Travel insurance for Australia

Over one million Kiwis visit Australia every year. With white-sand beaches, dazzling harbours, lively cities and boundless room for adventure, it’s easy to see why. Our western neighbour has become a second home, and it’s rare to find a Kiwi who hasn’t bathed at Bondi Beach or shopped till they dropped in the malls of Melbourne.

While Australia has a reputation as an affordable holiday favourite, it also has a reputation as a place of danger. Whether it be sharks, jellyfish, rip currents, or just the scorching sun, an Australian beach escape can easily turn into a holiday to forget.

But it’s not just the beaches that present risks to travellers, which is why proper insurance is essential for your Australian holiday, no matter what part of the country you’re visiting.

Do New Zealanders need travel insurance for Australia?

New Zealanders enjoy a  reciprocal health agreement with Australia  for some healthcare services, like medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and access to prescription medicine.

There is a common misconception that this reciprocal health agreement means that New Zealanders don’t need travel insurance when visiting Australia. This is not the case. Emergency hospital treatment can quickly become extremely expensive, especially when it causes disruptions to your travel plans.

For example, a broken leg can mean an unwanted upgrade to business class seats, or prevent you from departing at all. Uninsured travellers can also find themselves footing the bill for ambulance rides, blood tests, accommodation extensions and flight cancellations.

We’ve seen first-hand how costly it can be to extend your stay due to a medical emergency, which is why we urge all New Zealanders to protect themselves with travel insurance when visiting Australia.

What will my insurance policy cover in Australia?

Our International Comprehensive policy provides comprehensive travel insurance for your trip to Australia. All International Comprehensive customers have access to our worldwide Emergency Assistance team, who can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our comprehensive International Comprehensive insurance includes cover for:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while on your journey
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits – increase your cover depending on the cost of your journey
  • Damaged or lost baggage
  • Personal items if they are stolen or damaged
  • Rental car excess should you have an accident
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Funeral costs

Does my policy cover medical emergencies and hospital bills?

Unfortunately, illness and injury make up the largest number of claims we receive from travellers to Australia.

Thankfully, our International Comprehensive policy insures you for unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while you’re in Australia.

Am I covered for stolen or damaged phones, cameras and laptops?

Behind illness and injury, stolen and damaged valuables are the second most common claim we see from travellers to Australia. You may expect pickpocketing to be a greater risk in the marketplaces of South-East Asia than in the modern cities of Sydney or Melbourne, however travellers should keep their guard up as Australia isn’t immune to petty thieves.

Stolen valuables can take the shine off any holiday, which is why our International Comprehensive policy covers you for personal items that are lost, stolen or damaged as a result from an unexpected event.

Am I insured for rental vehicle excess?

Australia has enough endless highways and scenic coast routes to satisfy any traveller with a taste for the open road. In fact, travelling by car from Sydney to Perth takes over 40 hours of driving time!

Your Aussie road trip may not be this extreme, but it’s important that you prepare carefully even for short journeys on the road. Our International Comprehensive policy covers you for rental vehicle excess of up to $10,000 per paying person if you have an accident, but your cover depends on a few things including:

  • That you or the driver obey any law including driving laws or highway rules. For example: speed limits and blood alcohol limits
  • That you hire your vehicle from a licensed rental vehicle agency
  • That you always comply with the terms of the rental vehicle agreement
  • That you only drive on formed or paved roads and car parks
  • You are a named driver on the policy

Travel insurance for New Zealand during COVID-19

The trans-tasman bubble is open, so what does travel insurance cover when travelling to new zealand.

Airplane flying over water while in a clear bubble.

Fact-checked

Checked for accuracy by our qualified fact-checkers and verifiers. Find out more about fact-checking at CHOICE .

Stock images:  Getty, unless otherwise stated.

After more than a year, Australia’s borders have opened for a travel bubble with New Zealand.  And some travel insurers offer limited cover if your travel plans get interrupted by COVID-19.

But these international travel insurance policies only cover you for travel to New Zealand while a government travel ban still prevents you from travelling anywhere else without an exemption.

On this page:

Do you need travel insurance for New Zealand?

