How to Setup and use Multiple Profiles on Safari Browser

Safari is the preferred browser for a majority of iOS users. It is known for security and privacy features second to none. Apple has now announced Safari profiles for iOS, iPadOS, and Mac. The new feature lets you create multiple Safari profiles with separate settings. Safari Profiles is available on iOS 17, iPad OS 17 and macOS Sonoma.

Why Do We Need Multiple Browser Profiles?

The first question that pops up is why. Multiple profiles are a great way to share your device without disturbing individual settings. This is especially true for iPad, which is often shared with the entire household. Here are some reasons why Safari profiles make a lot of sense.

Separate browsing history. Yes, no more sleuthing around others’ profiles.
You can have separate profiles under the same Apple ID. Each profile maintains its history, cookies, extensions, tab groups, and other preferences.
Multiple-user households are set to benefit the most.
One can create separate profiles for work and personal. This way, things will not get mixed up, and productivity will also increase.

Apart from the above points, Safari profiles add an additional layer of privacy. Furthermore, you can lock Private browsing tabs with Face ID. Please note that Safari profiles is only available on iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. All of these are in the early beta phase. Thus we don’t recommend installing it on the primary device.

Steps to Create Multiple Safari Browser Profiles on iPhone and iPad

How to Switch Between Multiple Safari Browser Profiles on iOS and iPad OS

Apple has added a toggle that lets you shift between profiles. Here’s how to do it-

1. Open Safari and select the tabs icon from the bottom right of the screen.

2. Tap the drop down icon at the center.

3. Select the Profile dropdown from the Tab Groups menu.

4. Select the desired Safari profile and tap Done to finalize the change.

Apple has devised a way to indicate a change in Safari profile. Remember how iOS had asked you to choose a color while creating a new profile? Well, the same color is now the background of the new tabs page.

How to Create Safari Profiles on macOS

Safari profiles feature is available on all Macs running macOS Sonoma. Follow the steps below to create and use Safari profiles on Mac.

1. Open Safari browser on your Mac.

2. Click Safari and select Settings from the menu.

3. Click Profiles. Under the profile, you will see a Profiles button. Tap the button.

4. Add a Name, Symbol, and color for the new Safari profile.

5. You can create a new bookmarks folder or use existing ones.

6. Done with all the settings? Click Create Profile .

How to Switch Profiles in Safari on Mac

Switching profiles on macOS Sonoma is a seamless experience. You can start browsing with a specific user profile and switch later. Here’s how to do it.

1. Right-click on the Safari icon from the Dock and select New Window .

2. Select an option that says New Personal Window .

How to Create a Safari Profile on Mac

To set up profiles in Safari, simply follow these steps:

Click the Profiles section.
Click the + button to add a new profile.
Give your new profile a name, symbol, and tab color.
Choose your settings for Favorites , New Windows , and New Tabs .
Click the Extensions tab, then check the box next to any installed extensions you want to enable for the profile.
Click the red button to close the settings window and save your changes.

Note that when you create a new profile, your device will automatically generate a "Personal" profile to differentiate other browsing sessions conducted outside of the profile you created. Both profiles and additional ones you create can be edited in the same section of Safari's Settings. You can also delete existing profiles if desired.

How to Create Safari Profiles on Mac, iPhone, and iPad

For individuals sharing devices, maintaining privacy and customization freedom can be challenging. Fortunately, Safari has introduced a feature allowing users to create multiple profiles. Each profile carries unique browsing information, such as cookies, history, and other customization preferences, like tab groups and extensions. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for creating multiple Safari profiles on your Apple devices.

How to Set Up a Safari Profile

On an iphone or ipad, how to switch profiles in safari, how to delete profiles in safari.

To create your Safari Profile, you must have Safari 17 or later. Safari 17 is included with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma or later. Download it separately on macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura. To check your Safari version, go to Safari -> About Safari .

Note that when you create your first profile, the system will automatically create a default profile, Personal , which includes your current history, tab groups, favorites, extensions, and bookmarks.

Also, remember that if you create a profile on one of your Apple devices, it will appear in the Safari settings on your other devices that use the same Apple ID.

Tip: update your Apple ID and password anytime by entering your system settings.

To create a Safari profile on your Mac, follow these steps:

Open Safari , go to the menu bar, and select Safari -> Create Profile . Alternatively, choose Safari -> Settings , then select the Profiles tab.

Click Start Using Profiles .

Enter a name, and select a symbol and color for your new profile.

Tick Create new bookmarks folder to create a new folder for your favorite bookmarks, then click Create Profile .

After creating your new profile, you can customize how Safari opens new windows and tabs. By default, Safari opens new windows and tabs to your start page.

Click the Extensions tab to select which Safari extensions you would like to use with your profile.

To create a Safari profile on your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings -> Safari -> New Profile . Customize your profile by adding a name and selecting an icon and color. Choose whether to create a new Favorites folder or assign an existing one for your profile. Customize it as described above.

Once you’ve created your profile, you can see your current profile on the Safari toolbar. Mac has a button with the profile’s name, symbol, and color. You’ll only see the Safari profile’s icon on the iPhone and iPad.

If you want to switch profiles on your Mac, click the Profile button, and select Switch to [Profile] Window .

The process is similar on the iPhone or iPad: tap the Profile icon, tap Profile , then select the profile you want to switch to.

Also Helpful: once you set up your Safari profiles, swap from Chrome to Safari as your default browser in minutes.

You can delete a profile you’ve made in Safari anytime, but this can’t be undone and will also delete all the browsing information related to the profile. The only exception is the default Personal profile, which houses all the existing browsing information, like bookmarks and tab groups, that you had before you created a Safari Profile.

