Malibu clutches the cusp of the Santa Monica Mountains as they spill down from the coast ranges of California into the Pacific Ocean. The spot might be best known as a surf mecca and a glitzy hub for A-lister villas. However, the wave-splashed beaches and palm-speckled boulevards are just a part of the story.
There’s something else to look forward to in this corner of the Golden State: Malibu wine safaris .
Yep, the dust-billowing, chaparral-topped peaks that rise above this happening town can lay claim to some of the most accomplished viticulture on the West Coast. As if to say “move over Napa,” the wineries unfold in rolling blankets of grapevines between the canyons and sage scrub.
Many – like the idyllic Malibu Solstice Vineyard – have gorgeous locations, with sweeping views of the Cali peaks helping to make them a top backdrop for weddings and other events. Others boast long histories: The likes of the Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards go back all the way to the late 1970s.
This guide to the best Malibu wine safari and wineries offers plenty of fodder for that grape-tasting odyssey. It’s laden with romantic places for sipping a crisp Zinfandel while the rollers of the Pacific crash onto the rocks nearby. In addition, it’s got chic cellar doors where you might even meet a Hollywood celeb or two on the weekend. Let’s get started…
Malibu Wine Safaris
©Photo by Official Malibu Safari on Instagram
Getting us started on this list of Malibu’s most attractive wine adventures is the original Malibu Wine Safari . It’s run by the folk over at the acclaimed Saddlerock Ranch – the home of the alluring Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards (but more on that one later). Here, we focus solely on the unique wine-and-nature combo that’s offered by their Malibu Wine Safaris packages themselves…
Whisking you away from the hub of Downtown LA, some 30 minutes out to where the mountains meet the ocean, the excursion is something to remember. You’ll ride in open-air game vehicles that are just like the ones they use in the Kruger National Park and other iconic South African reserves.
The trip takes you to a 1,000-acre estate that’s home to – of course – succulent Cali wines, along with a unique menagerie of wild creatures. That means you can spot bison, zebra, alpaca, and giraffes in between glugs of Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh, and did we mention that the location is simply gorgeous. Upon the sun-scorched tops of the Santa Monica Mountains, where the sunsets are romantic in the extreme, and there are groves of eucalyptus, oak and olive trees peppering the slopes.
Malibu Solstice Vineyard

Few vineyards in California – nay, the world – could lay claim to such a beautiful locale as the Malibu Solstice Vineyard . Perched on a series of crumpled chaparral hills just above Santa Monica town, this one enjoys roundabout panoramas of the peaks and the coast. On one side, you can watch as the waves break against the points of Zuma. On the other, you can gaze at the hazy heat drifting down into Escondido Canyon.
But enough about the gorgeous setting. What about the wine? Accolades have come thick and fast for the exclusive tipples of Solstice. The winery was a winner at the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition, where its rich red Cabernet Sauvignon won first place. It’s easy to see why, too – the winery has worked hard to mimic the terroir of Bordeaux’s own bottles. It was entirely planted from French clones when it started in the 1990s. And nothing but hand-picking takes place on the farm.
Of course, given the stunning backdrop offered by the Santa Monica Mountains, any Malibu wine safari to the Malibu Solstice Vineyard promises to be one to remember. Just don’t be surprised to rock up and find an event is happening. Weddings, reunions, honeymoon parties – they are all commonplace in Solstice.
Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards
©Photo by Official Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards Homepage
Set under the silhouette of a bulbous rock spire on the bends of the Mulholland Highway, Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards is surely up there with the best in California. Once upon a time, this was a rustic family ranch. However, devastating bush fires in the 1970s meant that the land went up for sale. Soon after, it was bought as a riding coral by Ron Semler, who had plans to plant avocado trees and escape from the buzz of LA. With the ups and downs of the Santa Monica climate, avocados weren’t to be. A new crop was soon chosen and in by 1996, the farmlands were transformed into fields of young Cabernet Sauvignon.
