The Perfect Weekend Getaway: Newport From New York City and Boston

Kelsy Chauvin

Our new series on weekend road trips aims to inspire you for what's to come as we slowly return to travel.

Covid-19 Disclaimer: Make sure to check the status of the states , regions, and establishments in which you’re planning to visit prior to travel. Many regions continue to see high infection rates and deaths, while many states and counties remain under varying stay-at-home orders. Those traveling from areas with high rates of Covid-19 should consider avoiding travel for now in order to reduce spread.

The Gilded Age left its mark on Newport like nowhere else in America. There are mansions, yachts, and a polo club, not to mention St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where Jacqueline Bouvier married then Senator John F. Kennedy in 1953.

Yet, this coastal Rhode Island city has the everyday charm of a quintessential New England hamlet. Natural scenery is picture-perfect even in winter, though summer sun makes the shoreline sparkle as it summons weekend visitors for seafood and local brews.

Across the Sakonnet River (really a tidal strait), Newport gives way to more nature in historic Little Compton. The town remains untouched by the past centuries’ urban development thanks to its isolated perch on Rhode Island’s South Coast, where early colonists began settling in 1692, leaving relics for 21st-century explorers to visit.

Here’s a closer look at the best of Newport and Little Compton for a breezy Atlantic getaway.

GETTING THERE

From New York City, Newport is a little more than a three-hour drive, mostly along I-95. It’s faster from Boston, just over an hour into downtown Newport, the longest stretch on highway MA-24. Either drive will eventually lead to a pinch point as traffic narrows to the bridges onto Aquidneck Island, so avoid peak travel times to save time and make your arrival more enjoyable.

Newport fills out compact Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay, so visitors here can enjoy plenty of waterfront leisure time. The city’s also been called the “Sailing Capital of the World,” and hosted the America’s Cup sailing regatta for 50 years, so sights of schooners, cruisers, and yachts here seem as common as cars.

For your first day in town, then, it seems fitting to find a lovely spot for a bite or a drink with a harbor view. Along the main drag that is America’s Cup Avenue, settle into the Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar for a fine meal of chowder, stuffed clams, signature sandwiches, Italian dishes, and more, either indoors or on the covered terrace. If you’re feeling casual, the Lobster Shack on the Long Wharf is the place to grab a lobster roll, fish and chips, and other straight-from-the-bay seafood to enjoy on dockside picnic tables.

As far back 1906, when the first Rolls Royce was introduced, wealthy Americans summering in Newport wanted to cruise its shores—and show off their fancy motor cars. Ocean Drive became the perfect 10-mile loop to do so while cooling off by the water. Today, you can rent your own vintage car or hire a car and driver from Newport Classic Cars to tour you along the loop. Or make the journey on two wheels with a bike rental from Newport Bicycle , and enjoy the bike lanes along the loop.

If you’re feeling indoors-y, the Newport Art Museum is a treasure trove of American paintings, prints, drawings, and temporary exhibits (though just FYI, it closes at 5 pm daily, and all day Mondays). For a unique local history, visit Touro Synagogue , America’s oldest synagogue dating to the early 18th century.

By dinnertime, follow Gladys Carr Bollhouse Road across the bay to Goat Island, where you can dine on divine Italian and seafood dishes at indoor/outdoor Scarpetta , inside Gurney’s Newport Resort. If you’re curious about Newport’s local craft brews paired with one of the best local raw bars, don’t miss friendly Midtown Oyster Bar , with a big bar, roomy dining room, and harborside tables. Cap off your evening with a cocktail or glass of champagne at the posh Roof Deck Bar at The Vanderbilt, and take in one of the top vistas in town. (Side note: The Vanderbilt also hosts fun mixology classes for hotel guests.)

Rise early if you want to catch Newport’s brilliant Atlantic sunrise, and head to the Bellevue Historic District for breakfast at no-frills, local’s-favorite diner Annie’s on Bellevue . Fill up on breakfast any time of day, or go right to lunch with lobster mac-n-cheese, homemade bisque, and other tasty, affordable dishes.

Then set off down Bellevue Avenue on an ever-so-grand tour of Newport Mansions , a collection of 11 “summer cottages” built by Gilded Age magnates with names like Vanderbilt, Astor, and Belmont. The Breakers is the top draw, and its grounds alone are worth a peek, not to mention its 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style palatial interior. But each mansion has its own personality, and together they are part of the Bellevue Avenue Historic District , a designated National Historic Landmark.

At One Bellevue inside the Hotel Viking, chitchat over a proper Victorian tea service on weekends complete with sandwiches, scones, and truffles.

Newport’s unique oceanside perch makes it a beachy destination, with access to Atlantic Beach and longer Easton Beach, both sandy havens facing Easton Bay. Bring a towel for sunbathing and swimming, or grab snacks and a pitcher of cold beer at Flo’s Clam Shack on Wave Avenue (open seasonally).

Then head west for Newport’s famous Cliff Walk , a 3.5-mile walking trail that begins beside the Chanler Hotel . The walk starts as a paved path flanked by the ocean on one side and mansions on the other. After a mile or so, the 40 Steps staircase invites a climb down to the shore, or just keep walking along the rocky trail for lovely, secluded sea views.

Emerge from the cliffs and return to the comfort of Newport’s bay side, where you can head to The Landing on Bowens Wharf for open-air bar seating and a long drink menu with local beers and spirits. You can dine there, or zest up your dinner with barbeque at the Smokehouse , serving ribs and pulled pork, plus hearty salads and gluten-free dishes. For something different and delicious, duck into Umi Asian Cuisine for Newport’s top sushi, hibachi, and Asian fusion.

Afterward, head to the speakeasy-style Boom Boom Room, a flirty dance club downstairs at the fancy Clarke Cooke House . Or get your groove going at the Newport Blues Café , the city’s top live-music venue that hosts new and familiar musicians across all genres.

Start your Sunday with brunch at Stoneacre Brasserie , where you’ll find breakfast standards and more adventurous dishes, like braised pork chili verde, seasonal vegetable hash, and a lovely assortment of toasts (ricotta and orange with honey is delightful).

Hop into your car for a half-hour drive up and over the Sakonnet River to check out Little Compton. It doesn’t have to be summer to enjoy a walk on South Shore Beach or Briggs Beach, where waves crashing on the rocky shore may send you into full zen mode. This village is all about history, though, so spend time exploring the Little Compton Town Common, a preserved site home to the United Congregational Church (circa 1835) and Union Cemetery, where the oldest grave dates to 1692.

This isolated spot, believe it or not, has its very own winery. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard opened in 1975 on 150 acres of land, and today has its own tasting room to sample award-winning whites, reds, and roses; plus a mercantile to pick up locally-made souvenirs.

WHERE TO STAY

There is no shortage of hotels in Newport as seasonal traffic peaks in summer, but still draws lots of travelers in fall, winter, and spring. On Goat Island, Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina is a good choice for Narragansett Bay views, a spa, and good indoor/outdoor dining and drinking options. Regal lodging awaits at Hotel Viking and The Vanderbilt , both centrally-located and just as sophisticated as when they opened around a century ago. The Wayfinder is a cool, newer boutique hotel just north of downtown by Miantonomi Memorial Park.

Warm months are gorgeous in this pocket of coastal Rhode Island, where the ocean air cools even the hottest temperatures. Clambakes, beach time, and open-air dining and drinking are irresistible. Peak-season visitors should reserve hotel rooms and restaurant tables in advance. You may consider joining a newportFILM Outdoors screening, a Newport Polo tailgate party, or August’s famous Newport Jazz Festival . During winter, Newport Mansions doll up with holiday cheer, as does the rest of the sparkly city.

The Perfect Weekend in Newport, Rhode Island: My 3 Day Newport Itinerary

Headed to New England and looking for the perfect long weekend in Newport, Rhode Island itinerary?! I promise you, after spending 3 days in Newport, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to make it over here!

Newport is the epitome of a coastal New England town. Think opulent, gilded-age historic mansions. A buzzing waterfront district with shops, art, and frozen lemonades. Multi-million dollar yachts and exclusive beach clubs. Seafood pasta and delicious lobster rolls. Breathtaking coastal paths and drives right on the water. A vibrant sailing culture and sunset boat rides.

weekend in Newport, Rhode Island

If this chic seaside town sounds like your kinda fun, you’ll wanna plan your 3-day Newport weekend getaway right away!

Growing up on Long Island, I spent over 25 years less than 5 hours away from Newport. Someone please tell me why it took me moving across the country 10 years ago to come back and finally visit. If I had known just how chic and charming it was, I’d 100% gone way sooner!

So when I recently visited my sister in NY and she suggested a long weekend in Newport, RI, of course I happily agreed! I mean, who can say no to lobster rolls and sunset sails?! Not this girl, haha. She’s been to Newport a few times, so I was lucky that she offered to show me around and take me to her fave spots!

Get ready for that perfect East Coast summer! But before we get into the perfect weekend in Newport RI itinerary, there’s lots of logistics to get outta the way first!

Psst : I’m aiming to visit all 50 states, and Rhode Island was my 29th state on my 50 States Challenge !

Weekend in Newport Itinerary Logistics

weekend in Newport, Rhode Island

Where is Newport, RI and How to Get There

Newport is located on the coast of Rhode Island, which is actually the smallest of all the US states. It’s located in the heart of New England, bordered by Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east.

And get this – Newport is actually located on an island, Aquidneck Island in Newport County to be exact, found in the southeastern part of the state. It’s the largest island in Rhode Island, separated from the mainland by the Sakonnet River to the east and Mount Hope Bay to the north. Don’t worry, there’s lots of bridges connecting the island to other parts of Rhode Island!

Newport sits on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Narragansett Bay to the west. This means lots of gorgeous coastal views, scenic walks, beaches, and harbors.

Flying to Newport, RI

If you’re coming from further afield, plan to fly into Boston Logan International Airport in Boston, MA . The airport’s only about 70 miles from Newport, and you’re bound to find the cheapest flights there.

There’s actually also an airport in Rhode Island itself (T.F. Green Airport (PVD) in Warwick, Rhode Island), but flights will most likely be much pricier. If you do find a good flight, snatch that baby right up because the airport’s less than 30 miles away from Newport.

Driving to Newport

Thankfully, Newport is pretty close to some major cities in New England, so it’s not terribly difficult to get to!

  • From Providence, RI: 30 miles away, 45 minutes – the capital of Rhode Island!
  • From Boston, MA: 75 miles away, 1 ½ hours
  • From Hartford, CT: 85 miles away; 1 ½ hours
  • From New Haven, CT: 100 miles away, 2 hours
  • From Martha’s Vineyard, MA: 90 miles away, 2 ½ hours (route includes an inevitable ferry crossing)
  • From Portland, ME: 175 miles away, 3 hours
  • From Manhattan, NY: 180 miles away, 4 hours
  • From Nassau County, NY: 185 miles away, 4 hours

If you’re doing an East Coast road trip, definitely consider adding a few of these into your longer itinerary! The East Coast in general (especially the New England states) are so underrated!

Taking the Ferry to Newport

Since Newport’s on an island (Aquidneck Island!), you can also take a seasonal ferry from a few spots, namely Providence, Block Island, and Martha’s Vineyard. Taking the ferry is way more fun than driving, but it’s a lot more expensive and may not save you much time if you don’t plan it out right.

If you’re coming from Long Island like we were, it may actually make sense to take a ferry! Plus, you can skip some of that nasty NYC traffic. There aren’t any ferries that dock in Newport itself from Long Island, but you can get kinda close!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Instead of driving the island, up and around NYC, and back east to Newport, you cross the Long Island Sound. Taking the ferry drastically cuts down on driving time, but it’s pretty pricey, about $85-95 each way for 2 people plus the car.

Check the ferry schedule here and reserve your tickets in advance. Ferries do sell out, especially in the prime summer months. There’s about 35-50 spots for cars.

Note that depending where you’re coming from, there’s two different ferry options.

  • Orient Point (Suffolk County) to New London, then about an hour drive to Newport
  • Port Jefferson (Nassau County) to Bridgeport, then about 2 hours to Newport

Regardless of the ferry which makes most sense for you, you’ll need to arrive at the ferry port a half hour ahead of time.

For reference, we took the ferry one way from Orient Point to New London, and decided to drive back home at the end of our trip. To make sure we got to Newport early on our first morning, we spent the night in Greenport beforehand.

Train and Bus to Newport

Unfortunately, there’s no major train that serves Newport itself, but you’ll find Amtrak trains headed to nearby Providence. There’s also a seasonal train called the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad, which operates from Portsmouth to Newport during the busy summer months. And it’s pretty scenic, so no complaints there!

If you’re already in Rhode Island, check out the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) for buses that connect Newport with other parts of the state.

How to Get Around Newport

During our weekend in Newport, we found it relatively easy to get around!

On foot: Since Newport is such a compact little city, we walked a ton! Our hotel was walking distance from Bowen’s and Bannisters Wharfs, lots of restaurants and shops, and even where our trolley tour picked us up. Definitely wear some comfy shoes – we got almost 20k steps a day!

Trolley Tours: We took a trolley tour our first afternoon and it was a great way to get to know the area right away! These tours drive you around to the main attractions in the city, all while explaining some history and info on landmarks. Highly recommended!

Free bus: Yes, there’s a FREE (seasonal) bus in Newport, Rhode Island! Woooo! Look for the classic RIPTA green and gold hybrid trolley buses around town.

You’ll want to hop on Route 67, which takes you to some of Newport’s most popular destinations, like the Newport Mansions, Cliff Walk, Audrain Automobile Museum, International Tennis Hall of Fame, and more.

By Car: If you wanna explore a bit further than the main downtown area near the wharfs, you’ll need a vehicle. We drove around Newport a bit on our last day – to get to the Cliff Walk, drive a portion of Ocean Drive, and do some quick last minute shopping at the wharf before heading back home.

Thankfully there’s paid lots around town (and even a few free ones), but these spots get taken rather fast, so plan to park on the earlier side. Wanna head to the beaches in Middletown and/or stop at some wineries? A car will be helpful!

When to Spend a Weekend in Newport, RI

Summer – Peak High Season: June to August

Newport is a warm-weather destination for sure. Everyone flocks to this cute nautical town once the weather warms up – summer in Newport is totally poppin! Why? The weather is just perfect for enjoying the beaches, going sailing, and walking the Cliff Walk (although it can be a tad too hot in the afternoon).

Just know you won’t be the only ones there – expect lots of crowds, and higher accommodation prices. If there’s any special restaurants you wanna go to (HIGHLY recommend The Mooring), make a reservation in advance.

If you’re not interested in the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival (both in summer), plan your weekend in Newport around these festivals. It’ll be exceptionally crowded these times!

For reference, we visited Newport in early June mid-week. It wasn’t as crowded as I expected it to be, but I can only imagine just how busy it is on the weekends in July. I’d definitely visit midweek if you can during the prime summer season!

We had beautiful cool mornings and mild afternoons, with just a tad of rain. Locals told us summer weather hadn’t yet arrived, and it felt like winter was lasting forever, haha.

weekend in Newport, Rhode Island

Shoulder Seasons – Spring (April – May) & Fall (September – October)

Spring and Fall bring mild weather, ranging from the 50s to 70s F. You can expect smaller crowds, and still enjoy all that Newport has to offer – visit the mansions, explore the wharf areas, and even go on a sunset sail.

Plus, the flowers are blooming in spring (with some great festivals), and there’s even some fall foliage (and harvest festivals) come September/October.

Winter – Off Season: November through March

Winter is most definitely the off-season in Newport. The weather is much colder (30s and 40s F, sometimes even 20s), and there’s way fewer tourists. Plus lots of SNOW and festive holiday decorations!

But this just means discounted hotels, quieter attractions, and time to cozy up in quaint cafes. Prepare for below freezing temps at night though – you’ll definitely need your full winter attire. It sure gets quite frosty!

Do note that some mansions and attractions may have limited hours during the off-season.

Note: You may wanna skip Tuesdays/Wednesdays year round, as some shops and restaurants are closed, especially in the off season. But as many people spend long weekends in Newport, this just means it’ll be less crowded these days. Your pick!

Brief History of Newport

All this glitz and glam must’ve come from somewhere of course! Newport traces its roots back to the colonial era when it was founded in 1639. Quickly, the city flourished as a bustling trading and seaport, attracting merchants and shipbuilders.

weekend in Newport, Rhode Island

Due to its strategic location along the Atlantic coast, it was a vital hub for the triangular trade, where goods were exchanged between Europe, Africa, and the American colonies. This trade brought tons of wealth to Newport, seen in the opulent mansions that were built during the Gilded Age (late 19th and early 20th centuries).

The city’s historic architecture reflects the prosperity of this era, with magnificent mansions like The Breakers and Marble House standing as testaments to the wealth and lavish lifestyles of the industrialists and elites who once called Newport home.

Where to Stay in Newport

Face it, if you’ve only got a weekend in Newport (or at most 3 days), you wanna make sure you stay in a convenient location! If it’s your first time to the area, I’d choose a hotel within walking distance to the wharf, or at least in Newport proper itself.

