The Beatles look out of the Magical Mystery Tour coach skylight, on location in England in September 1967. Apple Films Ltd/Channel Thirteen hide caption

The Beatles look out of the Magical Mystery Tour coach skylight, on location in England in September 1967.

On Friday night on PBS, Great Performances presents a documentary about the making of a Beatles TV special from 1967 — Magical Mystery Tour — then shows a restored version of that special . Magical Mystery Tour has the music from the U.S. album of the same name, but it's not the album. It's a musical comedy fantasy about the Beatles and a busload of tourists taking a trip to unknown destinations.

It was written and produced in 1967, which was an incredibly fertile period for the Beatles. "Strawberry Fields Forever" came out that year, as well as "Penny Lane" and the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. That was followed, a month later, by the live TV premiere of "All You Need is Love," broadcast globally. The Beatles, it seemed, could do no wrong. And then they did Magical Mystery Tour, which was televised by the BBC the day after Christmas — on Boxing Day — as a holiday special. A quarter of the British population watched it — and many of those hated it.

Back then, the 53-minute program was filmed in color but wasn't broadcast that way. Imagine the Sgt. Pepper cover in black and white, and you can imagine how much was lost in the translation. Reception to the TV special was so poor that the show wasn't even picked up in the United States — just the soundtrack. Eventually, the special was syndicated to some local TV stations and toured the college film circuit along with Reefer Madness. That's when I first saw it. But on a national level, Magical Mystery Tour has never been televised in the United States — until now.

On Friday — as always, check local listings — Magical Mystery Tour will be preceded by the new one-hour companion documentary , Magical Mystery Tour Revisited. This may be the first case on record in which a documentary about a film is longer than the film itself — but it's worth it.

The documentary, produced by Jonathan Clyde of Apple Films and directed by Francis Hanly, is wonderfully thorough. It explains how the idea for Magical Mystery Tour came about, and how Paul McCartney originally drew the concept as a pie chart — then shows the chart. It covers the origins of each number written specifically for the show, from the title song and "The Fool on the Hill" to "I Am the Walrus" and "Your Mother Should Know." It presents lots of outtakes and new interviews with McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam and Peter Fonda. It also includes a vintage interview with George Harrison, whose assessment of the 1967 TV special is as unfiltered as the program itself.

It's a fine documentary — better, to be honest, than Magical Mystery Tour itself. But Magical Mystery Tour is so much fun to watch if you're a Beatles fan, that it serves up one joy after another. John Lennon serving shovels of spaghetti as a waiter in a dream sequence. John and George in a strip club, watching the house band singing a song called "Death Cab for Cutie" — which, incidentally, inspired the name of a much more recent rock band. And the closing production number, "Your Mother Should Know," which has the Beatles in white suits, dancing in unison down a giant staircase.

In addition to the PBS double feature, Magical Mystery Tour is also now available as a deluxe boxed set from Apple. It includes Blu-ray and DVD versions of the original special, a vastly shortened version of the documentary, and lots of extras, including outtakes and complete scenes that were cut out of the program before its 1967 premiere. These extras are every bit as entertaining as Magical Mystery Tour, and one segment is a minor revelation: singer-songwriter Ivor Cutler, seated at an ornate white organ in the middle of the English countryside, performing his composition "I'm Going in a Field." It must have been hypnotically bizarre then. It's hypnotically bizarre now .

It's no secret that I'm almost ridiculous in my enthusiasm for the Beatles. But for me, all this new Magical Mystery Tour material -- the restored TV special, the documentary, the boxed set — is like a perfectly timed holiday gift. The boxed set is expensive — but the Great Performances double feature is free. All you need is ... a TV set.

The Beatles, ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ – Film Review

Going into the last quarter of 1967, the Beatles couldn’t get any bigger. Their masterwork, ‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band ,’ pretty much changed the way pop music was made, sounded and consumed. They had transcended the rock ‘n’ roll ghetto, entering the final phase of a career that glided past pop music’s boundaries and into a wide-open realm of exploration and experimentation.

