Four teenage girls in a clothing store, trying on things, kidding around, giggling. Girls of four different sizes and shapes. What makes them all want to try on the same pair of pre-owned jeans? And why are the jeans a perfect fit all four times? It's the summer before the girls begin their senior year in high school, and all four have big summer plans.

Because the jeans magically fit them all, and perhaps because they all saw " Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood ," they come up with a plan: Each girl will wear the jeans for a week and then FedEx them to the next on the list.

Along with the solemn vow to forward the jeans on schedule comes a list of rules which must not be violated, of which the most crucial is that the girls must never let anyone else remove the jeans from their bodies. There is, however, a loophole: They can take them off themselves. Here we have a premise that could easily inspire a teenage comedy of comprehensive badness, but "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is always sweet and sometimes surprisingly touching, as the jeans accompany each girl on a key step of her journey to adulthood.

The movie, like " Mystic Pizza " (1988), assembles a group of talented young actresses who have already done good work separately and now participate in a kind of showcase. America Ferrera (whose " Real Women Have Curves " remains one of the best recent coming-of-age films) plays Carmen, who lives with her Puerto Rican mother and is thrilled to be spending the summer with her absentee non-Puerto Rican father. Alexis Bledel , who struck entirely different notes in " Sin City ," is Lena, off to visit her grandparents and other relatives on a Greek island. Blake Lively plays Bridget, who attends a soccer camp in Mexico and falls in love with one of the hunky young counselors. And Amber Tamblyn (of "Joan of Arcadia") is Tibby, the one with the sardonic angle on life, who wants to be a filmmaker and takes a low-paying job for the summer at a suburban megastore where she plans to shoot a video documentary about life and work.

The stories of the four girls comes, I learn, from a novel by Ann Brashares , who has written two more in the series. The usefulness of her four-story structure is that none of the stories overstays its welcome, and the four girls aren't trapped in the same dumb suburban teenage romantic plot. They live, and they learn.

Carmen has idealized her father, Al ( Bradley Whitford ), even though he dumped her mother ( Rachel Ticotin ) years earlier. She values her Puerto Rican roots and discovers, with a shock, that her dad is planning marriage with a WASP named Lydia ( Nancy Travis ), who comes equipped with children and a suburban home that her father seems to desire as much as his new bride. Is he ashamed of his golden-skinned daughter whose jeans show off a healthy and rounded but technically overweight body?

Tibby has perhaps been watching IFC too much and possibly envisions herself at Sundance as she heads off to the Wal-Mart clone with her video camera. She gets a young assistant named Bailey ( Jenna Boyd ) who is a good soul, open and warm-hearted, and with a secret that Tibby discovers one day when Bailey passes out right there on the floor of a store corridor. Tibby's tendency was to look at everything through a lens, objectively; Bailey removes the lens cap on her heart.

In Greece, Lena finds her family living a salt-of-the-earth existence in what are surely outtakes from a tourism commercial. If there really is an island this sun-drenched, with a village this filled with white stucco and deep shade, populated by people who are this jolly and loving and who throw a feast on a moment's notice, then I don't know why I'm not there instead of here. Lena's Greek relatives are, however, extremely protective of her chastity, which may exist primarily in their dreams, and she gets a crush on a local teen god.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, Bridget and the counselor know they are violating unbreakable rules by even spending private time together, but Bridget sets her sights on the guy and stages a campaign of attraction and seduction that is more or less irresistible.

The role played by the jeans in all of these stories is, it must be said, more as a witness than as a participant, sometimes from a vantage point draped over a chair near a bed. But no, the PG-rated movie isn't overloaded with sex, and its values are in the right place.

The emotional candy that sustains this “Sisterhood” is too artificially sweetened to be filling, unless you really believe that one sentimental size fits all.

It owes its substance to Brashares' eye and ear for teen psychology and to the solid performances by the four leads.

What saves the film is the way the problems of the four friends are handled, in mature and realistic ways. This makes The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants a welcome respite from the summer grind of big explosions and actors with even bigger egos.

Schmaltz is delivered with such sincerity by The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that only the most jaded viewer wouldn't be moved. Usually that's me. Yet, there's something irresistible about Ken Kwapis' film.

A bounty of sympathetic characters, realistic writing and flawless performances, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants has the smarts and scenery to appeal to other age groups besides its target.

It’s all mostly warm and fuzzy until the film descends into multiple, tearjerking moments and trite resolutions. The performances are fine but after Mean Girls you may find this too sticky and sweet.

Under Ken Kwapis' direction, each of the four young actresses delivers a performance that's modestly affecting, amusing and believable. And like the magical pants, the film surprisingly fits all sorts of viewers.

Each of them undergoes her own emotional catharsis, sympathy for which will depend on your tolerance for self-absorbed teen maundering and group hugs.

This has the feeling of an authentic story, enriched by strong performances from a young cast and made with an unusual respect for its characters.

Anyone in the target demographic will do a lot of sniffling during the film, and a lot of hugging her friends afterwards.

The rare movie that depicts young women realistically: excited, confused, impetuous and determined as they try to figure out who they are.

Amber Tamblyn Explains Why a Third 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' Movie Is 'Complicated'

Amber Tamblyn recently revealed the challenges of the project.

Making  The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ' third installment isn't an easy feat. During an interview on  SiriusXM's Pop Culture Spotlight with Jessica Shaw , Amber Tamblyn revealed what's causing the delay on the project, which was pitched back in 2018.

