batu caves tourist attraction

Introduction

The magnificent Batu Caves are one of the top tourist attractions in Malaysia, partly because they are located only 13km from downtown Kuala Lumpur and easy to get to. Also, entrance to the main cave is free!

Countless tour operators run half-day trips to the Caves but you do not really need to waste USD50 on an organized tour unless you like being rushed around the caves so that the guides can have extra time to drag you to handicraft shops and earn some extra commission.

The last time I went I spent just USD1 on transport and a further USD3.50 for a perfectly acceptable curry lunch. You can do the same but first let me explain what attractions you can expect at Batu Caves.

There are 4 main attractions at Batu Caves which is a limestone hill riddled with caves. These attractions are Temple Cave (or Cathedral Cave), Dark Cave, Cave Villa and Ramayana Cave

Temple Cave (or Cathedral Cave)

Batu Caves Temple Cave

The main Cave is known as the Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave and is accessed by a steep flight of 272 steps.

The top of the stairs brings you into a massive cave with a high vaulted ceiling. The cave serves as a Hindu Temple devoted to Lord Muragan whose 42 meter high gold statue stands guard outside.

There is no entry fee for visiting the Temple Cave although you may leave a donation in one of the collection boxes if you wish.

Batu Caves monkeys

The steps are thronged with troupes of greedy macaques who will harass you for food if you are carrying any (better not to feed them).

Batu Caves Dark Cave

Half way up the flight of stairs is the entrance to the second main attraction, the Dark Cave . This is more of an adventure cave with educational and scientific interest.

It is not always open (on 2 of my 7 visits to the Caves it has been closed) and depends on the availability of a guide without whom you are not allowed to enter.

The Dark Cave is said to be home to the rarest spider in the world, the Trapdoor Spider, and an ancient animal community dating back over 100 million years (which during my visit seemed only to comprise bats and cockroaches!).

I took my kids on the Educational Tour lasting 45 minutes which costs RM35 per adult and RM25 per child . Helmets and a headlamp were provided and the amusing guide pointed out interesting rock formations and bat populations and let us know when we were surrounded by a sea of cockroaches. We stuck to the pathways and avoided shining our lights directly at the bats.

Braver people can take the Adventure Tour which lasts 3 to 4 hours and involves getting wet, scaling rock faces and squeezing through narrow pot holes. This tour costs RM 80 per adult and RM 55 per child .  You need to bring suitable clothing. Advance booking is required for the Adventure Tour (the sign outside said call 012-2873797 for more details).

Part of the Dark Cave complex is off-limits and preserved as a conservation site.

NOTE: Since writing the above, the organisation running the Dark Cave tours ceased operations in January 2019 so it is no longer possible to visit the Dark Cave unless it is reopened in the future.

Batu Caves Cave Villa

If you cannot manage to climb the 272 steps and if the Dark Cave sounds too creepy you can instead visit the 3rd main attraction, the Cave Villa which lies at the foot of the limestone hill.

You have to pay an entrance fee (RM15 for foreigners, RM7 for Malaysian residents) and cross a crooked bridge over a carp pool. Here there are two more show caves illuminated with coloured lights and containing brightly painted statues and paintings of Indian poets and characters from Hindu mythology. You can read the plaques containing pearls of oriental wisdom while strolling around the humid caves. One of the caves also contains glass display tanks full of snakes and other reptiles. I have heard that they now also have rabbits and racoons in small cages which some visitors may find repugnant.

Ramayana Cave

Batu Caves Ramayana Cave

The 4th attraction is Ramayana Cave . This cave is located on the left side when you are facing the hill close to a 15 metre high green statue of Hanuman, the monkey god. It is decorated with statues and scenes from the Hindu epic, Ramayana. Each time I go, I find fancier display and more colourful lights so that it now resembles a kind of Hindu theme park. Definitely worth seeing. There is a separate fee of RM 5 to visit this cave.

Batu Caves KL Ramayana

In the courtyard outside the caves you can see a statue of a five legged bull (with an extra leg growing out of its back) which used to roam freely in the temple grounds until its death from old age.

2024 Ticket Prices

Main Batu Cave (Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave) - FREE.

Dark Cave (closed until further notice).

Cave Villa RM 15 (RM 7 for Malaysians).

Ramayana Cave RM 5.

How to Get to Batu Caves

On previous visits I took the KTM Komuter train from KL Sentral all the way to Batu Caves Komuter station which is located a few steps from the entrance to the attractions. The fare, as at February 2023, is still only RM2.60 each way (for those paying with cash and RM2.30 if you pay with Touch'n Go), which makes it the cheapest and easiest way to travel. The train has ladies-only coaches for the comfort and safety of female passengers. If you take your own car there is ample parking once you have negotiated the confusing road layout and reached the entrance to the cave complex.

Batu Caves vegetarian meal

There are a few restaurants (vegetarian only being a Hindu Temple) where you can get a tasty Indian curry of 4 veggie dishes, rice and poppadoms served on a banana leaf, together with a fresh coconut juice for around RM9. (Those prices were a few years ago and no doubt will cost more given Malaysia's high inflation rate but will still be inexpensive).

When to Visit?