Downtown Newport

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

  • Serenity Inn: A bed and breakfast on the National Register of Historic Places (built in 1885). This is where my sister and I stayed, and it was such a cute spot in such a perfect location. It felt more like staying in a friend’s home instead of a hotel, and we devoured the included breakfasts each and every morning. Only a few blocks from the wharf, and super homey and cozy. Request room 9 – lots of character (with the cutest wallpaper) and bright and airy.
  • The Brenton Hotel : Chic and classy with tons of natural light, this spot right on the water is pretty pricey, but worth the splurge for a special occasion. We visited one afternoon for the rooftop views, and they definitely didn’t disappoint. Plus, the hotel’s down the block from one of the best lobster spots in the entire city!
  • Castle Hill Inn : A GORGEOUS upscale inn right on Ocean Drive (an absolute must), but a bit removed from the downtown area. I’d only stay here if you’re renting a car, and got some cash to blow (it’s expensive). A great pick if you want a more relaxed, romantic trip – think Atlantic Ocean views, breezy rooms in a landmark Victorian mansion, and a fabulous great lawn with amazing cocktails at sunset.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Looking to save some cash (more money to spend on lobster rolls, am I right?!). Middletown is another town on Aquidneck Island, north of Newport and south of Portsmouth. Hence the name, Middletown! Staying here will be less expensive, quieter, and introduce you to a bunch of restaurants/activities (like Purgatory Chasm!) you probably wouldn’t have visited otherwise.

Middletown is actually quite large, so if you’re planning to stay here, I recommend choosing a hotel near Easton’s Beach (like Wyndham Newport Hotel with its cozy fire pits, friendly staff, and free shuttle – an absolute must!).

Is a Weekend in Newport really enough?

I think so! We spent 2 nights and about 2.5 days in Newport, and felt we got to see the town’s highlights.

Personally, I felt pretty satisfied with our ~3 days in Newport. It was the perfect amount of time to see the main attractions of the city, eat a bunch of lobster rolls and seafood pasta, go on an afternoon sail , admire the gilded mansions on Ocean Drive, learn some history on a trolley tour , watch sunset at Bannister’s Wharf, and even spend a few hours wandering and shopping down on Thames Street.

We hardly felt rushed – Newport is a great spot for a quick weekend getaway.

If you wanna take a day trip or two (to maybe Middletown, the beaches, wineries, and/or even Providence), plan 4 or 5 full days. Since it’s not a massive city, spending any longer is probably overkill if you’re not breaking up your trip.

Other FAQs About Newport

  • Does Newport have a beach? Yes, and quite a few actually! With over 400 miles of beautiful coastline in the Newport area, there’s several public beaches nearby. The largest of these is Easton’s Beach – locally known as First Beach. There’s also Sachuest Beach (Second Beach), Third Beach (in Middletown), and Rejects Beach (smaller and lesser-known), plus a few private beach clubs you need to be a member of.
  • What are some must-try foods in Newport? Any weekend in Newport needs to include a lobster roll (a classic New England favorite), clam chowder (oh so creamy!), Rhode Island-style calamari (crispy calamari rings in a tangy sauce), and of course my favorite – Del’s Frozen Lemonade (kinda like a lemon slushie).
  • Should I plan a bachelorette party in Newport? Totally! It’s the perfect spot for a “nauti”cal themed bach party, haha. Think a day at the wineries, indulging in lobster rolls, morning walks on the Cliff Walk, a mimosa boat ride (“last sail before the veil” anyone?!), and even a sports car mansion tour. Can’t miss cocktails at Castle Hill Inn at sunset, too!

Finally, what you came here for – the perfect long weekend in Newport itinerary! Let’s get to it!

The Best Weekend in Newport, RI Itinerary

Psst: This Newport itinerary assumes you have 2 or 3 full days in the city. Meaning you got here the night before and can start your first full day in the morning. You can probably squeeze everything in on Day 1 if you arrive in the AM (like we did), but depending on your travel style, you may feel kinda rushed.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Unlike most of my itineraries, this weekend in Newport itinerary isn’t super-crazy jam packed. One of the best parts about a trip to Newport is just taking in the nautical atmosphere. Like enjoying the yacht-ridden coastline at a cozy cafe or strolling the wharf with some frozen lemonade in hand. No need to rush around these parts; take it slow and just enjoy!

Weekend in Newport Day 1

We arrived in Newport mid-morning , after taking the ferry from Eastern Long Island. And with only a weekend in Newport, we quickly dropped off our bags and promptly started exploring!

Stop 1: Explore and wander Bowen’s Wharf and Bannister’s Wharf

If you like a mix of shopping, dining, and scenic views, you’ve gotta come to the wharf! And there’s actually two, within walking distance to each other. We found ourselves at both wharfs multiple times during our weekend in Newport, and I think you will, too! They’re both so charming, with cobblestone streets and honestly tons to do.

Plus loads of food – from casual seafood shacks to upscale waterfront restaurants.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Here’s a few highlights not to miss:

Check out the shops: There’s loads of cute shops around here, with everything from clothing, jewelry, home decor, and of course nautical-themed souvenirs. We bought souvenir sweatshirts from Newport Breeze, loved SeaBags, and of course browsed everything within the Kiel James Patrick Flagship Store.

Sip some Del’s Frozen Lemonade: Any Newport itinerary NEEDS to include some Del’s Frozen Lemonade, you’ll quickly see why. It’s practically synonymous with summertime in Newport! I mean, they’ve been serving their signature frozen lemonade since the 40s, so you know it’s good!

The lemonade tastes so sweet and refreshing (especially on a hot summer day), without that gross artificial sugary taste. An iconic local treat in Newport – don’t miss it! There’s a few stands and trucks throughout Newport, but you’ll find one of their main locations right at the wharf.

Stop 2: Indulge in a lobster roll (or two)

Time to enjoy a quintessential New England seafood treat – the beloved lobster roll! Thankfully, there’s a few spots to indulge at the wharf and nearby.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

  • The Lobster Bar: Located right at the edge of Bowen’s Wharf, this spot has both the classic New England lobster roll (made up of cold lobster salad in a bun) or Connecticut-style (stuffed with warm lobster tossed with a little melted butter). Great views of Newport Harbor in an airy space!
  • Luke’s Lobster Newport: We wanted something quick and casual (with picnic-style seating), so chose to grab some rolls at Luke’s Lobster (and how funny that they actually have a location in San Francisco , haha). The rolls are also a tad cheaper than others, probably since it’s oh so casual.
  • The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar: Huge lobster rolls (literally STUFFED to the brim) in such a chic and fun space – this place is such a vibe! Make sure to request an outdoor table for fantastic views of the harbor and sea. Psst – the seafood pasta, bag o donuts (lobster fritters), and scallop chowder are all amazing too. Gets busy so make a reservation (we ate here later on in the trip for dinner – highly recommended).
  • Newport Lobster Shack: By far the BEST spot in Newport for lobster rolls, as the lobster shack works with the fishermen that very morning. It’s essentially a food truck on the water serving up Maine style lobster rolls – cold with mayo and celery. If that’s your jam (I much prefer the warm and buttery CT-style), you can’t go wrong! Grab some sides too, like corn and chowder!

If you don’t get to all of this before your trolley tour don’t fret — we found ourselves back at the wharf a handful of times during our weekend in Newport

Stop 3: Take a Historic Trolley Tour

One of my favorite things to do when first arriving in a new-to-me destination is to take a walking tour. And while Newport doesn’t offer many of those, they’ve got something even better – a trolley tour . Especially helpful when it’s a little too toasty to be wandering around for hours in the heat.

On the trolley tour, we learned all about Newport’s landmarks and history, plus tons of interesting historical facts and fun stories. Plus a few dad jokes, because who doesn’t love those?

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

This is the exact trolley tour we took and we loved it – not only did it include all the city highlights (and then some), but it made a stop at The Breakers! This made it exceptionally easy for us since we didn’t wanna have to move the car from the hotel parking lot until we absolutely needed to, haha.

A few highlights included the historic mansions along Bellevue Avenue, Fort Adams State Park, Ocean Drive, Newport Harbor, International Tennis Hall of Fame, Brenton Point State Park, the Marble House, and The Rosecliff Mansion (where The Great Gatsby was filmed!).

I’m so glad we signed up for it – we passed by so many of Newport’s most popular points of interest, and didn’t need to navigate or find parking once! A must if you’re not a fan of driving and/or wanna learn about the city’s history and unique tidbits!

Stop 4: Tour a Gilded Mansion or Two

No weekend in Newport is complete without touring a historic Gilded Age mansion! These stunning mansions, more like European castles and palaces (!!!), were once home to famous families like the Vanderbilts, Kennedys, and the Astors.

Why were they built? So they could all display their wealth and high social status to each other, haha. Yes, these were all private homes – kinda insane.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Opulent. Extravagant. And over the top. All built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And once you see these “summer cottages”, you won’t believe that they were only used for a few months as wealthy summer retreats – how wild is that?!

Rich families would leave their primary residences in nearby cities (like New York , Boston, and Philly) during the hot summer months and head to their grand Newport estates. Talk about extra cash!

The city’s historic district (where all of these mansions are located), are now a designated National Historic Landmark. Thankfully, many of these historic Gilded Age mansions are open to the public – so we can all see what it’s like to live like the rich and the famous during America’s Gilded Age. Many are over 25,000 square feet, and some with over 70 rooms.

The Breakers

We decided to check out The Breakers, an iconic U.S. National Historic Landmark built in 1895 for the Vanderbilt family. Only one of the wealthiest and most influential families during the Gilded Age…

And OMG were we blown away. Not only is The Breakers the largest (and most famous) summer cottage in the area, but it’s actually Rhode Island’s most visited tourist attraction. So don’t expect to have the mansion all to yourself!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

In the 125,000 square foot mansion (yes, told you it’s beyond huge), you’ll find lavish interiors, over 70 rooms, intricate details, opulent furnishings and carvings, and exquisite artwork. Including a grand staircase made entirely of white Italian marble (the dream!), elaborate ceiling frescoes, and stunning mosaic tiles throughout. Plus stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from plenty of the rooms.

All designed and inspired by 16th century Italian Renaissance palaces – with a mix of Classical and Beaux-Arts architectural styles.

The Breakers was used and belonged in the Vanderbilt family until 1948, where it was then sold to The Preservation Society of Newport County. Which is why we the public are able to access it!

If you’ve got more time and/or are particularly interested in opulent mansions/ornate architecture, there’s quite a few other Gilded Age mansions to check out:

  • Marble House: Another Vanderbilt family home, the Marble House was constructed for William K. Vanderbilt and his wife, Alva Vanderbilt. The mansion was inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles (yes, in France), and is well known for its opulent use of marble.
  • Rosecliff : This mansion was commissioned by silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs and designed by Stanford White of the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. Rosecliff is known for its elegant ballroom and stunning gardens – one of the main reasons it was included in many movies, including “The Great Gatsby.”
  • The Elms: The Elms was built for Edward Julius Berwind, a coal magnate, and his wife, Herminie. It’s an excellent example of Italian Renaissance architecture and beautiful terraced gardens.
  • Château-sur-Mer: Constructed in the mid-19th century, Château-sur-Mer is one of the earliest and most elaborate of Newport’s Gilded Age mansions. It showcases a mix of Gothic, Italianate, and Second Empire architectural styles.

Stop 5: Seafood Dinner

First night of your long weekend in Newport? You gotta get some seafood – Newport’s absolutely famous for that! It’s a coastal destination afterall (with a rich maritime heritage!), so it’s practically renowned for its seafood! Think succulent lobster dishes, creamy clam chowder, fresh oysters, and tons of white fish. Yumm….

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

While there’s tons of restaurants to choose from, here’s a few popular spots:

  • The Red Parrot Restaurant: A huge menu with surf n turf, oysters, lobster rolls (can never have too many!), and even (lobster!) pizza and pasta. Plus lobster bisque and lobster nachos, because why not?! I’ve never eaten here, but my sister raved about her entire meal. It’s super casual (no need to get all dolled up if you don’t want to), great for families, and all housed in a historic 1898 building.
  • Brick Alley Pub: Right on Thames Street, this famous spot in Newport has lobster bisque, lobster rolls, clam chowder, fantastic fish n chips, and even a great all you can eat soup and salad bar (that’s actually fresh). Plus over 250 vintage wines if you’re feeling fancy! Save some room for the brownie – I heard it’s legendary!
  • Midtown Oyster Bar: Where we ate our first night! Such a great seafood-focused menu, with surf ‘n’ turf, a large raw bar, scallop crudo, lobster rolls, char grilled octopus, cod chowder, and a perfectly-balanced charcuterie board. We shared a delicious meal and left pleasantly full and happy!

Newport Itinerary Day 2

Stop 1: Grab iced lattes and pastries at Springline Coffee

Before heading out for the day, stop by Bannister’s Wharf (again!) for some caffeine at Springline Coffee. Kinda a hidden gem at the end of the wharf with the cutest outdoor seating with direct views of the boats and water. We spent an hour or two hanging out here one morning, sipping our cinnamon lattes and enjoying the scenic views.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

They’ve also got muffins, donuts, cookies, and croissants. Plus some fruit cups and yogurt/granola if you’re feeling kinda healthy.

Stop 2: Shopping on Thames Street

Next up on this Newport itinerary – some time on Thames Street, one of the most well-known and vibrant streets in the city!

It runs parallel to the waterfront, with vintage clothing stores, a bunch of souvenir shops, and plenty of eclectic boutiques. I loved the Anchored In Pink Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store (so many fun patterns and prints, despite the high price tags), Ben’s Furniture Store (for tons of nautical themed housewares), and Matriarch (for books, gifts, and colorful prints).

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

We made the mistake of coming to Thames Street a tad too early, and some of the shops weren’t even open yet. I’d plan to venture over to Thames in the late morning as most shops don’t open until 10 or 11am. It’s not a crazy long street (takes about 30-35 minutes to walk the entire thing), but plan at least an hour or two here so you’ve got time for some shopping!

Also, if you’re opting for a later sightseeing cruise, grab some lunch on Thames as well! There’s tons of options, with Wally’s Weiners (casual food and fun vibes), Scales and Shells (more upscale with fresh seafood), and Midtown Oyster Bar (featuring surf n turf and a large raw bar) being some of the more popular spots!

Stop 3: Newport Harbor Sightseeing Cruise

You can’t spend a weekend in Newport without getting out on the water! The city’s got a huge sailing community and nautical feel, so it’d be a shame to miss out. Thankfully, there’s a bunch of sightseeing cruises to choose from.

Depending on the time of day you’d like to set sail, you can choose from a morning mimosa sail, afternoon sail (what we did!), or even a romantic sunset sail!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

On our afternoon sail, we saw the city’s historic waterfront, some stunning mansions, and tons of natural beauty all while cruising along Narragansett Bay. Plus Fort Adams, the Newport Bridge, Castle Hill Lighthouse, and the famous Clingstone house. And learned all about Newport’s rich maritime history.

We chose to book a sightseeing cruise with Gansett Cruises , and have to say, the entire operation is so well-run and such a great experience. The crew was fantastic (and funny), we sipped on Del’s frozen lemonade (a staple on any Newport itinerary), and we saw some insanely huge billion-dollar yachts.

Plus, the narrated tour takes place on an open-air, fully restored lobster boat – how fun is that?! Other companies use classic schooners, catamarans, and/or yachts, but we thought hanging out on a lobster boat sounded the most authentic, considering where we were and all.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Note that many sightseeing cruises in Newport have seasonal availability. They’re typically available from late spring through the fall when the weather is milder and the seas are calmer. Visiting in the prime summer months (mid-June to early-September)? I definitely recommend booking your Newport Harbor Sightseeing Cruise in advance! Don’t miss out due to poor planning!

Stop 4: Rooftop Drinks at The Brenton Hotel

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

After our sightseeing cruise, we popped by The Brenton Hotel to check out their rooftop.

We admittedly came just for the view (since they were still setting up their bar when we arrived), but it looks like a perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink.

Stop 5: Dinner at The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar

If there’s one spot you NEED to go for dinner, it’s The Mooring. Fresh seafood with a hint of creativity and the best views.

Upscale. Airy. And downright delicious. Do not skip this restaurant during your weekend in Newport. It was by far the best meal we had. I’m practically BEGGING you to go. Our entire experience was THAT GOOD. Promise you won’t regret it.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

We feasted on their popular seafood pasta (complete with fresh calamari, shrimp, and scallops), chimichurri chicken with mashed potatoes and veggies (sounds simple but trust me it’s divine), and sipped on a bunch of fruity mocktails.

I also heard great things about the scallop chowder, calamari with fried jalapeños, and their signature “bag of donut” lobster and shrimp fritters – which we kinda wanted to get but knew we’d be wayyyy too full.

