What is airbnb experiences.

Last updated on April 15th, 2020 by P. Duckworth / Host FAQs / Leave a Comment

So first things first, what is Airbnb experiences? That’s exactly what I will explain article, including a step by step guide showing you hot to sign up.

In short, Airbnb Experiences is a new way to experience a city, unlike your typical city tour. Airbnb has added their own twist, allowing locals to host their own tours and activities. The result is an experience that will truly immerse you in the culture of a city, all from a locals perspective.

This service has been a game changer for Airbnb since launching in November 2016. It has opened up a whole new way of making money for hosts who don’t own property . Meanwhile guests can truly experience any city around the world and live like a local.

I have written this article with the host in mind. However, there are some gems for guests as well. I’ll show you how safe Airbnb Experiences are and how to find the best listings.

How does Airbnb Experiences work?

Okay, you may be wondering how does Airbnb Experiences work? Well think of it this way… You know how Airbnb works for booking properties, right? Well experiences work the same way.

Let’s take a closer look from the perspective of a host and a guest.

If you love your city and want to showcase it to people around the world, then this is perfect for you. The good news is you don’t need to have a home to host an experience. All you need is an Airbnb account!

Next, register for Airbnb Experiences and follow the registration process. There are then 6 steps (which I will guide you through below) which wont take long to complete.

So what is an Airbnb Experience and what are some good ideas? Think of it as an opportunity to share your hobbies, skills or expertise with the world. You can be your very own tour guide and earn money doing something you love!

There isn’t a single particular market for experiences. It appeals to both guests and solo travelers. Meanwhile some use the platform to meet new people, while others like adventures. Below I’ll give you some great ideas of the type of experiences you could be hosting.

The unique selling point of staying in an Airbnb house is that it allows you to live like a local. But with Experiences, you can now truly experience a city like a real local.

One of the best things about this service is you don’t need to stay in an Airbnb home to book an experience. They usually last a few hours and are much cheaper than what tour companies can provide.

Popular experiences include things like city tours and walking treks. But the unique thing is locals are experts of their city, so it isn’t your typical guided tour. There are even experiences such as learning how to cook local dishes, workshops, Yoga, you name it!

How do I become an Airbnb Experience experience?

So now the big question, how do I become an Airbnb Experience experience ?

Create an Airbnb Experience in 6 Steps!

Step 1 – your idea.

First things first, you need to come up with an idea. Airbnb makes this process easy for you with a list of pre-determined themes to choose from.

You will need to select a primary theme from this list that best suits the type of experience you wish to provide. At the time of writing, there were 398 themes to choose from 26 different categories.

Category examples:

  • Adrenaline sports
  • Culture & history
  • Art & design
  • Outdoor activities

Airbnb gives you the opportunity to choose a second experience theme as well. Sometimes experiences can span more than one theme, so you can capture more areas.

The final step is to choose your location from the list of cities. Once you have have done this, it’s time to move on to Step 2!

Step 2 – Quality Standards

This step is pretty much just some reading material to make you familiar with Airbnb Experiences. You will need to meet three quality standards to host an experience.

First, Airbnb requires you to have expertise in an area. For example, you may be an artist, activist, chef, or local expert. In other words, hosts represent a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. Don’t be afraid to show your skills.

Second is access and the ability to give your unique perspective to guests. For example, you could provide access to places that only locals know about. Things such as family recipes, stories and communities. In other words, things guests can’t find easily on their own.

Last is connection . Airbnb expects you to inspire conversation and create belonging to guests. Your goal is to have guests come as strangers and leave as friends. You can do this by sharing personal stories, etc.

You’ll need to confirm to Airbnb that you understand their three quality standards. Then you can continue creating your Airbnb Experience.

Step 3 – Basic Information

As the title suggests, in this step you’ll enter in basic information about your service. There are three areas of focus; Language, Audience and Background.

First you must select the language of your Airbnb Experience. Simply select the languages that you speak fluently (you may select more than one).

Second is information about your audience . Here you can select if you have a specific audience, or if it’s for anyone. You may also select if you are hosting in connection with a partner group. There is also an option to state if you are a charity organisation.

Third is details on your background . Things like if you are hosting solo, or as part of a team. Plus how often you plan to host this experience. I have posted a screenshot of this section below to show you.

Step 4 – Your Experience

This step is where things start getting a bit more detailed. You will need to describe in detail your experience in this area. Airbnb will also expect you to provide some photos as well.

All in all, there are seven areas you will need to focus on which I have listed below. It’s quite detailed, but Airbnb is good at guiding you through this section. They’ll even provide you with some examples to help you out (as per the image below).

7 areas to detail your experience:

  • What you’ll do
  • Where you’ll be
  • What you’ll provide
  • What guests should bring

Step 5 – Airbnb Experience Settings

Here is where you add the finishing touches to your brand new Airbnb Experience. There are a list of seven items to finish describing your listing.

Things you’ll need to describe are your guest settings, duration and price. You’ll also need to set a meeting location and further notes for guests to read.

Examples of settings:

  • Meeting location
  • Guest notes
  • Guest requirements
  • Guest pricing
  • Booking settings

A lot of this section relates to guests. You can set minimum or maximum group sizes, or age requirements. There is also an option to request their ID, which helps keep Airbnb Experiences safe. Another option is to have a minimum time cut off for when guests can make a booking.

