Undoubtedly one of America’s greatest music cities, Memphis  has a rich heritage that birthed rock ‘n’ roll and its own version of soul and the blues.

The vibrant and culturally diverse hub has recently seen many of its storied neighborhoods spring back to life through regeneration efforts. Where once stood empty warehouses, now you’ll find a crisp batch of independent stores and restaurants, serving up new takes on Memphis’ legendary food scene. Though widely known as one of America’s great capitals of barbecue, the past two decades have seen Memphis grow into its culinary own beyond the smoker.

The city’s laid-back and open-minded attitude means there isn’t a strict rulebook to follow, but there are a few things to know before visiting the Bluff City.

A man smiles at the camera and gives a two-finger peace sign

1. The Memphis dress code is whatever you want

Memphis is a laid-back city, with a dress code to match. You can turn up in an Elvis t-shirt, a tracksuit or sequined eveningwear, and no one will raise an eyebrow, so come as you are. The exception to this: church. When attending a service, it's best to dress smartly.

2. Always make reservations for brunch and fine dining

Brunch is a big deal in Memphis, and  restaurants book up fast, so always call ahead to secure a spot. For those seeking high-end dining, particularly if there’s a James Beard-nominated chef at the helm, you may need to call a couple of weeks ahead to guarantee a seat at the table.

If it’s a local barbeque or hot wing joint, just show up, but be prepared to wait in line.

3. Don’t forget your reusable water bottle

Ditch the throwaway bottles – Memphis’ water is classed as some of the tastiest in the world. With the flick of a tap or the push of a fountain’s button, you can hydrate with freshwater derived from natural reservoirs flowing hundreds of feet below Memphis’ surface.

And with Memphis’ notorious heat and humidity, topping up the aqua levels regularly is a must, especially from May through September.

4. The barbeque capital of the US also caters to vegans

In fact, we’ll raise you – it’s now fairly easy to be vegan in Memphis. Although the city has a reputation for giving us some of the finest pulled pork barbeque in the country, recent years have seen a fresh cluster of plant-based restaurants and stalls cropping up across the city. At many barbecue joints, it’s not uncommon to find vegetarian-friendly options like lion’s mane mushroom barbecue nachos or a barbecue portobello sandwich.

Local specialties focus on southern staples minus the meat. Think cauliflower hot wings, beet burgers, carrot dogs and vegan barbeque, for a new taste from Memphis.

Crosstown Concourse is home to a collective of health-conscious restaurants, while the Imagine Vegan Café caters to all your comfort food needs. Memphis Whistle dishes out mushroom-based culinary options.

5. Memphis’ churches have an open-door policy on Sunday

There are more than 2000 churches in the Greater Memphis Metropolitan area, the majority of which are Baptist. One of the best ways to ingratiate yourself into the city is to attend a Sunday morning church service, where tourists are welcome to respectfully join congregations in worship, which often involves a full choir and band.

The Reverend Al Green – yes, the former soul-singing legend  – can be found leading a fantastically dynamic service at his Full Gospel Tabernacle Church .

If you’re unsure of the etiquette, just quietly choose a pew in the back. A collection plate will likely make its round during the service, so come prepared.

6. Grab a takeout cup – the liquor laws are relaxed on Beale St

Memphis is a town of many quirks. One of them just happens to be that Beale St, home of the blues, is the only place in Tennessee where you can legally walk the street with an open alcohol container. This rule also loosely applies to the neighboring South Main Arts District, but only on the last Friday of each month when “Trolley Night” turns the entire street into an open-container-allowed block party.

On a warm summer evening, visitors can grab a drink from a Beale Street bar in a takeout cup and wander up and down America’s most famous musical highway, soaking up the live acoustics or catching a performance from the Beale Street Flippers, Memphis’ famed acrobatic troupe.

Note that cannabis containing THC, for both medical and recreational uses, is illegal in Memphis, though CBD shops can be found selling legal substitutes.

7. Memphis is LGBTIQ+ friendly, but you need to know where to go

Although Memphis’ scene is certainly more lowkey than neighboring Atlanta or New Orleans , a flourishing LGBTIQ+ community exists and is increasing in visibility. Cooper-Young and Overton Square are particularly LGBTIQ+ friendly neighborhoods, flying the flag with joyful rainbow crosswalks.

For those looking to explore Memphis’ LGBTIQ+ nightlife, the main roadblock is the lack of a condensed, specific district, so transport is essential for barhopping.

Atomic Rose is a weekend-only nightclub just steps from Beale Street with drag shows and bingo nights. Dru’s Bar in midtown offers karaoke nights and a patio for cooling off on balmy nights, while The Pumping Station in Crosstown is an ultra-inclusive neighborhood hangout that’s been crowned Memphis’ top gay bar.

Visit for the Tri-State Black Pride in June, or come for the four-day Memphis Pride Fest Weekend in June. It's the largest gathering of its kind in the Mid-South.

8. Don’t confuse Memphis with Nashville

A friendly(ish) rivalry between Tennessee’s two major cities permeates across most aspects of life, from sports to food and music. These sister cities are keepers of completely divergent cultural identities. If you once had the best night of your life on Nashville’s Honky Tonk Highway, maybe keep that one to yourself while in Memphis. In fact, you’ll struggle to find even a hint of country music in Memphis.

9. See the natural side of Memphis

The city’s connection with Tennessee’s natural beauty has been elevated in recent years. Historic Tom Lee Park re-opened along the Mississippi River after a $60 million renovation in 2023. And the $50 million Wolf River Greenway is connecting a riverfront walking and cycling trail to the city’s suburbs via more than 20 miles of trail along the city’s “other” river.

10. Much of Memphis is wheelchair accessible

Public transportation, especially mass transit options, are not standout in most American cities. However, Memphis does offer a wheelchair-accessible trolley system throughout downtown, which makes getting around its core easier.

The National Civil Rights Museum has ramp access for wheelchair users, while the Woodland Discovery Playground at Shelby Farms Park is a good place for under 12s of all abilities. The majority of Graceland is wheelchair accessible, aside from the basement rooms. Big River Crossing offers wheelchair-friendly views of the Mississippi River and the opportunity to cross over into Arkansas.

