At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.

We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

Car travel insurance FAQs

Table of contents compare quotes.

The popularity of road trips in America persists. A 2022 Vacationer survey revealed that nearly 80% of Americans planned to take a road trip this past summer. [1]

Your car insurance policy generally provides coverage in all 50 states and Canada, even if you live in a state with higher or lower insurance minimums. If you travel to Mexico or another country, you may need to purchase country-specific insurance or add coverage to your existing policy.

In the event of an accident out of state, your auto insurance coverage limits adjust to meet that state’s minimum requirements if they exceed your state’s requirements.

Your car insurance policy may provide coverage in U.S. territories like Puerto Rico.

You need Mexican travel insurance to drive in Mexico.

Car insurance when traveling across the U.S.

Most standard auto insurance policies apply in other states, protecting you even though minimum auto insurance coverage requirements vary between states. If you get into an accident in a state with higher minimum insurance requirements than where you live, your policy limits will adjust to meet that state’s requirements. Your limits don’t decrease if you visit a state with lower minimum requirements.

For example, imagine you live in Florida but have an accident while driving through Georgia. Florida only requires $10,000 in property damage coverage and $10,000 in personal injury protection. Your insurance policy limits would adjust to meet Georgia’s requirements of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury coverage and $25,000 in property damage liability coverage .

What is the minimum coverage in each state?

Each state sets its own minimum auto insurance coverage requirements . Here’s a look at the current minimum coverage requirements for each state.

Renting a vehicle for your road trip

Renting a vehicle for road trips versus driving your personal vehicle comes with several advantages. Driving a rental vehicle helps you avoid putting extra miles and wear and tear on your personal vehicle, which may hurt its resale value. If you drive an older car, your rental car will likely be newer with better gas mileage. If you lease a vehicle, taking it on road trips could cause you to exceed mileage limits and face costly penalties.

When you rent a vehicle, the rental company will offer you what’s known as rental car insurance , which can include:

Liability coverage

Loss/collision damage waiver

Personal accident insurance

Personal effects coverage

If you rent a car, you have the option to decline rental car coverage as long as your personal auto insurance policy covers rental car use. If you don’t have auto insurance, you must purchase liability insurance through the rental car company.

Car travel insurance and rental excess

A rental excess describes the maximum amount you’ll have to pay out of pocket in case of damage to the rental vehicle. Rental companies typically hold the excess charge on your credit card until you return the vehicle. The company waives the excess charge if the car is returned without damage. If you return the rental vehicle with damage, the rental company will charge you a fee based on the damage incurred up to the excess maximum.

Does your insurance cover rental car damages?

In most cases, your personal auto insurance policy extends the same coverage limits and deductibles to rental vehicles. [2] The coverage you can purchase through a rental car company often overlaps with personal coverage. If you don’t have car insurance, you must purchase coverage through the rental company to rent a vehicle.

Best Credit Cards for Rental Car Insurance

Compare car insurance quotes instantly, best rental car insurance companies.

You can buy rental car insurance from the same company where you rent the vehicle, or you can purchase it separately from a reputable rental car insurance company.

Insurance costs fluctuate based on where you live, your travel location, travel time, and other factors. Dozens of rental car insurance providers exist with different coverage, estimated costs, and customer service, so it’s important to shop around and consider what company works best for you and your insurance needs.

The table below provides a comparison of four different rental car insurance companies, using a 30-year-old Michigan resident traveling between March 4 and 18 to calculate average costs.

What car insurance do you need when traveling abroad?

Each country requires different car insurance minimums. For example, drivers in France and Germany must have third-party liability coverage, which covers damages you or your car causes other people, cars, or property — including medical bills. If you rent a car in Italy, you must purchase the rental company’s collision damage waiver.

If you plan to drive while vacationing or staying in another country, the easiest way to get car insurance is to purchase international car rental insurance coverage through a car rental company. You can learn more about a country’s car insurance requirements by contacting the country’s U.S. embassy.

Car Insurance for International Drivers

Car Insurance for International Drivers

Do you need insurance if you’re renting a vehicle abroad.

U.S. citizens must meet driver licensing laws and minimum insurance requirements to rent a car and drive in foreign countries. Most U.S. insurance providers won’t cover you while driving abroad, regardless of the vehicle. If you rent a car abroad, you must purchase insurance from a rental car company. Some credit cards may offer coverage for international car rentals, but this often qualifies as secondary coverage. Because laws vary by country, you should research foreign car insurance requirements before traveling abroad.

Several factors can affect the cost of insuring a rental vehicle, including:

The rental company: Insurance pricing varies depending on which rental agency you choose.

Location: State minimum coverages vary, so the cost may differ depending on where you rent a car.

Vehicle type: Insurance costs vary depending on the vehicle you rent. A large truck or SUV may cost more to insure than a compact car.

Mileage: The length of your rental period and the number of miles you drive can also affect how much it costs to insure the rental vehicle.

Coverage type: The type of coverage you choose and whether you purchase add-on coverages affect insurance pricing.

What insurance covers your vehicle while traveling to Mexico?