A few insider tips for dining at The Mooring:

  • Ask to be seated outside. That’s where the real vibes are. And go a bit before sunset so you can stare out at the yachts and get great views of the water.
  • Make a reservation. In advance. This place gets jam packed for a reason. You don’t wanna miss it.
  • There’s a large parking lot directly in front of the Mooring, so don’t fret if your hotel isn’t within walking distance. Just know that the restaurant cannot offer any kind of validation as the lot is privately owned.

Stop 6: Watch Sunset

End your second day of your Newport itinerary by watching the sunset! Since we finished dinner at tad later than originally planned, we hopped right over to Bowen’s Wharf and watched the sunset from there.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

You can also take a short drive over to Ocean Drive if you’re looking for something a bit more romantic – my sister did that with her husband and her photos looked amazing!

Of course we grabbed some ice cream (complete with a fresh waffle, strawberries, and nutella) from Newport Sticks and Stones afterwards!

Weekend in Newport Itinerary Day 3

Stop 1: Meander on The Cliff Walk / 40 Steps

Imagine wandering along the coast, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and rugged cliffs on one side, and beautifully manicured gardens and historic mansions on the other. It’s picturesque and super chill, and by far one of the most popular things to do on any Newport itinerary. There’s a reason it’s been designated as a National Recreation Trail!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

The Cliff Walk is pretty iconic to the area, so don’t miss it during your weekend in Newport! I totally wish we had more time, as the views are outstanding and I always love an early-morning coastal walk! There’s a reason I live in California after all!

Here’s a bunch of logistical information:

Location and Length of The Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk runs along the eastern shore of Newport, directly along the shoreline in some parts and along the backyards of some (gorgeous!) Gilded Age mansions (The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff) in others.

Since the trail is about 3.5 miles (each way!), don’t feel like you need to walk/hike the entire thing, especially if it’s hot out. From 40 Steps (a popular spot on The Cliff Walk), we walked about 15 minutes in one direction, turned around, and continued on for about 30 more minutes before heading back to the car. Sooo many pretty views.

Trail Difficulty

The Cliff Walk is a combo of paved walkways, rough paths, and even some rocky terrain! Parts of the trail are super easy to navigate, but others are more challenging, so make sure you wear comfy shoes! It all kinda depends which sections you plan to walk – the path we ended up walking near 40 steps was completely paved!

ALSO! The season you visit will have a big impact – you can walk The Cliff Walk in winter, but it’ll probably be more challenging in poor weather (the rocks get especially slippery when wet)!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Parking at The Cliff Walk

Parking can be notoriously difficult at The Cliff Walk, although it really varies depending on the time of year and what time you arrive.

Thankfully, if you get there early, paid parking is pretty easy. We parked right near 40 Steps and had no problems at all (I think we parked around 9:30ish or so at the start of summer – early June). I’d expect it to be way busier late June – September.

A few things to note:

  • There’s a small parking area near the western end of the trail, accessible from Memorial Boulevard. But expect this to fill up fast during peak summer season.
  • Street parking is available on some nearby roads, although it can be limited. ALWAYS read parking signs carefully – you don’t wanna get a ticket!
  • Don’t wanna worry about parking at all? Take the free seasonal green and gold hybrid trolley buses straight to the Cliff Walk (you’ll wanna hop on Route 67).

Stop 2: Cruise down Ocean Drive

Once you get your early morning hike in, it’s time for a drive through the Ocean Drive Historic District.

Expect to see Newport’s Gilded Age Mansions lining the Atlantic Ocean, Hammersmith Farm (where Jackie Kennedy grew up!!!), Castle Hill Inn, tons of breathtaking coastal scenery, Brenton Point State Park, Fort Adams State Park, and even Gooseberry Beach, a favorite summertime spot.

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Ocean Drive is technically a loop (running along the southern tip of Aquidneck Island) along the coastline for about 10 miles.

As the name suggests, Ocean Drive is a road, so don’t expect to make many stops. Plan to drive on the slower end so you can really take in the scenery and all the stunning vistas of the ocean and shoreline.

If you wanna walk a bit, park near Brenton Point State Park – there’s a huge lot here with open green spaces and pristine views of the ocean right next door!

Fun fact – some of these mansions are owned by famous celebrities, like Jay Leno and his wife Mavis. I did a quick Zillow search and there’s some on the market for upwards of 15 million. Imagine waking up to those sweeping ocean views every morning – yes please!

We actually drove this road twice since we loved it so much – once on our historic trolley tour , and once ourselves independently in our own car!

Stop 3: Grab a drink at Castle Hill Inn

Along Ocean Drive, you’ll find Castle Hill Inn tucked into a semi-hidden mini-peninsula on Ocean Avenue. Make the short stop!

Not only is Castle Hill Inn a prestigious and historic luxury hotel, but the grounds are open for visitors! So yes, you can totally check this place out without the high price tag of staying overnight!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

As soon as you walk over, you’ll see the expansive green space overlooking the water – this is The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn, and it’s well worth a bit of your time.

While we just enjoyed relaxing on the adirondack chairs for a bit (and taking in the stunning views of Narragansett Bay), if you come a bit later in the day, you can grab a drink or two. Just know they’ll be on the pricier side (ok, super pricey), but how often are you spending a weekend in Newport?!

I heard the espresso martinis are exceptionally delicious – the perfect spot to spend an afternoon sipping cocktails. Do note they also serve some food, although the menu is pretty limited, so I’d plan to come for drinks only.

Stop 4: Choice Time! Newport Food Tour, Winery, or Beach Time

Depending on your energy levels (and the weather!), there’s lots more to do!

Option 1: Newport Food Tour

Any foodies out there?! Sign up for a Newport Food Tour ! We love taking food tours when we travel (we’ve done them in Rome , San Francisco , Porto , and Mexico ), and always have the best time (besides stuffing our faces with the most delicious food).

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

On a Newport Foodie Stroll , you can expect to indulge in Italian food, ice cream, pizza, chowder, fish tacos, and more. Did someone say homemade Italian appetizers, mahi mahi tacos, gelato/sorbet, and some locals only spots (off the main tourist drags)? Plus, there’s also two alcoholic drinks included throughout the tour!

Not only will you discover (and eat!) some of the best food the area has to offer, but you’ll learn about over 300 years of Newport history. A combined Newport food and history walking tour if you will!

Unfortunately we didn’t have time for a Newport Food Tour during our 3 days in Newport, but my sister did on an earlier trip and highly recommends it. Wear comfy shoes – she told me it’s a lot of walking (almost 2 miles in about 3 hours!)

Note that the Newport Food Tour is seasonal, and runs from early May to mid-October, every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Worth planning your itinerary around.

Option 2: Sip Some Wine and Go on a Winery Tour

If you can’t make the trek out to Sonoma or Napa Valley anytime soon, head on over to the Newport Vineyards ! There’s award-winning wine (my sister said it was outstanding), fresh craft beer, and even farm to table dining experiences on over 100-acres of preserved farmland! Plus, the winery is family owned and operated for nearly 25 years which I love!

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

They’ve even got an onsite brewery – Taproot Brewing Company (which is perfect if you’ve got any beer lovers in your party). And there’s a whole slew of wines, ranging from traditional varietals to refined blends (plus a whole bunch of rosés – super refreshing on a hot Newport day!).

Get a tasting – you get to pick out 4 wines and 4 beers! The vineyard also offers winery tours, where you’ll learn about the Newport Vineyards history, winemaking, and even get a sneak peak into their onsite brewery. Psst – ALL bookings are released one month in advance.

Option 3: Easton’s Beach

Beach time, anyone?! Easton’s Beach (also known as First Beach) is one of the most popular public beaches in Newport. Why’s it so well-loved? It’s super accessible from the downtown area (and even Middletown), meaning you don’t need to drive very far.

The water is relatively calm, there’s a long stretch of sandy shoreline, and there’s lots of amenities, including bathrooms, outdoor showers, changing rooms, and even picnic areas.

Do note Easton’s Beach gets exceptionally crowded in the heat of summer, so decide for yourself if that’s your vibe or not.

So there ya have it – the best way to spend a long weekend in Newport, Rhode Island! Are you hoping to visit soon?!

Weekend trips from NYC

Bear Mountain, NY

1.  Bear Mountain, NY

1hr 15 mins from NYC

In the time it would take to make it across town during rush hour, adventurers can get to Bear Mountain for an easy escape from city madness.

Do this: The state park, situated in the mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River, which offers a bevy of hiking and biking trails, as well as picnic groves, lake and river fishing access, a swimming pool and a zoo.

Stay here: Bear Mountain Inn , originally built in 1915, hosted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower back in the day, and has been extensively renovated to include 15 luxury guest rooms, plus a spa and a restaurant.

Asbury Park, NJ

2.  Asbury Park, NJ

1hr 30mins from NYC

The summertime gay community in this shore town has actually been active since the 1950s—and over the past few years, the scene’s really heated up.

Eat here: MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos, a favorite among both visitors and locals.

Stay here: Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , which was originally designed by noted Beaux Arts architect Whitney Warren.

Beacon, NY

3.  Beacon, NY

Beacon is steeped in history (Beacon Mountain, the tallest point of the Hudson Highlands, played a significant role in the American Revolution), but besides its storied past, it’s also packed with modern-day culture. The city has an arty, indie spirit that attracts…arty, indie people.

Do this:  A former Nabisco box-printing facility on the banks of the Hudson, Dia:Beacon holds collections from the 1960s to the present. Exhibitions meld with works on long-term view from artists including Walter De Maria and Dan Flavin.

Stay here: Sitting at the base of Mount Beacon—a mile and a half from the town’s center—the Swann Inn of Beacon is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Situated in an 1866 Gothic house, it has five uniquely decorated rooms, which all have retro-cool vibes that would make Wes Anderson blush, including the Red Parlor Suite, a romantic respite complete with a friggin’ front porch).

New Hope, PA

4.  New Hope, PA

1hr 45mins from NYC

New Hope is Bucks County’s jewel, unhurried and unassuming, with indie boutiques, seasonal-focused eateries and forget-all-your-troubles B&Bs galore. Between hopping to different quaint spots, be sure to get back to nature. We suggest cruising on a rented bike down the Delaware Canal towpath.

Do this: With 134 acres featuring hundreds of species of native plants (including more than 80 that are rare or endangered) and stunning woodlands and meadows throughout, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers guided walks in addition to talks and workshops (“Focus on Ferns,” anyone?).

Stay here: A AAA Four Diamond winner for eight consecutive years, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is damn swoonworthy. Rooms, like Fountain View and Orchard Retreat, have heated tubs for two—if that’s your bag. For platonic pals, there’s the Penthouse Suite, with its private deck and panoramic views of the property.

New Paltz, NY

5.  New Paltz, NY

1hr 45 mins from NYC

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old.

Do this: Learn about the lives of the 17th-century Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.)

Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House , set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room.

Lake Placid, NY

6.  Lake Placid, NY

The beloved lake is just the beginning: This prime Adirondacks spot features art, shopping, hiking, swimming and one killer mountain.

Do this: If you're already planning to go out to admire all the greenery upstate New York has to offer, visiting The Wild Center is a must if you want to experience truly unreal nature views. That is, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Why? Oh, because when you go, you'll be walking an elevated trail across the Adirondack treetops. No big deal!

Stay here:  The seven-acre, 131-unit Mirror Lake Inn can’t be beat. Every room looks over the lake, and the cozy fireside accommodations (along with two restaurants and a spa) will keep you in your robe late into the day. Or check in to the aesthetic and cozy Eastwind Lake Placid .

Hudson, NY

7.  Hudson, NY

2hrs 20mins from NYC

You’ve probably heard a lot about Hudson , and here’s why: food and antiques. The place does both extremely well—it’s a prime option for rustic fine dining (Ca’Mea) and rare retro finds (just about any storefront on Warren Street). But the other big reason why droves of New Yorkers and, fittingly, DIY businesses and developments are staking their claim on the town is because it’s all ensconced in a gorgeous Hudson River–side environment, dotted with quaint historic homes.

Eat here: The communal, high-end restaurant Wm. Farmer and Sons has a cozy-yet-urban energy, serving up bar snacks, small plates and big plates that make use, whenever possible, of local ingredients.

Stay here:  The Hudson Whaler beautifully blends old-timey flavor with contemporary amenities. Set in an Art Deco building, the hotel has 16 well-appointed guest rooms with sleek, sculptural furnishings that match the Deco tone, as well as free Wi–Fi, an iPad lending library, Keurig coffeemakers, pillow-top mattresses and Lather Aromatherapy bath products.

Phoenicia, NY

8.  Phoenicia, NY

2hrs 30mins from NYC

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple (Phoenicia Diner), there’s a hipster newbie (the Graham & Co.). The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Do this:  Explore downtown Phoenicia, go whitewater tubing on Esopus Creek, or explore Kaaterskill Falls. Phoenicia has plenty of adventures, from mild to wild.

Stay here: Located directly on Esopus Creek in the heart of the Catskills,  Phoenicia Black Bear Campground  is rustic without being primitive. Choose your own adventure: There’s swimming, biking, horseback riding and more nearby.

Shelter Island, L.I.

9.  Shelter Island, L.I.

2hrs 30 mins from NYC

A midsize island just a seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport, NY, and surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiner’s Bay, Shelter Island is all about unwinding, with historic plantations, unassuming cafés, kayaking and, of course, those views that will make your pals rageful that they didn’t join you.

Do this: With more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes, Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve is one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Edged in white by 12 miles of coastline, Mashomack attracts birders and botanists looking for ospreys and a number of rare plants—and regular people like us who just want our Facebook feed to look awesome.

Stay here: Every room at the perennially popular Sunset Beach Hotel has a private sundeck with water views (and loads of Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms, yay). Sunset Beach’s area, with its curving shoreline and spectacular light, is pretty darn similar to the French Riviera.

The Berkshires, MA

10.  The Berkshires, MA

3hrs from NYC

Think of the Berkshires as the Hamptons, minus the nightlife and plus all the art, theater, dance, music and small-town simplicity you could want. Yes, the mountainous region in western Massachusetts has luxury, but it’s served in a laid-back setting. And given its jaw-dropping bucolic backdrop, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, either.

Do this: One of the country’s largest centers for contemporary art, MASS MoCA , which is set in a converted factory building, focuses on large-scale, immersive installations that more conventional museums just can’t handle. There’s just as much focus on performing arts as there is on visual here; each year touts more than 75 performances of music (Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival has been held here), dance, films, theater and more.   Another surefire bet for the performing arts is Shakespeare & Company in nearby Lenox. The thriving regional theater company mixes traditional Shakespearean productions with contemporary works across multiple, indoor and outdoor stages. And do we need to mention that weed is legal here? Try paying a visit to the closest cannabis dispensary to the New York state border: the chic and friendly Rebelle located in Great Barrington.

Stay here: Oriented toward health, wellness and pampering, Canyon Ranch , which is centered around the century-old, lovingly restored Bellefontaine Mansion, has a lot to offer: tennis, aerobics, guided hikes and bike rides, canoeing, croquet and more than 40 seminars and classes daily such as “Finding Forgiveness.” After all that fresh air and, er, learning, relax in the spa while enjoying the signature Canyon Stone Massage or the candlelit Euphoria body treatment.

Cape May, NJ

11.  Cape May, NJ

Rediscover your inner summertime kiddie at this seaside destination, which has some of the East Coast’s most unspoiled beaches. The unpretentious fun peaks on Fourth of July weekend—when a full-on carnival and an impressive fireworks display bring in throngs of people—but the good times continue throughout the season, with boardwalk vendors and even dolphin-spotting tours.

Do this: Yup, Jersey Shore Alpacas sounds like an MTV spin-off (and it’d be an awesome one). At this small alpaca farm in Green Creek, a quaint town right next to Cape May, mingle with the critters—well taken care of by owners Jim and Tish Carpinelli—during Open Farm Saturdays, when you can meet the cute creatures at the fence and feed them (carrots are provided).

Stay here: Cape Resorts . One of the area’s Victorian buildings, the 200-year-old Congress Hall is America’s oldest oceanfront resort. It has 104 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa and a fitness center. But despite the full-service amenity list, the best things here are the simple ones, like the smell of salty sea air outside your open window. (Book an Atlantic-view room for the best relaxation results.)

Philadelphia, PA

12.  Philadelphia, PA

2hrs from NYC by car, 1hr and 23min by train

Aside from the wild football fans and patriotic Liberty Bell-seekers, the city of brotherly love caters to the artistic set through major attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Go to get cultured, but stick around for the amazing restaurants, beer gardens and the cheesesteaks ( duh ) that truly make the city a smash.

Do this: As the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the  Philadelphia Museum of Art should arguably be the first stop on your list. (Yes, even before the aforementioned cheesesteak). Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of 19th-and early-20th-century paintings and artifacts. After peeping the creative works, refuel at Reading Terminal Market . The famous indoor farmer’s market hawks everything from food and housewares to speciality snacks and treats all under one roof. Grab a takeaway treat from notable sellers like Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, Beiler’s Doughnuts and Little Thai Market. Once you’re full, head to Independence Beer Garden (an outdoor brew den) to down a few pints while playing games like giant jenga. What’s missing? Oh, right: End your night with a cheesesteak at any one of these spots.

