Disney Theatrical Productions Announces North American Tour for ‘AIDA’. Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher) proudly announces the launch of a new North American tour of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Tony®-winning Broadway smash Aida , following the premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse, February 4 – March 7, 2021.

A passionate and timeless story for today’s audiences, Aida is the compelling tale of star-crossed lovers belonging to feuding nations, torn between their conflicted loyalties to their countries and to each other. With its stirring contemporary score and its powerful love story, Aida reveals that we have the power to change history, but only when we make brave choices and embrace our destiny.

The show’s producer Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions said,  “Schele Williams, David Henry Hwang and the team have cracked the show open in new ways to bring the story into today’s world while honoring what fans have cherished for 20 years: rich characters, gorgeous designs and those extraordinary songs.”

“ Aida is in my DNA in ways I had never imagined until I began the journey for this production,” said Schele Williams. “I have a rich history with the show that I am very proud of, but when I recently made some discoveries about the history of its time period, the show broke open for me. It truly is the butterfly effect; subtle shifts have taken a story I love and turned it into an adventure I can’t wait for audiences to discover. David Henry Hwang has crafted a book that truly shapes this journey and Elton John and Tim Rice’s score is the glorious foundation we have built upon. I am thrilled to be in collaboration with David Henry Hwang, Camille Brown, Jason Michael Webb, Bob Crowley, Natasha Katz, Michael McElroy, Zane Mark, Jim Abbott and the Sirs, Tim Rice and Elton John .  All extraordinary storytellers unified in vision to revive a musical that is deeply meaningful to all of us.”

The production will play Charlotte, Chicago, Fort Worth, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., among other cities to be announced. The winner of four Tony ® Awards returns to the stages of North America! With a Grammy ®  and Tony Award-winning score by the legendary Elton John and Tim Rice and a revised book by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, the hit Broadway musical AIDA returns to the stage in a thrilling new production. The producers of THE LION KING and FROZEN have reunited the original Tony Award-winning design team of Bob Crowley (scenery and costumes) and Natasha Katz (lighting) to reinterpret their designs in the retelling of this passionate and timeless story for today’s audiences.

Directed by Schele Williams, choreographed by Camille A. What you need to know about Verdi's Aida

CHICAGO (2/8/24) — Torn between love and loyalty, a captive princess must choose between her patriotic duty and her love for an enemy hero in Giuseppe Verdi’s classic Aida , on stage at Lyric Opera of Chicago from March 9 to April 7, 2024. Music Director Enrique Mazzola adds the 100th title to his vast operatic repertoire with his very first performances of Aida . The production also marks the final opera of Anthony Freud’s 13-year tenure as Lyric’s General Director, President & CEO. Spirited dance sequences by renowned choreographer Jessica Lang draw audiences even further into the mythic world created by director Francesca Zambello for this new-to-Chicago production.

Forbidden love in a time of war. Aida, a young enslaved woman, harbors secret feelings for the military hero Radamès, who has conquered her people. Unbeknownst to her captors, she is also a princess and the daughter of their sworn enemy, Amanasro. As the occupying King’s own daughter Amneris desperately seeks the affections of Radamès for herself, Aida must make an impossible choice. One of the most beloved masterpieces in all of opera, Aida features such famous arias as “Celeste Aida,” “Ritorna vincitor,” and “O patria mia,” along with intimate duets, extended dance sequences, and the grand Triumphal Scene, during which 200 artists will be on stage and in the orchestra pit. Aida is a timeless story of hard-won trust, unexpected betrayal, bitter resolve, poignant remorse, and heart-wrenching vulnerability.

More musical milestones in a “season of firsts.” Lyric's Music Director Enrique Mazzola is known as one of the world’s leading interpreters of the works of Verdi, and with this production he conducts Verdi’s epic Aida for the very first time in his captivating career. Previously at Lyric he has conducted the composer’s Luisa Miller , Macbeth , Ernani , and Don Carlos . Aida also marks the 100th opera in Mazzola’s vast repertoire of operas he has conducted. The 2023/24 Season has been a “ season of firsts ” for the conductor; earlier in the season he led performances of The Flying Dutchman , his first Wagner opera at Lyric, and Terence Blanchard’s Champion , his first contemporary opera at Lyric. In a final “first” of the 2023/24 Season, Mazzola will conduct Mozart’s Requiem , his first Mozart for Lyric audiences.