Batu Caves Thaipusam

During the Thaipusam festival (which falls in January or February each year) hundreds of thousands of believers will throng to the cave, including a number who impale themselves with skewers and hooks as acts of penitence and devotion. Unless you are particularly fond of huge crowds or wish to take part in the festival, you might want to avoid visiting Batu Caves at this time.

Opening Hours:

Open Daily 7am to 8pm

No short skirts or short shorts (hot pants).

Rock Climbing at Gua Damai

Looking for a more extreme activity? How about rock climbing at Gua Damai at Batu Caves? You can spend 3-4 hours climbing with qualified guides with all gear and safety equipment included. Find more details and obtain an 11% discount by buying online through  Tripcarte's secure website  with instant ticketing, refundable* and hassle free e-tickets.

What Is Batu Caves?

Put simply, Batu Caves is a set of Hindu temples built in both caves and the surrounds on the edge of Kuala Lumpur. There are four main caves to visit.

Keep reading for more details.

History Of Batu Caves Malaysia

Batu Caves Looking back towards KL

Batu Caves is situated on a mogote which is a type of steep-sided hill made out of limestone, marble or dolomite. This limestone formation is thought to be around 400 million years old and is quite a sight on the edges of the massive Kuala Lumpur.

So if you want to know, when was Batu Caves built ? The answer is they have existed for a long time. But its relatively recent history is when things become more interesting.

The caves found here were first used by humans as shelter by the indigenous population. Then around 1860, Chinese settlers began taking the guano found here (bat poo) for fertilising their gardens.

The Batu Caves story really begins when an Indian Tamil trader, K. Thamboosamy Pillai, dedicated a temple to Lord Murugan inside the caves. He promoted this to others in the Hindu community as a place of worship.

Then in 1890, Pillai, the founder of Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur, installed the consecrated statue of Sri Murugan Swami in Temple Cave.

After this, the tradition of celebrating the Thaipusam festival at this site began in 1892 and Batu Caves was on the map as an important site for the Tamil population of Malaysia.

Batu Caves temple history took a big step forward when wooden steps up to Temple Cave were built in 1920. In 1940, two sets of concrete steps were completed.

The next big change came in 2018 Batu Caves when the stairs were painted to form the famous, colourful site that it is today.

Today, Batu caves is one of the most popular Hindu temples outside India. It receives many visitors and is one of the most popular attractions in Malaysia.

Where Are The Batu Caves In Malaysia? And Batu Caves Address

Approaching Batu Caves

The Batu Caves location is on the edge of Kuala Lumpur, about 13 kilometres from the centre.

The Batu Caves temple address is simply Batu Caves, 68100 Batu Caves, Selangor, Malaysia. You can see the map below for where to find it as well as instructions.

How To Get To Batu Caves

KTM Komuter train at Batu Caves station. This is the ladies coach

It is simple to get to Batu Caves from KL. If you aren’t in KL yet, make your way to the capital and then you can follow our instructions from here.

You basically have two choices. Either take a taxi or get the train.

Taxis are the simple option and only cost around RM20 on the Grab app depending on the time of day and how busy the taxi service is. It takes around 20-55 minutes depending on traffic.

The other option is the KTM Komuter train. This is also straight forward.

Batu Caves is at the end of the line and you can easily catch this from KL Sentral or Kuala Lumpur station. This takes about 35 minutes and is clean and comfortable.

Read our full guide to how to get to Batu Caves here.

An even easier option where you’ll also learn more about Batu Caves facts is to take a tour. These are cheap and easy and usually available daily. See more information below on the best Batu Caves tour package options.

Batu Caves Opening Hours

I read many times before I visited that the Batu Caves opening times are 7am-8pm daily.

However, this isn’t quite true. The main temple and staircase area opened at 5:45am when I visited, but different parts of Batu Caves have different opening hours.

Cave Villa opens 8:30am – 5:30pm. Ramayana Cave opens 9am – 6pm.

If you want to make the most of your visit, going early does help you arrive when the tourists aren’t there. I took many of these photos 7:15 – 8am and you can see the lack of tourists. I was the only one there not worshipping which was a fantastic experience.

But then I was left waiting for other temples to open. It’s really up to you what works best.

Batu Caves how many steps

Batu Caves Entrance Fee

The good news is that some of the Batu Caves attraction is free! So if you are on a tight budget, you can definitely still visit here and experience it.

Some of the individual activities in Batu Caves have an entry fee. The Batu Caves tickets price for Ramayana Cave is RM5 and Cave Villa is RM15. It’s cheaper for Malaysians.

Things To Do Around Batu Caves

There are a few different Batu Caves attractions including four caves, the colourful steps and, of course, the big Lord Murugan Statue.

Lord Murugan Statue Batu Caves

The Lord Murugan Batu Caves statue is the massive gold statue next to the stairs. You cannot miss it.

Its height is a massive 42.7 metres, and it took three years to build. It was actually only added to the site in 2006.

Lord Hanuman Statue Batu Caves

Lord Hanuman Statue Sri Anjaneyar Temple Batu Caves Hanuman

The Lord Hanuman Statue is a green statue that is an impressive 15 metres high about 100 metres to the left of Lord Murugan.

There is also a temple next to this which is worth checking out.

