Most Affordable Holidays for South African Tourists

What are the most affordable holiday destinations for South African tourists?

When it comes to  affordable countries  to visit from South Africa it’s also good to look at the prices of expenses like; drinks, meals and excursions when you are visiting. Thailand is a great option in this sense as eating out and experiencing the tourist sites is relatively inexpensive. You can easily have a seafood dinner for two for under R300.00 and eating freshly prepared fruit and other street food is extremely cheap!

What is the cheapest country in Europe to visit?

If you think Europe is way too expensive, think again. Although our rand may be weak and yes, we cannot compare it to the Euro, BUT there are still some European destinations that won’t break the bank.

If you want to visit Europe on a budget, then nothing beats Portugal!

It is one of Western Europe’s most affordable countries and though it seems super exotic and Mediterranean, it’s not as expensive as Italy and Spain. Lisbon and Porto both offer a great city break, but Porto is comparatively a bit cheaper than Lisbon, in terms of both accommodation and food. Porto is similar to Cape Town with vineyards aplenty and a bustling local food scene and coffee obsession.

It’s hard to believe that you could be spending a week overlooking a river, sipping port and other wines and sampling local cheeses while watching life go by. Make sure you try the local pastries (especially pasteis de nata) and freshly squeezed orange juice, which is available at every corner. There are often relatively cheap flight deals available to Portugal and the big bonus is that the flight isn’t really all that long, and an even bigger bonus is there’s no appreciable time zone jump so jet lag doesn’t come into play at all.

How do you describe India in simple terms?  Well, it’s impossible!  When you step off the plane your senses are almost immediate assaulted - in the best way possible!  There’s something intoxicating about the energy of the country; from the craziness of trying to cross roads between swerving buses, motorbikes and taxis to the sounds of street sellers shouting out their wares, the smells of curries and chapatis (a.k.a rotis or flat bread) wafting through the air and the ever-present children running rampant through the busy streets.  India is a different kind of magical.   It is simultaneously glitzy and gritty, down to earth yet completely over the top but most of all, it’s a destination for the dedicated traveller rather than as a tourist.

Of course tourist areas like Goa are typically more expensive than somewhere like Mumbai or Delhi, but India is on the whole a fairly affordable destination.

Another great option is Croatia for a beautiful and budget friendly Europe escape. Croatia is one of the most exciting travel destinations out there and offers some reasonable holiday packages from South Africa. The dramatic Dalmatian Coast promises supreme beach holidays, while Croatia’s delightful cities like Split and Dubrovnik will please culture and history buffs. With some 1,000 outlying islands in the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is a popular yacht destination.

Why not visit Hungary? The life here is laidback and enviable, with superb food, excellent museums, and a vibrant atmosphere. Hungary is also renowned for its picture-perfect scenery, with undulating hills, lakes, farmlands and vineyards. It boasts plenty of history, too, making it a stunning place to explore.

What is the most affordable place to visit nearby?

If you wish to stay a little closer to home, Namibia is a destination that offers something for everyone that can easily be enjoyed on a budget. The Namib desert creates an opportunity for desert adventure activities like 4×4 or quad bike tours, sandboarding as well as fishing, boating and coastal tours. In recent years South Africans are sharing the excitement about travelling to the neighbouring country and Namibia has seen an uptake in visitors from SA partly because of the proximity and similar exchange rate.

No matter if you want to travel near or far we have some of the best budget holiday destinations right here for you to choose from.

Cheapest African countries to visit in 2024

In distant Africa, far from Western civilization, many beautiful, untold places have been preserved in all corners of the continent: the mysterious and unconquerable Sahara Desert, the stunning forests of Ethiopia, and the famous African savannah, to name a few.

If you start thinking about traveling to Africa, don’t hesitate – just go! You will have a unique opportunity to see what is hidden from human eyes in the depths of this vast continent for a relatively small sum of money. The exchange rates in some African countries are beneficial for tourists, affordable flight fares can be found, and there’s a wide range of reasonably priced accommodation options.

Inexperienced tourists mistakenly think that Africa is still an unchartered and dangerous continent. But Africa is very diverse. Everything changes from region to region-culture, climate, cuisine, and standard of living. It would be wrong to label the entire continent as dangerous. Sandy beaches are another point in favor of Hurghada-although the corals happen to create certain inconveniences.

Seclusion at a low price is guaranteed in Safaga

Unlike Hurghada, the resort of Safaga is not so popular – so it doesn’t receive as many touristy crowds. Even though the city is not very big, the amount of entertainment is quite diverse: ancient sites, remarkable places for diving and windsurfing, necessary conditions for fishing, and the sophistication of gourmet street food and seafood cuisine. Here, you can rest and get healthier by taking advantage of the sand known to have healing properties, and the unique microclimate helps people cope with skin diseases.

Go to Cairo to travel back in time

Cairo is a treasure for anyone who travels to Egypt. The alleys here are reminiscent of the Middle Ages, making you feel like you have traveled back in time.

If you like budget-friendly traveling, you’ll definitely love the shopping in Cairo as well. Visit the Khan el-Khalili market, where you can buy high-quality leather goods, brass lampshades, signature Egyptian jewelry boxes, and more-all at low prices. Drinking Turkish coffee or mint tea at Fishawy Café is one of the best ways to end your shopping trip.

Ghana – The right destination for you if you think nothing can amaze you

Ghana is a highly interesting destination, even for those who have already visited the most famous African countries and want to experience somewhere truly colorful.

By European and American standards, this country is inexpensive. In addition, Ghana is very safe compared to many other countries in Africa.

Best places to visit in Ghana

Ghana is a mix of the beliefs and traditions of many African tribes, refined over the colonial years. Here are the most outstanding vacation spots for you to check out.

See how African originality supplanted its European past in Accra

Ghana and its capital Accra were significantly influenced by Europe during the era of colonization, and you can see it everywhere. When you go shopping at Makola Market or Kaneshie Market, you feel the primal African colors and friendliness. Trotro parks, Sly Fox gardens, and Labadi Lorry Park show you a rich abundance of exotic plants. And local beaches like La Pleasure Beach and Labadi Beach are also unique due to the generous African sun.

Akosombo – Dive deeper into Ghanaian culture

The town of Akosombo is not as large and developed, but here you can experience almost all kinds of water activities. In addition, local residents will involve you in the local routines and traditions with great pleasure.

Enjoy the sea and local art in Kokrobite

The local atmosphere of Inhambane will capture you

The province of Inhambane is one of the main tourist attractions of the country. To experience the local vibes, board a dhow (a traditional Arabic sailboat) and take a trip to the beautiful islands of the Bazaruto archipelago – a natural wonder on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Maputo – The capital of Mozambique will surprise you

When travelers go to the capital of Mozambique, they do not expect to see such a dynamic seaside city that is full of energy and life. The wide avenues are lined with markets, shops, and interesting architecture that mixes the old colonial period with modernism.

South Africa – One of the most advanced African countries to visit

South Africa is one of the richest countries on the African continent (but it’s still affordable for the average tourist). A country of contrasts, it combines the primeval and the modern. Stunning beaches, magnificent mountains, an array of forms of wildlife, and other unique sites in South Africa amaze travelers from all over the world every year.

Best places to visit in South Africa

See below for the best and cheapest places that you need to visit when you’re in South Africa.

Sun City – Visit African Las Vegas at African prices

The name of Sun City speaks for itself. Imagine what a cool holiday waits for you at a green oasis in the middle of an extinct volcano, where the best artists, architects, designers, and builders have created a truly ideal world for recreation and entertainment.

After admiring the local sites, try your luck at winning a fortune at the Sun City Casino. It is called an African Las Vegas for a reason, but it’s much more affordable.

Durban – Are you brave enough to swim with sharks?

Durban, the second biggest city in South Africa, will offer you the best time, with its charming sandy beaches. It is the diving capital of South Africa, and the coral reefs are fantastic here. The fearless usually opt to swim with sharks: the number of sharks per capita is higher here than anywhere else in the world.

As for cultural Durban, do not skip the old part of the city and its Indian quarter – which is one of the most remarkable places with its majestic mosque, considered the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere.

Cape Town – This city might become the most beautiful in the world

Over the last five years, Cape Town has appeared on the destination lists of more and more travel agencies. And it’s no wonder since its reasonable local prices, together with a harbor and world-famous sites like the Cape of Good Hope and The Company’s Garden, stun everyone.

Let’s see where to go in Kenya for a beach holiday, cultural vacations, and exciting adventures.

Lamu – A paradise relaxation at a good price

Relaxing, secluded, contemplative beach holidays in Kenya can be had in Lamu. Enjoy the diving, boat trips through mangroves, and walking promenades through quiet streets with local architecture. What adds to Lamu’s charm is that cars are absent.

Admire the historical atmosphere of Malindi without sacrificing the service

Malindi boasts excellent tourist infrastructure paired with a remarkably preserved historic local atmosphere. European top-rated hotels and an abundance of entertainment provide a great place to rest after browsing the narrow, ancient quarters with medieval buildings.

Nairobi – No sea, but great facilities for family holidays

Nairobi, the capital of the Republic of Kenya, has no sea. Nevertheless, it has the best conditions for outdoor recreation with children. Go to the Capital National Park, where famous safari tours set off from. Many African museums, the Giraffe Center, an orphanage for elephants, and beautiful skyscrapers can also be found here!

9 cheapest countries to travel in africa.

9 Budget Friendly Countries to Travel in Africa

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I really think that most people have a strong perception that travelling in Africa is cheap.

And I’m guessing this is something to do with the economic disadvantage many of the countries in this continent suffer, coupled with the presumption that places where less tourists go tend to be cheaper.

But sadly, I’m here to bring you the news that it’s just not the case. Or at least not always.

Indeed many travellers tend to be shocked by the costs of travelling in Africa, where lack of infrastructure, remote locations, few tourist numbers, a high risk backdrop and let’s be honest, often corruption, can all hike the prices.

This isn’t to say if you do many things the local way, such as buses and food, you can travel cheaply in Africa.

It’s just that if you want to enjoy some of the experiences that are more geared towards tourists – like hotel or lodge stays, safaris or adrenaline sports (which let’s be honest most of us do) this can really send your budget soaring.

But fear not!

As you know, I love Africa travel and have adventured across 16 nations in this continent (with more planned of course).

What this means, is that I have a fair idea of the real costs of travelling this continent, and with that experience behind me I’m bringing you this list of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa… so here’s my top 9!

Morocco, Chefchaouen, Mountains

We’re going to kick off this list in Northern Africa because, for tourists at least, this can be the cheapest end of the continent.

And straight into number 1, it’s that classic budget traveller favourite, Morocco.

Edging the Mediterranean, Morocco is only a short distance from Spain and, as such, is incredibly cheap to get to, either care of a budget flight or a (more ecological) train and boat journey from Europe .

TOP BUDGET TIP: I always use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights, including via budget airlines, and use Trainline to find the cheapest trains / buses across Europe.

This is the first reason Morocco is on this list.

But the bargains don’t end there, because Morocco is also super cheap to travel in once you arrive.

Dorm beds in hostels can be picked up across the country for as little as £5 / $6 USD and usually include a free breakfast.

In addition, local food in restaurants and cafes, such a delicious vegetable tagine, can be found for around 40-80 Dirham, which is about £2 / $3 USD, while a delicious mint tea or coffee will set you back just 5-10 Dirham, aka under a pound / dollar.

Trains and local buses are easy and cheap to use across the country too and even car rental is affordable, which makes exploring the diverse landscape and ancient cities of this country very accessible.

Learning more about Morocco’s rich culture is also easy with museum entries and local hammam experiences cost only around 10-20 Dirham – again around a pound or a dollar.

What can start to hike prices in Morocco however are tours, such as those to the Sahara or into the Atlas Mountains. The key here is joining a budget group tour, doing as much as you can via local transport and then haggling as much as you can!

Here’s a well priced tour overnight camel tour to Erg Chebbi Dunes that will give you some idea of costs

And the haggling doesn’t stop there!

