Let us now help you with some health-related things that must be included in your USA student travel checklist from India.

The most important health-related things that need to be included in your US student packing list from India are:

  • Health Insurance: The average cost of a trip to the emergency room is INR 58,200, and getting tests or prescriptions can push that cost well over INR 83,200. All universities abroad require Student Health Insurance. This can be obtained from any Indian insurance company and is cost-effective, too, rather than getting it from your university.
  • Health Check-up: Make sure to get a total health check-up done before you leave. Treatments in the US, especially Eye and Dental care, can be pretty expensive.
  • Medicines for cold/fever/cough: Crocin, Combiflam, Diziron, Vicks, Avail.25, etc.
  • Eye contact lenses.

Getting admitted to your dream university is a huge accomplishment. But it can also be a daunting task to figure out how you're going to pay for it. Tuition fees and living costs can be expensive, especially if you're studying abroad. But worry not! You have got Yocket Finance.

Complete List of Things to Carry to USA For Students (with Checklist)

I have a created list of things to carry to the USA for students (F1, J1 and M Visa) who are traveling for the first time.

I have been here in the United States for over 13 years, and had traveled several times from the U.S. to India and from India back here. Not to mentions my visit to 41 U.S. states and 6 countries in Europe.

In our recent trip to India (and back to USA), we took 8 suitcases, one stroller, and 3 carry-on bags. I used my experience over the years to create this list of things for students flying to USA.

I did researched on the list of items to carry from different Indian Students Associations’ websites, but it’s not updated to clearly say what things to buy in the U.S. and while still preparing in India.

  • List of Items to Pack to U.S.-bound Students (for Women)

If you have specific questions about items not listed here, write a comment in this article and I will update the list.

List of Items to Pack to USA

  • Please refer to List of things to buy in the U.S.A. (for kitchen items and household goods).

Please don’t not pack the following items while flying to America. You will just be wasting your precious luggage space because you can readily get those things here.

  • Tamarind Paste
  • Glass (Big mirror)
  • Dal and Flours
  • Heavy Winter Jackets
  • Lots of Books

USA Flight Baggage Allowance

The following will be the usual baggage allowance in flights to the U.S.A.

  • Two Suitcases for check-in. Each 50 lbs (or 23 kgs)
  • 1 Carry On Cabin Bag (8 kgs)
  • 1 Personal Item (Laptop Bag or Purse)

In certain airlines, students with I-20 visas are allowed to check-in 3 suitcases each weighing 23 kgs. It might be worth paying a bit extra in ticket cost if certain airlines allow 3 suitcases. So, check the baggage allowance and shop items as per allowed weight.

Hi thank you very much for this article. I have a few questions that I want to get answered from you. 1. Can i bring external harddrive? Will they check the data in it at the airport? 2. Should i bring my mobile phone or buy new one there? How can i buy a SIM card in USA?

1. CBP can check anything that you carry – Cel phone chats and contents of the drive. If you are worried about if they will *check* then probably you have something that could get you into trouble πŸ™‚ 2. If you have an existing phone, bring that. You don’t have to buy a new hardware.

Do we need to carry some sort of plugs for charging as the points in US differ from that in India? Also what all preparations we need to do for currency, bank accounts , credit cards and driving license to make them valid in US

You can get adapter for the plug point conversion. Carry some dollars, some Indian money ( no note value above 100) and use VISA credit card to access lounges in India, cheap food too at certain airport. Get Driving License after arriving. Normally , Indian license is valid for a year in the USA

all have told or advice that need not carry rice as its aquire more space and easily available in Indian stores, but still can i carry rice along me as i the place where i go there is no Indian store

You cannot carry rice, CBP will ask and threw the rice out from a friend’s bag

USA! and Check the Travel Guide for USA.

Buy It from there , It’s cheaper and made of better quality

Better quality ? really do you believe that? Say better customer service and warranty not quality it’s same throughout the world. If we buy here in US we can finance it i.e, downpayment and mostly payments, which would not be that easy in India

Siddharth Ashok Patro ? Are you serious 😡

You really make it appear so easy along with your presentation however I to find this topic to be really one thing which I feel I would by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and very huge for me. I’m having a look ahead for your subsequent publish, I’ll try to get the hold of it!

My bro sent an Tab from USA, but I forgot the password when I try to unlock it in outside they had installed some other android version, can Carry out that in Laptop along with 2 Mobiles.. I am not carrying any laptop I am just carrying my B1 Folder where I had attended at the time Interview…????

There was an announcement that if your electronic devices can’t be powered on, it maybe not allowed. So, rad about it if it still applies.

I am a B.E graduate and i am looking forward to do MS in the USA. I don’t have friends there so how can i manage to rent an apartment after reaching there i such short notice. Is there any Indian community or any group that helps the Indian students coming to the USA??

Join Pre-Departure Orientation course, You can learn more that what you had asked πŸ™‚

Is stationery (like NoteBooks and Pens) cheap in US or India…

Don’t carry them. It’s waste of suitcase space.

I have to get some Ayurvedic Medicines. What measures should I take ?

How much quantity? Get a prescription from your doctor.

Thanks a million again!

Native US citizen here. Here is my advice on the list you posted:

jeans : bring 4 with you, they are not cheap here. pants: bring at least 1 khaki or black pants, they are not cheap here and you can’t wear jeans everywhere. shorts: at least 2, again, not cheap. T-shirts: around 7, you can buy more here collared shirts/ polo shirts: 2 *may want to buy here, because shirts fashionable in India may not be fashionable here. though, if you just bring solid-color shirts they should be fine. Long-sleeved, button-up shirts: 2. best to bring solid color only- no pattern or stripes. *may want to buy here, because shirts fashionable in India may not be fashionable here. Suit and coat- 0. Yes they cost more here, but as a student, you won’t be going anywhere that would require formal dress. -unless you know someone here who is getting married. after you are here for a year or two, you can find a good deal on a suit, for job interviews. Belts – 2 dress shoes- 1 pair, black sneakers- 2 pair adidas/reebok/nike. these will get dirty quickly, you can buy more here, later at a discount price. socks- 7 pairs. you can also buy cheap at walmart. underwear: 7. bring boxer short type or boxer brief type. if you don’t own these, buy them before you travel. don’t wear bikini-type or regular brief type. just trust me on this. if you need more, you can buy here. Winter coat: definitely buy it here. winter coats from India will not be warm enough for US winters, and will not be fashionable. DO NOT BRING: rice, daal, spices, or any kind of food. it is a waste of valuable luggage space and anything can be bought here. Go to an Indian grocery store here, they have anything you want. DO NOT bring a pressure cooker !! – its heavy and a waste of space. For sure, other Indians will have a pressure cooker and would let you use it, or you will find people cook together and share food alot. If you want your own, buy one on craigslist.com or at an Indian grocery store, or Walmart. DO NOT bring any pots/pans, for same reason. …DO NOT bring any knives!!! They are very cheap here! and if a knife is found in your luggage, you will have a hard time to go through πŸ™ Everything like soap, shampoo, towels, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. is cheap to buy here. BRING from India: Glasses and contact lenses, and many extra!! Very expensive here.. Medicines: If prescribed by a doctor, bring extra.. it may take some time to get refill of your medicine here. Any herbs or ayurvedic medicine, bring with you. You may be able to get these here, or not, depending on the area. DO NOT bring things like cold medicine, pain reliever, these are easily available and very cheap here. Do not bring pillows- waste of space. very cheap here. Blanket- 1 only, will be good enough, and u can buy later.Do not bring clothes hangers, as mentioned above. >>> Go to the store to buy the thing you need, as soon as possible after unpacking your stuff in your apartment.<<<>One more thing, if you are a girl, be very careful of the guys here. Do not go to a guy’s apartment alone. ..when you are outside of your room, Do not EVER leave your drink unattended. If you go to the bathroom, bring your drink with you. >> Guys, feel free to talk to girls, but don’t follow girls around. If you have a girl’s phone number, don’t call repeatedly. Allow her to answer your call in her own time. Do NOT assume that just because a girl goes on a date with you, that she would sleep with you. You may have heard stories about American girls, but you should not believe them to be true. If you are around a girl who is drunk, be a gentleman and watch out for her.

Your comment is so useful. Can I have your email address to stay in touch. Really need some tips

Laptops shouldn;t be an issue. Power Adapter will support 110 to 240.

I have a Cusotmised PC which I plane to send it to my US apartment from here(Mumbai). It needs a 15A socket and it has a two-pin plug. Is it possible to bring all this there?

I have a query regarding ayurvedic medicines. I need to carry a months supplies of ayurvedic as well as allopathic medicines to USA for asthmatic conditions. The allopathic medicines have the labels on them indicating the components. But my ayurvedic doctor gives medicines in tablet and powder form without any labels. How should I go about it?

Also, is there any site which specifies which medicines are allowed in USA and which are not?

Would really appreciate your advice.

Bring the prescription and depends on quantity.

hi raguram.. i have a doubt, if i carry my laptop in my backpack along with my docs ,books… will it get add in the 7kg weight

Yes you can. It take a separate laptop bag in addition to cabin suitcase

Hello Raghuram, you have such a great blog…I have read all the posts of your blog and it is awesome and very helpful…keep it up!!!!!!

I will be travelling to USA in Air india on 22 jan. The baggage dimension limit in air india website for economic class is ” both combined 107 inches” I have two bags whose dimensions combined has 125 inches. Are they particular about dimension or is it ok to carry two bags whose combined dimensions is 125. Please help me on this.

Don’t worry about dimensions. I have 2 sections ( live demo) on what suitcase to buy and how to pack in Pre-Departure Orientation course. Check it out. http://192.138.19.181/products/

Dear Raghuram, Really nice and very helpful article. I have a question here is, I don’t have laptop instead can i carry my camera bag(DSLR camera and few lenses ) as a personal item ?

Yes, you can. But, I would say, put it the cabin suitcase. Easier to take it with you.

Thanks for your article

want to know about the boots

If it’s heavy don’t carry in suit-case. Wear it.

Thank you for the comrehensive list. It’s really helpful for first time travellor to US. I may tavel this year around December(Winter season) with two kids(1.5 yrs and 4 yrs old) and my wife. Please suggest me what should I carry especially for kids at least for initial days.

I will ask my wife to write an article about this.

Get a jacket for everyone, but you can get good ones after you come here.

Get apartment booked before you come with help from friends here. That will make your life easy.

It will take sometime to settle, and initial few weeks will be tough, but manageable.

I carried a 110v mixer juicer grinder from India during my last visit. It occupied most of the space and weight in my baggage. Is there any other alternative, where I can purchase the same from the U.S? Please reply

Yes, Amazon.com sells Preethi and other Indian Brands.

thnks for the information. it helped me much. And Iam going to U.S for an educational trip in May 2013. is 550$ enough for the pocket money???? i am visiting these places: *washington *niagra falls *new york(top 10 places) NASA *Disney and other top places in the U.S……. pls reply me as soon as possible!!!!!!*****

Depends on how much you will spend. Make sure you have cash is accessible when required.

my daughter is going to Tallahassee(Florida) USA.on 20 th December 2021. Can you provide list what to purchase and what precaution she should take before going to USA.

Thanks for sharing the comprehensive list of items that students have to carry to the USA. But the list does not include some of the commonly used gadgets like smart phone and tablet. As a student has to stay connected with his loved ones, you should have included these gadgets in your list.

