Dropping down the other side we’ll weave through the green valley, stopping for a picnic next to a stream with nearby wild horses and roaming yaks.

It’s the final day of riding on this Royal Enfield motorcycle tour and today is the big one: KhardungLa pass. The roads up to the top are incredible and when we reach the summit we’ll stop for the celebratory group photo with the sign! It’s high fives all round before we hop back on the Enfield’s and cruise the newly tarmacked, beautifully windy roads back down to where we started. Cold beer on the terrace? Why not.

FAQs Click to expand

Do i need a visa click to expand.

Yes, unless you are a national of Nepal, Bhutan or the Maldives. If you are from an eligible country, the easiest way to get one is to apply for an e-tourist visa online, but make sure you visit the official site… Here’s the link .

Assuming you live in an eligible country / territory you can apply online up until a minimum of 4 days in advance of the date of arrival with a window of 120 days. So for example, if you are applying on 1st Sept you can select arrival date from 5th Sept to 2nd Jan.

For peace of mind, we recommend you do this nicely in advance to avoid any delays or issues. The visa lasts 60 days so unless you decide to extend your trip for vastly more than the length of the tour, then this should be plenty. When you arrive at Delhi airport, there is an immigration form to fill in before you queue up to show your visa. Now we all know Brits love to queue but don’t wait to get to the front just to have the man send you to the back past everyone to fill in the form, it’s just embarrassing.

Follow this link for the most up to date entry requirements. This is a link to the UK foreign office website – if you are not a UK resident, please search for the equivalent info from your home country’s foreign office.

Visa costs, if applicable, are not included in the tour price.

How can I avoid altitude sickness? Click to expand

  • Stay well hydrated. Caffeine and alcohol impacts hydration, so it’s a good idea keep intake to a minimum until you are acclimatised.
  • Apparently a high potassium diet helps. Lots of bananas then…
  • Make a conscious effort to breathe properly as we climb to higher altitudes – you want to saturate your blood with oxygen. Your tour leader will explain this in more detail in your welcome briefing.
  • Diamox is an altitude sickness tablet – please do your own research on this – if you decide you would like to take these, we always carry a stock with us. You’ll want to start taking these in Delhi, before we start climbing.
  • Oxygen – we carry oxygen bottles with us on every trip. Our medic will keep an eye on everyone and monitor peoples stats. He will administer oxygen if necessary.
  • Ibuprofen if you start to feel a headache coming on.

How do I book? Click to expand

To secure your place we simply need a 20% non-refundable deposit (subject to a minimum of £500). The remainder does not need to be paid until 60 days prior to the tour start date.

How do I carry my main luggage? Click to expand

This Royal Enfield motorcycle tour will be followed by either one or two support vehicles depending on group size. This means that all your luggage goes in there rather than having it bounce around on the back your Royal Enfield for miles on end. You just need to take either a tank bag or small rucksack for your camera and any travel essentials.

Is Ride Expeditions insured? Click to expand

Yes. Here at Ride Expeditions, we take the necessary precautions to ensure that we protect both ourselves and you as the customer, with insurances covering financial failure, public liability, professional indemnity and employers liability (you will need your own travel insurance).

To obtain this insurance we must meet strict safety standards and local regulations. We must also carry out thorough risk assessments about all aspects of a tour before tyres can hit tarmac (…or dirt!).

Is it safe to drink the tap water? Click to expand

NO! Although the locals may be drinking tap water, doing the same has a strong possibility of playing havoc with your insides. It’s called Delhi Belly for a reason.

We recommend that you drink only bottled water and that you check the seal before drinking. If you choose canned drinks, give the lid a good wipe beforehand just to be sure. And when brushing your teeth, rinsing with bottled water is a good idea too.

Is my money safe? Click to expand

Yes. All passengers booking with Ride Expeditions Ltd are fully insured for the initial deposit, and subsequently the balance of monies paid as detailed in your booking confirmation form. The policy also includes repatriation if required, arising from the cancellation or curtailment of your travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Ride Expeditions Ltd. This insurance has been arranged by Towergate Travel through Evolution Insurance.

Is this trip suitable for those with limited mobility? Click to expand

Not riding the motorcycle, no (although this will of course depend on the extent of your limited mobility). However, we may be able to accommodate you in our support vehicle. We advise you to give us a call and we can discuss.