They were on top of the world, and nobody wanted, or could, tell them no. Which is how and why their third movie, ‘Magical Mystery Tour,’ came to be over two weeks in September of 1967. Conceived as a daylong travelogue, in which the Fab Four accompany a busload of family and friends to the sea, the 53-minute film was a kaleidoscopic-colored, and mostly improvised, trip into the overeager egos of the Beatles.

Each member gets his spotlight: John Lennon romping on the hillside during a musical interlude featuring ‘I Am the Walrus’; Paul McCartney (the driving force behind the project) ruminating on ‘The Fool on the Hill; George Harrison tripping out to ‘Blue Jay Way’; and Ringo Starr bickering with his aunt (played by an actress) for the duration of the tour.

But most of the movie is filled out by that tedious bus ride. Just to show you how desperate the filmmakers were for material, somebody plays an accordion and everyone else sings along. There's also bizarre sketches featuring the quartet dressed as magicians and a dreamlike love-story vignette that doesn’t include any of the Beatles.

‘Magical Mystery Tour’ originally aired on British television on Dec. 26, 1967, and bombed, proving that the Beatles were fallible after all. It’s easy to see why: The movie is a mess – incoherent, unfunny and an example of ego and authority running rampant and unchecked. It only comes to life during the musical numbers, especially the great ‘I Am the Walrus’ sequence, a music video before there was such a thing.

The restored DVD and Blu-ray includes a stellar soundtrack remix, ensuring that the movie’s watchable moments sound terrific. Extras include interviews with McCartney, Starr and some of the cast and crew, as well as commentary by McCartney, who readily admits that ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ isn’t one of the Beatles’ best moments. We couldn’t agree more.

Product description.

Based on a loose unscripted narrative, in the spirit of the experimental mood of the time, and directed by The Beatles themselves, the film became the vehicle to present six new songs - "Magical Mystery Tour," "The Fool on the Hill," "Flying," "I Am the Walrus," "Blue Jay Way" and "Your Mother Should Know." Now, 45 years on, the virtually forgotten film has been fully restored and is being presented properly for the first time.

The Long, Winding, and Weird Legacy of the Beatles’ Notorious ‘Let It Be’ Movie

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

Let It Be is back? Nobody thought this day would ever come. The Beatles ’ 1970 lost-lost documentary Let It Be has always been dismissed as the band’s tombstone. It’s a movie that people regard as a disaster but hardly anyone has actually seen, just like Magical Mystery Tour . Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Let It Be came out in May 1970, right when the Fabs were splitting up, and went down in history as their “break-up film.” All four refused to show up for the premiere. Apple has kept it officially unavailable for decades. It’s barely been seen in the past 50 years. Of all the Beatles’ artifacts, Let It Be seemed to be buried deepest.

But Get Back definitely changed the way people thought about this era and these sessions, revealing the joy and camaraderie. So will the world finally be ready to see Let It Be with a fresh perspective? How will it look now that we know so much more about the story?

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Let It Be begins in January 1969, when John, Paul, George, and Ringo bring in Lindsay-Hogg to film them in the studio. Over 21 days, he shoots 56 hours of footage. The Get Back sessions get nasty, with George quitting the band (offscreen). The Fabs argue. They sulk. They look miserable. At the end, they go up on top of the Apple building for their famed rooftop concert, playing live for the first time in years. (Until the cops come.) The footage is meant for a 30-minute TV special. But new manager Allen Klein, having just gotten his fingers in the Beatle pie, decides to hustle it into theaters as a cash-cow movie. Now titled Let It Be , it hits theaters at the worst possible moment— just a few weeks after Paul announces the break-up .

Even Peter Jackson was so traumatized by Let It Be he wasn’t sure about the idea of doing Get Back . “As a longtime Beatle fan, I really wasn’t looking forward to it,” he told Rolling Stone. “I thought, if what we’ve seen is the stuff they allowed people to see, what are the other 55 hours going to be? When I went to Apple, my feet were heavy. I thought, ‘I should be excited, but I just dread what I’m about to see.’”

