Trek BB90 Bearing Kit Installation

This guide explains how the Hambini Trek BB90 Bearing Kit works and how to install it.

How this kit works

Trek BB90 consists of a bottom bracket containing a 90mm wide shell with apertures for a 37mm 6805 type bearing. Originally Trek used MR2437 bearings which have a 24mm bore, 37mm width and 7mm thickness. Subsequently, they moved to a standard 6805 bearing which has a 25mm bore, 37mm width and 7mm thickness.

Trek bottom brackets are typically at the loose end of the tolerance spectrum and often exceed this. Bearings are also made to a tolerance. The Hambini kit selects bearings that are the top end of the tolerance band to try to ensure a sufficiently good fit to stop creaking.

For example, an Enduro bearing with 36.97mm outside diameter may give creaking and rotate within the housing whilst a slightly larger NSK/FAG/NTN bearing at 36.99mm will not.

There are inevitably some limitations, if the bike has been ridden with a spinning bearing for an extended period, the bottom bracket may have fretted to the point that no bearing will work. In this scenario, a Hambini Kit would not overcome this problem. The bottom bracket would require relining.

Equipment required

  • Hambini BB90 Kit
  • Cleaning Cloths
  • Cleaning Spray
  • Loctite 7649 Activator or equivalent
  • Loctite 641 Medium Strength Retaining compound or equivalent

Installation Procedure

  • By default, the delrin top hats are installed in the bearings for transit purposes, this is to prevent them from being damaged. These need to be removed from the bearings prior to installation.
  • Ensure the Trek Frame is completely clean of any grease, contaminants and dust. A fast acting industrial cleaner is recommended for this purpose.
  • Spray on Loctite 7649 Activator, wipe off any excess from around the frame and leave it to dry for 24 hours.
  • The outer race of the bearings needs to be cleaned with a cloth, do not use degreaser.
  • Spray the frame with Loctite 7649 activator and leave it until it evaporates (usually 5-15 minutes)
  • Apply a liberal coating of Loctite 641 retaining compound to the bottom bracket shell
  • Press the bearings into the bottom bracket shell. The bearings are 6805, a 6805 press will be required.
  • Wipe off any excess retaining compound. Do not use degreaser
  • Leave the frame for 48 hours.
  • Press the delrin top hats into the bearings
  • Reinstall the crankset

Fitting a Token Ninja Trek BB90 Bottom Bracket

If you’re looking for information on fitting the Token Ninja alternative to the Trek BB90 bottom bracket… well you’ve come to the right place.

To be honest, the information is best delivered in visual form, so here is my YouTube video:

Some salient points:

  • I decided to replace the standard Trek press-fit BB90 bearings because I was sick of them going rusty and squeaky
  • I have replaced the official bearings before – here’s the link to my post on removing and installing new BB90 bearings (on a Trek Domane – but applies to other bikes)
  • The Token Ninja is a sort of ‘screw together’ bottom bracket, rather than press-fit or threaded.
  • You need the dedicated Token tool (specific to this model of bottom bracket) to fit it. This tool is a pain to get hold of. I’ve bought two of them now (I helped a Canadian viewer of my YouTube channel out by sending him my first one) – both times from the Token distributor based in Poland (I’m in the UK).
  • Getting the press-fit BB90 bearings out of the bike is a pain (watch the video). Fitting the new Token Ninja bottom bracket is a breeze. It’s harder to get the fitting tool than it is to install the bottom bracket.
  • I’ve had the Token Ninja BB90 fitted for well over 12 months now and it’s still working well (though in recent months, this bike has been installed on my Wahoo KICKR indoor trainer ). No creaks and I have no concerns. At some point soon, I’ll get the bike in the stand and take a proper look at it.

Hi Monty Re the Token Ninja BB90 solution – it is a great idea. Have you seen that you can get a replacement bearing so that you can replace the bearing with the sleeve left in the bike? It is available at https://sklep.token-polska.pl/

I have a pair of bearings & a Wheels Mfg puller to remove the old bearings safely. However, the bearing is an odd size (OD 34mm) & shape. Consequently, I don’t have a suitable drift to press the new bearing in. Any ideas??

I just replace it same method you clip here by a shop who a prepare part and important mechanic tool (ninja) its so smooth and solve my left side of BB creaking sound and over loosed.

