Hamilton is by far Ontario’s most underrated city for travel.

Overshadowed by its big sister Toronto and the enchanting Niagara Falls just 72km to the east, most people who travel to the area have unfortunately never even heard of Hamilton.

But Hamilton is a small city that packs a big punch, full of natural beauty and vibrant city life. 

Named after George Hamilton, a Canadian merchant, the city saw major growth when a canal was cut in Lake Ontario, making Hamilton a major port in 1832.

By the early 1900s the steel and manufacturing industry was booming with four major companies opening up shop in Hamilton, Stelco, Dofasco, Procter & Gamble, and the Beech-Nut Packing Company.

Hamilton is located in the “armpit” of Ontario, where the western end of Lake Ontario meets the Niagara Escarpment.

Known for its steel manufacturing, which earned it the nickname “steeltown,” Hamilton is much more than just an industrial city.

With the Niagara Escarpment , a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, running right through the middle of the city, and the south shores of Lake Ontario in the downtown area, Hamilton is an outdoor lover’s paradise.

With over 100 waterfalls and cascades located throughout the city of Hamilton, it’s plain to see why the city earned the nickname “City of Waterfalls”.

The Niagara Escarpment , the very same region that the renowned Niagara Falls is on, provides the best landscape for waterfalls.

Most of these waterfalls are very accessible and a few are even right in town! You can find several while hiking the popular Bruce Trail as well.

Plan to see the spectacular Webster’s Falls and Tew’s Falls on the same day as they are both located within the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area.

Webster’s Falls is the largest of all the falls in Hamilton with a 30-metre crest. Tew’s Falls is the tallest at 41 metres. They are highlights of Ontario and the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area.

The other most popular falls are Albion Falls and the Devil’s Punchbowl Falls.

Albion Falls is a beautiful 19-metre cascade falls and is a short hike off the Bruce Trail.

While there make sure to stop to see Buttermilk Falls just 1 minute up the road.

Devil’s Punchbowl Falls is the most unique waterfall out of the group and is a 37-metre ribbon waterfall that flows over a horseshoe-shaped cliff with colourful layers of stratified rock segments.

It is possible to do the last three waterfalls in one day.

Canada’s most famous warship is docked at pier 9 right in Hamilton Harbour.

A Canadian National Historic Site and the only Tribal Class Destroyer in existence is now a museum that you can board and explore!

The HMCS Haida served in World War II and the Korean and Cold Wars.

A National Historic Site of Canada, Dundurn Castle is a neoclassical mansion built in 1835 by architect Robert Charles Wetherell and owned by 1st Baronet, Sir Allan Napier MacNab.

At over 18,000 square feet with forty rooms, Dundurn Castle took three years to build!

MacNab, known to throw extravagant parties, once entertained the likes of King Edward VII and Sir. John A. MacDonald.

Experience what it was like to live in the mid 19th century as you tour ornately decorated bedrooms and halls to the underground slave quarters and beautifully landscaped courtyards.

If you’re looking for some of the best things to do in Hamilton once the sun goes down, a stroll through Hess Village will give you a little bit of everything you could ask for.

A walk through Hess Village will lead you past historic buildings that have been turned into fantastic pubs, restaurants, cafes and art galleries.

Find plenty of delicious things to eat as you stroll through and people watch.

The cobbled street has been turned into a pedestrian-only walkway from Main St to King St West.

Located on the western end of Lake Ontario the port city of Hamilton has long been one of Canada's most important industrial centers, but it has also become a popular place to visit, with plenty of things to keep visitors busy. It's an easy day trip from Toronto and less than 40 minutes from Niagara Falls .

Venture inland from the lakeshore up onto the "mountain," as the Niagara Escarpment is known to locals, and you'll find countless pretty waterfalls , most of them easily accessible by pleasant hiking trails.

And, for die-hard hikers, Hamilton makes the perfect jumping-off spot to explore the famous Bruce Trail, which at 890 kilometers in length is the country's longest and oldest trail .

Add to this mix other rewarding places to visit like well-marked conservation areas, museums and art galleries, as well as a vibrant food and drink scene, and you'll not run out of things to do in Hamilton, Ontario.

Built in 1835, Dundurn Castle is as close as you'll get to an authentic Regency-style manor house anywhere in Canada. Consisting of more than 1,700 square meters of living space and some 40 rooms, its most striking feature is its stunning Neoclassical design, most notably the four huge pillars at its main entrance.

The home of businessman Sir Allan MacNab, who became prime minister of Canada in 1854, this striking building featured many innovations in its construction, including running water and gas lighting. Purchased by the City of Hamilton around 1900, the building has been carefully restored to look just as it would have in 1855.

Highlights of a visit include seeing original décor and furnishings, as well as anecdotes and history shared by the well-informed costumed guides. If you're visiting in winter, you'll get to see the house decorated for Christmas festivities. Be sure to check into the availability of the fun cooking classes on offer in the home's historic kitchen.

In addition to the building's interior, be sure to explore the grounds, too. Along the way, you'll see the splendid folly, a two-acre kitchen garden (still in use), and the old coach house (now a shop).

Free garden tours are also available and are highly recommended; you'll be rewarded with superb views over Burlington Bay and Bayfront Park, along with some memorable selfies with this grand old home as a backdrop.

