Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox . You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here .

Welcome to Racked's first annual Travel Week . Over the next five days, roughly half of our content will be devoted to everything you need to know about traveling to and from New York City—whether you're entertaining out-of-towners, killing time at the airport, or planning the ultimate staycation.

Let's face it: we've all been guilty of being a last-minute packer at some point in our lives—throwing everything into a ratty old suitcase or duffel bag from a high school sports team a couple hours before takeoff, forgetting a toothbrush or socks in the process , and then having to throw away an expensive hairspray bottle at security because it's larger than 3.4 ounces. But with all the New York destinations for travel shopping, there are more than a few reasons to look forward to packing.

In honor of Travel Week, here are 25 of the best stores to hit up before hailing a cab to JFK or LaGuardia. This list goes waaay beyond the basic suitcase stores to cover everything (no seriously, everything) that might be needed for a getaway—that includes beauty products, reading material, entertainment for kids, and even extra underwear. Check out the map after the jump to see where to pick up the essential travel goodies and more. Is a favorite spot not included? Let us know in the comments section below.

Where to Go Shopping in NYC: Our 20 Picks

By Andrea Whittle

New York City Shopping No. 6

In an era when pretty much anything can be two-day-shipped to your house and high streets in major cities around the world are lined with a lot of the same storefronts, the point of shopping IRL seems increasingly moot. But once in a while, you walk into a store that feels like a genuine discovery, where browsing the shelves and racks stocked with things you can’t find anywhere else is an activity in itself. Beyond the Zara-fied scrums of Soho and 5th Avenue, New York City is still filled with these kinds of places—in fact, we could go on forever listing hundreds of niche shops, from a showroom that specializes in animal skulls to an emporium devoted entirely to high-end buttons. But here, we tried to distill it down to an array of stores that have a distinctively New York identity, where you’ll find exciting clothes, gifts and decor by independent designers (plus a few wild cards, like an old school Upper East Side pharmacy and a beloved Tribeca party store). Here, our take on the best shopping in New York City.

ABC Carpet Home

ABC Carpet & Home Arrow

ABC Carpet & Home is first and foremost a furniture showroom and rug store. But the shop also stocks original decor and accessories from around the world, hippie-chic fine jewelry, and luxury bath and beauty products with a wellness bent. Unless you're looking to furnish your home, stick to the main floor, where you'll find a trove of jewelry, candles, tabletop wares, objets d'art, and apothecary items. Bed linens, bath towels, and throw pillows upholstered in fringed velvet and intricate embroidery are on the basement level. And if you get hungry, three onsite restaurants, Abc Kitchen, Abc Cocina, and Abcv, all from by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, are destinations in themselves.

Bird Brooklyn

Bird, a cozy, multi-brand women's boutique beloved by trendy Brooklyn moms, is known for its cheerful selection of goods from indie designers. You'll find the latest bags and ready-to-wear from Mansur Gavriel, block-heeled boots and sandals, whatever this year's trendy statement coat is, pleated separates by Issey Miyake, and lots of flowy, printed dresses from No.6 and Rachel Comey. Don't miss the delicately painted and gilded ceramic cups and bowls by Suzanne Sullivan.

New York City Shopping Roman and Williams Guild

Roman and Williams Guild Arrow

Roman and Williams Guild, a furniture showroom, café, florist, and home decor shop in one, is the first retail outpost from architecture firm Roman and Williams (the team behind oft-instagrammed restaurant and hotel interiors like Le Coucou and the Freehand). Basically, if you've ever eaten or spent the night in one of the firm's spaces and thought to yourself, "I'd like my house to be more like this," this is the store for you. If you stop in, take a moment to run your hands over the sheepskins draped over the display beds in the back, and to smell the in-house scented candles.

Default

Zitomer Arrow

Zitomer is the ultimate version of a uniquely Manhattan phenomenon: The fancy, retro pharmacy where you can get your prescriptions filled but also easily drop $600 on velvet headbands. This wacky three-story storefront on Madison Avenue is a microcosm of everything that's simultaneously appealing and vexatious about the Upper East Side. You'll find lots of old-school hair accessories, fancy European toothpaste, an extensive lineup of bath and body products from Molton Brown and Kiehl's, decorative compact mirrors, and zip pouches that say things like "But First, Xanax."

2024 Readers' Choice Awards Survey

Artists & Fleas Arrow

Artists & Fleas permanent set up in Soho (there is also a weekends-only marketplace in Williamsburg) is a great place to pick up souvenirs made by local artisans. The booths are run by young entrepreneurial types selling original, relatively inexpensive jewelry, decor, or Brooklyn-y souvenirs, like cheeky, screen-printed T-shirts or soy-wax candles. There's also a solid vintage selection, with permanent booths like Thriftwares selling on-trend bags and out-there dresses.

New York City Shopping No. 6

No. 6 Arrow

If you were asked to describe the platonic ideal of an indie designer boutique, you'd get pretty close to No.6. Racks filled with drapey, delicately ruched, and patterned clothes rub elbows with pots of meandering ivy in a white-walled room filled with natural light. Alongside a house line, the shop stocks clothes and accessories from other like-minded designers: raffia tote bags by Karakoram and swingy printed dresses by Atelier Delphine. But No.6 is best known for its wooden-heeled clogs, which have become a calling card for certain Brooklyn creatives.

New York City Shopping Coming Soon

Coming Soon Arrow

In a world where contemporary high-end homeware stores range from aggressively minimalist to downright somber, Coming Soon, a Lower East Side shop, is a jam-packed, Technicolor breath of fresh air. You could walk in, close your eyes, spin around and point, and you'd land on a perfectly original gift every time. It's fresh, cheeky, and cheerful, with a lot of stuff you didn't even know you needed, but once you've seen it, you absolutely have to have.

John Derian Company Arrow

John Derian Company, an East Village home decor brand, is a maximalist fantasyland filled with delightful, strange, wonderful things, from cake-shaped candles and plush velvet turtles to 19th-century French market baskets. The block feels like a mini fiefdom of shops, with the original store, a furniture showroom, and a dry goods shop. Alongside Derian's own charming decoupage paperweights and decorative dishes, the main store stocks marbled ceramics and incense by Astier de Villatte, kooky Italian candles shaped like frosted layer cakes or wheels of cheese, and matchboxes too pretty to keep hidden in a drawer.

