19 Spectacular Things to Do in Brattleboro VT

By Author Gabe Schatz

Posted on Published: February 8, 2024

There’s only one Brattleboro in this big wide world, and it’s tucked away in southeastern Vermont on the banks of the Connecticut and West Rivers.

With just over 12,000 residents, Brattleboro is a small town with urban flair.

Scenes from a recent trip to Brattleboro include the farmers market, Fort Dummer, and lots of art galleries.

The Abenaki people called the area Wantastiquet , which means ‘Lost River’, ‘River of the Lonely Way’, or ‘River that Leads West’. The town was chartered as Brattleborough in 1753 and grew up as a mill town before becoming a vibrant commerce hub.

Modern-day Brattleboro is an oasis of art galleries, music venues, boutique shopping, and farm-to-table restaurants.

We live just an hour from Brattleboro, and it’s one of our favorite spots for a weekend getaway or adventurous day trip.

Want the inside scoop? Here are some of our favorite things to do in Brattleboro VT.

Table of Contents

Explore the Shops in Downtown Brattleboro

Tierra Botanics in Brattleboro, VT.

Brattleboro’s Main Street feels like it belongs in a much larger town. There are enough distinctive shops, galleries, and restaurants within walking distance of downtown to fill multiple days of retail therapy and foodie adventures.

From the seemingly endless antique emporium, Twice Upon a Time , to smaller boutiques like the vintage clothing and apparel shop, Boomerang, Brattleboro has a veritable avalanche of options for the avid shopper.

We often spend large chunks of our time downtown in and out of two excellent bookstores just off Main Street. Everyone’s Books , which had a particularly well-curated section on history, politics, and current events, and Brattleboro Books , which boasts a massive collection of used manuscripts in every genre imaginable.

Visit Retreat Farm

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Retreat Farm (@retreatfarm)

Retreat Farm has been a mainstay in the Brattleboro community since its founding in the 1830s. Encompassing 500 acres of conserved forests, farmlands, trails, and waterways, Retreat Farm is a gathering spot for the community and an oasis of rural living.

Retreat Farm seems to offer something to appeal to any interest; from the rich history of the farm with its lovingly preserved buildings, to its commitment to environmental justice and sustainability, to the celebration of farm-to-table cuisine, and of course, all the farm animals, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Retreat Farm.

If you happen to be visiting Brattleboro on a Thursday during the summer, make sure you stop by the farm for the famous Food Truck Roundup.

This outdoor celebration of great food and music features over a dozen food and drink vendors from the Brattleboro area and a live music lineup curated by the Stone Church. It’s an event that you won’t want to miss (but be sure to leave your dogs at home).

Hike a Trail at Fort Dummer State Park

Fort Dummer State Park in Brattleboro.

Fort Dummer State Park is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Brattleboro. The park has several trail options for short day hikes, and the well-maintained campgrounds make it a great choice for visitors who want to avoid hotels and motels.

The campsites are spread out, giving campers ample privacy during their stay, and the three hiking trails are all within walking distance of the campground.

During our visit, we hiked the Sunrise Trail and the Broad Brook Trail. The Sunrise Trail was a mile loop through the woods, and was fairly flat, making it a nice relaxing walk.

The Broad Brook Trail, although a little shorter than the Sunrise Trail, was very steep and might prove challenging to novice hikers, but had a much more rewarding final destination, with the trail leading to a small picturesque swimming hole on Broad Brook.

Visit the Art Galleries

Harmony Collective Artist Gallery in Brattleboro, VT.

Downtown Brattleboro is packed with galleries where you can browse or purchase locally-made pieces.

During our recent visit, we stopped by Gallery in the Woods , which had some beautiful ceramic pieces alongside handcrafted jewelry, incredibly detailed felt animals, and a wide range of prints and original works from some of Vermont’s best contemporary artists.

We also paid a too-short visit to Harmony Collective Artist Gallery .

Harmony Collective felt more like a mini-museum, with hundreds of unique paintings hanging throughout the shop, and central displays devoted to indescribable sculptures crafted using both traditional materials like clay and paper mache, as well as used handbags, scrap metal, and recycled bottles and cans.

Although we only had the chance to explore two galleries during our recent stay, there were many more options to choose from, and you could easily spend a whole weekend in Brattleboro going in and out of different galleries.

Windham Art Gallery, The Artist’s Loft Fine Art Gallery, Vermont Artisan Designs, and Gallery in the Woods are all within walking distance of each other, and you can find even more options by venturing just a little ways off of Main Street.

Check out Brattleboro Museum & Art Center

Eric checking out an exhibit at BMAC in Brattleboro.

Located in the middle of downtown, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center , or BMAC, is an unforgettable addition to the wealth of artistry on display in Brattleboro.

The museum contains six galleries that rotate exhibits every few months, which means you can keep coming back to see new things every time you’re in town.

Admission to the museum is “pay-what-you-can”; a donation of $5-10 per person is recommended but not required.

Step Back in Time at the Creamery Covered Bridge

Summer at the Creamery Covered Bridge in Brattleboro.

Creamery Covered Bridge is another addition to Vermont’s famous catalog of covered bridges and is the only one visible from Route 9. Constructed in 1879, this bridge is now closed off to traffic but remains open to pedestrians.

Its proximity to the Brattleboro Farmer’s Market and the Vermont Country Deli makes the Creamery Covered Bridge a popular destination for tourists, and we found that the grassy area beside the bridge was the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic.

Discover the Estey Organ Museum

An organ made by Estey Organ Company in Brattleboro.

The Estey Organ Museum was one of the biggest surprises of our recent trip to Brattleboro; it’s a small museum devoted to a fairly uncommon instrument, and the fact that the museum was only open for two hours a week meant we had pretty low expectations.

However, the Estey Organ Museum ended up being one of our favorite destinations on our trip.

The museum is located inside the old factory buildings where Estey Organs were once made. The large slate buildings have since been renovated to house various businesses and apartments alongside the museum.

Inside you’ll find dozens of organs and pianos on display.

Some organs are hooked up to electric power supplies, while others require a hand crank or foot pedals to be worked in order to produce any sound. Best of all, every instrument in the building is available for visitors to play.

Getting the chance to play antique organs was an absolute blast even if we could only remember how to play Hot Cross Buns and Chopsticks.

A close-up of an organ made by Estey Organ Company in Brattleboro.

Our favorite instrument was a traditional pipe organ with an open back which allowed you to literally go inside the instrument while someone else played, creating the ultimate surround-sound experience.

If the interactive aspect of the museum wasn’t enough, there was an abundance of interesting information to discover about the history of organ making in Southern Vermont.

The staff member who was working when we visited had an encyclopedic knowledge of Brattleboro town history which gave context to the exhibits and made us want to stay for hours.

This museum is one of the best things to do in Brattleboro VT, especially if you’re into musical instruments or the history of commerce in Southern Vermont, and will be especially fun for pianists and organ players. Hours are 2-4 pm every Saturday from May through mid-October.