Is wi-fi available throughout the trip? Click to expand

In theory yes, although in practice, Wi-Fi coverage can be slow at best, slower on average and non-existent on many occasions. We advise you activate your ‘out-of-office’!

What are the health / immunisation considerations? Click to expand

For the most accurate and up to date info, we advise you visit the Indian page of the ‘Travel Health Pro’ website .

Please also consult with your own doctor at home at least 8 weeks before your trip.

What currency should I bring with me? Click to expand

This one is both simple and complicated. The local currency is Indian Rupees – INR. However, unless you are a resident of India, importing rupees is prohibited so you cannot actually obtain the notes outside the country itself like you can for other countries.

You can either bring in other currencies to exchange when in India, or simply withdraw rupees from ATMs as you would back at home. Well we say that, but if you are in a remote village with only three residents, a yak and an elderly donkey, there may not be an ATM, so don’t expect universal coverage throughout the trip!

If you do bring cash, US dollars are universally welcome. Bitcoin, coloured buttons and belly button fluff are not. Whatever you bring, try not to exchange too much at the arrival airport – the exchange rate is terrible! There are ATMs at the airport too.

What documents / licenses do I need? Click to expand

To be legally riding in India you are required to carry your local driving licence, which must cover the size of bike you will be riding. This will also be a stipulation of any travel insurance company too.

You will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of your driving licence.

What is the average group size? Click to expand

Average group sizes are 8-9 riders and we limit the groups to 14 riders.

What is the cancellation policy? Click to expand

If you cancel your booking before departure, cancellation charges will be applied as follows:

  • 61 days or more before tour start date – retention of deposit
  • 42-60 days before tour start date – retention of 50% of tour price
  • 28-41 days before tour start date – retention of 70% of tour price
  • 0-27 days before tour start date – retention of 100% tour price

Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for further info regarding cancellations, changes and transferring your trip to a friend.

What is the official travel advice? Click to expand

For the most accurate and up to date info on travel advice for India, we advise you to visit the foreign office website.

Follow this link for Indian advice from the UK foreign office. As we are a UK company, this is the official government advice we follow. If you are not a UK resident, we advise you search for the equivalent info from your own country’s foreign office, as travel advice may differ.

What's the minimum number of riders required for this tour? Click to expand

The minimum required number for this trip to run is 6 riders. We reserve the right to cancel the tour if this number is not met and we will provide you with a minimum of 56 days notice. Please know that this is an absolute last resort for us and we will always do everything in our power to avoid this happening.

Which payment methods do you accept? Click to expand

We accept GBP payments by Visa, Mastercard & American Express and direct bank transfers. Please get in touch if you would rather pay in another currency – we’ll do our best to accommodate!

Which plug types are used in India? Click to expand

There are 2 types of sockets in India – 3 Pin connections – Type D, or 2 pin connections -Type C.

Our July Himalayan ride from Shimla to Leh via the rarely travelled Spitti Valley crosses some of the highest passes in the world in an 18 day tour. royal enfield tours 37

Steve Krzystyniak and Lily Guilford have been the proud owner operators of Indian Motorcycle Adventures Ltd for 23 years.

We specialize in motorcycle tours in India and we are the only Australasian company regularly operating tours in Rajasthan. Over our many years of touring in India we have made many friends and are well known and respected there. This enables us to open many secret doors and greatly enhance your experience of India. We operate our company personally maintaining strict quality control over our tours and will assist you from your first enquiry to our Parakai office to our group’s farewell dinner in Delhi. Kamal, our partner of many years operates and runs the Indian side of our operations, bringing a unique local flavour to your journey through his very own backyard. We are experts on all aspects of motorbike touring in India and will personally guide you in all matters from what to eat, to getting a ‘bargain’ souvenir. We offer ‘hands on’ leadership and guidance throughout your adventure.

Why pick Indian Motorcycle Adventures?

Our tours have been developed over 20 years with Kiwi and European bikers in mind, travelling mostly on the picturesque country roads that we are passionate about. We concentrate upon meeting the locals on our journey and immersing our clients in Indian culture. We experience many secret aspects of Indian day-to-day life while staying in high quality and friendly accommodation. Be aware that in recent years a number of both Western and Indian travel operators have been marketing low budget tours which appear to be similar to ours. Some have closely mimicked our web pages and domain name and attempted to follow our itineraries. We have heard a great deal of feedback about some of these newbies and many are in our opinion poorly researched bus tours translated on to bikes. They often travel dangerously long distances almost exclusively along 4 lane highways with almost no cultural input, staying in poor quality hotels. We promise you the motorcycling and cultural experience of a lifetime. If in doubt, ask to speak to some of our many hundreds of past clients from New Zealand and all over the world, we will gladly put you in touch with a number of them, they are still by far our best advert.