Will travel insurance provide cover for covid-19 in new zealand, will travel insurance cover skiing in new zealand, checklist for your new zealand holiday.

Travel insurance is essential for Australians travelling to New Zealand. Buy your insurance at the same time as you book your trip, that way you'll be covered if you have to cancel for some reason before you go.

Medical costs in New Zealand

New Zealand and Australia have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, meaning that Australian travellers can access New Zealand's public health service in an emergency, and vice versa.

You'll still have to pay some fees for treatment and medication and it's important to remember the agreement isn't a replacement for travel insurance.

Remember to take your Medicare card with you

For example, reciprocal health care does not cover you for free or subsidised care by a GP or ambulance, and if you get seriously ill, medical repatriation is very expensive and only covered by travel insurance.

Remember to take your Medicare card with you – you'll need it, along with your passport, to prove that you're eligible.

Accident cover in New Zealand

In New Zealand, accident victims cannot sue a third party for compensation. Instead, the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) covers the cost of medical care within New Zealand.

This means it's essential that visitors to New Zealand are covered by travel insurance for repatriation, loss of income and disruptions to travel plans as you won't be compensated for those even if the other person was 100% at fault.

Note: Because of the ACC fund, CTP car insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand, as it is in Australia. However, it's still recommended and travel insurance can reduce the excess on the insurance your car hire company offers you.

Earthquake cover in New Zealand

New Zealand sometimes experiences severe seismic activity. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake claimed 185 lives and levelled much of the city centre.

Safety campaigns in New Zealand advise you to 'drop, cover and hold' – drop to the ground, take cover and hold on – in the event of an earthquake. See getready.govt.nz for more specific advice.

And read your travel insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) to see if you're covered for medical and cancellation for natural disasters

Some travel insurers, for example, Qantas (NIB), Virgin (Cover-More) or Medibank (Zurich), now offer travel insurance policies with limited cover against COVID-19. But they don't cover you if there's a general government travel ban, quarantine or border closure.

They normally provide cover for medical expenses should you contract COVID-19 and may cover travel delays or cancellations if you, your travelling partner, or a close relative contract COVID-19 before or during your travel.

You may also be covered if your accommodation, such as a ski resort, closes because of a COVID-19 outbreak or you have to go into quarantine because you were a close contact of someone who contracted COVID-19.

There are also other exclusions, especially for cruises and pre-existing conditions, so you need to read the insurer's PDS carefully to check what you're covered for.

Things can change quickly, flights can get cancelled and places can go into lockdown if an outbreak happens. You need to be prepared for your travel plans to be interrupted at short notice.

As travel insurance won't protect you from government border closures or general lockdowns, the key is to book with providers that allow flexibility should things change.

  • Check the rules for travelling to New Zealand .
  • Consider going to just one or a few places at a time rather than travelling around.
  • Read the terms and conditions before you book.
  • Book flexible tickets for flights. Read more about COVID-19 refunds from airlines .
  • Make sure your hotel booking can be cancelled or changed.
  • If you book through a travel agent or booking site, make sure they don't charge an extra cancellation fee. Read more about travel agent cancellations for COVID-19 .
  • Consider booking at the last minute so you're up to date with the latest travel restrictions.
  • Pay by credit card, as this allows you to pursue a chargeback if something goes wrong.
  • Keep on top of the latest travel advice for New Zealand .

Many insurers will cover you for standard skiing and snowboarding, but some offer it as an optional extra and some have special conditions.

Before getting insurance for a ski holiday, make sure it will cover you for your specific skiing or snowboarding destination, as well as for the activities you intend to do.

For example, off-piste (backcountry) skiing or snowboarding is often not covered, and when it is covered, it's usually only if you're still within the resort boundaries or skiing with a guide.

The same goes for riding on a snowmobile, which tends to be an optional cover – check directly with insurers as some may only cover riding a snowmobile if you're using it as a mode of transport rather than recreationally.

  • If you're planning on skiing, bungee jumping or doing anything else potentially bone-breaking, make sure your insurance covers it. You'll often need to purchase extra cover.
  • Check if your passport is still valid, and if not, renew your passport online .
  • Take your Medicare card with you.
  • Keep a printout of your travel insurance details with you at all times while on your trip. It's also a good idea to share your insurance details with family or friends before you leave.