To delete a profile on your Mac, go to Safari’s menu bar, and click Safari -> Manage Profiles . Select the profile you want to delete, and click Remove (-) .

Once you click the Remove button, a window will pop up asking you if you’re sure you want to delete the profile. Select Delete Profile .

If you only have one profile other than the default profile, removing it will remove the Profiles feature altogether. If you want this, remove the profile and select Delete and Stop Using Profiles .

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings -> Safari . Scroll to Profiles , select a profile, and tap Delete Profile -> Delete .

Safari's biggest upgrade in iOS 17 is browsing profiles — the ability to create separate groups of tabs and bookmarks within a single app. These can follow you across your iPad and Mac too, but in this guide we're going to show you how to get going using an iPhone running iOS 17.

You may be a bit confused why there's no obvious place in Safari to add a profile, and we certainly were too. The trick is that you need to add the profile in Settings first, then set things up after that in Safari itself. Don't worry though; read on to get to our step-by-step instructions on how to set up browsing profiles in Safari, and you won't get lost.

How to set up browsing profiles in Safari in iOS 17

Create a new Safari profile in the Settings app
Customize the profile's name, icon and more
In Safari, open the Tabs menu then tap the Profiles icon
Select your new profile and set up your tabs and favorites

1. Create a new Safari profile in the Settings app

Scroll a short way down the main settings page to find the Safari section. Within the Safari options, scroll to find the Profiles heading, and then tap New Profile.

2. Customize the profile's name, icon and more

Enter a title for the Profile, choose an icon and color from Apple's pre-sets. You can also pick which set of Favorites this profile will use, and which page will appear when you open a new tab.

3. In Safari, open the Tabs menu, then tap the Profiles icon

Tap the Tabs icon on the far right of the Safari window, then open the drop-down menu by tapping the Profile section in the middle of the bar at the bottom of the screen.

4. Select your new profile and set up your tabs and favorites

Under your tab groups, you'll see a menu that leads to you your profiles. Select the one you want, and you'll have a brand-new set of tabs and favorites to sort out. Repeat steps three and four if you need to swap back again.

How to Set Up and Use Profiles in Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac

Starting with Safari 17, users can now create profiles. This allows you to have different sets of bookmarks and extensions, which you might use to separate your browsing experience into categories, such as work, personal, school, etc.

These profiles allow you to keep some things more private; you don’t need your coworkers seeing your health, financial or hobby-related bookmarks. You can also use the profiles to help organize your browsing. You can create customized profiles to separate your work, health and finances, hobbies and more to make it easier to find your bookmarks by decluttering your start page.

Each of your profiles will have separate histories, cookies and website data, extensions, Favorites and Tab Groups. You will be able to use your profiles across all your Apple devices.

How to create a profile in Safari

To use profiles on Mac, you must be running Safari 17, which is available for macOS Monterey, Ventura and Sonoma. To check your Safari version, open Safari, go to the top menu bar and select Safari > About Safari .

Open Safari on your Mac and choose Safari > Settings from the top menu bar.
Click on the Profiles tab, then select Start Using Profiles .

Choose a name, a color and a symbol for your new profile. To see more symbols, click on the circle with three dots.
You can also create a new bookmarks folder or choose an existing one. Click Create Profile .

If you want to use certain extensions with this new profile, you can click on the Extensions tab and check the boxes next to ones you want to enable. For example, you may want Grammarly enabled for a work profile and Capital One Shopping enabled for your personal profile.

Now, if you chose to create a new bookmarks folder, you can start adding websites. On your new profile’s Safari start page, you should see that you can open your (existing) bookmarks in the sidebar. Then, you can drag some to your new profile’s start page. You can also edit your bookmarks the usual way by going to the menu bar at the top and selecting Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks .

After you have set up your first profile, you can add more or edit the existing profiles by going to Safari > Settings and clicking on the Profiles tab.

On iPhone or iPad

In order to use Safari profiles, you will need to be running iOS/iPadOS 17 or later.

Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap on Safari .
Scroll down to the Profiles section and tap on New Profile .
Choose a name, symbol and color. Tap the three dots for more symbols or color options.
Next to Favorites, choose an existing bookmarks folder or create a new one.
Tap Done in the upper-right corner of the screen. Now, you will need to open Safari to edit your new profile.

With Safari open, tap on the Tabs button in the bottom-right of your screen. Tap the Tab Groups button (which will be some symbol in the bottom-center of the screen) and switch to your new profile.

To add new websites to your new profile’s Favorites bookmarks, tap the plus sign [+] under the name of your profile on the start page.

If you want to use extensions with your profile, open Settings and tap on Safari . Tap Extensions , then tap on one of your extensions. Toggle the switch next to a profile to enable the extension for that profile.

How to switch profiles

On Mac, after you have set up a Safari profile, you will see a menu button at the top of your Safari window where you can select a different profile.

To use a profile on iPhone or iPad, open Safari and tap on the Tabs button. Tap Profile to change to another profile.

If you use Google Chrome on your Mac, you may be familiar with its profile feature . In my opinion, this is one of the best things about the world’s most popular browser.

Safari on iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma have a similar feature that lets you create multiple work or personal profiles, helping you keep your browsing history, cookies, favorites bookmarks, extensions, and Tab Groups separate.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create and use profiles in Safari for a separate yet personalized browsing experience.

Create a new profile in Safari

Profiles you create and profile customization you make sync via iCloud. As a result, a profile you created in Safari on Mac will also appear on your iPhone and iPad, having the same Apple ID .

1) Open Safari, and from the top menu bar, click Safari > Settings .

2) Select the Profiles tab.

3) Click New Profile .

4) Give this profile a name. After that, choose a symbol and color. Next, you can create a new bookmarks folder to keep things separate or use an existing folder as the destination for websites you mark as favorites .

