How to Arrange Your Bromo Tour (The Complete Guide)

' src=

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park offers some of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Indonesia. It is especially beautiful at sunrise as the mist rolls over the valley and the sun rises behind Bromo Volcano. However, arranging a Bromo Tour can be surprisingly difficult. It’s easy to get over charged, stay in the wrong place or make a silly mistake (like not bring a warm coat).

To help you arrange your Bromo trip I created this short guide. The guide covers everything you need to know to arrange a Bromo tour. The guide has been broken down into easy to navigate sections. You can click the link to jump directly to a certain part of the Bromo Tour Guide.

  • Jeep Rental: Find Out More
  • Bromo Tour: Find Out More

Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

When you visit Bromo you can stay in one of the following three cities; Malang, Surabaya or Probolinggo. Surabaya is the furthest away from Bromo. It is a 90 minute car drive from Surabaya to Mt Bromo. Malang is a little closer. It is a 60 minute car drive from Malang to Mount Bromo. Probolinggo actually overlooks Mount Bromo.

The 3 Mount Bromo Tours

From surabaya: bromo midnight tour.

If you decide to book a hotel in Surabaya you will join the Bromo Midnight tour. The reason it’s called the Surabaya to Bromo midnight tour package is because you get picked up from your hotel at midnight. From Surabaya you will be driven directly to Bromo for sunrise.

From Malang: Bromo Sunrise Tour

The Bromo Sunrise Tour is for people who are staying in Malang (which is closer to Bromo). The driver of your car will pick you up from your hotel in Malang at 3:30am. It’s a one hour and forty minute to 2,5 hours from Malang to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park at night. During the day it is around 3-3,5 hours journey. To actually visit Bromo you need to swap cars, because only members of the local community can drive the jeeps you need to take to visit the volcano.

From Probolinggo: Bromo Probolinggo Tour

The Bromo Probolinggo tour is the most convenient of the three options. The hotels in Problinggo actually overlook Mt Bromo volcano. If you are staying in Probolinggo then you have the option of either walking to the Penanjakan viewpoint or renting a jeep to take you there. It’s a 3 hour walk from Probolinggo to Penanjakan, which means that you will need to set off at approximately 1:00 am – 2:00 am to reach the viewpoint for sunrise (the walk is almost all uphill).

Visiting Savana Hill. It’s a beautiful green landscape in the wet season.

Mount Bromo Entrance Fee

There is an entrance fee to enter Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. For Indonesians the price for entrance to the national park is at around Rp30,000 per person. For foreigners there are two price prices. On weekdays the price for the entrance ticket is at around Rp 240,000. On weekends and Indonesian public holidays the cost is at around Rp 340,000.

Jeep Rental

To take the Bromo tour you will need to arrange a jeep rental. There are two different tours you can choose from, the short tour and the long tour. On the short tour you will visit Penanjakan Viewpoint to watch sunrise and climb Mount Bromo Volcano, before returning to your hotel/ driver.

If you go on the long tour you will go to Savana Hill and Whispering Sands (Sea Sands). You can arrange a jeep rental on arrival in Bromo, but it is more convenient and cheaper to pre-book the jeep. All of the jeep rentals at Bromo are pretty much the same model. A Bromo jeep rental can fit up to five passengers. The price for a Bromo jeep rental changes according to the tourist season. See the table below for more information on jeep rental prices.

Mt Bromo Tour

If you take either the Bromo Mindnight or Bromo Sunrise tours you will need to change cars to a jeep to get to Penanjakan. If you are staying in the Bromo National Park area the jeep will pick you up at your hotel. Penanjakan does get really crowded for sunrise. There will be a big crowd. For the best experience visit on a weekday, because it’s not as packed and it’s also cheaper (it’s still quite busy though).

Whichever tour you take, the first place you will stop is Penanjakan viewpoint (or other viewpoints such as King Kong Hill, Cinta Hill, etc). This is where you will watch sunrise from (it’s where everybody takes those beautiful photos that Bromo is so famous for). There’s a perfect 15 minutes or so to take some amazing photos and then it’s over for another day. Those 15 minutes are worth waking up really early in the morning for.

Climbing Bromo

After sunrise the jeep will take you to Bromo crater. It is a 25-minute car drive from Penanjakan to the crater. The jeep will drop you off on the dusty valley floor. From there it’s a relaxing 30-minute walk to the crater. If you have children, or you just want to do something different, you can ride a horse to the crater.

It is an easy climb to the top of Bromo crater. On the final part of the climb there are concrete stairs dug into the side of the crater. From the top of Mount Bromo you can look inside the crater, which is normally smoking. Many locals throw offerings into the crater. The view from the top are really beautiful. If you are on the short tour the driver will take you back to your hotel after climbing Mt Bromo.

The rugged landscape of Whispering Sands.

The Long Bromo Jeep Tour

After you’ve climbed the volcano you will visit the Tengger Sea Sands and the Savanna Hill.  This part of the tour takes around an hour. During the tour you can ask the driver to stop so you can take some photos. The landscape is really impressive. At the Tengger Sand Sea you see the volcanic sand. This area is popular for people who do off road motocross.

In the Savannah area you are surrounded by an island of green (or brown-ish if it is dry season). The visit to these two places is a real chance to see the contrasts in the landscape of Mount Bromo. On the tour of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park you’re guaranteed to take beautiful photos that you’ll want to share with your family and friends.

Arranging a Bromo Tour

The Bromo tour is really special. The view of the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. You can probably understand why I tell all my friends they have to join this tour if they visit Surabaya or Malang or Probolinggo. To help you arrange a tour without the usual hassle I’ve partnered with some local independent drivers and we can take care everything.