Batu Caves Steps

Batu Caves steps count

Since the Batu Caves Malaysia steps were painted such amazing colours, they may be the most well known part of Batu Caves – and you’ll definitely want to take a photo and walk to the top to Temple Cave.

If you are wondering how many steps in Batu Caves, there are 272. It’s quite a work out!

The stairs are in good condition though with a hand rail so it’s easy enough to do.

Take a moment to turn around and take in the view as you walk up as well. You can see a fair bit of KL from up here.

Temple Cave

Inside Temple Cave at Batu Caves

Located at the top of the stairs, Temple Cave is the most famous of the Batu Caves. This is where you can easily explore the Batu Caves inside.

You’ll find a huge cavern with two shrine areas. The Batu Caves height is about 90 metres here.

The first temple is devoted to Lord Muragan and the second one is where the Sri Valli Deivanai temple is. This is devoted to the wife of Murugan.

It definitely feels like a world away from Kuala Lumpur.

Batu Caves Dark Cave

The Dark Cave Batu Caves is a conservation site.

It is located by an area about midway up the stairs. There is a path here that leads to the entrance of the Dark Caves.

Visits to this cave are by tour only. However, it was not clear to me whether tours here have resumed or not since they were stopped a few years ago.

If you are able to visit, this cave is not lit and known for its rock formations, wildlife, particularly the Trapdoor Spider which is meant to be the rarest spider in the world, and adventure activities.

The tours previously were either a shorter one where you got to see the rock formations and bats (and maybe a spider) or an adventure tour which included spelunking, visiting adventurous narrow sections and getting wet.

Ramayana Cave

Ramayana Cave

Another of the Batu Caves things to do is the interesting Ramayana Cave. It’s located next to the Hanuman statue about 100 metres to the left of the stairs.

Ramayana Cave is much smaller with lower ceilings than Temple Cave, but it is decorated with many statues, shrines and scenes from the Hindu epic of the same name. More items are being added over time, so even if you have been here before, you may want to check it out again.

This cave has an entry fee which helps keep visitor numbers down making it more enjoyable.

Entry to Cave Villa Batu Caves

The final cave you’ll want to consider visiting is Cave Villa, just to the left of the colourful stairs. This can be an option if you can’t climb the 272 stairs to Temple Cave.

This cave has a RM15 entry fee (less for Malaysians) at the time of publishing, and there are a couple of entry points which are clearly signposted. It’s a privately own caved and not associated with the rest of Batu Caves.

After paying the entry fee, you get to walk across a bridge over a koi pond as pictured above. There are actually two caves here that also have statues, scenes and shrines.

Unfortunately, there are also some caged animals and reptiles in inhumane conditions, so I recommend you choose to skip this cave rather than pay to support this. I chose to not go inside for this reason.

Other Temples

The temple next to the stairs Batu Caves

There are multiple temples here in addition to the caves that you can easily visit as you explore the site.

You need to be dressed respectively to enter (see more about this below), and you should remove your shoes and socks.

These are such peaceful, special places to explore early as people made offerings and chanted. I highly recommend it.

Rock Climbing Batu Caves

Looking for more adventure on your Batu Caves trip? You can rock climb here!

You can do this in a 3-4 hour session with guides and all gear included. You do need a good fitness level but it’s ok for beginner rock climbers.

The climbing takes place at Gua Damai on the same limestone hills as the caves.

Click here more details and latest prices.

Thaipusam Festival

Thaipusam at Batu Caves

The main Batu Caves festival is for the annual celebration of Thaipusam, a major Hindu event.

It’s a three day festival which occurs in late January or early February with processions and many, many pilgrims.

It’s quite an experience and worth attending if you are around at the right time.

However, it’s quite a different experience to a trip to Batu Caves at other times so try to experience Batu Caves at a less busy time as well.

You can find more city tours that include Batu Caves here.

Batu Caves Dress Code

Batu Caves dress rules, Batu Caves what to wear

This is a sacred site and you need to dress appropriately. I met someone the day before my most recent visit who told me how she forgot to wear her long dress on her visit and had to buy the RM15 scarves to cover up.

To avoid this, you basically want to cover your knees and shoulders.

The photo above is from the bottom of the stairs up to Temple Cave and gives you a good description of what is ok and not. You can take your own scarf to cover up when going in the temples or buy one here if you are stuck.

You need to take your shoes and socks off to enter temples. This can mean that sandals can be easier. However, I recommend good walking shoes for the stairs so you can feel steady and supported, especially if they are wet.

Batu Caves Weather And When To Visit Batu Caves

Malaysia is in the tropics and basically this means it is hot and humid year round – and it could rain any time you visit Batu Caves. In fact, it didn’t rain during my visit, but there was water falling in Temple Cave so I still got wet!

The heaviest rains can be in March or April, but I would prepare for the fact that rain can happen at any time.

This means it is always smart to take an umbrella, but I would definitely try for a dry day when you visit. It wouldn’t be much fun walking up the Batu Caves staircase in the rain.

The weather Batu Caves experiences is always hot. Visiting first thing in the morning can feel a lot cooler though and I would avoid the heat in the middle of the day if possible.

Batu Caves Monkeys

Batu Caves monkey

The monkeys at Batu Caves have a mischievous reputation so watch out for them 🙂

They are not always around so you may not see them, but if you do, I recommend not having food out when they are around. It’s best not to fight them if they try to take something from you as they can bite. Basically, ignore them if you can.