Some portions of the list are not that reliable. I mean unless you are picking up sports shoes at a donation center, forget about anything good under 30-40 bucks.

how about BLANKET and IRON BOX….?????

my flight is on 23rd july, 2012. I am leaving for Texas, USA. I want some suggestion regarding packing. I am bit confused about food items. Do i need to pack those in carry-on -baggage or check in baggage? Are they going to check food items?

can we carry scissors , stapler and knife?

You forgot undergarments! Lol

HAHA YEAH I’m shocked no one else noticed it

Very useful information. Can you please provide details regarding the items that can be carried while returning back from US. There might be some rules or constraints on the goods that can be carried back.. Please share. Thanks.

It is nice to know before going to US for the first timers.

Thank you P.Venkatesan

remember to utilise carry-on capacity. a small suitcase with 9-10 kilos can come with you in cabin. make sure to read the airlines rules thru their carry-on capacity. some airlines allow one laptop bag also besides that. some airlines allow only one carry on item and you are supposed to put laptop also in that bag only. note that if you are bringing items like shawl, jacket, books, camera dont put it in valuable space, carrry it separately with you.

thanks for the informaion. I am going to US in the next month. can I carry my gold necklace and set of earrings in my baggage during travel. please suggest me.

Take it with you in the carry on baggage.

Good list provided here i wold say

Absolutely necessary things you must carry: Medicines Pressure Cooker Extra Pair of eye Glass/Contact lenses(very expensive here) initial supplies(few clothes/brush paste etc.)

Its good, Thanks… Thanks for list.

I have laptop can i carry it to US without any customs problem or is it more advisable to purchase a new one in US?

It is absolutely fine to carry your laptop with you.

If you’re planning to visit US first time: – remember to get your health check up, dental and eye check ups done in India and also carry your medical records for any future reference. – be careful with your belongings during security clearance etc. i had lot of stuff in my hand, important papers and my laptop and had to go thru London airport for transit…i was advised to watch for my laptop to arrive safely other side of the security belt and take my belongings carefully by officer there – when u reach US it’s usually confusing to call someone u know…ask for help from someone at the airport preferably security officers or travel info desks for help on how to call. Have phone numbers handy with you so u can call them. – as soon as i reached US i had to first get my social security number before i could get my cell phone. if you have contact info of any seniors in ur univ they will help u with social security….for cell phone my class mates used http://www.amfones.com . it was cheaper but they asked for social security info to buy a phone. – first few days of reaching US is taxing…but take it slow…we have all gone thru it…so dont get too stressed. if u have relative or friends in US talk to them to know how to get around things once u reach here. Good Luck!

Can we take electronic gadgets like External hardrives and pen drives to US or will it be problematic when we arrive near port of entry in US.

Yes, you can take external hard drives and pen drives with you. It won’t be a problem.

Hello, Can we take external hard drives with unlicensed $oftware$. Will they look into our computers for these files.

you can take it and nobody will check it. but my sincere advice is that once you reach university, you can get original software. universities have arrangement to sell original softwares for very cheap prices like MS-Office, SPSS etc. for like 20 dollars or so for their enrolled students. if you are research student, then you can get softwares from your professor.

Please let us know how many baggs can be carried on the plane and weithg thanks Manas

Hi, I am just wondering if it is expensive to buy a back pack in US? Because I don’t plan to bring one actually.

get a back pack from India.. its very costly here plus u dont wanna spen money in ur initial days..

I’m guessing the food items are for grad students who will live on their own. Other than that, the list is very comprehensive.

Baggage limit is set by the airline, not by USG. I got 3*23 kg in British airways when I flew a month back. That’s 3 check in bags apart from the cabin allowance.

Hi, We have confusion over baggage allowance with Luftansa Flight. As you had mentioned here about check in as 2*23kg each, dont seems to we are allowed to do so. As per the plociy they had mentioned, we can carry only upto 23 kg of luggage all together is that true can you please get back to us on that. As there site had given details but have confuison with regards to USA flights from India 2 suitcase for check-i. Each 50 lbs (or 23 Kgs)

Lufthansa and most other airlines allow only 1 baggage of 23 KG, starting July. I come in month of July

lufthansa allows two baggage each weigh 23kg for student plus carry on baggage…you need to personally ask them about baggage.

Clothes, Electronics are cheaper in USA. stuff like jackets, shoes, Levis jeans better buy here in USA. on the other hand, do your dental work in india, dentists are horribly expensive here in usa. also bring your eye glasses as many as you can.

Keep some dollars (5) in hand to get a Cart if you are landing at Newark Airport to carry your suitcases. On the other hand, airports like chicago, Dalals, Houston have baggage carts for free.

Heay are the luggage rules not changed can u check with that

Hi, Thanks for providing so much info πŸ™‚ I am headed to OSU in fall this year, planning to buy a laptop from US. I want to ask you whether should I buy the laptop bag also from US? would it be more expensive there?

You can get laptops (+bag) for a lesser rate (+better quality) in US.

I’m just curious.. What is the weight/dimension limit for the “1 personal item”?

For Men usually – Laptop bag and Purse for Woman something like hand bag.

Depends on the airways in which you book your ticket. For example, in Air France they allow you to carry laptop bag + personal item totalling < 12 kg. The same is not available in say Etihad Airways.

Extremely Comprehensive. I’m a 1st time student traveller to the US, and this is just what I was googling for πŸ™‚

A Question: I’m planning to buy my Laptop in the US. So, can I carry a laptop bag on the flight, and NOT have a laptop inside? So, my question is can my carry-on luggage be 1 back pack + a laptop bag (with no laptop inside) ??

Yes – one backpack ( I recommend small suitcase) + laptop bag can use taken with you. Either buy a backpack in US or pack it within suitcase.

Any reason for recommending suit case over backpack. Because the backpack that I have is quite decently sized and can fit 8KG.

Always prefer to get something that can be rolled over, not carried. Sometimes transit will be pain to carrying around 8 kgs on your backpack. This suitcase will come in handy for domestic trips where you want to carry more than 8 kgs and 50 lb suitcase is not required.

makes sense.. I’ll get one.. Thanks!

It’s great HSB…………………….I think there’s no need to ask anyone about this US process……..coz HSB alone is enough. πŸ˜‰ Helping us all in everything………….I’m a bit surprised to see even list of items to carry to US πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Thank you !!

I have faced all the situations you gus are going to face. So, it makes it easy to write to prospective students.

Are we allowed to carry Rice, Dhal and other Indian spices to US? We’re visiting US for the first time and would like to know from you regarding this. I’m flying with my husband and my child (1.5 years old son) to US.

Bring Indian Spices. Don’t waste your baggage space bringing rice and dhal. Since you are coming with 1.5 year old son you can carry some foot items. Trust me its lot easier to deal with baby food items in USA than India. My son is 17 months old πŸ™‚

Hi, It has been very wonderfull post. My query is that..i want to know about the clothing prices over ther like jeans t shirt?is it ok if i buy some pairs there only inUS. Does the same applies to other women accessories

Levis Jean is $28 (they never have sale) but other Jeans are cheap Lee, Wrangler from $10 (both men and women).

missed socks for leg

Thanks. Added.

My wife and I are senior citizens. We want to visit US to stay with our son for six months. We are under medication for BP and heart. Can I carry six months medicine. Where to keep the medicines, in checked baggage or Cabin bag. Can I carry some Ayurveda medicines powder for Diabetes for my wife and some liquid tonics for my grand children. Will you please reply by email

Yes, you will be able to carry medicines for 6 months, but get prescription from the doctor for all the medicine. Depending on how many tablets and amount of medicine, you can either keep them in cabin bag or in checkin bag. Don't keep all of them in one place, try to split it.

Great guidance list.

To add a few, you may want to include Intl Calling / SIM cards (available in India now), Intl plug converter (one plug, can be used in over 6 countries), socks, sandals, chappals, etc.

Just curious to know if anti biotics are allowed to be carrind in US.

Take tablets and get prescriptions form the doctor to be on safe side.

I really think the basic tenet of your approach is wrong. You are trying to see how much you can bring without beating the weight limit. It's the WRONG approach.

Let's see: the limit is 23 x 2= 46 kgs + hand luggage + personal item. That's 50 kgs. That's a crazy amount of mass to be dragging around when you invariably get lost/badly confused on your first trip outside India. In other words, you will be carrying the equivalent weight of a 15 year old boy on your shoulders. The experience is tense and scary enough as it is… 50 kgs of luggage can make it overwhelming.

The focus should be on staying LIGHT. Carry 1 SMALL suitcase (only little bigger than briefcase) and a carry on bag. Dont bring anything that is not absolutely essential. The first 2-3 months are rather survivalistic.

How many times in your international trip you had to carry all 50kgs in your hand? All the airports have something called Baggage Carts. You load the bags in the carts in India at the airport entrance, check in the bags. Checkout the bags at port of entry and each and every airport in US will have baggage carts. Clear the customs and walk out or check-in the bags for your destination.

It would be more useful if this list is categorized and should me excel sheet format. Also differ for short term and long term US stay.

How many Dollars should I bring there along with me? How to adjust for money transfer? Also, should I buy a laptop here in India?

Buy laptop in USA. First sem fees + living expense of $4000 to $6000.

But living expense is only about 500 $ par month! Should I need to carry 4000 to 6000 $ even then? What about subsequent money transfer from India to US?

Hi, Its a very exhaustive list. Thanks for putting it on internet. Its really handy. Even few suggestions below are good. LOL

Hi everyone, could you pls tell me whether we should carry our lugage in large bags(a bit heavy…~2 to 3 kg) like American Tourister, Samsonite etc… or can we carry that in our own bags(made of canvas) which weigh not more than 0.5 kg. I’m asking this because my relatives abroad say that there are no particular restrictions and it depends on our convenience to carry our lugage in which ever type of bags.

Each flight has restrictions on the size of the baggage, if the baggage you are carrying within the stipulated dimensions (length *width*height) you should be fine, there is no restriction on the type of bag,as long as it is within the dimensions, but its better to buy samsonite(american tourister) or VIP, because its more durable. I once send my luggage in a locally made suitcase, at the port of entry when i collected my luggage, there was nothing much left of the bag (handle and wheel broken, and pieces of metal sticking out). So, its your choice πŸ™‚

My GUITAR …. πŸ™ πŸ™

Can't leave my epiphone behind… I've spent 30 grands on it .,… I guess I'll buy the amp there…

nice suggestions for those who traveling to us. really helpful and solutions for questions.

I would like to add a few more things: 1. Medicines: Take some antibiotics.. preferably Amox, Ciplox, and Augmentin. They are very costly in US and need a prescription from a Doc, which is more costly. 2. Also carry some laxatives (Kayam churna, Dulcolax) as u will eat a lot of junk food in early days, as it is cheap. 3. Antacid tablets, pain killers 4. Get a dental checkup done before you go.. as it is not covered in US health insurance. 5. Take plain papers. Printing is cheap in US but papers cost more than here. 6. Indian coffee and tea leaves. 7. some snacks will be good to take for early days. 8. If your family is not well versed with using internet… please make skype or gtalk autologin on your home computer before you go.

Nice article.

Well, I know that this blog is dedicated for students goin to the West but I would appreciate if the same article is re posted for students going to UK.

Please add umbrella as well , its costly here.

I hv a laptop to carry. Is it counted in the carry in luggage in Air India? Obviously it will effect the price limit for the items to carry. Is it better to buy one in US? Are there any restrictions on the data in the laptop?

Laptop bag will be counted as personal item in addition to 1 allowed carry on bag.

it is very nice and will help all..thanks..

Good work man. This post will be of great help for prospective students especially those like me who would want to prepared in every way right from the beginning.

