This trip was amazing! Great communication with us and the tour was modified when we struggled to get our Chile visa - thankyou so much for the support! Argentina is an amazing place, everything flowed like clock work. Argentina has been our favourite country so far; amazing people (honestly happy and larger than life), the food is so tasty and the nature (you cant compete with Patagonia!). Left this tour incredibly happy and sad it ended. Highly recommended.

South American Landscapes - Argentina & Chile

My husband and I did the South American landscape tour, Argentina and Chile. It was Amazing!!!! The tour as is has a great itinerary but I had a few extra things I wanted to add. Wendy was able to add my excursions and arrange all the transportation. Everything was so well organized the rides and tours were always on time and always in contact with you. We loved our trip. Would definitely plan a trip with them again!!!

Patagonia Adventure Tour (15 Nights) Tour

Patagonia Adventure Tour (15 Nights)

I would have given a 10/10 on both Tours, Patagonia and the Andes Chile to Buenos Aires. The only weakest link is the accommodation in Mendoza. I have been to many places around the globe, but this one is the most disgusting and filthy I have been so far. Other than that, the tour is well organized, attention to details. Highest mark to Hi Travel Argentina and a big thank you to Ailen, Stephanie and staff. Hi Travel Argentina is on top of everything, logistic, caring and go extra miles to accommodate us. They also arranged to get us a refund for a big mistake made by one of the hostels. I will definitely recommend this amazing tour to my friends and family. Ted

This trip was very good. Accommodation was also good however in El Calafate we were a long way from the township. Everywhere else was within easy walking distance. The tours included in this trip were well operated and most enjoyable. The public bus from Puerto Arenas to Ushuaia was not what we expected. Beautiful coach for the first 5 0r 6 hours. Then the bus was stopped and we all had to get off. The 4 people on the Say Hueque trip were told to get in a car and we were taken to the town Rio Grande. We didnt know what was going on and just told we would catch a local mini bus in an hour from there to Ushuaia. Very strange and no explanation given. This bus company should be investigated to see what is happening. I would definitely recommend this trip however, would suggest a stay in Terres del paine for an extra day to improve it.

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 9 days Tour

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 9 days

Overall it was good but I was very disappointed as on the itinerary it had we would have lunch at a ranch but instead we had lunch at a local restaurant which was average. The ranch burnt down over 3 months before our tour started and they knew this so the itinerary should have been updated and we should have been advised. A few other inconsistencies in the itinerary provided as well

Trips to Patagonia Reviews

Overall, I thought this was a pretty great trip package! The BIG highlights are of course Mount Fitz Roy and Laguna Torre (El Chalten), Glacier Perito Moreno (El Calafate), and Base Las Torres (Torres Del Paine, Chile). I personally thought the initial hike of the trip though (on the 2nd day) called Laguna Amarga was a little basic, short, and not overly fascinating or challenging and maybe could've been replaced with something else? But that said, we still saw some guanacos (llama-like animals) on the path and the bulk of the Los Torres park mountains in the distance during that hike. So I guess it was okay. In terms of the accommodations, I was very very pleased with the selection, especially the first and last hotels (in Puerto Natalas, Chile, and El Chalten, Argentina). They were all pretty bouge-y / snazzy looking places with nice amenities. I wish the hotel in El Chalten had better / faster wifi though. As a side note, I bought a cell data plan for Argentina and only had Edge (slower than 3G) in El Chalten and there were also no cell service on the bus rides / roads between cities. So better and faster wifi especially in this last location would've been nice. In terms of the flow, organization, and execution of the itinerary and this travel company, A+, I must say! Drivers there to pick you up from airport / bus and transfer to hotel, waiting for you with a name card in hand. Good communication from the tour companies if there was a change in itinerary for the following day. Hotels were well picked with breakfasts included. Final thoughts? Look, if you wanted to do all the above highlights for hiking in a more budget-friendly way, sure you can find a way to do it. You can buckle down, search the places, organize the accomodations, stay at cheaper hostels, pay for taxis as you go, organize the bus transfers, not have guides on the hikes and do them all solo, etc. Therefore, you might pay a hair bit more in taking this package than you would if you figured out and just did everything yourself, but you do feel like you're living in the heart of luxury once your done the hikes. And the views and open-air, scenic experiences of those hikes are pretty great, too! 4.5 out of 5 stars

Hiker in red jacket in the mountains of Patagonia, on a clear sunny day with a few clouds

Sandwiched between two oceans and sprawled across two countries. Patagonia is as ‘end-of-the-world’ as it gets.

Advancing glaciers, gushing waterfalls, snow-topped granite pillars…it’s no wonder Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over this beautiful slice of South America . Where else can you hike past herds of guanaco, hear giant shards of ice crash into the sea, sail the Beagle Channel past unique flora and fauna, and drop by the world’s southernmost city? If anywhere makes you feel small, it’s Patagonia. Adventure to the end of the world and appreciate our planet at its most wild and spectacular.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

These are the basics you will need to bring for an active adventure in Patagonia:

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

The Best Patagonia Itinerary: 7 to 10 Days in Patagonia [Or More]

Patagonia is a fascinating place. With its wild weather, beautiful hiking trails, and picturesque glaciers, it’s an adventure playground.

I loved every minute of my trip to the region. But before I arrived, I had hundreds of questions (which you probably do too)!

“How many days in Patagonia?”

“Which is better: Chile or Argentina Patagonia”

“Can I visit Patagonia without a tour?”

Now that I’ve been there and spent over a month exploring the Chilean and Argentinian side, I’ve crafted this perfect 10 day itinerary for Patagonia.

It’s easily customizable to a 7 day itinerary but also includes other places to visit if you have 2 weeks in Patagonia.

10 Day Patagonia itinerary overview

  • Day 1-3: El Chalten (2 nights)
  • Day 4-5: El Calafate (2 nights)
  • Day 6-10: Torres Del Paine (5 nights)

My Patagonia highlights

My overall favorite place in Patagonia: It’s an easy one! I loved the charming town of El Chalten in Argentinan Patagonia.

Most beautiful place: I still can’t get over how stunning Perito Moreno Glacier is! I did this Mini Trekking glacier tour from El Calafate, and it was one of my Patagonia highlights.

Best multi-day hike in Patagonia: The W Trek in Torres Del Paine, Chile. This hike allowed me to experience the real Patagonia. I had all four seasons in one day and saw landscapes I never knew existed.

Patagonia trip itinerary

Day 1: Buenos Aires to El Chalten: Hike to Mirador Condores

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, El Chalten is a small hiking town home to some of the best trails, which I’ve detailed in my El Chalten hiking guide.

It’s my favorite place in all of Patagonia. And if there’s one destination you cannot miss, it’s El Chalten.

If you’re coming from Buenos Aires, you’ll be traveling for most of the day. When you arrive in El Chalten, drop off your bags and put on your hiking shoes!

Mirador de los Condores is a quick and easy hike that’s perfect for day 1 of your Patagonia itinerary. It offers the best views of El Chalten and takes roughly 2 hours to complete.

Top tip: The sun sets after 9 pm in Patagonia during the summer, so you’ll have more than enough time for this hike, so long as you arrive before 6 pm.

How to get to El Chalten

There is no airport in El Chalten. The closest airport is in El Calafate, which services flights from Buenos Aires, Bariloche, and Mendoza in Argentina.

You’ll then need to take a 3.5-hour bus from El Calafate to El Chalten. I booked my bus through Bus Bud . You can check prices and availability here .

Best things to do in Patagonia

Where to stay in El Chalten

Patagonia is generally a lot more expensive than the other destinations in Argentina.

If you leave it too late, the more affordable options will be taken, and you’ll have to settle for something a bit further from town or out of your budget.

Apart Guillaumet is a basic accommodation option that ticks all the boxes, including an affordable price.

If you’re looking for something more luxurious, you can’t go wrong with Chalten Suites Hotel . There’s an onsite restaurant, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from the trails.

Day 2: Laguna de Los Tres hike (El Chalten)

Laguna De Los Tres is the crown jewel of El Chalten. It’s a turquoise blue lake at the base of the famous Fitz Roy mountain and offers picture-perfect views.

It’s a challenging 9-hour return hike to get from El Chalten to Laguna de los Tres. You’ll need to be prepared with food, water, and a lot of energy.

It was the hardest day hike I did in Patagonia (but so worth it).

You don’t need a guide for this hike or any others in El Chalten, as the routes are easy to follow and clearly marked. Read my guide on getting to Laguna de Los Tres for more details.

Argentina or Chile Patagonia

Day 3: Laguna Torre (El Chalten)

Laguna Torre is a vast glacier lake filled with small icebergs. The Cerro Torre Mountain range forms the backdrop and looks like something from a postcard.

The Laguna Torre hike is equally impressive as Laguna de los Tres. The difference? It’s a lot easier! It takes around 6 hours to complete, but most is a flat trail.

Try to start your hike before sunrise to beat the crowds. This will also ensure you’re back in El Chalten by lunchtime.

After the hike, hop on a bus back to El Calafate and spend the night here. It’s time to check out the most incredible glacier in the world!

Other things to do in El Chalten

If one hike in El Chalten is enough for you, or if you have more than 7 days in Patagonia, here are a few other amazing things to do around El Chalten.

White river rafting: I went river rafting in El Chalten and loved it. The rapids aren’t too intense, but they offer a nice break from all the hiking.

Rent a car and make a day trip to Lago del Desierto: Lago del Desierto is a beautiful lake surrounded by forests with picturesque mountain views. Check out Glacier Huemul on the way.

Best day hikes in Patagonia

Day 4: Perito Moreno Glacier (El Calafate)

Today, you’ll wake up in El Calafate and make an exciting day trip to one of the most incredible sights I’ve ever seen, Perito Moreno Glacier.

It’s an iconic Patagonia attraction, and its beauty completely blew me away.

Perito Moreno Glacier is located in Los Glaciares National Park, about an hour’s drive west of El Calafate. There are a few ways to experience the glacier.

How to visit Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno walkways: If you’re on a budget, you can book a bus to the park and visit the walkways only. These comprise of 4 km of interconnected paths that offer panoramic views of the glacier.

Glacier trekking tour: I did this Minitrekking tour , which was well worth the money. Not only do you get to walk on the actual glacier, but it also includes a short boat trip. You’ll have some time to explore the walkways.

Ferry around Perito Moreno: The Minitrekking tour sells out fast, so a good backup option is this boat cruise , which allows you to get closer to the glacier.

Regardless of what tour you do, visiting Perito Moreno Glacier will be expensive! But it’s worth every cent.

Book your spot here , as there is limited availability.

A man walking on a glacier in Patagonia

Where to stay in El Calafate

El Calafate is a bigger town than El Chalten, so your accommodation options are greater. It also means that some are closer to the main road than others.

I stayed at Folk Hostel , and it’s a great choice for backpackers. It’s close to the bus terminal, but you’re going to have to walk a bit further to get to the main town center.

Mirador del Lago Hotel has gorgeous large rooms with beautiful views. The breakfasts are exceptional, and it’s perfect for those looking for a more comfortable and luxurious stay.

Day 5 Patagonia itinerary: Puerto Natales

For the second half of your itinerary for Patagonia, there are a few places to visit.

I recommend crossing the border and checking out the Chilean side. You can then fly out of Santiago in Chile rather than crossing the border back into Argentina.

But depending on your time and interests, you may want to visit Bariloche or Ushuaia on the Argentinian side instead.

Where would I go? It’s an easy one! Torres Del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. This park is home to the famous O and W Treks.

Itinerary for Patagonia

How to get from El Calafate (Argentina) to Puerto Natales (Chile)

Puerto Natales is the gateway to Chilean Patagonia.

Getting here involves an easy border crossing, which you’ll need to do via a bus from El Calafate in Argentina to Puerto Natales in Chile.

The bus drive takes 5 hours but allow for an extra hour at immigration. The buses are extremely comfortable, with large reclining seats. Check prices and availability here.