Fast forward a few decades and the Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards is now a must for any wine lover cruising up the Pacific Coast. After undergoing a total facelift starting in 2015, the whole facility is now cutting-edge and stylish. In addition, visitors can enjoy myriad labels from the fields. You will taste gold-tinted white wines that have undertones of sweet lemon and citrus. Pinot Grigio variations have subtle hints of floral cherry and fruit. In terms of red, you can’t miss the famous Semler Reserve – a dark, full-bodied flavor with tobacco and mahogany infusions.
Perhaps more than anything, the Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards is known as the home of the original Malibu Wine Safari . That combines the wild adventurers of a South African game walk (the ranch hosts giraffes and rare waterfowl) with classic wine tasting, California style. Alternatively, standalone tasting rooms are open daily from 11am-7pm. Be sure to make advance reservations.
Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate
©Photo by Official Malibu Rocky Oaks on Instagram
Like many of the vineyards where you can head off on a Malibu wine safari, the Rocky Oaks Estate is a combo of wedding venue and cellar door. You’ll find it set right in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, virtually equidistance from Thousand Oaks and the strips of Malibu itself. That means stunning views that are sure to tug at the heartstrings! Yep, there’s really nothing like watching the sunset glow cornfield-yellow across the chaparral from here. And there’s something special about the way the green grape rows look against their backdrop of rugged ridges and scraggly Cali oak trees.
If you do head to Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate for the wine, not a wedding, you’re in luck. There are only 37 acres of planted grape. And all work is hand-done. The result? A meticulously crafted set of bottles that are sure to have you coming back for more. The patchwork of different varieties grown in the grounds means you can enjoy some tantalizing blends – think Syrah and Cabernet whites with toasty, nutty finishes. Alternatively, there’s the rounded Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir, which seem to meld acidity and subtlety for a perfect meat accompaniment.
But the Malibu wine safari options don’t end there, either. The folk at Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate also organize wine cruises in Malibu bay, which take place on luxurious A-lister yachts on the Pacific. And this is a wedding venue extraordinaire, coming complete with five-star lodgings and an infinity pool that’s got a view to die for.
The Rosenthal Malibu winery
©Photo by Official Rosenthal Malibu winery
Another popular choice for wine aficionados near the glinting West Coast beaches of Malibu is the Rosenthal winery . Sat right at the trailheads that start to wiggle and wind into the rugged Malibu Newton Canyon, the tasting rooms and grand buildings of this estate is something truly special. Their grounds are planted with the usual Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. And there are extra vines of Merlot, Viognier, and Chardonnay to ensure variety. In addition, Rosenthal Malibu runs the Surfrider label, which collates the top-rated grapes grown across the Golden State, with some of the proceeds donated to charities that help preserve the ecosystems of the Pacific Ocean.
Regular viticulture workshops are on offer in the on-site cellar door. That has even won awards and been listed among America’s 50 top bars. It’s easy to see why. From Friday to Sunday people flock to the lantern-lit gardens to enjoy live music and food trucks. There are occasional stand-up comedy nights to boot, and breezy terraces and patios with oodles of seating. It’s a fine place to meet and mingle with the high society of LA!
A tour of the vineyard itself is another must. Dashed through a small valley bottom between wooded hills, this one gets cooling breezes of the ocean. The Pacific Coast Highway is just a short drive away, but the vistas are all emerald green vines and woodland and hazy hills. Private guided walks around the facility cost $75 per person. There’s a minimum of eight guests per group, and each package includes a tasting of Rosenthal wines.
Malibu Wine Hikes

Brought the walking boots and hiking poles? Want to get out and about in the sunny Santa Monica Mountains? Keen to feel the earth crumble beneath your feet and smell the pine forests on the slopes? Well, these days, you can do all that and still get to enjoy about classic Cali wines. Cue Malibu Wine Hikes.
These journeys are the brainchild of the same folk responsible for the ever-popular Malibu Wine Safari. They’re perfect for those who like to combine adventure with great bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon. You can start your tour at the Saddlerock Ranch on the edge of the Rocky Oak Park. From there, a two-mile loop trail meanders through oak groves, under rock-ribbed peaks, and amid regimented rows of grapes.
When the walking route is complete, it’s time to pop the corks. The wine begins to flow, and guests get a tasting session that involves three tipples. Each is fresh from the barrels of the Semler Malibu Estate Vineyards. Wine hikes cost in the region of $35 per person. There’s a minimum group size of 10 required to run the event.

