Successful applicants will be notified via email at least (1) month before the date of the conference. Notification is subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with all the terms and conditions set forth herein.
Can I defer my Scholarship to another Conference? Or, if I apply to multiple, can I pick which one to attend if I win?
No, you are unable to defer as our team picks the best candidates per conference. Should you choose to forfeit your scholarship for a conference, you will still be considered for additional conferences you applied to. You may indicate your 1st and 2nd choice conferences when applying.
How does Google cover the conference registration fee?
Registration processes can vary per conference. Selected scholars will receive specific registration instructions after confirming acceptance of scholarship. Registrations purchased by scholars ahead of time can be reimbursed for selected scholars.
Can I bring a guest with me to the conference?
All scholarships are open only to chosen recipients. Google will not be responsible for any registration, travel or other conference-related expenses incurred by guests.
What are the travel dates for the conference?
Google will communicate the travel dates for your specific conference in the acceptance email. You must be available to travel on the dates specified in the email.
What if I need to adjust my travel dates?
Shortening the trip is not allowed per eligibility requirements as scholars must be able to attend the entirety of the conference. Should you choose to extend your stay, all costs incurred (including for accommodations) during the days outside of set travel dates will not be covered by the scholarship and arrangements must be made on your own.
How can I book my airfare?
Confirmed scholars will receive an email with directions on how to book a round-trip travel through Google’s travel agency, AmexGBT. While we do our best to accommodate preferences, Google reserves the right to decline arrangements that fall outside of set parameters. Air Travel other than those made by AmexGBT will not be reimbursed or refunded.
All flights will be a round-trip economy class and will include 1 carry on bag and a personal item.
How can I submit a special accommodation request for airfare and hotel?
It’s important to us to create an accessible, inclusive environment for everyone, so please let our travel agency, AmexGBT know if you need any special accommodations.
What airports can I fly out of and into?
By default, air travel will be booked round trip:
- Departing from a major airport of your choice on a flight selected by Google or its designated travel agent. After the conference, you will be returning to this same airport.
- Arriving into the nearest major airport of the conference location as determined by Google or its designated travel agent.
Can I bring a carry-on and/or checked luggage?
All flights will allow (1) personal item in addition to (1) carry on item. Checked bag fees and ground transportation are not included.
If I am local to the conference, will Google reimburse me for my transportation?
If the scholar is local to the conference location and air travel is not necessary, Google will reimburse for one round trip of ground transportation from one of the following options:
- Uber/Lyft/Taxi/Public Transit: Screenshots of the estimated trip and costs should be provided to [email protected] prior to the conference.
- Personal Car: Google will reimburse for mileage using the current IRS National Mileage Rate. Documentation will need to be provided prior to the conference for the estimated distance from home to the conference hotel.
How do I make a hotel reservation?
Hotel accommodations will be made on your behalf for the stated event dates by AmexGBT, Google’s travel agency. Hotel arrangements other than those made by AmexGBT will not be reimbursed or refunded.

Computer Science Research Conference Scholarships
ACM-W provides support for women undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and related programs to attend computer science research conferences.
This exposure to computing research can inspire a student to continue onto the next level of their academic or industry career.
Scholarship Awards
ACM-W scholarships are divided between scholarships of up to $600 for intra-continental conference travel , and scholarships of up to $1200 for intercontinental conference travel .
Scholarship applications are evaluated in 6 groups each year, in order to distribute awards across a range of conferences. ACM-W encourages the student’s home department to match the scholarship award and recognize the student’s achievement locally within their department.
Which research conferences are eligible for the ACM-W scholarship?
Applicants may apply to attend any computer science research conferences, including those that are not ACM-affiliated.
We do not provide scholarships to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing or the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing.
If the award is for attendance at one of several ACM special interest group conferences*, the SIG may provide complementary conference registration and a mentor during the conference. The number of free registrations available varies from SIG to SIG. The student does not have to present a paper at the conference she attends to be eligible for the scholarship.
* ACM special interest group conferences : SIGACCESS, SIGACT, SIGARCH, SIGCOMM, SIGCHI, SIGCSE, SIGDA, SIGECOM, SIGEVO, SIGGRAPH, SIGHPC, SIGIR, SIGITE, SIGMM, SIGMOBILE, SIGOPS, SIGPLAN, and SIGSOFT
Application Deadlines
What if i receive a scholarship for a conference that gets postponed or cancelled.
