Year In Review: Top Travel News Stories Of 2023

From a remarkably cold winter and a new comet to the closure of an immensely popular UNESCO World Heritage Site, the past year in travel has seen some ups and downs. In 2023, we covered travel news that helped our readers hit the road while staying up to date. From travel warnings to potential brand-new national parks, our top travel news from 2023 showed us which topics interest our TravelAwaits readers the most.

Our most popular travel news stories from the U.S. occurred in Florida, but international news seemed to really concern our readers this past year, whether it was the closing of an ancient ruin in South America or celestial events occurring outside of Earth’s atmosphere.

Let’s take a second to look back at the travel news that piqued our readers’ interest the most this past year, and then look ahead at 2024.

Peru Closes Machu Picchu To Visitors

In late 2022, Peru’s President Pedro Castillo was impeached due to corruption. Spurring countrywide protests, the political issue caused civil unrest and forced the Ministry of Tourism to close the ancient Inca ruins of Machu Picchu — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Demonstrations near the ruins caused rail damage to nearby trains and forced the Cusco airport to suspend operations. The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for Peru and urged visitors to “exercise increased caution due to civil unrest.”

Luckily, the disruptions did not last very long and Machu Picchu was reopened on February 12, 2023.

Farmers’ Almanac Predicts Very Cold Winter In Canada

Our readers like to stay in the know regarding one specific topic over any other: the weather. Every year, the Farmers’ Almanac releases its extended weather forecast for the U.S. and Canada. From an unusually warm winter in 2022 to a sizzling summer in 2023, TravelAwaits readers proved once again that they’re interested in the weather.

This year, though, it wasn’t any of the U.S. forecasts that made the list of top travel news stories. Indeed, the Farmers’ Almanac Winter Weather Forecast for Canada is the next story on our list. While readers scoured to see the upcoming winter’s potential outcome, they were told that “The BRRR Is Back!” — not unlike the U.S. forecast .

According to Canada’s winter outlook — and this is still relevant for the upcoming 2024 winter — the eastern part of the country will be chilly and stormy with a “wintry mishmash.” The central region will be “bitterly cold,” and the west will be seasonally cold, or very cold, with snowfall and wetness.

“The Lyrid meteor shower occurs each year in April when Earth passes through the debris trail of a comet called C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered on April 5, 1861, by A. E. Thatcher,” said Jim Fulcher. “The comet takes 417 years to orbit the sun.”

One of several annual celestial events, the Lyrid meteor shower serves as an introduction to the springtime. Not specific to any region, the meteors are visible from anywhere that has dark skies and low levels of light pollution.

Orca May Return To Ocean After 50 Years In Captivity

One of the more somber stories on this list, Lolita from the Miami Seaquarium had heaps of hope this past April when it was announced she’d be returning to her home waters in the Pacific Northwest. In partnership with the seaquarium, an animal rights organization, and philanthropist Jim Irsay, Lolita was set to return sometime this year.

The original plan was for her to return during a gradual process so as to not aggravate her sickness, which was the main reason she was leaving the seaquarium in the first place. With even greater hopes to return to her mother — a 95-year-old killer whale still said to be living in Puget Sound waters — Lolita was supposed to live the rest of her life as a free creature. 

Unfortunately, Lolita was unable to complete the journey back to her original home and passed away in August. A heartwarming story that ended in sadness, it’s a stark reminder of the preciousness of endangered species worldwide.

Great White Sharks Located Near Swimmers Along California Coast

Just a few states below Lolita’s home waters in Washington State, another aquatic visitor made a splash this summer. Instead of killer whales, it was juvenile great white sharks that stirred up a commotion this time.

Thanks to a study from California State University Long Beach Shark Lab , “hotspots” of juvenile great whites were found in multiple areas near Southern California. Luckily, it was only juveniles reported to have been in these waters back in the summer; great whites are known as “juvenile” from birth to about 6 years old. 

“Juveniles like warm water and the safety of shallow areas for protection and access to their favorite food: sting rays on the shore line,” said TravelAwaits contributor Christy Karsten .

Popular Florida Spring Closed To Visitors For Six Months

Back to Florida for our next story about a beloved vacation excursion closing for over half the year — Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, Florida. Made up of Pretty, Big, and Little Sister Springs, the wildlife refuge was closed for a canal-stabilization project to improve the surrounding habitat for the springs’ native manatees.