Sorry eak. What you’ve got say is important but your comments appear to be somewhat unclear.

Confused by bottom brackets? Wondering what the ‘BB’ in BB90 stands for? Let alone the ‘90’… Well, don’t despair. I’ll be explaining what this essential bike component does, why the BB90 is unusual, and what you can do about common issues that can develop with them. Let’s take a look.

What does a bottom bracket do?

The bottom bracket is one of the most important components in a bicycle, yet it’s often overlooked. When you’re shopping for a new road bike you might be concerned with overall bike weight or gear ratios. For a new mountain bike, it might be the travel of the suspension or the gnarliness of the tires. And, for an electric bike, it could be the torque and range that the battery and motor deliver.

But, bottom brackets? They’ll be tucked right at the bottom of the spec list and are unlikely to be a factor in most purchases.

It’s easy to forget about the bottom bracket, but it plays an integral role in your riding experience and, when it goes wrong, it can really ruin your day . So, let’s break it down: what exactly is a bottom bracket, and what does it do?

A bottom bracket ( often referred to as a ‘BB’ ) is a small part of the bike that holds the crank arms in place and attaches them to the frame. It’s located at the bottom of the bike between the two chainrings, and it consists of two bearings (called cups) that are pressed into the frame through the bottom bracket shell. The bearings allow the crank arms to spin freely, which is crucial for smooth friction-free pedaling. A BB is part of a bike’s groupset .

The bottom bracket also determines the size of your crankset. Different sizes are available and they’re measured in millimeters (mm).

For most riders, the size of the bottom bracket isn’t something they need to worry about—they simply purchase a bike with the correct size already installed. However, if you’re planning on upgrading your crankset, you’ll need to consider the size of your bottom bracket.

Aside from these considerations, there are a few other aspects to keep in mind when selecting a bottom bracket. One is bearing type: sealed bearings are preferred because they are low-maintenance and provide smoother rotation than unsealed bearings. The other is spindle diameter—the part of the bottom bracket that your pedal crank arms attach to. The two spindle diameters most commonly used today are 24mm (used on Shimano cranksets) and 30mm (used on SRAM cranksets).

Bottom brackets are also available in different configurations and materials. For example, some are threaded into the frame, while others press-fit into it. The most common materials for bottom brackets include aluminum alloy, steel, and titanium. Each material has its own unique qualities and benefits, so it’s important to choose one that fits your riding style and budget.

What is the BB90 bottom bracket?

Intriguingly, the BB90 isn’t really a bottom bracket at all. Let me explain.

A ‘typical’ bottom bracket has a cylindrical body that takes up the entire inner space of the bottom bracket shell. It might have a spindle fitted allowing crank arms to be attached, or have a slot through the center allowing for a spindle to be pushed through – an example of this type is shown below.

trek bb90 bearing replacement

In contrast, the BB90 ‘bottom bracket’ is really only the two bearing cups that you’d normally find at each end of a standard bottom bracket.

This is a press-fit style of bottom bracket, where the bearing cups push into recessed fittings on each end of the bottom bracket shell on a bike. You can see what the BB90 setup looks like in the diagram below.

close-up view of the BB90

Let’s look at the dimensions now.

Remember we talked about the ‘90’ in BB90? Well, this refers to the length of the BB shell cylinder, which should either be 90.5mm (on road bikes) or 95mm (on mountain bikes ).

Each of the two bearing cups in the BB90 has an outer diameter of 37mm – corresponding to the inner diameter of the BB shell. They also have an inner diameter of 24mm to accept the 24mm spindle cranks that they are designed to be used with.

Which bike manufacturers use BB90 bottom brackets?

There is really only one bike manufacturer that uses BB90 and that’s Trek Bikes . BB90 is their standard for most of their road bikes and mountain bikes. These will have a BB shell that is designed to accept this style of bottom bracket.

BB90 Bottom Bracket problems

BB90 is a clever bit of design as it allows for a reduction in bike weight (through doing away with the bottom bracket ‘body’ that normally goes between the bearing cups).

But, it’s not without its problems. The chief problem that many riders complain about is a creaking noise as the cranks rotate. Whilst not necessarily a loud noise, it’s enough to set the teeth on edge of both the rider and the rest of the pack.