5) With all done, click the Create Profile button.

Safari will open a new window for this profile. Your search history from this profile, cookies, Tab Groups, and favorites will stay separate from your main Safari profile.

Note: Reading List isn’t separate, and you may see your original Reading List entries even in the new profile.

Additionally, you can go to Safari Settings > Profiles > select this profile > Extensions and choose to enable or disable extensions you have installed in Safari.

You can create more profiles by clicking the plus button (+) on the Profiles screen of Safari settings.

On iPhone and iPad

If you created a profile in Safari on Mac, you can open Safari on your iOS device and find this profile there. In addition to that, you can also create Safari profiles right from your iPhone or iPad:

1) Open the Settings app on your device running iOS 17.

2) Scroll down and tap Safari .

3) Tap New Profile under the Profiles heading.

4) Give it a name, pick an icon, and select a color.

5) Select a Favorites folder. By default, the Favorites folder of standard Safari with no profile is selected. To keep things separate, tap New Folder , and it will now create another favorites folder for this profile instead of using your existing favorites.

6) Finally, tap Done .

Once you have created a profile, you can tap its name and then manage the extensions or change its existing settings.

Use profiles in Safari

You will see the Profile option inside Safari only after creating at least one profile using the steps above. Once you have done that, here’s how to use it.

1) Open Safari.

If you don’t see a profile name in the top left corner, you’re browsing in standard, no profile mode.
If you see the name of a profile (like Tech Work in the image below), that means you’re browsing inside that profile.

2) To open a window of a profile:

Click File from the top menu bar and choose New Profile Name Window . If you have more than one profile, they all will appear here. For example, I have added two profiles in Safari, and thus, you can see the New Tech Work Window and New Other Work Window .
If you select New Window , it will open a window without a profile.

1) Open Safari and tap the tabs icon .

2) Tap the arrow button and choose Profile .

3) Select a profile.

2) Tap Profile and select one.

Edit or delete Safari profiles

Editing or removing a profile on one device will reflect on all your Apple devices where you use the same Apple ID.

1) Open Safari and click Safari > Settings .

2) Go to Profiles and select a profile.

3) Here, you can customize the name, symbol, color, and favorites folder, as well as decide what shows up when you open a new window or tab.

4) To delete a profile, select it, click the minus button , and hit Delete Profile .

On iPhone or iPad

1) Launch the Settings app and go to Safari .

2) Tap an added profile name.

3) Here, you can change its existing settings.

4) And to get rid of a profile, hit Delete Profile and confirm.

Other Safari tips:

What are Safari Profiles and how to use them on iOS and iPadOS 17

Safari Profiles on iOS 17 are a new way to separate your browsing experiences with unique profiles for work and personal, general and private.

Not everyone has a separate phone for work and play. This means you might be searching online for your work or school assignments throughout the day but then switch to browsing casually for your personal pleasure at night or on lunch. Whether you’re researching for a project or shopping online for new laptop accessories, or you prefer to have general and private browsing experiences, you might benefit from being able to separate your surfing. This is where Safari Profiles come in.

Safari Profiles are available for macOS Sonoma, iOS 17 , and iPadOS 17 . We already covered how to use Safari Profiles on macOS Sonoma , and here, we’ll walk you through how to set them up on your mobile devices. The process is the same for both iPhone and iPad, and we have screenshots here showing how to do it using an iPhone 14 .

How to set up Safari Profiles on iOS and iPadOS 17

Open the Settings app .
Scroll down and select Safari .
Scroll down and select New Profile .
Create a Name for the Profile.
Select a fitting icon, like a graduation cap for a school profile or briefcase or hammer for work.
Select a preferred color scheme for the profile.
Once finished, tap Done .
In the menu, you’ll now see Personal and Work Profile (or whatever name you gave to your secondary profile).
To switch profiles while browsing, open Safari and select the Tabs icon from the bottom menu.
Select the Profile icon at the bottom, center.
Select Profile and switch to the other Profile you want to browse with.
Browse to your preferred website. You’re now browsing using a different Profile, which will have its own unique Favorites, Bookmarks, History, and more.

Why would you use Safari Profiles?

There are many scenarios whereby Safari Profiles would be beneficial when browsing the web from the best iPhones or Macs . For one, you can adjust browser settings in each. So, you can block cookies and prevent pop-ups when you’re working, for example, or restrict access to certain sites if you let your kids use your phone (name a restricted Profile “Kid-safe” or something similar).

If your company has a strict set of rules for browsing while in the office, you can set up a profile that will ensure you don’t break them. Not every company, after all, provides its employees with work phones to use alongside their personal ones.

Using Safari Profiles is a great way to de-clutter as well. You might have several browser windows open for personal use but want a cleaner experience when you need to access something from work or school. This can also prevent you from getting distracted from a YouTube video you were playing on the train on the way to work. Or conversely, from a research report, you were reading at the office when you’re home at the end of the day and should be relaxing with personal time.

Safari Profiles can be especially useful for shared family tablets whereby multiple people, or even just a pair of siblings, use the same tablet. Each person can have their own unique browsing experience. You don’t have to worry that someone else will close the window of the article you hadn’t gotten around to reading yet, or the web-based application you were in the middle of using.

4. Safari will open a new window for your Work profile. You will see the profile name, icon, and color in the title bar. Also, the window will be configured with the color you have selected.

To switch profiles in Safari on iPhone or iPad, open Safari -> Tabs and tap the stacked menu icon (iPhone) or Tabs group icon (iPad). Finally, tap your desired profile. On Macs, open Safari, right-click the Safari icon and choose New [Profile name] Window.

Use profiles in Safari on Mac

Starting with Safari 17, you can use profiles to keep your browsing separate for topics such as work, personal or school. Each profile has separate history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups and favourites.