Stay here:  Rest your head at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco . This is one of the city’s coolest hotels with post-modern meets art-deco inspired decor and a trendy rooftop bar. Added bonus: The hotel is located right next to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

The Hamptons, L.I.

13.  The Hamptons, L.I.

2.5 hrs from NYC

The Hamptons’ gorgeous sandy respites, dunes and relatively untouched landscapes aren’t just for the jet set. The area boasts gratis culture (the Dan Flavin Art Institute ) and no-nonsense places to eat ( Lobster Roll ) and drink (Fellingham’s), plus plenty of other casual nooks for the rest of us.

Do this: Coopers Beach  is the only stretch of silky, fine-grained white sand in Southampton that’s open to the public. So you can look like a baller in your sunset Instagram pic—without having to actually throw down a ton of dough.

Otherwise, you pay to park at Main Beach in East Hampton or park and walk to Montauk’s Kirk Park Beach.

Don’t miss a trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for some gorgeous views or a shopping spree in Sag Harbor.

Stay here: Privacy, luxury and amenities reign supreme at the Reform Club . The main building houses seven suites with wood-burning fireplaces (you’ll want to turn them on, even in the summer, just for the fun of it), oversize marble baths and white wainscot walls with original artwork.

Cooperstown, NY

14.  Cooperstown, NY

4hrs from NYC

Cooperstown has way more than baseball, and every true brew head knows this. With four breweries in town, Cooperstown was once the country's hops-growing capital.

Do this: Brewery Ommegang , is located on a 135-acre hops farm and offers daily tours.

Stay here: The Otesaga , the charming (and reportedly haunted) historic hotel, is celebrating its 106th anniversary. It offers fishing and boating—and serves Ommegang beer, to boot.

Newport, RI

15.  Newport, RI

4hrs 30mins from NYC

It’d be easy to dismiss the town as a tourist trap, but what often brings people back to Newport (other than yacht races, tours of a Vanderbilt mansion and smiley locals) are the newish spots.

Eat here: Revolving Door , where regional and national chefs hunker down for several weeks—sometimes up to a month—creating, cooking and serving an inspired prix-fixe menu.

Stay here: The Attwater , a design-driven seven-room boutique hotel off of historic Bellevue Avenue, recently acquired a Victorian manor next door and renovated it from top to bottom.

Bannerman's Castle on island in Hudson River in Fishkill, New York

Located in New York's Hudson Valley, around 60 miles north of Manhattan, Beacon has transformed in the past two decades from a sleepy industrial town to a thriving arts community, making it the getaway of choice for relaxation-seeking city dwellers. Here, visitors can spend weekends (or a daytrip) perusing vintage shops and flea markets, kayaking along the Hudson River, and exploring Beacon's scenic hiking trails.

The first stop on your itinerary should be Dia Beacon, a renowned contemporary art museum housed in a former Nabisco box-printing factory. One of the largest contemporary art galleries in the country, Dia's robust collection of work spans from the 1960s to the present. From here, take a stroll down Main Street. Lined with doughnut shops, cafes and art galleries, Beacon's main drag features hidden gems such as Hudson Beach Glass and the Towne Crier Cafe, a popular restaurant and live music venue. While there is plenty to do and see in Beacon, you can't leave without touring the ruins of Bannerman Castle. Situated on Pollepel Island and reachable by boat from late April to October, this Scottish-style castle was once a storage site for surplus military equipment and ammunition.

Not only is this quiet refuge less than two hours by car from Manhattan, but travelers can easily hop on the train to reach this destination as well: Take the Metro-North Railroad from New York City to Beacon for less than $50 round trip. There are also plenty of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from cozy bed-and-breakfasts to unique digs like The Roundhouse, an abandoned factory complex-turned-stylish boutique hotel.

Philadelphia buildings around Philadelphia City Hall

Ditch the Big Apple and head about 95 miles southwest to the City of Brotherly Love. Known best for being the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia is an ideal weekend getaway for families and history buffs. Brush up on your founding fathers trivia on a walking tour of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center before strolling through Rittenhouse Square Park. From there, set your sights on the city's must-see museums: The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation and The Franklin Institute are all good places to explore.

Philadelphia is also notorious for its substantial culinary prowess . Sure, the cheesesteaks are a must-try – stop in a shop like Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies to see for yourself what all the hype is about – but this city has a diverse food scene. If you have time to spare, check out the lengthy list of vendors in Reading Terminal Market, where you can sample everything from Dutch to Thai to Cajun fare.

With limited parking available in the city, it's best to stick with public transportation. New York City travelers can ride the Amtrak from Moynihan Train Hall to the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in less than two hours. Once here, opt for lodging in Center City, where you'll find an array of coffee shops, posh restaurants and historic sites within walking distance of your hotel . Travelers particularly favor The Rittenhouse for its elegant accommodations and first-rate service.

Seascape with Orient Point Lighthouse in Long Island, New York

Long Island's northeastern peninsula, known as the North Fork, fits the bill for your next weekend trip if you like tranquil seaside villages and laid-back itineraries. Located about 80 miles east of Manhattan and directly north of the illustrious Hamptons, this quiet refuge is characterized by its wineries, beaches and friendly atmosphere. Not only is this short jaunt from the city an excellent place for a couples trips in New York state , but families will also find a plethora of exciting activities here as well.

To get here, catch the Long Island Rail Road commuter train from Penn Station to Greenport. When you arrive, make a beeline for the beach – Orient Beach State Park occupies a prime section of real estate along Gardiner's Bay and is a perfect place for kayaking, swimming and sunbathing. Meanwhile, wine aficionados can spend the afternoon at Macari Vineyards or Sparkling Pointe Vineyards and Winery while families hit up the Splish Splash water park. At the end of the day, unwind at the lovely Harborfront Inn at Greenport.

Fire Island Lighthouse at sunset

This secluded barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island is about 65 miles east of Manhattan and a popular getaway for New Yorkers – for good reason. Travelers will find an unspoiled island free of high-rise buildings and the vexing sounds of traffic, all within a few hours of the city. In fact, Fire Island is a car-free environment, making it the ideal choice for city dwellers in need of a short weekend escape. Here, visitors can enjoy activities like sailing, biking, clamming and bird-watching. Just keep in mind that Memorial Day to Labor Day is considered the busy season, so schedule your vacation outside of these dates if you want to avoid crowds.

Because you can't drive onto the island, the best way to get here is by taking the Long Island Rail Road to Sayville, Patchogue or Bayshore. These destinations have marinas that offer ferry service to and from Fire Island for a fee. When it comes to lodging, Fire Island's options are mostly small inns and hotels, but they fill up quickly, so book in advance to ensure you'll have accommodations. If you'd rather rough it, campgrounds are available within the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, at Smith Point County Park and at Watch Hill. Keep in mind, backcountry camping permits and daily campsite fees (typically starting at $25 per day) may be required for select areas.

East Hampton beach and lifeguard chair

Arriving in the Hamptons, it's easy to see why this seaside destination on eastern Long Island's South Fork has established such a name for itself. White sand beaches, untouched nature preserves and plenty of bars serving up frozen cocktails are just a few of the alluring images that may come to mind when you imagine an escape to the Hamptons. Luckily for New Yorkers, this little slice of heaven sits less than 100 miles east of Manhattan, making it easily accessible for weekend getaways and daytrips .

Lay down your towel on East Hampton's Main Beach or Southampton's Coopers Beach, then cast a fishing line from the shore of Montauk Point State Park. For a dose of culture, check out the Hamptons' illustrious art scene: The Parrish Art Museum and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center (open seasonally) are two of the area's most prominent museums. When it's time to turn in for the night, save some coin by choosing a hotel in nearby Riverhead or by camping on the beach.

Kaaterskill Waterfall in upstate New York

For nature lovers, this mountain range in southeastern New York is the perfect place to reconnect with the great outdoors. Home of the famous 1969 Woodstock music festival, the Catskills have been inspiring travelers for decades. Spend the weekend hiking the region's popular trails (the Kaaterskill Falls trail features the tallest waterfall in New York state), or get out on Alder Lake in a kayak. In winter, head here to see Hunter Mountain blanketed in snow and to take advantage of top-notch skiing and tubing opportunities.

In addition to outdoor activities such as hiking, fly-fishing, biking and zip lining, the Catskills are a haven for artists. Follow the Hudson River School Art Trail to witness firsthand the vistas that inspired artists like Thomas Cole. Meanwhile, music lovers and history buffs won't want to miss a visit to The Museum at Bethel Woods, a museum showcasing artifacts and stories from Woodstock. Before calling it a night at one of the region's fabulous hotels or resorts , stop by a microbrewery for a flight.

Lighthouse at Cape May, New Jersey

Those looking for a relaxing weekend should consider Cape May, a top romantic getaway destination in New Jersey . Located roughly 160 miles south of New York City, this enchanting East Coast town is beloved for its beautiful beaches, striking Victorian homes and laid-back atmosphere. After soaking up some rays at the beach (the Cove Beach is a traveler favorite), hit up the retailers at Washington Street Mall. Filled with small boutiques, ice cream shops and bookstores, this outdoor mall spans three blocks and is perfect for easygoing strolls.

Other can't-miss activities in Cape May include climbing the Cape May Lighthouse, watching the sun go down at Sunset Beach, embarking on a sightseeing cruise and taking a guided tour of the Emlen Physick Estate – Cape May's only Victorian-era house museum. Cape May offers a plethora of lodging options for weekend trips ranging from quaint B&Bs to hotels set in ornate Victorian mansions. Book a room in historic Congress Hall or The Southern Mansion for charming guest rooms and convenient amenities.

Boats in Mystic, Connecticut

The quintessential New England town of Mystic is situated around 130 miles northeast of New York City and considered one of the top things to do in Connecticut . This seaside village has everything you'd want from a weekend getaway: museums, galleries, delicious eateries and historic landmarks. Head to Williams Beach Park for a quiet day by the water, then stroll through Mystic's historic downtown. Colonial-era sea captain's homes line the streets here, and there are countless places to dine and shop.

Families will also love the Mystic Aquarium for its educational exhibits and interactive habitats. Meanwhile, the Mystic Seaport Museum is a maritime museum that offers several activities for kids, including hands-on exhibits and a zoo garden. Just don't leave without snapping a photo of the iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge, a 1922 drawbridge that connects the Groton and Stonington sides of Mystic. When you're ready to retire for the evening, Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa receives rave reviews for its comfortable rooms and ample business amenities.

Autumn foliage in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts

This rural region in western Massachusetts (about 150 miles north of Manhattan) has all the makings of a fairytale getaway with plenty of things to do . Picturesque mountain ranges, winding roads and idyllic towns are synonymous with the Berkshires, making this destination the perfect place to escape the hubbub of New York City. Bring your partner along to enjoy a romantic weekend filled with antique shopping, museum tours and scenic car rides through the region's lush countryside.

For breathtaking mountain panoramas, strap on your hiking boots and head to the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, culture hounds won't want to miss a chance to tour the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and The Clark Art Institute. In summer, catch a dance performance at the prestigious Jacob's Pillow or listen to live music on the lawn of Tanglewood, an extravagant music venue and summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Accommodations in the Berkshires run the gamut from B&Bs to luxurious hotels and resorts. Many past travelers say Canyon Ranch Lenox , while pricey, is worth the splurge for its wellness-focused amenities and indulgent spa treatments.

Sign at Shelter Island, New York

Only accessible by ferry, this hidden oasis between New York's North Fork and South Fork is perfect for a quick weekend escape from the city. You won't find rowdy nightlife or luxurious accommodations here, but that only adds to its appeal. In fact, nearly a third of the island is made up of the Mashomack Preserve, a protected habitat with 11 miles of coastline and more than 2,350 acres of tidal creeks, freshwater marshes, fields and woodlands. The preserve is also a major hub for bird-watching: More than 200 species of birds call this area home, although it is specifically known for its large population of nesting osprey.

Elsewhere on the island, visitors can lounge on Wades Beach, a family-friendly stretch of sand featuring lifeguards and a comfort station, or enjoy water sports at Shell Beach. Shelter Island is a premier spot for kayaking: The seasonally open Kayak Shelter Island offers single and double kayaks, along with paddleboard rentals. While the island has golf courses, boutique shopping and courts for petanque (a French game similar to bocce ball), undoubtedly the best thing to do here is nothing at all.

To get here, start by taking the Long Island Rail Road commuter train to Greenport, then board the North Ferry to Shelter Island. Alternatively, you can get here by driving to Sag Harbor and then loading your car onto the South Ferry. For lodging, Shelter Island offers a handful of small hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs.

Lake George in New York during sunset on a cool spring day

Situated in New York's Adirondacks region, roughly 200 miles north of Manhattan, Lake George is filled with fun activities the whole family can enjoy. If you're simply looking to kick your feet up on your weekend getaway, rent a pontoon boat and spend the day floating around Lake George. After an eventful day of lake activities, head back to your plush accommodations at The Sagamore Resort to unwind.

Five hours or less

Saranac Lake in New York

This quiet village in upstate New York (around 300 miles north of New York City) is less crowded than the popular Lake Placid, making Saranac Lake an excellent choice for a weekend getaway from the city. Take advantage of this stunning lake by getting out on the water in a canoe or kayak, then get your heart pumping on the 3.7-mile Bloomingdale Bog Trail. For an extra dose of history, the Saranac Laboratory Museum showcases Saranac's interesting past as a tuberculosis treatment destination. Downtown, you'll also find a variety of shops, restaurants and art galleries to keep you occupied for hours, plus little ones will enjoy the Adirondack Carousel, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Saranac Lake is also a popular winter destination thanks to its plethora of outdoor sports (think: snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing) and traditional winter activities such as the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which takes place every February. The event also features a fireworks display and multiple parades. When it comes to lodging, visitors will mostly find cozy cabins and B&Bs here, but a handful of luxury hotels are available as well. For the ultimate in comfort, book your stay at Hotel Saranac, a historic property with modern amenities.

Pink skies over the Tidal Basin and Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., while the yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom

Famous for its slew of historic landmarks, monuments and museums (many of which are free to enter), Washington, D.C., has long appealed to historians and politicos. However, there's more to the nation's capital than meets the eye. With more than 20 neighborhoods to explore and innumerable things to do , Washington is a treasure chest waiting to be unlocked. Find killer nightlife and impeccable dining in the Shaw and U Street area, upscale shopping in Georgetown, charming 19th-century row houses in Dupont Circle, and a bevy of historic attractions on Capitol Hill.

If you're only visiting for the weekend, expect an action-packed schedule. Start by hitting up one of the city's first-rate museums: The National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Gallery of Art are a few traveler favorites. Then, take a stroll along the Tidal Basin (you can also get out on the water by renting a paddleboat) or relax on the lawn of the National Mall. Here, you'll have easy access to attractions like the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and its Reflecting Pool, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol. Note, though, that while many of D.C.'s attractions are free, some museums may require timed-entry passes to be reserved ahead of time, so plan as far in advance as possible.

Located roughly 225 miles southwest of NYC, Washington is an easy drive by car or bus. However, the best way to get here is by train. Take Amtrak's high-speed Acela or Northeast Regional train to Union Station and shed up to 90 minutes off your travel time. Plus, because Washington frequently plays host to celebrities, politicians and business tycoons, there are plenty of top-notch accommodations to choose from once you arrive. For a luxurious stay, book a room at The Jefferson , a sophisticated property with European flair plus a restaurant and a cocktail bar on-site. An added bonus? The Jefferson is located only a mile away from the National Mall, so you'll be right where the action is.

Boston buildings in the evening

Bordering Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, New England's largest city sits 215 miles northeast of New York City; travelers can opt to travel here by car, bus or train. Whether you're drawn here by the cobblestone streets, the historic landmarks or the city's strong baseball roots (a visit to Fenway Park for a game or behind-the-scenes tour can't be missed), Boston has all the ingredients you need for a memorable weekend getaway – just remember to pack your walking shoes .

After you've successfully trekked the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail (or hop-on, hop-off bus tour) to some of Boston's most famed attractions – including the Paul Revere House, Old North Church and Faneuil Hall Marketplace – find a shady spot to rest in Boston Common or the Boston Public Garden. For a dose of culture, check out the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which features landscaped gardens and an extensive collection of European, Asian and American art. When you've tired yourself out from a day of sightseeing, hang up your coat in one of Boston's premier hotels . Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street, Boston and the Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf are two of the city's top properties, both offering a lengthy list of amenities and plush accommodations.

Sunset over Canadice Lake in New York

New York's Finger Lakes – a collection of 11 lakes that includes the popular shorelines of Seneca Lake, Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake – are revered for their spectacular water sports opportunities, scenic state parks and top-notch wine. As one of the chief wine regions in the country and the largest wine-producing area in the state of New York, the Finger Lakes region has earned its reputation as a top destination for romantic weekend getaways.