The most common attempt at resolving this issue is with liberal application of Loctite . Sadly, this is unlikely to give anything more than temporary relief.

eliminate a creaking bb90 with this alternative bottom bracket

A better solution is to replace the two BB90 bearing cups with what looks like a standard bottom bracket. This design gives a solid threaded-together casing that holds the bearing cups snugly in position, allowing them to spin smoothly and quietly.

BB90 bottom bracket replacement

If you’re comfortable with tricky bike repairs , then either replace the bearings, or (my preference) use a BB90-compatible thread-together bottom bracket (which is more akin to a ‘standard’ bottom bracket in that it goes all the way through from one side of the BB shell to the other holding the bearing cups in each end, and the 24mm spindle slots through the middle) – see above.

Replacement of bottom brackets is really a job best left to the pros at your local bike shop. They have the specialist tools to do it, and they’re replacing them day-in and day-out. That said, if you’re handy with complex bike repairs and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, then take a look at the details in the video below:

What’s the future of BB90 bottom brackets?

Whilst these can be a weight saver, due to the elimination of the overall bottom bracket ‘body’, the creaking problems that many riders experience with BB90 setups mean that these aren’t universally adored. This may be one of the reasons why there are signs that Trek may be looking to shift gradually away from the BB90 to a different standard: PF92/BB92.

Watch this space to see what happens.

Calnago wrote: That’s a pretty good video overall. I’ve described that exact process before but your trek will be new so just use a good amount of grease in the shell. Trek’s BB90 is a slip fit, not a “press”, or “interference” fit. The bearings can often be pushed in by hand, but use a proper press, unless Campy, to ensure the bearings get fully seated in their bores. I think the vast majority of BB90 issues that occur are because of installation issues and the fact that, if the bearings aren’t fully seated, AND the right amount of preload isn’t used, then the whole thing is loose and the bearings can just fret away at the shell, eventually causing it to go out of round and creak. This is particularly true for Shimano installs where with BB90 you end up with essentially two slipfit surfaces, the inner bearing race on the spindle and the outer bearing race in the BB90 shell. Using Loctite, either 609 if the fit is still pretty good, or loctite 638 (much thicker) if the fit is really loose should be a last resort and certainly not needed when new. Also, you won’t hear any of that “creaking” when pressing in new greased bearings. That lack of noise by itself does not mean it’s too loose on its own, which is something you might take away from that video. You’re only going to hear that “cracking” sound when pressing bearings in if you’re using the retaining compound on a squeaky clean bearing bore. And definitely use the primer as it won’t set up properly on carbon (inactive) without it. Install it right, with grease, and you should be just fine. After you ride it, check to make sure the crank is spinning freely but that there is zero lateral play. It’s quite easy to not get the preload right with a Shimano setup on BB90. Just because the little clip drops into its slot on the crank doesn’t mean it’s as far as it needs to go. I always tighten it enough so that I can feel the crank start to bind a bit when you turn it, then I know I’m there, and back it off a teensy bit. But that kit that BB Infinite is selling looks to be a good product for those that have a problematic worn BB90 install. I didn’t know they made one. I guess it comes with a couple bearings and a small amount of retaining compound, which would be good for a home user since even a small container of the retaining compound can be quite expensive and way more than you’ll ever need.

Module Bearing Replacement Procedure

Module Bearing Replacement Procedure

December 27, 2022

Don't pull the module out just to service or replace bearings. If all you need to do is service the bearings in your BBInfinite module, or in your Trek BB90 bottom bracket, check this out: BB8Infinite Bearing Maintenance

