10 breweries and distilleries to visit in London

By Tal Dekel-Daks

London 's distillery and brewery scene has exploded over recent years, with a slew of young upstarts in vast industrial warehouses and under railway arches and historic taprooms dating to the 17th century still giving locals and tourists the fresh-from-the-cask beer fix.

MAY WE SUGGEST: The best pubs in London

KRAFT Dalston

Right opposite Dalston’s beloved Rio Cinema on Kingsland High Street, Kingsland Locke is a plant-dotted multipurpose gem. In true East London style, Kraft at Kingsland Locke doesn't just have an on-site microbrewery and gin distillery on site, but also an all-day kebab restaurant, co-working space, workout studio and coffee shop. The distillery and brewery is formed by German Kraft Brewery, Jim and Tonic Distillery and Nativo. Tours are led by an in-house sommelier and expert in German brewing tradition, who shows visitors will be around the working brewery, followed by a tasting and a tank-fresh beer selection.

Sipsmith, Chiswick

Many people credit Sipsmith for London's craft gin boom . Having opened in 2009 following a legal win repealing the Gin Act which outlawed small-scale gin distilleries in the capital, Sam Galsworthy launched Sipsmith – the first new distillery in London since 1820. The team run tours and tastings of their historically accurate London Dry Gin and newer concoctions almost every day of the week which are well worth a visit

Kanpai, Peckham & London Bridge

Along with our love for sushi and omakase restaurants, London's love for sake has skyrocketed in the past few years (including the introduction of sake-specific tasting clubs like Kamosu ). Kanpai is the UK's first sake brewery. Seven years after they opened their taproom and kitchen in Peckham, the London sake brewery is moving to Bermondsey's beer mile. The new space is set to feature 10 sake taps as well as a glass viewing platform where drinkers can actually see the sake being made as well as brewery tours and a hands-on brewing experience, and just like in Peckham, expect an izakaya-style menu to pair your sake with.

The Distillery, Notting Hill

Notting Hill's four-story ‘gin palace' is home to The Ginstitute where Portobello Road Gin was founded. Packing in two bars, a workshop, a hotel, and a 400-litre basement distillery tank named ‘King Henry’, the mammoth space on Portobello Road has several options when it comes to distillery tour experiences. Gin fans can take the three-hour-long ‘Ginstitute Experience’ which includes an in-depth journey through gin’s colourful and checkered past; a nose around the Blending Rooms where you'll create your own blend to take home (which is kept on file for repeat purchases) and several gin cocktails along the way. Whiskey and Agave fans can also take their top-notch tasting sessions, which include making your own personal blend.

The Fuller's Griffin Brewery, Chiswick

Chiswick is home to one of London's oldest and most iconic breweries, the Fuller's Griffin Brewery, which has been making beer here since 1654. The Fuller's Brewery tour runs Tuesdays to Sundays and takes you behind the scenes of the brewing process from ‘mash to cask and everything in between' and of course, ends with a sample of the full range of Fuller's line-up as well as beers and ciders from their sister breweries.

Signature Brew, Blackhorse Lane

The Walthamstow ‘Blackhorse Beer Mile’ is made up of eight breweries (that’s Wildcard, Renegade, Beerblefish, Exale, Pretty Decent, Signature Brew, Big Penny Social and Hackney Brewery) as well as London's first brandy distillery ( Burnt Faith Brandy House ). If a big beer tour isn't on the cards, one of our favourites on the line-up is Signature Brew which also doubles up as a live music venue and has one of the best burgers we've had in London.

This lovely canal-side spot by Victoria Park was once an old glue factory. It's now one of London's most exciting distilleries, East London Liquor Co. You'll find their whiskies, rums, vodkas and gins stocked in many bars across the city, including unique collaborations with craft brewery 40FT and even the Kew Gardens. But one of the best ways to try their flavours is with a whisky or gin distillery tour tasting the wandering into the depth of their barrel room.

