Artists Who Are Going On Tour In 2024: The Rolling Stones, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo & More

The year is just getting started, but 2024 is already stacked with exciting tours. Open up your calendar and start planning with this sprawling list of announced 2024 tours.

Just a couple of years ago, live music still looked uncertain — would variant X, Y or Z derail the train for the umpteenth time? But in that regard, 2023 felt almost totally in the clear — and that's why it feels like the rubber band is stretched back for 2024, and it's ready to launch.

Sure, compiling every musical act who's touring in 2024 might be impossible. But GRAMMY.com's stylistic purview is far and wide: country, hardcore, soul, R&B, rap, indie rock, you name it. As such, we're giving it our best shot — and will continue to update the list as more tours are announced.

Without further ado, here's a major cross section of the 2024 touring landscape as currently announced — from Alvvays to Adam Ant , from Def Leppard to Danny Brown.

Chappell Roan's Big Year: The 'Midwest Princess' Examines How She Became A Pop "Feminomenon"

Just after Chappell Roan made her festival debut at Coachella, hear from the pop starlet about some of the defining moments of her career thus far — and how it all helped earn her a spot at one of music's biggest fests.

Before this year, Chappell Roan had never even been to Coachella. Now, not only can she say she's attended — she's performed in the desert, too.

Roan played an evening set on the Gobi Stage on April 12, and is set to return for Weekend 2. Fans clad in everything from cowboy boots, Sandy Liang-inspired bows and, perhaps most importantly, jorts, gathered to celebrate their shared love of Roan's radiance, karmic kink and gay cowgirl doctrine.

Throughout her performance, bubbles breezed through the air as Roan belted out her infectious (and aptly titled) track "Femininomenon," which speaks to lover girls forced to live in an online-dating hellscape. "Ladies, you know what I mean?/ And you know what you need and so does he/ But does it happen? No!" Following collective screams of pure joy, the already enlivened crowd roused to match Roan beat-for-beat, shouting back in perfect unison, "Well, what we really need is a femininomenon!"

In an era of bedroom pop and sad-girl music, Roan has been hailed by both critics and fans for bringing fun back to pop music. Along with her staunch sense of self, Roan's penchant for explicit lyrics that are equally parts introspective and horny makes her dance-pop anthems all the more infectious.

Roan's ambitiously experimental debut album, 2023's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess , cemented her status as one of the most exciting pop stars on the rise. While she only recently landed her first single on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Good Luck, Babe!," her rapidly growing fan base — and an opening slot on Olivia Rodrigo's sold-out GUTS World Tour — indicate that she's on her way to superstardom .

Perhaps part of Roan's magic is that it was all on her own terms. After parting ways with her first label, Atlantic Records, she built a loyal following as an independent artist before signing with Island Records last year. Even as a major label artist, she's determined to only do things her way; her indefatigable commitment to her craft — as well as writing her own rules when it comes to fashion and makeup — is precisely why her fans are so enraptured by both her music and persona.

Her fearlessness was on full display during her first Coachella set, where the words emblazoned on her bodysuit read "Eat Me." She talks the talk, and walks the walk (in fabulous, knee-high boots, of course), matching her unabashed aesthetic with equally bold career moves; for one, the openers for her headlining tour are local drag queens.

With eyeliner winged to the heavens, near-perfect vocal stability and fiery curls ablaze, Roan's shimmering Coachella Weekend 1 performance proved that her stage presence is equally dynamic. And if she had any doubters, she had one thing to say to them: "B—, I know you're watching!"

In between rehearsals for her Coachella debut, Roan took a look back on her journey to one of music's most coveted stages. Below, hear from Roan about five of the most impactful milestones in her career — so far.

Releasing Her Debut Album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess

I ended up signing [with Island Records in 2023] because this project honestly got too big to be independent anymore. I just wasn't willing to give up anything, any creative control or for any amount of money.

Being an independent artist was really special because I proved to myself that I could do all these hard things that I had never done. I built it with an entire friend group and many, many years of work. So it wasn't just me, but it proved a lot to me.

It proved I can make it through hard circumstances — with no money. You truly can. You do not need a label to do a lot of what an artist's career requires. You don't need a label to put on your own show, or make a music video, or even write a song, or find creative people. You don't need that s—t. I mean, a label is just money, you know? You don't need a lot of money to do this. To make it grow is, I think, where it takes a lot of money. That's what was difficult.

Music allows me to express anything, even things that I've never experienced before. It allows me to express queerness, even if it was only daydreams at that point. It allows me to express parts of me that I'm not even ready to accept yet.

I don't give a f— if you don't  f— with the music. You don't have to come to the concert. That's the whole point of it. You don't have to like it. I think throughout the year, I'm like, "What can I get away with?" Because right now it's pretty tame for what it is like to be a gay artist. But I just want to push it to see how far can I go — with the most controversial outfits or things to rile people up. I'm not really afraid to do that.

Having a song [like "Casual] with the lyric, "Knee deep in the passenger seat/ And you're eating me out," and it's being considered to go to radio. That's kind of a big thing to get away with.

It's not even that big of a thing. What's that song? Is it Flo Rida ? That's like, "Can you blow my whistle, baby/ whistle baby." Okay, that's obviously about like a f—ing blowjob. [ Laughs .] No one cares about that. To me, I'm like, Let's talk about eating out on the radio . I actually think it has to be bleeped, but still, if I can get away with it, that's cool.

Feeling Financial Freedom & Stability

Not making money at all just sucked. But I learned how to do my own makeup and bedazzle and sew a little bit. I think that the scrappiness came from [the idea that] it's scrappy if it's fun.