11. Is Memphis safe to visit?

While crime rates in the city dipped during the early and mid-2010s, Tennessee’s newly-relaxed gun laws have led to a wave of violent crime throughout the state. This is particularly true in Memphis, which has notched record numbers of car break-ins and homicides since 2019.

Newly-elected leadership from the mayor’s office to the district attorney and police chief are attempting to reign the situation in, but it’s a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings in the Bluff City. Police say the majority of violent crimes and break-ins are being perpetrated by teenagers and young adults.

Don’t leave valuables, luggage or travel documents in your vehicle, and try to avoid excessive displays of wealth. If you do catch someone in the act of breaking into your vehicle, it's best to avoid confrontation. Many thieves here are well armed.

Pockets of both downtown and midtown have recently been revitalized, with former derelict buildings transformed into residential blocks and thriving businesses. The city has also made meaningful investments in creating dedicated bike paths, making neighborhoods like the Broad Avenue Arts District, South Main Arts District, Cooper-Young, High Point Terrace and Shelby Farms active areas for cycling.

If you haven’t visited Memphis for a few years, expect to be pleasantly surprised by the safe and welcoming vibe in neighborhoods such as South Main and Overton Square, which hum with activity on weekend nights.

City officials have doubled down on efforts to increase police presence in two neighborhoods most frequently visited by tourists, downtown and midtown. Those two areas are also patrolled by the brilliantly-named blue suede shoe brigade, a collective of uniformed ambassadors on the lookout for nuisance issues. They are not police officers but are available for assistance. Yes, they actually wear blue suede sneakers, and yes, everyone jokes about stepping on them!

As with any metropolitan area, keep a constant eye on your belongings and note that it’s wise to stick to the main, well-lit tourist streets when exploring Memphis at night. The most common petty crimes are pickpocketing and car break-ins, so keep valuables close, especially around tourist landmarks, and never leave them in your car. In an emergency, call 911; for non-emergency situations call 211 to be directed to the relevant department.

12. When in doubt, ask a Memphian

Memphis is a friendly city steeped in southern charm, so striking up a conversation with locals tends to be straightforward and guarantees savvy insider tips.

Those looking for an in-depth chat should just ask a Memphian about their favorite barbeque spot. But be warned: everyone in Memphis has their favorite smoke, sauce and slaw combination, so the debate can quickly get heated.

No surprise, this is a popular setting for garden weddings, with flowers blooming from spring into the summer.

In the area called The Lowlands, find the Delta and Pollinator Gardens, next to the Delta House and Living Gazebo. The Japanese Garden of Tranquility with its Red Drum Bridge and Moongazing Pavilion is especially striking during the fall, when maple leaves turn crimson. Crystal Shrine Grotto

Highlights : Unique caverns with religious symbols and colorful crystals

Driving into the Memphis Memorial Cemetery , you could never imagine what awaits you beyond the reflecting pool and three-tiered fountain.

Across the stone bridges of this non-denominational cemetery that dates back nearly a century is the most unusual feature of the park: the crystal shrine grotto. Dug into a cavern, the grotto was produced by Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez.

Inspired by Biblical references, this creation features quartz crystals embedded in cement, Christian tableaus, and quotes with piped-in music to interpret the artist's vision.

Outside the grotto entrance is the 15-foot-tall Abrahams Oak, also created by the artist. People come not just to mourn but to celebrate–proms, graduations, weddings, and a sunrise service at Easter are held here.

While some of the best shopping can be enjoyed in the downtown area around Beale Street – especially if you're looking for souvenirs and music-related items – there are other areas of Memphis that are also popular among shoppers. Head to South Main street for an eclectic mix of galleries and clothes stores, while revitalized Overton Square is great for boutique stores and women's fashions and accessories. Be sure to visit the iconic Memphis Pyramid , which is now home to a huge Bass Pro Shop.

Memphis has a reliable and easy-to-use public transit system. The Memphis Area Transit Authority offers numerous buses around the city, plus a great trolley system that uses vintage cars across its network, adding immensely to the fun quotient. Buses and trolleys serve most major attractions, with affordable rates and regular services.

Alternatively, the Memphis Hop bus service is worth considering and visits most major attractions, including Graceland. And three of the city's largest attractions – Graceland, Sun Studio, and Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Studio – operate a free shuttle service that runs between them all day long, seven days a week.

The best time to visit Memphis is spring and autumn. Spring in Memphis is an extremely pleasant season, with the months of March, April, and May seeing median daytime temperatures starting in the low 70s and reaching the low 80s by season's end. Rainfall levels are usually quite tolerable in March and April, too, with only around eight or nine days of rain experienced.

As for the fall months of September, October, and November, you can expect things to drop from those summer highs in the 80s to cooler days with still-pleasant daytime temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. Optimal sunshine helps, with usually only a handful of rainy days expected in this otherwise dry season.

What of Memphis's summer weather? Well, June, July, and August all experience very similar daytime temperatures of between 88 to 92 degrees, with minimal notable difference regardless of the month. Summertime in Memphis is also quite humid, particularly in June and July, which are also relatively wet months.

While winters in Memphis are relatively short, temperatures during the months of December, January, and February can at times feel quite frigid. In fact, in January, while you may be lucky to see temperatures occasionally reaching 60 degrees, lows averaging in the 40s and even high 30s do occur.

Memphis, Tennessee, is a city known as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll and home of the blues. It’s known worldwide for its barbecue , but there is so much more to explore in the Bluff City. Memphis has a vibrant food scene that, yes, includes some of the best barbecue you’ll find, but there is also so much more to devour beyond the pit.

Steeped in history, Memphis is home to several world-renowned museums and landmarks that make it the perfect place for an enlightening and educational trip. It’s also a city that is robust in culture. Whether it's a night on Beale Street or just about any other venue, bar, or restaurant around town, you can’t walk three feet without hearing incredible live music . You can hear the blues, rock, country, and just about anything in between in Memphis. Beyond music, Memphis also has a booming theater scene. National tours are regularly performing at the Orpheum, but the locals can also put on quite a show so we urge you to check those out as well.

Memphians have a deep love for basketball and whether you attend a Tigers or a Grizzlies game while you’re in town, you’re bound to have an exciting night. But the city also boasts professional baseball, soccer, and football teams.

