There She Goes Again

17 of the Coolest Things to Do in Corning, NY

Looking for all the best things to do in Corning, NY? I’ve got you covered! After multiple trips to this Crystal City, I think I know a thing or two about what to do.

The first time I ever went to Corning was for a conference back in 2018! My friend and I spent our free time wandering around its downtown and checking out all it had to offer. Since then I’ve been back a handful of times and have enjoyed seeing how it’s changed over the last few years.

When it comes to the Finger Lakes region , I like to think of Corning as sort of the unofficial capital. Like you can’t come here and not at least stop off at the famous Corning Glass of Museum. And if you’re already planning to stop in, you might as well start looking up other things to do in Corning. When you do that, you’ll realize you need a lot longer than a brief afternoon!

Check below for my favorite picks:

Quick Corning Travel Tips

  • Getting in: I’ve always driven to Corning. It’s about 4 hours from Philly and NYC. If you fly, the closest airport is in Elmira Corning Regional Airport, and it’s still a 15-minute drive.
  • Money Matters: You should be fine with credit cards wherever you are. One or two places might be cash only, so have $20-40 on hand just in case as well as some cash for a hotel tip.
  • Where to Stay: Downtown Corning is best so you can leave your car parked and walk most places. I’ve always stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn , which is right by CMoG and just across the bridge from Gaffer District.
  • Getting Around: You can walk most places in Corning; but I recommend having a car to visit nearby towns and wineries!

The Best Things to Do in Corning, NY

Corning Museum of Glass - things to do in corning ny

1. Enjoy all things crysal at the Corning Museum of Glass

As I mentioned in my intro, if there’s one thing you don’t want to miss in Corning or even all of the Finger Lakes region, it’s visiting the beautiful Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) . The city has a long history with glass that goes all the way back to the later 1800s. Its nickname is Crystal City because of its massive glass production and innovative glassmaking techniques. For example, Pyrex was invented here!

Anyway in addition to practical inventions, Corning was home to a ton of glass designers, and CMoG celebrates both components. There are two ways I recommend enjoying the museum:

Corning Museum of Glass - things to do in corning ny

Wander through the various exhibits

The first is to, of course, enjoy all the exhibits. They’re on the second and third floors and largely have remained the same. My favorite is the 35 Centuries of Glass exhibit where you can see how glassmaking has evolved around the world. I had a cool moment looking at the Venetian display since I’d just been to a glass museum in Murano six months prior to being at this one!

For those of you that love a unique photo moment, I feel like the Contemporary Art + Design exhibit is where most people take photos (myself included). Something about all the white space and colorful glass creations make you want to point and shoot.

Try your hand at glassblowing

The next, of course, is to try your hand at glassblowing. I distinctly remember watching in utter awe as glassblowers at Renaissance Faires expertly made glass roses and vases with what seemed like total ease. I don’t think I’d ever thought of trying it myself!

However, CMoG has a really fun opportunity for anyone to try their hand at glassblowing. Don’t worry – staff is extremely hands on and unless you go rogue, there’s no way to even get close to hurting yourself. While I was there, we made glass pumpkins.

It takes about a day to cool completely, so plan to visit earlier on in your trip if you wan to pick it up in person. Otherwise they offer complimentary shipping.

poppleton bakery - things to do in corning ny

2. Start your morning with breakfast at a charming Cafe

Ok, so surprisingly there are not a ton of places open for breakfast in Corning. There were two that we really liked, and that’s Poppleton Bakery & Cafe and Soul Full Cup Coffeehouse.

Poppleton has a pretty expansive menu for both breakfast and lunch, and everything is made fresh from scratch. For breakfast, think everything from savory crepes to omelettes to bagels more! Definitely do not skip their baked goods – I got something pumpkin that had the most delicious dollop of cream cheese frosting on top. YUM!

Soul Full Cup is perfect for those that just want really damn good coffee. They’ve taken their roasting and brewing seriously since 1996 and only use ethically-sourced beans. Bonus they’re open as early as 7AM during the week.

bridge street bridge - things to do in corning ny

3. Check out the views from Bridge Street Bridge

This is especially easy to do if you stay at the Hilton. Walk over Bridge Street Bridge for one of the prettiest views of Corning, especially in the fall when all the foliage is bursting. It’s very short and easy to cross, so don’t skip it!

4. Treat yourself to dinner at a restaurant that doesn’t want you to tip.

You know with how frustrating tipping culture has become in the United States, you’d think more and more restaurants would adjust their prices, pay their staff a living wage, and entice diners with a tip-free experience.

This is why I’m obsessed with The Quincy Exchange . Not only do they not require tipping, they discourage it. There’s no cheeky tip bar at the hostess stand nor is there even a line for tip on the receipt. Staff is paid a living wage with both health benefits and continued educational opportunities.

Now, that’s all great but what makes this restaurant even better is that the atmosphere and the food are top tier. Located in what was once a bank building, the interior balances feeling both spacious and lush. Think white walls and clean lines with a tropical accent wall and elements of green throughout including with its U-shaped bar.

And the food . Foodwise alone makes it one of my favorite restaurants in Corning . I still think about my duck breast and the pumpkin soup my friend ordered. The menu changes slightly to reflect the season and all ingredients are homemade and fresh. I promise any photo you see from their website and social media tastes as good as it looks.

And if you can’t stop in for dinner, they offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays!

5. Stroll around Gaffer District

I’m going to be honest – I’ve looked at a map and been here multiple times, and I couldn’t tell you where exactly Gaffer District’s boundaries are and aren’t. It’s pretty much downtown Corning, and it’s where all the boutiques, restaurants, galleries, cafes, museums and more are. Most top things to do in Corning are in Gaffer District, and the famous spot often used in photographs is known as Centerway Square.

The whole concept of Gaffer District began following the devastating Flood of 1972 when locals got together to restore downtown Corning, and it has been going strong ever since. All in all, they have about 250 businesses in this one walkable area.

I really enjoy just meandering along the streets and popping into all sorts of random businesses. You never know what kind of gems you can find! Also a fun fact: there’s a Tommy Hilfiger store on Market Street because the designer is from nearby Elmira!

6. Explore one of the top museums in the northeast

CMoG is, of course a must-see museum in Corning, but I strongly recommend making time for the gorgeous Rockwell Museum as well. There’s a reason it’s a Smithsonian affiliate!

Located in Old City Hall, the museum began when locals Bob and Hertha Rockwell gifted their large American art collection to the town. Using this initial collection as inspiration, the Rockwell created exhibits answer the question, “What is American art?” They take great care to consciously expand that meaning, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing what new exhibits they feature each time I visit. My favorite has to be Blanket Stories by Marie Watt seen above.

heritage village of the southern finger lakes - things to do in corning ny

7. Visit the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes

Ok, ok one more museum, but if you can’t tell, I am a museum fan. And the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes is an open air museum! Step back in time to see what life was like during the early days of Corning’s existence. The little village includes Benjamin Patterson Inn, Brownown Schoolhouse, Cooley Blacksmih Shop, Wixon Log Cabin, Starr Barn, Joiner’s Shop, a wood shed, and gardens.

If you want to join a tour, they run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday a noon; just call 607-937-5281 to reserve. Even if you can’t join a tour, you can walk around the grounds a bit and see some of the buildings’ exteriors.

8. Get outside

Corning may not be on one of the famous Finger Lakes, but there are no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors. For those looking to get a run or walk in, Spencer Crest Nature Center is part of SUNY Corning Community College and has over 7 miles of trails. Plus, there’s a nice trail you can walk along the Chemung River on CMoG’s side.

9. Pop over to the Painted Post Depot and Museum

Technically part of the Heritage Village, the Painted Post Depot is actually a bit out of town. It’s a nice little museum that talks about the Village of Painted Post and Town of Erwin, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a small Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

10. Walk through the magical Watkins Glen

One of my favorite places in the Finger Lakes, Watkins Glen State Park is absolutely is stunning. Walk along the gorge trail to see all sorts of waterfalls and lush scenery. It’s especially stunning in the fall with all the colors changing and leaves falling.

The town of Watkins Glen is also very cute, so after you’ve walked through, stick around for breakfast or lunch. You can also use this is a base to explore the wineries around Seneca Lake.

11. Check out the very underrated Bath

About 30 minutes from Corning, we stopped in Bath on our way out of the Finger Lakes to get a nice greasy spoon breakfast from Chat-A-Whyle and to check out the town a bit. While it has definitely seen more bustling days, I still found the downtown area quite charming. Be sure to stop into Betty Kay Bakeshop for some treats, and if you can, check out the interior of First Presbyterian Church . It’s one of the few churches in the country that has a Tiffany Glass sanctuary!

It’s also home to the Steuben County Fair , which is the longest continually running fair the United States, so if you want to visit, make sure to time your visit for mid-August.

12. Pop over to Elmira

Only about 20 minutes from Corning, Elmira is an up and coming town with one very famous connection – the one and only Mark Twain. He married Elmira local, Olivia Langdon, and they spent their marriage summering at Quarry Farm, which is now the Center for Mark Twain Studies . You can see a statue of Olivia at Elmira College and visit their graves at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Some other things on my list to do are to check out the Art Walk and Arnot Art Museum. I also really love the food at Rye Restaurant .

places to visit corning ny

13. Hammondsport (~30 min)

If you’re visiting Corning, you absolutely have to make sure you get over to Hammondsport . The town itself is right on Keuka Lake, so you can take out kayaks or go for a swim if it’s warm. There are a bunch of cute eateries and, of course, you’re close to a ton of great wineries around the lake itself.

Seasonal Things to Do in Corning

14. run at the wineglass marathon.