Most Common Questions

Our Gold policies cover your rental car excess up to $8,000, but not motorbikes. For a rental car to be covered, you need to make sure that it is insured (confirmed by the rental company), as we do not pay for full damages to a rental car, only your excess.

Yes, we cover all overseas medical expenses (unlimited), as well as permanent injury, and personal liability (policy payout limits apply to these) as related to bungee jumping, so long as you limit yourself to a maximum of three jumps.

A pre-existing medical condition is any condition for which you have received medical advice, treatment or medication in the last five years. Our policies cover many pre-existing conditions; to see if we cover yours, please complete our medical assessment online or over the phone. Please note, failing to declare a pre-existing condition can void your policy.

Our premiums would be astronomical if we could do that! There are limits and exclusions to all travel insurance policies, so we strongly advise you to read our product disclosure statement.

Under the InsureandGo Silver and Gold levels of cover, we will reimburse the cost of your necessary additional meals and accommodation expenses, if during a trip, any individual leg of your trip, is delayed for more than 12 hours, as long as you eventually go on the holiday.

The amount you can claim varies depending on the level of cover that you have purchased with us. Please refer to the policy wording documents for more information.

Excess is the amount you pay us in the event of a claim being approved. Our excess applies per person, per event, per claim. You can choose the excess you want ($100, $200, $0), but be aware this will change the price of your initial premium. Our standard excess amount is $100 but you can decide to remove or double this amount through the purchase process.

You need to be in Australia at the time of purchasing your insurance. If you are overseas, we are unable to offer you new or different insurance. You may be eligible to extend the dates of your existing cover, so shoot us an email and find out.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

How much does travel insurance for New Zealand cost?

It's a fact that the cost of travel insurance can vary enormously. A 30-year-old travelling to New Zealand for a two-week holiday can expect to pay anywhere between $25 - $150 depending on the level of cover purchased. Generally speaking, Basic (also known as medical-only policies) range from $25 – $50, Mid-level policies approx $40 – $100 and Comprehensive from $50 - $150.

Reciprocal healthcare  benefits

Lucky for us Aussies, New Zealand and Australia share reciprocal healthcare agreements. That means you have access to government medical facilities and care. Travellers to New Zealand who are injured in an accident are also covered for hospital treatment by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides compulsory insurance cover for personal injury for everyone in New Zealand, whether a citizen, resident or visitor. This means if you are injured by an accident in New Zealand, ACC may pay some of your medical and rehabilitation costs. No-fault cover means it doesn't matter what you were doing when you were injured or who was at fault. The ACCC cover you, as long as the injury falls within their legislation.  Take note that these agreements do not provide ongoing treatment of existing health conditions and charges may still apply for visits to GPs and specialists, prescription medications and diagnostic tests.

WHAT DOES new zealand  TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER?

medical-assistance

24/7 Medical assistance

As an adventure sports hub, New Zealand sees its fair share of nasty injuries. Whilst you may be eligible for reciprocal health care in New Zealand, this would not cover any additional accommodation costs, flights for family members or medical repatriation to Australia. Travel insurance can help to cover these costs should the worst-case scenario occur.

cancellation cover

Cancellation cover

Travel insurance will cover unforeseen cancellations for events such as natural disasters, as well as accidents, hijackings, severe sickness or injury. Travel insurance will cover the costs of medical attention as well as the reasonable additional expenses caused by the rescheduling of travel plans.

cancellation

Lost or damaged Luggage

Has a lone sheep just chewed up your camera? Your travel insurance policy will reimburse you for lost, stolen or damaged luggage. Comprehensive cover also includes cover for theft of cash and travel documents too.

No hidden fees

Travel delays

If your flight is delayed or you have to cancel your trip you may get reimbursed by your travel insurance provider. Generally, your flight has to be delayed by over 24 hours for you to receive travel delay reimbursement. Although it is the airline's responsibility to get you on the next flight if the delay is through a fault of their own.

family emergency

Family emergency

It's always a worry going on holiday leaving loved ones behind. Never fear, should a close relative, or the person you’re travelling with become seriously ill, injured or heaven-forbid die, your travel expenses would be claimable. Restrictions can apply for relatives age, medical conditions and where they live.

personal liability

Personal liability

If you injure someone or are held accountable for damaged property in New Zealand (like crashing your hire car into a parked car for example) the consequences would be less than stellar. In such an event, your policy will cover your liability costs to a degree.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance during the coronavirus pandemic..