The Beatles' 'Let It Be' Film Will Be Available for the First Time in Over 50 Years

Inside jimmy buffett's tribute concert: mccartney, margaritas, and one hell of a parrothead party, watch paul mccartney, the eagles perform 'let it be' at jimmy buffett tribute concert.

This scene horrified people at the time, before rock docs or reality TV existed, before anyone knew how a REAL rock-star fight sounded. Yet from a modern perspective, it’s ridiculously tame. As music producer Giles Martin said, “When you see this famous argument in the film, It’s like, ‘That’s it? That’s the thing?’” For a band like Aerosmith, this would count as friendly conversation. “I was working with Aerosmith producing their Vegas show, God bless them. Even arguing about their flights to Boston was worse than that!”

Let It Be didn’t come out until May 1970—14 months after it was filmed—so it’s hardly a documentary of a band breaking up. Right after the Get Back sessions, the Fabs made Abbey Road , not just their sunniest music but their most popular. Yet that’s how people still talk about this movie—the band divorcing on camera. “It was a very dark time not just for the Beatles themselves, but for their fans,” Peter Jackson said. “I can just imagine that if you were going to the cinema in May of 1970, and you just heard that the Beatles had broken up, then you’re obviously going to look at the movie through a particular filter. The timing of it—what was in people’s minds when they were looking at the movie, as much as the movie itself—I think that has led to it being known as the break-up film.”

Michael Lindsay-Hogg, now 84, has always valiantly defended his original Let It Be . “I always thought, for a variety of reasons which weren’t its fault, it was positioned badly in the world of rock & roll documentaries, and even Beatles lore,” he told Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt in 2021 . Ringo complained, “There was no joy in Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s documentary.” Lindsay-Hogg’s reply?  “Personally, I don’t care.”

Lindsay-Hogg was a director of the U.K. music TV show Ready Steady Go! , and he had a long history with the Beatles, directing their pioneering videos for “Hey Jude,” “Paperback Writer,” and Rain,” as well as Rolling Stones projects like Rock and Roll Circus . The famous “Hey Jude” clip was filmed at Twickenham Studios in London, with the band surrounded by 300 fans singing along. “They enjoyed that so much that the whole concept with the Get Back thing was that ‘we’ll do exactly the same thing,’” Peter Jackson said. “Basically the ‘Hey Jude’ promo but with 14 songs and broadcast live on TV.” But the lads soon got sick of this whole project. They moved on to Abbey Road , and the abandoned footage got turned into a movie.

Trump Privately Rages About His Sketch Artist, Courtroom Nap Reports

Come for the torture, stay for the poetry: this might be taylor swift's most personal album yet, pink files legal action against pharrell williams over musician's proposed p.inc. trademark, mandisa, contemporary christian star and 'american idol' contestant, dead at 47.

When Get Back dropped in November 2021, part of its rapturous reception was in the way it dispelled the bitch-and-shout bad vibes of Let It Be . Jackson went back to the 56 hours of footage, but used it to tell a whole new story, a 6-hour feast for fans, showing the band coming together to make timeless music in their hour of darkness. Get Back , in some ways, was presented as an antidote to Let It Be . So the time is right for this much-maligned, rarely-seen film to get a second look. Lindsay-Hogg, for one, is confident that after seeing Get Back , the audience will finally be ready for Let it Be . “It’s in everybody’s interest to put out  Let It Be  again after Peter’s because they’re totally different films,” he said. “They’re not competitors.” Now that both version of the story will exist, the world can finally see Let It Be with fresh eyes.

Forecast calls for rain: a tribute to the beatles in cleveland, focusing on ‘magical mystery tour,’ act will perform at playhouse square.

John Landes is quite familiar with the concept of straddling two worlds.