Every year, Corning puts on the Wineglass Marathon and I can say I’m running the half in this year! You can choose between the marathon, half marathon, 8K, or 5K, or just come to cheer on the runners. I’m excited for the medal, which friends have told me is one of the prettiest.

15. Come for GlassFest

Glassfest is how Corning kicks off the summer. Usually in late May, it’s a 3-day weekend event that celebrates all things Corning and glass with art vendors, live music, glass exhibits, and more. You can also expect a fireworks show on Saturday night of the event. I haven’t been to the Finger Lakes in May, so I’m marking this for a future visit.

places to visit corning ny

16. Enjoy the Days of Incandescence

Occurring towards the end of October, The Days of Incandescence celebrates Corning’s role in the creation of the light bulb. You see, back in the day, the Thomas Edison reached out to Corning Flint Glass Works to help create a light bulb for his newly patented incandescent lamp. Not only did the glass need to be heat resistant, the bulb shape had to be blown by hand into a specific shape that could not use a mold.

The weekend celebrations also incorporate some spookier elements given its proximity to Halloween. During your visit, you can go on actor-guided walking tours, cemetery tours, and something called Archibald’s Libations Crawl.

In general, it sounds like a lot of fun and focuses on taking guests back to the 1880s.

17. Celebrate Pride

Thanks to the fairly new Souther Finger Lakes Pride (SoFLX Pride), there’s a growing amount of LGBTQIA+ activities all through the year with the biggest event being its Pride Festival in June! The most recent festival had all sorts of vendors, a 21+ Garden, live performances, an LGBQ+ History walking tour, drag sets, and more. Keep an eye on their Instagram page for any and all upcoming events.

And there you have it – all the best things to do in Corning, NY! I can’t wait to go up again and add even more to this list. Let me know if I’m missing anything below.

And yes, the staff really do dress up and play up their roles to make it feel as authentic as possible.

In particular, The Benjamin Patterson Inn (also called The Painted Post Tavern) is the oldest building in the village and dates back to ye olde 1796.

It also has its own unique and interesting history since the area is named after the Gaffers who were highly skilled master glass blowers.

In fact, you can learn all about them at the Museum of Glass (listed above), which is, of course, in the Gaffer District!

You’ll even find a ton of amazing murals and sculptures around the district that reflect the rich history here.

6. Keuka Lake

One of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes overlooking Keuka Lake.

Although a visit to Keuka Lake is considered one of the best things to do in Corning NY, it is actually a 40-minute drive from the city.

However, if you’re able to get here, it is worth the drive and the perfect way to spend a day by yourself, on a date, or with the family since this is one of the best lakes in New York .

Because this lake is a popular spot for water sports including boating, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Of course, swimming is also a fun thing to do here too.

But, if you don’t have your own gear, there are numerous places where you can rent equipment on the lake for the day.

Alternatively, there are several parks that surround the lake, including the titular Keuka Lake State Park, which is ideal for a day of mountain biking or hiking in the finger lakes .

As Keuka Lake is in the Finger Lake district, you’ll also find many vineyards nearby where you can stop in for a wine tasting and/or souvenir at one of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes .

7. Goat Yoga at ZiegenVine Homestead

Goat hanging out on a yoga mat after a goat yoga session in Corning.

What is goat yoga, you ask? Well, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: yoga with goats! Well, kind of.

See, while you do yoga, the goats (typically kids) get to wander around and interact with you. They climb on you, butt heads, and admire your stellar technique.

Okay, maybe not the last one, but a girl can dream.

Anyway, goat yoga might sound like it’s just a bit of silly fun – and it is, fun, I mean – but it also has health benefits.

Because interacting with animals lowers your cortisol (stress) levels and increases your dopamine and serotonin (happiness) levels.

This ultimately makes you feel good and euphoric, and stress-free. Which I think we can all agree is a good thing!

So if this sounds like your kind of thing or something you’d like to try out then try out goat yoga at the ZiegenVine Homestead.

For anyone feeling stressed or in need of a pick-me-up, this is easily one of the most fun and best things to do in Corning NY!

Address: 8469 Oak Hill Rd, Savona, NY 14879, United States

8. Little Joe Tower

Standing tall and proud above the skyline of Corning is Little Joe Tower, although there’s not much that’s little about it since it’s 187 feet tall!

However, this tower was constructed as part of the Corning Glass Works.

So, painted on the outside of this white tower is the silhouette of Little Joe the glassblower, a symbol of the iconic glassworks operation and where the tower gets its name.

And the reason Little Joe is so tall is that the company used to stretch out the glass for their thermometer tubes along the length of the tower.

Fast forward a couple of years and the tower was fully renovated with a fresh coat of paint a la 2015.

In truth though, Little Joe is actually over one hundred years old and stands as an iconic symbol of the city and its crafty history!

Finding Little Joe is also easy since there aren’t exactly a ton of 187-foot tall towers in Corning.

And if you can’t seem to see it, just head between Brisco Bridge and Bridge Street Bridge on the south side of Chemung River.

Trust me, it’s worth making the trip over here since this local landmark is one of the best things to do in Corning NY!

Address: Chestnut St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Open all day every day.

Price: Free

9. Hand + Foot

Craft cocktails from Hand + Foot in Corning NY which is one of the top things to do in Corning NY.

Hand + Foot is where the good people of Corning NY go to spend some quality time together, and they invite you to do the same.

And you should since the sense of community is strong here, whether you’re a local or just visiting. In fact, that’s exactly what makes stopping by Hand + Foot one of the best things to do in Corning NY!

One of the other reasons has to be the drinks menu. Because this thing is extensive with a capital “E”.

Yup, there are cocktails, spirits, wine, and bottled beers available from all over the world. There’s also an INSANE amount of Kentucky bourbon and more.

So, if you can think of it, chances are Hand + Foot has got it.

There’s good food too, with all your favorite home-cooked crowd pleasers making the menu like brisket, fish fry, buttermilk chicken, and plenty of sandwiches.

Plus, there are a lot of Asian-inspired entrees on offer like Korean rice cakes, poke bowls, fried rice, and noodle dishes too.

You’ll also love that the name of this warm and inviting bistro comes from a card game played by the family that owns the place.

Because sitting down in a friendly social environment to play cards is what inspired the creation of this incredible cafe.

Address: 69 W Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Open Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm and Friday/Saturday from 11:30 am to 11:00 pm.

Price: Entrees start at around $12.00 each.

10. Market Street Brewing Co.

Selection of four different beers with pretzels.

Looking to whet your whistle with some finely crafted local beers in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere? If so then head on down to the Market Street Brewing Co.!

This family-owned brewery and pub have been brewing and selling their own beer for 25+ years on good old Market Street in central Corning.

And when they’re not making and pouring their own alcohol, the folks at MSBC bring in guest beers from other craft breweries in the area.

So, visitors can enjoy lagers, IPAs, and dark ales as well as special seasonal beers on tap.

What, not in the mood for a frosty cold one? Well, then you can check out their well-rounded cocktail menu which is full of a ton of fruity favorites.

Also, there’s always wine, amirite?

Because like some of the best breweries in NYC, part of what makes Market Street Brewing Co. one of the best things to do in Corning NY is its history.

In fact, MSBC’s building is an award-winning historical renovation. So, the bar is entirely made from antique pieces repurposed from different demolition projects.

Plus, part of the mirror on the bar was even once a wedding gift owned by Prince Charles and Princess Diana of England. So, yeah, this local pub has a genuine Royal connection which is pretty damn impressive in good old Corning, NY.

Address: 63 W Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm and Friday/Saturday from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm.

11. The Cellar

Anyone looking for the hottest meal ticket in town should take advantage of one of the best things to do in Corning NY and head down to this exciting eatery!

See, at The Cellar their goal is to create the finest dining experience possible for their guests.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that passion, honesty, integrity, and excellence are all part of their core values since they’re super serious about their food!

But what food do they serve? Well, a little bit of everything. No, not a buffet. Think fusion!

Because the folks at The Cellar are all about modern dishes with creative flair – made to the highest standard – that you’re sure to remember.

We’re talking small plates with lamb lollipops, tempura sushi rolls, and Wagyu tallow fries. So, imagine wood planks piled high with caramelized walnuts, pickled fennel, and dried figs.

Don’t worry; they’re not above serving a plate of chicken and waffles too.

It’s just that it comes generously adorned with Ithaca Cheddar and chives and drizzled in sriracha maple syrup and smoked pepper butter that will BLOW YOUR MIND.

In fact, your Insta account and stomach will both be grateful in equal measure.

Address: 21 W Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Open Monday through Thursday from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm and on Friday and Saturday from 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Price: Entrees start at $21.00 each.

12. Dippity Do Dahs Homemade Ice Cream

Four scoops of homemade ice cream in a bowl.

Caramel Latte, Cake Batter, Coconut Almond Fudge, PB & J, Maple Walnut, and Blue Raspberry Sorbet. Is your mouth watering as much as mine is right now?

Well, that might just be because Dippity Do Dahs homemade ice cream parlor is the place where sugary dreams come true…literally!

Starting life on Memorial Day in 2013, Dippity Do Dahs’ owners drew inspiration from enjoying ice cream while on a family vacation at a local dairy farm.

Now they have 22 signature flavors that can be served to you in a number of ways.

So, you can have a traditional cone, a milkshake, an ice cream sandwich with cookies, a cake, or even an ice cream pizza – whole or by the slice!

However, the creativity doesn’t stop there since Dippity Do Dah has several seasonal flavors to help make the holidays extra special, like Caramel Apple Pie or Pumpkin for the fall!

Therefore, grabbing a couple of scoops here is definitely one of the best things to do in Corning NY for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Address: 46 E Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Open Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm and Friday/Saturday from 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Price: Ice cream starts at $4.75 each.