If a conference is postponed or cancelled, the scholar will retain their scholarship for the same conference or for another later conference.
In both cases, the scholar must inform the ACM-W scholarship committee. Moreover, in the latter case, the ACM-W committee will decide if the new conference is equally suitable. In any case, the scholarship will not be lost.
Frequently-Asked Questions
Before applying, please visit our Scholarships FAQs page for additional information on our scholarship program.
How to Apply
Please create an ACM web account and complete the scholarship application with the following:
- Your personal information
- Details of the conference you want to attend
- A statement of why you would like to attend the conference

CONFERENCE TRAVEL GRANTS (CTG)
CTGs fund 50% of your expenses (up to $500) to present your research at conferences or exhibitions. CTGs can also be used to present original creative projects at juried competitions for performance based disciplines . Presenting at conferences or performing at juried events can help you communicate your research findings, network with other researchers, and expand your understanding of the scope and nature of academic research. Plus, it is great experience in learning to effectively present your work to others.
You can apply for a CTG to fund any accepted presentation at a recognized regional, national, or international conference or meeting in your field. Check the international projects page for important information on travel restrictions.
After you receive this grant and if you receive financial aid and currently have a Northwestern scholarship, you might be eligible for additional funding to support this conference travel. If you need emergency help to fund this travel, please review the Emergency Aid Request available through the financial aid office. You can use the same document that you upload for this grant as your documentation.
The deadline is rolling throughout the academic year. You cannot apply until you have been accepted by the conference/exhibition, but you must apply (and be accepted by the grant) prior to the actual event taking place. June 1st is the last possible day to apply for 2022-2023; May 1st is the last submission date for students from NU-Q.
Eligibility
Student eligibility.
Eligible Applicants:
- All current Northwestern University undergraduates (including SPS students working towards completion of an undergraduate degree and NUQ students)
- Students are eligible for more than one Conference Travel Grant
- Seniors who were accepted to present prior to the grant closure deadline, even if the event itself occurs after graduation
Ineligible Applicants:
- Undergraduates at other institutions
- Northwestern students in advanced degree programs (including students who are in BS/MS programs who have completed the undergraduate degree requirements)
- Students applying for retroactive funding to cover a conference they previously attended
Group Projects
Special note for nu-qatar students.
Since conference travel is significantly more expensive from Doha, the grant, if awarded, may cover hotel, flight, and conference registration costs. Student travel normally does not include providing a per diem or any additional funds for visa fees, individual meals, ground transport, or other incidentals. If the student is on financial aid, they can request a reasonable stipend to cover food and other minor incidental expenses. NU-Q students residing in the U.S. at the time of the conference will be awarded at the same rate as all other NU-E students; that is, the OUR grant will cover 50% of conference expenses, up to $500.
Developing Your Application Package
Selecting conferences or exhibitions.
Presenting at a professional conference is a significant achievement as an undergraduate. It demonstrates your ability to communicate a complex topic with a broad audience, and it validates the impact of your work within your field of study. Regardless of what career path you choose to pursue post-graduation, attending a conference demonstrates both written and oral communication skills to employers. Additionally, conference attendance can be leveraged to help build your professional network. Many conferences have Exhibition Halls that include booths from companies in the industry, and/or the conference may have a Graduate School Fair. If you are seeking to attend graduate school and work with a particular faculty member, it could also be a good idea to attend their presentation, and/or meet with current graduate students who work with that faculty member.
The best way to find a conference is to first talk to your research sponsor and ask about conferences in your field and which ones they often attend themselves. One particular challenge many undergraduates face is that conference applications are often due many months before the conference takes place, so you need to proactively think about this goal. It can help to share this goal with your research sponsor early so they can help you 1) work towards achieving this goal and 2) help you identify the right conferences and timelines that suit your needs.
Many conferences are sponsored by field-specific professional organizations, but there are undergraduate specific conferences* (see * below), too. The networking opportunities and goals of these two different kinds of conferences vary significantly, but they can both be very meaningful experiences. It could be beneficial to try and attend more than one kind of conference. The Office of Undergraduate Research does not keep an ongoing list because students attend such a wide variety of conferences (and the titles of the conferences often change from year-to-year!). Although this is by no means comprehensive, every year we have students attend conferences sponsored by:
- Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium* (apps due late winter)
- National Conference on Undergraduate Research * (apps due in fall)
- National Collegiate Research Conference * (apps due in fall)
- Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium * (apps due in January)
- Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students * (apps due end of summer)

Applying to a Conference
Applications for many conferences will require an abstract submission, which summarizes the work you plan to present. A good abstract will be a short description of the main elements of your research or creative project. Conference attendees will use your abstract to decide whether they want to take the time to listen to your presentation. The abstract should be short and written in a simple, concise, informative, and inviting style. You want to convey both your credibility and your passion for the project. All conferences have their own abstract guidelines (such as word or character count, intended audience, etc.), so you should always defer to their specific requirements when applying to a conference. Failure to comply could result in not being selected to present. A good abstract will include these key elements.
