Tripadvisor.

Our travel agent had arranged this tour for us. It was fabulous! Delphine met us at the cruise port in Lahaina, Maui to take us on a trip where we had requested to go half way to Hana. She is so personable, professional and informative and really knows Maui.

One of the best van tours that I’ve ever been on. The operator, Delphine, was engaging, informative and entertaining. In addition a wide range of snacks were available as well as water. A great lunch was served. Could not ask for more. Good attention to details.

Whoop Jenny

Wendy has experience as a park ranger and as a driver on the road to Hana, so we were in very good hands both on the road and in the field. Our group got along great and by the end of the day, we were exchanging emails and photographs. The van was comfortable. Wendy was a courteous driver in regards to bathroom breaks, roadside photo ops, and climate control. Lunch was yummy with healthy options.

Hate bus tours? These 7 unique guided tours were made for you

W hether I'm vacationing with my family or traveling solo , I love having a guide when I'm exploring a new destination. But guided tours that consist of riding on a bus for days on end are just not for me. If you're like that too, I have good news, because it turns out there are plenty of other ways to travel with the benefit of a guide.

If you want active family travel adventures or simply an alternative to the classic coach tour , there are options around the globe for you to hit the road without hitting the (actual) road. Here are my top non-bus tour picks, which include hiking, biking, trekking, and kayaking tours; expedition and river cruises; and a train journey for the ages.

WORLD'S BEST: 15 best guided tour operators for trips around the world

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. A Hiking Tour

Norway Fjord Trekking with G Adventures

Plan to move more and see plenty as you hike through the land of the Vikings. G Adventures offers a range of adventure tours, and trekking the fjords of Norway is a great way to take advantage of one of the company's areas of expertise: hiking.

After a ferry journey from Bergen, you'll settle into basic accommodations in Odda, your home base for five days of trekking at moderate and high altitude. Highlights of those treks include walking across the blue ice of the Folgefonna Glacier, taking in the views across the Hardangerfjord, and hiking the Oddadalen Valley.

WOMEN TRAVELING TOGETHER: 9 best tour companies for women’s-only tours

G Adventures prides itself on taking care of the adventure and activities, so you have experienced guides and spend your days touring the dramatic landscape. Since it's a budget-minded adventure tour, the itinerary includes basic accommodations such as the Trolltunga Hotel. With a lounge and bar and basic rooms, you’ll have everything you need, including a lakeside location at the end of your active days.

  • Starting price: $2,465
  • Length: 7 days, 6 nights
  • Activity level: Challenging ("Some high-altitude hikes or more strenuous activities, but accessible to most healthy travelers.")

2. An Expedition Cruise

Indonesia and Papua New Guinea itineraries with Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer some of the most incredible cruise opportunities on the seven seas. Pairing the sophistication and quality of Lindblad Expeditions and the knowledgebase of Nat Geo, these opportunities are the go-to for small-ship educational and elegant cruising. With 28 destinations , you have your choice, but I recommend the opportunity to get up close and personal with the islands of Southeast Asia, many of which are uninhabited and otherwise impossible to get to.

TOUR REVIEW: National Geographic Expeditions’ Costa Rica Wildlife and Conservation Tour walks on the wild side

Lindblad-National Geo’s five itineraries in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea range from 11 to 20 days. On the Bali and Beyond trip, guests visit three national parks, including Komodo, a UNESCO Heritage site. And on the Journey through Southeast Asia sailing, guests see both the urban beauty of Singapore and the reefs on the islands of the Andaman Sea.

Though much of what there is to see and do is in the water and on land, you’ll have an experience on board as well. With no assigned seat dining and casual attire, you’ll feel right at home in the dining room, and a central lounge brings people together to share photos, stories, and experiences.

"Onboard, I loved hanging out in the lounge, where there was always good snacks and drinks, good conversations, and often an informative and interactive talk from one of the onboard experts," says TourScoop's Christine Sarkis, who sailed with Lindblad on its seasonal Baja California offering Among the Great Whales .

  • Starting price: $9,800
  • Length: 11-20 days
  • Activity level: Easy to Moderate

3. A Train Tour

Vancouver to Lake Louise, Canada, aboard the Rocky Mountaineer

Traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer is an unrivaled experience in train travel. This unique journey through Western Canada is worth every penny, whether you choose the Silver or Gold-Leaf experience . The journey along rivers, valleys, and mountaintops is truly one of a kind, as the local roadways cannot access this route.

"I took this trip a few years back and still think of it at least once a month. The views, the food, and the comfort were so exceptional that it really stands out," says TourScoop's Christine Sarkis.