The Bermondsey Distillery

Distilleries, breweries (and bakeries) are ingeniously carved into the arches under Bermondsey's arches by Maltby Street Market. Under one of those many arches, you'll find The Bermondsey Distillery, home to Jensen's Gin. Jensen's gin is known for using centuries-old recipes for their London dry and Old Tom expressions which are particularly delightful in a martini. Their after-hours private tours begin with a gin and tonic on arrival, followed by the brand's fascinating story, and the time-honoured processes and recipes that make their small-batch gins so unique.

6 wonderful English whisky distilleries you must visit

whisky distillery tour london

Think Scotland has the market cornered on whisky? Think again. These six English whisky distilleries deserve your undivided attention.

The whisky distilleries of England have been globally overlooked for those of their northerly neighbours for too long. Not many international visitors (or even Brits) are aware that at least 33 of the UK’s whisky distilleries are spread across England, and the whisky is not only delicious but the distilleries are a joy to visit. It’s time to cast aside your associations with gin and embrace the English whisky scene.

While Scotland has very strict regulations on how whisky should be distilled to protect the famed Scotch reputation, English whisky has a little more latitude, which means you’ll often get to try some experimental varieties. In particular, English whisky isn’t bound to using only oak casks to mature the spirit. England is also a little warmer than Scotland, which affects the speed of ageing in the barrel and can produce riper flavours.

We’ve selected six distilleries worth your time, but with whisky being produced from Northumberland to Cornwall and every region in between, you should definitely keep English whisky on your road-trip radar (a designated driver is helpful!) as it continues to find its own unique identity.

1. Spirit of Yorkshire

Launched in 2019, Spirit of Yorkshire has been steadily building accolades with its range of Filey Bay Single Malt Whisky, recently winning several bronzes and a silver at the 2021 IWSC awards. With views of beautiful Filey Bay from the windows, this is a real field-to-bottle operation; one of few distilleries in the world to grow its own barley. You can take a tour and a tasting or settle into the adjoining Pot Still Coffee Shop for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.

The spectrum of whiskies is really accessible to all palates, but do try the Filey Bay STR Finish: light and floral with layers of summer berries and vanilla ice cream, and a hint of spiciness from its finish in rioja red wine barriques.

2. East London Liquor Company

Perch yourself at the exposed-brick bar here for a slice of history: East London Liquor Company  is home to the first London-distilled whisky in over a century. Open since 2018 in a former glue factory next to canal-side warehouses and pubs in Bow, in London’s East End, it hosts distillery tours as well as a restaurant serving food from Royale , a little pop-up conceived during the 2020–2021 COVID-19 lockdown from former head chef Lucy Timm of Michelin-starred Leroy in Shoreditch.

Of its three whiskies (Rye, Wheat, ELX Sonoma), the Rye is extremely popular, with hints of toffee apple, candied orange peel and sour cherries drifting into a warm spicy finish.

3. St George’s Distillery

Located near the Norfolk town of Thetford, St George’s Distillery  is also England’s oldest. When it launched in 2006 it was the only (or only legal!) whisky distillery to open in England in 100 years. Released under The English Whisky Co., it’s now England’s most prolific malt whisky producer.

Visit for tours and tastings, as well as breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea in the restaurant. Its best-selling whisky is The English Original, which has hints of vanilla creaminess, a slightly nutty taste and a long malty finish.

4. Adnams Copper House Distillery

Producing three unique whiskies from its Copper House Distillery that sits within its brewery in Southwold, Suffolk, Adnams  is rather unique. Firstly, the owners had to challenge a law to allow them to both distil and brew on the same premises. And the brewery itself, renowned for its beer, is both energy and water efficient.

There are tours and experiences here to learn about their sustainably created single malt, triple malt and rye malt. But if you only taste one, try the rye; it was deemed the Best English Rye Whisky at the 2021 World Whisky Awards.

5. Cotswolds Distillery

Set around a beautiful yellow-Cotswold-stone house in the countryside, Cotswolds Distillery ’s architecturally designed visitor centre (completed in 2019) is a joy to visit before you even taste the whisky. There’s an open fire in the café, a wood-burning stove in the tasting room, and all the materials have been carefully selected to age with the existing surroundings.

