Where in the world do you want to make a difference?

”There was never just one memory that was my favorite, there were to many to choose from. My time spent in Africa will always remind me of when I was happiest, theres just something about it that made me feel a sense of belonging I had never felt before. It was amazing and I'm so thankful I chose to go to Arusha. The friends I made were from all over the world and we were all so different, but at the same time so similar we were there with a purpose, all of us. I still talk to so many of the friends I made there, its so amazing. The program manager, Victoria, was awesome I was never afraid to ask questions and she was always there for me and any volunteer no matter what time or what day, not only that she's one of the good hearted people I've ever met. The whole staff really made the visit so enjoyable.”

The accommodations and food were truly awesome! We had a very nice restaurant, with lots of great lunch options, and wonderful home-cooked food every night for supper... It was real value for your money!

I absolutely loved the amazon shelter. I returned again a 2nd time. The highlight of my time... was the care of Ellie the Tapir... and one of the sloths. I assisted with many animal rescues and releases. The staff at the shelter are all friendly... Over the road there is a little bar with a lovely view of the amazon river and the sunset.

Alex D

It was amazing apart from doing a great thing I’ve also learned a lot about turtles and ocean. I met really great people which made this trip unforgettable. I recommend everyone going to Maldives for volunteering you will never regret that.

Hlib R.

An unforgettable experience! Being able to identify individual dolphins even from over 20 years ago and name new dolphins, gives a deeper sense of connection to these magnificent creatures. I also enjoyed learning about dolphin communication. It’s nice spending the day on the boat and then relaxing in the thermal pools. 10 out of 10, I would love to do this again!

Andrea B.

I spent 4 weeks and loved my time there. The work is tough & hands on but very rewarding!! It’s so lovely to see first hand how best to rehabilitate the animals. Everyone at the shelter was nice and friendly. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and hope to one day have again!!

Why volunteer in Africa?

Africa is one of the most popular destinations for volunteers abroad, and for good reason. In the countries where we work, communities face numerous challenges and need extra support. As a volunteer, you’ll provide resources, offer your skills, and work directly with local people towards long-term goals.

Volunteers in Africa do things like :

  • Treat wounds for leprosy patients and test for malaria in Ghana
  • Build classrooms in Maasai villages in Tanzania

And so much more!

These are Africa-specific issues that need people like you to offer your time for long-term solutions. At the same time, you get to explore a unique culture in some of the world’s most spectacular locations.

International Volunteer FAQs

Why choose volunteer holidays overseas.

International volunteer projects helping animals offer unique opportunities to contribute to wildlife conservation, biodiversity preservation, and animal welfare initiatives. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider volunteering:

  • Conservation Impact: By becoming an international volunteer, you can directly contribute to the conservation of endangered species and habitats, helping to protect biodiversity and ecosystems for future generations.
  • Hands-On Experience: Volunteering provides hands-on experience working with a diverse range of wildlife, allowing you to learn about animal behavior, ecology, and conservation techniques from experienced professionals in the field.
  • Personal Growth: Working with animals in a different cultural and environmental context can be a transformative experience, fostering personal growth, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for nature and wildlife.
  • Contribution to Local Communities: Many animal conservation projects in Africa also benefit local communities by providing employment opportunities, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and promoting eco-tourism, thus contributing to poverty alleviation and community development.
  • Educational Opportunities: Volunteering often includes educational components, such as workshops, lectures, and field trips, which allow you to deepen your understanding of conservation issues and gain valuable skills that can be applied in future endeavors.
  • Making a Difference: Overseas volunteering allows you to make a tangible difference in the lives of individual animals and contribute to larger conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding entire species and ecosystems.

Overall, becoming an international volunteer can be a rewarding and meaningful experience that allows you to connect with nature, make a positive impact, and contribute to the collective effort to protect and preserve wildlife for generations to come.

What is the role of an international volunteer?