New York City Shopping Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony Arrow

Opening Ceremony has been one of the city's most consistent arbiters of cool since it opened in 2002. Stocked with clothes and accessories that are colorful, often funky, occasionally over-the-top, and edgy—but never self-serious—it's partially responsible for the transformation of Howard Street into a Murderers' Row of indie designer boutiques; in fact, some people jokingly refer to the area as "Clout Alley." In short: it's the epitome of Downtown cool. (P.S. Make sure to check out the basement—that's where all the shoes and sale merch live.)

New York City Shopping Warm

As its name suggests, Warm stocks clothes made for hot weather, books and decor meant to cozy with at home, and products and candles that smell like a day at the beach. The overall vibe is summery and downright celebratory, a riot of bright colors, punchy patterns, and plush textures. You'll find flowy, bohemian resort wear that reads as California fancy; on the racks, jeans by Re/Done hang next to cashmere wrap cardigans by Ryan Roche and maxi dresses by Raquel Allegra. On the tables, smudge sticks share space with Wary Meyers candles.

New York City Shopping EAT Gifts

E.A.T. Gifts Arrow

At E.A.T. Gifts, a quirky gift and party-supplies store, you'll find stylish greeting cards, miniature dachshund figurines, pillows shaped like sushi rolls, and lots of novelty mugs, cosmetic pouches, and stationery. A good portion of the shop gets changed around depending on the upcoming holiday—they're particularly good around Valentine's Day, when you can pick up hand-packed sacks of tinfoil-wrapped chocolate hearts, or Christmas, when they stock delicate German glass ornaments and beautiful wrapping paper. Make sure you look up and down: Shelves are stocked floor-to-ceiling with a dizzying variety of stuff.

Maryam Nassir Zadeh Arrow

There are plenty of painfully hip, but ultimately mediocre, boutiques on the Lower East Side. This is not one of them. The overall vibe at Maryam Nassir Zadeh is meditative, studied, and genuinely cool. Just perusing the racks of the airy shop on Norfolk street yields some genuine fashion revelations, ones gleaned from Zadeh's own elegantly spare collection and other, lesser-known designers like Prisca Vera and Bless. Don't leave without trying on the ballet flats.

Clothing in Dover Street Market New York

Dover Street Market New York Arrow

Dover Street is more than just a luxury department store; it’s a fashion-meets-art exhibition space. Featured designers configure their own display areas, allowing the shopper to interact with the clothes in a holistic manner that takes you inside the designer’s world—as opposed to just picking through dresses hanging on a metal rack. Also don’t miss the ground-floor café, Rose Bakery.

New York City Shopping Totokaelo

Totokaelo Arrow

Originally based in Seattle, Totokaelo brought its unique approach to multi-brand retail to Soho in 2015. Somewhere between indie boutique and designer department store, the shop stocks clothing, accessories, and home decor with a distinctively modern, highbrow point of view. Dresses by Zero + Maria Cornejo and Collina Strada share space with Noguchi lamps and ceramics, which look like they came straight out of a Morandi painting. The whole place, in fact, feels like an art gallery. Don't leave without admiring the avant garde shoe collection.

New York City Shopping Housing Works

Housing Works Soho Thrift Shop Arrow

The Soho location of Housing Works, a beloved local thrift chainlet (there are other outposts Uptown, in Chelsea, and in Park Slope) is where you have the best chance of finding real bargain treasure. Like any thrift store, there's plenty of stuff that ranges from just OK to downright junky, but the shop is also known as a dumping ground for local fashionistas who are trying to make space in their closets. So you just might find a pair of good-as-new Maryam Nassir Zadeh mules, or a faux fur teddy coat. Remember: Take your time, and don't be disappointed if you don't find anything on your first visit.

Balloon Saloon

Balloon Saloon Arrow

If you're walking down West Broadway, the array of gigantic pool floats—shaped like doughnuts, stacks of dollar bills, slices of pizza, and emojis—hanging from the awning make the aptly named Balloon Saloon impossible to miss. But the balloons are just the beginning. Inside, the shop is stocked floor-to-ceiling with gifts, fun toys, and wildly original party supplies, including ladybug-shaped piñatas, candy cigarettes, Groucho Marx glasses, jokey picture books, Spiderman toys, raffia party hats, and silly birthday cards.

Blue Tree Arrow

Blue Tree is wonderfully impossible to categorize. Calling it a gift shop would cheapen it, but that's sort of the function it serves for the neighborhood—a place to buy thoughtful, unique presents that you really won't find anywhere else. In front, cases filled with obscure, decadent jewelry line the walls. Toward the back, you'll find everything from whisper-thin cashmere shawls, fig-scented Sicilian soaps, cheeky novelty socks, hourglasses filled with neon sand, luxurious flannel PJs, and notebooks wrapped in marbled paper.

New York City Shopping Rachel Comey

Rachel Comey Arrow

Slightly hidden from the Soho fray on an unassuming stretch of Crosby Street, the Rachel Comey boutique feels like an oasis. Comey's clothing is thoughtful and feminine but never prissy, beautifully cut, and texturally sumptuous. And the store itself is stunning: pebbled concrete floors, low-slung leather seating, and fitting rooms that look like they belong in a Milanese palazzo—a Milanese palazzo that got a particularly good mid-century renovation. If you're looking for a show-stopping party look, you've come to the right place.

