best wine trip california

Large swaths of beautiful California countryside are dedicated to the production of wine, with boutique and big-name wineries alike producing some of the most famous varietals in the world. After all, Napa Valley wines are up there with Burgundy and Bordeaux in terms of clout.

Idyllic vineyard visits are a lovely part of the California experience, but they're not without their behind-the-scenes stressors: There's the Google mapping, the hours-checking, and of course, the driving or arranging of transportation. Plus, there are literally thousands of California wineries and vineyards to choose from — 3,600 by one count. Even after narrowing it down to a certain region, you're looking at dozens (if not hundreds) of prospective properties.

There is an easier way. Guided wine tours take the legwork and logistics out of the trip. All you have to do is admire the rolling scenery and sip delicious wines at each stop. Maybe take a note or two, if you're so inspired, and doze off as your driver gets you home safely.

The best California wine tours can be geared toward anyone, from total newbies and nightly sippers, to pinot lovers hoping to discover more great reds and couples looking to relive a trip to Provence. They're intimate affairs that favor luxury vehicles and small vans to 50-person buses. The following California wine tours have earned high praise for their tailor-made itineraries and unfailingly kind, informative — and sober — guides and chauffeurs.

Painted Ladies Wine Country Tour

Painted Ladies Tour Company is beloved for their San Francisco city tours tootling around in a (very on-theme) vintage VW bus. The family-run operation also spins their retro wheels through legendary Sonoma Valley on small-group tours to up-and-coming wine producers. Past guests rave about the friendly guides, great road-trip vibe, and the thoughtfully selected lineup that includes an Italian winery for lunch. And don't worry — you'll get a Golden Gate Bridge photo op.

Toast Tours

If your group has some beer and whiskey fans in the mix, this Paso Robles company is an excellent choice. Groups aboard Toast's 12-person shuttle buses can visit distilleries, micro-breweries, and even a cidery, as well as local wineries. ( Tablas Creek Vineyard is a favorite for its organic Rhone-inspired wines and herd of cute alpacas.) Other tours can combine wine country with two classic California sites: Hearst Castle and Pismo Beach.

Edge of the World Tours

This local favorite does tours around San Francisco and Sonoma Wine Country. They visit both boutique and commercial wineries, highlighting local flavors and generous pours. Take the nine-hour Great Wine Tour with up to 13 other people in a van that takes you to three different wineries, lunch in historic Sonoma village, through scenic Sausalito, and to a photo stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. Or, create your own bespoke tour like a walk through the Giant Sequoias followed by a wine tasting in the Sierra foothills.

Bin 415 Private Tours

Something that sets Bin 415 apart is the fact that its guides are certified sommeliers, so they really, really know their stuff. The SF-based tour group organizes private, totally custom wine trips (via Mercedes SUVs, no less) exploring Sonoma and Napa's celebrated varietals. Guides and the vintners themselves illustrate everything from harvesting grapes to bottling. Lunch is a highlight, with past stops including French country cooking (at The Girl & the Fig in Sonoma) and farm-to-table New American (at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena). For those looking to splurge, Bin 415 will try to snag coveted French Laundry reservations.

Squire Livery Tours

While some winery tours embrace the flash factor — Segways! limo vans! party buses! — the three-person team at Squire Livery Tours keeps things sweet and simple with a two-car fleet and a hosting style that's nothing short of a delight. Run by the knowledgeable Kent Higginbotham, a true Napa/Sonoma connoisseur who's lived in the valley most of his life, Squire lets you be as hands-on or -off as you'd like — let them know what you'd like to try (you could, for example, mention that you're a sucker for riesling or want to learn more about cabernet sauvignon) or simply leave everything to the guides. When possible, they'll arrange for private tastings at times when the estate is closed to the public, something vintners often do for VIPs and industry insiders. Past guests regularly gush about Squire guides' expertise and genuine warmth, and report never feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Baja California Wine Tours

If you're visiting San Diego, consider swapping the craft breweries of North Park and Ocean Beach for the highland vineyards of northwest Mexico. With San Diego as its starting point, Baja California Wine Tours leads day trips or even overnights to the famous Valle de Guadalupe, where the altitude, soil, and Mediterranean-like climate grow everything from chardonnay to malbec. Spectacular mountain scenery is a given, and tours can include stops at a 19th-century horse ranch, the studio whose water tanks were used to film Titanic and Deep Blue Sea , and laid-back Mexican beach towns like Ensenada and Rosarito for fresh ceviche and horseback-riding on the sand.

Food & Farm Tours

A day dedicated to wine, cheese, and baby goats? Irresistible. Food & Farm Tours celebrates Northern California's glorious food scene with tours to artisanal food producers and organic farms in Marin and Sonoma counties. The most popular circuit goes to Hog Island Oyster Farm , Cowgirl Creamery , and Brickmaiden Breads , but tailored tours can include sampling crave-worthy sparkling honey wine at Heidrun Meadery or certified organic whites and reds at McEvoy Ranch .

Sustainable Wine Tours

Sustainable Wine Tours specializes in day trips exploring Santa Ynez Valley, one of the five viticultural areas in Santa Barbara wine country. At the helm of Tesla SUVs or Mercedes Sprinters, tour guides bring small parties to a handful of the region's friendly, family-owned wine operations for private tastings. While sampling bottles and charcuterie boards, guests learn about the winemaking process — from picking fruits to fermenting — from estate owners and winemakers.

Noble Wine Tours

Even if you consider yourself somewhat of a wine expert, trying to nail down which of Napa and Sonoma's hundreds (and hundreds ) of wineries to visit is daunting. Noble Wine's Austin Smith takes research out of the equation with his bespoke itineraries based on guest likes, preferences, and interests. Have a thing for pét-nat? Want to visit the winery that put Napa on the map after famously dethroning noble French wines in a blind-tasting competition? (Wine rookies without a clue where to begin are in great hands, too.) Nearly everyone who's vineyard-hopped with Noble praises Smith for his courteousness, professionalism, and insane knowledge on all things California wine. He also doubles as a photographer, keeping a pro camera on hand to help capture the day.

The company's "Women in Wine Country" tour focuses on woman-led wineries, with stops at Fantesca Estate & Winery , St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery (owner Elaine St. Clair is the only female commercial winemaker and brewer in the United States), and the ultra-friendly Crocker & Starr in St. Helena, where co-owner Pam Starr and winemaker Evyn Cameron produce superlative, sustainable wines, including well-loved cabernet francs and sauvignon blancs.

Spend the day riding through the gorgeous landscape in a luxury vehicle like a BMW convertible, limo bus, or executive coach with a private guide. They also do open tours that still feel special as Green Dream keeps the groups small and puts a lot of attention into curating the selection of boutique wineries you’ll visit. The Combo Tour of Napa and Sonoma is one of the most popular options — all tasting fees are included and you’ll make a stop at Oxbow Public Market for lunch.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Pair a glass of sparkling wine with the classic glamour of train travel on the Napa Valley Wine Train . This popular tour, which runs on a rail line originally built in 1864, travels three hours from Downtown Napa to St. Helena and back. In addition to sipping varietals from Napa vineyards like Castello Di Amorosa and Sequoia Grove and enjoying picturesque wine country views, tours include winery visits and multi-course gourmet meals of dishes like yellowfin tuna tartare or pan-seared Pacific halibut. California’s Best Wine Regions: Where to Stay and What to Drink

Whether you’re in world famous sonoma or a lesser-known central coast spot, there’s a vineyard and a glass of something good for you..

California vineyard

California boasts 100+ viticultural areas and numerous tasting rooms.

California’s coastal proximity to the Pacific Ocean and fruitful soil create some of the best wines in the world. And many of the state’s regions are complemented by scenic drives, where a beach town shaded by precipitous cliffs and shining palm trees sits a few minutes away from acres of farmland and thriving vineyards. California has well over 100 specific vineyard zones based on geography and climate—called American Viticultural Areas (or AVAs)—and four wine-producing regions: the North Coast, Central Coast, Central Valley, and South Coast. Subregions within these locations include Napa and Sonoma in the north.

Wine lovers can make tasting appointments at some of the top wine estates in the north and enjoy family-owned boutiques in the Central Coast. Whether you’re returning to the state for another taste of its terroir, or looking to plan your first trip and don’t know where to begin, here are some excellent California wine regions to consider.

Anderson Valley

Located on California’s northern coast, this region in Mendocino County produces some of the state’s best sparkling wine and pinot noirs—and boasts of some of the largest number of certified organic and biodynamic wines in the entire state.

In the northwest, a thick fog that rolls in from the Mendocino coastline helps create the perfect climate for Maggy Hawk Vineyard ’s pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2022, the winery opened a tasting room in the town of Philo where appointments can be made to join experiences like pinot and pizza pairings. Pennyroyal Farms offers tastings of its house-made cheeses and wines as well as farm tours that include a walk through its solar-powered barn full of animals. Try its popular Pinotrio, a dry blend of pinot gris, pinot noir, and pinot blanc. For a bit of bubbly, Roederer Estate was one of the first sparkling wine producers in the region. If you’re feeling decadent, request the Nosh menu, which features Tsar Nicoulai caviar, smoked salmon, duck rillettes, and Marcona almonds.

Sonoma County

Slightly less overwhelming than its booming next door neighbor Napa, Sonoma County maintains a come-as-you-are charm that’s rare to find in such a frequented wine region.

Just outside of the city of Healdsburg, a celebration of coveted, juicy red French varietals that helped define California-Bordelaise winemaking takes center stage at Vérité . Here, Pierre Seillan—along with his daughter Hélène—crafts three principal Bordeaux blends (La Muse, La Joie, and Le Désir) from small, individually picked plots called “micro-crus.” In April, Vérité completed a multiphase project on the estate that includes a tasting salon, underground cave, and multiple tasting spaces with views toward rolling hills and vineyards. If a luxury experience with unforgettable wines is your aim, make a tasting room appointment in advance.

Another favorite winery of mine is Three Sticks , located in downtown Sonoma. The boutique, family-owned winery focuses on small-lot pinot noir and chardonnay wines, and its new spring releases—the 2021 Durell Vineyard Origin chardonnay and 2021 Monarch pinot noir—are a great way to get an overview of what it does. Finally, head to Aperture Cellars to taste notes of baked plum and cherries in winemaker Jesse Katz’s cool-climate Bordeaux varietals.