“Memphis is truly exploding with arts and culture, even in its pride for its sports teams. Memphians are passionate and unapologetic and we thrive in creation. We as Memphians ‘don’t bluff’ - and as they say, we always have one toe dipped in the mud of the Mississippi while the other hand is swinging our pearls.” — Courtney Oliver, Director of Special Events and Auditions at Playhouse on the Square .

There is truly something for everyone in Memphis. Here are the best things to do on your next trip to the Bluff City.

Downtown Digs

Alex Shansky

Want to stay downtown in the middle of all the action? There are plenty of options for that. First, The Peabody Hotel is a classic for a reason. The gorgeous, historic hotel first opened in 1869 and is referred to as “the South’s Grand Hotel.” Nestled right in the heart of downtown, you can easily walk to Beale St., Orpheum Theatre, Fed-Ex Forum, and more. It’s also the home of the world-famous Peabody Ducks who march twice daily through the lobby.

For other options downtown, the Hyatt Centric Beale Memphis is the only hotel located on the world-famous Beale Street. The property is home to rooftop whiskey bar and lounge, Beck & Call, which offers incredible views of the Mighty Mississippi River from nearly every angle. Before Central Station was a hotel, the train station opened in 1914, serving as the main hub for all arrivals and departures from the city. Now, it has 123 guest rooms and 9 suites, a cocktail bar called Eight & Sand, and the Amtrak train still takes visitors to/from Memphis to New Orleans and Chicago.

Immerse Yourself In Art In Overton Square

Alex Shanksy

Located in Midtown Memphis, The Memphian Hotel is nestled in the vibrant, art-forward Overton Square neighborhood. Here you'll be immersed in where the locals hang out. You are within walking distance of live theater, independent film, funky retail, the home of Ballet Memphis, and a plethora of restaurants and bars. The hotel itself is home to Midtown’s only rooftop bar, Tiger and Peacock.

Where The Location Is A Destination

Looking for your hotel to be a destination in itself? If you have come to town because you are the world’s biggest Elvis fan, then why not stay right next door to Graceland? The Guest House at Graceland is the ideal spot for the ultimate music lover’s trip to visit the house of the King of Rock & Roll. With Priscilla’s guidance, the hotel’s design is a mix of Southern hospitality and luxurious amenities of which Elvis himself would approve. If you’re seeking something a little more rustic and adventurous, check out  Big Cypress Lodge at Bass Pro Shop located inside the iconic Memphis Pyramid. Yes, that is correct, it’s a hotel inside a Bass Pro Shop, inside the Memphis Pyramid. It is a sight to see. Some rooms are designed like treehouses, some are like a hunting lodge. It will be a unique experience, as is the Bass Pro Shop itself.

Of course, you cannot come to Memphis without getting barbecue. But if you ask five locals where to go for the best in town, you will get five different answers. For a jumping-off point, check out the three Memphis restaurants on The South’s Top 50 Barbecue Joints of 2023 : Charlie Vergo’s Rendezvous , Cozy Corner , and A&R Bar-B-Que . These are all classics but we would also add Corky’s and a relative newcomer to the Memphis barbecue world, Elwood’s Shack –try the brisket pizza.

Beyond The Barbecue Pit

Memphis has an abundance of riches when it comes to excellent restaurants . There are options to please every palate and for every kind of diner–from the fine dining experience to the casual hang out and everything in between.

Memphis Classics

Memphis has many legacy restaurants. These are the places that locals frequent for weekly meals or special occasions. They are a part of the story of the people of Memphis and there are far too many to name; but, we have picked out just a few. Folk’s Folly is one of those special occasion favorites. On any given night you will see a group gathered over delicious steaks to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary. Coletta’s is one of the city’s oldest restaurants having just celebrated 100 years in 2023. The family-owned and run Italian eatery was also one of Elvis’s favorite spots. He loved their signature dish, BBQ pizza, which, per the Commercial Appeal , the Coletta family invented. The Four Way has been serving up soul food since 1946 and once served as an unofficial meeting place for local leaders of the Civil Rights movement. And yes, even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dined at The Four Way.

Of course, you’ll need dessert and while all of these places will have delicious options on their menus, there is one spot in Memphis worth a separate trip. Gibson’s Donuts has been serving delicious doughnuts since 1967 and it has become a favorite of locals and visitors alike. In fact not only did Alton Brown once say , “I’ve got to say, Memphis, Tennessee: probably my number one food town in the U.S.,” he also declared that Gibson’s “makes not just the best doughnut in the United States but, as far as I’m concerned, if all the other doughnuts went away and I still had Gibson’s, I’d be okay.”

Modern Memphis Meals

Sage Creative

In addition to the many historic restaurants around town, the Memphis food scene continues to grow and is abundant in newer options in a variety of cuisines. While these spots may not have decades-long customers–yet, they have quickly become can’t miss meals. South of Beale, or S.O.B. is situated right in the middle of the action downton on South Main Street. You can make a night of it having dinner at S.O.B. and then head out on Beale or to a show at the Orpheum. The menu offers something for everyone including those in your party who may be gluten free or vegetarian. The Duck Fried Rice and General Tso’s Cauliflower are fan favorites but we think they have the best burger in town.

Global Cafe is an international food hall where immigrant and refugee food entrepreneurs serve up meals from their respective home countries’ cuisine. You can take a culinary journey around the world all under the same roof. It’s located in Crosstown Concourse which is a revitalized mixed-use building that was originally a Sears retail store in 1927. The Lobbyist is a new modern restaurant downtown in the historic Chisca building. Chef Jimmy Gentry is behind the concept that focuses on natural and local ingredients to bring out extraordinary flavors. Menus change to reflect seasonality of produce and availability local meats.

Grab A Drink

Memphis has plenty of locations for libations, if that tickles your fancy. For beer lovers, check out Memphis-made Wiseacre Brewing Co. owned by brothers Davin and Kellan Bartosch. As stated on their website, the brothers founded Wiseacre to “deliver the crunkest brewery possible in their groovy hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.” The original taproom is located amongst several other great spots along Broad Ave.