The duration of your experience will also need to be set, as well the start time. You will need to pin the starting location on a map, so guests are able to find you.

Finally, you will need to set your guest pricing. This is very important to get right and can make or break your Airbnb Experience. Keep in mind that Airbnb will take 20% of every booking in fees, which I’ll explain lower.

Step 6 – Submit your Airbnb Experience!

Congratulations! If you have made it this far, it means your listing is now complete!

This is your final chance to review your listing before publishing it. You’ll need to click three boxes to abide by Airbnb’s terms and conditions and then your work is now complete.

Once you have published and gone live, you will be able to start accepting bookings. This is an exciting time and I wish you well!

Airbnb Experience ideas

Ahhhhh, where to start? Coming up with Airbnb Experience ideas sounds like a hard thing, but actually, it’s quite easy.

All you need to do is ask yourself what am I good at? What are my hobbies? Where are my favourite parts of town? There are so may options available that coming up with experience ideas are more or less endless.

I showed you above there are 398 experience ideas across 26 categories that Airbnb offer. If you are unable to find some good ideas from that, then this may not be a good idea for you.

But to help you along, I will show you some popular ideas that other hosts have been making money with.

What percentage does Airbnb take for experiences?

You may be wondering what percentage does Airbnb take for experiences? It’s a very good question indeed.

“Airbnb charge a flat 20% fee for each experience.” Bnb Duck

Airbnb will take a flat 20% cut from each experience. By comparison, they charge hosts 3% for rental homes and guests up to 15% in service fees. Given the average Airbnb Experiences host between $50-$150, this is reasonable.

Thankfully Airbnb is quite transparent in how much they charge. In fact, they have a calculator you can play around with in the registration process. You may even remember seeing a screen shot of that in Step 5, by scrolling above.

So if you do decide to become a host, be sure to budget for a 20% fee charged for each guest.

Are Airbnb Experiences safe?

Airbnb has gone to great lengths to ensure their platform is safe. Hosts must go through a long signup process in order for Airbnb to approve them. So, are Airbnb Experiences safe?

Like anything, there is always going to be some degree of risk in these experiences. But luckily, there are some steps you can take to help ensure you remain safe. I touch on this in detail in my article is Airbnb safe ?

Below are some red flags to look out for, as well ways to investigate an Airbnb Experience. You should always do research, first and foremost.

Read Reviews & Ratings

The very first thing you should do before booking an Airbnb Experience is to read the reviews . This will immediately give you an idea of what you can expect.

For starters, if you see an Experience with a rating of around 4 or below, this is a red flag. You need to ask yourself why is this experience rated so lowly ?

The clues will be in the reviews. Guests are usually keen to write an honest review of their experience when they have a bad time. Scroll through the reviews and see if you can spot a common theme occurring. This will give you a good idea if this Airbnb experience is safe.

One tip is to look at how many total reviews an experience has. If a host has had 100+ total reviews and averages 4.8 stars, odds are this is a safe experience!

Quality & Eligibility Standards

Airbnb has very stringent quality standards for their Experiences. Hosts must meet very strict criteria in order for Airbnb to accept them on the platform. You can read more about those standards at Airbnb.com .

In fact, you may remember me speaking about them in Step 3 earlier in this article. Do you remember Expertise , Insider Access and Connection ?

Airbnb will review every experience submitted in minute detail, from top to bottom. A host must meet this criteria or else Airbnb will deny the application. And they do a damn fine job too, I must admit.

So rest easy, Airbnb are doing their best to ensure their platform is as safe as possible. Unsafe hosts wont last long as they will expose themselves quickly, which will lead to removal.

Look for red flags

When researching if an Airbnb Experience is safe, it pays to look for red flags. It can be tricky to do, but there some common things to look for.

First, last minute changes from your hosts are a warning sign! There should be no reason why something should change at the last minute. Sometimes things can go wrong, I get that, but just be careful.

Second, pay attention to photos. Airbnb requires hosts to post high definition and detailed photos on their experience platform. So if you notice low quality photos, or hiccups of some sort, it’s a warning sign.

Third, a good host will communicate well. If your hosts isn’t replying to you, or takes days to respond, this is another red flag.

And finally, if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. This is why it pays to look at the guest reviews and ratings, just to be sure. Check out this article on how to find the best Airbnb deals .

How can I promote my Airbnb Experience?

Okay, you’ve created a great listing, now you’re asking how can I promote my Airbnb experience ?

This is a whole topic within itself and one I will write about in the future! But for now, I’ll run you through some quick ideas that will work for you.

First things first, the very best thing you can do is write a great listing page. By that, I mean a catchy title and awesome photos that make you stand out on the search results.

Most of your traffic will come from the Airbnb Experiences search results, so you must stand out . Eventually you’ll get more and more bookings and good reviews will start coming in. Getting good reviews and good ratings is the best thing you can do to promote your listing, as it builds trust.

Next you can look at some external ways to promote your Airbnb experience. One great way is using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

You could even create a website to promote your experience and submit it to tourism websites. Offline, it’s a good idea to print brochures and flyers and leave them around town. These are both killer ways to promote your Airbnb experience.

I’ve seen hosts promote their experience on online blogs and tourism forums to get traffic also. The list is endless. Check out this website for some more good ideas.