New York City Shopping Bergdorf Goodman

Bergdorf Goodman Arrow

Of all the famous New York City department stores, Bergdorf Goodman is arguably the most iconic. And unlike some of its peers, it delivers on the promise of serious luxury and old-school glamour. You may not discover any cutting-edge young designers here, but you'll get a kick out of the whole experience: Bags and jewelry are displayed like works of art, the beauty department is a treasure trove of scent and color, and some would describe a visit to the shoe salon as a quasi-religious experience. It's not entirely Manolos and Oscar de la Renta cocktail dresses though (but mostly it is), lower-priced contemporary collections, like Ganni and Etoile Isabel Marant, on the fifth floor

New York City Shopping Amarcord Vintage Fashion

Amarcord Vintage Fashion Arrow

Amarcord Vintage Fashion is one of the city's best vintage stores, with a selection that skews more toward high-end designers than it does thrifty treasures. The shop has a sleek, curated vibe, with racks organized vaguely by color and bags and jewelry on display in the back. This store is all about iconic stuff from big names: classic printed Pucci scarves, prim Gucci duffels from the Tom Ford era, and modish '60s Balenciaga accessories. After you've browsed the racks, make an appointment at the shop's nearby archive and showroom if you're a serious vintage hunter,.

My Conclusion

NYC is home to many big brand names and their flagship stores, but a few stand out among the rest. Whether you’re looking for something high-end or fashionable, these flagship stores in NYC have everything from clothing to accessories to home goods.

What makes these flagship stores in New York so special is everything from the architecture to the interior design of these stores. So if you want to get the most out of your shopping on your next visit, be sure to check them out!

Where are the flagship stores located?

Most flagship stores are located along 5th Avenue and in the SoHo neighborhood. The Meatpacking District also has several flagship stores, most notably Diane von Fürstenberg. Personally, I am curious to see how Hudson Yards will develop. Shortly after the opening of the mall at The Vessel , some stores had to close.

Are flagship stores in NYC cheaper?

It depends: especially the flagship stores of sports brands like adidas, Nike or PUMA offer not only a large selection but also lower prices than comparable stores. The well-known luxury brands are not really cheaper. I have noticed that the stores that are not on 5th Avenue give discounts more often. This is also due to the fact that rental prices on 5th Avenue are among the highest in NYC.

Where to Stay in NYC

Not sure where to stay the next time you’re in the city and looking for some of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget?

If so then here are my picks for some of the all-time best hotels in NYC right now!

Pod 39 (Budget)

Probably one of my fave hotels in NYC if you’re on a budget, Pod 39 can be found in Murray Hill, which is a neighborhood that is home to some of the best Indian food in the city. It’s also a sleek, modern, pod hotel where rooms start at $273 per night.

And while the rooms are “cozy”, everything is clean. You also get to stay inside a residential home from 1918 and can choose between queen-size beds or stainless-steel bunk beds with TVs and bedside shelves.

The Arlo Midtown (Midrange)

Centrally located in Times Square, rooms here start at around $372 per night. The Arlo Midtown features a shared lounge and fitness center. It even has free bicycle rentals.

So, book a sleek, updated room inside this boutique hotel in Hell’s Kitchen and chic suites with Belgian linens, iPod docks, flatscreen TVs, and WiFi that overlook a scenic courtyard.

The James New York (Midrange)

Located in NOMAD, this sleek hotel is known for its clean and comfy, well-appointed rooms that start at $177 per night. They’re also very well-appointed and include high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, glassed-off bathrooms, and comfy linens made.

Lotte New York Palace (Luxury)

A gorgeous, 4.5-star hotel in Midtown East that is probably the best hotel in all of NYC.

It also sits inside a former 19th-century mansion just across the street from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and has opulent suites with WiFi, flatscreen TVs, designer toiletries, and more. You can also order 24/7 room service and or hit up the on-site spa, French bakery, and wood-paneled bar.

You can even check out the best drag brunch in New York City since it is right nearby.

Best Places to Shop in NYC on a Budget – Manhattan

🛒 On the look out for an epic shopping tour? Try the Woodbury Commons tour. It takes you to places where you can find designer wear for cheap! 🛒

1. Housing Works Thrift Store

Clothing all laid out from one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget, including a watch, sunglasses, high heels, a purse, and more.

This is one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget that I’ve visited many times since this company runs one of the best bookstores in NYC just next door to this amazing thrift store.

However, it is a thrift store. So, translation? You WILL have to do some serious digging if you want to find anything decent.

But, the prices are great and this is one of the best stores in NYC that supports a really good cause. See, all of the money that is made from items sold here is actually donated to help the homeless and people afflicted with AIDS all across the globe.

So, this is one of the cool stores in NYC that you can feel good about shopping at since you’re actually helping the world too.

And while you’re here you can even sell some of your own goods or just cruise the racks for vintage designs by Gucci, Givenchy, DVF, etc.

Therefore, be sure to stop by one of the best cheap clothing stores in NYC so that you can sell some of your old pieces and pick up some cool designer duds from DVF, Givenchy, Gucci, and more.

Address: 130 Crosby Street (There are other locations in South Slope Brooklyn, Yorkville, and the Upper West Side)

Hours: Open daily from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm and closes at 5:00 pm on Sundays.

How to Get There: Take the 6, F, R, or C subway lines to stations near Crosby Street.

2. Bloomingdale Outlet

Located on NYC’s ultra-snazzy Upper West Side, the Bloomingdale Outlet is a heavily discounted branch of the immortal “Bloomies” department store.

You know, that iconic place that has those paper shopping bags with the iconic words, “big brown bag” emblazoned on them.

Well, it actiially all started in 1872 when the Bloomingdale brothers opened their east side bazaar.

And since then, this place has become so beloved that people now purchase reusable versions of the store’s classic disposable bags.

Yeah, crazy but totally true.

So, if you’re looking for cheap things to buy in NYC, skip Bloomies and hit up the outlet instead.

Trust me, you’ll find designer items from Marc Jacobs, Free People, and Theory at up to 30% off regular prices.

And while you may have to dig around a bit, it’s worth for great prices like these – especially since you can sometimes find items for sale at 50%-80% off.

Pro Tip: This outlet actually has a great frozen yogurt shop called “Forty Carrots”. So, head to the top floor and grab a tasty treat after enjoying some of the best shopping in NYC.

They also have great merch so this is one of the best places to celebrate your birthday in NYC if you like shopping.

3. Century 21

PLEASE NOTE: As of right now, I don’t think any Century 21 stores are open in NYC. However, this is one of those immortal places to shop in NYC that is supposed to be reopening sometime soon. So, definitely do your research before attempting to shop here.