If craft cocktails are more your speed, head to the trendy Cooper Young neighborhood and check out Alchemy . The cool atmosphere, great cocktails, and equally delicious small plates make this spot perfect for date nights or girls' nights.

If you’re looking for a great dive bar, well Memphis has maybe the best. Earnistine & Hazel’s is the stuff of legends, and oh, did we mention it’s said to be haunted? You can enjoy your adult beverage while tunes play from the jukebox and if you get hungry, you can grab one of their famous Soul Burgers. This spot is a true Memphis institution.

The National Civil Rights Museum is located at the former Lorraine Motel, the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. The museum opened in 1991, and it utilizes the location, interactive exhibits, and collections of historic artifacts to allow visitors to walk through the history of the Civil Rights movement. It’s an informative, impactful, and inspiring experience and should not be missed when you visit Memphis.

Of course, if you’re headed to Memphis, you are going to want to check out Graceland , the home of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Step inside Elvis Presley’s mansion and tour the living room, kitchen, the trophy room, and yes you will get to step foot in the Jungle Room. You can also pay your respects in the Meditation Garden where Elvis, his parents, Lisa Marie, and her son Benjamin Keough are all buried. Celebrate The Arts

Memphis is a music city. On any given day or night you could stumble upon incredible talent that has yet to be discovered. You would be hard-pressed to find a bar, lounge, restaurant, or club that didn’t have a live band or musician playing on a weekend night. And on Beale Street, that is true seven days a week, day or night. It is the home of the blues, after all. A few spots we suggest are B.B. King’s and Rum Boogie Cafe. The music plays on well beyond Beale St. in Memphis. Some other notable spots around town where the locals go to hear some good tunes are LaFayette’s Music Room and Railgarten .

Catch a Show

Raymond Boyd  / Contributor/Getty Images

Along with a love for live music, Memphis has a vibrant theater community. Downtown is home to the historic Orpheum Theatre , at the corner of Main and Beale. Originally built in 1890 as a Vaudeville playhouse, it was destroyed by fire in 1923 but was rebuilt and reopened five years later. Motion pictures replaced the Vaudeville shows but in the 1980’s, the Orpheum became the home for national touring companies of Broadway shows.

In Midtown, Playhouse on the Square is the city’s professional regional theater that both brings in talent from all over the country as well as utilizes the homegrown talent in the casts of each of their shows. “Memphis is home to dozens of theatre, dance, and musical organizations and we at Playhouse are proud to have a 55-year stake in the heart of this artistic community.  Playhouse on the Square prides itself on producing something for everyone—from children’s theatre to Pulitzer Prize-winning new works, we love to reflect and honor the soul of our community,” says Courtney Oliver,  Director of Special Events and Auditions.

In East Memphis, Theatre Memphis has been showcasing the best of local talent for over 100 years. If you plan a trip in December, you won’t want to miss their annual production of A Christmas Carol , a decades-long Memphis holiday tradition for the whole family.

How About The Sports Fans?

Memphis grizzlies.

Justin Ford  / Contributor/Getty Images

Since the NBA came to Memphis in 2001, Memphians have become loyal, loud, proud Grizzlies fans. Attending a game at FedEx Forum is not going to be like any regular basketball game. The arena is dubbed The Grindhouse because several years ago a former player said Memphis was all “grit and grind.” As the team hustles on the court, fans erupt in chants like “we don’t bluff” while waving yellow growl towels above their heads. Win or lose, we promise you’ll have a great time at a Grizzlies game.

Tennessee cities like Nashville are only getting more popular as destinations, and this historic southwestern Tennessee city has become well-loved for its fascinating history and thriving arts and culture scene.

Best things to do in Memphis

Sun Studio

1.  Sun Studio

Elvis Presley got his start at this small studio just east of downtown Memphis. Today, you can take a tour to learn all about Memphis’ musical lore from local artists who serve as tour guides. Plus, you can even stand at the microphone where the King of Rock & Roll himself made history while crooning “That’s All Right.”

Beale Street

2.  Beale Street

On the surface, Beale Street may seem like a regular tourist destination. But, stay a little longer, and you’ll experience some uniquely Memphis things. For example, find the Irish jumping goats at Silky O'Sullivan's , take in a world-class concert at the historic New Daisy Theater , scoop up a sundae at A. Schwab , nosh on a burger cooked in 100-year-old grease at Dyer’s , and (so) much more.

National Civil Rights Museum

3.  National Civil Rights Museum

Built on the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1968 assassination, the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel immerses visitors in the struggles of achieving civil rights from slavery through the 1960s and today. Experience first-hand accounts of events through artifacts, special displays, video presentations, and more.

Mississippi River

4.  Mississippi River

Divine abilities are not required to walk across this body of water. Instead, use the Big River Crossing’s bike and pedestrian bridge to travel across the Mississippi to West Memphis, Arkansas. Take in sweeping views of the river and the downtown skyline while enjoying the bridge’s seasonal light displays.

Stax Museum

5.  Stax Museum

Take a trip to Soulsville in southern Memphis to visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music . Built on the site of Stax Records, the museum offers a fun- and music-filled look at the origins of Memphis soul, focusing on legends like Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s. You can also get a close-up look at Isaac Hayes’ gold-plated, fur-lined Cadillac.

Peabody Hotel

6.  Peabody Hotel

Each day at 11am, a small but mighty parade of adorable ducks make their way from the rooftop of the Peabody Hotel across the lobby to the marble fountain, which is where they spend the day. Led by their red-coated Duckmaster, the feathered friends then return upstairs at 5 p.m. Kids get front-row seats to the march, while adults can enjoy a cocktail from the Lobby Bar.

Graceland

7.  Graceland

A Memphis travel guide would be incomplete without the well-known home of Elvis Presley. At Gr a celand , visitors can learn more about the artist’s origins and see his '70s home decor, including the famous Jungle Room. Across the street—and next to several cafes and other museums dedicated to music—you’ll find a relatively new museum featuring Elvis’ collection of classic cars.

Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid

8.  Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid

Why is there a pyramid in Memphis? And, why is it an outdoors supply store? Can I get to the top? Find out the answers to these two burning questions inside the enormous glass pyramid , where you can ride the nation’s tallest freestanding elevator to the observation decks. Bass Pro is also home to a bowling alley, restaurants, shooting ranges, and more.