TRAIN TRIPS: 12 best Amtrak vacations and scenic train rides in North America

The six-day adventure on the First Passage experience starts with your arrival day plus one in Vancouver; that's time enough to explore the Stanley Park Seawall, stroll through historic Gastown, or take the ferry to Granville Island.

Your first of two days on the train will take you to Kamloops; as you go, river canyons, green fields, and lush forests surround you as you wind along the Thompson River to Kamloops. Unique to the Rocky Mountaineer, you actually spend your evenings on terra firma , enjoying comfortable lodging in Vancouver, Kamloops, and majestic Lake Louise. On the second day, experience high mountain passes, ranch land, and snow-capped peaks as you wind your way to your final destination at Lake Louise.

The Rocky Mountaineer’s glass-domed train cars are why you’ll book this trip, but you'll have the added reward of knowledgeable hosts, delicious locally-inspired breakfast and lunch options, and comfortable and spacious reclining seats with plenty of legroom.

  • Starting price: $2,653
  • Length: 6 days, 5 nights
  • Activity level: Easy

4. A kayak tour

San Juan Islands, Washington, with Anacortes Kayak Tours

There are plenty of ways to see Washington state's San Juan Islands , but there's nothing better than staying close to the water to experience the thrill of wildlife both in and above the water.

If you're up for a little bit of challenge and want to get a sense of the islands, a multi-day kayak tour is the way to go, and Anacortes Kayak Tours provides the perfect intro and enough options to adapt to all sorts of budgets and interests. With two- to five- day overnights (and options for both all-inclusive and self-catered), this family owned company offers what we all look for in a tour: flexibility.

BRING THE KIDS: 50 family vacation ideas for the best trip ever

Anacortes Kayak Tours is a family-owned business born out of Megan and Erik Schorr’s love of the water. You’ll feel that love permeates through every aspect of your experience with this company, from the super friendly booking staff (though you can book online) and passionate and deeply knowledgeable guides to the high-quality gear.

When I went with my family, our guide was kind and funny, and engaged our kids beautifully (both a teen and a child), helped us find and identify birds, plants, tidal changes, and sea life, and always put safety first. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Three-day options can give you a peak at the Cypress Island Reserve or Stuart, Jones, or Sucia Islands. Longer trips might take you as far as the Canadian border or the Wasp Islands. And, if you’d like to plan your own tour as a family-owned business, Anacortes is ready and willing to create a custom itinerary for your group of six or more, including all meals and glamping-like accommodations.

  • Starting price: $499 and up with options to self-cater or have all-inclusive meals
  • Length: 2-5 nights or custom
  • Activity level: Moderate to Challenging

5. A riverboat tour

Pharaohs and pyramids: Cairo, Egypt, with Viking River Tours

On the 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids tour from Viking Rivers Cruises , guests go deep on the wonders of the Nile. These well-appointed ships are designed particularly for Nile River cruising, and set you up to have a 360-degree view of the river from the sundeck, pool deck, lounge area, and restaurant.

There's plenty onboard as well, including a lounge and bar, pool and two jacuzzis, and a range of sleeping options—including almost 300 square foot suites. During the river portion of the trip, you'll see the Aswan High Dam, ride in a felucca sailing ship, and see temples that demonstrate the incredible feats of ancient Egyptian engineering.

  • Starting price: $5,999
  • Length: 12 days, 11 nights

6. A walking tour

Walking the Portuguese Camino with Intrepid Travel

Travelers can count on Intrepid Travel for a variety of adventures and for staying true to its mission of “creating positive change through the joy of travel.” A certified B Corp with a commitment to climate action, empowering and supporting local communities, and sustainable development, Intrepid is a trusted name in group travel.

WALK THE WORLD: 9 best companies for walking, trekking, and hiking tours

The Santiago de Compostela is a bucket-list hike for many. But with seemingly infinite ways to do it, it's nice to let Intrepid do the heavy lifting of coordinating, and take this alternative route along what is known as the Portuguese Camino , which follows the Portuguese coast from Porto to the Camino.

There are fewer pilgrims on this lesser-known trail, so you’ll enjoy unencumbered vistas paired with lunch stops and a dedicated rest day in Vigo. One part of your walk includes local wineries and the hot springs of the Caldas de Rei region. With all of that walking, you’ll appreciate that Intrepid transfers your luggage between your accommodations, so you can bring what you need but only need to carry a day pack.

  • Starting price: $2,390
  • Length: 10 days, 9 nights
  • Activity level: Moderate (long walking days, sometimes carrying all bags for up to 30 minutes)

7. A bike tour

No need for a custom trip if you're going to ride with Backroads . Known in the industry for its knowledgeable guides, community-building approach, and detailed planning, Backroads trips feel personalized. And with backpacking, hiking, snow-adventure, cruising, culinary, and multi-adventure trips, Backroads covers a lot of different adventures.