There are a number of options for international volunteering. If you are interested in seeing endangered and threatened wildlife such as lions, elephants and rhinos, in the wild, join one of our exciting Wildlife Conservation Programs . If you’re keen to be in the ocean, Marine Conservation will be right up your street – no prior diving experience is required and full training is given. If you’ve volunteered before and want to expand your knowledge, we offer a range of Wildlife Courses and Internships, including a Wildlife Veterinary Internship in Malawi and a Horse Riding Internship in coastal Mozambique . Conservation volunteers will undertake activities such as wildlife monitoring, game counts, research projects, collecting and analysing data and setting camera traps, while marine volunteers might get involved with shark tagging, manta ray identification and humpback whale research.

Why become an international volunteer in Africa?

Traveling with a purpose is ideal for people who want to have an amazing experience and make a difference during their holidays or their gap years. There are a huge number of benefits to overseas volunteering, both for your own personal development and to support wildlife and communities across Africa. These benefits include:

  • Build confidence and leave your comfort zone
  • Meet new people sharing a common purpose
  • Share ideas, languages and cultures with like-minded volunteers
  • Learn new skills and gain international experience – great for your CV or resume!
  • Form new life goals and open up new possibilities
  • Return home with a new perspective and lots of great memories!

Are volunteer holidays overseas ethical?

Volunteers have a crucial role to play in the conservation of wildlife in Africa. We hold our projects to very high standards, to ensure volunteers can be sure they are only doing genuinely meaningful work which has the maximum impact. The ethics of overseas volunteering depend on various factors, and we advise volunteers to check out the projects they are interested in carefully and ask lots of questions about how their fees are used, what volunteers are doing and why they are needed. If you’re looking to contact us for more information, key questions to ask include:

  • Why are volunteers needed?
  • What is the impact of volunteers on local communities?
  • What are the long-term goals of the program?
  • How have volunteers made a positive impact in the past?

Most of our projects will accept solo volunteers aged 17 and over and accompanied volunteers aged 12 and above. There are no upper age limits on any of our programs! If you have limited holiday time, there are several short-term volunteer programs where you can stay for a week and still make an impact. We’d recommend one week as the minimum duration, to make sure you have time to settle in and get involved with as many activities as possible.

Fees are essential for international volunteer projects. Without adequate funding, programs would not be able to operate sustainably in the long term. Project fees cover the costs of hosting volunteers – your food, accommodation, transfers, supervision, equipment and much more. Additionally, volunteer fees contribute to the huge costs of the long-term goals of the organisation – the ongoing costs of protecting wildlife (anti-poaching staff, motorbikes, security equipment, fencing), veterinary fees, support for local communities (education, healthcare, infrastructure programs), staff costs and maintenance. The money you pay to volunteer ensures you have a hassle-free trip – where your questions are answered quickly before you leave home; to ensure you are met and transferred in safe, roadworthy vehicles and that the equipment you need to do meaningful work is safe and maintained.

How much does it cost to volunteer?

The cost of volunteering will vary depending on where you go, what you want to do and how long you want to stay. Our program fees generally include:

  • 3 meals a day
  • Accommodation
  • Airport transfers
  • Staff supervision
  • Pre-arrival support and assistance

We take a low deposit to secure your place and then the balance of your fees is only due a few months before you travel. It’s possible to pay in instalments if that’s easier to budget.

🦏 Why Volunteer with Animals in Africa?

That Africa has a lot to offer would be an understatement. Due to its different climate zones, ranging from a tropical to a subarctic climate, Africa boasts a variety of scenery from green forests to arid deserts and is home to a variety of fascinating wildlife . Can you guess their national animal? It is the Springbok - a small, white gazelle. The South African rugby team is also known as the Boks.

Different African animals, such as mammals, birds or predators are found in the national parks as well as in countryside of the continent. Here a few facts you might not have known about Africa’s most famous national park:

  • The Kruger National Park was founded in 1926 and Africa’s biggest wildlife reserve
  • The park is about 2 million hectares which is about the same size as Israel.
  • With 147 different species, the national park is home to the greatest variety of large mammals in comparison to other conservation areas.
  • It is also home to the extremely rare white lion. In 2009, the first white lion was introduced back into the wild which has increased the population ever since.

