If you're new to the world of private jets , you might be a bit confused as to how companies like XO work. XO , in particular, has a bit of a complicated system, with many options for booking and travel. But if you're ready to upgrade your flight game , here's everything you need to know about XO.

How does XO work?

XO is essentially a ride-share company, but instead of offering transportation via cars, it provides it via a network of more than 2,400 aircraft. You can charter full planes , crowdfund for shared flights, or book individual seats on scheduled routes. For scheduled flights, you don't need to be a paying member of the program to book a ticket, but you do receive discounts if you have a membership. All bookings can be handled via XO's intuitive app , though there are phone representatives on standby. You can also book individual seats on scheduled flights via XO's website.

What planes does XO fly?

There are more than 2,400 planes in the XO alliance, ranging from the seven-passenger Cessna Citation Ultra to the 14-passenger Bombardier Global 7500, the world's fastest and longest-range business jet currently flown. Whatever your needs, XO likely has a jet that can accommodate them.

Where does XO fly?

XO private charters can fly pretty much anywhere in the world, so long as the destination can support the specific type of aircraft you're flying. But the scheduled flights typically run between major cities like New York and Los Angeles (and their suburbs with airports, including Westchester and Burbank) and major seasonal vacation destinations, like South Florida, the Hamptons, Aspen, and Las Vegas. Generally speaking, XO uses private terminals , which eliminate the hassle of standard airport security and allow you to arrive just 30 minutes before your flight.

How much does an XO flight cost?

This varies based on your destination, the type of aircraft, when you're flying, whether you're chartering or traveling on a shared plane, and what type of XO membership you have, if any. Full charters start between $7,500 for a light jet and $14,844 for a heavy jet for short, one-way flights, while one-way, individual seats start at around $1,500, but can easily double during peak travel times. Keep in mind that non-members must pay a $395 fee for each seat booked on scheduled flights.

What types of memberships does XO offer?

If you're planning on booking at least two individual seats on a scheduled flight, you'll want to purchase a Shared Membership for $595 a year. This membership waives the non-member fee of $395 per seat. If you're planning on chartering a private jet, you'll want to upgrade to either the XO Membership or XO Reserve , which require a $100,000 and $250,000 minimum deposit, respectively. Beyond those deposits, these memberships both cost $995 per year.

What are XO member benefits?

XO Membership and XO Reserve members receive special benefits through the company's luxury lifestyle brand partners, including vacation rental company Lacure, Apollo Yachts, Langham Hotels, Avis, and a number of individual hotels. These members also receive a FoundersCard membership, which boasts "high-end lifestyle and travel perks," from networking events to elite status with certain travel brands.

Private jet charters, shared flights and empty legs: Everything you need to know about XO

There are a number of companies offering Uber-like services for private jets , but one of the biggest is XO.

It's an especially great choice for first-time private jet fliers due to its easy-to-use booking platform and lack of membership requirement — but as you'll see, it'll likely make sense for you to get one if you're interested in using the service regularly.

XO made a name for itself through its on-demand charter services. However, it also offers the ability to purchase individual seats on a growing number of regularly scheduled and crowdsourced flights, which have become increasingly popular amid the ongoing shortage of private jets. Further, it allows spontaneous travelers to score amazing deals on empty-leg flights .

Customers have access to a dedicated fleet of over 180 aircraft around the world, including over 70 aircraft operated by VistaJet and Talon Air, as well as over 2,100 jets part of the safety-vetted XO Alliance Fleet. The planes range in size from six-seat turboprops to large VIP airliners that can carry over 100 passengers.

Types of memberships

Let's start with an overview of XO's membership offerings. Unlike competitors NetJets and Sentient, XO continues to take on new customers amid the record demand for private air travel. Additionally, as mentioned, you do not need to be a member to book flights through XO.

Anyone can book private and shared flights on a "buy as you fly" basis, but you'll be subject to a $395 non-member fee on every booking. So, even if you're an infrequent flyer, it'll likely make more sense to sign up for a $595/year Rise membership since it basically pays for itself after two trips.