FROM THE VINE: 9 best European wine tours to take this year

There's a lot to love about Backroads’ seven-day adventure through the lakes and volcanoes of Chile , which is geared to sporty adult families. Starting in Puerto Varas, you’ll wind your way through Chile’s Ring of Fire with stunning views of remote lakes and valleys. Along the way, you’ll have an opportunity to sample local foods, explore the intersection of cultures in colonial villages, and learn from local indigenous leaders.

This Backroads trip offers premium lodging (other trips might offer either premium or casual), which means you’ll stay in elegant hotels with exceptional views, plus perks like pools and spas. All meals, beverages, and snacks are included as well.

This particular bike tour includes Backroads’ standard titanium bikes, helmets, and accessories, and given the distance it covers, also includes shuttling to make sure your biking experience covers the most special views—fear not, the views from the shuttle aren't too shabby either.

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

The trip has been a fantastic experience. Very well organized and with a perfect itinerary to visit the most important national parks. Our guide, Haley, exuded enthusiasm, was always very close and friendly and was very attentive and solicitous, at all times, to the needs of the group. Luckily, the four of us were able to do the tour alone (we were with our family) and everything was very easy. We believe, however, that it is not very appropriate to charge a supplement for meals (some sandwiches that, necessarily, were repeated day after day). We also miss some more precise cultural information about the history and characteristics of the places visited. Likewise, we believe that the price is very high and that, therefore, the breakfasts of two of the hotels should also be included, strangely excluded unlike the others. That being said, the Tour is wonderful and well worth it.

Western USA National Parks Loop Tour

Western USA National Parks Loop

One of the best group trips I have ever been on. Rene was absolutely fantastic! Zion national park, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon are absolutely amazing places to visit. Photos can not do justice to the sheer magnificent beauty. Our group was amazing, friendly, fun, always on time and ages 30s-60s. The accommodations were sufficient and the hikes were manageable even for someone like myself who is not the most physically fit. I would suggest arriving a day or 2 early in Vegas or staying the night you return to get the most out of the experience. The Hoover dam is not included but there are short day trips from Vegas that cover this area which is definitely worthwhile. The days were long but there was sufficient rest at night to cope with some of the early morning wake up times. Which was WELL worth it!! Seeing the Grand Canyon at sunset was a sight I will never forget. If I can give 10 stars I would. This was my first intrepid trip and I have to say it won’t be the last. Even though we were unable to kayak lake Powell because time of year, we saw antelope canyon which was quite spectacular. Monument valley was also an experience to remember. If you have the opportunity to go, do it! You won’t regret one minute!

Some of the downsides were due to the weather, at times, which nothing could be done about, so we got on with it. Some of the main downs were due to my naivety, in thinking some facilities (like cash paying taxis from SLC airport; I persuaded a friendly Uber driver to accept cash!) were what I was used to, and that I wouldn't have to re-enter security when changing planes from LHR to SLC, at PHX, even though I was on a connecting, booked, flight, and my baggage had already been labelled for both airports appropriately, at LHR. Altogether, a very good, and memorable holiday, where I visited some parts of the Parks that I visited before, but saw many more, and different sights in them.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in USA

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.
Great tour, good group size too
the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!

18 unusual London tours: quirky & fun options

Want to get beyond the icons of London? Booking a place on one of these unusual London tours will make your trip to the UK capital memorable.

Looking across the Thames and Millennium Bridge to St Paul's Cathedral at night. Discover unusual London tours, guaranteed to make your time in the city special.

The UK capital is the type of place where you would never be bored, but you could go broke, because there are so many fun things to do in the city, particularly in the form on unusual London tours.

Yes, there is indeed a time-honoured tourist trail in London of go-to-a-museum-see-Tower-of-London-ride-the-Eye-go-to-West-End-show, etc. But there are plenty of other bizarre and whacky activities to do in the city – like eating in the dark or trying your hand at taxidermy .

Tours are an excellent way to see a city and London is no exception. Yet, rather that trailing around the same old spots, why not try something a little bit different? Particularly if you’re going on a date in London and want to do something a bit different.

I’ve rounded up some of the most unusual tours you can do in London. Get onto it!

This post forms part of my guide to London . Check out this 4 day itinerary for the city and read tips on how to not look like a tourist in London .

Unusual London tours by day

Here are some unusual tours in London, which will take you through the city during the daylight hours.

People walking across Millennium Bridge In London at dusk.