However, the town of Puerto Natales isn’t as charming as some other towns in Patagonia. So rather spend your first night in Puerto Natales and the rest in the national park.

Where to stay in Puerto Natales

I stayed at El Patagonico Hostel , a fantastic hostel in the heart of Puerto Natales. They offer private and dorm rooms and a big kitchen and lounge area. The price is hard to beat, and they’ll store your bags for free while you do the W Trek.

If you’re looking for a hotel with lake views, you can’t go wrong with The Singular Patagonia Hotel . The elegant rooms are some of the best you’ll find in Puerto Natales, and the staff are outstanding.

Day 6 – 10: W Trek (Torres Del Paine)

The W Trek is a 4-night/5-day trek through Torres Del Paine. It’s not as challenging as you think and can be done independently.

But the notorious Patagonia weather will affect your experience. During my W Trek (which you can read about here ), I experienced the most intense weather conditions.

Sunshine, rain, snow!

I was blown over numerous times while walking through French Valley and had to get down on my haunches to catch my breath. It rained heavily one day. The next, it was sunny and hot.

But despite not having perfect conditions and spectacular views throughout, braving this weather was one of my highlights. I got to experience Patagonia at its finest – the raw and harsh conditions were unlike anything I’d experienced before.

Patagonia travel guide

Accommodation on W Trek

If you’re doing the W Trek without a guide, you’ll need to organize your own accommodation. You can choose mountain huts or campsites, but the prices differ substantially.

Bookings open in July every year, and it’s a scramble to get a spot.

Two companies manage the accommodation along the W Trek: Vertice and Fantastico Sur (also known as Las Torres).

Booking your accommodation for the W Trek is a serious mission and highly time-consuming. But it’s the only downside of doing the W Trek independently.

Alternative option: Day trips to Torres Del Paine

Because of limited availability at campsites, your timing, or simply the fact that multi-day hikes are not everyone’s cup of tea, you can also visit Torres Del Paine on day trips from Puerto Natales.

If you’re choosing this option, it’s best to hire a car or take a day tour like this one .

Here are some day trip options:

how many days in Patagonia

1. Mirador Las Torres (The Towers)

Mirador las Torres is an iconic site in Torres Del Paine. It’s the most popular section of the W Trek and gets busy with day trippers.

Getting to The Towers is a 9-hour return hike that starts challenging and does not get easier. The views are magnificent, though.

This is one of the best day tours from Puerto Natales to The Towers. Check price and availability here.

Top tip: If you’re following my Patagonia 10 day itinerary and struggled with the hike to Laguna de los Tres in El Chalten, skip Mirador Las Torres and opt for one of the below day hikes in Torres Del Paine instead.

2. French Valley

French Valley is the most picturesque day hike in Torres Del Paine National Park.

You’ll need to get on the first bus from Puerto Natales to the park and take the ferry to Refugio Paine Grande. From there, it’s a 2.5-hour hike to Refugio Italiano, which sits at the heart of French Valley.

3. Glacier Grey

Glacier Grey is the biggest glacier in Torres Del Paine and forms part of the western section of the W Trek.

You’ll need to catch the same catamaran as you would if you’re doing the French Valley day hike. But instead of following the trail that leads to French Valley on the right, you’ll go north to Refugio Grey.

Visiting Grey Glacier on a day trip is an ambitious yet achievable goal if you’re a fast hiker. It’s best to rather spend the night at Refugio Grey and head back to town the next day.

Top tip: If you’re planning a 7 day Patagonia itinerary and can only do 2 day hikes in Torres Del Paine, I suggest doing French Valley and Mirador Las Torres (The Towers).

Walking to Grey Glacier in Torres del Paine, Patagonia

Other places to visit in Patagonia

Some travelers may want to avoid the border crossing from Argentina to Chile.

If this is the case for you, there’s the option to stay on the Argentinian side and explore more of Patagonia from there.

Bariloche is the lake district of Argentinian Patagonia. It’s strikingly different from all other places on this Patagonia trip itinerary.

Bariloche is ideal for travelers who want a break from hiking and prefer a mix of nature and comfort.

It’s best to spend 3 days in Bariloche and possibly even a night in San Martin de los Andes.

Day 1 in Bariloche

Try to arrive in Bariloche by lunchtime, so you have the afternoon to explore the town. The streets are lined with alpine-styled buildings, and the Centro Civico (the town square) is incredibly picturesque.

The Bariloche lakefront is a great place to hang out. It overlooks Nahuel Huapi Lake and is calming and serene.

A beautiful walking path leads from the Bariloche sign along the water’s edge. It passes a skate park and other sites, leading to an iconic Cathedral.

Bariloche vs El Chalten Patagonia

How to get to Bariloche

If you’re skipping the Chilean Patagonia side, or if you have more time in Patagonia and want to add Bariloche to your itinerary, you’ll need to get to Bariloche from El Calafate.

The easiest way is via a quick 2 hour flight between the towns.

Where to stay in Bariloche

Bariloche is a lot bigger than most Patagonia towns. There are many different areas to base yourself in. Unless you stay in the town center, you’ll need to use public buses or rent a car to get around.

I stayed at Trip Select Bariloche , just a short walk from the main road in Bariloche. The private rooms are simple yet comfortable and are great value for money.

Llao Llao Resort is one of the most luxurious places to stay in Bariloche. The location is everything, surrounded by mountain peaks with incredible views from every window. But you’ll need a car to get here.

Deciding where to stay can be overwhelming, so here’s my comprehensive guide to the best areas and accommodations in Bariloche.

Day 2 in Bariloche: Llao Llao National Park & Cerro Campanario

Llao llao national park.

An hour west of Bariloche lies Parque Municipal Llao Llao. It’s home to gorgeous hiking trails and spectacular views.

The most popular trail leads to Cerro Llao Llao, a panoramic viewpoint. You’ll walk up a steep zig-zag trail for 30 minutes to get here.

You can combine this with the Sendero de los Arrayanes trail. This loop track meanders through Parque Municipal Llao Llao, passing lush walkways and the picturesque Lake Moreno. It’s a flat trail and an excellent option for kids.

A man sitting on a bench overlooking a lake at one of the most beautiful places in Patagonia

Cerro Campanario

After visiting Llao Llao National Park, make your way to Cerro Campanario. Here, you’ll find the most impressive viewpoint in Bariloche.

The best part? There’s no strenuous hike involved (unless you opt to walk instead of taking the chair lift to the top).

There are numerous viewpoints at the peak, and you’ll have 360-degree views overlooking the lake district. There’s also a small cafe and bar.

Day 8 in Bariloche: 7 Lakes drive or Refugio Frey hike

For the final day of your itinerary for Patagonia, you have two options. You can either explore the iconic 7 Lakes route or do the popular full-day hike to Refugio Frey.

7 Lakes Drive

The 7 Lakes route is one of the most scenic drives in all of Patagonia.

It starts in a lake-side town outside Bariloche called Villa la Angostura and goes north to San Martin de Los Andes.

Throughout the 7 Lakes Drive, you’ll pass seven stunning glacial lakes, dense forests, and picturesque mountain landscapes.

If you have the time, spend a night in San Martin de Los Andes. It will break up the long drive and is a quaint town to explore.

But if you only have a few days in Bariloche, you’ll need to squeeze this into one day, although two days are preferable.

This full-day tour from Bariloche stops at all the lakes. It’s an excellent option for solo travelers or those who would prefer not to rent a car.

Bariloche Patagonia

Hike to Refugio Frey

I highly recommend the Refugio Frey trek if you’d rather spend your day hiking around Bariloche as opposed to enjoying the views from a car.

It starts at Cerro Cathedral, which is Argentina’s largest ski resort. The trail ends at Refugio Frey, which sits in front of Laguna Toncek and is surrounded by craggy peaks.

The 22 km return hike takes 8 hours and is more challenging than the other hikes around Bariloche.

Best time to visit Patagonia

The best time to visit Patagonia is from October to April. The days are warmer and longer, providing ideal conditions for hiking and exploring.

Keep in mind that October and November will still be cold, and the glacier lakes may be iced up.

December through February are the best months to visit. But they’re also the busiest.

For less crowds and great weather, March is the ideal month to plan your Patagonia travel itinerary.

best time to visit Patagonia

How many days should I spend in Patagonia?

You’ll need at least 7 days in Patagonia. But if you want to travel slower and visit all the attractions, you’ll need 2 weeks.

Which is better: Chilean or Argentina Patagonia

I loved Argentinian Patagonia! It’s home to my favorite places in Patagonia and has incredible hiking trails. It’s also a lot cheaper than the Chilean side.

Which is the best month to visit Patagonia?

If I could choose any month, it would be March. This is the end of high season, so the crowds are fewer. But the weather is still optimal, and you can expect long, sunny days.

Where do you fly into for Patagonia?

You can either fly into Buenos Aires in Argentina or Santiago in Chile. To get to the Patagonia region from there, you must fly to El Calafate or Bariloche in Argentina. Or Puerto Natales in Chile.

How to visit Patagonia

Final thoughts on my itinerary for Patagonia

I spent 7 months backpacking South America, and some of my best memories are from Patagonia.

But remember one thing about the region.

You can do all the planning and preparation for your trip, but unfortunately, you can’t prepare for the weather. It can be unforgiving, even during the summer months, which are said to be the best times to visit.

But no matter what Patagonia brings, embrace it. Enjoy the stunning scenery and take in the power of Mother Nature.

Choose Your Dates

The best time to visit Patagonia is from December to March, which is summer in the southern hemisphere. Although gusty Patagonian winds can pick up at any time, this is when the weather is mildest with mostly blue skies. Temperatures are generally cooler in November and April, but the former brings spring flowers and the latter is lovely for fall foliage.

You can take direct flights to Patagonia Argentina from Buenos Aires or to Chilean Patagonia from Santiago de Chile. There are also international flights and ground transportation to travel between Argentinean and Chilean Patagonia.

The best time is from October to April (our summer). The weather is more pleasant for outdoor activities. However, Patagonia has a variety of activities available all year round!

From north to south, the highlights are Bariloche, the capital of the Lake District, Península Valdés, the most important wildlife reserve of Argentine Patagonia where whales come every year to breed their calves, El Calafate, where people go to visit the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén, the Argentine capital of trekking and, finally, Ushuaia, best known as the city “at the end of the world”.

Regardless of when you travel, bring warm clothes! Even if you travel during the Argentine summer and are blessed with a beautiful, warm day of sunshine, the winds can come out of nowhere and virtually blow you away in no time. So make sure you wear windproof/north-facing jackets, a hat, gloves, long pants, and scarves. Basically, warm clothes.

Yes, it is important to have the right clothes to enjoy Patagonian nature. The weather can vary a lot on the same day and you can have the four seasons in 24 hours!

The best is to dress in layers, the weather changes a lot and it can be sunny and warm like a summer day, or it can rain, be windy, and even snow all on the same day! Wear shoes suitable for trekking, waterproof shoes are better. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a small backpack, and a water bottle that you can recharge.

What To Do in Patagonia?

When you hear the word “Patagonia” you think of a vast, virgin, and distant territory in the southern tip of South America. Shared by two countries, Chile and Argentina , Patagonia offers beautiful and spectacular landscapes. Although this region shares its name between these two countries, the landscapes are completely different.

Patagonia hosts stunning glaciers, and incredibly diverse wildlife, especially in Península Valdés.  The Perito Moreno Glacier , the penguins of Ushuaia, and the most reputed hiking trails of El Chaltén add to the highlights Patagonia charms travelers.

Chile on the other hand is known by the fjords who many have sailed. From Puerto Montt to the archipelagos of Chiloe, Chonos and Aysen, and the mythical city of Castro, Chilean Patagonia offers different landscapes from Argentina.

However, there is one place in Chilean Patagonia that overshadows any other destination,  Chile’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine.  With its three majestic pink and white granite towers guard, the park welcomes hundreds of hikers every day during summer.