Where to stay

Book now: Montage Healdsburg

After a tasting filled day, check in to the nearby bungalow-style Montage Healdsburg, set among moss-covered oak trees on rolling hills. At its signature farm-to-table restaurant Hazel Hill, French-influenced California dishes like a wagyu strip loin with duck fat potatoes are paired with its robust collection of wines.

Paso Robles

California’s Central Coast has no shortage of wineries; San Luis Obispo County has more than 250 vineyards alone to choose from, many of which are family owned. In the Paso Robles region, popular varietals include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, syrah, and chardonnay, and its coastal proximity allows for excellent cool climate friendly viogniers and pinot noirs.

The streets of the city itself are lined with tasting opportunities, including standouts like Copia , Indigené and Détente . For a venture through vines, make your way to L’Aventure , where winemaker Stephan Asseo grows Rhone-style syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot blends to create Optimus and the Estate Cuvée. My favorite is the 2019 Côte à Côte–a blend of grenache, syrah, and a mourvèdre to balance out what becomes a symphony of blue fruits and spring flowers on the palate.

At the family-owned Clos Solène , French grapes take their cue once again from the Central Coast’s terroir. The Fleur de Solène—a red blend of syrah, cabernet franc, grenache—is fresh and drinkable now. For places to eat with impressive wine selections as well, make a reservation at French farm-to-table bistro Les Petites Canailles and order a bowl of mussels with spicy nduja and roasted garlic, or go to the always buzzing In Bloom for contemporary California cuisine. In eastern Paso Robles, Cass offer wines that reflect the cool breezes channeled by nearby river terraces, including its bouquet fresh marsanne.

Santa Barbara

Often called the American Riviera because of its small city, laid-back feel and Mediterranean climate, Santa Barbara has six regions with AVA status. Mediterranean-style homes tower above a bustling downtown area with some of the state’s best vineyards less than an hour away.

Downtown’s top tasting rooms include Jaffurs , where talented winemaker Stephen Searle makes Rhône varietal wines, including a medium-bodied syrah with notes of cardamom and blackberry sauce. Though not a tasting room, the Lark restaurant is one of the best places to experience some of Santa Barbara’s wines by the glass or bottle, in an alfresco setting and paired with flavorful buttermilk fried chicken thighs and handmade pappardelle with garlic butter beurre blanc. Next door, the Santa Barbara Wine Collective offers winetasting flights from well-loved Santa Barbara region producers like Fess Parker , Notary Public, and Babcock . Just down the street, La Paloma Cafe is well-known for its Baja inspired food and mezcal margaritas, but it’s the wine list—featuring the likes of Casa Madero’s zippy rose and Marcio Lopes Pequenos Rebento’s juicy and acidic pét-nat—that round out an afternoon on their patio for brunch.

Book now: Drift

Check into the new 45-room Drift hotel—where Santa Barbara’s modern coastal decor is on full display. On the lobby floor, Dusk cocktail bar is a favorite for residents looking to enjoy a spicy mezcal cocktail and small plates like avocado tostada.

Los Olivos in Santa Ynez

Just 45 minutes north of downtown Santa Barbara, Los Olivos in Santa Ynez Valley offers a city escape and small town feel with vineyards at every turn. There are over 30 tasting rooms clustered in the downtown area—many family owned. Be sure to make stops at Future Perfect for small-lot sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, and syrah and nearby Story of Soil , where winemaker Jessica Gasca pours her incredibly refreshing pinot noir.

One of the best expressions of Los Olivos’s terroir is available at the Brewer-Clifton Tasting Room , where winemaker Greg Brewer produces chardonnay and pinot noirs that showcase the complexity of the region’s marine-based soils. At the wine-heavy seafood tavern Bar Le Cote , chef Brad Matthews works closely with local winemakers and farmers to create fresh dishes like scallop crudo with pickled black pearl mushrooms, producing one of the most sought-after dining experiences in the region.

Book now: Fess Parker Wine Country Inn

Fess Parker recently renovated its beloved Fess Parker Wine Country Inn with 19 contemporary rooms and suites that are just steps away from all of downtown’s tasting rooms. Also new to the block is their Epiphany Tasting Garden , which features a shaded garden area to sample their popular varietals like a carbonic grenache and apricot tinged roussanne.

Santa Maria Valley

A bit cooler in temperature than its neighbor Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley produces zippy chardonnay and pinot noirs that reflect the climate. This Santa Barbara County AVA has over 7,000 acres of vineyards and hiking opportunities and was commemorated in the film Sideways . At the family-owned Cambria Estate, sisters Katherine and Julia produce single vineyard expressions on the coastal ridges of the Valley, including chardonnay and pinot noir. The Foxen Canyon Wine Trail is home to 14 tasting rooms, with standouts that include Tres Hermanas and Rancho Sisquoc .

Book now: Skyview

Skyview in Los Alamos is a 33-room roadside motel turned boutique hotel, just steps away from appealling dining options like French-inspired bistro Bell’s and farm-to-table Pico .

A California Wine Road Trip: 10 Wineries to Try

California Wine Country

California conjures up a different image for everyone. It might be the bright sun illuminating the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or Los Angeles’ famous Walk of Fame as crowds of tourists seek out their favorite stars’ names. Adam and I shared a vision: to us, California was seeing the waves of the Pacific Ocean crash along the coast and sipping wine among some of the most picturesque vineyards in the United States. We brought our vision to life when we planned a California wine road trip: in addition to driving along the state’s famous Highway 1, we picked ten wineries to try in four different regions over four days. Sure, Napa may reign as the quintessential spot to enjoy a glass of wine, but grapes grow throughout the state—and we had big plans to learn and try as much as possible.

California Wine Road Trip: San Diego Wine Region

Our California wine road trip started in San Diego , which ended up being surprisingly apropos because San Diego is likely the birthplace of California wine. There are conflicting accounts as to where grapes were first planted in the state, but it is widely believed that the first record of a sustained planting was in San Diego in the 1770s, when the Franciscans produced wine in their missions. Today, there are dozens of wineries in San Diego County, and merlot and chardonnay grow well in the Mediterranean-style climate.

► San Pasqual Winery

The first California winery we visited was, in part, for a celebration. I had a chance to speak at the Association for Talent Development’s International Conference and Exposition, and a few hours after my session on storytelling and instructional design I met Adam and a few friends and former co-workers at San Pasqual Winery. San Pasqual’s main winery and tasting room is 10 miles east of San Diego in La Mesa, but we gathered at their Seaport Village tasting room that overlooks the San Diego Bay.

California Wine Road Trip: Central Coast

California’s beautiful central coast is home to hundreds of wineries that represent an incredible diversity in varietals and styles. Geography is key in this part of the state; the Transverse mountain ranges produce micro-climates that, in turn, create optimal growing conditions for many different types of grapes. That makes this part of the state ideal for trying California wine—and it’s a great region to include on a California wine road trip!

► Sanford Winery

That scene was filmed at Sanford, which looks a bit different these days thanks to some remodeling, but it doesn’t take long to understand why wine lovers will appreciate what they have to offer. Sanford is home to the oldest vineyards in the county, and the wines offered represent decades of tradition and quality.

Sanford offers two tastings—a classic flight and a reserve flight—and we ordered both so we could try a little of everything. I was particularly impressed by the Pinot Blanc, the Fleur Du Domaine, and the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir. The Pinot Blanc was bright, floral, and had a touch of sweetness on the nose. The Fleur Du Domaine was one of the most complex white wines we have tried; crisp, acidic, and bursting with the flavor of summer peaches, it’s a really interesting wine. Sanford makes a few different Pinot Noirs—each of them very good—but our favorite was the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir. It was really well balanced, just a little peppery to me, and full of red fruits. We loved our visit; we pulled into the driveway of the Lompoc location just as they opened, and we were treated to a lovely, relaxing tasting that made it difficult to leave.

► Fess Parker Winery

Fess Parker Vineyards

Of the wines we tried, it was Marcella’s—a white blend—that stood out to me. I’m a huge fan of blends, and this one is primarily Grenache Blanc and Viognier with Roussanne and Marsanne. I thought it was clean, almost bold for a white, with big apricot and apple flavors and a bit of an unexpected peppery finish. I hadn’t tried a white wine like it before, and we brought a bottle home to enjoy during the summer. The Big Easy was another winner. It’s a red blend, this time Syrah, Petite Syrah, and Grenache, with lots of red fruits like cherries and blackberries with some blueberry and vanilla on the finish.

► Broken Earth Winery

Broken Earth Winery

We decided to enjoy the wine and cheese pairing, which was a great deal at 10 USD for six wines and six cheeses. There wasn’t a single pairing we didn’t love; from the crisp Albariño paired with salty goat Gouda to the fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon paired with nutty Gruyere, every sip and every bite left us wishing we could have that experience every day. The Reserve Merlot paired with truffle gouda was my favorite of the day, although the Chardonnay paired with blue cheese was a close second. Pairings change regularly, but it’s worth it to upgrade to a food pairing during your visit (and a wine and chocolate pairing is available as well!). We stayed much longer than expected because we had so much fun chatting with the staff, who were well-versed in wine and cheese and had lots of fun stories to share.

► Pessagno Winery

Toward the northern portion of California’s central coast, we stopped in for a tasting at Pessagno Winery. Pessagno made our list primarily due to its location in the Salinas Valley, a part of the world I have always loved in part due to John Steinbeck and his masterpiece East of Eden, which was set there. The winery represents a twenty-year history of winemaking.

For 15 USD, Pessagno offers a tasting of five wines from the twenty they list on their menu. Adam and I were quick to select 10 and agree to share all of them. The stand out wines were the blends: Due, Tre, and Quattro were all excellent, although Tre was my favorite. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tannat, the wine is smooth and spicy with lots of vanilla tones. Adam was partial to the Pinot Noirs, and I also enjoyed the Intrinity Chardonnay with its oaky, tropical finish. We arrived close to the end of the day, yet the winery was busy and almost every seat at the bar was taken. Once we sat down we weren’t rushed, and the staff was great with recommendations and ensuring our glasses were never empty.