Cotswolds Distillery (Image: Cotswolds Distillery/Facebook)

Here you can take masterclasses in distilling and blending as well as cocktail-making, and learn about how this craft whisky is made from Cotswolds barley. There are half a dozen different single malt whiskies to try, as well as new-make spirit and whisky amaro liqueurs. Start with the original Single Malt Whisky for creamy, spicy full-textured flavour with hints of Seville orange marmalade and black pepper that segues into a treacly red-fruit finish.

6. The Lakes Distillery

Right next to the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, The Lakes Distillery  is not only one of England’s largest distilleries but it takes holistic whisky experiences to another level. It even offers music-pairing recommendations for your sipping pleasure.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by The Lakes Distillery (@lakesdistillery)

You can feed the alpacas, dine in a bistro that was once a Victorian farmstead, as well as take whisky tours (the chocolate-pairing one is recommended).

It produces whiskies finished in a variety of casks (moscatel, sherry, orange wine, port), but be sure to try the Lakes Single Malt Whiskymaker’s Reserve aged in casks that previously held oloroso, pedro ximénez and red wine, for complex chocolate, caramel and toffee flavours with a hint of ginger and a creamy finish.

Whisky Lover's Guide to London

The Shard and Tower Bridge

Whisky Lover's Guide to London

July 17, 2023 –––––– Stephen Beaumont , , , ,

In the hierarchy of British cities for whisky lovers, London has not traditionally ranked very high, principally because the UK’s whisky makers were all located more than 400 miles to the north. But today Britain’s capital city has numerous nascent distilleries, including several specializing in whisky, joining a lively network of whisky bars to make this ancient city a whisky destination to rival any in Europe.

As one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, London abounds with lodging options. Choose one that has a bar you’ll want to visit anyway.

Built in what was at one time the largest school in England, St. Paul’s Hotel in Hammersmith offers 35 rooms set on three rambling floors of a neo-Gothic building. While the hotel’s entryway might seem a bit underwhelming, pride of place on the ground floor is given to Melody Whisky Bar, offering an extensive list of single malts including special Fèis Ìle releases, whiskies from shuttered distilleries, and hotel exclusives.

Borough Market HOWARD KINGSNORTH/GETTY IMAGES

If you’re not breakfasting in the cozy Gatsby’s Room at The Beaumont, stroll around the corner to Cardinals of Mayfair, an Italian café that nevertheless does a superb job on the breakfast classic known as the ‘full English.’ Divide the balance of your morning between two of London’s finest art destinations, the Tate Britain and Tate Modern, each with free admission. That’s also the case for many of the city’s major galleries and museums.

Leaving the Tate Modern, stroll over to Borough Market, where roughly a millennia of history counts it as one of the oldest and finest food markets in Europe. Peruse the stalls, sampling English cheeses and Mediterranean olives before retreating to the nearby The Whisky Exchange London Bridge , a shop that complements its impressive spirits selection with an extensive offering of whisky miniatures starting at just $5.

For lunch, treat yourself to a pint of Harvey’s Sussex Best alongside a steak and ale pie at the Royal Oak, just a five-minute walk south. Resist the temptation to while away the afternoon in its seductive grasp though, since you have both a bar and a distillery to visit.

The Whisky Exchange BEN PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY

Just two stops away on the Northern Line is the Merchant House of Bow Lane, a self-described “world of gin, rum, and whisky.” Its spirits list runs 30 pages and highlights whiskies from such far-flung distilleries as Australia’s Starward and India’s Paul John, in addition to the expected bounty from Ireland and Scotland, including treats like Teeling The Revival 1999 $30/50 ml) and Port Askaig 19 year old $41/50 ml)—as well as seven English whiskies. If it’s not busy, ask for a peek at what’s billed as London’s smallest bar, the reservation-only, four-seat Brig.

Next, it’s off to East London Liquor Company for its pre-booked Whisky Your Way tour. Following a welcome cocktail, you’ll be given a tour of the distillery that concludes in the barrel room with a sampling of a half-dozen whiskies, including the first—and, to date, only two—editions of the distillery’s own East London Single Malt.

Tate Modern MADELINE BUDDO/TATE PHOTOGRAPHY

A short rideshare brings you to a dinner like no other at Acme Fire Cult, where open-fire cooking is the rule and, unexpectedly, vegetables take center stage in dishes like Coal Roast Celeriac and Aubergine Steak, complemented by beer from the adjacent 40ft. Brewery.