Thank you for wonderful information. I'm traveling on B1 Visa and want to know lots of thing but don't know to whom 2 ask i got my all answer here.

Thank you so much for the info.

you can find the form by searching “US customs Declaration form” in google

gr8 post dude

it will surely help me

Nice Post. All credits to the author.

I'd like to add that phone connections usually come with a free handset (basic models) and if you want a better phone its around $100 extra. So donn't buy a phone just before coming here. Its a waste.

it gives me fine idea to gather things and for the preparation. Thank you so much buddy. what about the inner wears. is that costlier there. pls suggest

Buy underclothing that will last for 15 to 20 days, before you can do laundry. Your must not try to spend money within first 3 months on clothes (other than winter wear) when you reach US.

thanx..!! its really good info. for students… can u help me in getting the same list for UK…?

Hey.., wonderful forum for clearing d minute details dat many ppl usually leave out. Thnx a lot..!!

also I have to carry tablets for complete 1 year . Shall the security object if I am carrying with me so much medicines . Is a doctor prescription needed and if yes , then will it suffice ?

is there any limit to how much liquid I can carry in check-in luggage.actually I need to carry 1 liquid medicine for complete 1 year .

HI, Medicines can be carried in check in luggage but you should have a proper prescription from a doctor about the generic name and the quantity you are carrying with it. Please request your doctor not to use brand names of medicines in prescription. Tablets and properly sealed liquids are allowed.

Regards, Dr. Kovid

gr8 wrk has been posted out here……….thnx a lot…..kp up dis gd wrk ….!!!!!!!!

Hi, Very useful list yar.do update more. will forward to my friends also. can u also post abt the way of transfering money to US account from India,n which bank charges less n things.

@ Vijay General rule for Carry On bag is that it must fit within the top airline shelf. I have seen so many types of Carry on Baggage. Get the suitcase type with stroller. It will be easy to move around with tat. Carrying 8 Kgs within airport will be very tough. As far check in bag size is concerned, I haven't seen any airline measuring the exact size. I have traveled 3 times in Lufthansa, Couple of times in Delta and also in Cathy Pacific. My brother have traveled in Emirates and Jet Airways. He came back from India in June 1week and Lufthansa allowed to carry 32 Kgs with no additional charge. It all depends on the person at the counter helping you check-in. If you happen to know any one whoring in airport, it might help too.

Kudos dude .. I find this website extremely useful ..

@ Vijay: Dimensions are extremely important for hand luggage ( But i m not sure abt the measurements . A rough calculation is, it must go under your flight seat also). For check-in luggage, most airlines adhere to weight ( 23*23*8) whereas certain airlines like lufthansa check dimensions of your suitcase rather than weight . Anyhow chk with your travel agent for more specific details. If that travel agent has influence and if you inform him a week prior your travel, then he can also get special permission for you to carry above 23 kgs/luggage

@ Kilaru: Pressure Cooke – Must; electric Cooker is not a substitute for pressure cooker. If you have space carry Jeans overcoat.

@Avinash: Yes, you can carry sharp items, but not in Carry On Bag. It should be in checked luggage. Make sure you leave your suitcase unlocked or use TSA Locks.

@Vijay: Dimension dosen’t really matter. Don’t for the largest suitcase. Get the medium sized suitcase.

Why do u say pressure cooker is a must? Then we should have cooking stove also isint it?

Why do you need a cooking stove? Apartments comes with cooktop ( electric or gas). You will be going to developed country πŸ™‚

hey dude.. its not "You will be going to developed country". Its "You will be going to a developed country such as america". Need to improve on ur eng first. loser!1

@Akshay: Whats the difference between the two??!!

what about the jeans overcoat….is it necessary???

hey its good seeing all the items that r required for a US gng student…….as im one of them…..so, is the cooker necessary???can we have a electric rice cooker in US….as the electronic items r cheap…..is it true??and can we get it there??plz suggest me…..

xtremely useful 4 first-timers.. gud job mate πŸ™‚

Sir, Will the airport authorities allow to carry sharp items like Knifes, scissors, nail cutters, shaving blades etc.

They allow this in check in baggage

Its very nice to know that people like you do such things and show great altruism.

Thanks, Anup

Dear Sir, my daughter who wishes to attend BBA course in some good USA university has unfortunately scored only 1670 in both the attempts she made. What do you suggest . She informs me that she is allowed only one attempt more and is afraid to take one more attempt without being sure. is she correct. We are in Delhi. And she is now studing in 12th standard and shall be applying for BBA course starting August 2009. Regards AK JAIN

Are you talking about SAT I? she's allowed to take SAT as many times as she want. and 1670 is not that bad untill she gets 500+in CR and 600+ in Maths. so better know about her score and let she be proactive. explain her about this Blog and let she gather information for herself. To inform you I have also received the same score around 1670 in SAT but yet received FULL Scholarship. But its true that I struggled pretty hard to search the university. So explain her that hard work at any stage and any thing pays off in great manner.

so let her to take the initiation and support her at back,.

Hey, u didn’t mention about the dimensions of the baggage. Does it matter alot?

its really much needed info for students going to US for first time. thanks a lot !!! keep posting your further experiences !!

Travel documents checklist for international students in the US

As an international student, you’ve probably traveled halfway across the world to get to your American university; something that many domestic students can only dream about. You probably feel you have seen enough airports, experienced too many layovers and gone through enough immigration control points to last you a couple of years, at least!

That, however, does not mean you shouldn’t travel anymore once you’ve settled into your American university. There may be emergencies that will require you to return to your home country, academic assignments that require you to travel to a foreign country or simply, wanderlust driving you to explore America and beyond.

Traveling is fun but don’t forget your documents! Source: Anete LΕ«siΕ†a on Unsplash

Whatever your purpose, international students should always take note of the necessary travel documents they need to bring along with them while traveling.

Below we compile a checklist of necessary travel documents you will need for different types of travel:

1. Documents for travel and re-entry to the US to resume studies

  • Valid F-1 Visa
  • Valid passport
  • Endorsed and original Form I-20 – this is the form issued to you by your designated school official when you are accepted into a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified institution.
  • Proof of financial support to pay living expenses and tuition fees, such as bank statements, salary slips, and other documents
  • Contact information for the designated school official at the SEVP-certified school they attend.

2. Documents for travel and re-entry to the US to resume Optional Practical Training:

  • Original Form I-20 endorsed from your college or university for re-entry to resume Optional Practical Training.
  • Your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card)
  • Proof of employment, such as a letter from your employer which states the purpose of your trip outside the United States and that you are expected to return to continue employment, is highly recommended.

3. Documents for travel inside the US

  • State-issued picture ID with date of birth
  • Passport (or at least a photocopy of it)

For travel to Alaska or Hawaii, students should consult their respective schools’ international students office. While travel between the 48 states is unrestricted, Florida Institute of Technology advises as follows: ” To be prepared for the unusual possibility of an immigration check by US officials, we recommend that you always carry photocopies of your passport (photo, signature and expiration date pages), your visa, and I-20.”

Other documents that should come in handy for all three types of travel listed above include letter of enrolment, acceptance letter, student ID card, attested copies of academic certificates, accommodation agreement, copies of medical reports and history, certificates confirming you’ve received all the necessary vaccinations, health and travel insurance, etc.

You should also hand-carry all these documents instead of packing them into your checked luggage. This is so it will be easy to present them for inspection to the US Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry when you arrive.

The US Travel Docs Every International Student Needs

Make sure you are prepared before you leave for the United States.

An international student in an airport looking at flight schedules

Before you leave home to attend university in the United States, it is a good idea to double-check that all of your US travel docs are in order. US borders have officially reopened for immigrants and international students, but make sure you follow all health and safety protocols, including being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and carry proof of your vaccination status. Prepare for your trip to the US by reviewing our checklist of travel docs, general travel requirements, and special health restrictions related to the pandemic before leaving home.Β

What Should International Students Pack in their Carry-On Bags?Β

As an international student about to embark on your first trip to your new university in the United States, remember to pack all your essential travel- and school-related documents in your carry-on bag. Do not pack these away in your checked luggage. You will need many of these documents at customs, and you will also need them when you arrive at your university. Keep them accessible and safe.Β

It is also a good idea to pack some essentials in your carry-on bag, like a change of clothes and basic toiletries. (Make sure you follow the toiletries guidelines listed below.) Be sure to include some cash in US dollars and an electrical adapter to charge your phone in US outlets, as your luggage could get lost or delayed.Β

Keep These Docs in Your Possession as You Travel to the US

Here is a checklist of the documents you will need as an international traveler and a student entering your first year at a new university. Keep these organized and in a safe, accessible place, and never leave them unattended as you fly between airports or use other modes of transportation.Β

Passport: This one should be a no-brainer: be sure your passport is current and valid, and remember to keep it in a safe place on your person. Β

Visa: If you are a student studying in an academic or English-language program at a US university, you have an F-1 visa or visa stamp in your passport book.Β

I-20 form: Your Designated School Official (DSO) sent your I-20 to you upon acceptance into university. Make sure to bundle your I-20 with your other important travel documents.Β

Letter of Acceptance: When you pass through customs or speak with an immigration official, you may be asked to show your letter of acceptance from your university.Β

SEVIS I-901 fee receipt: Once your DSO sends your I-20, you can use the information to pay your I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee . Keep the receipt as proof of payment with your other US travel docs.Β

Customs letter and G-28 document included in your acceptance packet: Keep any customs paperwork or G-28 requirements that came in your acceptance packet with you at all times.Β

In addition, you will need to pack the original versions of the following documents, not photocopies or pictures:Β

Academic transcripts: Make sure your transcripts are in sealed envelopes that have been certified.Β

Academic certificates: These certificates document your previous educational performances and your acceptance into a US-based university.Β

English proficiency test scores: You may not need these to get through customs, but you may need to show them to your advisor at your new university in the US.Β

Bank statement: You may be asked to show how you intend to fund your educational experience in the United States.Β

What Travel Restrictions Do Students Need to Know About?Β

Now that we have gone over what you must bring, it is also important to know what not to bring! As you pack, you want to make sure you are not carrying anything that is not allowed. International air travel has precise rules regarding what you can and cannot bring with you. There are two sets of rules to be mindful of: what you are allowed to bring on a plane or other mode of transportation and what you are allowed to bring into the USA.Β

What Travel Restrictions Do Students Have to Observe?Β

Most students will be flying to the United States. We will concentrate on air travel, but if you are traveling to the US from some other form of public transportation such as a boat or car, be sure to research any additional rules you may have to follow.Β

What Can Students Bring on the Plane?Β

When flying, you have to consider what you can bring on an airplane, pack in your stowed luggage, and pack in your carry-on bag. Certain items, like medical devices and electronic cigarettes, must be brought in your carry-on luggage. Items such as sporting equipment or a corkscrew are required to be packed in your stowed luggage.