California Wine Road Trip: Napa Valley

A California wine road trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop or two—or even a day—in the Napa Valley. California wine is often synonymous with Napa; many of California’s most famous wine brands are based in Napa, and it’s an incredibly popular spot for wine tourism. In some ways you can’t go wrong; our drive along St. Helena Highway through Rutherford and Calistoga took us by dozens of wineries. From world-class vintages to picturesque locations, Napa is a great wine destination.

► Castello di Amorosa – the Castle Winery

Castello di Amorosa - aka the Castle Winery

Castello di Amorosa offers several different options for visitors, from a basic tasting to a combined tour, tasting, and food pairing experience. We decided to enjoy only the basic tasting, which allowed us to select any five wines from a pretty extensive menu. Vincenzo, who greeted us when we walked into the tasting room, immediately took control of our experience, and we tried more than the five wines our admission provided. When he learned we like both red and white wines he carefully selected all of the wines he thought we should try—including a few that were not on the menu—and built a great, customized experience for us. The Sangiovese was oaky with lots of berry notes, and it was one of Adam’s favorite wines of the day. I really liked the Old Vine Zinfandel, which had notes of tobacco and berries and was well-balanced. We ended up purchasing the Il Brigante, a delightful wine that blended all of our favorites—Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfindel, and Sangiovese—into a practically perfect bottle.

► Silver Oak Cellars

Silver Oak Winery in Napa, California

Silver Oak offered three wines during our visit: the 2012 Napa Valley Cab, the 2012 Alexander Valley Cab, and the 2006 Alexander Valley Cab. All three were exceptional; fruit-forward, balanced, and nuanced. Greg provided us with three generous pours, and when the last drop of my 2006 Cab was gone he refilled my glass without a word. In addition to enjoying our time talking with the staff and a few other guests, we loved the tasting room and had a great time walking around after our tasting to explore the view outside.

Silver Oak has one of the more expensive tasting fees we saw, but for 30 USD we enjoyed three nice pours, a bonus pour, and got to bring home Silver Oak wine glasses for our collection. Considering I got to enjoy quite a bit of the 2006 Cab—a 225 USD bottle!—it seemed like a bargain. The experience was worth every cent.

California Wine Road Trip: Sierra Foothills

Just west of Napa—yet just far enough that it falls under many travelers’ radars—is Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada foothills, an impressive region that draws comparison to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Wineries started popping up in the 1850s during the Gold Rush that sent thousands of people to the area. Vines benefit from a warm climate with low humidity, and temperature fluctuations between daytime and nighttime help the grapes to retain a nice acidity, which leads to well-balanced wines. We visited Amador County with Adam’s aunt and uncle, who hand-selected some incredible wineries to round out our California wine road trip.

► Amador Cellars

Vineyards at Amador Cellars

For 5 USD visitors have the chance to sample six different wines, and we loved them all. The GSM Blend (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) was an instant favorite; it had notes of blueberry and lavender, and we were quick to decide we needed a bottle to bring home with us. We also enjoyed the Rocky Point Vineyard Zinfandel, with its big, bold fruit flavors and a softness that is hard to achieve in winemaking. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making sure we had a chance to revisit favorite wines, and we felt right at home during our visit.

More Information: AmadorCellars.com

► Helwig Winery

The Helwig family isn’t originally from California’s wine country, but you would never know it—their wines taste as if they benefit from generations of winemaking expertise. Started just about a decade ago by a family that relocated from the USA’s Midwest, Helwig hosts wine tastings, concerts, and other events throughout the year.

► Renwood Winery

Renwood Winery has a great tradition of winemaking in Amador County. For 25 years they have produced a variety of wines with an emphasis on Zinfandel, which grows well in the region. By the time we arrived to sample a few wines the tasting room was busy, but we still had a warm, welcoming experience from several fantastic people behind the bar- including our host Nicole.

Renwood offers several different flights, including one just for Zinfandel fans, but we both tried the Taste of Renwood flight to get a more well-rounded idea of what they produce. We sampled a Sauvignon Blanc, a Tempranillo, a Barbera, a Zinfandel, and a red blend. The Zinfandel really stood out to me; it had lots of blackberry and red fruit flavors, and it was easy to drink. The Sauvignon Blanc was also great, and on a hot day its bright crispness and citrus tones would be a refreshing choice. We loved our visit and wished we had time to relax outside, where dozens of people gathered at tables with a glass of their favorite wine after their tasting was complete.

Tips for Planning Your California Wine Road Trip

If you are thinking about planning your own California wine road trip, here are a few ideas to consider:

► Don’t overdo it

Amador Cellars

► Pick a designated driver

If possible, travel with a designated driver —either one person who doesn’t plan to drink during your trip or by alternating days with all passengers. Drinking and driving is illegal, and it is dangerous to you and everyone you encounter on the road. Make smart decisions and ensure someone is sober and ready to drive at all times.

► Take Breaks

If you don’t have a designated driver, incorporate breaks into your road trip schedule. Plan to spend time after your tasting enjoying the scenery or talking with staff before moving along to your next stop. A California wine road trip is different than a night of bar hopping; it’s not about the quantity of wineries you visit but rather the quality of each visit.

► Make responsible choices

If you are going to be driving the car during your California wine road trip, don’t drink and drive. That is the most responsible choice you can make. During our road trip we met people who shared a single tasting, sipped and then spit out wine so they didn’t ingest it, and skipped tastings completely if it was their turn to drive. Pick a responsible strategy; we strongly discourage any decisions that lead to drinking and driving.

► Pick your wineries in advance

There are hundreds of great wineries to explore, and your choices may overwhelm your experience if you don’t do some research before you get there! Some wineries focus on a single varietal, like Silver Oak, and some offer an extensive tasting menu. Doing your homework and selecting wineries in advance will help you maximize your time and your overall experience. Also, many wineries—especially in Napa—require reservations in advance, which may impact your itinerary and require some planning.

► Some wineries are expensive

Napa Valley's Castle Winery tasting room

► Pick your hotels strategically

Many hotels are expensive, especially during popular times of the year or on weekends, so book hotel rooms in advance and note their location based on the wineries you will visit. We had a fantastic stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Vacaville, CA, which was about an hour from both Amador County and Napa. The suites are enormous, so we had plenty of room to spread out, and we liked having a kitchen where we could eat a takeout pizza from Round Table Pizza (and a microwave to heat up leftovers!). We also loved the complimentary hot breakfast, and the staff was terrific—warm, welcoming, and full of suggestions for what to see and do while we were in the area.

8 of the best wineries to visit in California

author_avatar

Fancy a tipple? Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or a happy amateur, you’re sure to fall in love with Californian wine. People come from all over the world to visit the wineries of the Golden State and take wine tours from Napa Valley to Sonoma County and Santa Cruz. With literally hundreds of wineries across the state, narrowing it down can be a hard task. To help you get started, we’ve chosen 8 of the very best wineries in California where you can enjoy a glass (or several glasses) of your favourite vino.

GET INSPIRED BY: Coastal California and Big Sur

1. Parrish Vineyards

Set in the stunning Paso Robles wine region, this family-run vineyard’s history spans an incredible nine decades and four generations. Parrish Vineyards all started when the family’s grandfather planted 500 acres of grapes in the Atascadero during the pre-Prohibition era.

The family now produces wine on 150 acres across three estate vineyards and is run by owner and winemaker David Parish. He spent two decades designing and building vineyard trellising through California’s iconic wine regions, however, he fell in love with the Central Coast. Today, he lives in Paso Robles making Bordeaux varieties and Napa-style wines that love the limestone soils of the region.

Can’t wait to taste these fine wines? Join us on our California Coast Food and Wine Trail trip and you’ll get to visit this winery. You’ll even get to meet David and learn all about how he produces some of the best wines in the world.

2. Louis M. Martini Winery

Head to St. Helena, a city in Napa, the most famous wine region in California, and you’re guaranteed to find dozens of world-class vineyards. But where to start? The Louis M. Martini Winery is a strong bet as one of the best wineries in California, with a legendary history of wine-making spanning nine decades.

As one of the original wineries in Napa in the post-Prohibition era, Louis M. Martini Winery has made award-winning California red wine – Cabernet Sauvignon – since 1933. They source grapes from the best mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and you can taste these superb wines in the gorgeous spaces like Winemaker’s Table and the Heritage Lounge. Or soak up the California sunshine in the outdoors Martini Park where you’ll look over a stunning sycamore grove as you sip the good stuff. You can even tour the underground cellar to see old artefacts and learn how the Martini family played a role in shaping Napa Valley as an iconic wine region.

Trafalgar tip: If you’d like to sample the goods of Napa Valley and Sonoma County, join us on our Northern California trip where you visit the best local wineries and enjoy an unforgettable wine tasting over lunch.

3. Beringer Vineyard s

best wine trip california

While you’re in St. Helena, be sure to also stop by Beringer Vineyards , renowned as one of California’s oldest continually operating wineries. Its history began in 1868 when founder Jacob Beringer sailed from his home in Mainz, Germany to the United States , enticed by the opportunities of California’s fertile lands. Jacob and his brother Frederick purchased 215 acres of land in Napa Valley in 1875, next door to the equally iconic Charles Krug winery.

This land became the Beringer estate and has been the site of many firsts in the wine industry. Beringer was among the first to use hand-dug caves and cellars and was also the first to give public tours in 1934, starting the beloved tradition of Napa Valley wine tours. They are also the first and only winery to have both a red and white wine awarded the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator . And if that’s not enough, the estate’s 19th-century architecture and beautiful gardens are designated as an official Historic District, making this one of the best wineries in California.

4. Charles Krug Winery

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charles Krug Winery (@charleskrugwinery)

Head next door to Charles Krug Winery and you’ll find even more centuries-old Napa Valley wine history. Established in 1861by Prussian immigrant Charles Krug, this winery is considered to be the very first winery in the Napa Valley. In 1943, the famous Mondavi Family purchased Charles Krug Winery and have run this iconic estate for over 75 years and four generations.

It now spans over 500 pristine acres and has been producing award-winning wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style wines, for over 160 years. While you may be drinking red here, you’ll be seeing green as the vineyard is committed to sustainability. Their Napa Green-certified vineyards span 400 acres. You can also taste the wines in the gorgeous Redwood Cellar, a designated National Historic Landmark built in 1872. As you sip away, you can admire the family’s original wine tanks and incredible stone and beam construction.