Presenting themselves as a more local alternative to the Malibu Wine Safari packages that abound, the people at Hidden Malibu Wine Country Tours promise a rustic taste of Ventura country and a day spent in the simple company of vines and mountains. The trips will transport you far from the buzz of metropolitan life in Hollywood and LA. They take you out to the bucolic hills in private transportation. Luxury rides in limos and dedicated shuttle buses are even available.
Then, you’re treated to tasting sessions and guided walks through three wineries. They’ll showcase the trademark tipples of the region, with a variety of reds and whites. There’s a stop for lunch included. And the real draw? You get a dedicated, in-the-know private guide the whole way. That means you can ask any questions about the terroir or the history of the area.
Hidden Malibu Wine Country Tours run trips throughout the week and weekend. The average cost of an excursion is $225 per person, which includes lunch. In addition, possible to organize larger events and corporate outings on request.
This is just a taster (no pun) of the sort of awesome wine events that are on offer near Malibu. From Malibu Wine Safari twists to chic wineries, there are plenty more.

Malibu Family Wines and Safari: Feed Yaks & Zebras at a Malibu Winery
Located in the hills above Agoura Hills, lies a 1,000 acre winery that is home to one of the only wine safaris I have ever heard of. This is in addition to the fantastic outdoor seating area, and the atmosphere they have at their traditional wine tasting counter, which makes for fun half-day adventure in the Malibu Hills. I mean, when have you got to feed Yaks and Zebras on the same day that you tasted upscale wine? Here is all the information.
- Wine Safari prices vary but start at $65 for 90 minutes (As of 2016)
- Busy on the weekends
- Also offer hiking tours as well
- Information as of 2016
When you arrive for the safari, you will be shown the awesome stadium-style seating jeep that you will be using for this adventure. They usher you onto the back property and then start the tour of the massive grounds.
The first animals we saw were the small herd of four buffalo that greet guests as they enter. I have always liked buffalo, so it was fun to see them up close.
Next, we went to the area where we got to interact with the animals and feed them. Our guides had a selection of carrots that we used to feed everything from alpacas and mini horses to yaks and zebras. It was great; here are some pictures.
I would have to say my personal favorite was the yak; he reminded me of my bulldog and seemed like a big teddy bear.
From there, the tour headed around the family’s house and past the giraffe, which was featured in Hangover 3, and a camel. We couldn’t interact with either of these, but they were still fun to see from afar.
The tour also has a few fun stops along the way, like the door to nowhere and a frame that “frames” one of the best views on the property.
About halfway through the tour, you will see a lake and a small house that we were told you could rent. This seems like it would be an enjoyable way to spend a night with friends on the property, and I might have to look into it more sometime in the future.
The bus continued to wind around the property until it stopped at a quaint little house that is one of the most used wedding spots on the property, and it is easy to see why.
The house has a bedroom and area for the bride and groom to get ready in it, and it overlooks the Conejo Valley.
Even the altar where the ceremony takes place is beautiful and minimalistic, making it perfect for a lovely wedding. Combine that with hills full of vineyards, and you have a great spot to get married or just to relax and take in the views.
This is where you will taste wine as well before heading back to the main area to taste the rest.
The Tasting Area
After heading back to the main area, we walked the ground to see some of the cool attractions they have here as well. One of the most famous is the wine sign that mimics the love sign in Pittsburg. It is heavily photographed, and you can see it at the top of this post.
They also have a wagon with a fish tank, lots of old cars and tons of seating, even an old school bus you can sit in.
The best part about it is that you can bring your own food in to have a makeshift picnic while on the grounds trying wine. It is by far one of the most fun wineries I have been to in a while.
All in all, Malibu Family Wines is a great way to get out of the city and spend a fun day with friends. I can’t wait to go again and would love to hear what you think in the comments.

Safari and Glamping In Wine Country | Wine Country Adventures
Allison Levine [May 2017]
A trip to wine country is for wine tasting, of course. But in between winery visits, there are restaurant stops, perhaps an afternoon at the spa and shopping. Why not go on safari while you are there are well. Yes, a safari, just like in Africa!