To sum up, weather permitting, Patagonia is an all-in-one destination that offers something for everyone! You can choose between active trips, hiking journeys, or even family vacations to discover the best of Patagonia.

Best destinations to combine in patagonia.

Patagonia features different regions and natural attractions. It is divided into the lake district, the coastline of Península Valdés where most of the Patagonian wildlife can be found, and the southernmost Patagonia which comprises Ushuaia, El Calafate, and Torres del Paine National Park.

El Calafate, Argentina

Known as “the capital of glaciers”, El Calafate, is one of the most popular destinations in Patagonia. It was named after a typical blueberry that grows in the area (the legend says whoever eats a Calafate blueberry will always return to the city).

It features the best of Patagonia in Argentina , giant glaciers, icy lakes, remote estancias, and no shortage of breathtaking views accompanying outdoor excursions such as trekking, kayaking, and horse riding. This is a small city, really easy to get around on foot, with beautiful views of Argentino Lake.

The nearest airport has good flight frequency, this is the easiest way to reach El Calafate. The city and its glaciers (around 47 in the park) were discovered at the end of the XIX century.

Today, El Calafate offers the famous Perito Moreno Glacier boat trips in Argentino Lake, day tours to Patagonia ranches to learn about the rural culture, visits to El Chaltén and Mount Fitz Roy to enjoy amazing views and adventure hikes and other activities.

El Chaltén, Argentina

Founded in 1985, El Chaltén is a little mountaineering village located inside the Glaciers National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Argentine Patagonia. For many years this secluded place remains the unexplored spot for intrepid travelers.

Today, though it manages to preserve its little-town ambiance, El Chaltén is visited by many people every year who enjoy hikes of different lengths and difficulty levels. Is in this isolated corner of Patagonia where the famous Mount Fitz Roy can be admired.

Mount Chaltén is another highlight near the village which was named after this colossal and sacred mountain for the Tehuelches, the natives of the region. Its summit, frequently covered by clouds, was called by the Tehuelches “Chaltén” which means “smoking mountain” in their language.

In 2015, Chaltén was declared “National Capital of Trekking”, but travelers can also enjoy other adventure activities like kayaking, horseback riding, and sailing.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Puerto Madryn was founded in 1865 by a 150 group of Welsh that established on the area in 1886. Welsh, Spanish and Italian immigrants worked together to build the railway that would connect Puerto Madryn to the city of Trelew. Is in Trelew where today the nearest airport is located.

Nowadays, the railway it’s no longer used, and many travelers fly to Trelew and stay in Puerto Madryn to visit the incredible natural reserve of Península Valdés, the most important wildlife hub of Patagonia .

The Southern Right Whale arrives at the coast of the Península (but can also be seen from the very coastline of Puerto Madryn!) once a year, between June and December. On the other hand, from October to April, large colonies of Magellan Penguins can be seen too, making this coastal region a favorite among both wildlife enthusiasts and those in search of a truly once-in-a-lifetime Argentine experience.

Bariloche, Argentina

San Carlos de Bariloche locates in the Argentine province of Río Negro at the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. In 1903, Francisco Moreno, an intrepid explorer, and scientist donated these lands to create the Nahuel Huapi National Park, the first in Argentina, and thus, Bariloche started to flourish.

Few people know that the city is entirely located inside the park, famous today for its stunning lakes and mountains . Plus, Bariloche neighbors the Andes Mountain Range and features some spectacular mountains to be climbed like the Tronador, actually, a non-active volcano.

Therefore, Bariloche is nowadays one of the most populated cities in Patagonia. It is the tourist hub for hiking or skiing, but also to taste the best artisanal chocolate and craft beer .

In addition, the city is one of the most essential scientific poles in America. Students come to Balseiro Atomic Center and Institute to follow Physics and Nuclear Engineering studies.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, best known as “the destination at the end of the world”. It is the southernmost tip of land in Argentina and a favorite destination for adventure traveling.

To clarify, actually Tierra de Fuego is an island, separated from the American continent by the Strait of Magellan. From Ushuaia, you can sail through the legendary Beagle Channel too, and visit Les Eclereurs lighthouse.

This is a popular outing because on the way travelers can spot islands covered by sea lions and cormorants. Moreover, you can hike in go kayaking in Tierra del Fuego National Park to enjoy a close encounter with the particular vegetation and wildlife of the region.

Torres del Paine, Chile

Torres del Paine National Park, created in 1959, is one of the most visited destinations in Chilean Patagonia. Its first inhabitants were the Tehuelches, a native community of skilled hunters.

With its 227,298 hectares, extended hiking trails, glaciers, lakes, and stunning mountains, the park hosts thousands of travelers each year. In 1978, the park was declared as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO , and the 8th wonder of the world in 2013 .

The “Torres del Paine” name refers to the three distinctive granite peaks of the Paine Mountain Range that soar more than 6,500 feet (nearly 2,000 meters) into the sky. The park welcomes more than 250,000 visitors every year and the 5-day “W” trek is the most famous hiking circuit inside the reserve.

Puerto Varas, Chile

Known as the ‘City of the Roses’, Puerto Varas locates is in the Lake District in southern Chile. It is located on the southwestern shore of the extensive Lake Llanquihue, which offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped and still active Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes.

Traditional German-style architecture characterizes the city. Puerto Varas is a great choice for open-air adventures, excellent kayaking and angling are among the many activities this city offers. Renting a bike in Puerto Varas and riding to the beautiful Petrohué waterfalls while enjoying the many lakeside beaches on the way is one of the unique experiences we recommend.

Puerto Natales, Chile

Puerto Natales is the nearest city to Torres del Paine National Park and features a nearby airport. Some of the highlights of Puerto Natales are the Milodón Cave, an archaeological visit that will make you travel 10,000 years into the past. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Ultima Esperanza fjord. In Puerto Natales, you can navigate to see the largest glaciers in Patagonia!

What Kind of People Patagonia Tours Suit Best?

For animal lovers.

Besides the great landscapes, another best thing about Patagonia it’s the native wildlife. On the Chilean side, the national park Torres del Paine is home to deer, foxes, swans , and solitary but still dangerous pumas that can be found chasing one of the funny-looking “cousins” of the llamas: the guanacos. Also, if you pay enough attention, you might see the Andean condor , known for being the largest bird on the continent.

Meanwhile, don’t think that the unstable weather and freezing temperatures of the end of the world have made it impossible for animals to survive: guanacos, rabbits, and aggressive beavers are all over Tierra del Fuego. The province is also one of the many penguin colonies of the region and if you jump on a boat, you may also get to see some Humpback whales.

For athletic

Those who can’t stay still for a long time and enjoy playing sports even during their vacations can find great opportunities for enjoying adventure tours in Patagonia. Kayaking through the amazing fjords, rivers, and lagoons of the Lake District, skiing at the end of the world or the breathtaking Chilean volcanoes, horseback riding on the Patagonian steppe, climbing, mountain biking, rafting … the possibilities are endless.

For not that sporty but enjoy beautiful sites

The region is also perfect for calm visitors who enjoy watching and listening to nature for hours without having to undergo a great physical effort. Besides, one of the most amazing points of Patagonia is standing still, waiting for you, and being approachable by boat.

Yes, we are talking about Perito Moreno Glacier . Just watching the five kilometers of width and 60 meters over sea level that features this breathtaking ice mass is a once-in-a-lifetime experience impossible to forget.

The region is also perfect to take cruises that cross the fjords and glaciers of both countries. Another interesting option is to grab a car in Chile and jump on the Austral road that ends in the idyllic Lake O’Higgins after getting the most out of the beautiful region of Aysen.

Meanwhile, on the Argentine side, one of the best drives is through the Lake District, where the stunning setting will make it impossible to resist not jumping out of the car a thousand times…

If you’re a cold-sensitive person

For those who are sensitive to cold, looking at the weather forecast can make them want to draw back from their adventure in Patagonia. It’s a huge mistake. It’s true that even if you arrive during the summer months (December-March), the temperatures will still be low and you’ll have to face fierce winds, but it’s worth it because it’s thanks to this unstable and harsh weather that this corner of the world has breathtaking scenery to offer.

Besides, there are plenty of places to take shelter and interesting indoor activities , like the Paleontology museum in the city of Trelew, where the dinosaurs will help you warm up. Still, you MUST stay outside as long as you can. Put on your best winter clothes, and don’t forget to cover your feet, hands, and head. We guarantee you: it’ll be worth it.

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

We enjoyed our trip very much

Sayhueque did an amazing job from start to finish.

You guys helped me provide my husband with a truly unforgettable experience for his 50th birthday, and I can’t say thank you enough.

The trip was really great, everything went smoothly and I had a great time! The organisation was great and I have nothing to really complain about.

I would rate this trip 9.5/10 and definitely recommend it to others if they wanted to go to Patagonia. The activities that you chose were very good and the organisation was great. Also because of the 24/7 emergency contact that responded very quickly. Felipe, our travel advisor was great help!

Thanks for everything

Our trip was fantastic - you and the team did a great job pulling together with very little notice. We will gladly use your company again and refer you to others. It turns out, a friend of ours used your company in 2021 (we found out afterward) and was also very happy.

Everything went according to plan perfectly. We were happy with all the accommodations, all were very clean; the guides & drivers were all wonderful, very nice & helpful on private tours; good on shared tours. Driver Franciso from P. Arenas airport to Torres Del Paine was great; made the trip interesting, had fun with Spanish/English - saw lots of wildlife, and made a few picture stops.. a fun journey.

Good job... we'll be back!

We had an incredible experience.

The only hiccup we had were the flights being overbooked and having to spend more time than needed at the airport. Overall, we loved all the excursions. We would 100% recommend Say Hueque.

- At Iguazu, we enjoyed having the private guided tour to learn more about the falls and Rodrigo was great. It would have been nice to have an extra hour or so at the end to walk around ourselves and revisit some of the falls- they were so beautiful and could have spent the whole day there watching them!

- For the hike at Torres del Paine, the guides were fantastic. We are just faster hikers and don’t typically hike in a group. I think for that excursion, having the option to take the bus there and do a hike on our own and bus back would have been nice.

- The museum was closed in Ushuaia for the penguin rookery tour. Would recommend scheduling that tour on the days the museum is open if possible. Either way, seeing those penguins so close was so much fun! They’re so cute!

- Wish we could have been there one extra day to watch Argentina win the World Cup while in Argentina! What a fantastic game!!!

Thanks again for all your assistance with this. We had a wonderful time and hopefully one day we can go back (we really want to combine the O and the W for a backpacking trip in Torres del Paine!)

All the guides and hotels were fantastic and we wish we had more time there, we really had the best honeymoon we could have asked for!

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

First, thank you so much for all the arrangements, the trip overall was wonderful, and we feel like we did manage to see the highlights of Southern Patagonia in the time we had available.

We were extremely pleased with all of the transfers, with only one exception, they were all on time, professional and courteous. The exception was in Ushuaia when we were waiting to be taken to the airport. We had received a message saying they would pick us up at 9:15 instead of 9:00, but when they hadn’t shown up, or we hadn’t heard from them by 9:30 we called a taxi. We were worried we might miss our flight. We did eventually hear from them, and they were apologetic, but even a message to the hotel earlier would have reassured us. As it was, we had no time to spare at the airport.

All of the tours you had arranged went as planned, again with one exception, but the error was caused by the hotel in Ushuaia, not your company or the tour company. We expected to go to the tour company’s office for the start of the tour, hike to Emerald Lake, but Altos Ushuaia gave us a message saying we would be picked up at the hotel. After waiting, texting, and two taxi rides we finally caught up with the shared tour, and felt badly about the inconvenience we caused to the other two people. It all worked out in the end, but it left us with a bad feeling about the hotel.