Ideas to promote your Airbnb Experience

  • An awesome listing title & photos
  • Create a website and promote on tourism websites
  • Hand out brochures and flyers around town
  • Social media platforms, eg. Facebook, Instagram, etc
  • Word of mouth & getting 5 star reviews
  • Create special offers and bonus codes

In summary, as you can see there are many ways to promote your Airbnb Experience. But it all comes back to getting good reviews and star ratings.

Hopefully by now you have a good idea of what Airbnb Experiences are. And also, how to create your very own listing.

To summarise the article, it will take you between 30-60 minutes to create a listing. There are six steps involved and it’s quite detailed. You’ll have 398 themes to choose from 26 different categories. That’s a lot of options!

Yes, Airbnb Experiences is safe! I showed you some ways to determine if an experience is safe or not. The best way is to look at reviews and check their rating. Also, remember that the unsafe hosts will not last long on this platform at all. Airbnb vets all hosts in great detail.

There are also many great ways to promote your experience. But without doubt, writing a catchy title and having awesome photos is the best way. Next is to get good reviews. Do these three things well and you will make good money.

I wish you all the best! And as usual, I would love to hear some of your ideas in the comments sections below.

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

My Favorite Airbnb Experience: An After-Dark Bike and Food Tour Through Mexico City

As a lifelong vegetarian, I always get anxious about food while traveling. More often than not, I pack snacks and easy meals, having been trained to always travel with something to eat in case there are no other options.

But that doesn't mean I don't like to dine out: On a recent visit to Mexico City for the grand opening of Hyatt's Andaz Mexico City Condesa , I had one evening free to explore. I wanted to expand my palate and try some dishes more representative of regional Mexican cuisine .

When I began looking for recommendations on restaurants to try that would cater to vegetarians while still maintaining the authenticity of Mexican cuisine, I came across a  Night Food and Bike tour by FoodHoodmx on Airbnb Experiences.

According to Airbnb, the $60 bike and food tour would include stops at local taquerias, eclectic fusion restaurants, and nighttime street vendors (plus mezcal and beer at the final stop) while biking around Roma Norte and Condesa, two neighborhoods known for their artistic, bohemian vibes that influence everything from food and drink to decor and shopping.

I was immediately intrigued but also hesitant due to my dietary restrictions. Fernando Luis Miranda, the owner of  Foodhoodmx , reassured me that “as long as you are open to trying out new flavors, we will make sure you are well-fed.” And Mario Hernandez Martinez, my tour guide, promised, “No one leaves our tour feeling hungry.”

When I met Mario to begin the tour, we shared a refreshing drink of agua fresca, a blend of sparkling water and fresh fruits like pineapple, mango, and strawberry to cleanse our palates. I tried a tall cold glass of tangy, sweet pineapple agua fresca, a crowd favorite. Foodhoodmx fitted me with a cruiser bicycle that was particularly comfortable for pedaling city streets—the geometry of its frame promotes an upright riding position.

Biking around CDMX was much more pleasant than I expected from a big city. There are many bicycle lanes along the streets of Roma Norte and Condesa, and drivers tend to be careful around cyclists. Plus, having a resident as a guide who was familiar with the area added an element of safety and comfort.

Our first stop was  Gracias Madre Taqueria Vegana in the Roma Norte neighborhood, a block from  Museo del Objecto , the city's famed design museum. This taco stand is fully vegan, using fresh ingredients that are made daily. I tried a vegan suadero taco. Typically, suadero is a thin cut of meat from the intermediate part of the cow between the belly and the leg. Mine was made with soy protein, and while I have no point of reference to the meat one, Mario assured me that it tasted as tender and chewy as the typical carne version.

A juicy saucy cup of esquites is the perfect snack.

We then rode a couple of blocks west to Tizne Tacomotora, a Korean Mexican fusion taqueria. I had a blue corn tortilla with smoked eggplant that tasted sweet and earthy but also slightly bitter. The smoky flavor comes from cooking the eggplant on a traditional Korean barbecue that brought out the sweetness and bitterness of the eggplant.

From there, we biked along Reforma Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in Mexico City. Nestled among office buildings and high-end shopping malls was a small street food stall where we sampled esquites, a cup of juicy corn kernels roasted until golden brown, then slowly cooked in a delicious mix of herbs and spices. Layered with mayo, lime juice, and spicy, nutty salsa macha, this dish is typically eaten as an afternoon snack. Mario explained that most people who work in Mexico City live in its suburbs and munch on the esquites as a post-work snack before making the trek home.

Next on the  Foodhoodmx night bike tour , on the way to our next destination, was a ride through Zona Rosa (Pink Zone), Mexico City’s LGBTQ+ neighborhood. It was a buzzing street with vibrant nightlife. Several intersections had vendors selling hats, purses, snacks, and cell phone cases.

We then headed back to Condesa looping around Parco Spain, a large green space, to reach our last meal—Dona Isa, a food stand on the street corner selling fresh quesadillas, sopes, and gorditas. I had a mushroom and onion filled quesadilla topped with lettuce, homemade queso, and salsa verde. The crispy outside, soft mushroom filling, salty queso, and spicy salsa all complemented each other for an explosion of flavor and taste in every bite. (Dona Isa is open from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., a perfect after-party food stop.)

Our final stop was a drinking one. Mario insisted we wash down the food with a local favorite. We rode our bikes to Tucco, where Mario and I shared a Michelada, a refreshing drink made with beer, chamoy de Tamarindo, and lime juice. As the night tour finished, I was so thankful to Mario for feeding me the culture of this great city and sharing his personal experiences and knowledge along the way. A new city becomes less intimidating when you have a friend to show you around—indeed, that is what I felt after an evening with Mario during the  Night Food and Bike tour by FoodHoodmx .

