Since the release of his breakout single “ Ginseng Strip 2002 ” almost a decade ago, Swedish artist Yung Lean has fought to be treated as more than a gimmick. Though the song’s dreamy instrumentals signaled that it wasn’t just comedy rap, Lean was unquestionably imitating his favorite American rappers, dropping profane bars about sex acts and drug trips swaddled in an ironic vaporwave aesthetic. But as much as the record seemed tongue-in-cheek, there was always an obscured sincerity at the core, perhaps exemplified by Lean’s stage moniker: On the one hand, “Yung Lean” is something of a joke about carbon-copy rap names, but it’s also a legitimate play on his government name, Jonathan Leandoer.

Stardust is the next step in Lean’s shedding the mantle of wannabe rapper and fully embracing a more comfortable role as a pop experimentalist. After blowing up stateside, his early work suggested an attempt at a more mainstream rap career. He scored a feature from Travis Scott and a cameo on a Gucci Mane mixtape, but his flow and voice were still developing, and his attempts at straight-up rap felt awkward and out of place. Like many who experience sudden onset virality, he had to learn how to be a musician, working out his creative and personal growing pains in the public eye. Fame in America came with easy access to drugs, and Lean’s early success was marked by a series of tragedies , including the death of his manager, Hippos in Tanks founder Barron Machat. Lean opens up about his time in rehab and inpatient facilities in the documentary Yung Lean: In My Head , and it’s evident that he’s worked to find the clarity and strength now mirrored in his music. On Stardust , he exudes newfound confidence, but he’s also learned to make the flawed vulnerability of his voice work in his favor.

Lean’s voice has often been unfairly described as inaccessible or grating. But the very dissonance of his delivery and persona explains his appeal: the emotionality of the sad boy aesthetic juxtaposed against material flexes, a frequently imperfect voice over ornate and beautiful beats. On the outright ballad “Waterfall,” he stretches into a yearning falsetto, while on “Lips,” his voice withdraws into a more intimate mumble. His direct rapping now has a considerably more developed sense of cadence, like on “Nobody else,” where he flips effortlessly between a vocal-fried sing-song delivery and a more clipped flow. Set against the glistening voices of his Drain Gang associates Bladee and Ecco2k on “SummerTime Blood,” Lean’s tone is rougher and more down to earth, whereas his collaborators tilt toward the angelic. On “Starz2TheRainbow,” featuring Thaiboy Digital , several layers of overdubs circle and collide with one another, transforming Lean into an erratic choir.

Though promoted somewhat modestly as a mixtape, Stardust contains the most high-profile collaborations of Lean’s career. Alongside FKA twigs on album opener “Bliss,” Lean approaches post-punk, channeling New Order with guitar tones and a drum machine. Lean is a hopeless romantic, but twigs gives the song an outright sensuality, making it less a feature and more a duet where the two artists circle each other in a heated frenzy. On “Lips,” Skrillex lays down a smooth instrumental somewhere between UK speed garage and jazzy lounge piano, a leftfield sound for the EDM monolith and Yung Lean alike. The palette Skrillex employs on “SummerTime Blood” recalls “Where Are Ü Now,” but Yung Lean’s voice could not be more different from the spick-and-span choirboy vocals of Justin Bieber . If you took a time machine back to 2013 and told a music writer that the face of brostep and that weird Swedish kid who raps about AriZona Iced Tea would work together, they’d probably laugh you back to the future. In 2022, the union sounds natural.

The appearance of Salem ’s Jack Donoghue on “All the things” is less surprising. Witch house influenced and ran parallel with American cloud rap from groups like Raider Klan, TeamSESH, and Green Ova, who laid the groundwork for the sound of Yung Lean’s Sad Boys production collective. A woozy trap ballad that turns into a stomping rave banger midway through, “All the things” retrofits the chorus from “All the Things She Said,” the signature hit from queerbaiting Russian duo t.A.T.u. The infamous trance-pop duo is, in many ways, a symbol of the kind of career Yung Lean could have had: an imported one-hit wonder mainly remembered for their lost-in-translation take on American pop. The t.A.T.u. reference almost knowingly places Lean in a lineage of global pop, but his work stands apart as a genuine melange of international influences that’s found an organic audience across borders rather than a blatantly commercial product.

Every musician is inevitably shaped by their origins, but Lean’s music has never been regionally specific, and he’s always performed in English. Stardust acts as a bridge between two worlds, uniting English-language pop stars with a long tradition of Swedish hip-hop known as “Svensk rap,” which conforms much more squarely to traditional rap beats than Lean does and is generally performed in Swedish. “Paradise Lost” features fellow Swedish singer Ant Wan, whose music reflects his mixed heritage as a Swede of Assyrian descent, blending reggaeton, Afrobeats, drill, and R&B with a bilingual flow. That Lean’s music is distinctly Swedish yet more popular than ever indicates pop’s global turn; Ant Wan’s sound isn’t too far off from a multilingual icon like Bad Bunny .