Here’s What’s Included in the Package:

  • Pick up from your hotel or the train station/ airport
  • Transport in a comfortable car
  • Experienced local driver
  • Entrance costs for Bromo
  • Drop off at your hotel

FYI Bromo is an active volcano. We do monitor the volcanic activity at the crater. Sometimes people are not allowed to visit the crater when the authorities request the visitors to be 1-3 km away from the crater. You can still enjoy the amazing landscape of Bromo.

I just discovered Mt Bromo while researching for inspiring weekend getaway from Brunei. There is a direct flight to Surabaya from here and I am so tempted to see Mt Bromo. Your article convinced me to visit, but the flock of tourists may change my feeling about visiting. Just want to compliment on your article 🙂

Hi Emily, Thank you for your kind words and the visit to my blog. You should go to Bromo. 🙂 Promise that you will not regret. :p It is pretty amazing!

Great articles! Very inspiring. What is the best way to get from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or Probolinggo? We are leaving in one week to Indonesia 🙂 I’m very excited.

Kind regards, Ayla

Hi Ayla. Thanks for the kind feedback. I’d recommend taking the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or alternatively the plane. It really depends on your timetable and budget. If you haven’t done the train before I think it’s worth it though 🙂 Hope that helps.

Thanks for your information. Can you please email me a package for a midnight tour from Surabaya airport?

Hi Anton, We sent you an email on Sept 22. Please let me know if you receive the email ok. Look forward to hearing back from you, Anton.

Can you help me with the tour, i fly from Jog to Surabaya and from Suryabaya i intend to stay at Malang so i can avoid the midnight ride to Bromo, can you help me with best way to get to Malang frm Suryabaya airport. i would like you to help me stay and a tour for Bromo as well, from here i intend to flyout to Bali. appreciate your help

Though on the google maps you can go to Bromo through Wonokitri / Poncokusumo, but it is not the usual route. I personally never tried it. I always go through Probolinggo, this means it takes 3-4 hours drive from Malang to Bromo. From Surabaya to Bromo is 4-5 hours. The best way to travel from Surabaya to Malang is by rent a private car. If you don’t want to do anything in Malang, it is better to go straight from Surabaya to Bromo. When is your travel date? Please get in touch with us through email: [email protected] . Thank you.

Hye Firsta..ur article is very helpful for me to plan my trip to Bromo next April 2018. Im looking forward to experience milky way in Bromo..heard the view was awesome!! Can u give any tips on combining the milky way session with sunrise?will be reaching at Juanda Airport airport around 5:55p.m. Is the camping site at Bromo being recommended anyway?and if it yes, any suggestion on how to rent it for a night?

Hi Sue, I don’t have the experience of camping in Bromo so I don’t know if they have a campsite around the area. My suggestion is to stay overnight at Lava View Lodge, it is one of the best lodges in Bromo in regards to location. From in front of the lodge, you can see the Bromo volcano, Mount Batok, etc. The view is something like this (I took this shot). You can come out from the hotel around 10-11 pm or 1 AM to see the milky way. You can get some rest afterwards and start the sunrise tour with the jeep at 3:30 AM. Hope this helps. If you are interested in arranging the tour with us, complete the form closer to your travel date (1,5 months before is sufficient). Have a good day!

Thanks Firsta for your prompt reply.. the shot is so beautiful!!!

Thanks Sue!

Hello, I am a KITAS holder and i really want to go to brom from surabaya. I have asked to a travel agent and they said I have to pay for bule price for this year (2019). I always have local price in Indonesia (borobudur, bali, komodo island). Is this thing true?

Hi Elizabeth, Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I think started from 2016 or 2017, you can’t get a local price with Kitas anymore.

Hey Firsta, my girlfriend and I have just arrived to an airbnb in Malang and we are looking for a genuine driver willing to take us to either one of these Bromo tours or to a bromo tour followed by Tumpak Sewu. Do you have anyone honest to recommend as most drivers start throwing the randomest numbers out there thinking that we “bule” produce money out of our ass ? And it’s definitely not the case. Please help ???

Hi Benjamin, Riri sent you an email a few days ago, but I think its probably too late. Hope you had a great time in Indonesia.

Dear Firsta,,

Apa khabar, saya physically disabled (using elbow crutches). Is it possible for me to enjoy Mount Bromo trip ?

Hi Rosli, I think it should be fine. The journey to the crater will be challenging. You can take a horse, but you need to hike some stairs. Bromo is also nice to see from afar (from the viewpoint or several points around the sea sands and the savannah, which you don’t need to hike to reach). Take care!

Superb Java Bali Tours: Private Tour

The itinerary was great and covered most of the worth doing sight seeing I would have preferred to have included the Merapi tour which we managed to do because of our guide who pointed it out to us. I didn’t enjoy the Ijen experience. I did not know what to expect and it was my worst experience of being frozen due to inadequate clothing( something the tourists need to be warned about) and also the exaggeration of the blue light. It was nothing like the photos and quite a dangerous expedition to walk up and then down into the crater in the dark. Again advice should be given to carry torches for people who are keen to go. I did take the chair which cost me quite a lot but well deserved by the people who took me up but a complete waste of time and money. The Jiwa Jawa hotel in Mount Bromo unfortunately was not the greatest. The bathroom was tiny and I could barely squeeze in (I am only a size 12 London size) so you can imagine the discomfort for someone larger. The bathroom had a bad smell and the room was very basic. The surroundings were nice and facilities adequate I would re think about accommodation in that hotel unless there are better rooms. Every thing else about the trip was great and thoroughly enjoyed. As far as including meals are concerned I would hold back as the allowance was not even enough to cover my meal and I have quite a small appetite. The fare was basic with a main meal and dessert .