Coronavirus has made it tricky to travel the world and on top of that many insurance companies have distanced themselves from providing cover during the pandemic. But there’s a solution.

Australia & New Zealand Travel Company is working with a reputable insurance provider that’s one of the very few insurers still supporting travellers. You can be covered for some of the coronavirus-related risks and make it possible to enjoy exploring Australia and New Zealand during these Covid-19 times.

A snapshot of the top Covid-19 travel insurance benefits

You can now get travel insurance with cover for many coronavirus-related expenses. For peace of mind when travelling, speak to your travel consultant today about the new domestic policies.

Then you’ll be free to book and enjoy your trip, knowing you have travel insurance benefits that cover some of the unexpected situations caused by Covid-19.

Here’s a brief summary of the best insurance benefits for Covid-19 travel that will come as standard with your policy. The policy does not cover snap border closure expenses, but does cover all of the below:

Coronavirus cancellations

Premium domestic travel plans automatically include cancellation cover up to $10,000 and you can add the amount of cancellation cover you require to your new international or inbound travel insurance policy and you’ll be covered for a range of costs arising from coronavirus-related changes and cancellations that couldn’t be anticipated.

Expenses & delays

If your travel plans have to change or your trip is cut short for a range of reasons related to Covid-19, new international and domestic travel insurance plans include cover for many of the cost typically involved. If your trip is within Australia or New Zealand, cover is provided for unexpected coronavirus-related disruptions to special events and travel delays

A guide for insurance policy prices

To give you an indication of how much travel insurance can cost, the below policy prices are based on the average fees for 14 days travel.

If your tour is longer than 14 days or you are over 79 years of age, please call us for a quotation.

If you intend to travel overseas, the new inbound and international plans are ready for the increase in travel as soon as government restrictions ease. If a qualified medical practitioner diagnoses you with coronavirus while you’re travelling, the new plans could help with the cost of the overseas medical treatment that you receive.

Call us on 1300 168 910 for information about travel insurance options and booking conditions .

A closer look at coronavirus travel insurance options

Here’s a handy summary of the cover each of the Covid-19 travel insurance benefits provides:

Insurance for Covid-19 travel cancellation and amendment costs

We always recommend getting your travel insurance policy as soon as possible after making your bookings. This is now more important in the current environment. $10,000 cancellation cover is included on premium domestic travel plans and can be added to international and inbound travel insurance policies. Buying travel insurance soon after you book gives immediate cover for many costs if your arrangements are cancelled or changed due to Covid-19.

Here are the main Covid-19 situations included in this cover:

Your personal circumstances are affected by Covid-19: •    You can’t depart for your trip because you have been diagnosed with Covid-19 by a qualified medical practitioner •    You’re an essential healthcare worker and Covid-19 has caused your leave to be cancelled •    An Australian or New Zealand resident business partner or relative, who is not travelling with you, has been diagnosed with a life-threatening infection of Covid-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and you have to change or cancel your trip

Your host’s circumstances are affected by Covid-19: •    If you can no longer stay with someone as planned in Australia or New Zealand, because they have been diagnosed with Covid-19 by a qualified medical practitioner or required to quarantine by their public health authority, we provide up to $150 a night for alternative accommodation   Your prepaid expenses in Australia or New Zealand are affected, for example: •    Your prepaid accommodation is closed for deep-cleaning after a coronavirus outbreak •    The venue of a prepaid experience is closed due to possible Covid-19 contamination

Travel insurance with overseas coronavirus medical cover

Many Australians need or want to travel overseas, but are concerned about what it could cost if they become infected with coronavirus while in another country. To help you travel to where government restrictions allow, our travel insurance can provide cover for medical expenses related to Covid-19.