For the final two performances on April 4 and 7, Aida will be conducted by Francesco Milioti , a valued member of Lyric’s music staff for the past ten seasons who also serves as Music Director for OPERA San Antonio and The Florentine Opera in Milwaukee.

A production anchored by three dynamic voices. Aida reunites the accomplished Verdian singers Michelle Bradley and Russell Thomas , who recently triumphed as another of opera’s doomed couples in Puccini’s Tosca in Lyric’s 2021/22 Season, in the roles of Aida and Radamès. Bradley has performed the role of Aida across the globe, including at the Metropolitan Opera. Following a familiar path of great Verdi sopranos, Bradley first performed the role of the Priestess in Aida at the Met in 2017 before taking on the title role there in 2022. Thomas has been a Lyric favorite since his debut in the 2016/17 Season as Pollione in Bellini’s Norma , and adds the role of Radamès to his Verdi repertoire at Lyric, which includes spellbinding performances as Manrico in Il trovatore in the 2018/19 Season and in the title role in Ernani in the 2022/23 Season. The third side of Aida ’s love triangle is Jamie Barton as Amneris, her seventh role at Lyric and her first since her mesmerizing portrayal of Azucena (opposite Thomas) in Verdi’s Il trovatore in the 2018/19 Season. Barton is the winner of many prestigious prizes, including the Richard Tucker Award, the Met’s Beverly Sills Artist Award, and the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

A charismatic cast of performers. Fresh off his critically acclaimed portrayal of Emile Griffith in Lyric’s Champion earlier this season, Reginald Smith Jr. sings the role of Aida’s father, Amanasro. Önay Köse , a former ensemble member of Berlin’s famed Komische Oper, makes his Lyric debut as Ramfis, the High Priest who advises Radamès. Members of the Ensemble of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, Lyric’s artist-development program, appear in key roles in Aida : Wm. Clay Thompson is the King, Kathryn Henry is the Priestess, and Alejandro Luévanos is the Messenger.

A director’s daring vision. Internationally renowned director Francesca Zambello returns for her tenth time at Lyric. Known for her visual acumen, focused character work, and compelling storytelling, Zambello has directed the recent Lyric productions of West Side Story in the 2018/2019 and 2022/23 Seasons and Florencia en el Amazonas in the 2021/22 Season. She also previously teamed with Mazzola for Verdi’s Luisa Miller in the 2019/20 Season. Her production of Aida carefully balances the grand scale of its military scenes with the startling intimacy of its love story.

Alluring visual artistry. The production’s striking original concept design is by artistic designer RETNA , a celebrated street artist based in Los Angeles whose work uses calligraphy, hieroglyphics, and bold colors to evoke a mythic past with a contemporary edge. RETNA’s mural work can be seen locally in Chicago on the south wall of 33 East Congress, part of the Wabash Arts Corridor, and his diverse commercial projects include the cover of Justin Bieber’s Purpose album and collaborations with Nike and Louis Vuitton. RETNA makes his Lyric debut with this production.

Aida features the stagecraft of set designer Michael Yeargan , whose work has been a mainstay at Lyric since his debut in the 1991/92 Season; costume designer Anita Yavich , a veteran of many Broadway and off-Broadway productions who recently designed the costumes for Opera Australia's Ring Cycle, in her Lyric debut; and lighting designer Mark McCullough , who has collaborated with Zambello on seven previous productions at Lyric.

Incredible feats of dance and voice. Acclaimed choreographer Jessica Lang , in her Lyric debut, brings her unique contemporary dance sensibility to Aida , creating stunning choreography for some of the opera's most spectacular scenes. Since 1999, Lang has created more than 100 original works for dance companies worldwide, including American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Joffrey Ballet, and her own company Jessica Lang Dance, which she led from 2011 to 2019. The Lyric Opera Chorus, whose 100 voices power some of the opera's most magnificent musical moments, is led by chorus director Michael Black .

A beloved masterpiece returns to Chicago. For the first time in more than a decade, Aida ’s timeless tale of duty versus desire is on spectacular display at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Under the impeccable musical leadership of Enrique Mazzola and the bold direction of Francesca Zambello, audiences will be deeply moved by Verdi's towering drama of passionate love, thundering vengeance, and heartbreaking sacrifice.