Check Out Live Music at Stone Church

The Stone Church in Brattleboro Vt.

The Stone Church is one of Brattleboro’s most well-known and loved destinations and it’s easy to see why.

The church was renovated to create a unique venue for performers stopping in Southern Vermont, and the gorgeous Gothic architecture creates a performance space unlike any other in Vermont.

The Stone Church has hosted music legends like Don McClean and consistently brings in talented artists from New England and beyond.

The Stone Church has live music almost every weekend, with wildly varying genres. During our visit, there were concerts featuring a folk-punk band with heavy metal influences, and a Caribbean funk duo.

The sheer number of concerts held at the Stone Church makes it pretty easy to find one that will fit your taste, but even if you’re not sure whether you’ll like the artist that’s playing while you’re in town, we still recommend checking them out; it’s a great way to explore new types of music, and the venue alone is well worth a visit.

Discover the New England Center for Circus Arts

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NE Center for Circus Arts (@neccacircus)

The New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) is an institution based around the instruction and practice of circus arts. These include acrobatics, balancing, parkour, juggling, aerials, and much more.

NECCA offers frequent performances as well as classes and workshops for adults and children. Come for the amazing displays of balance and coordination, and stay for the knowledgeable instructors and state-of-the-art facilities!

Visit the Vermont Jazz Center

Similar to the New England Center for the Circus Arts, the Vermont Jazz Center offers both training and performances.

The institution has workshops, classes, and jam sessions for all skill levels, and offers programs for both instrumental musicians and vocalists.

If you’re not a musician yourself, you can still enjoy a visit to the Jazz Center; the Center’s accurately named “Big Band” is well-known in the community for its incredible concerts.

Go Swimming in the West River at West River Park

West River Park is the perfect place to go when you need to escape the summer heat.

If you feel like doing more than just relaxing in the cool, clear water (with a sandy bottom too–water shoes are optional here!), there are some great picnic spots where you can eat while enjoying views of the river.

The park also has several short trails crisscrossing throughout, making it the perfect place for a short walk, and a long swim.

Hang out at the Brattleboro Area Farmers’ Market on Saturdays

The creperie at Brattleboro Area Farmers' Market.

The Brattleboro Area Farmers’ Market is in serious competition for the best Farmers’ Market in Vermont, and once you get there you’ll know exactly why.

If the overflowing parking lots weren’t enough of an indication of what is to come, the smells of spicy Thai food, deep-fried samosas, cheesy crepes, and savory tacos will assure you that you’re in the right place.

Besides an abundance of delicious food made with fresh ingredients, you can also pick up an assortment of beverages, from fruit smoothies that are blended to order right before your eyes, to strawberry lemonade and piping hot (or icy cold) coffee and tea.

Once you’ve made it through the gauntlet of tents selling fresh produce and serving food and drink (this took us quite a while as I wanted to eat something from just about every tent we saw), you’ll realize that you’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of what this market has to offer.

Amongst the many vendors, you can find handcrafted jewelry, alpaca wool clothing, fresh fruits and veggies, baked goods in every shape and size, Vermont-made wine and spirits, soap, candles, honey, maple syrup, and much more.

We spent almost two hours wandering around the market and I’m still convinced that we didn’t see everything, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore.

Rent a Boat from the Vermont Canoe Touring Center

Being situated right on the banks of the Connecticut River, the longest river in New England, Brattleboro has a close relationship with the water which is evident in the number of boaters you’ll see out on the river when you’re there.

If you’re feeling envious watching kayaks and canoes dip in and out of the little inlets and coves of the river, then it’s high time you joined them.

Take a trip up the road from downtown Brattleboro to visit the Vermont Canoe Touring Center where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore the waterways at your leisure.

Boats are rented in 1, 2, or 4-hour increments, or you can save yourself the trouble of needing to keep track of your time and just rent them for the entire day.

Indulge in a Craft Beer

Gabe sits near the Connecticut River with a craft beer and pretzel bits from Whetstone Station.

Like most of Vermont’s larger towns, Brattleboro has plenty of options to satisfy any beer lover. We stopped into Whetstone Station for dinner and enjoyed some fruity brews (an excellent blood orange sour and pear cider) alongside some of the best poutine I’ve ever tasted.

If you decide to visit Whetstone, be sure to check if outdoor seating is available, as the brewery is situated on the bank of the Connecticut River, offering a gorgeous and serene view while you sip your drinks.

A little way up Main Street from Whetstone you’ll find Hermit Thrush Brewery . Hermit Thrush specializes in sours, so it was right up my alley, and although we didn’t get a chance to visit the brewery itself, we picked up a delicious four-pack of their Brattlebeer, a golden sour made with apples grown in Brattleboro.

For another eatery featuring a wide selection of craft beers from all over Vermont, we recommend River Garden Marketplace . The marketplace frequently hosts live music and other interesting events, and on top of their large beer menu, they also serve great food and cocktails.

Catch a Show at Latchis Theatre

Inside the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro VT.

The Latchis Theatre is a historic movie theater and performance venue in downtown Brattleboro and is connected to the Latchis Hotel (more on that later). The building which houses both the theatre and hotel was built in 1938 in the art deco style, which was very popular at the time.

The Art Deco movement isn’t the only unique aesthetic choice on display at the Latchis; inside the theatre, you’ll find stunning Greek murals depicting mythological scenes.

The combination of classic Greek murals with Art Deco architecture is dubbed “Greco Deco” by the Latchis Theater website, and its one-of-a-kind aesthetic makes the Latchis one of those rare places that can only be fully appreciated in person.

The Latchis plays current films from popular blockbusters to smaller indie affairs and acts as a venue for live events. The space can also be rented out for private events.w

Venture Over to Madam Sherri Forest in Chesterfield, NH

Ruins at Madam Sherri Forest in Chesterfield, NH.

If you’re looking for a beautiful day hike during your visit to Brattleboro, consider paying a visit to Madam Sherri Forest, which is just a short drive across the New Hampshire border.

You’ll find several trail options to choose from with various difficulty levels. The Anne Stokes Loop Trail is a two-mile hike perfect for hikers who want a less intensive experience.

The trail features a scenic view of Indian Pond at about 0.5 miles, and also goes past the ruins of Madam Sherri’s “castle,” a crumbling stone structure reminiscent of the ancient castle ruins found across Europe.

For a more difficult hike, you can check out the Wantastiquet Mountain trail, a 3-mile round trip hike leading to a gorgeous overlook of the Connecticut River Valley with Mount Monadnock rising in the distance.

Visit Scott Farm Orchard

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scott Farm Orchard (@scottfarmvt)

Scott Farm Orchard is the ideal fall destination in Brattleboro.

During autumn, the expansive orchards overflow with enthusiastic harvesters who have come to celebrate Vermont’s state fruit and indulge in one of the Green Mountain State’s oldest and most well-loved traditions: apple picking.