5. Raymond Vineyards

best wine trip california

The history of this legendary family-owned vineyard goes back to 1933 when the pioneering Raymond family arrived in Napa Valley. They became connected to the esteemed Beringer family through marriage in 1936 and wine-making royalty was born. Roy Raymond worked as a winemaker for Beringer until 1970 when he and his two sons established their own 90-acre estate in Rutherford. After producing their first commercial wine in 1974, Raymond Vineyards shot to success with high-quality wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and more.

The winery has since transitioned to organic and biodynamic farming practices and has become a Napa Valley icon. They were even once named the most Instagram-friendly winery by San Francisco Magazine’s Best of Wine Country Awards. You can enjoy some unique wine-tasting experiences, like being a winemaker for a day. Learn the art of the winemaker, all while blending your own red wine. You can even take it home, complete with your own custom label. Now that’s a souvenir!

6. J Vineyards & Winery

best wine trip california

Set in the heart of Sonoma County to the north of Napa Valley, Healdsburg is another unmissable California wine region. And one of the greatest wineries to visit here is J Vineyards & Winery . Founded in 1986, the winery has been producing world-class wines for over 35 years. They still use many old-world techniques, like the rare Coquard press, one of very few in the US. So you know you’re sipping something very special.

The winery is famed for its portfolio of world-class sparkling wines, including Chardonnay blends and single-vineyard Pinot Noir. But what to try first? Their very first wine – the Vintage Brut sparkling – is arguably their best wine and is only available at the winery… So be sure to get your hands on it! If you’re lucky, you might also sample their highly-acclaimed 2018 Annapolis Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir.

7. MacRostie Winery and Vineyards

While you’re in the Healdsburg area, don’t miss MacRostie Winery and Vineyards. It’s one of the best wineries in California, backed up by its string of awards including being named the ‘Best Winery in Sonoma’ and the ‘Best Tasting Room in Napa and Sonoma’ at San Francisco Magazine’s Best of Wine Country Awards.

MacRostie Winery and Vineyard’s history goes back to 1974 when there were only a few dozen small wineries in Sonoma Valley. That year, Steve MacRostie came to this still relatively unknown region and made his first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. He would go on to establish MacRostie Winery in 1987 and today we’re all thankful he saw the golden potential of Sonoma! MacRostie’s is now a Sonoma Coast icon, famed for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Steve is recognised as one of the region’s pioneers and is still pouring a lot of love into these superb wines.

Back over in Rutherford in Napa Valley, you can’t go wrong with vino at Frog’s Leap Winery . Established by the winemaking pioneer, John Williams, this is truly one of the best wineries in California. John arrived in Napa Valley in the early ‘70s and worked at legendary wineries such as Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Spring Mountain Vineyard before establishing Frog’s Leap Winery in 1981.

Inspired by the organic farming techniques of the finest French estates, Frog’s Leap became of the first wineries to farm grapes organically in 1989. Today, you can raise a glass of their award-winning California red wine including Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc… And sip away while surrounded by historic farmhouses, stunning gardens, and lush vineyards.

Winery tasting and tour reservations

Reservation policies differ at almost every winery; some allow walk-ins while others require appointments in advance. We recommend booking reservations when possible even when they aren’t required, especially on weekends when the valley lights up with activity.

Wineries usually have tours a few times each day, with the last tour running around 3:30 or 4:00pm, so keep this in mind when planning which wineries you want to tour versus the ones where you simply want to enjoy a tasting. Tasting reservation windows usually run a bit later in the day.

It can be tempting to rush around to as many wineries as you can fit into your itinerary, but we recommend taking it slow and truly enjoying each location – nobody likes feeling rushed through their glass of wine. Tastings usually take around an hour and a half, especially if there is a tour included, and can stretch longer if you’re enjoying the setting.

Traveling with a group

Restaurants and wineries in wine country are not keen on splitting checks for groups, and things can get a bit crazy when it comes to organizing finances after a day full of meals and wine tastings. We recommend using a bill-splitting app like Splitwise , which has incredible versatility when it comes to entering payments and settling up. Users can create groups, assign costs to specific individuals within that group and easily pay using Venmo at the end of the trip. Other bill-splitting apps include Settle Up and Splittr .

Vacation rentals in wine country

Vacation rental companies like AirBnB and VRBO are hugely popular across the United States, and California is no different. However, Napa Valley instituted laws in 2016 reining in vacation rentals, and properties have to register with and be approved by the local government; a public  list details all the addresses in Napa that are legally operating as vacation rentals. That said, homeowners are still hosting plenty of unregistered AirBnB options, but as a traveler, be aware not every listing is legal.  Sonoma’s policies are more lax than its neighbor.

Transportation hacks

Drinking wine all day is bound to lead to a buzz. Designated drivers are your best bet for safe, responsible exploration of wine country, but there are plenty of other options should all members of the group want to partake.

Ride services like Uber and Lyft frequent the valley; share costs with friends and hop along from winery to winery without worry. The area is not big – Napa Valley is only about 30 miles from top to bottom – so rideshare costs remain reasonable.

California wine country also has plenty of driving services to help visitors travel safely from destination to destination – try Beau Wine Tours or Magnum Tours .

Should I buy a bottle? Tasting fees and bottle shipping

Wineries offer wine tastings in the hope their visitors will buy a bottle (or several) after its conclusion, and tastings in wine country aren’t free, generally running around $35-45 dollars. Some wineries will waive tasting fees if you buy a bottle, while others require more of a commitment (a multiple-bottle purchase, or a wine-club membership). Always ask about the policy, because it’s generally not advertised.

If you do find that perfect bottle of cabernet sauvignon you’d like to bring home, it’s often more budget-friendly to take the wine with you rather than having the winery ship it. Shipping services like Buffalo Shipping Post in Napa specialize in wine and offer special insulated boxes and insurance to protect against breakage and loss. If you are a US resident, be aware some states don’t allow direct shipments of alcohol; make sure you can send your bottles home before purchasing.

If you only have a few bottles and are taking to the skies to make it home, checking a bag is also an option. However, wine is more likely to break and most airlines now charge checked-bag fees, so compare shipping fees with bag fees and make the call that’s best for you.

Finding deals in California wine country

California wine country isn’t exactly a budget destination, but you can find some savings along the way. If wine is your thing and you envision returning to the valleys in the future, a wine club membership at your favorite winery could be a good option. Generally, memberships afford perks like free tours and tastings, as well as discounts at sister properties.

Other cost-savers include apps like Winery Finder, which offer 2-for-1 deals at more than 100 wineries after you get through a $10 paywall.

Best california wine regions to visit.

If you’re a wine drinker, you likely already know there are some incredible California wine regions to visit. In fact, more than 80% of the wine made in the U.S. is made in California. It’s the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, behind Italy , France and Spain .

Doesn’t that get you excited for a California wine trip?

We’ve spent quite a bit of time touring around California’s wine regions to discover the varied types of wine produced in the state. I can say without a doubt that some of our favorite wine tasting moments were in California.

» See a few of these Ultimate California Bucket List places along the way!

The state is vast, but there are really just give wine-producing regions: North Coast, Central Coast, Central Valley, Sierra Foothills, and South Coast. However, each of those can then be broken into sub-regions, and when you get right down to it, there are over 100 AVAa throughout the many sub-regions.

That might sound overwhelming. Where do you start? But no worries. We’re going to break down the regions and share a few of our favorite AVAs inside each, where you can enjoy a weekend of wine tasting.

California Wine Map

best wine trip california

Before you try to understand California’s wine regions, you should see it all laid out on a map. This will help you visualize where everything is and how it all nestles together. If you’re doing a California road trip, you can build in a stop to a region you pass through.

The regions we’ll be talking about are:

  • North Coast (blue)
  • Central Coast (orange)
  • Central Valley (yellow)
  • Sierra Foothills (purple)
  • South Coast (green)

Planning a Wine Tour in California

Napa Valley

I’d recommend choosing a single region, or finding regions that are close to each other, if you want to visit more than one in a trip. This is because distances between the regions is often quite large. However, you could do Sonoma and Napa in the same trip, or Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo .

It’s most typical in California to plan your own itinerary, make any necessary appointments, and drive yourself around in wine country. However, there are also plenty of tour companies offering to do the planning, arranging, and driving for you. Choose whichever one suits your needs.

If you live near one of these areas, you can easily do a 3 or 4 wineries in a day trip. We often go for a day and fit in as many as we can. But if you’re driving a long distance or flying in for wine tasting, you’ll want to plan for at least 3 days in the wine region to really feel immersed.

» Check out the Priority Wine Pass with Exclusive Discounts and Perks.

Do I Need an Appointment?

You don’t always need appointments at wineries in California, but it has definitely become more of a thing since Covid. Tasting rooms are now trying to manage the number of people visiting so you don’t end up with a crowded bar, like it used to be. It is always a good idea to check the website of all the wineries you plan to go to, at least a week in advance.

We’ve found that some of the most popular wineries have packed schedules and it’s hard to get in. But smaller wineries have openings. So it’s best to choose a few smaller and a few larger wineries, to balance out.

Paso Robles

How Much Does it Cost?

Wine tasting in California has gotten quite a bit more expensive in the past few years. Gone are the days of free tastings. In fact, many regions are charging $20-40 per tasting. With this fee, you’ll get around 5 wine tasting pours. You can share a tasting at most places, which will cut down on the cost of it, and help you manage your intake.

Something I’m excited to tell you about is the Priority Wine Pass , which helps me tasting fees a lot easier to swallow. The Pass is simply the easiest way to  save on wine tasting  in California.

Show your card at any of the over  300+ wineries  that accept the pass and start saving money. Many of the wine tasting discounts are 2-for-1. That means you and your tasting partner only pay for one tasting. If the winery usually charges $25 per tasting, you save $25. The pass is valid 365 days from the day you purchase it. It’s pretty awesome. We buy a new one every year. It’s good in California, Washington, and Oregon.

California Wine Regions

All five of these California wine regions is quite different. You can expect to find a different climate, different soil types, and vastly differing terroir that will make the wines very different in style and taste.

North Coast

In the North Coast, you will find the grape growing regions that put California wine on the map, including the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Solano, and Marin.

More than half of the state’s wineries are located here, and it is also a designated AVA. Many AVAs and growing regions exist within this enormous AVA, like the ones listed above.

