Raised on salsa, merengue, and cumbia, Blacc fell in love with hip-hop as a kid and started writing rap songs when he was nine. With his lyrics drawing influence from socially conscious artists like KRS-One, he put out his first hip-hop mixtape at age 17. Later developing a fierce admiration for such soul musicians as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, he also discovered an affinity for folk-rock singer/songwriters during his college years. “One of the most important factors in my transition from hip-hop to being a singer was listening to people like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, and Cat Stevens,” Blacc says. “Their songs are full of emotion that’s expressed in strong lyrics, and that had a big impact on me.”
After inking a deal with indie label Stones Throw, Blacc released his solo debut Shine Through in 2006 and sophomore album Good Things in 2010. Boosted by the breakout success of “I Need a Dollar” (which was selected as the theme song to HBO’s How To Make it In America), Good Things reached gold status in countries around the world and paved the way for his signing to XIX Recordings/Interscope Records in 2012. Made in collaboration with groundbreaking producers like Pharrell Williams, Lift Your Spirit dropped on New Year’s Day in 2014, debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Album.
Looking back on his musical path so far, Blacc notes that landing a deal with XIX Recordings/Interscope prompted a major moment of reckoning, and led him to re-examine his artistic intentions. “When I signed a major-label contract, I recognized the power of having a larger audience, and I promised myself that I’d use my voice for social change,” he says. And in creating his upcoming album, Blacc has kept focused on making music meant to inspire a positive shift in mindset. “When things happening in the world seem so terrible and dark, it’s so easy to get stuck in all the negative,” he says. “But I try to do whatever I can to help people out of that. I want my music to be the light.”

Aloe Blacc Concert Tickets
Get ready to groove with your Aloe Blacc tickets from TicketSmarter. A modern soul singer equally at home belting out dance floor electro anthems or strutting to jazzy hip hop, Aloe Blacc's eclectic range of tastes and influences make him one of the more interesting new pop voices. Born and raised in Los Angeles by Panamanian parents, he grew up playing trumpet before discovering LL Cool J and Run DMC and later started his own hip hop group Emanon with producer Exile in the mid-1990s.
Together they released three independent albums of experimental break beats, Dizzy Gillespie samples and socially conscious rhymes, while Blacc completed a degree at the University of Southern California and worked as a business consultant. Penning I Need A Dollar after losing his job during the recession, the track reached Number 2 in the singles chart and was used as the theme tune to HBO television series How To Make It In America; while second album Good Things (2010) made the Top 10 and featured a cover of the Velvet Underground's Femme Fatale. Further success came when he lent his smooth vocals to Avicii's dance hit Wake Me Up, which reached Number 1 in 22 countries and sold over a million copies in the UK alone. You’re bound to hear a mix of R&B and soul tracks with your Aloe Blacc tickets.

Aloe Blacc, the globally acclaimed hitmaker, has been on an incredible journey since his first global classic hit “I Need A Dollar”. In addition to his musical endeavors, he has devoted time to an even more cherished project: his family. ‘All Love Everything’, his last album, is the singer-songwriter's heartfelt collection of songs written from the perspective of a father, husband and friend, a transformative journey that expanded Blacc's already profound artistic palette. "Becoming a father inspired me to share these experiences through music," he reflects, acknowledging the challenge of capturing such powerful emotions in lyrics and melodies. However, those who have followed Blacc throughout his career are aware of his mastery of language and sound—qualities that make him uniquely suited to the task.
Blacc, raised by Panamanian immigrants in Southern California, was immersed in the vibrant sounds of salsa, merengue, and cumbia during his upbringing. Initially drawn to hip-hop, he later explored the possibilities of his soulful voice in various musical realms. Over the course of four albums, his sound evolved and matured, finding a sweet spot that reflects the rich and timeless legacy of American soul music. Blacc's descriptive and evocative songwriting captures the broad spectrum of human experience, from platonic love to love for humanity, from political observations to personal aspirations. Versatile and compassionate, his songwriting transcends genre boundaries, having been successfully paired with dance music and country, always evoking deep emotions. Aloe Blacc defies categorization.
"My music follows a theme I call A.I.M.: Affirmation, Inspiration, and Motivation," he explains. While beloved hits like "I Need a Dollar," "The Man," and "Wake Me Up" (with Avicii) may not fit neatly into the same musical box, they are united by the emotional impact they have on listeners. That is Blacc's forte—creating music that resonates deeply. Reflecting on his journey, he has come to the realization that his songwriting genre is thematic, allowing him to authentically connect with audiences without the confines of a specific musical label.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the global hit "Wake Me Up," an anthem that defined a generation and was co-written and performed by Aloe Blacc. This groundbreaking collaboration with the late Avicii shattered EDM boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape and was honored this year with the RIAA Diamond Certification. In celebrating this milestone, Blacc acknowledges the power of music to unite and uplift, while also emphasizing the importance of prioritizing mental health in today's world.
Currently, Aloe Blacc is in the process of writing his next solo album, with the highly anticipated first single slated for release in the fall of 2023. As always, fans eagerly await Blacc's new music, anticipating further artistic growth and brilliance from this remarkable artist.