I think that's what kept me going — because if this wasn't fun, I would not even be here. But it was scrappy and fun, and it was with my friends. It didn't feel dire. I was also just working at a coffee shop, and I was a nanny, and I was working at a donut shop. I was doing part time jobs all on the side too. So it was all just rough [in the beginning].

I have freedom because now [singing] is my full-time job. It provides for me now. As the project grows, I can do bigger shows and be like, I want outfit changes now , and I want more lights, and I want confetti . I can afford confetti now!

It's about expanding the universe in a thoughtful way. And not just like throwing a s— ton of money at things to make things look expensive or wear all this designer s— for no reason.

I just try to look at how we are starting to gain momentum financially and see how can I intentionally use that to, one, pay the team in a way where they're not bare bones anymore, and two, [ask ourselves] how can we honor this project and this album and the queer community? Can we pay drag queens more? Can we bring drag on the road? Now, financially, doors have opened where we can walk through them with love and intention. Just recklessly, throwing money at s— to see if it works.

Opening Olivia Rodrigo's Arena Tour

Olivia [Rodrigo] just asked. It was official, we went through our management. But I was like, Oh my God .

Preparing a 40-minute set is a different vibe than headlining, obviously. You are going out to an audience that is not there for you and doesn't necessarily care if you're there or not.

This is, like, my fourth or fifth artist I've opened for. But for an arena tour, I just needed to gather my nerves. I think that's the difference between any other show. Like, F—, there's 20,000 people out there right now. I've never performed in front of that many people. I don't know what this emotion is, and I just have to tame it right now.

Standing Up For Herself Creatively, Even When There's Pushback

I stand up for myself, I would say, every day. Sometimes, you get this opportunity, a huge opportunity with a lot of money on the table. [Yet,] I'm just like, That just doesn't make sense creatively. That doesn't align with my values. I'm not doing that.

One huge creative decision was I stood up and pushed the entire headlining Midwest Princess tour back to the fall. The album was supposed to come out while we were on tour. I was like, "This is a horrible idea!"

That caused a big ruckus, but it ended up being fine, and I was right. I'm usually right. [ Laughs .] It's like a mother with her kid — a mother knows best. I feel like [that] when it comes to the integrity of my project.

I know how it is to not be able to afford a ticket or even f—ing food. A concert ticket, a lot of times, means multiple meals for someone. I get it, I couldn't afford some artists' tickets. That's why it's really important to me to try to keep them as low as I can and my merch as low as I can.

There's pushback of ticket prices being low and we're playing rooms that are so expensive. The fee to even play them is so expensive. So, you have to raise the ticket prices to just even be able to afford to play the room. There's always an argument [with my team] there, every tour. I'm in control of stuff and if I'm saying this is how it's going to be —- it's just going to be that way.

Performing At Coachella For The First Time

[After the first weekend of Coachella] I am feeling very relieved. I was so stressed about many things. How is the outfit going to work? Will the crowd really be engaged? It went so well, I have no qualms with anything. I loved every second of it.

It feels like I am partying with [my fans]. I am not performing to them; I’m performing with them. [I want people to remember] a really fun, freeing show. Very campy but very meaningful too.

Andrew Watt cut his teeth with pop phenoms, but lately, the 2021 Producer Of The Year winner has been in demand among rockers — from the Rolling Stones and Blink-182 to Elton John.

While in a studio, Andrew Watt bounces off the walls. Just ask Mick Jagger , who once had to gently tell the 33-year-old, "Look, I can deal with this, but when you meet Ronnie and Keith , you have to dial it down a little bit."

Or ask Pearl Jam 's Stone Gossard . "He really got the best out of [drummer] Matt [Cameron] just by being excited — literally jumping up and down and pumping his fist and running around," he tells GRAMMY.com.

As Watt's hot streak has burned on, reams have rightly been written about his ability to take a legacy act, reconnect them with their essence, and put a battery in their back. His efficacy can be seen at Music's Biggest Night: Ozzy Osbourne 's Patient Number 9 won Best Rock Album at the 2023 GRAMMYs . At the last ceremony, the Rolling Stones were nominated for Best Rock Song, for Hackney Diamonds ' opener "Angry."

On Pearl Jam's return to form, Dark Matter , due out April 19. Who was behind the desk? Take a wild guess.

"You want to see them live more than you want to listen to their albums, and they have the ability to look at each other and play and follow each other. I don't like my rock music any other way, as a listener," Watt tells GRAMMY.com. "All my favorite records are made like that — of people speeding up, slowing down, playing longer than they should."

As such, Watt had a lightbulb moment: to not record any demos, and have them write together in the room. "They're all playing different stuff, and it makes up what Pearl Jam is, and singer Eddie [Vedder] rides it like a wave."

If you're more of a pop listener, there's tons of Watt for you — he's worked with Justin Bieber ("Hit the Ground" from Purpose ), Lana Del Rey ("Doin' Time" from Norman F—ing Rockwell ) and much more. Read on for a breakdown of big name rockers who have worked with Andrew Watt.

Pearl Jam / Eddie Vedder

Watt didn't just produce Dark Matter ; he also helmed Vedder's well-received third solo album, Earthling , from 2022. Watt plays guitar in Vedder's live backing band, known as the Earthlings — which also includes Josh Klinghoffer , who replaced John Frusciante in the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a stint.

The Rolling Stones

Dark Matter was a comeback for Pearl Jam, but Hackney Diamonds was really a comeback for the Stones . While it had a hater or two , the overwhelming consensus was that it was the Stones' best album in decades — maybe even since 1978's Some Girls .

