What to Keep in Mind

Your questions, answered, why shop with us.

Whether you've had short hair your whole life or just went for the chop, finding a curling iron that works for your cut always poses a challenge. With less length to work with, you need to pay extra attention to the details, like temperature and rod shape . But most importantly, pick a barrel size that's on the thin side for the best results. If the barrel is too thick, you won't have much success getting any sort of wave or texture.

Even with these aspects to keep in mind, it can still be a headache to pick the best one for you. To help cut through the clutter, we scoured the shelves, put these tools to the test, and chatted with a few hair pros for their expert advice and recommendations. Whether you are looking to save a buck or splurge on something special, we have an option for you.

Best Overall

Hot tools gold curling iron.

Adjustable heat settings, even heat distribution, and a 360-degree swivel cord in a single, affordable tool? Sign us up.

Strands sometimes get caught in the clamp.

With high regards from hairstylists and beauty editors alike, this tool earned the top spot for its range of barrel sizes, adjustable heat settings, and oh-so-convenient swivel cord. The gold coating helps even out heat distribution for perfectly symmetrical curls from root to tip. Thanks to the multiple barrel sizes, curls of every size from beach waves to rigid ringlets are within reach.

One note: make sure to keep your strands away from the hinge of the clamp. Sometimes they can get caught.

Barrel Material: Titanium | Size: Seven available from 0.5–2 inches | Temperature Range: 280–430 degrees

Remington Pro Conical Curling Wand

This budget friendly option heats up in 30 seconds flat.

Be careful when using. It is easy to singe fingertips.

True story: Our tester has used this wand since 2013, and it still works like a charm. Best for creating tousled beach waves, this easy-on-the-wallet option bends your strands without breaking the bank. The cone-shaped barrel heats up in just 30 seconds, making it perfect for anyone with little time to get ready. Even the most stick-straight strands will be curled into submission after a few passes with this pearl-coated tool. Thanks to the slightly shorter rod, it won't be too cumbersome for your short strands.

We recommend employing the heat protective glove when using. It can be all too easy to burn fingertips with this one.

Barrel Material: Ceramic | Size: 1–1.5 inches | Temperature Range: 350–410 degrees

Best Splurge

Dyson airwrap.

This do-it-all option uses air to style hair, resulting in less damage and breakage after using.

It goes out of stock quickly. We wish it were more accessible.

Yes, your sticker shock is real and valid. $600 is a lot to shell out for a hair tool, but if that is in your budget, this may be the last hair tool you ever buy. Unlike some of the hair tools in your arsenal (we see you blowdryer), Dyson employs Coanda airflow instead of heat to style hair, resulting in less damage and less breakage. Curling is just one piece of the puzzle. Complete with six attachments (from a dryer to curling wands), this all-in-one dryer, curler, and blowout master offers any and every style.

Barrel Material: Ceramic tourmaline | Size: 1.2, 1.6 inches | Temperature Range: Not listed

Best Titanium

Ion titanium pro curling iron.

Sally Beauty

After one hour, this smart tool automatically shuts off.

While the temperature ranges from 300 - 450 degrees, you can only select four options between those levels.

While this iron is equipped with a clamp — which can be a challenge to correctly use and notoriously pulls hair — it delivers a snag-free style, so you can curl comfortably. Not to mention, its lightweight shape and design make it an easy item to stow away in your carry-on. But our favorite has to be the automatic shut-off after only an hour. Enjoy date night with peace of mind, because even if you didn't shut the curling iron off, it doesn't matter.

Barrel Material: Titanium | Size: 0.75–1.5 inches | Temperature Range: 300–450 degrees

Best Ceramic

Harry josh pro tools ceramic curling iron.

Whether you are partial to a wand, traditional clamp, or professional-style Marcel clamp, this iron offers all three.

While the extra clamps provide versatility, it can be tough to store.

Celebrity stylist, Harry Josh, is famous for styling every A-lister from Gwenyth Paltrow to Miranda Kerr and his iconic mint green hair tools. This 3-for-1 strand styler offers something for everyone. Hair glides easily through clamps for minimal snagging while the 360-degree swivel cord ensures you won't get tangled up while styling.

Barrel Material: Ceramic | Size: 1 inch | Temperature Range: 190–380 degrees

Best Rotating

Beachwaver co. pro 1-inch curling iron.

The rotating barrel makes curling super easy. Simply clamp hair toward the end, press the button, and let the iron do the work.

For those who have never used before, this iron can require a bit of a learning curve.

Beachy, runway-style waves have never been easier to recreate. Created by celebrity stylist, Sarah Potempa, this tool offers all the perks of a professional tool like high heat settings, a swivel cord, and an ergonomic handle while remaining consumer-friendly. The rotating barrel turns both left and right, and the tiny clamp holds down ends and wraps lengths around for easy, casual curls. Plus, with shorter strands, finishing your entire head won't take very long.

Barrel Material: Ceramic tourmaline | Size: 1 inch | Temperature Range: 310–450 degrees

BaBylissPro Curling Wand

For everything this wand offers, it is available at an accessible price point.

Be careful of your fingers when using. They can get burned easily.

In recent years, curling wands have taken over the hair tool industry. Wands are curling irons without a clamp and are ideal for a more lived in look. The ionic technology in this wand helps banish frizz and evenly distribute heat across the iron to ensure long lasting waves. For some, it also can be easier to control. With short hair, you don't have much to work with, so that extra bit of control is key.

Barrel Material: Titanium | Size: 0.75–1.25 inches | Temperature Range: 265–430 degrees

Best for Thick Hair

Kristin ess titanium pivoting wand.

The barrel bends at a 90-degree angle for easy access to strands at every angle.

This tool helps create full, voluminous waves, so if you are looking for tighter ringlets, we recommend choosing something else.

A thick head of hair is both a blessing and a curse. While natural volume can be the cause of some serious hair envy, styling can be time consuming and arduous, even at a shorter length. The bendable barrel stretches to a 90-degree angle, allowing easy access at the back of your head. This wand ensures you will never get stuck noticing a stray straight piece after you left the house ever again. This does have a higher heat range than many on the list, so definitely don't skip a heat protectant .

Barrel Material: Titanium | Size: 1.25 inches | Temperature Range: 325–425 degrees

Best for Fine Hair

Ghd curve soft curl iron.

The cool tip on the end of the barrel allows for a safe space for hands to hold when styling without getting burned.

This iron does not come with adjustable heat settings.

Fine hair is more fragile. Heat styling, tugging, and pulling cause more wear and tear than on coarser strands. While applying heat of any kind to hair causes damage, this iron keeps a consistent burn at 365 degrees, which is gentler on strands than heat above 400. The tip remains cool no matter how long you keep your iron on, but our favorite part is the automatic shut-off after 30 minutes. Not to mention, ghd is so confident you'll fall in love with this iron that they offer a 2-year warranty when you buy.

Barrel Material: Ceramic | Size: 1.25 inches | Temperature Range: 365 degrees

  • Material: Mainly, curling irons are made out of ceramic, titanium, and tourmaline. There are pros and cons to each of the materials. Titanium is super lightweight, heats up quickly, and holds heat longer than ceramic, so it is preferred by professional stylists. Ceramic and tourmaline distribute heat more evenly and are easier on the hair, making it more popular with at home users. Both materials work on all hair textures and types.
  • Barrel Size: Raven Hurtado , a professional hair stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, recommends a simple rule of thumb. "The hairstyle you try to create depends on the barrel size, the smaller the barrel is the tighter the curls will be." For shorter strands, 1-inch and below barrels will create smaller ringlets, while anything larger will create bouncy waves.