Not to be confused with the real estate icon of the same name. Century 21 is an amazing chain of discount stores where you can find some of the best cheap shopping in NYC.

In fact, they offer a wide variety of designer items (think accessories, shoes, men’s/women’s clothing, etc.) that are offered at up to 70% off traditional prices.

Plus, these aren’t lame items that are out of style and from 12 years ago. Yeah, hell to the no.

Instead, these are super fashion-forward pieces that you can purchase at a fraction of their regular retail price.

Some of their stores are also hella big and are spread out across seven different floors, providing you with ample space to shop.

Therefore, be sure to add this place to your NYC itinerary if you love looking for cheap things to buy in NYC.

4. Necessary Clothing

Vintage dress with yellow stripes and a jean jacket from one of the spots for the best shopping in NYC.

Going to grab some delicious pizza from Lombardi’s in Little Italy? If so then be sure to stop by the one and only Necessary Clothing while you’re here.

After all, it’s easily one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget that is known for selling stylish clothes at reasonable prices.

So, enjoy a wide array of clothing items for less than $50.00 each while you’re here.

However, if you’re not planning to explore NYC in the near future, then take advantage of their robust online store.

Yeah, it features high-quality women’s clothing (think $20 for a dress) that can be shipped all across the USA.

Now if only everything in life was that crazy affordable. SIGH.

Address: 442 Broadway, New York, New York

Hours: Open Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 8:30 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm.

How to Get There : Take the 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R, or W to Canal Street and walk from there.

Tucked away in the always fabulous East Village, AuH20 was first opened in ye olde 2006 and is one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget that is known for selling vintage, secondhand clothing.

So, you’ll find a wide array of pieces here with a distinct 80s/90s era vibe about them.

Plus, everything here is completely upcycled, has a fun and funky vibe about it, and is available to purchase for prices that range between $5 and $25 each.

However, you are forbidden from leaving one of the best cheap clothing stores in NYC without hitting up their amazing assortment of accessories.

Yes, they are uber-fab and yes they retail for amazingly cheap prices that range between $3.00 and $30.00 each.

Now, go forth, shop for amazingly cheap things to buy in New York, and be the perpetually happy human that I know you are.

Hours: They are currently open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

How to get there: Take the R or W train to 8th Street station or the 6 train to Astor Place station and walk to the store from there.

With locations scattered all across the city, INA NYC is easily one of my top picks for one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget.

After all, this incredible, super reputable consignment store has been around since 1993 and has an amazing location in Nolita that you 110% MUST visit.

Yeah, INA has a great reputation for reselling nothing but the highest quality items (aka they take quality very seriously and accept only the best merchandise) at ridiculously discounted prices.

So, expect to find a ton of trending, fashion-forward pieces that you can actually afford from legendary designers like Chanel, Bally, Pucci, and more!

Address: 21 Prince Street

Hours: Open daily from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

How to Get There: Take the 6, R, W, or N trains since they all have stops near Prince Street.

7. DSW at Union Square

Pair of navy blue, slip-on shoes from one of the best places to shop on a budget in NYC.

Are you a shoe addict? Yeah, you and me both since trying on shoes never makes me feel fat.

So, if you love shoes almost as much as I do, then beeline it on over to the giant DSW in Union Square.

Yes, I know this is a chain store that isn’t exclusive to NYC. But, their Union Square outpost is still one of the best places to shop on a budget in NYC.

After all, you’ll find any and every shoe you can imagine on display here, spread out across floor after floor.

Heck, the building even comes outfitted with centrally located escalators to make things even easier as you carry around enormous boxes of discount shoes.

But, this DSW is so big that it can actually feel overwhelming to naviagte. So, to make things even easer, check out:

  • clearance shoes in the way back
  • dressy heels in the back right
  • fashionable sneakers and athletic sneakers in the middle right
  • rain boots/men’s shoes on the left

Address: 40 E 14th St, New York, NY

Hours: Open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and on Sundays from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

How to Get There : Take the 4/5/N/Q/R/ W to Union Square and walk from there.

8. Vintage Thrift Shop

This is one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget that is also totally non-profit.

Therefore, all of the proceeds here go towards funding the United Jewish Council of the East Side (HOORAY).

However, because all of the items sold here are donated, you will have to do a bit of digging to find a buried treasure or two.

But, it may be worth it since people have been known to find vintage Yves Saint Laurent blouses for $12.00 (FYI, that was at the Gramercy location).

On the whole though, you should expect to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $95.00 for a old-school Fendi bag.

Just be forewarned that merchandise here can get moved around a lot. So, if you find something you can’t live without, be sure to buy it ASAP.

Pro Tip: Head to the West Village outpost if you’re looking for designer items.

Address: 286 Third Avenue, between 22 & 23 Streets (Gramercy), and 242 West 10th Street, between Bleecker & Hudson (West Village)

Hours : Open daily from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm but CLOSED on Saturdays (weird but true).

How to Get There : To get to the Gramercy location, take the 4,5,6 to the E 26th st station. For the West Village location, take the 1,2, or 3 train to the Christopher Street Station.

9. Cure Thrift Shop

If you would describe yourself as quirky to the extreme then this is one of the best places to shop on a budget in NYC for you!

Because Cure Thrift Shop is one of those magical places that specializes in one-of-a-kind, vintage pieces that include everything from typewriters to sewing machines and old-school jewelry cases.

Plus, they are all fully functional, just in case you were curious.

However, be sure to head straight down to the basement since I know you’re really here for the bookcases filled with clothing and shoes.

Plus, added bonus? Everything donated here is in almost perfect condition. Items on sale also fairly diverse, thereby catering to a wide array of styles.

Customer service is also pretty great. However, do check those price tags since some items can seel for close to retail price. That being said though, all proceeds go towards funding the Diabetes Research Institute.

So, this is another one of those spots for the best shopping in NYC that you really can feel good abut supporting.

Pro Tip: Stop by twice a year for their, “$15 anything you can fit into this bag” event.

Address: 111 E 12th Street between 3rd Ave & 4th Ave

Hours: Open Monday through Sunday from 12 pm to 9 pm.