We explored and enjoyed this amazing country in 2 weeks. We got to see every aspect of Indonesia both the well-known areas but also the lesser known, off the beaten track. We were impressed with the guide his knowledge and passion shone through continuously. We were engaged and immersed in this cultural experience.

Symphony of Indonesia, Private Tour Tour

Symphony of Indonesia, Private Tour

Our trip was 19 days progressing from East half of Java, Bali, Flores Island and Komodo Park. Car travel time/distances were extensive through Java (some 6-9 hours) with slow/erratic traffic. Our time in Java was rushed and too intensive. Sites were very distanced between stops. Bali was much more interesting and culturally vibrant. Tour guides not very punctual. Flores/Komodo park and 3-day boat excursion was fascinating! Sea life/coral Is one-of-a-kind and amazing! Manta Rays, dolphins; more impressive than the greatest zoo aquarium you will ever see. English communication with hosts was rough. Our 15meter boat ran aground a coral reef on the last evening and we were left stranded overnight with no propeller. Slightly concerning! Keep in mind, if you’re fair-skinned, expect to burn. Mosquitoes too. Nice trip with a good variety of activity, with rough, inconsistent planning and a few unforeseen complications. We still enjoyed.

The tour was as well organised, and run by a very capable tour leader as one has come to expect from Intrepid.
overall a really cool trip. One thing I'd change is day trains to night trains, because we could've been doing some other stuff during those 2 days of simply sitting on our bums :P

When to Hike to Mount Bromo Volcano?

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

Java is a popular destination all year round!  But the best time to visit Mt Bromo is during the dry season, from May to October.

How to visit Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour

We wanted to make the most of our visit to Bromo Volcano, so we booked a sunrise tour from Malang for the next day. We checked into a hotel where we could sleep for a few hours before the hike. Then, at midnight, we started our tour.

Once you arrive at the jeep parking lot, you can walk to the Penanjakan Bromo viewpoint, where most people watch the sunrise.

But if you want to get the most epic views of Mt Bromo, we recommend hiking up King Kong Hill. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the summit, depending on your fitness level.

Good to know If you are coming from Probolinggo, you will arrive at Seruni Point, and from there, it is much longer (30-40 minutes) and more difficult to climb to King Kong Hill.

Mount Bromo Sunrise tour

At sunrise, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the 5 volcanoes: Gunung Bromo, Gunung Batok, Gunung Kursi, Gunung Watangan, and Gunung Widodaren. In the background, you can also see the highest peak in Java, Mount Semeru.

Unfortunately, the weather was foggy when we visited! But it was still a fantastic experience to see the beautiful view.

At sunrise at Bromo Volcano, the temperature will be between 5 to 10 °C, and in windy weather, it will be even colder. But the weather gets warm quickly after sunrise, so use sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

TIP Use our map to find the best sunrise viewpoints.

Mt Bromo Crater Rim Hike

After watching the sunrise, we hiked back to the parking lot. Then we went by jeep to the Pura Luhur Poten temple at the foot of Mount Bromo. Although tourists are not allowed inside the temple, you can take some pictures from outside.

The jeeps, sand sea, and horse riders offer fantastic photo opportunities.

Then, after you’ve taken enough photos, walk to the crater entrance through the sea of sand, which is about 20-30 minutes away! We do not recommend riding horses!

As small sand storms may happen, you should wear sunglasses and a light scarf to protect your eyes and mouth.

bromo indonesia tour

The last part of the hike is a 10-minute climb up the steep concrete stairs to the top of the crater. You can do a crater rim walk, but it’s good to know there are few railings, so be careful and stay within the safety area!

Mount Bromo is not the highest peak in Indonesia, but it is an active volcano at 2329 meters above sea level.

Sometimes, it is not allowed to do crater rim walk due to volcanic activity. Unfortunately, it was forbidden at the time of our visit!

You can also visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall on the way to Malang after Mount Bromo. The entrance fee to Coban Pelangi waterfall is 15,000 IDR (1 USD).

Air Terjun Coban Pelangi can be visited daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Mount Bromo vs Mount Ijen

One of the most frequently asked questions is which should I visit: Mount Bromo or Mount Ijen? Both volcanoes are located in East Java, Indonesia.

The Bromo volcano tour is more popular than the Kawah Ijen. But make the most of your visit and see the volcanoes on a 3-day tour of Bromo and Ijen.

If you have limited time in Indonesia or are looking for a less challenging hike in Java, we recommend Bromo Volcano.

We think both volcanoes are worth a visit, and you can easily book an organized tour from Bali, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, or Probolinggo that visits both places.

TIP Make the most of your experience by visiting the Ijen and Bromo volcanoes on a  3-day tour from Bali.

Malang is a city in East Java and the perfect base for visiting Mt Bromo. You can spend 2-3 days in Malang, these are our accommodation recommendations.

TIP Alternatively, stay in Cemoro Lawang, the nearest village to Bromo. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from Cemoro Lawang to the foot of Mt Bromo.

What to Pack for Hiking

  • Small backpack
  • Light raincoat
  • Warm clothes
  • Hiking shoes or boots & socks
  • Camera gear
  • Personal medication
  • Local money
  • Hiking poles (If you need it!)

