Board your submarine ready for an adventure into the depths of the ocean in search of fish, sharks and other sea creatures...

Boarding the submarine

Boarding the submarine

Deep Sea Adventure is a rethemed version of Atlantis Submarine Voyage which opened at Legoland in 2011.

The ride takes visitors on an adventure far below the surface of the ocean, diving in a submarine toward the ocean depths. On the way, they encounter a variety of sharks, rays, fish and other sea creatures.

Each submarine holds 14 people for the duration of the four minute journey. Special effects including bubbles make it feel like the submarine dives under the water, but in reality only the bottom part of the ride vehicle in submerged at any time. Windows low down on the bottom half of the submarine help with the illusion, but can also give adults a bit of a crick in the neck!

In the original Atlantis Submarine Voyage, a story played out during the ride which took guests on a journey in search of the lost city of Atlantis. Audio narration and music brought this to life, and encouraged visitors to interact with large buttons and video displays. Unfortunately, all this has been removed during the retheme into Deep Sea Adventure. Instead, the submarine travels silently through the aquarium, making the whole experience rather formal and boring compared to the fun of the original.

LEGOLAND Windsor will open a brand new attraction for the 2011 season, combining a dark ride with Sea Life marine exhibits in a first-of-its-kind concept dubbed Atlantis Submarine Voyage. Owner Merlin's attempt to merge two of its most lucrative properties is an intriguing prospect - but will it result in a great new addition to the family-friendly park?

Merlin Entertainments Group operates an array of Sea Life centres and theme parks around the world, including multiple LEGOLAND parks. It has previously located smaller Sea Life attractions in its theme parks, including the Sharkbait Reef aquarium at Alton Towers. However, Atlantis Submarine Voyage represents the company's first attempt to incorporate the Sea Life brand into an actual ride - and could be a sign of things to come at the chain's other parks if it proves a success.

So far, LEGOLAND Windsor has announced few details or images of its plans for Atlantis Submarine Voyage, simply describing the ride on its official website as a "groundbreaking attraction" that is due to open in 2011. However, a planning application submitted to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in May revealed the key elements of the new ride. Let's take a look at what's in store for visitors to the park in 2011.

Expanding Adventure Land

Project Atlantis front view

Construction is already underway on Atlantis Submarine Voyage in the Adventure Land zone of LEGOLAND Windsor, on the site of the former picnic area between Dino Safari and Dino Dipper. The latter ride will be relocated to make room for the building that will house the new attraction, which looks set to become a major landmark within the park.

Atlantis Submarine Voyage concept art

The building's facade will feature a pyramid as its centrepiece, reflecting the importance of the "Pyramid Map" to Atlantis in the plot of the LEGO Atlantis movie. The enormous water tanks that will house a variety of marine life will be located underground in order to enable the building's elevation to be reduced, helping to secure planning permission for its construction.

Navigating through Atlantis

Project Atlantis building plans

Once inside the Atlantis building, guests will board one of 8 vehicles which travel on rails in a loop through a series of marine exhibits. Riders will be accompanied by an on-board audio system that is likely to provide details of the marine creatures in each exhibit, as well as narrating the plot. According to LEGOLAND, the same ride system is in use at a park in California, although it is not known which one. The vehicles will be themed around the Undersea Explorer submarine that plays a key role in the LEGO Atlantis movie, and will hold up to 14 people each.

LEGOLAND revealed in its supporting information for the planning application that the ride building will house a one million litre tropical fish tank, touch pools and other interactive areas. This suggests that the ride will be accompanied by walk-through sections, with the plans appearing to show these being located at the end of the ride itself close to the building's exit.

Joining the Atlantis Crew

The storyline of LEGOLAND Windsor's new attraction is likely to close match that of LEGO Atlantis - The Movie, an animated feature that was produced to promote the Atlantis-themed range of LEGO toys. The light-hearted movie can be watched via the LEGO Atlantis website.

The heroes of the the movie (and presumably the attraction as well) are the Atlantis Crew, a deep sea salvage team who scour the ocean for treasure. The crew discover the Pyramid Map, a mysterious artefact which appears to hold the key to finding the mythical lost underwater city of Atlantis. The movie tells the story of their quest to find it, encountering several evil Atlantis Warriors along the way (including a shark). The ride's plot is set to match this, with guests passing through a LEGO recreation of Atlantis, which will be "guarded" by live sharks.

