Ocean Crossing Excursions

Tabs view cruises.

  • View Cruises

While one of the joys of an ocean crossing is long, blissful days at sea, there’s no shortage of thrilling shore excursions on offer along the way.

Transatlantic crossings often call at the Canary Islands, a verdant, volcanic archipelago packed with natural beauty and cultural interest. On Tenerife, take a tour up snow-capped Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, or taste delicious tapas in Santa Cruz, the island’s cosmopolitan capital. On the more rugged island of La Palma, explore the sheer rock walls, ridges, cascading streams, and dense forest of the Caldera de Taburiente.

If your cruise calls at Madeira, try riding the cable car to the top of Monte, the mountain overlooking the capital, and rumbling down the narrow streets in a wicker toboggan steered by expert drivers. There’s more Portuguese culture in the Azores, where you can taste local wine, join a guided tour of the cobbled streets of Ponta Delgada, or take an expedition into the mountains to admire shimmering crater lakes.

Transatlantic cruises often call at Bermuda, fringed by pink sand beaches. Join a tour to explore the island’s oldest fort, and then head out onto the water at sunset for a romantic catamaran cruise with rum swizzle cocktails.

Some transatlantic itineraries combine the ocean crossing with a port-intensive voyage around the Mediterranean. Immerse yourself in the local culture with a flamenco lesson in Barcelona, or a guided tour of Antoni Gaudí’s famous architecture, including the ornate Sagrada Familia basilica. From La Spezia, you could taste fine Italian wine in a Tuscan farmhouse, or gaze at Michelangelo’s exquisite David in Florence’s Accademia gallery.

On a transpacific cruise, you’ll enjoy the unusual combination of Alaska’s wild, pristine beauty and Japan’s fascinating culture all in one voyage. Hike through the Tongass National Forest from Ketchikan, kayak across serene mountain lakes on the lookout for bears, or try your hand at fishing. Once you reach Japan, there’s a new world to explore; the sapphire-blue lakes of Hokkaido, the intricate Hirosaki Castle, and the exquisite Seibien Garden from Aomori. In Tokyo, don’t miss the impressive Tokyo Tower or the famed Shibuya Crossing, one of the world’s busiest and most orderly crosswalks.

Other transpacific crossings thread their way between Honolulu and Sydney through the unimaginably beautiful tropical islands of Maui, French Polynesia, Samoa, American Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. Learn about coral reef preservation in Pago Pago, American Samoa, and snorkel among shoals of rainbow-colored fish in the emerald lagoons of the Isle of Pines. Bathe in thermal mud pools in Fiji, or fly over the forest canopy on a zipline tour. In Tahiti, explore the lush interior and discover the dazzling colors and landscapes that inspired controversial artist Paul Gauguin.

Many of our transpacific itineraries call at Auckland, New Zealand, where there’s a thrilling range of activities to try, from exploring a movie set to taking the helm of an America’s Cup yacht. Taste wines on Waiheke Island, or visit Waitomo Caves, illuminated only by the tiny lights of millions of glow worms. In the scenic Bay of Islands, you could paddle a Māori war canoe, sample the wares of artisan food producers, or explore historic Russell, New Zealand’s first capital.

Sydney, meanwhile, needs little introduction, with its supermodel glamor. Watch the surfers on Bondi Beach, explore The Rocks, one of the most historic neighborhoods, with an Aboriginal guide, and dare to try the Sydney Harbor Bridge climb. At sundown, set sail across the gorgeous harbor on a paddlewheel boat for dinner with fine Australian wines as the lights slowly come on all over the city.

Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand's largest city -- and the world's largest Polynesian city -- sprawls across an isthmus positioned between two harbors. The City of Sails boasts more boats per capita than any other and draws Kiwis with top surf spots and cultural charms. In the Parnell area, peruse art galleries, antique shops and cafes housed in restored Victorian buildings or venture to the harbor for a leisurely cruise or exhilarating jet boat tour. Just a ferry ride away, Waiheke Island is dotted with beaches and vineyards. Nearby Rangitoto Island is the youngest but largest of the Auckland area's 48 volcanic cones, and a trek to its summit rewards hikers with 360-degree views of emerald seas. Some excursions introduce cruise passengers to Maori culture, while others head to sheep farms for a glimpse of New Zealand's rural life. Hobbiton enchants fans of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" movies, and below the village of Waitomo, a series of caves radiate a glittering blue light due to a rare glowworm species.