For more than three decades, the Philadelphia native singer-guitarist toured the world portraying John Lennon in Rain: A Tribute to The Beatles , which returns to Cleveland for a show April 19 at Playhouse Square’s KeyBank State Theatre .

In fact, the last time the outfit was in Northeast Ohio, the band members made their way over to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where they immersed themselves in the exhibition “The Beatles: Get Back to Let It Be,” celebrating Peter Jackson’s jaw-dropping docuseries.

“The exhibit was incredible,” said Landes, calling from California. “I kind of stood right in between rooms where I could look at the rooftop concert footage and look at the instruments that were being used and the clothes that were being worn, and then at the same time kind of peek over and see those are the drums, that’s John’s guitar and there’s Ringo’s red rain slicker that he was wearing.

“Just to have that kind of tangible, that physical presence there while you’re watching what otherwise for us Beatles fans is kind of like an almost magical peering into that history that we can’t quite touch, it was just breathtaking.”

John Landes portrays John Lennon during a performance of Rain: A Tribute to The Beatles. (Richard Lovrich)

Perhaps that’s why Rain has transitioned from its last tour’s recreation of the iconic rooftop concert to focusing on the group’s 1967 double ,“Magical Mystery Tour.”

Landes noted that Rain — which fuses historical footage and television commercials from the ’60s while the outfit plays note-for-note performances of all things John, Paul, George and Ringo — is having a blast performing songs such as “I Am the Walrus,” “Penny Lane,” “Strawberry Fields” and “Magical Mystery Tour.”

“These are all part of the soundtrack, so focusing on that album is almost like playing a little bit of a greatest hits,” he said. “As Beatles fans, it feels just as relevant today as any other music that’s out there.”

Raspberries tribute act The Razzz returning to Music Box Supper Club

Speaking of relevancy, last year the world was turned upside down when artificial intelligence helped to finish a new Beatles song, “Now and Then,” which became a global hit.

Landes said Rain doesn’t plan on adding the song to its setlist, which also doesn’t include cobbled-together post-Beatles breakup songs "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love.”

“That almost feels like sort of a different story,” he said. “Our show is sort of a theatrical retelling of The Beatles story from the time they got together to the time they broke up — and all of that music.”

The members of Rain: A Tribute to The Beatles perform on stage. (Matt Christine Photography)

And Four fandom doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Even Landes admitted over the last few decades he’s questioned whether Rain indeed had a shelf life related to waning interest among Beatles fans.

"Every time I thought, ‘This is kind of winding down,’ something comes along that reminds people of how great The Beatles are,” he said. “We’re seeing it again with the ‘Get Back’ series.

“Not only does it reinvigorate the Beatles fans that stepped away for a little bit, but it reminds them how much The Beatles meant to them. It also brings on new fans. So it ebbs and flows just like anything else. And the cool thing is that it gets handed down from generation to generation.”

Where: Playhouse Square’s KeyBank State Theatre, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

Aug. 1, 2023

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

TCM Classic Films Tour

Where: The Warner Bros. Studio, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank 91505

When: Most days, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $95 for adults; $82 for children. A SoCal resident discount is available for $75

Info: (818) 977-8687 or wbstudiotour.com

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”

Will Kemp (“ Christmas Waltz ”) and Reshma Shetty (“Blind Spot”) star in “Jolly Good Christmas,” a new, original movie premiering this year during Hallmark Channel’s beloved, annual “Countdown to Christmas” programing event. When David and Anji end up crossing paths again, he decides to hire her in the hopes of finding just the right gift. Thanks to a series of unexpected events, David finds himself on a wild adventure across Jolly Old London as Anji helps him search for the perfect present.

Hallmark Media is excited to share that Alison Sweeney ( The Wedding Veil trilogy) has agreed to a multi-picture overall deal with the networks.