What features should you look for in a curling iron when you have short hair?

According to celebrity hair stylist David Lopez , your iron should depend on your styling capacity. "Are you more comfortable with a wand or a clip iron? Overall, a clip iron is better for coarse or frizzier hair types, and wands are better for fine hair." He thinks the most important thing about the iron is adjustable heat settings. Depending on your hair texture, different heat settings will be most effective.

What size curling iron is best for short hair?

"For short hair, it's best to use a half-inch to a 1-inch curling iron," says Hurtado, "It's easier to maneuver and wrap the hair all the way around." Lopez recommends deciding on what style you prefer. "A 1.25 iron will get you loose texture and bounce, but if you're looking for more texture, a 1-inch iron will be a better pick."

If you need to curl and straighten your hair while traveling, then a 2-in-1 travel hair curler is a great option. You have access to both tools without sacrificing the extra space.

This travel sized curling iron by L’ANGE doubles as a flat iron, to give you a variety in your hair without having to worry about carrying multiple items. I’ve always traveled with both a curling and flat iron (unless I’ve had my hair permanently straightened recently) so when I found this 2-in-1 travel hair curler, it was the perfect solution.

You can choose your preferred heat with the adjustable temperature setting of 280°F-430°F. My hair is fine and wavy, but the roots carry some extra curl, so when I brought this on a four-week trip, it took a few extra glides.

All things considered, I have to say this 2-in-1 curling and straightening tool is one of the best travel curling iron tools out there. It works perfectly for the occasional curl and daily smoothing.

Conair ThermaCell Compact Curling Iron

Cordless Curling Iron for on the Go

When you travel with electronic devices or hair styling tools, you have to think about plugs, adapters, and voltage. Especially if you’re traveling to somewhere like Europe, where the plugs don’t match. Unless you travel with a cordless curling iron.

I had always wanted cordless hair tools for road trips or places where access to power outlets aren’t easy to come by. Measuring a mere 6.4 inches, the ThermaCell by Conair is the ultimate cordless curler to carry throughout your travels!

Our favorite feature of this cordless curling tool is obviously the fact that there are no plugs or batteries to fuss with. And the ThermaCell cartridges last several months, so you can style your hair anytime, anywhere without worrying about running out of juice.

The ThermaCell also saves you time by heating up in as little as 30 seconds, giving you plenty of time to hit the city and enjoy your vacation. The Importance of Dual Voltage Curling Irons

Before you head off to purchase you’re favorite of the best travel curling iron options, we need to have a chat about the importance of a dual voltage curling iron. Voltage refers simply to electricity, and different countries you might travel to have different types of electricity. For example, here in the US, we use 110-120V, but in Europe, they use 220-240V.

There’s a good chance that your electronics are built for the same voltage as the country in which you bought them. That means that if you take your non-dual voltage hair curler with you while you’re visiting another country, it might not work. In fact, you could even blow a fuse or destroy your travel hair tool if you try to use it. Not cool!

If you want a full run-down on voltage by country, you can check out this World Standards page .

Learn about voltage converters vs. adapters !

To use your favorite travel curling iron in another country, you’re going to need two things:

  • The correct voltage
  • A travel adapter

Your hair styling tools, including blow dryers, curling wands and irons, and hair straighteners use a ton of electricity. That means it’s important they they are used with the correct voltage.

Some hair tools are labeled “dual-voltage,” which means they’ve been designed to be used in multiple countries. If you’re traveling outside of the US (or a country that uses the same voltage) you’re going to want to bring your dual voltage curler with you.

Once you have your hands on a dual voltage curling iron, you’re also going to need a travel adapter. A travel adapter enables you to plug your electronics into international outlets while you travel. Since not every country uses the same type of plug, we highly recommend you buy an international adapter .

Visit this power outlet guide for travelers to see a full list of plugs and outlets by country!

The Best Travel Curling Iron for the US

If you’re both from the US and traveling within the US, you won’t need to get a dual voltage curling iron. But you might want to save some space by choosing to travel with a mini curling iron.

If you are traveling to the US from a country outside of the US, you’ll need to travel with a dual voltage curler (you can still save space by getting yourself a mini iron). Make sure that you switch the voltage to 110V/120V before using your travel hair curler once you’ve arrived in the US.

The Best Travel Curling Iron for Europe

Is your travel curling iron dual voltage? If so, then that is the one you’ll want to use if you’re traveling from the US to Europe, Asia, Africa, or the South Pacific.

If the one you have at home is not a dual voltage curling iron, you’ll want to look into purchasing a new one for your travels (but avoid the 1-inch Mini Hair Curling Iron because it doesn’t have that feature).

Note that if you purchase a travel curling iron for Europe while you’re there, it likely will be a curling iron with a European plug. If you’re from the US, a European curling iron won’t help much when you get home!

A dual voltage curling iron is not automatically set for travel, so make sure to switch your hair tools to 220V/240V before you use them at your destination!

So, are you ready to spend your vacation with beautiful curls without the fuss? The best travel curling iron can easily take your hair from flat to va-va-voom in a matter of minutes!

Regarding the cordless one, can it be brought onto the airplane in carryon?

Lori Parsons

I would like to purchase a 220v -2 prong curling iron. Not a dual voltage. They are not consistent in overheating even with all the adapters and “dual capability.”

I simply want to purchase a European 2-prong curling iron. Could someone post that as a purchase option please?

I bought two of the 6th Sense Styling Technology. One for travel/gym bag and one for home. I love it so much!

Thanks for sharing your love of your curling iron with us Jillian! Always love hearing the feedback of our readers!

Sandra Manners

I always travel with a normal size curling iron but find it is a little too long to fit comfortably in my personal item. I purchased the Conair Mini Pro Ceramic but found it was too hard to use on my shoulder-length hair. I kept burning my fingers! I think it would work well for someone with short hair, however. I returned it and bought the AmoVee 2-in-1 curling iron. This one is a keeper. Much easier to use and I like the padded sleeve that comes with it. It is dual voltage too! In the meantime, I stumbled across an old Charlescraft Quartette curling iron in a second-hand store for $10. The handle and the four curling iron barrels are separate and snap together. Smart design! It is not dual voltage but I can use it for domestic travel. I notice a similar one (Triplette instead of Quartette) is for sale on Poshmark.

The 11 Best Curling Irons for Short Hair That Make Styling Easy

travel size curling iron for short hair

If you're blessed with naturally curly hair, don't take it for granted. The rest of us are dying for cool-girl beachy waves or bouncy, beautiful curls. There are so many tools—curling irons and wands, rollers, scrunching creams, crimpers, and more—that it can be confusing to find the right way to achieve the look. And since it's difficult to loop short hair around a long curling iron, it can be even harder for short-haired girls to get glamorous curls. Lucky for them, we found the best curling irons for short hair. These curling irons are lightweight and easy to use, and they range in price to fit every budget. A few tips for using a curling iron with short hair: Keep the heat on the lower side since you have less hair covering the barrel, especially if your hair is thin or damaged. If you do have damaged, thin, or fine hair, it's smart to pick a curling iron with multiple heat settings so you can adjust it. Remember, the tightness of the curl will depend on the width of the barrel.

When buying a new curling iron, remember that size matters. "Barrel size is the most important factor to consider when choosing a curling iron for short hair," explains celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko . "A larger barrel works best on longer hair types, while the smaller the barrel, the better it is for shorter hair types." You don't want to go larger than a 1-inch or 1.5-inch tapered barrel if you have short strands, or the curl won't really hold or make an impact. With short hair , a smaller barrel will be easier to handle and help you prevent accidents, so even if a 1.5-inch barrel promises perfect beachy waves, it will be harder to get short hair around the barrel. In the same way, even though .75-inch barrels offer tighter curls for longer hair, you can simply use bigger pieces of short hair as you curl to get the same beachy look. Mini curling irons are also a great option for short hair, as they're lightweight and can easily have a short piece of hair wrapped around it.

