UB40 in the U.S.S.R.

By Michael Benson

Michael Benson

I t’s Wednesday evening, and Robin Campbell has just told the 12,000 people packed into Moscow’s Luzhniki Arena that he isn’t going to introduce the members of UB40 tonight. “I’m going to say instead,” he tells the audience, “that I find it an amazing thing that such a big, strong country as this one is so afraid of a few people having a good time.”

Soviet MC Alexander Voronkoff, also onstage, smiles. “Robin would like you to know,” he translates, “that in this big country of ours we’re having a good time.”

Welcome to UB40’s Soviet tour.

R ewind to day one: Monday, October 6th, Leningrad. Twenty-year-old Helen Sorokoletova, a student of English at Leningrad University, is sitting in the fourth row of the sold-out 8500-seat Jubileini (“Jubilee”) Arena. In front of her, a large stage is flanked by two red banners that say UB40 CCCP in black letters. Taped reggae booms from stacks of speakers.

“I always hoped that British groups would come to our town sometime,” she says. “It was only a hope, but I was optimistic. I think these groups will come to us now. Such events make me believe that everything will be better and better between countries. I think that political leaders will understand each other one day.”

The house lights dim, and MC Voronkoff, a balding, rotund man, appears onstage and begins talking. He says that UB40 is a progressive group, that the band members stood in dole lines in their native Birmingham and then named themselves after a British unemployment form. He says that this is the first socialist country the group has played in and that the youth in Western countries understand UB40’s songs especially well because they deal with the themes of drugs, alcohol and unemployment. The band just completed a major U.S. tour, says Voronkoff, and some of their songs, he claims, were not so well received — such as “Rat in Mi Kitchen,” the title cut from UB40’s new album, which he describes as an antiwar song.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Voronkoff disappears. The eight-member band and four auxiliary musicians file onstage and waste no time kicking into a seamless reggae groove, pumping out “All I Want to Do,” a song from Rat in the Kitchen . Lead vocalist Ali Campbell wears a black shirt with UB40 CCCP printed on it in white letters. Across the stage, his brother Robin squints into the spotlight and plays guitar. Astro Wilson skanks in place, dreadlocks flying. Behind the stage, the names of the songs, translated into Russian, are projected on a screen.

After a rousing fifteen minutes of UB40’s customized reggae — music born in Trench Town, Jamaica, but raised in Birmingham, England — Robin Campbell approaches the mike. Voronkoff appears again. “That was a song called ‘Watchdogs,’ ” says Campbell. “It’s about the perils of censorship and the people who think they are watching over us for our own good.”

“That was a song about censorship in capitalist countries,” says Voronkoff.

“We’d love to see you dancing,” says Campbell.

“The band likes movement,” says Voronkoff.

Leaving the concert after twelve songs and three encores, Helen Sorokoletova is smiling. “It’s the best concert I’ve seen on this stage,” she says. “I hope they come back.”

L ocated just off Red Square, the Rossiya Hotel is the biggest hotel in Europe. To enter any one of its four main entrances is to risk hours of wandering through dimly lit corridors and down gray marble steps, past the occasional small desk with a row of hanging keys and an attendant with no clue as to what room is where.

Robin Campbell is seated in one of many dining halls along the way. He is quietly fuming. “There’d have to be some pretty strong persuasion to make me come back here,” he says. When the members of UB40 accepted an offer to tour the Soviet Union, Campbell says, they weren’t quite sure what they were getting into.

They did know it would be one of the first big tours of the country by a major band from the West, with six gigs in Leningrad, six in Moscow. It would also be the first time musicians had brought their own equipment into the Soviet Union: three trucks full of sound and lighting gear, as well as a mobile studio, all of it manned by an entourage of fifty-two people. They would lose money, the band members reasoned — some $75,000 — but they would make a portion of that back from the eventual live album and from the concert film, to be directed by UB40 sax man Brian Travers. Besides, it would be a Historic Event.

GOP Rep. Turner: Republicans Have 'Uttered' Russian Propaganda 'on the House Floor'

Russia announces national day of mourning following terror attack at moscow concert hall, at least 133 dead in attack at concert hall outside moscow.

But now, after six concerts in Leningrad and three in Moscow, Campbell’s temper is frayed. The shows have been flooded with walkie-talkie-equipped security men wearing red armbands. Dancing has been effectively quelled for most of the Moscow gigs and half of the Leningrad ones. And the MC, whom the band hadn’t wanted in the first place, is twisting Campbell’s words when he translates them to the audience.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” says Campbell. “We have to have a four-hour argument before every show just to keep the security at a reasonable level of ruthlessness.”