No one can visit Morocco without picking a few souvenirs, so hone those skills well enough and you can pick up some real bargains!

All in all, Morocco is definitely one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa and here’s my list of the 21 best things to do in this fabulously diverse country.

Morocco Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $40 USD

Tunisia, El Djem, Architecture

And sticking with the North African theme, although moving slightly east, we come to Tunisia, another definite spot on any list of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa.

Long a preferred package destination for many European travellers, Tunisia has sadly experienced a great amount of civil and political unrest in recent years that seriously put traditional tourists off.

As such the industry near-collapsed and despite peace and stability once again having been largely restored, Tunisia’s travel title as a safe destination has not.

While extremely unfortunate, this does mean travel to and within Tunisia is extremely cheap right now and budget travellers can have an amazing time discovering this nation’s beautiful landscapes and dazzling deserts.

Cheap airline flights can be picked up from across Europe, or for those looking to cut their carbon footprints, boats to Sicily in Italy are an easy and short ride.

Budget guesthouses in Tunisia can be found for as little as £10 / $12 USD per night per double, while food at local eateries costs around only £1-3 / $2-4 USD.

Visits to some of the historical sights in Tunisia are a bargain, with entrance to El Jem, for example, setting you back just £6 / $5 USD and you can easily take local shared minibuses, known as a louage, around the country for a few dollars.

It’s totally possible to avoid more expensive organised tours in Tunisia and you should do this if you want to keep your budget low, because they normally involve a private driver which can cost up to £100 / $130 USD day.

Instead, tour guides for specific attractions can be sought out in local areas for around £15 / $13 USD.

Tunisia Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD

Egypt, Luxor, Temple of Hatshepsut

And moving further east still, we come to Egypt, absolutely one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa, if not the whole world!

Seriously, out of all the places I’ve been, there’s no question Egypt comes in as one of the biggest bargains going.

Even private rooms in hostels and budget guesthouses here can be picked up for as little as £6 / $7 USD and long-distance trains between major cities such as Luxor and Cairo are only £11 / $13 USD in first class!

While I have to admit I didn’t find Egyptian cuisine the best, it is certainly cheap and the national favourite of Koshari (essentially a mix of rice, lentils, macaroni and tomato sauce) can be wolfed down for as little as £2 / $3 USD.

Then, of course, there’s the sightseeing, because who can come to a country like Egypt and miss out on some of the major historical treasures they have here?!

Seriously when you get to somewhere like the pyramids, where entrance costs just £5 / $6 USD, it’s to hard believe you can really access this site for so little!

Another reason Egypt is one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa is the fact you don’t need to take tours or guides to see the sights, sometimes, as in the case of Abu Simbel, they are even included in the ticket price.

But if you do want to take a day tour of the tombs and temples, for example, it’s good to know these can be picked up for as little as £13 / £15 USD.

I even scored an amazingly cheap Nile cruise when I was in Egypt – found out how here – and also got to dive the red sea for as little as £20 / $23 USD per dive.

No question therefore, that Egypt is definitely one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa.

Egypt Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £25 / $30 USD

Sudan, Karima, Pyramids at Sunset

And now we start on our journey south, as we move from Egypt overland into Sudan!

Yes this is exactly what I did back in 2018 (albeit in the other direction i.e. from Sudan to Egypt ) before president Bashir was overthrown, but from what I hear from other travellers, Sudan is just as safe and cheap as ever for travellers.

Seriously rivalling Egypt for the title of the cheapest country to travel in Africa, if not the world, things in Sudan are insanely cheap – a sad reflection of the desperate economic situation that has engulfed the country.

When I was in Sudan, I actually found a guesthouse where the price for a bed was £0.75 / $1 USD and with a limited menu (especially for vegetarians) the national dish of ful – basically beans with bread and peanut oil – also costs less than $1 everywhere you go.

Buses in Sudan are amazingly comfortable and still crazy cheap, setting you back just a few dollars for rides that take several hours. There are also trains in the country, but as they cost much the same and are slower and dirtier, why bother?!

Many people, myself included come to see the amazing Nubian pyramids in Sudan, which are free to enter – lying semi-abandoned in the desert – and there’s no need to take a tour.

In fact, I didn’t take any tours while in Sudan, saw everything independently and only spent money on food, coffee, water, guesthouses, buses and the odd camel ride.

There’s literally nothing else to spend your money on in this country, including alcohol, which is illegal under Sudan’s strict Sharia law.

Does it get any cheaper than Sudan? I think not!

Sudan Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller:£10-20 / $13-25 USD

Kenya, Masai Mara, Cheetah Trio

And now we really begin moving south into one of my favourite African countries, the mighty Kenya.

With so much diversity contained within its borders, Kenya is a feast for those looking to sample this continent for the first time, with hiking mountains, discovering amazing national parks, spotting insane wildlife and strolling along beautiful beaches all easy to experience.

Due to recent political disruption, Kenya tourism has slumped… and so too have the prices.

This is now one of the cheapest countries to safari in and with choices as fabulous as Amboseli National Park, Nakuru National Park and the world-famous Masai Mara – found out why it’s my favourite safari destination here – there’s no question Kenya is one of the best too.

3 day / 2 night safari trips to some of these big name parks can be found for around £350 / $410 USD and this includes food, safari drives, guides, entrance and accommodation – usually of the budget camping variety!

If you’re not camping in Kenya, because you’re basing yourself in cities or towns, then dorm beds in this country cost around £8 / $10 USD a night, which is a bargain, especially at the coast, given you’ll be nestled among some posh resorts at some beautiful beachy spots like Diani.

Read More: Full Review of Diani Beach Backpackers

Local food on the street or from small shops in Kenya will set you back around £10-15 / $15-20 per day if you’re doing it cheaply, and local buses / boats are even less.

Don’t forget budget flights can also be snapped up in Kenya – as an example, you can get flights between Nairobi and Mombasa for around £35 / $45 USD – and tuk-tuks or motorbike taxis (called boda-boda) will take you everywhere within small cities or towns for just a few Kenyan shillings.

Yes, Kenya is definitely one of the cheapest countries in Africa and a great option if you are looking to combine safari with the sea!

Kenya Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £45 / $55 USD – activity dependent

Uganda, Bwindi, Gorilla Eating

And just next door to Kenya, is the equally amazing safari destination of Uganda, which is also one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa if you want to enjoy the amazing wildlife and landscapes.

With similar pricing to Kenya in terms of accommodation, food and transport, it’s once again the case that your budget will massively be determined by how many other activities, tours and adventures you undertake in this country – how long they last and of what travel style they are!

The cheapest way to bag safaris to the most famous national parks in Uganda, such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison River, is to head to the capital Kampala and arrange them from there… although you need to be flexible on dates for this.

Again, a 3 day / 2 night safari excursion will likely set you back around £300-350 / $430-500 USD.

Otherwise, self-drive safaris in Uganda are possible and another way to keep the budget low.

The other place to organise activities and tours from in this country is Jinja – the adventure sports capital of East Africa.

This town is set on the River Nile (in fact it marks the start of half of it) and offers a host of activities including rafting, horseback riding and quad-biking that can definitely hike up the price of travel in Uganda, costing from £35 / $40 USD an hour up to £110 / $140 USD for a full day.

Check out my article about Jinja, Uganda for more information, otherwise, if you want to makes this one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa, make sure you do your research and choose your activities carefully!

If fact, you might want to hold back on all activities in lieu of the big daddy in Uganda, which is gorilla trekking.

Yes Uganda is the cheapest place (within the limits of safety) to see these amazing creatures and while it is still a huge ticket item, you can’t do it for less anywhere else in the world.

Check out my full guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda, including everything you need to know, pack and expect, here or learn more about some top-rated tours that include gorilla trekking in Uganda here .

Uganda Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £55 / $70 USD – activity-dependent (and more with gorillas!)

Malawi, Lake Malawi, Local Life

And now we begin to move further south to the country known as the Warm Heart of Africa!

Yes Malawi is a long, thin-shaped country found on the cusp between Southern and East Africa.

Dominated by Lake Malawi – an African Great Lake – this is one of the best countries in the continent for chilling and one of the cheapest countries in Africa too.

Sadly Malawi’s economy is not doing the best and you’ll immediately see what I mean when you get there.

As the country’s accolade attests however, this has nothing to do with the people’s level of happiness and the friendly greeting you’ll receive.

Local food and buses can be bought for next to nothing in Malawi and accommodation costs here are some of the cheapest in this part of Africa – even at the lake where there are a number of backpacker hostels.

The lake also gives you the chance to scuba dive (around £35 / $45 USD a dive), as well as enjoy boat rides or fishing trips. There’s also some nice hiking to do in the mountains around the Lake, but outside of this, the main thing to do is chill!

With few national parks, Malawi isn’t really a safari destination here, which means just relaxing and getting into the local swing of things is the best activity around.

With this in mind, Malawi is certainly one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa as you won’t be forking out for a huge number of activities.

Malawi Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD

#8 Mozambique

Mozambique, Bazaruto Archipelago, View

And sticking with the watery theme, we now come to the coastal dream that is Mozambique – absolutely one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa.

This really is your chance to sample a slice of paradise for next to nothing.

Tragically still suffering from the blight of the civil war that devastated this country for so many years, Mozambique’s economy is not in good shape and tourism is still a fledgeling industry.

But for those who do make it here, they will find amazing ocean views, great swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and even the chance to spot some whale sharks, all for next to nothing.

The main spots to head are on the southern coast, including the backpacker mecca of Tofo.

Here a dorm bed will set you back around £8 / $10 and a meals in local cafés are between £3-7 / $4-9 USD.

Local buses to get to Tofo from the capital Maputo will only cost you around $3 USD and water-based activities start from around £35 / $45 USD.

As such, you can quickly see, Mozambique is certainly one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa.

Mozambique Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD – activity-dependent

#9 South Africa

South Africa, Cape Town, Clifton Beach

And now we come to the last entry on this list and probably the most famous country to travel in on the continent, and that is the mighty South Africa!

More economically developed than many of the other countries in this part of the world, I’m nevertheless including South Africa as one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa because of its popularity, ease and brilliance as a backpacking / independent budget travel destination.

Yes tourism infrastructure in this country is well-established and, as such, there’s a huge competition over hostels, buses, activities and other tourism services that keep prices low.

Cape Town is probably the priciest city – stunning as it is – but even here a dorm bed is likely to only set you back £12 / $15 USD.

You really can explore this city by yourself, without a  guide – check out my Cape Town itinerary for more ideas – and use services like Uber to get around cheaply too.

Greyhound buses and budget airlines can shuffle you around this vast country for very little and if you stick to buying food in supermarkets and cooking yourself, you can get by on a food budget of around £15 / $20 USD per day.

When it comes to tours and activities (especially safari ones, which are wildly popular here) the ability to rent a car and self-drive in many of these destinations keeps them much cheaper.

Check out my post about how to enjoy a Kruger safari on a budget for more ideas.

When to Visit?

As a huge continent, it’s impossible to give an overall best time to visit Africa, so I’ve split this question down in sub-regions.

When it comes to North Africa, I highly recommend visiting during the spring and autumn months, ie. April to May and September to October, so that the weather is pleasant enough for sightseeing.

In West Africa, the high season runs from December through February, when the region generally experiences its lowest rainfall and humidity – definitely a good idea to visit at this time!

In East Africa, visiting during the long dry season is a great idea. In general, this runs between the months of July and September and also conveniently aligns with the Great Migration too. the short rainy season in November and December can be another good time to visit this part of the continent.

And finally, we come to Southern Africa.

If you’re heading to Cape Town, I’d visit between November and February, but for Namibia and Botswana, the best months are May through October when it’s cooler and less humid.

You don’t need to be rich to travel.

If you are looking for the cheapest countries to visit, this blog will help you plan your trip, as it includes the most affordable countries in the world.

Hi, we’re Rach & Marty!

We’ve visited every country in the world and want to help you get the most out of your travels!