13. Palace Theatre

Wanna catch a movie? Then head on over to Corning’s very own local picture house! Because catching a movie here is deffo one of the best things to do in Corning NY in the evening.

Situated in the historic Gaffer District on good old West Market Street, this movie theatre is not your average multiplex.

In fact, the folks at Palace Theatre put an emphasis on comfort, convenience, and a pleasant old-timey vibe.

So, each of their two auditoriums (which they call houses) feature seats that are larger and more comfortable than in regular cinemas. It also doesn’t hurt that each theater can seat anywhere between 75 and 100 people.

Some of the seats were even purpose-built with small tables for all your fave snacks. Just be sure to get there early as this place is incredibly popular.

This delightful theater is also older than it looks. So, while this business first opened for business in its current state in 2009, it was originally known as the Little Princess Theatre way back in the 1800s!

Yup, now that’s what I call a local legacy.

Address: 17 W Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Shows are Monday through Thursday at around 6:00 pm, Fridays at around 6:00 pm/9:00 pm, Saturdays at around 3:00 pm/6:00 pm/9:00 pm, and Sundays at around 3:00 pm/6:00 pm.

Price: Tickets start at $9.90 for an adult.

14. National Soaring Museum

Situated between Corning and nearby Elmira, the National Soaring Museum is perfect for anyone interested in aviation and its history.

Because the region – and especially Elmira – has a long history of “soaring” that dates back to 1930. In fact, Elmira is known as the Soaring Capital of America.

And The National Soaring Museum is particularly unique because it is one of only two museums in the entire United States that focuses on motorless aircraft.

So, visitors will have a great time exploring their extensive glider collection, some of which date back to the 1890s.

There is even a Hall of Fame that has information about all the important people in the world of Soaring.

Plus, did I mention you can actually ride on a real glider? Yup, told you this was one of the best things to do in Corning NY!

Just be aware that you will have to arrange the flight ahead of time (for an extra cost), but it’s an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience that is 110% worth it IMHO.

Address: 51 Soaring Hill Dr, Elmira, NY 14903, United States

Hours: Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Price: Tickets start at $9.00 for adults.

15. West End Gallery

Modern art gallery with white walls and vibrant paintings and one of the best things to do in Beacon NY.

If you love art, then a trip to the West End Gallery is definitely one of the best things to do in Corning NY.

Located on Historic Market Street, this gallery has been operating in Corning for well over 40 years.

Plus, you’ll find a wide variety of art on display at the West End Gallery in a range of mediums and styles.

And any frequent visitors out there will know that the gallery is always changing up their exhibitions and featuring something new.

In fact, The West End Gallery has something for everyone with displays that feature ceramics, glass, oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Heck, there are even some bronze sculptures and wood carvings too.

Truth be told though, most exhibits feature specific artists, although they occasionally do group showcases around specific themes.

However, for true connoisseurs, private viewings are available. But, if you’re just curious or passing through, walk-ins are more than welcome.

Address: 12 W Market St, Corning, NY 14830, United States

Hours: Walk-ins are welcome from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm every Tuesday through Saturday.

Price: Free unless you purchase something.

Things to do in Corning NY: The Ultimate Corning Travel Guide

May 6, 2021

Anna Hammerschmidt

Corning, New York is the perfect getaway in the southern Finger Lakes. Home to the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning attracts visitors from around the world. While the Corning Museum of Glass is reason enough to plan a trip, it is not the only reason to visit Corning NY. Corning has a lot to offer in both its history of glass making and its technological advancements in the field via Corning Incorporated. Yet, Corning is more than just glass. There is so much to discover in this small city on the Chemung River. There is no shortage of things to do in Corning NY from Corning’s charming Gaffer District, experiencing glass blowing at the Corning Museum of Glass and even a visit to a Smithsonian affiliated museum.

Corning, New York is one of the first destinations I visited in the Finger Lakes and it left me craving more. It doesn’t have the lakes, wineries, or waterfalls this region is associated with, yet that’s what makes it so unique. Corning has a hip city vibe, with small-town charm and world-class museums. Visiting Corning allows you to experience a different side of the Finger Lakes. If you’re looking for what to do in Corning NY, this guide covers it!

Table of Contents

About Corning

Known as America’s crystal city, Corning was put on the map from innovation in glass technology. Corning has been at the forefront of all things to do with glass technology. In this small city in New York, plenty of glass advancements were made. This is where the light bulbs for Thomas Edison were made, the home to pyrex, and where the glass on your phone screen came from (gorilla glass). Every day, you are surrounded by glass technology that was developed in Corning.

Now you can experience glass first hand at the Corning Museum of Glass, or by wandering through the Gaffer District. In glassblowing, Gaffer means master glassblower. Everywhere you turn in Corning, you will be reminded that this is a city known for its glass.

Where is Corning NY

Corning is a small city in Steuben County, New York, which is located in the Southern portion of the Finger Lakes region. While Corning is in the Finger Lakes region, it is not directly on a lake. Rather, it is situated on the banks of the Chemung River.

Distances to Corning from nearby cities:

  • Rochester NY – 106 miles (1h 37m)
  • Syracuse NY – 98 miles (2h 4m)
  • Scranton PA – 132 miles (2h 5m)
  • Buffalo NY – 125 miles (2h 15m)
  • Albany NY – 212 miles (3h 16m)
  • New York, NY – 249 miles (4h 16m)
  • Philadelphia, PA – 255 miles (4h)

When to Visit Corning

As many of the top things to do in Corning, New York are indoors, there is no bad time to visit Corning. Rain or shine, and any season of the year, Corning can be enjoyed year-round. Just be sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing for strolling through the historic Gaffer District. Corning is perhaps one of the best places in the Finger Lakes to visit year-round. The museums and shops are always open, so you won’t miss out on doing anything if you visit during the low season.

However, if you plan to spend time exploring other parts of the region on your visit, such as nearby Keuka Lake, experiencing the Finger Lakes Wine Country, or hiking at some of the Finger Lakes waterfalls , you should visit between late spring to early fall.

Top Things to Do in Corning NY

In order to see all the sites below, I recommend spending 2 days in Corning. This will allow you to see everything, without being rushed. However, if you want to spend a full day at one of the nearby lakes, you should plan for 3 days in Corning. If your time is limited, you can visit The Corning Museum of Glass and the Gaffer District on a day trip, or a road trip pitstop.

Explore the Gaffer District + Town of Corning

We spent quite a bit of time in the Gaffer District while in Corning. The Historical Gaffer District is the downtown area of Corning; it includes a pretty tree-lined street lined with shops, galleries, and restaurants. I spent hours meandering down Market Street, popping in and out of the shops. It seemed that every storefront in Corning had a story to tell. I kept stopping along my walk to appreciate the small details in the facades. Visiting the Gaffer District is one of the best things to do in Corning NY. Depending on how much time you have in Corning, you could do a quick walk or spend an entire afternoon exploring the Gaffer District.

There are over 50 local shops in Corning Gaffer District, meaning you have plenty of shopping ahead of you. I recommend wandering through the district, popping into any stores that catch your eye.

Here are a few recommended shops that you should not miss:

  • Bacalles Glass Shop
  • Crystal City Olive Oil
  • Dish & Co.

For a full list of the stores in Corning’s Gaffer District, click here .

Take a Walking Tour

To learn more about the Historic Gaffer District, there is a self-guided walking tour that highlights the area’s history and architecture. The tour begins at the Centerway Square clock tower, however, you can begin at any of the 19 landmarks in the Gaffer District.

Corning

Stop by Centerway Square

After checking out all the shops in Corning, be sure to stop by Centerway Square. Everyone seems to congregate in Centerway Square by the clock tower. It serves as a great meeting point in the Gaffer District. I enjoyed sitting in the square, people watching and appreciating all the greenery around me. There are plenty of tables to sit at, so this also makes a great spot to bring takeout from a local restaurant or a picnic.

During the summer months, they even have concerts on the stage at Centerway Square.

Corning

Visit the Corning Museum of Glass

The Corning Museum of Glass is one of my favorite museums I have ever been to. Something about this museum made me feel light and happy. Perhaps it’s the way the sun basks the museum with natural light. Whatever the reason, I have a newfound affection for glass from my visit to this museum. The Corning Museum of Glass should be #1 on your list of things to do in Corning.

Allow plenty of time to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. We were there for about 4 hours but I could have stayed longer. Yet 4 hours is enough time to check out the exhibits, watch the glass blowing demonstration, and partake in the make your own glass experience.

Advanced tickets are required for the Corning Museum of Glass. Get your ticket here !

Stroll through the Exhibits

Watch the Glass Blowing Demonstration

After checking out the museum, head to a live glass blowing demonstration . Watching the live glass blowing demonstration was amazing! The demonstration made me appreciate glass blowing even more, and gave a glimpse at what glassmakers do in the glass studio.

Corning

Make your own Glass

For a unique perspective of glass blowing, you can even make your own glass in the studio. You get to choose your project and assist in the creation of it. This is such a fun and interactive way to experience the Corning Museum of Glass. Doing the glass blowing experience was one of my favorite things to do in Corning NY, so be sure to include this in your Corning itinerary. Doing the make your own glass experience is an additional charge, yet it is worth it!

Relax in Centennial Park

Between museum hopping and strolling through the Gaffer District, take some time to relax in Centennial Park. Centennial Park, overlooking the Chemung River is a nice place to have a picnic or take a walk. Visiting Centennial Park is a great thing to do in Corning as it allows you to appreciate the landscape of the Southern Finger Lakes. Spending some time in Centennial Park is a great outdoor thing to do in Corning.