The only other tour I would say anything negative about was the day trip to Torres del Paine from El Calafate. While the scenery was absolutely beautiful, and we are glad we were able to see it, I wouldn’t recommend that tour. It took 16 hours: we were picked up at 6:30 and returned at 10:30pm. The red tape involved in the border crossings took up about three hours, and then again at the National Park headquarters. We knew the entrance fee was not included, and we were ready to pay, but even though they ask for the fee in US $, they will not accept cash, and our credit card was rejected, along with several of the others on the bus. In the end the tour guide paid for several of us with her credit card and we gave her the cash, but all that took more than an hour. The total amount of time we were allowed in the park was only about 2- 2 1/2 hours, which doesn’t justify the long, uncomfortable trip to get there and back.

Several of the tours were just spectacular, and we give very positive recommendations to the tour companies and the guides.

The hotels that were chosen for us were all comfortable and we enjoyed our stays. My only comment would be about Altos Ushuaia, which is very remote, and has a restaurant which is not open after breakfast until dinner at 7pm. It required taxi rides, which is fine, but a more centrally located hotel would have been more convenient.

Overall, we loved it, and have created some very special memories. I would not hesitate to recommend your company for anyone looking for a similar package!

On the road you’ll see: Lake Argentino, the biggest southernmost lake in Patagonia, and Lake Viedma, the largest Argentine lake formed by the melting of glaciers, in this case, Viedma Glacier. This lake leads to La Leona River, which connects both lakes, and where stands La Leona Road house, the place where the famous thieves, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid hid-out for a month. After discovering other rough gems of this particular landscape, you’ll reach El Chaltén, and your transportation will leave you at your hotel. El Chaltén is the top rated hiking destination in Argentina .This charming little village, located at the foot of Fitz Roy Mountain, surrounded by glaciers, lakes, rivers and forest, is the start point for most hiking trails. A paradise for climbers and hikers alike. Duration: 3 hours Included: transportation mentioned above, no guide. Note: keep in mind that the luggage should be equivalent to a bag up to 18k. Excess baggage will pay an extra charge.

Day 2: El Chalten - Full Day Lago del Desierto

A unique excursion to enjoy one of the most rugged areas of Patagonia. It is an unforgettable experience to explore nature with “the five senses”. From the wharf of Punta Sur sailed for about 50 minutes sighting the Huemul and Crestón glaciers. Choose to walk on one of the three perfectly marked trails of the Vespignani Glacier Reserve according to the difficulty. This afternoon you will board your bus back to El Calafate (shared service). The 3 hour long driving back will be a good opportunity to rest or just relax, enjoying the passing landscape at your window. Once you arrive at El Calafate, the bus will leave you at your hotel. It’s your chance to try the tender and exquisite Patagonian Lamb or a heavenly tasting Calafate ice-cream. Day 4: El Calafate - Full Day Perito Moreno Glacier & Navigation

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981 with home to 200 approximately glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the campo de hielo patagónico (Patagonian ice field), the largest ice field after Antarctica. You will travel 40 km (about 25 miles) from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park you will take the walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and get comfortably close to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Day 5: El Calafate / Puerto Natales

In the morning, you’ll make your way to the bus station to start your trip to Puerto Natales—Your Chilean journey is about to begin! Private transfers to the bus station are available at additional rates. Things to take into account: it’s important to be there half hour before the departure. Most hotels are walking distance from the bus terminal, but if you prefer to take a taxi, roughly you might spend usd 5/7. It is not allowed to take any fresh food, plants, seeds, etc. from Argentina to Chile. They are very strict, and fines can be high. If you are not sure if something is allowed or not, please declare it (they will provide you with a form) and they will inform you if you can carry it or not. After this 5 hour-long trip, you will have cross hundreds of kilometres of green landscapes dramatically situated between the mountains. Once you arrive to Puerto Natales the guardian Milodon -the last ground sloth that walked the Earth 5000 years ago- will wave its bronze hand at the entrance of this picturesque town. You’ll make your way to your hotel (most are few blocks away from the bus station) and have time to explore this small town, the base to visit the world famous Torres del Paine National Park. You can walk along the shores of Magellan Strait, or just relax in one of the little cafés of town while admiring its patchwork facade of colorful houses. At Torres del Paine National Park there are no shops, so Puerto Natales will be your last chance to buy provisions for the next day. Shops don’t provide plastic bags so if you buy something you’ll have to bring your own ecological bag or make some space in your day pack. Duration: 5 hours Included: bus ticket El Calafate - Puerto Natales Not included: transportation to/from the bus station at El Calafate and Puerto Natales Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 6: Puerto Natales - Full Day Torres del Paine

Today we’ll pick you up really early at your hotel (shared service) to take you to the first stop of this adventurous day: Milodon Cave, located 24 kilometers north of town. This natural monument is composed by three caverns and a rocky conglomerate called Silla del Diablo (Devil's chair), due its chairlike shape. Before getting to the cave, we will pass by La Silla del Diablo and learn about its mysterious legend...a story told by the oldest man in Patagonia who believed that the Devil appeared to those who came to look for him on the dark nights. We’ll keep on travelling to Torres del Paine National Park, and on the way you’ll get to see Sofia Lagoon, Prat Range, Porteño Lake, and the stunning Grey Lake viewpoint. You’ll go over Serrano Bridge to continue to Grey Lake sector, where you’ll have time to walk along the shore. Once you go back to the parking lot, we’ll take you to a restaurant to rest and have lunch (not included in our service). After lunch, we’ll head to Salto Grande sector. You’ll visit Nordenskjold Lake view point before continuing by a sinuous route to Amarga Lagoon area. Previously, we’ll make a stop at Paine turquoise waterfall, the source of which is Paine River. This is a full day trip to be in contact with nature and one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes of Chilean Patagonia. Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 8: Puerto Natales / El Calafate

Today you’ll make your way to the bus station of Puerto Natales to depart to Punta Arenas - shared service (we can also arrange transfer back to El Calafate on request - additional cost). Being there 30 minutes before the departure is the best to avoid any last minutes inconvenience. This is a 3-4 hour long trip in a standard bus through the steppe, crisscrossed by mountains and fjords waters. At your arrival to the bus station at Punta Arenas you’ll make your way to your hotel—you can walk or take a taxi for around 5-7 dollars. Punta Arenas is the Chilean southernmost city, sited at the Magellanic Strait, and the leading port for Antarctic cruises and scientific research. Before the construction of the Panama Canal, Punta Arenas was the most important maritime crossroad between the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, thus, the city grew as a commercial center surrounded by European-type buildings— It’s colorful houses, standing out from a backdrop of snow-capped mountains are a vision for sore eyes. What to do in Punta Arenas? You can enjoy the evening by taking a 3 hour long city tour to visit the Mirador Hill and get the most gorgeous views of Magellan Strait, and the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum to see the craft master pieces made by the Onas, Yaganes and other natives of the area. 8 of the best road trips in Patagonia: explore remote and iconic landscapes by car

Jan 27, 2022 • 12 min read

Road to Mount Fitz Roy, El Chalten village in Patagonia, Argentina.

From the most iconic long-distance routes to round-trip drives that can be done in a day, here are the best road trips in Patagonia © Puripat Wiriyapipat / Getty Images

Given the region’s vastness and the remoteness of many of its most scenic roads and destinations, road-tripping is the best way to explore Patagonia, particularly if you want to journey off the beaten track. While the main roads between towns are mostly paved, and even Chile’s Carretera Austral and Argentina’s Ruta 40 are no longer more pothole than road, you may still have to contend with challenging driving conditions: occasional landslides, muddy sections or a bumpy "washboard".

Things to know before you go

While a 4WD is not essential, a vehicle with high clearance is preferable – and essential on minor side routes. The best time to drive around is between October and April, as during the southern winter, some side routes may be closed by snow. Bear in mind that some routes cross the border between Chile and Argentina, so you’ll need special permission to cross borders from your rental company. Also, one-way drop-off fees are hefty, so plan your journey carefully. Here are nine of the best road trips in Patagonia (and Tierra del Fuego ), ranging from three hours to a couple of weeks.

Carretera Austral is Chile's most iconic drive

Start: Puerto Montt; end: Villa O’Higgins; distance: 760 miles (1223km); allow 10 days

The big one. The so-called "Southern Highway" is Chile’s most iconic drive that snakes south from Chile’s Lake District across a landscape of dense forest, snow-peaked mountains, volcanoes, glacial rivers, and misty fjords. A Pinochet-commissioned project in the 1970s, the road was supposed to tame the wilderness and help settle the isolated Aysén region. The southern section is still not paved, which makes travel more challenging. Be prepared for inclement weather and occasional delays (landslides, having to wait for car ferries, etc).

Start in Puerto Montt , the Lake District’s port city, take the first of four ferries, then pass through the salmon-farming town of Hornopirén, before taking two interconnecting ferries through the fjords, with a strip of land in between, to reach the southern half of Parque Nacional Pumalín Douglas Tompkins – a vast area of native forest, gifted to the state by the Tompkins philanthropists. Just south is Chaitén, half buried by the volcanic eruption of 2008 but since recovered, followed by the Villa Santa Lucía crossroads town; from here, you can detour to Futaleufú – Chile’s whitewater rafting capital. Passing through dense woodland, you reach the market town of La Junta, before arriving at picturesque, fjordside Puyuhuapi, famous for its hot springs. The road skirts the fjord and passes high-end fly-fishing lodges before the highest section of the Carretera Austral takes you over Queulat Pass, with mist-shrouded mountains looming ahead. Stretch your legs in Parque Nacional Queulat before following the hilly ribbon of road to Coyhaique , the largest town halfway along the Carretera Austral.

The southern half of the journey is even more remote, sweeping through the pioneer town of Villa Cerro Castillo, past the glacial Lago General Carrera, and through tiny Puerto Río Tranquilo – the jumping-off point for glacier hikes and boat trips to the Capilla de Mármol . Farther south, the ranching town of Cochrane is a good overnighter, and a convenient base for visiting Parque Nacional Patagonia – another Tompkins conservation project – before detouring off the main route to Caleta Tortel – a unique village with cypress boardwalks instead of streets. A final ferry crossing from Puerto Yungay, and narrow hairpin bends of a particularly precipitous stretch of road, with glimpses of forest-clad mountains and raging glacial river below, bring you to Villa O’Higgins, a small pioneer settlement at the end of the road. Then you can either retrace your steps or take a weekly ferry from Puerto Yungay to Puerto Natales , and adventure further in the south.

A car drives on a remote gravel road running through grassland

Ruta 40 is a legendary drive through Patagonia's iconic grassland

Start: El Calafate; end: Bariloche; distance: 1017 miles (1637km); allow two weeks

This is the other big one. Even bigger, in fact. Known fondly by Argentinians as La Cuarenta (The Forty), Ruta 40 has the same legendary status in Argentina as Route 66 in the States. Some 3246 miles (5224km) long, it stretches the entire length of Argentina, from Cabo Vírgenes in southeast Patagonia to the border with Bolivia. Even if you don’t drive the entire length you can experience the most remote and arguably most scenic section that’s particularly associated with Ruta 40’s rugged mystique, traversing the vast pampas (steppe) that stretch as far as the eye can see. But it’s not just endless grasslands, where you’ll spot occasional flocks of sheep and swift-footed ñandú (rhea); you’ll also never be far from the bristling of the Andes mountain range that marks the border between Chile and Argentina. Take your time (and not just because the southern section of Ruta 40 is still not completely paved).

Start in El Calafate – the jumping-off point for Argentina’s most accessible and spectacular glaciers, such as Perito Moreno , and head north, past the shores of the impossibly blue Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma. Detour alongside the second lake towards the Fitz Roy mountain range above the tiny trekking capital of El Chaltén before resuming your journey north. Places to stay are few and far between as you pass through small and dreary service towns – Gobernador Gregores, Bajo Caracoles, Perito Moreno (not to be confused with the glacier) and isolated estancias. Before reaching the last town, detour through a scenic valley to the Cueva de Las Manos – some of Argentina’s most spectacular cave art. A day’s drive beyond Perito Moreno, linger in the outdoorsy hub of Esquel and go hiking and kayaking, before finishing up in Bariloche (technically in the Lake District rather than Patagonia) with its picture-perfect setting on Lago Nahuel Huapi, surrounded by soaring mountain peaks.