How to Get There: Take the L train to the 3rd Avenue Station and walk from there.

10. Buffalo Exchange

Vintage clothes from one of the best places for shopping in New York on a budget.

Love fashion but only have the budget for a thrift store? If so then Buffalo Exchange is easily one of the best places to shop in NYC for you!

I mean, not only do they have outposts in Manhattan and Brooklyn but it’s a fantastic thrift shop that sells a variety of different “pre-owned” items.

Plus, they specialize in “fast fashion” or items that have been released within the previous two years or so.

Therefore, you’ll definitely have to do a fair bit of digging if you want to find something decent. However, everything here is pretty on tend and from brands like H&M, Zara, etc.

However, it’s not unheard of to find items that still have the original tags on them.

So, keep your eyes open as you swan dive into the budget shopping awesomeness that is Buffalo Excahnge.

Address: 323 East 11th Street, New York, NY (With other outposts in Brooklyn and on West 26th Street)

Hours: Open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday/Saturday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

How to Get There: Take the L train, get off at 1st Avenue, and walk from there.

11. 260 Sample Sale, Final Sale

So, sample sales are kind of a big deal in NYC.

But, just in case you have no idea what they are, they are like these epic unicorns of the fashion world where you can find samples and prototypes from high-end designers for about a third of the retail price.

However, many sample sales today also feature a ton of overstocked/out of season goods too – some of which are reduced to the price of production if you’re exceptionally lucky.

Now, generally speaking, these type of sales are unannounced and pop-up for a just few short hours sporadically across the city.

They also make for some of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget since you can purchase everything from Reformation dresses to Rebecca Minkoff purses and Spritual Gangster t-shirts.

Now, to find some of these awesome sample sales for yourself, just hit up 260 Sample Sale, Final Sale on the Upper West Side or in Noho.

Once here, you can now enjoy sample sale awesomeness all day every day!

Yup! Imagine an array of high-quality goods that are for sale at sample sale prices – minus the annoyance of frantaically running around the city as you chase the latest and greatest impromptu sample sale.

Therefore, expect items here to be priced anywhere between $30.00 and $300.00 each.

Also, since stock is constantly changing, you’ll always be able to find something new to buy (sorry wallet).

And since their stock is constantly changing, you can stop by whenever you want and always find something new. Yeah, your wallet totally hates me right now.

Address: 704 Broadway New York, NY (There is also a second location on the Upper West Side).

Hours: Open daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

How to Get There: Take the 6 train to Astor Place Station and walk from there.

12. Beacon’s Closet

With outposts in Park Slope, Bushwick, and Greenwich Village, Beacon’s Closet is a convenient choice if you’re looking for one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget.

However, since they buy, sell, and trade pre-owned clothes here, you will have to hunt for a bargain.

Which is fine since this place is chic and Insta-perfect with stunning, floral wallpaper and glittery beyond belief chandeliers dangling from the ceiling.

You should also expect to encounter things like a Marc Jacob’s Jacket for $30.00 and a Christian Dior blazer for $25.00 (whoop, whoop).

Other highlights include quirky accessories that add just the right amount of “pop” to any neutral outfit..

Pro Tip: If you want to make a little extra money then sell your pre-owned, in-season clothes here for 35% of the original price (or get 55% off an in-store purchase).

Address: 10 W 13th St, New York, NY 10011

Hours: Open daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

How to Get There: Take the N/R/W train to 14th Street and Union Square station and walk from there.

13. Hester Street Fair

A collection of antiques including glass bottles, lamps and ceramics stacked on a table in one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget

Love searching for hidden gems at your favorite NYC flea market? If so then the Hester Street Fair is a top pick for one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget.

See, this iconic street fair/flea market has been in around since 2010. However, it actually lost the lease for its original location on Hester Street, which made everyone in the budget shopping world super sad.

However, they semi-recently relocated to a temporary location in the Seaport area. So, be sure to stop by and peruse wares and clothes from various vendors.

And while they are currently closed for the season, stay tuned as they move to a new location sometime this year.

Pro Tip: The Hester Street Fair likes to host popular Vintage Day that you might want to check out, in addition, to live music and other special events.

Address: 142 Henry St, New York, NY 10002

How to Get There: Take the F train to East Broadway and walk from there.

What Goes Around Comes Around aka WGACA is really one of the coolest places to shop in NYC on a budget. This store has been around for over 30 years and the vintage bags here will make your heart sing. All for a budget price mind you.

There are a couple of things that set WGACA apart from other vintage stores. For one, the staff… From the point you enter to the time you buy your bag(s), there will always be someone helping you out. They even ask you a number of questions so that they can help you find the perfect fit for you!

Worried about authenticity? The bags here are meticulously checked and they come with a guarantee. Bag shopping does not get better than this!

Address: Between Broome Street and Grand Street, 351 W Broadway, New York, NY 10013, United States

Hours: Mon – Sat: 11am – 7pm, Sun: 12 – 6pm

How To Get There: Take the train to Canal St. Walk from there.

15. Macy’s

Macy’s is one of the popular stores in the city. This is because Macy’s offers some really incredible discounts which makes it one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget. I’m not kidding… Ask any New Yorker! They will tell you that I’m right.

Macy’s however does require a bit of planning to head to. First off… The best sales are always around the holidays. And yes shopping at Macy’s is one of the top things to do in the Christmas season in NYC . I mean where else can you find epic gifts at reasonable prices? Oh and if you are looking for truly epic souvenirs from NYC head to the ornament section in December.

Pro Tip: Head to the clearance section of Macy’s. There are always some amazing discounts here. You can get up to 70 percent off various items!

Address: 151 W 34th St., New York, NY 10001, United States

Hours: Monday to Thursday: 10am – 9pm, Friday to Saturday: 10am – 10pm, Sunday: 11am – 9pm

How To Get There: Take the train to 34th St / Herald Sq. Walk from there.

16. Mystique Boutique

If you are in the Broadway area, you will find an uber cool shop called the Mystique Boutique. This is a great place to browse if you are looking for trendy clothing that is under $30. Oh and just because it is budget don’t make the mistake of assuming that it is not trendy. In fact, you will find all kinds of accessories here and that includes super comfy shoes.