The farm has two orchards each with a wide variety of apples and two kinds of peaches. During the harvest seasons, visitors can come to pick their own fruit or choose from over 130 varieties of apples at the Farm Market.

Embark on a Connecticut River Byway Road Trip

The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge over the Connecticut River.

Travel along 410 miles of the Connecticut River from one end of Vermont to the other on Vermont’s only designated National Byway.

The Connecticut River Byway is a three-state, 500-mile byway, spanning the west and east shores of the Connecticut River starting in Massachusetts and traveling north through both Vermont and New Hampshire all the way to the Canadian border.

It passes right through Brattleboro and is one of the most scenic drives in all of Vermont .

Sip Bourbon at Saxtons River Distillery

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Saxtons Distillery (@saxtonsdistillery)

Saxtons River Distillery is a nationally recognized producer of fine spirits located in Brattleboro. The distillery gained its local and national renown from its maple syrup-infused alcohols like the famous Sapling Maple Bourbon.

When we visited we opted for a bottle of barrel-aged Snowdrop Gin, and I never want to go back to any other brand.

The distillery is open to the public for tastings and dining, and you can browse their wide selection of liquor, wine, mead, and cider on their website.

Where to Stay in Brattleboro

The Latchis Hotel in the heart of downtown Brattleboro.

The Latchis Hotel ended up being the perfect place for our recent stay in Brattleboro. The Latchis Hotel also features the same Greco Deco aesthetic that we loved from the Latchis Theatre, giving it a grand historical feel.

Located right on Main Street, the hotel is within walking distance of all the best food and drink Brattleboro has to offer, although one doesn’t even need to leave the hotel to find some of the best things to do in Brattleboro.

You can visit the movie theatre connected to the hotel by its own separate entrance, or the Latchis Pub and Underground Lounge which serves food and drink late into the night.

For a budget hotel in Brattleboro, drive a minute or two outside of the downtown area and stay at the Colonial Motel and Spa . The rooms are basic but very comfy, and the indoor saltwater pool makes it feel like a more high-end vacation.

Want a posh vacation rental with historical significance? Stay at Naulakha, the former home of Rudyard Kipling and a National Historic Landmark.

Much of Kipling’s original furniture remains, which means that guests can sit at the very desk where the famed author wrote The Jungle Book, Captains Courageous, and portions of the Just So Stories.

This fully furnished three-story house makes an enchanting family getaway for a special occasion.

Awesome Brattleboro Restaurants for Your Dining Pleasure

Yallla Sababa in Brattleboro Vermont.

Yalla : This wonderfully addictive little eatery is one of the reasons I make the drive to Brattleboro over and over again. Serving Eastern Mediterranean specialties like falafel, hummus, homemade pitas, and a bunch of other delicacies. This is one lunch spot that you absolutely have to put on your Brattleboro itinerary.

Whetstone Station : For dinner, we enjoyed visiting Whetstone Brewery where you can pick up classic American pub food like burgers, hot dogs, and wings, as well Vermont favorites like poutine (yes, I know poutine is Canadian, but Vermont is as infused with Canadian culture as any US state can be, so let us have this).

A sandwich, chips, and a beer at River Garden Marketplace in Brattleboro, VT.

River Garden Marketplace : River Garden Marketplace is great for a casual drink and a snack, or a full meal. With a frequently changing menu of tasty appetizers and entrees, and an extensive selection of beer, cider, and hard seltzer, this is one spot that we keep coming back to.

Amy’s Bakery Arts Cafe : We stopped into Amy’s for lunch on a whim and discovered yet another not-so-hidden gem on Brattleboro’s Main Street. Amy’s features a relatively small menu of sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as fresh baked goods, coffee, and tea. We loved the sourdough bread they used to make their sandwiches, as well as the mountain of toppings they packed between the slices.

Check out these incredible things to do in Brattleboro VT the next time you’re passing through the southeast corner of the state. You’ll love exploring this beautiful Vermont town.

Can you elaborate on your stay at the Latchis Hotel? I’ve heard it’s very outdated. But see mostly good reviews. Saw there’s new management and they’re updating. Would love to hear more.

Tara Schatz

HI Jennifer. We loved the stay at the Latchis for it's location right in downtown Brattleboro. The bed was super comfy and we got a room with a view. I agree that some aspects are outdated (the bathroom in our room), but I think they are going for a vintage feel as there are record players in the room and antique furniture throughout. If you are looking for modern amenities, you won't find them at the Latchis, but we found it very comfortable and affordable, and loved the location. Hope that helps!

16 Top-Rated Things to Do in Brattleboro, VT

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers Updated Mar 24, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and her husband, photographer Stillman Rogers, live a few miles from Brattleboro and do most of their shopping there. They especially enjoy Brattleboro's bookstores and art galleries.

The best thing about Brattleboro is just being there. There's a relaxed, easygoing vibe that's both artsy and outdoorsy (Main Street shops testify to both these). A turn up Elliot Street will assure you that bookish is another accurate description.

Whetstone Brook in Brattleboro, Vermont

What you won't find is pretense. Flannel shirts, down jackets, hiking boots, and Birkenstocks are fashion statements here, and the best things to do in Brattleboro are to follow the locals to their favorite places: art galleries, kayaking waters, hiking and cycling trails , and one of New England's best farmers markets.

This southern Vermont town was home to the back-to-the-landers who settled here in the 1960s and '70s. Many of them stayed, and their lifestyle and progressive attitudes still show in the do-it-yourself and buy-local civic mind-set.

Tourists will find iconic Vermont attractions , too, including two covered bridges, pick-your-own apple orchards, and a premier display of stone walls. And there are one-of-a-kind things to do that you'll find only here: You can warm your hands around a cup of hot cocoa as you watch world champion ski jumpers fly through the frosty air, or perhaps you'd like to walk inside a pipe organ to see how it works.

Whatever your pleasures, you'll find plenty of places to visit with this handy list of the best things to do in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Main Street, Brattleboro

If you were to draw a picture of classic 19 th -century small town Main Street, it would look a lot like Brattleboro. Three blocks of brick mercantile buildings face each other across Vermont Route 5 as it passes through the center of town. Take time to look up and admire the decorative brickwork and notice the absence of box and chain stores.

The Main Street shops tell you a lot about Brattleboro. Within its three blocks, you'll find two bicycle stores (one of which is also a sporting goods store with snowshoes, skate-, and snowboards), Beadniks, with the largest selection of beads in New England, and a museum of antique beads downstairs.

At Sam's , a Vermont institution since the 1930s, you can shop for outdoor and practical clothing. Step inside, and you'll see that it goes on through room after room on three floors and into an adjoining building. Like Sam's, Brown and Robert Hardware seems to go on forever, with the region's best housewares center tucked into one side; you can find everything here, from cast iron skillets to Cuisinarts.

Main Street is a place to stroll, browse, shop, say hello to strangers, and stop for a bite. Stray up Elliot and Flat Streets and continue down the hill past the elegant Art Deco Latchis Hotel and Theater to find the Brattleboro Co-op and its selection of Vermont cheeses.