Though Lean first gained exposure through mimicry, he’s found his own voice, and a clear confidence in it, by abandoning imitation as a form of flattery. Rather than emulating Travis Scott or Drake, he’s found a niche more like that of FKA twigs, a pop provocateur and distinctive visual stylist who glides seamlessly between the mainstream and the esoteric. Memes still contribute to his success, with “Ginseng Strip 2002” recently worming back into the public consciousness as a TikTok phenomenon, but Lean has moved beyond the limits of genre and easy gimmicks. Stardust shows his potential for invention.

Review: ‘Stardust’ sees Yung Lean strip rap back to its most guttural

The Swedish rapper’s latest mixtape packs a star-studded slew of features who take turns stabbing away at the triteness of rap’s current formulaity.

Yung Lean’s newest mixtape, “Stardust,” revives cloud rap by embracing its haziest features: its mumbled murkiness, vaporwave production and shape-shifting sonic grammar. Like a vape’s discarded smoke, “Stardust” soars in its strange configuration before fizzling out into nothingness, leaving listeners with the lingering desire to partake in the bygone enchantment again and again.

Kicking off with “Bliss,” a track that pairs the young Swedish rapper with FKA twigs, Lean’s newest album embraces a funky flow from the get-go. The music video that accompanies the mixtape’s opening track, one that sees the aforementioned artists immersed in a Lynchian joyride across suburbia, is as eye-catching as the song is engrossing to the ear. With FKA twigs and Yung Lean re-modulating the song’s catchy chorus of “Bliss on bliss on bliss on”  — ping-ponging it through their contrasted voices; twigs’ diaphanous, Lean’s gravely — “Bliss” takes on an air of unpredictability that keeps the song lively and foreshadows a mixtape full of exciting rearticulations of the rap genre.

“Trip,” the next track on the mixtape strikes back against the airy funk of “Bliss.” Featuring producers Woesum and Art Dealer, who slap the song with a strong bass, “Trip” sees Yung Lean indulging in the braggadocious lyricism often associated with popular rap songs. As he raps about a girl that smells “like peppermint” and boasts about his swagger (“Let me change your life / Southside, motorcycles in the summer, leather jacket life”) Lean creates a sonic portal meant to allow listeners to entertain their own ideas about reveling in hedonism.

This epicurean zeal rings through in tracks like “Gold” and “SummerTime Blood,” where Yung Lean raps about being an icon and his “all-gold wardrobe.” Lean’s assumption of the persona of an egocentric rapper is so histrionic it evades otherwise-warranted criticism by transforming his entire musical act into an exercise in elaborate theatrics.

For all his incomprehensible bars and unintelligent brags, there’s a brain behind Yung Lean. He understands the identity of the contemporary rapper so well that he is able to cloak himself in their ridiculous traits while simultaneously subverting them, something he accomplishes through such simple feats as melancholically rapping over upbeat productions. This is the case with “Lips,” in which he raps about lovelorness over a slowed drum n’ bass beat. This move recalls the brilliance of Morrissey’s penning melodramatic poetry to croon atop jaunty rock strumming as part of The Smiths (that is, before he outed himself as a right-wing nationalist). But Yung Lean best exemplifies his finesse when it comes to reinventing rap through transgressive attempts at restarting the genre, such as bringing in off-kilter features such as Skrillex to assist him in laying the foundational bricks for what’s to come in the world of rap.

Skrillex died to the world when we collectively moved past the non-culture that defined the early 2010s. But, armed with too much courage, Yung Lean’s decision to feature the dubstep pioneer — and force him to step out of the same noisy wheelhouse he’s inhabited since 2010’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” — demonstrates how once-pronounced dated artists can still use the expertise that made them famous to re-interpret today’s sonic language.

In looking to the past, Yung Lean is laying the foundation for the future. Perhaps this makes sense given Yung Lean’s geographical distance from the United States, the cultural capital that defined the rhythms of the rap movement he would soon immerse himself in after leaving his short-lived, albeit first-rate, punk band.

At the turn of the ’10s, SoundCloud sent a million musical notes out into the world, dislodging and revamping strict musical formats. The pudgy Swede known as Yung Lean spit back refractions of rap in gargles of garbled grammar upon being enveloped in the cloud rap scene that would quickly burst before his rise to fame and the world’s shift to mumble rap. Yung Lean’s music is more often funny than profound, his accent often making his verses come off as nonsensical. But in seemingly dragging the English language to its most Neanderthal, its most primeval, he seems to be reframing rap as the guttural expression of a soul searching for words.