Don't let your short strands hold you back from getting flawless curls—these are the best curling irons for short hair.

Editor's Choice

Bed head curlipops 1-inch tourmaline ceramic styling iron.

We've written praise for this curling iron before, and we stand behind it. Thanks to its 1-inch barrel, short hair easily achieves bodacious curls that are loose and ready for play. The curling iron heats up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for fast styling and uses tourmaline ceramic technology to minimize frizz and flyaways. Not only is the price amazing, but the cool tip and heat-protective glove make it easier to get short hair wrapped around without fear of burns. "This 1-inch non-tapered wand is perfect for my barely-shoulder-grazing hair," one reviewer said . "My hair is shorter in the back as well and I can still get it wrapped around this wand. My curls are uniform but still beachy."

Best Ceramic

Sultra the bombshell rod curling iron.

Ceramic curling irons are known for producing a more uniform curl with their even heat-distributing plates. They're preferred by those with easy-to-curl hair and recommended to those who suffer from damage, as their smooth-gliding material is more gentle. Although this 1-inch curling iron will set your wallet back a bit, its advanced ceramic technology is much less damaging to hair than other materials, which makes it ideal for those with thin or damaged hair. In fact, the brand's infrared and ionic technology smooths the cuticle and protects your strands from breakage by strengthening the follicle from within. And it has an auto shut-off feature, so you don't have to worry about burning down the house from forgetting to turn it off. "I have really straight, fine hair that is impossible to get volume with," an Amazon shopper shared. "When I got it, I had long hair and I cut my hair short, just to my shoulders and it's awesome!"

Best for Thick Hair

Hot tools pro 24k gold curling iron.

The gold 1-inch barrel works to make silky smooth curls, but if you have thin hair, be sure to put it on a lower heat setting—it gets hot, hot, hot. But it maintains a consistent temperature for even curls and easy styling; users have their choice of seven temperature settings, with the highest being 430 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat range suits a variety of hair types, but reviewers agree that it works best with thicker strands. "Hot Tools have always worked great for me because I have thick wavy hair," one customer wrote , adding, "I could see how this might be too hot [for thin hair]." Another shared , "If you have short hair, it's the best. I've actually tried a few and this one is a holy grail."

Best Titanium

Babylisspro nano titanium conicurl iron.

Titanium curling irons offer faster heating with minimal damage to your hair by preserving the moisture of the strands, which translates to a salon-quality shine. They also glide more smoothly across your tresses, resulting in fewer tangles and breakage. These typically reach higher temperatures, making them better suited for thicker strands. The tapered shape of this curling iron will create loose curls that get narrower at the bottom. It's made with the brand's Nano Titanium technology to promote an even distribution of heat, while negative ions smooth the cuticle and give hair a silky sheen. This is a great curling iron if you have thick or coarse hair, as the titanium barrel reaches high temperatures very quickly. "I really like this wand; it is not difficult to use," assured one Amazon shopper . "My hair is just short of my shoulder. [The] first time I tried it, my hair looked great. No learning curve."

Best Tapered Rod

Ghd 1-inch curling iron.

Tapered rods are preferred for creating natural-looking waves and ringlets as they're better equipped for achieving varying curl sizes. Though the price tag of the ghd Curve & Wave Curling Iron isn't little, reviewers assure that the results are nothing short of incredible. The brand recommends this iron for shorter hair because of its 1.1-inch barrel and ceramic material. This pick also uses ghd's Ultra-zone technology, which makes it able to detect each section of your hair and maintain a gentle 365-degree-Fahrenheit temperature. This minimizes damage while boosting bounce and shine. "This is the best curling iron I have used in years," raved one customer in their review . "My hair is layered, falls to the tops of my shoulders, and is very fine; the tong holds my hair securely, and the barrel is small enough to wrap even the shortest layers around. At first, I found the lack of temperature controls kinda disappointing, but I now appreciate just how straightforward and simple it makes everything."

Best for Tight Ringlets

Bluetop tourmaline ceramic hair crimper curler.

This curling iron's skinny .5-inch barrel is suitable for all hair lengths, including super short hair. The fast-heating pick creates tight spirals and offers adjustable temperature settings, reaching up to 446 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus it has an auto shut-off feature for forgetful curlers and an anti-hot tip to prevent burns. "If you have long, short, or medium hair, this curling iron will make your hair look fabulous," raved one reviewer . "[It] warms up quickly, I like that a lot. Its heat setting is divine. For safety, it has [an] anti-heat function that prevents burning [your] finger [tips]. The length of the cable is quite long and that matters. The curls are [as] tight as I like them."

Best for Thin Hair

Nume classic curling wand.

NuMe recommends its original curling wand for any hair length, but its 1-inch tourmaline ceramic barrel is great for thinner hair thanks to its friction-resistant construction. Using far-infrared heat and negative ion conditioning technology, the curling wand reduces breakage, preserves moisture, and enhances shine so you can enjoy healthy, shiny curls. Since it heats hair from the inside out, the outer cuticle is protected and your strands are left frizz-free and soft. "I love this wand," shared an Amazon reviewer . "[It] heats up quick and the curls last all day—and even the next."

Best With Auto-Shut Off

Remington pro pearl ceramic curling wand.

This pretty-in-pink, under-$30 curling wand has gotten rave reviews. The .5 to 1-inch barrel and slim conical rod are best for short hair, and it's super lightweight. Ceramic material ensures even, consistent heat while crushed pearls deliver sleek, frizz-free strands with minimal damage. It has a temperature lock feature that retains your perfect temperature throughout curling, but auto shut-off ensures it won't keep that temperature after you're done. The affordable curling wand has earned an impressive 4.6-star rating from Walmart shoppers and more than 260 perfect reviews.

Best Rotating Rod

Drybar the 3-day bender curling iron.

Perfect for curling novices and experts alike, this curling iron from Drybar takes the guesswork out of achieving salon-quality waves with its rotating clamp, which helps you spend less time in front of the mirror. Its dual-ceramic construction helps it maintain even heat distribution, and reach curl-ready temperatures in only 60 seconds. Ionic and infrared technology come together to heat the hair from within and seal the cuticle, ensuring minimal damage to the strands and giving it a healthy looking frizz-free shine. "The best curling iron I have ever owned," said an Amazon shopper . "I can do my whole head of shoulder-length hair in less than five minutes. So easy!"

Best for Beach Waves

T3 interchangeable styling wand.

"My favorite curling iron to use on short hair to achieve beach waves is the T3 Whirl Trio, as the barrel sizes are great for short hair," Polko says of the versatile styling tool, which has five consistent heat settings and is compatible with the brand's various barrel options. "To achieve lived-in beach waves on shorter strands, I recommend using a 1-inch barrel. Using a barrel that is bigger at the base but smaller at the end will help to keep volume at the root."

Pro Tip: "To give the overall beachy look you'll want to keep the ends out, which is why I recommend using a wand and holding the ends out from the rest of the hair wrapped around the iron," Polko adds. "This will keep ends straighter and undone, which makes the style look and feel really beachy and lived in. I also always like to polish off beachy waves with a touch of the Aquage Beyond Shine Spray , which is perfect for lightweight hold and a high shine finish."