Corning

Happy Hour at Market Street Brewing Company

Great beer and great people can be found at Market Street Brewing Company . Upon entering the brewery, I noticed that Market Street Brewing Company had a combination of both “cool brewery” and “neighborhood hang out” type of vibe.

Corning

We got flights to sample the various beers from Market Street Brewing Company. My favorites include the Blackberry Lager and the Wrought Iron Red Ale. The Blackberry Lager is a light beer with notes of blackberry, and the Wrought Iron Red Ale has a full yet smooth flavor. Typically I am not an IPA drinker yet the Wheelhouse IPA was pleasantly surprising. The Wheelhouse IPA didn’t linger on the tongue or have an aftertaste that I tend to experience with IPAs.

Corning

If you are looking to visit more breweries, here are some others in Corning, New York:

  • Iron Flamingo Brewery
  • Liquid Shoes Brewing

View Little Joe Tower

Little Joe Tower is the symbol of Corning. The tower was originally used to create glass thermometer tubes, using gravity. The hot glass was pulled 196 feet up the tower, then it was cut and cooled to length. Now, however, Little Joe Tower stands as a landmark of Corning. The gaffer illustrated on the side of the tower symbolizes Corning’s glass-making status. The best view of Little Joe Tower can be found across the pedestrian bridge.

Corning

Head to Keuka Lake

While visiting Corning, New York, you may want to plan for some extra time in the area to spend an afternoon or day on the lake. I loved visiting Keuka Lake during my visit to Corning. It only takes about 35 minutes to get to Keuka Lake from Corning, making it an easy addition to your trip. Once at Keuka Lake, you can partake in water activities, such as paddleboarding and kayaking. This is one of the best things to do near Corning NY.

There are so many things to do on Keuka Lake, including visiting wineries and even taking a seaplane over the lake. You could definitely plan a whole day on the lake, or add a night in the town of Hammondsport , so you have more time to enjoy the lake activities.

Hammondsport

Other Things to do in Corning New York

If you have extra time and are looking for some more activities in Corning, check out these additional things to do in Corning.

Go Hiking at Spencer Crest Nature Center

You don’t need to venture far from Corning to enjoy the great outdoors. The Spencer Crest Nature Center is located within the Greater Corning area, less than a 10-minute drive from downtown Corning. This park offers 7 miles of trails for activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, and x-country skiing. The Spencer Crest Nature Center is one of the best outdoor activities in Corning.

Step Back in Time at the Heritage Village

Visiting the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes is one of the more unique activities in Corning. Your visit to the Heritage Village allows you to step back in time and learn about life during the 1800s in the Finger Lakes. While I did not have a chance to visit during my trip, the Heritage Village seems like a great, hands-on way to learn more about the history of the region.

Where to Eat in Corning

Corning is one of those places where the “where to eat” column is as long as the “things to do” column. While there is a lot to do in Corning, a big part of my trip was the food! There are so many amazing places to eat, drink and devour in the Historical Gaffer District. After eating and drinking my way through this small city, I can say that Corning has a great food scene.

Market Street Coffee & Tea

The first thing I searched for when I arrived in Corning was coffee. Coffee tends to be on the top of my list. I first stopped into Market Street Coffee & Tea , the air lingered with the scent of freshly roasted coffee beans. Market Street Coffee & Tea offered freshly brewed self-served coffee. This is a no-frills type of coffee shop.

Hand + Foot

Corning

We had a chance to talk with the owner, who told us a little back story on the restaurant. He told us that the name came from the card game “Hand + Foot” that his family played growing up. The game fostered a sense of community within his family which he wanted to extend to his restaurant.

I appreciated passion in the quality of food sold at Hand + Foot. They believe in sourcing the best ingredients, whether they be local or far-flung. The menu is a reflection of the high-quality ingredients. Hand + Foot has a seasonal menu that is subject to change. We started off with the pretzel, the artichoke, and tostones. The pretzel has local sharp cheddar melted over it and is the perfect comfort meal. I felt that the artichoke was almost too beautiful to eat. The tostones with their chili-garlic aioli were my favorite thing I ate at Hand + Foot.  The flavor-packed a punch!  For my main dish, I choose the poke with seared ahi tuna and watermelon radish. It was a refreshing entrée after our dense appetizers.

Corning

The Cellar is the perfect place for those looking for upscale food without an uptight atmosphere. I was surprised by how casual the atmosphere felt for a place with such a comprehensive menu. With 40 varieties of wine by the glass and over 100 by the bottle, The Cellar is a good spot to stop for tapas and drinks. However, I focused my attention on the food rather than the drinks. Everything was so good that we had no issues clearing our cheese board and the calamari appetizer. In addition to our standard cheese, we even tried some vegan cheese. I went for the Day Boat Sea Scallops for my entrée. The scallops came with cornbread and creamed corn which was a unique, home-style take on scallops. This is one of the best restaurants in Corning.

Corning NY Hotels

If you’re spending the night in Corning (which I totally recommend), check out these hotels!

The Hilton Garden Inn Corning Downtown is the top-rated hotel in Corning, and for good reason. This hotel is in a prime location, within a short walk from the Corning Museum of Glass.

Radisson Hotel Corning

The Radisson Hotel Corning is located at the edge of the Gaffer District, making it walkable to all the shops and restaurants in Corning. This is an ideal hotel, location-wise if you want to be easily able to walk for meals.

Things to do in Corning NY Wrap Up

Corning is certainly a worthwhile place to travel to in New York. While there are various things to do in Corning if you can only do one thing on your visit, be sure to go to the Corning Museum of Glass. Doing the glassblowing was by far one of my favorite activities in Corning!

Depending on where you are visiting Corning from, you can plan a day trip or weekend getaway. Yet, I would recommend planning a longer trip in the Finger Lakes to explore nearby gems such as Watkins Glen State Park and visiting the Finger Lakes wine region.

Come Join My Journey was hosted by Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes , however, my opinions are as always my own.

Best Things to do in Corning, New York Travel Guide

Clock Tower in Downtown Corning NY

Looking for the best things to do in Corning, New York? We’ve got you covered with all the best activities in one of our favorite Finger Lakes towns to explore!

Easily one of the best and most charming towns in the region, there are tons of great things to do in Corning, New York. The Finger Lakes region is full of some of the most amazing New York towns , scenery, and wineries to visit and this is one of them and a great base to exploring the region for a few days.

After at least a dozen visits ourselves, we can confidently say these are some of the best things to do in Corning from where to eat, drink, where to explore, and best Corning attractions to check out.

Helpful information for Visiting Corning

Before diving into the best things to do in Corning, there are a few tips that will help you plan your visit!

Keep in mind that small towns, like Corning, NY, don’t have regular business hours you may be used to in larger destinations. For restaurants and activities at smaller businesses be sure to call ahead to see what their current hours of operation are as some places are not open 7 days a week.

What to do in Corning Getaway Guide

Rockwell museum.

The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian with loaner pieces from the Smithsonian inside the museum.

The museum is carefully curated and the collection is astounding. There are also some fun activities including scavenger hunts for kids and adults to make things a bit more fun for everyone during their visit!

Corning Museum of Glass

Floating glass sculpture installation at Corning Museum of Glass

With over 45,000 pieces of glass with some dating back to over 3,500 years ago, galleries of glass sculptures, interactive exhibits like trippy optical illusion mirrors, glass blowing demos, and even glass blowing experiences where you get to try it yourself and make an ornament or glass flower to ship home!

There are tons of things to do here it’s no wonder why the average visitor spends about 5 hours visiting the museum including hands on glass blowing workshops (be sure to schedule in advance).

Fun Fact: Most people have had or used Corning Ware ceramics in their kitchens at home!

Also, if you’re a fan of the Netflix series Blown Away,  they film the series finale here at the Corning Museum of Glass and you can find some of their work from the series on display throughout the museum.

Stroll Downtown and Market Street

Market Street in Corning NY

It’s absolutely beautiful, especially in the summer with all the trees lining the streets in full foliage. Market Street is full of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

There’s a really rad Feminist book store called Card Carrying Books & Gifts that you should absolutely stop at, besides carrying a collection of female-authored books, they also carry some unique gifts.

If you’re into collecting vinyl like we are, check out CD Cafe which carries a curated collection of CDs, records, and other audio equipment. It’s actually quite exciting to see old-school record shops thrive outside of NYC and while we are exploring upstate!

If you also like shopping for antiques and treasures, check out Twin Tiers Antiques Plaza . The Finger Lakes region is actually one of my favorite areas to explore antique shops and we have come back (after several trips) with quite a few fun and unique finds!

If you are kicking yourself for not grabbing that bottle of wine from a winery that you visited or want to try more of the great wine or bottle of liquor from the region, stop into Bottles & Corks which carries an impressive selection of all kinds of spirits, wines, and drinks of the region!

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio is another one of the best things to do in Corning on Market Street, the heart of the Gaffer District. Watch the live glass blowing happening by artists in the back of the studio or browse the shop for a unique gift to bring home.

Enjoy the Food Scene

Bar Hand and Foot Corning NY

inside Hand + Foot

We are huge fans of the dining scene right here in Corning! There are quite a few great restaurants to check out and it feels like on our mulitple visits we’ve ate at every single place possible, so we can confidently say which ones are our favorites and where we return to on each visit.

We had one of the best meals we’ve ever had at Hand & Foot along with their amazing cocktails and beers on tap. They are always switching up the menu but there are usually always a few staples. My personal favorite is their take on Korean rice cakes.

If you’re looking for a delicious and quick breakfast, pop on over to  Poppleton’s Bakery .  Don’t forget to get a side of their cheesy breakfast potatoes either! They have a selection of baked goods and breakfast bites like sandwiches.