AutoZone Park

9.  AutoZone Park

Se pro players in action before they’re called up to the big leagues by watching the Memphis Redbirds Triple-A baseball team play at AutoZone Park . Grab a local Ghost River brew and some barbecue nachos. Post-game, be sure to stick around for Saturday night fireworks at the ballpark.

FedExForum

10.  FedExForum

FedExForum –  which is conveniently close to Beale Street – is where you’ll find the local sports fans during basketball season. Cheer on the Memphis Grizzlies, an NBA team, and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team (AKA the Memphis Tigers) in this state-of-the-art arena. FedExForum also hosts world-class concerts and tours throughout the year.

11.  Paula & Raiford’s Disco

During the daytime, Paula & Raiford's Disco appears to be nothing more than a basic storefront on South Second Street. At night, however, the two-story venue comes alive with a red carpet entrance, bright lights, disco balls, a light-up dance floor, a fog machine, and the absolute best dancefloor to step on. Don’t forget your “sexy” stamp from club owner Paula Raiford.

12.  The Malco Summer Drive-In

The Malco Summer Drive-In is one of a few outdoor drive-in theaters still operational in the country. Don’t miss the Time Warp, a once-a-month, all-night movie marathon featuring cult classics. Pull up, roll down your windows, and enjoy favorites like Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds , The NeverEnding Story, and Jaws .

Shelby Farms Park

13.  Shelby Farms Park

Go where the locals go on sunny days (Memphis has plenty!) and enjoy the outdoors at Shelby Farms Park . As one of the largest urban parks in the nation, Shelby Farms offers miles of paved and unpaved trails, as well as boating (think: canoes, kayaks, SUPs, paddle boats, and more), a state-of-the-art playground, a Go Ape Zipline & Adventure Park, horseback riding, a handful of dining options, and a herd of buffalo. TL;DR: It’s impossible to be bored here.

Main Street

14.  Main Street

South Main Street in downtown Memphis offers visitors the chance to experience the city’s culture all on a single street. Take a ride on a vintage trolley , eat at dozens of locally-owned eateries, peruse the Blues Hall of Fame Museum and the Center for Southern Folklore , grab coffee at a cafe, and spot plenty of totally Instagram-worthy murals and sculptures.

15.  The Overton Park Shell

This outdoor amphitheater —which is located in the heart of picturesque Overton Park—hosts about 50 free concerts every year. Families flock from all around town with their blankets, chairs, and picnic baskets to enjoy live music coming from the same stage where Elvis first publicly performed.

16.  Wild Bill’s Juke Joint

Yes, you can always hear the blues on Beale, but, for an off-the-beaten-path experience, stay up late and visit Wild Bill's Juke Joint in the Vollintine-Evergreen District. Here, visitors can music from longtime blues gurus playing way into the wee hours of the morning. Beverage options include domestic beers in 40-ounce bottles or soda setups. (We’ll drink to that.)

17.  Alcenia’s

Good soul food is worth the wait, and, while you can find delicious Southern-style meals at several excellent spots around Memphis, Alcenia’s comes with an extra personal touch. Owner B.J. Chester-Tamayo often greets customers with hugs and personalized service before she prepares each meal. Choose from dishes like fried chicken, battered catfish, greens, cornbread, mac and cheese, yams, and more.

Memphis Zoo

18.  Memphis Zoo

Only three zoos in the United States have giant pandas on display—and the Memphis Zoo is one of them. Come see YaYa and LeLe play and eat bamboo, then explore the rest of the top-ranked zoo—home to polar bears, lions, monkeys, plenty of birds and reptiles, penguins, and a baby hippopotamus named Winnie.

19.  Broad Avenue

The Broad Avenue District is one of several Memphis neighborhoods where you can spend an afternoon shopping, eating, and drinking. Shop at Five In One Social Club or Falling Into Place for local souvenirs beyond generic tchotchkes. Then, grab a bite at Bounty on Broad , Maximo’s , or The Liquor Store . Then, finish off your night with live music and craft cocktails at The Cove .

Memphis Botanic Garden

20.  Memphis Botanic Garden

Spend some time strolling through the Memphis Botanic G arden . The 96-acre space boasts 30 specialty gardens, including rose and sculpture ones. You’ll also find nearly 170 acres of trees. Now through October 31, the Memphis Botanic Garden is hosting an Alice and Wonderland-themed exhibit that features awe-inspiring, topiary-like sculptures—as well as themed events like family tea parties. After, visitors can enjoy Holiday Wonders at the Garden, when sculptures come to life with light.

Mud Island Park

21.  Mud Island Park

Mud Island Park is just a short walk away from downtown Memphis. To get here, walk the half-mile-long Skybridge, which offers optimal Mississippi River views. Perhaps the park’s best – and most notable – feature is the Riverwalk, a scale of the Mississippi from Illinois to Louisiana. Visitors can walk along it to pass six states in just about five city blocks. At the end of the Riverwalk, you’ll find the “Gulf of Mexico”—AKA a million-gallon pool—surrounded by city and water views.

World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

22.  World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

Getting Around During Your Memphis Weekend Getaway

The best way to get around Memphis is with a car. Memphis is actually a bit spread out, so it’s not super walkable. However, if you’re only planning on staying and exploring Downtown Memphis, you might find it easier. Because of this, Memphis is a very driver-friendly city, and you’ll pretty easily be able to find parking. But keep in mind you may have to deal with your typical large city traffic.

If that’s not your thing, don’t worry. Memphis also has a pretty good public transit system. You can get around in the city on the city buses and trolleys. They also recently started a bike share program.

So, if you hate public transportation, but also don’t want to drive, renting a bike is a great option too! Another cool way to get around in the city is on the Memphis Hop-on Hop-off Bus . Memphis has tons of options to make it easier to explore the city.

The Ultimate 2 Day Weekend In Memphis Itinerary

Day 1: explore memphis tennesse’s music history.

On your first day of exploring Memphis on a weekend, we suggest visiting all of the major music history spots. You’ll start the day a little outside of the city, in Graceland, and make your way farther into the heart of Downtown Memphis throughout the day. You’ll definitely want a car or something similar to get around on this day.