"I hope what makes it fresh and modern comes down to the way it's mixed, with focus on low end and making sure the drums are big," Watt, who wore a different Stones shirt every day in the studio, has said about Hackney Diamonds . "But the record is recorded like a Stones album."

Where there are modern rock flourishes on Hackney Diamonds , "There's no click tracks. There's no gridding. There's no computer editing," he continued. "This s— is performed live and it speeds up and slows down. It's made to the f—ing heartbeat connection of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Steve Jordan.

"And Charlie ," Watt added, tipping a hat to Watts, who played on Hackney Diamonds but died before it came out. "When Charlie's on it."

Ever since he first picked up a mic and removed his shirt, the snapping junkyard dog of the Stooges has stayed relevant — as far as indie, alternative and punk music has been concerned.

But aside from bright spots like 2016's Josh Homme -produced Post Pop Depression , his late-career output has felt occasionally indulgent and enervated. The 11 songs on 2023's eclectic Watt-produced Every Loser , on the other hand, slap you in the face in 11 different ways.

"We would jam and make tracks and send them to Iggy, and he would like 'em and write to them or wouldn't like them and we'd do something else," Watt told Billboard . "It was very low pressure. We just kept making music until we felt like we had an album." (And as with Pearl Jam and Vedder's Earthlings band, Watt has rocked out onstage with Pop .

Ozzy Osbourne

You dropped your crown, O Prince of Darkness. When he hooked up with Watt, the original Black Sabbath frontman hadn't released any solo music since 2010's Scream; in 2017, Sabbath finally said goodbye after 49 years and 10 (!) singers.

On 2020's Ordinary Man and 2022's Patient Number 9 , Watt reenergized Ozzy; even when he sounds his age, Ozz sounds resolute, defiant, spitting in the face of the Reaper. (A bittersweet aside: the late Taylor Hawkins appears on Patient Number 9 , which was written and recorded in just four days .)

Yeah, yeah, they're more of a pop -rock band, but they have guitars, bass and drums. (And if you're the type of rock fan who's neutral or hostile to the 5, you shouldn't be; Songs About Jane slaps.)

At any rate, Watt co-produced "Can't Leave You Alone," featuring Juice WRLD , from 2021's Jordi . Critics disparaged the album, but showed Watt's facility straddling the pop and rock worlds.

5 Seconds of Summer

When it comes to Andrew Watt, the Sydney pop-rockers — slightly more on the rock end than Maroon 5 and their ilk — are repeat customers. He produced a number of tracks for 5 Seconds of Summer, which spanned 2018's Youngblood , 2020's Calm and 2022's 5SOS5 .

Regarding the former: Watt has cited Youngblood as one of the defining recording experiences of his life.

"I had started working with 5 Seconds of Summer, and a lot of people looked at them as a boy band, but they're not," Watt told Guitar Player . "They're all incredible musicians. They can all play every instrument. They love rock music. They can harmonize like skyrockets in flight. They just were making the wrong kind of music."

So Watt showed 5 Seconds of Summer a number of mainstays of the rock era, like Tears for Fears and the Police . The rest, as they say, is history.

A year after Britney Spears was unshackled from her highly controversial conservatorship, it was time for a victory lap with the God of Glitter. What resulted was a curious little bauble, which became a megahit: "Hold Me Closer," a spin on "Tiny Dancer," "The One" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" that briefly launched Spears back into the stratosphere.

"Britney came in and she knew what she wanted to do," Watt recalled to The L.A. Times . "We sped up the song a little bit and she sang the verses in her falsetto, which harkens back to 'Toxic.' She was having a blast."

Watt has also worked with pop/punk heroes Blink-182 — but not after Tom DeLonge made his grand return. He produced "I Really Wish I Hated You" from 2019's Nine , back when Matt Skiba was in the band.

Where in the rock world will this tender-aged superproducer strike next? Watt knows.

Coachella 2024 Weekend 1 Recap: 20 Surprises And Special Moments, From Billie Eilish & Lana Del Rey To Olivia Rodrigo With No Doubt

Weekend 1 of Coachella 2024 is a wrap, and the internet can’t stop talking about it. Here are 20 surprises and special moments from Coachella so far, including inspired team-ups, wackadoo moments in the clutch, and much more.

It may be hard to believe, but Weekend 1 of Coachella 2024 is already over. Clearly, time flies when you’re having fun — particularly when beholding the world’s leading artists, convened in the Indio desert in California.

If you weren’t there, the festival was filmed, of course. You can enjoy Coachella from the comfort of your own home, sans-sunburn, undrenched with champagne.

As you survey Coachella’s sold-out first weekend, read on for 20 performances, debuts and moments that surprised and touched us from Coachella Weekend 1.

Lana Del Rey's Headlining Set Brought Out GRAMMY Winners Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste & Jack Antonoff

After rolling deep up to her desert set on a fleet of motorcycles for her Friday performance, Lana Del Rey infused her iconic sad-girl pop persona into every facet of her Gatsby-esque performance.  Her headlining set also included some special GRAMMY-winning guests: Jon Batiste and 2024 Producer Of The Year Jack Antonoff both accompanied on piano, while Billie Eilish joined her idol on stage for duet performances of "Ocean Eyes" and "Video Games." Sharing a moment with her hero on stage at the end of the set, Eilish declared, "This is the reason for half you bitches’ existence, including mine.”

Tyler, The Creator Brings Out Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Kali Uchis and Charlie Wilson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rolling Stone (@rollingstone)

Saturday's main stage event kicked off with a ruckus 80-minute set by creative magnet Tyler, The Creator , who transformed the stage into an ever-changing desert scene to host fellow performers.

First up, Childish Gambino hit the stage to perform a duet of "Running Out of Time," before A$AP Rocky joined for a performance of two tracks, "Potato Salad" and "Who Dat Boy."

