad & Tobago
  • El Salvador
  • South Sudan
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Saudi Arabia

What countries have a Level 4 travel warning?

  • Afghanistan
  • Central African Republic
  • North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)
  • Burkina Faso

Traveling abroad? Here are some safety tips

U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the State Department’s free  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  and to prepare contingency plans for emergencies.

Safety tips if you're traveling outside the U.S.:

  • Don't travel alone.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.

Family Guy 's Gary Janetti to Publish New Essay Collection About Adventures Abroad: ‘You’re Welcome’ (Exclusive)

The writer’s latest book delves into his experiences traveling abroad

 Benjamin Askinas, Harper

Gary Janetti is reflecting on the ups and downs of travel in a new book. The writer and producer, 58, has shared, exclusively with PEOPLE, that his new essay collection is on the way. We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay will be published this summer by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins. Janetti is taking readers on a romp through his worldwide travels in his latest publication. The writer will reflect on the “absurdity and glory” of his trips abroad, including a transformative stay at an Italian spa taken with his husband, celebrity stylist Brad Goreski , a family cruise on the famous Queen Mary 2 and a memorable dinner with Dame Maggie Smith .

The book will also feature the author’s meditations on places like Australia and Mykonos, as well as his own personal travel tips, like how to pack and get trip updates. Janetti will also dole out his personal restaurant recommendations.  Janetti is known for his work as a writer and producer on shows like Family Guy and Will & Grace . His viral Instagram captions, some of which imagined the inner monologues of Royal family members like Prince George , led to the 2021 premiere of his HBO show The Prince .

Janetti published his first essay collection, bestseller Do You Mind If I Cancel? , in 2019. The book detailed his young adulthood in New York, and his time working in a hotel. “It was the first time I was writing personally about myself, as opposed to writing through a character,” Janetti previously told PEOPLE of the book. “You have a bit of a distance — you’re protected by the [characters].” Janetti published his second essay collection, Start Without Me , in 2022.

We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay is poised to make the perfect travel companion, though Janetti says the book will still serve its purpose even if you’re staying home this summer.

"I spent the last year traveling and then wrote a book about it,” he tells PEOPLE of his latest collection. “Now you can go to all those places without having to leave your house. You're welcome."

5 facts about presidential travel abroad

American presidents and other world leaders frequently travel internationally, most commonly for conferences and bilateral meetings. This face-to-face diplomacy can offer insights into political priorities, partnerships and tensions, as well as key international issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted international travel in 2020 and 2021, but diplomatic travel picked up significantly in 2022. Here are five facts about presidential travel abroad:

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to examine the international travel history of recent U.S. presidents and other heads of government through Jan. 20, 2023.

Dates and destinations of U.S. presidential travel prior to 2021 are from the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Historian, which has recorded international presidential travel since 1901. Travel data for 2021 and 2022 was compiled from White House press briefings. Information on visits to Ukraine by other world leaders were independently verified through official government websites.

Only trips where the head of government met face-to-face with another head of government are included. For example, Biden’s trip to the UK for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is excluded as Biden did not hold any diplomatic meetings with the British prime minister or other world leaders. Visiting leaders were only counted if they were the head of government at the time of their visit. Depending on the country’s political system, “head of government” could mean president or prime minister, but not both. Heads of state, monarchs and interim leaders are excluded from the visiting leaders count.

U.S. President Joe Biden has traveled internationally less frequently than his last two predecessors did. Biden traveled to 17 places outside the United States in his first two years in office, visiting some more than once. He made six international trips in 2021, all of them to Europe. In 2022, he made 12 trips, including to Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. And in early 2023, Biden traveled to Mexico for the North American Leaders’ Summit.

A table showing the destination and reason for Biden's international travel, two years into his presidency.

All told, Biden’s international visit count trails those of former Presidents Donald Trump, who made 23 international trips to 20 places during his first two years in office, and Barack Obama, who made 32 trips to 24 places in the first two years of his presidency.

Biden’s first presidential trip abroad was to the United Kingdom, while Trump’s was to Saudi Arabia and Obama’s was to Canada. A president’s first trip is often used to signal the importance of a strategic alliance. On his trip to the UK in June 2021, Biden reaffirmed the U.S.-UK partnership and committed to close cooperation throughout his presidency. Typically, U.S. presidents visit a close ally on their inaugural trip: Canada was the first international destination for both Obama and Bill Clinton, while Mexico was the first destination for George W. Bush.

U.S. presidents have visited the UK the most in the past decade – a total of eight times. American presidents have worked closely with their British counterparts over the past decade, cooperating on issues from defense and counterterrorism to climate policy . Travel to the UK has largely centered around conferences and summits, but in 2019, Trump made a ceremonial state visit to the UK .

A world map showing that U.S. presidents have visited the UK the most in the past decade - eight times in all.

In the past decade of presidential travel, Belgium (home to NATO headquarters ), France, Germany and Japan are the second-most visited destinations, at six times each.