For short stays in the Finger Lakes, following the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the best way to see a lot of local wineries in a little amount of time. With nearly 30 wineries and several restaurants set along the route, the trail is perfect for leisurely car rides in the countryside (just be sure to assign a designated driver ahead of time). Opt for a refreshing riesling, the region's signature wine, or expand your palate on a tasting tour.

Meanwhile, nature lovers should head to Robert H. Treman State Park or Watkins Glen State Park for a chance to see breathtaking waterfalls. If you're looking for a small-town atmosphere with local shops and museums, you can't go wrong with Skaneateles Lake. Here, you'll also find a variety of charming B&Bs and inns like the Mirbeau Inn & Spa , a traveler favorite. Other top lodging options in the Finger Lakes region include the Inns of Aurora and The Statler Hotel at Cornell University , both of which offer easy access to Cayuga Lake.

A quick flight

Niagara Falls in daylight

If you're willing to hop on a short flight (or take a bus tour), you can enjoy a weekend marveling at one of the most beautiful and impressive natural wonders of the world: Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is less than a two-hour flight from New York City – and, while this powerful waterfall is sure to take your breath away, it isn't the only reason to plan a weekend getaway to the area. With beautiful botanical gardens, wineries and casinos, this famous tourist town has everything you need for a fun-filled weekend away. Take advantage of both the American and Canadian sides of the Niagara River by bringing your passport with you.

For a classic Niagara Falls experience, don a poncho and board the Maid of the Mist boat tour. This famed attraction is one of the best ways to see the falls up close, but it's impossible to guarantee you won't get wet. If you'd rather view the falls from a drier and less crowded vantage point, head to the observation deck of the Skylon Tower. Thrill-seekers can also experience the falls on Journey Behind the Falls, which takes participants directly behind the thunderous waterfall, or on an exhilarating jet boat tour. When it's time to turn in, visitors on the American side of the falls can book their stay at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , while Ontario-based guests spend a cozy night in the well-appointed Harbour House Hotel .

New York to Rhode Island – a Weekend Roadtrip

Rhode Island Connecticut travel guide road trip an trieu style and senses city guide nyc blogger

Have you ever been to Connecticut and Rhode Island? If not, then consider this a sign to go for a drive!

From New York, it’s about 3 hours. If you’re not starting your trip from New York like us, Boston is a big city that has lots of flight options. From Boston, Providence, Rhode Island, is only an hour away. Regardless, I suggest taking the coastal route and making many stops along the way. There are a lot of hidden treasures with charming little towns, friendly people, and delicious food.

In this post, I’m going to share with you the details of my recent road trip from Brooklyn, New York, through Connecticut, and Rhode Island (Providence and Newport).

NEW YORK – CONNECTICUT & RHODE ISLAND

Connecticut  (3rd smallest US state) is often overshadowed by New York, and I’ve heard it’s like the suburban of New York in a way. There’s Yale University, Mark Twain House, ESPN, apizza ( New Haven -style pizza), and historic lighthouses, definitely worth a detour if it’s within your route.

Rhode Island is the smallest state by size/area.  It borders Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the east and north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Providence is its capital, and it’s where Brown University is. Newport is known for sailing and historic Gilded Age mansions, so make Rhode Island your next day or short weekend road trip.

  • Grace Farms – New Canaan, CT
  • New Haven, CT
  • Hammonasset Beach State Park – Madison, CT
  • New London, CT
  • Westerly, CT
  • Hazard Rock – Narragansett, CT
  • Warwick, RI
  • Providence, RI
  • Newport, RI

CONNECTICUT

1. grace farms – new canaan, ct.

Grace Farms  has been on my list to visit for a while, and it’s not too off of my way out of New York to Rhode Island. After the visit, I learn that the place has so much to offer besides having a cool building situated on a beautiful landscape. N ature, arts, justice, community, and faith are some of their core initiatives, and that really shows through. I really enjoy my time there and cannot wait to come back.

You’d need to present your ID when entering the gate and be given a wristband to wear. Make sure to check in at the welcome center, and after that, you’re free to explore the property. You won’t miss the iconic circular building, called the River Building . It’s designed by SANAA , a Tokyo-based architectural firm. There’s a  cafe, a library, an auditorium, and playgrounds for kids and family time.

The staff members that we encountered were super friendly, welcoming, and informative. We had some tea time served by Frank, one of Grace Farms Foundation’s staff members.  We spent a little over 2 hours, just walk-in with no reservation.

2. New Haven, CT

We’ve been to New Haven a few times, and each time, it’s just a quick stop-and-go for food and coffee. you’d notice there are a lot of college students and families since it’s where Yale University is. Below are some of the iconic must-stops in New Haven!

Louis’ Lunch – hamburger sandwich . This is a pretty cool spot with claims of having invented the hamburger, one of the oldest family-run businesses in the US. It’s pretty interesting watching the way they prepare each component in an old-school way. Must-try!

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana – the best white clam pizza! I love the clam ratio with the perfect amount of sauciness and texture. So flavorful! The bottom crust is hard and the edge is more burnt, not as chewy. The original tomato pie is just alright. Go here for the clam pizza!

Modern Apizza – second-best  white clam pizza. I love the super thin crust, and the fact that it’s cheesier than Frank Pepe’s white clam pizza. We did the half classic white clam and half clam casino (with bell pepper and bacon) and loved the classic much more.

Yale University – private Ivy League school founded in 1701, known for liberal arts, drama, and music programs.

3. hammonasset beach state park – madison, ct.

About 30 minutes east of New Haven,  Hammonasset Beach State Park makes a great stop for your family. There are long sandy beaches with picnic areas, hiking trails, campgrounds, and so much more.

Note that you’d need to pay an entrance fee before entering any state or national parks. But if you’re around the area past their business hour like us, you can just drive in and check it out.

4. New London, CT

We did a quick detour to shoot one outfit and came across Ocean Beach Park in New London, and i thought it was pretty interesting. It looks like an abandoned amusement park, and the gloomy windy weather definitely adds to its eerie feeling. I made a fun  Tiktok video here .

5. Westerly, RH

We stopped by a Thai restaurant, called Thong Thai Restaurant , on the way back home, and I thought everything was just okay. Food was on the sweeter side, nothing special, but it looks like it’s family-owned and the Thai lady owner was super nice to us. It’s in a small town located on the southwestern shoreline of Rhode Island, Westerly, and their clients seem to be mostly white with take-out orders.

6. Hazard Rock – Narragansett, CT

Fun little detour in  Narragansett, Rhode Island where people are fishing. There were some seafood restaurants that had lines of people outside, and I wish we had time to stop by.

RHODE ISLAND

7. warwick, ri.

We arrived in Warwick, the third largest city in Rhode Island, at around 8 pm for dinner. We dined at Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar  (check out their buck-a-shuck happy hour) and stayed the night at the Radisson Hotel . Providence is only 15 – 20 minutes away from Warwick, so we leave to Providence first thing in the morning. Everything is so close, and I love that about road tripping in New England.

8. Providence, RI

Providence is the capital city of Rhode Island. I was there on a Sunday, so there wasn’t much going on besides some crowd for the 5K marathon. After that, there was barely anyone on the streets, so we just spent the morning walking around checking out some historic buildings, got some coffee and bakery, and left for Newport.

SOME FOOD RECS:

Signature food that you have to try when in Rhode Island is seafood, of course, and clams. Lots of clams! Dishes that you must order include  Clam Casino (stuffed clams), Steamers, Stuffies,   Clam Cakes , and Clam Bakes . Rhode Island-Style Calamari is a must-order. I love clams and soups, so I always have to order my Clam Chowder everywhere I go. Each restaurant does it differently. Food Network has a slideshow with pics, so check it out here .

Los Andes (Peruvian) – it’s a very popular spot since it’s a huge restaurant, so can accommodate large groups and walk in, huge portions. I’ve been and do think food is just ok, but it’s not a bad spot to go once for sure. 7.5/10

Aguardente (tapas bar) – We sat by the bar and ordered lamb chop, seafood paella, fries, and sangria (they used lots of fruits!). 7.5/10

Ellie’s  (bakery, brunch, & cake) – Decent spot for breakfast and people watching, ok coffee though.

On my list: Al Forno Restaurant (grilled pizza), Gracie’s, Nicks On Broadway, Persimmon, Oberlin, Seven Stars Bakery, and East Side Pockets

9. newport, ri.

Our experience at Newport was really interesting, and I loved it so much more than Providence. Not that the city was boring or anything, it’s just because there were a lot more things going on in Newport on that particular Sunday. There’s Newport International Boat Show (September 15 -18, 2022), many Newport mansions to visit, ocean drive, and plenty of opportunities to be near the ocean.

In case you don’t know, Newport mansions were summer ‘cottages’ for America’s wealthiest families, built during the Gilded Age.   I was debating between the Breakers versus Marble House and ended up at the Breakers since it’s bigger and got more varieties of things to see. I’d give the Breakers tour a 6/10 – Tiktok video here . A staff member’s favorite is Marble House, so that’s definitely on my list to visit for next time.

4 HOURS IN NEWPORT – TIKTOK VIDEO

The Breakers – Ticket is $29/person! It is the grandest of Newport’s summer ‘cottages’. I like the little kid’s room, the kitchen, and the view out to the ocean. Before you exit the building to the garden, there’s a gift shop, and I bought a tiny copper pot and pan ornament as souvenirs from the gift shop.

Marble House – For $38, just $9 more, you can visit 2 mansions. We only had an hour before they were closed for the day (5 pm), so, unfortunately, we missed it this time. We were told, however, to keep the receipt as we might be able to get the deal the next time we go. I’m really curious to see the gold leaf room and the giant staircase. Anyway, both the Breakers and Marble House were designed by the same architect, named Hunt, so there might be some similarities. Check out the Elms, designed by Horace Trumbauer.

Ocean Drive – It’s free, and there’s no real physical starting point. You can start from downtown Newport, just look for the sign that says Ocean Path or drive along the mansion-lined  Bellevue Avenue.

The Breakers – a visit to one of the iconic Newport mansions is a must!

Lastly, for any city traveling, keep in mind that Sunday isn’t the best time to visit most downtowns as many businesses are closed. So far, I see that the tourists or crowds in Rhode Island consist of mostly older people. The food was great, but there weren’t a lot of people our age out anywhere else we went. I liked the small New England town feel, and it’s very peaceful and relaxing.

Why take a family road trip to Rhode Island?

For me, summertime on the east coast means lobster rolls, fresh squeezed lemonade, hydrangea flowers in full bloom, and weekend escapes to the beach.  While many Manhattan-ites flock to Montauk or the Hamptons, I suggest avoiding the crowded LIE.  Instead, head to Rhode Island for your summer road trip!

It’s 3.5 hours from the city, which means it’s long enough for nap time, but won’t drag on for ages.  While I-95 may not be the most scenic drive in the world, there are countless charming towns to stop and check out along the way.  Greenwich, Westport, Mystic, and Watch Hill to name a few.  You can easily complete the whole drive to Newport in one-go, or spend time exploring a few of these towns while en route.  I suggest the latter: spend a few hours in Mystic, a few days in Watch Hill at the Ocean House , and just when they kids start saying, “are we there yet, “ you’ll pull into Newport’s happy harbor.  It’s the perfect summer family road trip that culminates in a destination filled with crispy white sailboats, pristine beaches, and plenty of family friendly activities.

Best Family Friendly stops along the way to Newport:

Stop 1: where to stay, eat, and play in mystic, ct.

  • Check this out: The seaport town of Mystic, CT is a perfect quick “stretch your legs” stop. Stroll the downtown Main Street, and reserve tickets to take the kids to the Mystic Aquarium .
  • Eat: Bravo Bravo is an Italian eatery that features fresh takes on classic recipes.
  • Stay: If you decide to stay the night, the Whaler’s Inn is a popular historic inn right on Main Street.

girl looking at a while mystic aquarium

Stop 2: Where to stay, eat and play in the Westerly/Watch Hill area

  • Stay Option 1: The Ocean House is a luxury resort that has a beautiful kid friendly beach, and wide open grassy lawns.  Order lobster rolls on your beach chair, splash in the waves, play a round of croquet, and have a family shuffleboard tournament.  Spend a few days relaxing at the hotel and exploring the area
  • Stay Option 2: Watch Hill Inn – a sister hotel to The Ocean House, the inn features larger luxury suites ideal for families looking for more space.  It’s a 5-10 minute walk to the Ocean House beach, but it’s conveniently located just seconds from downtown Watch Hill.
  • Stay Option 3: Weekapaug Inn – Weekpaug is also a sister hotel to the above 2 properties, but has access to a separate beach, private pool, and the added bonus of boat rides around Quonochontaug Pond.

the ocean house sideview

  • Check this out:  The charming area of Westerly includes the quaint town called Watch Hill.  You can easily spend 20 minutes on Main Street and you will have seen it all, or you can get lost in each store and hours will pass.  Watch Hill is “little town famous” for its oldest continuously operating merry-go-round in the country, ice cream at St. Clair Annex , and stunning summertime sunsets.
  • On your way out of town the next day, take a quick detour to Manifredi Farms .  The little kids will love feeding the ducks and donkeys.  They also sell their own organic produce, jams, and homemade pies.

  • Eat: Sea Room –  I can still taste the homemade red pepper pasta with summer veggies!  Located, in the Weekapaug Inn , this restaurant easily caters to families, but also delivers fresh five-star food.

Your final destination: Where to stay, eat and play in Newport

  • Check this out: Once you arrive in Newport, take a few days to explore this charming oceanside town filled with sailboats, famous Gilded Age mansions, boutique shops lining brick sidewalks, and plenty of stunning beaches.  Easton Beach and Sachuest Beach are quite popular, but Peabody beach is perfect for the little kids seeking little waves.  Don’t miss walking along the famous Cliff Walk , featuring “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and Roosevelt’s, nestled on top of the coastal bluffs.

downtown Newport Rhode Island - summer road trip series

  • Eat: The Mooring – Your first food experience should be at The Mooring.  The Moording has, hands down, the best clam chowder I’ve had!  I licked the bowl and ordered a second one.  The dockside restaurant also features lobster rolls, fish and chips, and just about anything you think of when envisioning a New England summer nights.  Other popular Newport restaurants include: Clarke Cooke House , The Black Pearl , and Flo’s Clam Shack .
  • Stay: There are plenty of luxury resorts in Newport. The Auberge Vanderbilt is located in downtown Newport, has its own private pool, outdoor garden patio, and rooftop deck overlooking the town. Another option is Gurney’s Newport , which has beautiful 360 degree views of the marina, plenty of restaurants on site, private pool, and even welcomes pets. Lastly, Castle Hill Inn is famous for its beautiful water views, luxurious accommodations, and wide open lawn where you’ll want to curl up in an Adirondack chair all day.  I’ll be headed to Newport this summer and will report back with an updated review of the accomodations!

Step Back in Time

Must-see: the breakers, must-see: marble house, must-see: the elms, must-see: rough point.

Sprawling Rough Point is famous for being the summer home of billionaire tobacco heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke, whose extreme wealth and unconventional lifestyle drew media attention her entire life. The 115-room residence has remained the same since her death, filled with an impressive art collection and surrounded by formal gardens. Unlike the other estates along Bellevue Avenue, Rough Point was modeled after an English manor; it was also the site of Duke’s debutante ball. Chateau-sur-Mer was the first on the Newport society scene and the site of many a grand party. Its Victorian decor is markedly toned down compared to later arrivals, but rest assured its dark wood paneling and hand-painted murals are by no means boring.

Must-Do: Newport Cliff Walk

Best shopping, where to eat.

Dozens of good options exist: Corner Café is a popular spot for breakfast and brunch among locals and tourists alike; just be prepared for a wait. The Clarke Cooke House is located in a historic Colonial home, and is considered a must stop for notables passing through. Work off dinner by dancing at the downstairs Boom Boom Room. The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar has been a Newport mainstay for 25 years. This upscale waterfront eatery is where to splurge on Maine lobster, or oysters washed down with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Smoke House is only open during peak tourist season from May to October, but its offerings—from baby back ribs to corn and crab chowder—are the best of both the barbeque and New England worlds.

Where to Stay

The only thing harder than deciding where to eat is deciding where to stay. Channel the Gilded Age at Castle Hill Inn , a Relais & Chateaux property. Its lodging options range from a luxurious room in a 19th-century Victorian mansion to cottages and houses on a private beach, to a separate property overlooking the harbor. On-site dining and spa services complete the relaxation trifecta. Boutique hotel Gilded is a quirky take on the era and a must for lovers of architecture and design, from furniture in bold colors and shapes to wallpaper and accents that beg for your attention. Breakfast is included and might involve homemade baked goods such as cheddar-scallion scones or small plates with melon balls and cucumbers. The Vanderbilt Grace boutique hotel resides in a historic mansion, and yes, it was built by a Vanderbilt. It's near the attractions on Thames, and counts two restaurants, two pools and a spa. The suite-only Mill Street Inn is ideal for families and located in a 19th-century mill that’s been designated a National Historic Landmark. Or stay right on Thames in The Francis Malbone House , the former residence of shipping magnate Colonel Francis Malbone. The decor channels an earlier era and provides the proper setting for an afternoon tea of homemade macaroons, cookies and more.