🦁 How to Volunteer in Africa with Animals?

First you should find the right volunteer project for animals in Africa. In a first step it is important to find out for which species you want to protect:

Big Five Conservation

Have you ever heard of the Big Five when people talk about Africa? It is a name for South Africa’s most popular animals; lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos, and leopards. The term was originally used during the 19th and 20th centuries by professional hunters referring to the five most difficult and dangerous species to hunt. Nowadays, the term has been adapted by tourist guides as a national term that stands for the continent’s most popular animals. The Big Five live in the south of the Sahara and are a must-see when you volunteer with African animals.

The Elephant

The first animal belonging to Africa’s Big Five is the African Elephant . It is the largest living land mammal in the world. The largest Elephants can get as big as 7.5 meters in length, 3.3 meters tall and weigh up to 6 tons. If you get the chance to see the Elephant in the wild, you will notice that they never appear alone. Elephants are organized in herds consisting of related female Elephants and their calves. Usually, the male Elephants live by themselves, but sometimes they can be detected in small groups with other male members of their species.

Sadly, the Elephant is among the most endangered animals of the continent. Counting up to five million species in the last century, the population of the Elephant has reduced massively. In some regions, the population has decreased up to 80%. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, the biggest impacts on the wild Elephants are:

  • the demand for ivory
  • changes in the usage of the continent

Another member of the ‘Big Five’ is the Rhino . When seeing the Rhino, most people get the impression that it dates from the Stone Age due to its peculiar, primitive look. Sadly, the Rhino is endangered. Its population has declined by 90 percent since the 1970s and there are no more than five species remaining today.

The Buffalo

Another species that is counted amongst the ‘Big Five’ is the Buffalo. They are characterized by their famous horns. If you plan to go on a safari, make sure to keep your distance. At first glance, they seem to be rather calm and inactive, but don’t be deceived. If this animal feels disturbed in their environment, they can be unpredictable and unstoppable.

The Leopard

In contrast to the Buffalos, Leopards are rather trustworthy and have gotten used to the recurring safari tourists in cross country vehicles over the past years. There’s a good chance you will be able to tick off the Leopard from your ‘Big Five’ list of animals to see.

The African Lion

Last but not least, there is the African Lion. Lion species are mainly found in the savanna grasslands, but their habitat originally includes most of the continent except the rainforest and the Sahara desert. Similar to the Rhino, the Lion is considered an endangered species with an estimated 30-50% decline over the late half of the twentieth century.

Causes for this rapid decline include disease and human interference. In order to counteract the decline of the lion population, different African wildlife conservation projects have been organized over the past years. Have you ever heard of the Species Survival Plan? This plan was founded in 1982 for the conservation of the Asian Lion. Luckily the Lion was included in 1993.

Africa’s Marine Life

We’ve covered the land creatures but there is also a lot going on regarding marine life here. Did you know that Africa is the richest continent in freshwater fish, with about 3000 different species? The Southern Right Whale, for example, is the largest mammal in the southern hemisphere weighing up to 60 tons and has its breeding ground off the coast of South Africa. Other regular visitors are the Humpback- and Bryde’s whales.

During your volunteer experience abroad you should definitely watch sharks and dolphins , as the coasts contain a high diversity of marine animals. The Whales appear along the south coast between July and December. If you are lucky, you will even get the chance to see dolphin schools that consist of up to 300 dolphins!

Africa’s Bird’s and Insects

As you might know, the tropical regions of Africa have one of the most spectacular diversity of bird- and insect life. Can you imagine that this continent has over 2.600 different species of birds? You can even find four different species of penguins on the shores of South Africa. The most popular penguin is referred to as the jackass penguin or black-footed penguin. Presumably not the first animal that comes to mind when you think of Africa.