Create a profile

Switch between profiles, find out how profiles keep browsing separate, sync profiles between devices, rename a profile, open links with profiles, delete a profile.

Requires Safari 17 or later*

When you create your first profile, your current history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups and favourites will become part of the default profile, named Personal. Profiles you create are in addition to this default profile.

From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Create Profile. Or choose Safari > Settings, then click Profiles.

Click Start Using Profiles. Then set up your new profile:

Name: the name will appear in the new Safari toolbar button for this profile.

Symbol: the symbol will appear in the Safari toolbar button for this profile, and in the default background of the profile’s start page.

Colour: the colour will appear in the Safari toolbar button for this profile, and in the default background of the profile’s start page.

Favourites: if you choose “Create new bookmarks folder”, the new folder will have the same name as this profile. Bookmarks saved to the favourites folder will appear in the Favourites bar for this profile.

Click Create Profile. By default, Safari will open new windows and new tabs to your start page.

After you’ve created a profile, the Safari toolbar will display a button with the name, symbol and colour of the currently used profile or Tab Group. Click the button to open a menu, then choose:

New [Profile] Window: opens a new window in that profile. You can also open a new profile window from the menu bar: Choose File > New [Profile] Window.

Switch to [Profile] Window: switches to another profile without opening a new window. To keep your browsing history separate, this option is only available from a window displaying your start page or an empty page – before you visit another page.

If you use Focus, you can add a Focus filter that will switch to a specific Safari profile automatically whenever you use that Focus. Find out more about setting up Focus . When adding a Focus filter, choose the Safari filter, then set the Filter Type to Profile and choose the profile you want use.

Some Safari features and settings are shared between profiles, including AutoFill information, Passwords information, Security settings, Websites settings and Privacy settings. Others are not shared, or behave differently.

The Favourites bar is only shared between profiles that are set up to use the same favourites folder .

Private browsing windows only use the Favourites bar of the default profile.

History, cookies and other website data

Browsing history, cookies and other website data are not shared between profiles.

When you start using a new profile, websites won’t have the cookies or website data needed to remember you, so they may ask you to sign in again.

When you clear your history , you can clear all history or just the history of a selected profile.

Tab Groups are not shared between profiles.

Start page settings

Start page settings , as well as the “New tabs open with” and “New windows open with” settings, are not shared between profiles.

Safari extensions

Safari extensions are available to all profiles, but are managed (turned on or off) separately.

Extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. For each extension you select in this tab, you can see which profiles are using them. You can also uninstall extensions for all profiles from this tab.

Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Profiles sync automatically between all of your devices that are using Safari 17 or later, are signed in with the same Apple ID and have Safari turned on in the iCloud section of Apple ID settings .

You can change the name, symbol and colour of any profile, including the default profile. But there can only be one default profile, and you can’t make another profile the default.

From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Manage Profiles. Or choose Safari > Settings, then click Profiles.

Select a profile on the left.

In the Name field on the right, type a new name.

By default, links from outside Safari will open in the profile used most recently. But you can make links to specific websites open in a specific profile. For example, you may want to open links to your company’s website in your Work profile, or open links to your school’s website in your School profile.

Go to the website you want to set up for this feature.

From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings, then click Websites.

From the sidebar, select Open Links With Profiles. A list of open websites will appear on the right.

From the pop-up menu next to a website, choose the profile you want to use for that website.

This feature only works with links opened from outside Safari, such as links in Mail, Messages, the Finder or other apps. The link will open in the profile you’ve chosen for that website, unless the website is already open in another profile.

When you delete a profile, all of its history, cookies and other website data will also be deleted. Favourites and other bookmarks will be kept.

Click the Delete button (–) at the bottom of the list, then confirm the action when prompted.

You can’t delete your default profile. If you delete all other profiles, Safari will stop using Profiles.

* Safari 17 is included with macOS Sonoma or later and the latest macOS Ventura and macOS Monterey updates. It’s also included with iOS 17 or later for iPhone, and iPadOS 17 or later for iPad.

Apple has introduced a brand new feature to iOS 17 you might not have even heard of, but it's one that could drastically improve the work-life balance of your iPhone, specifically in Safari.

Safari Profiles lets you have separate groups of tabs and bookmarks within the Safari app on your iPhone with iOS 17. In its simplest form, that means you can use your iPhone during the day for work with one set of tabs and bookmarks before switching to a different set of tabs when you aren't at work. It could be the difference between opening Safari and not seeing pesky emails, projects, research papers, or anything else while you're trying to relax at the weekend. Conversely, it means you won't get distracted by memes and cat videos while you're trying to work.

Such a great feature probably shouldn't be as hard to find as it is. It's buried in the Settings app on your iPhone rather than in Safari itself.

There are a few steps to setting up Safari Profiles with an initial setup in Settings followed by fine tweaking in Safari. To get started, here’s how to create a Safari Profile in Settings.

With macOS Sonoma , Apple’s Safari browser is catching up with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and other competitors by introducing profiles: separate spaces that you can set up in the app to better organize your browsing.

Each profile has its own browsing history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups, bookmarks, and favorites. The idea is that you can have one profile for your job and another for personal use, for example, or different profiles for different projects you’re involved in at work.

In general, it means a cleaner and less cluttered browsing experience. Take bookmarks, for instance: you probably bookmark all kinds of sites for all kinds of reasons, and if you separate them out into profiles for business and leisure, they’ll be easier to find when you need to get back to them.

You might also want to create a separate profile for major undertakings like planning a vacation so that everything you’re collecting is kept in its own space. Once you’ve upgraded to macOS Sonoma, you’re ready to get started.