Batu Caves Restaurant

restaurants near Batu Caves

There are eating options right by Batu Caves as pictured above which is to the right of the Batu Caves Murugan statue.

Not much is open early, when this photo was taken, but you’ll never go hungry here.

Final Words

The Batu Caves temple Malaysia is an amazing place to visit and it should be high on your list of attractions to see when in KL. It’s easy to get here and combine with other sightseeing so there’s really no reason to miss it.

It was an extra awesome experience visiting early in the morning when everyone around seemed there to worship. The chanting, the cooler air, the amazing surrounds… such an experience!

Batu Caves Claimed

Batu Caves is a an iconic and popular tourist attraction in Selangor. Site of a Hindu temple and shrine, Batu Caves attracts thousands of worshippers and tourists, especially during the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam. A limestone outcrop located just north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves has three main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines. Its main attraction is the large statue of the Hindu God at the entrance, besides a steep 272 climb up its steps to finally view the stunning skyline of the city centre. Monkeys frolic around the caves, and it is a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. Paintings and scenes of Hindu Gods can also be seen in the Ramayana Cave.

Rainbow Staircase

Most tourist has always known the famous 272 steps leading to the entrance of the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves as being in the very common red and white colours that are associated with most Hindu temples. However, visitors of the renowned temple received a pleasant surprise that could only be described as a feast for the eyes after the sombre stairs were transformed into an Instagram-worthy background with a myriad of colours seemingly overnight. The colourful new steps are already proving popular with Instagrammers, but the religious site is also a pilgrimage for many Hindus and features a massive golden statue of the god Lord Murugan.

The Dark Cave of Batu Caves : The Dark Dominion in the City

Located 1 kilometre north of Kuala Lumpur and rising 326 metres above sea level is Batu Caves Hill, where two worlds coexist, so distinct and contrasting even to an untrained eye. One world exists on the surface of this limestone hill spanning an area of only 1.56 square kilometres. It is nonetheless the most prominent limestone hill in Selangor. Limestone is a hotbed of many rare plants. As many as 269 species of plants have been discovered here, constituting about a quarter of plant species found in the limestone ecosystem in West Malaysia, of which 48 species are endemic to the peninsula.

Meanwhile, another world is tucked inside the cave, engulfed in pitch darkness, and has never seen the light of day. Batu Caves Hill has some 20 caves and its biggest and most well-known cave is the Temple Cave, and beside it is the Dark Cave. Scientific studies of the cave can be traced back as early as 1896 by a European named Ridley. Batu Caves is among the most researched caves in Southeast Asia today.

How to get there

The Dark Cave of Batu Caves is located about 1km north of Kuala Lumpur. Its entrance is situated beside the Temple Cave. Visitors have to walk up the long staircase before reaching the entrance on the left of the stairs. Due to limited parking spaces, visitors are advised to take public transport or reach early, especially on public holidays. To take a bus, hop on Bus No. 11 from Bangkok Bank near Central Market; to take a train, just board KTM Komuter and alight at the Batu Caves stop and walk to the main entrance.

batu caves tourist attraction

Top choice in Malaysia

Just 13km north of Kuala Lumpur rise the iconic Batu Caves, a Malaysian national treasure, Hindu pilgrimage site and wildlife-conservation zone. Behind a 42.7m statue of Hindu deity Murugan, 272 steps climb to limestone caves housing temples that have drawn pilgrims for over 120 years. Prowled by monkeys and attracting a dizzying number of tourists and devotees, Batu Caves are an unforgettable excursion from KL.

Hours vary by cave. Temple Cave is free. The others, like Ramayana Cave , carry charges.

American naturalist William Hornaday is credited with discovering the caves in 1878, though they were known to Chinese settlers (who collected guano) and, of course, the local indigenous peoples.

Be sure to plan enough time to tour the Dark Cave to learn about the area’s natural history and spot bats and spiders on a 45-minute guided tour. If you don't mind crowds, come for the three-day Thaipusam festival in late January or early February, when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge at the caves.

A Guide To Batu Caves: How To Get There, Attractions, And More

Ask yourself this: When was the last time you visited Batu Caves? If it’s been a while, why not venture out to the famed rainbow steps for a change? Whether you’re looking for creative ways to explore Malaysia or need suggestions to recommend to your friends who are visiting, we can assure you that checking out Batu Caves will be a memorable time. Without further ado, here’s a detailed guide to Batu Caves, Malaysia.

Tourists may be familiar with our iconic skyscraper, the Petronas Twin Towers, but have you been to Batu Caves? As one of the biggest attractions in Malaysia , Batu Caves is a limestone hill consisting of beautiful caves, temples and Hindu shrines. Apart from its stunning caves, the main attraction is the colossal gold-painted statue of Murugan (Hindu God of War), which took three years to build. According to Discover Walks , it is the third tallest statue of a Hindu deity in the world. The tallest are Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue in Indonesia and Kailashnath Mahadev Statue in Nepal.