African Reptiles

Africa also offers a variety of reptiles, such as snakes, tortoises, lizards and crocodiles. The African Rock Python, for example, is one of the largest species of python worldwide and the largest snake on the continent. The Nile crocodile is similarly categorized as the Python. It is not only the most dangerous and aggressive species of crocodiles but also the second largest reptile in the world as it can grow up to 5 meters in length.

It seems as though Africa is home to the largest and most dangerous reptiles but there are also many other animals that do not fall in this category. Take the African Spurred Tortoise as an example. This species may be the largest tortoise on the continent but isn’t dangerous.

🐘 What are the Most Endangered Animals in Africa?

Africa is home to a variety of different endangered species. It isn’t only the Lion, the Elephant and the Rhino who belong to the national group of endangered species. Other animals such as the Grevy’s Zebra are also endangered. Its population has declined from 15.000 to 3.000 since the 1970’s. Wild Dogs are also amongst the endangered species and their numbers are constantly declining.

Also critically endangered are the Mountain Gorillas . They can be found in the Virunga Volcanic Mountains in Central Africa or in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south-western Uganda and are the rarest great apes in the world. Due to wildlife conservation work, the Gorilla population has increased from 620 in 1989 to about 880 today . Although this is a great development, we aren’t there yet and help is always needed.

Each of these creatures is threatened and relies on the support of volunteer programs to ensure its future. Volunteer for African conservation of wildlife to support wildlife conservation projects and give these magnificent creatures the chance to keep gracing our planet.

🦍 What are the Biggest Threats to African Wildlife?

But why are so many of the above mentioned species endangered? Here are some of the reasons :

  • reduced water sources
  • degradation of the animals’ natural habitat through deforestation and extraction of natural resources
  • human-induced reasons like hunting

It’s obvious that there are conflicts between the existence of wildlife and humans . Especially deforestation and the general extraction of natural resources are threatening Africa’s wildlife.

In order to help the endangered animals on this continent, different conservation programs in Africa have been established in the last decades and they have accomplished important work in both the conservation of endangered animals as biodiversity conservation.

Although Africa attracts people from around the world to see these exotic species, a lot of these species are endangered. Programs that are dedicated to reversing the downward trend in their population rely on the help of wildlife volunteers to contribute to African wildlife conservation. Take this chance and join one of the projects abroad where your help is needed and you get the opportunity to witness these astounding creatures in their natural habitat.

🐆 Best Places to Volunteer with Animals in Africa

Are you wondering: Where will I go as a wildlife conservation volunteer in Africa? Most of Africa’s impressive wildlife is situated in the southern part of the continent. There are a great number of projects to choose from in South Africa which is known for its abundant wildlife both on land and in the sea. Other excellent destinations with great wildlife programs are Namibia , Zimbabwe , Ghana , Botswana , and Malawi .

Although the number of projects is less abundant in these areas, the projects are not less spectacular. Volunteer in Africa with animals and there is no doubt you are in for an experience of a lifetime. Take a closer look at the different wildlife programs we have to offer in this part of the world.

🦒 How do I Volunteer in Africa with Animals?

Have you been thinking of taking a volunteering trip to work in Afrika with animals? You are not sure where to begin? There are Let’s see how planning a volunteer trip can be done in 5 simple and easy steps:

Decide on the type of volunteer program you wish to work for

Volunteering is always a unique experience and each animal conservation project in Africa will be different. Tasks will depend on the project you have selected but we can give you an idea of what you can expect when you decide to do volunteer work in Africa with animals. In wildlife conservation projects, volunteers won’t get as close to the animals but they will spend a lot of time in nature where they will help protect these species.