The franchise's first film debuted in 2005 and was followed by a sequel three years later. Both movies starred Tamblyn,  Blake Lively , Alexis Bledel and America Ferrera  as four best friends.

"There's a lot going on with the project," Tamblyn said. "We've been working on it for, I don't know, it feels like a decade at this point. My hope is that it'll get made at some point."

"It's very complicated for a lot of reasons, some of which include just the fact that between the four of us, we all have, like, 870 children," she joked.

The four friends actually have seven -- almost eight! -- children between them. Tamblyn is mom to Marlow, 5; Lively, who is pregnant , has Betty, 3, Inez, 6, and James, 7; Bledel has a 7-year-old son; Ferrara is mom to Lucia, 2, and Sebastian, 4.

"It's hard. Family makes it hard," Tamblyn said of making the movie. "Life makes it hard."

Despite the difficulties they're facing in getting the project made, Tamblyn noted, "I know that that is a great hope for all four of us, is to be able to work together again."

"To me, it feels like the ultimate grift where I'm like, 'Wait a minute, we're gonna get paid to hang out when we do that in real life anyway? Cool. I'm in,'" she said.

Lively got fans' hopes up in 2018, when she told ET that a third movie "could really happen." Shortly thereafter, Bledel revealed on  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon  that she and her co-stars had "just pitched the third movie."

"I really hope [we can do it]," she said. "I would love it. It would be the best thing."

The next year, Ferrera told ET that talk of the third movie "is a conversation that's still at play."

"Fingers crossed that something comes to fruition with that, but it's been a vision and a dream of ours for a while now," she said. "We're all moms now. We've all got a lot going on, but we've got a beautiful friendship and we love these movies and we love this story and our friendship together [and] the friendship of these girls. So, we're sticking with it and we'll see what happens."

'Girlhood' (2014)

'Never Rarely Sometimes Always' (2020)

Eliza Hittman 's thought-provoking and soul-shattering feature sees a pair of inseparable teenage best friends ( Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder ) from rural Pennsylvania travel to New York City to seek out medical help after one of them unexpectedly and unintentionally falls pregnant and is confronted by conservative legislation. When it was released in 2020, Never Rarely Sometimes Always received widespread attention from critics.

In addition to Flanigan's incredible performance and the well-crafted screenplay it features, Never Rarely Sometimes Always is a great film because of the themes it tackles; not only does Hittman's affecting feature shed light on abortion and the emotional toll it takes on women, but also highlights the bond that connects two young women . Essentially, it is a movie about sisterhood and womanhood, focusing on the comfort that comes from feeling understood — especially by other women.

'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' (1953)

With the incredibly talented Marilyn Monroe and her dear friend Jane Russell at its center, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a comedy musical that follows showgirls Lorelai and Dorothy as they make their way to Paris while pursued by a private detective and an enamored old man (among other admirers).

Although its comedic elements and great musical numbers are iconic — Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend , for one, endures a beloved song today — Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is much more than its cheeky social satire, which captures how the two protagonists subside male objectification (though, for various reasons, it is not to be labeled as a feminist film per se). Cook , Leslie Hayman , Hannah Hall , and Chelse Swain , who are sheltered by their religious parents and the subject of the desire of a group of male friends.

Coppola has always been renowned for the accurate way she portrays girlhood in film, and this 1999 film is no exception. Although not everyone's cup of tea given the sensitive topics it deals with — including the almost inevitable loneliness that comes with being a girl at such an age — The Virgin Suicides would not exist if it weren't for its depiction of sisterhood and the bond that connects its central characters.

'Mustang' (2015)

'One Sings, the Other Doesn't' (1977)

Man Tries to Board Flight with Snakes in His Pants at Miami Airport

The snakes were discovered by Transportation Security Administration officials on Friday, April 26

A plane flying out of Miami International Airport almost had a group of slithery travelers onboard.

Transportation Security Administration officials announced on X , formerly known as Twitter, that a bag of snakes was found hidden in a passenger's pants at a checkpoint on Friday, April 26.

The passenger, identified as a man by WBBH-TV , hid the snakes in a small green camo bag. TSA officials gave a glimpse of the bag through three different photos included in the post.

One of the photos showed two pink snakes crawling around the exterior of the bag with white packaging material around them.

According to the announcement, officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Miami-Dade Police Department were called to the scene, and the snakes were turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

WFTV reported that the passenger was attempting to go on an international flight, and was denied boarding after the snakes were found. PEOPLE has reached out to the Miami-Dade Police Department for comment.

The U.S. Department of Transportation explains on its website that "federal and state governments impose restrictions on transporting live animals. In addition, each airline establishes its own company policy for the proper handling of the animals they transport."

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises pet owners to purchase flights with fewer connections or layovers, allowing a smoother travel experience.

"Pick departure and arrival times to avoid extreme heat or cold. For example, planning a nighttime arrival to a hot destination may be better for your pet," the CDC adds on its website .

In a previous conversation with PEOPLE, Dr. Sarah Nold, an on-staff veterinarian for  Trupanion , advised that the safest way to fly with pets is to be "prepared for any situation."

"Make sure your carrier is the proper size for your pet and durable. Call the airline to determine if your carrier/pet is approved for riding in the cabin or if they will have to go in cargo," continued Nold. "Keep in mind there may be maximum weight and minimum age requirements for traveling, these are usually enforced for the safety of your pet."