Federal law allows travelers to include up to 3.4 ounces of shampoo, lotion, or similar liquid in their carry-on bags. You must pack anything over 3.4 ounces (100.55 ml) in your checked luggage. If you have questions about specific items, refer to your airline’s website, or search the Transportation Security Authority (TSA) database for packing instructions .Β

Which Items Are Not Allowed Through Customs?Β

Suppose you are coming to live in the United States for a year or more. You may be inclined to bring some items from home that you wouldn’t regularly pack for an international trip. However, before you pack fruit that you are sure to miss while studying abroad, check to see if it is allowed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).Β

Most importantly, check if you plan on bringing anything that falls into the following four categories, as they have the highest level of CBP restrictions:Β

Fruits and vegetables

Plants and cut flowers

Meat and animal products

Live animals

Most other items are determined on a case-by-case basis or are illegal, such as illicit drugs or firearms. Currently, there are no specific travel restrictions for students from countries such as India, China, Brazil, or Vietnam, but it is a good idea to check the U.S. Department of State website periodically to stay up to date on any travel advisories you need to know about before you leave.Β

How Much Money Can Students Bring into the United States?Β

It is much easier to access cash digitally than it used to be, but it is still a good idea to bring $250–$500 on your person or in your carry-on in case of emergencies. If you intend to carry large amounts of cash with you (e.g., more than $10,000 ), you must report the money to CBP.Β

Customs has a helpful website available for reporting the international transportation of currency .Β

Which COVID-19 Related Restrictions Do Students Need to Know About?Β

As of November 2021, the Department of Homeland Security and the US Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) require that non-US citizens must show proof of vaccination to fly to the United States . In addition to making sure your vaccinations are in order, the best advice for international students and other travelers to the United States is to monitor changes closely as your flight to the US gets closer.Β

Homeland Security’s Study in the States blog is a good resource for F-1 student visa travel announcements and changes. We also recommend you check your local US embassy website to see if there are any notifications specific to your region or country.

The US Embassy & Consulates in Brazil

The US Embassy & Consulates in China

The US Embassy & Consulates in India

The US Embassy & Consulates in Vietnam

And finally, stay in close contact with your university. Each school in the US has online resources to help students better understand their specific COVID-19 policies and precautions. Wentworth Institute of Technology , for instance, has a dedicated page for COVID-19 news and resources . At the University of Illinois Springfield health safety resource website, you can learn about the school’s COVID testing, vaccine, and quarantine policy .Β

Check Twice, and You’ll Be Fine

Sometimes it feels like there are a million things to remember before a big international trip and a million things that could go wrong. But you have made it through the application and visa processes, booked your flight, and figured out how to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study in a different country. You can handle the last step.Β

Make a checklist and have all the proper documents you need on your person, or in your carry-on bags. Check travel advisories at home and in the US. Make sure you follow the mask, vaccine, and other up-to-date requirements in airports and travel hubs. With some forethought and patience, you will enjoy a smooth trip to the United States.Β

US checklist

usa student travel checklist

The United States has the most universities and colleges of any nation, and it's home to half of the top higher-education institutes in the world 1 . Aside from providing a world-class education, universities in the US are known to be generally more inclusive and flexible, and they offer great networking opportunities.

If you're heading to the US as an international student, here's a guide to help you plan for your studies abroad * .

1. Check your passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your studies end. If you think it'll expire while you're in the US, renew it before you leave home to avoid any hassles.

If you renew your passport while in the US, you'll still need to carry your old one when you travel, because it will have your valid visa that proves your status. If you're at all in doubt of the requirements around passports and visas, visit the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.

2. Apply to study in the US, and then for a visa

Except for Canadians and citizens of Bermuda, foreigners going to school in the US will need an F-1 or M-1 student visa. But first, you need to be accepted by a US college that's certified by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

The F-1 visa is issued for longer-term studies and allows you to remain in the US as long as you're a full-time student. Both visas can be issued up to 3 months in advance, but students may only enter the country 30 days before the start of their studies. To be eligible for a US student visa, you must be enrolled full time, prove your English proficiency, and show that you have enough funds to support yourself.

In addition, you'll need to attend an interview where you'll be asked about your plans for study and stay in the US. The US government provides tips on how to prepare for the student visa interview and what documents to provide. As visa requirements can change, visit the SEVP website for up-to-date information.

3. Sort out accommodation

If you're attending a US college, you can choose between on-campus accommodation (dorms) or off-campus accommodation (private homes and homestays).

Many international students prefer student housing, at least to start with. It's an easy way to make friends, and you can't beat the proximity to your classes and the dining hall. If you're living off-campus, be prepared to pay a deposit up front, and expect that your utilities, like gas and water, will be extra. You will most likely be locked into a 12-month contract, too.

Your university's website is a good place to start when looking for student accommodation.

4. Set up your banking

You'll probably use a checking account to do most of your daily banking, including paying your bills. If you're receiving financial aid, it will most likely come as a check or be directly deposited into your account.

It can be difficult, however, for non-US residents to open a bank account, especially online: while some banks have different requirements, you'll probably be asked for proof of ID and your source of income; your address; and your Social Security Number (or Taxpayer Identification Number).

Opening an international bank account before you go abroad will be the easiest way to manage your money. With HSBC, your account details and debit and credit cards (subject to local regulations) will be ready before you leave home. If you have multiple worldwide accounts, you can manage them with one secure log on with Global View.

Learn more about opening an overseas bank account

5. Create a budget

Your university and the visa office will need proof that you can cover your living expenses while you're studying. This will actually be a condition for getting your visa approved.

Aside from your visa, tuition fees, flights and accommodation, there will be other costs to consider, such as your Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), which most private universities require.

Calculate your income and your expenses and balance this amount. You should ideally be spending less than you're making. And as things don't always go according to plan, set some aside for emergencies (and for your holidays – even students need a break).

6. Start saving

Now you know how much money you'd like to have for moving, you can set a savings goal. Is it realistic to reach this amount before you leave? If it seems like a stretch, look at any areas where you could cut back to make it more achievable.

Take a look at your financial habits. Are they costing you more than you think? Brew your own coffee, cook at home, skip the salon manicures and take public transport (or ride a bike). Common bank fees that can be avoided (or reduced) include using non-affiliated ATMs; making late credit card payments; relying on your overdraft; taking out credit card cash advances; transferring global funds; and letting your balance slip below the minimum requirement (if that's a requirement of your account).

Want to know what an international education costs and how people are saving for it? HSBC's study The Value of Education: The price of success looks into global education trends and provides practical tips for preparing for an overseas education.

7. Get a health check

You may need to have vaccinations or health checks before you enter the US. The National Travel Health Network and Center and the World Health Organization recommend that visitors be vaccinated against rabies and tetanus.

Your school may have its own requirements. Many universities require all new students to prove they've been vaccinated or are immune to certain infectious diseases, such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), pertussis and meningitis, and to be screened for tuberculosis. Some universities may even require COVID-19 vaccinations.

See the full requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and check your university's website for the most up-to-date information.

When travelling, make sure you're able to access any medication you might need and don't forget to pack extra in your carry-on bag, in case your checked baggage is delayed. If you're unsure about anything, chat to your doctor about your options, and consult your school's website for their immunisation and health insurance policies.

8. Think about travel insurance

There's no universal healthcare in the US so it's crucial that you're adequately covered. And because the healthcare is top-notch, the insurance will probably be pricey, too.

Your school may have it's own requirements regarding healthcare and might even have school-sponsored SHIP. Some SHIP policies might only cover you within a certain distance from your school so it's best to check. A good travel insurance will cover you both on-campus and off, and will give you options about which doctors you see.

Travel insurance may be able to cover you for the duration of your studies, or just the first few weeks. This may be helpful if your luggage is lost or if there are travel delays that cost you money.

9. Check that your phone is unlocked

If your phone is unlocked you'll be able to use any SIM card while studying in the US. If you forget and need to buy a phone? Unlike in the UK, where they're proposing a locked phone ban, most new phones in the US will still come locked to prevent you from switching companies.

If you buy a used phone, make sure it's unlocked or you risk being stuck with a particular carrier. Even then, there's no guarantee that your unlocked phone will work if you try to use a different carrier's SIM card. If you want to know how to unlock your phone (if you buy one while you're in the US), know that every phone company has it's own rules.

Just make sure your own phone is unlocked to avoid the unnecessary hassles.

10. Double-check all documentation

It's a good idea to scan and save your documents, including copies of your credit cards and travel documents, but carry the hard copies with you.

Make sure you travel with a valid passport and visa; proof of enrollment and funds; the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) form; the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (Form I-20); contact information for your school; and prescriptions, if any. You may also be given a social media check, so be prepared to share those details (but never your password!) with border control.

F-1 visa holders don't need to book a return ticket home but having one could make the questioning at border control go a lot smoother.

If you're ever unsure, check the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website or with your university.

One of the easiest ways to manage your money for tuition, accommodation and other expenses while studying abroad is an HSBC overseas bank account.

Safeguard Your Documents!  Make copies of all your travel documents.  Leave one copy with a trusted friend or relative and carry the other separately from your original documents.  Also take a photograph of your travel documents with your phone to have an electronic copy.

  • Passport:  Check your passport expiration dates as soon as you start planning a trip, and remember passports issued to children under 16 are only valid for only five years.  Some countries – including most of Europe – will require that your passport expiration date is at least six months away.  If you need a new passport, apply  early to allow for delays; click here for passport information.
  • Visas:  Check with the embassy of your destination regarding visa requirements.
  • Medications:  Some prescription drugs (including narcotics) and some U.S. over-the-counter medications are illegal in other countries. Check with the  embassy of your destination(s)  about regulations and documentation before you travel.
  • Consent for Travel with Minors:  If you are traveling alone with children, foreign border officials may require custody documents or notarized written consent from the other parent. Check with the  embassy of your foreign destination  before traveling to see what you may need.
  • International Driving Permit:  Many countries do not recognize a U.S. driver's license, but most accept an  International Driving Permit  (IDP). You may also need supplemental auto insurance. Read more about  driving and road safety abroad before you go.

Importance of Travel Insurance

  • The U.S. government does not provide insurance for U.S. citizens overseas. We do not pay medical bills or unexpected costs. We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance before you travel to cover emergency medical care, either as part of or separate from trip cancellation insurance.
  • Health Insurance: Medical facilities and providers abroad may require cash up front and may not accept U.S. insurance plans.  U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not provide coverage outside the United States.  Check your health care policy to see if it will cover you overseas.  If not, consider buying  supplemental insurance .  Make sure the insurance you purchase covers any special medical needs or risks you anticipate on your trip.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation:  Evacuation for medical treatment can cost more than $100,000.  You should strongly consider purchasing  medical evacuation insurance  in case of emergency overseas.

Sat / act prep online guides and tips, 10 steps to get a us student visa: full application guide.

author image

Each year, many international students apply to US schools to study full-time in the US. But to attend school in the States, you need more than just good grades β€” you need a US student visa. Unfortunately, the process for obtaining a visa can be complicated, which is why we're here to help.

In this guide, we'll go over the basics of visas and how to get a student visa to the US. We'll also give you a handful of tips and resources you can use to ensure your visa application process proceeds smoothly.

What Is a US Student Visa? Do You Need One?

In order to legally attend school in the US, all international applicants β€” that is, those without US citizenship or permanent residence β€” must first obtain a US student visa. This international student visa allows you to reside temporarily in the US in order to attend an approved school, language program, or academic exchange program.

Your student visa ends once you complete your program. At that time, you must depart the US. (However, you may later return to the US as a tourist or on another visa, such as a work visa.)

There are three types of US student visas :

  • F-1 visa : This visa is for high school or college/university (including language program) study in the US, applying to both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • M-1 visa : This visa is for nonacademic or vocational study in the US. Such programs are usually short term and career focused. For example, you could attend a culinary school or a medical training program.
  • J-1 visa : This visa is for exchange visitors, including study abroad students, scholars, interns, and au pairs.

Generally speaking, international students who wish to study full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program will need an F-1 visa. By contrast, if you're interested in studying abroad for only a semester or two at a US institution (and want to receive credits that go toward your home institution), you'll need to apply for a J-1 visa.