Another morning spot if you’re looking for a nice cup of coffee is Soul Full Cup Coffeehouse is our favorite place to get a cup of joe. They also have a few light pastries too.

Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill has legendary Mac n’ Cheese if you’re looking for a hearty meal!

Market Street Brewing Co. is a great stop if you want some craft brews paired with some gastropub bites, we personally liked the tacos here.

Last but not least, our new favorite place to eat (and thing to do in Corning) is dine at The Quincy Exchange . We’ve had dinner here twice and each time they knocked it out of the park. We have even been told that this is THE SPOT for brunch in the Finger Lakes too.

Their American Bistro has great steaks and specials (their burger was divine as well) and every side we’ve tried from here has been insanely delicious. Their menu does change seasonally, so each visit will be unique and different.

If you plan ahead, you can also reserve a spot at the special chef’s course dinner experience where you get personalized pairings and a course meal right from the chef.

Another great dinner spot is The Cellar . They offer a menu of global fusion fare along with cocktails and a wine list.

If you need a walk after dining, take a walk over the Brisco Bridge connecting the Corning Museum of Glass to the rest of Corning over the Chemung River!

Another one of the best things to do in Corning is check out the breweries! For being a smallish town they really have no shortage of places to grab a drink or a freshly brewed beer!

We already mentioned Market Street Brewing Co. , because they also have a full service restaurant and makes for a great lunch or dinner spot between your tastings!

Liquid Shoes Brewing is also located on Market Street has a great selection of small-batch brews. We’ve found their hazy IPAs to be pretty darn good.

Iron Flamingo Brewery is another great spot to grab a beer and some light bites. They have an impressive amount of taps to try and have some snacks incase you get a bit peckish while drinking.

Wine Tasting

Group wine tasting at Vineyard View Winery

You can start the Keuka Lake Wine Trail in Hammondsport which is a 30-minute drive from Corning. This Y-shaped lake has tons of wineries dotted around it and other cool small towns you can stop along the way including Hammondsport and Penn Yan .

Another 30-minute drive from Corning is Watkins Glen which is also a great place to start the Seneca Wine Trail.

This is the most famous of the wine trails in the region as Seneca Lake is the deepest of the Finger Lakes and has its own microclimate that has the most ideal grape growing conditions in the region. As a matter of fact, many of the wineries in the region (even if they aren’t located on Seneca Lake) have plots of land where their grapes grow around here.

There are so many wineries to check out so be sure to plan a full day at least of wine tasting!

Top Things to Do in Corning, NY in the Finger Lakes

' src=

The Finger Lakes region is great place to visit and a lovely drive from New York City.

There is much to enjoy in the area, from adventure sports to the Finger Lakes wine country and wine tasting, wonderful museums, great wineries and delicious restaurants. This destination, in particular, is great for at least two days. You want to visit Corning, NY!

Please note: We thank the Finger Lakes tourism boards for generously hosting us. We also may make a small commission from affiliate links in this post, but all opinions are ours. What to See and Do in Corning NY

Kayaking or paddle boarding .

First things first…I happen to love early mornings on a lake.

It's pretty awesome to enjoy the water's stillness and the feeling of the crisp air. And besides, isn't a morning workout kayaking or paddle boarding on a gorgeous lake way better than a confined gym at your hotel?

Kayaking on Keuka Lake was certainly the most glorious way to start my morning. It put me in the best mood! And since it's a lake, it's calm – there's no need to be scared of huge waves or anything! I recommend doing this for about an hour so you can head over to the next stop!

Note that it's about a 20-30 minute drive from Corning, but it's completely worth it for a little morning zen to start your day!

Visit the Corning Museum of Glass

This is such a kick-ass museum. Dan and I LOVED it. We could have spent so much more time there than we did (but there are so many things to do in Corning, NY we moved on after about four hours!).

The glass art sculptures are jaw-dropping. This museum is dedicated to the art, science, and history of glass. You’ll watch glass-blowing demonstrations with awe – later on, you can easily participate and make your own glass if you sign up for a class at their neighboring building!

You can spend more or less time here if you want, but we promise it'll capture your attention more than you expected. You'll also gain a broader understanding of how the glass industry plays a role in our daily lives, like in tech equipment, science equipment, and homewares beyond your table setting.

The great news is their tickets are good for two consecutive days. If you're craving more time there but need to skedaddle, come back tomorrow!

For an extensive recap of my time at Corning Museum of Glass, including ticket information, check out this informative post . (Including how to buy Corning Glass pieces on Etsy !)

Spend Time at The Rockwell Museum

Next up on your already fabulous day filled with things to do in Corning, NY, is art appreciation and digestion! After filling your stomach with delicious food, take a walk down the road to the Rockwell Art Museum. It's the perfect place for a low-key stroll through beautiful paintings and sculptures.

Contrary to your immediate thought, it's a museum focusing on art about the American experience. The building is Corning's old city hall, and the art collection was Bob and Hertha Rockwell's. It's three floors of about 500 pieces and, as a Smithsonian affiliate, has its seal of approval in terms of its quality and art programming.

I absolutely  love native cultures so I was elated to see so many pieces on display whose subject was Native Americans. They own about 13,000 pieces, but due to their intimate space can only display so many at a time.

This is great because they always rotate the art to keep it fresh! They also have a program partnering with Corning Museum of Glass to bring guest artists to the area.

They're open from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily, except for a few major holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. If you're visiting both museums, be aware you can save a few dollars and buy a combo ticket for both.

A free shuttle transports visitors between the two museums and runs every 15 minutes.

Explore the Town of Corning, New York

Corning is such a cute, walkable town, and you'll want to explore W Market Street, part of the historic Corning's Gaffer District of Corning, NY.

There are vintage shops, clothing stores, antique shops, and retail spaces.

It's also a great time to take some photos – it's truly a picturesque American city. Be sure to stop at the fifty-foot-high Clock Tower in Centerway Square. It's a memorial to Erastus Corning, whom the town is named after. The Clock Tower used to be a watering station for horses too, and was constructed from local stone.

Another SUPER cool thing to do in Corning, NY is to participate in a self-guided walking tour, which starts at The Clock Tower. You can start there from the beginning or input your location from a list of 19 landmarks in the Gaffer District.

Restaurants in Corning NY

Have lunch at hand + foot.

Hand + Foot is hands down one of the best restaurants to grab lunch in Corning's town on W Market Street.

They have something for any diet, any palette. You can't go wrong with anything you order, but I enjoyed the tostones, artichokes, and pretzel bread with my group to start.

The tuna poke was my main dish, which I highly recommend, but some sandwiches friends ordered looked amazing too! It's got a bit of a cool hipster vibe inside that I really liked.

The owners are seasoned restaurant owners who moved back closer to their hometowns after learning about restaurant management, including running a successful kitchen in Manhattan.

Happy Hour Beer at Market Street Brewing

You're on vacation! And what does that call for? Happy hour!

Head over to Market Street Brewing . It's a great spot to enjoy some delicious beer.

The staff is welcoming, the tunes are awesome, and the vibe is cozy! I recommend a beer flight – it's the best way to try a bit of several great options. (Note they're open Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday.)

While you're enjoying your beer, admire the building you're sitting in. The owners received a prestigious award in New York, called the PAN Award, given to those who restore historic and preserve structures in historic districts, such as Corning, NY.

(Love beer? Check out our self-guided brewery tour guides in San Diego and Winston-Salem, NC .)

Have Dinner at The Cellar

One of Corning's many great restaurants is The Cellar. So many menu items caught my attention that it was hard to choose just one…so I didn't!

My friend and I split two dishes. But that was only after everyone at the table shared a beautiful cheese plate, and we all indulged in roasted Brussels sprouts. (Yum and yum.)

They also have an extensive list of wines, martinis, and assorted cocktails. So many, in fact, they need an iPad to show guests all the options!

Dippity Do Dahs for Ice Cream Dessert

If you saved room for dessert and you're more of an ice cream person than a cake one, walk down the street for a treat. Dessert at Dippity Do Dahs ice cream parlor will do the trick.

They have sundaes, waffle cones, shakes, and ice cream sandwiches. Indulge a little more for your day in Corning, NY; I did.

Of all the places in the United States to flock to for wine, would you guess that the Finger Lakes of New York state is one of the top regions for growing wine? We didn't know this little fact until we started to travel there and see how huge wine tourism is in the area!

If you're in Corning, NY, you must venture to nearby cities, including Hammondsport and Watkins Glen, and hit the wine trails to taste some delicious wine.

Pick your lake to hop around – the Keuka Lake Wine Trail , Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, or Seneca Lake Wine Trail – and taste the area's reds, whites, and rosés. (Drink responsibly!)

Two glasses of red wine with a wine bottle next to it and a vase of yellow and green daffodils.

Where is Corning, New York?

If you're going to participate in the top things to do and see in Corning, with places to stay too, let's discuss where Corning, NY is!

It's not exactly a “small town,” though if you're used to big urban areas like Boston or NYC, you may consider it so.

It's part of the “Finger Lakes” region of upstate New York. It's in western New York, just north of the Pennsylvania border. Here are a few driving times for reference:

  • Scranton, PA to Corning, New York: 2.5 hours, approx. 115 miles
  • Buffalo, NY to Corning: 2.5 hours, approx. 160 miles
  • Manhattan, NY to Corning: 4-5 hours (very dependent on traffic), approx. 255 miles

For an especially handy look at the area and things to do, which we go into detail about below, check out this Google map we created.

Where to Stay in Corning, New York, in the Finger Lakes

Staying at a hotel in downtown Corning was ideal; there was no shortage of things to do and see. It's close to the Corning Museum of Glass, the Rockwell Museum, restaurants, and more.