But first, head for breakfast at one of our favorite Memphis Breakfast Spots!

Stop 1: Graceland

Your first stop when you’re spending a weekend in Memphis should obviously be Graceland. Graceland is the estate of Elvis Presley, and it’s probably the reason most people come to Memphis. Elvis was one of the biggest recording artists of all time. Even today, even 45 years after his death, he continues to sell platinum records and draw crowds to anything and everything ‘Elvis’.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Elvis, Graceland is super cool to explore. Most of the rooms have unique themes, like the Jungle Room or the Mirror Room. If you do love Elvis, the estate is also full of Elvis memorabilia, and unique artifacts. The estate also has extensive gardens and you can view Elvis’ collection of vintage cars. You’ll need to book entry ahead of time, but it’s totally worth it.

For a true VIP experience, if you have more days to explore Memphis, check out the full-day Memphis and VIP Graceland Tour .

Stop 2: Stax Museum Of American Soul Music

The second stop we suggest for a fun 48 hours in Memphis is the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. While Memphis is best known for its Blues and Rock n’ Roll history, it also has a proud Soul music scene. The museum was started by Stax Records, which was a branch of Atlantic Records.

For those who may not know, Soul is a music genre that was started by Black people in America. It has its roots in Black gospel music, as well as Rhythm and Blues. It started to gain in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. One of the most famous Soul musicians is Otis Redding, who signed on to Stax Records in 1962.

At the museum, you’ll learn all about the history of Soul music, as well as it’s present and future. As well as exhibits on the genre’s history, you’ll find other cool things to check out in the museum. They have interactive exhibits, a listening booth, and tons more. You’ll want to book your entrance beforehand and give yourself plenty of time to explore.

Stop 3: Sun Studio

From the Stax Museum, you’ll continue to your next destination as you learn about Memphis’ music history. Sun Studio is a short 5-minute drive from the Stax Museum. It’s also a stop on the Memphis Hop-on Hop-Off Bus Tour . The Sun Studio is known as the ‘Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll’. Inside, you’ll find the first microphone Elvis used when he was just 18, or the recording studio often used by BB King.

Along with the unique music history artifacts in the studio, it’s still a fully functional studio. The studio serves as a museum during the day, and at 7 pm, it is a working recording studio. You don’t have to be a famous musician to record in the studio, but it’s not cheap. Instead, bring a piece of Sun Studio home with you by getting something cool at the unique gift shop.

Stop 4: National Civil Rights Museum

As you start to wind down the day, you’ll be heading farther into Downtown Memphis. Your next stop is one of the most unique things to do in Memphis . It’s the National Civil Rights Museum, which is about a 30-minute walk away from Sun Studio.

You may think the National Civil Rights Museum is a weird stop for a day of learning about the city’s music history. However, Memphis’ Rock n’ Roll, Blues, and Soul music all have roots in Black music traditions. That contribution, along with so much else, is often overlooked.

So, while you’re learning about the history of Memphis’ music, it’s important to learn about the people who had such a large impact on it. A lot of music coming out of Memphis in the 1960s was heavily impacted by the city’s direct ties to the Civil Rights Movement.

In the National Civil Rights Museum, you’ll hear first-hand accounts of Black people fighting for equality during the Civil Rights Movement. It takes you through the entire history of the movement as well as its impact on the nation and the city of Memphis. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore this Memphis museum.

Stop 5: Memphis Music Hall Of Fame

Just a 10-minute walk away, you’ll find your next fun thing to do in Memphis in a weekend. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame is another great place to learn more about the city’s music scene. Every artist featured in this museum was born and raised in Memphis. The museum honors its achievements in the music industry. It’s been open since 2012 and every year the museum hosts a concert and induction ceremony.

You’ll find a large variety of inductees within the museum. Inductees include Aretha Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash, Al Green, ZZ Top, and the Three 6 Mafia. The music genres of the inductees span from Soul, Blues, Jazz, Rock n’ Roll, Pop, Rap, and Hip Hop. Along with the exhibits about the inductees, you’ll get to see some never before seen memorabilia, artifacts, and video interviews. It’s a really cool thing to do if it’s your first time in Memphis.

Stop 6: Beale Street

The last stop on the first day of your 2 days in Memphis trip is Beale Street. Not only is Beale Street full of music history, but it’s also one of the most interesting Black history sites in the south . That’s because this historic district was built by Memphis’ Black community after the Civil War. If you only have enough time to see Memphis in a weekend, then you have to have a trip to Beale Street on your itinerary for Memphis.

Along Beale Street, you’ll find the rich culture and home of the Blues. The Blues is a music genre with strong roots in the Black community of Memphis. It evolved from the slave hymns the Black people of Memphis would sing as they worked on building Beale Street. The street is full of unique music venues, bars, and restaurants. You can book a walking tour of the street, or just meander on your own. There’s no wrong way to do it!

On your second day, we suggest seeing some of the more unique things to do in Memphis. You’ll want to put on your walking shoes because this day in your itinerary for Memphis is completely walkable if you want.

Stop 1: South Main Arts District

Start the second day of your Memphis weekend trip in the South Main Arts District. The South Main Arts District is a super popular area in Memphis to explore. Not only is it a beautiful spot within the city, but it’s also a pretty famous filming location. You’ll see the district in movies like Walk the Line and Elizabethtown !

While you’re there, you’ll find tons of fun things to do in Memphis ‘ famous arts district. We suggest hopping on the trolley for a ride, exploring the boutiques, and taking an Instagram-worthy shot at any one of the murals. You’ll also find some great restaurants and cafes. So it’s a great place to start the last of your 2 days in Memphis. Grab a cup of coffee, and a pastry, and just explore!

Looking down the sidewalk in the South Main Arts district. You can see restaurant signs, patio seating, and vendors selling trinkets.

Stop 2: Orpheum Theater

After you’re done exploring the South Main Arts District, head to the Orpheum Theater. You can walk from the South Main Arts District, or grab a ride on the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus . However you decide to get there, it’s a must-see attraction if it’s your first time in Memphis. The Orpheum Theater is one of the longest-running theaters in the US. They even still put on shows!