While your auto insurance coverage provides sufficient protection when traveling in the U.S., “traveling abroad is a different story,” says Ben Guttman, an insurance broker at North Central Insurance Agency.

“If you are traveling to Canada or Mexico, there may be additional coverages you can easily add to your policy,” says Guttman.”If Canada is your destination, you’re probably in the clear, but since their insurance laws are different, [insurers] will provide upon request a Non-Resident Inter-Province insurance card.”

However, special insurance is required by law to drive in Mexico. Mexico insurance provides liability and asset protection while visiting Mexico. “If your plans will take you south of the border to Mexico,” Guttman says, “you may need to endorse your policy or purchase separate coverage.”

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about car travel insurance.

What is car rental travel insurance?

Car rental insurance is the insurance coverage offered by rental companies when you rent a vehicle. Purchasing car rental insurance isn’t always necessary, since your personal auto insurance policy may cover car rentals with the same limits and deductibles.

Do you need travel car insurance?

Car rental insurance isn’t always necessary since most auto insurance policies extend to cover rental cars. If you don’t have personal auto insurance, you must purchase coverage from the rental company to rent or drive a rental vehicle.

Does your car insurance work in all states and abroad?

Most U.S. auto insurance policies extend to all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories, like Puerto Rico. Your insurance policy may also extend to parts of Canada, but most other foreign countries, including Mexico, require you to carry special car insurance that varies depending on the country.

Key Takeaways:

  • Based on research conducted by the MarketWatch Guides team, the best long-term travel insurance providers are Travelex, Allianz, Faye, IMG and World Nomads.
  • According to our research, travel insurance companies define long-term trips as those lasting longer than 30 days, with many long-term policies providing coverage anywhere from 90 days to one year.
  • Long-term policies can provide similar coverage to a traditional travel insurance plan, such as trip interruption, baggage and medical protection.

Our Rankings of the Best Long-Term Travel Insurance Providers

Our research team found the providers and plans below are the best long-term travel insurance options on the market. We considered coverage, cost, add-on protection and policy length when making our decisions.

  • Travelex: Travel Select
  • Allianz : OneTrip Premier
  • Faye : Travel Protection Plan
  • International Medical Group (IMG) : GlobeHopper Senior
  • World Nomads : Explorer Plan

How We Chose Long-term Travel Insurance Plans

When selecting the long-term travel insurance plans featured in this review, we considered various factors, including:

  • Coverage : We examined the types of plans available for purchase and the coverage limits each travel insurance provider offered.
  • Cost : While long-term travel insurance plans may cost more than a plan for a week-long trip, that doesn’t mean purchasing coverage needs to break the bank.
  • Add-on protections : We took note of providers and policies that offered a variety of coverage add-ons, such as rental car collision, cancel for any reason (CFAR) and more.
  • Maximum policy length : We looked for travel insurance with policies that could last a minimum of 180 days, favoring companies that offered coverage for up to a year.

Compare Long-Term Travel Insurance For U.S. Citizens

See the table below for a comparison of our recommended travel insurance providers and long-term coverage plans.

Note: We calculated the below-average costs based on a 30-year-old couple taking a long-term trip to France with $8,000 in non-refundable expenses . Since IMG’s GlobeHopper Senior plan only applies to travelers aged 65 and older, we used a sample 65-year-old couple taking the same trip to France.

Best Long-Term Travel Insurance Plans

Based on our team’s extensive research into cost, coverage, policy lengths and add-on protections, we’ve chosen the following five plans as our picks for the best long-term travel insurance coverage.

Travelex

Pros and Cons

Why we picked travelex.

Travelex’s Travel Select plan can cover trips for up to one year, making it ideal for long-term travelers looking for comprehensive coverage. This policy offers pricing that includes children and the choice of five different add-ons, including CFAR coverage, car rental collision coverage, an adventure sports exclusion waiver and more. In addition, early purchase benefits include financial default coverage and a pre-existing condition waiver.

Our research has shown that many long-term or annual, multi-trip plans don’t offer benefits such as CFAR coverage or trip cancellation benefits, making Travelex’s Travel Select stand out compared to other long-term plans. However, note that other providers in our review offer higher medical limits with their annual plans over the Travel Select plan.

Allianz Global Assistance

Allianz Global Assistance

Why We Picked Allianz

Allianz’s OneTrip Premier plan provides a full year of consecutive travel coverage for both you and your children, a potential benefit for travelers with kids planning a long-term stay abroad. The company extends its benefits to each insured traveler, including trip cancellation, trip interruption , emergency medical coverage and more. In addition, pre-existing condition coverage is available if you purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of your first trip payment or deposit.

Allianz also offers what it calls SmartBenefits, which allows you to opt for a fixed “inconvenience” payment of $100 per insured person per day for a covered delay or baggage delay. You won’t need to provide receipts for this coverage, based on our research, just proof of a covered delay. While you may consider Allianz if you’re looking for comprehensive, long-term travel insurance, note that the average cost for the OneTrip Premier plan is higher than those of other providers we reviewed.

Faye

Why We Picked Faye

Based on our research, Faye offers a mix of travel and medical benefits that can make its Travel Protection Plan worth considering for a long-term trip. We like how Faye offers policyholders around-the-clock support, including an app to handle travel emergencies and claims. The company also offers telemedicine services at no extra cost. If your telehealth doctor prescribes medicine while you’re on a trip, Faye will reimburse you for the expense.