If you have the chance to visit this region, you’ll be rewarded with some of the best wineries and views in the state. Below are two of our favorite growing areas within the North Coast.

Sonoma valley.

Sonoma vineyard

Sonoma County is home to 13 AVAs and more than 500 wineries spread across a huge swath of the north coast of California. Some of these AVAs are Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek, Chalk Hill, and Knights Valley.

Visit Adastra Wines if you want a real treat. They are well known for their Pinot Noir, but also offer Chardonnay, Syrah, and more. Next up is Alexander Valley Vineyards . This winery is perfect for the self-proclaimed connoisseur or the complete beginner.

Finally, wrap up your trip at Highway 12 Vineyards & Winery . They take true pride in the wine that they make and are knowledgeable in the different regions of their grapes. Their offerings include Cabernet Franc, Meritage, Zinfandel, and more.

Napa Valley

It’s no secret that Napa Valley is considered THE wine country of California. With gorgeous views and vineyards for miles, Napa is a must for wine lovers.

Begin your adventure at Castello di Amorosa . You can take a guided tour of the castle and taste their wines. From there, continue your journey to Markham Vineyards . It’s one of the first wineries that was founded in Napa Valley and has been going strong since 1874.

Wrap up your day at Franciscan Estate . It was founded in 1973 and started by making their own Cabernet Sauvignon. During your tasting, you can sample some of their popular choices like Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Central Coast

The Central Coast wine region stretches from San Francisco all the way to Los Angeles and can be divided into two smaller areas in the north and south.

The Northern Central Coast area encompasses Livermore Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Carmel Valley, and a few smaller AVAs. Its cooler coastal climate is known mostly for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though there are many white varietals being grown there.

The Southern Central Coast area encompasses the key wine regions of Paso Robles, York Mountains, Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande, Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley . The grape varietals found in the south are Rhone varietals, like Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, Italian varietals like Barbera and Sangiovese, and Burgundian varietals. Zinfandel, one of my personal favorites, is also being grown here.

Central Coast Sub-Regions

Carmel-by-the-sea wine tasting.

Wrath Tasting room

Carmel is a beautiful area, with beaches , vineyards, and lovely ocean views. The entire area around Central California coast is a sight to see. That’s what makes traveling there in an RV so fantastic. You can set up in an RV park near the beach, then set out for day trips to Monterey and Carmel-by-the Sea.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small European-style village that is well loved and maintained by the community. They don’t allow big-box stores or chain hotels, so wherever you choose to stay will be a locally owned inn. There are many adorable shops and restaurants to visit, in between tastings.

If you’re in town for a wine tasting weekend, visit the downtown tasting rooms for a charming weekend activity. See our full guide to wine tasting in Carmel-by-the-Sea for winery recommendations.

Paso Robles

Eberle Winery

This wine region is known for its dark, full-bodied reds. Located along Central California’s beautiful coast, Paso Robles is the largest AVA in California. With 26,000 acres of vineyards and over 200 wineries producing premium wines, Paso Robles has steadily became recognized as a world-class wine-growing area and no longer takes a backseat to Sonoma and Napa Valley.

With its ideal climate and rustic wine country charm, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a weekend of wine tasting, particularly in the spring before it really starts to heat up. The area has a perfect climate for growing Zinfandel and other hearty red grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

There are a couple of distinct tasting areas. The historic downtown area has more than 15 tasting rooms surrounded by local eateries, delis, cheese shops and olive oil producers, and can be enjoyed on foot. The westside wineries are scattered among the rolling hills to the west to town and are a bit harder to get to, with winding, narrow roads leading to some.

For a taste of award-winning 90+ point rated Zinfandels, plan stops at Turley Wine Cellars , Peachy Canyon Winery , Daou, and Adelaida Cellars . If you’re searching for views, drive along Adelaida Road, stopping at Lone Madrone , Adelaida Cellars, Tablas Creek, and Oso Libre.

Santa Barbara Wine Region

Riverbench Winery

The Santa Barbara wine region spans 50 miles, so be prepared with a plan before setting out in the car for a day of tasting. It encompasses 7 great AVAs, one of our favorites being Los Olivos , a small town with a big reputation for wine.

Our favorite Santa Barbara wine tasting areas are the downtown Funk Zone and the Foxen County wineries. These two areas tick all the boxes.

You’ll get a feel for the town of Santa Barbara, where many of the top wineries have tasting rooms, and you’ll get a chance to drive around the countryside and see the vineyards and wineries that are spread throughout the region to the northwest of Santa Barbara.

Downtown you’ll find a collective of tasting rooms in areas called the Funk Zone and El Paseo. This enclaves have a variety of winery tasting rooms to enjoy without the need to drive around the countryside.

In the Funk Zone, you’ll find tasting rooms like  Riverbench  and  Santa Barbara Winery  — both have some terrific Pinot Noirs to try — and  The Valley Project , a modern tasting room with an incredible map of the region displayed on their back wall. It’s a must for newbies to get the lay of the land.

Sta Rita Hills vineyards

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is located outside of Santa Barbara and it contains the largest concentration of wineries in Santa Barbara County. If you’ve watched the movie Sideways, this is where it was set. It’s known primarily for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, among others.

Within the Santa Ynez AVA are 7 additional AVAs:

Santa Ynez Valley AVA is an east-west corridor with cool coastal temps that heat up as you go inland. This produces great conditions for both lighter varietals like Pinot Noir and more bold varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Rhône varietals have also become quite popular in this area.

Sta. Rita Hills AVA stretches from Lompoc to Buellton, producing some of the areas best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.

Ballard Canyon AVA , established in 2013, is focused primarily on Syrah, which grows well in this mixed climate with cool marine influences coming from Sta. Rita Hills and warmer air coming from Happy Canyon.

Los Olivos District AVA is the newest to be recognized, in 2016. We love visiting the cute town of Los Olivos for wine tasting. It’s not overrun with visitors and it’s a great place to spend a day. The wines are mostly Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhone varietals.

Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA is on the eastern border of the valley and is a little more isolated than the rest of the region. There are no tasting rooms in the canyon. This is where most of the Bordeaux varietals are planted and some really high-quality wine is being produced there.

Santa Maria Valley AVA – I personally love this region because of the foggy coastal influence and the northernmost positioning, which creates complex soil conditions and diverse microclimates. You’ll find great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in this area.

Alisos Canyon AVA is the newest approved AVA near Los Alamos and it is a Rhone-focused wine region with great Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier.

Ojai Valley

Ojai Vineyard Winery

Of the dozens of impressive wine regions of California, the Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-Hi) is one of the most beautiful and certainly one of the most charming for a weekend wine getaway.

Located 90 miles north of Los Angeles and only 30 miles from  Santa Barbara  (another great wine tasting region), Ojai is accessible as a quick day trip from nearby cities, but it also makes a fantastic weekend trip. Not only is Ojai packed full of great wineries, there’s a lot of wonderful restaurants and shops to explore.

As you drive into the region, you’ll be greeted by the looming mountain range and citrus groves that line the valley. There are olive orchards and sprawling family ranches. And vineyards surrounding it all.

» See our full guide to wine tasting in Ojai for winery recommendations.

Central Valley

Despite receiving most of the accolades for producing the best California wines, the Central Valley produces nearly three-quarters of the state’s grapes, making it the backbone of the state’s wine industry.

Wines from this region are often just labeled “California”, rather than calling out a specific region, since many of these growing areas are not “popular” or well known.

The Central Valley is a huge area that encompasses Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, Madera, and Fresno counties. However, now there is a division of this region to include Inland Valley regions that are further away from the coast.

Sierra Foothills

The Sierra Foothills Region is located more inland and so isn’t influenced by the cool coastal climate. You might know it as home to the gold mining towns of California’s Gold Rush history.

In this area, you’ll find beautiful rolling hills, old vines, and much warmer temperatures that lead to top quality zinfandel, Italian varietals like Barbera and Sangiovese, and Rhone grapes like Syrah and Viognier.

You might not believe it, but the Sierra Foothills wine region is one of the largest AVAs in the U.S. It covers 2.6 million acres (1.05 million hectares). It also has more award-winning wines (mostly from Amador County) than any other region. Some of the largest wine producers are now moving into the area to try to capitalize on that.

The AVAs contained within this region are:

  • Amador County
  • Calaveras County
  • El Dorado County
  • Nevada County
  • Placer County
  • Yuba County

Southern California

The Southern California wine region encompasses grape-growing regions in five counties of Southern California: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego. As with other regions in California, the larger appellation includes a number of smaller sub-appellations.

One of the most prominent of the sub-appelations is Temecula Valley, which is at an elevation of 1,500 feet and has gaps in the coastal mountain range that allow cooling from the ocean that influences the wine. However, other parts of the Southern California region are starting to stand out as well, like Malibu and San Diego County.

Temecula De Portola Wine Trail

Temecula Wine Region, hot air balloons

Temecula’s De Portola Wine Trail is off the beaten path, about . Located in the more rural, equestrian side of the Temecula Valley, this route contains quite a few amazing wineries that you must visit. I picked this particular stretch of wineries because one of my favorites is actually located here.

Start your journey at the Cougar Vineyard & Winery . It’s family owned and operated which mean that they truly care about their wine. They specialize in 100% Estate Italian varietals.

From there, travel down the road to Danza del Sol Winery . It’s an Italian-countryside inspired winery that is both dog and horse friendly.

My personal favorite— Fazeli Cellars —is next. From just about anywhere, you can see a spectacular view of the valley. It was started in 2001 by the Fazeli family and has been going strong ever since. Their tasting offerings are Hafez, Saadi, and grape Shiraz. The Shiraz is to die for.

Escondido vineyard

Settled in the coastal mountains of Southern California, Escondido offers both an urban and natural atmosphere with easy access to San Diego. There are many boutique wine tasting rooms and vineyards to visit, along with a variety of culinary experiences and farmer’s markets.

If you’re looking for a unique foodie vacation or a lesser-known California wine region to explore, Escondido has everything you could want right at your fingertips. After visiting once, it’s likely you’ll want to return again. The Lawrence Welk Resort Villas are a great way to do that in affordable-luxury style.

While many vacationers only consider hotels and Airbnb when looking for accommodations in their favorite destinations, like Escondido, it can be more economical and convenient to consider a timeshare instead. They provide you with very nice accommodations and the perfect home base for exploring.