Walking the length of the Bruce Trail is an 890-kilometer-long bucket list item for diehard hikers. It stretches from the mighty Niagara Falls all the way north to Tobermory on Lake Huron , passing through the ski resort of Blue Mountain and nearby Collingwood on the way. Fortunately for the rest of us, this epic hiking trail can be broken down into manageable bits that lend themselves perfectly to bite-sized adventures.

Given its location on the Niagara Escarpment, an area of outstanding natural beauty that's been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Hamilton makes for the perfect jumping-off spot for those wanting to tackle one of the prettiest sections of this iconic trail, which is one of Canada's best hikes .

Along the way, you'll pass some of the escarpment's most spectacular waterfalls, including the pretty Canterbury Falls . Located in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area just a few minutes west of downtown Hamilton, the Bruce Trail passes directly by the falls.

Although officially a part of the neighboring city of Burlington , Ontario, the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) should definitely be included on your list of things to do in Hamilton. Exploring this spectacular attraction, just 10 minutes' drive east of Hamilton, can easily occupy the best part of a day, so be sure to plan accordingly, and take good walking shoes.

Covering a vast area of over 2,420 acres, the gardens are rich in biodiversity and are home to more than 1,100 species of plants, many of them native to the region. Among the rarest of plant species found here are the aptly named bashful bulrush and the endangered red mulberry tree.

It's also well-known among birders, who can expect to see a variety of species year-round. Of the 300 species that can be seen here, most are passing through on their way to warmer climes.

The gardens are broken into a number of areas, one of the largest being Hendrie Park, the RBG's largest cultivated gardens. Here, you'll find the impressive Rose Garden, which includes a variety of hardier, cold-weather Canadian types, and the attractive Morrison Woodland Garden, an especially lovely spot to visit in spring when the forest floor is littered with trilliums, the official provincial flower.

If you're visiting in winter, be sure to check out the RBG's official website for news of events and festivals . Highlights include an impressive display of Christmas lights, festive treats, and music.

Home to one of Canada's largest historic military collections, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is a must-visit at any time of year. Located at Hamilton's international airport, its static displays include 47 military aircraft ranging from WWI-era prop jobs to more modern jet fighters.

The majority of these classic old planes are fully restored and operable. No two visits are quite the same, as they're frequently moved in and out of the huge hangar that serves as the museum. Also interesting is the fact that there's always a plane undergoing restoration in the main hanger, allowing visitors to observe and interact with those working on these machines.

The star of the show, though, is its Avro Lancaster. One of only two of these iconic WW2 bombers still able to fly, this aircraft is often out on display at air shows and events, so call ahead of time to see if she's home. Other rare aircraft include a Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire, both well-known for their roles in the Battle of Britain.

If possible, try to time your visit to coincide with the museum's annual air show. Better still, splash out on the rare opportunity to actually fly in one of these vintage aircraft. A large gift shop and café are located on the premises.

Nicknamed Canada's "fightingest ship" for its record of sinking the most enemy tonnage while serving the country's navy in WW2, HMCS Haida National Historic Site is another waterfront tourist attraction to add to your Hamilton travel itinerary.

Built in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Britain and launched in 1943, this historic destroyer is easily accessed from her berth at Hamilton's Pier 9. Designated a National Historic Site, this well-preserved museum ship is fun to explore for all ages.

Highlights of a visit include seeing the often "tight" sleeping and eating quarters shared by the ship's crew of over 250 men, along with the officer's quarters, the engine room, and the bridge. There's plenty of hands-on fun to be had, too, including trying your hand at Morse code, as well as using vintage RADAR equipment to "search" for enemy submarines.

A number of informative guided tours are available and last around an hour. On special occasions, you can even witness the ship's deck guns being fired.

Of the more than 100 waterfalls known to be located on the Niagara Escarpment, many of the most picturesque can be found within the city limits of Hamilton. The most popular of these is the spectacular Albion Falls , also known as "lover's leap."

Standing nearly 20 meters tall, this cascade falls is located where the fast flowing Red Hill Creek flows over the escarpment, along the way passing over a number of downward steps that add significantly to the appeal. Some of the best views can be had from King's Forest Park. While especially pretty in the fall, it can get busy, so try to avoid weekends in September and October if you can.

Other Hamilton waterfalls can be reached by following well-marked trails. One of the most popular routes is the "Great Falls Loop." This pleasant 3.5-kilometer escarpment route features superb views over the surrounding countryside, taking in Great Falls along the way.

Also worth seeing is Tews Falls. Standing 41 meters tall, this ribbon waterfalls can be found in the Webster's Falls Conservation Area in Dundas, and is best visited in warmer weather.

Other notable waterfalls to visit include the 37-meter-tall Devil's Punch Bowl, located in the conservation area of the same name; picturesque Webster's Falls, standing 22 meters; and the 21-meter-tall Tiffany Falls.

Once considered something of an industrial wasteland — it was (and in some areas, still is) home to heavy industry — Hamilton's waterfront has been the subject of an ambitious regeneration scheme over the past decade or so.

Located to the west end of Hamilton Harbour, Bayfront Park is central to this revitalization and has been transformed from a former landfill site into one of the city's most attractive green spaces.