In addition to this, Mystique Boutique is known for its stylish dresses, tops, pants and even swimwear. The downside here is that they don’t have a fitting room and can be a bit picky about returns. If you don’t mind the substandard customer service, you will find that this place does have some stellar deals throughout the year.

It is also a cool alternative to Zara and H&M which are also in the same area. So pop by and see if something catches your fancy before heading to these branded outlets.

Pro Tip: Mystique Boutique will be opening an online store soon so you can check out their merchandise before you head to town which will save you loads of travel time!

Address: 547 Broadway, New York, NY 10012, United States

Hours: Open everyday from 10am to 9 pm

How To Get There: Take the bus to Broadway / Spring St

17. Pearl River Market

If you are looking for great places to shop in NYC on a budget and love all kinds of quirky decor items then Pearl River Market is the place for you. This is another gem that is located on Broadway so it is pretty accessible. Now unlike the vast majority of budget shops that I have suggested before, Pearl River Market does not sell clothing. It sells all kinds of things that you would need to set up your home.

So think in terms of lights and lanterns, paintings and wall art, kitchen tools and serving trays, pot holders and all kinds of other curiosities. I particularly love all their ceramic wear.

The best part is that they all come at an affordable price. It is also a great place to buy Asian treats if you are missing home or haven’t been able to head out on that epic Asian trip yet.

Address: 452 Broadway, New York, NY 10013, United States

Hours: Open everyday from 11am to 7pm

How To Get There: Take the bus to Broadway / Grand St and walk from there.

See, this place makes shopping at a thrift cool again since you can now build a stunning wardrobe in a stylish, sustainable, and affordable way as you shop for truly unique pieces. It is definitely one of the best thrift stores in Brooklyn.

It’s also a family-owned business. Therefore, you can feel super good about supporting independent businesses up in NYC.

Plus, they have savvy buyers shopping like champs all across the USA. So, you’ll find nothing but the highest quality merchandise here.

That being said, don’t; expect products from high-end designers here. However, you can probably snag a sweet jacket from the GAP for less than $5.00.

20. Primark

Harry Potter-inspired interior of Primark,, one of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget.

This titan of discount shopping in the UK has finally made its way across the pond to good old NYC, where the company now has stores in both Brooklyn and Staten Island.

It’s nothing fancy but is basically just a giant department store that sells a wide variety of really cheap clothing, homes goods, accessories, beauty products, shoes, and more.

And that quality isn’t bad either. I mean, I got a pair of boots from Primark for $5.00 and they have lasted well over 2 years (with daily use I might add).

So, expect lots of on-trend items at deeply discounted prices. Also, be sure to use one of more than 41 different fitting to see how items look before you purchase them.

Address: There is one location in King’s Plaza Shopping Center (Brooklyn) and one in the Staten Island Mall (Duh, in Staten Island).

How to Get There: To get to the Brooklyn location, you can take either the 2 or Q subway lines.

21. Crossroads Trading Company

Do you feel like you’re at a budget shopping CROSSROADS in your life (sorry, I HAD to go for the lame pun)?

If so then you may want to hit up Crossroads Trading Company, an iconic US thrift store that was first started in California and that now has two locations in NYC.

So, even though this is a spot for the best shopping in NYC that isn’t unique to the city, it’s still worth stopping by since they carry a ton of chic clothes.

Therefore, you very much won’t have to sift through bins of heinous clothes here.

Because while they do receive pre-owned merch, their standards are super high. As a result, everything for sale here is very much stylish and in mint condition.

So, if you want a snazzy pair of YSL sneaks for $55.00 – or a quilted Chanel handbag for $800.00 – then THIS is the place to be.

Although, generally speaking, most items will probably be priced somewhere between $5.00 and $50.00.

Address: North 7th Street (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

How to Get There: Take the G train to the Bedford Avenue station and walk from there.

22. 10 ft. Single By Stella Dallas

Calling all lovers of fine vintage threads because 10 ft. Single By Stella Dallas is easily one of the best stores in NYC for you.

After all, it’s located in the fabulous neighbrohood of Williamsburg and hides a gorgeous, incredibly enormous selection of vintage clothes behind a pretty modest exterior.

So, give yourself plenty of time to look through the racks here and sift through a wealth of items dating back to the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

And while you will have to do some digging, it’s worth it – particularly if you head to the backroom and enjoy a ton of awesome vintage military apparel, letterman jackets, and more.

Yes, prices in the back room are a bit high but that makes sense since these pieces are one of a kind.

Pro Tip: Everything here gets progressively more expensive as you move towards the back of the store.

Address: 285 North 6th Street

Hours: Open daily from 12:00 pm to 7:17 pm.

How to Get There: You can either take the G train to Metropolitan Avenue Station or the L train to the Lorimer Street Station.

If you want funky vintage gear in Williamsburg, then meet your new best friend…Monk Vintage.

Yeah, it’s a super colorful, wonderfully quirky spot that sells tons of slightly used shoes, dresses, and accessories for both men and women – all of which are available in ultra-fun colors.

However, the shelves here are packed to maximum capacity so you will have to sift through some items.

Honestly though, it’s worth since past customers have found Chanel flats for $125 and Alica + Olive dresses for $125 too.

Address: 496 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Hours : Open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm and Friday/Saturday from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm.

As a result, they carry pretty much anything and everything you could ever want including furniture, dishware, art, and accessories.

However, to avoid sifting through not-so-hot stuff, go straight to the “new arrivals” section since all of the best stuff goes there as soon as it is available for purchase.

Embarking on a candy adventure in New York City is not just about satisfying your sweet tooth; it’s about immersing yourself in a world of flavors, colors, and stories. As an experienced travel journalist, I’ve explored the nooks and crannies of NYC’s candy scene and gathered valuable insights to help you maximize your candy store visits. Here’s how you can turn a simple candy hunt into an unforgettable journey.