Believed to have been built by the Mauryans in the 7th century, the fort saw additional structures added by successive Mewar rulers. We will ride through this remarkable piece of history.

The night will be spent at the secluded Bijaipur Castle, a 16th-century fortress enveloped by fortified walls. Converted into a hotel in 1991 by the ruling family, the castle remains their home. Today’s motorbike ride takes us through the southeastern region, where Rajasthan meets Madhya Pradesh, nestled in a narrow valley amid the Aravalli Hills. After the safari, unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures by the pool. Our accommodation will be at the elegant Nahargarh Palace Hotel, a perfect blend of comfort and nature. Today’s leg of the journey covers approximately 150 km, offering a beautiful blend of relaxation and excitement.

Day 11: Animal Reserve for the Maharajas

Today we will visit the Ranthambhore National Park and with a little bit of luck we can spot tigers, hyenas, bears, crocodiles, and elephants. Historically, Ranthambhore served as a hunting ground for maharajas, enhanced with artificial lakes and watering holes to entice big game. Today, this practice has been replaced by conservation efforts, transforming the area into a sanctuary showcasing some of India’s richest wildlife. Conclude a day of exhilarating animal spotting with another night at the excellent Nahargarh Palace Hotel.

Lake Tso Moriri

Distance covered: approx. 230 km

Day 13: From Royal Enfields to Royal Monuments

No journey through India is complete without witnessing the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal and the historic Red Fort. Early morning, we visit these iconic symbols of love and power. Its breathtaking structure is not just a display of exquisite craftsmanship but also a testament to a timeless romantic saga. Questions & Answers

  • B: India General

Do I need a visa for India?

Visitors to India need a tourist visa, which you must obtain in advance. Visas are not issued on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the period of your stay. The e-Tourist Visa costs around 20 to 80 euros and you can apply for it online. Important note: The terms for the e-Tourist Visa can be found here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html The visa application itself can be found here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/info1.jsp

What do I need to bring along for a motorcycle tour?

You will definitely want to bring your riding suit with protectors and a helmet. You will also need motorcycle boots or lighter riding shoes and gloves. While your gear should be breathable in hot climates, you need to be ready for anything at high altitudes and in the Himalayas. We recommend winter gloves, warm socks, liners for jackets and trousers, a scarf and face protection. Rain gear is a good idea if your riding suit is not waterproof. Please note that we do not hire out clothing. We believe that your own riding gear will fit best and thus give you the best protection. If you forget anything, we’ll find a solution, however. We often have spare gear with us, or we can point you in the direction of a shop.

Do I need travel insurance and travel health insurance?

We always recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover costs incurred if you need to cancel the trip due to illness or other reasons. When shopping for travel health insurance, make sure the policy covers the potentially high cost of medical evacuation to your home country. Both forms of insurance can save you a lot of money in an emergency and we recommend them unreservedly. In many countries, your national motoring organization can provide the coverage you need.

What should I keep in mind when riding with a passenger?

Riding two-up is almost always possible. In difficult terrain or on rough tracks, every passenger has a guaranteed seat in the support vehicle to keep things relaxed for both rider and pillion.

Do pillion passengers have a guaranteed seat in the support vehicle?

Yes, all passengers have a guaranteed seat. In bad weather or challenging riding conditions, they can switch to the support vehicle at any time – and back to the bike when conditions improve.

How big are the groups? What’s the minimum number of participants?

Groups generally consist of 8 to 14 riders and 2 to 6 passengers. The minimum number of participants is 6 riders.

What’s the Classic Bike Adventure travel team like?

Our European tour guides are skilled motorcyclists and inveterate travelers who love India. They’re resilient in the face of stress and know the history and culture of the regions they cover. Our Indian mechanics are experienced Enfield specialists who all speak English and are happy to help with any technical problem, great or small. A stand-in rider is always available. More information on our travel concept is available here .

What kind of bikes will we ride?