Circled by a network of level trails (including some for bikes) that connect to an additional six acres of green space at Pier 4 Park (and even farther if you follow the Waterfront Trail), it's a delightful place to visit. Highlights of the 1,800 meters of shoreline include a natural fish habitat, a sandy beach that's great for kids, a public boat launch plus a nearby marina, and plenty of parking.

There's good fishing here, too, so make sure your permit is up-to-date. If visiting in summer, check the city's events calendar for news and details of the frequent concerts and festivals held here.

Located in East Hamilton, a few minutes' drive from downtown, Gage Park is well worth including on your Hamilton travel itinerary. One of the city's most popular green spaces, the park was established in the 1920s and features numerous flowerbeds that blossom each spring, an historic fountain, as well as plenty of trees providing shade for those wanting to linger and enjoy a picnic.

The highlight of a visit is exploring the park's new Tropical Greenhouse . Opened in 2020, this vast 14,000 square foot structure is home to numerous subtropical plants and palm trees, and is open to the public year-round. Other features include waterfalls and fish ponds, as well as seating for those who want to soak up the ambience.

Those with a penchant for art would do well to visit the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) . It was established in 1914 and later moved to its current location on King Street West, a modern-style building designed by Trevor P. Garwood-Jones, in 1977. There's more than 7,000 square meters of museum space to explore here.

Featuring over 10,000 artworks, the museum has built a reputation for the importance of its permanent collection, which includes numerous works by Canadian artists. It also features works by international contemporary artists.

In addition to rotating displays from its permanent collection, the museum also features regular visiting exhibits ; while general admission is free, entrance is charged for traveling exhibits, except for "free Fridays," when all admissions are complimentary. Guided tours are available, and a good café is located on-site, along with a gift shop.

A visit to the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology offers a fascinating glimpse at what would have been a state-of-the-art waterworks in Victorian times. Housed in a building constructed in 1859 in the Hamilton Waterworks complex, the Steam Museum is a one-of-kind relic that has preserved the original steam engines that pumped water across the city until it closed in 1910.

As impressive as the scale of the machinery is its elegant design. As well as being functional, this "new" technology had to impress investors and customers, who had to pay for the privilege of having water delivered to their homes.

In addition to a short informative movie, visitors are given a fascinating guided tour around the complex.

Centered around the elegant mansion constructed in 1796, Battlefield House Museum and Park National Historic Site is a must-visit for those interested in Hamilton's rich history.

It was on this site in 1813 that British troops faced off against American invaders during the Battle of Stoney Creek , a pivotal confrontation in the War of 1812 that turned the tide of the conflict in Britain's favor.

In addition to exploring the 32-acre grounds, visitors can also enjoy an informative guided tour of the home itself. Pay a visit to the 100-foot-tall monument behind the home, built in 1913 to commemorate the event, as well as the original colonial style home that now serves as a gift shop and event space.

Located in the community of Rockton just 25 minutes' drive west of Hamilton, Westfield Heritage Village has done an impressive job of preserving a snapshot of the region's past. It consists of 35 historic buildings reconstructed around a central "village" on an 840-acre site.

Highlights include the opportunity to interact with costumed interpreters as they recreate the lives and culture of Canadians from the 1800s to the early 1900s. Also fun is paying a visit to the reproduction general store, complete with traditional candies for purchase, as well as the maple sugar shack. If you're traveling with kids, encourage them to dress up in the period costumes provided.

Guided sightseeing tours are available, and regular demonstrations of skills and crafts are held throughout the day. Be sure to also spend time exploring the grounds, which feature pleasant trails through the meadows and woods of its designated conservation area.

Established in 1963 to honor the nation's "other" most popular sport (the most popular being hockey), the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is a must-visit for sports fans when in Hamilton. Located in the Tim Hortons Field stadium , which serves as home to the Hamilton Tiger Cats football team, the museum is run by the Canadian Football League to celebrate the sport and its players.

Exhibits include the history of the sport in Canada, as well as university and school football. Displays of players' uniforms and stats are featured heavily, along with over 250 metallic busts of many of the big stars from the game.

The most iconic sculpture, though, stands outside the stadium's gate 3. Called "Touchdown," this life-size sculpture depicts two players, one receiving the ball while the other tackles him. Admission to the museum is free on game days.

If you've only got time to see just a little of the sprawling Royal Botanical Gardens, make it the Rock Garden . The RBG's first garden and the only part of this popular Ontario attraction to actually be located in Hamilton proper, the Rock Garden opened in 1932 and features stunning year-round displays of perennials and other garden features spread across its six acres.

Highlights include more than 10,000 individual plants, attractive water and landscape features, and an excellent on-site restaurant.

2 Days in Hamilton Itinerary (by a local!)

Whether you’re just in Hamilton for a weekend trip or are as part of a bigger North Island trip , 2 days in Hamilton is the perfect amount of time to see the city.

There aren’t many New Zealand cities with a better mix of attractions and nature than Hamilton and this 2 day Hamilton itinerary has some of both included for the ultimate Hamilton weekend or day trip.

New Zealand ‘s fourth-largest city is often overlooked as a travel destination but Hamilton, built around the Waikato River, is the ideal stop-off on your way between Auckland to the north and the mountains or beaches to the south. If you are doing a New Zealand road trip , you have to visit Hamilton.

