Explore the Butchart Gardens

Perhaps one of the most popular attractions in Victoria is the Butchart Gardens.  What started as Jennie Butchart’s attempt to beautify the limestone quarry left by her husband’s concrete business is now recognized as one of the top ten public gardens in the world. With 55 acres of unique and equally mesmerizing gardens, be sure your camera is fully charged, as you are going to need it to capture the over 900 varieties of plants.

The original, and probably most photographed garden, is the Sunken Garden. You will be able to grab some amazing photos from the lookout point. In the early 1900’s, the Butchart’s expanded the gardens by adding the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden, and the Rose Garden.

The Japanese Garden, complete with sharply manicured greenery and calming waterways, offers a tranquil vibe. The Italian Garden, originally the Butchart’s tennis court, is defined by its unique arches and ponds. The Rose Garden, located near the Concert Lawn, is a circular path in the middle of the gardens teeming with many rose varietals.

In addition to the flora itself, there are many amazing fountains, a carousel, summer concerts, and summer fireworks also on the grounds. Even though it says 90 minutes is the average time spent at the gardens, we would recommend more if you want to fully appreciate all that this attraction has to offer.

Of note, our cruise ship did not arrive until 6 pm during our September visit , so we felt like we were in a race against the setting sun. We would recommend a day time visit to the Butchart Gardens if your time in port allows.

Just a quick question on the hop on and off bus tours. When you look on the cruiseline websites, they list these as 2 hours or 2.5 hours, but our ship will be docked from 1 PM until midnight. Is your pass just for 2 hours or is your pass good for the entire day and we would be free to take our time?

Thanks to its abundant rainfall, Ketchikan is surrounded by some of the world's most lush wilderness. Its Tlingit Indian name, Kach Khanna, means "spread wings of the eagle." Chances are you'll see one of these magnificent birds perched atop a Sitka tree during your Alaska cruise to Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

Juneau has been called “ Alaska's peak experience,” certainly due in part to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Kayak up one of the area's many protected waterways, go flightseeing, tour historic downtown or try your hand at panning for gold. The majestic Mendenhall Glacier lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau, a treck worthwhile.

In a single year from 1896 to 1897, this remote town along the Inside Passage grew from a few tents to a city of 20,000 gold seekers. Today, travellers come in search of other riches - to experience yesteryear along Skagway's charming boardwalk lined with buildings that replicate those Gold Rush days.

Venture “where the north wind doesn’t blow.” Known for this famous saying, Icy Strait Point is the ideal landing spot for adventurers seeking a new experience. Breathtaking and exciting, Icy Strait Point truly takes you where the wild things are. It’s one of the few places in the world where wildlife outnumbers the human population. A trip here certainly satisfies your taste for adventure. Take a cruise from Icy Strait Point and enjoy Alaska's awe-inspiring scenery and the many excursion options that Norwegian Cruise Line has to offer.

The Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. Its awe-inspiring, turquoise-coloured face towers nearly 400 feet tall - 250 feet of which are underwater - whilst its icebergs are often three or four stories high. At nearly six miles wide where the ice meets the ocean and 76 miles long, viewing this massive glacial mass is an experience not soon forgotten. As you cruise near the glacier, keep an eye out for the region's rich variety of wildlife, from bald eagles to harbour seals, orcas and humpback whales.

Although situated only approximately 60 miles from Anchorage, Whittier feels a world away. This small, secluded town - only accessible by land via the two-mile long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel - is nestled between soaring mountain peaks and the Passage Canal. Having been originally founded as a military facility during World War II, today, Whittier is your gateway to the famous Prince William Sound. The spectacular rugged coastlines and waterways are home to abundant wildlife, including bears, mountain goats, Dall sheep, whales, sea lions, otters and much more. Unleash your inner explorer on one of the many outdoor activities or enjoy a scenic boat tour along a portion of the sound.