Get Around Quickly

1. Harry Potter Walking Tour

Potterheads unite! This free walking tour will take you through the finer sights of London, whilst pointing out locations from the Harry Potter films, such as the real Diagon Alley (the gorgeous Leadenhall Market) and the bridge blown up by Death Eaters. (If you’re a massive fan, you’ll probably want to check out the Warner Brother’s Harry Potter Studio Tour at some point as well).

Be sure to tip your guide at the end!

Plus, if you fancy going full Potter, you may consider spending the night in a Wizard themed hotel .

There are stacks of other Harry Potter tours available and if you’re after a paid option that’s a bit quirkier, why not take one which comes with a boat ride ?

2. Climb the Roof of the O2

The O2 in North Greenwich is a multi-purpose indoor arena.

A fun London date idea (if you’re both okay with heights) is to climb to the roof of the O2 , in order to take in 360° views of the city.

Yup, it’s not an event for the fainthearted, or those who suffer from vertigo. But, it’s sure to be memorable.

Street art in London of a Chanel bottle full of skulls.

3. Street Art Tour

Street art isn’t in itself unusual, but London does have a lot of unique street art, particular in the city’s east.

In this tour , you’ll learn about the work of the artists in the city, while you explore one of London’s most interesting areas.

After the tour is complete, you’ll learn how to make some street art of your own.

Inside Euston's 'lost' tunnels, which you can explore as part of a Hidden London Tour.

4. Hidden London Tours

As far as unusual London tours go, these are some of my favourites, mostly due to the level of history that is involved.

London Transport have opened up some of the disused stations and tunnels across the city’s Underground network – from Euston’s Lost Tunnels, to Aldwych Station and the bunker where Winston Churchill took refuge during the height of the Blitz during WWII.

A word of warning – these tours sell out FAST. The website has the ticket release dates, so make your decision and pick a backup, just in case the tour you want sells out.

Discover what it’s like to tour Euston Station’s lost tunnels .

5. The London Loo Tour

This has to be one of the most unusual London tours… can I go so far as claiming perhaps in the world?

As the name suggests, here is an opportunity to tour some of London’s finest public facilities. The Loo Tours operate through Waterloo and Bloomsbury, with a third tour dedicated to the life of Thomas Crapper, a pioneer of bathroom fittings.

Now you know why toilets are often referred to as “crappers”. Are you as delighted as I am?

And why not wind up your day by going and drinking in a toilet bar? The Bermondsey Arts Club and Cocktail Bar is a personal favourite of mine.

NEVER MISS A POST! SIGN UP FOR THE BIRDGEHLS NEWSLETTER , WHICH WILL HIT YOUR INBOX ONCE A MONTH.

Sprawling cemetery in London.

6. Tour Highgate Cemetery

Why not take a stroll through Highgate Cemetery ?

The graveyard is divided into two sections – the East and the West. The East is the final resting place of literary great George Eliot, the artist Patrick Caulfield and the cemetery’s most famous resident, Karl Marx (you know – the founding father of Communism).

The West can only be seen as part of a guided tour, which enable you to stroll up the Egyptian Avenue, through a pair of giant obelisks to the Circle of Lebanon cedar tree, which is older than the cemetery itself. Then there are the graves of course, such as the Terrace Catacombs and the very impressive Mausoleum of Julius Beer, built by a grieving father in homage to his daughter.

7. James Bond Walking Tour

His name is Bond… James Bond and he’s a British icon.

If you’re a fan of 007, or love exploring film locations on your travels, hop on a tour that will lead you around to various London icons that feature in the Bond films and immerse yourself in his world.

You’ll also visit real locations frequented by spies and discover secret bunkers within the city, amongst many other interesting historical facts.

8. Unseen Tours

Unseen Tours are tours with a philanthropic difference.

These tours are led by people who have experienced homelessness. 60% of each ticket price is paid to each guide.

So, go learn something new about a popular area of London and get to know someone who you may not have necessarily crossed paths with, in the process.

9. Hidden City

Here’s a tour that will get your brain juices flowing while you see the city’s sights.

After registering a team with Hidden City , you’ll be sent a bunch of cryptic clues to your mobile phone. Each clue will lead you to a new location a short walk away.

Once you’ve solved the clue, you text your answer back, in order to receive the next clue. There are around 12-20 for each trail, which will take anywhere from 2-4 hours to solve (pending on your thinking abilities and level of jet lag at the time).

There is a range of tours available, from the Shoreditch street art themed, to the more niche Moriarty’s Game, where you’ll follow a Sherlock Homes inspired trail put together by his quick-thinking nemesis.

10. See Secret London by Bike

A city as big and as old as London has a lot of secrets.

From historical landmarks, to kooky characters, you’ll learn about them all on this 4 hour tour around the city … on a bicycle!