I grew up in Hamilton and love to show off my hometown so you can be assured that this Hamilton itinerary really is a local’s guide with lots of hidden gems and hot tips, as well as the big-ticket attractions you can’t miss.

2 Days in Hamilton Weekend Itinerary

Bonus: friday night – arriving in hamilton.

Celebrate the weekend with great food and drink at one of the Good George Brew Bars in Rototuna (in North Hamilton) or Frankton (on the south side of the city).

Good George is Hamilton’s original craft beer brewer and is now popular nationwide and even in Australia. The Frankton outlet offers brewery tours otherwise you can find their full range available at all venues as well as reliably good pub food and a buzzing atmosphere. Try the Doris Plum Cider or one of the new gins.

If you’re looking for something a bit fancier then try the tapas selection at Gothenburg restaurant, it’s got an unbeatable location right on the river. Then wind up the night with a cocktail at Wonderhorse Bar.

Day 1 in Hamilton

Start the day the right way with brunch at The Kirk Cafe in Hamilton East. This was originally the office of St Andrews Presbyterian church but has now been transformed into Hamilton’s most Instagrammable café with breakfasts that look too good to eat.

If you’re feeling the need to walk off brunch, you can head down to the riverfront path that runs the length of the city. You can access the path by each of the five bridges in the central city or off the main street.

The shaded path looks quite magical on winter mornings with the fog rolling off the Waikato River and is very popular with local runners and cyclists.

Otherwise, if you have kids head to Lake Rotoroa where there’s an enormous playground. You can also stroll along the 1.7km boardwalk that loops around the lake passing many of the city’s most ostentatious houses.

Quite often there are rowing, sailing or dragon-boating regattas taking place on the lake that you can watch from the playground or as you walk. The Verandah Cafe by the lake is also quite good.

Pop up from the river path onto Victoria Street in the CBD and head to the Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato . Here you can learn about the region’s history and its Maori founders and see Te Winika, an original 200-year old waka gifted by the previous Maori queen.

Once you’ve had your fill of history, it’s only a short walk down to The Riverbank Lane for lunch. Try a range of fresh Vietnamese plates at Banh Mi Caphe or grab a table overlooking the river at Mr. Pickles.

Whatever you choose, definitely don’t miss Duck Island Ice Cream. This innovative ice cream store has quickly become a Hamilton institution, offering Kiwi favourites like fairy bread and lolly cake as well as unique combinations like roasted white chocolate miso.

After lunch, spend a lazy afternoon digging through the second-hand books at Browsers Bookstore (also in Riverbank Lane) and the shops along Victoria Street.

Day 2 in Hamilton

The Waikato Farmers Market is the place to be on Sunday morning. Held at the Claudelands showgrounds (after it outgrew its riverside home), the market showcases the best produce of the region. You can find excellent coffee here and all the stallholders are happy to offer samples and a chat.

Make sure to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch to take with you when you head off to the Hamilton Gardens on the eastern end of the city. The collection of themed gardens is deservedly famous but rarely busy.

You can book a Hamilton Gardens Walking Tour where a local guide will fill you in on all the detail of each garden theme, or explore at your own pace.

Make sure to check out the Italian Renaissance and Indian gardens which are popular spots for photos before finding a spot for lunch on one of the lawns (avoid the lack unless you want to fight off ducks).

If you need to recaffeinate after the trip to the gardens, drop into Grey Street Kitchen in Hamilton East. The barista here has won several national awards.

While you’re there, you might find a hidden treasure in Hamilton East’s weekend flea markets, or otherwise, stop into one of the boutiques down the laneways off Grey Street. My favourite is Love Lane, which has everything from a plant boutique to yoga.

How to Get To Hamilton, New Zealand

Hamilton is 1.5 hours’ drive south of Auckland on State Highway 1. You can hire a car from Auckland Airport where there are a number of major rental companies.

Getting to Hamilton By Bus

The Intercity bus runs services between Hamilton and Auckland (stopping at the airport, city centre and Manukau) several times a day. Fares start from $20 per adult and are cheaper if booked well in advance.

Getting to Hamilton By Train

There is a Hamilton-Auckland train that runs from Frankton in Hamiltons’ Southwestern suburbs to The Strand on Auckland’s Waterfront.

It’s very convenient and usually cheaper than the bus, but departure times are very limited (twice a day during the week and once on weekends).

Flying to Hamilton, New Zealand

Domestic passengers can fly into Hamilton Airport from Wellington or Christchurch with 2-3 flights from either city most days. These are regional routes operated by Air New Zealand so the planes are smaller and tickets can be very expensive if booked at short notice.

I recommend signing up for Air New Zealand’s Grabaseat emails and waiting for a sale.

There are no real luxury hotels in Hamilton itself. However, there are a few country estates in the outskirts of the city that are beautiful and peaceful if you have a car and are willing to stay a bit further out. Hamilton’s hostel scene is fairly limited however there are a couple of options that are close to the CBD. The Backpacker’s Central Hamilton is small but functional and right on the main road.

The city centre has a number of second hand shops especially in the city centre. They are clustered around  Liverpool Street, Ulster Street, River Road and Te Aroha Street in Hamilton Central.