Airbnb Testing "City Hosts" To Pair Travelers With Local Tour Guides

You may soon have the chance to ditch cliché bus tours for a true local experience.

Headshot of Kelsey Kloss

But the company isn't stopping with unique lodging options. It's now dipping its toes in taking over the tour guide industry, with a local twist.

Airbnb is testing City Hosts, multiday programs that pair travelers with city residents for true "local" experiences. Let's say you're visiting London. City Hosts helps you meet up with a record scout for a tour of London's Grime music scene. Or if you're in San Francisco, you can get kite surfing lessons from a pro, reports Lonely Planet .

Honestly, we wouldn't mind swapping a stuffy bus tour for those vacay itineraries.

airbnb san francisco

Prices vary, but most hover around $200, according to Brit + Co . The program is still in the private beta testing stage — and only available in 11 cities, such as San Francisco, Paris and Havana — but you can get on the waitlist on the City Hosts landing page .

Airbnb isn't spilling any more details. According to the company, the program is still super under wraps. (Literally, the City Hosts website says, "This is still under wraps.")

"Airbnb is constantly looking at new ways to enhance and improve the platform by testing different user features," an Airbnb representative told ELLEDecor.com.

By our count, City Hosts appears to be the latest development in Airbnb's strategy to infuse easy-to-access experiences with travel. Last year, Airbnb also experimented with Airbnb Journeys, which involved the company booking entire trips complete with accommodations, transportation, daily meals and tours, for a flat fee. That program apparently never left the beta testing phase.

Here's hoping City Hosts will have a different outcome — and to consequently kite surfing in San Fran.

One caveat: You do need to book a place to stay through Airbnb to snag access to the tours. But if you're booking an Airbnb tour, you were probably going to do that anyway, right?

The Yucatan food in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is also well-known and very well-loved. Signature dishes here include cochinita pibil, a type of suckling pig that’s marinated in local spices and slow-roasted underground.

One of the best traditional Mexican foods you can have for breakfast or brunch is chilaquiles (pronounced chill-ah-kil-les).

Chilaquiles is a traditional breakfast dish that originated in Central Mexico hundreds of years ago. What makes this dish so great is that it can be prepared in many ways.

You can order chilaquiles with salsa roja (red salsa), salsa verde (green salsa), or both, and even mole . It can be made with day-old totopos (tortilla chips), so the chips soak up all the salsa, but some places use fresh chips.

2. Tortas (Sandwiches)

airbnb city tour

One of the most famous Mexicans sayings is about making sure to get your daily dose of Vitamin T — the T of course stands for tacos, but also for tamales and tortas.

As far as Mexico street foods go, the torta (sandwich) is just as important as the taco. While tacos are one of the most common Mexican lunch foods, many eat tortas for breakfast.

3. Guajolota (tamal Torta)

A guajolota (pronounced waa-ho-low-tah) is a torta with a tamal inside it. Basically — a tamale sandwich. You’ll find these for sale from street vendors in the morning, as it’s a popular breakfast sandwich for workers on the go.

4. Chilaquiles Tortas

Another popular breakfast torta is the chilaquiles torta. The most famous place to get a Mexico City chilaquiles torta is La Esquina del Chilaquil , where people sometimes line up for an hour to get their sandwich.

5. Chicharron Preparado

airbnb city tour

Chicharrón Preparado, or “prepared chicharron,” is a beloved Mexican City street food.

At first glance, they look like a square pizza topped with veggies. However, instead of being pizza dough, it’s a large chicharron de harina , a rectangular-shaped flatbed made of fried corn flour that puffs up when fried.

The cooked chicharron de harina is topped with shredded cabbage, tomatoes, sliced avocado, shredded cheese, jalapeño peppers, crema (sour cream), Valentina hot sauce and squeeze of fresh lime to top it all off.

6. Tlacoyos

airbnb city tour

Tlacoyos (pronounced tla-coy-yos) are one of the best foods from Mexico City, and something you’ll usually only find sold on the streets. This Mexico City street foods staple dates back even before the Aztecs.

Made with blue or yellow masa (cornmeal dough), the football-shaped tortilla of the tlacoyos is much thicker than a taco tortilla.

Vendors stuff the dough with any combination of pinto or fava beans, potatoes, chicharron (pork rinds), and a creamy Mexican cheese called requesón.

They are then dry-fried on large griddles, so the outside of the crisps, while the inside stays soft and doughy — the key factor to its deliciousness.

There are a lot of variations of sweet breads, or pan dulce in Mexico. Of them all, there is none more popular than the concha, meaning “shell.”

This traditional breakfast pastry gets its name from a shell-shaped pattern made with sugar that’s on top of the bread.

8. Machetes

If you stretched a taco to 10 times its original length, you’d have a machete. It’s actually a cross between quesadilla and a long taco — think 18- to 23-inches-long (45-60 cm) — and something you rarely see outside Mexico City.

9. Gorditas de Nata

Gorditas de nata | Mexico food vendor

Gorditas de nata, meaning “clotted cream biscuits,” are a popular Mexico City street food.

This sweet treat looks like a cross between a pancake and a biscuit, though much smaller than both. These bite-sized cookies are made with crema de nata, which is a sweetened, heavy cream.