Staying in downtown Corning , NY will put you in the heart of all the fun activities we’ve mentioned.

Here are a few different places with wonderful reviews:

  • Hilton Garden Inn Corning Downtown
  • Staybridge Suites
  • Rosewood Inn (If you're looking for something a little more local with a Bed and Breakfast vibe. It's the furthest one we listed from the Corning Museum of Glass, but it's still very close by, just across the water)

Visiting Nearby Areas

If you want to venture a little bit further out but still enjoy staying in the Finger Lakes, check out the Park Inn in Hammondsport or Harbor H otel in Watkins Glen.

Watkins Glen is also another lovely area of the Finger Lakes, with a romantic waterfront hotel right beside sunset sailboat excursions.

I know you published this post a while ago, but I found it while googling “what to do in Corning” because we’ll be there for a day on our way up to Ithaca. Thank you for all your tips!

So glad to hear it was helpful, Betsy! We were in Corning this year so we are updating the post with new content – which means it’ll get an updated published date too! We like to keep our information accurate! 😉 Thanks for your comment!

Corning looks like the place we want to go in October! Are there any wineries around? Thanks

Such a great question, Patricia! Check out our post on Things to Do in Hammondsport, which is a town over on Keuka Lake. There are tons of wineries there and we loved visiting Point of the Bluff Vineyards! Also, Dr. Frank’s is a wonderful winery/vineyard in Corning. Here are the two posts where we discuss both areas: * https://sometimeshome.com/things-to-do-hammondsport-ny/ * https://sometimeshome.com/finger-lakes-ny-distillery-wine/

Hope that helps! Let us know how your visit goes. 🙂 – Mikkel + Dan

6 Incredible Things to Do in Corning

  • October 5, 2022

Sparkle is the name of the game for this crystal city in the southern Finger Lakes region. When it comes to all the unique things to do in Corning, you’ll be surprised by all that’s possible in a short amount of time.

The Finger Lakes region is a truly underrated gem on the East Coast. California may have Napa and Sonoma Valley, but we have our own world-class wineries right here in Upstate New York. Its name comes from the eleven long, thin glacial lakes that, well, look like fingers. Because of the climate, it’s become a fantastic place for Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines to flourish, and today there are well over a hundred wineries sprinkled all around.

Corning specifically is located in the southern Finger Lakes and is fairly young for an East Coast city — only officially being incorporated in 1890. It has a history of welcoming artists of all sorts, from the famous glassmakers of the American Brilliant Period to the small business owners that set up shop here today.

Trust me when I say you’re going to fall in love with Corning.

6 Incredible Things to Do in Corning, NY

places to visit corning ny

1. Explore all things glass

Glass is practically synonymous with Corning. There’s a reason its nickname is Crystal City, after all! Glassmaking here goes back to the post-Civil War era when manufacturing replaced the lumber industry and glass factories began to open. At its height, there were something like 20 factories in this region, each innovating new glassmaking techniques and creating the kind of products we take for granted today. Think signal lenses for trains, the very first bulbs (made for Thomas Edison, of course), Pyrex® cookware, fiber optics, and so much more. That’s not even to mention stunning decorative designs like the cut glass that won T.G. Hawkes & Co grand prize at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle.

As I said, you’ve really got to visit at least one of the following spots while in Corning and enjoy this town’s sparkling history.

places to visit corning ny

The Corning Museum of Glass

Established in 1951 to showcase the town’s ties to the glass industry, The Corning Museum of Glass is perhaps one of the most unique museums in the country. It was gifted by Corning Inc. (then known as Corning Glass Works) to celebrate its 100th anniversary and today displays over 50,000 objects to tell glass’s 3,500-year-old history.

Be sure to give yourself more time than you think you’ll need – it’s the number one thing most visitors bemoan when they finish their visit! Not only can you walk through a number of exquisite exhibits, but there are also workshops and demonstrations held daily every hour. Yes, this includes trying some glassblowing yourself!

Try Glass Blowing at Hands-on-Glass

For those that want even more experience with glassmaking, head over to  Hands-on-Glass ,  a public access studio that’s been open for over 30 years. It was founded by Rodi Rovner to allow anyone from any background to learn how to work with glass. When I visited, I made my own paperweight – a fascinating process that takes choreography, artistry, and the most delicate touch.

Check their website for current activities as they offer something a bit different with the changing seasons.

The Erlacher Steuben Glass Shop

While shopping the many small businesses on Corning’s world-renowned Market Street, be sure to stop into the The Erlacher Steuben Glass Shop . Steuben Glass is a glassmaking company that goes back to 1903 and takes its name from surrounding Steuben county. The Steuben style is known for producing highly refractive glass that offers beautiful cascading rainbows when under the light. This stunning glass has been seen all over the world in the last century. In fact, ever since President and Mrs. Truman gifted Queen Elizabeth II Steuben glass products for her wedding, they’ve been the go-to gift for every president since.

The Erlacher Collection is focused on finding all sorts of rare Steuben items. It also represents the love story between Kitty and the late Max Erlacher. Max came over from Austria in the 1950s to work as a master glass engraver, and after he met and fell in love with Kitty, they decided to open their own business. I had the chance to meet with Max back when I visited Corning, and it was such a pleasure watching him work with his 100-year-old engraver and see the couples’ shared passion for glass.

2. Grab lunch at Old World Cafe

Staying along historic Market Street, you’ve got to grab lunch at  Old World Café . Jennifer and Chris Herman opened the cafe when they moved here around twenty years ago on Jennifer’s mother’s recommendation.

Their cafe focuses on simpler times with hearty sandwiches, paninis, salads, soups, and, most importantly, ice cream. Their ice cream is made locally by the Hershey Ice Cream company, and the cafe features Victorian-style ice cream and candy counter. Don’t skip a refreshing ice cream soda while you’re here.

The Rockwell Museum

3. Visit The Rockwell Museum

Another fantastic museum you’ll want to check out while in Corning is  The Rockwell Museum , a Smithsonian affiliate. the name comes from Bob and Hertha Rockwell, local business owners who gifted their collection to the community. Located in Corning’s Old City Hall, a beautiful piece of architecture from 1893, The Rockwell focuses on exhibits that define the American experience with themes as broad as nature to as intimate as personal identity.

Bonus: you can get a combination ticket that allows you to visit both The Rockwell and The Corning Museum of Glass, and there’s even a free shuttle that runs every 15 minutes between them.

4. Learn more about the history of Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes

For those curious about local history, pay a visit to the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes .  Run by the Corning-Painted Post Historical Society, the village encompasses a few significantly historical buildings in town that allows visitors to take a little step back into time. The main building is Benjamin Patterson Inn, also known as the Painted Post Tavern. Built in 1796, the rooms are designed to show what life would’ve been like for the Patterson family.

Other buildings include Browntown Schoolhouse, Cooley Blacksmith Shop, Wixon Log Cabin, Starr Barn, Joner’s Shop, Wood Shed, the Gardens, and, of course, the Painted Post Depot and Museum. You can visit on your own or book a tour in advance.

5. Shop around Gaffer District

A few of the places I already listed above are part of Corning’s Gaffer District. The district began following the devastation of the Flood of 1972 when the Market Street Restoration Agency was formed to restore downtown, Corning. The name, of course, is tied to Corning’s crystal heritage as “gaffer” is a name for a master glassblower.

Fast forward almost fifty years, and the district is home to over 250 businesses, with Market Street right at its center. Stroll along or follow one of their walking trails to enjoy this lively area. Also, check their website for upcoming activities as this is where all major events and festivals will happen in Corning.

6. Drive out to nearby villages in Southern Finger Lakes

One of the best things to do in Corning is to venture out! While the town is full of charm, it’s also only miles from equally charming villages. I had a chance to drive around a bit while on my trip and saw even more of why the southern Finger Lakes are worth visiting.

places to visit corning ny

Only a 20-minute drive from Corning,  Bath   has been around since 1793 and was named after the famous Jane Austen town in England. This quaint town is full of historic architecture and a very cute town square which is home to all sorts of annual traditions and events, including the world’s longest continuously-running county fair.

While there, be sure to check out Bath Grove Cemetery as well as Bath Presbyterian Church . The church is home to one of just eight Tiffany sanctuaries in the US.  Back in 1895, the then president of the church hired Tiffany Glass Company to replace all glass with their own designs, a process that took around two years.

Before you go, stop into Betty Kay Bake Shop for one of their English cuts, a hole-less frosted donut that can only be found here.

wine - things to do in corning

Hammondsport

Around 35 minutes from Corning, Hammondsport has been called America’s coolest small town for good reason. Located at the southern end of Keuka Lake, this town is at the heart of Finger Lakes’ wine development and is home to one of the most notable figures in aviation history.

When it comes to winemaking, you can trace Hammondsport’s involvement all the way back to 1829, when Reverend Botswick planted grapes here. However, what really put the Finger Lakes on the map was the arrival of Dr. Konstantin Frank from Ukraine. When he managed to grow the more delicate vinifera grapes featured in many European-style wines, he showed that the region could compete with some of the oldest wine regions in the world. Grab a glass at the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery ,  still run by Frank’s family today.

At the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum , learn more about the man who first made aviation seem more than a mere spectacle but an actual, useful mode of transportation. While the Wright Brothers are credited with inventing flying, Curtiss showed how it could be put to use. He’s largely seen as the Founder of the American Aircraft Industry, and the museum allows you to see his contributions for yourself.

And there you have it – all the incredible things to do in Corning! With such a unique history and a community full of passionate small business owners, you’re sure to have an undeniably charming trip.