Best for Damaged Hair

T3 ceramic curling iron.

"When curling or applying any heat on damaged hair, it's important to be cognizant of the heat setting regardless of style," Polko explains, noting that it's "critical" to apply a heat protectant prior to curling if you have damaged strands. "T3's Curl ID offers HeatID technology that provides the best heat setting for your hair based on hair type, texture, and any damage factors. Many people tend to think that the higher the heat, the better the curl, which is not the case. Start on a lower heat setting, especially on damaged hair, and work the heat up incrementally as based on need."

The 11 Best Curling Irons for Short Hair of 2024

Our best overall pick is the NuMe Classic Pearl Bubble Curling Wand

travel size curling iron for short hair

Byrdie / Sabrina Jiang

Shopping for a curling iron should be pretty straightforward. Except for most of us, it's not. With constantly evolving technology, shapes, and sizes, it can be difficult to keep track of what's hype, what's not, and what's actually worth spending your money on. (Especially since some of the best curling irons come in at a hefty dollar value.) That being said, there are some truly great rods and wands out there—especially if you're looking for an iteration to pair beautifully with shorter locks.

We conducted hours of research on the best curling irons for short hair, evaluating them on design type and barrel size, as their heat settings and how temperature range. We took into consideration all hair types and textures, and how easy the tool is to use. After considering dozens of different brands, we landed on the following best in show.

Final Verdict

What to look for in a curling iron for short hair, best overall, nume curling wand.

Travel-friendly and with the ability to create unique and head-turning curls (the barrels are really just that good), this handsome foursome is worth every penny. According to the brand, undone waves can be achieved with the one-inch straight barrel, tousled waves with the traditional tapered (seen right), cascading waves with the reversed tapered (middle left), and loose with the 1.25-inch straight. Oh, and the base also boasts five different adjustable heat settings, auto world voltage, and a one-hour automatic shutoff, so you'll never waste a day wondering did I or didn't I? again.

Best Tapered Rod

Ghd tapered curling wand.

Tapered wand creates versatile styles

Heats up quickly

Hair feels soft

Not ideal for every style

According to the brand's helpful product comparison guide , this is one of the best Ghd curling irons for short hair, and if the stellar reviews have anything to say about it, they're not lying to us. Ever so slightly tapered at the end, the wand boasts cutting-edge tri-zone technology that claims to ensure even and consistent temperature for healthier, long-lasting results. Yes, this one's an investment. But if our personal stash of Ghd tools (some of which have lasted us for five years and beyond) gives us a hint, it's a worthy one.

Temperature Range: Up to 365 degrees Fahrenheit | Barrel Size: 1 inch

Best Rotating Rod

Drybar the 3-day bender curling iron.

Rotating clamp styles hair faster

Helps reduce frizz

Aesthetically, Drybar's signature bright yellow iron is a winner, but so is its amazing technology and curl payoff for those with shorter strands. Great for all hair types—from tightly coiled curls to pin-straight, this iron boasts a rotating clamp (which may cut your get-ready time in half) in addition to dual ceramic heaters, infrared heating technology, and a handy digital temperature reader.

Temperature Range: Up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit | Barrel Size: 1.25 inches

Best Rotating Rod, Runner-Up

Beachwaver co. rotating curling iron.

Creates natural-looking waves

Has two speeds

Has 30-minute shutoff

The Beachwaver Co. has been making waves within the industry for a while now, and honestly, it's for good reason. Case in point: It's a rotating curling iron that has two different speeds (fast or slow, take your pick), boasts ceramic technology that may decrease damage, and allows you to create every iteration of curl for your short hair—from intricate and defined to loose and beachy . Temperature Range: Up to 410 degrees Fahrenheit | Barrel Size: 1 inch

Best Cone-Shaped Rod

Paul mitchell neuro angle rod curling iron.

Easy and comfortable to use

Creates lasting styles

Full disclaimer: When this curling wand first came across our desks, we were skeptical. Would an angling iron actually prove useful? Or would it just be a liability where unsightly ear, neck, and chin burns are concerned? Thankfully, however, we were proven wrong. With four different rod positions, this universally flattering one-inch wand allows you to position your iron wherever you need to without distressing your biceps, shoulders, or neck in the process. Plus, it heats up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit in record time—we're talking just a matter of seconds, folks.

Temperature Range: Up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit | Size: 1"

Best Marcel

Harry josh pro tools ceramic curling iron.

Three-in-one design can be used multiple different ways

Has an automatic shut-off

On the pricier side

Only comes in one size

A vast majority of professional stylists opt for marcel curling irons, which simply means irons with a clamp that is manually-controlled rather than spring-loaded. While the technique takes a bit of practice and getting used to, it ultimately yields a very uniform, precise, old-school type curl (hence why many pros are such fans).  It makes sense then that a professional stylist would create this tool, which lets you experiment with using that type of clamp. Though if it turns out that a marcel iron just is not your vibe—or you want to have other options—the manual clamp is detachable and the iron comes with a spring-loaded version, too. Or, remove the clamps entirely and just use it as a wand. Also nice: The fact that you can adjust the temp from 190 to 380 degrees.

Temperature Range: Up to 380 degrees Fahrenheit | Barrel Size: 1 inch

Our best overall pick is the NuMe Classic Pearl Bubble Curling Wand , which is made with tourmaline, for less damage, and designed with a patented shape that encourages bouncy texture. For something more affordable, consider the Hot Tools 24K Gold Professional Curling Iron . This drugstore pick has a 24 karat gold surface that helps to create long-lasting and ultra-defined hair looks.

Barrel Size

Go for a smaller barrel, like one that's 0.5 to one inch in size. Any barrel bigger than that will be too big for shorter hair, which may not allow the curl to hold. You want it to be able to wrap around without being too loose, which is why 0.5 to one inch are the ideal size.

Take into account whether you feel more comfortable using a wand or iron before selecting a curling iron. Typically an iron uses a clip to hold the curl in place, whereas a wand requires you to hold the curl in place. Both can yield the same results, so it's truly just a matter of preference of what you like to use more.

Adjustable Heat

Make sure your curling iron arrives with adjustable heat. This can help you adjust the temperature to one that is best for your hair. This may help prevent damage and keep your hair in tip-top shape, which is something we all want. Different hair types and textures need different temperatures, so selecting an iron with adjustable heat is pretty important.

Both tools work well for short hair styling. It depends on what you're comfortable with. The one you have success with is truly based on your personal preference and how you use it.

A barrel that's 0.5 to one inch in size is usually best for shorter hair. A smaller barrel will make the tool easier to maneuver and allow you to wrap an entire section of hair around it.

Once your hair is dry, part your hair in the middle and divide into as many sections as you can. Find the desired heat setting. Try to wrap your hair in increments of 1-inch and begin curling the front pieces, making your way to the back, on either side of your part. Remember to use no a barrel between .05 and 1 inch for best results.

Whether you just chopped off your hair or you have been rocking a trendy blunt bob for years, maintaining short tresses follows a different set of rules than many of Us are used to. Short hair requires special attention when it comes to styling your locks, and this is especially true if you’re looking to create curls. You can’t use the same types of curling tools that work for long or medium-length hair. When shopping for a curling iron or round hot brush that will get you the exact type of style you’re looking for, you have to be meticulous about doing research.

Not sure where to begin looking for your perfect short hair-friendly curling iron? Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered! Whether you want a quick and easy styler that you can use on the daily or one that’s specifically designed for choppy, beachy waves, we have the ultimate collection of tools that can work wonders for short hair lengths. Happy styling!