Explore the region's Welsh culture on Ruta 25

Start: Esquel; end: Puerto Madryn; distance: 417 miles (671km); allow 3–4 days

This tour begins at unprepossessing little Esquel – a hub for hikers bound for the nearby Parque Nacional Los Alerces and kayakers seeking watery adventure on Río Percey and Laguna Terraplén – in the foothills of Argentina’s western Chubut province. It ends in Puerto Madryn , the jumping-off point for the Valdés Peninsula, renowned for its year-round marine life and seasonal whale watching. En route, you’ll stop at the small towns of Dolavon and Gaiman, the majority of whose residents claim Welsh ancestry dating back to the 1860s, when intrepid Welsh immigrants came to Argentina to protect Welsh culture and language that they considered to be under threat in their native Wales. Before you hit Route 25, it’s well worth detouring west from Esquel to Trevelin, another village with Welsh roots – 16 miles (26km) each way. All three villages have preserved the tradition of Welsh high tea, with tea houses offering cream tea with an assortment of cakes; Gaiman’s residents are particularly proud of Princess Diana’s tea-related visit in 1995. Welsh is still widely spoken (with Patagonian inflections) and has enjoyed a recent revival. Route 25 will take you across great swathes of pampas and through a particularly spectacular valley – Valle de los Altares – with red rock formations reminiscent of Utah or Arizona.

A woman looking out of the window of a campervan to admire the mountainous scenery

Wonder at the natural beauty and wildlife on the Valle Chacabuco drive

Start/end: Miradór Río Baker; distance: 91 miles (146km); allow 1–3 days

Near a scenic viewpoint overlooking Río Baker, some 11 miles (18km) north of the ranching town of Cochrane, the X-83 passes through Parque Nacional Patagonia and runs all the way to the border with Argentina. Part of the immense rewilding initiative by philanthropists Doug and Kris Tompkins, a formerly overgrazed sheep ranch, Estancia Chacabuco, was transformed into a national park of extraordinary natural beauty, once again populated by guanacos, flamingos, foxes, endangered huemul deer and the odd puma. You’ll want to take it slow, not just because it’s a narrow, bumpy gravel road with some blind corners, but also because you’ll want to absorb views of the scrubland covered hills, thickets of cypresses, the snow-peaked Jeinimeni mountain range in the distance, and the startling blue of meltwater lagoons and the Río Áviles. Wildlife sightings are common (watch out for flamingos by the roadside lagoons) and it’s worth spending at least a couple of days here, hiking the trails from the several trailheads that are some distance apart. If you have a sturdy vehicle, you can cross Paso Roballos into Argentina and connect to Ruta 40.

Follow the Valle de Río Palena to a bay full of marine life

Start: La Junta; end: Raúl Marin Balmaceda; distance: 47 miles (75km); allow 3–4 hours

Linking the little service town of La Junta, en route between Puyuhuapi and the Futaleufú Valley on the Carretera Austral, with white-sand beaches and a bay teeming with marine life, this narrow gravel road follows the perambulations of the twisting teal ribbon of Río Palena through stretches of open countryside and thickets of southern beech forest. Pull over at the rustic Termas del Sauce, 10 miles (17km) into the drive for a soak in the natural hot springs. Shortly before you find yourself driving one of the wide sandy streets of Raúl Marin Balmaceda – the Aysén region’s oldest village, founded in 1889 – you have to take a car ferry across the river. Until this new road was built, the village was among the most isolated in Chile. Local guides can take you dolphin- and sea bird-spotting by boat, or you can look for seals and cormorants while paddling a kayak. If you don’t want to retrace your steps, take advantage of one of the two weekly car ferries – one heading south to Puerto Chacabuco (for Coyhaique), and the other destined for Quellón, on the southern tip of the island of Chiloé .

A short red road bridge over turquoise glacial lakes

Lago General Carrera Route is a superb scenic side trip off the Carretera Austral

Start: Cruce el Maitén; end: Chile Chico; distance:  71 miles (115km); allow 3 hours

If you’re already driving the southern half of the Carretera Austral, this is a wonderfully scenic side trip from the fork in the road, and along the southern shore of the vast Lago General Carrera – an icy lake whose waters turn from sun-speckled turquoise to a deep sapphire, depending on the weather. Some 8 miles (13km) in, you breeze through Puerto Guadál – a sleepy village with unique accommodations nearby that make a good base for watery adventures – before the road becomes progressively narrower and more precipitous as it climbs steeply above the lake, winding its way around blind corners. Jaw-droppingly beautiful lake vistas open up around every blind corner, but be careful: there are no guardrails and in places, the road is too narrow for two vehicles to pass each other. It’s worth lingering a few days in Chile Chico, an agricultural town with a sunny microclimate; from November to January, gorge yourself on local cherries. From here, you can explore the ancient rock art and arid landscapes of Reserva Nacional Lago Jeinimeni, or press on across the border to Argentina and its iconic Ruta 40. Alternatively – for a shortcut back to the Carretera Austral, take the car ferry across the lake to Puerto Ibañez.

The End of the World is a wonderful one-day drive

Start: Punta Arenas; end: Ushuaia; distance: 388 miles (624km); allow 10–12 hours

This spectacular drive, done in a single day, takes in the navy-blue, wind-whipped Magellan Strait and the equally windswept wide open spaces of Chilean Patagonia before crossing the strait and traversing the vast island of Tierra del Fuego and finally arriving at Argentina’s southernmost city at the end of the world. The first part of the route skirts the strait, leaving behind the graceful stone mansions of Chile’s historic port of Punta Arenas. You enter a scrubland-covered landscape, dotted with occasional estancias before crossing the narrowest part of the strait by regular car ferry (watch out for black-and-white Peale’s dolphins!) to Tierra del Fuego (named after the smoke from the campfires of its indigenous inhabitants). A partially-paved gravel road takes you across an austere landscape of bare hills and yet more scrubland before breezing through the tiny mining town of Cerro Sombrero and eventually crossing the border to the Argentinean half of the island. You get expansive views of the Atlantic before passing through the towns of Rio Grande and Tolhuín before skirting the long narrow glacial lake – Lago Fagnano. On the final approach to Ushuaia , the landscape becomes far more dramatic and mountainous, and you’re finally greeted with the sight of Ushuaia, set against the backdrop of the snow-tipped peaks of the Cordillera Darwin, its steep streets resembling an amphitheater above the deep blue of the Beagle Channel. From here, there’s nowhere to go but back – unless you’re taking a cruise to Antarctica .

Drive the winding Valle Exploradores to an ice field

Start/end: Puerto Río Tranquilo; distance: 107 miles (172km); allow 4–6 hours

Another great side trip from the southern half of the Carretera Austral, this relatively new road has made Laguna San Rafael much more accessible. Until it was built a few years back, the only way to access the aquamarine lagoon, filled with house-sized chunks of ice, and to sail past the face of the ever-shrinking, 30,000-year-old San Valentín glacier, was by pricey catamaran trip from Puerto Chacabuco, near Coyhaique. This narrow, winding, gravel road takes you through the aptly-named Valley of Explorers all the way up to a boat landing, where you complete the rest of the journey to the glacier by inflatable Zodiac boat with the help of Puerto Río Tranquilo operators. But even if you don’t visit the San Valentín glacier, the drive itself is spectacular: it follows the bends of Río Exploradores through temperate rainforest of southern beech, thickets of ferns and nalca (giant wild rhubarb), passing waterfalls and ice melt lakes. It’s well worth stopping at Km 52 and paying a small entry fee to climb up to the Miradór Glaciar Exploradores for all-encompassing views of the northernmost ice tongue protruding from the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. To get up close to the glacier with crampons and an ice pick, make arrangements with El Puesto Expediciones .

The 11 Best Road Trips in the World

There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road on an epic adventure, especially on these incredible stretches of highway

The road from Cape Town, South Africa, east to the Garden Route is a beautiful shore-lined adventure.

I love a good road trip, especially in the mountains of Colorado, where I live. It’s when I do some of the best creative thinking, and it feels like the possibilities for exploration are endless. Should I hike a fourteener tomorrow? Cross the border into Utah to go mountain biking?

I scoured the globe to put together this list of the most stunning drives you could imagine, from the snowcapped peaks of Chilean Patagonia to the windswept west coast of Ireland. I’ve completed a handful, driven parts of many of them, and the rest are on my bucket list. I also chose these road trips for their proximity to adventure, and include essential details like the best hikes, beaches, and accommodations along the way. Buckle up.

The Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean, Canada

A herd of caribou make their way across a snow-covered Dempster Highway in Yukon, Canada.

Miles: 550 Road terrain: Mostly gravel Best time to go: The Dempster Highway is open year-round, but traditional summer festivals in the Arctic towns and the aurora borealis viewing in winter are seasonal highlights.

Truly rugged and remote, this overland expedition traverses dramatic tundra landscapes, boreal forests, and mountain ranges en route to the Arctic Sea. Begin in the gold-rush outpost of Dawson City, Yukon, and load up on supplies—the unpaved gravel road is a known tire eater, so be sure you have a spare and a four-wheel drive car. From there the Dempster Highway heads north through the historic Klondike region, crosses the Arctic Circle, and enters the Northwest Territories, where you’ll have panoramas of what’s known as the polar Serengeti, a wide-open wilderness teeming with caribou, moose, and grizzlies.

Dempster Highway Canada

Along the way, you’ll pass through Indigenous communities such as Tsiigehtchic, reached by ferry in summer after the snow melts. If you’re traveling during August, you can watch canoe races and listen to traditional music during Tsiigehtchic’s Canoe Days celebration. By the time you arrive in Inuvik, Canada’s largest community north of the Arctic Circle, you’ll have logged 457 miles. Pitch your tent or park your teardrop at Happy Valley Territorial Park (from $28), perched on a bluff overlooking the Richardson Mountains and the nation’s largest river, the Mackenzie.

Pick up the final stretch of the trip in town, the Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway, an 86-mile gravel road that winds past the Pingo Canadian Landmark, a collection of pingo (mounds of earth-covered ice) more than 100 feet high, and ends in the Inuit shorefront hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk.

Scenic Byway 12, Utah

Highway 12 Utah

Miles: 122 Road terrain: Paved Best time to go: Early spring and early fall

This expanse of highway connects Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef National Parks , traveling through Dixie National Forest and the northern part of Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. The whole thing could be completed in three hours, but given its proximity to so many perfect playgrounds for hiking, paddling, biking, and fishing, I suggest a four-day road trip. Bookended by Panguitch to the west and Torrey to the east, this designated All-American Road bisects multiple ecosystems,  from sage flats to slickrock deserts, and sleepy rural communities like Boulder, where you should stop for a meal at Hell’s Backbone Grill . The photo opps are endless, but Powell Point Vista, between the towns of Henrieville and Escalante, affords some of the best views of the area’s distinct Wasatch Limestone formations. If I could overnight in one place along the way it’d be Ofland Escalante , which has a drive-in theater, a pool, and a food truck (from $99).

Scenic Byway 12, Utah map

The Romantic Road, Germany

Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle backed by the foothills of the Alps and, right, another castle, Hohenschwangau

Miles: 220 Road terrain: Paved Best time to go: Spring or fall

Germany’s Romantische Strasse, or Romantic Road, could be the backdrop of a Grimm’s fairy tale, with its turreted and crenelated castles, red-roofed villages, and lake-dotted countryside in the Alpine foothills. This scenic byway across Bavaria connects the baroque town of Würzburg with the pastel-hued town of Füssen. The former is home to the Unesco-designated Würzburg Residence, one of the nation’s most opulent palaces, while Füssen is five minutes from what many consider the route’s highlight, King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle , which was the inspiration for the palace in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty . If you want to stretch your legs, you can tackle the hike to Mount Tegel, located behind the castle, or take the cable car up and explore the trail network at the top.