10. Camotes

Camotes literally means “sweet potatoes,” but these are served as a dessert in Mexico with lechera (sweetened, condensed milk) on top. You can buy them from street vendors, who usually have sweet potatoes and plantains to sell.

What is the most famous food in Mexico City?

Tacos — Tacos and Mexico City go together like milk and cookies! The most popular and best Mexico City tacos are tacos al pastor. These are pork tacos marinated in spices and cooked on a spit (called a trompo).

However, there are plenty of other types of tacos in Mexico City you’ll want to try. These include:

  • Suadero tacos: A fatty cut of meat located between the belly and the leg
  • Tacos de canasta: Meaning “basket tacos”

Here are 5 tips to pick the best street food in Mexico City:

1. Look for long lines:  Long lines mean a good reputation for both their food, and their hygiene.

2. Look for taxi cabs:  Cab drivers drive around all day, so they can eat anywhere they want — because of this, they also know where all the delicious, inexpensive, hygienic places are.

3. Look for two employees:  Make sure there are at least two people working, and that the one cooking the food is  not  the one handling the money.

Have Airbnb Guest Favorites Overshadowed the Superhost Program?

Srividya Kalyanaraman , Skift

April 20th, 2024 at 8:00 AM EDT

Some individual hosts feel the superhost program is too rigid, while others believe it’s overshadowed by listings-focused Guest Favorites.

Srividya Kalyanaraman

Achieving Airbnb superhost status usually means more money in your pocket, and it comes with several perks. But some hosts are critical about the program’s current status on Airbnb.

The main complaint: That Guest Favorites  have overshadowed superhosts. Guest Favorites highlight properties most liked and booked by guests and superhost status highlights hosts who go above and beyond to provide excellent hospitality. A superhost badge helps profiles stand out, and guests can sometimes use a filter to find them.

“Earlier, the superhost filter itself was very prominently listed,” said Matthew Orley, the CEO of Red Cottage , based in New York City. “In the update that they did in January, Airbnb removed that. And it was not really spoken to. But it was very clear that the new filters that are prominent at the top are Guest Favorites. So now you’re searching for the Guest Favorite, which is much more of a focus on the individual property, as opposed to the host itself.”

Airbnb said there are more than 1 million superhosts, or about 20% of all hosts around the world.

An Airbnb spokesperson told Skift, “We’ve simplified some of our search filters and added a new Guest Favorites filter to help guests find some of the most-loved homes on the platform. Guests will still be able to see whether their host is a superhost on the listing page. Today, nearly two-thirds of Guest Favorites come from superhosts.”

Superhost Qualifications and Requirements

This is how it works: In order to qualify as a superhost, the owner of the listing must have an account and have fulfilled the following requirements:

  • Completed a minimum of 10 trips or 3 reservations totaling at least 100 nights.
  • Maintained a response rate of 90% or higher.
  • Kept cancellations to fewer than 1%, with allowances for cases covered by Airbnb’s recently changed Major Disruptive Events Policy.
  • Maintained an overall host rating of 4.8 or higher.

Airbnb reviews a host’s performance quarterly, considering the past 12 months of activity on all listings. Hosts don’t need to have hosted for the entire 12 months to qualify. The assessment periods run for seven days starting on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.

If they meet the requirements by the assessment date, they will become a superhost automatically without needing to apply.

Superhost Benefits

Airbnb superhosts are rewarded well: Airbnb claims it enhances the visibility and appeal of listings, builds trust with potential guests, and can lead to increased bookings and revenue.

Superhosts earn more too — an average increase of 22% . Additionally, they receive a 20% bonus on host referrals and an annual travel coupon. They may also qualify for complimentary photography sessions to enhance the appeal of listings. Superhosts also get priority support from Airbnb.

Some Hosts Feel The Checklist Is Rigid

Airbnb seems to have given heightened prominence to Guest Favorites, which often appear on multiple listings across the homepage.

And some hosts say there are other factors that influence superhost status. These could include: the number of guests a property can host, average occupancy nights (i.e. demand for the rental) and average listing price.

Skift spoke to some hosts who feel like the program can be too rigid, without consideration for special circumstances — especially when it comes to cancellations.

airbnb city tour

Nicki Hutchman, who runs vacation rental company Competa Escapes in Malaga, Spain, said the superhost program, though beneficial for visibility, is very strict about fulfilling all of the requirements.

“The Superhost program is based on maintaining a minimum number of nights. You can be excellent at what you do and score very highly, but if you don’t get the minimum number of nights (perhaps like us due to a high percent of direct bookings) you may not make this quota,” Hutchman said. “Also so many guests now threaten to leave a bad review if you don’t give a discount, early check-in, late check-out that hosts can get a negative review score when actually they have offered a great service and delivered everything they promised. Blackmailing over reviews is a real problem in the industry.”

Airbnb acknowledges that it places a lot of emphasis on cancellations. An Airbnb spokesperson said that cancellations, whether last minute or in advance, can cause holiday anxiety for guests and break the trust they expect when booking a listing on Airbnb.

The company also has made changes to reduce cancellations. These include adjusting default booking settings and reducing calendar availability to give new hosts greater control and flexibility before their first booking. New pricing tools allow hosts to easily see the price guests pay to prevent inaccurate pricing. Also there are firmer consequences and stricter policies for host cancellations that could have been avoided.