If you’re diagnosed with Covid-19 by a qualified medical practitioner during your overseas travel, while you are suffering from the infection our cover includes: •    Medical treatment costs •    Ambulance costs Our Covid-19 travel insurance does not provide medical cover if: •    Your claim involves a multi-night cruise •    You visit any part of a country while it has a ‘do not travel’ rating from Smartraveller

Travel insurance for extra Covid-19 costs

Travel has always come with surprises – some good, some not so good. Travel insurance exists to cover most unexpected challenges and this continues in today’s world, where there’s the potential for a wide range of costs to arise from Covid-19. In addition to travel cancellation and medical costs mentioned above, our new international and domestic travel insurance policies can provide cover for extra expenses you have to pay. Here are the main situations included in this cover:

Your personal circumstances are affected by coronavirus: •    You’re diagnosed with Covid-19 while on your trip •    A public health authority requires you to quarantine or isolate Cover for these two situations is not available if: •    Your trip has included a multiple night cruise at any stage •    You visited any part of a country while it had a ‘do not travel’ rating from Smartraveller A business partner or relative is diagnosed with coronavirus: •    An Australian or New Zealand resident business partner or relative, who is not travelling with you, has been diagnosed with a life-threatening infection of Covid-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and you have to return home

Your host or prepaid accommodation is affected by coronavirus •    You can no longer stay with someone as planned in Australia or New Zealand because they have been diagnosed with Covid-19 or required to quarantine •    Your prepaid accommodation is closed for deep-cleaning after a coronavirus outbreak

Exclusions that apply to this coronavirus travel cover

To get a clear picture of what can and can’t be covered during the Covid-19 pandemic, we strongly recommend you’re fully informed before you buy travel insurance cover. It’s important to realise that some of the coronavirus travel insurance benefits only apply if you are travelling within Australia and New Zealand.

Here’s a quick summary of scenarios will not be covered, if they arise from or are caused by Covid-19: •    Will not help with costs or expenses related to cross area, border, region or territory travel if they are a result of a mandatory quarantine or isolation order enforced by a government or public health authority •    If your destination has a ‘do not travel’ warning on the Smartraveller website , cover doesn’t apply •    Cover is not provided for claims related to government directed border closures •    Insurance won’t help if your claim arises from the threat – or perceived threat – of Covid-19

Please note: Your circumstances including age, location, medical condition or issue, proximity to appropriate medical care and medical history will be considered when applying for travel insurance and subject to approval.  Cover is subject to conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits of the policy. Travel On Demand Pty Ltd (ABN 11 642 241 914) trading as Australia & New Zealand Travel Company, distributes these insurance products for Easy Travel Insurance which is administered by Cover-More Insurance Services Pty Ltd (Cover-More) ABN 95 003 114 145, AFSL 241713) and issued by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited (ABN 13 000 296 640, AFSL 232507). Any advice provided is general advice only. Please consider your financial situation, needs and objectives and read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before deciding to buy this insurance. For disputes, changes, cancellation or any questions, please contact the insurance provider directly. Policies may not be available to all travellers. Limits, sub-limits, conditions, exclusions and fees apply. Australia & New Zealand Travel Company receives commission for insurance policies sold.

Destinations

What you need to know

  • If you are coming to Australia, a handful of providers offer inbound travel insurance policies .
  • You can take out policies for family members coming to Australia as well.
  • Travel insurance can cover things like medical expenses, flight cancellations and personal liability – it is not the same as OVHC.

*When looking for cover, make sure to read any guidelines in the PDS to ensure you qualify for the policy. Most insurers have limitations when it comes to covering pre-existing medical conditions for visitors to Australia. Note: This information was last updated August 2023

Travel insurance for overseas visitors, sometimes called inbound travel insurance, is for non-Australian residents who plan to travel to Australia.

For example, if you are currently in the Phillipines and want cover for when you are in Australia, including the inbound flight, this type of policy can cover you. It can also cover family members – for example, if you're currently living in Australia and want to cover a family member travelling to see you.

Inbound travel insurance is not the same as Overseas Visitor Health Cover . This is a type of health insurance you often need if you are coming to work in Australia on a visa.

Can non-residents get regular travel insurance?