The Base on Te Rapa Road. This huge shopping centre is a large retail mall where pretty much everything you would want can be found there. Dress-Smart Outlet Shopping Centre is located at The Base. Other major retail centres are Chartwell Shopping Centre & Centre Place, part of the CBD.

Ground-breaking ‘Hamilton’ brings American history to life at Van Wezel

Nine years after it made a triumphant debut at New York’s Public Theater and a quick move to Broadway where it became the biggest hit since “The Lion King,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s biographical musical “Hamilton” arrives in Srasota. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall will now be the room where it happens for two weeks.

Based on Ron Chernow’s in-depth biography of the nation’s first Treasury Secretary, the show uses hip-hop, rap and Broadway styles to bring life to a number of figures in American history, including George Washington (before he was president), Thomas Jefferson and French military officer the Marquis de Lafayette.

At the center of a fast-moving storm is Alexander Hamilton, who prior to the musical was probably best known as the face on the $10 bill and being killed in a duel with his rival Aaron Burr.

The musical quickly became a sensation and the most hard-to-get ticket on Broadway and its initial national tours. It made Miranda, who wrote the book, music and lyrics, one of the most prominent artists in theater and film. The musical, directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, won 11 2016 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Some of the frenzy has faded and there are still a limited number of tickets for the Sarasota run March 26-April 7. Executive Director Mary Bensel said the show has sold about 89 percent of all available tickets.

Miranda got the idea for the show during a vacation after creating and starring in the Tony Award-winning musical “In the Heights.” He has said he picked up Chernow’s book on Hamilton to read during a vacation, and it inspired more musical ideas. He thought of making a concept album and performed a bit of the opening segment in a “White House Poetry Jam” in 2009 and got encouragement from President Barack Obama. Then the idea evolved into a full-fledged musical that took several years to develop.

New cast takes over

Many of the leading cast members in the touring production began playing their roles full-time just a few weeks ago, some of them after years of involvement in other parts or as standbys and understudies. (The changeover was so recent that new production photos were not available in time for this story.)

Blaine Alden Krauss, who grew up performing in the Tampa area, took over the title role on Feb. 26, but he first joined the musical a few months before the pandemic shutdown and has been with the production on and off since. For the last few months, he was playing Burr, which has allowed him to see the personal and political stories from different sides.

“I had a unique opportunity, especially being standby for both Hamilton and Burr, to get to know both of these guys,” he said in a telephone interview. “Having gone through the character work I did for Burr, I know the things that make him tick and I have that perspective now that I’m playing Hamilton. It’s a unique advantage to shine and bring that out.”

His co-star Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama recently took over the role of Eliza Schuyler, who becomes Hamilton’s wife. She had been playing Eliza’s younger sister Peggy.  

She also has understudied or covered most of the female roles for several years, which gives her a “very clear understanding of what’s going on in certain parts of the show.”

She said playing Peggy was “a great stepping stone to prepare me for eight shows a week.”

In the show, Eliza provides the heart to contrast her husband’s fierce work ethic. Alexander was orphaned as a child, educated in New York, became a lawyer, wheedled his way in to become an aide to General George Washington, founded the Bank of New York and led the push to adopt the U.S. Constitution by writing 51 of the 85 Federalist Papers. After he was elected President, Washington named Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury.

A recurring theme is that he was an overachiever because he didn’t believe he would live a long life.

“Why do you write like you’re running out of time,” the characters sing in the song “Non-Stop.” “Write day and night like you’re running out of time.”

Yokokayama said Eliza has a soft power. “Without her, the show wouldn’t be the same. She was dedicated to defending his work and legacy and fight other people when they were trying to claim that Hamilton was this, that and the other after he was dead.” After his death, she co-founded the first private orphanage in New York City.

The musical doesn’t shy away from issues that cast a harsh light on Hamilton, from the scandal of his affair with a married woman, which essentially ruined his political and legal career, to his flirtations with Eliza’s other sister, Angelica. According to Chernow, there was so much affection expressed in correspondence between Hamilton and Angelica that “many people assumed they were lovers. At the very least, theirs was a friendship of unusual ardor.”

Shifting perspectives in new roles

Hamilton died in 1804 during the duel with Burr, and Krauss said the two men couldn’t have been more different.

“Burr looks at Hamilton as someone who is relentless and doesn’t take no for an answer and given any opportunity he will always speak and say what’s on his mind,” he said. “Burr is the opposite, more calculated and reserved.” 

During their many encounters, Burr advises the younger Hamilton to “talk less, smile more. Don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for.” It’s advice that Hamilton can’t abide, which is why Krauss approaches the two roles so differently.

“As Hamilton, I try to be on the front foot, someone who is so energetic and speaking faster than people can comprehend what he’s saying. His greatest strength is his mind and his ability to communicate, but it’s also his greatest folly. My view of Hamilton is ultimately he was trying to make his mother proud. I tap into that, to be as relentlessly as I can.”

Audience preparation

The show is filled with quick-paced musical numbers and rapid-fire rap lyrics, particularly those performed by Jared Howleton, who plays both Thomas Jefferson and the French military officer the Marquis de Lafayette.