Ashley Judd, Aloe Blacc Help White House Unveil National Suicide Prevention Strategy: ‘There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Love’

Editor’s note: The following story includes discussions of suicide and sexual abuse.
Musicians Who Have Opened Up About Their Mental Health Struggles
Ashley Judd and Aloe Blacc, who’ve both been touched by the suicide of a loved one, visited the White House on Tuesday (April 23) to help the White House unveil its new national strategy to prevent suicide.
“As we all know, suicide affects everyone, it doesn’t matter your age, race, gender or where you live, it impacts all of us and sadly suicide and suicidal thoughts and actions have really increased over the past several years,” said Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, who hosted the event.
Trending on Billboard
Judd honored her beloved mother and described the Judds singers’ battle with mental illness, which she said was “lying to her and with great terror convinced her that it would never get better” during the discussion moderated by Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy that also featured Shelby Rowe, executive director of the Suicide Prevention Research Center. Judd spoke lovingly of her mother’s sense of humor and discovery of music as a child, but also noted that Naomi, 76, was a survivor of childhood and adult sexual violence who became a nurse and then a Grammy-winning country icon.
“She also lived most of her life with an untreated and undiagnosed mental illness that lied to her and stole from her and it stole from our family and she deserved better,” said Judd, who noted that she suffered from childhood depression and suicidal ideation after being molested when she was seven-years-old. “But I had a different experience because I went to treatment in 2006 for unresolved childhood grief and sexual trauma and I’ve been in good recovery for 18 years and I’ve had a different outcome than my mother.”
Blacc said he was on the dais because he has a strong belief in the “tremendous power of music to amplify these important messages” and because he’s learned to stand up for friends who self-harmed and lived as well as those who’ve not survived. “It’s important for all of us to recognize the power that we have,” he said. “So in knowing someone who may be going through a traumatic time and just being a stand for them could make the big difference.”
He encouraged everyone in the room and watching to recognize the positive role we can play in other people’s lives. “The more we can recognize and see and offer our friends and our family members that moment to say, ‘I need your help’ and you know it makes me think about those moments where you get the phone call and a friend of yours has committed self-harm and you think, ‘when was the last time I called? When was the last time I texted?'”
The singer urged everyone to search for a “moment of joy” when they reach out to friends in crisis, including memories that spark laughter or a song, as well as to remind people that they are “the light.” Blacc said, “there’s no such thing as too much love. Let’s give as much as we can,” he added, leading the assembled guests in the chorus from “This Little Light of Mine.”
The administration’s new 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention — accompanied by the first-ever federal action plan — identifies 200 different actions that will be implemented and evaluated over the next three years. Among those actions are: identifying ways to address substance use and suicide risk together in the clinical setting, funding a mobile crisis locator for use by 988 crisis centers, increasing support for survivors of suicide loss and others whose lives have been impacted by suicide, and evaluating promising community-based suicide prevention strategies.
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.

Ashley Judd, Aloe Blacc open up about deaths of Naomi Judd, Avicii in White House visit
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Ashley Judd and Aloe Blacc visited the White House on Tuesday to promote the Biden Administration's newly formed National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and federal action plan, speaking candidly about the deaths of Judd's mother, country-music star Naomi Judd , and Blacc's frequent collaborator Avicii .
"I've learned in recovery that I can pretend to care but I can't pretend to show up," Ashley Judd said on a panel discussion alongside Vivek Murthy, surgeon general of the U.S., and Shelby Rowe, executive director of the Suicide Prevention Research Center.
"I'm here because I am my beloved mother's daughter and on the day she died, which will be the two-year anniversary in one week, the disease of mental illness was lying to her and with great terror convinced her that it would never get better," Judd continued.
The actor and advocate said she firmly believes that "we deserve to be remembered not just for how we died but how we lived." She spoke about her mother's early days growing up in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky and how Naomi Judd loved "holding an audience's attention," and asserted that her mom "left country music better than she found it."

The 76-year-old country star died in April 2022, a day before mother-daughter duo the Judds — made up of Naomi and eldest daughter Wynnona — was inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame. The family initially said they lost her "to the disease of mental illness." Then, weeks later, Ashley Judd confirmed during a “Good Morning America” interview that her mother had used a gun to end her life.
On Tuesday, the "Divergent Series" alum noted again that Naomi Judd was a “survivor of childhood and adult male sexual violence” and became a nurse who sometimes relied on public assistance. She said her mother was fighting "an unseen disease" for most of her life and, "untreated and undiagnosed," it "stole from her and it stole from our family, and she deserved better."

The 56-year-old also opened up about her own mental health struggles and successes. She experienced childhood depression after being molested at age 7, she said, and, because of that she knew well the feeling of "not wanting to be here." However, she started treatment in 2006 for her unresolved childhood grief and sexual trauma.
"I've been in good recovery for 18 years and I've had a different outcome than my mother," the "All That Is Bitter and Sweet" memoirist said. "I carry a message of hope and recovery."
Judd said she relied on her "chosen family" to process her mother's death, as Aloe Blacc did with his own after Avicii's suicide .
The "I Need a Doll" and "The Man" hitmaker opened up about how he processed the death of the Swedish DJ, real name Tim Bergling, who died in 2018 .
"The outpouring of love that came from our community of fans was really helpful, helping me get through his passing," Blacc said. "The family and friends within our circle were also very, very helpful and supportive. Not everybody has that kind of support, and so of course I've got a unique experience."