Crafting the Perfect Candy Route

Planning your route is crucial to experiencing the diverse candy landscape of New York City. The city is home to a plethora of candy stores, each with its unique charm. To get the most out of your adventure, mix classic, must-visit stores like Economy Candy and Dylan’s Candy Bar with lesser-known gems. This approach allows you to experience the iconic spots that have defined NYC’s candy culture while also discovering new flavors and stories at smaller, local shops. Consider the neighborhoods you’ll be exploring and how each store fits into your day’s itinerary, ensuring a smooth and sweet journey through the city.

Engaging with Locals for Authentic Recommendations

One of the best ways to uncover hidden candy treasures is by tapping into local knowledge. New Yorkers are known for their pride in the city’s offerings, and they can provide personal recommendations that might not be found in guidebooks. Strike up a conversation with locals, be it a barista at a coffee shop or someone at a nearby park, and ask them about their favorite candy stores . These interactions not only lead you to unique spots but also enrich your adventure with personal connections and stories.

Hunting for Unique NYC-Themed Candies

New York City is not just a place; it’s an experience, and what better way to commemorate your visit than by picking up some NYC-themed candies? Many stores offer special treats that capture the essence of the city, from Statue of Liberty-shaped chocolates to Big Apple-flavored gummies. These make for perfect souvenirs or gifts, allowing you to take a piece of New York sweetness back home. Keep an eye out for these special items as they often reflect the creativity and spirit of the city.

Embracing the Stories Behind Each Store

Your candy adventure in NYC is not merely about the confections; it’s about the stories and experiences each store offers. Every candy shop in New York has a history, be it a family legacy, a cultural significance, or a unique approach to candy making. Take the time to learn about these stories, whether through conversations with store owners or reading about the shop’s history. This deeper understanding enriches your experience, turning each visit into more than just a transaction but a meaningful exploration of New York’s cultural tapestry.

Savoring the Experience Beyond the Candy

Finally, remember that your candy adventure is about the overall experience. It’s about the sights, sounds, and smells of each store, the bustling streets of New York, and the joy of discovery. Take your time to savor each moment, whether it’s the excitement of finding a rare candy , the pleasure of tasting a new flavor, or the simple delight of stepping into a beautifully decorated shop. Your candy adventure in New York City is a journey through a world of sweetness, a celebration of the senses, and a memorable part of your travel story.

Steffen Kneist Loving New York

Why Is It So Hard to Find Local Fish (Even by the Water)?

Seafood caught in nearby waters has long been left out of the farm-to-table movement. But these people have set out to get it into stores and restaurants.

Melissa Clark, a columnist for the Food section, has reported extensively on the environmental impact of seafood. She reported from Montauk, N.Y.

  • Published April 23, 2024 Updated April 25, 2024

On a cold, windy February morning on Shinnecock Bay, on the South Fork of Long Island, N.Y., Ricky Sea Smoke fished for clams from the back of his 24-foot boat. The fisherman, whose real name is Rick Stevens, expertly sorted through haul after haul as they were dumped onto the sorting rack.

Among the usual littlenecks and cherrystones were delicacies that would make chefs swoon: sweet, plump razor clams; vermilion-fleshed blood clams; and dainty limpets (also known as slipper snails) with their inimitable saline, buttery flavor. Depending on the season, fishers like Mr. Stevens can bring in even more treasures, like scallops, squid, blue crabs, striped bass, mackerel and skate.

But almost none of them are available locally.

Recipe: Creamy Fish With Mushrooms and Bacon

An overhead image of a white plate topped with fish, mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon. Two slices of bread are just to the top of the dish.

Instead, at restaurants in nearby East Hampton, you’ll find pasta topped with Manila clams from the West Coast and shrimp cocktail with red shrimp from Argentina. At fish counters across Long Island, imported salmon fillets glisten in greater profusion than local mackerel and black sea bass.

Just a year ago, Mr. Stevens would have thrown those pristine blood clams and limpets into the sea. “No one wanted them,” he said.

The more popular parts of this catch (littlenecks, cherrystones, black sea bass) would be trucked to dealers at the Hunts Point wholesale market in the Bronx, then sent for processing (often overseas) and sold all over the world. Maybe — a week or more later — an even smaller portion, far less fresh, could make its way back to Long Island stores and restaurants. (Or so one hopes. What’s labeled Long Island seafood might come from any number of places. Seafood from big dealers like the ones at Hunts Point is notoriously hard to trace.)

This startlingly inefficient path seems as if it should be an aberration, but it’s standard in the United States, where seafood is routinely trucked hundreds of miles to centralized dealers, changing hands four or five times before ending up at a local fish counter or restaurant, in far worse shape for the commute.

But late last year, Mr. Stevens found a workaround by sending his clams to Dock to Dish , one of a growing number of small businesses across the country — including restaurant suppliers, shops, farmers’ markets and community-supported fisheries — that are dedicated to helping fishing communities sell their catch directly to local markets.

For chefs and home cooks, this means that finding truly fresh, local wild seafood is getting a little easier — at least for anyone willing to wade past the deluge of imported farmed salmon to find it.

Dock to Dish is committed to buying whatever seafood fishing boats bring in, limpets and all, then selling it directly to nearby customers, often within 24 to 48 hours. Chefs at New York City restaurants, including ILIS , M. Wells and Houseman , get to offer local specialties like exceptionally fresh royal red shrimp and blood clams.

“We want to wage war on branzino and Chilean sea bass,” said K.C. Boyle, who owns Dock to Dish with seven fishing families from Montauk. “We have fluke and black sea bass,” he said, “which are infinitely better and more sustainable.”

Shoppers at fish markets like Mermaid’s Garden in Brooklyn can buy sustainable, easy-to-cook fillets like hake and golden tilefish. And by cutting out the middlemen, fishers get more money — an average of about 20 percent more — for their catch, which supports their community.

“Every year, we lose more fishing families because of economics,” Mr. Boyle said. “The kids feel like they have to leave because they can’t make a living.”

Some 65 percent to 80 percent of the seafood consumed in the United States is imported, while the country exports much of its seafood (worth about $5 billion in 2023 ), said Joshua Stoll , an associate professor of marine policy at the University of Maine and a founder of the Local Catch Network . Sending seafood overseas shifts a significant portion of profits away from fishing communities that desperately need it.