A woman in a red raincoat standing in Deptford Creek in London's southeast.

11. Deptford Creek Tour

Once a month the folk at the Creekside Discovery Centre will don their waterproofs and gumboots and take a group of willing participants to explore Deptford Creek during low tide .

The creek is home to a range of biodiversity (making it perfect for nature enthusiasts and budding biologists). As the trust declares, “You don’t have to leave London to have a wild day out.”

↠ RELATED: A WILD DAY OUT AT DEPTFORD CREEK

12. Medicine & Disease Tour

One of the more unusual London tours will take you back in time to London at its grimiest – a city where epidemics spread quickly .

You’ll pass by the oldest surviving medical society in England and see the site of Florence Nightingale’s first hospital and learn about how London grew from disease-ridden city, to the capital of a country which one of the greatest health systems in the world.

13. London by kayak

Keen to see London from a different angle and get an upper-body workout into your day? Why not book onto a kayak tour from Greenwich to Battersea (or vice versa)?

During this three-hour journey you’ll pass the city’s most notable landmarks, such as the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s, the London Eye, Houses of Parliament… this list goes on!

All equipment is provided.

Close up of some of the goodies on offer at the Ritz Hotel's afternoon tea.

14. Afternoon Tea Tour

This one is rather self-designed, but if you like tea, cakes and crustless sandwiches, why not go on your very own tour of some of London’s finer establishments?!

I’ve done the hard yards for you – here’s some places where you can get a decent and inexpensive high tea .

15. Gin Distillery Tour

The British love their gin and Sipsmith Distillery (great name) offer up the opportunity three times a week to learn a little more about London’s gin-soaked past, while you sip on a few spirits and see the stills in motion.

Unusual London Tours By Night

Here are some tour options to liven up your night (or evening, in some cases).

Nighttime in London, looking at the Thames and London Eye. Discover unusual tours in London to do by night.

16. Secret Indian Food Tour

Love Indian food? You’ll find some great restaurants in London, particularly in the East-End.

You’ll be introduced to some notable Indian restaurants, allowing yourself to eat as much naan, korma, biryani and the like as your can handle.

Start this unique London tour with an empty stomach.

17. London Literary Pub Crawl

This literary pub crawl describes itself as being “less of a traditional tour and more of a guided performance”.

On this tour you’ll be very much entertained as you’re brought to where literary greats such as Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, T.S Eliot and George Orwell drank, ate and worked (and you too can grab a tipple in the taverns and pubs that so inspired them!).

Tour guides of Herstorical tours in costume.

18. Herstorical Tours

After an unusual walking tour in London which mixes drama and history, adds a dash of comedy and sprinkles over a bit of feminism to boot?

It’s a pretty well-known fact that women’s stories haven’t exactly had a place in the pages of history. The good old patriarchy has done a solid job of silencing women’s voices and stories, so that as Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once quipped ‘well-behaved women seldom make history’ – and even the more ‘wicked’ of women are lost to the sands of time.

Herstorical Tours are trying to right this wrong, in London at least. Their immersive theatre tours aim to uncover the city’s herstory, with a particular focus on the darker aspects of London’s past.

There’s currently two tours on offer – ‘Hex and the City’, which tell tales of London’s witchy past and ‘Harlots & Strumpets & Tarts, Oh My!’, which details the experiences of the West End’s sex workers in the 18th century.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Definition of a Self-Guided Tour

A self-guided tour is a form of travel where individuals or small groups explore a destination without the presence of a tour guide. In a self-guided tour, you are in control of your own itinerary, activities, and pace, allowing for a truly personalized and immersive travel experience.

Unlike guided tours, which typically involve a tour operator or guide leading a group of travelers, self-guided tours provide you with the freedom to design your own adventure. You have the flexibility to choose the attractions you want to visit, the activities you want to engage in, and the amount of time you want to spend at each location.

Self-guided tours can be tailored to almost any type of traveler. Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple seeking a romantic getaway, a family with children, or a group of friends, self-guided tours offer the flexibility to cater to your specific interests and preferences.

Moreover, self-guided tours are not limited to a particular mode of transportation. They can be done on foot, by bike, or even by car, depending on the destination and the level of exploration desired.

One of the key elements of a self-guided tour is the inclusion of detailed travel materials. These materials, such as maps, guidebooks, and digital resources, provide the necessary information to navigate the destination independently. They often include suggested routes, historical and cultural insights, and practical tips to enhance the overall experience.

While self-guided tours offer flexibility and personalization, they also require a certain level of self-reliance and preparation. Having the ability to navigate and make decisions independently is essential, as is conducting thorough research and planning in advance.