LEGOLAND Billund Atlantis attraction

Atlantis Submarine Voyage will share its theme with an existing attraction at Denmark's LEGOLAND Billund. The Danish version differs from the the planned attraction at LEGOLAND Windsor, in that it does not include a dark ride transit system. Instead, riders watch a pre-show on-board a "submarine", before walking through a number of marine exhibits including a large underwater tunnel. The plot for the attraction closely follows the movie, with divers leading the way to Atlantis.

Striking gold

LEGO Atlantis toy box

Unsurprisingly for a theme park that is based entirely on a range of toys, LEGOLAND Windsor has proven extremely adept at encouraging kids to beg their parents for expensive "souvenirs" in its many shops. The symbolism of the treasure-filled lost city of Atlantis is particularly apt for its new attraction, which is sure to be accompanied by an extensive store selling the recently-launched LEGO Atlantis range. The park may well have struck gold with its new concept.

What sort of toys can kids of all ages expect to find in Atlantis Submarine Voyage's retail outlet? A range of vehicles (such as the Undersea Explorer and the Neptune Carrier) seen in the movie will line the shelves, alongside a number of buildings such as the Atlantis Exploration HQ. The Atlantis Crew themselves and their Atlantis Warrior enemies will also be available - with the full LEGO Atlantis range shown on LEGO's website.

Our thoughts

We're excited by the concept behind Atlantis Submarine Voyage. Although we've seen Sea Life attractions make their way into Merlin's theme parks before, it's great to see the company looking to offer a ride experience rather than just a scaled-down version of its other Sea Life centres. The LEGO Atlantis tie-in is also a good move, and should mean that the ride will have a coherent storyline rather than simply being an on-rails version of a standard walk-through aquarium.

Our only major concern over Atlantis Submarine Voyage from the plans seen to date is over the ride's capacity. Although on-rails dark rides can often handle large number of guests per hour due to their continuous-loading systems, the limited number of cars on the new attraction is a worry. It's too early to judge at this stage (the cars may hold large numbers of guests each), but we hope that LEGOLAND has learned lessons from some of its most popular attractions (Driving School in particular), which process guests at agonisingly slow pace.

If Merlin can execute well on a great idea, then Atlantis Submarine Voyage should be a strong addition to LEGOLAND Windsor's line-up, appealing to both the park's young target audience and their parents. It could even mark the start of a new trend in Merlin's parks - perhaps its Madame Tussauds waxworks brand is next-in-line for the in-park ride treatment? We'll be visiting LEGOLAND Windsor in 2011 to see if Atlantis Submarine Voyage can live up to our lofty expectations.

Atlantis Submarine Voyage

legoland windsor resort atlantis submarine voyage

When Legoland Windsor decided to add an underwater ride – the first at any Lego park worldwide – it didn’t have to look far for marine expertise. Park World takes a submarine voyage with Sea Life.

Atlantis Submarine Voyage is latest and most elaborate Legoland attraction to exploit the parks’ connection with Sea Life – the world’s leading aquarium brand – as part of the Merlin Entertainments portfolio. Drawing upon children’s fascination with the sea and combining it with a sub-aqua ride system by Mack, it also integrates the Lego Atlantis toy range. The result is a fun, educational family experience that is perfectly “on brand” as part of the Legoland offer.

“There is a lot of brand synergy in there,” acknowledges Sue Kemp, divisional director for the park near London. “The fact that both attractions [Legoland and Sea Life] are part of Merlin Entertainments and we as a company have a very strong ethical, conservation and educational focus, meant it was just a perfect fit. Obviously the Lego toy range helped too.”

After several weeks’ soft opening, the new attraction was officially unveiled in Windsor last month, where it represents an £8 million ($13m/€9m) chunk of the ongoing £30 million ($50m/€34m) being ploughed into the British park as it moves towards a destination resort model.

Finding Lego

Industry observers will be quick to realise that Atlantis Submarine Voyage bears several similarities to Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland in California. You may even choose to call it Finding Lego. Its routes with Merlin, however, can be traced to Legoland Billund in Denmark and Legoland Deutschland, which each feature an aquarium attraction called Atlantis by Sea Life.