Australian Tour January 2023

yung lean tour stardust

Astral People and Handsome Tours are thrilled to present… Yung Lean

As part of his massive festival return down under, Yung Lean will be stopping off at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre and Melbourne’s Forum for two not-to-be-missed headline shows.

As a project birthed from the early days of digicore and the Soundcloud Era, Yung Lean has been leading a new wave of hip hop since 2013. A fusion of disparate influences from 50 Cent, Young Thug and Chief Keef, his sound is one of early internet aesthetics, late 90s southern rap rolled together with a punk mindset.

After emerging to the music scene in 2013 with his now viral sensation ‘Ginseng Strip 2002’, Yung Lean has made a name for himself as a prominent figure in the early cloud rap genre. The track’s recent revival on TikTok has propelled him into icon status, with the song reaching close to 200 million streams to date.

The release of Yung Lean’s third studio album helped to only further assert himself as a serious player in the realms of left field rap. The album received high acclaim for his emotive lyrics and pop-punk inspired bridges, winning him a Swedish Grammy in 2018 for Hip-Hop Album of The Year.

His 6th studio album ‘Stardust’ released in 2022 saw his first drop since 2020. Yung Lean’s experimentations on this album highlight a matured approach to lyric writing. The album takes new ventures within the rap genre, featuring ambitious collaborations with big industry names such as Skrillex, FKA Twigs, Ant Wan and Thaiboy Digital.

In a live setting Yung Lean does not fail to impress audiences; combining fashion, art, videos and music for his live performances. Over the years he has captivated audiences with his high energy sets, featuring on some massive festival lineups such as Rolling Loud and Reading Festival.

Returning this January for his third Australian tour, don’t miss out on the one and only Yung Lean.

Getting here

Covid-safe information, frequently asked questions, the return of sweden’s pioneering hip-hop star.

Swedish hip-hop phenomenon Yung Lean returns to Australia for his debut performance at Vivid LIVE, presented by Sydney legend and underground prophet 3NDLES5.

From viral internet star to pioneering cloud rapper and pop experimentalist, the Swedish rapper, producer and singer-songwriter Yung Lean has captured the sound and spirit of an era.

He first came to attention – and notoriety – in 2013 with his breakout track “Ginseng Strip 2002”, a viral smash that blew up on YouTube. While critics suspected the track to be a novelty hit, Yung Lean not only endured, he thrived. As an innovator in the world of SoundCloud rap, he released a string of acclaimed albums and mixtapes – including  Unknown Memory  (2014) and  Warlord , (2016), and  Stranger (2017) – that defined a buzzy new wave of dissociative hip-hop.

Yung Lean expanded his dream-trap sound on 2020’s  Starz , and leaned into pop experimentalism on 2022’s mixtape  Stardust , which featured ambitious takes on rap, post-punk and electro, and featured high-profile collaborations with fka twigs (“Bliss”) and Skrillex (“SummerTime Blood”). Later that year, “Ginseng Strip 2002” experienced a massive viral resurgence on TikTok, captivating a whole new generation of kids.

Don’t miss one of the most creative young artists in the game.

Channelling the chaos and beauty of the deep, dank Sydney underground, 3NDLES5 is the off-kilter electronic music project from Mitch Tolman, a former member of local post-punk legends Low Life. In 2023, 3NDLES5 curated the Posh isolation event for Vivid LIVE.

  10. Review: 'Stardust' sees Yung Lean strip rap back to its most guttural

Yung Lean's newest mixtape, "Stardust," revives cloud rap by embracing its haziest features: its mumbled murkiness, vaporwave production and shape-shifting sonic grammar. Like a vape's discarded smoke, "Stardust" soars in its strange configuration before fizzling out into nothingness, leaving listeners with the lingering desire to partake in the bygone enchantment again and again.

  15. Stardust by Yung Lean (Mixtape, Cloud Rap): Reviews, Ratings, Credits

Stardust has some of Yung Lean's most thrilling tracks to date. "Bliss" and "Trip" show enormous promise in Lean's ability to adapt to the 2020's zany, post-genre musical landscape. The baritone electric guitar and drums on "Bliss" are visceral and immediate, with wacky sound effects and dire verses. I also love the way Lean raps on "Trip ...

  17. [FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Yung Lean

On first listen I was like... wtf is this bruh. And I've always enjoyed Lean's work. But I decided to give it a second spin and overall it's decent. I really hate the singing on some of the early songs, especially on Starz2theRainbow. And some of the later songs I really love, SummerTime Blood in particular.