Now that we have a clear understanding of what constitutes a self-guided tour, let’s explore the advantages it offers over traditional guided tours.

Advantages of Self-Guided Tours

Self-guided tours offer a plethora of advantages that make them an appealing choice for travelers seeking a more independent and customized experience. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Flexibility and Freedom: One of the major advantages of self-guided tours is the freedom to set your own schedule. You are not bound by strict itineraries or timetables, allowing you to spend more time in places that interest you and skip attractions that don’t resonate with your preferences. The level of flexibility enables you to fully embrace the spontaneity and adapt your plans to suit your mood and desires.
  • Customization: With a self-guided tour, you have the ability to tailor your experience to your specific interests and needs. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or an outdoor adventurer, you can design an itinerary that revolves around your passions. This level of customization ensures that you get the most out of your trip and have a meaningful and enriching experience.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Self-guided tours often prove to be more budget-friendly compared to guided tours. With no additional fees for guides or tour operators, you have more control over your expenses. You can choose accommodations, restaurants, and activities that align with your budget, allowing you to stretch your travel funds further and potentially explore more destinations.
  • Privacy and Independence: While guided tours are great for meeting fellow travelers and socializing, self-guided tours offer a higher level of privacy and independence. You have the freedom to explore at your own pace and immerse yourself in the destination on your own terms. This solitude can provide a sense of tranquility and allow for a deeper connection with the surroundings.
  • Authentic Local Experiences: With a self-guided tour, you have the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the local culture. Without the confines of a guided group, you can interact with the locals, try authentic cuisine, and explore hidden gems that may not be included on traditional guided tour itineraries. This authenticity adds an extra layer of depth and richness to your travel experience.

These advantages make self-guided tours an appealing option for travelers who value independence, freedom, and the ability to craft their own unique journey. With these benefits in mind, it’s time to delve into how self-guided tours work and the steps involved in planning one.

How Self-Guided Tours Work

Self-guided tours operate on the principle of giving travelers the tools and resources they need to explore a destination independently. Here’s a general overview of how self-guided tours work:

  • Research and Planning: The first step in embarking on a self-guided tour is conducting thorough research about the destination. This includes gathering information about key attractions, local customs, transportation options, and accommodation choices. Use guidebooks, travel websites, and online forums to gather insights and recommendations.
  • Choosing a Route or Itinerary: Once you have a good understanding of the destination, you can select a route or itinerary based on your interests and time constraints. Decide on the attractions you want to visit, the order in which you want to see them, and the duration of your stay at each location. Consider any logistical factors such as transportation availability and opening hours of attractions.
  • Obtaining Travel Resources: The next step is to gather the necessary travel resources to navigate the destination. This can include maps, guidebooks, mobile apps, and GPS devices. These resources will provide you with detailed directions, points of interest, and valuable insights about the attractions you’ll encounter along the way.
  • Arranging Accommodation and Transportation: Once you have a rough itinerary, it’s time to book your accommodations and arrange transportation. Depending on the destination and your preferences, this can range from reserving hotels and rental cars to organizing train or bus tickets. Make sure to consider the proximity of your accommodations to the attractions you plan to visit.
  • Exploring at Your Own Pace: The beauty of a self-guided tour is the freedom to explore at your own pace. Follow the suggested route, but don’t be afraid to deviate from it if something catches your eye or piques your interest. Take as much time as you need at each attraction, leisurely stroll through the streets, and savor the local cuisine. The pace is entirely up to you.
  • Engaging with Local Culture: To truly make the most of your self-guided tour, engage with the local culture. Interact with the locals, try regional specialties, and participate in cultural activities. This will provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the destination and create memorable experiences along the way.
  • Documenting Your Journey: Lastly, don’t forget to document your journey. Capture photos, write in a travel journal, or create a blog to commemorate your experiences. Sharing your adventures with others can be a great way to inspire fellow travelers and reminisce about your self-guided tour in the future.

Remember, self-guided tours offer the freedom and flexibility to design your own adventure. While they require some upfront planning and research, the reward is a truly personalized and immersive travel experience. Now that you have the basic understanding of how self-guided tours work, let’s move on to discussing the steps involved in choosing and planning a self-guided tour.