- Motivation: Why do we care about the problem and the results? Why is it important/significant/interesting? What problem does the work attempt to solve, or what intellectual or theoretical gap does it aim to fill?
- Problem statement: What problem are you trying to solve? What is the scope of your work (a generalized approach, or for a specific situation)? Be careful not to use too much jargon.
- Approach: How did you go about solving or making progress on the problem? What did you do, and how? What is the scope of the project? What models or specific approaches did you use? What sources of evidence did you rely on?
- Results: What’s the answer? What did you find/learn/conclude? An abstract of a scientific project may include specific data. Other abstracts may discuss the findings in a more general way.
- Conclusions: What are the implications of your answer? What does it mean, and how does it relate to what else is known? How does this work add to the existing body of knowledge? What are the implications for the problem/issue identified in part 1?
Here is an abstract template for the Northwestern Undergraduate Research Expo. Again, defer to specific conference requirements as you complete the application process – our template is a general guide.

- Think about who the audience will be. Look to see who commonly attends the conference you selected.
- Proofread your abstract. If you are accepted to present your work, the abstract you submit will be published in a printed program.
- Unless the conference explicitly asks for them, avoid parenthetical citations and footnotes. Short abstracts do not typically include references, a Works Cited list, or footnotes.
Budgeting for Conference Expenses
Please visit Creating a Budget for specific guidelines. For in person conferences, students often underbudget their expenses because they do not think holistically about logistics and expenses beyond conference fees. The template can be useful for drafting up your responses, but you will ultimately insert these as line items into the budget section of the application (which includes a space to describe your rationale for each expense).
Here are some conference-specific budget considerations we encourage you to think through:
- Conference fees
- Poster printing costs (Ask about poster printing in your department, or consider using the Mudd Library Plotter Printer. )
- Transportation (If you are flying, do not forget about transportation to/from the airport, or within the city itself. If you are driving, consider parking fees or gas reimbursement.)
- Housing (if housing is not provided by the conference, the conference website often includes links for hotel block discounts, local dorms, and potentially ways to find a roommate.)
- Food (ask for a reasonable per diem, subtracting out meals that are covered by conference attendance fees)
Applying for the Conference Travel Grant
You won’t write a traditional research grant proposal to apply. you won’t turn in receipts or a report at the end. .
Application Basics
To apply you’ll provide:
- Basic demographic information, such as your major and graduation date
- Information on the conference (title, location, dates)
- An abstract of your presentation/submission (your name must appear on it)
- Proof of acceptance to present at the conference (ie screenshots from emails)
- Information about the conference’s standing in your field of study
- Project expenditures across categories such as: conference fees, airfare, local travel, accommodations/lodging, and food
- The form fields in the application will sum your total expenses for you. However, since this grant can only cover 50% of expenses up to $500, there will be a box for you to describe how you will fund the other 50% of expenses.
You cannot apply for conference travel funding until you receive acceptance from the conference/event.
Funding the Other 50% of Expenses
This grant is only for 50% of your total expenses. You’ll need to find money for the other half. WCAS students can apply for their conference grant . SESP students could apply to the Hess Fund . After you receive this grant and if you receive financial aid and currently have a Northwestern scholarship, you might be eligible for additional funding to support this conference travel. If you need emergency help to fund this travel, please review the Emergency Aid Request that is available through the financial aid office. You can use the same document that you upload for this grant as your documentation. Students from other schools could reach out to their undergraduate dean and/or their major department to see if additional funding is available.
Application Submission & Review Process
Using the application portal.
- To apply, please login to https://soap.northwestern.edu
- Click on “Discover Opportunities & Apply”
- Apply for the Conference Travel Grant!
Faculty Endorsement and Faculty Role
Faculty mentors can give you awesome ideas about where to present your work! Your faculty sponsor is not required to attend the conference with you, but they will provide an endorsement of your application. You may have a faculty sponsor from another academic institution, but you must request a guest sponsorship from the Office of Undergraduate Research prior to application submission; please provide us the name of the faculty mentor, their email address, and the name of their academic institution. Graduate students or post-docs may not serve as faculty sponsors.