» See our full guide to wine tasting in Escondido for winery recommendations.

With so many great California wine regions to visit, you’ll be traversing the state for quite some time visiting wineries and going on wine country weekends. We love it in California and we know you’re going to love it too.

Santa Barbara's Stearns Wharf

Santa Barbara is the star of southern California wine tasting, with more than 275 wineries fueled by a climate ideal for growing cool-climate grape varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's vineyards are located in the Santa Ynez Valley, which is cooled by breezes from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in wines with elegant flavors and aromas. Most wineries are smaller, family-owned boutique wineries.

To get to the Santa Ynez Valley from downtown, expect about a 45-minute scenic drive through rolling vineyards of the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys. Once there, most wineries are free to visit, though you’ll usually pay per tasting (wine flight fees usually cost between $15 and $30, depending on the winery). Sometimes fees are waived with purchase.

If wineries aren't your thing, (or you just want to fill your day with more activities than simply wine tasting) there's plenty else to do in the Santa Ynez Valley and the broader Santa Barbara County. That includes Santa Ynez Valley's charming neighbor of Solvang, which is a charming Danish-inspired village known for its unique thatched roofs and windmills. Don't leave without trying the Aebleskiver, which is a puffy Danish pancake).

If you're visiting Santa Barbara but can't make it out to the Santa Ynez Valley, you can still get a taste of the region's wine scene without trekking too far. That's thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, which is a series of tasting rooms that are mostly located within walkable downtown Santa Barbara. And you might very well contain your trip almost entirely to the downtown area, as it's home to some of the nation's best beaches, a stunning, historic courthouse, funky art and no shortage of tacos.

To get there, many folks fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and drive about two hours. But if you can, try flying into the smaller Santa Barbara airport, which is delightfully charming .

Sonoma is a neighbor to Napa, and in many ways, it's better. In fact, many of the locals prefer it. Sonoma has a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere than Napa, its wineries are less crowded, and — unlike Napa's endless array of Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels — Sonoma is more affordable and accessible.

One of Sonoma's top cities is Kenwood. There, you'll find not just wineries but plenty else to do, including the nearby Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. There, you'll find miles of trails, a waterfall, Bald Mountain and the Robert Ferguson Observatory. to the south is Wildwood Nursery, which features sculptures scattered on trails throughout five lushly-forested acres, plus more than 250 varieties of Japanese maples, dogwoods, ginkgos, conifers, edible plant starts, and bonsai-style beech, maple, and evergreen trees.

As far as where to stay, the most luxury option (without the luxury price tag at Napa's highest-end hotels is the Kenwood Inn and Spa. The Mediterranean, villa-style resort doesn't skimp on amenities. There's a gourmet breakfast every morning where you can pick your choice of entree (no heat lamps and everyone touching the same egg buffet platter here). In the evening, there's a wine hour featuring savory bites that you could practically make a meal out of. And hot, fresh cookies are served throughout the day.

Specializing in full-bodied red wines, the Sierra Foothills are somewhat isolated from the other California wine regions and contain some of the state's oldest producing vines. It was here where Zinfandel originated, and many of the area's wineries produce a renowned "Big" Zin.

Nicknamed the "Gold Country," the Sierra Foothills harbor a rich mining history. The region attracted a great number of fortune-seekers during the California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century. Fun fact: Amador County in the Gold Country was California's only county to actually expand vineyard acreage during prohibition years.

Kayakers paddle up and down the Russian River.

Part of the Sonoma Valley, Russian River is California's second most popular wine region. The area measures nearly 200 square miles, containing more than 80 wineries. The region is most known for its cool-climate varietals -- namely Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

Russian River contains an eclectic variety of wineries, from family-owned establishments to big conglomerations. Close to San Francisco, it makes a fantastic addition to any Bay Area vacation. Driving tours are available and offer a gorgeous cruise through the rolling hills, small towns and charming wineries that characterize the region.

A vineyard and bike trail in Livermore Wine Country.

An hour east from San Francisco, the Livermore Valley boasts a rich history of grape-growing and over 130 years in the winery business. Spanish missionaries planted the first grapes in 1760, and the first commercial vines sprung up in the 1840s.

In 1889, Livermore won America a gold medal at the Paris Exposition, bringing California wine worldwide attention. The Valley was the first place to bottle varietal labeled Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Petite Sirah. Supposedly, almost 80% of the state's Chardonnay vines have genetic roots in Livermore Valley.

Nestled in the Sacramento River Delta, Clarksburg is marked by beautiful landscapes of crisscrossing sloughs, swing bridges, drawbridges and, of course, fecund vineyards. Summer in Clarksburg is nothing short of idyllic, the days warm and the night cool. With 10,000 acres of vineyards, the region produces over 25 varieties of wine grapes. Clarksburg is essentially a collection of small towns, wineries, wine shops, vineyards, classy restaurants and sparkling waterways.

A small chapel on a hill which can be seen while driving on Highway 46 east of Paso Robles.

Between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California's Central Coast, Paso Robles is a sprawling 26,000 acres of vineyard with more than 40 wine grape varieties. Not only is the region large and diverse, but it is near a number of worthwhile travel destinations.

The historic downtown area is home to a number of upscale wine shops, restaurants and boutiques. The famous Heart Castle is not far north, and breathtaking California coast is not far off. The landscape of Paso Robles is diverse with river beds, rolling hills and picturesque mountains.

Vineyard with drip irrigation, Santa Cruz County, California.

The Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation was the first wine-growing region in the nation defined by a mountain range. It stretches from Mount Madonna to Half Moon Bay with a minimum ocean-side vineyard elevation of 400ft.

Many of the vineyards boast astounding views of the coastline. The cooling ocean breeze and air from the San Francisco Bay create ideal grape-growing conditions. Though the region contains more than 70 wineries (most of them family-run), the Santa Cruz Mountains do not produce large quantities of wine. But what they do bottle is both distinct and sophisticated.

The Sea Rock Inn overlooks the Pacific Ocean in Mendocino.

A couple hours north of San Francisco, Mendocino is easily one of the most scenic regions in all of California. A beatific melange of rocky coastline, inviting beaches, lush hills and cozy villages, the region even houses multiple state parks. In addition to acres upon acres of vineyards, you can enjoy redwood forests and majestic landscapes.

Visitors even have the chance to catch a glimpse of migrating whales. Between wine tastings, you can go for refreshing hikes, visit organic breweries or walk along the beaches.

This final pick isn't in California, but it's so close that it felt like a mistake to overlook. That's Valle de Guadalupe, which is located in Baja California, Mexico — just 70 miles south of the San Diego border and is home to more than 100 boutique wineries.

It's more accessible than Europe’s wine regions, and it's more under-the-radar than Napa, providing a convenient luxury international destination that's an easy drive from southern California.

Resorts in the region such as El Cielo Resort have positioned themselves as eco-tourism destinations ideal for romantic trips or people seeking to learn about grapevine cultivation and wine production.

12 Amazing Northern California Wineries You Must Visit

F or my birthday this year, I decided to visit a handful of Northern California wineries in partnership with Visit California. Though I had been to Sonoma, I had never experienced Napa or that hidden gem of wineries, Lake County.

We all think California first when planning a wine tasting trip, and rightfully so with some of the best wine regions in the world.

But did you know the Golden State is the fourth-largest wine-producing region in the entire world? The United States falls fourth behind Italy, France, and Spain, primarily because California produces 80% of US wine and 95% of the country's wine exports. California wine is pretty special, and we were excited to visit some new spots.

Every single winery on this list has produced award-winning wines, so a visit to any of these wineries will be a treat.

Whether you go wine tasting with friends, book a private tasting, or attend one of the many wine-tasting experiences, you're going to love these wineries in Northern California.

Though I did this trip over about five days, you could make a day trip of visiting the wineries in each county.

If you're thinking of visiting Southern California, be sure to check out my favorite Santa Barbara restaurants . You'll find a lot of wonderful places to taste wine, there, too.

Where is this Region of Northern California ?

All three regions and eleven northern California wineries we visited are just north of the San Francisco Bay area, so you'll fly into San Francisco International Airport and rent a car for the trip.

In Napa, many of the wineries are close together, some were even walking distance from our room at the Harvest Inn . But things are more spread out in Sonoma and even more so in Lake County.

Each winery is marked on the map below, so be sure to come back and refer to it when you're ready to start exploring.

Sonoma County Wineries

Sonoma is actually the largest wine producer among these three counties. It's also the largest area geographically, so has more vineyards and wineries.

It's a beautiful area with gorgeous scenery, making it a great vacation destination. Because of the vast array of soil types and microclimates, more than 60 grape varieties are grown in Sonoma wine country, producing a diverse range of delicious wines.

Tip: To save a bundle, you can purchase a Sonoma County Tasting Pass for 1 day, 2 days, or 30 days. This pass has a lot of free tastings!

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

We've been members of Coppola Winery in Geyserville for about twelve years, getting quarterly shipments of their red wines. There is a lot more to do at this winery than taste, so make sure to take time to explore!

Of course, wine tasting is the reason most people visit wine country, Coppola included.

  • If you don't have a reservation, you'll want to step inside the lounge for a tasting at the Main Bar. This is complimentary for wine members and $25 for visitors.
  • Reservations are recommended for a seated tasting on the Terrace, which takes about 45 minutes. This tasting flight is $20 for wine members and $40 for visitors.
  • You can also take a complimentary tour of the property as a wine member. Guest pay $10 plus tax each for this experience. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

We participated in a seated tasting inside instead of the Terrace Tasting as it was drizzling outside, but it was lovely.

As much as we drink Coppola's red wines, my husband said he's forgotten how much he enjoyed their Chardonnays. Guess we'll be ordering Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in the future!

After your tasting, explore the memorabilia from Francis Ford Coppola's movies. This is a self guided tour so take your time exploring the Academy Awards, props like Don Corleone's desk from The Godfather, and a sneak peek at Coppola's upcoming movie.

If the weather is warm (May 4th- September 29th), make plans to visit the pool area. This is quite the experience so be sure to check it out and book as far in advance as you can.

Have lunch or dinner at Rustic Restaurant . They have a lot of choices on the menu, featuring Francis Ford Coppola’s favorites, and offer daily specials, so be sure to ask. The portions are huge so keep that in mind.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery

This was our second visit to the Jordan Vineyard & Winery in Healdsburg and it's still one of our favorites.