When Should You Apply for a US Student Visa?

You may only apply for a student visa after you’ve applied for and been accepted to an SEVP-approved school . (SEVP stands for the Student Exchange and Visitor Program. All US schools that enroll F-1 and/or M-1 students must be certified by this program.) Once you’ve secured admission to the school you wish to attend , you can begin the visa application process.

Note that you must receive your visa before your program start date. While you can receive your US student visa up to 120 days before your program start date, you may not travel to the US on this visa until 30 days before your start date.

US Student Visa Application Checklist

Before we explain how to apply for a student visa, let’s briefly go over the specific items you should have in order.

#1: Passport

Every international student must possess a valid passport issued by his or her home country. This passport must also be valid until at least six months beyond the end date of your program in the US. So any passport that will expire during your stay in the US or shortly after your program ends may not be used. Rather, you'll need to apply for a new passport and use that one instead.

Passport procedures and costs vary by country. Check your country's government website for details on obtaining or renewing a passport.

#2: Passport-Style Photograph

As part of your application, you must submit a recent (within the past six months) passport-style photograph. This will be your visa photograph, which you will later upload and submit with your online visa application.

The US visas website offers specific instructions on how to take and upload a visa photograph , as well as examples of acceptable and unacceptable photographs . Be aware that as of November 2016, glasses are no longer allowed in visa photographs.

Finally, you’ll need to have a decent sum of money on hand so that you can pay the various visa-related fees. We’ll discuss in more detail what these fees are and how to pay them later. But as a brief overview, here are the required fees for a US student visa:

  • I-901 SEVIS fee : This fee is 350 USD for F-1/M-1 students and 220  USD for J-1 students (or 35 USD for those entering short-term J-1 programs). All applicants must pay this fee.
  • Visa application fee: This fee is 160 USD. All applicants must pay this fee.
  • Visa issuance fee (if required): This fee is only required for applicants of certain nationalities. You can see whether you are required to pay a visa issuance fee by going to the US visas website.

How to Get a Student Visa: 10-Step Guide

Now that you understand the basic items you’ll need to have ready, let’s walk through how to apply for a student visa, one step at a time.

NOTE: The application process for an F-1 visa is identical to that for an M-1 visa and similar to that for a J-1 visa. As a result, the visa process described below may be used for all three types of US student visas. If you have any questions about your visa type or how to apply for one, consult the US visas website .

Step 1: Apply and Get Accepted to a US School

The first step is to apply (and eventually gain admission) to a US school. Most full-time undergraduate and graduate programs in the US require applications to be submitted by December or January each year. Schools typically send out admission notifications around March and April.

As I mentioned previously, the schools you apply to must be approved by SEVP. To find an SEVP-approved school or to confirm that the schools you've chosen are in fact certified by SEVP, use the SEVP school search tool .

J-1 students will most likely apply for exchange programs through their home institutions. You may also look for designated sponsor organizations online at the official J-1 visa website.

Want to build the best possible college application?   We can help.   PrepScholar Admissions combines world-class admissions counselors with our data-driven, proprietary admissions strategies. We've guided thousands of students to get into their top choice schools, from state colleges to the Ivy League. We know what kinds of students colleges want to admit and are driven to get you admitted to your dream schools. Learn more about PrepScholar Admissions to maximize your chance of getting in:

Step 2: Receive Form I-20 or DS-2019 From Your School

Once admitted to a school, you'll receive one of two forms: F-1 and M-1 students will receive Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status), and J-1 students will receive Form DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status).

Your school will mail the appropriate form to you. On your form will be your SEVIS ID, your school’s address, and other critical information concerning your program. You will need this form for your visa interview (we explain the interview process more in step 8) and to pay certain fees (which we discuss next in step 3).

Step 3: Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee

Once you receive your I-20 or DS-2019 form from your school, go online and pay the I-901 SEVIS fee . Once again, this fee is 350  USD for F-1/M-1 students and 220  USD for J-1 students. (Those participating in short-term J-1 visa programs will pay only 35 USD.)

Most students (except those from Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, or Nigeria) can pay this fee online by credit card. Note that the I-901 SEVIS fee is separate from your visa application fee (which we explain more in step 7).

Once you've paid this fee, print out your confirmation page, as you’ll need to bring it to your visa interview.

Step 4: Find Your Nearest US Embassy or Consulate

You must apply for your international student visa through your nearest US embassy or consulate (ideally, in the city or region in which you live). You can search for US embassies and consulates online through the US Department of State.

Be aware that US student visa processes may differ slightly depending on the embassy through which you apply. This means that at some embassies, you may need to submit additional documentation with your visa application. For more details on what you'll need to submit, go to your embassy’s official website or contact your embassy directly.

Step 5: Complete Form DS-160 Online

Next, complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, also known as Form DS-160 . To successfully fill out this form, be sure you have the following items on hand:

  • Your passport
  • A visa photograph (to upload )
  • Form I-20 or DS-2019 (remember, which form you receive depends on whether you are an F-1/M-1 or J-1 student)

In addition, you may need to supply:

  • A travel itinerary (if you’ve already made travel plans to the US)
  • The dates of your last five visits to the US (if applicable) and/or evidence of your international travel history within the past five years
  • A resume or CV
  • Additional information depending on your purpose for travel

On this application, you will also select the US embassy at which you intend to interview for your visa.

Note that you must fill out the entire form in English, except when asked to input your full name in your native alphabet. Translations are available on the form for those who have difficulty understanding the English instructions. If you have any additional questions about how to fill out this form, go to the official DS-160 FAQ page .

Once you've completed this form and submitted it online, print out your confirmation page to bring to your visa interview.

Step 6: Schedule Your Visa Interview

After you've submitted Form DS-160, contact your nearest US embassy or consulate (ideally, the one you input on your online application) to schedule your visa interview.

Wait times for interviews vary depending on the embassy. Go to the US visas website to see the wait times for your embassy .

Step 7: Pay Your Visa Application Fee

Next, pay the 160 USD application fee. This fee is the same price regardless of your country of origin and where you apply.

Note that when you pay this fee will vary depending on your embassy. Although many embassies require applicants to pay the application fee before their interviews, not all do. Your embassy should instruct you as to when and how you'll need to pay your visa application fee. If your embassy requires you to pay this fee before your interview, be sure to bring your receipt as proof of payment to your interview.

body_interview_talking

Step 8: Attend Your Visa Interview

The last big step in the visa process is the interview. This interview will be the deciding factor as to whether you will receive a US student visa or not.

Before attending your interview, gather the following items and information:

  • One copy of your visa photograph (this may be required by certain embassies, particularly if you were unable to upload your visa photograph to your online visa application)
  • Your printed DS-160 confirmation page
  • Your printed I-901 SEVIS fee confirmation page
  • Your visa application fee payment receipt (this is only required if you paid the application fee before your interview)
  • Form I-20 for F-1/M-1 students, or Form DS-2019 for J-1 students (make sure to bring the original form β€” not a copy!)

Your particular embassy may require additional forms and documentation, such as:

  • Official transcripts from colleges/universities you’ve attended
  • Diplomas/degrees from high schools/colleges/universities you've attended
  • Standardized test scores (if required by your US school)
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Proof of your intent to depart the US at the end of your program

You will undergo a security check and provide digital, ink-free fingerprints, usually right after you arrive at your interview.

During the interview, you will be asked a range of questions in English. These questions will mostly focus on why you want to study at the school you've selected and what you intend to do after the program finishes. It is important to clearly state that you do not intend to remain in the US once you complete your program. Websites such as International Student and Happy Schools offer extensive lists of sample questions you may be asked during your interview.

If your interview is successful, your embassy will then inform you when and how it will return your passport (with your new visa) to you. (To get your visa, you must leave your passport with your embassy.)

Step 9: Pay the Visa Issuance Fee (If Required)

Some students must pay a visa issuance fee once they have been approved for a US student visa. Whether this fee is required or not depends on your nationality and your country’s reciprocity agreement with the US. The US visas website offers a chart you can use to see whether you must pay a visa issuance fee.

Step 10: Receive Your Visa

Once you’ve completed all of the steps above and have received approval for an international student visa to the US, your embassy will return your passport to you with your new visa in it. Note that some embassies will require you to come in person to pick it up, whereas others will mail it directly back to you.

Visa processing times will vary depending on your embassy. You can get an estimate as to how long your visa will take to process by going to the US visas website .

What If You Are Denied a US Student Visa?

According to the US visas website, most applications for US visas are approved. That said, in rare cases, you may be denied an international student visa . This typically only happens when you fail to fulfill a certain requirement before or during your interview.

Here are some examples of problems likely to make you ineligible for a US student visa:

  • You do not provide proof of sufficient funds. This is said to be one of the main reasons students are often denied student visas to the US. Although you aren’t necessarily expected to have enough money to last you the entire duration of your program, you should possess proof of sufficient funds (in liquid assets) for at least one academic year.
  • You do not provide proof of your intent to leave the US once your program ends. The US government needs to ensure that you will not (intentionally or accidentally) overstay your visa. Therefore, you must provide adequate proof of your intent to return to your home country once you finish your program.
  • You do not pass the security check. Though this may be obvious, committing certain crimes can make you ineligible for a US visa.
  • You do not bring all required items to your interview. Failure to bring all required items, such as your passport, receipts, and official visa-related documents, may result in a visa rejection.
  • You fail to show up to your interview. If you are late to your interview or simply fail to show up, your application for a visa may be rejected.
  • You apply for a US student visa too late. Applying for your visa with too little time before your program starts will most likely make you ineligible for a student visa. This is mainly because your visa won't become available to you until after your program start date.

This list highlights some of the many reasons international students are denied US visas. If your application for a student visa is rejected, your embassy will tell you why. Unfortunately, you cannot get your money back in the case of a rejection. Moreover, embassies will not reevaluate visa applications, so if you are rejected, you must repeat the process above in order to reapply for a student visa.

In the end, visa rejections are not common. As long as you do everything you need to do and follow the steps we've given you, you should have no problem obtaining a US student visa!

3 Tips for Ensuring a Smooth Visa Application Process

You now know how to get a student visa β€” but how can you make sure you won't face any problems along the way? Follow our three tips below to ensure that your visa application process proceeds without hassle.

#1: Start Early

Applying for your visa with too little time before your program starts will most likely result in a visa rejection, so try to apply for a student visa as soon as you are accepted and have received Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 from your school.

If you are applying to multiple US schools, I recommend waiting to apply for a visa until you have received admission notifications from all of your schools, or until you have received an acceptance to your top-choice school. Doing this allows you to weigh your options and choose the best school for you.

body_wing_airplane

#2: Don’t Buy a Plane Ticket Until You Have Your Visa

Although it’s a good idea to start the student visa application process early, it's best not to buy any plane tickets until after you've received your visa since there's no guarantee that your application will be approved.

If you purchase a plane ticket ahead of time and are then rejected for a US student visa, you will most likely not receive a full refund for your airfare. (Refund policies vary depending on the airline, but usually you cannot get a full refund if you cancel more than 24 hours after booking a flight.)

#3: Contact Your Embassy If You Have Questions

The visa application process described above is the general process for securing an F-1, M-1, or J-1 international student visa to the US. That said, you may find that your visa process differs slightly from the steps described above. Usually, this is due to differences in how US embassies choose to handle or process certain information.

As a result, always direct any questions or concerns you have about the visa process to your closest embassy. Your embassy is hands down the best resource for questions about fees, the interview, and other visa-related matters.