- Your faculty sponsor/advisor must submit an online endorsement as soon as possible after you submit. Unendorsed projects will not be considered.
- The faculty endorsement consists of the following prompt: Please offer you opinion on the quality of the conference itself and the specific opportunity it affords your student.
Application Evaluation
Complete applications, including budget and faculty endorsement, are reviewed internally at the Office of Undergraduate Research (as opposed to committee review).
Decision Notification Process
Decisions are made quickly (within about a week). You have an excellent chance of being awarded this grant.
Completion of Grant Requirements
Once you return from your conference, there is a brief but mandatory survey to close out your grant. The survey will ask about your presentation experience, so we can better advise other students and help promote conference travel in the future.
Frequently Asked Questions:

Conference and Travel Stipend
Cooke Undergraduate and Graduate Scholars may apply for funding to cover travel and conference fees to develop academic expertise and career readiness.
Due to an overwhelming number of submitted applications for the Cooke Conference and Travel Stipend this year, we have closed the application for the 2023-2024 academic year. The application will reopen in the fall for travel requests during the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Cooke Conference and Travel Stipend provides Scholars with financial support to develop their academic expertise and their professional networks. Scholars are eligible to receive the stipend once during their scholarship program to cover travel expenses and conference registration fees up to $1,800. Undergraduate Scholars may receive a second stipend during their scholarship program in a different academic year for an opportunity that is distinct from their first travel experience.
A strong application will demonstrate:
- Develop skills and knowledge through immersive learning experiences
- Access primary source materials or experts not available at your academic institution
- Network with other students and professionals in your chosen field of study
- Improve public speaking and presenting skills with industry-related audiences
- Deepen your understanding of a different culture, heritage, and/or environment
- Build language skills through everyday interaction with native speakers
- Relevance to major/career: We are looking for well thought out applications with travel experiences that align with academic and career goals.
- An organized, thoughtful plan: Explain what sessions you plan to attend, people you plan to meet, etc. to make the most of the travel experience.
- A progression in your career development: Show how this experience will advance your career development and build upon prior experience. This is especially important if you are submitting a proposal to receive the stipend for a second time.*
- A specific, well-researched budget: Research what flights, hotels, and registration fees will cost. Include precise numbers (not price ranges).
- Complete and accurate information: Make sure your travel dates and budget are accurate and that you have included any web site links requested. Applications with inconsistent or missing information will not be approved.
*Only Undergraduate Scholars can apply to receive the Conference and Travel Stipend a second time.
Applications should be submitted six weeks prior to the travel start date.
Only Cooke Undergraduate and Graduate Scholars actively enrolled are eligible for this funding.
- Graduate Scholars may receive this stipend once during their scholarship program.
- the second experience shows a progression in their career development. (Example: The first experience was to attend a conference and the second experience was to present at a conference.)
- the second request is in a different academic year than the first request.
The stipend can only support travel to one event from September – May for Scholars who are actively enrolled in school at the time of their application and during the term when they intend to travel.
Scholars must be in good standing with the Foundation to receive this stipend. Any outstanding grade reports, annual reports, or final reports for the Internship Stipend need to be submitted prior to submitting a request for this stipend.
Applicants must complete the Cooke Conference and Travel Stipend application which includes the submission of a proposed budget. Allowable expenses to include in your budget:
- Transportation to/from your destination – Airfare, train, mileage for car travel
- Ground transportation (Ubers, taxis, subways) while you are at your event
- Food (up to $65/day)
- Registration fees to attend one conference
- Additional fees for poster printing or other prepared materials for presentations
Funding cannot be used for:
- personal travel unrelated to the Scholar’s career development
- school trips where a Scholar will earn academic credit
- travel companions
- annual membership dues
- cell phone charges or SIM cards
- moving or relocating
- graduate school visits
- job interviews
- house sitters or pet sitters
- clothing or dry cleaning
- health clubs
- pay television
The stipend can be used for expenses one travel day before and one travel day after the dates of the event. Expenses for any additional travel days will be at the Scholar’s own expense.
Funding for international travel is limited and will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Preference will be given to Scholars who are engaging in substantive research and field work, or who are leading presentations. We will not approve requests to attend international conferences or one-day events, unless the Scholar is presenting.