Though many may have seen the show in previous tour stops, on Broadway, or in the original production that was captured for streaming on Disney+, both actors believe it’s smart for newcomers to listen to the cast album in advance to prepare themselves.

“It moves quickly,” Krauss said. “We’re talking about the lifespan of a character and it’s so layered with political commentary, musical theater history, rap and hip-hop references that different people catch on to,” he said. 

Yokoyama said she agrees “100,000 percent” about preparing. “Especially all the Lafayette and Jefferson raps. I don’t even know the words completely and I’ve been in the show so many times. There’s so much you can learn from listening and then just going to enjoy it. You don’t have to think too hard, just enjoy the work we’re doing and how what we do is different from what you see on Disney+.”

Starting a career in Florida

Playing Hamilton is a major step in Krauss’ career after many years of understudying other roles. 

“I understudied Wayne Brady in ‘Kinky Boots’ My first role was understudy for Simba in the tour of ‘The Lion King.’ I understudied Lucas Steel in ‘Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812’ on Broadway. So to walk in and have my name on the dressing room, it just means that I’m ready in my time and career for that responsibility.”

Krauss said the show is unique in the diversity of the crowds it attracts.

“Name any other show where political nerds, history buffs, people who like hip-hop and rap culture, true fans of musical theater and kids who come dressed up as the characters in full costume, can all come together in one space,” he said. “This is a show told by Americans who look like Americans today. It’s a commentary on the Founding Fathers and what they really wanted and a testament to the brilliance of the music. He wrote every genre possible. It’s layered, fun and catchy.”

Krauss first saw the show by winning one of the lottery tickets that are made available for $10 for every performance on the day of the show.

“I literally won a front-row seat. I remember the show being such a blur of excitement. It was so fast, the lighting, dancing. It all moves so quickly,” he said. “But I was also devastated by the emotional depth of the story. I admired that but, of course, I didn’t know how taxing that is on the performances.”

As he’s adjusting to the role, Krauss realizes that the musical “is not only one of the most physically demanding shows, but it’s also super emotional. It’s like ‘Les Miz.’ It’s operatic in its storytelling. Every scene is like a literal life and death and at the end of the show I feel like a semi-truck has hit me. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that. It’s really rewarding, but it’s hard work. I’ve done a lot of great Broadway shows, but to play a character like this and lead a company like this is a dream.”

What is your fondest memory you have had at the Met Gala?

Oh geez. These two pictures.

I think the blue one was one of my first times that I went.

I think my fondest memory is the last time that I went.

It is such a glamorous and beautiful event

and you feel really privileged

to have the opportunity to go.

But I really, I kind of, over time I was kinda like,

Okay, I've been a few times.

I felt like I wanted to utilize the opportunity

to help people so I felt like, I was like,

Maybe that's a good opportunity to bring

some great young designers that perhaps would never

put the spotlight on them, which we did.

It was really beautiful for us to see the attention

Getting the CFD award, just to be a little bit part of that

really, like, made me proud to be a part of it.

What obstacles has Lewis Hamilton

had to overcome during his career?

Well, I mean it's been a long period of time

that I've been racing since I was eight.

Obstacles were funding, finding sponsorship and support

was key to me getting to where I am today.

Not really fitting in in a sport which was white dominated

and this wasn't an area that was diverse.

We were the only Black family on the scene.

So experienced a lot of racism, a lot of pushback.

And so just trying to fit in and struggling

with that acceptance was a big, big obstacle to overcome.

In my sport you are constantly faced with challenges.

You can't always win, naturally.

The natural highs you get are amazing

and then you have these lows.

The challenge of the mental side,

mental stability, mental health has been

a huge part of my whole journey.

Probably since I was 11, I would say,

is when it really started to become a real challenge.

I went to do karate when I was six

'cause I was getting bullied at school

'cause I wanted to be able to protect myself

and then I was seeing other kids getting bullied

and I wanted to be able to help them,

but when I step in I'll just get beaten up too.

And I was a small kid, so those are things

that I encountered and I wanted to be able to overcome.

What exactly are the things Lewis Hamilton is good at?

And then someone's answered,

He's probably the best on the grid under the brakes,

which is a big part of why he turns in good laps

and good at overtaking.

That is definitely an element of one of my strengths.

that actually started from Wright House.

My dad, when we started racing when I was eight,

my dad went and stood on the track and he was watching,

like, the quickest kid at the time.

There was, like, two or three kids at the fastest

in the class that I was in and he went and stood

where they were braking and then he made me brake

and then he walked, like, several meters later

or five meters later, whatever, and then he said,

This is where you brake.

And I was like, Yeah, but Dad I can't brake there.

And at the time believing that I can't

was a part of my vocabulary, he says, Yes, you can.

So I practiced, practiced, try and brake there, spin off,

and over time, after 1000 tries or whatever it was,

eventually I could brake there.

Just shows it firstly there's no such thing as can't,

or can't, whatever the Americans say.

And then when you fail you try again.

You fail, you try again.

There's no such thing as actually failure.

It's just a lesson.

but one of them was pooing in my bedroom.

which is right over, like, a vent, so the smell [laughs]

was just hitting me and waking me up. [laughs]

I got the opportunity to be in Fortnite.

It's a game that I played for a long time,

but I said only if Roscoe could be in it.