Faye covers pre-existing conditions with the Travel Protection Plan as long as you purchase a policy within 14 days of your trip. Available add-ons include an adventure and extreme sports waiver, vacation rental damage protection and vet expenses coverage if you take your pet with you on a long-term trip. However, Faye doesn’t offer the longest-lasting plan in our review, with just 180 days of coverage compared to other providers offering around a year.

IMG

Why We Picked IMG

Seniors looking for comprehensive travel medical coverage for long-term travel plans may consider International Medical Group (IMG) and its GlobeHopper Senior policy. This plan has no upper age restriction — which, according to our research, is unique in the travel insurance industry. Travelers ages 65 and up can purchase this policy, which can cover up to a year for a single trip. If you’re looking for a long-term, multi-trip senior travel insurance policy, this plan also offers the option of multiple trips per year, up to 45 days each.

We appreciate how IMG allows seniors to choose from various deductibles and maximum coverage limits, making this travel insurance policy more flexible than other companies we’ve researched. While there is no upper age limit, note that coverage limits decline for insured persons 80 years or older.

World Nomads

World Nomads

Why We Picked World Nomads

World Nomads offers the most extensive travel insurance coverage for adventure and extreme sports out of the providers in this review. Its Explorer plan covers medical expenses and evacuations for injuries related to over 200 activities that are often excluded by many policies, such as bungee jumping, scuba diving and more. We also like how you can purchase a policy even if your trip has already started, making it worth considering for last-minute coverage.

While World Nomads’ Explorer Plan could benefit long-term travelers who seek adventure, note that this provider doesn’t extend its coverage to children traveling with you. In addition, the only customization options include choosing between two plans and your length of coverage. If you’re looking for customizable long-term travel insurance or coverage that can protect your family, you may want to consider other options in this review.

How To Pick A Long-Term Travel Insurance Company

As you shop for a long-term travel insurance plan, consider the tips below to help simplify the process of finding the right policy.

Consider Your Coverage Needs

Understanding your travel needs can aid you in picking the best plan. For example, are travel benefits such as trip interruption and baggage coverage most important to you? Or, are emergency medical evacuation and medical care benefits your main concern? Once you’ve decided the types of coverage you want, you can start thinking about how much coverage you’ll need. If you plan on traveling long-term with children, you may also want to look for plans that offer free coverage for kids under a certain age.

Watch for Length Restrictions

Some travel insurance plans will provide more extended coverage than others. If you plan on traveling abroad for a few months, a plan that covers you for up to 180 days may work. If you anticipate staying abroad for up to a year, we suggest looking for plans that can cover you for that amount of time. In our experience, travel insurance providers will plainly state how long a covered trip can last, so it’s best practice to read through sample contracts before purchasing a plan.

Single Versus Multi-Destination Trips

Consider whether your long-term travel plans will include one or multiple destinations. Based on our research, some long-term plans will only cover a stay in one location. If you’re looking for coverage in numerous countries, a multi-destina t ion travel insurance plan may offer a better fit. However, according to our research, you may need to return to a home base between trips.

Understand Coverage Details and Exclusions

All travel insurance plans have a set list of exclusions for the coverage offered. Make sure you fully understand what is and isn’t covered by your chosen policy. For example, if your plan covers lost baggage, note any sub-limits or items excluded from your plan. It is also important to understand the maximum benefit amounts for each of the coverages you’ve purchased and whether any deductibles or copays are required before your policy kicks in.

What Is Long-Term Travel Insurance and How Does It Work?

Long-term travel insurance covers trips lasting longer than the time limits most travel providers set for a standard policy. For example, most insurers offer single-trip plans that cover trips lasting up to 30 days. However, a long-term policy often covers travels lasting more than 90 days, with some providing coverage for up to a year. If you choose an annual travel insurance plan for your long-term travel needs, note these policies don’t usually offer trip cancellation coverage as a standard inclusion.

A long-term policy can provide similar coverage to a traditional travel insurance plan. It can protect against trip interruptions , delays, baggage loss or damage, and more. In addition, it can cover emergency medical situations and evacuations while traveling. Long-term plans can help prevent travelers staying abroad for extended periods of time from having to purchase multiple policies to cover the duration of their trip. These plans can also cover multiple destinations , which may suit long-term travelers going from place to place.

According to our research, long-term travel insurance policies may best suit digital nomads, expats and international students. For those more concerned about their health in the event of an illness or accident over travel benefits, you may consider a long-term travel medical insurance plan for your trip. It’s best practice to consider your unique travel needs before settling on a plan, and taking the time to research long-term travel insurance can ensure you find a policy that suits your plans.

Long-Term Travel Insurance Costs

Based on the quotes we gathered, a long-term travel insurance policy may cost $540 to $1,576 . To help you better understand the cost of a long-term travel insurance policy, we gathered quotes for a 30-year-old couple taking a long-term trip to France with $8,000 in non-refundable expenses. Since the GlobeHopper Senior covers senior travelers, our team gathered rates for a 65-year-old couple taking the same trip outlined above to France.