Tips for Visiting

  • Don’t bring unnecessary things with you!
  • You can rent a motorbike in Probolinggo and get to the volcano. But this option is not recommended as the roads are unpaved and slippery!
  • Bring enough local money! You can only pay for the entrance fee, toilets, and horse rides with cash!
  • Wear closed hiking shoes and warm clothes, as the weather is usually cold and windy.
  • As unexpected rain can happen at any time, bring a light raincoat.
  • Allow enough time for hiking, as the trail is steep and slippery. We recommend using a headlamp for safer overnight hiking.
  • The most beautiful sunrise viewpoints of Mount Bromo are King Kong Hill, Penjakan, and Seruni Point.
  • You can rent a jacket, sweater, gloves, and scarf at your accommodation or from locals near the viewpoints.

Mount Bromo

Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia, located in the Tengger Mountains. At 2,329 meters (7,641 feet), it is not the highest peak in the massif, but it is the most famous. The area is one of East Java's most popular tourist destinations, and the volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Bromo is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Mount Bromo is located in the "Sea of Sand" nature reserve (Javanese: Segara Wedi or Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), which has been protected since 1919.

Mount Bromo, A Spectacular Indonesia Mountain

Located some 4 hours drive from Surabaya , the capital of East Java, Mount Bromo is a part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park that covers a massive area of 800 square km. While it may be small when measured against other volcanoes in Indonesia, the magnificent Mt Bromo will not disappoint with its spectacular views and dramatic landscapes. At 2,392 meters tall, Mt Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia’s mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting.

From a vantage point on Mount Penanjakan (2,770 meters above sea level), 2.5 hours from Malang. visitors from around the world come to see the sunrise over Mt Bromo. From this spot the vista is magnificent. All you will hear is the click of cameras as visitors snap their camera’s hoping to capture the incredible scene of Mt Bromo in the foreground with Mt Semeru smoking in the distance and the sun shining brightly, quickly rising in the sky.

The eerie landscape has spurned countless legends and myths. Mt Bromo has particular significance for the Tengger people who believe that this was the site where a brave prince sacrificed his life for his family. The people here appease the Gods once a year during the annual Kasada festival where offerings of vegetables, chickens and money are thrown into the crater of the volcano.

To reach Mount Bromo, you can fly to Juanda international airport in Surabaya. There are direct flights to Surabaya from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hongkong, Jakarta and Bali . From there, continue your journey to Mt Bromo by booking with a travel agent, or driving the Surabaya-Pasuruan-Wonokitri-Mt Bromo route. The journey will take 2-3 hours. It is best for you to leave Surabaya at 23:00 PM - 24:00 AM in order to arrive in time for sunrise. Or you can stay overnight at one of the hotels at Prigen, Tretes, to make sure that you are on the crater rim before sunrise.  Ponies can take you across the sand sea to the bottom of the steep stairs that leads to the crater.

Java Island is located between Sumatra and Bali which is the geographical and economic centre of Indonesia, and is home to more than half of the total population in Indonesia. It offers a dazzling array of scenery - colourful rice paddies, belching volcanoes, rainforests, savannahs, and much of the journey is defined by scenic excess. Mount Bromo – active volcano in Indonesia

Bromo is an active volcano, located in East Java, Indonesia, inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sunrise and a hike to the volcano are the typical postcards views from Indonesia . And it’s no wonder why, as the view is breathtaking. Unfortunately, many people already have realized that, making Mount Bromo one of the most popular tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia.   The massif, where the Bromo volcano belongs to is one of the most visited places on the island.

Bromo volcano is famous not only from its active caldera but also from a spectacular sunrise that you can watch above the valley. In fact, the Mount Bromo sunrise lookout points have an overview of three different volcanoes that are located next to each other. The view is really beautiful and worth an early start. But… because the sunrise over Bromo is so popular it can also get incredibly crowded. Like incredibly.

I know, I know, it can be a bit discouraging and I thought exactly the same when I’ve first heard about it. Luckily, there is a very simple way to enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike on your own without the crowds and to see a beautiful sunrise above the massif for free, without the need of a tour. My tips below help you to have an intimate and peaceful hike to the top of Mount Bromo, help to save you a lot of money and also allow you to choose the best sunrise (and sunset!) viewing spot.

How to organize the mount bromo hike without the tour and with no crowds.

During our 10-day Indonesia trip , we managed to visit beautiful Bali, the paradise Gili islands, climb the fascinating Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java and organize the Mount Bromo hike with sunrise on our own. If we managed it with no problems, you can do it too. You really don’t need a tour for that.

If you are traveling in Indonesia, you can easily combine the visit to Bromo with an amazing hike to the Ijen volcano. Both of the hikes can be done in 3 days (or 2 days with a push). For details on how to climb the Ijen volcano in the best way follow my Kawah Ijen hike guide .

During our Indonesian trip, we were coming back from the direction of Bali , after doing the night hike to the Ijen volcano. You can do the same trip, or the other way round. You can find our 10 days Indonesia itinerary here for a better overview. We chose the route to Mount Bromo through Probolinggo, as it’s the easiest to get there by public transport.

If you’d rather go to Mount Bromo with a tour, this private trip from Surabaya to Mt. Bromo for sunrise is a good choice.

Mount Bromo hike Sea of Sand

#1 How to get from Kawah Ijen (or Bali) to Mount Bromo

If you climbed the Kawah Ijen crater earlier, there’s a high chance that you would want to also visit Bromo. Two volcanoes can be connected by one trip and you don’t need a private tour for that.

After you come back to Banyuwangi (Karangasem) town from Ijen hike, take a train from there to Probolinggo. If you come from Bali, you can take the same train and follow my route from here .

There are normally morning and afternoon trains. If you plan to take a morning train, I recommend booking it in advance online, as they can get pretty full. We took an afternoon train to be able to have some rest in between. The train ride takes around 2 hours and it’s a great opportunity to watch the changing scenery and people on the train.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour, Train to Probolinggo

#2 Probolinggo

Probolinggo is one of the biggest towns close to Bromo, where you can get by train. There is not much to see in Probolinggo itself, so just stay there for the night resting after climbing Ijen or go straight from there to the number 2 on the list. Or you can wander around and look for food markets. We found one on the way back when waiting for our train to Surabaya. Yum!