They were like, No problem.

So Roscoe is, like, in my jet pack,

like, hovering behind me as he's my psychic.

Everything we know about the upcoming

Lewis Hamilton-Brad Pitt racing film project,

which the F1 star says would be

the greatest racing movie ever.

A racing Top Gun? Please let this be true.

It is one of the most exciting things

that I'm fortunate to be a part of.

I'm learning a lot of this from the beginning

when we were sitting with Brad and, you know,

Aaron, the writer, and Joe.

I think from my perspective, just trying to make sure

that it's authentic, that it's as authentic

a racing movie as possible, which having watched

a lot of racing movies is one of the most difficult

movies to depict, I think, and to capture.

Obviously the technology is much more advanced

than it was back in the day when they had, you know,

the cameras, like, sellotaped to their heads.

Loved watching movies since I was a kid.

Seeing, like, Interview with a Vampire 1000 times,

seeing Top Gun, and all these great movies where you see

these individuals who's bring these movies to life.

And then to be standing with Brad talking about racing

and him wanting to learn about racing

and explaining to him from the braking point

to the turning point to apex, all these different things.

And then being on the track with Brad and having him drive.

We were in LA and we went to this track

and I showed him around

and nearly put the car on a wall, actually.

Well, I was just on the edge, wasn't really near,

but a hair raising moment.

He's got a real knack for it already.

So he's just been working on honing on that skill.

But every now and then you're just like,

to be releasing some music?

Yeah, geez. I've done music for such a long time.

I think I started doing music when I was, like, 16.

Properly record my first song till I was about 21.

But I have some new stuff so we will see.

One of my bedrooms at home. I have set up

with some really great speakers so I have

my own little setup and I just record myself.

When I'm in LA more often than not we go to a studio.

I've recently rented a house in December

and did this whole writing camp and I had a whole group

of people with me that massively talented individuals

and we had three rooms and I was bouncing between each room

and so I did that and when I was in Jamaica

I was doing music every day.

I've got some new stuff.

I need to finish it, put it together,

and then maybe I've share it with you.

What's your favorite drink? The wife wants to know.

Honestly I don't like promoting stuff

but my favorite drink right now is Almave.

It's my non-alcoholic tequila that we've spent the last,

like, 20 months putting together

and going through the whole tasting process,

going out to Mexico City and out to Jalisco,

where tequila's made, understanding the process

and that's been so exciting, to see something born

and then something that you genuinely love.

You know, 'cause I don't drink, so it's a perfect one

to be able to wind down, particularly after a long day.

the countries to travel to when you're on your break

and are there any on your bucket list?

I have been to India, but I've not actually

traveled through India, I really want to go back to India.

But one of my dreams is to travel,

hike through the Himalayas.

I want to climb Mount Everest one day.

That's definitely on the bucket list.

There's still a lot of countries in Africa

that I really want to visit like Nigeria, Ghana, Madagascar.

I mean, there's a lot there that I still haven't

been to see and experience.

I've downloaded this app and I've put in all the places

I've been, I think it's called Been.

I've only seen, like, 33% of the of the world.

So there's still so much to discover.

How I picked the places that I go to nowadays

is apart from places that I have been to before

that I feel comfortable in, I feel, you know,

where I might really fully unplug and disengage

from this crazy world that we live in.

But I like to try and create

great memories and that on a trip.

I wanna learn something as well.

So I learn things about cultures

and these different places that I go to.

Yeah, I want it to be a bit of a learning experience.

I don't like being on the beach.

Who is your favorite sporter outside of motor sport?

Serena. Has to be Serena.

She's just a bundle of fun, great energy,

serious competitor, loves karaoke, like,

with a real passion, and just playing.

She's just a really playful person.

That's a difficult one to answer short, but I think

helping people is something that I'm passionate about,

education, knowing that my education

was probably the worst part of my life and it is

for so many people that are struggling.

So many people don't have access to education,

but so many people are being excluded within schools.

So many people are struggling

with so many different things going into school,

mostly often affected from things that are happening

outside of school, whether it's on the way to school,

whether it's, you know, social settings or at home.

And I would really, really want to help tackle that

'cause I've been and experienced that through my life.

If there's a little me or a little young girl out there

that's experiencing something similar,

I wanna work towards fixing that, that everyone gets

a good education no matter where you're from

and what your socioeconomic background is.

Niagara Falls declares state of emergency in advance of huge influx of eclipse visitors

The mayor of Niagara Falls, Ont., says a state of emergency declared in the region is a precautionary measure ahead of an expected large influx of people coming to observe the total solar eclipse.

More than a million people are expected to flock to the border city, home to the iconic waterfall, on April 8 to observe the moon entirely blocking the sun's rays for a few minutes, Jim Diodati told CBC News on Friday.

He said it would be the largest single-day spike in tourists in the city's history.

The expected large crowds — which Diodati says will include scientists from the Canadian Space Agency and NASA — prompted the Niagara region to declare a state of emergency on Thursday.

The measure, it says, "strengthens the tools the region has at its disposal to safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect our critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise."

Officials say they are concerned the large number of people could overwhelm traffic, emergency services and cellphone networks.