Comparatively, the average cost of a standard travel insurance policy for a short-term trip is around $221. We calculated this average based on quotes we gathered using seven unique traveler profiles across 20 different travel insurance companies.

Travel insurance costs are influenced by several variables, such as plan details, trip costs, trip length, traveler age and more. Your exact costs for each of these policies will likely vary. The best way to learn how much one of the above plans could cost you is to get a quote from each company.

How Is Long-Term Travel Insurance Different From Regular Travel Insurance?

Long-term travel insurance differs from a standard travel insurance policy in that coverage is meant for trips lasting more than a few weeks. Typically, most standard single-trip plans can last up to 30 days. However, a long-term policy could cover anywhere from 90 days to a full year, depending on the provider.

While maximum trip lengths differ between policies for long-term and short-term travel, our research found the coverage offered remains largely the same. For example, both short- and long-term travel insurance policies usually offer trip benefits — such as trip interruption and baggage coverage — in addition to emergency medical assistance and evacuation coverage. However, some long-term or annual travel insurance plans may not offer certain add-ons, such as CFAR coverage or trip cancellation protection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance for Long-Term Trips

What is the longest you can get travel insurance for.

The length of a travel insurance policy depends on your chosen provider and plan. In this review, the longest-lasting policy can cover you for up to one year. However, other providers may offer plans that cover you for more extended periods.

Can you buy travel insurance for a whole year?

Yes. Various providers offer travel insurance plans that can last up to a year. However, our research found that some annual plans may only cover travel to one destination over this time. If you’re looking for coverage to multiple destinations, you may want to consider a multi-trip travel insurance plan.

Can you buy travel insurance for a six-month trip?

Travel insurance companies such as Faye and World Nomads offer policies lasting up to six months, according to our research. Most providers will note upfront how long each policy can last, so we recommend reading sample contracts and policy documents to ensure a plan will cover you for your entire trip.

How long does travel medical insurance coverage last?

The length of a travel medical insurance policy depends on your chosen provider and plan. Reading through coverage details on a provider’s website or sample contracts can help you better understand what a plan covers and related monetary and time limits.

How We Rated and Reviewed Long-Term Travel Insurance Companies

Our team surveyed dozens of travel insurance providers and created a scoring system to judge each company based on coverage, quality and service. We also collected sample quotes from each company, both over the phone and on the internet, to simulate an authentic customer experience. Here are the factors we take into consideration when rating providers:

  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom.

  • Plan availability (10%) : We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%) : We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%) : We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%) : We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Note: We based our ratings for each provider on each company as a whole, not just available long-term travel insurance offerings. Learn more about how we chose each long-term travel insurance plan in the sections above .

RV insurance for the open road

Members save 5% on coverage for most RVs through our alliance with Progressive.‍ ‍ See note 1

What's RV insurance?

RV insurance is a lot like car insurance. Most states require a minimum amount of liability protection for motorhomes. For campers and travel trailers that you're pulling behind a car, liability extends from the auto policy of the towing vehicle.

If you're financing the RV, some lenders may require you to have comprehensive and collision coverage.

Whether your RV is your primary residence or just for recreational use, you can customize a policy to fit your needs.

Insurance for travel trailers

If you get comprehensive or collision coverage, you also get vacation liability coverage with travel trailer insurance. This helps protect you if your property’s damaged or if someone gets hurt in or around your trailer.

If your trailer is less than one year old, consider adding total loss protection. You can also add personal effects coverage to help protect the stuff you keep inside your travel trailer.

Ways to cover your motorhome

RV insurance may cover damages and injuries if you cause an accident. You may also be able to add coverage to pay medical, hotel, transportation and windshield repair costs.

Plus, get up to $99,000 in coverage for personal property in your motorhome. We cover luxurious Class A models, Class B campervans and Class C mini-motorhomes.

Insuring a pop-up camper

On top of comprehensive, collision and vacation liability coverage, you can also insure personal property inside your camper.

Add total loss replacement to campers less than one year old to replace your pop-up with the same model or later if it’s totaled.

Coverage for slide-on campers

We offer standard coverage options like comprehensive, collision and vacation liability. You can also get total loss replacement coverage and personal property insurance.

Because you load these types of RVs onto the bed of a truck, we also provide roadside assistance for your slide-on camper and the vehicle towing it.

Insurance for fifth-wheel trailers

You can get comprehensive, collision, roadside assistance and vacation liability coverage.

If your fifth wheel is less than six-years old, consider adding Roof Protection Plus®. This helps repair or replace your roof if it malfunctions from wear and tear, or it damages other parts of your fifth-wheel trailer.

Why get a policy through the USAA Insurance Agency?

Our agency has long-standing relationships with many insurance providers. We monitor those alliances to make sure they meet our standards of customer service and financial stability.

We've worked closely with Progressive for more than 30 years. You can get help from specially trained representatives who'll serve you at the level you expect by calling 800-809-1925 .

How much is RV insurance?