In an interview with TPG, XO shared that Rise Members book an average of 6.7 trips per year and cited the membership's efficiency and pricing transparency as two major selling points. "Our RISE program is the perfect option for first-time private flyers, and it's a great entry-level opportunity for those looking to experience XO shared charter flights," said Lezlea List, Executive Vice President of Sales XO. "The RISE program provides the benefits of instant booking, the ability to book a seat, start a crowdfunded flight, or charter an entire aircraft with waived service fees."

XO's higher membership levels unlock further benefits like aircraft availability guarantees, complimentary aircraft upgrades and loyalty credit flight rewards. The top two tiers, Signature and Elite, also include perks like complimentary seats on empty legs, guaranteed aircraft recovery at no additional cost and a $250 catering credit per flight leg.

Unfortunately, XO told us that it has no immediate plans to bring back any all-you-can-fly subscriptions, similar to those offered by its former sister brand JetSmarter .

Private charters

XO offers several different ways to fly, but the most obvious are private charters.

You can book private charters operated by XO's dedicated fleet instantly with real-time prices either online or via XO's mobile app — just like ordering an Uber. A really expensive, fancy Uber.

For other flights, you'll receive an estimated price but will need to confirm the booking with a sales advisor. As mentioned, prices are dynamic for all members except for Elite Access members, who have a fixed hourly rate and capped billing. Additionally, non-members are subject to a $395 service fee per flight booking.

Charter flights are available across the globe, and you can even sell extra seats to fellow flyers. The flight is still confirmed regardless of whether others join your flight, but you can potentially earn future flight credits in exchange for the seats sold. The only thing to be aware of is that once you offer seats for sale, you are committing to that date, time and routing.

Shared flights

Shared flights are an increasingly common way to fly private — especially with the plane shortage. In fact, XO shared that October 2021 saw the most shared flights in the company's history, with 90% more flights and 104% more seats booked relative to last year.

As discussed, you can book empty seats on confirmed private flights initiated by members. Or, another option is to book by the seat on a number of XO-initiated shuttle flights.

XO currently offers 16 shuttle flights per week for customers looking to travel between New York Westchester (HPN) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) or West Palm Beach (PBI). The service, much like BLADEone , is also operated by a 16-seat CRJ-200 and with complimentary in-flight meals. These are regularly scheduled flights, so they'll only be canceled for reasons beyond XO's control — not because of a shortage of passengers, for instance.

Seats start at $1,495 one-way (about $1,000 less than Blade's service) but keep in mind that non-members must still pay a $395 surcharge. If you plan on booking a round-trip, you'll come out ahead with the $595-per-year RISE membership.

We asked if XO has any other shuttle routes on the horizon, but XO said that it wants to focus on perfecting its service in this market first before rushing out new routes.

For other shared flights, prices can vary by distance and type of jet. However, to give you an idea, members can book a seat from New York to Los Angeles on a heavy jet for $2,495 — about the same price as a first-class seat on American's three-cabin A321T .

XO shared with us that New York to South Florida is its busiest market for shared flights, followed by New York to Los Angeles. Additionally, New York to Naples, Florida, has shown a strong conversion among private charter to by-the-seat clients.

Crowdfunded flights

If no existing shared flights fit your needs and you're not ready to commit to a private charter, you can propose a crowdfunded flight. This lets you propose an itinerary and see if other people want to join.

Crowdfunded flights are only guaranteed once a designated number of seats are sold. The number of seats required to confirm a flight will increase the closer it gets to the departure date. You can cancel anytime up until a flight is confirmed and, if the minimum number of seats aren't sold, you aren't charged anything. You may guarantee the flight at any time by purchasing the remaining number of seats required yourself.

As with other bookings, you can create crowdfunded flights via XO's website or app. XO controls the pricing, so all passengers pay an equal share.

Empty leg deals

The final way to fly XO is by booking an empty-leg deal . These are highly discounted flights available when an aircraft is scheduled to fly without any passengers.