For the 2022 Countdown to Christmas programming event, Sweeney stars in A Magical Christmas Village , which she also executive produces with Luke Macfarlane ( Moriah’s Lighthouse ) and guest star Marlo Thomas. In the movie, Sweeney stars as Summer, an architect living in a small town where she’s raising her young daughter Chloe (Maesa Nicholson, Dying for Chocolate: A Curious Caterer Mystery ). When her mother Vivian (Thomas) finds herself in need of a place to live, her orderly life becomes a little less so after inviting Vivian to move in with them during this transition. Upon arrival, Vivian sets up an heirloom, miniature Christmas village resembling their town and tells Chloe it grants Christmas wishes. As Chloe begins setting up the figurines, real-life events seem to mimic the scenes she creates, including Summer’s chance meeting with Ryan (Macfarlane), a newcomer to their community.

Hallmark Media announces the first original holiday movie for 2023 with “A Biltmore Christmas,” starring Bethany Joy Lenz (“Good Sam,” “ An Unexpected Christmas ”) and Kristoffer Polaha (“ We Wish You a Married Christmas ,” Jurassic World: Dominion ). Production is set to begin this January in Asheville, North Carolina at the historic Biltmore Estate, renowned for its classic holiday traditions since 1895. Although this National Historic Landmark has been home to many productions over the years, this movie marks the first time Biltmore Estate itself serves as the setting.

Lucy Collins (Lenz) is a screenwriter who lands the job of a lifetime when she’s hired to write the script for a remake of the beloved holiday movie His Merry Bride! First filmed in 1947 at beautiful Biltmore House, it has long been considered a Christmas classic. As Christmas approaches, Lucy travels to Biltmore Estate for research. She joins a guided tour of the grounds where she gets insights into the history of the location and the filming of His Merry Bride! , and once inside the house, she’s drawn to a beautiful hourglass. When Lucy accidentally knocks it over, she finds herself transported back in time to 1946 – the Golden Age of Hollywood – as cast and crew prepare to film His Merry Bride! at Biltmore. Lucy does her best to navigate an unfamiliar place as a woman out of time, charming some and raising suspicions of others. It’s not long before Lucy catches the eye of the film’s dashing lead Jack Huston (Polaha) and although she initially rebuffs his advances, their connection soon becomes undeniable. Lucy’s sudden appearance sets off a chain of events that put the production in jeopardy. Before she can return to the present, she must make things right or threaten to alter the future forever. Lucy has one chance to go home but must say goodbye to the man who might be her soulmate unless some Christmas magic can keep the curtain from closing on their love story.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” landing on Netflix and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” album are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : A family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in the animated movie “Migration” and Conan O’Brien as the brunt of jokes is on full display in his new travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go” for Max.

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— The cautious father (Kumail Nanjiani) of a family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in “Migration” (steaming Friday on Peacock), the latest animation from Illumination, the maker of “Despicable Me” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Penned by “White Lotus” creator Mike White, “Migration” is another, albeit more kid-friendly examination of the pros and cons of an exotic vacation. In my review, I wrote that “Migration” “is vividly animated with warm cartoon tones that would do Daffy proud. But it never quite spreads its wings.” With Elizabeth Banks, Danny DeVito, Carol Kane, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key.

— People tend to love or hate the films of Zack Snyder, the maker of brawny CGI extravaganzas like “Man of Steel,” “Justice League” and “Army of the Dead.” If you’re the former, the arrival of “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” (Friday on Netflix) is a date you’ve circled since the December debut of the first installment. Sofia Boutella and Djimon Hounsou lead the ensemble cast in Snyder’s “Star War” riff space opera.

– If some films are laden and overstuffed, how about those that pass like a brief encounter? A new series streaming on the Criterion Channel asks: How much can happen in a night? The series collects some of the best films that transpire entirely from dusk ‘til dawn. Evenings may pass in conversation (“My Dinner With Andre”) or bloodshed (“Night of the Living Dead”), but in all of them, the sun eventually arrives to break a nocturnal spell. Among the highlights: Elaine May’s “Mikey and Nicky,” Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours,” Jim Jarmusch’s “Night on Earth” and Agnes Varda’s “Cléo from 5 to 7.”