Additional Resources for International Students

If you want clarification or extra guidance on certain aspects of the US visa application process, here are a few official resources we recommend using:

  • US Visas Official Website : This website is an official government website that covers everything you need to know about student visas, including how to apply for them, what kinds of visa policies there are, etc. Some excellent pages to look at if you have questions are the US visa FAQ and the visa fees pages.
  • Study in the States : This official government website is run by the US Department of Homeland Security. By clicking on the β€œStudents” tab at the top of the page, you’ll get tons of information on how to apply for a student visa, how to prepare for your arrival, and how to maintain your F-1 or M-1 visa status. You can also get the rundown of all of the major student forms you’ll need to fill out for your US student visa.
  • Education USA : This government website run by the US Department of State helps international students navigate possible US schools, funding options , the visa application process, and more.
  • J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program : The J-1 visa can be a little confusing for students, as it applies to non-students as well. Use this website to learn more about what the J-1 visa entails and how you can apply for one .

Recap: How to Get a Student Visa

All international students who want to study in the US must first obtain an international student visa. The three main visa types for international students are the F-1 visa, the M-1 visa, and the J-1 visa. Students who intend to study full-time in a US undergraduate or graduate program will most likely apply for an F-1 visa.

Before you begin your visa application, you'll need to have a passport that's valid for at least six months beyond your program end date, a digital copy of a passport-style photograph, and money for application fees.

Our 10-step guide above explains how to apply for a student visa to the US. To reiterate, here are the steps you'll need to take:

  • Apply and get accepted to a US school
  • Receive Form I-20 (for F-1/M-1 students) or Form DS-2019 (for J-1 students) from your school
  • Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee online
  • Locate your nearest US embassy or consulate
  • Submit Form DS-160 (the online visa application)
  • Contact your embassy to schedule your visa interview
  • Pay the visa application fee (whether you pay this fee before or after your interview depends on the embassy)
  • Attend your visa interview
  • Pay the visa issuance fee (if required)
  • Receive your visa from your embassy

Finally, our top tips for ensuring a smooth visa application process are as follows:

  • Start the process early to reduce the risk of having your application rejected
  • Avoid purchasing any airfare until after you’ve been approved for a US student visa
  • Contact your embassy with any questions or concerns

10 Essential Travel Documents for International Students [Checklist]

usa student travel checklist

Our checklist of travel documents for international students will help keep you organized

Packing for your trip to the United States is exciting. After all of the work you have done to get accepted at a U.S. university, it is finally time to prepare for the trip. In your excitement, it would be easy to forget some of the essential documents you will need at your point of entry or during your time in school. This travel documents checklist for international students will ensure you have all your academic and required travel documents in one place.

1. PassportΒ  At the top of the list of travel documents for international students is, of course, your passport. Keep your passport near you at all times. You will need it to board your plane and get through customs in the United States. Once you have arrived, you will use your passport to prove your age and identity.

2. Flight DocumentsΒ  You will need your airline tickets to get through security checkpoints and board the plane. Keep a paper copy of your flight itinerary as well. Do not rely solely on your mobile phone to store these important documents in case the battery drains during a long flight.

3. Student VisaΒ  You will need to show your student visa at your point of entry. Keep it with your passport.

4. Form I-20Β  Keep yourΒ  Form I-20 Β with your passport also. You will need the original, signed copy to show the customs officer at your point of entry.

5. Admissions LetterΒ  Officials at your point of entry may also ask to see your admissions letter to prove your destination. Keep a copy with your passport.

6. Health InsuranceΒ  Documents Although you hope you will not need to use your medical insurance documents during your time in the United States, you should bring them with you.

7. Medical RecordsΒ  Bring copies of your medical records in case you need to see a doctor while you are in the United States.

8. PrescriptionsΒ  This might be one of those travel documents for international students that you might not think of. And you would not be alone is forgetting your paper prescription. If you take any prescription medication, you should bring a copy of the prescription to show customs officials. A prescription proves that the medicine belongs to you and that it was lawfully prescribed.

9. Academic DocumentsΒ  Pack copies of transcripts, class schedules and other academic documents. Although your university should have these documents available, you will save time by bringing your own copies.

10. Contact ListΒ  This list should include contacts in the U.S. and your home country who can help you if travel plans change or if you encounter an emergency. Include contact information for the international office at your college as well as your counselor, your family and anyone you know in the United States.

More Helpful Hints About Your Travel Documents

Your travel documents are the most important items you willΒ  pack for your trip to the United States. Remember, you can buy many of the things you need when you arrive, but you must have original copies of these documents to enter the country and start your first year of college.

β€’ You should carry originals of all of these documents in a personal bag or wallet that stays with you at all times. Do not pack travel documents in your checked bags. You will need to be able to access most of them during your trip.

β€’ Make photocopies of all documents and pack the photocopies in a different bag from the originals. That way, if one of your bags is lost or stolen, you can more easily replace these essential documents.

A Large Suitcase

packing list study abroad

Item 1: A Passport

Your passport is the ticket to your dream study abroad destination. Don’t forget it and certainly don’t lose it. Actually, it’s a good idea to make a photocopy of your passport just in case the original gets lost or stolen.

Tip : If you do lose your passport, the U .S. consulate can help you get a new one, but photocopies of the original make the process much easier.

study abroad passport and photo copy

Item 2: Requisite Visa

You may need a visa, too, d epending on the country you’re visiting. As with your passport, it’s a really good idea to have a photocopy of your original visa in case something happens. Better safe than sorry!

Item 3: Power Adapters and Converters

Each country has its own kind of power outlet and adapter, and there’s a good chance your home chargers won’t work. With most essential items (phones, laptops, etc.) being electronic, you don’t want to run out of power!

Verify which plugs and voltage are used in the country (or countries) you’ll be visiting, and purchase the necessary adapters and/or converters in advance of your trip so you don’t risk running out of power. Being without Google Maps in a new country? No thank you! Powered-up tech is a critical study abroad essential.

Item 4: Prescription Medications

If you take prescription medications, make sure you have enough with you to cover the length of your trip. Most doctors will be able to help you get the amount you need.

If ther e’s a chance you run out while abroad, be sure to have a copy of your prescription to show local doctors. Also, remember to pack any medication in your carry-on, just in case your luggage gets delayed or lost in transit.

Item 5: Currency

Nowadays, many U.S. banks make it easy to convert to foreign currencies with a credit or debit card. Still, it’s always a good idea to carry petty cash with you in the event of an emergency. You can never be too prepared!

foreign currency exchange for students on study abroad

Item 6: Comfortable Walking Shoes

Travel ing to a new city means you’ll be doing lots of walking! Wherever you go, you’ll likely be spending the majority of your time commuting or exploring on foot, so be sure to invest in high-quality walking shoes that can withstand all-day wear and tear. Aim for comfort and avoid flip flops (trust us on this).

EXPLORE PROGRAMS

Item 7: Essential (Travel-Size) Toiletries

Some toiletries are more essential than others. While you can probably buy most essentials in the country you’re traveling to, it’s best to have some with you so you don’t have to worry about the basics, like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste to cover you during your first few days abroad.

Tip : Stick to travel-size toiletries. Large bottles of your favorite shampoo will take up too much real estate in your suitcase. Save that precious space for the souvenirs you’ll want to bring home with you.

Item 8: Your School Supplies

Most students take notes on laptops or tablets, but we advise you still bring an extra notebook and pencil or pen just in case. Or, if you do like taking notes by hand, be sure to bring your favorite school supplies with you!

Though foreign countries will have these on hand, it’s easier –  and sometimes cheaper – to bring them with you. Adding a few traditional school supplies to your study abroad packing checklist now means you’ll save your spending money for the fun stuff later.

Item 9: Face Masks

Travel is back on, but COVID has not yet backed down completely. Check the mask mandates of the countries you’ll be visiting. Even if masks aren’t required, it’s always a good idea to bring a few with you just in case. The same goes for hand sanitizer. No one wants to spend their study abroad sick. Stay healthy!

Check out CIEE’s Health, Safety & Security Page for more information!

Item 10: A Large Suitcase

We hinted at this earlier, but brin g a suitcase with extra room (make that extra, extra room) . Or, consider bringing an empty suitcase. No doubt, you will find more than a few treasures you’ll want to buy and bring home with you. Make sure you have the space to accommodate souvenirs!

Bonus Tip: Your CIEE Study Abroad Program Contacts

Last but not least, make sure you have quick access to all your program contacts, including names, numbers, and the street address of your CIEE study center. It’s often helpful to keep your street address written in the local language for taxis or in case you get lost. We recommend having this information stored in your phone and on a hard copy somewhere.

usa student travel checklist

When it comes to studying abroad, most students choose to study in the United States. Because of the diverse and extensive range of courses available to overseas students, the American education system is widely regarded as the most adaptable in the world. For most Indian students, studying in the United States (USA) is a dream come true.

However, once all of the processes for studying in the United States have been completed, such as obtaining admission to the university, organising finances to support your studies in the United States, obtaining Visa permission, and so on, the next most important action is your trip packing checklist .

Because you want to stay in the United States for an extended period, most students maintain practically everything that has been a part of their routine. Being aware of what you bring to the United States is critical since gettingΒ  your possessions is one of the best methods to reduce your daily spending. Having your own luggage will help you save money on living expenses while in the United States but at the same time, it’s equally essential to ensure that you travel light. This article will provide you with the definitive packing checklist for any student planning to study in the United States and tips on how to travel light at the same time.\

Research Before You Start Packing for USA

Before you start packing for your studies in the USA, it’s essential to research the climate and weather conditions in the region where you will be studying. The USA has a diverse range of climates, and the weather conditions can vary significantly from one region to another. The weather change will be especially different for Indian students in USA.

By researching your destination’s climate and weather conditions, you can pack appropriate clothing and footwear that will keep you comfortable throughout the year.Β

Understanding the climate and weather patterns in your US city

Different regions in the United States experience various climate and weather patterns. The West Coast, for example, tends to have a more temperate and Mediterranean-like climate, while the Midwest can have distinct seasons with cold winters and hot summers. The East Coast might experience more humid conditions and varying temperatures throughout the year.

It’s important to look at factors such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, and wind patterns to understand the climate of a specific city. Websites and apps that provide historical weather data can help you get a sense of the typical conditions in your city.

Seasonal variations and how they influence your clothing choices

  • Spring (March to May): In spring, temperatures start to rise after the cold winter. You’ll want to transition from heavy winter clothing to lighter layers. Long-sleeve shirts, light sweaters, and jackets are good choices. As the weather warms up, you can switch to short-sleeve shirts, dresses, and lighter pants.
  • Summer (June to August): Summers can get quite hot in many parts of the US. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and dresses are common choices. Light and breathable fabrics like cotton are ideal to stay cool. Don’t forget sun protection, such as hats and sunscreen.
  • Fall (September to November): Fall often brings cooler temperatures. You’ll want to reintroduce layers and slightly heavier clothing. Sweaters, cardigans, and light jackets are great options. Jeans or pants paired with long-sleeve shirts are also popular during this season.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter calls for warm and insulated clothing. Coats, scarves, gloves, and thicker sweaters are essential to stay comfortable. Depending on the severity of winter, you might also need heavier boots and accessories to protect against the cold.

Remember that clothing choices can vary based on your personal comfort level, local fashion trends, and specific weather conditions. It’s also a good idea to check weather forecasts regularly so you can plan your outfits accordingly.

Check the baggage allowance and restrictions of your airline

Before you start packing, it’s important to check your airline’s baggage allowance and restrictions. Airlines have specific guidelines regarding the size, weight, and number of bags you can carry; exceeding these limits can result in additional charges.