You could pay less than $125 a year to insure a pop-up camper. Or choose a higher yearly payment to cover more expensive motorhomes.‍ ‍ See note 2

How to save on your premium

USAA members get a 5% discount on coverage for most RVs.‍ ‍ See note 1 Here are some other ways to lower your cost.‍ ‍ See note 3

Responsible Driver Discount

If none of the drivers on your policy have accidents or tickets for three years, you could save on your policy.

Paid In Full Discount

In some states, you can get a discount when you pay your 12-month premium all at once.

EFT Discount

Save when you set up automatic payments from your bank account, also known as electronic funds transfers, or EFT.

RV insurance FAQ

Comprehensive coverage can help pay for water damage repairs resulting from weather-related incidents.

Recreational coverage can help protect your RV inside and out while on the road or at a campsite. You may want to consider it if you use your RV part time.

Full-timer's offers broader coverage to help protect those who live in their RV most of the year. It includes personal liability, medical payments and storage shed coverage. It also has loss assessment coverage, which can cover RV association fees to help pay for damages to shared areas.

Both options let you add vacation liability protection. This helps cover bodily injury and property damage costs while you're on vacation in your RV.

It may provide liability coverage for travel trailers and campers, as long as your vehicle is towing them.

Your auto insurance usually won't pay to repair or replace your RV.

It depends. If you're renting an RV, your cost and coverage will depend on the rental location and the type of RV.

It usually won't cover:

  • RVs with more than four wheels.
  • Drivers not listed on your policy.
  • Rentals longer than 30 days.
  • The full value of the RV.
  • Certain damage to the RV while it's parked.

Travel Insurance For Vietnam: Everything You Need To Know

Updated: Apr 26, 2024, 11:14am

Table of Contents

Do australians need travel insurance for vietnam, what does travel insurance for vietnam cover, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Vietnam is an increasingly popular travel destination for Australians, with the country even hoping to encourage more Aussies to visit by potentially waiving visa requirements in due time.

The Southeast Asian country is set to be high on the list for Aussies going overseas in 2024. The number of Australian tourists in Vietnam now exceeds pre-pandemic levels: more than 317,000 Australians visited Vietnam in 2019 , while there were 390,000 Aussie visitors in 2023.

Plus, as more and more flights become available, such as low-cost carrier Vietjet Air launching a direct service between Hanoi and Melbourne earlier this year, getting to Vietnam is becoming easier for Australians.

If the direct flights, fascinating history, vast scenery and delicious food aren’t enough to convince Australian travellers, the cost may be. Vietnam is considered one of the cheapest travel destinations in the world for Australian tourists due to our strong conversion rate against the Vietnamese Dong and the nation’s low cost of living in comparison to our own.

And while cheap thrills may be what you’re after on your vacation, it’s important not to skimp on the necessities that may cost that little bit extra—such as travel insurance. This guide outlines what you need to know regarding travel insurance in Vietnam.

Investing in travel insurance is a good idea for any overseas trip. Travel insurance policies can help protect you from having to dive deep into your pockets, with many offering unlimited medical treatment while abroad and cancellation cover for your trip should the unexpected occur.

Travel insurance is not just handy for medical purposes or travel changes, either. Your personal items can be covered, should any baggage go missing or an important item be stolen—which, unfortunately, often occurs in Vietnam.

Smarttraveller warns Australians to be alert at all times in Vietnam, considering petty theft–including bag slashing–is common in tourist areas and crowded places, especially during holiday times. Snatch-and-grab theft by thieves on motorcycles is also common, the website states.

Like most international travel insurance policies, you will be able to find basic coverage for your trip to Vietnam, or choose to opt for a more comprehensive, albeit more expensive, policy.

While a basic policy will often cover medical expenses and lost luggage,a comprehensive policy includes a lot more. Most basic policies also likely won’t offer compensation for travel delays, stolen cash, accidental death and more.

Additionally, if you are going on a trip to multiple countries within the year, it may be worth opting for an ‘annual multi trip’ insurance instead—making sure that there are no exclusions to the regions you are wishing to visit.

Visa Requirements For Australians Travelling to Vietnam

You’ll still be allowed to travel to Vietnam if you don’t invest in travel insurance, but you do so at your own risk—and, as stated, it is highly advised to have a travel insurance policy for any overseas trip.

However, what you cannot do is enter Vietnam as an Australian tourist without a tourist visa. While Vietnam will grant Australian citizens visas on arrival, applying for one online is much easier.

A tourist visa costs under $100 AUD; however the exact price depends on your length of stay.

The Vietnamese government may consider waiving visas for Australian citizens, especially since many other SEA countries have done so such as Indonesia and Thailand .

However, at the time of writing, Forbes Advisor Australia has confirmed that Australian citizens must still obtain a visa to visit Vietnam for tourism purposes.

The exact inclusions of your travel insurance will be dependent on your personal policy and the provider.

However, generally speaking, you can expect a travel insurance policy for Vietnam to offer some level of cover for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost, damaged or stolen luggage;
  • Travel cancellations or delays ;
  • Personal liability;
  • Credit card fraud;
  • Covid-19 expenses;

If you are partaking in certain sports and activities, you will need to make sure that you choose a policy that covers them. You’ll also need to make sure that your policy covers any pre-existing medical conditions as well.