After dinner, take a 15-minute stroll to MAP Maison, where the leather-bound menu features an impressive 14 pages of Japanese whiskies, a collection built up over the proprietor’s many visits to Japan. Of particular interest are selections from seldom-seen distilleries like Nagahama (Edition No. 1 at $28/50 ml) and Chichibu (Ichiro’s Malt Wine Wood Reserve at $42/50 ml).

Bimber Distillery

Begin your day by hopping on the Underground rail network, or “the tube” as it is commonly known, to one of the city’s unsung gems, Leadenhall Market, a Victorian arcade in the center of what was Roman London. There you can breakfast on magnificent pastries from Aux Merveilleux de Fred before shopping at the fifth-generation family-owned Barbour or browsing the range of cigars at Kandies.

Merchant House of Bow Lane

On your way to your next distillery, stop off at Connaught Hotel ’s famed bar and treat yourself to a Black Truffle pizza and an “ethereal” foam-topped Cloud Nine cocktail, made with raspberry and pistachio-infused Michter’s bourbon and Orange Cocchi Americano. Or really treat yourself with a 50 ml pour of Macallan M Edition 2017 for $835.

Another tube ride now takes you to Bimber Distillery , a 7 year old, single malt-obsessed operation in North Acton. Its focus on semi-wild fermentation and direct-fire distillation makes for a fascinating pre-booked tour, and an even better tasting afterward.

The Distillery & Ginstitute

A quick ride on the Central Line and a short walk up the famous Portobello Road will land you at The Distillery & Ginstitute, where a three-hour exploration of world whiskies called The Whisky Thing Experience includes a bottle of your personally blended whisky. Alternatively, enjoy people-watching with a Highball in the light-strewn downstairs distillery bar The Resting Room.

With sunset approaching, stop by your hotel to freshen up before heading to dinner with a spectacular view at Oblix at The Shard, an elegant restaurant atop one of the most iconic modern buildings in the city. Enjoy a Toki whisky-based Sayan Sour cocktail on the east side before crossing over to the west side for a delectable dinner of dover sole.

Conclude your stay with a pre-arranged visit to one of the city’s two leading private whisky clubs, Dram House at Milroy’s of Spitalfields or Soho Whisky Club. Each is located on their building’s second floor, with Dram House offering the added dimension of an outdoor cigar bar and Soho sitting conveniently atop the venerable Vintage House whisky shop, which offers whiskies dating back to the 1930s and happily stays open until 11 p.m. most days. Both clubs offer non-resident rates—$47 per person per day at the Dram House; $147 annually at Soho, plus a $60 joining fee—which, after your remarkable 48 hours here, will probably have you thinking makes a lot of sense for the future.

BIMBER DISTILLERY

OUR SINGLE MALT WHISKIES ARE MADE WITH DEDICATION AND PASSION. EVERY RELEASE IS A WORK OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND VIRTOUSITY

Bimber Distillery was founded by whisky lovers, with a mission to produce high-quality single malt whisky with character, using traditional methods that are rarely seen today.

The journey begins at our single farm, where 100% of our barley is grown. It is then traditionally floor malted, hand-mashed and fermented slowly for seven days in our wooden washbacks that were hand-made at our own cooperage. We use direct fire to heat our small copper pot stills, and mature our spirit in hand-selected casks. Finally, our whisky is bottled onsite at our distillery.

Our hand-crafted approach to whisky production passionately combines traditional methods, expertise and an absolute commitment to quality.

Bimber’s first casks were laid down on the 26th May 2016 and we released our inaugural single malt whisky (The First) three years later in September of 2019 – the limited release of 1,000 hand numbered bottles sold out in 3 hours. Bimber will be releasing a wide range of new single malt whiskies – all with our trademark accessible, fruit forward character – all handcrafted with passion.

SB Awards 2021 Special Commendation.jpg

SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

Crafted with admiration, and drawn from our growing inventory of fruit-forward single malts, the Shoulders of Giants pays homage to a diverse tapestry of thinkers, innovators and visionaries whose contributions to our world and society continue to resonate to this day.