Best 3-in-1 Curling Iron

T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand Set

Some tools are so fantastic that they benefit people with all types of haircuts. This three-in-one curler is a bestseller on Dermstore, and judging by the reviews, we totally understand why! There are different sizes so you can snag every type of curl that you prefer. The cone-shaped wands help you control how tight or loose your curls come out. We especially appreciate this size for shorter styles, because the curl will end up longer and looser. Sometimes traditional barrel-style can create a lot of volume, which doesn’t always look great with particularly short hair. The tapered curl makes that issue a thing of the past!

Get the T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand Set for $325 , available at Dermstore!

Best For Everyday Use

FHI Heat Stylus Thermal Styling Brush

As far as your everyday curling needs are concerned, this is definitely a go-to tool. If your hair is short, you don’t necessarily need a massive curling brush to leave your hair looking flawless! It has double-sided barrel with hairbrush prongs to help you brush out your mane, and keep it in check while curling. For pixie cuts and other short styles, this is definitely one of the easiest tools to maneuver. When you need to get ready in a pinch, you don’t want to use a curling wand that requires extra time to get the style right. This is also a great curling iron to use if you have bangs! You can curl them and then brush them out with this tool to get your fringe exactly how you want it.

Get the FHI Heat Stylus Thermal Styling Brush for prices starting at $69 , available at Amazon! Please note, prices are accurate at the date of publication, March 23, 2022, but are subject to change.

ghd Curve Wand

Have you ever seen a curling wand that looks so futuristic? The more we learned about this tool, the more we realized just how amazing it can be for shorter hair. That messy, chunky curl isn’t easily achieved with your typical cylindrical curling tool — but this tool will provide you with an effortlessly cool curl.

The curls still look as natural as ever, but they will have a little more dimension — plus, a lot more volume . Shoppers say that there is a “learning curve” when it comes using this wand, but with time and practice, you can get incredible results! Your curls will have more of a pop to them when you use this type of tool. When you shake them out, you will get stunning curls like you’ve never seen before!

Best For Straightener-Style Waves

T3 - SinglePass Compact Styling Iron

Again, we’re going with a smaller travel-size tool for this category. Over the past couple of years or so, beauty gurus on YouTube have been teaching the world how to get curls using a flat iron. The type of wave that can be created with straighteners has become so popular because they come out looking beachy and effortless . And if you don’t want to buy multiple tools for different purposes, using a flat iron as a curling tool takes care of that! It’s better to use these smaller flat irons for short hair because they are simply easier to control. They are ideal for creating wispy waves on the ends of your hair, which will look great for any above-the-shoulder style!

4 Best Curling Irons For Short Hair Buyer’s Guide – 2022

Woman with curly short hair

Looking for the best curling iron for short hair?

According to Fashion Icon Iris Apfel,

If your hair is done properly and you have on good shoes, you can get away with anything.

It’ll be redundant to talk about the importance of hairstyles after such a powerful quote. However, it is a common phenomenon to fall into hairstyle tedium. Who does not crave for Victoria’s Secret model hair? But it sounds like “Pigs fly” because we are not Victoria’s Secret model, and professional hairstylists are not at our beck and call.

If you want to give a break to the regular hairstyles after getting sick of straight hair, you need to keep scrolling down to the end. To put a stop to the tedious hairstyle, few curls to your short hair will help you a lot, and the good news is it is much easier and faster to curl short hair than curling long hair.

Short hair lengths compatible for curling

Choosing the right length of hair is a great decision to take because not all length is going to suit every face shape. International Training Director of “Color Wow” and Senior Stylist at “ John Frieda Salons UK ”, Giles Robinson, says: ‘ It’s all about the angles .’

No, you do not need to rush to the professional hairstylists for finding out the perfect length of your hair. Celebrity stylists already revealed the secret “the 2.25′ (5.5cm) rule” for you ease which you can try anywhere and anytime. John Frieda created the Rule. Now we are going to know something more about short hair.

Ear length or very short hair is a daring decision because as the term indicates it’s the shortest length of hair. In this length hair reaches the ears which could be the earlobe or even the top of the ear.

Chin length or medium short is one of the classics and stylish looks. Cute retro looks suit this length. Textured and layered short haircuts also go perfectly with Chin length hair.

After using the best curling iron for short hair

Choosing the Best Curling Iron for Short Hair

Fundamental factors to look for on the best curling iron for short hair are as follows:

Barrel Width

Large barrel proves to be inappropriate for short hair because as the width increases it becomes difficult to wrap short hair around the barrel of the iron. So, thinner barrel will be the perfect one for styling short hair.

Some different width curling irons are found out there on the shelves, but you need to pick the perfect one which matches your hair type , health, and the style you’re craving for. Don’t worry it is analyzed in detail in the product guide section. Let’s just have an idea about how width plays a vital role in styling hair.

Firstly, curling iron with barrel width of 3/8” is a perfect size for kinky curls in very and medium-short hair. Secondly, if you want to get tight curls for very or medium short hair, you must pick curling iron with ½’’ barrel width and 5/8” can also be tried for tight curls. Thirdly, for classic curls in very and medium-short hair, you need to choose a curling iron with 3/4’’ barrel width. Finally, curling iron of 1’’ barrel width will give loose curls in very and medium-short hair.

5 in 1 Professional Curling Iron and Wand Set - 0.3 to 1.25 Inch Interchangeable Ceramic Barrel Wand Curling Iron - Dual Voltage Hair Curler Set for All Hair Types with Glove and Travel Case by Xtava

Barrel Shape

The shape of the curling iron’s barrel is an important factor to consider getting the desired style. Three possible barrel shapes provide three different options for styling curls.

While you are looking for spiral curls, you must go for a cylindrical-shaped barrel. It is also possible to mingle either loose or tight curl at a time. Conical shaped barrels must be chosen for this blend. While the conically shaped barrel is used, you will get wider curls near your scalp which will gradually be tighter towards the end. If you want the opposite result, you just need to get a reverse conical-shaped barrel.

Ceramic, tourmaline, and titanium are found used in curling irons. The exposure of these materials results in an emission of large amounts of negative ions thus considered the best conductors of heat. In the later section, we will know which material suits your hair type depending on the health of the hair. Always reject curling products containing chrome or harsh metals.

Temperature control

Curling irons having less than five different heat settings do not worth buying because it limits options. The heat levels are crucial as constant exposure to heat like 400°F, or higher will cost the health of the hair.

Our Top Curling Irons for Short Hair Reviews

Products are presented below according to different criteria i.e. the length of hair, types of hair, types of curl, with of barrel, etc. to match your hair pattern correctly:

1. Infiniti Pro by Conair Nano Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron

best curling iron for short hair from INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR

Check on Amazon

Tourmaline ceramic curling iron is the best for thin to coarse hair because it releases negative ion which is good for your hair. This type of irons can be tried even on damaged hair, so you do not have to worry about the current health of your hair. Infiniti Pro by Conair Nano Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron is the perfect one for the criteria so mentioned.

This product has five sizes of which ½”, ¾”, and 1” are suitable to curl short hair. Each of these three will give you different curls. If you want to get tight curls in very short or medium short hair, you should try ½” barrel of this product. For classic curls in very short or medium short hair, you need to get ¾” barrel. If you have medium short hair, you need to buy 1” barrel of this product to get a loose curl.

2. XTAVA Professional 5-in-1 Curling Iron

Best interchangeable curling iron for short hair by Xtava

As you have already known tourmaline ceramic is the best option out there in the world of curling irons for thin to coarse hair, I’m going to refer you to another tourmaline ceramic-based product. XTAVA Professional 5-in-1 Curling Iron is the product that has become most popular among the customers.