A visit to Safari West can last a few hours or a few days. A tour around Safari West is approximately three hours long, with a 45-minute walking tour and a two-hour tour by jeep. The guides are all exceptionally knowledgeable about the animals and make the visit informative and fun. There is also a behind the scenes tour to feed the animals.
But, in case you forgot that Safaris West was in wine country, there are a few fun ways to include wine, and beer, into the Safari.
Brews and Buffalo Private Safari
Winos and Rhinos Private Safari
During the three-hour safari drive, stop on a hilltop, relax and enjoy a selection of Francis Ford Coppola wines, as well as the house South African wines, paired with local artisan cheeses and breads.
Cheetahs and Chardonnay Private Safari
This exclusive safari will get you an up-close and personal visit with the cheetahs and their handlers, followed by wine.
Take a little side trip from winery visits during your next visit to Sonoma and go on a glamping safari.

Where To Go Wine Tasting in Malibu California
Top Wine Tasting Experiences in Malibu for 2024
For Winetravelers keen on wine and waves, Malibu is the place to go. What’s more, you’ll have opportunities for celebrity spotting, surfing, beachcombing, hiking, cycling, yoga, and of course wine tasting.
Malibu Wine Hotels
Classic vw bus malibu wine tour or 4×4 vineyard tour, malibu rocky oaks estate vineyards, malibu farm pier cafe, malibu wine tasting travel guide.
If you’re picturing vineyards and wineries along the beach, you’re in for a surprise. Tucked away in the Santa Monica Mountains between the Pacific Ocean and the Mulholland Highway lies the Malibu Coast AVA. This 46 miles long and eight miles wide terrain rises to above 3000 feet and is home to 198 acres of vineyards and 52 vignerons. While the Woolsey Fire burned many of Malibu’s vineyards, this is still a robust and beautiful wine touring area.
The Malibu Coast was granted AVA status in 2014, but wine grapes have grown in the area since 1824. Interestingly enough, before Prohibition, Los Angeles County was California’s largest wine producer. The first contemporary vineyard was planted in 1985 by restaurateur Michael McCarty, under one of California’s most respected wine professionals, Dick Graff of Monterey’s Chalone Vineyard.
Fun Fact: Much of the Malibu AVA sits on highly coveted red lava soil formations. This is similar to deposits on the Sonoma Coast, making the soils of the two regions nearly identical.
Only recently has Los Angeles County permitted the combination of vineyards and wineries, so “at the vineyard” tasting rooms are relatively few. Compared to larger California wine regions like Napa or even Santa Ynez, you can’t really bike from one winery to another or walk through the front door of a Malibu winery’ tasting room.
In fact, a Malibu winery is not necessarily the best place to sample Malibu wines. Instead of driving to visit the handful that does, head to Cornell Winery & Tasting Room , an Old West-themed wine bar on Mulholland Highway. Although initially planned as a winery, zoning laws couldn’t be changed, so it’s a retail and wine tasting hub featuring almost all wines in the Malibu wine scene. Here you can order Malibu wine tasting flights, wine by the glass, or purchase a bottle of wine to take away. You can also check in to the neighboring Old Place Restaurant next to Cornell, a legendary Malibu restaurant hangout.
As Malibu evolves from celebrity sand and surf local into an A-list wine region, you don’t have to look far for activities to pair with its wines. Hiking, cycling, yoga, al-fresco movie-going, and of course, beachfront wine tasting are all part of Malibu wine country’s one-of-a-kind personality.

Making a reservation ensures that the winery can accommodate your group and provide the best possible experience. We highly recommend contacting the wineries in advance to inquire about their reservation policy.
Are Malibu wineries family and pet-friendly?
Many Malibu wineries are family-friendly and offer outdoor spaces where children can safely enjoy the scenery while the adults partake in wine tasting. However, not all tasting rooms may be suitable for children. Regarding pets, some wineries welcome well-behaved dogs in their outdoor areas, but it is best to check with each winery beforehand to confirm their pet policy.
Fun Fact: Should you want the ultimate Malibu Wine Country souvenir, the entire Rosenthal–The Malibu Estate vineyard property is for sale for somewhere around $38 million!