Along the way you’ll pass plenty of beer gardens—the riverfront Lechgarten in the hamlet of Landsberg am Lech is a must-stop—the vineyards of the Franconia wine region (pick up a bottle of dry, white Silvaner), and spend a few hours rejuvenating in the historic spa town of Bad Mergentheim; at the Best Western Premier Parkhotel ($150), you can take advantage of the indoor pool, spa, and gardens.

The Explorers Way, Australia

The road runs red across the Red Centre of Australia, with an unforgiving vastness. A kangaroo sign warns oncoming drivers.

Miles: 1,864 Road terrain: Paved (and remember, Aussies drive on the left-hand side) Best time to go: Australia’s fall, March through May The ultimate outback odyssey, the Explorers Way is a road trip through Australia’s Red Centre. Much of the drive follows the Stuart Highway, named after 19th-century explorer John McDouall Stuart, the first European to successfully traverse the continent from south to north. Stuart’s expedition took nearly a year, but two weeks is ample time to complete the journey from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory.

I highly recommend detours to Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park to stand in awe of the 2,831-foot-high monolith sacred to Aboriginals and to Litchfield National Park, teeming with waterfalls and wildlife like dingo and wallaby. Dedicate at least a day to explore the Aboriginal art galleries of Alice Springs, the Northern Territory’s second largest city and the approximate midway point of the route. When you reach the Top End, toast your trip with a bush negroni at Willing Distillery in Darwin or celebrate with a bush safari at Bamurru Plains Eco Lodge (from $2,425, all-inclusive), just northwest of Kakadu National Park, home to more than two dozen walking trails .

Atlantic Road, Norway

A wave crashes up against the Atlantic Road on Norway's west coast.

Miles: 22 Road terrain: Narrow, paved Best time to go: The coast is most dramatic in September and October

Norway has 18 designated national scenic routes, but the fact that the Atlantic Road was selected as the stage for the James Bond film No Time to Die is a testament to its wow-factor beauty. Officially known as Atlanterhavsvegen , this drive links the village of Kårvåg on Averøy Island with the fishing village of Bud on the mainland via an archipelago connected by eight low-lying bridges. Few roads bring you so close to the ocean: roll down your window and you’ll likely be kissed by sea mist.

Essential detours include the coastal path at Vevang to see Jan Freuchen’s “ Columna Transatlantica ,” a sculpture scattered across the rocks and heath-covered hills, and the glass-walled viewing platform at Askevågen, which affords spectacular mountain and ocean vistas. Strømsholmen Seasport, located between the towns of Kristiansun and Molde, offers scuba diving, fishing excursions, and wildlife safaris on the water. It also has four waterfront cabins that sleep up to ten people (from $55).

The Ring Road, Iceland

The Ring Road approaching a massive glacier in Iceland

Miles: 820 Road terrain: Mostly paved, with some stretches of gravel Best time to go: Late spring or early fall

Stretch after stretch of otherworldly landscapes unfold along this famed 820-mile loop , also known as Route 1. It shows off vast lava fields, tumbling waterfalls, spouting glaciers, and bubbling geysers. You’ll want at least seven days to enjoy all the attractions and adventures along the way, and if you do the drive in May, June, or July, you can take advantage of nearly 24 hours of sun.

Most road-trippers start in the capital, Reykjavík, the city closest to Keflavík International Airport. You can tackle it counterclockwise or clockwise, but if you do the latter first, the scenery crescendos from pretty to jaw-droppingly gorgeous. If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss, it’s a detour to the northern Troll Peninsula, which loops around the headlands past the end of the Skagafjörður fjord.

On the southeastern coast of Iceland , take time to explore Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon studded with icebergs, and nearby Diamond Beach, named for the brilliant chunks of ice that sparkle like gems against its black sands. The geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, just 20 minutes from the airport, are the perfect final stop. Or tack on an adventure—maybe kayak in a glacial lagoon or ride an ATV along the beach—with outfitter Icelandic Mountain Guides .

Norway's Atlantic Road from Kårvåg to Bud map

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

Green grass and a winding Cliff Path mark Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher.

Miles: 1,600 Road terrain: Narrow, winding, and paved (you’ll also driving on the left-hand side here) Best time to go: summer to take advantage of longer day-light hours

One of the longest coastal routes in the world, the Wild Atlantic Way hugs the Emerald Isle’s rugged and spectacular west coast for miles, from its northern terminus on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal to its southern terminus in the town of Kinsale in County Cork. The route is broken into 14 stages, and you’ll want to budget a minimum of five days to complete it.

There are loads of opportunities to stretch your legs on untouched swaths of beach near soaring sea cliffs. Those at Slieve League jut up 1,972 feet at their highest point; follow the Pilgrim’s Path from Teelin village 1.5 miles to the tops, and after pop into town for lunch. You’ll have plenty of options, but I highly recommend the award-winning Rusty Mackerel pub (rooms are also available from $54). The iconic Cliffs of Moher, in the lunar-like Burren region, are one of the natural treasures of Ireland, with a five-mile (one-way) coastal walk that connects the charming villages of Liscannor and Doolin.

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland map

On Achill Island, explore Keel Beach, a nearly two-mile stretch of golden sand. When I visited, the waves were pumping and I rented a board and a thick wetsuit from Soundwave Surf School . If the water’s calm, you can rent a stand-up-paddleboard. If your final destination is County Cork, celebrate with a pint at Levis Corner House , a pub in Ballydehob that’s been run by the same family for a century.

Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, Oregon

The sun shines over the Pacific on the coast of Ecola State Park, Oregon.

Miles: 363 Road terrain: Paved Best time to go: Late spring, early fall, or winter

Most people associate the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, with California, but the storied road spans from Canada to Mexico. Some of the best lengths, in my opinion, are in Oregon, where the road skirts virgin beaches, craggy mountains, and rocky coves, through a series of quirky seaside resorts and sleepy fishing villages. You could zip along all of it in 10 to 12 hours, but five days is the better plan, stopping at the many parks and public lands along the route. Ecola State Park (sea stacks, tidepooling, wildlife-watching) and Oregon Dunes Recreation Area (whose sweeping sandy expanses are said to have been the inspiration for Dune’ s planet Arrakis) are both top of my list.

About 30 miles northwest of the city of Bandon is Cape Arago; this short detour off the byway takes you through the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve, home to more than 150 kinds of birds and many good hiking trails . In the town of Coos Bay, I like to overnight at the modern cabins at Bay Point Landing ($235). The next day, you can drive 24 miles east to the remote Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area and hike 1.4 miles to the top of Golden Falls for an eagle’s-eye view of the cascading waterfall and old-growth firs. Schedule your journey for spring and winter and bring your binocs—you can often spot the blows from migrating gray whales as they surface off the coast.

The Garden Route, South Africa

An aerial view of the South Africa’s Western Cape that takes in the Indian Ocean, Garden Route, and Outeniqua Mountains.

Miles: 124 Road terrain: Paved Best time to go: June to December, when you can spot whales from shore

This ocean-hugging highway showcases the Western Cape’s outrageously beautiful beaches, lush forests, national forests, and abundant marine life. Just under two hours’ drive from Cape Town, the former fishing village of Hermanus Bay is the gateway for the Garden Route. I always stop here to take advantage of the excellent land-based whale-watching between June and December. Continue three and a half hours east on the N2 highway to the harbor town of Mossel Bay, the route’s official starting point. Spend some time trekking around before heading out on your drive; my favorite is the 2.5-mile out-and-back trail from Pinnacle Point to Oyster Bay.

Wilderness National Park , approximately midroute, is a great spot for birdwatching and kayaking and has accommodations that include campsites (from $20), cabins (from $50), and a bed-and-breakfast (from $90). A half-hour farther east is Plettenberg Bay, nicknamed the Saint Tropez of South Africa for its palatial beach homes. Just south is Robberg Nature Reserve , a nice picnic spot where you can observe seal colonies. Spend a day exploring Tsitsikamma National Park , which boasts a 50-mile-long shoreline and an interior with 500-year-old trees. Looking to burn off some energy after hours in the car? I suggest the Otter Trail. South Africa’s oldest hiking trail takes five days to complete and begins near the Garden Route’s eastern terminus at Storms River rest camp.

The Garden Route, South Africa map

Queenstown to Milford Sound, New Zealand

A van is parked in front of Milford Sound, New Zealand, and is passengers gaze over the waters and iconic Metre Peak.

Miles: 180 Road terrain: Paved, two-lane highway Best time to go: New Zealand’s fall, March through May, is perfect for hiking Described by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world,” Milford Sound is big nature on steroids. The drive on the South Island from Queenstown along State Highway 6 (a.k.a. the Southern Scenic Highway) and then State Highway 94 (Milford Sound Highway) will get you there  in just over four hours, but slow down to marvel at the waterfalls and alpine lakes framed by mountains. Te Anau is the halfway point of the drive and an ideal place to overnight, refuel, and stock up on food as there are no services farther en route to the sound. The lakeside town is also the gateway to the glacier-carved wilderness of Fiordland National Park and the jumping-off point for the Milford Track, arguably one of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walks , so consider tacking on a few extra days.

The Carretera Austral, Chile

A wide, rock-filled river descends from snowcapped peaks in Chile's Aysén region.

Miles: 770 Road terrain: Rugged, pock-marked dirt, requiring four-wheel drive Best time to go: Austral spring and summer, November to March

Waterfalls tumbling from hanging glaciers. Forests of lengua trees and turquoise lagoons. Ancient marble caves and flamingo-filled lakes. The wild backdrop of Chile’s Southern Highway (Route 7) is an adventurer’s fantasy. Also known as the Carretera Austral , this road cuts through remote, mountainous wilderness in northern Patagonia. Set aside at least two weeks so you can take time to visit Queulat National Park and Pumalín National Park , both located along the route.

Puerto Montt, a bustling town in the Chilean Lake District, is your starting point. It’s considered Chile’s seafood capital, so attempt to score a table at Pa Mar Adentro Restaurant and try the caldo curanto , a traditional seafood stew, before starting your journey south.

The Carretera Austral, Chile map

Coyhaique, the capital of Chile’s Aysén region, marks the route’s midway point. Take a day here to trek the trails of Reserva Nacional Coyhaique, home to two beautiful lakes, Los Sapos and Venus. Campsites are available in the Casa Bruja section of the reserve ($5), or continue an hour south to the town of Aysén and hole up at the family-run Mallin Colorado Ecolodge ($170), perched above the turquoise waters of General Carrera Lake. The owners serve terrific farm-to-table meals and partner with local guides who lead kayak trips to the Marble Caves and treks across Exploradores Glacier.

The charming wooden exterior and forest surrounds of the Mallin Colorado Ecolodge in the Aysén region of Chile

Rumbo Sur Hotel ($190), in the isolated terminus town of Villa O’Higgins, is a comfy final base surrounded by hiking trails and glaciers. A 4×4 is recommended, as most of the road is unpaved.

Outside travel columnist Jen Murphy hates driving but will happily sit shotgun on any road trip. Last fall she navigated on a weeklong mother-daughter road trip through southwest Colorado.

How We Test Travel & Adventure Backpacks

travel bags

Our tester journeyed far and wide on numerous trips by plane, train and automobile with these backpacks, loading them up with apparel, gadgets and gear to see how they handle the stress. They were loaded and unloaded into luggage racks, trunks and back seats alike, carried on long walks to and from terminals and destinations, and left to bash about in the closet between trips.