Tyler admitted he once saw both as rivals, but now considers them friends. Kali Uchis also returned to the desert stage with Tyler for a quick appearance as well as legendary singer/songwriter Charlie Wilson , who made an unexpected appearance to accompany Tyler on a laid-back version of "EARFQUAKE."

No Doubt Made Their Grand Re-Entrance (With Olivia Rodrigo!)

.body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } No Doubt electrified Coachella with their first performance in nine years , featuring all original members and a blend of eclectic hits that defined their career. Their memorable reunion set highlighted their timeless appeal and was punctuated by a surprise appearance from pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo for a duet performance of No Doubt classic, "Bathwater." Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Show Up To Support Ice Spice And Jack Antonoff's Bleachers The Queen of Pop, Taylor Swift herself, showed up on Sunday with her boyfriend Travis Kelce among the crowds to support her friends: producer and Bleachers band member Jack Antonoff and Eras tourmate Ice Spice .  Will Smith Joined J Balvin For The “Men In Black” Theme .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } What slap? Last year, Will Smith appeared at “A GRAMMY Salute To 50 Years Of Hip Hop” as one half of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. And at Coachella 2024, the world was treated to another throwback, as he and four-time GRAMMY nominee J Balvin performed the immortal theme to Men in Black . Doja Cat Brought Out A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown GRAMMY winner and 19-time nominee Doja Cat turned in a performance heavy on rap — and also puppet dinosaurs. As per the former, A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown touched down, collaborating with Doja on “Urrrge,” “N.H.I.E.,” and “Masc,” respectively. Ice Spice Previewed A New Song Onstage Something’s stirring in Ice Spiceworld. At Coachella, she wowed with her live debut of a new song that sampled Sean Paul ’s 2005 track “Gimme the Light.” (She closed out with “Think U the Shit (Fart).”) As reported earlier in April , Ice Spice is going to make her acting debut in Spike Lee ’s new movie High and Low , starring Denzel Washington .  Peso Pluma Made His Coachella Debut ¡Corridos tumbados de por vida! In the wake of his big wi n at the 2024 GRAMMYs — Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano), for GÉNESIS — Peso Pluma lit up Coachella 2024 with that signature fusion of folky guitar ballads and modern hip-hop, with special guests including Becky G and Arcángel . Lil Uzi Vert Previewed A New Song Onstage Ice Spice wasn’t the only act to preview new material at Coachella 2024. Enter four-time GRAMMY nominee Lil Uzi Vert, who performed a hypnotic and — again — unnamed track, one that seemed to be tailor-made for Coachella. A Mini-Fugees Reunion Went Down (Thanks To YG Marley) Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean are no strangers to reigniting the Fugees spirit onstage — they did so at Essence Fest 2022, while GRAMMY.com was reporting on site . This time, they kept it in the family; during Hill’s son YG Marley’s set, both Fugees came out, playing classics like “Killing Me Softly.” (The embattled Pras wasn’t present.) Blur Announced This Was Their Last Performance Together .tweet-container iframe { width: 100% !important; } .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } Social media is currently abuzz at the allegedly unresponsive audience for Blur — but what’s a viral, out-of-context clip supposed to prove, anyway? Whatever the case may be, after their rollicking set, Damon Albarn and company declared that the Britpop icons were entering another hiatus. Bizarrap Brought Out Shakira .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coachella (@coachella)

Mega-watt Argentine producer Bizarrap brought his BZRP Music Sessions to the Coachella stage and included a surprise appearance from superstar Shakira .

Shakira and Bizarrap won the Latin GRAMMY for Song Of The Year at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs for "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53," a featured track on her fresh-out-the-trap album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran .

Billie Eilish Threw A Special “Billie & Friends” Party & Hyped Up The Crowd With The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coachella (@coachella)

After surprising fans during Lana Del Rey 's Friday set, Billie Eilish treated fans and special guests to a preview of her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft at the Do LaB Stage on Saturday night.

The previewed songs were well-received by an enthusiastic set of attendees who were introduced to yet-to-debut tracks "“Lunch,” "L’Amour De Ma Vie," and "Chihiro."

"Yo Gabba Gabba!" Showed Up To The Aquabats’ Pool Party

Christian Jacobs, lead singer of the Aquabats, co-created the "Yo Gabba Gabba!" TV show — and the colorful cast of costumed characters showed up to their pool party! This marks yet another example of ska picking up at Coachella — see the transcendent No Doubt and Sublime performances.

Sublime Made Their Coachella Debut With Jakob Nowell

As you may have read , Sublime are back, against the odds — not with Rome, but with Jakob Nowell , original Sublime frontman Bradley’s son. (It must be said: Bradley died at 28, ending the band’s original run; as he takes the guitar and mic, Jakob himself is 28.)

Speaking of the guitar — he wielded his old man’s, in an emotional and electrifying set that proved these songs’ durability and beyond.

Vampire Weekend Brought Paris Hilton Onstage To Play Cornhole

.body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } Life imitates Mad Libs! The beloved indie rockers are out promoting their new album, 2024’s Only God Was Above Us — and who better to cheerlead than the one and only Paris Hilton, to play the classic bean bag game with the crew? Dom Dolla Brought Out Nelly Furtado .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coachella (@coachella)

Dance/electronic sensation Dom Dolla returned to Coachella for a charged set featuring festival first-timer Nelly Furtado who joined to perform their GRAMMY-nominated track, "Eat Your Man."

Furtado gave her all during the rousing performance, a testament to the duo's synergy after Dom Dolla brought the singer out of a six year hiatus to work together on the song.