Our last visit was ten years ago for the Jordan Winery Estate Tour and Tasting , so we were able to take a ride out through the vineyards and see what else they were growing as well as experience a tasting outside amidst the vineyards.

This visit started with a champagne welcome toast and tour of the historic oak wine tanks room along with a tasting of the Jordan Russian River Valley Chardonnay and hors d’oeuvre.

Next was a tasting of the Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in the Grand Library of the Winery’s Château.

Finally, we took a walk through a secret door into the French-inspired cellar room for a small group seated wine pairing with food prepared by Executive Chef Jesse Mallgren.

This is such a special way to taste wines at Jordan. Check out all their tours before you go. If you’d like to experience the wine tour we took, it’s called Discover the Château .

Cline Family Cellars

Though we didn't have time to visit Cline Family Cellars in Sonoma Valley this time, we were members for years and still love their wines. We found Cline on a family vacation back in 2014, and it's the perfect winery to visit if you have kids with you. Mom and Dad can enjoy wine tastings while taking the kids on a self-guided tour of the property.

Lake County Wineries

After a couple of days in Sonoma, we headed north of Napa and Sonoma to Lake County, excited to explore wineries and vineyards there. The drive to Kelseyville was about an hour from Geyserville, with beautiful views and lots of twists and turns my husband loved. I was happy to let him drive!

Though Napa and Sonoma wineries are typically closer together, there is something really special about the wide open space of Lake County. For those interested in the California Gold Rush , there's also a lot of history in there.

In Lake County, you'll find more than 30 wineries, the cleanest air in the Golden State, Clear Lake - America's oldest lake, a robust arts and entertainment scene, and local artisan shops. I wish we'd had more time to explore! Fortunately, we did make time for the five wineries listed below.

Shannon Family of Wines

We spent a couple of hours with Joy Merrilees, the Head of Production, and Jerónimo Da Valle, winemaker at Shannon Family of Wines . It's so fun to hang out with other wine lovers, and we could have stayed all day!

We started the tour with a glass of sparkling wine, their Cricket Farms Brut Rosé, followed by the 2023 Clay Shannon Sauvignon Blanc and 2023 Rosé.

The Sauvignon Blanc was especially easy to drink, with a crisp, bright flavor. We took a break from tasting and explored a little of the property with Joy and Jerónimo, who hails from Argentina. Joy and Jerónimo’s passion for winemaking makes you want to learn more, and they are happy to share and answer questions.

Following the winery tour we began the red tasting experience with the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was wonderful. Next was the 2019 Ovis Cabernet Sauvignon, which my husband and I knowingly gave each other the look that we would be ordering this one for home.

Ovis is Latin for sheep, and as the Shannon family has sheep that are “wooly caretakers” of their vineyards, this small lot collection pays homage to them.

It was fascinating to learn about how the sheep feed on the grasses and put back beneficial bacteria into the soil. It’s a brilliant partnership. We tasted the 2020 Buck Shack Zinfandel, aged in bourbon barrels, and the 2020 Clay Shannon Red Blend, and I loved them both

Shannon Family of Wines has a special discount on your first visit of 50% off your order with a flat $10 shipping. We joined the wine club and already have our shipment. I’m looking forward to tasting our next shipment and sharing it with friends. By the way, wine clubs can save you a bundle, so if you find something you love, join!

And speaking of friends, the team at Shannon makes you feel like you are part of theirs. It was a great way to begin our exploration of Lake County.

Boatique Winery

No, that isn't a typo. The Boatique Winery actually has a gorgeous antique boat on the premises. The name is a play on the words boat and boutique winery.

The small winery tasting room when you first enter Boatique is cozy, but there's more seating available when they are busy. It was chilly when we were there, and I loved the bonus of being able to sit by the fire while learning about their wines.

We enjoyed the 2021 Pinot Noir and 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tasting of the 2020 Madi’s Muse Estate Red and 2020 Runabout Estate Red, which were lovely.

Boatique has a few choices for tastings, including seasonal sunset tastings. Book on their website or give them a call.

You can actually stay on a vineyard right next door in The Cottage. More on that coming soon!

Brassfield Estate Winery

Though we didn't have time to visit, a representative from Brassfield Estate Winery joined us for dinner so we were able to taste a few of the wines from another Lake County winery.

Brassfield Winery is known for their handcrafted wines and sustainable farming. What was once a 1600-acre cattle ranch is now a vineyard.

Did you know the bottom part of the valley (called the valley floor) is perfect for growing grapes because it's more fertile? Vines growing on mountains are more exposed and struggle, not able to produce as much as those in the valley.

That certainly doesn't mean one is better than the other. With the mountainside grapes, the struggle produces less but what it does produce is more concentrated. This results in wines with bolder flavors. That's your wine lesson for the day!

Brassfield has vineyards on the high valley floor as well as the volcanic ridges, producing a wide variety of grapes. I wish we'd had time to visit, but we were able to taste the Serenity Rosé of Pinot Noir and the 2022 Pinot Gris, which I loved.

We also tasted the 2019 Syrah and the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, both paired well with the lamb lollipops I was eating.

They also offer tasting fees waived with the purchase of two bottles, so head out and order the charcuterie board to pair with one bottle and take the other one home. A bottle of good wine and a charcuterie board is heaven for me!

Check out the website and plan to visit when you're in Lake County.

Six Sigma Ranch & Winery

If you recognize the name and are wondering what the relationship is, Kaj Ahlmann had a long successful career in asset management, often using the Six Sigma methodology in his business strategy. Today, he uses the Six Sigma methods in the growing of grapes and winemaking.

We had so much fun at Six Sigma Ranch & Winery , partly because there is so much to do, but also because the family is just so darn nice! This family-owned winery was one of our favorite stops while in Lake County.

As soon as we arrived, we jumped into a Pinzgauer, which is like a Hummer on steroids!

The ride was so much fun, and we stopped to have a tasting of their Wildflower Picnics Rosé while Christian Ahlmann, Kaj's son and President of Six Sigma Winery, told us about the vineyards while we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery.

This is a wine tasting experience anyone can do on Saturdays, so give them a call and set it up. It's only $25 per person and a wine tasting is included. Meeting with the grape growers is not something you can do everywhere.

The Stage Coach Stop Tasting Room was actually a stagecoach stop in the 1800s, and you really should go in and browse the wine, food, and gift items you can take home. You'll also see books about Topper the Pig, who you can meet and feed acorns. He's pretty cute!

We enjoyed a tasting of their 2021 Marianne's Rosé, 2019 Diamond Mine Red Blend, 2018 Cuvée Annette, and the 2019 Reserve Tempranillo. The Tempranillo was my personal favorite.

Six Sigma Ranch has activities all month long, like Paella night on the first Wednesday, weekly guided hikes, Ranch Table Dinners, and barrel tastings. Check the website or Facebook page for the schedule.

Wild Diamond Vineyards

The views from Wild Diamond Vineyards are spectacular as it sits at a 2,200-foot elevation. With 9,000+ acres of vineyards, this property seems to go on forever. Did I mention those views?

The red volcanic soils, combined with warm days and cool nights, are perfect for grape-growing.

Tastings are available Thursday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. with extended hours until 6 beginning in May. You can walk in, but reservations are encouraged.

I'd recommend you try one of their Rhone varietals under the label Dumb Luck. We enjoyed the 2016 Grenache, with flavors of citrus, berries, and spicy cinnamon.

We also really liked the Wild Diamond 2016 Cabernet Franc, which received a score of 90 from Wine Enthusiast. I thought this was a great wine and it would pair well with my husband's amazing grilled steaks with mushrooms.

Take a walk and explore. See if you can find a Lake County diamond, also referred to as Moon Tears. You'll only find these gemstones here in Lake County, near Mt. Konocti. This really was a wonderful experience and the perfect setting for relaxing with friends and enjoying amazing wines.

Napa Valley

Our final destination was Napa Valley, with more than 400 wineries and 90 tasting rooms open to the public. It's not surprising Napa has been called the Tasting Room Capital of the World .

One of the reasons Napa Valley is so popular is that there's so much to do besides wine tasting, like cycling the Silverado Trail, eating at the French Laundry, and shopping.

Though all those things are on our list for next time, we were nearing the end of our Northern California wineries trip, with five wineries left to visit.

Raymond Vineyards

Raymond Vineyards in St Helena has a plethora of tours and tastings, like release events, upscale private Library Tastings, the seasonal Tasting in the Grove, and so much more. There is always something fun going on at Raymond Vineyards.

Experiencing Raymond Vineyards Winemaker for a Day was a special treat for my birthday. After a quick tour, you'll head to the lab and don your lab coat .

Your host will explain the process of combining wines to find your perfect Napa Valley Bordeaux-style red blend while a fun playlist blares in the background.

I learned so much about blending through trial and error. It was an absolute blast!

After you craft your wine, you'll follow your host to another room to fill your bottle, cork it, capsule it, and put on your custom label. You can take the one bottle or buy a case of your blend for gifts for family and friends. How cool is that?

My husband and I have loved HALL Wines for many years but have never had the chance to visit. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen we've worked together a couple of times.

HALL offers quite a few tasting opportunities, like the HALLmark Tour and Tasting, the Art of Cabernet Tasting, the Platinum Experience, and the Cabernet Collector Tasting, which we did.

We had tasted some of these offerings before, but it was fun to experience it there. Before we went inside, we tasted one of our favorites, the 2019 Kathryn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Once we were seated in the tasting room, we enjoyed experiencing the 2013 Bergfeld Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, 2019 HALL Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2018 Montagna Cabernet Sauvignon.

We always have 3 or 4 bottles of HALL wines on hand. They all pair so well with food and friends.

If you're wondering if the Clif Family is the same company that created the Clif Bar, the answer is yes. However, the Clif Bar portion of their business has been sold so they can focus on the winery.

We sat in the Clif Family Winery Tasting Room and enjoyed the 2022 Rosé of Grenache, 2022 Grenache, 2021 Proprietary Red Wine blend, and the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon.

This was our first introduction to Clif wines, and we enjoyed them all. I'm usually a bigger fan of reds, but I really loved the Rosé of Grenache with the small food pairing.