If you don't live in Australia, you will need to get inbound travel insurance – it's a type of policy designed for non-residents. However, if you're a temporary or permanent resident in Australia, you should be able to get regular travel insurance. I was able to do this as temporary resident when I first moved to Australia from Scotland.

Travel insurance for overseas visitors includes similar benefits to international travel insurance policies, such as:

  • Medical care. Cover if you need medical care while you're in Australia. Emergencies are often unexpected and expensive, so don't let you or your family get caught out.
  • Interruption. Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. Whether you lose your job or are diagnosed with an illness, the long journey means that flights to Australia can be pretty expensive. Travel insurance policies reimburse you for the money you are otherwise not able to get back.
  • Belongings. You're travelling such a long way so the last thing you want is to be stuck in Australia without your luggage. If your luggage and belongings are lost, stolen or damaged on your trip, your insurance policy will provide cover for the cost of their repair or replacement. Similarly, if an airline misplaces your luggage or it is delayed, cover is available to help you buy essential clothing and toiletries.
  • Theft. Australia is a generally safe country but theft can occur anywhere, especially if you're planning on exploring different parts of the country. Travel insurance looks after you if your cash, credit cards, passport or important travel documents are stolen.
  • Accidents. If you're planning a road trip, rental vehicle excess cover makes sure you don't have to pay the excess on the rental vehicle if something goes wrong. Travel insurance for visitors to Australia can also include personal liability . If an accident occurs and you are legally liable to pay for the costs, this can reimburse you up to the limit specified on your policy.
  • Travel insurance for overseas students
  • Inbound travel insurance
  • Long term visitors
  • Health insurance for Australian visa holders

Typical conditions and eligibilty requirements for non-resident travel insurance include:

  • Most of your time must be spent in Australia. You can travel to other destinations for a short time but most of your trip must be spent in Australia.
  • Pre-existing conditions. Not all pre-existing medical conditions will be covered by insurers. Some may be automatically excluded and for others, you may be required to submit further information detailing the nature of your condition.
  • Age limits. Non-resident travel insurance will generally have an age limit on people who can take out cover. For example, many policies stop offering cover if you are under the age of 80.

What is the best travel insurance for visitors to australia.

The best travel insurance for visitors to Australia depends on your needs. However, you will probably need inbound travel insurance because this covers non-residents travelling to Australia for a short stay. If you live and reside in Australia – for example, you're on a visa, you should be eligible for any type of travel insurance.

Is it possible to purchase a travel insurance policy once you're already in Australia?

Yes, it is. You can purchase cover before you leave home or once you arrive in Australia. If you purchase cover when you're already in Australia, you may have to serve a brief waiting period (commonly 48 hours) before certain aspects of the cover will take effect.

Will my children be covered?

Most non-resident travel insurance policies can also cover your dependent children, often for no additional charge.

When can I buy a policy?

You can buy a policy online as soon as you book your trip. If you forget to get cover and have already arrived in Australia, some insurers will still let you buy a policy if you buy it within a few days of arrival.

Will I be covered for trips outside of Australia?

There are some insurers who will cover you for trips outside of Australia but the majority of your time must be spent in Australia.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for New Zealand?

New Zealand does not require visitors to have travel insurance to enter the country. But it is recommended if your health insurance does not extend to emergency treatment abroad.

Framed by forested mountains, volcanoes, glaciers and beaches, New Zealand is known for its natural wonder. But considering the country’s vast landscape and unpredictable weather, it can take hours to reach remote places in an emergency. Whether you’re hiking, mountain biking or snowboarding, travel insurance can reimburse the cost of medical care in case of injury.

New Zealand extends some health care coverage to temporary visitors with its Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) Program . However, the program may not cover all medical costs. Purchasing travel insurance can further protect you from financial burdens by offering additional medical coverage.

The weather in New Zealand is notoriously volatile , with extremes at each end of the year. Due to its geographical position, New Zealand is prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Such events could cause trip cancellations or travel delays. Travel insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses (like your flight or hotel) if you experience an interruption due to severe weather.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage allows you flexibility to cancel your trip for reasons outside those predetermined by your travel insurance policy. However, since CFAR coverage is considered a policy add-on, it is more expensive than a standard policy.