“Following these updates, in the final quarter of 2023, Host cancellations were reduced by 36%,” the spokesperson said.

Can Hosts Opt Into Some Features?

Orley, the Red Cottage CEO, which provides vacation rental management for destinations around New York City, said that while traveling he only seeks to stay with superhosts to avoid properties that are not adequately vetted. But he noticed they’re not top of the search on Airbnb anymore.

Orley also said that features like the host offering instant booking — where guests can book a place without host approval — give the property more visibility.

“All of these mechanisms, through which Airbnb gives a property more visibility — there are a lot of different things at play,” Orley said. “And you as an individual or as a professional host, you’re still considering all of these things in tandem… We don’t do instant booking because we want more security and we want to vet our guests, that diminishes the standing within the search rankings.”

Orley also said that factors that are not within a hosts’ control can sometimes impact superhost status.

“At the same time, there are things that raise a listing higher,” Orley said. “We also know that the recency and the frequency of reviews will push you higher, which is not something that’s necessarily in your hands, it’s just all of these things that helped the algorithm soar.”

Hosts like Orley and Hutchman, whose businesses don’t depend on Airbnb because they say they have a lot of direct bookings, feel like the superhost badge is an all-or-nothing proposition. They cannot opt into some features and opt out of others.

“We know there are other things that we’re opting out of, we’re opting out of instant books. So we’re trying to figure out how we can raise, and improve your performance, while not necessarily even buying into the entire package that Airbnb is selling,” Orley said.

Airbnb’s Challenge

Some hosts understand that managing the superhost program can be a herculean task for Airbnb, especially at the rate supply is increasing. At the end of 2023, Airbnb said it had 7.7 million active listings , compared to 6.6 million at the end of 2022.

“I think that’s a struggle the whole industry has had as more and more listings come on board,” said Wendy Qi, who along with her husband owns and manages eight Airbnb properties. “How do you differentiate? It’s very hard and I understand Airbnb’s position where it’s the arbiter of who makes a good host and who doesn’t. I have had to cancel reservations because of road closure, which was out of my control, and I think Airbnb allows for one cancellation without penalty.”

At the same time, Qi agrees that overall, the superhost badge is validation for a host that comes with certain benefits.

“There is still something there for hosts in the superhost program. But when I saw that Airbnb came out with Guest Favorites, that also made sense to me because it’s both hard and easy to earn the superhost badge. Like you could be a superhost but guests may not favor you.”

Finding the right house in any town can easily turn into an hours-long pursuit, so we did some of the hard work for you and found chic stays in the top five spots. Whether you make it there or not, there’s something we can all take away from the rentals below.

The One With the Grand Pool Entrance

long pool

If you’re a sucker for arches, look no further than Çeşme. This three-story stone villa has panoramic views, but when you’re relaxing by the 130-foot-long pool, it’s hard not to focus on the giant archway off the deck that leads into the living room.

The One Near Ancient Ruins

arched bathroom doorway

This villa near the ruins of Erythrae similarly boasts lots of stucco, stone, and curves.

The One That Feels Country But Is Beach-Adjacent

white house with green door

As the biggest and most populous island in the Adriatic, Krk will keep your itinerary jam-packed. But in busy waterfront destinations, it’s nice to come back to a true escape, like this charming two-bedroom house that’s only 150 meters away from the beach.

The One Where You Can Hot Tub and Dine at the Same Time

dining table near pool

Or if you prefer to be close to the action, this condo in the center of town has got a hot tub (it’s easy to find as it’s right next to the dining room) and an infrared sauna.

The One That’s Most Like Visiting a Spa

hinoki tub

This minimalist cottage in Hallim-eub promises an ocean view from anywhere in the house, including the natural hinoki bath, which the host suggests has the same effect as taking a forest bath.

The One That’s a Respite Next to the Airport

This highly rated rental 15 minutes from the airport also offers a hot tub experience and, to complete your wind-down routine, a fully stocked tearoom.

The One That’s a Touch Scandi, a Touch Caribbean

For a private resort-style experience, consider one of these stays for large groups. The above villa can house 15 guests (and four small dogs), while the one pictured below can comfortably accommodate eight guests .

Airbnb reveals the top wish-listed properties for summer 2024

Play-based stays are having a moment

The summer travel season is nearly here, and smart travelers are planning in advance. So where is everyone going? Airbnb has some insight into where people are heading and what kinds of experiences they’re looking for. Their 2024 Summer Travel Trends report reveals the places and properties that are trending across the platform for summer travel.

Sporting events this summer are going to be huge: the Olympics in Paris and European Football Championships in Germany are a big draw in Europe, but Airbnb data shows that travelers are increasingly looking for properties near America’s Soccer Tournament as well, in cities like Glendale, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Airbnb also reveals that users are searching the platform’s Play category in numbers more than double those of last year. Travelers are seeking stays this summer that are experiences in their own right, wish-listing places like an entire house with a massive games room in Illinois, a cabin with a whole playground in Oklahoma and a luxury compound in California with everything from pickleball and basketball to a pool and putting green. Families are also searching for fun, showing an increase in searches for amenities like barbecues, pools and private outdoor areas.

The top trending destinations this summer, according to Airbnb, are Quincy, Washington; Columbia, South Carolina; Las Vegas, Nevada; Glendale, Arizona; Ouray, Colorado; Eugene, Oregon; Broken Bow, Oklahoma; Saint Paul, Minnesota; Rosemary Beach, Florida and Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

For insight and inspiration, check out the full 2024 Summer Travel Trends report .