The experience In Billund begins with a pre show inside a “submarine,” however guests travel beneath the water on a moving walkway inside a glass tunnel, a signature attraction of most Sea Life centres. At Legoland Windsor, the submarine itself is the mode of transport.

Boarding above “sea level,” passengers climb down inside the 14-seater vessels, which are driven on overhead rails, and prepare for a four-and-a-half minute voyage along 75-metres of track through a doughnut-shaped tank. A “bubble curtain” creates the illusion of the submarines diving deep into the ocean, as guests enjoy a magical marine journey. Peering out through the windows in the bottom of each sub, they see over 50 species of sharks, ray and tropical fish, as well around 100 Atlantis-themed Lego figures.

“The ride system is not completely new as such, however it’s never been done through water like this before with all the creatures and Lego models in the tank,” notes Kemp. “As usual we went through the tender process and Mack came up with the best concept with the most efficient and reliable ride system. Reliability and the safety of our guests are obviously very important for a theme park like us.”

As the 10th most visited park in Europe last year, with almost two million guests, capacity was also a significant issue: “We have managed to accomodate about 1,200 guests, but on average the throughput is about 1,000 an hour,” reveals Kemp. “That makes it one of the bigger capacity-eating rides on the park.”

Much like many of Mack’s dark rides, Atlantis Submarine Voyage employs an omni-moving transport system, meaning the ride vehicles do not stop during loading/unloading except in the case of failure, evacuation, or for the access of disabled guests (one specially equipped submarine is included among a fleet of eight).

Fishy Friends

Inside the 1-million-litre capacity aquarium at the heart of the attraction are over 2,500 captive bred fish, sourced primarily from Marine Aquarium Counci-certified fisheries in the south west of England. One of the largest species featured is the Zebra Shark, also known as Leopard Sharks due to their changing stripes/spots, and which grow to an average of three-metres long. The last thing to be added were the submarines.

“The fish and sharks settled in well into their new surroundings and soon got used to the submarines and lots of astonished faces looking at them,” explains aquarium curator Iain Grieves, “but unnatural noises can startle them, so a lot of engineering has gone into achieving silent running.”

2028.photo.3

As well as a themed area of queue line immediately before the ride, Atlantis also includes a “discovery zone” once guests disembark, featuring fish tanks and touch pools. For those that take the time to explore this part of the attraction, this takes the total experience to around 10 minutes. Located close to a lake in a relatively undeveloped part of the park, the new attraction provides a welcome spot for families to dwell and in recognition of this, new parent and child toilet facilities have been added close by.

Elsewhere in the park, many of the Lego models have been cleaned and repaired over the winter and there’s also a new 500-seat capacity pizza and pasta restaurant, where an all-inclusive buffet offer seems to be going down well with families.

There has, concedes Kemp, been some resistance to the new £2 [$3.20/€2.20] car parking charge, but nevertheless she feels most guests are happy to tolerate it: “I think there is a general understanding that it is not unusual to pay for parking now wherever you go, not just Merlin attractions. A lot of people spend their leisure time shopping, and that is far more expensive to park than it is here. In fact, it costs more to park in Windsor for one hour that it does to park here all day, and we utilise that money to upgrade and renovate our parking facilities.”

Hotels & Coasters

As from 2012, guests will be able to make the most of the park and surrounding attractions in Windsor and West London by staying at Hotel Legoland, the world’s first purpose-built Lego-themed hotel, currently taking shape on the edge of the park, close to Atlantis.

“Not just from a Legoland perspective, but also from a group perspective, it makes sense to provide our own accommodation [other nearby Merlin attractions include Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and the group’s various central London outlets]. There is only one other Legoland hotel in the world, at Billund, and that was originally a conference centre. This is the first that will be built bespoke, it will be highly themed, and really will be the ultimate sleepover for our guests.”

With millions still to be spent at this popular British park over the years to come, guests can expect more exciting projects. “Certainly in 2014 and 2015 we are looking at bigger product to go into the park,” reveals Kemp. “We haven’t finalised what that will be yet, but it will be ride product, and certainly we will be looking at a new rollercoaster before 2015.”