Where to stay in Probolinggo?

We didn’t have the best experience in the hostel, that we chose, so I am not going to recommend it here.  It’s good to either stay close to the train station, where you arrive, or to the bus station where you leave from. You can try one of those hostels instead, they have a good location and good reviews:

  • Misran Homestay
  • Hary’s Homestay

Food market in Probolinggo, on the way to Bromo hike

#3 Cemoro Lawang

The next step in your journey to Bromo volcano is to get from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. Cemoro Lawang is a small town in the mountains, located at the base of the Mount Bromo hike and a Bromo sunrise trip. The journey from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang takes around 2h along the windy roads and it’s very picturesque.

How to get to Cemoro Lawang from Probolinggo?

There are several ways of getting to Cemoro Lawang. The best and cheapest option is to take a bemo (a public bus). There is also an option for a taxi or a motorbike. I even tried hitch-hiking but it didn’t quite work there.

#1 Take a bemo

The cheapest way to get to Cemoro Lawang is to take a public bus, called bemo. There are several bemos going from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang every day.  But there is a catch.

The bemos leave only when full. Bemo can fit around 15 people and it normally waits until at least 10 people gather up, so the driver can earn some money on the transport.

Sometimes, if there is a lot of people waiting, they can leave quite quickly. Other times, it means waiting for hours for more people to arrive.

You have the option of waiting or you can also pay for the empty seats. You need to calculate if this would make sense for you, as otherwise, you can another way of transport.  Very often travelers, who don’t want to waste a lot of time waiting for more passengers, buy empty seats. The entire vehicle (15 seats) costs 450,000 rupiahs (1 seat is 30 000 rupiahs). It’s probably not the best practice as it teaches the drivers to wait for tourists so they can pay for every seat, but it works if you don’t want to spend the whole day at the bus stop. We were waiting for 1,5h with 3 other people and then we decided to pay the outstanding amount and leave.

If you don’t want to pay for the empty seats, try to arrive earlier in the day as then it’s easier to fill the bus with passengers. If you arrive later in the afternoon, you will have very few chances for the bus to fill up.

Bemos depart from the place near the main bus station in Probolinggo called Terminal Bayuangga  (but not from the station itself). You need to go along the road after you pass the fence to the station and you will see some bemos waiting by the road. There are many local shops and cafes there. If you look on Google Maps, it actually has a name “Public Mini Bus Bromo”

#2 Take a taxi

Another (not a budget) option is to take a taxi. You will frequently hear the taxi drivers offering you a ride when you wait for bemo to depart.

#3 Take ojek/motorbike

We’ve also got offered transport by motorbike or ojek (which is a seat at the back of the motorbike). We were two people, so we didn’t go for it. It’s worth keeping in mind that the way to Cemoro Lawang is quite long (2h in a car) and the roads are windy. The motorbike ride might be very uncomfortable, long, and even dangerous. I do not recommend it.

*From some other reports, I’ve heard that some people were charged 10k IDR for entry to Cemoro Lawang. However, we didn’t need to pay anything.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour

Where to stay in Cemoro Lawang?

I can recommend staying closer to the hiking route to Bromo and close to the path leading to the sunrise viewpoint.

We stayed in Wisma Yog Bromo Homestay . For 386 479 IDR you can get a double room with a shared bathroom , but no breakfast. We had some good food in the warung nearby. Wisma Yog is one of the closest hostels to the non-official, but the widely used route to climb the Bromo crater.

Alternatively, you can choose located next door, Cemara Indah hotel , which has a better standard and is also a great start for Mount Bromo hike and departure point for the Bromo sunrise.

Mount Bromo hike

After arriving in Cemoro Lawang, you can leisurely climb the Mount Bromo crater and admire the active volcano with no crowds.

Mount Bromo is 2,329 meters high, but the hike to the top of the crater is not a difficult one. From the Wisma Yog hotel , where we stayed, it takes around 45 minutes one way. You can easily walk there, no need to take a jeep or a horse. Please, do not take those poor horses.

There is a set of steep steps leading to the top of the Mount Bromo crater, but they are not overly difficult.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano, with recent eruptions happening in 2004, 2010, 2011, and 2015. Therefore always check before traveling what is the current situation.

The landscape looks like from another planet. The experience at the top of the Bromo volcano is also very special – you can hear the inside of the Earth. The sound coming from the middle of the volcano reminds me of the sound of a starting plane. It was my first time hiking the active volcano and it was a great experience.

View to the Sea of Sand and the Hindu temple in Mount Bromo hike

The Sea of Sand

The Bromo volcano lies in the middle of the big plain, which is called the Sea of Sand. It’s a big area, that looks like a desert and it’s filled with the fine volcanic sand from the previous eruptions of Mount Bromo. In order to reach Mount Bromo, you need to cross the Sea of Sand.   On the way to the volcano, you’ll also pass a Hindu temple.

Mount Bromo hike without the crowds

The secret to the Mount Bromo hike without the crowds is to go for a hike in the afternoon or late morning when all the organized tours leave.

That’s it! Easy, right? 😉

The typical itinerary for the Mount Bromo organized tour is as follows. First, they drive for Mount Bromo sunrise to one of the famous viewpoints like King Kong Hill. After sunrise, all the tours go together for a Mount Bromo’s hike to the crater. They pass through the Park gate which is located somewhere at the beginning of the Sea of Sand. That’s where they normally need to pay the foreigner entrance fee of 220,000 IDR on weekdays or 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays. We haven’t seen that gate and we’ve been told that there is rarely someone there in the afternoon anyway. I guess they make all their money from the insane amount of tours in the morning.