It hasn’t all been bad. A record deal was made with Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga, the Soviet licensing organization, to distribute Soviet-made pressings of Rat in the Kitchen throughout the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. One-third of the proceeds from the deal would be donated to the Chernobyl fund to help victims of the nuclear disaster.

And UB40 did tear the roof off the hall at a few of the Leningrad concerts. On Wednesday night, says Campbell, “almost everybody was up. The security was trying to stop everybody, but it was pure weight of numbers pushing through.

“At the end,” he continues, “there was a rank of about twenty-four soldiers that were all dancing to the music. And their officer came up and was hitting them, going, ‘Stop it, stop it.’ We could all see it; it was brilliant . We said, ‘Yeah, we’ve got their fucking Red Army dancing!’ ”

Ub40 cccp: rare 1986 tv documentary charts band's breakthrough soviet tour.

ub40 tour 1986

From Monday October 6th through Sunday Oct 19, 1986, UB40 performed six concerts in Lennigrad's 8,500 seat Iubileini Sports Arena and six concerts in Moscow's 12,000 seat Luzhniki Arena. UB40 were eight working class musicians from the industrial city of Birmingham who meted out harsh words for Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, and seemed like the perfect cross between pop and politics. What Soviet officials did not expect was that UB40 would be as outspoken and uncompromising in Moscow as they were in England and America. In contrast to previous Western performers including Cliff Richard in 1976, Boney M in 1978, and Elton John in 1979, UB40 refused to enter into any compromises with their music or performance.
The Soviets did their best to temper the music and words issuing from the UB40 stage. When guitarist Robin Campbell expressed dismay that "such a big, strong country as this one is so afraid of a few people having a good time" following a performance of the song "Watchdogs" Campbell told the audience, "That was a song called Watchdogs, It's about the perils of censorship and the people who think they are watching over us for our own good." Translating Campbell's commentary for the Soviet audience, the MC explained "That was a song about censorship in Capitalist Countries." When Campbell tried to bring the crowd to their feet telling them "We'd love to see you dancing," The MC told the audience "The Band likes movement."  Dancing, not lyrics became the major point of contention during the UB40 Tour.  The local promoter Gosconcert, which forbade dancing at concerts, packed the arenas with security forces to keep fans under control. "We have a four hour argument before every show" Campbell complained, " Just to keep security at reasonable level of ruthlessness".
On Thursday October 16th, Campbell tired of the harassment of fans trying to dance, stopped the band. "You with the red armband" he yelled, gesturing towards a security man in the crowd -- "People are allowed to dance. Stop forcing them to sit down." As a spotlight from the stage singled out the security man who timidly withdrew the audience began to cheer. Despite the frustrations of the band and the harassment of the audiences, Soviet rock fans viewed the UB40 tour as a victory. A western band singing about censorship, decrying Police brutality and demanding the right for rock fans to dance, had delivered their message before tens of thousands of fans in Leningrad and Moscow. The change of mood in the Soviet establishment seemed confirmed when shortly after the UB40 concerts, Boris Grebenshehikov, who performed an increasing number engagements, was allowed to hold six sell out concerts in Leningrads Iubileni sports arena.
"One gray October afternoon 20 years ago I got home from school to find my mother sitting by our old radio in the kitchen crying her eyes out… My first thought was that I missed the news that morning, and maybe Gorbachev had died? “What’s the matter, mum?” I asked. It turned out that she had been listening to a radio program about a group of eight unemployed musicians from England that came to Leningrad to perform. “They had such hard childhood” she kept saying, still sobbing… And THAT’S how I found out that UB40 were in town.
Perestroika was in it’s third year, the country was becoming more open, the eventual collapse of the whole system was only 3 years away, but old habits die slow. In their effort to promote the band in the Soviet Union, the authorities made the emphasis on the band’s political and social “struggle” against capitalism in general and Margaret Thatcher in particular. The first gig in Leningrad. There’s a black-and-while UB40 sign over a red background. This anarchist tri-color probably represented much better what UB40 were about than what Goskontsert people had in mind: a group of unemployed musicians who would be embracing Gorbachev-enhanced socialism with open arms.
Reggae as a music genre had not been widely known in Russia. Some might know the name Bob Marley, but nobody really knew any history of the music, anything about its roots, or religious or social significance.
UB40 were the first ever reggae band to ever perform in Russia. They were also the first Western band to ever perform there. I’m sure it was quite a culture shock for the band who had just flown from sunny Los Angeles and into a dreary “Russian winter”. But… we loved them, we loved them, we loved them, and couldn’t get enough of them!
I recently asked my friend Yuri who is the bass-guitarist of the first ever Russian reggae band, what he remembers the most about those Moscow gigs. “The sound”, he said right away. “I’d never heard anything like that before in my life”. The sound was overwhelming; I remember that I was completely blown away by the brass section. That was also the first time I realized how important percussion is.”