My Favorite Airbnb Experience: Exploring the Rainforests of Rio de Janeiro on an E-Bike

“Do you hear that?” We halt to a stop on our e-bikes as our guide, Stefano listens intently to the sounds of Rio’s rainforest for one particular note. Listen, cycle, listen, cycle. His excitement is infectious and my husband and I are both listening harder and pedaling faster, just as deeply invested in the chase.

“It’s there, look!” We're squinting, scanning the thick, tropical canopy when we finally see it: a flash of orange, the bright bill of a toucan, owner of the distinct call (not quite unlike a croaking frog) that we’ve been tracking. Upon closer inspection, we spot two of them, and Stefano smiles at us, explaining that toucans generally travel in pairs.

My husband, Alex, and I traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to celebrate our honeymoon exactly one year after our wedding in Mexico City . When planning our itinerary, I was determined to squeeze the most out of our five days in the Marvelous City. Neither of us are generally lie-on-the-beach-with-a-cocktail types of travelers—relaxing for us usually involves a physical activity rooted in nature, a forced digital detox as both of our jobs require us to spend a lot of our time online.

Santa Teresa and Tijuca National Park E-bike Tour

$53.00, Airbnb (per person)

We split our days in Rio between the verdant hills of Santa Teresa and Ipanema’s iconic stretch of sand. When searching Airbnb for nature-based activities in each place, I came across Stefano’s electric bike tours of the Tijuca National Park rainforest .

“My goal is to make you fall in love with the city I fell in love with. I want you to discover every beautiful corner of Rio in an experience totally immersed in nature,” he wrote in the description. His profile also touted that he was the first guide to bring e-bike tours to Rio, and that he had a five-star rating on Airbnb. I actually found myself tearing up as I scrolled through his reviews, one after the other fervidly detailing the experience as the highlight of their trip.

Stefano offers two versions of the tour: one that lasts five hours, and one that lasts three. The amount of ground covered depends on the group: how fast they pedal, how often they want to stop, and so on. We opted for the three-hour tour and effortlessly covered a whopping 19 miles—a feat I didn’t quite believe until Stefano showed us a 3D map that plotted our journey.

A major appeal of the e-bike tour is that it enables people not only to cover a lot of ground through the rainforest, but also to see extraordinary views similar to—and often better than—the views at the more popular and crowded vistas. The forest routes Stefano guided us through were blissfully empty, including the 2016 Olympic cycling route, filled only with the hum of birds and bugs, and the occasional croak of the toucans.

There is no place like Rio—that much is clear from any viewpoint. A city perched between a rainforest and a beach feels like something I made up in my dreams. There are many places to take in the city’s mind blowing vistas, like hiking to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that lords over the city, or by taking a cable car up to Sugarloaf Mountain. But those platforms can get quite crowded, which tends to sap that special feeling of breathing in and connecting to a new place, and to the people who live there.

It rained the first three days of our trip, so much so that Stefano kindly advised us to postpone our tour to a sunnier day. So when the rain finally cleared and we arrived at the meeting point—his home in Santa Teresa—we were bursting with energy. Stefano not only matched our excitement, but kicked it up a gear as he gave us a quick tutorial and before tour.

Our route weaved through hilly Santa Teresa as we made our way toward the Tijuca National Park rainforest. We stopped frequently to take in views of the city, while Stefano thoughtfully answered our questions about the city and gave us food recommendations (like Cultivar for the neighborhood’s best pao de queijo and açaí). As we made our way to the forest paths, we encountered monkeys with solemn stares, and passed by a python Stefano described as “quite lazy.”

As we rode around and stopped at lookouts, Stefano took photos and videos of us—on his camera, on our phones, and with my film camera. Alex and I generally shy away from photos together, but Stefano insisted, and I am so grateful he captured these moments on our honeymoon, looking sweaty and dorky in our helmets, but most of all—incredibly happy.

We were fortunate to have many incredible experiences on our trip, like the surf lesson at Macumba, unbelievable meals at Aprazível and Oteque , devouring bags of pao de quejo while sipping “stupid-cold” beer (as the Cariocas call it) by the beach. But when we tell people about our honeymoon, the thing we find ourselves raving about is the bike tour, our guide Stefano, and the pair of toucans.

City continues work to track short-term rentals as police investigate guest's viral claims of local Airbnb

airbnb city tour

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - — Police are investigating, and the neighborhood is reacting after a wild story went viral at a local Airbnb.

A woman claims to have been a target of human traffickers while staying at a home in Masterson Station.

"We think about our own security and our own safety. We started putting bars on our doors now," said Pat Belcher who lives on the block.

Lexington police say on Saturday at around 11:30 p.m., officers were dispatched for suspicious activity.

When officers arrived, they say the guests told them they came back to the home and noticed a door unlocked and a window opened.

"Nothing was reported missing and officers could not determine if someone had unlawfully entered the residence. Officers told the guests that if they felt unsafe, they should go to a hotel. The officers then stayed in the area until the guests left," wrote Public Information Officer Hannah Sloan. "At this time, there is no indication that the incident is related to human trafficking and the investigation is ongoing to determine if any criminal activity occurred."

Belcher, who has lived in the area for 17 years, says whether the claims in the post turn out to be true or not, neighbors have questions.