Creating profiles

To create your first profile:

Open the Safari menu, and pick Create Profile (once you’re using more than one profile, this changes to Manage Profiles ).
You’ll get some info about how profiles work. When you’re ready, click Start Using Profiles .
For each profile you create, you’ll be asked to specify a name and a symbol for it as well as a color. You can call your new profiles anything you’d like — “Work,” say, or “Vacation” — the color is used on the profile’s toolbar button and on the default background of the profile’s start page. You can also specify a new folder for the bookmarks linked to this profile or use an existing profile.
Finally, you can choose what appears on newly opened windows and tabs using the drop-down menus: your start page, an empty page, the same page you just left, or sites marked as favorites. Click Create Profile when you’re done.

After you’ve created your first profile, all of the browsing data Safari has stored up to this point, including bookmarks and browsing history, is then moved to a profile called Personal — you can get back to this at any point to pick up where you left off before you started creating profiles. Safari treats this as your main or default profile going forward. (You can rename it if you need to.) You can create more profiles, but they will be treated slightly differently — we’ll get to that later.

Using profiles

Once you’ve created your profiles, here’s how to take advantage of them:

If the Safari sidebar is closed, you’ll see a drop-down menu to the left of the address bar at the top of the Safari interface. Open it up, and it lists the profiles you’ve created as well as the Tab Groups (if any) that you’ve set up inside that profile — this menu can be used to switch between both profiles and Tab Groups.

After you open the drop-down menu, if you’re on the profile’s start page, you have the option to either switch to a different profile in the same window or open a new browser window for a different profile. If you’re on an actual website, you only have the option to open a new window so that browsing histories stay separated.

If the sidebar is open, you don’t get the drop-down menu for profile switching. Instead, the name of the profile you’re currently using is shown at the top, and any Tab Groups that have been created are under that. You can still jump between Tab Groups from here as well as access your bookmarks and reading list.

The other way to jump between profiles, which you’ll have to use if the sidebar is on-screen, is to open the File menu and then choose New Window . The list that then pops out will let you open a new window for any of your profiles. You can jump between these windows in the normal way: by clicking and holding on the Safari icon in the dock.

Managing profiles

To see and edit the profiles you’ve made:

Open the Safari menu and choose Manage Profiles .
You can get to the same screen by selecting Safari > Settings > Profiles .
To add a new profile, click the + (plus) button on the left.
To delete one, select it from the list and click the - (minus) button.

Select a profile to customize it. Personal profiles limit you to changing the profile name, the profile icon, and the profile color — the favorites for this profile can’t be moved. The new tab and new window options are under General on the settings dialog.

Other profiles you’ve created (other than the Personal one) will have a second Extensions tab. Head here to manage the extensions that are active for the profile. Extensions installed through any of your profiles will automatically be enabled for all the profiles you’ve set up, so you’ll need to manually disable any that you don’t want running with a particular profile.

Extensions can’t be removed from this screen, only enabled or disabled. To completely uninstall an extension from Safari, switch to the Extensions tab in the settings dialog, select the add-on, and pick Uninstall . The Extensions tab is also where you manage the extensions for your main Personal profile.

How to use Safari Profiles in macOS Sonoma

The new Safari Profiles feature includes an element of private browsing, but it's really more a development of the ideas behind Tab Groups and Focus Modes. It's about taking away distractions, so that you can focus on what you want to be doing right now.

So you could create a Profile that is just for work. In that, you can have a whole set of Tab Groups, and you can even have extensions, that do not appear in any other Profile.

How to set up Safari Profiles in macOS Sonoma

Launch Safari on the Mac
Choose the Safari menu and then System Settings
From the window that appears, click Profiles in the top row
On the information page that appears, click New Profile

The New Profile dialog offers several options, but only one is essential — you need to give the profile a name.

Beyond that, you have the choice to:

Choose an icon for the profile
Choose a color for it
Have a brand new bookmarks folder, or
Use your existing Favorites folder
Finally, click Create Profile

The color is more significant than it seems. For when you next open Safari after going through this, it will open in your new profile — and the background will be that color.

What looks fine as a little thumbnail color in the dialog box can then seem overwhelmingly in-your-face when it's on the whole Safari window.

How to setup a second Safari Profile

There's close to no benefit having just a single Safari Profile. You would get the feature's increased private browsing, but the real advantage of profiles is in being able to switch between them.

The process of creating a second, third, or any more profiles is subtly different to the first one.

Your first new profile is now listed on the left
Click the plus sign at bottom left to create another profile
Fill out the same form with a name, icon choice and so on

Curiously, there are two more options that you only when you have already created a Profile. If you click on the name of one, you see the original form with the name and icon again, but now it also has options to do with windows and tabs.

Just as with the regular Safari, you can elect to have new tabs or windows automatically open with the Start Page, for instance.

Note, though, that this is also where you can elect to manage Safari Extensions that are in any given profile.

With your two or more profiles set up, you're going to want to switch between them. When you have separate Safari windows open for each profile, you just click between them.

But it's a little counter-intuitive how you get those separate windows open. Say you have a Home and a Work profile, then to open a new window in one of those, you must:

Right-click on the Safari icon in your Dock
Choose New Home Window or New Work Window

While you are in a Safari window in a Safari profile, everything you do stays in that profile. So you can add extensions, you can add bookmarks, and they will not appear in any other profile.

This is where Safari Profiles are similar to Tab Groups and Focus Modes. Just as with a Focus Mode, you can elect to go into a profile and not see anything else.

Tab Groups already let you compartmentalize your work. With a "Work" tab group, Safari already appears to show you solely the tabs you've set for work, and none for anything else.

But as superb as that is for helping you switch tasks, it's extremely easy to switch back. With two clicks in the Tab Group menu at top left, you can immediately switch to any group you want.