The Shoulders of Giants releases showcase the growing maturity and complexity of our single malt whiskies, with each giant offering its own distinctiveness – both inside and outside of the bottle.

THE FOUR ELEMENTS COLLECTION

Available from Master of Malt

The ancient Greeks believed that everything was made up of four elements: fire; earth; water and air. Bimber’s traditionally-focussed production processes do not draw their ancestry quite this far back – but nevertheless our single malt whisky is still profoundly underpinned by the impacts of fire; earth; water and air.  Releasing throughout the remainder of 2023 - The Four Elements Collection, produced exclusively for Master of Malt presents a showcase of Bimber’s elementally-charged production processes across four unique bottlings. From single-farm, floor-malted barley and the use of mineral-rich London water, through to meticulously sourced peat and the extensive use of hand-charred casks – The Four Elements Collection explores and celebrates our craft, artistry and rigorous attention to detail.

These very special releases have been produced in partnership with Transport for London. As such, they will be sold via a new website dedicated to the Underground Collection.

Where to Drink

Distillery day tours in and around london, we have curated a list of distilleries in and around london that you can visit for day tours to give yourselves and your loved ones a great time..

Photo for: Distillery day tours in and around London

While the nation has been engulfed in a lockdown, there is always something to look forward to. Christmas is around the corner and there is hope for better things to come. While being in the comfort of your own homes, finding something new to do, browsing through the Netflix lists of things to watch and enjoying footballing action on the weekends, here is one more activity you can add to your post lockdown list of things to do (some might have been accomplished already). In the spirit of Christmas and the spirit of giving, we have curated a list of distilleries in and around London that you can visit for day tours to give yourselves and your loved ones a great time.

East London Liquor Company: Founded in the year 2014, with the vision of providing people with great liquor at a decent price, East London Liquor Company is gaining rapid strides in London with the knowledge of their craft and the excellent tours they provide at their distillery. East London Liquor Company produces whiskey, gin, vodka and rum and their award-winning spirits can be found across the United Kingdom stores and in over twenty international markets as well. With the way their business is progressing, it is easily evident that they know their spirits and you can get to know them too with a closer look! East London Liquor Co has tours of their distillery divided into three parts, those being a whisky tour and tasting, gin tour and tasting, or the distillery tasting experience. With the range of whiskies and gins in store, we would suggest you take them all and have a great time. Along with the tour they also have a bar and restaurant that ups the ante with its menu and offerings. A great way to spend a day we say.

Jensen’s Distillery: Situated in Bermondsey is this quaint distillery that is a gin lovers paradise. When owner Christian Jensen first got the taste of vintage gins, it was a connection that called to him big time. Through Jensen’s distillery, he honored this connection as he has gone on to make a gin that finds balance in the modern and the lost art of making fine gin. Distilled in small batches using fine botanicals, Jensen’s brings to you gin as it should be consumed. Their distillery is housed at Bermondsey, a trade center during the nineteenth century, perhaps another one of Christian Jensen’s ode to the gin of the olden times. Their distillery is a converted railway arch that adds to the glamour of the old school touch that Jensen’s is come to be recognized with. Try their gin, get a feel of Bermondsey and you will come back from your day tour with a smile on your face. With a business spread across continents, Jensen’s is doing the gin business right and bringing glory to what it stands for.

Sipsmith Distillery: From gin, we shift the focus to a distillery that is head over heels in love with the craft of making vodka along with gin for the people. A classic tale of two friends attracted to martinis and the fine craft of making spirits, Sipsmith Distillery was brought to life by Sam Galsworthy and Fairfax Hall in 2007. They were joined by drinks aficionado Jared Brown and thus the three embarked on bringing to life London dry gin for the people and their love for gin. Through two years of sheer hard work and finding the perfect balance, in 2009 Sipsmith the gin was introduced to the world. Fast forward to a decade later and the brand is going strong and as luck would have it, giving distillery tours to fellow gin lovers. From festive tours (virtual) to corporate events and distillery tour vouchers, Sipsmith Distillery has a range of tours to offer for aficionados and budding gin lovers alike. Who knows, a visit to Sipsmith and you will be inspired to become a gin smith yourself!