This type of coverage is also subject to disclaimers, deductibles and restrictions. You must meet certain requirements to qualify for CFAR insurance, including:

  • You have to cancel your trip within a certain timeframe, like at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You only have a specific number of days after booking your trip to buy CFAR coverage. Most insurance providers have a limit of 10 to 21 days after booking.

You may want to bring cameras, sporting gear or other valuables if you’re planning to explore New Zealand’s diverse destinations. Whether you want to photograph the rich Maori culture or mountain bike through the forest, gear theft protection can help recoup the cost of lost or stolen goods.

Each travel insurance policy will include specific coverage limits and exclusions regarding stolen or damaged gear. Gear theft protection is worth considering if you wish to bring the following on your trip:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sporting equipment (like a surfboard or kayak)

Note that your insurance may not cover the full value of your items, so review the policy wording and product disclosure statement carefully to determine your coverage. If the total of the items you plan to bring exceeds your benefit limit, consider leaving some items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Although the ACC offers some medical coverage to non-residents, the program does not always cover the full cost of treatment. If your health insurance does not extend coverage in other countries, you can safeguard yourself with travel insurance for medical emergencies .

Travel medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses in the event of an injury or illness. Most providers also cover evacuation to your home country if you can’t receive health care locally and repatriation if you die while traveling.

A standard travel insurance policy may include the following medical emergency and assistance coverage:

  • Hospital admission costs
  • Surgical operations and related fees
  • Ambulance costs
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Emergency dental fees

When booking your trip insurance, be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like asthma or high blood pressure. While some providers do not extend coverage for pre-existing conditions, others may offer a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver.

Travel medical insurance also may not extend to injuries sustained as a result of extreme sports, but some providers may offer add-on coverage. Read your policy’s full details for restrictions and exclusions.

Rental Car Protection

New Zealand boasts an extensive network of public transport, making it easy to travel around big cities like Auckland and Wellington. But you may prefer to rent a car to explore on your own schedule.

As a tourist, you can legally drive for up to 12 months in New Zealand as long as you have a current driver’s license. If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need to obtain an English translation. Otherwise, you can opt for an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) issued or written in English.

New Zealand requires rental car companies to include basic insurance for coverage against accidents. The level of protection varies by provider, but usually covers the following:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Windshield protection
  • Roadside protection
  • Theft protection

The insurance will include an excess or deductible or the amount of money you pay before the insurance policy covers the costs. Your rental car provider may offer a daily fee in exchange for reducing or eliminating the excess.

For example, let’s say that your rental car agreement offers a standard policy with a $1,000 excess. If your rental vehicle is damaged and costs $3,000 to repair, you’ll only need to pay the $1,000. As long as you’ve met the terms and conditions in your contract, the rental company will cover the remaining $2,000.

While you can purchase travel insurance with rental car protection, it may not be necessary for a trip to New Zealand. Consider existing rental car coverage before adding more with a travel insurance policy.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Whether it’s extreme weather or natural disasters, unexpected circumstances can impact your trip to New Zealand. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable costs like your flight, hotel or travel excursions if you have to cancel your trip due to the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury or military duty

How Much Does New Zealand Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, personal details and travel logistics. Some providers offer single-trip plans for a one-time visit or annual multi-trip coverage if you travel more often.

Cheap travel insurance options are available if you are on a budget. To receive a quote from a provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your country of residence
  • Age and the number of travelers
  • Trip duration
  • Total trip price

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to New Zealand. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to New Zealand for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

Each of the above insurance plans includes the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption (including travel delays)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Emergency medical care
  • COVID-19 -related medical care and trip cancellation

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for New Zealand?

Before you buy travel insurance for your New Zealand trip, check to see if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers some level of coverage. If you have private health insurance, it may include coverage for international travel and medical emergencies. Or you might have flight, rental car or other form of travel insurance through your credit card.

We recommend requesting a free quote from at least three travel insurance companies. Be sure to compare various trip insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, emergency assistance and trip cancellation. Make sure your chosen travel insurance covers what you need. Carefully review policy wording for exclusions and consider add-ons to cover additional expenses.

