How to save on travel with a Costco credit card
If you’re a regular Costco shopper, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi can make a lot of sense for your wallet. With savings both at the wholesale club and on additional everyday spending categories, it has a lot of savings potential.
Before you plan your next vacation, you should also consider its potential value as a travel credit card . Specifically, as a way to save more money when you book a trip through Costco Travel.
Whether you’re a Costco member already or considering joining the club, here’s what to know about saving on your next Costco Travel booking with a Costco credit card.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi details
Annual fee: $0 (though you must be a Costco member, which costs $60-$120 annually)
Welcome offer: N/A
4% cash back on eligible gas and electric vehicle charging purchases (up to the first $7,000 spent each year, then 1%)
3% cash back at restaurants
3% cash back on eligible travel purchases (including Costco Travel)
2% cash back on all other Costco and Costco.com purchases
1% back on everything else
More details: This card offers few added benefits beyond the cash rewards it offers. You’ll receive your cash-back rewards once per year as a rewards certificate, which you can redeem only at U.S. Costco warehouses in a single transaction.
Costco Travel details
Costco Travel is a service Costco members can use to book hotels, rental cars, cruises, and whole vacation packages at discounted rates. You can even find theme park tickets (including Disneyland and Walt Disney World ) and all-inclusive resort packages.
While you must be a Costco member to use Costco Travel, there’s no option to book your trip in-store at a warehouse. You can either search travel options through the online Costco Travel portal or speak with an expert by phone at 1-866-921-7925.
If you have a Costco Executive membership (the $120/year tier), Costco Travel purchases also count toward your 2% annual rewards. You’ll earn 2% rewards on the bulk of your travel costs, though taxes, fees, surcharges, and some other parts of the transaction may not be included.
When you book through Costco Travel, your package often comes with additional credits or other benefits to add even more value to your vacation. You may also earn Digital Costco Shop Cards with your travel purchase. These are essentially Costco gift cards that you can use on future Costco spending with Costco Travel, on Costco.com, or at Costco warehouses.
When you search for deals through the Costco Travel site, the itinerary overviews will typically indicate whether the trip comes with a Digital Costco Shop Card (along with info about daily resort credits and other savings). These gift cards can offer you hundreds of dollars in value back on your vacation to put toward future everyday spending with Costco.
Travel benefits of the Costco Anywhere Visa
When you use your Costco Anywhere Visa to book a trip through Costco Travel, you’ll get 3% cash back on the purchase. These 3% rewards are in addition to the 2% you’ll earn as an Executive Member and any potential Digital Costco Shop Cards.
Plus, your Costco Anywhere Visa includes a few travel protections that can help keep you covered on your trip. These include travel accident insurance, car rental insurance, travel and emergency assistance, and more. Make sure you read your card’s terms to see what your exact protections are.
Finally, this card has no foreign transaction fees — so you can use your Costco card and earn more rewards when traveling abroad without taking on any extra charges.
How much can you save on travel with the Costco Anywhere Visa?
With multiple ways to earn rewards, it’s possible to score a lot of potential savings on your Costco Travel booking.
Let’s take, for example, a family of four planning a vacation to an all-inclusive family resort in Cancun during the fall. They’ll leave from Dallas and want to book a room at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun from Oct. 6-11.
If they were to book this vacation through Costco Travel today — the all-inclusive resort, flights for four, and transportation to and from the airport — the cost would total $5,748.58. For comparison, we also looked up the price to book the same trip directly through the airline and hotel — today, that cost is about $5,700.
While, on the surface, the two bookings are almost exactly the same price, that doesn’t account for the extra Costco rewards.
Here’s the savings breakdown when we account for the Costco Travel rewards. The below amounts assume all costs are eligible for rewards and that our family has an Executive membership.
3% cash back with the Costco Anywhere card: $172.46
2% back with Executive membership: $114.97
Digital Costco Shop Card included with booking: $321
Total: $608.43
Of course, you can also save when you book directly with the airline and hotel if you’re a member of their loyalty programs. You could also use another travel credit card with rewards for travel bookings.
But there is a ton of value in the multiple ways to earn and save through Costco — if you’re already a regular Costco shopper and will get the full value of your rewards. In this case, you could essentially reduce your cost from $5,748.58 to $5,140.15, with those savings going toward your future Costco spending.
Note: These totals are just examples; the actual amount you’ll owe will change depending on when you’re looking to book and your specific travel details, as well as adding on fees and taxes not included here
More travel cards to consider
If you’re not sure a Costco credit card is the best option for your travel savings, there are plenty of great travel rewards credit cards available today with a range of rewards programs , categories, and added benefits. Here are some of our top picks:
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
Why we like it: For a $95 annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers travel rewards and great redemptions. After you’re approved you can earn 75,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 within the first three months. Ongoing rewards include 3x points on dining, online grocery purchases, and select streaming services, and 1x points on all non-bonus category spending. You’ll also get an annual $50 statement credit each account year for hotel purchases through Chase Travel; travel you purchase through Chase Travel (excluding spending that qualifies for the hotel credit) earns 5x points and all other travel spending earns 2x points.
When you’re ready to redeem your Chase Sapphire Preferred points, you can get a 25% boost when you redeem for travel through Chase. That means that every point is worth 1.25 cents toward travel when booking through the issuer's portal. For example, you can get more than $900 in value with the 75,000-point welcome offer. You’ll also get an annual points bonus on your account anniversary equal to 10% of your total purchases over the year prior.
Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
Why we like it: Solid travel rewards earnings don’t get more straightforward than the Capital One Venture . This card has a $95 annual fee and a welcome offer worth 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 within the first three months. For rewards, you’ll earn 5x miles when you book hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on every other purchase.