Sky Ferreira Made A Surprise Appearance With Kevin Abstract

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Stereogum (@stereogum)

If Sky Ferreira seems like an unlikely candidate to belt out a Lady A hit, think again. The singer/songwriter brought newfound heft to the five-time GRAMMY winners’ classic hit, “Need You Now,” with Kevin Abstract.

Does this foreshadow a reappraisal of the country mainstays’ catalog? Once the dust settles re: the ska revival, we’ll have that conversation.

Kesha Showed Up To Rock With Reneé Rapp (And Diss A Certain Disgraced Rapper)

“Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy ,” Kesha once rapped, in her inescapable 2009 hit “Tik Tok.” Well, that didn’t age well, and Kesha knew that. So she changed “P. Diddy” to “me” — and if that’s just going to be the official lyric now, that’s fine by the music industry. Reneé Rapp, of Mean Girls fame , bolstered her.

Mac DeMarco Joined Forces With Lil Yachty

Mac DeMarco’s been a savvy chameleon at this stage in his career, prioritizing brainy collaborations over typical album release cycles.

He has two songwriting credits on Yachty ’s game changing 2023 album Let’s Start Here , and during Yachty’s performance, he showed up to perform two of his song songs: “On The Level,” from 2017’s This Old Dog , and “Chamber of Reflection,” from his decade-old album Salad Days .

European artists on tour: the year ahead in music

artists on tour in europe

European music of every stripe will land in the UK in 2024, with touring artists ranging from the uber edgy to the fascinatingly naff making stops on this side of the Channel.

French downtempo electronic duo Air will play their classic album Moon Safari in full, amid the lavish surroundings of the London Coliseum in March (it has already sold out – sorry). Meanwhile, Icelandic-Chinese artist Laufey will bring her accomplished, understated jazz to three consecutive nights at the intimate Evolutionary Arts Hackney in February (also all sold out).

On an entirely different scale will be The World of Hans Zimmer: A New Dimension in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, and London in April. The German master of film music will not make an appearance himself, but a full symphony orchestra will play selections from everything from The Lion King to Interstellar . Hot on Zimmer’s heels will be major Dutch touring phenomenon André Rieu, whose unstuffy classical hits shows with his huge orchestra will come to eight UK arenas in April and May, part of a lengthy 2024 world tour. Seven UK dates for French-Spanish Romanis the Gipsy Kings, meanwhile, will prove Brits still love the sounds of southern Europe.

Europe’s greatest pop princesses will also grace the UK with their presence. Cologne’s own Kim Petras, whose controversy-courting collabs with Nicki Minaj and Sam Smith have already made her notorious, and Swedish child star-turned-pop-juggernaut Zara Larsson have some things in common. Both collaborated with French dance music god David Guetta last year, and both will play Manchester on the same night in February, but there the comparisons end – Larsson promises her usual display of pop professionalism, while Petras’s Feed the Beast world tour, which began last summer, is already making Madonna look like Mary Poppins.

Larsson will be promoting new album Venus with her five UK dates, and the year promises new releases galore. French bossa nova covers act Nouvelle Vague will mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album with Should I Stay or Should I Go? in February, featuring songs by artists ranging from Dead or Alive to the Smiths. Meanwhile, Lætitia Sadier, formerly of Anglo-French Indietronica band Stereolab, releases Rooting for Love next month, promising a call for healing for all humanity.

The Ghent-based synthpop artist Bolis Pupul will release his solo debut album, Letter to Yu, in March, building on the intriguing politically aware dance music he made with Belgian singer Charlotte Adigéry in 2022. New music will also come from a raft of metal acts – the genre that Europe excels at and that never goes away – including Moldovan female-fronted four-piece Infected Rain, the Swedish heavy metal band with three lead vocalists Amaranthe, and Finnish power metal act Sonata Arctica.

Finally, the unrepeatable alchemy of Eurovision returning to Sweden exactly 50 years after ABBA won with Waterloo will be a big story in 2024. It is clear that whoever wins the Melodifestivalen, which will select the Swedish entry for this magical Eurovision year, will carry a heavy weight on their shoulders, and it will truly be a year to remember for the contest’s famously ardent fans.

A summer of Singapore hardcore: Sial, Fuse and Doldrey hit the road

This June and July, three Singaporean hardcore punk bands will independently embark on tours of the UK and Europe. NME meets Sial, Fuse and Doldrey for a window into Singaporean heavy underground and to talk about touring, artistic goals and more

Sial

T his will be the summer of Singaporean hardcore – in Europe, that is.

This June and July, three hardcore punk bands from the country will embark on tours of the UK and Europe – two of them for the very first time. The members of Sial, Fuse and Doldrey are friends, often sharing practice spaces and some even starting side projects together – but, in a particularly surprising coincidence given the smallness of Singapore’s underground scene, planned their tours completely independently of each other.

It’s an interesting time for hardcore music, post- ‘Glow On’ and Turnstile’s three Grammy nominations – and, to zoom into Singapore, also an interesting time in the country’s independent music scene. DIY venues seem to have shorter shelf-lives than ever before, but countering the bleakness are fresh, exciting artists coming up and the younger, energetic fans coming out to shows post-pandemic. It’s new blood that will, with any luck, keep this scene going: “We’re just hoping that the new kids or new people that are coming in [to shows] can create something too,” says Fuse vocalist Dahliah Kamal.

Get a window into Singapore’s heavy underground by reading NME’s interviews with Sial, Fuse and Doldrey below – and, if you’re in the UK or Europe this summer, get yourself down to a show.