With Profiles, there's no such quick click to change. There is a new label at the top left of Safari's screen, which shows the name of the profile in use.

However, the only way to switch is via right-clicking on the Safari icon in the dock.

How to delete a Safari Profile

There is now a list of all your profiles on the left
Click on one
With that selected, click on the minus sign at bottom left
Confirm by clicking Delete Profile

Note that deleting a profile also permanently deletes your browsing history, and any cookies, that were saved in it.

With iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, Safari is ready to conquer new territories. We all use our browsers for a mix of reasons. With Profiles, you can neatly separate your personal sleuthing from your professional wanderings on the World Wide Web. They separate your cookies, history, extensions, Tab Groups, and favorites. So, let's embark on a digital safari to explore this new territory!

How to Create a Profile in Safari on iPhone

To create a Profile for Safari on your iPhone running iOS 17, go to the Settings app.

Then, scroll down and tap the option for 'Safari'.

In Safari settings, scroll again and tap the 'New Profile' option under Profiles.

On the page for creating a new profile, enter a name and select an icon from the numerous available. Then, choose a color for it. The icons and colors are meant to help you distinguish between the profiles easily. You can also configure settings like the Favourites folder and which page New tabs will display.

Then, click 'Done' in the top-right corner. The profile will be created.

Once the profile is created, you'll be able to select which extensions you want to enable for it from the 'Extensions' section.

Switching Between Profiles on iPhone

It's a breeze to switch between profiles on iPhone.

Open the Safari app and tap the 'Tabs' icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Then, tap the 'stacked menu icon' in the middle; this icon is new to iOS 17 but opens a familiar menu with some new options. The icon will also change depending on the profile you're using.

From the menu, tap the 'Profile' option. By default, you'll be browsing in 'No Profile' in Safari until you change it.

Then, select the Profile you want to switch to.

The start page will feature the color and icon of the Profile, so you'll always know which one you're using.

The profiles you create on your iPhone will be synced across your devices using the same Apple ID and updated to the latest software.

How to Create a Profile in Safari on Mac

macOS Sonoma users can also create and use Safari Profiles on their Macs.

Open the Safari browser on your Mac. Then, click the 'Safari' menu option from the menu bar on the top and go to 'Settings' from the menu. You can also use the Cmd + , shortcut to open Safari settings.

The Settings window for Safari will open. Go to the 'Profiles' tab.

If you have any existing profiles, they will appear here. In this case, click the '+' icon to create a new Safari profile.

Otherwise, click the 'New Profile' button.

Then, enter the name of your profile. Select an icon and color, and choose which folder you want to use for bookmarks, i.e. if you wish to create a new folder or use the existing folder. Click 'Create Profile' once all the details are entered.

Once the profile is created, you can configure other settings, like how the new windows and tabs will open for that profile.

You can also configure which installed extensions you want to enable for the Profile by switching to the 'Extensions' tab.

Switching Profiles on Mac

Switching between profiles on Mac is extremely easy, even more than on iPhone. When you open Safari directly, it will open without any profile.

But to open Safari with another profile, simply right-click the Safari icon. Then, click 'New [Profile] Window' from the context menu. For example, we clicked 'New Personal Window' to open the Personal profile here.

The new Personal window will open as configured. The Start Page will have the color and icons you assigned it to help you differentiate. It will also show the profile name on the title bar.

You can then switch between open profile windows by right-clicking Safari again and selecting the desired window from the context menu.

Is it possible to have a different sets of bookmarks in different Safari profiles? Even though you can designate a specific set of "Favorites" for each profile, they all come from the same bookmarks list.

Huh. And here I thought I clearly just didn't understand the Profiles and how to use them. This basically makes Safari's Profiles feature useless (for me anyway).

Of course you can individual favourites per profile. You just have to setup/select a favourites folder for each profile .

Favorites/bookmarks per profile are not - as far as I can tell - propagated to your other devices. They seem to be local changes only. I'm still testing but if this is the case, it's a major drawback if not a showstopper. Apple: the whole configuration per profile needs to be propagated! Edited to add - specifically referring to Favorites. Should be able to have Favorites separated out by profile. My work, school and personal profiles will have (surprise!) different Favorites that I should be able to directly go to by clicking on them in the window.

One note: part of the issue I'm having is a weird bookmark syncing issue where changes made on one device are not propagated, but changes on other devices are. Weird. Should be fun to troubleshoot... Back to profiles, the way I would have thought this would have worked would be to have completely separate bookmarks and favorites per each profile, not just a subfolder, as chrfr states above. This feels like Apple went a bit light on the changes to keep iCloud bookmark syncing the same as before. Another note: clearly the profiles update between all devices (and I have a lot), but the bookmarks are problematic. So they created a new syncing mechanism for profiles but not bookmarks. Hey Apple, how about throwing up a warning if something isn't syncing, would you?

After literally hours of troubleshooting, resets, reboots, quits, turning iCloud off and back on again... Finally have Safari bookmarks syncing again. Now I can take a look at profiles. This is a bit beyond the pale for a "it just works" company.