Plus, if you are travelling with valuables, you may wish to opt for a policy that lets you increase the protection cover on your items.

Ultimately, you need to consider what your trip consists of, what you will be taking with you, and your physical health to establish what policies would be appropriate for you.

From there, you can compare quotes of different policies and providers to ensure you have the optimal—yet affordable—cover for your trip to Vietnam.

Does Travel Insurance Cover The Ha-Giang Loop?

Considered one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in the world, the Ha-Giang Loop is a popular tourist activity in Vietnam for adventurous travellers. If the Ha-Giang Loop is one of your goals, you’ll need to make sure you have travel insurance that covers motorcycling.

Occasionally a policy may include this as one of their included ‘sports and activities’, but it is more often the case that you will need to purchase an additional ‘adventure pack’ that is either specific to, or includes, motorsports.

Even so, when purchasing an additional pack to cover motorbikes, you need to be cautious of the conditions. For example, some policies will only cover motorcycle riding if the bike you are riding has an engine under a certain size.

Often, coverage will cease and claims won’t be accepted if you haven’t been wearing the correct safety equipment such as boots and a helmet, or have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?

Your travel insurance policy may exclude some activities that you wish to partake in, unless you can opt-in to purchase an additional adventure pack as explained above in regards to motorbike riding.

Just like with the inclusions of a policy, the exclusions depend on what type of policy you choose, and what provider you go with.

Commonly, however, you won’t be covered for instances where you:

  • Break the law;
  • Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Partake in an excluded activity;
  • Receive medical treatment for a pre-existing condition that was not disclosed;
  • Travel to a ‘Do Not Travel’ destination as outlined by Smarttraveller.

As always, it is essential to read the product disclosure statement (PDS) of your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what you will and won’t be covered for while overseas.

Do I need a visa to travel to Vietnam?

Yes, as of April 2024, Australian tourists still need a visa to travel to Vietnam. This visa can be obtained on arrival, or purchased online prior to travel. The visa takes approximately three days to process online, and the cost depends on how long you intend to stay in the country.

Does international travel insurance cover Covid-19?

Many comprehensive travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19, including medical conditions related to Covid-19 or trip cancellations due to a Covid-19 diagnosis. However, it is not guaranteed that all policies will. It’s important to check your policy’s PDS carefully to understand what it will and will not cover in regards to Covid-19 for both you and your travelling companions.

How much does travel insurance cost for Vietnam?

The cost of your travel insurance for a trip to Vietnam will depend on your age, your health, the activities you wish to partake in, and the length of your stay.

For example, for a 34 year old with no pre-existing medical conditions travelling to Vietnam for two weeks, a policy from some of our top choices for comprehensive travel insurance would cost around $130 (based on quotes from Cover-More , 1Cover , and Fast Cover ).

The prices of these quotes would change depending on a chosen excess, cancellation cover, and any additional coverage options you may choose to purchase such as adventure packs or cruise cover.

Cheap car hire at Moscow Vnukovo airport

Top tips for hiring a car at moscow vnukovo airport.

  • Whether you’re visiting Moscow for a week or a month, getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport (VKO) is the best way to explore the Russian capital. You’ll traverse various parts of the city that aren’t fully accessible by public transport. Self-driving lets you choose the shortest route to your destination and avoid traffic. Renting a car will save you money compared to using a taxi when you look at the overall costs to multiple destinations.
  • Collecting your rental car at Moscow Vnukovo Airport isn’t that complicated. You’ll find several local and international car rental suppliers at the airport with an on-site counter. Car rental desks at VKO are on the ground level in the Arrivals section, Terminal A. Once you get to the airport, head straight to your preferred company’s rental desk. You can also visit the rental desks after booking online. Make sure you carry all the requested documents. After processing, a staff member from the rental company will guide you to the pick-up point outside the terminal. Take your time to inspect the car for any dents or damages. Check the fuel level and make sure your maps are working and in your preferred language since most road signs in Moscow are in Russian.
  • The other benefit of getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport is that you’ll have a smooth return process. Most rental companies will ask you to return the rental car to the exact location you collected it, or the drop-off point stated in your rental contract. What you should pay attention to is the return period. Make sure you return the car on time to avoid the late return penalty fee. You can inform the company early if you’re facing challenges and can’t return the rental car on time. After dropping off the vehicle, conduct a final inspection to check for damages before heading to your rental counter for clearance.
  • Moscow Vnukovo Airport usually gets busy between March to July when most tourists visit for the summer holidays. During this period, car rental bookings are generally high. You can experience long waits at the car rental counter. The airport also gets busy during weekends, special events, holidays, and major conferences in Moscow. We advise you to book in advance for availability and to save money since rates are comparatively pricey during the peak travel season.
  • Book your car hire at Moscow Vnukovo airport at least 4 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Best term life insurance companies

How to find the best term life insurance company for you, frequently asked questions.

Not everyone needs life insurance that covers you for your entire life. For anyone looking for more temporary coverage — like those with young children or a mortgage to pay off — there is term life insurance. Term life insurance provides coverage for a pre-set period of time, which is usually between 10 and 30 years. In exchange for your regularly paid premium, your beneficiaries receive a payout if you die while the policy is active. However, the payout tends to be lower compared to other types of life insurance policies. Bankrate’s guide to the best term life insurance can help you find an insurer that meets your policy needs and budget.