New-Zealand Excursions by Celebrity: Reviews, suggestions or opinions

Cool Cruiser

cachouonacruise

Once again, I am hoping to enhance our Australia/New-Zealand trip, by asking travellers who have experienced it, their feed-back. Your reviews, suggestions and opinions, of Celebrity Excursions will be very much appreciated!

We are booked on the Edge for the February 4, 2024, Australia, New-Zealand cruise. It will be our first, and likely last opportunity to travel to that area.

Prior to open this thread, I have done my homework, using Googles, Cruise-Critics including the search engine and the Ports Reviews, without finding as much details as I hoped.

DW and I, without being athletics, are fully mobile and able to walk long distances and climb steps.

What we enjoy: Hands-on experiences with food, culture, sceneries. We're not looking in something too "thrilling" nor too "passive". For example, we have passed the age of going bunjee jumping, yet, we don't enjoy too much sitting on long bus rides, where we only stop for a few photo ops. We're not too interested in museums or "castles" either having had the chance to visit quite a few; unless there is something absolutely unique to discover in that building.

I am trying to mix our experiences a bit to enjoy this trip as much as possible. Our budget is not unlimited, yet, for a unique experience, it can be stretched a bit. This said, I am nervous about some of our selections, and I am concerned to miss something really fabulous.

I have done a preliminary selection of possible excursions. Please, feel free to comment, if you have done these excursions or believe there is something better to do in that port.

Of note, the Celebrity web site is not specific on excursion descriptions regarding the amount of time spent in a bus, a train versus time spent at a specific location. So, this may contribute to my uneasiness.

Dunedin:  Speights Brewery and Dunedin Panorama Tour.

Christchurch: Willowbank Wildlife and Kotane Maori Experience.

Wellington: Zealandia Sanctuary and Cable Car Experience.

Napier: Hawkes Bay Panorama.

Bay of Islands: Glow Worm Caves and Kauri Forest.

Thank-you very much in advance, for your time, support and experience sharing.

you can google the Celebrity tour descriptions and often similar or the same tours offered by third parties (e.g., Viator) will pop up and you can read more detailed descriptions and more importantly customer reviews.

That's helped me pass on many Celebrity tours, which are more expensive anyway.

One tour that appears to be Celebrity exclusive is the Taieri Gorge Train in Dunedin which we booked when Celebrity offered it at 35% off on their recent sale.

The only excursion I have done from your list is the Bay of Islands, Glow worm/forest tour.  It was an enjoyable trip.  Walking up to and through the glow worms caves was good.  I liked the forest part as well as getting to walk through the forest.   I don't know what else to add to describe this excursion.  I think it is a good choice based on your requirements.

If there is a tour to Queenstown from Dunedin, I recommend that! Pricey, but worth it!

We did not take any ship tours on our 14 day cruise from Auckland to Sydney except for the above. In Wellington we booked a private walking tour.

I loved our glow worm experiences that happened on our pre-cruise North Island visit! Our B&B, Te Tiro, had its own private glow worm cave and we also took a cave tour in Waitomo through Spellbound.

Thank-you very much for the suggestion TMLAalum, I will keep it in mind, since it does not yet seem to be offered by Celebrity at this time. We're still 13 months away from the cruise, may be more options will be posted in the future.

I am doing the cruise starting tomorrow, so I have not experienced these excursions, however, Celebrity excursions are very expensive and in Wellington, the cable car and Zealandia can be easily done on your own. The shuttle will drop you off right near the cable car, which you can take to the top, and then there is a free shuttle to Zelandia, so that is one I would, for sure do on my own, rather than pay their exorbitant costs.