Empty legs typically only become available at the last minute and are never guaranteed, so you shouldn't plan trips around them. However, if there's one that coincides with your travel plans, you can save a lot of money by flying them. Specifically, you can sometimes save 50% to 75% with empty leg bookings, though the savings tend to be a bit less on more popular routes like New York to South Florida. On some flights, XO even lets you book empty legs by the seat, making them even more accessible to the average traveler.

XO shared with us that to improve reliability; it only sells empty legs on its dedicated fleet — not ones from third parties, which might be less likely to take off.

Bottom line

XO makes booking a private jet flight as simple as requesting a ride. You can instantly book flights from your phone and don't need a pricey membership to do so. Much like pooled ridesharing, its numerous shared flight options make flying private more accessible and help cope with the private jet industry's ongoing demand and supply issues.

Although not required, if you're planning to give XO a try, you'll likely want to start with a Rise membership since it basically pays for itself after just two trips.

Can’t go back to flying commercial!

I never thought I would be able to fly private and always thought there would be a catch whenever I heard about JetSmarter but after a friend flew using JetSmarter, I knew I had to give it a try! Not only was the flight great, but all of the staff were professional and attentive to every detail and need of ours, the aircraft was modern and luxurious, and finding a flight was extremely easy. There are so many flights flying in and out of my area and to areas that I regularly fly to or would fly to for future trips and the prices are extremely affordable. I hate when it is hard to find flights online and this app makes it so easy to search for flights and the prices are displayed right on the app- no need to submit pricing requests or call a company phone number. Two flights flown through JetSmarter and already booking my third for next week!

Need for many more shuttles out of the Atlanta, and Southeastern states!!

This is a great jet shuttle service, and very nice jets compared to other private jet services. The biggest problem I've come to find, are the limited areas of daily shuttles for people living in the Southeastern states, and cities such as Atlanta. How can Atlanta be the the busiest airport in the country, yet Jet Smarter doesn't put near the amount of attention for those living in that area? So there's 2 shuttles out of Atlanta, one to New York, and one to Ft Lauderdale. The southeast has had such a commercial boom in the past 10 years, bringing the largest corporations to the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama! With Boeing, Honda, Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, Polaris, Honda ATV, and Shutterstock!! It's very frustrating to try to put a flight together, but must fly to New York first, one of the flights from Atlanta that Jet Smarter has as a shuttle. Now your left with getting from Charleston to Atlanta, and on the return leg, getting to your home airport from Atlanta?? I also believe there should be more round trip fares, rather than selling one way at fares a time. We'll have to see if they grow, and begin to accommodate those of us living in the southeast? Once in the air, and in the small airports, things run very smoothly! I'm just hoping that they realize the need for members flying out of Atlanta, to many designations? Member

I heard about this app and had my first flight with them, now I’m loyal member! I travel occasionally and plane expenses itself are expensive. I always have to stay up all night and takes me few days to get in luck of finding cheap flights. I tried this app and saved me tons of time and money getting the cheapest flight. It’s super easy to use! You can find all flights you want and book in seconds. Now it’ll be so hard to go back and fly commercial! My flight with them was fantastic and the staff were so welcoming. I couldn’t believe I could afford flying private until this app. Would totally recommend this.

Company History

Previously established in 2006 as XOJET Aviation (Northern California), XO is now centered at Fort Lauderdale , a Florida-based on-demand private jet firm. 

The company provides a full range of flight services, from fixed-price charter and shared flights to customized private jet membership programs and partial ownership of jets. XO has a wide selection of outstanding aircraft powered by their Dedicated Fleet of 180 aircraft and the XO Alliance Fleet’s 2,100+ aircraft.

XOJET was created in 2006 by Paul Touw with Keith Krach as a personal jet charter firm where fliers purchase a specific amount of flying hours for each year, much like the concept of fractional ownership. Three years later, in 2009, TPG Capital purchased XOJET. This is when the airline began to operate fixed-price one-way charters between major US cities, initially between the east and west coasts. Later on, the company included a lot more destinations all over the world.