Get your Birkenstocks at The Shoe Tree , a flannel shirt at Sam's, grab a coffee at Mocha Joe's , or a pastry from Amy's Bakery , and you're ready to amble along Main Street.

Pottery Jack-o-lanterns at ZPOTS

As you walk down Main Street and adjoining Elliot Street, you're sure to notice the number of art galleries and shops featuring handcrafted works. On the first Friday evening of each month, more than a dozen of these stay open for a Gallery Walk from 5 until 8 or 9pm. You can visit on your own with the help of a gallery map or join a free docent-led tour.

Of course, you can visit the art galleries during business hours most days, as well, to find fine art, photography, and hand-crafted jewelry, clothing, pottery, furniture, and decorative objects.

On Main Street are Mitchel Gibbons Fine Art, Penelope Wurr, Gallery in Woods, Vermont Artisan Designs , and ZPOTS . The latter is a family-owned studio of paintings and pottery that includes tableware and decorative works.

In the autumn, look for the collection of terra-cotta jack-o-lanterns; each one is unique, and you can choose from dozens of original faces.

Brattleboro Farmers Market

In what is considered the premier farmers market in the northeast , and a popular attraction for tourists, as many as 50 vendors display their produce and handwork in a tree-shaded spot beside Whetstone Brook. In the center are picnic tables (an entire row of vendors sell ready-to-eat foods), a big sandbox full of kids, and very often a group of local musicians playing anything from Celtic jigs to bluegrass and jazz.

While the purpose was — and is — to sell vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, plants, maple syrup, honey, cheese, and other products of local farms, the market has grown into a weekly social gathering place and market for hand-crafted works. You'll find pottery, hand-spun and woven woolens, silver jewelry, fresh-baked breads, jars of farm-made preserves, handmade soaps, granola, and inlaid wood breadboards.

The market is a popular place to visit for Saturday lunch, with a choice of foods from around the world. Along with Thai favorites, you might find French crepes, Indian vegetarian dishes, French macarons, stuffed grape leaves, kimchi and dumplings, baguettes, gelato, and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Brattleboro Museum & Art Center

You'll find more works by local artists at Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, located inside the distinctive former Central Vermont & Boston & Maine Union Station building at the foot of Main Street. The non-collecting museum is dedicated to presenting rotating exhibits that not only expose the work of contemporary local artists, but provoke thought and inspire creativity.

Past exhibitions have included subjects as diverse as works representing art used for social change and the entries in an annual LEGO contest. More than 60 programs each year include classes and workshops on subjects such as wool felting, sculpture with foraged materials, transfer prints, oral history, Ukrainian Easter Eggs, and mask making.

Latchis Hotel

You can't miss the marquee of the Latchis Theater, nor the Art Deco Latchis Hotel above it. The Latchis is actually four movie theaters, three of them also used as performance spaces, so you might also find a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta or a concert by the Windham Philharmonic.

The beautifully restored main theater, which seats 750, has the largest screen in southern Vermont and all the theaters are fully accessible. In addition, audio amplification headphones, closed captioning goggles, and descriptive audio technology headphones are available free of charge.

Twice Upon a Time

The combined legacy of the back-to-the-landers and good old Yankee thrift has made Brattleboro the goal of shoppers looking for all things vintage, retro, repurposed, and second-hand. Whether it's '70s or '80s fashions or good solid furniture for an apartment, Brattleboro is the place to look.

For clothing, begin at Boomerang on Main Street, where you'll find a blend of used, vintage, and new wearables for both men and women. Mixed in with gently worn sportswear and current styles, you may find a fringed suede cowboy shirt or a Fedora hat.

Look here, too, for costume jewelry, but for the real thing, step a few doors up Main Street to Renaissance . One of New England's best collections of antique and estate jewelry may include treasures such as an Italian cameo ring, old mine cut diamonds, or a Victorian mourning pin.

Persephanie , almost hidden in a sunken doorway opposite the Latchis Theater, features an eclectic mix of vintage, upcycled, and handcrafted finds displayed with an eye for home décor.

Just off Main on Flat Street, Experienced Goods is a charity thrift shop funding the Brattleboro Area Hospice. This isn't a jumble sale; everything is clean and undamaged.

Back on Main Street, Turn it Up! Is the place to look for vintage vinyl records from the 1950s, VHS recordings, CDs, posters, and vintage memorabilia.

The largest shop, Twice Upon a Time , fills three floors of a former department store opposite Sam's, and once inside this Aladdin's cave, you'll have trouble leaving. Whether you're looking to outfit your kitchen with vintage 1940s painted-handle tools, or furnish a room in mid-century modern, you'll likely find what you want here. It's like browsing through a museum of the past century or two.

Retreat Trail

Within walking distance of Main Street is a network of 10 miles of walking trails across a wooded hillside that were built by and for the patients at the Brattleboro Retreat, a private mental health and addictions center.

You can access these from the Retreat Farm or from behind the solar field on Western Avenue, and you can plan a hike of any length or terrain by combining several loops.

For a steep climb, choose the trail up to the Retreat Tower, built by staff and patients in the 1800s. Other trails pass the Harris Hill Ski Jump and an Ice Pond that provided more than 30,000 ice blocks a year for the Retreat. Near the Western Avenue entrance is the one-mile Woodlands Interpretive Trail , with sign boards describing interesting natural features.

These trails are among the best hikes in Vermont .

Brattleboro Books

Considering that Rudyard Kipling wrote some of his best-loved works here, Saul Bellow lived here for a quarter century, and the police force was made world-famous by Archer Mayer, it's not surprising that Brattleboro is a bookish kind of place. You'll find their works and thousands more, new and used, in Brattleboro's busy bookshops.

Two of them face each other across Elliot Street, one for new books, one for used. Everyone's Books is devoted to new books in all genres and subjects, but especially strong in the environment, social action, politics, nature, food, history, and do-it-yourself. The selection of children's literature is especially good.

Brattleboro Books , across the street, is floor-to-ceiling in used books. From vintage Julia Child to the latest bestsellers that have been read once, you'll find it here. Bibliophiles and avid readers won't want to leave. The same is true of the smaller Book Lovers on Flat Street, where you'll find used books, especially strong in niche subjects that are hard to find elsewhere.

Creamery Covered Bridge

Covered Bridge fans will find two, one in Brattleboro and one just over the line into neighboring Dummerston.

Visible from Western Avenue (Route 9) just before the Brattleboro Farmers Market, Creamery Covered Bridge is a classic red bridge with a covered pedestrian walk added in the early 1900s. Built in 1879, it has been bypassed by a new bridge that carries traffic to the popular Living Memorial Park . On a nice afternoon, you might find a group of local musicians practicing inside the bridge.