Sudan pyramids

I have visited every country in the world on a small budget of US $50 per day, and there are many countries where you need a lot less to travel around.

I know this as I have done it myself.

My journey to every country was amazing. I have taken the public bus to see the Meroe Pyramids in Sudan , backpacked South East Asia to find the best cheap meals in Chiang Mai, and crossed many borders to see more of the world, the Dominican Republic to Haiti was just one of the many travel days on the journey.

So to help your plan your next adventure, I have focused on the 21 most affordable countries in the world. Depending on what country you live in, you could choose the region that makes the most sense due to the cost of flights, which is usually the most expensive part of the journey.

But sometimes it’s worth paying more for a flight to Central America or South East Asia as you will save in the long term, by spending less daily than travelling near your home just because there is a $50 flight.

And don’t forget, that travelling overland to neighbouring countries is usually the best and cheapest way to see more for less. So when you visit Thailand (don’t miss our 26 best Thai travel tips ), consider travelling across the border to Laos or Cambodia.

Below is a list of destinations around the world to travel around on a budget. I have focused on the cheapest countries in Europe, Asia, the Americas as well as Africa to make this list diverse.

Cheapest countries to visit now in Asia

I’ve listed the daily budget which includes accommodation, transport, meals, and some form of fun & sightseeing.

In some countries, your accommodation can be a private room in a small guesthouse/hotel. And if you are not a solo traveller and travelling with someone, you can sleep in a private room in all of these countries.

If you are travelling solo, I suggest  Hostelworld  to book the best deals in hostels all over the world. It’s a great way to sleep for less and hostels are a fantastic place to meet other travellers so a must-do for solo travellers.

I recommend Booking.com for the best prices on a range of accommodations across the globe.

When it comes to food, places like South East Asia allow you to eat well and out all the time. And, with other parts of the world, you might stick with bakeries and cheap eats. Here and there, you might be able to cook up something in your hostel/guesthouse or simple apartment.

These  7 Tips for how to find the best food when travelling  have you covered for eating well (and under budget) on your travels.

Of course, taking public transport when travelling around these cheapest countries is the key to staying on budget.

I suggest Omio  and Trainline  for booking transport in the USA, Canada, and Europe. And  12Go  is your best resource for booking transport in South East Asia.

Which are the cheapest countries to visit now? Let’s get started!

backpack cheapest countries to visit

Table of Contents

1) The Philippines $35/day

I’ll start with some amazing countries in Asia to travel with a limited budget.  The Philippines is the perfect destination, cheap, warm and friendly. The locals are easygoing and they love their karaoke bars, you will most likely be invited to join.

The best place to travel to in the Philippines is Palawan island to island-hop the stunning El Nido emerald archipelago. I absolutely loved it here and spent two weeks in El Nido. The town is a big hub for travellers and you can hire a scooter to explore other parts too.

affordable countries Boracay - Cheapest countries to visit now The Philippines

You can also fly to Cebu, Boracay and Bohol, all of them have many activities like waterfalls, sardine runs and chocolate hills, plus a large range of budget accommodations.

Manila is busy and chaotic with terrible traffic, so it’s better to skip it and fly to the islands.

The food is not as delicious as in Thailand or Vietnam, it consists mostly of rice and meats but is usually $3-$5. You can take ferries from the islands but domestic flights are very cheap as well.

I use Skyscanner to book my flights online.

One of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines, Boracay

2) Thailand $25/day

The holy grail of every backpacker, Thailand would be my number one choice for any first-time traveller.

What’s not to like? Delicious and omnipresent food can be found everywhere on the streets often for $1.50-$2.50. Find a great range of cheap and clean accommodation anywhere in Thailand ( Agoda has unbeatable prices on accommodation) and easy transport options too.

Oh and the best part, there is so much to see: incredible beaches along Phuket ( Kata Beach is a fave of mine ), Koh Samui and Krabi. Then, see the temples and palaces in Bangkok, Phuket Town or Chiang Mai (read this complete accommodation guide for Chiang Mai ). There is a thriving backpacking scene across the country and everyone speaks English.

I have probably spent less than $20 if not $15 per day when travelling in Thailand over the years. I returned at the end of 2022 and I could still see that this is one of the cheapest countries to visit. It’s not only affordable, but it’s also very enjoyable to travel here. I found the eSIM for Thailand incredibly convenient to stay connected, especially because it offers unlimited data.

And once you are here, make it count and travel to other affordable countries in South East Asia.

3) Kyrgyzstan $30/day

The Stans, as the Central Asian countries, are commonly known, are an amazing part of the world. This is where you shake off the backpacking crowds and get the feel of lesser-visited countries. I have travelled here extensively over a few months and found Kyrgyzstan the cheapest.

Also, the cheapest flights to Central Asia from Europe are to Bishkek.

Markets in Central Asia

The country’s capital is a nice introduction to the Central Asian way of life, hit the markets, chill in the cafes and check out the monuments of Bishkek but make sure you head out of the capital for some awesome hiking. The mountains in Kyrgyzstan are just stunning and the locals are so friendly.

Issyk Kul is a lake east of Bishkek and we loved it here. Our friends at  Nomadasaurus wrote this helpful guide on what to do at Issyk Kul.

Song Kul, further south is another stunning alpine lake and a must – there are great homestays here as well as the southern city of Osh which can also be the starting point of your Pamir Highway Adventure, should you choose to do so.

But be aware it’s about 12 hours on a bus so you may want to break up the journey or fly as the domestic flight was very cheap.  Overall we found the food so cheap in Kyrgyzstan and the buses in Bishkek cost like 6 cents. I recommend staying at Apple Hostel in Bishkek.

But the best parts were most likely the homestays, hot home-cooked meals, and epic days of hiking.

4) Nepal $25/day

Another one of my favourites that I love to return to whenever I have the chance. In fact, Nepal is the county where I paid the least for a private room, our hotel room in Kathmandu for 2 people cost just $4 per night and it was comfortable and clean!

There are some great hostels like Monkey Bunkey with private rooms for $6 per night  or Family Peace House has private rooms for $6.50 per night, and the location is ideal, just 5 mins walk from Thamel.

Kathmandu is the centre for all travellers, you’ll find hardcore hikers here, younger backpackers, and some curious tourists too.

You will fall in love with momos, typical Nepalese dumplings, and Nepalese tea. The climate is cool, but if you don’t bring warm clothes, you can buy them here for a very good price.

Check out this Ultimate Packing List for Travellers for an idea of what to pack for your trip!

Public transport and buses are also affordable. It costs only a few dollars for a long-distance bus to get to Pokhara and it feels like a different and much more peaceful world. Set around Phewa Lake it’s a perfect base for activities.

Hire a bicycle, go trekking or even paragliding, there are so many things to see and do at Phewa Lake .

Chitwan National Park in Nepal

5) Vietnam $25/day

Another one of the South East Asia classics. So cheap to travel around, sleep and eat. You will find plenty of budget travellers here and you can get a decent private room for $15 and a dorm bed in a pretty flashy hostel will set you back around $7.

There are buses and trains and even sleeper overnight buses if you are on a super low budget. Reserve your transport on 12Go for the best deals.

One of the best things about Vietnam is the food. You will get hooked on pho – a type of Vietnamese soup, typically made from beef stock and spices and noodles. Read more about the  10 Most Popular Dishes in Vietnam.

You can explore cities such as Hanoi (don’t miss reading our Complete Hanoi Food Guide ) or Ho Chi Minh, linger at beaches at Nha Trang or Da Nang and you can join a food tour or sign up for a cooking class in Hoi An – another charming place not to miss.

6) Georgia $35/day

If you are struggling to place Georgia on the map, it’s located in the Caucasus wedged between Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Oh, and it’s a real gem. The capital city of Tbilisi will keep you happy for a few days with its charming old town and fortress looming above. Many cute cafes and restaurants are serving cheap Georgian food which is simply delicious. Try khinkali (dumplings) or khachapuri ( cheese-filled bread ), both will cost around $2-$3.

Don’t miss these  9 Best Cafes in Tbilisi  when you stop by. You’ll need this Ultimate Food Guide to eating in Georgia  too.

You can explore the country easily with reliable public buses that will take you into the mountains. Buses are usually $5-$10 and in the Kazbegi or Svaneti region, your best option is to stay at a guesthouse. They often included hearty dinners as well.

And while you are here, you might want to check out neighbouring Armenia which I also consider one of the cheapest countries to travel to.

7) North Macedonia $35/day

When people tell you that travelling to Europe cannot be done on the cheap, don’t listen to them. Sure it’s harder to do so in Norway or Switzerland, but the cheapest countries in Europe won’t break the bank. We wrote a whole article on the most affordable countries in Europe .

One of my favourite countries is North Macedonia, in the heart of the Balkans. Never heard of it? Well, you should put it on your bucket list. While the capital city Skopje is an interesting mix of the old town, loads of statues and cute cafes, it does offer some nice apartments for rent and a few hostels.

Expect to pay $12-$15 for a dorm bed or get a private room for $25. But the best part of North Macedonia is Lake Ohrid , where you can easily get stuck for a few days.

I love their bakeries (burek every day) and fresh produce from the markets. In fact, I recommend you try these 8 delicious foods in North Macedonia  during your visit.

Buses are cheap to get around the country and getting into Skopje can be super cheap too since WizzAir now connects a few major European cities for as little as $20. Book the best flight deals here .

8) Bulgaria $35/day

Let’s stay in the Balkans region now, as travel here is cheap. If you are getting the Balkans and Baltics confused, read our quick explanation here .

Bulgaria is a secret place that many digital nomads flocked to in the last few years. Why? Well, the internet is fast and living here is cheap. The same goes for travelling around. Explore Sofia’s main attractions, and head out to the stunning Rila Monastery and the beach towns along the Black Sea.

You can definitely see this country for less than $35 per day if you stick to public transport, cheap eats and take in all the freebies Bulgaria has to offer.

Rila Monastery Bulgaria one of the cheapest European countries to visit now

9) Moldova $30/day

I have recently heard from another traveller that they wouldn’t go to Moldova because they have heard it isn’t nice. I was stunned! Moldova was such an enjoyable country to explore. No need to fight the crowds of tourists that you see in other parts of Europe and Moldova is one the cheapest countries to visit in Europe.

If you didn’t know, the country is known for its wine and you can visit Cricova Winery and do a tour of the estate . So much fun.

The capital Chisinau has some nice parks and cute cafes. And there are a few monasteries worth travelling to. Dorm beds are around $10-$15 and a small apartment or simple private room starts from $30.

And if you are keen on an adventure, you can take a day trip to Transnistria – a country that officially doesn’t exist.

10) Greece $40/day

Ok, I hear you… what, Greece? How can Greece be one of the cheapest countries to visit? Well, you are right. Visiting Mykonos or Santorini islands at the peak of the summer season doesn’t come cheap.

But have you considered exploring mainland Greece? Take the capital city of Athens, for example. There are cheaper flights to available to get you to Athens. Then, public transport, cheap eats & bakeries are all relatively cheap compared to the rest of Europe.

In the off-season, you can get a decent hotel in Athens for under $50 per room so if it’s two of you, it will be equal to the cost of a dorm bed.

Apartments on Airbnb and Booking.com are plentiful and staying further out of the city centre isn’t a problem as the Athens metro is cheap and reliable.

You can explore the Acropolis (reserve a single entry online)  or   book a guided tour of the Acropolis.

I wrote this perfect itinerary about How to See The Best of Athens in One Day.

My other recommendation is the city of Thessaloniki. It’s the foodie capital of Greece with a young vibe, a few hostels and plenty of affordable apartments (usually under $40). You can also access some of the best beaches in Greece by travelling to the region of Halkidiki. The key is to book early or come here outside the main summer season to grab a good deal on accommodation .

As for food, wow where do I even start? You can eat well and cheaply in local tavernas and the delicious Greek gyros will be your go-to ($3.30) just as all the fantastic bakery goods. One thing is for certain, you will never go hungry in Greece.