You can see anything from live Jazz bands, Broadway shows, or even ballets. The Orpheum Theater is an iconic thing to do in Memphis on a weekend since that’s when most of the shows take place. Even if you can’t make it to a show, we suggest stopping by to see the famous sign lit up at night. The theater is even said to be haunted by a young girl from the 1920s. So if you get to see a show, look out for this friendly ghost while you’re there.

Stop 3: The Peabody Hotel Memphis

The Peabody Hotel Memphis is a famous hotel that is just a short 7-minute walk away from The Orpheum Theater. Or take the short bus ride . Not only is it one of the best hotels in the south, but it’s also just really cool to explore. You can of course choose to stay here during your 48 hours in Memphis. But it is pricey. However, you don’t have to be staying in the hotel to see its main attraction.

In the Peabody Hotel Memphis, you’ll find the most famous waterfowl in Memphis. Maybe even in Tennessee. Yes, you read that right. The lobby of the Peabody Hotel Memphis features a huge fountain that is full of live ducks.

Twice a day, at 11 am and 5 pm, the ducks waddle down to the lobby and hang out in the massive fountain. They live the life of celebrities, and people from all over come to the hotel to take pictures of the famous ducks and the massive fountain. It’s a little odd, but this unique thing to do in Memphis is worth a stop.

Stop 4: The Memphis Pyramid

After seeing the celebrity ducks at the Peabody Hotel Memphis, walk about 20 minutes to the Memphis Pyramid. Believe it or not, the Memphis Pyramid is the 7th largest pyramid in the world. You may be asking yourself why there is a huge pyramid in Memphis at all. It actually started out as a concert venue.

However, today, it’s a huge tourist destination and mall. It’s absolutely massive, and if you love to shop you could easily spend all day here. For our weekend guide to Memphis, you don’t necessarily have the time for that. But we still suggest stopping by just to see it and maybe browse a store or two. It’s also a stop on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus.

The museum is in an estate that is filled with secret passageways, trapdoors, and hiding spots. It is believed that these were all used to hide enslaved people looking to escape the south. The museum is full of artifacts, stories, and other items relating to the terrible history of the slave trade in the US and the Underground Railroad. A. Schwab

A. Schwab is one of the most unique tourist attractions in Memphis.

It’s a small, family-owned souvenir shop that’s tucked away in the vintage brick storefronts of Beale Street, and it’s filled to the brim with kooky knickknacks that aren’t available anywhere else in the city.

For example, have you ever seen the world’s largest pair of overalls?

They hang from the ceiling of A. Schwab.

You can also find trinkets, souvenirs, homemade crafts and black magic hoodoo charms.

If you get hungry, an old-fashioned soda machine can whip up some beer or ice cream.

If you want to take a snack with you, you can bag all sorts of kitschy candy from the candy station.

A. Schwab is definitely one of the best places to go in Memphis.

It has so many cool things to experience that you won’t even know which way to turn, so it’s perfect for an afternoon of fun.

9. Southland Casino

Southland Casino Racing

Southland Casino Racing

Tennessee has strict gambling laws, but as a city on the border of both Arkansas and Mississippi, Memphis has figured out several ways to get around that.

One of their methods is to direct visitors to places like the Southland Casino.

Located in West Memphis, a city that technically falls outside of state lines, Southland Casino is a haven for gamblers and ramblers.

It offers slots, cards, lotteries and table games without any of the usual restrictions.

You can even bet on greyhound races!

You might also enjoy the bars and buffets of the casino.

It has a good half-dozen restaurants where “tonight’s special” can range from cheap burgers to luxurious champagnes, so there’s always something tasty on the menu.

Live entertainment is a staple of the weekends; you can listen to singers or comedians while you sip your cocktail.

Getting around Memphis’s gambling laws is a thrill in its own right, but it’s even more exciting with a soundtrack of slot machines.

If you’re wondering what to do on a Memphis vacation with a little extra money in your pocket, bet on black at Southland Casino!

Though it only comes around once a year, Memphis in May is one of the biggest events in Tennessee, and it’s a must do when you’re near the city.

It’s a celebration of art, food, music and culture that lasts an entire month!

Vendors come from all around the world to set up shopping and gaming booths.

Musicians fly in for outdoor concerts.

Runners have a 5K marathon through the grounds.

Memphis in May is also known for its one-of-a-kind festivities.

There are also hog runs, potato sack races and pie-eating contests.

Are you wondering how to plan a trip to Memphis, Tennessee?

Go in the month of May.

You might get a little coleslaw on your shirt, but after having a breathlessly good time, it’ll be worth the extra laundry.

Autozone Park

Downtown Memphis is a heady mix of sights, sounds and scents, but when the smell of popcorn is in the air, you’ll know that you’re close to AutoZone Park .

As a small-time stadium, AutoZone Park isn’t as grand as some of the others that you might see near Memphis.

What it lacks in size, however, it makes up for with atmosphere.

Its cozy seating means that you’re always at the forefront of the action, and its vintage decor will take you back to the days when you could buy peanuts and hot dogs for 10 cents.

Its special amenities include an on-site playground for kids and two open-air party decks for adults.

When it isn’t hosting baseball games, it’s rented out for festivals, music events and haunted houses.

Schedule a trip to AutoZone Park if you’re looking for things to see in Memphis, Tennessee, that aren’t dependent on the weather or season.

There’s always something going on at this nifty little stadium, so you can count on having a fun experience here no matter when you’re traveling to Tennessee.

16. National Civil Rights Museum

National Civil Rights Museum

Memphis was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, especially after the assassination of Martin Luther King at a Memphis motel in 1968.

Rather than brushing over its ugly heritage, the city decided to use the motel as a foundation for cultural and historical education, and the National Civil Rights Museum was built around it.

You’ll need several hours to take in everything at the museum, and even that might not be enough.

It’s filled with photos, documents, artifacts and exhibitions that showcase the long and painful struggle for equal rights in Tennessee.

There’s a life-sized replica of a bus that was destroyed by white supremacists during the Freedom Rides.

There are audio listening posts that detail various boycotts and sit-ins of activists fighting for justice.

It can be difficult to see and listen to these things.