Best Day Trips From Providence, RI

In this list, you’ll find some incredible New England towns to explore that are only a short drive from Providence. I’m also including a variety of options including countryside getaways, charming coastal towns and exciting city destinations.

Each destination includes how long it will take you to get there from Providence, the best things to do and suggestions on where to eat to help you pick which will be best for your plans. And with that, let’s jump into the best day trips from Providence, RI!

1. Mystic, CT

Distance From Providence: 1 hour

Mystic, CT is one of the easiest day trips from Providence, RI you can take.

Mystic is an incredibly charming town that sits along the Mystic River in Connecticut, and while it’s small, it has so much to do that can keep you busy for longer than a day. And with Mystic only being a short 1-hour drive, this is one of the easiest day trips from Providence, RI you can take.

Some of the highlights in Mystic to consider for your day trip itinerary include the Mystic Seaport Museum , walking along picturesque Main Street in downtown to visit the shops, grabbing a slice or two from Mystic Pizza and strolling through the neighboring town of Stonington.

I have an entire post dedicated to all the amazing things to do in Mystic, so be sure to click the link below to read all about my favorite shops, restaurants and sites to see in Mystic.

Click here to read my detailed travel guide on all the best things to do in Mystic, CT!

2. Newport, RI

Distance From Providence: 45 minutes – 1 hour (depending on traffic)

You can either drive, or take a ferry from Providence to Newport, maing it an easy day trip option either way.

Newport is also only a short drive away, making this another one of the easiest day trips from Providence, RI.

Newport is such a dreamy little coastal town that has lots of charm, and is a great place to spend the day in any season (yes, even winter!). Some of the highlights to definitely consider during your day trip would be the Newport mansions , Cliff Walk (my personal favorite thing to do), Bowen’s Wharf, walking the historic streets, taking a sailboat tour and visiting Goat Island Lighthouse.

To make the most of your time on a day trip, a great option to consider is a combined trolley and mansion tour, which provides awesome insight into the city while cruising around in a cute trolley (and not having to worry about parking!). This tour also includes admission to The Breakers, one of the best mansions to see.

Click here to book your Trolley & Mansion sightseeing tour in Newport!

I have an extensive guide on all the best things to do in Newport, RI, including a suggested day trip itinerary. Be sure to to click the link below to read all about my favorite shops, restaurants and things to do in Newport.

Click here to read my detailed guide on all the best things to do on a Newport, RI day trip!

3. Block Island, RI

Distance From Providence: 45 minutes – 1 hour to get to the ferry, 30 minutes – 1 hour on the ferry (depending on the type of ferry you take)

To feel like you've truly escaped the city, Block Island is the best option for a day trip from Providence.

Block Island is my favorite coastal getaway in Rhode Island, and while it’s a bit more logistically complicated to get there because you have to take a ferry, it’s more than worth it, and is one of the best day trips from Providence, RI.

My favorite thing about Block Island are the gorgeous beaches, and all of them are free to visit, including parking. For the perfect Block Island day trip, I definitely recommend carving out some time to visit at least one of the beaches.

Some other things to consider doing would be the Mohegan Bluffs, walking out to North Light, exploring the downtown, grabbing lunch at The Oar and seeing South East Light.

Is There A Direct Ferry From Providence To Block Island?

No, there is no ferry that goes directly from Providence to Block Island. You will have to drive to either the Point Judith Ferry in RI or the New London Ferry in CT.

I have a detailed guide on everything you need to know about a day trip to Block Island, including the best ferry options, my opinion on if you need a car, and the best shops, restaurants and beaches. Click the link below for more information on Block Island.

Click here to read my guide all about a day trip to Block Island!

4. New Haven, CT

Distance From Providence: 1 hour and 45 minutes

New Haven, CT has so much more to do than Yale University, including amazing food and awesome waterfront views.

New Haven is such a cool little city in Connecticut with some really fun things to do, making this one of the best day trips from Providence, RI. I love it because while it’s a city, it has a lot of character and doesn’t feel as overwhelming as some other larger cities.

Some things you should definitely consider doing in New Haven would be walking around the Yale campus, trying an “Apizza,” taking in the views from East Rock Park, seeing the historic homes on Hillhouse Avenue, spending some time at The Green and visiting Lighthouse Point Park.

For the best Apizza experience, I highly recommend you check out Sally’s . Apizza is a special kind of pizza that’s a combination of New Haven and Napoli style, and it’s really delicious. If you’re a fan of seafood, try their white clam Apizza.

5. Boston, MA

Distance From Providence: 1 hour without traffic, but can take up to 2 hours during rush hour traffic

Boston is packed with history and character, and offers a lot of opportunity to get out on the water with whale watches and sailing tours.

Boston is an awesome day trip option because of its iconic New England history, gorgeous architecture, incredible shops and restaurants and amazing museums. While you can, of course, spend a week in Boston and not run out of things to do, but it’s also one of the best day trips from Providence, RI you can take.

Some of the best things to do in Boston include walking around the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, exploring Boston Common and the Public Gardens (consider going on a Swan Boat Ride!), hitting up Newbury Street for some shopping, visiting the penguins and sea lions at the New England Aquarium , taking a waterfront stroll along the Charles Esplanade and walking the Freedom Trail.

To take some pressure off your feet during your day trip, a hop-on, hop-off tour is a great option to see as many sites as possible, without having to worry about public transportation or parking.

Boston has endless restaurants to check out, but some of my favorites are 75 Chestnut , Lolita Mexican (a bit of a scene, but a really cool experience), Neptune Oyster and Boston Burger Company . Don’t skip Mike’s to pick up some of their famous pastries!

6. Salem, MA

Distance From Providence: 1 hour and 15 minutes without traffic, up to 1 hour and 45 minutes in rush hour traffic

In the fall season, Salem makes for the perfect day trip from Providence, RI.

Everyone loves to visit Salem in October (myself included because it’s quite the experience!), but I always tell people that it makes for a great day trip or weekend getaway all year-round, especially in the summer. While Salem is known for its Halloween celebrations, there’s also a lot of incredible history here that’s fun to explore any time of the year.

Combine that with awesome restaurants, museums, gorgeous New England architecture and really great tour options, it makes for a really wonderful day trip from Providence, RI.

Some of the best things to do in Salem are the Peabody Essex Museum , Winter Island Park and lighthouse, exploring the historic neighborhoods, taking a sailing tour, the Salem Witch Trial Memorial and the House of Seven Gables .

Even if you visit outside of the fall season, it’s still fun to get into the spooky spirit while in Salem. The best way to do that year-round is by taking this awesome walking tour and select a nighttime tour option. The tour guide shares amazing stories of the town’s haunted past, and will be led by lantern light for the ultimate spooky experience.

7. Plymouth, MA

Distance From Providence: 1 hour without traffic, up to 1 hour and 30 minutes with traffic

Plymouth has a lot to offer for a day trip, including beautiful parks and lots of history.

Another one of the best day trips from Providence, RI is Plymouth, MA, which is a cute little town with a variety of things to do. While it’s known for its history, and is also packed with museums, you’ll also find some really beautiful parks to explore, great restaurants and shops, wineries and beaches.

One thing to consider doing in Plymouth if you’re looking for a day of restoration is to head to Mirbeau Inn & Spa . Mirbeau has a few locations throughout the Northeast, and their Plymouth location is a great destination for a day at the spa. You can also pop in for a lovely lunch or dinner.

Some other things to consider doing in Plymouth would be to watch history come to life at the Plimoth Patuxet Museum , visiting the National Monument to the Forefathers, stroll through Brewster Gardens, step aboard the Mayflower II, a replica of the original Mayflower ship, go wine tasting at Plymouth Bay Winery , take a walk on Plymouth Long Beach and explore the shops and restaurants on Main Street in downtown Plymouth.

To save a little money, booking a combination ticket to two historical attractions is a great idea. Be sure to click the link below to look into combination ticket options!

Click here to book your historical site combination tickets in Plymouth!

Some awesome places to eat in Plymouth would be 42 Degrees North , Cork + Table , Water Street Cafe and East Bay Grille . Be sure to also stop by Ziggy’s for some ice cream!

9. Scituate, MA

One of the best things to see in Scituate is the amazing lighthouse.

The South Shore in Massachusetts often gets overlooked by places like Cape Cod, Gloucester and Rockport (all of which are great destinations, don’t get me wrong!), but definitely look into the South Shore when thinking about day trips from Providence, RI because there are some really lovely towns down this way.

My favorite is Scituate, which is a small town, making it a great day trip destination. It’s usually not that crowded, even in the summer, and still has a lot to do for visitors.

Some of the best things to consider adding to your Scituate itinerary would be visiting Scituate Lighthouse, going on a whale watch with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary , beer tasting at Untold Brewing , visiting the shops and restaurants in Scituate’s town center, going for a walk on Humarock Beach and taking a sail boat tour around the harbor.

As far as what to eat, definitely pop into Mill Wharf for a lobster roll, and also be sure to visit Lucky Finn Cafe , which is equally beautiful as it is delicious. And of course, grab a cone at Nona’s Ice Cream !

10. Old Saybrook, CT

Distance From Providence: 1 hour and 15 minutes

For a quieter and more serene day trip from Providence, RI, Old Saybrook in Connecticut is a wonderful destination to consider.

When planning day trips from Providence, RI, a great destination to consider if you’re looking for a quaint coastal town is Old Saybrook in Connecticut. While it’s not super tiny, it has a small-town feel, and is a great place to connect with nature, and have a classic New England experience that likely won’t be packed with people.

Old Saybrook is deeply rooted in history, and also has a lot of connections to the movie industry, specifically with Katharine Hepburn having a long-time family home here.

Some of the highlights of things to do in Old Saybrook would be seeing Lynde Point Lighthouse, going for a sunset walk on Harvey’s Beach, visiting the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center , going for a ride on the Essex Steam Train, packing a picnic and hitting the trails at Rocky Neck State Park, exploring Gillette Castle and hitting up the shops and restaurants on Main Street in downtown Old Saybrook.

Old Saybrook is also an incredible town for foodies, as its packed with amazing restaurants. Some of the best places to eat include Liv’s Shack for a lobster roll, Rosemary & Sage and La Marea Ristorante . Be sure to stop by Fenwick for ice cream!

11. Hartford, CT

Distance From Providence: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Hartford, CT is one of the best day trips from Providence, RI.

For another city day trip from Providence, RI, definitely consider Hartford, CT! There are some awesome museums here, which makes this a great destination for a rainy day, but beyond that, there are lots of other things to do that will appeal to all different types of people.

Some of the best things to do in Hartford would be the Mark Twain House & Museum , the Connecticut Science Center , the Riverfront plaza and Riverfront park, hitting up the local breweries and distilleries (I suggest Hartford Flavor Company for an especially cool experience) and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center . If you’re traveling with kids, a fun stop to make is the Bushnell Park Carousel.

Hartford is another destination with a great food scene and tons of restaurants to pick from. Definitely consider Adriatic Restaurant , Max Downtown and Montecarlo Bakery & Cafe .

Weekend Trips From Providence, RI

Cape Cod might be tough to do as a day trip from Providence, but it will make for an amazing weekend getaway.

While Cape Cod is technically two hours or so from Providence and can definitely be done as a day trip, it makes for an even better weekend getaway. Cape Cod is one of my personal favorite destinations in all of New England, so I always encourage people to go even for a day if that’s all they squeeze in. But with so much to do, why not make it a weekend getaway?

Some of the best things to do on Cape Cod during a weekend trip would be to visit the Cape Cod National Seashore, explore Provincetown, hit up Main Street in Chatham and visit some of the local beaches (depending on where you stay).

Definitely don’t skip the fresh seafood! Some of the best restaurants on Cape Cod are Ocean House , Sesuit Harbor Cafe for a lobster roll, Skipper Chowder House and Mac’s Shack .

If you do only have a day, be sure to click the link below for my detailed guide on taking a Cape Cod day trip, as well as suggested itineraries. I also have a guide all about the perfect itinerary for 3 days on Cape Cod, also linked below to help you out.

New York City

Distance From Providence: 3 hours without traffic, up to 4 hours and 30 minutes in rush hour traffic

Taking in views of the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn is one of the best things to do during a weekend getaway to NYC.

Because New York City can be a 4-hour drive or longer because of traffic (and always add extra time for traffic!), this makes for a much better weekend getaway than a day trip.

Of course, NYC is iconic, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to planning a weekend getaway from Providence, RI. But to help you narrow it down, some of my favorite things to suggest for first-time visitors are to explore the sites in Central Park, ride the Staten Island ferry (for free!) to see the Statue of Liberty, grab a slice of pizza (or two!) from Joe’s on E. 14th Street, walk the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn to explore the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn for incredible skyline views, and walk around the Chelsea neighborhood.

A really unique option in NYC is to take a nighttime sailing tour to see some famous landmarks and the skyline lit up at night.

Click here to book your nighttime sailing tour in NYC!

The Berkshires

Distance From Providence: About 2 hours, depending on which town you stay in

The Berkshires in the fall season are especially beautiful, and this is a great destination for hiking as well.

The Berkshires are the ultimate woodsy experience, and make for a great weekend getaway from Providence, RI. Even though it’s a great place to get out into nature for hiking and such, it’s also comprised of over 30 towns, so you have plenty of options on where to stay, and will have lots of access to an incredible food scene and downtown areas.

Because The Berkshires encompasses so many towns, it’s hard to narrow down exactly what you should do during your visit because it will greatly depend on which town you stay in. What I can say is that you’ll have no shortage of hiking opportunities, as well as lots of parks and nature trails to explore while here.

If you’re curious about the best towns to stay in, I’m partial to Stockbridge, which is famous for its connections to Norman Rockwell. Stockbridge is a picturesque New England town with beautiful homes and great restaurants.

I also really like Lenox, which has a bit more to do, and has a slightly more upscale feel as well.

Woodstock, VT

Distance From Providence: 3 hours

Woodstock, VT is one of the best day trips from Providence, RI you can take when you want a countryside getaway.

Woodstock, VT is one of my all-time favorite Vermont destinations, and is one of the best weekend getaways from Providence, RI.

Woodstock is an idyllic little New England town that’s packed with charm, and is wonderful to visit in any season. In the winter, it turns into a cozy winter wonderland. In the fall, you’ll feel like you’re inside a Hallmark harvest festival. In the summer, there are lots of hiking and nature trails to tackle. In the spring, you may forget that you’re not in a charming town in the English countryside.

Depending on the season, some of the best things to do in Woodstock, VT are visiting the three covered bridges (Middle, Lincoln and Taftsville), exploring Billings Farm & Museum , hiking to the summit of Mount Tom, visiting the lovely shops and cafes in downtown Woodstock, exploring the Marsh – Billings – Rockefeller National Historical Park and taking a drive to nearby Quechee to visit the Simon Pearce flagship store for a glass-blowing demonstration.

The most amazing dining experience I’ve ever had has been right here in Woodstock. If you’re planning a weekend getaway, or even just a day trip, I highly recommend splurging on dinner at Lincoln Inn & Restaurant . From start to finish, this was a true experience with a cozy New England ambience. Absolutely worth every penny.

For other great eats in Woodstock, check out the Prince & Pauper , Worthy Kitchen and Mon Vert Cafe .

17 Easy Weekend Getaways From NYC

By Alex Erdekian and Hannah Towey

Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport Rhode Island

Weekend getaways from NYC can do wonders for the mind and soul. When in the city, most people can’t help but hustle—but a break from subway rides and cramped apartments is something we all need once in a while. (As for visitors, you too can get the true New England experience by pairing your city break with a local-loved side trip, or two.)

Disappearing into the woods, soaking up salty sea air, or getting lost in wine country all have their charms—and thankfully, all of the above are available just a few hours from Manhattan via rail, bus, or rental car . From the Hamptons to the Adirondacks, beaches, islands, and mountains are all easily accessible from New York City. Some of them may leave you wondering why New York's surrounding destinations don't get more buzz in the first place.

Below, the 17 best weekend getaways from NYC. Here's to checking them all of your bucket list. (For the best restaurants, hotels, and more in the city itself, check out our New York City travel guide .)

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

The boardwalk in Asbury Park with morning sun and shadows

The quintessential beach town: Asbury Park, New Jersey

Just over an hour’s drive

We’ve long held the opinion that the classic Jersey Shore town, Asbury Park, doesn’t get enough attention . Super accessible from the city, it’s just an hour and fifteen minutes by car on the Garden State Parkway, and only thirty minutes longer if you're traveler from Penn Station on a Bay Head-bound North Jersey Coast Line train. From Asbury Park’s bustling boardwalk to its famous mile-long beach, this town offers the perfect blend of relaxation and action. Experience the exciting local food scene by making stops at Reyla (for Mediterranean small plates) or beachside coffee shop Asbury Park Roastery. Consider staying at the Asbury Ocean Club, Surfside Resort and Residences for an elevated beachside experience or the eclectic Asbury Hotel , which has the perfect rooftop.