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

— It is Taylor Swift ’s world, and we continue to just live in it. On Friday, the savior of both contemporary pop music and the U.S. economy will release her highly anticipated 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” Swift surprise-announced the release in February at the 2024 Grammys after receiving the trophy for best pop vocal album for her tenth LP, “Midnights.” The day after the Grammys, Swift shared the track list, teasing 16 songs and two features: “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone — who is fresh off a feature on Beyoncé's “Act ll: Cowboy Carter” — and “Florida!!!” featuring Florence + the Machine. At a show in Melbourne, Australia, Swift described the album as “a lifeline,” adding “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on ‘Tortured Poets.’”

— Three decades into their career, and Pearl Jam’s 12th studio album, “Dark Matter,” arrives the same day as Swift’s — but don’t consider it competition; they’re keeping it in the family. Both acts are signed to Republic Records. Produced by Andrew Watt , “Dark Matter” is Pearl Jam’s first new record since 2020’s “Gigaton,” – a hard-rocking collection of songs from the saints of the 1990s Seattle scene that AP’s Andrew Dalton described as “athletic in its speed, aggression, and tenacity, sounding like it would make men of their age sore in the aftermath.” Listen responsibly.

— AP Music Writer Maria Sherman

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— Fresh off her Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone stars in a new limited series for Hulu called “Under the Bridge” with Riley Keough. Based on a true-crime novel by Rebecca Godfrey, “Under the Bridge” tells the story of the murder of Canadian teen Reena Virk in the late 1990s. Gladstone plays a police officer investigating the case and Keough plays Godfrey, who immersed herself in Virk’s world to detail not only what happened, but the social and cultural implications surrounding her death. “Under the Bridge” premiered Wednesday on Hulu and is already garnering Emmy buzz for both Gladstone and Keough.

— Conan O’Brien loves to be the brunt of a joke and that’s on full display in his new travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go” for Max. Cameras follow the comedian as he visits countries like Ireland, Thailand, Argentina and Norway. When the series was announced last May, Max released the following quote from O’Brien, “My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did.” “Conan O’Brien Must Go” debuted Thursday on Max.

— “Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan leaves the Regency era and steps into the present starring in the British comedy “Big Mood” for Tubi. Coughlan plays Maggie, a young playwright with bipolar disorder who has decided to go off her meds to tap into her creativity. Maggie relies on her loyal best friend Eddie (Lydia West) to get her through her daily struggles, but their friendship is tested as Maggie’s mental health deteriorates. “Big Mood” premieres Fridayon Tubi.

— The popular fantasy children’s book series “The Spiderwick Chronicles” has been adapted for TV. The story follows teenage twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory after they move to an old, family estate called Spiderwick, which is also inhabited by magical creatures. The show also stars Christian Slater, Joy Bryant and Jack Dylan Grazer. “The Spiderwick Chronicles” premieres on Roku Channel on Friday.

— National Geographic’s popular “Secrets Of” franchise has a new installment called “Secrets of the Octopus.” Debuting Sunday, the three-part series details the surprising characteristics of octopuses. These marine animals may look funny, but they have a level of intelligence where they solve problems, scheme and even communicate with other species. Narrated by Paul Rudd and executive produced by James Cameron, the docuseries is inspired by the book and research of Sy Montgomery.

— Alicia Rancilio

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— The second thing you’ll notice about Harold Halibut — after its goofy title — is its distinctive graphics. German indie studio Slow Bros. has built an entire game around hand-crafted models, and the result looks like stop-motion animation. The setting is a city-sized spaceship, the Fedora, that fled Earth 250 years earlier but unfortunately landed at the bottom of an alien ocean. Harold himself is the awkward young assistant to the ship’s chief scientist, who’s trying to figure out how to get it back into space. Will Harold help with that relaunch — or will he find himself drawn into the mystery of this strange planet? Dive on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.