All this means that the supply chains needed to support local seafood have been long neglected. But there are people working to rebuild them. And because of their work, finding local seafood is getting easier. The website Local Catch Network , which supports community-based seafood systems, allows consumers to search for local sources. And even some large retailers like Whole Foods Market have started programs in coastal areas, where they buy a portion of their seafood directly from fishing boats without going through middle men.

In New Orleans, Porgy’s Seafood Market buys all its seafood — to sell at its retail counter and serve at an adjacent restaurant — from local fishing boats. In a city surrounded by water, Porgy’s is one of the only shops devoted to buying direct from local fishers.

Porgy’s commitment to local catch is inherent in its very name. Although porgies are plentiful and sweetly flavored, they are small and hard to fillet, so most fishing boats consider them unmarketable.

“There’s a lot of great fish that are underutilized because customers aren’t familiar with them, like blackfin tuna and rainbow runners,” said Dana Honn, a founder of Porgy’s. “But the fishers know we’ll take whatever they have.”

For those who are leery about unfamiliar fish, the restaurant’s deep-fryer comes in handy, said Marcus Jacobs, a co-owner. “People will try anything on a po’ boy,” he said.

Yet while that may work for restaurants, getting home cooks to try something new is another thing entirely.

At Mermaid’s Garden , which gets its seafood from small-boat, domestic fisheries, persuading customers to choose lesser-known species, like pompano and porgies, is a daily challenge, said Bianca Piccillo, who owns the shop in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, with her husband, Mark Usewicz.

“People are already terrified to cook fish at home, so they don’t want to deviate from the recipe,” Mr. Usewicz said.

After being in business for a decade, the couple have educated their customers, shifting them away, for example, from farmed salmon (which they don’t even carry) to locally farmed steelhead trout, a more sustainable substitute.

“It would be so much easier just to sell farmed salmon, and we’d be financially rewarded for it,” Ms. Piccillo said. “But I wouldn’t eat it, and I’m not going to sell something I wouldn’t eat.”

Finding reliable sources took Ms. Piccillo and Mr. Usewicz several years, and it can be even harder for a restaurant just starting out, even one as on-trend as Place des Fêtes in nearby Clinton Hill.

“We didn’t want to be dependent on the distributors, so spent a lot of time banging our heads against the wall, asking people where to get stuff,” said the chef and co-owner Nico Russell.

Because of its small size and flexible menu, the restaurant can hand-sell supremely fresh seafood that’s delicious but traditionally overlooked, such as mackerel and skate.

Like many high-end New York restaurants, Place des Fêtes gets much of its fish from small dealers who work outside the usual system, like Sue Buxton of Day Boat Fresh in Stonington, Maine.

Ms. Buxton has been supplying chefs like Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Thomas Keller for more than 25 years, buying peekytoe crab, scallops and lobsters directly from local fishing boats, and shipping it to restaurants overnight. For decades, Day Boat Fresh was one of only a handful of options for chefs around the country who wanted this kind of rarefied seafood. But, working largely alone, Ms. Buxton could supply only a few dozen chefs, and even they had to know someone to get on her list. Home cooks looking for the same quality had nowhere to turn.

Much has changed since then. Ms. Buxton recently expanded by starting Buxton Boats Home Edition , which sells directly to the public.

Togue Brawn, who also sells fresh Maine seafood direct to consumers through two companies, Dayboat Blue and Downeast Dayboat , likens the increasing demand to the growth of farm-to-table movement.

Thirty years ago, you had to ask a lot of questions if you wanted to know where your vegetables came from, she said. Now, menus regularly list farm partners.

Ms. Brawn is following the same playbook with her scallops, labeling catches with their points of origin so her customers can learn about their merroir (the ocean analogue to terroir).

Empowered by this information, increasingly knowledgeable seafood lovers are helping to create change in the system.

“Chefs know their farms but not their fishermen,” Ms. Brawn said. “Seafood is finally starting to catch up.”

To recharge the device itself, it has its own USB cable to charge it up when you need to get it ready for the next use. The $80 Wireless Magnetic ChargeCard , the original version of which debuted on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” comes in three colors and can fit easily into your pocket. There is also a built-in phone grip so that it doesn’t fall off easily. It is powerful enough to give your phone between a 30%- 100% emergency boost anywhere you are.

SparkBox surprise mystery gift boxes

The Joy gift box retails for $60 each.

These small mystery gift boxes are curated based on personal mood or preferences. In each one is something to spark a new curiosity or hobby as well as find a way to “declutter” the mind and unwind. They have an artistic focus so that after opening and using the contents, there is a special keepsake to enjoy. This is a great gift for Moms to take on the road with them or to enjoy back at home with their kids or partner. SparkBox comes as a one-time ($25) gift or as a subscription (just over $22 per box with the ability to control the frequency and timing of it) where the anticipation of what is going to arrive next is part of the gift itself. Other themed boxes are more expensive, but include more products for hobbies or entertaining.

FlatPak Toiletry Bottle

This is an excellent solution to the frustrating TSA restriction on carrying a limited number of ... [+] liquids.

Stuffing TSA-friendly liquid bottles into a small plastic bag does is like a game of Tetris, and it can limit the number of toiletries people take when traveling with a carry-on bag. Matador has a solution to that problem with the TSA-approved FlatPak Toiletry Bottle that lays flat while holding 3oz of liquid each. They come in different colors and are made with a flex fabric that can easily be refilled. They are more lightweight than a plastic bottle. Plus, being malleable and flat, traveling moms can stuff more toiletries into the plastic bag without wasting space inside of it. The bottles are BPA and PVC-free; a pack of three costs $38. What a brilliant solution to a frustrating problem!

There are over 700 designer or niche fragrance brands for each type of scent profile available for a monthly fragrance supply. Some of the latest are Icelandic Andrea Maack JEST (fruity notes of plum and apple with back notes of chocolate, rum and vanilla and Juliette Has A Gun with scents of dark cherry, pink pepper and jasmine.