Stipends will be paid directly to the Scholar within three weeks after the approval of the application and proposed travel budget.
Recipients are required to submit an Outcomes Report within two weeks of completing the travel. The report should summarize the experience and its impact on the Scholar’s academic and professional development.
Recipients are required to submit receipts for all expenses.
Any unused funds must be returned to the Cooke Foundation.
Recipients of the stipend are required to submit an Outcomes Report within two weeks of completing their travel . The report should briefly summarize the experience and its impact on the Scholar’s academic and professional development. It also includes an expense report and a place for recipients to upload all of their itemized receipts, which are a required part of the Outcomes Report.

Student Conference Travel Scholarship
College of Health
The College of Health recognizes the importance of academic and professional development through participation in virtual and/or in-person conferences. To support our students in attending such conferences, the college provides funds to assist students in covering partial costs associated with conference attendance.
The application must be submitted by the deadline and approved before the conference travel. This opportunity is only for a conference occurring next term; approval will not be granted retroactively after a conference.
Application deadlines are across the academic year. Unfortunately, funds are limited and not all applications will receive financial support.
The range in amount for a scholarship is from $250-$1,000, depending on the conference attended, and can only be used on allowable expenses. A student is allowed to receive only one conference travel award per academic year (summer through spring). The award amount will be deposited into the recipient's student account. The award amount will first be applied toward any outstanding balance.
The completeness and quality of applications and the merits of the conference experience will be considered. Preference will be given to students with higher financial need.

The Education Division of the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission (ED TMECCC) Speaks at the Education in Tourism: Theory and Practice Conference at Russian State University for the Humanities
- Back to previous page ( alt + ← Back)
William Lu, Secretary of the Education Division of TMECCC, was invited to be one of the six speakers at an international conference on Education in Tourism: Theory and Practice, held at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH) on March 13, 2019. The conference was chaired by Alexander Logunov, Chair of the Department of History, Politics and Law, and the attendees from related industries and institutions included: Roman Skoriy, President of the National Tourist Union; Thomas Wilken, Director of Operations at the Moscow Marriott Hotel Novy Arbat; Nelly Kuleshova, Learning & Quality Assurance Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Moscow; and Andrey Yatsenko, Co-president of the National Committee on Russian Ecological Security. An estimated 100 people participated.
The conference covered many key subjects, including education for the tourism industry; tourism as an educational project in the 21 st century; innovative methods of training people for the tourism industry, and national policies regarding developing tourism in the Russian Federation for children and young people.
William Lu began his address by saying that tourism is often referred to as “an industry without pollution”. This makes it an industry sector worthy of serious attention when it comes to economic development, and he urged the tourism-related industries, companies, and institutions to provide more internship opportunities for students.
He then mentioned Taiwan’s allowing visa-free access from 6 September, 2018 till 31 July this year, and the new direct flights available to Taipei from Moscow and Vladivostok, and he encouraged more Russian people to visit Taiwan. The number of Taiwanese tourists visiting Russia has grown rapidly in the past 3 years; it has more than tripled, from 3,522 in 2015 to 10,859 in 2017. A number of Taiwanese hotels, travel agencies and restaurants have become regular participants of the Moscow International Travel & Tourism Exhibition (MITT) because they anticipate booming numbers of Russian tourists will visit Taiwan.
William then focused on tourism and education, expressing his hope for more and closer cooperation between Russia and Taiwan combining Mandarin Chinese learning and tourism and hospitality, given that studying Mandarin Chinese has become a popular trend there. Many Chinese language centers affiliated with universities in Taiwan and the tourism industry have created innovative tours that combine experiencing local culture with some language learning, and overseas visitors can enjoy a trip to Taiwan that’s more than just sightseeing. He also mentioned some related on-going cooperative education projects, including a language exchange program which sends 30–40 Russian students to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan each year.
The Russian State University for the Humanities is one of Russia’s key universities focusing on humanitarian research, and it is one of the 39 participants in the national Develop Export Potential of Russian Educational System project. It has more than 30,000 students and 1,900 academic staff. It was established in 1991, as the result of the merger between Moscow Public University (which was founded in 1908 through an initiative of Alfons Shanyavsky) and the Moscow State Institute for History and Archives (founded in 1930). The university’s motto is “Centuries-old Tradition, Contemporary Technology”. It has signed over 240 cooperation agreements with leading foreign universities and research institutions, and more than 700 foreign students study or do an internship at RSUH each year. It looks forward to further cooperation with Taiwan.