Make sure to read your airline’s baggage policy carefully and pack accordingly. If you need to bring more items, consider shipping them separately or leaving them behind and purchasing them upon arrival.

Make a packing list for USA

Making a packing list is an essential step in packing efficiently for your studies in the USA. It will help you stay organized and ensure you remember all essential items. Your packing list should include all the items you need for your studies, including clothing, electronics, school supplies, and personal care items.

Select Luggage Bag

It is important to select a suitable luggage bag that can accommodate all of the stuff you intend to bring with you to the new nation. Try to choose a travel bag that is large enough to hold all your needs while still being easy to carry. Check that it is adaptable and easy to move about. A four-wheeled stroller bag is ideal since it takes the weight off your hands. If you prefer to carry a backpack, ensure it has wheels for hands-free mobility.

Prepare a Checklist Before packing for the USA

Before developing a packing list for Indian students travelling abroad to the USA, make a note of all the necessary materials. This guarantees that nothing is overlooked and aids in improved planning and organization. Remember that if you travel to another country to study, you will most likely be unable to return home until the conclusion of the semester.Β

In most nations, this phase lasts 4 to 5 months. As a result, losing any key document or item might impede an otherwise simple changeover.

Refer to the following checklist for tips on packing light for study abroad:

  • Upload all critical papers and photographs to the cloud.
  • Save vital information and contact information to Google Drive.
  • Make arrangements for airport pickups and drop-offs ahead of time.
  • Examine the luggage weight limits of the airline service you intend to use.
  • Add a name tag or a mark/symbol to your baggage to make it more recognisable.

Carry-on and checked-in baggage items

To prevent a snarl at the airport, it is critical to understand what goods should be retained in carry-on luggage and what should be placed in checked-in luggage. Indian students travelling to the USA should bring the following goods in their carry-on luggage:

  • Documents of importance
  • The currency of the host country
  • Prescription drugs
  • Phone, charger, and other accessories
  • The remaining goods should be packed in checked luggage.

Clothes and Accessories for the USA

Many students who migrate to the United States for higher education know that one can never have too much clothing. However, cutting back on purchasing additional garments will benefit you greatly if you have a restricted budget. As a result, below is a simple list of key necessary wardrobe items that every student must bring to the United States.Β

Research the temperature and culture of the nation you travel to, and prepare your clothes accordingly. Pack warm thermal clothes if you are moving to nations such as the United States, Canada, and others since they have chilly weather. Still, East Asian and African countries have milder temperatures. Don’t overpack, and bring only the essentials. For Indian students travelling to the USA, refer to this guide to better understand what clothes to bring for study abroad destinations in 2023

List of some essential items:

  • Thermal T-shirts  – 8
  • Sweatshirts – 3-4
  • Jeans (stick to blue/black) – 6-7
  • Formal shirts – 3
  • Formal trousers – 2
  • Thermal Undergarments – at least 15 pairs (very important)
  • Formal suit – 1 complete set
  • Shorts/three-fourths – 5-6
  • Track pants – 2-3
  • Swimming trunks – 1 (if you plan to swim after coming here)
  • One traditional dress for festivals
  • A trench coat/ winter jacket – 2Β
  • Gloves, caps, socks – 5-7 pairs

Double check your Documents

With the new wave of changed immigration regulations going into effect, it is always prudent to have the necessary documentation for travel to the United States . Here is a list of important papers that all students planning to study in the United States should bring with them to prevent issues throughout their stay. One of the most crucial things to learn before visiting America is how to read the paperwork.

Also, save replica reproductions of these documents in case the original is lost or stolen. This simplifies the procedure of obtaining replacements from the immigration office if the original is lost or stolen.Β

This includes the following:

  • Xerox Passport (5 copies)
  • Xerox VISA (5 copies)
  • The I-20 (5 copies)
  • Airline Ticket (2 copies)
  • Original mark sheets including a diploma (previous degree)
  • Degree Certificate + Attested Mark Sheets (3 copies)
  • Original transcripts including a diploma (3 copies)
  • Form of immunization (specific to university)
  • University-specific letters, such as admit, assistance, and forms.
  • Receipt of SEVIS fees (3 copies)
  • GRE Xerox copies + originals (5 copies)
  • Original TOEFL + Xerox copies (5 copies)
  • Copies of the Final Year Project Report Syllabus
  • Letters of recommendation

Prescription Drugs: Carrying medicines to the USA from India

If you are taking prescription medication, bring enough to last the duration of your stay if feasible. This is because it is unknown whether the drug you require is accessible in the nation. Keep the doctor’s prescription on hand in case you run out of doses.

You should also take some basic medications, such as those for headaches, colds, and coughs. Just be sure the brand you’re using is legal in the country you’re relocating to. Some of the medications that should be packed by Indian students travelling to the USA include:

  • Crocin for ColdΒ
  • Fever, Body Pain – CombiflamΒ
  • Indigestion, Gastric Problems – Gelucil, Zantac
  • Throat Infection – ErythromycinΒ
  • Allergies – Avil.25Β
  • Vomiting – AvomineΒ
  • Tooth Pain – CombiflamΒ
  • Cold, Headache – AmurtanjanΒ
  • Stomach Pain – CyclopamΒ
  • Diarrhoea – LopomideΒ
  • Dizziness – Diziron
  • Common Cold – Coldact, Vicks VaporubΒ
  • Sprain – Esgypyrin

Necessary medicines for traveling

Local currency

Visa and MasterCard are now accepted all around the world. Still, it’s a good idea to keep some local cash on hand, just in case. This might be done through airport kiosks, foreign currency counters, and private money exchange companies. Foreign currency cards and traveller’s checks are also available for foreign currency transactions.

Electronic gadgets

Electronic items such as cell phones and laptop computers are also considered necessities these days. However, there is a good chance that your dormitory, residence hall, or apartment outlets will differ from those in your country. As a result, it is recommended that you bring a universal converter from your own country in case you cannot locate one in the other nation.Β

The following is a list of necessary electrical gadgets that Indian students travelling overseas to the USA should include in their packing list:

  • Cell PhoneΒ
  • Outlet AdaptorsΒ
  • USB CablesΒ
  • Other Chargers

Mobile applications for indian students studying abroad in the USA

Electronic devices for traveling

Applications for Mobile Devices

It is a well-known truth that mobile applications make life easier in the modern day. Although you won’t really β€œpack” them, they will help you adapt from one nation to another. Maps, translators, cab services, food applications, lodging services, dictionaries for translators to comprehend the local language, and so forth are among the most vital.

Research to find out which applications are popular in the nation you intend to visit. Installing messaging programmes such as Whatsapp, Skype, and others is critical so that you may communicate with your relatives in your home country for free.

Personal Care Products That Are Required

Recognising the significance of personal cleanliness, especially while studying abroad is critical. Many first-time students who have never travelled outside of the nation may be taken aback by western ideals of cleanliness. Furthermore, many brands accessible in India may not be available in the United States, and vice versa. As a result, bringing personal care items that have become a part of your routine when travelling to the United States is usually preferable.

Here is a list of personal care items that all students should bring while travelling to the United States. Toothpaste comes in a huge tube. Colgate, Close-Up, etc.

  • Toothbrushes- 3-4
  • Bars of soap- 1-2/3 bottles of shower gel

Again, they are available in the United States. Dove, Palmolive, and Pears are also available in the United States. If you are unfamiliar with any of these brands, you should become acquainted with them. It’s pointless to bring a large number of soap bars from India.

  • 1 bottle of shampoo Shaving razors (for men) – a pair of disposables
  • 1 tiny can of shaving foam (do not purchase cream)
  • 1 bottle of cold cream
  • 1 bottle Vaseline
  • Clean combs – 2-3 comb cleaners/old toothbrushes for cleaning.
  • 2 soap cases – 2 bottles of hair oil
  • 1 can deodorant
  • 2 Earbuds – 1 small box Nail cutter
  • 1 bottle of sunscreen
  • 2 tubes of lip balm

Study Accessories for Students

Smaller details that we sometimes overlook are significant in any larger process. The same may be true for stationery products purchased while studying in the United States. Do you recall how losing a little marker was never a cause for concern for you in India? That will not work after you arrive in the United States for further education.

Any expenditures incurred from the education loan amount are charged with interest to students who want to study in the United States with the assistance of an education loan. As a result, bringing the stationery items listed below will benefit you in the long run throughout your studies in the United States.

  • Notebooks – 2-3
  • Pencils – 3-4
  • Erasers – 3
  • Sharpeners – 3
  • Key chains – 2
  • Staple machine – 1
  • Pins – 2 boxes
  • Glue sticks – 2
  • Markers – 2
  • Highlighters – 1
  • Small ruler – 1

Maximizing Space with Smart Packing Techniques

Maximizing space while packing is essential, whether you’re going to study abroad. Here are some smart packing techniques using folding, rolling, and packing cubes to help you make the most of your luggage space:

Tips for efficient packing using folding, rolling, and packing cubes

  • Minimize Wrinkles: Fold your clothes neatly to reduce wrinkles. Lay them flat and smooth out any wrinkles before folding.
  • Space Efficiency: Rolling clothes creates cylindrical shapes that can be packed more tightly than flat-folded items.
  • Roll Heavy Items: Roll bulkier items like jeans, sweaters, and jackets to save space and reduce wrinkles.
  • Compress Clothes: Packing cubes often come with compression zippers that help squeeze out excess air, reducing the volume of your clothes.
  • Layering: Place heavier items at the bottom of your luggage and lighter items on top to distribute weight evenly and prevent delicate items from getting crushed.
  • Utilize Shoes: Fill your shoes with socks, underwear, or small accessories to use every available space.

What Food Items Should Indian Students carry to the USA from India?

The following list contains information on the food items to carry to the USA from India. When it comes to Indian cuisine, there is no such thing as a single dish. You may have noticed many students bringing wonderful treats from home when visiting the United States.

The list of ingredients and meals below may be useful for Indian students and working professionals who prefer eating homemade Indian recipes over eating out. However, remember that US immigration restrictions only allow specific foods on flights. The food products included in the list below that are permitted to be brought into the United States from India must be packaged in the amounts specified.

Indian grocery list checklist:

  • Ready-to-eat paste: 5-6 bottles.
  • 3-4 kg rice for initial usage
  • Maggi: Maggi is a brand solely available in Indian markets. If you are picky about this brand, you should carry at least 10-12 packets. Maggi is only available at Indian grocery stores in the United States. So bring whatever you can.
  • Some handmade confections for oneself
  • 3-4 bottles of pickles
  • Curry powders in general: Chili, Garam Masala, Rasam, Sambar, Asafoetida, and other spices you may need when studying abroad – 0.5–1 kilogramme a piece
  • Legumes (whichever you prefer, mainly for lentil-based curries) – each weighing 2 kilogrammes
  • 0.5 kilograms each of salt and sugar
  • 2-3 packets of papads
  • 1 kg tamarind
  • 2 bottles of ginger-garlic paste

Plan, Plan and Plan! Most American airline companies have a standard baggage weight limit of two pieces of luggage weighing no more than 23 kg each. As a result, you must also ensure that you are not carrying excess baggage while completing this baggage requirement. Making a packing list might be a daunting undertaking. Concentrate on why you want to study abroad and plan accordingly. All you have to do is make a detailed list and ensure nothing important is omitted.