The suburban sanctuary: Fairfield County, Connecticut

About a one-hour train ride via Metro-North

When you’re pressed on time and need a low-key break from the city, do as commuters do and escape to the ‘burbs. Hop on the Metro-North New Haven Line out of Grand Central and take an hour train to one of Fairfield County's numerous charming towns and cities. From coastal enclaves like Greenwich and Westport to more wooded areas like New Canaan and Wilton, the variety of Connecticut's suburbs may surprise you. Fairfield County doesn’t claim the tri-state’s best beaches, to be sure, but there’s plenty of summer fun to be had along Long Island Sound: take a kayak, sailboat, or ferry between the Norwalk Islands, stroll down one of the area’s many public beaches , or savor local seafood (be sure to order a round of Copps Island oysters) at Knot Norms , Rowayton Seafood , The Whelk , or L’Escale . There’s outdoor attractions beyond the beach, too: New Canaan’s Grace Farms, Stamford’s Cove Island Park, and Darien’s newly-opened Great Island offer acres of walking paths and recreational space. Book a stay at the Inn at Gray Barns or the Delamar Greenwich Harbor hotel, or rent a cozy Airbnb to truly settle in—without settling down.

The rural retreat: Manchester, Vermont

About a four-hour drive (or bus)

When you feel the need to go off-the-grid, the Green Mountain State is always a good idea for a long weekend in nature—whether you’re after winter snow or fall foliage. The idyllic town of Manchester located nearby Stratton Mountain Resort allows for just the right amount of isolation where you can relax in peaceful solitude without sacrificing top-notch restaurants, shopping, and human interaction (should you desire). Pro tip for the driving-averse New Yorkers out there: the Hampton Jitney runs a winter route between NYC and Manchester from December to March, departing on Fridays and returning each Sunday (fares start at $69). Stay at local establishment The Equinox , or drive a few towns over to exciting newcomer The Weston .

The historical jaunt: Boston

About a four hour train ride via Amtrak Acela

New Yorkers and Bostonians may go head-to-head at times, but if you’re looking for a change of scenery without giving up your cosmopolitan comforts, a weekend trip to Boston might just be what the doctor ordered. The Amtrak Acela departing from Penn Station clocks in at just under four hours, arriving at South Station between downtown Boston and the waterfront. Upon arrival, walk along the cobblestone streets of the Freedom Trail and duck into some of the country’s finest restaurants, bars, and historic sites along the way. Take in the architecture of Boston’s South End or explore neighboring communities Cambridge and Sommerville . There’s no shortage of great hotels in Boston —old or new—making the classic New England city an ideal weekend excursion for every type of traveler.

The good-time island: Fire Island, New York

About a two-and-a-half hour drive, plus a 30-minute ferry ride

An all-time favorite summer escape, and one that is especially important to NYC’s queer community, is Fire Island. With its many towns and beaches, each boasting their own local flavor, the Long Island barrier island makes it easy to choose the spot to match your vibe. A few popular spots: Cherry Grove is a fun-loving party destination, Kismet is known for its nightlife, and Fire Island Pines is an affluent community with a dining and shopping scene and some of the island’s most expensive addresses. A worthwhile hotel option is the Madison , the boutique bed and breakfast where the cast of Fire Island stayed while shooting the recent film. (A few other spots it featured? The bar Cherry’s which offers harborside drag shows, vintage shop DENIZEN , and the Belvedere Fire Island , a palatial resort for gay men.)

The city break: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

About a two-hour drive; about an hour and fifteen minutes via Amtrak

It may be obvious, but it’s too easily forgotten by New Yorkers: the easy urban getaway to nearby Philadelphia. The city is budding with things to do, whether you’re in search of great new restaurants, fantastic art exhibits, or just a change of pace. A few of our favorite to-dos in Philly include visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art, followed by the perfect cheesesteak at John’s Roast Pork . Betsy Blumenthal, former Traveler features editor—and resident Philly expert—recommends the city’s Four Seasons for its spectacular aerial views of landmarks like Independence Hall. (For even more destination tips, check out our comprehensive Philadelphia city guide. )

Best NYC Weekend Getaways The Hamptons

The posh beach hang: The Hamptons

About a two-hour drive

For many, the Hamptons conjure visions of Upper East Siders summering in their mansions, and flitting between high society parties. A weekend is the perfect stretch of time to slip into that whirlwind before letting the city ground you once again. Classic to-dos like visiting the Pollock-Krasner house in East Hampton (open May to October), designer shopping in the villages, and waterfront dining are always a good idea, as are summery outdoor activities. Pedal around the Atlantic Avenue Beach area with a bike rental from Amagansett Beach & Bicycle Company , savor a hefty lobster roll at the Dock House in Sag Harbor, or find inner peace in bird-filled Hither Hills State Park . A classic East Hampton stay, the Maidstone Hotel is the perfect place to post up (if you don't have an invite to one of the aforementioned mansions, that is).

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Marthas Vineyard

The eclectic island: Martha’s Vineyard

A five-hour ferry ride

Sometimes an island is the best escape. Martha’s Vineyard, with its lighthouses , arcades and carousels, sandy shores, and vast landscapes fits the bill. To get there, take a five-hour Seastreak Ferry from Midtown Manhattan, fly from JFK airport, or drive to Falmouth, Massachusetts (about 4.5 hours), and pay for overnight parking before grabbing the 30-minute ferry from there. The colorful, fairytale-ish town of Oak Bluffs is one of our favorite East Coast beach towns ; there, an ideal spot to post up is Summercamp Hotel . Deeper into the island, stop at Aquinnah, which feels martian-like with its clay-red lighthouse and cliffs.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways The Finger Lakes

The wine tour: The Finger Lakes

About a four-and-a-half-hour drive

New York’s biggest wine region offers plenty of options for sampling its famous riesling—but wine tasting is hardly all the area has to offer. The adventurous can pencil dive into a gorge or wade under a waterfall. Or stay above water: Canandaigua Sailboard offers paddleboard yoga , kayaking, and windsurfing. Between four and five hours from New York City , the Finger Lakes are just far enough to be a true escape. From Ithaca to quaint Skaneateles, there are a number of places that make for an ideal home base. Boutique hotel Argos Inn in Ithaca is one of them. We love the romantic renovated mansion for the original art prints in each room, some by Salvador Dalí.

Historic Mystic Seaport in Connecticut just seconds after sunset

The nautical overnight: Mystic, Connecticut

About a two-and-a-half hour drive, three hours by train via Amtrak

Mystic’s maritime history gives this town a classic New England feel. Even today, it remains recognizable by the boats that sail the Mystic River and Long Island Sound. History buffs can immerse themselves in the lore with a visit to the Mystic Seaport Museum , where there are reproductions of the Mayflower II. For another take on all things aquatic, visit the Mystic Aquarium , where African penguins waddle and Beluga whales swim. Enjoy the charm of eateries like Nana’s Bakery and Pizza , which mills its own flour, as well as the Oyster Club for fresh and locally-caught fish. Stay a night or two at the Whaler’s Inn , which has historical pull (it’s been around since 1818), yet was renovated in 2021. Its modern comforts include four-poster beds, gas fireplaces, water views, and an excellent farm-to-table restaurant, the Shipwright’s Daughter .

Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport Rhode Island

The classic coastal destination: Newport, Rhode Island

About a three-hour drive

There’s so much to see in Newport , one of New England’s most storied summer towns. Do up your weekend T-Swift-style with winding coastline drives, half-pound lobster rolls, and wanderings through Gilded Age summer “cottages” as they were called in the 1920s. During the day, take in sweeping Atlantic Ocean and mansion views on the famed Cliff Walk or boogie board at First Beach. Then, when it starts to get dark, visit the Roof Deck at the Vanderbilt hotel for a sunset drink. For a luxury stay, consider spending a couple nights at the aforementioned Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . If you’re looking for a homey group spot, check out this two-bedroom cottage a few steps from the beach. However you do it, it'll be easy to see why Newport is one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Cold Spring NY

The quick camping trip: Cold Spring

About an hour-and-a-half train ride or drive

For an easy camping trip that doesn’t require a car, your spot is Fahnestock State Park . The campsite is near the Cold Spring stop on the Metro-North’s Hudson line—a short Uber ride covers the gap from the train station to the park itself. Squeeze everything you need for a night or two into a backpack , and relish in the empowerment and self-sufficiency of being 100% mobile. The hiking trails that run through the park connect to the vast Appalachian Trail, which touches 14 eastern seaboard states from Georgia to Maine . Besides hiking, the park has a beach on Canopus Lake, and fishing on four ponds and two additional lakes. On your way home, stop at Hudson Hil’s for a decadent brunch in the town of Cold Spring (we’re eyeing the Creole omelette) then walk to the train. If you’re looking to expand your journey throughout the region, there are many towns to love and explore in the Hudson River Valley area, including Beacon , Hudson , Kingston, and Rhinebeck.

Beautiful Lake Placid in Autumn

The off-season gem: Lake Placid

About a five-hour drive

Better known as a winter destination , Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, has a wealth of outdoor recreation in the summer months, too. At glassy, serene Mirror Lake, visitors can paddle out on canoes and kayaks . On the Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails, hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers will pass the shimmering lake, cedar trees, and a population of otters. The Olympic sites include the magical Cloudsplitter Gondola ride, a rifle range, a glass elevator, a speed skating oval, a zip line park, the Herb Brooks Arena, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. If you're craving some time indoors, don't fret: The area’s old-fashioned movie theater at Tupper Lake Municipal Park, Adirondack State Theater, is currently screening One Life. Bed down at Lake Placid Lodge , a former summer camp .

Sunset at a view looking out

The mountain escape: The Berkshires

About a three-and-a-half hour drive

The Berkshires , in western Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut, is one of those places that offers entirely different types of trips with every passing season. In the summer, the region is known for the anticipated Tanglewood season, in which the Boston Symphonic Orchestra and Boston Pops take residence and perform. In the fall, visitors can drive through some of the world’s most vibrant foliage along Route 2 and 7. Come winter, cold-weather sports are on offer—whether you’re looking to downhill ski or snowshoe. With the thaw of spring, hikes with waterfall views are easy to find at Bash Bish Falls State Park. Year-round, the food and drink scene won’t disappoint either: For an artisan cocktail after the sun goes down, visit Berkshire Mountain Distillers ; to enjoy a plate of shrimp gumbo, visit Nudel ; and to savor the notorious local cheeses, visit the North Adams’ Farmers Market. As far as hotels go, we have a few ideas. Restorative Canyon Ranch, Lenox is a six-time Readers’ Choice Awards winner, while Miraval Berkshires is one of New England’s largest and most renowned spas.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Lake George New York

The great outdoors: Lake George

About a three-and-a-half-hour drive

Set in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, Lake George offers lots of open space and a slower pace of life. Take in the natural beauty with a scenic drive on NY-9 or NY-418, admire falcons at Bolton Landing, or shack up in a tent at the Lake George Island campsite . Other summer outdoor activities include fishing, cycling down the Warren County Bikeway, and golfing at the breathtaking Top of the World course. Boathouse Bed and Breakfast is the only B&B located directly on the lake , and has the most serene water views.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways North Fork NY

The peaceful spot: North Fork, Long Island

For a low key Long Island alternative to the Hamptons, the bucolic North Fork and adjacent Shelter Island are what you're after. Head first to Greenport, North Fork’s largest town which is known for its marinas, fishing boats, neighboring vineyards, and blooming fields of lavender in July. Sound View Greenport is our pick for where to stay in town. Their fisherman-and-farmer-forward restaurant the Halyard is open, too—don't sleep on the summer truffle and fresh cavatelli. Then, take the ferry from nearby North Haven to Shelter Island, where you'll find hiking trails, osprey, and salt marshes at the Mashomack Nature Preserve, and even more land to explore on the protected beaches or in the acres of forest. If you are strategic about avoid common travel times (Friday evening out of the city, Sunday evening to return), you can be in North Fork in just two hours, making it a surprisingly quick weekend getaway from NYC.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Woodstock NY

The artist’s haven: Woodstock

The best place to start in Woodstock may be the slopes of Overlook Mountain. The limestone peak, full of red oaks, firs, and (keep your eyes peeled) timber rattlesnakes, features some interesting ruins, like the eerie remains of Overlook Mountain House, which brought tourists to the Catskills in the 19th century and sits just south of the Overlook fire tower. If privacy is what you’re looking for, you might consider this bright and airy studio loft decorated in a farmhouse style. While you’re there, scoop up quality produce at Sunflower Market , or if you don’t want to turn on an oven in the summer heat, snag a table outdoors at Phoenicia Diner . The cult favorite is a treat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Highly recommended: the Phoenicia Smash sandwich (beef griddled into caramelized onion, mustard, mayo, New York cheddar, and pickles on a Brioche bun).

weekend trip to rhode island from nyc

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, things to do at westerly in rhode island: easy weekend getaway from nyc.

Westerly is a charming little beach town along the coastline of Rhode Island. It is Rhode Island’s southernmost town. Aside from the beach, it has a small thriving downtown scene with cool shops and trendy bars. Perfect for a short weekend trip or day trip from NYC .

Napatree Point Conservation Area

If you’re a fan of the TV show Gilmore Girls , you’ll find parts of Westerly reminiscent of the fictional Stars Hollow town the characters live in. Although Stars Hollow is supposed to be in Connecticut and Westerly is technically in Rhode Island, it actually sits right on the Connecticut <> Rhode Island border! They even share a downtown with its Connecticut neighbor town Pawcatuck.

How to get to Westerly from NYC

How long should i spend at westerly, where to stay in westerly.

  • Things to do on a Road Trip to Westerly
  • Self-drive from Manhattan or Newark – The most convenient way! It takes around 2 hours one way to get to Westerly from Manhattan or New Jersey.
  • Via Amtrak from Manhattan or Newark – There is a direct route from New York Penn Station (NYP) or Newark Penn Station (NWK) to Westerly (WLY) via Amtrak. There are 5 trains per day, mostly in the early mornings and late afternoon. Tickets cost US $30-60 one way, depending on the day and timing of the train.

Downtown Westerly at night

Westerly is not that big of a town. I think 2 days is more than enough for a quick weekend getaway. It could even be a day trip if you left early enough in the morning and come back at night.

Downtown Westerly

We stayed at Winnapaug Inn , a no-frills 2-star accommodation. We knew we wouldn’t stay at the hotel much given that we’re there only for a short time, so we wanted something cheap, simple, and clean. Winnapaug Inn fits the bill. Don’t expect too much from it though!

If you want something a little bit more personal, you can try Margin Street Inn , located closer to the downtown area. It has more of that small-town Dragonfly Inn vibe that Lorelai Gilmore owns.

If being close to the beach is more important to you, then check out Hotel Maria , located right on the shore near Misquamicut Beach.

Windjammer Surf Bar

Things to do on a Road Trip to Westerly from NYC

So… Have I convinced you to make a trip to Westerly? Great! Here are some things you can consider on your road trip:

1. Stop by The Stamford Diner

Coming from Manhattan or New Jersey, you’ll pass by Stamford, a city in Connecticut. Just off the I-95 Highway, you can find Stamford Diner . It is a very typical American Diner, where breakfast is served all day – think three-egg omelets, pancakes, or two eggs with bacon and toast.

Stamford Diner

2. Visit Yale University

Also a little off the I-95 highway, about 90 minutes away from NYC, you’ll come across New Haven , a city in Connecticut. It is the home of Yale University, which I’m sure I don’t need to explain further. If you have the time, I recommend stopping by here.

Yale University

Yale University was founded in 1701, and there are tons of history here. You can go for a campus tour, which happens twice a day at 10 am and 1 pm. Reservations are required at the Mead Visitor Center . You can also check the calendar of events to see if anything is happening on campus on the day of your visit! Some of the events are open to the general public.

💡 Opening Hours: Mead Visitor Center is open Monday–Saturday: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

3. Napatree Point Conservation Area

Napatree Point Conservation Area, simply referred to as Napatree, is a long sandy beach to the south of downtown Westerly. You could enjoy a leisurely walk here at Napatree, enjoying nature and spotting different types of birds.

💡 Get some information about visiting Napatree here .

Napatree Point Conservation Area

I recommend visiting an hour or so before sunset. We circled the area by foot – we started with an easy walk along the southern shore, then once we reached the end, we turned north and walked along the northern shore. It took us around 1 hour and 45 minutes of leisurely walk to circle the entire area.

Keep in mind though, the walk on the northern shores could be a little wet (I managed to soak my shoes and it smelled awful after…) but on the way back we were greeted with this beautiful sunset.

Napatree Point Conservation Area

During our walk, we spotted plenty of horseshoe crab skeletons by the beach. It turns out, Napatree is a spawning ground for these creatures! The first time I saw a horseshoe crab (a living one) it really freaked me out. It really looked like a prehistoric creature with many legs – and that’s because they are! The horseshoe crab has existed for 400 million years.