  • 6 Of The Most Charming Small Towns To Visit In The Finger Lakes

One of the most popular travel destinations in northeastern USA , the lovely Finger Lakes region is also home to some of the most attractive small towns in New York State . Consisting of 11 narrow yet long strips of water just south of Lake Ontario , this unique landscape was shaped by vast glaciers that carved out the rock here. Then, as they retreated, they left behind the spectacular “valleys of water” we know today as the Finger Lakes. The best of the communities that have sprung up here now serve as excellent bases from which to venture out and explore the region. From Watkins Glen with its picturesque state park to Corning, the country’s glassmaking capital, these six charming small towns in the Finger Lakes are just waiting to be explored.

The skyline of Geneva, New York

Our first stop is Geneva , a picturesque community located on the northern shores of Seneca Lake , roughly halfway between Rochester and Syracuse . A highlight of a visit is exploring Geneva’s South Main Street Historic District, a beautiful area of 140 historically significant buildings. Historic highlights include Pultney Park and the original quadrangle of the Hobart College campus, as well as the elegant Rose Hill Mansion. Built in 1839 in Greek Revival fashion, this former working estate is open for guided tours that provide a glimpse into 19th-century life.

Interested in the performing arts? The historic Smith Opera House has been around since 1894 and continues to serve as a cultural hub for music, dance, and theater performances. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Kashong Conservation Area with its 84 acres of protected land, perfect for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Geneva also draws anglers. Dubbed the “Lake Trout Capital of the World,” it has been home to the National Lake Trout Derby since 1964.

Lynnie Lou’s Ice Cream and Custard store in Naples, New York

With a name like Naples, you know this picturesque town will be nice. Surrounded by lush landscapes and situated near lakes Honeoye and Canandaigua , Naples is famous among outdoor lovers for its proximity to numerous natural wonders. One of the best is the Conklin Gully 12 Falls Trail, a popular yet challenging 2.6-mile hike that follows a riverbed and features a series of beautiful waterfalls. Grimes Glen Park is another great spot for fans of scenic hikes and waterfalls.

Naples also boasts a vibrant arts scene, with the Bristol Valley Theater being a perfect place to visit for a culture fix. A great time to visit is in September during the annual Naples Grape Festival, an event that’s been drawing crowds since 1961 to sample local vintages, foods, and artisan products.

Watkins Glen

Lake Seneca in Watkins Glen, New York

Watkins Glen ’s location at the southern tip of Seneca Lake makes it an equally ideal destination for a day trip or a fun weekend getaway. The star of the show here is Watkins Glen State Park , a spectacular area of outstanding natural beauty set along a gorge carved by Ice Age glaciers. The park features 19 waterfalls along its trails, with the gorge path allowing you to walk under, over, and along the falls; it’s an especially lovely experience when the fall colors have arrived.

Other fun things to do in this part of the world include catching a NASCAR race at the Watkins Glen International track or participating in the Finger Lakes Food and Wine Festival, held at the racetrack each July. Visitors can continue their wine experience along the Seneca Wine Trail with scenic views and tastings at some of the area's most celebrated vineyards.

Hammondsport

Aerial view of Hammondsport, New York

Located at the southern end of Keuka Lake , Hammondsport is popular for its charming village-like ambiance. Established in the 1790s, it quickly earned a reputation for its stunning lakeside setting as well as for its winemaking tradition, with the village serving as a gateway to the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. Popular local wineries to visit here include Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, Heron Hill Winery, and Bully Hill Vineyards, each of which offers sampling and tours.

Another reason to include Hammondsport on a Finger Lakes travel itinerary is the fact it’s home to the excellent Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. Celebrating the life and innovations of the pioneering aviator and inventor after whom it’s named, the museum showcases early aircraft, motorcycles, and exhibits on the development of naval aviation. Be sure to allow time to explore the village itself with its picturesque village square, boutique shops, and classy eateries.

Wildflowers in bloom at Corning, New York

Its location at the crossroads of the I-99 and I-86 highways near the Pennsylvania border makes Corning an excellent (and accessible) getaway destination. Known worldwide for its glassmaking heritage, the centerpiece of this attractive town’s allure is the Corning Museum of Glass, a fascinating attraction dedicated to the art, history, and science of glass. In addition to its glassmaking demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and a vast collection of more than 45,000 glass objects spanning 35 centuries, the museum also offers guests the unique hands-on experience of creating their own glass artwork.

Another key attraction is the Gaffer District, Corning's downtown area. Named after the old English term for a professional glassblower, the district is a picturesque, walkable area brimming with boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and historic architecture. The Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes is another must-visit. It offers a glimpse into the 19th century with its collection of preserved buildings, including a 1796 log cabin, the Benjamin Patterson Inn, and a one-room schoolhouse.

The college town of Aurora, New York, in fall

Our last stop is Aurora , a quaint village on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake that’s recognized for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and its tranquil, picturesque surroundings. At the heart of Aurora's appeal is the historic Wells College campus, founded in 1868 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its beautiful grounds and buildings. The nearby Aurora Arts and Design Center showcases the work of local artists and artisans, offering a glimpse into the vibrant creative community that thrives here, while the MacKenzie-Childs headquarters is known for its whimsical and colorful ceramics and home furnishings (tours and shopping available).

For those looking to explore the great outdoors, Aurora's location on Cayuga Lake provides ample opportunities for water-based activities, including kayaking, boating, and fishing. The village's lakefront is also ideal for a stroll and boasts lovely views of the water and surrounding countryside. Fancy making a weekend out of your visit? The luxurious Inns of Aurora, a collection of historic homes transformed into a premier lodging experience, is an ideal choice for a memorable Finger Lakes retreat.

The Final Word

Its enchanting blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture makes the Finger Lakes of New York State a must-visit for any traveler visiting the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. From the awe-inspiring gorges of Watkins Glen to the charming lakeside setting of Aurora, as well as the historical significance of Corning and Geneva, with stops at some wineries in Hammondsport and Naples along the way, these six most charming small towns to visit in the Finger Lakes provide a fascinating look into one of the country’s most scenic regions.

Your ultimate guide to viewing the 2024 partial solar eclipse in Corning, New York

If you will be in the corning area on april 8, 2024, here's what you need to know about viewing the solar eclipse..

On Monday, New Yorkers will have the chance to view a potentially once-in-a-lifetime event: a total  solar eclipse .

The moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun April 8, creating a total solar eclipse which will block the face of the sun and darken the sky.

While Corning is not in the direct path of totality, a deep partial eclipse with about 98% maximum coverage will still be visible, weather conditions permitting.

Here's everything you need to know as the region prepares for this rare spectacle.

What time does April 8 solar eclipse peak in the Corning area? When, how to watch

The path of totality will enter in the southwestern part of New York just after 3:15 p.m. April 8 and will depart northern New York just before 3:30 p.m.

Most towns in the Corning area will begin to glimpse the peak of the eclipse starting around 3:22 p.m. The eclipse  will start at 2:07:10 p.m. in Corning , peak at 3:22:10 p.m. and end at 4:33:50 p.m.

Find specific viewing times across the Southern Tier and the rest of New York here or search by zip code .

Will the Corning area have clear skies for the April 8 eclipse?

Predicting cloud cover more than a few days in advance is no clear science, and the Southern Tier region's climate history suggests there will be clouds on April 8.

As of Sunday, the latest National Weather Service forecast for Monday's eclipse calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 60 degrees in Corning. Chances of clear skies in Corning  stand at 51.9% based on historical trends, according to NOAA.

Coming off an early April storm that brought heavy rain and wind to the region, an AccuWeather forecast suggests the clear zone that develops in its wake could be in "just the right spot" for good viewing conditions for the eclipse.

Where to watch April 8 solar eclipse in Corning area

The best places to witness the eclipse in the Southern Tier include open parks or waterfront areas with unobstructed views of the sky.

Corning Museum of Glass will host an outdoor viewing space for guests between 2-4 p.m. Monday. There will also be some space-themed activities for families to enjoy, like a scavenger hunt, puzzles, coloring and more.

More: How to watch April 8 solar eclipse in the Corning area. Viewing parties planned.

Don't plan to do your Wegmans shopping during the eclipse

Wegmans plans to briefly close dozens of stores from 3-3:30 p.m. Monday to allow employees to witness the eclipse.

The Hornell store will be closed during that time, along with Wegmans locations in Elmira, Corning and the Rochester area.

When were past solar eclipses in Corning area?

The solar eclipse on April 8 is a rare sight, but Corning residents have seen eclipse events throughout history.

On Jan. 24, 1925, Corning and surrounding communities were in the path of totality. A Corning photographer captured a memorable image of that total eclipse in Steuben County. One area resident, now 101-years-old, recalled her family using smoked glass to view the eclipse in the days before special eclipse glasses.

More recently, a partial eclipse was visible in 2017 with local coverage around 70%. Monday's event will be much more pronounced with about 98% coverage in Corning.

More: 1925 eclipse is Lawrenceville woman's earliest memory. She's ready to witness history again

How to protect your eyes during eclipse

Not all eclipse glasses are created equal, and just a few seconds of looking directly into the sun could cause permanent damage. Doctors recommend using a pair of certified eclipse glasses and testing them out before you view the eclipse.

If you don't have eclipse glasses, find out how to build a pinhole projector here .

The solar eclipse forecast for Upstate NY is getting gloomier

Cloud cover in Upstate New York during the solar eclipse

This map shows the percentage of the sky expected to be covered in clouds at 3 p.m. Monday, during the total solar eclipse. A storm system edging in from the southwest will push clouds in during the day. National Weather Service

Update: Here is the latest forecast for Upstate NY as of about 11:45 a.m. Monday .