• 10 chances to see Aida : March 9; matinees on March 13 and 17; March 20, 23, 26, and 29; April 1; and matinees on April 4 and 7.
• The performances on March 9 through April 1 are conducted by Enrique Mazzola; the April 4 and 7 performances are led by Francesco Milioto.
• Performed in Italian, with easy-to-follow English translations projected above the stage.
• A total running time of 3 hours, including one intermission.
• The photo exhibit concrete, rose. by acclaimed Chicago photographer Patric McCoy has been extended by popular demand. The exhibit, located in the Grand Foyer and on the mezzanine level of Lyric Opera House, will be open and free to the public between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday from March 12 to April 5; the exhibit will be open to ticketholders 90 minutes prior to all performances of Aida .
• One hour before each performance, Colin Ure will lead a pre-opera talk on the composition history and social context of Aida .

AIDA Opens Bookings for 2025-26 World Cruise

AIDA Cruises has officially opened bookings for the 2025-26 World Cruise sailing aboard the AIDAdiva from November 10, 2025, to March 18, 2026.

The 128-day adventure will be the longest voyage around the world in the company’s history with 53 ports of call. Departing from Hamburg, the world tour will take guests to four continents and 28 countries. The east and west coasts of the USA and Japan will be on the itinerary for the first time on an AIDA World Cruise. Additionally, New Year’s Eve will be celebrated in Hawaii.

Other highlights include calls in New York and a transit of the Panama Canal.

The AIDAdiva will also make its debut in San Francisco, passing the Golden Gate Bridge on her way into port. En route to Singapore, the ship will head for the beaches of Hawaii, where guests will spend New Year’s Eve in Honolulu.

In the last third of the voyage, travelers will journey from Singapore to destinations in the Indian Ocean, including a new port of call in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. After exploring Mumbai, the voyage continues through the Arabian Sea and Jordan. Guests will visit Alexandria, Egypt, followed by an exploration of the Mediterranean with stops in Malta and Lisbon.

The 2008-built AIDAbella cruises ship is the second Sphinx-class AIDA liner, with sisterhips AIDAluna and AIDAdiva .

The vessel (IMO number 9362542) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247229700) and registered in Genova .

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI ) targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 (as "Deutsche Seereederei") and in 2000 was acquired by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (shipowner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

The 2500-passenger ship AIDAbella was originally named "MS Seetours" and is currently managed by Costa Crociere and operated by AIDA Kreutzfahrten.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Decks and Cabins

AIDAbella staterooms (1025 total, in 18 grades) include 16 Suites, 480 Balconies, 186 Oceanviews, and 359 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Aft-Facing Deluxe Suites (sized 400-470 ft2 / 37-44 m2, with private sundecks/wraparound terraces sized 270-540 ft2 / 25-50 m2).

The boat has 13 decks , of which 11 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

AIDAbella restaurants are open seating. Both of the buffets give passengers the chance to try food from several countries. Good wines are available to try. The Markt buffet Restaurant is located on deck 9. It is self-service and has a diverse and rich buffet. There are no strict dress codes or fixed dining times. Basic beverages, including house wines and beer, are free of charge at the buffet restaurants. In addition, several beverage packages are available to buy at reduced rates. A coffee bar is a calm place where you can try good coffee, meet a lot of new people, read your newspaper or magazine and have a good time.

AIDAbella is the 5th liner of AIDA Kreutzfahrten. Ship's name was chosen via an online competition. In terms of construction and size, the vessel matches the sistership AIDAdiva , consisting of 55 steel blocks (450 tons each). The hull itself weighed 25000 tons. Ship's four diesel engines provide 50,000 hp (37,3 MW).

Ship's Godmother was Eva Padbergwas (German fashion model). The name "Bella" was chosen after a competition. The vessel was christened on April 23, 2008, in Rostock-Warnemunde, Germany. Approximately 1400 guests attended the naming ceremony which included scenes from the musical "Avalon" performed by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, as well as a specially written song performed by Volkan Baydar (from the Orange-Blue pop duo).

AIDA Bella ship has a biking station and carries its own fleet of complimentary bicycles used by passengers on shore excursions in ports of call. A significant amount of space inside the ship is devoted to sports. Fun fact is that the liner has a nude sunbathing area (located top-deck / towards the rear). Midship is positioned the circular and glass-walled Theatrium (also used as nightclub).