Closed from April 1 until November 15, the project was calculated to start and end before the beginning of manatee mating season, which lasts from November to April. Located in a wetlands habitat in Kings Bay, Three Sisters Springs has since reopened to visitors.

Newly Discovered Comet Expected To Be Brighter Than Stars

Another celestial event on the list, the arrival of Comet/2023 A3 won’t occur again until later in 2024, but it deserved the early coverage for good reason.

Discovered this past February, the comet — otherwise known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS — takes 80,000 years to orbit the sun. Named after Purple Mountain in China, where the comet was first photographed, it “should be at its closest to Earth on October 13, 2024,” said Jim Fulcher, according to EarthSky .

U.S. Warns Tourists To Avoid Certain Areas Of Mexico

Not unlike the complications in Machu Picchu, early 2023 saw a lot of unrest in Mexico as well, but for even more dangerous reasons. When the story of American tourists kidnapped in Mexico, two of which were killed, made headline news, the U.S. State Department was quick to warn future visitors of Mexico’s potential dangers .

“Violent crime — such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery — is widespread and common in Mexico,” the State Department explains . “The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted. In many states, local emergency services are limited outside the state capital or major cities.”

Offering visitors various cautions in specific areas around Mexico, the State Department urged Americans not to travel to places like Colima and Sinaloa. Visitors were told to reconsider traveling to “Baja California (where Tijuana is located), Chihuahua, Guanajuato (where Guanajuato City is located), Jalisco state (home to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta), and Sonora.” 

While the State Department did not caution travel to all of Mexico, it wouldn’t be the first time civil unrest has led to a travel warning in America’s neighbor country to the south.  

The Dangerous Situation Happening In Cancun

Focused solely in the resort state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, February saw even more complications in Mexico as the result of a new rideshare policy in the area. 

“The problem is that taxi drivers, who are protesting that Uber has begun operations in Quintana Roo, have repeatedly blocked the main road from the airport to Cancun’s Hotel Zone,” said TravelAwaits’ Jim Fulcher. “At other times, cab drivers have allegedly thrown rocks at Uber drivers, and fights have allegedly broken out between taxi and Uber drivers in the street.”

Taking away from local taxi drivers, a two-sided conflict arose, and tourists were in the crossfire, pushing the U.S. State Department to release yet another warning for people traveling to Mexico.

One of the first factors that was taken into consideration when assessing the various travel news sites was the quality of content, in particular, the writing style. While finding out important updates does not necessarily require articles to be written with literary flair, it helps to keep the reader interested and engaged in the content, especially when the piece is covering recommendations or a description of a trip to a certain location. Dry or dull writing can make readers lose interest half way through, potentially causing them to miss out on important information later on in the article. Similarly, those articles that lacked a variety of content, such as photos and videos, were also ranked lower as these are also more likely to lose users’ attention than the ones that feature relevant clips and images. Therefore, when we were assessing the various news sites, we looked at the writing style to ensure that we were only including those that had the ability to engage their readers.

Another factor that was considered was the comments section below articles and how interactive they were for users. Comments sections are great places for discussion of topics and can offer a range of different perspectives on one issue, often challenging the views of the article. By interactive, we mean how readers can then engage with comments from other readers, such as by leaving a ‘Like’ or ‘Dislike’, or simply just replying with their own thoughts. If enough people become involved in a discussion on a comments section, they can become much like travel forums , where people can gain useful information, ask questions and find out details from someone with first hand experience of an event or location. When a journalist is asked to write on a topic they may not know about in depth, having someone who has a deeper understanding can make the website more comprehensive than one that does not have a comments section. Hence, we looked at the ‘quality’ of comments sections when reviewing the various travel news sites to suggest ones that we felt added depth to the featured articles.

In a sense, these leads nicely onto the next factor that was assessed, which was the range of writers that are employed by each news site and the difference in perspective offered by each. Some newspapers and websites can often carry a bias that they try to impose on their readers, usually politically based. For example, while The Guardian features well-researched and interesting content from a number of journalists, each article tends to come with a left-leaning bias that can rub off on their readers. Reversely, the Daily Star adopts a right-wing perspective, meaning their articles will often slate countries with socialist governments and may attempt to dissuade its readers from visiting them. A better alternative is those sites that publish articles from a wide range of writers who come from a mix of backgrounds, political sentiments, religion, race, gender and age as it will undoubtedly produce a more well-rounded selection of content. When you are trying to find out about travelling to Russia, for example, you do not necessarily want to be told about all the ‘atrocities’ if it is coming from a source with a vested interest to make the country look bad, and vice versa.