11) Turkey $30/day

Turkey has always been a more affordable destination but in recent years the Turkish Lira struggled which makes Turkey even more attractive for budget travellers.

Your biggest challenge will be to choose where to go. Naturally, Istanbul is the biggest drawcard located between Europe and Asia it is packed with things to do .

Istanbul makes for the perfect starting point. Explore the city, drink tea with locals and for a unique experience, visit Turkish Baths. And try the famous “balik ekmek” – a fish sandwich for $1, I loved it.

Our Turkish Food Guide lists the most popular Turkish foods to try around the country. And, we recommend you buy an eSIM for Turkey to stay connected.

A sit-down dinner is usually $4-$5 max and you can find some really tasty and cheap student eateries. I recommend staying in Taksim and Besiktas .

From Istanbul you can travel by bus to other parts of Turkey, bus travel is cheap, however, you might also be lucky with some cheap domestic flights .

I’d recommend visiting Bodrum, Antalya, and the famous Cappadocia although the balloon flight is not so budget friendly at $200 per person.

12) Ethiopia $25/day

Every time someone asks me about my favourite country in Africa, I think of Ethiopia. Not only is it an awesome country to explore, but it is also one of the cheapest countries in Africa to visit.

And to be perfectly honest, some parts of Africa are pretty expensive to travel to due to the high cost of visas and accommodation and crazy expensive flights to get in (Gabon, Central Africa, or Equatorial Guinea).

Our post about  travelling overland through West Africa  will give you an idea of what to expect from travelling in this region of the world.

So let’s get back to Ethiopia, and what is there to see in Ethiopia? The capital of Addis Ababa is a bustling city and I loved the National Museum and learn more about the past. The food is so delicious and you can eat well and cheaply.

Our Ethiopian Food Guide has you covered for everything you need to eat!

And the espressos are the best in Tomoca ! I think it was less than 40 cents for a great espresso.

Travel to other parts of the country can take some time, but visiting the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela or the Simien Mountains National Park is amazing.

If you fly into Ethiopia with Ethiopian airlines you are also able to get cheaper domestic flights which can save you a lot of money and a lot of time. Accommodation is mostly in simple hotels/guesthouses.

Ethiopia has some amazing food

13) Morocco $25/day

Another cheap and affordable country to visit in Africa is Morocco. Flights from Europe can be as little as $20 and you can fly into Fez, Marrakesh or Casablanca and explore from there.

Getting around is easy with cheap buses and trains as well. Trainline is a great website to book tickets from here to there in Morocco. There are hostels, hotels, riads and guesthouses to stay in across Morocco.

You will quickly fall in love with tagines, the quintessential Morrocan dish, but there is more to Morrocan cuisine than just tagine.

Check out our  Morocco Food Guide for 25 must-try dishes to taste when you’re there.

Don’t miss our post about What To Eat in Marrakech (and what to avoid).

Hostel dorms can be as little as $5 although $8 will buy you a bed in a flashy hotel and a private room can be anything from $20-$30 depending on the city.

14) Tunisia $25/day

Another underrated country in Africa is Tunisia. I spent 3 weeks travelling around and absolutely loved it. The fact that this is also one of the cheapest countries to visit is a bonus. Everything is designed for budget travellers: cheap and fast transport, plentiful and affordable accommodation, and fantastic street food – here are 8 of the best ones to try in Tunis .

There are ancient Roman sites such as the incredible El Jem Amphitheatre , Mediterranean towns, beaches at Djerba Island, and plenty of Star Wars sites.

15) South Africa $30/day

My final vote for a budget-friendly country in Africa goes to South Africa. While it might be a long way from other parts of the world, travelling here and the daily cost are pretty low. The number one destination is Cape Town, naturally with its beautiful Table Mountain.

You may travel the Garden route on this 2-day safari tour , select one of these great tours, or as a self-driving tour.

Car hire is very cheap in South Africa. I rented a car for $9 from Johannesburg to drive around Kruger National Park and it was one of the best things ever. Find the best car rental prices with Discover Cars .

You can join a morning safari , or simply follow the vehicles, they are usually a great way to see animals you might not see on your own. Of course, you can arrange a 4-Day Kruger National Park Tour if that’s in your budget too.

On my first trip to South Africa, I stayed at hostels but the last time I went I found some self-contained apartments on Booking.com very cheap and I could cook some food which helped with the budget as well.

16) Bolivia $25/day

The list of cheapest countries to visit in the world must include countries in South America. In fact, there are a few you could travel on $40 below, but my list starts with Bolivia which is one of the cheapest countries in South America. $25 per day will pay for simple accommodation, food and bus rides, and even some fun.

Although Peru seems to be the golden child of South America, Bolivia has a ton to offer. The Uyuni Salt Flat was just a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We hunted down the best day trip to the salt flats from Uyuni once we got there and it was pretty affordable.

I recommend pre-booking this day trip to Uyuni Salt Flat to have a confirmed reservation or a  3-Day Tour to the Uyuni Salt Flat including coloured lagoons .

The city of La Paz is really high up (more than 3,500m above sea level), so the evenings are cool. One of the craziest things I have seen here was Cholita wrestling, don’t miss it.

Then there are the mines in Potosi and the gorgeous Lake Titicaca; so many activities to do from here .

Bolivia Salt Flats

17) Colombia $25/day

I have so much love for Colombia and it remains my favourite country in South America. It is at the very top of the countries I want to revisit. Is Colombia budget-friendly? You bet it is and as a bonus, the country is safe to travel to as well.

Flights to get to Colombia are relatively cheap from North America and if you are flying from Europe, you might find some great deals via Spain. Play around with different flight routes on CheapOair to get a good deal.

Medellin is a great student hub, and Cartagena has some incredible beaches if you love dancing, then spend some time in Cali and learn how to dance the salsa.

And if you want to shake the tourist trail, just pick a small town in Colombia and I bet you will have a fantastic time.

As for food, I adored their empanadas (filled pastries) and their daily menu usually served at lunch. No need to make choices, just ask for the “almuerzo” which will usually consist of soup and main and cost you less than $3.

Cheapest countries to visit Colombia

18) Guatemala $30/day

One of the cheapest countries in Central America to travel around would be Guatemala. Sure there are some boutique hotels and nice restaurants in Antigua, but there is plenty for backpackers and travellers on a shoestring.

Corn, beans, rice, pork, beef, chicken, cheese, and tortillas form the backbone of most Guatemalan cuisine and once again, empanadas are great snacks.

Places to visit include Lake Atitlan for some beauty and the Mayan ruins of Tikal are just wow.

Learning Spanish In Antigua Guatemala with my teachers

19) Mexico $35/day

For anyone who visits Mexico as part of a holiday package might disagree with it being featured on the 21 Cheapest countries in the world, but once you leave the fancy resort, Mexico is a beautiful and affordable destination. It is also one of the cheapest countries to visit from the US as flights here are cheap or you can even cross the border.

The fact that great food is everywhere, plus cheap street food is found on every corner, it’s one of the reasons that any budget traveller will love Mexico.

There are plenty of hostels and cute little pensions and Casas. I have spent 3 months here and tracked my budget every day to see how much it costs to travel here. And after 3 months of pretty extensive travels, I spent on average $32 per day.

The most expensive part of Mexico is Mexico City (mainly the pricey accommodation) and anywhere near the touristy Cancun and Tulum. Your pesos won’t stretch far, so I recommend travelling to other parts of Mexico.

I suggest Merida , Guanajuato , Guadalajara , San Miguel de Allende , and Oaxaca (remember to visit Tlacolula Markets here for an authentic Mexican experience).

Read about the  top 5 food cities to visit in Mexico  and if you’re a self-confessed food lover; then don’t miss a visit to Oaxaca. I recommend you search for these Best Foods to Try in Oaxaca.

20) Ecuador $30/day

Ecuador is often overshadowed by nearby Peru and its attractions, however, there is plenty to see and do in Ecuador .

The capital city, Quito is a charming place and the small town of Banos is the adventure centre and a dream for any backpacker. I loved the special baths here and you can hire a bike and ride along the famous Ruta de las Cascadas, the road of the waterfalls.

Sure you might leave the Galapagos Islands for another time when money isn’t so tight, but you won’t be disappointed.

The dorm bed will set you back $10 and a small private room in a simple guesthouse for around $25-$30. Food and transport are both budget-friendly and you can travel to Colombia or Peru easily by bus.

Banos in Ecuador

21) Sri Lanka $30/day

The final country on the list of the cheapest countries to visit is beautiful Sri Lanka. While you can certainly travel around India on the cheap, I prefer the small island of Sri Lanka.

This island nation packs some amazing beaches, tea plantations, temples and monasteries and some really yummy food. You will get hooked on egg hoppers; thin, bowl-shaped pancakes for breakfast with a strong cup of tea. And for dinner, the spicy Sri Lankan curry.

Check out this post on where to find the best food in Sri Lanka.

I travelled around Sri Lanka by bus, train (although make sure you have a seat), and tuk-tuk! So much fun.

How not to overspend in the cheapest countries to visit now

Of course, there are a few things that will help you stay on budget when visiting these cheap countries. These are my best tips:

  • Use public transport whenever you can.
  • Eat where the locals eat. Cheap eats, lunch deals and street food is where it’s at. And don’t be afraid to cook.
  • Stay in hostels and simple guesthouses or try Couchsurfing .
  • Keep track of your daily spending so you know you won’t overspend in the long run.

8 Cheap African Countries to Visit

by Stephanie · Published February 14, 2021 · Updated February 16, 2024

One of the reasons why Africa is becoming more and more interesting to foreign tourists is its affordability. Considering that tourism contributes considerably to the GDP of African countries and that more solid infrastructure is being built rapidly, it’s not too hard to understand why the demand for many African destinations is at an all-time high mark.

Travelers are in many cases motivated by shared language, so visitors from France are highly interested in French-speaking African countries, for example.

Even budget-conscious travelers can have a premium experience in Africa while saving on hotels, food, souvenirs, and many other expenses.

That’s more than enough to offset the cost of air transportation and motivate thrill-seekers of all generations to try a different vacation.

All things considered, it’s a savvy idea to schedule a short stay in one of the cheap African countries to visit this magnificent part of the world.

What to know before traveling to Africa

For people who don’t have any experience with traveling to Africa, the Big Continent can be intimidating at first.

Scorching hot temperatures and high humidity, presence of “dangerous” animals close to human habitation, peculiar cultural norms – all those things can scare off potential visitors.

That’s why it’s essential to do some research about the particular country you are interested in and find a location that won’t be too demanding or too expensive for a casual traveler.

That’s the smartest way to identify cheap African countries to visit that could be realistic options for your holiday.

Egypt is conveniently located on two seas – the Mediterranean and the Red Sea – and it is full of amazing ancient cultural monuments located along the Nile Valley.

The country is attracting a huge number of international visitors every year, not the least because the hotels and tour trips are so affordable!

Local expenses are also quite low, as you can dine for less than $5 and spend as little as $15-20 per day if you already have a hotel deal that includes meals.

Since Egypt belongs to the list of safe African countries, there is no reason to worry about security.

TIP: Consider wearing hemp clothing to help you stay comfortable in the heat while being covered.

Where to stay

Hilton Alexandria Corniche – This hotel is located just steps from the Mediterranean Sea, and it provides guests with a lot of comforts.

It has free Wi-Fi and a nice on-site restaurant, while the guests can take advantage of an outdoor pool and fitness center to stay in shape during their stay. In short, this is a perfect place to enjoy a luxurious vacation in Egypt on a small budget.

Marrakech Morocco

This gorgeous country is located in the Maghreb region of North Africa and has a coastline that touches on the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco has a rich heritage stretching back to Roman times, but today it is known as one of the more developed African nations. Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes are the most important cities, although there are many other sites to visit.

Most importantly, you can explore them on a budget as restaurants and other establishments have very friendly prices.

TIP: Try planning a few days in Gibraltar before catching a cheap flight to Morocco.