Product Service Section: What maintenance does a BBInfinite Module require? Regular maintenance of bearings in bottom brackets, wheels, and headsets is necessary due to exposure to environmental contamination during use. We recommend cleaning and re-greasing bearings every 3,000 miles to keep them running in top form. If you ride in extreme conditions, such as a soupy cyclocross race or a brutal, rainy, 24hr MTB event, we recommend servicing immediately post race. This applies to all bearings, not just those from us. We recommend Kluber IsoFlex Topas NB52 for all bearings sold by us. You can get some right here. Are the bearings serviceable or do I need a new module when they wear out? Because BBInfinite Modules are not disposable and last a lifetime, the bearings are easily replaced while the module is installed in the bike. It's fast and easy with common hand tools and an appropriate bearing press. Watch the BBInfinite Module Bearing Service video all the way through before starting your own installation. Do ceramic bearings in a BBInfinite Bottom Bracket Module require regular maintenance?? Regular maintenance of bearings in bottom brackets, wheels, and headsets is necessary due to exposure to environmental contamination during use. We recommend cleaning and re-greasing bearings every 3,000 miles to keep them running in top form. If you ride in extreme conditions, such as a soupy cyclocross race or a brutal, rainy, 24hr MTB event, we recommend servicing immediately post race. This applies to all bearings, not just those from us. We recommend Kluber IsoFlex Topas NB52 for all bearings sold by us. You can get some right here. Which type of bottom bracket module do I need?? Email us at [email protected] and let know the bicycle frame type (e.g. road), frame manufacturer, frame model and model year, and crank type (manufacturer and model), and with this information we'll reply with a link directly to the product you need. Attach a few pictures showing the crank and bottom bracket area clearly, and one of the entire bicycle to aid us in our quest to get you on the right track. Creaking Bottom Bracket Section My bottom bracket is creaking and I've tried everything to fix it. How does a BBInfinite Bottom Bracket module fix a creaking problem? We fit creaking bottom brackets with proper engineering and precision machining. Watch this brief BBInfinite primer PressFit Perfection to get the lowdown on how we do it while all others fail. I heard that PressFit bikes just creak. Is that true? No, that is completely false information. PressFit bottom brackets offer the potential for the highest level performance possible, thanks to BBInfinite. There is no reason for your PressFit bike to creak, crunch, crack, or make any noises at all. Unless the frame is cracked the bike will be quiet. Can a creaking and popping bottom bracket damage my frame? Yes, it can. A creaking bottom bracket means there's movement between the bb and the frame. The more a bicycle bottom bracket creaks the more it is moving. This movement over time can wallow out the frame bottom brackets shell openings, enlarging them and elongating them, making them more susceptible to creaking and making it impossible to fit new bottom brackets. Don't freak out, it takes a long time. We've seen only a handful of bikes go in the junk heap due to bottom bracket shell ovalization. Install a BBInfinite module to save your frame, and your sanity.

General Bottom Bracket Information Section: How much do the modules weigh? Each module model has its weight published under the product description. Go to the BBInfinite bottom bracket page for the type of bottom bracket you desire and you'll find a series of tabs in the product description area. The "info" tab is open already. The last tab "specifications" is where you'll find the product weight along with it's external dimensions. Do all BBInfinite Modules have bushings in the middle? No. Only modules designed for a 30mm spindle require a bushing due to variances in 30mm crank set design and "set up" from one manufacturer to another. These inconsistencies are mostly in the area of preload adjustment methods that put too much side load on the bearings. These over-preloading situations require the use of a bushing between the inner races of each bearing to ensure proper performance. Shimano DirectFit and Campagnolo DirectFit models do not need a bushing. GXP modules have a short bushing that reduces the bearing diameter on one side, but it is not a full length version found on BBInfinite 30mm crank spindle models.. bracket tools.

Use a drift and a hammer to walk the bearing out in an alternating pattern on modules featuring a bushing between the bearings simply push the bushing out of the way to gain access to the race offset blows to correct alignment as the bearing emerges use White Lightning clean streak or denatured alcohol to thoroughly degrease the module bore continue cleaning until the paper towel comes back spotless the same goes for the bearings oil and grease are the enemy of retaining compounds a trace amount will inhibit adhesion and prevent curing apply a small amount of Vibratite to the outside of the bearing using a q-tip or a clean oil-free gloved finger distribute the Vibratite across the circumference of the bearings start the bearing squarely in the bore if your module features a bushing between the bearings reinsert it before setting bearings in place install the press according to tool manufacturer's instructions ensure that the press is properly setup and the bearing is straight in the bore before commencing if the bearing becomes cocked. Stop pressing, remove and reinsert bearing before recommencing when the bearing is seated the operation is complete clean off excess fiber tight and install the crank set according to manufacturer's instructions.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

trek bb90 bearing replacement

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

trek bb90 bearing replacement

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