Famed for its iconic 272 steps, the journey leads to the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple and offers a breathtaking view of the statue and city. If it isn’t your first time, we’re sure you’ve seen the stunning makeover these steps received in 2018. While it has always been a go-to tourist destination, the steps were recently transformed into an Instagram-worthy spot, thanks to the kaleidoscopic staircase. In fact, homegrown artist Yuna shot her music video for her single Forevermore  on the iconic steps, and we think it’s absolutely stunning. The steps are also known to have loitering monkeys, so be sure not to interact with them, as they can be pretty aggressive.

The dark cave.

In the Dark Cave, curious explorers and scientists have ventured into these caves since the 1880s. Considered the longest cave system in Batu Caves, the caves live up to their name as there are no lights installed for visitors when exploring these caves. Before the pandemic, visitors were allowed to purchase the adventure tour where they could learn more about cave formations, wildlife and creepy-crawlies. Unfortunately, the adventure tour is currently closed till further notice.

The Ramayana Cave

A tourist favourite, the Ramayana Cave offers the most beautifully embellished caves in Batu Caves depicting the mythology of Ramayana — a love story of one of the most significant Hindu scripture. If you’re not familiar with the tale, The Ramayan is an ancient Sanskrit where Prince Rama ventures into a quest to rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana with help from an army of monkeys.

To get there, all you need to do is to pass the Hanuman statue and cross the bridge to enter. As you make your way, it’s hard to miss the sleeping figure of Kumbhkaran and a deep sleeper. It’s also a great way to immerse yourself in the tale that is beautifully carved on the stones.

As a place of worship, it is advisable to dress appropriately when you’re there. For ladies, we recommend wearing long dresses or pants and ensuring your shoulders are covered. As for men, it’s best to keep things simple with a tee and shorts (below the knee) or a pants combo. Of course, the appropriate form of footwear is a pair of sneakers or your ideal comfy shoes. You will need it to climb 272 steps.

Batu caves is open every day from 7 AM – 9 PM. The best time to go is in the morning before 9 AM if you want a good photo-op taken on the Batu Caves steps. Depending on your visit’s aim, take note that the Thaipusam (a festival celebrated by the Hindu Tamil community)  celebrations will occur every year between the end of January and the first week of February, while Deepavali celebrations begin in October or November. Due to its natural beauty and temples, the Batu Caves have become a celebrated destination for those who want to pay their respect to Lord Murugan.

Batu Caves: An Ultimate Guide to Malaysia’s Must-See Tourist Attraction

Author's Profile Picture

October 13, 2022

Brief Background to the Batu Caves

No visit to Kuala Lumpur, or indeed Malaysia, would be complete without a visit to the extraordinary Batu Caves. The Batu Caves are home to a grotto of temples that have become among the most revered Hindu shrines outside of India. Situated to the north of Kuala Lumpur, the Batu Caves sit in limestone hills which offer magnificent natural views as well as the splendid Hindu holy sites within them that they are famous for.

the Batu Caves

The impressive and colorful path to the great staircase marks the start of an incredible day

Traveling to the Batu Caves

If you are stationed in Kuala Lumpur there are varied methods of travel available to you depending on your preference. Arguably, the most convenient way to visit the caves is by taxi. From the Kuala Lumpur city center to the Batu Caves will take around 15 minutes and costs roughly RM40 (approx. 10 USD) one way. If the cost of a taxi would eat into your traveling budget consider taking a train. Commuter trains run frequently from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station to the Batu Caves and are far more affordable at around RM3 (less than a dollar) one way! If you are feeling in an adventurous mood why not join the locals and take the bus as the 11 and/or the 11D from near to Central Market will take you to the caves. If it is easier for you to travel from Chow Kit you can use the U6 to take you to the same destination. If all this sounds like hard work, consider taking a guided tour . Although the most expensive option, guided tours are good value for money and will often include visits to a variety of tourist attractions as well as the caves. You should find that two to four hours will allow you to have a good look around the site. However, if you really want the full experience and do the Adventure Tour in the Dark Cave allow for this to take several hours on its own.

Things to do at the Batu Caves

Although the Batu Caves first gained global fame in 1878, it wasn’t until 1891 that the Malaysian Tamil Hindu leader K. Thamboosamy Pillay had a shrine erected to the Hindu god Lord Murugan in the largest cave. In his opinion, To Pillay, the entrance of the main cave strongly resembled Lord Murugan’s spear. He saw this as a symbol that a grand tribute to the deity should be built within the caverns and from this time the Hindu festival of Thaipusam has been celebrated there and still attracts a multitude of pilgrims to this day. Over the years the caves became more famous and began to attract tourists from around the world. Here I’ll detail the major attractions although it’s important to remember that this site offers so much more than we can show you here. For a more detailed look at the area click here .

The Statue of Lord Murugan

You will be greeted by The statue of Lord Murugan which stands proud and impressive at your place of arrival and believe me, you can’t miss him! At 140 feet tall you will be looking (up, of course) at the tallest statue of this important Hindu deity in the world. Although added to the site fairly recently, in 2006, the statue has fast become an iconic image for the Batu Caves site.

The statue of Lord Murugan

The statue of Lord Murugan proudly stands sentinel over the entrance to the Batu Caves.