Onboard language is German, as the majority of AIDA cruise passengers are Germans and German-speaking Europeans (Austrians, Swiss). AIDA customers are young and active, so older Germans prefer more traditional brands on the German-speaking market.

AIDA Bella was scheduled for deployment to Asia (in spring 2017) for roundtrips from China on a year-round basis with departures from homeport  Shanghai . However, in late September 2016, the company changed these plans and instead the ship will stay in the Western Mediterranean - due to the region's "strong demand". Starting May 2017, AIDAbella's itinerary program in Europe includes 7-day  Barcelona  and  Palma de Mallorca  round-trips. There are also new 10- and 11-day (Adriatic Sea) itineraries between Palma and  Venice  to port destinations in Italy, Malta, Greece and Croatia.

Due to 2 months earlier launch of AIDAperla , passengers booked on AIDAbella (itineraries between June 30 - August 26, 2017) were offered a chance to re-book to AIDAperla.

Musical comedy group Fascinating Aïda are to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a new tour, running between September and November 2023 , followed by three nights at the London Palladium in February 2024 .

The promoters say: "In 1983 there was no-one else like them and, 40 years on, there still isn't. Celebrating 40 years on the road in 2023, Dillie Keane , Adèle Anderson and Liza Pulman , Britain's raciest and sassiest cabaret trio are bringing their brand-new show to the London Pallidum for three nights only in February 2024 . And touring from September 2023 !

" Fascinating Aïda have racked up millions of internet followers, performed in the world's most prestigious venues and been showered with awards and plaudits since they sashayed onto the scene back in 1983 .

"Uniquely charming, with diamond-sharp satire, filthy, hilarious, belligerent, political, poignant and outrageous, this indomitable trio are still the mistresses of their craft."

Talking about the content, they add: "Marking this astonishing 40-year milestone, this new show will feature much-loved favourites and some wicked new songs. If you've been delighted by Dogging , sung Cheap Flights to the Ryanair cabin crew or sobbed into your hanky with Look Mummy, No Hands , don't miss the chance to celebrate with these unstoppable performers in their glorious prime!"

Musical director, composer and pianist Michael Roulston will, once again, join Dillie, Liza and Adèle on stage and the show will be directed by Paul Foster .

Fascinating Aida: The 40th Anniversary Tour

Review of the enduring comedy-cabaret stars' latest show

After 40 years, fans know what to expect from a Fascinating Aida gig by now: impeccably intricate songwriting, slick, elegant performance and lyrics that undermine that superficially genteel cabaret aesthetic with smut, mordant observations on life and embittered political barbs. All are present and ​correct in this celebratory mix of greatest hits and new material.

At 71, indefatigable founder Dillie Keane deserves national treasure status for four unflagging decades of telling it like it is, while maintaining the grouchy hangdog demeanour that trying to entertain hoi polloi like us really isn’t worth the effort.

Her style contrasts with the perkiness of Liza Pulman – the baby of the group in her mid-50s (and whose powerful soprano is often the musical engine room) – and Adele Anderson’s more waggish demeanour. On keys when Keane isn’t, Michael Roulston is the archetypal cabaret posho, full of mannered bonhomie.

‘Let’s get it over with,’ Keane sighs as she introduces ’a medley of our greatest hit’, Cheap Flights. The bitingly grumpy potshot at being taken in by Ryanair in the style of an Irish folk song made the trio an internet sensation a dozen years ago. But if you think 6million YouTube views translates into a young audience, you’d be mistaken – the auditorium at Kingston was an ocean of grey.

The opener, combining their tracks We’re Next and We’re Not Done Yet surely spoke to that crowd, a darkly witty acceptance of death with laughing its face and saying sorry/not sorry to younger generations for having screwed everything up for them. Enemy Of Beauty, giving reasons to resist the lure of plastic surgery, is also a robust celebration of self-acceptance.

The bitter-sweet tone of Widows, about the social ostracisation of the recently bereaved, is even more poignant if you knew Keane lost her partner of 22 years last summer, although she never mentions it. An oblique reference introducing an even more plaintive song about packing up a house later in the show is as close to direct soul-baring as she gets. Though The Blues Got A Skeleton Key is another earnestly sad song.

Generally, the trio tend to pour their scorn outward, from the arcane trivia immigrants are supposed to know for their citizenship test to Sally Rooney novels to the venal Tories.