The Oberoi, Marrakech – As a part of a luxurious chain of hotels, the Oberoi is a great choice for any visitor to Morocco that wants to vacation in style and still save money.

This is a five-star establishment surrounded by olive groves and citrus orchards, located in one of the greatest cheap African countries to visit. It offers a choice of luxurious rooms and villas, most of which have their own outdoor pools or gardens.

South Africa

South Africa

It is often said that South Africa is a land of many contrasts, and this fact is reflected in its tourist offer. While this is one of the wealthiest countries in Africa, large parts of the population are struggling economically which keeps most prices low.

The cities of South Africa are very modern and can offer a lot of luxury to foreign guests, while the coastline is long and very diverse.

As an added bonus, the climate in this part of Africa is milder than in most other countries on the continent.

Dio Del’Amore – This charming guesthouse is an excellent base for exploring the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Situated in Jeffrey’s Bay, it is very close to marvelous beaches and is a great starting point for a range of sightseeing and wildlife tours.

Built in traditional Italian style, this beautiful property is furnished with all modern amenities you might need, from free internet and air conditioning to a swimming pool and a golf course.

Ghana - Cheap African Countries to Visit

This West African nation is one of the cheap African countries to visit that isn’t yet a mainstream tourist destination. You can vacation here for less than $50 per day for accommodation, food, and all other expenses combined.

Therefore it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a truly different vacation.

Very culturally diverse and rich in terms of environmental wealth, Ghana consists of several geographic zones that are all worth seeing in person.

With a tropical climate and a long coastline, this lovely country has a lot to offer including the Kakum National Park and the historic Cape Coast Castle museum.

Twitter Paradise – This beachfront property is worthy of its name – it is located on the peaceful patch of the coast surrounded by forest, so you can actually hear the birds every morning.

Sitting between the cities of Cape Coast and Elmina, it’s a great destination for travelers who want to make the most of their time spent in one of the best African countries to visit. On-site restaurant and bar serve local food and drinks.

Mozambique

If you rank African countries by GDP, Mozambique doesn’t rank very high. Affordable tourism is one of the healthy sectors of the economy, buoyed by prices that go as low as $40-60 for food and a place to stay.

Despite having a low GDP for African countries, this nation has a lot of natural beauty and can offer tourists a combination of amazing wildlife and picturesque beaches.

That’s why Mozambique is increasingly recognized as one of the most charming cheap African countries to visit by tourists from around the world.

Bilene Lodge – Visitors to one of the poorest African countries can expect solid accommodation at a negligible price at this seaside resort.

Bilene Lodge offers air-conditioned rooms with fully equipped kitchens, perfect for whole families. Its location near the sea makes it suitable for numerous outdoor activities such as kayaking in the lagoon or bird watching, so you will never get bored here.

Tanzania

Widely known as one of the safest African countries, Tanzania is a leading tourist destination with lots of untapped potentials.

The prices of accommodation and daily expenses are quite modest, yet the country can offer modern amenities that will satisfy even the most demanding visitors.

However, the main attractions such as Mt. Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro conservation area are located away from the urban areas, so Tanzania provides a fantastic backdrop for a tropical adventure in nature!

Kibo Home Bed & Breakfast – This 3-star hotel in Moshi offers fantastic bed and breakfast deals that let you explore Tanzania with minimal spending. It is conveniently located within a one-hour drive from the international airport, with Kilimanjaro National Park close by.

The rooms come with standard amenities as well as incredible views of nature, while extracurricular activities involve hiking, golfing, or shopping at the local market.

TIP : For more wildlife adventures consider a trip down the Zambezi River .

Ethiopia - Cheap African Countries to Visit

Ethiopia is one of the largest sub-Saharan African countries with a population of over 100 million.

Its location near the Horn of Africa and the fact that the country is so rich with historical heritage explain why it’s one of the best cheap African countries to visit. A lunch for two people in a nice restaurant doesn’t cost more than $10 for example.

Dotted with monuments, archaeological sites, and nature reserves, it represents a unique African destination that deserves to be seen in person. Of course, the most famous site is the Cradle of Mankind , the location where some of the oldest hominid fossils were found.

Ethiopian Skylight Hotel – Situated just minutes from the airport in Addis Ababa, this hotel has all the necessary facilities to welcome holidaymakers as well as business guests.

With a range of luxury suites, spacious conference halls, and an indoor gym, it is perfectly equipped to provide the modern traveler with complete peace of mind. The area is very secure, so you can venture out into the town on your own.

Stone Town Zanzibar

While Zanzibar is officially a semi-autonomous region in Tanzania, its illustrious history and magnificent natural resources deserve special mention.

Since it’s located in one of the safe African countries to visit, foreign tourists are flocking to the sandy beaches of this gorgeous archipelago.

You can swim and snorkel in the coral-rich, azure waters of the Indian Ocean, or visit the historical Stone Town in the capital city on the island of Unguja.  You can do all this on a tight daily budget, as $10 is enough to eat, have a coffee, and pay for local transportation.

Plus, if you’re looking for budget-friendly things to do in Zanibar, there are a number of walking tours of Stone Town . One of which is free!

Pwani Silver Sand Beach Hotel – If you are looking for a room with an ocean view, this hotel is the right place for you. Its location in Pwani Mchangani on the Northeast Coast provides tourists with quick access to several incredible beaches.

The rooms have mosquito nets and complimentary Wi-Fi, so the level of comfort you can expect here greatly outweighs the price.

South Africa – with its dramatic coastline, wildlife-filled parks, vibrant cultures and cosmopolitan cities – can be within reach for travelers of all budgets.

The country has long had a reputation for being affordable. Accommodations and food are particularly good value, especially in the upper ranges of the market, with prices at luxury hotels and restaurants considerably less than those at their European and North American counterparts.

At the budget end of the spectrum, expect good quality and standards at very reasonable prices. At all levels, your most significant outlays are likely to be for organized safaris and guided tours. But even here, with a bit of planning, it’s possible to find ways to keep costs manageable while still experiencing everything you hope to.

Plan your spending with this guide to daily costs along with top tips to help you save.

Daily costs in South Africa

  • Hostel room: ZAR200–300 (per dorm bed)
  • Basic room for two: from ZAR600
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): from ZAR550
  • Bus ticket Johannesburg–Cape Town (1400km/870 miles): from ZAR650 one-way
  • Flight Johannesburg–Cape Town: from ZAR1200 one-way
  • Coffee: ZAR30
  • Bunny chow (sandwich): ZAR70
  • Dinner for two: from ZAR450, excluding drinks
  • Bottle of South African wine: from ZAR90
  • Daily entry fee for Kruger National Park: ZAR460/230 per adult/child
  • Daily entry fee for Mountain Zebra National Park: ZAR252/126 per adult/child
  • Beer/pint at the bar: ZAR30–60

Average daily cost for three meals a day plus accommodations and activities: from ZAR800 at the budget level up to ZAR3500 or more for top-end travel.

1. Johannesburg is the cheapest gateway airport for regional flights

Johannesburg is an ideal port of entry if you’re planning to include Kruger National Park or the Drakensberg area (both an easy half-day’s drive away) in your travels, or if you'll be combining your South Africa itinerary with visits to Lesotho , eSwatini (formerly Swaziland), Botswana or other neighboring countries. For international flights, Cape Town is catching up with Johannesburg, and fares are now roughly comparable between the two hubs, so choose an entry point based on geographics and where you want to focus your explorations.

A tourist stands by his car taking a photograph of the coastline near Cape Town

2. Renting a car is the most cost-effective way to explore the country

Car hire is the best budget option for traveling around South Africa, especially if you’re traveling as a family or in a small group. International and local rental agencies have branches at major South African hubs, and many offer unlimited kilometers at reasonable rates – essential for keeping costs down while covering the country's large distances.

Solo travelers or those who don’t want to rent a vehicle should check out private shuttle services. One popular company is BazBus , which connects Cape Town with both Johannesburg and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) via the scenic Garden Route , with both direct and hop-on-hop-off options. Bus is another possibility, but suited mainly for point-to-point transfers between major towns.

3. Use ridesharing apps to get around urban areas

Uber is generally regarded as safe and is less expensive than taxis. It’s also a good choice for affordable transport between the airport and your hotel – look out for the signposted ridesharing app pick-up zones.

4. Visit during the shoulder season to get the best deals

Throughout South Africa, prices are highest during the December to January summer holiday period, and accommodations – including those within national parks – are often booked out well in advance. February to May and September to November tend to be good months to visit in most provinces, with fine weather, lower prices and many areas to yourself. Exceptions to this are the Easter holidays, and big-ticket events like Cape Town’s Two Oceans Marathon in April. In spring, treat yourself to a profusion of jacarandas in Pretoria in October, and an abundance of blue skies and sunshine almost everywhere, while paying off-season rates.

A driver sits at the wheel of a vehicle gazing out at a giraffe on a self-drive safari

5. Plan a do-it-yourself park visit instead of an organized safari

South Africa offers some of southern Africa’s best-value wildlife-watching and all major parks are geared towards independent travelers. Self-drive itineraries are easy, and for those days when you do want a wildlife guide, this can be easily arranged at park reception areas. You can also save by camping or staying in park-run accommodations (all parks offer low-season accommodation discounts), and by self-catering.

If you’re traveling as a family, or if you’re planning on spending more than a week inside the major parks, consider purchasing a SANParks Wild Card . To trim costs even more, remember that smaller or lesser-known parks often have lower entry fees than their more famous counterparts.

6. Save by staying at hostels or backpacker accommodations

Take advantage of cheap dorm beds, kitchens for self-catering, bulletin boards with posts from those looking to find a group, and plenty of links to reasonably-priced local excursions. Almost all hostels and hotels have discounts for children under 12 and many hostels and backpacker establishments are also well-suited for families, with private rooms in addition to dorm beds. Private rentals, such as those arranged through Lekkeslaap , Airbnb or similar engines, can also bring significant savings, especially for longer stays.

7. Visit South Africa’s free and almost-free attractions

Small towns and off-beat destinations will be lower-priced than cities and tourism hot spots, but, it’s possible to save even in major hubs. In Cape Town, for example, Table Mountain can be visited less expensively if you hike up and down rather than taking the cable car. You can then relax afterwards with a swim at the Camp’s Bay tidal pool, or do some seal-spotting from the Seapoint promenade. In Durban , soak up local vibes on a stroll along the boardwalk. And, in Johannesburg, explore the city's many free museums, finishing with a visit to the famous Apartheid Museum , with its reasonable ZAR150 entry fee.

8.  Braai (barbecue), buy local produce and bring a refillable bottle

The braai (barbecue) is a great South African tradition – one that spans cultures and provincial borders and all walks of life. It’s rare to find a guesthouse, apartment or homestay that doesn’t have a braai pit in the backyard.

You could also picnic South African-style by stocking up on provisions in the nearest town, filling a cool box (available for a few dollars at Checkers and other supermarket chains) and heading out for a self-catered holiday along the coast or at the national parks. As you go, don’t forget to seek out South Africa’s abundance of locally made products, especially cheeses and wine, which are often available at great prices.

Local tap water is generally safe to drink, and carrying a refillable flask will help you save while avoiding contributing to the plastic bottle problem. If you don’t want to cook for yourself, watch where locals go to eat to get the best deals. Sidewalk food vendors are good, when you can find them, as are small, local-style restaurants selling traditional food. Ask staff at your accommodation for tips about their favorite places to eat.

9. Claim back tax when you leave

Save your receipts for souvenirs and other items to claim back South Africa’s 15% Value Added Tax when leaving the country. Check out the details at the government's Vat Refund Agency page .

10. South Africa is a good place to splurge, if you can

While upmarket hotels can cost upwards of ZAR3000 per night, rates are generally well-below those at equivalent establishments elsewhere in the world. You'll experience similar levels of service, often complemented by unbeatable views over the ocean or mountains. Once you’ve taken in the views, make time to enjoy South Africa's world-class cuisine. The Cape Winelands and Johannesburg are just two locations known for their excellent dining options. Throughout the country, mains generally don’t exceed ZAR200, while a multi-course set menu at an elite-level restaurant might run to about ZAR1500.