The Temple Cave

You reach the mouth of the Temple Cave by climbing a long staircase which is the beating heart of the Batu Caves complex. Once there, you will marvel at the sheer size of the cavern as you look up 295 feet (90 meters) above you to its ceiling. Once there, you’ll stand in awe at the many buildings carved into the face of the solid rock and the beautiful Hindu shrines that populate this cave. After carrying on through you will come across another set of stairs (don’t worry, much smaller than the first) to another open-air cavern in which you’ll discover the Sri Valli Deivanai temple which is dedicated to Murugan’s wife and it’s worth the climb. Daylight streams down the high stone walls to create a breathtaking vista that will compel you to forget the difficult climb. After taking in the incredible view and having a drink of water you have the opportunity to move on to…

the Temple Cave

Daylight streaming into the Sri Valli Deivanai temple in the Temple Cave creating a vision of serenity and awe.

The Dark Cave

You’ll be pleased to discover that the next step on your journey takes you down the massive staircase to a midway point that leads to the entrance of the Dark Cave . Visits to this cave are limited to guided tours for ecological reasons, these come in two options. The 45-minute tour allows you to see the fantastic rock formations and the bats that inhabit the cavern. A much longer (a few hours) tour allows you to properly explore the cave complex, crawl along its narrow cave paths and even go spelunking.

The Ramayana Cave

328 feet to the left of the entrance you will see an enormous green statue of the Hindu god Hanuman. Behind this is the Ramayana Cave , a smaller cavern filled with a cornucopia of statues, shrines, and colors which makes it unlike any of the other caves. The Ramayana Cave is renowned for its tranquillity as it attracts fewer visitors than the others but according to visitors, it’s a must-see attraction.

Enjoy Rock Climbing

Hindu religious sites do not tend to be well known for their rock climbing opportunities but at the Batu Caves, it’s definitely on the menu. The north-eastern side of the hill has become a popular location for rock climbers mainly due to the rough, wide-ranging limestone hills around the caves. Rock climbing is best booked in advance and there are tours available and extensive expert advice obtainable from local rock climbers.

The Magnificent Cave Staircase

The cave staircase at the Batu Caves is so spectacular that it deserves a section of its own here. Located at the base of the statue of Murugan is a big plaza with metal barriers leading to the entrance of the site, this is where you will find the spectacular staircase that takes visitors to the Batu Caves and the temple. First constructed in 1920 and renovated since, this staircase surrounded by lush vegetation and limestone is the most popular attraction for photographers in the entire complex. This popularity was enhanced in 2018 when the staircase was painted vibrant colors, making quite the splash on social media sites and confirming the Batu Caves as one of the most colorful tourist destinations in the world. Prepare for a climb of 300 stairs to get to the top so this part of the trip is not suitable for people with mobility issues but don’t panic, there’s plenty to do at ground level.

Faq about batu caves, what will the weather be like at the batu caves.

It will be very, very warm and humid.

Are there any specific rules relating to the religious shrines?

The temples and shrines of the Batu Caves are an active place of Hindu worship and as such a visitor should be mindful to dress modestly, covering knees and shoulders, to show respect to local customs and traditions.

What is the best time of day to visit Batu Caves?

If you can stand to get up early I suggest that you do and travel to the Batu Caves in time for their opening at 6 AM. At this time there will be far fewer tourists and the temperatures will be cooler.

What is the cost of visiting the Batu Caves?

The cost of visiting these remarkable grottos is zero if you stick to the main temple complex. Some of the attractions have their own small entrance fees. Admission to the Ramayana Cave is RM5, and the cheapest tour through the Dark Cave is a reasonable RM35.

Are there facilities for people with mobility issues?

The ground is a bit uneven but is traversable in a wheelchair.

Visiting Malaysia’s top tourist attraction: The Batu Caves

Find the ride you need in.

Batu Caves is a popular attraction in Malaysia. What are they and how can you get there? Click here to read everything you need to know.

Batu Caves, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s vibrant capital offers plentiful sightseeing opportunities, cultural experiences and nature oases. Whether you arrive into Kuala Lumpur by flight, or overland from Malaysia’s historic town of Penang , the first thing you will want to do is head out and explore its attractions. Aside from marveling at Malaysia’s twin towers, known as the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves is without a doubt the first attraction on every tourists’ list. The 272-step rainbow splashed stairway and the fascinating Hindu temple embedded in a cave is what makes this attraction unique and exciting. Read on to find out everything you need to know about a trip to Batu Caves.

Batu Caves, Malaysia

  • A temple inside of a cave

Whilst Batu Caves is a popular attraction for tourists, it’s also a religious site for the Tamil Hindu community. In 1891, a leader of the Tamil Hindu community built a temple inside the caves. This temple is known today as the Temple Cave and is the most well-known cave. It’s the temple that most people initially think of when taking a trip to Batu Caves. After noting the fascinating shape of the entrance, the Indian leader decided to dedicate his shrine to Lord Murugan, the Hindu God of war. Hence the 42.7 meter (140 feet) high gold statue of Murugan standing at the foot of the leg-aching 272-step stairway.

  • The 5 Caves

What people don’t often realize is that there are actually more caves than just the main cave where the Cave Temple is located.

Ramayana Cave

This is the first cave you will see once you have exited the monorail. There is an entrance fee of 5 Ringgit ($1.19). Inside there are a few figures that portray the life story of Lord Rama, the 7th incarnation of God, Vishnu . The writings are in the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, so it’s difficult for non-speakers to understand the full story.