Diodati noted that by declaring a state of emergency as a precaution, it "potentially opens us up if we need any assistance with funding, provincially or federally."

He added the declaration signals to visitors that they should be "mindful of the situation" and come prepared.

The rare eclipse is expected to be observed in Mexico first at around 11:07 a.m. PT, when the moon will move in between Earth and the sun. Its path will take it through the United States before it moves to parts of southern Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

The eclipse is set to cast a partial shadow in several parts of southern Ontario. Observers in Niagara Falls, as well as those in the nearby communities of Hamilton and Grimsby, can expect total darkness for about three minutes sometime between 2 and 4 p.m. ET.

The total eclipse will be the first seen in Ontario since 1979. National Geographic declared Niagara Falls to be one of the best places to see it.

"It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where one of the great natural wonders is going to meet one of the great celestial events at the same time, at the same place," Diodati said.

Officials expect 150,000 to 575,000 visitors when the total solar eclipse casts its shadow over Ohio on April 8. The 124-mile-wide path of totality  will cross the state from southwest to northeast, briefly blanketing cities like Dayton, Mansfield, Akron and Cleveland in darkness. The total eclipse will last only a few minutes, but some of the state's major highways could be jammed for hours as people head home.

To help emergency responders prepare − and give visitors a preview of what could happen − the Ohio Department of Transportation created an interactive online map forecasting traffic that day.

ODOT spokesman Matt Bruning said the numbers predict possible demand, not the number of vehicles on the road: "The maps were trying to highlight potential areas of concern for safety agencies − not necessarily 'where to avoid' for the public."

When will eclipse traffic be the worst in Ohio? Where?

ODOT mapped out potential scenarios based on the number of visitors to Ohio: 150,000, 350,000, 575,000 and 625,000. Consultants crunched the numbers using anonymized cellphone location data for a typical day in Ohio and travel patterns in Kentucky and Tennessee during the 2017 eclipse.

The April 8 eclipse will begin in southwest Ohio around 3:08 p.m. and last fewer than four minutes, with the exact time depending on your location.

Southwest and central Ohio may experience some gridlock that morning, and all four models show demand increasing in the hours before the eclipse. But the real snarls are expected once it's over. The heaviest traffic appears in the forecast late afternoon and doesn't appear to ease up for hours.

Bruning said ODOT expects the worst congestion in northwest Ohio around Toledo and Findlay, the closest viewing spot for eclipse tourists from Michigan. Other areas that could be busier than normal include Interstate 71 and Interstate 270 in the Columbus area, Interstate 75 from Dayton to Cincinnati and Interstate 77 between Akron and Canton.

How can I prepare for eclipse traffic in Ohio?

The biggest piece of advice: Be patient. Motorists should also keep their gas tank full; pack a cellphone charger, water and snacks; and have a paper map on hand in case cell service is bad.

State officials also recommend eclipse-watchers stay put afterward, instead of hitting the road once it's over. To that end, Ohio's tourism arm  is promoting other activities in the path of totality, from museums and parks to restaurants and breweries.

Ohioans who live within totality are encouraged to watch the eclipse  at or near home.

Travel advisor reveals red flags to look for to not get scammed when planning trips

CHICAGO (CBS) – Spring break may be over for students, but summer vacation is right around the corner.

It's time to start planning.

CBS 2 has reported on stories about travel deal rip-offs in recent months. So here is how to make sure your next trip goes right.

Pinky Jackson earned major grandma points with a surprise trip from Chicago to Broadway in New York City.

"She was so elated," Jackson said of her granddaughter. "She's the biggest fan of Hamilton."

The city that never sleeps showed them a fantastic time, except for the part where the hotel room Jackson's family paid for never materialized.

"I just knew it was, it was a loss," she said. "I had to take it as a loss."

She and other travelers got burned and it wasn't from too much sun. They blamed their vacation fails on a Glenwood man hawking travel packages that left them out of a place to sleep, stuck in airports and more.

Months earlier, CBS 2 met another group duped by Discounted Travel. They were all in court for a theft case against a so-called travel agent from Oak Lawn .

CBS 2 tapped travel advisor Cheryl Richardson from Travel 100 Group in Northfield for help recognizing red flags in the world of trip planning. She said watching CBS 2's previous stories of people losing their money just looking for a deal to go on vacation left her "heartbroken, because people do save for a long time to get on a vacation."

She's seen many parts of the world in her 35 years as a travel advisor. Richardson said to run if someone offers countless flights for a bulk price.

"There is no such thing as a pass for unlimited amounts of flights with any airline," she said.

Another big no-no: booking a trip with Venmo or similar apps.

"I don't even offer Zelle or Apple Pay, anything like that," Richardson said. "Not even Paypal."

She said most people use a credit card because "you have a trail then." Using a credit card also provides a way to dispute a charge if something goes wrong.

Of course, plenty of people schedule their own travel online with no issue, but Richardson said using an experienced agent is safer for their wallet.

"We have vetted all the tour operators, hotels, cruise lines, so, therefore, there's recourse should anything come about," she said.

Consumers can find further protection through the American Society of Travel Advisors. The nonprofit mediates complaints and offers a directory of agents who pledge they'll comply with a code of ethics.

Not on the list is the man Pinky Jackson used for her non-existent hotel room.