In 2017, XOJET released select access, a new $50,000 level, and expanded its Elite Access program to include light and mid-size planes as well as membership and monthly payments. All of these changes brought them over 7,000 customers all around the world.

In September 2018, VistaJet ’s parent company, Vista Global, announced that it had signed an agreement to purchase XOJET’s fleet and commercial activities. The same year, the company was sold to Dubai -based Vista Group Holding (VistaJet’s sister firm) by TPG Capital, a prominent private equity investor. 

Vista Global united XOJET with JetSmarter in 2019, renaming the combined company as XO.

In July 2021, Vista Global reported an 82 percent rise in XO deposit members. 

Vista Global (XO’s parent company) has bought a minority stake in Red Wing Aero and Talon Air (top charter operator), also purchasing Apollo Jets (a major private jet charter broker). 

Their purpose was to expand the fleet of light jets, and they are now a part of XO Global.

XO’s objective has always been to become the service provider of choice for the most sophisticated private aviation consumers, including corporations and individuals. 

Since VistaJet’s founding, Thomas Flohr, the company’s founder and chairman, has helped it grow from a European start-up to a worldwide aviation leader, linking every continent. 

Why XO Doesn’t Offer Partial Ownership

Fractional ownership is buying a share of a particular aircraft which entitles you to a certain amount of hours in a specific aircraft type. That being said, since they don’t believe in fractional ownership or traditional jet cards, XO doesn’t offer this, but they do offer alternatives. You can, for example, buy a predetermined number of flying hours to use each year or use one of their other membership options. Let’s see what they are.

XO’s Memberships – What are Your Options?

Let’s look at what XO has to offer in terms of membership programs. 

XO continues to accept new clients despite the high demand for private jet travel. Moreover, you can book a flight with XO even if you are not a member. On a “buy as you fly” basis, anybody may book private and shared flights. However, there is a $395 non-member cost on each booking.

Higher XO membership levels enable additional perks, such as guaranteed aircraft availability, complimentary aircraft upgrades, and loyalty credit flight incentives. Signature and Elite provide extra benefits, such as free seats on empty legs and a $250 catering credit each flight cycle.

Unfortunately, XO has no intentions to bring back any all-you-can-fly memberships in the near future.

Select Access Membership

XO Select Access offers dynamic pricing to private jet charter customers. The monthly membership price is $250, while the minimum deposit is $50,000, which is fully refundable.

• An all-inclusive price that varies (based on peak days, the type of private jet, date of the flights, and arrival and departure destinations).
• There is no administrative fee for deposit payments.
• No service costs.

Elite Access Membership

Elite Access is the company’s fixed-rate program, which requires a $100,000 deposit.

XO’s Elite Access Membership provides guaranteed private jet access at fixed prices and perks for every flight, without typical jet cards or fractional or full jet ownership limitations. You may fly on your schedule and avoid long-term obligations and fines for “under flying” or “over flying” as an Elite Access Member.

Monthly membership costs are $1,000 and a minimum deposit of $100,000 is required, which is fully refundable.

• Fixed hourly costs for three types of jets.
• No de-icing costs.
• Catering credit of $250 is provided for each charter flight leg.

Is there a corporate membership option at XO?

While they don’t have a dedicated “corporate membership,” their premium membership program, Signature Access Membership, is perfect for business travelers. It offers the use of its greatest on-demand services as a sensible, effective option for individuals who need to travel more than 25 hours per year. It’s also fantastic for companies because this membership option offers the opportunity to book tickets on joint flights for unaccompanied non-members.

For Travel and Membership Services, What Forms of Payment Does XO Accept?

XO only accepts bank transfer, ACH, and credit card transactions (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover). They do not accept Apple Pay, PayPal, or bitcoin transactions.

The Primary Service Area

The Primary Service Area (PSA) is a geographic area where your jet of choice is available at all times and you fly with prices that are predetermined, with minimum notice time. 