Napatree Point Conservation Area

Despite their creepy appearance, horseshoe crabs are not dangerous. In fact, they are very useful to medical advancements . Their blue blood has a special property that helps scientists detect the presence of bacteria and helps us avoid contamination.

4. Visit Windjammer Surf Bar and Misquamicut State Beach

If you’re visiting during the summer, you have to stop by Windjammer Surf Bar. They’ll have a live band and people dancing outside on their terrace by the beach.

Windjammer Surf Bar

Bring your ID if you’re planning to drink, because they will card you at the door. I did not bring my ID and they did not give me the wristband that will allow you to order alcohol. But it’s fine by me since I wasn’t planning on drinking anyway. Instead, we got their nachos and the new england clam chowder. I loved their clam chowder – it was perfectly thick and delicious.

5. [CLOSED] Browse new reads at Savoy Bookshop & Cafe

Savoy is a cute little bookstore in the downtown area. The bookstore also has a cafe and a basement level filled with children’s books. On the upper level, you can find all kinds of books organized into different categories. What I love is that Savoy would leave little notes about their favorite reads.

Savoy Bookshop and Cafe

I found out about Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, which became one of my favorite books while browsing the featured section at Savoy!

Unfortunately, Savoy Bookshop closed down on July 2023. You can visit ReReads Bookshop just around the corner. Or you could also visit Bank Square Books and Title IX by the same owners as Savoy, which are nearby and within a 20-minute drive from Westerly.

6. Have cocktails at Perks & Corks

When the night falls, head over to Perks & Corks for a delicious dinner and some cocktails. I loved their Spinach and artichoke dip and their tomato bisque – which you can get with half of their grilled cheese sandwich.

Perks & Corks

7. Get Coffee at Junk & Java

Junk & Java must be the town’s go-to place to get coffee. When we came here at 10 AM, there was already a long snaking line by the cashier. But I can understand why, the cafe is super cute.

Junk & Java at Westerly

There is also an outdoor patio area, where most patrons prefer to sit when it’s sunny outside. This is where we opted to sit since it was such a nice day.

Junk & Java at Westerly

8. Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island

Occupying the building the 1920s building that used to be The Westerly Macaroni Factory, Grey Sail Brewery now offers a variety of beers brewed on-site. You can visit their taproom to sample their beer, wine, cocktails and enjoy live music.

Alright, that’s all I know about a short trip to Westerly! Please leave a comment below if you have anything to say.

Until next time ✨

On the grounds, guests get access to a private white-sand beach, the Mercedes-Benz Program (you can borrow and drive around town in the latest models at no charge), Ocean & Harvest Spa , and complimentary cooking classes at the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts .

2. Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is one of the most idyllic towns on the Jersey Shore, as evidenced by attractions from from the historic Congress Hall Hotel — opened in 1816 — to the paved promenade along its beaches. Stop in for fresh seafood at The Lobster House, and grab a sunset cocktail by the fire pits at the waterfront hot spot, Rusty Nail .

3. Finger Lakes, New York

Less than a five-hour drive from NYC, the Finger Lakes region is comprised of 11 pristine lakes, excellent wineries, great hiking through scenic gorges, and historical attractions. For a luxurious home-away-from-home escape, stay on Cayuga Lake at The Inns of Aurora . Here, you can check into the lavishly decorated Zabriskie House and head down the street for a cooking demonstration at Aurora Cooks , followed by a cocktail at the hotel's 1833 Kitchen & Bar . Off the property, visit the nearby Heart & Hands Wine Company to taste their pinot noirs, or enjoy a peaceful day of hiking at Watkins Glen State Park.

4. Alexandria, Virginia

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Venturing to Old Town Alexandria will help you feel a world away from the bustle of NYC. Architecture enthusiasts will love Old Town's 18th- and 19th-century facades, while the shopping-inclined traveler will enjoy patronizing the inviting local businesses. Right on the Potomac, Alexandria is one of our favorite southern U.S. cities — right up there with Savannah and Charleston — but it's only four hours from NYC by car.

5. Catskills, New York

Cooperstown is a four-hour drive from NYC through the scenic Catskill Mountains. Stay close to Otsego Lake at The Inn at Cooperstown ; built in 1874, the historic, award-winning hotel is home to 18 beautiful guest rooms. From Cooperstown, it's a short ride to the north end of the lake and Glimmerglass State Park , a perfect spot for out-of-town visitors to explore.

Meanwhile, the charming Catskills town of Roxbury is a quick, three-hour drive from NYC. Stay at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls , a lovely boutique hotel with eclectic decor. If you love to stargaze, book the astronomy-focused Galileo's Gate cottage with its own glass-ceiling observation deck.

6. Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains are an easy getaway from New York City, just under two hours away. For those who want a full nature immersion, consider a stay at Cranberry Run Campground . It's surrounded by 65 acres of woodlands, and campers can hang out at the on-site outdoor pool or explore the nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.

7. Lexington, Massachusetts

Situated approximately 15 miles from Boston in bucolic woodlands, Lexington is the perfect destination for American history buffs. Stay at the stunning 22-room Inn at Hastings Park , a Relais & Châteaux property that's centrally located to Walden Pond, Battle Green (where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired), the Hancock-Clarke House, and the Orchard House (where "Little Women" was set). You can reach this town in less than four hours from NYC.

8. Niagara Falls, New York

It'll take seven hours from NYC, but if you trek 400 miles north of the city, you'll make it to Niagara Falls, New York. The trip itself is exceptionally scenic, with plenty of opportunity for hiking or picnic lunches along the way. Once you arrive at Niagara Falls State Park , you'll be overwhelmed by the rainbows, mist, and thunderous roar generated by the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls.

9. Newport, Rhode Island

Only a four-hour drive from NYC, Newport is a must-visit for all East Coast road trippers. This summer, stay at The Vanderbilt for a taste of opulence. With 33 rooms located in the authentic former mansion of a real Vanderbilt, the property was recently renovated and offers unique experiences, like a wine tasting paired with a vinyl listening session on a vintage gramophone and tea leaf reading sessions with a professional psychic.

10. Haines Falls, New York

The Catskills are so nice that they made the list twice. With majestic waterfalls, unique towns, and beautiful scenery, the region offers incredible outdoor experiences. The hamlet of Haines Falls, in the Great Northern Catskills , is home to the highest cascading waterfall in New York state, Kaaterskill Falls . The trail, which is open year-round, is about a mile and a half round-trip. Road trippers should also head to Round Top to see Glen Falls, which doubles as a popular swimming hole during the warmer months.

11. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Drive three hours from NYC, and you'll wind up in the stunning Berkshires in western Massachusetts. While visiting, grab iced coffees and croissants from Six Depot Roastery & Cafe and picnic along Shaker Mill Pond. For a quintessentially charming New England stay, check out The Old Inn on the Green .

12. North Fork, New York

Head out to the North Fork of Long Island, which has great dining and wineries, but is still quieter than the buzzing Hampton towns on the South Fork. On your way to the North Fork from NYC, stop off at Jerry & the Mermaid for lunch. Your first winery in North Fork should be Bedell Cellars . And when you're driving back to the city, if the season is right, take a detour to see the lavender fields at Lavender by the Bay .

13. Keene Valley, Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks are worth visiting in any season. Keene is well-situated in the highest peaks of the Adirondacks, offering great downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer (we recommend taking the Giant Mountain trail at the base of Roaring Brook Falls). For a lovely bed-and-breakfast, check out the Keene Valley Lodge .

8 easy must-do weekend trips from New York City

Best weekend trip ideas from New York City

Located between New England, the Jersey Shore, Upstate New York, Long Island, and the Hudson River Valley, New York City has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to destinations for weekend trips. While the activities within the Five Boroughs are seemingly endless, it’s only natural (and healthy) to want to get out of the city for a few days to unwind. While there are hundreds of potential weekend getaways from NYC along the East Coast, there are a ton that you can reach within three hours.

But you can’t just get in your car, or hop on a train, and head to some quaint town in rural Rhode Island and expect weekend trips from NYC to run smoothly. Planning can go a long way in ensuring your weekend trip is as fun and relaxing as possible. You’ll want to determine how long you’re willing to drive. You’ll want to find luggage storage in New York City if you need to leave some bags behind. You’ll definitely want to know what to do and where to eat.

Wherever you choose as your weekend getaway destination, it’s going to be an epic trip. But where to go? Here are the best weekend getaways from New York City:

Plan a trip from NYC to The Berkshires for the weekend

The Berkshires, Western Massachusetts

The perfect weekend trip for art enthusiasts has to be the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. This stretch of the country, tucked away in the corner of the state, has turned into a go-to weekend getaway for anyone wanting to get some fresh air that’s unwilling to give up culture (even for a few days).

Distance from New York City

The main areas in the Berkshires to visit are about a three-hour drive from New York City, which is pretty reasonable for weekend getaways.

Our activity recommendations

The Berkshires has turned into one of the most prominent contemporary art hotspots in the country. This vibrant arts scene is centered around MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), with prominent arts and music festivals held there throughout the year.

Music fans looking for bucolic concert experiences should check out the Solid Sound Festival, which is organized by indie-rock luminaries Wilco. There is also the Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA, for theater junkies.

Best season to visit

Summer and fall are the best times to visit the Berkshires. June through August, you’ll enjoy the fresh summer air outside of your non-air-conditioned Manhattan apartment. In the fall, you’ll enjoy some crisp autumnal beauty, especially once the leaves change.

Weekend trip from New York to Cape May

Cape May, New Jersey

Located at the southernmost tip of the Jersey Shore, Cape May is one of the most pristine beach towns left on the Eastern seaboard and one of the many weekend getaways in New Jersey . The relatively remote location has allowed this charming town to go unnoticed, while neighboring areas along the shore have become almost overrun with visitors from NYC and Philly.

If you want a quiet, relaxing weekend trip at the beach, especially with a family, Cape May is one of your best options for a relaxing weekend getaway.

While it might feel like you’ve entered a whole new world, the trip to Cap May is only a two-and-a-half-hour drive (160 miles) from the city.

It’s a beach town in New Jersey, so hit the boardwalk. Cape May is your quintessential coastal town. There’s a main stretch with seafood restaurants and fun bars, and there’s always the beach. Look into fun outdoor activities like dolphin watching, or head one town over to the Green Creek Animal Farm to pet some alpacas.

Summer is easily the best time for a weekend getaway in Cape May. You can, however, find better deals for vacation rentals after Labor Day.

The Hamptons and Shelter Island - Long Island, New York

The most famous (and obvious) weekend trip destination from New York City is the Hamptons. This gorgeous stretch of coastline is teeming with beautiful summer homes, fun restaurants, and gorgeous water views. The Hamptons are one of the best weekend getaways for young New Yorkers looking for some nightlife to go along with your quintessential beach town experience.

There are also other areas to explore near the Hamptons, including Shelter Island and Montauk . Fire Island is another amazing option in the area for LBTQ nightlife. North Fork is another option. One of the ways to navigate this part of Long Island is to base your search on rental availability. Because you won't want to pass up a house with an outdoor pool just because it doesn't fit into your plans.

Depending on how bad the traffic is getting out of Brooklyn and Queens, you can expect a three-hour drive to the Hamptons.

Pretty standard beach town activities await you in the Hamptons. There are bars and restaurants along the water, there are numerous outdoor activities, and plenty of sandy beaches to get that tan. Renting a summer house with friends or family is the best setup for long weekends.

The nightlife in the Hamptons is also legendary and is basically an extension of the clubs in Manhattan. It gets quite rowdy on weekends during the peak season.

To enjoy the beaches and seaside towns, summer is the best time of the year to visit the Hamptons, especially if you want to experience the epic nightlife.

Weekend trips from NYC to Hudson Valley

Hudson Valley, Upstate New York

If you’ve talked to enough people in Manhattan or Brooklyn, you’ve probably heard about their transformative weekend getaway in the Hudson River Valley. It’s sometimes referred to simply as “Hudson,” but it’s really referring to the numerous towns nestled alongside the Hudson River.

It’s a popular place to rent a house for a weekend or prolonged stays, and NYC residents often try to “live like a local” during their time in Hudson. There are also a number of art galleries and historic sites that draw visitors to the area. It’s the perfect mix of urban culture and countryside charm.

Hudson Valley and the surrounding area are incredibly close to Manhattan. The drive should take just over two hours with traffic. There is also a train line that services the towns along the Hudson River.

Look into the fine dining scene in Hudson Valley, as some of the best rural restaurants in the world are situated here. There are also exceptional breweries (Hudson Valley and Suarez Family are the most renowned) as well as several vineyards for wine tasting in the area. All these make for pleasant afternoon destinations for fall trips or summer trips to the area.

There are also plenty of outdoor activities to get into, with wonderful hiking trails, kayaking along the river, and biking routes for enjoying the greenery while working up a sweat. There are also some of the best cross-country skiing trails in the northeast.

This is an all-year weekend getaway destination. During the summer, you’ll enjoy the best weather for hiking and other activities. Fall is the most beautiful, especially when the leaves change. Wintertime is also great for a weekend getting cozy in a cabin. There is also cross-country skiing this time of year.

Weekend trips from New York City to Mystic, CT

Long Beach Island, New Jersey

The Jersey Shore is an obvious weekend trip destination from New York City, but the region has a number of slightly out-of-the-way spots that are perfect for some peace and quiet. One such place is Long Beach Island , which sits just off the Jersey Shore’s coastline. With almost 20 miles of idyllic coastline, Long Beach Island is the perfect place to spend a few days in the ocean breeze. Fans of Shelter Island and Long Island in general will love this place.

Long Beach Island is only about a two-hour drive south on the shore from New York City. Getting out of the city before traffic hits its peak is imperative.

Long Beach Island is perfect for a family trip. Take the kids to the Barnegat Lighthouse, known affectionately as “Old Barney.” There’s also the Viking Village, with a number of seaside fun shops and restaurants. Pinky’s Seafood Company and Mud City Crab House are the best restaurants to grab delicious seafood and a few drinks.

It’s a beach town, so summer is obviously the best time to go. In terms of rentals and hotels, you can get some decent pre-Memorial Day and post-Labor Day deals; but the Long Beach Island experience is best from June to mid-September.

Mystic, Connecticut

This picturesque seaside fishing village is the perfect weekend getaway destination for families with young children. It’s as quaint as it gets, and that’s saying something considering it’s New England. It’s also small, with just over 4,000 permanent residents, so it will be easy to navigate with smaller kids. And just about every attraction is family-friendly.

It’s almost exactly a three-hour drive to get to Mystic along the Connecticut Turnpike.

Mystic boasts all the standard seaside attractions you’d expect from a coastal Connecticut town. You can take a boat ride on the Argia Mystic Cruises to explore the shoreline and get some beautiful views of the town. There are also the Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium, which can come in handy if the weather isn’t cooperative.

The best weekend trips to Mystic are during the summer. There’s simply too much fresh ocean breeze to enjoy, and jumping in the Atlantic is only truly comfortable later in the summer.

Newport, RI - weekend trip from Mew York

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is your standard coastal New England town… on steroids. Known for being the summer getaway for New York City’s elite, especially during the gilded age and roaring 20s, Newport boasts some of the most opulent (and well-preserved) mansions in the country. It’s also a charming town where normal folks can stay at a boutique hotel, eat a lobster roll, see some live music, and enjoy some outdoor recreation in the ocean air.

It’s just over a three-hour drive to Newport from New York City. There is also a train from Grand Central Station that will get you to Newport via Providence in a few hours.

Outdoorsy types can hike the three-mile Newport Cliff Walk. History buffs will absolutely want to go on a tour of one of the mansions. Sporting types can visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which boasts one of the most gorgeous grass courts and grounds in the sport.

Foodies will absolutely want to check out one of the many seafood shacks in town. Newport’s food scene is based almost entirely on the delightful lobster roll, which is sort of a “Rhode Island hot dog.” Anthony’s Seafood, Benjamin’s, Scales & Shells, and Flo’s Clam Shack are all notable purveyors of this tasty treat. Of course, all of them claim to serve the best lobster roll, but you should be the judge.

Weekend trips to Newport are most enjoyable during the summer months when you can enjoy the breeze off the ocean. For fall, Newport is also one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

In terms of outdoor activities, this beautiful mountain range is your closest option to New York City. Many outdoors enthusiasts from New York City plan perfect weekend trips around hiking through these mountains.

The area surrounding the mountains is massive, so you’ll have your pick of which towns you’d like to stay in. It’s best to pick a trail or activity like zip-lining and base your accommodations around that. Look into the slightly kitschy resorts for romantic weekend getaways as well. This used to be the go-to rendezvous destination for New York’s elite.

It takes about two and a half hours to reach the Pocono Mountains from NYC by car.

In terms of how close they are to NYC, the Poconos are a Manhatsnie mountaineer's dream. Some of the best terrain and hiking trails in the northeast are situated along these slopes.

Summer and fall are the best times of year to enjoy all the outdoor activities the Pocono Mountains have to offer. Spring can be lovely, but the frequent rains can get in the way of hiking.