16 of the Best Rand-Friendly Holiday Destinations in Europe

Cheap and Europe in the same sentence? For South Africans?

It may sound like a far-fetched pipe dream, but it’s true!

Travelling to Europe is an irresistible challenge for my frugal loving heart. It’s full of jaw-dropping scenery, captivating history and once-in-a-lifetime festivals. But if you want to experience any of this, you need to be rolling in dollar, dollar bills.

Well, that’s at least what I thought before I ever stepped foot onto the continent.

Flash forward five years and 42 countries later, and I’ve budget travelled the shit out of Europe.

I stay far, far away from money-sucking countries like Switzerland. Instead, I prefer to explore Europe’s lesser-known gems with a sprinkle of its top sights like Rome and Amsterdam on a budget.

The best part? I didn’t have to take out a second mortgage on my house ( figuratively speaking, of course. I’m a millennial I don’t own any property lolz ) or abuse my credit card to survive.

Here are 16 of the best rand-friendly holiday destinations in Europe!

*Prices checked with Budget Your Trip and are estimates.

Feeling parched? Grab a draught of local beer for less than R 25.00 or warm up with a cappuccino for R 22.00

Explore Hungary’s FREE museums, hop onboard one of the oldest ever underground railway systems or unwind at Budapest’s famous thermal baths.

But don’t limit yourself to the country’s capital city. Venture out to the quaint hillside villages, such as Drebecen. You’ll find cheaper accommodation, food, and activities outside of the main tourist hub and a few hidden gems.

But what makes Hungary a fantastic rand-friendly holiday destination in Europe  is that you don’t need to stay in hostels to make it through your holiday. There are tons of mid-range hotels that offer excellent value for money.

Oh, and there is a wine county.

I know what you’re thinking.

“The land of pizza, gelato, and ancient Romans is NOT cheap!”

But what if I told you that if you travelled off-season, you could explore Rome on a budget and see some of the top sights for free?

Of course, this is a strict backpacker budget . You’re going to have to stay in hostels, cook your own meals most nights, and stick to an itinerary that doesn’t have any entrance fees.

But it’s possible!

All you need to do is avoid the hell that is Europe in summer (June to August). Trust me, I’ve done it. It’s hella expensive, and you won’t find a free spot in front of the Trevi Fountain.

If you want to see more of the country, here’s a 10-day itinerary for Italy that will take you to Venice and Florence!

  • Daily budget: R1,400.00 – R3,500.00
  • Average food budget per day: R400.00 – R950.00

  • Mid-range hotels per night: R3,500.00
  • Total cost for one week for two people: R20,000 – R49,000.00

*These prices are reflective of travelling in Italy’s off-season and not spending a ton of money on activities and food.

Until I discovered that South Africans get a one-year visa on arrival that won’t cost you a cent.

That was more than enough of a reason for me to head there. What started as a 3-week adventure turned into almost 2-months when my bag was stolen by another backpacker with my passport inside.

I have bad luck like that.

But in hindsight, it meant I got to explore more of this off-the-beaten-track European destination.

Wander through the ancient streets of Tbilisi and watch the sunset from on top of the Narikala Fortress . Pack your hiking gear and visit the mountain town of Kazbegi . Discover the city of love, Sighnaghi , and if the mood strikes, get married at the 24-hour Sighnaghi Wedding House.

Would one need to exchange into euros to visit multiple countries or what would you recommend with regards to exchanging currencies

November 19, 2021 at 9:49 am

you need to change your Rands into the currency the country uses. some European countries use the Euro and others don’t. if you unlock your credit card for international travel, you can just withdraw money from the atm in the countries you’re visiting.

Thanks for this very insightful article. I see you keep it fairly updated too. Recently spent 3 weeks in the Netherlands with my husband, visiting friends and just getting a well deserved break from the usual routines and life. But it was incredibly expensive and we skipped many meals. I would love to see more of Europe but next time we’re keeping towards much cheaper destinations, and I would consider most of the countries you mentioned above. It’s also given some more ideas. Turkey, Hungary and Romania are top of my list at present. Turkey has been at the top for a few years now so I think we’ll give that a go next year.

I love Turkey! I’m itching to go back there 🙂

Portugal is pretty rad and one of the most affordable European countries!

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Just about everyone thinking about going on an affordable African safari is left in sticker shock—especially after getting quoted a ridiculous price from an online travel agency. For most of us, going on safari in Africa is not possible, and grossly exceeds the notion of a budget vacation.

No worries. Below are some tips and tricks to keep expenses down to make your dream a reality.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Generally, with just about every destination on the planet, there are always ways to do it cheaply. Unfortunately, going “cheap” in Southern and Eastern Africa may lead to your entire trip being left in ruin.

Beyond simply being disappointed and uncomfortable, being frugal can lead to becoming ill and exposing yourself to personal security risks. Simply put, in Africa, you get exactly what you pay for—no more and no less.

Bucket list destination.

Going on an affordable African safari is on so many travelers’ bucket lists, and it’s easy to see why. There is no other experience like it on the planet. Moreover, while expensive, we’ve never heard of anyone regretting their trip.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Typically, travelers come back from Africa with a different perspective of the world and their place in it. Whether it’s witnessing extreme poverty, the kindness of the people, or a leopard killing the most darling steenbok, there is no way to avoid feeling more appreciative of everything you have in life—and that is what travel is all about, cultivating priceless experiences.

When you’re ready to book your flight, follow these three easy steps to get the best price.

Of course, this spiritual journey doesn’t come cheap—but dream destinations tend to be this way. When it comes to cost, going on an affordable African safari is up there with exploring the Poles or cruising the Galapagos Islands . For example, many are surprised to find out that the French-speaking country of the Republic of the Congo has recently been ranked as the most expensive travel destination on the planet.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Why is visiting the Republic of the Congo so expensive? It’s because it’s one of the few places in the world to go gorilla trekking .

We use this budget-savvy travel health insurance to protect our trips – get a quick quote .

For example, the daily permit to seek out the gorillas is about USD 500 per person. Of course, the Congo rainforest offers extremely limited accommodation options, along with costly transportation and food expenses. Taxes and fees paid to the government and regional entities also add significant overhead.

Reducing the Cost of a Safari in 2024

We’ve written extensively on the best safari we’ve ever taken in South Africa and how it’s not worth cutting corners financially when planning the expedition. Nevertheless, there are several ways to decrease the overall cost of the trip to make it a more affordable African safari.

Booking Yourself vs. Using Go2Africa

For our vacations to Africa, we’ve used Go2Africa to assist in the planning and arrangements. After tons of research, we concluded that even if we booked everything on our own it would cost more than having someone else do it. Also, beyond the cost, it was extremely beneficial to have someone on the ground to assist while visiting Africa.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Here are three good reasons why we book with outfitters like Go2Africa:

  • Customization : Instead of getting stuck with a one-click fixed itinerary, Go2Africa can customize the trip to fit your budget and interests.
  • Expertise : Go2Africa will make the vacation as private and exclusive as you desire.
  • Affordability : Most of the time, it’s cheaper to go through outfitters like Go2Africa than to book everything individually yourself. For example, it’s pretty much impossible to book transfers, small aircraft, lodging, and game drives yourself without paying through the roof, let alone making a logistical error. For instance, if you make reservations yourself, and one aspect of the trip gets delayed it may put your entire vacation in jeopardy, whereas Go2Africa can make immediate corrections to keep your vacation on schedule.

Two Terrible Options for an Affordable African Safari

Not spending enough money on a proper safari lodge is the greatest mistake visitors to Africa will make. Previously, we’ve written about the obstacles other bloggers faced when trying to go cheap in Africa.

Don’t Do This ⇓

Typically, to save money, safari-goers will choose one of these two inexpensive options, none of which we would recommend:

  • African overland tour : Travel through Africa on a modified truck/bus with a group over many weeks. Passengers assist with cooking, cleaning, and setting up tents each evening. Unfortunately, this is one of the cheapest and most uncomfortable ways to go on an affordable African safari.
  • Self-driving game drive : Essentially, visitors rent a vehicle and drive through the national parks and do game drives themselves.

Why are these two options so bad?

While cheap, the African overland tour takes place on a big slow loud bumpy truck/bus. Its size, speed, and comfort level greatly limit the experience for the safari-goer. For example, many people complain that they’re motion sick for days or even weeks on end because of the bumpy roads.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

The self-driving game drive option, on the other hand, has many more negatives than positives. While visitors may have more freedom to explore as they deem fit, there are also many considerable disadvantages, including:

  • Missing out on an expert guide to spot animals
  • Staying on the designated roads with no ability to explore the bush
  • Keeping the vehicle and passengers safe (e.g., flat tire)
  • Never experiencing the safari experience

Also, in certain situations, it may cost more to self-drive than to hire a guide or stay at a safari lodge. For instance, self-driving visitors will still have to pay transit fees, park fees, accommodation fees, car rental fees, and fuel fees.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Probably, the best way to envision a self-driving game drive in Africa is to compare it to driving through Yellowstone National Park . However, a significant difference is that in Africa, passengers are not allowed to exit their vehicles, except at specifically identified camps.

Don’t confuse terminology. The term safari is not synonymous with the notion of a game drive. A safari is considered one’s overall journey with the entire experience summed up in one word. On the other hand, a game drive describes the time one spends tracking, spotting, and viewing wildlife, typically in an open safari vehicle such as a modified Land Rover or Land Cruiser. – Harry

When you compare both an overland tour and a self-driving tour to the five affordable African safari options below, you’ll see how lame the more affordable options are.

National Park vs. Private Game Reserve vs. Conservancy

Generally, a safari in Africa will be held in one of three parks, each with its own set of safari rules. They include:

  • National parks
  • Private game reserves

Conservancies

It’s important to know the difference between the three types of parks because it determines how the best affordable African safari options are chosen. The most significant differences are described below.

National Parks

cheapest country to visit from south africa

National parks and national game reserves like Serengeti, Kruger , and Masai Mara are famous for their abundant wildlife. They’re also renowned for their strict rules, generally forbidding:

  • Guided walks
  • Getting out of vehicles (except in designated areas)
  • Night game drives
  • Off-roading
  • Limits on the number of vehicles at animal sightings

If any of the above restrictions impair your vision of a great safari then you’ll want to stay on a private game reserve or conservancy. For example, for us, off-roading and night game drives are the highlights of a great safari—nocturnal animals like lions and hyenas are most active at night.

Private Game Reserves

Unlike national parks, private game reserves have the fewest rules because the property is owned privately. In other words, it’s not open to the public including self-driving tourists or tour buses. Also, private game reserves are typically adjoined to a nearby national park and wildlife is free to roam between the two properties.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

With landowners being the official adjudicators, guides are given more freedom to track wildlife. For example, most lodges will feature guided walks, night game drives, and off-roading.

Finally, private game reserves will have significantly less traffic than national parks. As a result, guests can enjoy animals in a less crowded and more natural environment.

Concessions

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Similar to private game reserves, concessions are areas of land either in a national park or nearby that have been leased for private use. As a result, they benefit from operating under less strict rules than the national park.

Like private game reserves, conservancies are private. However, the main difference is that conservancies typically have local tribes that live on the property. Moreover, conservancy fees help to improve locals’ lives by reinvesting funds in the community.