For many of the tests, he loaded it up with a typical array of clothing and equipment one would need for a business or personal trip of several days time: an extra pair of jeans or slacks, 2–3 T-shirts, 1–2 overshirts or button-downs, a pair of sneakers, gym shorts and shirts, a DSLR camera , iPhone charger and Apple Watch charger and of course, several changes of undergarments.

Peak Design’s travel backpack has been a top pick of ours for a while now , and suffice it to say, it’s still impressive. You can tell it’s a premium product from the first moment you lay hands and eyes on it; it looks and feels nice, from the action of the zippers to the smooth, almost waxy waterproof exterior to the soft, gentle gray fabric of the interior. But look closer, and you’ll find more features you might have missed the first time; hidden magnets seamlessly tuck away the backpack straps when not in use. (Just be sure you check the straps’ length every time you pull them back out, as they can slide out longer a little more easily than some bags.)

Of course, none of that would matter if it weren’t capable of carrying a bunch of gear. Luckily, this bag excels at that. Two main pockets easily enable the carriage of several days’ worth of apparel, while smaller slots for everything from toiletries to cables to headphones to laptops are found inside. There are grab handles for one-handed toting, multiple zippers for easy entry from several angles, and slots for water bottles on the sides, of course. We also love that unlike most other options on this list, this bag can contract down to a smaller-sized bag 35 L capacity for shorter trips or bulk up to a 45 L if you need to bring more along (or wound up acquiring a few items while out on the road.) All in all, it’s probably as close to the perfect travel backpack as you might find on sale today.

Best Rollaboard Replacement Travel Backpack

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

  • Designed to maximize allowable carry-on space
  • Opens and packs like a carry-on suitcase
  • Featured padded hip belt with side pocket for better weight distribution
  • Accessing items in main compartment can be awkward on the go
  • Lacks luggage pass-through sleeve
  • Slightly heavier than other options
  • $350 at Tortuga

Tortuga’s Travel Backpack Pro is regarded as one of the best travel backpacks for good reason. Its rectangular shape lets the bag maximize its available storage capacity while ensuring its dimensions fall within standard airline carry-on guidelines. The primary storage compartment also opens as a suitcase to reveal a large mesh zipper compartment side and a spacious main compartment. Depending on your use case, this design detail can be a pro or con. On the one hand, it’s great to lay the bag flat on a bed and unzip the clam shell zipper to reveal and grab whatever’s inside quickly. However, quickly grabbing something buried deep inside the main compartment can be difficult if you don’t have enough space to lay the bag fully flat. The bag’s space-maximizing design also means its physically and aesthetically a bit more boxy than other options we recommend. Tortuga sells a smaller 30L capacity version of the same bag if 40L feels too big for your needs.

Best Bargain Travel Backpack

Aer Travel Pack 3

  • Features handles on all sides
  • Tons of pockets, including a hidden one for Airtags / Tracker
  • Includes luggage handle pass-through strap
  • $249 at Aer

Aer’s Travel Pack 3 is a little more affordable than the Peak Design entry, but don’t hold that against it; this bag is a lot like the above model. There are an abundance of pockets; you won’t have any trouble finding a place for everything and putting everything in its place. And while it doesn’t look or feel quite as premium when standing next to the Peak Design bag, it still has the quality and appearance of a high-end product.

travel bags

On the downside, the orientation of the main pouch can make opening it and filling the bag a bit trickier than some other entries on the list, and the magnetic clips for the chest strap and cinch straps feel like an unnecessary complication. It’s also a little smaller than other recommendations on this list. Still, overall, it’s a great choice for a few days on the road.

Best Multi-Use Travel Backpack

best patagonia adventure trips

Yeti Crossroads Backpack 35L

  • Made from thick, abrasion resistant nylon
  • Stable luggage pass through sleeve
  • Removable external straps for lashing on other gear
  • Sold in multiple smaller sizes
  • Laptop sleeve is a little smaller compared to other bags
  • Less water resistance than other options
  • Lack of DWR coating also means its more prone to staining
  • $250 at Yeti

Yeti’s approach to backpacks is the same as its coolers . The brand’s Crossroads Backpack is a durably constructed and capable bag with a slightly less techy aesthetic than other recommendations on this list. It also includes a unique feature mix that makes it great for airports, city travel, and outdoor adventures.

For work-related trips or voyages within city limits, it’s got padded organization pockets for various items, including a laptop, and opens clamshell-style for easier packing. In cases of outdoor adventuring, it also features a pair of removal external straps for toting along other items like a rain shell, ground cover, or a lightweight camp chair. There’s also a pocket big enough to fit a 26 oz water bottle, although it’s located inside the bag, which might be a controversial decision for some. We lack the fact that Yeti sells smaller 22 L and 27 L versions of the bag for those interesting in something that’s closer in size to a more traditional backpack.

The Travel Backpack with the Smartest Feature Set

Matador GlobeRider 45L Travel Backpack

  • Features a highly adjustable outdoor backpack style harness for optimizing carrying comfort and weight distribution
  • Stowable main backpack straps can tuck away for checking
  • Dedicated internal compartment that's great for keeping dirty / worn shoes from the rest of the bag's contents
  • Looks more technical / camping oriented than other options
  • Bigger compared to other tweener-sized options
  • $350 at Matador
  • $350 at Huckberry
  • $350 at REI
  • $350 at Backcountry

Smart design details distinguish all of Matador’s products, and their premium  GlobeRider 45 travel and adventure backpack  puts this part of the brand’s DNA on full display. While the sheer variety of features makes this bag stand out, its outdoor-grade harness, complete with adjustable load lifters, a contoured aluminum framestay, and a backpacking carry harness, make it one of the best travel backpack options for anyone who expects to walk long distances carrying it. The harness is also stowable behind the padded back panel, which can help prevent the bag from being caught up in machinery if you decide to check it.

We also love the larger, built-in internal organization pocket that’s sizeable enough to keep a pair of dirty hiking boots separated from other packed items and the internal shockcord securement system on the other side for keeping contents in place when the bag is open. There’s even a “smugglers pocket” tucked away behind the back panel for keeping critical items like a Passport out of harm’s way.

Most Distinctive Travel Backpack

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack

  • Available in more colorful outdoorsy-styled versions, including a randomized Del Dia option
  • Includes removable raincover
  • Includes strap for carrying crossbody
  • Designed to work perfectly with Cotopaxi packing cubes and accessories
  • Includes a lifetime warranty + repairs
  • Less open space for cramming gear inside
  • $220 at Cotopaxi
  • $220 at Amazon
  • $220 at REI

We gravitate to more unremarkable colors in bags. Still, if you prefer your equipment to stand out or like owning something unique,  Cotopaxi’s Allpa 42 L is an excellent option . It’s available in various standard colors, most of which mix and match various bright shades to give off a classic outdoorsy vibe. But there’s also the option of buying a one-of-a-kind  “Del Dia” version  made from leftover parts and pieces from other companies’ production runs. While you can pick the primary color you are interested in, the different colored elements of the bag are determined on the production line based on available materials. The result is an aesthetically unique bag that’s also more sustainably produced.

But don’t assume the appeal of this bag is all aesthetic. It also offers plenty of practical travel-centric details, including various internal zippered organization pockets, a removal rainfly for foul weather protection, and a removable waist belt. Its primary harness straps can also be tucked away for easier checking.

If you want to enter the Cotopaxi travel ecosystem fully, the bag is also specifically designed to fit the company’s packing cubes and fanny pack.

Best Made in the USA Travel Backpack

GoRuck GR3 45L USA

  • Ridiculously sturdy and tough
  • Simple design
  • Harder to access laptop and other pockets on the go
  • Expensive compared to bags with bells & whistles
  • $455 at goruck.com

GoRuck is known for building bags that are sturdy as hell, and meant to go through it, too. The canvas skin feels thick enough to resist tiger claws. That’s not to say it’s harsh on the wearer; 201D Cordura straps and back panels feel plenty soft even over the long haul. We tested the smaller GR1, but even that 26-liter bag punched above its weight, proving large enough to carry our usual kit without much trouble; the 45-liter GR3 will no doubt prove capable of taking whatever you throw at it, inside or out.

travel bags

With only one main compartment and a couple rather small pockets, it’s a bit harder to stash smaller items in their own areas — you may have to rummage through your underwear to grab your laptop — but if your priority is making sure everything in your bag stays safe and sound no matter what, GoRuck has you covered. Be aware that this bag is often sold out.

Most Versatile Travel Backpack

a black and grey backpack

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Pack

  • A built-in secondary pack is great for day trips
  • Massive capacity
  • More affordable than other options
  • Re-assembly of constituent bags can be tricky when full
  • Forces you to split your gear up between two bags when packing
  • $220.00 at osprey.com
  • $176 at Backcountry Gear $220 (20% off)
  • $215 at Amazon
  • $220 at L.L. Bean

Nerd alert: What does the Osprey Farpoint 55 have in common with the USS Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation? (Which, coincidentally, first aired with a pilot called “Encounter at Farpoint.”) Well, both starship and backpack can separate into two separate vessels if the need arises. In the case of the Osprey, that means the smaller, secondary pocket detaches to become its own daypack, perfectly sized for short hikes and office visits. Combined, the complete bag is a mammoth beast, capable of taking on a stunning amount of gear; if you tend to pick up souvenirs on your trips, this bag is for you.

travel bags

On the less-appealing side, it’s a bit difficult to get into the main bag when “assembled,” and that assembly process can be tricky when both bags are stuffed. Combined, the overall package is bulky; it’s not an issue when wearing it (or at least it wasn’t for our six-foot-four-inch tester), but it does generally necessitate splitting the bag into its constituent parts on the airplane, stowing the big part in the overhead and the small one under the seat ahead.

Best Travel Backpack for Awkward-Sized Gear

a black backpack with a white background

Patagonia Cragsmith Pack 45L

  • Giant pocket and wide opening make for easy packing
  • Light compared to other bags
  • Not as optimal for business travel as some other bags
  • No true dedicated sleeve for laptops or tablets
  • $152.99 at Patagonia $219.00 (30% off)

Of course, any list of high-quality backpacks wouldn’t be complete without a Patagonia entry. The Cragsmith may be made for rock climbing, but it’s also a good fit for travel, with ample capacity in a giant central compartment as well as secondary slots for other gear. That said, the lack of a second main compartment may be a turn-off for some, and the relaxed sleeve on the inside of the main cargo bay is better suited for rope than a laptop. But if you want a sleek travel backpack from one of the best names in outdoor equipment, the Cragsmith should treat you right.

Key details to consider before deciding on the right travel or adventure backpack for your needs.

  • Do you plan on using your travel or adventure backpack frequently in conjunction with a rollaboard? If yes, we recommend keying in on options that feature a luggage pass-through sleeve. This will allow you to take the bag off your back and more easily roll it with your suitcase during extended treks in the airport.
  • Do you plan on using your travel backpack off the beaten path or expect to be exposed to the elements for longer stretches? If yes, look for options made with DWR coatings or sold with an included rainfly as well as sealed zippers for added water protection.
  • Do you plan on walking/hiking long distances while wearing the travel backpack? If yes, we recommend focusing on backpacks that offer integrated waist straps or, even better, more adjustable/tunable harnesses. Both features will allow you to distribute the weight of the bag better and for more comfort.
  • Do you plan on ever checking your travel backpack on an airplane? While less critical than the other considerations, bags with stowable straps and harnesses are better suited for checking. It’s an unlikely risk, but extraneous straps can get caught in conveyor belt machinery while being scanned.
  • Do you prefer packing with packing cubes and smaller bags? If so, then we recommend looking at backpacks with less built-in organization pockets to maximize what you can carry. If you’re in the opposite camp, then many of the options that include a variety of pockets and zippered compartments can help you quickly find whatever you’ve packed.

An easy rubric for gauging the right sized carry-on adventure backpack for your needs.

If you are hoping to use a single backpack for a trip lasting more than three days, we recommend focusing on bags with a capacity of 40 L unless you are an extremely light packer.