Compare life insurance providers quickly and easily

See which provider is right for you.

Whole life insurance combines life insurance with an investment component.

  • Coverage for life
  • Tax-deferred savings benefit if premiums are paid
  • 3 variations of permanent insurance: whole life, universal life and variable life include investment component

Term life insurance is precisely what the name implies: an insurance policy that is good for a specific term of time.

  • Fixed premium over term
  • No savings benefits
  • Outliving policy or policy cancellation results in no money back

The best term life insurance companies depend on an individual’s needs and preferences. While your quoted premium will typically not vary as much as for life quotes as home or auto insurance, different companies do offer different coverage types and levels. We chose the following companies based on their third-party financial strength and J.D. Power customer satisfaction scores , as well as the policy options and available coverage capacities (the maximum dollar amount a policy can be). It may be helpful to start your research with the following providers:

Why we chose it: State Farm has the highest J.D. Power score for customer satisfaction on our list.

State Farm is our 2024 Bankrate Awards winner for Best Term Life Insurer for the third year in a row thanks to its superior AM Best score and near-nationwide availability. State Farm offers several term insurance products, but its return-of-premium policy option may be particularly helpful for certain term life insurance policyholders. This add-on coverage (also known as a life insurance rider ) lets policyholders choose between a 20- or 30-year payment term and receive a portion of their premiums back if they outlive the term. The return-of-premium policy can be renewed annually until age 95. While the return-of-premium option comes at an additional cost, it also builds cash value , which is rare in a term life insurance policy.

Why we chose it: Mutual of Omaha offers easy online quoting for its term life insurance policies and a wide array of riders for potential policy customization.

If you want to get an idea of how much term life insurance might cost, Mutual of Omaha offers a term life insurance quote tool online. Enter your gender, date of birth, tobacco usage and coverage amount to get a rate. Mutual of Omaha offers a plethora of additional riders that can be added to its term life policies. It should be noted that not every rider can be used with every type of policy. To verify how much coverage you need and which riders can be added to your policy, you may want to consult with an agent. This company also offers a locator service to help you find a financial advisor near you.

Why we chose it: Pacific Life has term life insurance policy options with high coverage levels.

Anyone wanting to tailor their term life insurance with riders or purchase higher coverage limits might consider Pacific Life for term life insurance. The carrier offers two policy options, Promise Term and Elite Term, both of which are convertible to cash value life insurance. Its Promise Term policy offers a minimum amount of $50,000 in coverage, while the Elite Term starts at $750,000 and goes to $3 million or more. Available options include a waiver of premium for disability, as well as a terminal illness and child term rider.

Why we chose it: Northwestern Mutual offers a wide array of informational resources and policy management tools online.

Northwestern Mutual is the largest life insurer in the U.S. by direct premiums written, with just over 7 percent of the total market share. The company has been insuring consumers for more than 150 years. Its term policies allow you to select your coverage period based on either a set amount of years or until a specific age, depending on which option is most suitable for you. Northwestern Mutual plans are also convertible to whole life insurance , meaning you may be able to adjust your policy as your needs evolve. The company’s A++ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best is the highest level available. However, the company only offers one term life insurance rider, so if you want greater policy customization, it may not be the carrier for you.

Why we chose it: Guardian life insurance offers four different term lengths and a long list of potential riders.

Guardian's term life insurance policies are available in four term lengths. The carrier also has a long list of riders for potential policy customization, including a guaranteed renewability clause in the event that you are diagnosed with a serious illness. However, be aware that the company does not offer a network of local agents, so if you prefer to handle your insurance needs face-to-face, you may not be satisfied with the level of service.

There are several factors to consider when shopping for a quality term life insurance policy. Since your life insurance will ultimately be responsible for providing the coverage you want for your family, these considerations may be beneficial to keep in mind when determining which provider is right for you. In addition to policy types, you could consider the following.

Consider customer satisfaction scores and financial strength ratings

Customer satisfaction scores may provide insight for consumers looking to purchase insurance products. These scores reflect how satisfied existing customers may be with the customer service and claims process. You might use these scores to get an idea of how your customer experience could be and which carrier might best fit your expectations.

A life insurance company’s financial strength score reflects its past ability to pay out claims and could help you decide if a company is financially sound. Third-party agencies such as AM Best and S&P publish financial strength ratings for each major provider.

Consider your personal situation

Term life insurance remains active for only a set number of years. To decide whether term life insurance is right for you, it may be helpful to consider what you want coverage for. Do you simply want coverage while your children are young, or would you prefer lifelong coverage?