Syracuse, N.Y. -- In much of Upstate New York, the sun may be obscured by more than just the moon during the total solar eclipse on Monday.

National Weather Service forecasts are painting an increasingly gloomy picture of clouds Monday afternoon while cautioning that we might not know until Monday morning exactly where and how thick the clouds might be.

The main message so far is that clouds will be heaviest in the west and scarcest in the east of Upstate New York. The Adirondacks appear to be the best bet, but forecasters have backed off from their prediction on Saturday of “near-ideal” conditions in the Adirondacks on Monday afternoon.

“Cloud forecast during the Monday afternoon eclipse continues to remain uncertain at this point and may not even be fully known until just a few hours before the event starts,” cautioned the weather service office in Buffalo. “Exact placement of clouds may not be known until Monday morning.”

Predicting exactly what the sky will look like even more than a few hours in advance is perilous, particularly when, as now, a big storm system is on its way toward Upstate New York. It’s tricky to determine when that storm will reach Upstate New York, and to estimate when the vanguard cirrus clouds will move in ahead of the storm.

We might still be able to see the eclipse through a veil of high, thin cirrus clouds, but if the puffy, denser cumulus arrive early, that will block the view.

Upstate New York isn’t alone: Clouds are likely across much of the eclipse path, which in the U.S. runs from southwestern Texas to northern Maine.

All is not lost, however: Some of the clouds might be thin, cirrus clouds, which won’t completely block the eclipse. And even in areas with heavy cloud cover, there could be breaks of sunshine, hopefully at the right times.

Here’s what the three main weather services offices in Upstate New York are saying just over 30 hours before the eclipse starts about 2:08 p.m. Monday. Totality, when the moon completely blocks the sun, arrives about 3:23 p.m. We’ll break it down by region:

Western New York and counties along Lake Ontario : “Confidence remains HIGH that a wealth of cirrus will be over the entire region, though possibly still thin east of Lake Ontario,” the Buffalo weather service office said. “The uncertainty for sky conditions will be the mid level clouds, as to how much alto-cumulus will be in place. By mid afternoon these alto-cumulus clouds will likely be from the Genesee Valley and points westward, with less obscuring alto-cumulus towards the east.”

Clouds are likely to block 75% to 90% of the sky in Western New York, and 60% along the eastern Lake Ontario shore, including Oswego and Watertown.

Finger Lakes, Central New York, Southern Tier : “Across the Finger Lakes Region and points further west, the latest model guidance has a greater potential for those midlevel clouds to start pushing in during the mid to late afternoon hours,” the Binghamton weather service office said. “The timing of this midlevel layer of clouds will be critical for eclipse viewers, as chances for sky obscuration will be greater.”

Air should be drier and thus less cloudy in Central New York to the east of I-81, the weather service said, although not all of that area is in the path of totality.

Clouds are expected to cover 50% to 70% of skies during the eclipse in the middle of the state.

Adirondacks. This is still the best bet in New York to see the unobscured eclipse, although here, too, signs are showing more cirrus clouds than anticipated in previous forecasts. Saturday’s forecasts called for about 15% of skies in the Adirondacks would be covered in clouds; now, that’s risen to about 30%, which is still the best in New York.

The farther northeast you go in the Northeast, the better. The high pressure system that is bringing sunshine to Upstate New York today -- a day too early, as it turns out -- will still be in place over northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Nearly all of Maine has virtually zero chances of clouds during the eclipse.

National forecast for solar eclipse weather

Much of the U.S. will have a hard time seeing the total solar eclipse Monday afternoon because of clouds. The best spots to see the path of totality look to be northern New England and southern Indiana. Accuweather

What is New York weather like for 2024 solar eclipse? See today's cloud cover map

By Giorgio Panetta

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 1:14 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  All eyes will be on the sky today for the 2024 total solar eclipse, but will the weather cooperate ?

History is knocking on our door as the phenomenon known as the solar eclipse rapidly approaches. It's all the buzz -- from fake glasses to when & where the best views will be , as well as the cautions, concerns and the intangibles. CBS New York's Lonnie Quinn will be travelling up to Lake Placid, New York to report on a potentially premium experience.

  • Solar eclipse 2024 live updates and scenes from the path of totality

"I have covered numerous partial eclipses, but I have never experienced totality. This will be a bucket list item fort me. The real difference is...with a partial eclipse you must always keep the glasses on. Once totality takes over, I will be able to remove my glasses and simply experience something unique and unparalleled here on earth," he said.

  • What time does solar eclipse start, peak and end in New York?

NYC eclipse forecast

solar-eclipse-2024-forecast.png

New York City is outside the path of totality -- just 10 percent shy -- but it should still turn out to be a substantial experience. Luckily, the weather forecast is on our side. High pressure is forecast to bring us a dry day with temperatures in the 60s. A few high clouds may drift by, but we are rain-free. We can expect mostly sunny skies, with a high around 64.

Join these solar eclipse events in NYC & across New York state

NYC eclipse viewing timeline: New York City will be able to see darkening skies around 2:50 p.m., with skies lightening up again around 4 p.m. Peak coverage will be at 90 percent at 3:25 p.m.

Upstate N.Y. eclipse forecast

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

The Upstate forecast is a little iffy regarding clouds vs. sun. During springtime, the state gets a wide variety of weather, and we just got through a very powerful Nor'easter that dumped snow in parts of the Adirondacks. Grey skies and unseasonably cool temperatures are the norm, but, thankfully, there are no major systems Monday.

Best places to see today's solar eclipse in NYC, New York state

However, the shield of high pressure that keeps New York City mostly sunny is less effective closer to the Great Lakes. Places like Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Rochester have a slightly higher chance of clouds marring the view at 40 to 50 percent. The good news is they are mainly high and thin clouds. Hopefully, luck is on our side, and any lake effect clouds are broken up by a south wind. Fingers crossed.

Rochester looks mostly to partly sunny with a high around 58, and Niagara Falls should be partly sunny with a high of 56.

Upstate viewing timeline: Skies will darken in Rochester around 2:05 p.m. before lightening around 4:33 p.m. The city will experience 3.38 seconds of totality at 3:20:48 p.m.

How will the eclipse impact animals, driving and vision?

The moon will pass between the Sun & Earth for a few fleeting moments, blocking or partially blocking the sunlight for up to 4 and a half minutes. Experts and enthusiasts alike claim the celestial event will transform day into night, revealing the stars.

Birds and bees could be silenced, and deer and other animals may exhibit unusual behavior. While there are no proven effects on humans, you're going to want the proper eyewear, as a retinal burn is absolutely possible if you stare directly at the sun even for only a few seconds. If you need eclipse glasses, NYC libraries will be distributing.

  • Can the eclipse impact your astrological sign? An astrologer weighs in

If you are driving Monday afternoon, regardless of location, please be vigilant -- Don't look up. Everyone, including their pets, will likely be distracted by the event. In fact, JAMA recently revealed a study, in conjunction with data from the NTSB, that showed during the 2017 solar eclipse, car crash fatalities were up significantly surrounding the eclipse exposure interval.

Our last total solar eclipse was fairly recent, just a few moons ago in 2017. However, the next one passing the continental U.S. will not happen until 2044. The next New York state total eclipse will not occur until 2079.

This is so cool. Best of luck to all of our "umbraphiles!"

What time does the April 8 solar eclipse peak in the Corning area? When, where to watch

While corning is just outside the path of totality, viewers will still be treated to an incredible show. here's a guide to watching locally..

places to visit corning ny

On April 8, the Great American total solar eclipse will hit New York as the rare astronomical phenomenon is set to darken the skies of 29 Empire State counties.

A total solar eclipse, which will be visible to millions of Americans in the path of totality, happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, completely blocking the face of the sun and darkening the sky as if it were dawn or dusk.

The April 8 event will be New York state's first total solar eclipse in nearly a century, and the next one won’t come around for 75 years.

While Corning is just outside the path of totality, in a "deep partial" eclipse area, local viewers will still be treated to an incredible show.

What time will the solar eclipse peak in the Corning area?

The partial eclipse will arrive in Corning starting at 2:07 p.m. on April 8. The moon will begin to appear to move in front of the sun.

Maximum coverage begins at 3:22 p.m. and by 4:33 p.m. the moon will have moved past the sun completely, returning the light to normal.

Here’s the precise timing for the event locally:

  • Corning: Partial eclipse starts at 2:07:10, maximum coverage at 3:22:10 p.m.
  • Painted Post: Partial eclipse starts at 2:07:00 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:22:10 p.m.
  • Addison: Partial eclipse starts 2:07:10 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:22:00 p.m.
  • Campbell: Partial eclipse starts at 2:07:00 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:22:10 p.m.
  • Big Flats: Partial eclipse starts at 2:07:20 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:22:30 p.m.
  • Bath: Partial eclipse starts at 2:07:00 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:22:00 p.m.
  • Elkland, Pa.: Partial eclipse starts at 2:06:40 p.m., maximum coverage at 3:21:50 p.m.

The best places to witness the eclipse include open parks or waterfront areas with unobstructed views of the sky.

Safety glasses needed for safe viewing of eclipse

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the moon completely blocks the sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing .

NASA offers recommendations for people who want to view the event without endangering their eyesight.

The safest way to watch the eclipse is with safe solar viewing glasses (eclipse glasses), according to NASA.

The space agency emphasizes eclipse glasses are not the same as regular sunglasses — they are thousands of times darker.

The other option is to use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector, which has a small opening, for instance a hole punched in an index card, and projects an image of the sun onto a nearby surface.

NASA also strongly advises viewers not to look at the sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device, even while wearing eclipse glasses, as the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.