New Zealand Safety Tips

According to the Global Peace Index , New Zealand is ranked as the second-safest country in the world. But crime can still happen while traveling. We’ve included the below information and travel tips to help you safely navigate New Zealand.

Crime and Safety

New Zealand is considered a safe destination for travelers, but it is not crime-free. Be careful not to leave valuables in campervans or parked cars near trailheads or tourist spots. When in the big cities, avoid walking alone late at night or in unlit alleyways.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

With fjords, dormant volcanoes and hidden beaches, New Zealand boasts a diversity of day trips. But don’t overestimate your ability or underestimate the risks of exploring the great outdoors. Plan your adventures ahead of time, use a local guide or tourist service if necessary, and be sure to research the destination and weather.

Some tourists may also plan to visit both New Zealand and Australia on the same trip. If you purchase travel insurance, check to make sure your policy covers travel to multiple destinations.

As of January 2023, New Zealand has lifted all pandemic-related restrictions . International travelers are not required to provide a vaccination passport or negative PCR test to enter the country. You are not required to wear a mask on public transport but may still encounter mask advisories in medical facilities or other buildings.

You will be required to self-isolate for seven days if you contract the coronavirus while in New Zealand.

Is Travel Insurance for a New Zealand Vacation Worth It?

It’s ultimately up to you to decide if travel insurance is worth it for your New Zealand vacation. Standard travel insurance can offer coverage for unexpected trip cancellations, lost baggage , flight postponements and other travel inconveniences. Although New Zealand offers some medical coverage for foreigners, the country will not always cover the full cost of your care. Travel insurance can extend emergency medical coverage if you are hurt or get sick while abroad.

If you opt for a more comprehensive travel insurance plan, you can consider add-on options like CFAR coverage, rental car damage or sporting gear protection for added peace of mind.

A cruise ship sounds about the safest holiday environment you could choose – but even in these self-contained cities on the sea, something can go wrong. When RACV member John* had a stroke while on a cruise in New Zealand and needed to be medevaced home to Australia, he faced a huge bill. By the time medical transportation, additional emergency expenses and cancellation of the unused part of his trip were taken into account, the out-of-pocket costs came to $81,000.

Such a bill could have been life-changing - in a bad way. Fortunately, John had taken out RACV Travel Insurance, which covered the total amount.

John’s experience illustrates that whether you are travelling to New Zealand on a cruise with the family, an adventure break on the South Island or a self-drive holiday, there are some important questions to consider before you go to the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Do Australians need travel insurance for New Zealand?

Cover for hospital treatment and medical expenses in foreign countries is one of the main reasons people take out travel insurance. Knowing this, many Australian travellers ask whether they really need to take out travel insurance for a trip to New Zealand because the two countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.

But what does a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement actually mean and what does your Australian Medicare card cover you for in New Zealand?

Reciprocal medical cover provides urgent medical treatment for Australian citizens or residents with a Medicare card while they are in New Zealand. But the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement does not cover:

  • Treatment received on a cruise ship
  • Evacuation costs
  • Repatriation costs
  • Medical transport costs

You can see there are a number of situations where travel insurance might be needed even in New Zealand. And there’s more…

Does RACV travel insurance cover car and campervan hire in New Zealand

Self-drive holidays are one of the most popular ways to explore New Zealand. But if you’re planning to hire a rental car, campervan or motorhome, there are several things you need to be aware of, particularly rental car excess insurance, which is included in some RACV travel insurance policies.

  • Know how much your excess is. The excess is the amount payable if your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. Check whether there is an additional excess if your car is involved in a single vehicle accident.
  • RACV Rental Car Excess will cover you for the rental vehicle insurance excess or the cost of repairs - whichever is the lower amount. However, it does not replace rental vehicle insurance.
  • Read your rental terms and conditions. These may include limits on when and where you can drive the rental vehicle. RACV Rental Car Excess will not cover you if you violate your rental agreement.
  • Is there an age restriction? Many rental companies impose maximum or minimum age limits and rules. Check the details before you arrive to avoid any nasty surprises.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to New Zealand

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for New Zealand. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in New Zealand can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins.