While term life insurance may be sufficient for temporary needs, like ensuring you could pay off debt and finance college for your kids if you were to pass away, it may not be the right choice if you want coverage for longer. If you need coverage for final expenses or to take care of a lifelong dependent, permanent life insurance may be a better choice. There are several options to choose from, including:

  • Whole life insurance : Whole life offers level premiums and a guaranteed death benefit for life. It also builds cash value over time, which you may be able to access through withdrawals or loans.
  • Universal life insurance : Similar to whole life, universal life offers permanent coverage with more flexibility. You can increase or decrease premium payments or the death benefit if life circumstances change.
  • Final expense life insurance : If you only need a small amount of coverage or have serious health issues, final expense life insurance may be your best option. It works like whole life, but doesn’t require a medical exam. Some policies are guaranteed issue, meaning there is no medical exam or health questions on the application.

Compare multiple quotes

Getting quotes for different types and levels of coverage may help you get an idea of how much you’ll pay for your life insurance. However, keep in mind that term life insurance quotes for the same person and policy type likely won’t vary as much from company to company as auto insurance or home insurance quotes do.

How does term life insurance work?

Term life insurance is a type of life insurance that offers coverage for a set period of time, or term. Term life is usually the most affordable type of life insurance because it only lasts for a specific number of years, usually 10 to 30 years. Unless you buy return-of-premium life insurance, you receive nothing back if you outlive the term. However, many term life insurance policies offer the option to convert to a permanent life insurance policy at the end of the term. Many carriers also provide the option to renew a term life policy annually if you still need coverage past the expiration date.

What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term insurance is designed to provide a death benefit if the insured passes away within the policy term. As the name suggests, term life insurance remains active for a predetermined “term,” which is the window of time that the policyholder chooses — typically between 10 and 30 years. When the term expires, the policyholder stops paying the premiums and the death benefit will no longer be paid out. Whole life insurance , on the other hand, is a type of permanent policy that pays out when the insured dies as long as premiums are paid. It typically contains two parts: a death benefit and a cash value component. Because whole life insurance policies usually have larger payouts, premiums can be two to three times more expensive than a term policy.

What factors impact my life insurance premium?

Life insurance premiums are largely based on mortality risk. In general, the higher the likelihood someone has of passing away while the policy is active, the higher the premium will be. Each insurer has its own underwriting algorithm for calculating your rate. Although each underwriting process is different, your age, gender, weight, health conditions, smoking history and occupation are typically used to help calculate your premium. The amount of coverage that you want to purchase is another key factor in determining the cost of life insurance . For those looking for cheap life insurance , it may be wiser to start shopping at a younger age.

Does having a preexisting condition impact my ability to purchase term life insurance?

Yes, having a preexisting condition may impact your ability to purchase term life insurance. Different conditions may be considered more or less serious by different insurers. If a life insurance provider does approve you for a term life policy with a preexisting condition, your premium may be high to reflect the health risks. Insurance providers may be more likely to approve you if you have conditions that can be managed. For instance, if you have Type 2 diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may be more likely to be approved for term life insurance. If you have a preexisting condition, speaking with a licensed insurance agent may help you navigate your life insurance options.

Is term life insurance cheaper than whole life insurance?

The cost of life insurance will vary based on your policy details and personal rating factors, but term life insurance coverage is typically cheaper than whole life insurance, a type of permanent coverage. This is because whole life insurance is designed to offer coverage for your entire life and guarantee a payout to your beneficiaries, as long as premiums are paid and terms of the policy are met. Term coverage, on the other hand, may not pay out a death benefit if you outlive the policy term and do not renew your coverage. That being said, the cost of life insurance coverage varies based on coverage amount and individual risk rating factors, so a term policy with a high coverage amount for an older individual may cost more than a permanent policy for a younger applicant with a low coverage amount.

Getting international car insurance

Driving your car.

If you plan to drive your car outside of the United States, it's important to make sure you have proper auto insurance coverage before hitting the road. Our auto insurance policies do not extend to cover you in foreign countries, so it's important to research and obtain additional coverage. Check the specific insurance requirements for the country you'll be driving in, as they can vary widely. It's recommended to plan ahead and purchase coverage well in advance of your trip to ensure that you're protected while driving abroad.

International rental car insurance

You should consider purchasing international rental car insurance when renting a car abroad to protect yourself from potential damages or accidents. There are many credit card companies and rental car agencies that offer insurance coverage, but you should read the terms and conditions carefully to make sure you're adequately covered. You should contact your credit card company with questions about coverage and compliance with international auto insurance policies.

Before you drive or rent a car in a foreign country, make sure you know the specific insurance requirements and laws. Some countries may require you to purchase certain types of coverage or provide proof of insurance before you're allowed to drive on their roads. It's also important to note that insurance coverage may vary widely depending on the country, so it's important to do your research in advance.

Be sure to carefully review the international rental car insurance policy before purchasing it to ensure you know what is covered. Some policies may have exclusions or limitations that could leave you vulnerable in certain situations. Also, be aware of any deductibles or out-of-pocket expenses that may apply if the rental car is damaged or in an accident. By doing your research and carefully reviewing your options, you can ensure that you're adequately protected while driving a rental car abroad.

Riding your motorcycle in other countries can be different than in the US. However, like the US each country has their own laws, so be sure to check for things like:

  • Helmet laws
  • Special license plate tags
  • Special insurance requirements

International Property Insurance

GEICO GmbH can help you protect your personal belongings even when you're abroad. Typical things that can be covered are:

  • Smoke damage
  • Theft and more