Then, everyone from the organized Mount Bromo tours goes up the crater.

You can imagine the number of people that are there at the same time – insane . It is not enjoyable and not very safe, either. We were watching the jeeps driving up the hill to the sunrise and it was a never-ending line of cars. Hundreds and hundreds of cars were going to one single place at the same time. I don’t know about you, but for me, this is far from enjoyable and just sounds like a nightmare. That’s what we wanted to avoid. And it worked!

When you go to do the Mount Bromo hike after all of the tours leave, it’s only you, the rumbling volcano, and a few other people. Great experience!

Mount Bromo hike, on top of the crater

Follow these steps for the free Mount Bromo hike without the crowds:

1. Find the local entrance to Mount Bromo Park.

The entrance is a non-official one and it’s used by the local horseman. It’s located on the right side at the back of the Cemara Indah hotel (which is just next to Wisma Yog Homestay). There’s a security booth for the hotel just next to it, but when we walked around several times, nobody told us anything. The hotel is located on the hill, so the path takes you straight down to the Sea of sand. You can clearly see the volcano from the top of the hill, next to the hotel, and you can also easily see it when you reach the Sea of Sands, so you will not have any problems with navigation. Walking to the crater from there should take up to an hour.

2. Cross the Sea of Sand in the direction of the volcano. There are some paths you can take, but really it’s just the massive area full of volcanic ash, so you can just cut through and direct yourself toward the volcano on the horizon.

3. On the way, you will pass by the Hindu temple. It was closed when we were there.

4. Pass on the left side of the temple and go towards the left, where you can see a small Bromo crater. The path up the Mount Bromo crater goes uphill and then closer to the crater it changes into a set of steep steps. It is not difficult at all.

5. From the top of the volcano, you have amazing views of the surrounding area and the other 2 volcanoes inside the Bromo massif. You can also clearly see inside the crater. Sometimes the sulfur cloud can be quite thick and the rumbling of the volcano is very loud. The sensation is just crazy!

6. After the Mount Bromo hike, go to sleep early as you need to wake up for another sunrise.

Tip:   Take something to protect your eyes and mouth, as well as the camera from dust. If there is even a little bit of wind, the dust will be everywhere.

Steps to the top of the Mount Bromo crater during the Mount Bromo hike

How to find the best place for Mount Bromo sunrise?

There are several different hills on each side of Cemoro Lawang town, that are good for watching Mount Bromo sunrise. It’s just a matter of finding the best one for you and avoiding the crowds.

We decided to walk to the closest hill, where we found a perfect spot.

In order to catch Mount Bromo sunrise on time, start hiking early. If you stay close to Cemara Indah Hotel, do not leave later than 3 am. We started even earlier, as I wanted to take some night photos before sunrise.

  • Start at Cemara Indah Hotel . It’s the same place where you passed the day before when going down to the Sea of Sand and then hiking to Mount Bromo.
  • From there, follow the road up the mountain. On the night of our climb, it was entirely dark, so we could barely see our surroundings. From time to time there was only a motorbike passing us by. It’s good to have a torch handy.
  • After around an hour, you will see the first lookout point for Mount Bromo sunrise with locals preparing food and tea for tourists. It’s located on the bend in the road. You can see the volcano from there, but the view is a bit obstructed by the trees, so I recommend going further on.
  • After 15 minutes, you will get to another lookout point, which is called the Seruni viewpoint. You will recognize it immediately from the concrete platforms. The best viewing point for Mount Bromo sunrise is located on top of those platforms. We were thinking about hiking further, but the view from where we were was really good (see photos), so we stayed. If you climb to the roof, which is not difficult, you will have a comfortable sitting position. Closer to the sunrise, the place got really crowded, but our spot was still with the best view. In my opinion, there is no point of hiking more and you can settle on the top of the roof in Seruni point for the best view without any obstacles.
  • There are also other lookout points further on the way. The famous one is the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan 1 and 2. It is, however, usually crowded and full of jeeps, as they can drive all the way up.  I do not recommend going there. We were observing hundreds and hundreds of jeeps driving through the Sea of Sand at night to get to that viewpoint for the sunrise. You also have an option of walking to the viewpoint called King Kong Hill and Love Hill.

Mount Bromo sunrise spot

After sunrise, go back to the hotel and catch a bus back to Probolinggo. It’s the same story that was on the way there, so the bemos only leave when there are enough people. However, it is much easier to fill them up, as many people come back to town after sunrise. From Probolinggo you can get a train to Surabaya. There is an airport in Surabaya with connecting flights to Jakarta.

Not fussed about Mount Bromo sunrise? Try the sunset instead!

Honestly, although I always prefer sunrises, mainly for their tranquility and peacefulness of the waking up world, when it comes to Mount Bromo, I would recommend the sunset instead. Everyone knows how crazy the Mount Bromo sunrise is, so if you want to entirely avoid the whole hassle of waking up at night, walking to the viewpoint, and still being surrounded by other people, then you can just sleep in and watch the sunset in the evening. The sunset can be viewed from many places, even in the center of Cemoro Lawang town.

We found a nice spot, where they were also selling Bakso (an Indonesian type of meatball), so we had dinner with a view. This lookout point is located just in the town center. On the junction coming from Cemara Indah Hotel, you need to turn right and follow the road up. After a few minutes, you will see a big square with a view of Mount Bromo. You can walk a bit further, taking the path to the left, in a direction to the grassy hill, where you can have an even better view. It can also be a good Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint, but I expect it to be crowded as there is another hotel just next to it.