If you buy this product, you will get five items at a time out of which 2 barrels can be used in short hair. One of which is ¾” barrel and the other is 1” barrel. If you have Xtava curling iron, you can use its ¾” barrel to add classic curl in very or medium short hair and 1” barrel to find loose curl in your medium hair. You do not need to buy two different irons for classic and loose curl if you buy Xtava curling iron.

3. Babyliss Pro BABNT100S Professional Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron

BaBylissPRO BABNT100SN Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron, 1 Inch

Titanium Curling Irons will be a go if your hair is thick to coarse because curling this type of hair requires much heat than other hair types do. At the same time, you need to pay attention to the health of your hair. Babyliss Titanium Curling Iron is the product that can help you curl your thick to coarse hair the way you want.

This product has different barrel sizes so that you can get the one that suits your criteria the best. For short hair ¾” barrel will give you classic curls and 1” barrel will give loose curls. You need to be cautious because if your hair is damaged, you must avoid high-temperature levels of this product. Nothing to worry as this product contains 50 heat levels so you can pick low-level temperature if your hair is damaged.

4. Hot Tools HT1138 Micro Mini Professional Curling Iron

Hot Tools Professional 24K Gold Curling Iron/Wand for Long Lasting Curls, 0.375 Inch

Now I’m going to refer you to the product which gives the customers a wide range of choices. Hot Tools Professional Spring Curling Iron is a perfect tool for curling short hair. You can give your kinky hair curls with 3/8” barrel of this product, tight curls with the help of ½” barrel, and classic curls with ¾” barrel.

For loose curl in medium short hair, you can use 1” barrel size. This product is 24k gold plated which allows you to curl your thick to coarse hair so gently. Being Gold plated it gets so hot that it can burn your thin hair. Though it has multi-heat settings, you should pay extra attention if your hair is thin.

FAQs on Curling Short Hair

Q1. is a curling iron or wand better for short hair.

For tighter, more defined, and even curls, a curling iron is better but for loose, shaggy curls, a wand is better. The only difference is, for short hair you must have a thinner barrel to wrap the hair. A clamp would be better to hold and control the short hair strands better.

Q2. What size wand is best for short hair?

This size will allow you to create big beachy waves and tight curls!

For short hair, a short barrel of ½” to 1” is preferred. This will allow you to make loose beachy waves as well as tight curls.

Q3. How do you use a curling iron on short hair?

For short hair, a 1” barrel works best. Apply a heat protectant all over the hair. Make sections of the whole head and take one lock at a time. Hold the iron downwards from the top of the head and wrap the hair from the head, outwards towards the end. Hold for a couple of seconds and release.

Read how exactly we tested mini flat irons ahead — plus, advice on what to look for when shopping. You can pair these pint-sized hot tools with a travel hair dryer worth slimming down for.

Every one of our consumer testers agreed the CHI straightened their hair to perfection , and a majority gave it a top score for reaching the right temperature to straighten effectively. In fact, many praised its "smooth iron," "lightweight" feel and quick heating. A majority of mini models we tested felt too hot to the touch, while this was the only one to keep cool on the surface. Our pros also love that its dual voltage makes it a good option for overseas travel. Keep in mind that its on/off switch is located on the inside of its handles. Since this iron was one of the longest among the mini flat irons we tested, the switch is not as close to the hinge of the handles, making it easier to reach.

Conair's MiniPro may not pull out all the bells and whistles, but it certainly gets the job done. A t eight inches, it's small and compact for easy traveling . Those with bangs may appreciate this more as some online reviews say it gives a "blown out" effect rather than totally sleek. Others attested to its quick heating, with a red light that blinks off once it reaches the temperature setting. We haven't tested this in Lab yet, but our pros appreciate its dual voltage capabilities.

Its big sister iron is our Beauty Lab's standard for some anti-frizz studies. The curved edge makes it easier to smooth frizz from top to bottom . "Not only did this save me from a bad hair day, but it also worked wonders on my hair!" says one Ulta reviewer. "This made my frizzy bangs bone straight." Plus, it comes with a heat-resistant pouch that you can rest it on when not in use.

No thoughts, just silky strands. Though we've yet to try this mini hair straightening brush, our editors named the full-sized Amika brush in our best hair straighteners roundup, loving that it styled hair with ease . It's a happy medium between a straightener and a dryer, smoothing flyaways while maintaining volume.

Nearly identical to the brand's full-sized straightener we tried, this mini, cordless version aims to impress with its ceramic plates that ensure smooth flattening whenever curling or straightening hair. The brand claims it keeps a full 20-minute charge, plus a consistent temperature of 365º for even styling . When getting ready in a hurry, it's said to heat up in 45 seconds and cools down in 15 minutes.

Run this T3 through hair sections to reveal silky smooth ends on the other side, then slip its heat-resistant cap on for quick and easy storage. In Lab tests, we discovered that its plate temperatures measured up to its packaging claims. What's more, its curved ceramic plates resemble the ones of the full-sized T3 that testers reported made fine hair noticeably shiny without creases or tugs.

Our editors and pros alike covet DryBar hot tools — hair dryers , curling wands , travel hair dryers (winning best overall) — as the brand always performs exceptionally on the road and in our Lab tests. At just six inches in length, its compact build tucks away nicely into carry-ons and purses. One DryBar reviewer with short hair said it made it easy to curl or straighten those hard-to-grab pieces. Plus, the included travel pouch doubles as a heat protection pad, so don't worry about marring countertops.

A teeny-tiny flat iron may be exactly what you need to tame flyaways or to fix bangs on-the-go. We appreciate that this Eva NYC straightener offers dual voltage with adjustable temperature settings . Beauty lovers rave about Eva NYC for its cutely packaged yet reliable hair care products — this one's no different thanks to its unique hand ridges that make it harder for the iron to slip out of your hand.

How we tested the best mini flat irons

line break

Our Beauty Lab experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute regularly test hot tools, from curling irons to hair dryer brushes . When we tested mini flat irons, we evaluated 10 models against five full-sized Lab-tested straighteners.

The Lab scientists honed in on safety and effectiveness by assessing temperatures of surfaces that can touch skin and handling of the controls. We measured the inner plate and surface temperature heating profiles of the flat irons and compared them to the temperature of the full-sized straighteners we previously tested and recommended. We also tried the hair tools on 15 consumer testers who gave satisfaction ratings based on how well it straightened, its surface heat and straightening temperature, then commented on what they liked and disliked about it.

What to consider when shopping for a mini flat iron

line break

✔️ Dual voltage is always a good idea as it's one less worry when traveling internationally. Still, we recommend finding an appropriate travel adapter for plugging into outlets as some voltages may vary depending on where you are.

✔️ Most mini flat irons feature a 0.5-inch wide plate. For consumers with long, thick or curly hair, it may take more time or effort to do their regular styling with a travel iron, so consider this before you ditch your regular one on your next trip.

✔️ For travel irons that are relatively short in length and compact in size, the controls may be too close to the hot plates or the hinge. The user can then face burning their fingers or have difficulty adjusting settings including turning it on and off. Aral suggests that they look for simple controls , like one with auto on/off and easy-to-reach settings.

How To Choose the Perfect Curling Iron Size [Guide + Chart]

' src=

Choosing the perfect curling iron size can be tricky. Each barrel size creates variations of curls and waves, but only some sizes work on all hair lengths.

You could choose a ½-inch curling iron to create tight curls if you have short hair, but folks with longer hair will spend much more time styling their hair with this barrel size.