We ride 500cc Royal Enfield Bullets manufactured from 2014 to 2017 that feature electric starters, 5-speed gearboxes with the gearshift on the left, front disk brakes, roomy and rugged leather saddlebags, crashbars, 19” tires and twin horns.

What do I need in the way of documents?

You will need your passport, national driving license, international driving license and flight ticket. Please be sure to make photocopies of all of your important travel documents and carry them separately. They can be invaluable in an emergency.

What are the import regulations for India?

Up to 200 cigarettes and 2 liters of alcohol may be imported duty-free. All international cigarette and spirits brands are available in India. Customs checks of arriving tourists have become considerably less strict in recent years.

Do I need a driving license?

All riders must have a valid motorcycle driving license issued in their home country. An international driving license is also required. Be sure to contact the relevant authorities in your home country well in advance for more information on obtaining an international driving license.

Will I need maps?

Simple street maps are often available locally. The best road maps are available from the German publishers Reise Know How and Nelles. These are only available in specialized bookstores or online.

Where can I stow my bags?

Your baggage will be carried by the support vehicle. Please don’t pack too much – remember: less is more. From time to time, we’ll have to carry our baggage over short distances to the hotel. Baggage is not insured, so please be sure to purchase your own baggage insurance for the trip if necessary. Your personal items for the day are best kept in the saddlebags or your daypack. Tank bags – including magnetic ones – can be used on the Enfields, but we don’t provide them.

Do I need to buy an Indian SIM card for my phone?

European SIM cards now work almost everywhere in India. You’ll need patience if you want a local SIM card, as the registration takes a minimum of three days, and in some regions it is not possible at all.

How much is the deposit for the bike?

Riders must make a deposit of USD/EUR 500.00 in cash for their bikes. The deposit will be refunded when the bike is returned in good condition. The deposit corresponds to the comprehensive insurance deductible for damage to the rented bike and damage or injuries to third parties caused by the rider. (The deductible is payable in such cases!)

Important note: The deductible also applies to damage or injury to third parties. In practice, the rider is initially liable for the full damages. The costs are later refunded by the insurance company, minus the deductible.

What are the specs of the bikes?

Technical specifications: Single-cylinder four-stroke, 499 cc, 16 kW (28 bhp) at 4,600 rpm, 178 kg, 80 cm seat height, 123 kph max.

Our Enfields were manufactured from 2013 to 2017 and are well-maintained. Naturally, some of them bear the minor battle scars typical of touring motorcycles. Technically, they are all in top shape and perfectly suited to the planned tours. They’re tremendous fun to ride, and their handling is safe and predictable after a brief familiarization period. Our average speeds on the tour range from 40 to 60 kph, depending on the road conditions and traffic.

On which side do you ride in India?

Indians drive on the left. The flexible and generally considerate driving style of the locals makes it easy to adjust to riding on the “wrong side” and coping with traffic conditions that initially seem chaotic. The behavior of pedestrians and cyclists, and the frequent presence of animals on the road call for considerably more attention, however. Extreme caution is required around children. Further information on traffic and riding can be found here and here .

What kind of food and drinks will we be having in India?

Western food is generally not available, so we’ll be having simple, often vegetarian meals as well as regional specialties throughout the tour. Hearty breakfasts will not always be available. We can promise you a wide range of cuisine, with a special emphasis on local specialties. In general, a lot of curry is served in India, and little meat – chicken being the most common non-vegetarian food – but plenty of vegetables, legumes and rice. Indian cuisine is generally well-spiced, easily digestible and not overly hot. Vegetarians will have no problems in India. Indian beer is not always up to international standards. The most common brands are Kingfisher, Castle and San Miguel. The local Chang beer is quite effective but requires a bit of getting used to. Wine – when it’s available – is even more of an acquired taste than Chang. Mineral water and beverages such as Coca Cola can be purchased anywhere and must be carried individually.

Should I bring Indian rupees to India, or are US dollars preferable?

You are not allowed to bring Indian currency into the country or take it out. You may bring the equivalent of up to US$ 5,000 in foreign currency into the country without prior notice. We recommend bringing euros in €50 and €100 notes. Please make a note of the daily exchange rate to avoid getting a bad rate at the airport. American Express Traveler’s Cheques are no longer in common use and will cause unnecessary hassles. Credit cards (Maestro, Visa and MasterCard) with PINs can be used for cash advances from ATMs in many towns. You will need the equivalent of around €100 to €150 for drinks, lunch and tips per week.