Mount Bromo hike do it yourself

Key info for the Mount Bromo hike and sunrise

  • You can easily do the Mount Bromo hike with no crowds and for free. You can also go for the Mount Bromo sunrise view for free and with fewer people than when you choose an organized tour.
  • Cemoro Lawang is the town at the base of Mount Bromo.
  • Mount Bromo entrance fee is 220,000 IDR on weekdays, and 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays for foreigners, but it’s often not collected in the afternoon and the gate is located far from the route described above.
  • There are several hills on every side of Cemoro Lawang town, good to watch the Bromo sunrise. Don’t go where everyone else goes.
  • Stay in the hotel which is located close to the route for the Mount Bromo hike and the sunrise path. I can recommend a budget option Wisma Yog or mid-range Cemara Indah Hotel.
  • Consider doing sunset instead of sunrise for a quieter experience.
  • Enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike without the crowds!

What to pack for Bromo

Below are the necessary items that you need to have for your Bromo adventure:

  • Sunglasses – the sun is very strong, and the dust can easily get into your eyes. Check UV sunglasses at a good price here.
  • Hiking shoes  or sneakers
  • Suncream  – I use  this suncream as it has great protection and good skin care.
  • Small  day backpack
  • Scarf for the dust
  • Hat to protect from the sun
  • First aid kit  – you never know what might happen (like to me in  Svalbard ), so better be safe
  • Torch for walking for the sunrise – the best is   a head torch , so you can keep your hands free
  • Water – I recommend a reusable water bottle or Filter bottle that you can fill in and save money and reduce plastic usage. If you don’t have access to refilling water, then you can use a  water bottle with a filter like LifeStraw  to have clean water on the go.  Check the price here .
  • Some warm clothes – long-sleeve shirt/jumper/light waterproof jacket (for example packable rain jacket ) in case of rain. It wasn’t cold in Bromo in October, but in the early morning, it can get chilly.
  • Camera – I took pictures in this post with my Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera . I often used the landscape lens – Samyang 12 mm, F 2.0 lens. If you take photos with your phone, consider getting a selfie stick and tripod in one .

Mount Bromo is the most unique volcano in Indonesia's ring of fire

DOMINATED BY TENGGER TRIBES

The most recent caldera in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Natioanl Park is the 9 × 10 km-wide volcanic ashen black sea of sand, which is surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater edge. This caldera formed between 33,000 and 45,000 years ago. An overlapping cluster of postcaldera cones was constructed on the floor of the ‘Sandsea’ caldera within the past several thousand years. The youngest of these is the Bromo tuff cone. More than 50 mild-to-moderate explosive eruptions have occurred since 1804, as recorded in the Global Volcanic Network (GVN) data base.

A Guide To Indonesia's Epic Mount Bromo

bromo indonesia tour

Mount Bromo has become one of Indonesia’s most-sought views, bustling with tourists and adventurers daily. To make the most of your visit, read our guide to Indonesia’s epic Mount Bromo.

The blown-off crater of this majestic volcano is one of many things to explore around this renowned mountain. The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park holds a wide range of destinations, from deserts to stunning green hills. The good news is you can tour most of it in just one day — hiking to the top of Bromo takes less than an hour. And you can choose what to do with the remaining time to spare. Waterfall? Ride a jeep along the desert? Pick your adventure .

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Preparation

Your unforgettable experience in Mount Bromo starts with ample preparation. Get enough sleep and eat properly the days before; you’ll need physical fortitude to truly embrace the best spots in the best possible way.

Here’s what to pack before you go. Keep in mind that even though it’s Indonesia, you’re not going for a typical tropical island getaway. In fact, pack your winter attire — jacket, scarf, socks, and gloves; wear light clothes underneath

Putu Bagus Susastra /

The topographical condition makes the temperature at Bromo similar to a desert, cold at night but scorching during the day. Hours before sunrise, the temperature may reach 10 degrees below Celsius, and may top at 32 degrees Celsius during the day. Finally, a chance to sport your best winter and summer attire in one day!

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Don’t forget to bring a mask or scarf to cover your nose and mouth. Bromo is perched on a ‘sea of sand,’ and it gets very dusty. Powdery sand will be flying about through the desert and up the mountain.

How to get there

Mount Bromo is located at Probolinggo, a town in East Java. You can book your flight to the nearest airport at Surabaya or Malang, then continue by land. From either of the two cities, the trip to Probolinggo takes roughly 3-4 hours. The most convenient option is perhaps to rent a car, but a more affordable option is to get on a bus from Surabaya or Malang to Probolinggo then ask around for a shared van to Bromo.

If you’re renting a car, leave around midnight to make it in time for sunrise. It’s also common to depart the day before and rent a room at neighboring Cemoro Lawang.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Once you arrive at the entrance to the national park, you’ll be asked to switch to the jeep. One vehicle costs starting from $50-60 for six people, depending on your travel itinerary. If you’re traveling alone, you can ask around and form a group to split the cost.

Things to see and do

Mount Pananjakan is the most popular viewpoint for a Bromo sunrise. From Pananjakan’s top, you’ll get the perfect angle of Bromo and its neighboring peaks.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

The viewpoint is accessible by jeep, so if you’re renting one, you won’t have to hike (unless you want to, which will take you about 2 hours).

There are a lot of warungs around the jeep parking lot, so this may also be a good time to relax for a while and order a cup of coffee or eat breakfast before venturing on.