So, what happens when you fly outside of PSA? There will be some surcharges to your hourly wage once you leave the PSA which include ferry fees (the price for repositioning the jet), the expenses for the crew overnights, and costs like flying crews commercially (if needed). 

XO’s light and mid-size jet cards PSA is regional.

Pricing Structure

Vista Global’s decision to rebrand XOJET and JetSmarter as XO and launch a new website, FlyXO.com, has resulted in some substantial changes for jet-card members. The new XO jet cards offer a unique discount structure for lengthier trips and expand light and medium programs across the country. 

Non-peak call-outs are now extended to 72 hours, up from 24 hours previously. Members can still book flights on peak days, but the price will be dynamic. 

Private Charters and Shared Flights

XO provides various flight options, the most prominent of which are private charters and shared flights.

How to Book a Private Flight

Using their mobile app or website, you can select any certified aircraft on demand and choose the destination and date you wish to fly. “Instant Booking” flights are entirely confirmed and covered by XO’s service guarantee. If, however, you’d like to schedule with an Aviation Advisors , you may do so over the phone or by email. Private flights come with all of the premium features of traditional charters, plus the convenience and speed of the digital booking process, low costs, and flight support.

Whether or not others join your shared flight, with booking a private jet, XO will always confirm your route, but you may be able to receive future flight credits in return for the seats sold. When you sell tickets to other passengers, you are committing to that day, time, and route.

You’ll be given an estimate for other flights but will need to confirm your reservation with a sales representative. Except for Elite Access members, rates are dynamic for other fliers. The rates change based on peak days, the type of private jet, the date of the flight, and arrival and departure destinations. Non-members must also pay a $395 service fee per flight reservation.

How to Book a Shared Flight

You may book shared flights for specific routes throughout the world, just like private travel, and adapt them to your particular needs. 

To reserve a flight, start typing in your chosen itinerary (directly on their website flyxo.com or download their app ) then choose the airports you’d want to use in the area, the date of your departure, and the maximum capacity you need or want to purchase. You can cancel at any time up until the point when the flight is confirmed or 72 hours before departure, whichever comes first. It is no longer possible to cancel a flight once it has been confirmed.

Because of plane scarcity and better affordability, shared flights are becoming a more popular method to travel privately. A crowdfunded trip is a good idea if no current shared flights meet your demands and you’re not ready to book a private charter. Crowdfunded flights allow you to offer an itinerary and see whether others are interested in joining you.

XO can only guarantee flights sponsored via crowdsourcing after selling a certain number of seats. The number of seats necessary to confirm a trip will rise as the departure date approaches. You can cancel before the company confirms the flight, without a charge, if the minimum number of seats is not selling. In this case, you can ensure your spot on the aircraft is by purchasing the remaining number of seats.

You may book crowdfunded flights using XO’s website or app, just like any other booking. XO sets the prices, so all passengers pay the same amount.

Is a Shared Flight Guaranteed?

The airplane is always confirmed after you have purchased the minimum seat required. When you reach the required number of seats, the booking screen will change color. If you want to book fewer seats than the minimum, organizing a shared flight is risk-free since the company only charges you after the required seat reservations are fulfilled. If you want to confirm the flight, you may reserve all seats or wait for others to fill them. In any case, XO will only guarantee the route after the needed minimal level amount of seats is full.

Empty Leg Deals

The final and most affordable option for flying with XO is to schedule an empty-leg flight. When XO is expecting an aircraft to travel without any passengers, they offer these trips at a significant discount.

That being said, keep in mind that empty leg flights usually become available last minute and are never guaranteed. If there is one that fits with your vacation plans, though, flying this way will save you a lot of money. Empty leg reservations, in particular, can save you between 50% and 75% of the original price.

Flying With a Shared Private Jet

For each seat on a shared aircraft, the passenger can bring one piece of baggage of up to 50 pounds which must be placed in the luggage compartment. The passenger can also bring one personal item such as a briefcase, handbag, or rucksack (must be stored under the seat).

The papers are valid one year from being issued to the intended departure date and must be submitted 48 hours before a flight. Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