Thankfully, there are curling iron sizes for short hair, long hair, and everything in between. In our guide, we cover all of the curling iron sizes, so you can figure out what’s best for your hair type and length. We even created a curling iron size chart to help you look and feel your best.

Curling iron size chart

Choosing the right curling iron size determines the type of hairstyle you will achieve. The smaller the curling iron barrel, the tighter your curls will be. Check out our curling iron size chart to find out which is best for your hair goals.

What are the different sizes of curling irons?

Not sure which curling iron size you need? We created this curling iron size guide to help you style your hair perfectly. From ½-inch to 1 1/2-inch curling irons, here’s everything you need to know about curling iron sizes.

⅜-inch curling iron creates tight, spiral curls.

The tiniest curling iron size out there is a ⅜-inch, and it’s perfect for creating tight, spiral curls. People with short hair will benefit from this small barrel curling iron, but that doesn’t mean folks with long hair can’t use this size — your curls will just be small and tight. Keep in mind that if you have long, straight hair, it will take significantly longer to style your whole head with this barrel size.

Best for: short, thin hair

Creates: tight, spiral curls

½-inch curling iron creates tight, ringlet spiral curls.

Depending on your hair length and texture, a ½ inch curling iron can create tight, ringlet spiral curls if you have long, straight hair or loose waves on short to chin-length hair. This size of styling tool works best to enhance naturally curly hair.

Best for: Short to chin-length, naturally curly hair

Creates: tight, ringlet spiral curls on long hair or beach waves on short hair

⅝-inch curling iron creates tight curls.

Create natural-looking curls with a ⅝-inch curling iron. Embrace the bouncy spiral style that creates volume on straight hair. This barrel size also helps enhance naturally curly hair and adds more texture.

Best for: medium to long hair

Creates: tight curls

¾-inch curling iron creates vintage, textured curls.

Transform your hair texture to create glamorous Hollywood waves using a ¾-inch curling iron barrel. This curling iron size is great for those with thin or thick hair. It also works best if you have shoulder-length hair to create perfectly polished curls.

Best for: shoulder-length hair

Creates: vintage, textured curls

1-inch curling iron create define waves or full curls.

A 1-inch curling iron is the standard and most versatile barrel size. This barrel size is not too big or small, which makes it the perfect size for all hair types and lengths. You can create loose waves on shorter hair or beachy waves to full curls on medium to longer hair.

Best for: all hair types and lengths

Creates: loose waves to full curls

1 ¼-inch curling iron creates loose curls and waves.

The 1 ¼-inch curling iron creates loose curls and waves on medium to long hair. This barrel size creates a slight bend on short hair. Hair stylists love using this barrel size for more natural, lived-in waves.

Best for: all hair types

Creates: loose curls and waves

1 ½-inch curling iron creates big, volumizing curls.

Looking for big, volumizing curls? The 1 ½-inch curling iron adds texture while gently curling each strand. It’s also one of the best for creating those coveted beach waves. This barrel size is best for folks with shoulder-length hair or longer.

Best for: shoulder length or longer hair

Creates: big, volumizing curls

1 ¾-inch curling iron creates big, loose waves.

While it’s not easily accessible, the 1 3⁄4-inch curling iron is worth having in your styling toolkit to create big, loose waves. This large curling iron barrel creates a slight bend on short hair and dream waves on long hair.

Best for: short to long hair

Creates: big, loose waves

2-inch curling iron creates relaxed, loose waves.

The large and mighty 2-inch curling iron can create the ultimate blowout look or relaxed, loose waves depending on the length of hair. This large barrel size adds volume and slight waves to long, straight hair or loose waves to medium-length hair.

Best for: medium to long straight hair

Creates: relaxed, loose waves

The relationship between curling iron barrel size and hair length

The right curling iron size for you will vary depending on your hair length. People with shorter hair should opt for smaller barrel sizes to create the ultimate curl or wave. Stick to curling iron sizes under 1 inch to style your hair length. If you have medium to long hair, larger barrel sizes over 1 ½ inches are more suited for your hair length. 1-inch curling irons are the neutral ground when it comes to sizes — people with short, medium, or long hair can all use this curling iron size.

The relationship between curling iron barrel size and hairstyle

Different sizes of curling irons will result in various hairstyles .

For example:

  • 2-inch curling irons create loose, beachy waves.
  • ⅜-inch curling irons will create tight curls.

The larger the curling iron barrel, the looser the waves will be:

  • If you’re looking to achieve tight, ringlet curls, stick to a barrel size between ⅜ and ½ inch.
  • Create bouncy, voluminous curls with a 1 ¼ or 1 ½ barrel size.

Hair tip: The exact curl or wave you achieve will vary depending on your hair type and the temperature you set your styling tool.

Is a curling iron vs. wand better?

While curling irons and curling wands look similar in shape, they create different hairstyles and use different techniques. Curling irons are designed with a clamp you use to create the curl or wave. Curling wands are designed without a clamp, but still have the same barrel sizes.

So is a curling iron vs. wand better? The answer comes down to the look you’re hoping to achieve.

  • Curling irons create smoother curls due to the clamp, which keeps each strand of hair in place.

Wands give a more relaxed, lived-in result.

FAQ: Curling iron sizes

Deciding between the different curling iron sizes can be tricky. Here are a few answers to common curling iron questions.

What is the standard size of a curling iron?

The 1-inch curling iron is the universal and standard size for styling tools. This is the most versatile curling iron size because it works on all hair lengths to create defined waves or full curls.

Should I use a 1- or 1-¼-inch curling iron?

One-inch curling irons create defined waves or full curls, whereas 1 ¼-inch curling irons create loose curls or defined waves. The size of curling iron you choose depends on personal preference, hair length, and desired type of curl.

Is a ¾- or 1-inch curling iron better?

¾-inch curling irons are better for tight curls, but if you’re looking for defined waves or full curls, then the 1-inch barrel size is for you.

Final thoughts

There are many different curling iron sizes to choose from to create any look, from tight curls to loose waves. While a 1-inch curling iron is the standard size, barrel sizes range from ⅜ inch to 2 inches. Create big, volumizing curls with a 1 ¼ or 1 ½-inch curling iron or opt for ringlets with a ½-inch barrel. Regardless if you choose a curling iron vs. wand, make sure you are using a heat protectant to keep your hair healthy.  You can curl your hair at home, but for even better results, we recommend visiting a hairstylist near you for the ultimate look.

How to Curl Short Hair: 5 Easy Techniques That Make Strands Look Thick and Bouncy

W hether you've been rocking a pixie cut for years or you've just trimmed your tresses into a stylish crop or bob, short hair can flatter all face shapes and shed years from your overall appearance. But when it comes to styling short hair with curls, you might find yourself with more questions than answers. And since you have less hair to work with when it's shorter, this impacts the techniques you can use to create everything from bouncy coils to loose spirals. That's why we tapped two pro hairstylists for their tips on how to curl short hair. From heatless tricks to the best way to use a curling iron on short locks, you'll find everything you need here to add gorgeous curls to short strands.

How curls enhance short hair

Curls can work wonders for all types of short hair, from adding texture and body to limper locks to playing up your best facial features with their placement. "Adding curls to shorter hair can really amp up your style by bringing in some movement and volume, giving off a more feminine and playful vibe," says Rogerio Cavalcante , hairstylist and owner of The Second Floor Salon in New York City. "This is awesome if you're looking to boost thickness, especially for those with fine or thin hair." Those with a short, thicker mane can also benefit from curls. "If you have thick hair, adding curls can help tame and gather the hair into place," says Bridget Brager , hairstylist and Rodan + Fields ambassador, who's worked with Sarah Paulson and Gwyneth Paltrow.