Five Affordable African Safari Options

The five affordable African safari options below offer great value, and are by no means “cheap.” However, they offer everything one would want out of an African safari but at a much lower price (when compared to the typical luxurious African lodge).

cheapest country to visit from south africa

The resorts listed below all provide guests with a five-star experience at a three-star rate. At first glance, prices may seem high but they include accommodation, full board with great food and drinks, up to three safaris per day, and excursions like guided walks with armed field guides.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that a vacation to Africa will usually include other sights and attractions such as Cape Town and Victoria Falls . Therefore, when considering the price of a safari lodge, many times two or three nights is sufficient.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

In fact, many people we’ve met at various lodges quite frequently stayed only one night. However, we encourage travelers to stay at least two nights to increase the odds of catching a rare sighting. Below are five affordable African safaris in 2024:

1. Arathusa Safari Lodge – Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve

Properties of the same caliber as Arathusa Safari Lodge will typically cost two or even three times as much. Located in Sabi Sand , one of Africa’s premier private game reserves, Arathusa is one of the best affordable safari lodges for anyone looking for a Big 5 experience—90% of guests see all five animals in one day.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

During our visit, we enjoyed afternoon tea from our suite overlooking the nearby watering hole, guided walks, and morning and afternoon game drives that led into the evening. In total, we spent about eight hours per day out on the massive reserve searching for wildlife.

5 Affordable African Safari Options Arathusa

We were 100% absolutely wowed by our experience here and wrote extensively about how it was the best safari in South Africa and the best value for the money.

Arathusa Safari Lodge – From $465 per person sharing

2. Ewanjan Tented Camp – Serengeti National Park

With views over an endless plain in Tanzania’s Seronera Valley, guests of the Ewanjan Tented Camp rave about the abundance of wildlife spotted right from camp. During our stay, a large herd of elephants walked down a path about 100 feet from our ensuite tent.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

In Serengeti National Park, visitors are not allowed to leave their vehicles or the roads. Nevertheless, one way to get around this limitation is with a hot air balloon ride.

During our hot air balloon ride we spotted an epic sight, a lion eating a crocodile! There’s no feeling like watching the sunset come up over the Serengeti while silently gliding over the wildlife, trees, and rivers. If there’s any place in the world to go on a hot air balloon ride, it’s here. Make sure you book online early to secure your spot or with your agent at Go2Africa.

Additionally, between April and June and November and January, the area around Ewanjan is visited by the wildebeest migration. For this reason, if seeing the Great Migration is on your bucket list then Ewanjan is the ideal affordable African safari accommodation to book.

Ewanjan Tented Camp – From $330 per person sharing

3. Mara Intrepids Tented Camp – Masai Mara National Reserve

Kenya’s must-see Masai Mara National Reserve is home to the Mara Intrepids Tented Camp , one of the most affordable African safari options on our list. Whereas Ewanjan in the Serengeti has endless views of the plains, Mara Intrepids is set amidst a heavily wooded area along the Talek River, only minutes from the Ol Kiombo airstrip.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

With an abundance of big cats in the area just about every game drive includes sightings of the King of the Jungle, the lion. Also, Mara Intrepids is in a prime location for the annual wildebeest migration, which takes place between August and October.

Finally, not only is the wildlife viewing amazing but families seek out this lodge for its kid’s clubs which focus on animal education and local Masai culture.

Mara Intrepids Tented Camp – From $175 per person sharing

4. Camp Moremi – Moremi Game Reserve

The Okavango Delta, located in Botswana, is one of the most biodiverse places in Africa and is the main source of water for about a million people. Furthermore, the delta supports the world’s largest surviving elephant population, numbering around 130,000. Of course, there are plenty of hippos, lions, wild dogs, leopards, crocodiles, cheetahs, and countless waterfowl too.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Situated on the stunning Xakanaxa lagoon, and offering water-based safaris, Camp Moremi is an unforgettable and affordable African safari. While it may be a bit expensive and luxurious to be considered low-cost, Camp Moremi does provide tons of value. In fact, what makes it unique is that it provides both 4×4 game drives and water safaris.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Botswana is the second most expensive destination on the planet, only behind the Republic of the Congo. Guests should find comfort in knowing that they’re paying the “going rate,” when just about every safari lodge in the area costs at least USD 1000 per night—and, similar lodges cost well over USD 2000 per night.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

It’s worth noting that the Moremi Game Reserve does not allow night game drives or off-roading.

Camp Moremi – From $597 per person sharing

5. Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Situated in the southwest corner of Uganda on Lake Mutanda, bordering DR Congo and Rwanda, Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge is the mecca for gorilla lovers. Tourists come from all over the world to spend one hour in the company of wild gorillas.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Along with vibrant colors, guests of Chameleon Hill are treated to the most jaw-dropping view of the Virunga volcanoes. Nevertheless, the highlight here is, of course, the gorilla tracking.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Perfectly positioned between Mgahinga Gorilla and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks, Chameleon Hill is the ideal base for tracking wild gorillas. Also, gorilla permits cost about half the cost in neighboring Rwanda. Furthermore, Chameleon Hill has the option of research-based treks which allocate four hours with the gorillas, instead of just one.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

Gorilla permits are far and few. Therefore, if you’re serious about doing this then plan on booking at least three months in advance. Also, along with gorilla trekking, Chameleon Hill offers walking and canoe-based safaris for bird watching and spotting the golden monkey.

These Lodges Provide Great Value

Whether you’re looking to spot the Big Five in South Africa or go gorilla trekking in Uganda, the above lodges are the best affordable African safari options out there. While the nightly prices are by no means “cheap,” they do provide great value especially, when comparing similar lodges that cost two or three times as much.

Preparing an African itinerary is an overwhelming process, and it only gets more complicated each time you visit. The easiest way to start planning is to use Go2Africa’s inquiry tool which helps design the perfect safari that aligns with your budget.

The 12 Cheapest Countries to Visit in South America

By Author Arakita Rimbayana

Posted on Last updated: 24th January 2024

South America is popular among all types of wanderers, including budget travelers. Not only does it offer various affordable (and even free) activities, the cost of accommodation, dining, and transportation here is generally low.

For that reason, South America promises a thrilling travel experience without breaking the bank.

We’ve ranked the cheapest countries to visit in South America based on the average amount you can expect to spend in each. These costings include accommodation, public transport, and meals.

Keep in mind that the cost of food can vary greatly depending on the type of restaurant, location, and dining habits. The same applies to accommodation; that’s why we provide both hostel and mid-range hotel rates.

Click to navigate this article:

So here’s our list of the cheapest countries to visit in South America.

Note:  Some countries in South America are going through political unrest, which influences their economy, and means prices can go up (or down) significantly. As a result, this list may change from time to time as we try our best to stay up-to-date with the current situations.

Exchange rates are also accurate as of late 2023, so double-check these against  the latest rates  for the most accurate conversions and bear in mind that cash is king in many countries in South America, so while a credit card can be handy in major cities, you’ll want to either use an ATM (and check it doesn’t charge you extra for withdrawing money) or a currency exchange offering a decent rate when you arrive.

1. Paraguay ( from $15 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $8 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $6 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: N/A
  • Cost per day: $15

The cheapest country in South America is Paraguay, a non-traditional tourist destination, which makes this country an attraction of its own.

With 110,000 PYG ($15USD) a day, you stay at a hostel (58,000 PYG or $8 USD per night) and a three-course meal (around 44,000 PYG or $6 USD per meal).

Whether it’s to see the colonial architecture of the well-preserved Jesuit missions , explore the vast, unspoiled wilderness of Chaco, or taste the tantalizing flavors of its one-of-a-kind cuisine, you get to experience all that with fewer crowds.

It’s relatively safe to explore cities in Paraguay on your own, but the lack of other tourists can make it a very strange experience! However, we recommend joining a tour or hiring a local guide if you plan on navigating off the beaten path, particularly if you don’t speak much Spanish.

2. Ecuador (from $21 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $5 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $14 USD 9 hrs
  • Budget restaurant: $2 USD
  • Cost per day: $7 + $14 = $21 USD

The second cheapest country to visit in South America is, Ecuador, which packs a punch with its diverse attractions: from the unparalleled wildlife of the Galápagos Islands to the fascinating and rich culture.

Budget-savvy travelers will love that a daily budget, excluding the cost of a Galápagos tour or cruise, of just $21 USD can go a long way in this friendly country.

When it comes to food, basic meals cost around $2 USD, but if you want more than rice and potatoes, expect to pay around $6.5 USD per dish.

As one of the cheapest places to visit in South America , it’s not difficult to find hostels in Ecuador, especially in popular tourist destinations like Quito and Cuenca. A hostel bed costs from $5 to $20, but private rooms (even at hostels) may cost anywhere from $20 to $50.

Interestingly enough, Ecuador uses the US dollar, so the added bonus of visiting this country is that you don’t need to worry about finding a good exchange rate!

3. Peru (from $23.5 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $7 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $2.5 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $14 USD 18 hrs
  • Cost per day: $9.5 + $14 for buses = $23.5 USD

The third cheapest country to visit in South America is Peru, where an average day traveling here costs around S/89 or $23.5 USD. A meal at a local restaurant can cost anywhere from S/ 20 to 30 (about $5 to $8 USD), while street food and snacks are half the price – relatively cheap for such a thriving culinary scene that pretty much guarantees delicious food, even at street food stalls.

When it comes to accommodation, you can expect low prices of around S/ 27 or $7 USD per night at a hostel (but triple for a mid-range hotel).

Peru’s archaeological sites and breathtaking nature make it one of the most beautiful countries in South America, too. Among them is its focal point, Machu Picchu, the ever-popular Inca Trail , and the magical Sacred Valley , all of which never cease to attract visitors.

View of Machu Picchu, Peru from the east of the site

Before the 2023 protest, Peru was one of the safest countries in South America for independent solo travelers. Unfortunately, the latest incidents have had significant impacts on its tourism; some sites are temporarily closed, and others require local guides.

If you plan on visiting Peru in the near future, please keep yourself up to date through our guide to the safest South American countries to visit and read up on when to visit Machu Picchu to help you navigate the best weather for visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site.

4. Bolivia (from $26.5 USD per day)

  • Budget restaurant: $4.5 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $17 USD 9 hrs
  • Cost per day: $9.5 + $17 for buses = $26.5 USD

Coming in just behind Peru is Bolivia, which ranks as the fourth cheapest country to visit in South America.

To explore Bolivia conveniently, you’ll need around 183 BOB ($26.5 USD) per day. Dining at local restaurants costs anywhere from 30 to 50 BOB ($4.5 to $7.25 USD), while higher-end restaurants in cities like La Paz or Santa Cruz can be more expensive, with prices ranging from around 100 BOB ($14.5 USD).

The gap also applies to accommodation. While hostel rates are around 34.5 BOB ($5 USD) only, mid-range hotels can charge 221 BOB ($32 USD) or more.

Transportation can also be very affordable, with bus rides the most economical means of getting around the country – although, for safety reasons, taking a flight can often be better.

Being the home to the world’s largest salt flats, El Salar de Uyuni , makes Bolivia one of the best South American countries to visit. The country’s indigenous communities and ancient civilizations have left behind a fascinating history and cultural traditions that are still present today.

Bolivia is relatively safe to visit independently, although we recommend traveling with friends, especially if it’s your first time in South America.

Those who insist on going solo should find our article about things to know before visiting Bolivia helpful, whether they’re hitting the Salar de Uyuni, Lake Titicaca , or heading deep into the jungle and Madidi National Park .

5. Colombia (from $34 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $4 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $1.5-$3 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $27 USD 9 hrs
  • Cost per day: $7 + $27 for buses = $34 USD

Surprisingly, Colombia comes in middle of the pack when it comes to the cheapest countries in South America, Here, on average, you can expect to spend around 144,000 COP ($34 USD) per day if you’re staying at hostels (which cost around 17,000 COP or $4 USD per night).

Perhaps due to the cheap cost of travel here, but probably also because it’s a truly incredible destination (it’s among founder Steph’s favorite countries in South America), visitor numbers to  Colombia  have rapidly increased in the last decade, making it one of the most popular destinations to visit in South America.

So captivated by the country’s charm – whether it’s the mega biodiversity, friendly local people, low living cost, or all of the above – some have also been unable to resist making Colombia their permanent home.

Colombia is a great place to visit if you’re on a tight budget thanks to the affordable price of traveling here.