Each program will have a different specialty. One program may focus more on the research aspect and finding out more about a certain species while another program will have as their main aim to protect their habitat. This will entail more maintenance work of the reserve for example. Here are a few tasks you can expect as a wildlife conservation volunteer in Africa . Projects will include tasks like:

  • Observing and tracking animals; game count
  • Telemetry tracking and research
  • Restoration and rehabilitation of the reserve and landscapes
  • Maintenance of the reserve as healthy breeding ground
  • Alien plant removal
  • Find the volunteer organization that fits your requirements
  • Speak with the program advisors
  • Make your travel bookings in advance
  • Prepare for your volunteer trip

Animal sanctuaries are focused on helping injured or sick animals. This type of program will have more hands-on work where you may get the chance to get close to the wildlife. Tasks as a wildlife volunteer for wildlife volunteer programs in Africa may include the following:

  • Caring for African animals
  • Preparing food and feeding
  • Cleaning and maintaining enclosures
  • General farm work
  • Educating visitors

Be sure to do some research on each program to find out exactly what they stand for and what their objective is. This will give you the best idea of what type of work you will doing during your volunteer experience. University students who are studying geography may be more interested in the research-heavy voluntary work while others may want to take their minds off work or studying and are looking for some physical labor.

There’s no denying the magnetic pull elephants have on folks drawn to wildlife. Massive and majestic, the world’s largest living land mammals are more than gentle giants. They’re intelligent, caring, and curious, and they fascinate people with the deep social bonds they develop.

But elephants also face deep existential threats. If you’re looking for opportunities to get involved with wildlife conservation volunteering , learning how to volunteer with elephants in Africa is a first step to making a meaningful difference for vulnerable elephant populations. You can do it by finding a project that prioritizes the best interests of elephants and making sure you have any skills the project you want to support requires.

Is it a good idea to volunteer with elephants in Africa?

elephant standing in a grassy field

You’ll never forget your time volunteering with elephants.

Africa is home to the African forest elephant and the African savanna elephant. These two species are now both endangered .

Key to their ecosystems, elephants in Africa face threats due to poaching, habitats lost to human activities, and human-wildlife conflict . Elephant conservation efforts look to stabilize or increase elephant populations in habitats protected from human disruption while also taking the wellbeing of the local human population into account.

It’s a great idea to help with elephant conversation as a volunteer—as long as you know how to spot ethical volunteer projects that prioritize the elephants they claim to support. Finding a place to volunteer ethically with elephants starts with researching a volunteer organization’s practices and making sure you meet a program’s requirements so you can make a meaningful contribution to elephant conservation.

Are there requirements to volunteer with elephants in Africa?

Most programs will have basic requirements, such as English or other language proficiency and a minimum age requirement. Programs may also ask you to undergo a background check before signing up or to provide a doctor’s certificate that demonstrates you can meet a project’s health and fitness demands.

Depending on the work you’ll do, you may need to come in with specific skills (think: academic background or physical abilities) so you can actively contribute. And depending on your destination and length of time abroad, you may need to get required vaccinations and a visa before you travel, too.

Your best bet is to carefully read the project description for requirements, and when in doubt, ask the organization! You want to be sure you have what it takes to volunteer on a specific project, and pick a program that fits with your skills and abilities so you can make a positive difference while remaining culturally aware . No matter the work you’re doing, soft skills like patience, tolerance, and flexibility will go a long way.

How to volunteer with elephants in Africa

Volunteering with elephants in Africa means making a real contribution to wildlife conservation. You’ll get to actively support these magnificent creatures while learning about another culture and building an international network with like-minded volunteers. Throw in some outdoor adventure and you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Here’s how to make it happen:

1. Choose where and when to go

elephants in etosha national park

Namibia is one of the most incredible places to volunteer with elephants.

Ethical organizations often do their work with elephants outside of big cities, minimizing contact with humans while allowing the gentle giants to freely roam in their habitats. You’ll find projects that let you volunteer with elephants in Africa in places like Namibia , South Africa, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.

You can volunteer for just a few weeks or go for a longer volunteering experience ( like a sabbatical !). Consider the climate of the area and physical demands of a project when you’re deciding where and for how long you’ll volunteer.