Brickingham Palace

“We had an excellent start to the season thanks to the weather and a special Star Wars event,” notes Legoland Windsor divisional director Sue Kemp. “Now, with the opening of Atlantis Submarine Voyage we have definitely seen a growth in visitor numbers.”

Also popular with guests is a cheeky royal wedding scene in the park’s Miniland version of Buckingham Palace (pictured). “It’s a little bit quirky, “ adds Kemp, “as a theme park I think we can have a bit of fun with it.”

Building on the success of events earlier in the season, a Star Wars cluster of models will be added to Miniland for 2012, something which has been implemented successfully this year at the three other Legoland parks worldwide.

New for 2011, a World-First ride at LEGOLAND Windsor! Climb aboard a LEGO submarine, and prepare to dive to the bottom of the ocean where you will interact with fishes, sharks and rays galore! A fantastic, one-of-a-kind attraction which brings together LEGOLAND, SEA LIFE and an innovative new ride system in one fantastic attraction.

What is it?

  • A SEA LIFE centre containing a Mack suspended part-submerged transit system which travels through a 1 million litre ocean tank (in other words, a submarine ride through a massive aquarium!)
  • Opened 20th May 2011
  • Eight submarines, 14 guests per submarine
  • Q-Bot reservations available (at an additional cost)

What does it do?

Once you enter the station area, you must quickly board your submarine before departing into the depths of the ocean. As you depart, bubbles swirl across the portholes, and suddenly you can see underwater!

Watch as fish, rays and sharks swim all around your vessel, and be prepared for some funny goings on with the on-board computer - you may need to help save the mission!

On your return to terra-firma, take a look at some smaller fish on display, and have a go at allowing shrimps to clear the dead skin off your fingers!

Restrictions?

  • Guests under 1.3m tall must be accompanied by an adult

For an in-depth review, take a look at CLLW's Opening Day Trip Report . However, overall, Atlantis Submarine Voyage is clearly a massive success! The theming is great, the concept (though it could be tweaked a little) is excellent, and the ride hardware is excellent. What more could you ask for? No queues for LEGOLAND's newest ride, I hear you cry? Well, you’re not going to be queuing for long. You’re really not going to be queuing for long. This thing is a people-muncher and then some, with a theoretical maximum throughput of just over 1400!

A truly excellent addition to the park, and indeed the best addition to LEGOLAND Windsor's line up in a long time!

More pictures coming soon!

LEGOLAND Windsor has today announced that an exciting multi-million pound attraction – Atlantis Submarine Voyage – will be unveiled at the theme park this summer.

Forming part of a wider £30 million investment from parent company, the Merlin Entertainments Group, Atlantis Submarine Voyage will be an impressive £8 million attraction and the first LEGO-themed underwater ride in the world.

The new attraction is expected to create over 50 jobs for the Windsor theme park, with three specialist jobs for the aquarium; one displays curator and two aquarists.

Sue Kemp , Divisional Director of LEGOLAND Windsor, comments: “This is LEGOLAND Windsor’s biggest attraction investment ever by the Merlin Entertainments Group and is testament to the continued success of the park. Atlantis Submarine Voyage represents a unique partnering of a LEGOLAND park with SEA LIFE, Merlin’s global number one aquarium brand and will offer families something they’ve never seen before. She continued: We have the benefit of working with an experienced team whose talents will be showcased by this breathtaking attraction. I’m confident that Atlantis Submarine Voyage will be a must-visit attraction for guests of all ages who’ll be enchanted by this fascinating underwater adventure.”

Marine experts based at the Windsor attraction will be working with SEA LIFE colleagues at the forefront of global marine conservation. Regular research projects will be carried out at the new aquarium and education programmes will also be offered. These will encourage families and school groups to consider the issues that impact on aquatic life by getting involved in campaigning to preserve marine habitats and protect endangered species.

LEGOLAND Windsor opens its doors on Friday 1st April 2011 and as part of its 15th birthday celebrations this year the park will be holding a LEGO Star Wars themed After Dark laser show for the Easter holidays. In March 2012 the theme park will open a new 150 bedroom LEGOLAND Hotel, transforming LEGOLAND Windsor into a destination resort in order to meet the growing demand from visitors wanting to extend their stay at the park.