Well the highlight of our trip was getting off the ship at Milford sound, taking a boat to shore/small airport and doing an overnight excursion starting at Milford Sound.  I would highly recommend this excursion.  It is a bit pricey, but Milford Sound and area is the most beautiful IMHO.

Wellington: Zealandia Sanctuary and Cable Car Experience was also good.

When we were over in Dunedin in 2020, we booked the Taieri Gorge Train independently (some hundreds of AUD$ cheaper!), directly with the operator - though on this occasion it was departing from Dunedin Railway Station, and not Port Otago where the ship docks.

We took this tour.  It was very nice.  I would recommend.

Yes, Milford sound is so beautiful. I loved our boating experience and hotel stay too. We actually hiked the zigzag up the mountains and down along the Fork River to reach the sound.  The ruggedness, along with the 4 day trek was awesome.  I actually sprained my ankle on day 3; got to take the helicopter out the last day along with many backpacks.  Now that was a very unique experience and worth the pain from my ankle.  We have NZ, AUS and TP booked for March/April/May of '24, but who knows what will happen by then.

I just got off of a Sydney to Auckland with Celebrity, and they offered the Queenstown overnight etc, leaving from Milford Sound since that was where we entered New Zealand.  I think they offer that going either way around NZ.

We also took this train independently.  There was a shuttle from the port into Dunedin.  Locally run and as I recall, for a small fee.  We booked the Seasider train in advance.  Took a few hours to walk around Dunedin.  There was a farmers market at the train station and the station is a must see.  The interior is Royal Doulton tiles.  The train ride passes the port And hugs the coast for a scenic ride.  It turns around and stops at the port on the return, so you may exit there.  It was an easy downhill walk back to the ship.  We ended up missing the Speights Brewery doing this, but they sold the beer on the train, so we did get to taste it.

Enjoy your trip.

If you don't like sitting in a bus, I'd skip anything that says it's a "panoramic" tour. Are you active enough to enjoy bike riding? I can't recall the name of the bike rental company (it's easily googleable), but in Napier we rented bikes from a shop in town, took a gorgeous ride by the water and through the countryside, then did some "winery hopping" by bike. The rental company picked us up at the wineries at the end so no need to bike all the way back. It was simple and one of my favorite excursions I've ever done.

Thank-you very much every one for the very interesting suggestions! Lots of ideas to consider! I really appreciate the feedback!

FYI ...The "sand flies" at the sound are huge and they can bite.  We were there in the month of February!

30 minutes ago, Lastdance said: FYI ...The "sand flies" at the sound are huge and they can bite.  We were there in the month of February!

Thank-you very much for the warning! Are the flies only ashore or also able to get to you on deck? ( My wife is a bit phobic about insects, so I am just trying to assess where in the Sounds is the risk to encounter the flies.).

Thanks again for the warning!

How did you do 4 day? You must not have been on a cruise.

When did you go? I am trying to figure out what I would miss by going & not staying on cruise. …plus, how many actual nights OFF the ship.

why was it so worth it? It sounds like a lot of moving around, not sure we would like that….not young anymore.

1 minute ago, CU64 said: How did you do 4 day? You must not have been on a cruise.

No, I wasn't on a cruise.  My DH and I were hiking into Milford Sound, about 34 miles total.  The rugged terrain and beautiful scenery was absolutely wonderful.  Then, we got to the sound...so worth it, even with the avalanche day 3, causing me to twist my ankle.  The oldest person on the hike was 82 and lived on South Island.  Maybe I did not explain this very well in another post...sorry!

Experience Middle Earth on Auckland Shore Excursions

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. Along with big city fun, there are plenty of outdoor activities and countryside adventures you can have during Auckland shore excursions. It is New Zealand, after all, nicknamed “middle earth” due to its lush terrain made famous in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Speaking of Middle Earth, a visit to Hobbiton is one of the top Auckland shore excursions. Hobbiton is the land where the main character of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is from, and for the filming of the movies, an entire life-sized depiction of Hobbiton was created. Today, it is open to visitors who get to walk through it and pretend they’re Frodo or Bilbo Baggins.

Auckland shore excursions will also take you to see even more notable scenery in the region, including vineyards (where you can do some wine tasting ), deep lakes, towering mountains, and even New Zealand’s youngest volcano.