Bimber Distillery: If you are a single malt lover, guess what, you have more in common with the people at Bimber Distillery than you know. The traditional art of creating single malt whisky, Bimber Distillery uses barley grown 100 percent at their farms, which is then hand mashed, floor-malted and fermented for seven days to get it ready to perfection. In their range of whiskies, Bimber distillery offers you a range of whiskies from bourbons to distillery exclusives, which brings us to their distillery tours. Bimber has a very nicely laid out distillery tour which consists of a welcome drink of whisky, a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making their fantastic range of single malts and a chance to enjoy a selection of their single malts right where it is made. An experience that is bound to increase your love for whisky.

Chase Distillery: There is just something so inviting about a family-owned distillery that we cannot keep away from writing about them. One such distillery that resides in Herefordshire, just 23 miles from London is the Chase distillery, owned by the Chase family that produces vodka and gin from potatoes grown at their farm. Having been producing potatoes for the local supermarkets and more, Will Chase wanted to do something more that brought him in contact with the end consumer. He started with potato chips but then moved to make vodka in 2008 which is when Chase Distillery was born. Now run by his sons Harry and James, the business has stayed within the family and they have grown. The passion for showing their craft and product to the people didn’t just end at the products, it carried forward to the distillery which has now got tours, virtual tours and even 360-degree tours of the distillery for visitors and vodka, gin lovers. The weather is beautiful, the distillery is fantastic and so is the Chase family, what more does one need for a great day?

City of London Distillery: Gin has always been a big thing in London. It was there and wildly popular when technology was a term that did not exist. It was there when innovations started taking place and it is there today when London has become a hub for high-class living and lifestyle of the highest order. One of the biggest reasons for gin keeping its popularity in the city and the world is the City of London Distillery which found its way into gin folklore in 2012. Since their inception, they have added a wide variety of gins from Sloe to Old Tom and from Murican Orange gin to Six Bells Lemon gin. The city of London Distillery offers a great gin tour where you can get to learn about how they make their gin while getting a taste of their products. The plus here is that you also get a chance to try and make your own gin, hone your skill.

Taxi Spirit Co: How would you like to be a brief part of history? The tours and experiences from Taxi Spirit Co allow you to do just that. London’s first-ever rum distillery, Taxi Spirit Co is renowned for producing great quality rums with their first product Cabby’s White Rum getting its first run in the market in 2018. A rich, full-bodied white rum with hints of cane in its notes, and a hint of oak along with coconut and citrus. It is bottled in batches of 250 bottles only and its success has led to them also bringing to the table Cabby’s Gin. Taxi Spirit Co offers corporate and private tours at a charge of 450 pounds per group, with the group strength being 20. A new distillery in the market that deserves your attention, Taxi Spirit Co calls for a great one-day distillery tour experience for Londoners.

English Spirit Master Distillers: Dr. John Walters, the founder and managing director of English Spirit Master Distillers started this venture when he wanted to build a still and distill his own rum. Since then, John and his distillery have never looked back. Through their years of distilling experience, John and his team have made tweaks to perfect their rum which is essentially eight different rums that have been made using a fine technique that John Walters has passed down to his team. Under the current restrictions, English Spirit Master Distillers bring experiences at 5 pm on weekdays and Saturdays at 11 am 2 pm and 4 pm. The tasting samples are given in 50 ml bottles and are available in all eight variants of rum. Come for the tour and stay for their great rum, made by a master distiller and his team.

Beefeater The Home of Gin: One of the oldest and most perhaps the most iconic of gin makers in London, Beefeater in Kennington is a gin lovers paradise. A gin that is crafted with a recipe that dates back to the 1800s, their gin has been closely intertwined with the history of London Dry Gin. They have preserved their original stills to date which visitors and connoisseurs can see from the visitor centers during a tour of the distillery. At 1.5 hours of tour time and priced at 16 pounds, a self-discovery tour where you will be accompanied by a guide takes you down memory lane and gives you an insight on how gin came to be so popular. Along with comparative tasting and a look at the process of making gin, the tour culminates with a glass of Beefeater’s own gin and tonic. A delightful way of ending a day tour enriched with history and information.