Sial

Sial are a force of nature. That soon becomes obvious to anyone who hears the band whether on record or at a live show, taking in Izzad Radzali Shah’s pummelling drums, the buzzsaw guitar-and-bass attack of Hafiz Shamsudin and Zafran Mohd, and most prominently, Siti Fatimah’s ferocious vocals, fuelled by fury and resentment at the injustice and oppression that Sial see in society today.

Across two full-length albums, two EPs and a two-track single, Sial have carved out a discography that has captivated listeners in Singapore and Southeast Asia – and thanks to the international punk community the band members are part of, as well as coverage in the likes of Stereogum and The Quietus , earned them fans in farther-flung places, too. Sitting in Surface Noise Records, the record shop and distributor run by Zafran, Hafiz recalls the 2016 formation of Sial and their desire, from the start, for a vocalist who sang in Malay. “English is boring,” he tells NME as Siti chuckles. “The English vocabulary is limited. Malay is more expressive.”

Sial

Chief lyricist Siti works with Izzad to imbue Sial’s music with social commentary, often through literary metaphor, about different layers of society, histories of colonisation, the experiences of the marginalised, and lightning-rod topics like capital punishment; the title of their latest EP ‘Sangkar’ means ‘cage’, and the title of their 2020 album ‘Tari Pemusnah Kuasa’ translates to ‘Dance of the Power Crusher’. Her current studies for a degree in Malay language and literature are how Siti started to “understand more about the power of words”, she shares. “Words can bring down the biggest empire, or they can lift up spirits.”

Writing in a more lyrical than colloquial register of Malay, using proverbs and taking inspiration from literary works, Siti relishes her lyrics’ contrast with the raw aggression of Sial’s music (not to mention their band name, which is a Malay expletive). “I like to explore how I can sing grittily, but the lyrics and language have to be romantic.” With the exception of the synth-heavy two-track ‘Zaman Edan’ – written while the band were homebound due to the pandemic – Sial’s music is hard, fast and loud, reflecting their ’80s hardcore inspirations.

“Words can bring down the biggest empire, or they can lift up spirits”

So it’s not surprising when Hafiz says Sial are looking forward to checking out primitive punk bands in Spain when they embark on their 10-date tour of the UK and Europe this week. The most seasoned group of the three NME’s profiling here, Sial have already toured the US, Europe and Southeast Asia. Hafiz quips that this first big trip out since Covid is something like Sial’s post-pandemic “touring revenge” – but with inflation affecting everything from plane tickets to shirt printing, it’s coming at a dearer price than their past outings.

After the UK and Europe, Sial plan to head to Japan in December – and perhaps at some point release the new music that they have in the tank. The band try to put out something new every year, but the consistency doesn’t necessarily mean the future of Sial is set in stone. The band would rather be a powerful, short-lived flame than one that slowly dims and sputters out. As Hafiz memorably puts it, “If the band breaks up, it’s OK. It’s not the end of the world. Fuck, just form another band!”

Fuse

It’s 2023 and Fuse have a new mascot: the butterfly. It’s been seven years since vocalist Dahliah Kamal, inspired by Bikini Kill and the riot grrrl movement, sent Instagram messages to acquaintances and asked if they wanted to form an all-female hardcore band – and six since their buzzy debut demo and three since their emphatic debut album, ‘This Segregation Will End’.

Fuse are embracing the butterfly, a symbol of change and metamorphosis, as they work on a new album that reflects their growth from the motley crew of five teens who wanted to be a youth crew band though they hardly knew how to play their own instruments. “Covid was a really good place for us to stop and chill,” Dahliah (who goes by Dahl) tells NME , “because now that we’ve come back, I feel like everyone grew in a lot of ways.” Adds guitarist Syafiqah Rashid, “We came back with a fresh perspective on how we want to sound like, and it changed our dynamic as a band.”

“This new record doesn’t sound like any other”

On ‘This Segregation Will End’, Fuse were looking outward to social ills, but their new record is more personal. “The songs we are writing now reflect on ourselves as individuals,” says Dahl. “Now we’re hitting the quarter life crisis, we have a lot to think about.” And what are Fuse reflecting on? “I’m trying to establish my own identity as a person, in hardcore and outside of hardcore,” says Syafiqah. “Now I’m more sure of who I am, and I’m grateful I’m able to be myself in the bands I play in.”

Unashamedly omnivorous in its inspirations – from Indonesian emo to pop to older New York hardcore – this new record reflects Fuse’s realisation that their differences are their strength. “We all have different perspectives and input,” Syafiqah says. “That’s the whole process for our new record we’re writing, because everyone’s contributing to the new songs. And this new record doesn’t sound like any other. We feel like we don’t sound like any other band.”

EU/UK JULY 2023 WITH DREGS ,💥❤️✈️🌎 pic.twitter.com/LkLYPdHlIQ — FUSE (@fusehc) March 5, 2023

It’s no wonder Sydney hardcore stars Speed , whom Fuse opened for in Singapore this March, called them “freshness overload” . Fuse will bring that freshness to Europe when they embark on their first-ever tour of the region with the band Dregs in July. Though two members of Fuse, Syafiqah and bassist Hafiza Baisyara, won’t be able to go on the tour, the band still decided to seize the opportunity to play to their fans overseas and to tour the UK, where their label Quality Control HQ is based.

Fuse are keen to tap into a global moment of greater accessibility to hardcore – thanks to live sets on YouTube and social media – and increased open-mindedness about what hardcore can be. “Globally, I think, especially in the US, Europe, UK, they’re more open to listening to bands from Asia,” says Syafiqah. And Fuse are particularly looking forward to expanding conceptions of Asian hardcore by representing Southeast Asia and Singapore. “When Western bands think about Asia, they mainly think just East Asia, like Japan,” says Dahl. “So we’re like, ‘OK, there’s more’.”