Adverts were also taken into account when reviewing the travel news sites, especially those that were irrelevant to the topic of the articles. CNN Travel was one example of a website that although featuring interesting and engaging content, displayed ads down the side that had the potential to distract from the article, while advertising products that had nothing to do with travelling. Even worse than ad banners are sites that use pop-up adverts which appear in front of the article you are reading, giving you no choice but to cancel them. These can be very irritating and lead to users clicking on the pop-up by accident, taking them to a new website that they do not want to be on. That being said, with print newspapers largely moving towards online editions, they are suddenly losing out on the money that would usually have been received from people buying a copy. What was once paid for is now free, meaning they are forced to find a way to supplement the loss in revenue, hence the need for adverts. Nevertheless, there are more tactical ways of implementing them than pop-ups, while more relevant ones, such as advertising travel products, would be a much more useful than beauty products, for example.

Finally, we looked at the originality of the content and whether the site included first hand interviews and experiences, rather than just rewriting articles from other sources. TravelDailyNews stood out in particular for its inclusion of original interviews with industry experts, such as hotel owners, tour operating CEOs and travel technology experts, providing an insightful look into the world of travel from people with years, if not decades, of experience in the field. This differs from sources such as the the Daily Star, which focuses more on holiday mishaps and humorous airport stories over informative interviews. While accounts of mishaps can be entertaining, we considered sites that featured interesting interviews to be superior to those that did not include such content.

Overall, this list provides the best selection of travel news sites amongst hundreds of options, combining all of the above features to single out only the top seven. Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Aussies who are currently holidaying in Bali or plan to visit the holiday hotspot should allow for more travel time as Ramadan comes to an end in Indonesia.

While Bali is a majority Balinese Hindu province, the population is mostly Muslim and the Eid al-Fitr holiday is one of the biggest festivals on the calendar.

As such Aussies and tourists alike have been warned to allow for plenty of time to travel to and from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport with roads expected to be clogged as

the island celebrates the end of the Islamic holy month on April 9 and 10.

Smarttraveller Australia has warned Aussie holiday-makers to be prepared and “stay alert”.

“We’ve reviewed our advice for Indonesia and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution,” it states on the site.

“The Idul Fitri holiday period will take place between 10 – 22 April. Many people will travel throughout the country, including the greater Jakarta area.

“This may impact traffic and public transport, including airports, seaports, highways, toll roads, train and bus stations. Airports are expected to be busy. Plan your travel carefully and prepare for significant delays.”

The national holiday of Lebaran, also known as Hari Raya Eid al-Fitr, will be observed between April 9 and April 15 and the weekends on either side.

Handy Heryudhitiawan, the general manager of Bali’s main airport — I Gusti Ngurah Rai International — said the airport was “braced and ready” to welcome and support the crowds of Eid al-Fitr travellers.

The Bali Sun reported during the Eid al-Fitr festival Bali Airport is set to serve 473,000 domestic passengers and 538,000 international passengers, with the total number of passenger surpassing one million.

Has remote work changed how people travel in the U.S?

The prevalence of remote work since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly changed urban transportation patterns in the U.S., according to new study led by MIT researchers.

The research finds significant variation between the effects of remote work on vehicle miles driven and on mass-transit ridership across the U.S.

“A 1 percent decrease in onsite workers leads to a roughly 1 percent reduction in [automobile] vehicle miles driven, but a 2.3 percent reduction in mass transit ridership,” says Yunhan Zheng SM ’21, PhD ’24, an MIT postdoc who is co-author of a the study.

“This is one of the first studies that identifies the causal effect of remote work on vehicle miles traveled and transit ridership across the U.S.,” adds Jinhua Zhao, an MIT professor and another co-author of the paper.

By accounting for many of the nuances of the issue, across the lower 48 states and the District of Columbia as well as 217 metropolitan areas, the scholars believe they have arrived at a robust conclusion demonstrating the effects of working from home on larger mobility patterns.