So far, Biden has made the most trips to the UK and Belgium – two each. (Biden’s additional visit to the UK to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is not included in this count, since he did not hold any diplomatic appointments.) Just as these two European allies stand out in Biden’s presidential travel thus far, France stands out in Trump’s administration and Germany stands out in Obama’s – they visited those respective countries four times while in office.

Biden is among 38 heads of government who have visited Ukraine since the beginning of the war there. Biden traveled to Kyiv as part of a surprise trip in February, days before the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion .

While many heads of government visiting Ukraine have come from neighboring countries or countries in Europe (such as Poland’s prime minister, who has visited five times since the beginning of the war) that is not always the case. For example, Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei and Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló traveled to Ukraine in July 2022 and October 2022, respectively.

Biden hosted 28 heads of government at the White House as of the end of 2022. Foreign leaders come to the U.S. for events including conferences, summits and bilateral meetings. Among those to visit the White House in 2021 and 2022 were then-Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson of Sweden, who met with Biden to submit her country’s application for NATO membership ; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who traveled to the White House on his first known wartime trip abroad ; and French President Emmanuel Macron, whose trip marked the first state visit of Biden’s presidency . In fact, the president of France has been the first leader to make a state visit to the U.S. for the past three presidential terms, with Macron visiting Trump in April 2018 and his predecessor, François Hollande, visiting Obama in February 2014. In April 2023, Biden hosted the second state visit of his administration , meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

  • I was excited to study abroad in Florence and to take small, cheap trips while abroad.
  • My classmates are not traveling cheaply; they are flying to luxury places like Dubai and the Alps.
  • I wonder if they are just doing it for social media, but I'm still enjoying my time abroad.

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.

A Guide to Adventure Travel

What better way to add a serious helping of adventure to your life than by going abroad? Sure, you can find adventure at home, but the best adventure tours will exist far outside your comfort zone. Surfing at Bondi Beach? Ziplining through the rainforest canopy in Costa Rica? Hiking to Everest Base Camp? The ideal adventure will leave you smarter, more fulfilled, more worldly, and (of course) wanting more. Here’s everything you need to know to have the adventure of a lifetime abroad!

What is adventure travel?

Adventure travel is a type of meaningful travel that revolves around exploration, whether that be the adrenaline-junkie type (like bungee jumping and hang-gliding) or the slower, more intentional type (like homestays and cultural immersion).

Typically speaking, adventure tourism activities include a physically challenging element, cultural exchange, and/or the opportunity to get up close and personal with Mother Nature herself.

How to go on an adventure

Believe it or not, it’s actually not that difficult to go on an adventure tour. You just have to know where to want to go and when, and the rest will fall into place! Here’s how to find the best adventure travel for you:

  • Figure out what you want to do. Before you peruse adventure travel companies, decide what you want to do on your adventure—because there’s a lot of possibilities! Whether it’s an extended hiking trip, water sports, cultural heritage tours, or a spiritual retreat at an ecolodge, it’s important to set goals and intentions for your adventure.
  • Pick a destination. There are tons of destination options for many kinds of adventure tourism activities. For other kinds, like seeing glow worms or the Northern Lights, your options will be a bit more limited. Once you know what you want to do, you can choose your destination based on the best or safest location to do that activity, or you can throw caution to the wind and go wherever the wind blows you!
  • When do you want to go? Are you looking for summer adventures or winter wonders? Don’t forget that the seasons are different depending on what hemisphere you’re headed to, and that adventure activities get considerably more expensive during tourist seasons.
  • Solo or group travel? Maybe you want to pursue adventure in solitude, or maybe you’ll feel better having a group to share the experience with. Either way, going alone or with other people will shape your adventure travel experience, so it’s important to decide what the right choice is for you.
  • Apply for your program. After you’ve figured out all of the above, it’s time to start finding the perfect program for you! Of course, you can plan and take your trip without the help of adventure travel companies. However, if you’re a first-time traveler, or your intended destination is completely unfamiliar to you, it may be a good idea to go on an adventure through an organization that has experience in the activities you’re looking for. You don’t want to get in over your head, or have your trip ruined due to circumstances you may not have known to prepare for.

Where are the best places for adventure?

If you’re wondering where to go on an adventure, spin the globe and point! In other words, you can find adventure literally anywhere . However, if you really want an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life, it’s not a bad idea to push yourself as far out of your comfort zone as reasonably possible.

That could mean going somewhere where you don’t speak the language, confronting one of your phobias, or trying your hand at something you never thought you would. But if you really want names, some of the most renowned countries in the world for fun, reputable adventures include New Zealand, Australia, Costa Rica, Peru, Thailand, Kenya, and South Africa.

Was the travel worth it? Beyoncé and Taylor Swift's summer concerts drew fans from afar

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.

With safety at the top of travelers' minds, the researchers also factored in the city’s safety rating out of 100.