Fuse

Fuse also advocate inclusivity in a bristly, male-dominated scene that can feel daunting to newcomers. “We feel the scene can be intimidating for not only women but also for people of other genders who are shy, or feel they don’t fit into the whole hardcore image,” says Syafiqah. “We like to think we represent all of them,” adds Dahl.

As Fuse see it, Singapore hardcore, after all, needs its people. “It’s definitely a self-run community,” Dahl says. “We rely heavily on people: the people who attend shows, people who have labels, organisers, bands, promoters. We all come hand in hand. Without one, we will fall.”

Doldrey

Aidil Iskandar could not be more different onstage and off. When he and the rest of Doldrey meet NME in a musty jamming studio, he’s all smiles, both reflective and eager to talk about the ‘deathpunk’ band he’s fronted for the past five years. But when he dons fingerless gloves and takes the stage, Aidil seems like a man possessed, growling into the mic when he’s not gleefully riling up the moshpit.

“The whole idea was to play a death metal style, but have our performances be a hardcore punk act,” he says. “All the energy that you get from hardcore punk, infused with the death metal riffs, gels very well.”

It’s a brutal blend that, upon Doldrey’s debut in 2018, didn’t go down so well with some “judgy” quarters of Singapore’s metal scene, recalls drummer Farhan Muhd. But over years of consistent output – not to mention fearsome live performances – Doldrey have earned some respect. “We did the hard work,” says Aidil. “We put out the records, so I guess they’ve got nothing to say.”

“The goal was never to be at the top – the biggest band in Singapore. We just want to be everywhere”

Emerging from the ashes of Zodd, another band with a name inspired by the anime Berserk , Doldrey was founded with the explicit aim of uniting different sounds and scenes. “There’s always different sub-scenes,” Aidil explains. “When there’s a hardcore show only hardcore kids come, punk shows only punk kids and metal shows only metal guys. The whole point of Doldrey is just to bring everyone together.”

It’s a wholesome goal that you wouldn’t necessarily get from Doldrey’s eldritch, devilish imagery nor the hell-for-leather, eardrum-pulverising sound that caught the attention of Iron Lung Records, the label run by the US powerviolence band of the same name. No one member of Doldrey is pushing this dark, destructive aesthetic, says bassist Danish Emran – the band are in “unspoken” agreement about these themes that are a natural consequence of the aggressive music. Aidil, who writes Doldrey’s lyrics, also sometimes treats the metaphorical violence and domination as a vehicle for frustrations with living in a “constricted” society.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Doldrey (@siegeofdoldrey)

Doldrey released their debut album, ‘Celestial Deconstruction’, in 2022 – a year the band pronounce as “humbling”. Between the pressure of putting out a full-length and some “tensions” during its creation, the record had not been easy to make – nor release, thanks to Covid and vinyl production delays.

But the positive reception from listeners at home and abroad was gratifying – especially a three-date tour of Indonesia last November where they met some seriously dedicated fans (like the guy who owned all of Doldrey’s records – and records by all the other bands Doldrey members had played in. They spent an hour signing everything).

Doldrey

So it’s no surprise that Doldrey want to keep touring. “The goal was never to be at the top – the biggest band in Singapore,” says Danish. “We just want to be everywhere.” In July they’ll hit the road in the UK, crossing over into Belgium, Germany and finally the Czech Republic, where they’ll play the final edition of the long-running Fluff Fest, alongside the likes of Scowl and A Place to Bury Strangers . Having supported Power Trip and Candy, among others, Doldrey are also keen to keep playing local shows with international bands they can forge connections and friendships with.

And – of course – Doldrey want to keep putting out music. After a fallow period, they’ve begun to write new material again. “We want to really push ourselves,” Aidil says. “We all have the same mindset of how to do this,” adds Farhan. And Danish has the last word: “We’re lucky enough that all of us are on the same page of wanting to level up every time.”

Europe (formed in 1979) is a hard rock band from Upplands Väsby, Stockholm. The group were originally named "Force" before changing to Europe.

The group is made up of guitarist John Norum, vocalist Joey Tempest, bass player Peter Olsson and the drummer Tony Reno.

The group rose to fame after the release of their third album called "The Final Countdown" in 1986. It was used on a range of different commercials and sold over three million copies in the US.

The group uses a range of metal/ blues metal genres in their music, "The Final Countdown" was said to be a masterpiece that contributed many different simultaneous styles.

Europe sold over 20 million albums world wide and was considered to be a huge rock band of the 1980s. The band is said to be influenced by Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, KISS and the likes of Black Label Society.

In 2011, Europe headlined the closing ceremonies at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden before a huge audience. Later that year they announced their ninth studio album that was produced by Kevin Shirley, it was named "Bag of Bones". The album went on to reach number two on the Swedish Album Chart.

In 2013 the band played at the Sweden Rock Festival, their performance was released on DVD and CD for their 30th Anniversary as a group.

Live reviews

For many, at this point in time, Europe’s ‘The Final Countdown’ will inspire images of GOB from Arrested Development and his flamboyant introduction to his magic show; the truth is, though, that that song has a far wider significance in rock history, having topped the charts in twenty five countries back in 1986. The band themselves, though, would surely take offence at accusations of being one-hit wonders; they’ve had three platinum records, and continue to be a major commercial force in their native Sweden. After an eleven year lay-off between 1992 and 2003 - the split was amicable - they continue to record and tour today. Time hasn’t slowed them down, either, with their live shows continuing to be high-octane, relentlessly energetic affairs; frontman Joey Tempest is irrepressible, acting as a conduit for the crowd’s energy whilst the rest of the band perform in front of a veritable mountain of Marshall amps. They’ve toured the UK regularly since the reunion, with their most recent jaunt just this last April, a co-headlining affair with Foreigner that had them running through the classics as well as a slew of material from 2012’s Bag of Bones LP. With a significant fanbase the world over, don’t expect Europe to vanish any time soon; not unless they step inside GOB’s Aztec Tomb, anyway.