With the right prep and styling products, curls can also offer a way to look put-together and polished with minimal effort on, say, day two or day three after your initial styling session. "They make your daily routine a bit easier since curls can keep your hair looking styled even on days when you skip the wash," says Cavalcante.

That said, if you're looking to rock a short curly style, it's very important to get the right haircut. "Your stylist must be sure to look at your best features and add layers and framing accordingly," says Brager. Ideally, you want your styled curls to sit in such a way that they draw attention to your eyes, your cheekbones or whatever your favorite feature may be.

How to curl short hair

Whether you prefer going heatless with your hair styling or you love that a curling iron or wand offers a quick shortcut for bouncy ringlets and waves, there are plenty of ways how to curl short hair. These stylist how-tos and tricks will make you and your strands look stunning.

1. How to curl short hair with a curling iron

To get your short hair ready for curls, begin with damp, clean hair, and apply a volumizing mousse, like Authentic Beauty Concept Amplify ( Buy from Amazon, $28 ), ensuring even distribution, says Cavalcante. "This mousse not only adds volume but also provides hold while keeping your hair manageable," he says. Plus, it also functions as a heat protectant.

Next, blow-dry hair, then grab your curling iron or wand. "For short hair, a medium-sized wand, around 1 or 1¼  inches, works best since a larger barrel might not suit shorter lengths," says Cavalcante. And he also cautions to "keep the temperature around 350 degrees to avoid damaging your hair." As you work your way around your whole head, wrap each section of hair around the wand, leaving 1″ of hair at the ends unwrapped. Finish with a texturizing spray, especially if your hair is naturally thin or very straight. "This will add that extra oomph to your curls and complete your stylish, voluminous look," he adds.

Another pro tip? "If you hold your wand horizontally and wrap your hair to curl it, your curls will appear wider," says Brager. "If you hold your iron vertically, your curls will be skinnier and stay closer to the head. This is important to know so you can achieve the best shape and movement for your short hairstyle using a wand." Play around with both techniques to get a sense of what end result you like better.

2. How to curl short hair with finger waves

Finger waves are very versatile but can be especially suited for those with really short styles. Start with clean, damp hair - no drying needed - and apply a styling mousse for hold and texture. Then, "use a fine-tooth comb to create deep waves, curving the hair in an ‘S' pattern and securing each wave with clips as you go," says Cavalcante. Let the waves set naturally for a few hours or overnight, or consider speeding up the process with a frizz-fighting Bonnet attachment, like Gold ‘N Hot Bonnet Dryer Attachment ( Buy from Sally Beauty, $15.99 ), if desired. Once the waves have set, gently remove the clips. "Finish with a light hairspray for hold and smoothness, using your fingers to refine the waves as needed," says Cavalcante.

For an in-depth tutorial on how to create finger waves, check out the below video from @Milabuco on YouTube.

3. How to curl short hair with *this* heatless method

"A simple and heatless method for curling short hair involves dividing it into two sections from the forehead to the back of the neck," says Cavalcante, which can be done by creating a middle part. Then, he says to begin on one side, and take two 1-inch sections of strands near the front of the face and twist them together. After making the first twist, add a new strand to the bottom part of the twist, similar to a french braid and continue until you reach the hair near the neck." Secure with a hair tie, scrunchie, or clip, and repeat on the other side. Let hair set in the twists overnight so "you'll wake up to beautifully curled hair," says Cavalcante.

In a hurry but still want to go light on the heat? "For a quicker result, spray hair with a texturizing spray before twisting, use a hairdryer for five minutes, and let it cool for 10 to 20 minutes before releasing the curls," says Cavalcante.

4. How to curl short hair with rollers or flexi rods

It might have been a while since you've used sponge rollers or rods, but they're still super-effective in creating heatless curls on short haircuts. Brager recommends flexi rods, like Red by Kiss Flexi Rods ( Buy from Amazon, $5.49 ), because they offer a wide variety of thickness and lengths to choose from. That way, you can hone in on the version that will give you the size and tightness of coils or waves that you're looking for, though you might have to experiment a bit to find your ideal match.

"Focus on using them on the longest hair, typically your top section," she says. After removing the rods, Brager likes to use a curl cream, like Rodan + Fields Define+ Curl Cream ( Buy from Rodan + Fields, $39 ), to smooth or rack through hair roots to ends. "It gives a nice finish, adds separation and texture, protects your hair from the elements, and reduces frizz and flyways."

Check out the below video from YouTuber Alisa Molina to see how easy it is to use flexi rods on short hair.

5. How to curl short hair with pin curls

If you thought this tried-and-true method was only for longer lengths, think again. A few tweaks can make it easy for those with short hair to achieve pin curls. To start, prep clean, damp hair with a leave-in treatment for smoothing, followed by applying a soft gel or mousse for hold. Then, part hair and divide strands into 2-inch sections. Wrap or curl each section, one by one, around one or two of your fingers. Roll the hair in the sections up to your scalp (or where you want the curls to start), then gently pull your finger(s) away and clip your section with a flat duckbill clip.

"I suggest wrapping all the hair away from the face and setting," says Brager. If you want a super-retro look, she advises curling hair toward your face. Next, use a diffuser to dry your hair, or clip your curls flat to your head so you can sleep in them as they dry. After curls have set, remove the clips and brush hair using a boar bristle brush and mist with a workable hairspray to lock curls in place. "Depending on hair type, you might want to smooth a light cream or balm over the style and brush through to smooth the hair to a perfect finish," adds Brager.

To see pin curls being created in action, watch the below pin curl tutorial from  The Knit Yorker  YouTube channel.

Tips for making curls for short hair last longer

You might think the key to long-lasting waves and coils is simply finishing off your look with a strong, flexible hairspray, but that's only half the equation, whether you're on the go during the day or want to preserve your style overnight. "Making curls last longer starts in the prep," says Brager, so set yourself up for success by using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. She also suggesting applying a mousse, leave-in conditioner or gel that will provide some hold before styling your hair. And if you'll be using heat to create your curls, it's best to mist on a heat protectant too.

Since the weather is a factor in how curls can last, you can also up your product game if you know it's likely to rain or be very hot, for example. "If you find yourself in a highly humid environment, use humidity-blocking products before styling," says Cavalcante.

Finally, try to keep your hands off your curls. Too much touching can make them fall flat and lose their shape.

New to this old favorite? Ryan Trygstad , celebrity hair stylist and co-owner of Mark Ryan Salon in New York City, recommends using rollers rather than a curling iron "to create natural lift at the root." The stylist recommends hot rollers for “any length,” adding that they’re “great for creating a Cindy Crawford, ’90s supermodel body wave.” Then there are Velcro rollers, which are self-gripping in your hair. “Velcro rollers are more to maintain volume and use during blow-drying to ‘set’ the style or maintain volume to each section,” Trygstad says.

As for which size roller to use, the stylist recommends getting a set with different ones so you can find the right shape for your length and desired style. “Larger rollers will create less volume, while smaller will create more volume,” he says.

Most importantly, remember that rollers are always used on dry hair— especially hot rollers. “You should wrap the ends of the hair around the roller and roll them to the root,” Trygstad says.

Now, you’re ready to roll—literally. Keep scrolling for the 13 best hair rollers we love.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

travel size curling iron for short hair

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

travel size curling iron for short hair

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

travel size curling iron for short hair

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

travel size curling iron for short hair

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

travel size curling iron for short hair

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

travel size curling iron for short hair

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

travel size curling iron for short hair

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

travel size curling iron for short hair

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