OK, after getting my bookmarks fixed and syncing correctly (an issue in its own right), I really like how this works. It's not perfect and hopefully it will get some tweaks going forward, but it's pretty good stuff. You may find that you'll want to re-organize your bookmarks into folders differently; doing so helps a lot with this feature. That is, I used to have somewhat related Favorite folders, but they really weren't organized as sharply as they could have been. Now they're organized more distinctly by my browsing activity - shopping, travel, hobby 1, hobby 2, side hustle business, corporate business and so on. Overall, I've mapped Favorite bookmark sub-folders to functions which now fit into a profile, as above: shopping, travel, hobby 1, hobby 2, side hustle, corporate business... I also re-named the overall profile as "Base" from "Personal" - this reminds me that everything is in that profile. It's a more descriptive name and reminds me to get bookmarks moved into the right profile subfolder. Then, I never use Base as a window - I'm in one of the profiles all the time, or at least I mean to be. So my Hobby 1 profile favorites are right there in the menu bar. Yes, you can set up completely separate bookmarks/favorites for a profile but re-creating them (especially in bulk) seemed to be too much work. At this point I'm happy to let iCloud bookmark syncing do its thing, and the iCloud profile syncing seems to be working well. I like that the profile management will send extensions you have turned on for that profile to devices that don't already have that extension - that's a nice touch. You can also manage cookies and such by profile, which is pretty much expected as that's how this feature works - but still nice to have that ability. Bottom line, profiles works pretty well and you get the favorites for the profile you're in, as long as you're willing to tweak your bookmarks appropriately. One tweak I'd like to see is that if I happen to navigate to a site that's in a profile that it uses that profile to open the site, but I could see some issues with doing so (session cookies being one). But having the option would be great. Heck, I'd even like to specify which VPN or network connection to use on each profile (ideally, every bookmark but that's likely too much). Also letting me know if I have duplicate bookmarks in more than one profile would be nice.

Millennials and members of Gen Z both love Cartier watches, but they prefer different styles.
Millennials favor the Panthère, evoking the old-money aesthetic and '80s nostalgia.
Gen Z, on the other hand, opts for the vintage yet unique Baignoire.

Want to know how old someone is? Just check the style of the Cartier watch on their wrist.

Generational trends have long existed, with different age groups favoring styles and brands that cater to them. But online, fashion preferences have become more like a battle between millennials and members of Gen Z.

For example, the older group loves skinny jeans and tight leggings , while Gen Z opts for baggy, low-rise pants in fun prints and "hot girl errand fits."

And while both generations share an appreciation for Cartier craftsmanship, ideal watches differ among those who can afford the pricey wristwear.

"There's a joke that millennials love the Cartier Panthère, and Gen Z loves Cartier Baignoires right now," Trang Trinh , a watch aficionado who runs the TikTok account Girls O'Clock , told Business Insider.

Going back in time

As Sotheby's said in an Instagram post , Cartier unofficially created the Baignoire watch in 1912 when it transformed a traditional, round clock into an oval shape.

The design officially launched in 1957, according to the art corporation, and had famous fans like Charlie Chaplin in its early days. The actor once gifted one to his wife.

The Panthère watch, on the other hand, is slightly more modern.

The square-shaped piece hit the market in 1983, as Harper's Bazaar reported, and was named after the graceful movements of panthers.

Millennials vs. Gen Z: Cartier edition

So, why do millennials love the Panthère style? And what makes the Baignoire stand out to Gen Z watch fans?

As Trinh pointed out to BI, they're "entirely different shapes" that appeal to two very different groups of people — namely, female watch collectors.

The Panthère, for example, is chic, reminiscent of the old-money aesthetic , and hearkens back to the '80s — both when the piece launched and when many millennials were born.

"The Panthère is more reminiscent of jewelry," Trinh said. "It's a rounded, square shape with these smaller, kind of rice-bead links that integrate beautifully. It's delicate, and the bracelet is really, really beautiful."

The Baignoire, on the other hand, is vintage but trendy, which Gen Z loves.

"The Baignoire is a bit more about its geometry than its jewelry-like quality," Trinh said. "It's got this simple oval shape with a curved bracelet."

That geometric shape gives the piece a fashion-forward edge and helps it stand out on the wrist.

"Gen Z is really looking for individuality in how they express themselves," she added.

But ultimately, you'll have to decide which Cartier watch is right for you.

If you want to keep things simple, maybe follow the trends of your generation. You can't go wrong there.

Or, you could follow your budget. Panthère watches retail for prices between $3,300 and $134,000, and Baignoires cost between $6,900 and $102,000.

'Freaked out' Democrats mobilize to stop RFK Jr. from cutting into Biden

WASHINGTON — In fall 2016, a Hillary Clinton staffer stationed in the Upper Midwest got a call from the campaign’s headquarters in Brooklyn telling him to delete a joke he had tweeted about then-Green Party nominee Jill Stein.

The campaign’s policy, in keeping with the standard practice, was to not discuss third-party candidates, whom they viewed as minor nuisances to be ignored — not as adversaries worth combating openly, even in jest.

This year, though, Democrats have adopted a radically different strategy on independent and third-party candidates. They’re waging an open war on the likes of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom they view as mortal threats to President Joe Biden’s re-election.

There are brand new super PACs — plural — devoted to crushing third-party candidates. Democratic National Committee mobile billboards troll Kennedy at events. And party donors are funding legal efforts to try to keep him off the ballot.

Democrats are adopting such a different posture in 2024 partly because of what happened after that fall 2016 phone call: Stein won enough votes in swing states like Michigan to potentially tip the close election to Donald Trump, and Clinton become the second Democrat in less than 20 years to lose the presidency after Green Party nominees won a mere 1% support in key states.

“Everyone thinks this is going to be decided on the head of a pin, so people are freaked out like never before,” said one senior Democrat, granted anonymity to speak candidly.

Democrats have grown increasingly alarmed by Kennedy’s strength in polls, especially since he named Silicon Valley philanthropist Nicole Shanahan as his running mate. Not only could she fund the cash-strapped campaign, but her selection and the way the campaign introduced her signaled that Kennedy is positioning himself more on the left in the 2024 campaign.

Shanahan, who until recently was a sizable Democratic donor , announced on stage that she was leaving the Democratic Party and invited others to join her.