Only seven miles north of town on Route 30, the 1872 West Dummerston Covered Bridge crosses over the West River. Like Creamery Bridge, it is a Town's Lattice Truss construction, but in two spans. More than three times as long as the Creamery Bridge, at 271 feet it's the longest covered bridge in Vermont that's still in use.

Drystone wall at Scott Farm

The scenic Scott Farm, with its orchards of more than 100 varieties of heirloom apples, is owned by the non-profit Landmark Trust USA, but picking or buying apples is only one reason to visit. The farm is also the training center for the Stone Trust, dedicated to the art of dry stone wall building.

These are not the walls that you'll see along roadsides and fields throughout northern New England, built by long-ago farmers to clear their fields of unwanted rocks. The walls taught here are meticulously crafted and often in ornamental patterns.

Those passing tests for Advanced or Masters certification must build examples of their work, which are incorporated into the farm landscape as the Stone Wall Park .

Stroll through the park and look into the workshop under the massive barn to see wallers at work. If the farm looks a little familiar, it was the main setting for filming Cider House Rules .

On the way to Scott Farm, you'll pass Naulakha, the home built by Rudyard Kipling and where he wrote The Jungle Book .

Retreat Farm

The picturesque farm overlooking West River was originally intended to provide food, as well as fresh air and activity for patients at the Brattleboro Retreat, a mental health hospital founded in 1834. Today the farm continues to raise animals and crops, with the mission of connecting people to the land.

Along with its historic barns (notice the siding of local slate), you can visit with the farm animals, one of the favorite things to do for families . Sign boards with historic photographs describe the work of the farm and the Retreat, and on weekends, you'll often find food trucks here, along with special programs.

Visitors with children will want to follow the half-mile Storybook Walk near the Piggery, and find the Forest Playground , or you can follow a trail through the riverside meadow filled with pollinator-friendly wildflowers.

This big dairy farm is a perfect location for the large Grafton Village Cheese shop, where you can taste samples of farmstead cheeses from all over Vermont and the world.

West River Trail

The three miles of trail beside the West River from Brattleboro to Dummerston follow the bed of the West River Railroad, a line that opened in 1879. While the narrow and winding route between the river and the steep hillside was not an easy one for trains, it is a delightful one for walkers and cyclists.

The trail is level, and the surface relatively smooth, and the fringe of trees opens up regularly for views of the river.

Begin at the Marina below Route 5, just north of the Brattleboro Common. Cyclists can continue north beyond the trail, following the road that replaced the tracks. You'll pass some of the rusting equipment from a former quarry that was served by the railroad.

Official site: www.westrivertrail.org

Jelly Mill Falls

More than a cascade, Jelly Mill Falls are a series of low ledges that form a watery staircase interspersed with shallow pools. Stickney Brook is a broad, shallow stream shaded by an arch of trees as it flows over the flat ledges, making it a good spot for a picnic. The shallow pools are safe for children to play in.

Alongside the brook are stone walls of the former mill that gave the falls their name. About 3.5 miles north of Brattleboro on Route 30, you'll see Stickney Road on the left. Just past it is a pull-off space for parking. A trail leads a few yards through the woods to the falls.

Estey Organ Museum

Organs and melodeons made in Brattleboro were once played around the world. Housed in a row of somber gray buildings (the siding on the factory buildings is made from slate), the Estey Organ Company built more than 3,000 pipe organs for churches, theaters, and auditoriums, and more than half a million reed organs. The latter were popular fixtures in fashionable parlors and smaller chapels.

The shop closed in 1960, and the museum preserves its heritage, capturing both the artistry and the musical significance of organs in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries.

If you've ever wondered how a pipe organ works, you can find out here. A 1915 pipe organ from a New Hampshire church has been modified so that visitors can walk inside and see the mechanisms hidden there.

Kayaking on West River

From a launch opposite the Retreat Farm on Route 30, you can paddle in the broad expanses of the West River just before it joins the Connecticut River. The shores of this wide expanse, known as the Retreat Meadows, are prime places to go for bird-watching, and you can paddle upstream as the river narrows somewhat.

Except in the spring runoff, the current is gentle for easy paddling as you pass beneath the striking highway bridge and between the lightly wooded banks. You can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards at the Vermont Canoe Touring Center , on Route 5.

Address: 451 Putney Road (Route 5), Brattleboro, Vermont

Harris Hill Ski Jump

The Brattleboro Outing Club , founded in 1922, is a volunteer organization that maintains more than 20 miles of cross-country trails through the forest and across fields overlooking the Connecticut River. You'll find groomed and ungroomed trails, and the club also holds evening ski tours using headlamps. There is a warming hut at the trailhead.

For a few downhill runs on an un-intimidating slope, you can't beat the $5 lift tickets at the Brattleboro Ski Hill in Living Memorial Park. A T-bar lift takes you to the top of an open slope for a half-mile gentle run. When the slope opened in 1937, it was one of only three ski areas east of the Mississippi with a lift.

To watch world champion ski jumpers, come to Brattleboro in February for the annual Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition , when champions from across the world compete for world records. Wear warm clothes and watch as skiers soar above the 90-meter hill.

Tap into Your Creative Side: 19 Things to do in Brattleboro VT

Once a mill town powered by the Whetstone Brook, Brattleboro has evolved into an inclusive arts haven budding with creatives interested in perfecting their craft. With a rejuvenated downtown and farm-to-table dining focus, this small town in Southern Vermont is perfect for those looking to pair outdoor activities with hands-on creative pursuits.

Brattleboro’s history in the arts goes back to author Rudyard Kipling penning classics like “ The Jungle Book ” nearby. Today, you will find chocolatiers and circus artists, glassblowers and ceramicists, woodworkers and photographers, visual artists and chefs. And it isn’t just a place where you can go to watch or buy, you can also get hands on and express your own creativity through a variety of workshops and classes.

As many times as I’ve stopped in Brattleboro on my Vermont road trips , it took me staying a couple of days to dig beneath the surface of what seemed like a cool but sleepy town, to see the vibrant community that lies beneath. And, this time I visited in the winter. Imagine how much more there is to do in Brattleboro in the summer or fall when the farmer’s market, food truck festivals, and outdoor recreation are in full swing!

Greetings from Brattleboro VT mural

Things to do in Brattleboro Vermont

Editor’s Note: I recently revisited Brattleboro as part of a media stay to research this article. Portions of my stay, including accommodations and meals, were complimentary. All opinions are my own.

If you are ready to get crafty or just looking for an artsy and outdoorsy weekend getaway , let me introduce you to a sampling of things to do in Brattleboro Vermont. Oh, and it is Vermont, so of course there is going to be some cheese and craft beer involved too!

Go to the Circus

New England center for the circus arts trapeze

Have you ever watched Cirque du Soleil and wished you could move like that? Or have you ever wanted to try the flying trapeze? Before you run away and join the circus, give circus arts a try at the New England Center for Circus Arts . This premiere circus training school is both a pre-professional school for those serious about careers in the circus arts, and a place where community members and visitors can come and give it a try.