Choosing and Planning a Self-Guided Tour

Choosing and planning a self-guided tour requires careful consideration and attention to detail. Follow these steps to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience:

  • Selecting Your Destination: Start by researching and identifying destinations that align with your interests and travel preferences. Consider factors such as climate, cultural attractions, outdoor activities, and historical significance. Narrow down your options to a few destinations that pique your curiosity.
  • Researching the Destination: Once you’ve chosen a destination, delve deeper into its attractions, transportation options, and local customs. Use guidebooks, travel websites, and online forums to gather valuable insights and recommendations from fellow travelers who have visited the location.
  • Determining the Duration: Assess how much time you have available for your self-guided tour. Consider the number of attractions you want to visit and the pace at which you prefer to explore. Keep in mind that some destinations may require more time to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
  • Deciding on Activities and Attractions: Identify the key activities and attractions you want to experience during your self-guided tour. Make a list of must-see landmarks, museums, parks, local markets, or any other points of interest that resonate with your interests.
  • Mapping Out Your Itinerary: Take into account the location of each attraction and plan a logical route to follow. Consider grouping attractions that are in close proximity to optimize your time and minimize unnecessary travel. Also, factor in any operating hours or seasonal closures to ensure you can visit each attraction during your chosen dates.
  • Booking Accommodation: Research and book your accommodations in advance. Look for options that are conveniently located near the attractions you plan to visit. Consider factors such as comfort, price, amenities, and availability.
  • Arranging Transportation: Determine the most suitable mode of transportation for your self-guided tour. This could include renting a car, using public transportation, or opting for alternative options such as bicycles or scooters. Be sure to consider the infrastructure, traffic conditions, and accessibility of your chosen destination.
  • Obtaining Travel Resources: Collect the necessary travel resources such as maps, guidebooks, or digital apps. These tools will provide you with essential information and help you navigate the destination with ease. Consider downloading offline maps or using GPS devices to ensure accurate directions.
  • Preparing for the Unexpected: As with any travel experience, it’s important to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Familiarize yourself with the local emergency contact information, purchase travel insurance, and research any health or safety precautions relevant to your destination.
  • Remaining Flexible: While planning is crucial, it’s equally important to remain flexible during your self-guided tour. Allow for adjustments and spontaneous decisions along the way. Embrace unexpected opportunities and be open to deviations from your original itinerary.

By following these steps and putting in the necessary time and effort into the planning process, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on an exciting self-guided tour. Now, let’s explore some tips to ensure a successful and rewarding self-guided tour experience.

Tips for a Successful Self-Guided Tour

Embarking on a self-guided tour can be a thrilling and fulfilling experience. To ensure a successful and memorable adventure, consider these tips:

  • Do Thorough Research: Before setting off on your self-guided tour, immerse yourself in research about the destination. Familiarize yourself with local customs, transportation options, and important landmarks. This will make navigating the destination much easier and help you better understand and appreciate the local culture.
  • Create a Detailed Itinerary: Plan your itinerary in detail, including the attractions you want to visit and the activities you want to partake in. However, allow for flexibility and be open to making changes along the way. Strike a balance between having a plan and embracing spontaneous discoveries.
  • Get Reliable Travel Resources: Invest in reliable travel resources such as guidebooks, maps, or mobile apps that are specific to the destination. These resources will provide you with valuable information, such as historical facts, local tips, and directions, allowing you to navigate with confidence.
  • Stay Organized: Keep all your travel documents, maps, and itineraries organized in a safe and easily accessible manner. Consider using digital platforms or apps to store digital copies of your documents for quick and convenient access.
  • Learn Basic Local Phrases: Learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in fostering connections and showing respect to the locals. Phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” can help break the ice and enhance your overall experience.
  • Be Mindful of Local Customs: Respect the local customs and traditions of the destination you’re visiting. Familiarize yourself with appropriate dress codes, tipping customs, and cultural norms. Being respectful and considerate towards the local culture will enrich your interactions and create a positive impression.
  • Stay Connected: Ensure you have reliable means of communication during your self-guided tour. Purchase a local SIM card or consider using international data plans to stay connected with loved ones and have access to online maps or emergency assistance if needed.
  • Practice Responsible Tourism: Be mindful of the impact you have on the environment, local communities, and cultural sites. Respect nature, dispose of waste properly, support local businesses, and leave a positive and sustainable footprint wherever you go.
  • Stay Safe: Prioritize your safety throughout your self-guided tour. Stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas at night, and follow any safety advice provided by locals or authorities. It’s also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
  • Embrace the Journey: Finally, remember that a self-guided tour is all about the journey and the experiences you encounter along the way. Embrace the independence, take in the sights, tastes, and sounds of the destination, and create lasting memories. Allow yourself to get lost in the magic of the journey and enjoy every moment.