The paper, “ Impacts of remote work on vehicle miles traveled and transit ridership in the USA ,” appears today in the journal Nature Cities . The authors are Zheng, a doctoral graduate of MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a postdoc at the Singapore–MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART); Shenhao Wang PhD ’20, an assistant professor at the University of Florida; Lun Liu, an assistant professor at Peking University; Jim Aloisi, a lecturer in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP); and Zhao, the Professor of Cities and Transportation, founder of the MIT Mobility Initiative, and director of MIT’s JTL Urban Mobility Lab and Transit Lab.

The researchers gathered data on the prevalence of remote work from multiple sources, including Google location data, travel data from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the National Transit Database, and the monthly U.S. Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes (run jointly by Stanford University, the University of Chicago, ITAM, and MIT).

The study reveals significant variation among U.S. states when it comes to how much the rise of remote work has affected mileage driven.

“The impact of a 1 percent change in remote work on the reduction of vehicle miles traveled in New York state is only about one-quarter of that in Texas,” Zheng observes. “There is real variation there.”

At the same time, remote work has had the biggest effect on mass-transit revenues in places with widely used systems, with New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia making up the top five hardest-hit metro areas.

The overall effect is surprisingly consistent over time, from early 2020 through late 2022.

“In terms of the temporal variation, we found that the effect is quite consistent across our whole study period,” Zheng says. “It’s not just significant in the early stage of the pandemic, when remote work was a necessity for many. The magnitude remains consistent into the later period, when many people have the flexibility to choose where they want to work. We think this may have long-term implications.”

Additionally, the study estimates the impact that still larger numbers of remote workers could have on the environment and mass transit.

“On a national basis, we estimate that a 10 percent decrease in the number of onsite workers compared to prepandemic levels will reduce the annual total vehicle-related CO2 emissions by 191.8 million metric tons,” Wang says.

The study also projects that across the 217 metropolitan areas in the study, a 10 percent decrease in the number of onsite workers, compared to prepandemic levels, would lead to an annual loss of 2.4 billion transit trips and $3.7 billion in fare revenue — equal to roughly 27 percent of the annual transit ridership and fare revenue in 2019.

“The substantial influence of remote work on transit ridership highlights the need for transit agencies to adapt their services accordingly, investing in services tailored to noncommuting trips and implementing more flexible schedules to better accommodate the new demand patterns,” Zhao says.

Containers being moved from ship to access the fallen Baltimore bridge's roadway

Recovery efforts at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse reached a "critical step" Sunday as crews began removing shipping containers from the vessel Dali.

Removal will allow them to access a key portion of the roadway, now perched above the containers on board the 980-foot, Singapore-flagged ship when it lost power and struck the bridge March 26.

“Removing containers allows for safe access to then remove the pieces of the Key Bridge that lie across the ship’s bow, taking weight off the ship and ultimately allowing for the movement of the ship," Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command said in a statement Sunday.

Unified Command is a cooperative of first responders, recovery crews, and agencies planning to redevelop the bridge and reopen the waterway. They include the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and various state agencies, such as Maryland State Police.

The bodies of three of six roadway workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed have been recovered, and the other three are presumed dead.

Moving the ship is important, as it would allow authorities to reopen the port to at least some traffic, officials said.

"The removal of these containers is a critical step required to safely move the [Merchant Vessel] Dali and eventually fully re-open the Fort McHenry Channel," Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command said in a statement Sunday.

Removal was being done with a floating crane, Unified Command said. Images it released Sunday also showed a section of bridge support that was being removed.

Officials are under pressure to rebuild the bridge, which carried an average of 34,000 vehicles a day. On Thursday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said on the social media platform X , “We cannot rebuild the bridge until we clear the wreckage.” 

Another key goal is restoring traffic to the Port of Baltimore, essentially shuttered since the collision, with 32 vessels getting through since then via temporary, alternate channels, Unified Command said.

The port, the top destination for imported cars shipped to the United States, accommodated roughly 500 container arrivals a year in recent years, according to trade tracker Kpler.

The Corps of Engineers said last week that it hopes to open a one-way shipping lane in the port by the end of April via a channel 280 feet wide and 35 feet deep. It also announced a larger goal: restoring full port traffic by the end of May via what it described as a "700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep federal navigation channel."

The bridge's collapse has blocked the Fort McHenry Channel and thus throttled nearly all traffic in and out of the port, though officials have found ways to move temporary traffic through the waterway.

The port exists where the Patapsco River meets the Chesapeake Bay.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