Best Travel Duffel Bags 2024

Here are some of the top travel duffel bags you can buy today, including this Patagonia Black Hole style. REI

  • Dawn Magyar | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

If you have a getaway planned for the summer, you’ll need a durable bag to stand up to all the adventures you have planned during your trip.

A travel duffel bag is the perfect companion for those summer vacations as it allows you to pack what you need with ample roominess and easy portability. These bags also offer compartments to keep your personal belongings organized with adjustable straps to sling over the shoulder or carry as a backpack.

But with so many different duffel bag styles to choose from, it can be a challenge to decide which one to buy.

To help, here are some of the most recommended travel duffel bags available, including styles from Patagonia and Beis .

  • Patagonia Black Hole Duffel: “This bag is the most versatile gear duffle we’ve found. It’s tough, water-resistant, and great for toting clothes and equipment in almost any travel or outdoor scenario,” Wirecutter says.
  • Beis Commuter Duffel: “The bag is bursting with compartments and pockets for organizing small, medium, and large items so you can pack efficiently before a weekend getaway. After we packed the bag full of clothing, shoes, and a toiletry bag, it was fairly heavy, but the shoulder and tote straps were shockingly comfortable and helped balance out the weight,” Travel + Leisure says.
  • REI Co-op Roadtripper: “The REI Roadtripper offers excellent storage and utility at over half the price of other bags, making it an exceptional value for a duffel bag on a budget,” GearLab says.
  • Away The Everywhere Bag: “It’s made of nylon with leather details on the handles and straps and it features two large outer pockets. Inside, it’s just as well-organized, with a 15-inch laptop sleeve and a host of zippered and slip pockets to hold everything from a paperback to your mobile phone,” Popular Mechanics says.
  • Osprey Transporter Duffel Bag: “After testing a series of duffels, the Osprey Transporter 40L stands out as the go-to hauler for a long weekend. It features a zippered end pocket about the exterior for smaller items like keys or headphones, and a large, easy-to-access main body with a lockable U-zipper carries everything from shirts and shorts to technical equipment,” Forbes says.

I Traveled the Globe in This Comfy Jumpsuit, and Now I’m Hooked — Here Are 16 More I’m Eyeing From $18

These finds from Patagonia, REI, Vuori, Spanx, and more are seriously versatile.

Travel + Leisure

As a travel writer, I am always looking for comfortable and functional clothes that are multipurpose and perform well during my trips. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to give jumpsuits a try, and now I can’t seem to get enough of them. My Duer Performance Denim Jumpsuit has traveled all over the globe with me and is now a staple in my carry-on luggage.

During a recent week-long trip to Ireland, I wore them during the day while exploring all the sights in Dublin and dressed them up at night with a long-sleeve T-shirt when the temperature dipped. I love that it’s made of a stretch performance fabric that helps with breathability and ease of movement. Plus, the zip closure makes it easy to get in and out of while the waistline sits above the hips for a very flattering look. It is perfect for busy days on the move, both at home and in far-flung locations.

Duer Performance Denim Jumpsuit

I’ve concluded that a jumpsuit really is an effortless staple of any travel wardrobe — one that is versatile and never really goes out of style. From travel days to casual day trips to even just lazy lounging on a hammock, they add a bit of flare and style to your appearance in an easy, breezy way — which is why I’m now on the hunt for more.

Fortunately in my search, I found 16 perfect styles out there made for performance and comfort from top brands like Patagonia , REI , Vuori , Spanx , and more — so I just might add a few more to my own cart for upcoming summer trips.

Anrabess Women's Summer Loose Jumpsuit

The epitome of casual comfort, these loose-fitting, sleeveless, wide-leg jumpsuits are exactly what you need whether you are spending a whole day exploring a city or heading out for a casual night on the town. The spaghetti straps are completely adjustable, and it even has pockets. You can easily pair this with a T-shirt underneath or a denim jacket over for a dressier look. It comes in 26 different colors and patterns and is up to 40 percent off, so stock up for your live-in summer look this year.

Spanx AirEssentials Jumpsuit

The jumpsuit version of Oprah’s favorite matching set has taken the Internet by storm (on TikTok alone, there are pages of glowing reviews ), and for good reason. It’s buttery soft and ultra flattering, which is exactly what you want for long travel days. It’s got a price tag to match its quality, but if you are looking to spend a fraction of the price, consider this similar look at Amazon that’s only $37.

Athleta Brooklyn Utility Jumpsuit

Backcountry

For a sportier look, I’ve flagged this breathable option from Athleta that’s built for performance with its lightweight stretchy fabric and cargo pockets to hold the essentials. It’s wrinkle-resistant, UPF 40+ for sun protection, abrasion-resistant, and machine-washable. Plus, you can cinch the ankle to switch up the look based on the shoes you’re wearing — seriously, what more could you ask for in a travel jumpsuit?

Vuori Lux Jogger Jumpsuit

If you love traveling in your activewear, then you will love this flattering and stylish jumpsuit from Vuori. It is made of performance knit fabric, so it is very comfortable, especially during the warmer months. It is also wrinkle-free, so that means you can easily go from flight to exploring around town without having to change outfits (and save some space in your luggage). And, bonus: It has a built-in bra with removable cups so it can be adjusted depending on your body type and fit preference.

Stoic Venture Overall

Want an outfit that looks like overalls but has the flexibility and style of a jumpsuit? Then definitely check out the Stoic Venture Overalls. They are made from a stretch cotton blended fabric that adds mobility, breathability, and a flattering fit. The bib has multiple pockets to store things like a phone, sunnies, keys, and more. The hooks on the straps are adjustable and come off easily. These along with the side zipper make getting in and out of the overalls super easy and fast.

Free People High Roller Jumpsuit

Lazy summer days lounging in a hammock or strolling down downtown streets with an ice cream in hand call for this high roller jumpsuit by Free People . It is made of 100 percent cotton for breathability and has deep front patch pockets for all your knick knacks. The back straps are adjustable and can be worn over the shoulder or crisscrossed. It comes in four different denim colors and has a slouchy fit so make sure to size down if you like your jumpsuits more fitted.

Patagonia Fleetwith Romper

Patagonia’s quick-drying, wrinkle-free romper is a great choice for when you are looking for stylish but comfortable clothing. The draped waist has an encased drawcord, so it is easy to adjust and fits a wide range of body types. It has five different pockets as well as a hidden zipped one to keep valuables like an ID and money secure. And like all Patagonia products, this one is also fair trade certified, so you know that the people who made it earned a premium for their labor.

Amazon Essentials Women's Knit Surplice Jumpsuit

This relaxed fit, cotton and jersey blend long-sleeved jumpsuit is perfect for those of us who feel cold no matter the season. It is soft and breathable, and the tapered leg adds style to a casual look. It is also perfect for flights, especially long-haul ones where you want to be comfortable but not be bothered with too many layers. The faux-wrap V-neck is stylish and easy to dress up or down making it great for work, travel, or just lounging. It is also available in plus sizes up to 2X and six colors.

Backcountry Sleeveless Cotton Gauze Jumpsuit

The relaxed fit, V-neck, dreamy sleeveless cotton gauze jumpsuit from Backcountry is that all-in-one outfit you will be so glad you purchased. The cotton makes it an ideal choice for warm temperatures and the fit is comfortable for all-day wear. The elastic waist adds the right amount of snatch for a streamlined look. It comes in two neutral colors, fossil and castile green, and is currently up to 65 percent off.

Yesno Women's Summer Boho Casual Jumpsuits

Made from comfy 100 percent cotton, this floral jumpsuit is not only full of personality but also soft, breathable, and ideal for hot and humid weather. It has adjustable spaghetti straps, two front pockets, and side-split wide legs for a relaxed fit with a touch of bohemian style, complete with vibrant floral prints. With 19 different patterns and color choices, they are suitable for beach outings, lounging, parties, and travel.

Anrabess Women's Casual Loose Fit Overalls

If you like traditional-looking overalls, this cute denim one is perfect for summer without looking too much like a technical utility uniform. It has two bib pockets in front and plenty of back pockets to carry all your essentials like wallet, phone, and keys. The straps are adjustable, and the hem is cuffed for a more modern updated look. It is loose-fitting and gives off a vintage ’80s vibe. You can dress it up or down with your favorite T-shirt for outdoor adventures, travel, or even just daily wear. There are over 20 different colors to choose from, and it is currently 12 percent off.

Caracilia Women's Short Overalls Summer Romper

For when the weather really warms up, this cute linen overall style romper is the ideal easy breezy summer look for all kinds of activities — travel, lounging, daily wear, a cruise, or even a seaside holiday. It has an adjustable shoulder strap with buttons and a wide leg that is just as comfortable as it appears. 8 Sun Hats You Need This Summer

Because sun protection is hot.

While lathering on the lotion and seeking solace in the shade provide a commendable defense, a layer of added security can keep you from getting burned and decrease your risk of developing skin damage or skin cancer. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? That’s where sun hats come in. If there’s one type of cap that will shield you from a scorching blaze and give you that extra source of protection, this is it.

The best sun hats on the market have wide brims and are made of UPF-rated materials (all of the hats on this list fit the bill), which protect the face, neck, and ears from sun damage. Most options are also moisture-wicking and water-resistant to help you on those extra-spicy days. By wearing a sun hat, you’ll not only add extra drip to your look (we’re talking about style here, not sweat), but you’ll stay safe, too —and who doesn’t want that? So please, wear a fucking sun hat this summer and check out the ones our editors recommend.

If you’re looking for the top dog in sun protection, you’ve found it. The Horizon Breeze Brimmer is an airy, full-brimmed hat with sweat-wicking fabric and UPF 40+ protection. ( Woof. ) It has the bona fide seal of approval from the Skin Cancer Foundation, making it a safe and stylish pick.

Get ready to live out your best Indiana Jones fantasy in the Pistil Briggs. While it won’t protect you from snakes, it will save you from getting burned.

Blistering rays, windy ridges, and rough waters are no match for Patagonia’s Quandary Brimmer hat. Fashioned from water-repellent nylon, this cap shields you from even the harshest elements.

Whatever you’ve got planned for the day—hiking, biking, kayaking (the world is your oyster, baby)—this Lululemon sun hat will keep you covered.

If this hat doesn’t make you say, “ D amn, son ” when you look in the mirror, then it may be time for a new mirror. The Pipeline Lifeguard hat is made of handwoven Mexican palm straw and features a moisture-wicking padded sweatband for all-day comfort.

Hear that? It’s the call of the wild ( or it could be your next-door neighbors, but let’s hope it’s the wild ). Sunday Afternoons’ Ultra Adventure hat is stain-resistant and moisture-wicking, and it lets you bring your own shade wherever your adventures lead.

Tilley is known for crafting iconic heritage products that redefine outdoor life and style. Its Ltm6 Airflo sun hat has mesh ventilation; a durable, water-repellent finish; and UPF 50+ protection, making it the ideal outdoor option. In other words, Tilley works hard so you can rest easy.

Crush it, wear it, pack it—the Rogan sun hat is ready to accompany you on all of your summer adventures. It’s virtually indestructible (just don’t try to throw it off a cliff or something) and will protect you from even the harshest UV rays.

Why You Should Trust Us

shape, rectangle

We’re not going to say something is great unless it’s actually great.

Every product in Esquire’s round-ups is carefully curated by our fashion and e-commerce teams. When it comes to sun hats, you can rest assured that we’re hand-selecting styles that we’ve personally tested, tried, and loved, along with styles that the rest of our fashionable colleagues here at Esquire endorse for their own wear.

We’ve had to go through a lot of trial and error, and these sun hats are the ones that are simply the best. Every pick on this list (and our other lists!) comes from years of wearing different things, seeing what we love and what we don’t, and going from there. No two tastes are the same, and no two men are the same. Your proverbial mileage may vary. But if you’re looking for advice from folks who and care (possibly too much!) about this sort of stuff, this is the place to start.