You will need to check the calendar before you visit to see if there is a performance you can watch or if you will be in town during one of the Friday Flight Nights to give the flying trapeze a try. In addition to recreational classes in Chinese pole, straps, and trapeze, NECCA also offers workshops that are perfect for visitors.

If you are really interested in circus arts, you could sign up for an aerial and circus skills week, which is kind of like a full-day circus camp for adults. NECCA also offers group events and executive leadership retreats for women.

Get Fired Up

Glass blowing at Fire Arts Vermont

Fire Arts Vermont has both hot glass and clay studios, along with a gallery featuring the work of 25 local artists. It is a joint collaboration between Randi Solin, who is an award-winning master glassblower whose work is featured in the permanent collections of the White House, United States Embassies, and in the Metropolitan Museum Breuer Gallery; and Natalie Blake, who specializes in producing large public art and residential projects in sculptural tile.

The glass and clay studios are open to the public whenever the gallery is open so that you can observe the artists at work (it is fascinating!) Walking through the gallery, I started to feel guilty that I don’t have any hobbies or talents when it comes to working with my hands. But if you feel the same, you can sign up for workshops during your visit for things like beginner glass classes or “make your own” creature out of clay.

The Wheelhouse Clay Center in downtown Brattleboro also offers workshops and classes, many of which are weekly classes for residents but some are suitable for visitors too.

It’s Hammer Time

Hatchspace Brattleboro

Wood turning, carving, joining, and building — if you have ever wanted to create something out of wood, HatchSpace is your place. This community woodworking maker space offers the tools and training necessary to turn project dreams into reality. There are five shops that house tools and equipment from hand-held tools to industrial-scale machines.

While HatchSpace is primarily a member-based workspace, there are plenty of classes and workshops for those looking to try out or get better at woodworking. Check the website for offerings such as making a tiled serving tray, a sculpted stool, a French rolling pin, or charcuterie board. You can easily turn your visit to Brattleboro into a weekend of artistic workshops!

HatchSpace is co-located in the High Street and Green Building along with other creative ventures such as First Proof Press, Wheelhouse Clay Center, and the Vermont Center for Photography. In the future, they plan on offering weekend retreats, allowing visitors to sample workshops from each over the course of one to two days, including community meals and celebrations.

Also in this space you will find Gravitate Pinball, the community radio station, and Vermont table, a farm-to-table restaurant.

Take a Photo

Vermont Center for Photography gallery in Brattleboro VT

There are plenty of Instagrammable spots around Brattleboro, from the “Welcome to Brattleboro” mural to the bubbling waterfall of Whetstone Brook. But if you want to brush up your photography skills or purchase some vintage camera equipment, head to the Vermont Center for Photography . This gallery plus workshop features monthly exhibits, artists talks and workshops, plus a darkroom facility.

Art exhibit at Brattleboro Museum

The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center is a surprising find in small downtown Brattleboro. Located in a former train station, this small contemporary art museum features just five to six exhibits at a time and they rotate the exhibits three times a year, to provide a different experience each time you visit.

The shows are curated from living artists and the work is on loan rather than in a permanent collection. The exhibits tend to be a mix of famous artists and local or regional artists.

Browse the Galleries

Vermont Artisan designs gallery

If you are more an art appreciator than an artist, it should come as no surprise that Brattleboro has plenty of art galleries right in the downtown historic district. Vermont Artisan Designs has two floors of paintings and sculpture, along with a wide array of fine hand-made crafts, including glass, jewelry, pottery, wrought iron, fiber art, and more.

The Harmony Collective Artist Gallery has 31 member artists across different media all exhibited in a collaborative gallery. Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts is focused on the regional New England arts scene and features artists who consciously engage with the myriad of challenges of personal expression within their chosen medium.

A great way to explore the local galleries is on one of the Gallery Walk events or annual events like the LUV Crawl. Check the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance calendar for dates.

Snack on Artisanal Chocolate

Tavernier chocolate charcuterie

With a brand-new retail space in the heart of downtown Brattleboro, it is now easier than ever to sample the elegant, seasonally-inspired artisan confections at Tavernier Chocolates . These chocolates are locally handcrafted using traditional European techniques blended with unconventional methods that utilize locally-sourced and foraged ingredients.

These mouth-watering delights start with the finest, ethically sourced chocolate and are developed to perfection with an artistry that has been recognized nationwide. In addition to chocolate bars and truffles, you simply can’t miss the truly unique chocolate charcuterie.

Meant to pair with a wide array of cheeses, fruits, sauces and cured meats, this pâté-style, ganache brick is made from single origin Latin American chocolate and blended with Vermont cheeses, raw honey and tree syrups. It is unlike anything you have experienced and sure to be the star of your next party.

Sip a Local Craft Cocktail

Espresso martini at Saxtons Distillery

It isn’t all about art in Brattleboro, you can also enjoy local craft spirits and beer. Saxtons Distillery started 18 years ago by creating a maple liqueur, in the style of founder Christian Stromberg’s Lithuanian ancestral traditions of flavored liqueurs. Today, Saxtons has three brands: Sapling, which uses maple syrup from local farms to create flavored bourbons, rye, and liqueur; Snowdrop, which uses both local and exotic herbs and botanicals to create vodka and gin; and Perc, which uses ethically-sourced Peruvian coffee beans from a local roaster to create a coffee liqueur that has become popular for espresso martinis.

You can find Saxtons’ products throughout New England, but while you are in town, stop in to the distillery for a tasting and cocktail and enjoy the spacious tasting room or outdoor picnic area with a stage for live music. While in Brattleboro, you may also visit Saxtons at the downtown tasting room and shop.

Taste Local Beer

Beer flight at Whetstone Beer Co

You can follow the Southern Vermont Beer Trail straight to Brattleboro. Whetstone Beer Co . offers a wide range of craft beer and seasonal specialties including Pale Ales, IPAs, Porters, Ambers, and Brown Ales. Sample a flight while overlooking the river and munching on some small bites or lunch.

If you love sours, like I do, be sure to stop at Hermit Thrush Brewery because they focus exclusively on sour beers. There is even a sour IPA (Green SIPA) and collaborations with other Vermont breweries such as Magic Hat and Lawson’s to create co-branded sours.

Shop the Boutiques

brattleboro vt tourism

Downtown Brattleboro isn’t large, but you can still spend some time browsing the various boutiques. If you are into antiques, Twice Upon a Time offers a treasure trove of antiques and collectibles at this multi-dealer and consignment ship with an array of furniture, collectibles, vintage clothing, china, musical instruments, and more. Beadniks is a lovely store dedicated to beads, rocks, crystals, artisan-made jewelry, and retro toys.

Cara Wolff Jewelry features handmade jewelry from natural and repurposed materials, inspired by natural beauty, from a metalsmith and wildlife biologist. Book lovers can check out Everyone’s Books , a local independent bookstore and Brattleboro Books , which is a used book store.