My First Trip to Napa and myself and my buddy set up Bruce for our Saturday Tour . Picked us up timely at our Resort and proceeded to 4 local small "Cult Wineries" and a lunch stop in Calistoga at a local market. His Lincoln Navigator was perfect for the 2 of us but could have been up to 5 with no issue. Each winery we visited was off the beaten path and they knew him and treated us like special guests. We tasted only the best of the best wines througout the tour. His knowledge was in short REMARKABLE. He knew everything not only from the intricate way the valley was formed, but its history, and everything in between. I learned more in 1 afternoon from Bruce on growth, harvest, crush, barreling and to the bottle than I knew in all my prior years. Bought some quality wines that you won't see anywhere and I with my highest reccomendation tell you that if your going to tasting in Napa Don't hesitate not 1 second. BOOK BRUCE AND LET HIM HANDLE IT FOR YOU.. You will not be disappointed... SIMPLY STATED DON'T MISS THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great day with Bruce! We started off at Merry Edwards where we were treated to a lovely sit down tasting. Loved the Chardonnay! Then off to Benovia for another great tasting. Lunch at Chloe's which was ver yummy! Bruce is very knowledgeable about the Vineyards, the wines and the region. I learned more today about wine, than I had learned in the last 20 years. After lunch we were off David Coffaro. We ended our day at Acorn Winery with a lovely visit and tasting with the owners Betsy and Bill. A lovely day and a great experience!
Bruce is an unbelievable host. He's knowledgable, funny and charismatic. We had a great day with him in Napa and visited 5 wineries, from places open to the public to private tastings with owners. We walked in as complete novices and left believing we were experts. Definitely call him whether you're a beginner or a pro- he'll find the best vineyards for you!
Darioush vineyard
We were in Napa for the first time at the end of September and a friend had recommended that we contact Bruce. From the first email all that way to the big day,he was a great host. He stared out by recommending a few great places to stay and then we confirmed our tour date. I have never learned more about wine and literally every single winery was better than the one before. They were small private locations that knew Bruce well and treated us to tasting experiences that we never imagined. EVERYONE going to Napa needs to contact Bruce, really the best ever!
My boyfriend and I found Bruce on google when searching for an affordable wine country tour for two. I ended up choosing Bruce because he was the first to respond to my inquiry and sent a detailed description of what his tour would entail vice the other companies which sent one sentence replies. Bruce sent us detailed instructions on how to take the bus/ferry from downtown SF and picked us up in Vallejo. From the minute he picked us up Bruce entertained us with his humor and deep knowledge of the Napa Valley and its wine industry. All of our tastings were with private wine makers on small vineyards. We walked away with over 14 bottles of amazing wine and will happily remember each of the winemakers who personally hosted tastings for us when we eventually drink them years from now. I highly recommend Bruce to anyone who wants an off-the-beaten path and incredibly personal tour of Napa or Sonoma. We'll definitely be back to tour Sonoma with Bruce next time!
Bruce walking us through the entire wine-making process and V. Madrone.
Bruce is the most wine expert I've met in my life. If you plan go to Napa, you need to do this w/ Bruce.
I cannot believe that there is anyone in the business better than Bruce at wine country safari. He taught us not only about the history of the valley, but also about each winery's specialty as well as each wine's differences.. I have had multiple visits with Bruce but most importantly I won't go back to Napa or Sonoma without scheduling time with him. Please trust that you are in good hands.
This is an exceptional trip. It is goes well beyond the value you would get from larger corporate wineries. We saw the toured the Napa area. First off these are private tours. We had 5 people in our group, which makes it such a more personal experience. You also get more time to ask and learn more from your guide about the region, the history, and the wineries and wines themselves. Some of the wineries you are not even able to see without this tour. There is not a single wine I had that I didn't like, I was honestly wowed. Just when you think you know about wine, you experience so many wines of such extraordinary quality and you are awed yet again. This will change your outlook on what a quality wine actually is and it may sound silly to say to expect to buy at least a bottle at each place you visit, but expect to buy AT LEAST a bottle of wine from each place you are taken to. We ended up having to check an extra case on our flight back! This is truly a one of a kind experience and you will not regret booking it. We also got the experience to stop at a wonderful little olive oil shop and do some sampling there as well. Bruce is a guide who knows his stuff and isn't into the fluff of what many wines have succumb to. He brings you to a variety of places to make this a well rounded full day trip. This trip taught me so much and made me appreciate this area and the hard work that comes out of it more than I thought and I can honestly say this trip exceeded every expectation I had.