We also had lunch from the Clif Bruschetteria food truck, which was amazing. I'll be working on recreating that flatbread with squash!

Just like with the Clif Bar products, owners Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford are still passionate about sustainability and quality and practice organic farming in their vineyards.

The owners are still adventurers, and you'll see all kinds of cycling events including group rides and cycling charity events.

The last winery we visited before heading to SFO was V. Sattui Winery , another new one for us. Established in 1885 by Vittorio Sattui, you'd think it would be the oldest winery in Napa, but it's not. Surprisingly, you'll find many wineries in Napa that are over 100 years old!

V. Sattui has to be one of the loveliest wineries in Napa, with a gorgeous Reserve Tower Tasting room where I experienced a handful of their delicious wines while munching on a charcuterie board. This is such a beautiful tasting room!

This winery focuses on traditional wine-making methods, consistently receiving top honors for their wines. In fact, at the 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, they received 31 awards including the highest honor.

I tasted the 2022 Dry Riesling, which was crisp and vibrant. If you don't like Riesling, try this one with an open mind. Next I tasted the Howell Mountain Zinfandel, which I really enjoyed.

You won't find V. Sattui wines in stores. You can only get them at the winery or online directly from them. Their wines are crafted in small lots, but they offer a lot of different varietals.

Be sure to check out the wine cellar and store. There is a picnic area in the back on the outdoor patio with stunning views. Take a picnic lunch or a few small bites and sit outside to enjoy the California sunshine!

V. Sattui also has quite a few events, like dinners with Michelin-starred chefs. Check the website for their schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Joining a wine club is a way to explore more of the wines from a particular winery, often with great savings. There is no membership fee per se, but you commit to receiving a certain number of bottles, usually quarterly, from the wine club you join. You'll also get extra perks, like free tastings, invitations to special events, as well as being the first to taste new releases.

Every winery we visited was casual within reason. Jeans, nice shorts, and casual dresses are all fine. You wouldn't wear gym shorts and a tank top. If you're taking a tour of the vineyard or going anywhere behind the scenes, wear closed-toe shoes.

You may find some small wineries that still allow free tastings, but most charge a small fee. We have always found it was worth every penny to pay for a tasting.

Tips for Visiting Northern California Wineries

Make a reservation.

Not all wineries require a reservation, but if you know you're going, why not try to make a reservation?

Many wineries have a lot of tasting options, from basic tasting to reserve tasting, and some include wine tours and food pairings. Are you more interested in the intimate experience of a private tasting, or are you okay in a group? It's good to know which one you'd like to do before you go.

Some wineries also have indoor and outdoor seating, and if it's a busy time of year and the weather is good, you may have trouble getting a table outside. Call ahead or check the website for reservations.

Check the Website for Events

It's always good to see if there is a special event during the time you're visiting. Some wineries have events with live music or food, like the Paella nights at Six Sigma. I wish I'd known about that one! Most also have harvest season events. I would love to go back then as I bet the weather is gorgeous.

Think About What Kind of Wine You Enjoy

Think ahead about what kinds of wines you want to taste. If you love Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, look for a tasting that offers those wines.

Which Northern California wines are your favorites? I hope you'll try some from this list!

Stay tuned for more about this trip, including where to stay on a vineyard in each location!

Chardonnay is one of the wine world’s most recognized grapes. Its track record of producing some of the worlds finest whites has made it an extremely (and internationally) popular among winemakers hoping to produce head-turning bottlings as well as producers aiming for high volume and value. Featured in this Tasting Highlights are Chardonnays made around the globe, from classic regions like Burgundy ’s Mâconnais and Californian's Russian River Valley to South Africa and beyond. Even better, these wines come with relatively wallet-friendly prices ($50 or less, to be more precise).

Thanks to its ability to adapt to a range of climatic conditions , and its tendency for vigorous growth, Chardonnay is comparatively easy to cultivate. This also means it can yield a variety of styles depending on where it's grown. Wine Spectator 's tastings reflect this diversity and versatility: In 2023, our editors blind-tasted more than 1,100 Chardonnays from a wide spectrum of regions.

This lineup includes Copaín's Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2021, one of the top scorers, which shows peach, cream and lemon mint notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this wine and 10 others!

Tasting Highlights' wine reviews are fresh out of the tasting room, offering a sneak peek of our editors' most recent ratings—including scores and full tasting notes—to WineSpectator.com members.

10 Top US Hotels for Food and Drinks, According to the Experts

Rural properties with on-site farms and activities are winning over culinary-driven travelers while a few city stays stand out.

best wine trip california

Single Thread

The best part of having easy access to quality food, drink, and accommodations under one roof is flexibility. At hotels with inviting cafes, restaurants, and bars, you don’t have to venture far for a memorable drink or meal.

Among the second annual Global Tastemakers list of the best U.S. hotels for food and drink, you’ll find a nice balance of accommodations between metropolitan and more rural, scenic settings. California claimed some spots initially occupied by Las Vegas, while a luxurious, culinary-focused East Tennessee resort that’s adored by Americans and jet-setters from all over the world took the top spot.

Winner: Blackberry Farm (Walland, Tennessee)

Blackberry Farm

This secluded countryside resort nested on 4,200 acres in the Great Smoky Mountains offers over-the-top experiences ranging from black Périgord truffle hunting with wooly Lagotto Romagnolo dogs to off-roading in a kitted-out Lexus GX to naturally, unforgettable dining that happens to be all-inclusive. Most ingredients are plucked fresh from Blackberry’s working farm, foraged, or sustainably sourced from area producers to align with the resort’s long-held belief that eating as close to the land as possible benefits us and our planet.

SingleThread Farms (Healdsburg, California)

At SingleThread , Kyle and Katina Connaughton draw heavily from their years in Hokkaido, Japan. The 10-course tasting menu is artfully served kaiseki-style in traditional cookware like donabe and highlights seasonal seafood and Japanese vegetables from SingleThread’s garden. Their practice of omotenashi, the art of mindful Japanese hospitality, ensures you’ll not only feel full afterward but deeply cared for.

Twin Farms (Barnard, Vermont)

With nearly two dozen guest rooms and suites, eight treehouses set 20 feet off the ground, and over 300 forested acres, this all-inclusive haven in Vermont capitalizes on New England’s outdoor charms. The hotel hosts activities such as fly fishing, kayaking, and snowshoeing, perfect for experiencing the best of what the property has to offer. But it’s chef Nathan Rich’s hyper-local ethos — resort hives provide honey, while beef and pork are sourced within a 40-mile radius — that has regulars booking stays at Twin Farms year after year.

Ojai Valley Inn (Ojai, California)

Ojai Valley Inn

Since 1923, weary Californians have retreated to Ojai Valley Inn for its laid-back vibes and majestic natural beauty. But in recent years, the storied property has established itself as a culinary destination thanks to the work of Chef Andrew Foskey. At the signature restaurant Olivella, Foskey sends out elevated Italian classics with fresh California twists—all best paired with California wines, naturally.

Halekulani Hotel (Honolulu, Hawaii)

Courtesy Halekulani

The competition for luxury accommodations in Honolulu is stiff, but Halekulani shines above the rest for those who travel with eating well squarely in mind. Whether you’re treating yourself to exquisite French-Hawaiian fine dining at La Mer or extending the weekend vibes at Orchids’s famous Sunday brunch buffet, no meal is complete without a slice of Halekulani’s legendary and cloud-like coconut cake.

Montage (Healdsburg, California)

Emma Morris

Opened in 2021, Montage Healdsburg has quickly gained praise as one of Sonoma County’s best places to stay. Set on 258 rolling acres dotted with stately oaks and vineyards, this culinary- and wine-focused resort specializes in contemporary California cuisine with French flourishes. Don’t miss the five-course tasting menus crafted by chef de cuisine Sean Koenig or the family-style Sunday Suppers.

The Inn at Little Washington (Washington, Virginia)

Inn at Little Washington

Located in remote, rural Virginia, The Inn at Little Washington is something you may only get to experience once, if you’re very lucky. At this lavish, 23-room English-style hideaway, proprietor and self-taught chef Patrick O'Connell earned three Michelin stars for his extravagant French tasting menu sprinkled with whimsical touches like Faira, the rolling cow cheese cart.

Harbor House Inn (Mendocino, California)

Matt Morris

Hugging the rugged Pacific coastline, the historic Harbor House Inn boasts an exhilarating backdrop (picture tumbling turquoise waters and craggy rock islands) for executive chef Matthew Kammerer’s highly imaginative tasting menu showcasing the region’s naturally rich bounty while protecting the planet. To that end, Kammerer and his team regularly forage, reuse kitchen water for the garden, and upcycle fryer oil for candles.

Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Los Poblanos

Stretched across 25 acres of dreamy lavender fields, this intimate 45-room inn and working farm encourages guests to connect with the land in more than one way. For executive chef Christopher Bethoney, a tireless advocate of Rio Grande Valley Cuisine, this work is done at Campo. From an open kitchen, Bethoney prepares refreshingly unfussy plates composed of abundant and indigenous ingredients like heirloom corn.

Four Seasons Hotel (New Orleans)

Four Seasons

The 2021 opening of Four Seasons New Orleans made the Big Easy, which has long been a top dining destination, even more enticing. Two of the city’s most beloved chefs have set up shop here: Alon Shaya whips up refined versions of New Orleans classics at Miss River — the fried chicken is a fan favorite — while Donald Link’s Chemin à la Mer adds French flourishes to local dishes.

Plus One: Wynn Las Vegas

This glamorous resort on the North end of the Strip is in a league of its own when it comes to fine dining. Eschewing the celebrity chef model adopted by its Las Vegas counterparts, the Wynn instead offers award-winning signature restaurants including SW Steakhouse, Mizumi — which welcomed new executive chef Jeff Ramsey earlier this year — Sinatra, and Wing Lei, the first Chinese restaurant in the country to earn a Michelin star.

Global Tastemakers is a celebration of the best culinary destinations in the U.S. and abroad. We asked more than 180 food and travel journalists to vote on their favorites, including restaurants and bars, cities, hotels, airports, airlines, and cruises. We then entrusted those results to an expert panel of judges to determine each category’s winners. In many categories, we’ve included a Plus One, hand-selected by our expert panel, to shout out more culinary destinations we don’t want our readers to miss.