However, the Civil Rights Movement is an important part of our heritage that shouldn’t be forgotten, and this Memphis museum is dedicated to the preservation of history and the education of its visitors.

2 Killed and 6 Injured in Shooting at Memphis Park Party, Police Say

Sunday, 21 April 2024 06:15 AM EDT

Eight people were shot including two men who were killed at an unsanctioned public party in a Memphis city park Saturday night, police said.

Officers responded at 7:19 p.m. to a reported shooting, Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn Davis said during a news conference at the scene.

Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, Davis said.

The six surviving victims were transported to area hospitals and one was in critical condition at Regional One Health in Memphis, police said.

The shooting occurred at a block party in Orange Mound Park, which Davis said included an estimated 200 to 300 attendees but did not appear to have been issued a city permit.

At least two people are believed to have fired weapons during the shooting and police were examing video footage as part of the ongoing investigation, Davis said. There were no immediate arrests.

“In light of recent events, we stand together to denounce these senseless acts of violence,” Davis said.

The Memphis police initially reported there were 16 people shot but revised the number in a social media post, noting the error appeared to have been a result of “several victims being reported multiple times.”

Tennessee mass shootings: Here’s how many have happened in the state this year

Tennessee has seen a growing number of mass shootings in recent years as gun control advocates call for stricter laws..

visit memphis tennessee

This past weekend in Memphis, two people were killed and six injured in a mass shooting at a block party in a park.

On March 31, Easter Sunday, seven people were hurt and one killed at a shooting at a coffee shop in Nashville. The suspect, a convicted felon, was captured two days later in Kentucky.

Tennessee, like other states, has seen a growing number of mass shootings in recent years as gun control advocates call for stricter laws . The calls for more gun control have become especially intense following the mass shooting at Covenant School last year that killed six people.

State lawmakers failed to pass any significant legislation on gun control in a special legislative session on public safety last August. And this year, Republican lawmakers have sparked controversy with a bill that would allow teachers to carry firearms on school grounds. The bill is pending action in the House.

As the state struggles to combat gun violence, here is a closer look at recent mass shootings.

How many mass shootings have happened in Tennessee so far this year?

Tennessee has seen six mass shootings this year as of April 22, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a nonprofit that collects daily gun violence incidents from more than 7,500 law enforcement, media and other sources.

In addition to the case in Memphis this past weekend, and the Easter Sunday shooting in Nashville, the other cases include:

  • Jan. 28 shooting at an apartment complex that left two dead and two injured in Memphis.
  • Feb. 11 shooting in Jackson that left four people injured. A Jackson Police officer shot and killed the suspect .
  • March 14 shooting in Memphis that left a woman dead and three others, including an 11-year-old girl, injured.
  • April 14 shooting that left six people injured at a Nashville nightclub .

Nationwide, the country has seen more than 120 mass shootings so far this year, according to GVA.

How many mass shootings happened in 2023?

Tennessee saw 21 mass shootings in 2023, up from 16 in 2022 and 15 in 2021.

The deadliest last year was the Covenant School shooting on March 27 that killed six people, including three children .

In another deadly case last year, a man in Sequatchie, west of Chattanooga, killed his estranged wife, step daughter and three children before turning the gun on himself. Court records showed that the man had been prohibited from having guns under a judge's order six months before the incident.

How does Tennessee compare to other states?

While Tennessee (with 21 shootings) had a high number compared to other states last year, it didn’t make the top ten, according to GVA.

The top ten for 2023 were:

  • Illinois: 51
  • California: 50
  • Pennsylvania: 35
  • North Carolina: 33
  • Louisiana: 31
  • Florida: 30
  • Mississippi: 25
  • Georgia: 25

What’s the definition of a mass shooting?

It varies. There is no widely accepted definition of mass shooting, as some organizations base it on the number of fatalities, while others count injured victims as well.

The GVA defines a mass shooting as a minimum of four people shot (either injured or killed) not including any shooters.

The FBI doesn’t have a specific definition for mass shooting and defines “mass killings” as an incident in which four or more victims are killed, which can include gun violence.

USA TODAY defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are shot, including fatalities and/or injuries. USA Today defines mass killings as four or more fatalities.

Mass killing database: Revealing trends, details and anguish of every US event since 2006

How many mass killings did Tennessee see last year?

The state has not seen any mass killings so far this year, under USA Today’s definition of four or more fatalities.

Last year, Tennessee saw four mass killings, including the Covenant School shooting and the murder-suicide in Sequatchie.

The other cases included a Lutrelle man who shot four children in his home before turning the gun on himself in January 2023, and a man in Memphis who killed four female relatives before shooting himself in November.

Compared to previous years, the state saw one mass killing in both 2021 and 2019, and no mass killings in 2020.

The state overall has seen 15 mass killings since 2008, with the deadliest being a shocking case in Westmoreland, where Michael Cummins killed eight people across multiple crime scenes in 2019.

He was sentenced to life in prison last year after pleading guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder.

2 dead, 7 injured in shooting at block party in Memphis, Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - Police in Tennessee are investigating a mass shooting at a block party that left at least two people dead and seven others injured.

Police said there were nine total victims in the Saturday night shooting at Orange Mound Park in Memphis. Two men were pronounced dead on scene, and six others were taken to the hospital. The victims hospitalized were in stable condition, and one was released, WMC reports .

Police said Sunday that another victim was identified. They were in non-critical condition.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said the shooting took place at a block party attended by about 200 to 300 people. It’s believed there was no permit for the party.

Davis said at least two people were believed to have fired weapons during the shooting, according to the Associated Press . Police are offering a $15,000 reward for information on the suspects.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young released a statement Saturday morning regarding the shooting:

“This morning, we are one community united by grief. We are all Orange Mound this morning.

There are no words that can adequately express the pain we are all feeling over this most recent act of senseless violence - where guns were brazenly brought to a park filled with young people, families and children. And there are no words to describe the frustration of having to use the qualifier ‘most recent’ when speaking of the violence in our community.

This must stop. The violence must end. For the future of our city, we have to solve the problem together.”

Police initially reported there were 16 total victims in the shooting but later revised that number. The department believes the error happened due to victims being reported more than once.