Bruce is impressive, with the level of knowledge on wine, the industry, the process, the vineyards and inspiring with his passion! To preface, I have never taken the time to write a review, however our experience with Bruce was phenomenal! Bruce offered not only a memorable wine day of touring in Napa for 3 of us, taking care of every logistics, even providing schedules of public transport options from San Fran, but offered an experience that will always stand apart. Having had other 'tour' experiences in Napa, we each were very pleased with Bruce's knowledge of the cult wineries and relationships in Napa, however impressed with his level of knowledge on all aspects of the industry, his passion and desire to share it with us, despite likely falling amongst the 'average' consumer with a joy! My friend lives in San Fran and plans to use Bruce again. We plan to use Bruce again for our next trip, if we are blessed again with Bruce's availability. Book Bruce and you will can count on your experience being the best! In addition to Bruce's passion, he is witty and enjoyable. Enjoy!

Safari West Animal Park: Africa in Napa Valley
If you've ever wanted to rest in the lap of luxury while surrounded by nature in Napa Valley , Safari West Animal Park may be just the right place for you. Safari West is home to more than 800 wild animals, but it's not a zoo. Instead, the 400-acre wildlife preserve in Sonoma County is part bed and breakfast and part safari adventure. It's closer to home (for most of us) than Africa, located between Santa Rosa and Calistoga, just north of Napa Valley.
You can stay overnight in their luxury tent cabins or take one of their guided tours. It's a fun experience for families and for anyone who loves to see wild animals. You even can sip champagne with giraffes and go on safari under the warm California sun.
Wildlife Tours
Safari West's jeep tours are open to the public, even if you aren't staying overnight. If you're visiting Napa Valley for a weekend, think about taking a break from the wineries to tour, as Safari West puts it, "the spirit of Africa in the heart of wine country."
You can take a three-hour Safari Adventure. You may see zebras, blue wildebeest, cape buffalo, watusi cattle, and kudu. These are only a few of the more than 800 animals that live on the Sonoma Serengeti at Safari West. In addition to their standard tours, Safari West also offers private tours and themed tours, including a Valentine's Day tour that focuses on the mating habits of the animals, as well as more traditional photo safaris and sunset safaris.
For the classic adventure tour, children must be at least 4 years old. Toddlers under the age of 4 can join their party on the walking portion of the tour only.
Staying Overnight
Safari West is open for overnight stays March through December. They offer a few styles of luxury tents and serve breakfast. A night at Safari West will cost about as much as a luxury hotel in nearby Calistoga, but on selected dates, they offer discounted rates, which are listed on their website .
The accommodations are "glamping" (glamorous camping) at its best, with plush beds, hot showers, polished wood floors, copper basins in the private bathrooms, and one-of-a kind hand hewn furniture. It's the perfect destination for families looking for a bit of adventure and luxury, and friends who want to escape into the wilderness, but want to have a porcelain throne nearby.
Children of all ages are welcome. If they're less than two years old, there's no additional charge for them to stay. Visit Safari West for a memorable birthday celebration or just to treat your family to the real inspiration behind the neighborhood jungle gym.
Necessary Information
Tours are given daily. Reservations are required for both overnight stays and safari tours. Visit the Safari West website for more information.
For both your pet's safety and that of the animals, no pets are allowed at Safari West at any time. Service animals aren't allowed on the Safari Tour and they can't stay behind in your private vehicle while you go without them, but there is a crate available to kennel your service animal while you're on tour. Contact Safari West ahead of time to make arrangements.
Travel Tips
Location: Even though Safari West's address says Santa Rosa, they're actually closer to Calistoga. You can get there from either town.
Napa With Kids: Napa Valley can be kid-friendly, especially with places like Safari West and kid-friendly wineries . Although your little ones shouldn't have any trouble staying interested while at the park, it may be fun to create a scavenger hunt for them to play with during the wildlife tours.