ub40 tour 1986

In the fall of 1986 I traveled from Moscow to Leningrad to visit my friend. Mobile phones did not exist, I sent him a telegram. But I have not met one, as it turned out, he lived with his future wife. I wandered alone on the overcast, gray Leningrad, was a lousy mood. Accidentally on my way was the box office. I would like to pass the time somehow until the next train, as a return ticket was purchased in advance. Looking through posters, I saw the name of an unknown to me then group UB40. It was the first concert in the Soviet Union, was the first city of Leningrad, and this was the first day of the concert. On this day, they gave two concerts and I was able to buy a ticket for the first show. As it turned out, I bought a "reservation", ie the ticket was booked and purchased before the concert. The concert soon had to begin and on the way to the concert hall, I began to realize that I was very lucky, because on my way there were many people who were asked to sell an extra ticket. On the stage set up for very long instrument, the music is repeated the same UB40 song. The concert started 30 minutes late (in fairness I must say that he, too, ended 30 minutes later), hypnotized by the rhythmic reggae music, the audience began to applaud. And it was not impatient slamming calling for a prompt start of the concert. We sincerely respect the serious approach and the group enjoyed her music, clapping our only support group, as if to say: "It's all right, we do not hurry, keep it takes!" When the concert began, I forgot about the weather, about friends, my soul is singing, and so far I am impressed by the creativity UB40! Sincerely, Sergey Rusanov.

UB40 Live Featuring Ali Campbell

In August 1986, order “Rat In The Kitchen” became UB40’s sixth Top 10 album in the UK.

In November 1987 “The Best Of UB40 – Volume One” began its two and a half year tenure on the UK charts, capsule peaking at No. 3

UB40 again teamed up with Chrissie Hynde, health who joined them on “Breakfast In Bed.” The result was another Top 10 hit, taken from the 1988 album “UB40.”

In 1988 they played the Free Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley Stadium in London, a huge privilege and this led onto UB40’s first US No.1 with Red Red Wine.

Its success reignited interest in “Labour Of Love,” which entered the Billboard’s Top 20, This album gave them three Top 10 hits in America alone, including “Kingston Town” and “Homely Girl,” both of which went Top 10 in the UK and throughout Europe, closely followed by “Here I Am (Come And Take Me)” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do.”

ub40 tour 1986

MAXI Priest

British reggae star Maxi Priest rose up through the late ’80s and ’90s to become one of the most internationally popular reggae singers since  Bob Marley . His lovers rock vocal chops and flirtations with pop and R&B styles scored him multiple worldwide hits, including the trans-Atlantic chart-topper “Close to You,” and a sunny cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World.” Priest’s silky-smooth voice was ideally suited for light, romantic material that fused reggae backbeats with R&B’s romanticism, and his most popular work was as sensual as it was soulful.

Inner Circle

Inner Circle

Inner Circle is, of course, best known for “Bad Boys,” a ubiquitous crossover hit thanks to its use as the theme song for the long-running Fox TV reality series Cops. But the band had a lengthy history prior to its international breakthrough, dating all the way back to the late ’60s. They hit the big time in Jamaica during the ’70s as a danceable yet rootsy Rastafarian reggae outfit.

BIG MOUNTAIN

Much like  UB40 , American reggae band Big Mountain brought a very commercialized version of Jamaican music to the American mainstream when their cover of  Peter Frampton’s  “Baby, I Love Your Way” reached the Top Ten in early 1994. To the band’s credit, though, its three albums contain reggae roots music combined with only several R&B-ish covers, and the lineup includes two Jamaicans with excellent credentials: rhythm guitarist  Tony Chin  and drummer  Santa Davis  — both of whom played with  Peter Tosh ‘s band and  the Soul Syndicate .

Third World

Celebrating 47 years, ‘Reggae Ambassadors’, THIRD WORLD is one of the longest-lived Reggae bands of all time, & one of Jamaica’s most consistently popular crossover acts among international audiences. Mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, rock, dancehall & rap, Third World’s style has been described as “reggae-fusion”.