Democrats are especially concerned about Kennedy attracting low-propensity voters who are only marginally attached to the Democratic Party, including swaths of young people and, especially, young men of color .

Even a small number of defections from Biden's 2020 coalition could tip a key state against the president in 2024 and imperil his narrow path to victory.

“Since early January, it has not been difficult to convince people that this is a challenge and potential problem that needs to be taken seriously,” said Pete Kavanaugh, Biden’s former deputy campaign manager in 2020, who is now running a new Democratic super PAC called Clear Choice.

The group, which has the tacit blessing of Biden’s high command, is dedicated to stopping third-party candidates from gaining traction, through research, messaging and especially “ballot access accountability” — that is, trying to keep candidates off the ballot by exploiting any mistake they make in gathering and submitting petition signatures.

'The Democrat Party’s worst nightmare'

There were some self-organized efforts to combat former Green Party nominee Ralph Nader in 2004 (after Democrats blamed his 2000 performance in Florida for hurting Al Gore), and Democrats in 2020 worked quietly to block the rapper formerly known as Kanye West from the ballot.

But Democrats have never had a well-funded national strategy like the current one to combat third-party candidates. And Kennedy, an apostate of the most famous Democratic family in America, has proved to be a particularly appealing target for donors.

“He’s got a famous last name, he’s showing up in the numbers, and a lot of them have had personal interactions with him in the past, so there is significant interest in making sure these programs are funded,” said Kavanaugh.

Future Forward, the main pro-Biden super PAC, which raised over $150 million in 2020, could potentially run ads to tamp down third-party support, according to people familiar with the effort.

Meanwhile, an earlier coalition of outside groups that worked together to combat No Labels, the bipartisan group that ended its efforts to field a presidential ticket earlier Thursday , is pivoting to Kennedy and the other candidates.

“We have learned a lot in the No Labels campaign about how to make the case against third parties this cycle, and we’re deeply alarmed by the Kennedy campaign,” said Matt Bennett, the executive vice president of Third Way, the centrist Democratic think tank that served as a hub for that effort . “Ultimately, this is going to look different. It’s going to be a persuasion campaign in swing states to not vote for him.”

Donna Brazile, the famed Democratic strategist who managed Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, said the party was caught off guard by Nader, who won nearly 100,000 votes in Florida that year as Republican George W. Bush carried the state by a 537-vote margin.

“Our focus was on voter fatigue, apathy and the lack of enthusiasm,” said Brazile. “So, we missed the post-debate momentum that Team Nader generated in a number of battleground states, including Florida.”

Brazile added that in the current media landscape, it’s “vital” for the DNC to “keep a watchful eye” on candidates it might have dismissed in the past.

Kennedy, meanwhile, is spoiling for the fight since dropping out of the Democratic primary to run as an independent. He is accusing Democrats of being un-democratic and blasting out fundraising emails calling himself “the Democrat Party’s worst nightmare.”

“They are using a vast network of shadowy dark money groups and vicious attorneys to keep Kennedy/Shanahan ticket off state ballots and spread malicious smears,” he added in one missive.

Biden himself, however, is leaving it to outside groups and the DNC to engage with Kennedy, keeping his hands clean.

“We’re not giving this guy oxygen,” said one person familiar with the campaign’s thinking.

The Biden campaign wants the 2024 election to be seen as a binary choice between Biden and Trump. But its belief is that Kennedy is probably going to be a factor in only a handful of battleground states. And in those states, the battle for voters will be fought locally, with national support from the DNC and super PACs.

Why Trump thinks RFK is 'great for MAGA'

It's not just Democratic strategists who think Kennedy is a threat to Biden.

Kennedy is “great for MAGA,” Trump said on Truth Social last weekend, adding, “I love that he is running!” On Fox News, Trump said , “I think he’s probably going to hurt Biden. I don’t see him hurting me.”

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., a possible Trump running mate, said on Newsmax last week: “What we do realize is having that third-party candidate on the ballot, no matter the choice for vice president, is gonna bleed votes from the Democrats.”

Vivek Ramaswamy, the former GOP presidential candidate, said he hopes Kennedy gets on as many state ballots as possible since “it should take votes away from the Democrats," while former Trump spokesperson Erin Perrine said it was foolish to think "he would take votes from anybody other than Joe Biden."

Still, there is enormous uncertainty about how much third-party candidates will actually matter come November.

Kennedy has yet to secure ballot access in most states. And the polling data is messy enough that no one is comfortable saying exactly how much support Kennedy has, let alone how many of his supporters might otherwise go for Biden versus Trump. And historically, a large portion of voters who at some point tell pollsters they’ll vote third-party wind up pulling the lever for a major candidate.

And Kennedy is not well positioned to take advantage of the major source of progressive dissatisfaction with Biden: Israel’s conduct in its war against Hamas in Gaza, since Kennedy's stance on the conflict is similar to Biden’s.

Still, it's clear that at least some voters who might otherwise vote Democratic are attracted to Kennedy’s populist message.

“I like the fact that he’s interested in divorcing the corporate interests with government interests,” said a Biden 2020 voter who gave her name Joanna and attended last month’s event in Oakland unveiling Shanahan. “He has integrity, and he’s honest.”

If Kennedy is not on the ballot, she suggested she would likely vote for the Green Party nominee instead.

“I’ve actually voted Democrat my entire life," she said. "But I don’t think I’d do it this time."

Switching profiles is easy; just tap Tabs and select the desired profile. On a Mac, open Safari, go to Settings, click Profiles, and create a new one.
Different Bookmarks for Different Safari Profiles
Back to profiles, the way I would have thought this would have worked would be to have completely separate bookmarks and favorites per each profile, not just a subfolder, as chrfr states above. This feels like Apple went a bit light on the changes to keep iCloud bookmark syncing the same as before.