Europe, the Swedish rock group have had a turbulent career ranging from huge international commerciality to an eleven year hiatus. Now back firmly in the world of recording and touring, they continue to travel the globe and demonstrate their reputation as one of Sweden's most successful rock bands. Away from the obviously international hit 'The Final Countdown' the band has enjoyed three platinum selling albums and a string of lesser known hit singles such as 'Rock The Night' and 'Superstitious'.

Performing a short but concise set to the crowd gathered in Wolverhampton's Civic Hall, Europe behave as a classic rock ensemble; very little stage decoration, moody fluorescent lighting and a lot of swagger from frontman Joey Tempest. A more acquired taste in the UK, the crowd still cheered enthusiastically at a great rendition of 'Superstitious' and a drawn out instrumental version of 'Carrie'.

It would be fair to say that the audience were all waiting for that one classic track, 'The Final Countdown' which closed the show. It may be this song that the crowd would be singing long into the night, but Europe easily proved themselves as a worthy rock band as opposed to a one hit wonder.

The stage was impressive as were the band. Sounding like they had just released their first album, Europe rocked through the entire concert. No support act and a show so awesome it needed an intermission, we rocked, sang and danced with Joe and the boys through all the old hits and the best of the new. The energy of the guys was astounding, each having their own moment to shine. The drum solo was a stand out. It was a well crafted set list, with the big anthems and softer ballads, blended to remind us that Europe has been part of the soundtrack of our lives. A concert that left us grinning and singing on the night and for days afterwards.

Excellent band. Great energy playing as if they were only new on the scene.

2 negatives.... Too many new songs and not enough hits and also no encore. Everyone wanted more but as it was a Co headlining tour they only did 70 minutes.

joey tempest is an amazing front man and this bunch of musicians deserve a lot of credit for their live performances.

Love this band, have been to every gig since 1989 except one where I was ill. Europe have great songs and the new album War of Kings is brilliant, they are entertaining Joey is funny and makes a great frontman and the band as a whole are great musicians. Would highly recommend them as a fantastic live band.

Excellent performance! The band looked really good and they enjoyed the show, especially Joey.

They performed the last album and the Final Countdown entirely according to the schedule.

The sound was really good and the two video walls were projecting scenes from the 80s. Really cool!

Spilimbergo brims with discoveries, frescoes and mosaic art.

A man walks his dog past the Palazzo Ercole, also known as the Painted House, just outside of the Spilimbergo city center, April 17, 2024. The frescoes depict The Abduction of Deianira; Chiron the centaur; the Spilimbergo lineage; two scenes with children and Hercules wrestling the lion.

Midway between the beaches of the Adriatic Sea and the mountainous terrain of northern Italy is the small Italian city of Spilimbergo, home to Europe’s largest natural stream and a center for the creation of mosaic artwork.

In addition, the quaint, rectangular Ancona Church — one of seven in the city — is a peaceful spot to view what is left of the Tagliamento River. On a clear day, the tips of the Julian Alps are visible on the horizon.

Throughout the city, which is 30 to 40 minutes away from Aviano Air Base by car, remnants of frescoes painted on the sides of the buildings are still visible. The Palazzo Ercole, for example, depicts the stories of Hercules and is dated by historians to have been painted in 1519.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, known as the gem of Spilimbergo, awaits visitors on April 17, 2024. The cathedral has undergone restoration since an earthquake shook the city in 1976.

For many, Spilimbergo is synonymous with an art form that has its roots in antiquity. A 15-minute walk from the city center takes visitors to the 101-year-old Spilimbergo School of Mosaic Art.

On weekdays, it’s possible to walk around and see smaller, more intricate mosaics in the courtyard. An in-depth guided look at the school is offered on the weekends as part the “Discovering Spilimbergo” tour of the city.

Walking the halls of the school during the week, visitors can hear the sound of the students’ crescent-shaped hammers, known as martelline, fracturing the small pieces of stone used in the mosaics.

On the outside of the Church of Saint Joseph and Saint Pantaleon is the wall mosaic “The litanies of the Virgin Mary,” in Spilimbergo, on April 17, 2024. The art was made by the Friuli School for Mosaic Artists.

Mosaic artwork created by students can also be found integrated throughout Spilimbergo along the community playgrounds, on the sides of churches and throughout the monuments.

But the school’s influence has reached well beyond the town over the years, with commissioned work on display in places like Rome and Tokyo. The mosaic lining of the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was created inside the school.

The Ancona Church is a plain rectangular-plan, single-nave church located near the Spilimbergo city center. The church's beauty and view of the Tagliamento have led the locals to call it "the church of lovers."

Almost every town in the region has a weekly open-air market, and Spilimbergo is no different. The aromas of fresh bread and cheese and the pungent smell of fish stands fill the streets on Saturday mornings.

After walking across the balance-challenging cobblestone streets and seeing its beauty, I came away convinced that the town belongs on any list of places to see in this bucolic part of Italy.

Address: For the mosaic school, Via Corridoni 6, Spilimbergo, Italy; tourist office, Piazza Duomo 1

Hours: Tourist office, Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.; closed Mondays. Mosaic school, Monday through Friday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Guided tours are available on Saturday and Sundays, but must be arranged in advance through the tourist office.

Cost: 2 euros for the tour of the mosaic school.