When it comes to tours that showcase the city itself, popular things to do in Auckland from a cruise include going up to the top of the Sky Tower (the tallest building in Auckland), doing a food tour, visiting the shops, and walking along the picturesque harbor. If you’re a thrill-seeker, sign up for a sky-high bridge climb along the Auckland Harbor Bridge.

Auckland is a departure port for many cruises to Australia and New Zealand . After you disembark from your cruise to Auckland , you can do even more sightseeing and enjoy experiences like visiting the glow worm caves, learning about local Maori culture, visiting an aquarium based on Antarctica, traveling to a historic Victorian town, along with other fun options, before you are dropped off at the airport to start your travels home.

The ship is now 8 years old and therefore not brand spanking new.

I have noted that they have cut back on some things and cutting corners in view the prices they are offering during this credit crunch.

That said it is still an excellent product with good food and a high standard of service.

I am very much looking forward to my trip

The cruise itself was great. We went to Alaska with Celebrity and I don't think there was the choices as far as food went but if you have nothing to compare it with you would be completely satisfied. Make sure you laze in the hydrapool and involve yourself in other activities to make the most of your holiday.

No cruise company is what it was 10 years ago and this is so because there are so many cruise ships competing for the same business.

They continue to each year add new builds to all their fleets. Prices are lower than they have ever been and no doubt you will have noted that Celebrity is pulling out of the NZ/Oz market after April this year. They have done this despite what they say and I had a long talk with the Hotel Director whom I told that in my opinion this is purely for economic reasons. He did not comment on this but I felt sure he agreed.

Celebrity are new to this part of the world whereas P&O and Cunard Princess are not. Due to the credit crunch the Americans are not travelling so much and high airfares make this not the best choice for many of them. Will X return I think so but not for perhaps a good few years.

Celebrity could hardly give this cruise away! There were so many guarantee low prices at all levels on my particular cruise . There were many people upgraded which is not the norm for Celebrity. I cruise solo and these guarantee prices are not open to me even if I were allowed to pay the 200% of that guarantee price. I booked and Paid for a 2A room which is what I got but at 200% of the price quoted. My reason for seeing the H/D was that people who had booked an ocean view went along and said they might cruise with X again and they were upgraded to a balcony. This was their first cruise with X and I am an elite member which means I have to have cruised 10+ times to reach this status. People were prior to and after sailing also even upgraded to Suites.

The H/D has promised to take this to X in Miami at the highest level as in my opinion this is discrimination. He agreed that the issues I raised were very valid and constructive. I said if X did not want we solo cruisers then simply tell us and we can spend our money elsewhere. He did very generously send me champagne fruit and wonderful flowers. He also said several times you do have my card don't you? I intend to write to him in some weeks and see where we are. People do have the ability to change things they just need the will to do so!! I successfully was instrumental in having the fee dropped for joining there Captain's Club. This was achieved not by writing to X but in raising it with the Captain whilst on X. 4 Days later on the flight back we were all given a letter saying it was complimentary. This was from head office and those of us who paid the fee became founder members and we got the fee back.

All this does not answer your question. Celebrity has made cuts and there is not as much choice in menu's etc 3 sweets plus numerous ice creams at dinner instead of maybe 5 desserts. Food quality is still good and the beef was better on this cruise than on the cruise I did on Summit in August in the Med.

The Ship is now 10 years old and is a little worn round the edges. This is not a problem for me and I have cruised on Millennium 4 times previously. If y ou want a brand new spanking ship then book the Soltice!

That said I had a wonderful cruise but the weather for me was a disappointment as I had expected it to be warmer. Spring in NZ is like summer here somewhat unpredictable. What has been said about excursions is correct, The Ship excursions are very expensive. I did the Rotorua trip using Des from Indigenous tours which I booked with a small group of us who posted on cruise critic. You can look at the Roll Call for you cruise and find a lot of good information also reviews. Des is Maori and he gave us a very different experience. We avoided all the crowds of some of the areas as he tailored the cruise to what we wanted and also timed it better. He is a fantastic guide and very funny. Also we eventually paid him as we were almost back at the ship. He charged us $165 NZ which was less than half the price of the Ship tour. I would highly recommend him. We were in 2 mini buses so just a very small group. IT RAINED but we had a great day and a fantastic meal cooked by the people (Family) who did the show and they were just great.