Britain’s political shitshow is a constant. The Bulgarian ditties section allows for ultra-topical verses, from King Charles’s birthday to David Cameron’s comeback to Esther McVey being appointed ‘minister for common sense’. They are saying what we are all thinking, in the most direct of ways, but the immediacy of the reaction is potent.

Elsewhere, the familiarity of their greatest hits is the selling point, including the playfully filthy Dogging; Kangaroo, imagining which creature they wish to be reincarnated as; and Lieder, the carefully choreographed Weimar cabaret pastiche that displays a physical humour that belies the older members’ ages.

Other musical influences range from Eric Idle to Kraftwerk – in a song about artificial intelligence – to Gilbert and Sullivan, with Sir Arthur kindly donating a melody to their track A Tory MP, listing all the despicable ingredients that go into such a monster.

Sometimes their references can be old hat, from Dignitas assisted suicide to Morrissey being the singer of miserable tunes. The track Down With The Kids leans into that, with cringey slang and awkward hip-hop moves in an attempt to prove they have a contemporary relevance – but the jury’s out as to whether the self-parody quite comes off or not.

But it’s always executed so artfully, with tricksy rhymes a special delight, from ‘sleet falls’ to ‘meatballs’ or ‘abject failures" with ‘Sibelius’ both in the same song about Scandi-noir thrillers.

So if some of their satirical edge seems blunted, Fascinating Aida have few rivals in merging apparently refined cabaret with comedy sensibilities. And The 40th Anniversary Tour its share of funny lines and an undeniable commitment to being entertaining, whatever it takes. Apart from Keane ever breaking into a smile, of course.

Review: FASCINATING AIDA: 40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW, London Palladium

The UK can’t claim too many music groups with the impressive longevity or sheer depravity of Fascinating Aïda.

Best known for Youtube hit “Cheap Flights” and the deliciously unsubtle “Dogging”, this tour has more than enough jolly singalongs to go along with those fan favourites. The current lineup of Dillie Keane , Adèle Anderson and Liza Pulman (here accompanied by Michael Roulston ) have been together for around twenty years (barring a short spell when Sarah- Louise Young filled Pulman’s shoes).

Their confidence and synergy shines through whether they are gathered around a piano, throwing shapes around the stage to hip hop-inspired “Down With The Kids” or robot-dancing as they bemoan modern technology in the Kraftwerkesque “AI”.

Four decades on, their macabre humour echoes that of Tom Lehrer ; while the Sixties satirist gleefully considered the prospect of poisoning pigeons in the park , Keane and company sing about persuading their frail parent to jump on a plane to Dignitas (“Mother, Dear Mother”), the downsides of inviting the recently bereaved to social events (“Widow”) and - through near-immobile faces - the extremes some go to to stay looking young (“The Enemy Of Beauty”). 

It’s hard to think of any musical group which revels so much in the zeitgeist. They merrily rip up the rule book on touring in the third age: acts like the Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and Elton John lean heavily on hits from their first couple of decades, but Fascinating Aïda largely abandon their early back catalogue to focus on ever-new ways to expose and ridicule the vagaries of modern society, be it the hoary chestnut of citizenship tests or ripped-from-the-headlines comments on Saltburn and Barbie’s Oscar nominations. Their latest Bulgarian song cycle (a riff on The Mikado ’s Little List) takes aim at the post office scandal, Michelle Mone, David Cameron ’s peerage and (perhaps with a nod to Lehrer’s “ Pollution ”) the effect of Brexit laws on water quality.

Like Lehrer, they use jaunty tunes to underscore political messages that make Billy Bragg look like Michael McIntyre . These ladies don’t sit on the fence: one song begins with the lines “If you want to do something good today/Assassinate Trump/He makes a big target/Out there on the stump”. Meanwhile, the operatic “ A Tory MP ” rattles through a recipe of sorts for a Conservative politician and sums it up memorably with the final refrain of “c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt c*nt” before a picture of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is pulled from a mixing bowl.

There are some softer songs too: the soulful “Old Home” hits hard with its tale of leaving a beloved house behind. In general, though, Fascinating Aïda are not for the faint of heart or the easily offended; their show in Buxton saw someone storm off from the front row mid-song. For those who enjoy being joyfully outraged and politically engaged, this show is an utter treat.

Fascinating Aïda continue at London Palladium until 6 February and then are on tour around the UK .