Cave Villas

Is a set of two caves that are inhabited by animals such as birds, iguana and tons of fish in the pool. Here you can also see numerous statues of Hindu Gods, and learn about their history. The cost to enter is 15 Ringgits ($3.58).

Temple Cave

This is the main cave that hosts a shrine and a chamber. As of 1892, thousands of Hindu devotees visit this cave as part of the Thaipusam Festival that is held annually at the end of January. Whilst the festival is a religious celebration, members of the public are more than welcome to attend. The entrance to this cave is free.

Unfortunately, as of 28 th January 2019, the cave is no longer accessible to the public. Prior to the closure, tourists had the option to take a guided tour of the cave to search for the trapdoor spider (one of the rarest spiders in the world) snakes, bats and other critters that inhabit the cave.

Pro tip: The Batu Caves complex is open daily from 7 am until 9 pm.

Inside the Batu Caves, Malaysia

As the cave is considered a religious site, a modest dress code strictly applies. For women particularly, it is important to cover your shoulders and to cover your knees. If you happen to forget, there’s a stall at the foot of the stairway where you can rent a sarong. The cost of rental is 5 Ringgits and you will be refunded 2 Ringgits when you return it.

  • Climbing the stairs & photo opportunities

Initially, the climb up the stairs looks exhausting. But since the stairs were painted in all the colors of the rainbow; hues of red, orange, green, purple and more, in August 2018, the climb up is quite pleasant as there are ample photo opportunities along the way.  However, be aware of the Macaque monkeys. They truly live up to their stereotype of being cheeky monkeys. They will have no qualms about snatching your food, or even your sunglasses from your face. A word of advice would be to avoid the monkeys, however as cute as they may look, as a trip to the hospital for a rabies jab might become a possibility. So, don’t feed or tease them.

  • Shopping & food around the caves

Aside from exploring the caves and making the rewarding climb up the 272 steps, there are plenty of places to indulge in a spot of shopping, treat yourself to a well-deserved drink, or even tuck into an appetizing curry. At the foot of the stairway, you will find shops selling little trinkets such as magnets and key-rings. Whilst opposite the car park, there are small Indian restaurants selling smoothies and every Indian food you can think of. Whilst the prices of meals are slightly higher than in central Kuala Lumpur, the prices are still reasonable for the portion sizes. For example, a dhosi with dips costs 7 Ringgit.

  • Getting to Batu Caves from Kuala Lumpur

Luckily for those that prefer to explore at their own pace, Batu Caves are just 13 km from central Kuala Lumpur and are conveniently located on the last stop of the blue line on the monorail. Once you arrive in Kuala Lumpur , you will realise that using the monorail couldn’t be more efficient. All you need to do is locate the one nearest to where you’re staying and purchase your token at the kiosk or self-serving machines. Be aware though, if you’re accommodation is not along the blue line, you will need to change stations.  Prices of the metro depend entirely on the length of the trip but either way, you won’t pay more than a few Ringgits per journey. For example, if you’re staying at the new and modern Dorms KL2 , you can take the brown or orange line at Plaza Rakyat to Bandaraya for 1.20 Ringgits (29 Cents). You will then need to cross over the road to Bank Negara station, which is along the blue line that goes directly to Batu Caves. This ticket costs just 2.30 Ringgits (55 Cents) and the journey takes 20 minutes.

If you’ve not yet conquered the monorail system in Kuala Lumpur, then you also have the option to take a day trip with a tour company, who will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off. Prices for half-day trips range from $14 upwards.

Jake of Untold Wanderlust taking the metro to the Batu Caves

To conclude, a visit to Kuala Lumpur wouldn’t be complete without taking a visit to Batu Caves. With the monorail providing an effortless way of reaching one of Malaysia’s top attractions for minimal costs, there’s no excuse not to visit. Once you arrive, you can admire the colorful stairway and visit the fascinating Cave Temple for FREE, before treating yourself to a spot of shopping and a delicious Indian lunch. Just remember to dress modestly for your trip and not to bring nuts or bananas for the cheeky inhabitants.

Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia’s Top Tourist Attraction

Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia’s Top Tourist Attraction

The distinctive Batu Caves is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Located around 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur, the impressive temple complex is a must-visit place while you’re in Malaysia. The caves were used as a refuge by the native Temuan or Besisi individuals (a tribe community) in ancient times. One of the biggest Hindu complexes outside India, Batu Caves attracts visitors from all over the world. Batu Caves is famous for its 140 feet tall Murugan statue, the tallest figurine in the world. It is also known as the Sri Subramanian Swamy Temple in Kuala Lumpur.

Here is more on this major Kuala Lumpur sightseeing place.

Batu Caves - Architecture

The oldest limestone mountain hill, Batu Caves has a series of caves and cave temples. The first thing, you will notice when reaching the caves are the stairs with 272 steps, taking people to the caves. Earlier, they used to have grey colours, but now they have been changed into the most colourful sights for visitors. These stairs have all the shades of the rainbow, providing some great backgrounds for photography. Batu Caves feature diverse idols related to mythology.  Also, you can get the chance to see bats and long-tailed macaques. Inside the Batu caves, there is an audio tour presented for the tourists. Every year, during Thaipusam, a Hindu festival, the Batu caves attract millions of devotees from all over the world. This eight-hour-long event of music and ceremony leaves offerings in front of the huge statue of Lord Murugan in Batu Caves.