Sample Vermont Cheese

Grafton Village Cheese Company

Grafton Village Cheese Company , just north of town and next to the Retreat Farm, may just be my favorite cheese shop in the world since I stop there every time I visit Vermont. One of Vermont’s legacy cheesemakers, Grafton Village Cheese creates award-winning, naturally aged and naturally flavored cheeses. You can taste their cheese, along with dozens of others they offer in the shop. The shop is also stocked with Vermont products, charcuterie, and local beers.

Take a Hike

Bench on West River trail

Brattleboro isn’t just about the art. I mean, it is Vermont after all. You have to spend some time in the great outdoors. The Retreat Farm plays a central part in the Brattleboro community. Located on traditional Abenaki homelands, the Farm encompasses 500 acres of conserved forests, farmlands, and waterways, along with miles of hiking trails. They also host community events including the summer Food Truck round-up and live outdoor music events.

You can also enjoy the 3.5 mile West River Trail with views of the river and the golden Vermont hills. You will also see where the trail bed was cut from rock to build the railroad in 1879, one of Vermont’s oldest transportation routes.

Visit a Maple Sugar Farm

The Robb Family Farm was established in 1907 and is still family run. This former dairy farm has been focusing on maple syrup production since 2011. Today, they are happy to show you around, tell you all about maple syrup, and you can stock up on all sorts of maple sugar products.

Stroll the Brattleboro Farmers’ Market

The  Brattleboro Area Farmers’ Market  is southern VT’s premier farmers’ market featuring over 50 agricultural, craft, and food vendors. It wasn’t in season when I was last in town, but the market happens every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from May to October.

Watch a Movie

The Latchis Theatre is a 1930s Greco Deco member of the League of Historic American Theaters. Movie goers have been watching films there since the days of vaudeville and silent films. Today, you can still watch a movie at the Latchis from indies to cinema classics.

Enjoy Live Music

There are a couple of spot to catch live music in Brattleboro. The Latchis Pub and Underground Lounge has karaoke night on Thursdays and live performers on many weekends. The Stone Church is located in a renovated Victorian Gothic church and features a full calendar of live music and events.

Eat Apple Cider Donuts

If you visit in the fall, be sure to stop by Scott Farm Orchard for some fresh cider, cider donuts, and pick your own apples. This is also home to Stone Wall Park, featuring master stone walls created by craftspeople of the Stone Trust (and yes, they also offer workshops for stone masons!)

Scott Farm Orchard is also used for events and you can rent out one of the five overnight rental properties that are maintained by the Landmark Trust USA. This even includes Naulakha, Rudyard Kipling’s 1892 home and where he wrote The Jungle Book .

Hit the Trails

The Brattleboro Outing Club offers four recreation programs including tennis, rowing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, and paddling. The organization maintains 33 km of groomed trails as snow and weather conditions warrant.

Take a Sleigh Ride

Fair Winds Farm offers seasonal sleigh rides and hayrides, either private or group rides through the woods and fields.

Where to Eat in Brattleboro

For a small town, Brattleboro offers a wide range of dining options for various budgets and tastes, from the pub grub at Whetstone Station to fine dining at Peter Havens, Mediterranean specialties at Yalla Vermont to on-the-go options at the Brattleboro Food Coop. Here are a few to check out during your stay:

Coffee Shops

If you need a pick me up, Mocha Joe’s serves up specialty grade locally roasted coffee, which is roasted fresh just down the street. Coffee lovers can also stop into the Latina-owned Duchess Coffee for a taste of her modern espresso blend.

Guilford Country Store and Cafe

Guilford Country Store tables in cafe

Located just south of downtown Brattleboro, the Guilford Country Store and Cafe is a local hangout. This cozy historic building is part country store, part coffee shop and deli serving up delicious sandwiches, tempting baked goods, breakfast options, and fresh coffee.

Whetstone Station

Combine your beer tasting with lunch (or dinner) at Whetstone Station . This brewery restaurant serves up award winning fries and burgers, along with healthy vegetarian and gluten free options. On a nice day, grab a table on the terraces overlooking the Connecticut River for a meal with a water view.

River Garden Marketplace

Brattleboro river garden marketplace

The River Garden Marketplace combines food, craft beer, entertainment, and a craft market under one glass roof. The Marketplace also serves as an event space and has both indoor and outdoor seating, which overlooks Whetstone Brook. This is perfect for a casual lunch or drinks.

The Oyster Bar at Peter Havens

Just around the corner from the Oyster Bar, Peter Havens is a full-service, fine dining restaurant, which is perfect for a date night or special evening. As you may expect, the menu features an array of fresh seafood, but also American classics like a New York strip steak or Long Island duck breast. There are even creative options for vegetarians such as the heart of palm cake starter, which is like a crab cake but uses heart of palm.

Where to Stay in Brattleboro

brattleboro vt tourism

If you are looking for a classic Vermont experience, stay at the charming Inn on Putney Road . This French Baronial style, six room bed and breakfast is perfectly situated next to the West River and miles of walking trails, while also being only a five-minute walk from downtown Brattleboro.

Each room is uniquely appointed, with four rooms and suites in the main inn and two additional in the carriage house. brattleboro vt tourism

Brattleboro is a town of 12,000 people in southern Vermont . From points south, it will most likely be the place for travelers to begin their exploration of Vermont.

Understand [ edit ]

As a Connecticut River town in southern Vermont, Brattleboro benefited greatly from the easy availability of water and water power, and thus has been a prosperous town since the 18th and 19th centuries, as shown by the extraordinary collection of beautiful buildings in various styles that survive from those days and the first few decades of the 20th century. Only a very small selection of them are shown in this article.

Get around [ edit ]

For getting around the center of town, all you should need are your feet. Amble around the streets, stop at some shops, and just take your time. For getting out the town, a car would be the best way to go. Be aware that traffic in downtown Brattleboro can resemble that found in cities orders of magnitude larger, in part due to a long term construction project on I-91 that causes people to leave the highway, but more due to all the major streets feeding into Main St in the center of town. Driving within the center should be avoided and parking all day is quite cheap (under $10). If you are in the mood, though, rent a bike at the Brattleboro Bicycle Shop located downtown at 165 Main St.

  • Gallery Walk . The first Friday of each month from 5:30PM-8:30PM. Shops and galleries are open and people come to see the sights. A good way to get a feel for the locals. See the fashion show at Twice Upon a Time, a local consignment shop.