La Ciudad Perdida or The Lost City is tucked into the jungle in the north of Colombia

Meanwhile, one night at a mid-range hotel for a double room costs almost as much as the average daily budget, so you can expect to pay around $50 USD per day if you’re traveling as a couple.

A meal at a local, mid-range restaurant is around 17,000 to 25,000 COP (about $4 to $6 USD). Street food and snacks can cost as little as 7,000 to 14,000 COP ($1.5 to $3 USD).

A big factor that sets Colombia as the most affordable country in South America is how easy it is to explore the country on a budget.

Most of what we consider to be the top places to visit in Colombia don’t require you to join a tour, so you’re free to set your own budget and time and can head out to Colombia’s beautiful beaches, glorious national parks , and major cities such as Medellin and Cartagena at your own leisure.

6. Argentina ($43 USD per day)

  • Budget restaurant: $6.5 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $84 USD 17hrs
  • Cost per day: $11.5 + 84 = $95.5

Argentina is a land of breathtaking beauty and eclectic wonders, where soaring mountains and glittering cities share the stage with wildlife colonies, world-class vineyards, and the monumental Iguazu Falls.

Argentina economy update

The Argentine economy is a huge mess at the moment, with inflation expected to hit 200% this year. Using Argentine pesos can therefore be a nightmare – and mean you lose a lot of money. The blue dollar (an unofficial exchange rate that gives you a better conversion than the official rate) is around, but if you want to avoid carrying lots of cash, you can now pay using your credit card and get an exchange rate similar to the blue dollar rate. You must choose to pay in Argentine pesos (not USD!) to secure this rate.

Both Mastercard and Visa give you what is called the MEP rate, which is almost as good as the blue dollar rate. Mastercard will charge you the official rate but refund you the money a few days later; Visa will charge you the MEP rate from the beginning.

If you do want to have some Argentine pesos for paying in cash (which I highly recommend as you will need them for some restaurants and attractions), it’s best to use Western Union, whereby you send cash to yourself using the Western Union app and then withdraw it in Argentine pesos from one of their branches in Argentina. Bear in mind, those in El Calafate and Ushuaia can run dry of notes, so it can be easiest to do this in Buenos Aires.

Additionally, you can bring USD (unmarked and untorn hundred dollar bills), which you can exchange at “cuevas” (unofficial exchange houses). These will be able to give you the blue dollar rate and any hotel owner will be able to tell you where your nearest one is. Souvenir shops in most parts of the country will be able to give you pesos in exchange for dollar bills – although they might not give you the best rate.

Avoid cash machines. Currently, the maximum withdrawal is the equivalent of $15 USD in Argentine pesos and it will cost you $10 USD in fees.

Its capital city, Buenos Aires, attracts millions of foodies and football fanatics alike, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the most popular country in South America to visit (according to Wikipedia’s world tourism ranking ).

Iguazu falls, one of the new seven wonders of nature. Argentina.

8,200 ARS ($43 USD) should be your daily budget in Argentina. Basic meals cost around 1,200 ARS ($6.5 USD) on average, but if you fancy a dish at one of the local steak houses (asados) in Buenos Aires or beyond, expect to pay at least 1,700 ARS ($9 USD).

The home to 2023 World Cup winners is popular among backpackers and solo travelers. As a result, hostels are affordable (around 950 ARS or $5 USD per night), making them only the second cheapest after Colombia.

However, mid-range hotels can be ten times more expensive, hovering around 9,500 ARS ($50 USD), especially during the high season. Our guide to the best time to visit Argentina can help you avoid these elevated costs

7. Brazil ($48 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $12 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $7 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $81USD 1d 7hrs
  • Cost per day: $19 + $81 = $100

60% of the Amazon Rainforest lies in Brazilian territory, offering plenty of adventure tourism opportunities for those looking to head deep into the jungle.

On the other side of the country, Brazil’s long coastline means unlimited sun, surf, and sand, particularly in the vast seaside city of Rio de Janeiro, home to a thriving music, dance, and food scene – and, lest we forget, riotous carnaval celebrations!

A woman dressed in a green outfit at Rio de Janeiro's carnaval in Brazil, one of the best countries to visit in South America.

A bowl of feijoada at a local restaurant usually costs around 37 BRL ($7 USD), while accommodation rates range from 63 BRL ($12 USD) for a hostel to 230 BRL ($44 USD) for a mid-range hotel. In total, a day in Brazil should cost around 251 BRL ($48 USD).

As long as you stay safe – such as by avoiding city beaches after dark and keeping possessions close – it’s doable to explore Brazil’s touristy areas alone. But if you wish to dig deeper into its villages and rainforest, it’s best to join a tour or be accompanied by a local guide.

8. Chile ($74 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $20 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $20 USD
  • Overnight bus journey: $20 USD 11hrs
  • Cost per day: $40 + $20 = $60USD

We’ve come to the more expensive side of the cheapest countries to visit in Latin America: Chile . Notice that there’s almost a $20 USD jump in daily expenses compared to Brazil at #7.

It’s mainly due to the expensive rate for accommodation, especially in remote areas like Chiloé Island, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) , Patagonia , and the Atacama Desert .

Los Cuernos as seen from the road into Torres del Paine National Park from the south

On average, a bed in a hostel costs around 16,000 CLP ($20 USD), while a mid-range hotel room is a lot more, ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 CLP ($50 to $75 USD). That said, Chile is packed full of brilliant hotels and guesthouses , so it’s worth being open to splurging a little where you can.

The Chilean culinary scene is dominated by restaurants in the big cities, so you need to budget around 16,000 CLP ($20 USD) or more for one meal. In contrast, in small towns like Dalcahue on Chiloé Island, you’ll find local markets offer mouth-watering delicacies at more wallet-friendly prices.

Despite the higher cost, the plethora of activities, sights, and experiences more than makes up for it; from the serene, breathtaking landscapes of Tierra del Fuego to the lively, picturesque coastal city of Valparaíso .

And let’s not forget, it’s the second safest South American country to visit, meaning you’ll face fewer safety concerns than elsewhere and be able to concentrate on the beautiful scenery and incredible natural landscapes, instead.

9. Uruguay ($80 USD per day)

  • Budget hostal: $28 USD
  • Budget restaurant: $10 USD
  • Cost per day: $38

Nestled in Uruguay are several charming colonial towns that offer visitors a window into the country’s rich history and cultural heritage. In addition to these historical gems, Uruguay boasts stunning beaches.

To top it off, Uruguay was declared the safest South American country to visit by the 2022 Global Peace Index , making independent travel a worry-free option.

A speedboat on the water in the bay of Punta del Este in Uruguay, the safest country to visit in South America, according to the Global Peace Index

Living costs in Uruguay are among the most expensive in South America, with hostels setting their nightly rate at around 1,100 UYU ($28 USD), and mid-range hotels costing at least double.

Typical meals like empanadas and chivitos cost around 400 to 500 UYU ($10 to $15 USD) or even less if you choose street food stalls. Overall, expect to spend around 3,130 UYU ($80 USD) a day in Uruguay.

10. Venezuela ($100 USD per day)

  • Budget hotel: $50 USD
  • Cost per day: $60

A must-see when visiting Venezuela is the Angel Falls, one of South America’s most magnificent waterfalls . Apart from that, its capital city Caracas offers visitors museums, art galleries, historic sites, and street food stalls selling local fare. It’s unfortunate that this country has faced numerous struggles over the past few views.

cheapest country to visit from south africa

The economic collapse in Venezuela has resulted in severe hyperinflation and a shortage of basic goods, causing prices to skyrocket. This significantly influences your South America vacation budget if you want to include Venezuela – however, we highly advise against visiting the country right now, due to safety concerns.

Currently, a regular meal at a local restaurant can cost $10 to $13 USD, which is usually what a dish at a mid-range restaurant would cost in most South American countries, while a mid-range hotel room charge from $50 to $80 USD. In total, you’ll need $100 USD per day in Venezuela.

11. Suriname ($110 per day; including tour/guide fees)

  • Budget restaurant: $9 USD
  • Cost per day: $37

From Paramaribo’s Dutch colonial architecture to pristine rainforests, waterfalls, and rivers, Suriname has something for every kind of traveler. But since it’s one of the most challenging places to visit in South America, even an avid traveler should consider joining a tour or hiring a local guide.

An aerial photo of a river in the Suriname Amazon, one of the most expensive countries to visit in South America

Set aside a 3,500 SRD (around $110 USD) daily budget to have a hassle-free experience in Suriname. A basic meal costs around 290 SRD ($9 USD), while for budget-friendly accommodation options, hostels and basic hotel rooms will cost between 900 and 1,130 SRD ($28 to $35 USD) per night.

Alternatively, Wilderness Explorers offer customizable trips to Suriname that include transportation, meals, and activities, and make it significantly easier to have a comprehensive experience of the country – all while visiting Guyana and French Guiana, too. As they’re one of our trusted local partners, you’ll receive a 5% discount if you mention Worldly Adventurer.

12. Guyana ($115 per day; including tour/guide fees)

  • Budget restaurant: $12 USD
  • Cost per day: $24

With its vast areas of pristine rainforest, Guyana offers opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and wildlife watching. For the latter, Rupununi Savannah is a must-visit; it’s the home to a diverse array of wildlife, including anteaters, giant otters, and jaguars, and is an absolutely unmissable destination for nature lovers.

Meals and accommodations in Guyana are affordable (ranging from around 2,500 GYD or $12 USD). But since most areas are not served by public transportation, getting around is challenging and expensive.

Ecotourists have the chance to see a rare giant anteater on the grasslands of Guyana.

Even with Guyana being one of the few English-speaking South American countries, it’s almost impossible to explore Guyana without a tour due to its remoteness. Wilderness Explorers is one of the few tour operators here and founder Steph had a brilliant time visiting Guyana with them a couple of years back.

Their nature experience tour gives a brilliant introduction to the country, with visits to Kaieteur Falls, the world’s tallest single-drop waterfall, and remote lodges where endemic wildlife species roam all part of the itinerary. Again, mention Worldly Adventurer for a 5% discount.

What is the cheapest country in South America to visit?

Colombia is often considered one of the most budget-friendly countries in South America. Its affordable accommodation options, low-cost local transportation, and delicious street food make it possible to enjoy a comfortable and memorable trip to Colombia on a budget.

You can find a basic hostel for around 20,000 COP or $4 USD per night, and a delicious meal at a local restaurant for as little as 20,000 to 30,000 COP (about $4 to $6 USD).

But the fact that the country’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage can be enjoyed without incurring a high cost makes it the most affordable country in South America and an increasingly popular place to explore.

Is it cheap to visit South America?

South America can be both cheap and expensive, depending on several factors. These include which countries you plan to visit, the type of accommodation you prefer, and the activities you plan to participate in.

However, it is possible to go on cheap vacations in South America by choosing budget-friendly accommodation options, eating street food or cooking your own meals, and avoiding expensive tourist traps. You can also save money by traveling during the low season when prices tend to be lower.

How much should I budget for a trip to South America?

On average, a budget-friendly trip to South America can cost between $50 to $100 USD daily, while a mid-range trip can cost between $100 to $200 USD daily. This doesn’t include entrance tickets to famous places in South America, such as Machu Picchu , Torres del Paine National Park , or the Galapagos Islands.

Dollars are necessary for travelling in Patagonia on a budget

It’s important to remember that prices can vary greatly between countries and even between different regions within a country. For example, countries like Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru tend to be more budget-friendly than Argentina and Brazil.

Planning to visit more than one country? Save money by flying into the cheapest country in South America and making it the starting point of your trip.

How much money do I need for two months in South America?

If you’re traveling on a tight budget, you can cut your expenses to as low as $1,500 USD for two months. That is more than enough to stay in the cheapest countries to visit in Latin America.

But, if you prefer mid-range accommodations and activities, you should budget closer to $2,500 to $3,000; more if you plan on visiting remote tourist attractions in South America, such as Patagonia , which can be a lot more expensive (although we do have tips for traveling to Patagonia on a budget ).