Batu Caves History

The history of this Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur can be traced back to the year 1891.  The famous Tamil businessman Sri Thamboosamy Pillai, who built the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur, has also raised this famous Lord Subramanya Swamy Temple in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Pillai was an Indian trader who was brought up in Singapore and finished studies at the Raffles Institution. In Batu Caves, the statue of Lord Murugan was first opened for public sight in January 2006 in Thaipoosam month. The Thaipoosam is a festival celebrated for Lord Murugan on the full moon day of Tamil month “Thai”. The temple complex has three main caves and some smaller caves. The main and the biggest one is Lord Murugan’s temple cave, having a high ceiling at 400m from the ground level.

Batu Caves Highlights

There are some major caves inside the Batu Caves, including Cave Villa, Dark Cave, Ramayana Cave, and Temple Cave.

Temple Cave

The centerpiece at Batu Caves, the Temple Cave, is guarded by an ornate 42.7m tall Lord Murugan statue. The wooden stairs have been replaced by 272 concrete steps. The Temple Cave is known as the most photographed sight of Malaysia. It has two massive caverns connected by 56 steps. The first cavern illustrates the six abodes of Murugan, the Hindu God of War and the son of Shiva. The second cavern depicts Sri Valli Deivanai, the wife of Lord Murugan. The celebration of the pious Thaipusam festival attracts many devotees to this cave.

Ramayana Cave

Located at the end of the steep walls of the mountain, the Ramayana Cave is the most stunningly embellished cave in Batu Caves. It is colourfully lit on the inside, making the cave look more interesting for visitors. Ramayana Cave has beautifully designed statues, narrating the tale of the most loved Hindu scripture - Ramayana. There is a giant statue of Kumbhkaran inside the cave. Also, a 50 Feet tall Hanuman Statue and a dedicated Hanuman Temple are other attractions for devotees here. Climbing the stairs to the temple will take you to naturally occurring Shiv Lingam.

One of the most famous caves in Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, the Dark Cave, is on top of the stairs. Visitors have to pay entry fees to visit this cave. The Dark Cave is home to some rare spiders, insects, and bats however they are not easily noticeable. This cave can be visited with a guide. Known as the wildest of all the caves, Dark Cave is a 6,500-ft underground stretch, having stunning limestone formations. The tour to this cave requires people to be physically fit as some crawling is needed due to some of the cave’s narrower sections.

Situated at the foot of Batu Caves, Cave Villa is also a colourful attraction, having beautiful statues, lights, and paintings that are brilliantly painted. The Cave Villa is an ideal place to learn more about Hinduism. However, a part of Cave Villa also consists of a collection of reptiles and other animals.

Moreover, there is an Art Gallery Cave, situated across an attractive set of bridges. The Art Gallery has many wall paintings and Hindu carvings that describe the story of Lord Murugan and many other Hindu deities. Here, you will have to pay a small fee for entry.

Batu Caves Temple - Opening Hours

The caves are open from 7 am to 8 pm, all through the year. However, most people avoid visiting it during weekends as it can be crowded. Those who want to experience the Thaipusam festival should visit these caves during January and February months.

You can expect a warm and humid atmosphere at the temple complex. So, you should be prepared, especially as you will be climbing steps at Batu Caves. Keep sun protection and a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Things to Do at the Batu Caves

Here are a few things you should do during your visit to Batu Caves and make the most of your time here.

Rock Climbing

It can be a surprise for many people as rock climbing at religious places is uncommon. However, it is easy to fulfil your wish to experience some adventurous activities during your visit to the Batu Caves Murugan temple. Owing to rough and extensive limestone hills, the area around the caves has become a major spot for rock climbing. Most of the climbing tracks are situated on the northeastern part of the mountain, before the temple’s entrance. However, rock climbing is an activity that you must arrange in advance by seeking help and guidance from local rock climbers.

The region around the Batu Caves is also perfect to enjoy other activities like hiking and adventurous wandering around.

Photography at Cave Staircase

The steep and colourful staircase, situated against the lush greenery and limestone rock, has become a popular spot for photography. In 2018, the stairs were vividly repainted, making the temple complex even more photogenic. Initially built from wood in 1920, the 272 stairs were later changed into concrete stairs to manage heavy foot traffic.

Enjoy Local Food

There are many small and big restaurants and stalls at the entrance of the Batu Caves. Here, you can find a variety of food and drinks at the best prices. So, if you feel hungry while visiting and roaming around the temple complex, get some delicious food at these stalls.

Batu cave is an enthralling place to be visited by both religious and non-religious people alike. It is a place tourists should not miss on their next trip to Malaysia. However, when visiting Batu Caves, you are sure to come across many macaque monkeys. As on every tourist attraction, monkeys are known for their naughty behaviour, it is wise to be careful while you are around them in Batu Caves.

So, if you love exploring natural and historical attractions, Batu Caves must be on the itinerary of your Kuala Lumpur tour package . You will love the magnificent sight of these caves.

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. 1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