I didn't do other tours in NZ.

In Melbourne I booked the Melbourne Greeter service which is a tour by local volunteers who will take you round their city and show you the sights and in my group there were only 3 of us. Our guide was a University Lecturer and he was great. They don't make any charge for this and are not allowed to even accept a tip for the service. It lasted just over 2 hours and started from the Tourist Office.

In Melbourne using this site I was encouraged to go ashore in Melbourne at night (we didn't arrive there until 8pm) I took the advice and went off alone got off the tram at the Casino and really loved the atmosphere of walking along this lovely river Yarrow with all the restaurants and bars etc. Even jumped into a pub in a shopping Mall where I heard Irish music. The singer was singing Carrickfergus a favourite of mine. I stood and listened and came out again. I crossed the bridge into the city and took the tram back to the ship at no time feeling unsafe. It had been 44 years since I was in Melbourne

Sydney I adore last visit 14 years ago. I was told by the Captain that the Pilot would be coming aboard at 5.15 although the Guest Relations said 6am was early enough for the sail in. I jumped out of bed at 5.10am to see the bridge in the distance. Cold at that early hour but camera in hand it was a wonderful experience sailing in. I was on the Port side so the Opera House was my view. I felt I could almost touch it. I could have gone on deck and had a view of both the bridge and the Opera house but I had sailed into Sydney before many years ago 1963. If you don't have a balcony then up on deck is the place to be.

We were docked in Circular Quay and what a wonderful place to be. Being there overnight meant we has all the time in the world to just drink it all in. I did the ferry to Manly at a low cost as the Harbour Tours are expensive and I had done this before in any case. I walked the Rocks and noted changes from my past time. I walked into the city centre with all the lovely Christmas decorations etc. I did Darling Harbour. Some went to the Blue Mountains which to me if you have never been in Sydney before is a waste my opinion.

I didn't even want to spend 2+ hours in the dining room for dinner that final night but rather enjoy Sydney from the Ship in the darkness with all the lights etc. Went only to see my Waiters and also to say goodbye to the dinner friends. Some had gone to the Opera House to see the Messiah.

I sat on my balcony and there was a wonderful firework display at around 10pm, There was a wedding being held that day at the Opera Houses so think this was the reason.

I then went on deck to the Stern and had the most wonderful view of both the Harbour Bridge and the Opera house.

What I didn't know was that 10 minutes after I put my lights out at 12MD there was a power cut 10 minutes later which was not repaired until the next morning when I awoke with an announcement saying the power was restored and the water was a little brown. I just wondered what had happened to my breakfast. No hot food but breakfast only in the Island Cafe.

I didn't know the story until I read a long report in my Cruise Critic Roll Call and you should read it.

Also we were not able to get into Milford Sound as there were high winds and despite several attempt on the Captain and the Pilot made a decision it was too dangerous.

35 passengers including the Food and Beverage Manager were left ashore (They were taking a land based excursion with an overnight stay)

They rejoined the ship in Melbourne. Again you can read how well they were looked after by Celebrity spending 2 nights in different city's in NZ Flying to Sydney and then Melbourne.

This may seem long winded but I do hope it gives you some insight into my trip. I extended my holiday by flying to Perth WA and just returned yesterday the 13th January. I left the UK on the 17th November staying 2 nights at the Ritz in Singapore and had afternoon tea at Raffles, I then spent a further 2 nights in Auckland prior to the cruise . 8 weeks and 1 day holiday can't be bad especially in this UK freezing weather.

I had wonderful advice from people on these boards re all the places I was visiting and I am sure you will too.

Nothing else planned as I am having surgery on the 4th Feb. but believe me it won't be too long until I am back on the high seas continuing my travels.

I acquired an nickname CruZin Susan which is why these days I sign Sue.