This was an interesting experience. I mean, how often does the chance to ride in a covered wagon present itself? The barbeque lunch was so good! My friend is vegan. I didn’t know they offered a vegan alternative to the lunch, but they said you had to request it ahead of time. However, they magically made it appear, even though we hadn’t pre-requested it. They went above and beyond. – Review via Viator user Deborah_P

eBike and Hike To Johnston Canyon

  • Star Ratings: 4.5/5 (45+ reviews)

Combine two popular activities in one guided tour! Swiftly e-bike and admire views of Vermilion Lakes, the forests of Legacy Trail, and the Bow Valley Parkway. From there, this half-day tour continues a hike to Johnston Canyon (Banff’s most popular day hike), including the Lower Falls Bridge.

Johnston Canyon Banff National Park

This tour is a great alternative since the Bow Valley Parkway is closed to vehicles from June to September. Fast and efficient, cover 26km biking and 3km walking in this 4-hour, round trip tour.

Wonderful scenic bike and hike!! Monica was very accommodating and showed us a great time. 1st time on e-bikes!! What fun!! Best excursion we took while in Banff!! – Review via Viator user Debra_I

Canadian Rockies: Scenic Helicopter Tour

  • Tour Length: Up to 1 hour
  • Star Ratings: 4.9/5 (25+ reviews)

You can find Rockies Heli Canada, the tour operator for this scenic helicopter tour, between the national parks of Banff and Jasper. Take one of their 20, 30, or 55-minute flights and be in awe as you cruise over the heart of the Canadian Rockies any season of the year.

Banff Helicopter Tour

You can see Abraham Lake on the 20-minute flight, soar over Cline Pass and the Wilson Icefield on the 30-minute flight, and have a complete Columbia Icefield adventure for 55 minutes of gorgeous scenery, including frozen lakes and waterfalls narrated by a great tour guide throughout it all. This is one of the best tours to get the bird’s eye perspective of the Canadian Rockies in all of their splendour.

Amazing experience and beautiful scenery. Our pilot was very knowledgeable and guided us through the mountains perfectly. We even got to see some wildlife way up on the mountains. Great people at the front desk and ground crew. Definitely worth it and we would do it again. – Review by GetYourGuide Traveler

Banff Medicine Walk

  • Tour Length: 2 hours

Take an easy yet informative walk in and around Cascade Ponds with an indigenous guide! A truly unique experience that can be done in both winter and summer months, the tour begins with a ceremonial process and is full of cultural information about the land. Hear stories, survival tips, and how the indigenous people of Alberta used various plants, trees, and bushes to survive in the Rocky Mountains for centuries. It is an eye-opening and enjoyable experience that is unique to Banff.

Banff Gondola Ride Admission

  • Star Ratings: 4.5/5 (825+ reviews)

Enjoy a leisurely ride up Sulphur Mountain which offers views of six different mountain ranges! The Banff Gondola leisurely takes you up to nearly 7,500 feet. Then, at the top, stroll the boardwalk at the summit leading to a nearby national historic site and partake in some food and beverages at one of the dining options available. There is a state-of-the-art building at the summit that includes interactive interpretive exhibits, a theatre, and a 360-degree rooftop observation deck.

Banff Gondola soars above Banff townsite and Banff National Park

The Banff Gondola is open year-round, with snow stretching for miles during winter and glistening clear lakes and warm blue skies in summer. While this experience is unguided, there is plenty to explore on your own. Tip: For a different experience, try riding up at night and seeing Nightrise , which utilizes light projections to honour the magic of sacred mountains (Nightrise is returning in October 2023).

The views of the Canadian Rockies are the best! Nowhere else can you get these views. For the price, this is a must-do in Banff. – Review via Viator user Rebecca_V

Banff Tours in Winter: Our Top Pick

Johnston canyon icewalk.

  • Star Ratings: 5/5 (350+ reviews)

Johnston Canyon Icewalk

There is a very high likelihood that when seeing winter photos of Banff posted online, it is Johnston Canyon that is featured. The beautiful ice-covered waterfalls and surrounding scenery are prominently seen in many Instagram photos – and for good reason!

This particular Johnston Canyon tour is our top choice because the reviews are INCREDIBLE. On this tour, you can explore the canyon with a knowledgeable guide who will tell you all about the canyon’s history and geology. The guide also supplies ice cleats to properly hike and explore the steel walkways along the canyon’s edge. Also included is a light snack and hot chocolate to help warm you up during this winter walk.

Dogsledding in Canmore

  • Star Ratings: 4.5/5 (3,600+ reviews)

Departing only 30 minutes outside Banff, this two-hour dog sledding immersive experience even allows you to lead a team of dogs through the Canadian wilderness.

Dog Sledding Banff

You of course have the option of a guide-driven dogsled as well if you would prefer. But regardless of who is in the driver’s seat, the panoramic views of Spray Lake Provincial Park captured via dogsled is an exhilarating opportunity that you won’t want to miss out on.