  • 42.851598 -72.560071 1 McNeill's Brewery , 90 Eliot Street ( The bar is to the left of Kipling's and across from the fire station. ), ☏ +1 802-254-2553 . Opens at 2PM on the weekends, open until it's closed . A full service drinking establishment located in downtown Brattleboro on Elliot Street in an old firehouse that is across the street from the actual firehouse. As for the full service concept, McNeill's provides glasses and will even pour beer into your glass for you for a small charge. They can also put beer in a growler for you (a deal at 10 bones with refills for just 8). They also have some pub food that is better than just edible. And darts. And that game with a ring on a string that you swing and catch on a hook, which is surprisingly difficult even before a few beers. If it's possible to have a "dive brewery," this is it. Cash Only. ( updated Oct 2016 )
  • 42.851654 -72.559971 2 Kipling's Restaurant & Pub ( Kipling's ), 78 Elliot St ( between McNeill's Brewery and the entrance to the parking garage ), ☏ +1 802 257-4848 . afternoon - last call . Kipling's has standard pub food and a decent selection of beer. A nice place to stop and get a beer, hang out with friends, etc. Kipling's isn't as trendy as Flat Street Brew Pub and lacks the character and charm of McNeill's, but Kipling's make up for that by being the warmest, friendliest, and most "down-to-earth" bar in Brattleboro. The waitress is really nice too. Cash only. ( updated Oct 2016 )

The Brattleboro Words Trail

Discovering ‘print town’ on the brattleboro words trail.

By Meg McIntyre Story originally published in Seven Days on 03|01|2022.

From the vantage point of Brattleboro’s tiny Pliny Park, history is all around.

To the right across High Street stands the 1871 Brooks House, a former hotel and favorite destination of 19th- and 20th-century literary figures such as Rudyard Kipling, author of  The Jungle Book , who lived for a time in nearby Dummerston. Across Main Street, the American Building, now dotted with shops and restaurants, once housed the  Brattleboro Reformer , the Vermont Printing Company and the Stephen Daye Press. To the left, you can see the former site of the town hall, where African American abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass delivered his first speech about President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1866.

These are just a few of the locales highlighted on the Brattleboro Words Trail, a collaborative research project celebrating southeastern Vermont’s rich literary past and present. With more than 90 destinations featuring dynamic audio narrations — and more being added all the time — the tour takes residents and visitors on a journey through the region’s long-standing love affair with words.

“My appreciation of this place has increased a hundredfold since beginning this work, because every building, every street, every hill — it’s filled with these stories for me now,” trail cofounder and producer Lissa Weinmann said.

The project began in 2017, when several local organizations, including the Brattleboro Literary Festival, the Brooks Memorial Library, the Brattleboro Historical Society, Write Action and the now-shuttered Marlboro College, joined forces to apply for a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

After months of community engagement and many more of research and audio production, the project released dozens of audio segments in December 2020. They cover not just Brattleboro but the surrounding region, from Grafton to Dover to Colrain, Mass. The audio stories are accessible online or via a downloadable app, but visitors can also pick up a printed map at sites along the trail and read the companion book,  Print Town: Brattleboro’s Legacy of Words .

Whether you peruse the downtown sites or venture farther afield, an afternoon on the trail makes for a stimulating spring outing. Some of the subjects are well known locally and beyond. Saul Bellow, for instance, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976, spent much of his later life in the area and is buried in Brattleboro’s Jewish cemetery.

Other subjects are figures whose legacies have not received their due, including Lucy Terry Prince, the first known African American poet. You can visit the land where Prince and her husband, Abijah Prince, settled in Guilford in 1764 and opened their home as a gathering place for freed and enslaved Black people. Her only surviving poem, “Bars Fight,” chronicles a violent massacre that occurred in Deerfield, Mass., in 1746, when Prince was still enslaved there.

For Sandy Rouse, cofounder and director of the Brattleboro Literary Festival, a favorite discovery during the research process was the work of writer Mary Wilkins Freeman. Freeman’s poems and short stories were published in the  Vermont Phoenix  and a slew of children’s magazines. One 1891 story, “The Revolt of ‘Mother,’” recounts the frustrations of a rural New England woman whose husband has neglected the construction of their family home in favor of other projects. In retaliation, she moves herself and her children into the barn he’s building instead.

The author’s father owned a dry goods store on Brattleboro’s Main Street in the current site of a jewelry store.

“I’d love to see her get popular again, because she’s a lot of fun,” Rouse said of Freeman.

Weinmann noted that one goal of the project is to “reflect the community back on itself” by elevating stories that aren’t widely known. The Brattleboro Words Trail highlights the history of the Abenaki, Indigenous people who have inhabited the area for centuries, with segments on ancient petroglyphs preserved in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls. There’s also a historic marker memorializing William Apess, author of the first Native American autobiography, which was published in 1829.

The trail’s sites take concrete form in a series of ceramic maps created by local artist Cynthia Parker-Houghton. Currently on display at the gallery 118 Elliot, they feature the names of local landmarks in Wabanaki as well as English.

“Part of the intention is to really create what we consider a deep mapping of our community — empowering people to tell these stories, helping people who might not ever really think of telling a story like this to do the research [and] source primary materials at different historical societies,” Weinmann said. “It’s all based in this philosophy of  Who gets to tell the stories ?”

The effort has been driven by artists and writers who call Brattleboro home today. Stephanie Greene, a local writer and organizer with the Brattleboro Literary Festival, researched and produced a segment about her parents’ publishing company, the Stephen Greene Press, which released regional and nonfiction titles for more than 20 years, starting in 1957. Her two sons, Isaac and Graham Brooks, voiced the narration, making it a multigenerational affair.

At the heart of the project is the question of what has attracted so many literary-minded folks to the region over the centuries.

“Why is Brattleboro so unique? What are the elements from the landscape, the land, that have led us to where we are now, an extraordinarily creative place?” Weinmann asked. “At the same time, we also believe that any town can trace its history of words and will find interesting artifacts and stories therein.”

One theory is that Brattleboro’s location at the confluence of the Connecticut and West rivers positioned the town to thrive in the printing industry. Weinmann explained that the purity of the water supply was ideal for producing highly reflective, high-quality paper, and a number of paper mills popped up as a result. The town’s proximity to New York and Boston has also made it a perennial destination for artists, writers and creatives.

The pristine waters drew famous visitors such as poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe to the region. Both traveled to Brattleboro in the mid-19th century to test the healing properties of the Wesselhoeft Water Cure, a natural spring that still bubbles up in the basement of the fire department on Elliot Street. Stowe sought treatment for the “melancholia” that plagued her after several consecutive pregnancies and the death of her brother.

“And she stayed and stayed and stayed, and her husband, who was taking care of all the children, including the newborn, kept writing her letters saying, ‘Honey, when are you coming back?’” Greene recounted. “She was at the water cure for nine months and then finally went home and within three years had published  Uncle Tom’s Cabin .”

Starting in March, organizers plan to add markers to the downtown segment of the trail, which will allow walkers to scan a QR code that automatically pulls up that location’s audio story. Soon, the trail will also greet travelers visiting Brattleboro by train. The ceramic map murals created during the project will adorn the side of the town’s new Amtrak station, construction of which is scheduled to break ground this spring.

In 2021, the Vermont Historical Society honored the Brattleboro Words Trail with the Richard O. Hathaway Award for best historical project. Organizers hope its success will inspire other communities to trace their own literary lineages.

“The more you learn about the history of the town,” Rouse said, “the more you learn about what makes it great.”