"Our biggest question was the owner of the Airbnb. How did she not know? Is she involved?" Belcher asked.

The listing on Airbnb calls it "a perfect private home with deck and yard."

Host Rosanna has more than 500 reviews and a 4.86 rating, which is considered good.

Reviews show there were safety issues with locks, including over a year ago, one door was allegedly kept closed with a two-by-four piece of wood.

Neighbors say there are quite a few short-term rentals in Masterson Station.

The city of Lexington passed rules for short-term rentals last summer, requiring owners to have a permit from the division of planning and be licensed by the division of revenue.

Traci Wade, Director of the Division of Planning, says it's mainly an administrative policy to regulate land use and generate revenue.

"At the time there was an issue identified with tracking the short term rentals," Wade explained.

She says if the public wants information on a short-term rental property in their area, they can always call the division of revenue.

According to the division, the home is not licensed with the city and is on their radar for citation after complaints.

The owner of the home has not responded to our requests at this time.

The city is considering contracting with a technology company to monitor complaints and take action on short-term rentals when necessary. The contract still needs the council's final approval.

Netflix's "Ripley" spurs surge in bookings to Atrani area in Italy, Airbnb says

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

April 17, 2024 / 10:11 AM EDT / CBS News

Netflix's new series based on Patricia Highsmith's 1950's crime novel, "The Talented Mr. Ripley," has fans of the show yearning to experience the picturesque Amalfi Coast, where much of the show was filmed.

The book's latest adaptation is even driving traffic to the particular town in which it's filmed, Atrani, a tiny seaside municipality with a local population of less than 1,000 people.

Home-sharing site Airbnb said the miniseries, called "Ripley," has led to a 93% increase in bookings in Ravello, a city about 15 minutes away from Atrani.

Bookings in nearby Minori also increased 62% on the weekend of the release of "Ripley," compared with the same weekend one year earlier, according to Airbnb.

"It's no surprise that a show as visually spectacular as 'Ripley' is inspiring viewers to explore the Amalfi Coast for their next getaway," Amanda Cupples, general manager for Airbnb UK and Northern Europe, said in a statement. "As it spotlights a lesser-known Italian city of Atrani, this is showing travelers that they can avoid the crowds, while simultaneously quenching their 'Ripley' wanderlust."

Known for its slow pace of life, cobblestone streets and trattorias, Atrani is less crowded than better-known destinations on the Amalfi Coast. But local business owners are bracing for change in anticipation of unusually large crowds this summer.

Some say they're grateful for the exposure, while others are concerned about being overrun.

"This coast is saturated with overtourism. If more visitors come because of the series, I sincerely hope they come in low season," Antonella Florio, of apartment rental company Maison Escher told The Guardian .

Another property manager, Luisa Criscolo, told the outlet that an increase in visitors needs to be "managed intelligently."

"Our village can't cope with huge numbers of tourists. Cars, buses and motorbikes leave the traffic paralyzed. The authorities need to keep a decent amount of places open longer so some visits can be channelled to other times of year, and must also encourage use of waterborne transport, and offer more frequent services on smaller buses," she said.

While the Amalfi Coast is popular with tourists, particularly in the summertime, the most searched for city worldwide on Airbnb this summer is Paris, the host of the 2024 Olympic Games. Consumers are also searching for stays in nearby towns and cities like Lille, Versailles and Lyon, where some Olympic events will be held, according to Airbnb.

Taylor Swift performing on stage

These pets’ names are Taylor-made.

Taylor Swift fans are known to give their fur babies monikers inspired by the pop star — and there was a recent spike in this Swiftie tradition ahead of the release of her double album “ The Tortured Poets Department ” on Friday.

Poet, a Mini Australian Labradoodle with curly dark brown fur and blue eyes, sits on a wooden walkway

Besides the name Taylor itself, her song and album titles like Karma, Red and Midnight made the Top 10 list , as well as Travis and Kelce , in honor of her Super Bowl-winning boyfriend , according to user data compiled by pet insurance marketplace Pawlicy Advisor .

“I had searched Taylor-themed girl names and wasn’t getting anything I just loved, then it hit me — ‘Poet’ would be perfect,” said Bridget Colbert, who picked up her Mini Australian Labradoodle on April 10.

The mom of four daughters said their family’s new addition will help them get over not being able to attend the songstress’ current concert tour.

“Being able to afford that many attending the Eras Tour isn’t an option, the next best thing was a sweet pup,” Colbert, 40, who lives in Elizabeth City, NC, told The Post.

Heather Argrave got a new kitten on April 14 and named her “Willow,” after the lead single from Swift’s 2020 album “Evermore.”

Willow, short hair Calico

The Prairieville, LA resident works as a nurse in the emergency department of a veterinary teaching hospital, and the short hair Calico was brought in because of the kindness of a stranger.

“We receive what’s called ‘Good Samaritan’ animals. These are strays that people take the time to stop and pick up and bring to us for medical care,” said Argrave, 39.

“Willow came in covered in fleas and she was tied in a grocery bag and dumped. I immediately fell in love with her. And I named her Willow cause it’s one of my favorites [in Swift’s catalog].”

She is currently teaching Willow the lyrics to her namesake, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in December 2020.

“Every time we snuggle, I sing, ‘Head on the pillow I feel you sneaking in,'” Argrave explained.

“When I sing ‘Life is a willow,’ she will purr.”