What’s a typical day on the road like?

A travel day normally begins at 8 am with breakfast. Around 9 am, after a short briefing by the road captain, it’s time for the day’s riding, the mileage of which can vary quite a bit. Plenty of time will be available for lunch and coffee breaks, of course. Depending on the day’s mileage, we’ll reach the destination hotel between 3 and 4 pm. Since our tours vary considerably, we may also hit the road at 8 am on high-mileage days – which is also nice, because then we have the whole day ahead of us.

What’s the time difference?

Indian standard time is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT.

Ride the Kah Loops,  cross the clanking metal bridges and make your way through the gorges and cliffs of rock. Tonight is glamping in one of the most serene places on this planet.

Day 5 – Nako to Kaza - Travelling Distance: 115 km Gorgeous day riding, down through the rock, and trying not to be distracted by the stunning views. Stop at Tabo Monastery for lunch, the oldest continuously operating monastery in India (and possibly the Himalayas).  Finish the day touring along the Spiti River to Kaza.

Day 5 – Kaza Rest day in Kaza. Wander around town, or ride to Hikkim and the highest post office in the world. Well worth the short trip to post some cards home, and then head on to the highest village in the world.  Second night in Kaza.

Day 7 – Kaza to Chandratal Lake - Travelling Distance: 100 km Great days riding with everything in it. Rock, water crossings, gravel, narrow roads. Everything about today is big - vast scenery and adventurous riding.  This road is only open from May to around October, otherwise, it is blanketed in snow and impassable.  Visit  possibly the most beautiful lake in the region, Chandratal Lake.

Day 8 – Chandratal to Keylong - Travelling Distance: 115 km

Another great day riding, dipping down the green mountains, and awesome water crossings (our support staff will give you a hand if you need one). Onto the famous Manali-Leh highway into the village of Keylong. Ano

Day 9 – Keylong to Sarchu - Travelling Distance: 100 km Heading out of the tranquil valley, up to Baralacha Pass, the highest pass in the Zanskar region.  We stop at dhabas along the way for chai and lunch and end up at the high plains of Sarchu camp. Dinner, campfire and stories from the day.

Day 10 - Sarchu to Leh -  Travelling Distance: 260 km

Another favourite day's riding. Heading out in the morning, today is a showcase of the best Himalayan motorcycle travel. From riding the Gata Loop hairpins to blasting across the More Plains and going over the second-highest motorable pass in the world (Tangla La). You then dip down the twisty roads into Leh, past the Buddhist monastery and prayer flags, to finish in this Ladakh township.

Day 11 - Leh Sight Seeing

Day off, sightseeing in mountain-framed Leh. Visit the market for souvenir shopping, lunch overlooking the square, or head out to the 16th-century Tsemo Fort and Leh Palace. Ask your guide for suggestions.

Day 12 - Leh to Airport

Goodbye from the Himalayas. We drop you at the airport for your transfer if you are flying out. The flight out of Leh will take you over the majestic Himalayas that you have just toured on a Royal Enfield, taking home some awesome stories.

Royal Enfield introduces 'Rental & Tours' globally

Royal Enfield has expanded its rental business globally, introducing "Rentals and Tours" in over 25 countries and covering more than 60 destinations. This initiative, following the introduction of Royal Enfield Rentals in India, aims to redefine motorcycle tourism by providing a comprehensive platform for travellers seeking motorcycle adventures.

The "Rentals and Tours" programme claims to offer a one-stop solution for motorcycle journeys. With accredited partners worldwide, the platform caters to various riding preferences, including terrain and expertise levels. It comprises motorcycle rentals, professionally guided tours, and assistance in curating self-guided trips.

royal enfield tours 37

Royal Enfield provides these services through a third-party, accredited tour and rental partner. Booking a tour package or renting a motorcycle is made easy through the Royal Enfield website, where users can browse available bike options at their desired destination, select rental partners, and book in advance by paying the rent and refundable security deposit.

Although the online rental service offers convenience and ease of booking, Royal Enfield says that it is not directly involved in the payment process. Cancelling a booking requires contacting the tour and rental partner directly. Further, some travellers have noticed that the rental prices displayed on Royal Enfield's website is higher compared to those offered by local rental service providers.