The jeep will only get you as far as the desert area at the mountain’s base. Intriguingly enough, the desert is called Pasi r Berbisik or ‘whispering sands’.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

You’ll have to proceed by foot or ride a rented horse up to the foothill, then go up the stairs to the peak of Mount Bromo, where you can see the deep caldera or turn around to see the magnificent view of the whole mountain complex.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

During a special ceremony, called the Kaskada, you can even observe locals throw sacrifices into the caldera as offerings to the gods. But even on other days, the mighty caldera still fascinates tourists with the soaring hot smoke and strong sulphur smell.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Don’t be discouraged by the notion of hiking a mountain, it takes less than an hour to reach the top from the jeep parking area; a good start for stiff urban dwellers who fancy a change of scene.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Yes, Teletubbies, as in the ’90s kids show with the colorful costumes and sun baby. In the middle of the volcanic caldera is a picturesque green savannah with sweeping hills, pretty much like the ones seen in Teletubbies.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Tip: This is where you ditch the jackets and put on the sunglasses and SPF 30.

Putu Bagus Susastra /

Despite its soft drizzle streams, this waterfall has a distinctive grandeur that makes it one of the most popular attractions around Bromo. The water runs down the majestic cylindrical canyon and drops into an emerald pool below, creating a calming rushing sound and blissful atmosphere all around.

Apple could be trying to ‘hedge its supply-chain bets’ away from China with CEO Tim Cook’s whirlwind Southeast Asia tour

Apple CEO Tim Cook visits an Apple developer academy at Binus University in Tangerang, Indonesia, on April 17, 2024.

For years, “Asia” for Apple usually meant China . The world’s second-largest economy is one of Apple’s most important overseas markets, and a massive manufacturing hub. “There’s no supply chain in the world that’s more critical to us than China,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a trip to China in March. But with China sales slumping and possible threats to its supply chain, Apple could be taking a closer look at new Asian markets.

Apple’s CEO just wrapped up a five-day tour of Southeast Asia, stopping by Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore on a trip that could be an effort by the company to “hedge its supply-chain bets” and “ease the path” for later investment in the fast-growing region.

Southeast Asia is one of several emerging markets, alongside India and Latin America, that Apple needs to target for future growth, says Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.

“Apple’s brand image is perceived as high-end in the Southeast Asian region and holds a favorable position in consumers’ mindsets,” he says. The analyst anticipates “further enhancement” in Apple’s sales strategies for Southeast Asia as the region’s consumption levels improve.

Southeast Asia, for now, makes up a small, but fast-growing, percentage of the iPhone market.

“Apple shipped just under 10 million iPhones per year to Southeast Asia last year, which accounted for less than 5% of global iPhone shipments. But that was still 32% growth for iPhones in Southeast Asia,” says Bryan Ma, vice president of client devices research at IDC.

But Ma suspects that Cook’s interest in Southeast Asia is driven not by retail, but manufacturing.

“I suspect that an even bigger motivation behind the visit, though, is for the company to hedge its supply-chain bets as the industry continues to diversify from China. That means not just meetings with suppliers who have operations in the region, but also with governments who can ease the path for investments in their countries later,” Ma said.

China is still Apple’s largest manufacturing hub, but the COVID pandemic demonstrated to the iPhone maker the risk of having everything in one place. COVID lockdowns in Zhengzhou, sometimes known as “iPhone City,” lowered Apple’s smartphone production in 2022. Apple later partly blamed COVID disruptions for a 5% year-on-year drop in revenue for the 2022 holiday quarter.

More broadly, the U.S. is encouraging companies to “de-risk” by diversifying supply chains away from China.

Where did Apple CEO Tim Cook visit in Southeast Asia?

Cook’s first stop was Vietnam , already part of Apple’s supply chain. The country boasts a typical export-oriented manufacturing economy, and can leverage its close proximity to existing manufacturing supply chains in China.

During his two-day stay in Vietnam, Cook pledged to increase spending on Vietnam-based suppliers during a meeting with Pham Minh Chinh, the country’s prime minister, in Hanoi. The company says it’s already spent close to $16 billion on the country’s supply chain since 2019, creating about 200,000 jobs.

Cook then traveled to Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy and most populous country. During a meeting with the country’s outgoing president, Joko Widodo, Cook said he would consider setting up manufacturing facilities in the country.

Apple currently has no manufacturing facilities in Indonesia. Instead, the company has set up several app developer academies since 2018. Apple said it would open its fourth developer academy in Bali during Cook’s visit.

Indonesia requires smartphones sold in the country to be made up of at least 35% local components by volume, though Apple satisfies the requirement, despite the lack of local production, through its developer academies.

The government hopes the U.S. tech giant will go beyond software. Indonesia’s industry minister, who was also at the meeting with Cook and Widodo, suggested after the meeting that Apple could partner with Indonesian companies to obtain components, even if it does not set up a manufacturing facility.

Cook’s final stop on his Southeast Asian tour was Singapore, the city-state with the region’s highest per capita income. The country is home to three of Apple’s five Southeast Asian stores. (The other two are in Thailand, and Apple is reportedly considering its first store in Malaysia.)

Upon Cook’s arrival, Apple announced that it would invest over $250 million to grow its campus in the city-state. Apple opened its first facility in 1981, with 72 employees focused on the Apple II personal computer. The company says it now uses Singapore as a regional hub for critical roles and currently employs over 3,600 staff.

Apple’s CEO met Singapore’s prime minister-to-be , Lawrence Wong, on Friday. On LinkedIn , Wong wrote that he discussed “opportunities in Southeast Asia” and “the close partnership between Singapore and Apple” in his meeting with Cook.

On a popular Singaporean radio show on Friday, Cook said he wanted to invest more in R&D in the country. “Singapore has always held a special place in my heart,” he told listeners.