Top 5 Things Indian Students should not to carry while travelling to the USA from India

It’s also important to know what to avoid while making a packing list for Indian students travelling abroad to the USA. Here is a list of some of these items:

  • Bottled Heavy Liquids – Do not bring large bottles of hand sanitiser, shampoo, or other liquids with you. A small amount will last you a week.
  • Culturally Inappropriate Clothing- It is essential to carry clothing appropriate for the country you are migrating to. Remember that you will spend most of your time at university or college. Pack in accordance with your university’s or department’s culture. Some establishments, for example, have strict dress codes but others allow students to dress casually.
  • Books- Books add weight and space to your baggage, and you’re unlikely to read them more than once. You may also purchase them in the host country or borrow them from the library. As a result, packing books in your luggage is not advised.
  • Food or Snacks- While carrying some snacks for the journey is a good idea, packing for a month or more will only add weight and take up space that might be utilized for something more important. Instead of bringing snacks, consider learning about the host country’s cuisine and immersing yourself in their culture.
  • Expensive items- Laptop computers and mobile phones should be included in the packing list for Indian students travelling to the USA. Jewellery and other expensive items should be avoided. During the cruise, these may be broken or stolen.

Traveling abroad can be stressful and hectic, especially as a student because you are going to leave your country for at least a year. That’s not a short time. For that you will have to pack a lot of things. Here are some frequently asked questions that may be of help.

What things should you not carry while travelling to USA from India?

Because you only have a set weight limit, packing only the necessities and packing light is key. When travelling overseas, be smart and eliminate unneeded devices, bedding goods, inappropriate apparel and footwear, books (choose e-books), and so on.

How many luggage bags can Indian students carry to the USA on overseas flights from India?

Students are permitted to bring 2 to 3 pieces of luggage weighing 23 kgs apiece on overseas flights. Some airlines may provide additional luggage allowance to students flying overseas.

W hat clothes to pack for university in the USA?

Jeans, trousers, t-shirts, jackets, shirts, and sweatshirts are casual clothing. Even sports gear is acceptable in some situations. Even in informal situations, one is expected to wear nice, clean, and pressed clothes. While attending lectures, it is recommended that you dress comfortably.

Is 23 kg Baggage enough for International students?

Since there are severe restrictions on how much weight a student may carry, choosing the correct luggage is crucial. The typical weight allowance for a student is between 40 and 46 kg, which should be split into two bags weighing 23 kg each.

What is not allowed in airplane luggage?

All knives and safety razors (including pocket knives and Swiss Army knives) are forbidden, as are firearms, ammo, and pyrotechnics. Straight razors and their replacement blades are also prohibited. The majority of tools also cannot be stowed in carry-on luggage due to their potential for injury.

As a student preparing to travel overseas for further education, knowing what to carry in your suitcase is critical. It is critical for Indian students moving to the USA to plan ahead of time and create a packing list.

If your study duration is very brief, you may need to pack less carefully. Suppose you are preparing for a longer trip. In that case, you must be careful and diligent in packing.

US travel checklist

Since you are here, reading this page, it is obvious to assume that your American dream has come true! Securing a seat in an American university is a big feat and your excitement about the impending study abroad journey must be at an all-time high.Β  So, with you moving to the US for higher education, you are likely to stay there for a couple of years, for your course completion as well as for pursuing a job later. That said, it is wise to create a US travel checklist so that you carry all the essentials with you.

If you think packing bags is child’s play; it isn’t! Without a proper US travel checklist, you might miss out on something crucial while packing and feel exasperated in the new location amidst unknown people. In order to avoid any last-minute franticness, here’s a crisp blog by MSM Unify entailing all the crucial things to take from India to the USA. So, read on for the essential travel things list!

Documents to Carry to the USAΒ

The first aspect to make it to our blog on the US travel checklist is the list of critical documents without which you can be denied entry to the country!Β

So, here’s a list of documents you should arrange for and keep themes safely in a folder. Ensure that you have this folder handy as you would need to present these documents to the US immigration officers.

  • Valid passport
  • Student visa
  • Air tickets
  • Unconditional acceptance letter from the US university
  • University-mandated forms and documents
  • Original academic transcripts
  • Final year project report/ thesis
  • Standardized entrance exam score sheets, such as GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.
  • SEVIS Fee receipt ( proof of payment for the I-901 SEVIS Fee at the US embassy)
  • Form I-20 ( a document certifying your admission and financial support for U.S. studies)
  • Vaccination record
  • LoR ( Letter of Recommendation )
  • SOP (Statement of Purpose), etc.

Please note: For the exact list of documents please refer to the US immigration website. Also, make sure you have a pen and passport-size pictures in your folder. Furthermore, it is a good practice to carry photocopies of all these crucial documents in a separate folder.

USA Travel Checklist

In this section, we will focus on all the other essential things you can carry with you to the USA. The following sections will primarily cover the following four checklists in detail.

  • Travel checklist
  • Wellness checklist
  • Clothing/ accessories checklist
  • Food/ cooking checklist

1. Travel checklist

Your travel checklist for the US will include all the essentials that you would need to keep handy while you are traveling to the USA from India. It includes essential items like your air ticket, passport, student visa, other important documents, payment cards, electronic gadgets, chargers, and adapters. Keep all these things separately in a small handbag.

Also, carry loose US currency (not more than 1000 USD) in separate denominations to make quick payments while traveling. Carry most of your money on Forex cards as they are cost-effective. Also, for making any payments to the university, it is best to wire the money directly.

Additionally, here’s a list of gadgets for your reference. You may add to the list according to your need.

Please remember that the CBP officer at the port of entry decides whether to admit non-immigrants into the United States. The facts and circumstances presented at the time you apply to enter are the basis of this decision. HU cannot guarantee that CBP will admit or re-admit you into the United States.

usa student travel checklist

  • Current Passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of your entry
  • Valid F-1 Visa  (not expired)
  • Travel signature from DSO located on page 2 of your I-20. Signatures are valid for 12 months (6 months while on OPT). If you need a new signature, you can request one HERE
  • Financial Info  showing proof of funds to cover tuition & living expenses (recommended)
  • Enrollment Verification Letter (not needed while on OPT)
  • Resources: For students returning to the United States, make sure to view the  Requirements for Air Travelers to the U.S.  and  International Travel Requirements and Recommendations

usa student travel checklist

  • EAD Card
  • Employment Verification Letter  (this can be obtained from your boss or your HR department)
  • Recent paystubs

usa student travel checklist

  • COS: If you depart the United States with a pending COS, you have abandoned your application. Additionally, CBP may also consider you ineligible to return to the United States as an F-1 student because your application to change status to that of a permanent resident is evidence of intent to immigrate, which is inconsistent with nonimmigrant student status.
  • USCIS may request more information (RFE) while you are abroad. This information can only be sent to a US address and if you are abroad, you will likely miss an important deadline
  • If your OPT is approved while you are outside of the US, you would need to show your EAD card upon re-entry. Your EAD card can only be sent to a US address
  • It is not an option to exit the US and re-enter as a tourist if your OPT has not yet been approved. This will violate your F-1 status and you will lose your OPT benefit

Stationery

Smaller things which we generally tend to ignore often play an important role in any bigger process. The same can be said in the case of stationery items in the process of study in the USA.  Do you remember all those times when losing a small marker was never a worrisome event for you in India? That won’t work once you reach the USA for further studies.

Any expenses that are being utilized from the education loan amount are charged with interest to students who plan to study in the USA with the help of an education loan. Hence, carrying the stationery items mentioned in the following list will help you in the long term during your study in the USA.

  • Pens – 3-4

Foreign Currency

Though payment cards like International Debit and Credit cards are accepted worldwide, carrying local currency like 1000 or 2000 USD is a good idea to meet travel expenses. Get the local currency by visiting foreign exchange centers or currency exchange offices. Carry forex cards in the US to pay grocery bills, shopping bills, etc.

Carry about USD 1,000 (INR 83,300)  in the currency more or less, and the rest can be taken in loaded forex cards. Remember to always carry loose change that you can use for eating/drinking during your travel journey. Forex cards are cost-effective so make sure to carry most of your money on these cards. For tuition fees, it is best to wire the money directly to the university.

However, you must be completely aware of your "Essentials" checklist, more precisely your USA student packing list, before you go on your eagerly awaited travel to study there!

To ensure that everything is set up and prepared, you have a lot of things to take care of. This article has created an all-important checklist with items to bring to the United States for Indian students to help you.

There are many items to carry from India to the United States while going to study. All of these items are listed in the various packing lists for US students that are shown below:

Let's take a closer look at the list of things to bring for Indian students travelling to the USA:

Travel Checklist

When packing necessary items for your trip from India to the United States, a student packing list for the country is the most crucial travel checklist.

Your plane tickets, passport, credit cards, and student visa permission are the items you must have when travelling to the US.

  • Passport: You'll need your passport to prove your identity when you enter the US.
  • Payment Cards: When arriving in the US, you will first require a credit or debit card to pay for basics and utility services. Particularly well-liked payment options in the United States include Mastercard, Visa, and American Express.

  • Carry no more than 1,000 USD in actual currency; the remaining sum can be transported on loaded foreign exchange cards. Remember always to take a loose change for eating and drinking while travelling.
  • Because they are inexpensive, carry most of your cash on Forex cards.
  • It is recommended to wire the money straight to the university for tuition.

  • Additional batteries
  • a desk clock
  • HDD external, and so on.

Health Checklist

Let us now assist you with a few health-related items that you must put on your India to USA student travel checklist.

The following items should be on your packing list as a student from India travelling to the US:

  • Health Insurance: A visit to the emergency room typically costs 700 USD, and additional expenses like testing or prescriptions can quickly bring that figure well above 1,000 USD. All international universities require student health insurance. Instead of acquiring it from your university, you can get this from any insurance company in India at a lower price.
  • Health Examination: Before you depart, be sure to have a complete health examination performed. The cost of treatments, particularly eye and dental care, can be high in the US.
  • Cold, fever and cough medications include Crocin, Combiflam, Diziron, Vicks, Avail.25, etc.
  • lenses for the eyes

Clothing Checklist

The following is a list of clothing to bring for students travelling to the USA:

  • Bring winter, summer, and fall apparel for the state's weather.
  • Bring your toiletries.
  • Carry additional pillows and blankets if you can't live without them. But watch out for going over your luggage allowance.

Food Checklist

Now that we've got that out of the way, here are some necessities for your student packing list for the USA in terms of food:

  • Masala, packaged spices, and oils are permitted imports into the US, according to the US Customs and Border Protection website. So yes, you may import spices from India to the United States.
  • Prepared meals: You can bring prepared foods into the US (such as Maggi and pickles) in case of crises.
  • Three to a seven-litre pressure cooker.
  • Using rice, forks, knives, bowls, veggies, dal, and other items are generally forbidden and unnecessary. These might be discovered abroad as well.

Guidelines for Students Traveling to the US Regarding Luggage

After learning about the packing list for Indian students travelling to the USA, it's crucial to be informed about the criteria for and guidelines for luggage:

  • Each check-in bag's total linear dimensions shouldn't be at most 158 cm (62 inches). The combined weight cannot exceed 23 kg (50 pounds).
  • A laptop, briefcase, and purse are also permitted in addition to one piece of hand luggage. There should be a restriction on the maximum weight of hand luggage, often 5 to 10 kilograms.
  • Transportation Security Administration should be purchased.
  • Make sure you have travel insurance that protects you from baggage loss and catastrophes. You can get this service from an Indian insurance company.

You can feel comfortable that your necessities are in order and won't change now that you have them all.

Before starting your mission, all the items above must be checked.

Once they are, remember to inform yourself of any new paperwork or reports your preferred university may need.