2. Make sure you meet program requirements and have necessary skills

Volunteer work with elephants in Africa can be physically demanding, so make sure you have the skills required for any program that interests you. Research a project’s living arrangements and facilities to adequately prepare for your time abroad .

You may not have the bathroom facilities, internet connection, or other comforts of home you’re used to, and your volunteer work may require long days in extreme weather and unfamiliar terrain.

Self-awareness is one of the most important qualities of a volunteer —honestly assess whether you’re a good fit for a project before applying. You don’t want to do more harm than good by placing an unnecessary burden on the project staff and local community if you’re not comfortable sticking with what a project needs.

3. Pick a program

two elephants silhouetted against a sunset

The ideal volunteer program will be reputable, ethical, and willing to answer questions.

It’s time to choose your volunteer program now that you know where and when you want to head to Africa. Look for an organization and project that aligns with your values and goals while prioritizing the best interests of the elephants—not a social-media-ready volunteer experience. You’re in it for the conservation, research, and rehabilitation, not the photo ops. The organization should be, too.

Our best recommendation is Natucate , who are recognized as an ethical volunteer agency by the Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH).

Pro-tip: If you’re currently a student, ask a study abroad advisor for advice! Your university may already have partnerships with organizations in Africa that do volunteer work with elephants.

4. Apply for programs

After you’ve narrowed down a list of projects that fit your goals and skills, it’s time to start putting your dream into reality. Check that you meet all the requirements and gather any documents you need. Then, submit your application, and get ready to get some good news from the organization!

Making a financial plan will help your volunteering dreams come true!

Working out your budget before you touch down can help ensure you have a good experience abroad. Include costs like your program fee, accommodations, and flights when building your budget. Understanding what’s included (and not included) in your program fee is essential, so don’t be afraid to ask questions .

6. Take care of pre-departure requirements like visas and vaccinations

Where you choose to go (and how long you’ll stay) will impact whether you need a visa to travel. You’ll also need to look into vaccination requirements for your destination. Do your research early so you’re not scrambling ahead of your flight, and check with your doctor and host organization for advice about any recommended and required vaccinations or medications for where you’re going.

7. Book your flight

You have your documents in order and your place and dates on a project confirmed, and it’s time to reserve your flight . Check with your volunteer organization—they may provide assistance with things like travel arrangements and booking flights that will help streamline your preparations. Now, get packing !

How much does it cost to volunteer with elephants in africa.

elephant throwing dust on itself

Don’t be put off by cost—there are scholarship and grant opportunities available.

Though your total budget will depend a lot on the program you choose and the amount of time you spend volunteering abroad, program fees for one-month programs range from around $2,500 to $5,000. However, you can definitely find programs more affordable than that! For example, Natucate’s program starts at 1250€ per month .

Make sure you know what your volunteer program fee includes so you can account for costs you’ll need to cover yourself.

When budgeting for the time you’ll spend volunteering with elephants in Africa, consider factors such as:

  • Program fee: Program fees, and what they include, vary by organization and project. Your program fee will also depend on the length of time you sign up to volunteer. Do your research! Volunteer organizations should be transparent with costs, and this information will help you plan ahead.
  • Accommodation: You’ll likely pay for accommodation on site as part of your program fee. If there are parts of your stay that aren’t included, you’ll need to pay for (and sometimes arrange) that housing.
  • Meals: Your program fee may include some (or all!) meals while you’re working on a project, but you’ll want some extra spending money for snacks and drinks.
  • Transportation: Volunteers typically pay for their own flights. Research what other transportation you’ll need to cover, such as transfers to and from the airport.
  • Medical/travel insurance and other medical costs: You may be required to have medical or travel insurance for your trip . You may also need to pay for any medications or vaccinations if those are required.
  • Visa costs: If you need a visa for your volunteer destination, remember to account for visa fees in your budget.
  • Personal expenses: Figure out how much you want to spend on tours, excursions, and any travel you do on your own. And don’t forget about gifts, souvenirs, and other personal expenses.