To redeem your miles for travel, you’ll have the option to book a trip through Capital One Travel or to put the rewards value toward a travel purchase on your card statement. The Venture Card also offers a credit up to $100 toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry and a $50 experience credit when you book a hotel stay through Capital One Travel’s Lifestyle Collection.
American Express® Gold Card
Why we like it: The American Express Gold Card is another great travel option for earning rewards today to use on future travel. It carries a $250 annual fee ( see rates and fees ) but offers 4x points at restaurants, 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per year, then 1%), 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and 1x points on all other purchases. You can also earn 60,000 bonus points when you spend $6,000 within the first six months.
Despite the high annual fee, there is plenty of opportunity to get the value back through annual credits. When you add your Amex Gold card to your Uber account, you can get up to $120 annually ($10 per month) in Uber Cash — and get up to $120 ($10 per month; with enrollment) in dining statement credits for eligible spending at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and select Shake Shack locations.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi Review: More Details
If you regularly shop for deals at Costco, you could potentially get even more value from your membership – and put some money back into your pocket – by using a co-branded store card to pay for your Costco purchases. Capitalizing on Costco’s reputation for offering cheaper gas than the average fuel provider, the Costco Anywhere Visa card offers one of the best bonuses you can get on year-round gas purchases. It also offers a strong cash-back bonus on restaurant and travel spending and a decent bonus on other Costco purchases.
This card requires some patience, though, since it only lets you claim your earnings once a year.
Earning cash back
If you spend a lot on gas each month, you should get a pretty good return from this co-branded store card. You’ll get 4 percent cash back on every dollar you spend filling up your tank or charging your electric vehicle (up to $7,000 per year, then 1%). It doesn’t matter if you’re braving the lines at Costco’s fuel station or at another qualifying station. The only merchants that are excluded are gas stations at another warehouse club, grocery store, superstore or convenience store. Gas also has to be used to fill up a car to qualify for the bonus.
See related : FAQs on Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi
Citi caps bonus spending for gas purchases at $7,000 a year. But that still gives you just over $580 a month to earn 4 percent per dollar spent – allowing you to collect up to $280 every year.
You’ll also get 3 percent cash back on dining (including fast food and sit down restaurants, bars, lounges and cafes) and select travel purchases, such as airfare, hotel bookings, car rental charges, travel agent expenses, cruise bookings and purchases you make on CostcoTravel.com.
In addition, you’ll get 2 percent cash back on purchases you make at Costco and Costco.com and 1 percent cash back on everything else.
The wide variety of bonus opportunities makes the Costco Anywhere Visa a good card for everyday purchases. We estimate that you’ll earn roughly 1.91 cents for every dollar that you spend. That’s significantly more generous than other popular cash back cards, such as the Blue Cash Everyday ® Card from American Express and the Bank of America ® Customized Cash Rewards credit card – both of which earn, on average, just over 1.60 cents per dollar spent. In fact, one of the only cards without an annual fee that beats the Costco card’s earning rate is the Citi Double Cash® Card, which gives cardholders 2 cents back for every dollar that’s charged — 1 cent when you make a purchase and 1 cent when you pay your bill on time.

No sign-up bonus
The Costco card doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus, though. So if you’re looking for a quick cash infusion, you’d be better off looking at another gas card, such as the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card * or the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card – both of which offer generous bonuses to brand-new cardholders.
Costco membership fee
The Costco Anywhere Visa doesn’t technically charge an annual fee. However, you will have to pay a yearly $60 fee to Costco to remain a member. If you upgrade to executive status, your yearly membership will cost $120.
Redeeming cash back
The biggest downside to the Costco Anywhere Visa is its highly restrictive redemption policy, which makes it a pain to redeem the cash you earned. Rather than allow you to claim your cash whenever you’re ready for it (as most issuers do), Costco makes you wait until the end of February for an annual rewards certificate. The certificate only covers the cash you earned the previous year (between January and December), so you’ll have to wait another year to claim whatever cash you earned in January and February, just before your certificate was issued. You will then have until December 31 of that year to redeem your one-time certificate at your local Costco for cash or merchandise. If you fail to claim your cash before the December 31 deadline (or if your Costco membership expires before you’ve presented your certificate), you’ll lose your rewards altogether.
Costco’s restrictive policy essentially forces you to maintain your membership indefinitely in order to redeem everything you’ve earned. So you may want to think twice about this card if you don’t plan on staying a Costco shopper forever.
No foreign transaction fee
Despite its restrictive redemption policies, the Costco Anywhere Visa is still an unusually generous card for everyday purchases. Unlike many of its cash back competitors, for example, it doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee, allowing you to freely use your card abroad. Foreign transaction fees have become all-but-extinct on travel rewards credit cards. However, many cash back cards still charge a small fee for international purchases.
Other benefits
The Costco Anywhere Visa also offers some pretty good benefits for a cash back card, including:
- Purchase protection. You may be reimbursed if your purchases are stolen or damaged within three to four months after you bought them.
However, Citi has stopped advertising other valuable travel protections, such as travel accident insurance, rental car insurance and trip interruption and cancellation insurance. You may want to use a travel card with more robust protections when you’re purchasing airfare or making other big ticket travel purchases.
Alternatives for Costco purchases
The Costco Anywhere Visa’s 2 percent cash back rate for Costco purchases is pretty good for a (technically) no annual fee card. But if you don’t want to wait to receive your cash each year – or commit to an ongoing membership – there are some good alternatives that offer a similar return. For example:
- The Citi Double Cash card offers up to 2 cents back for every dollar that you spend — 1 cent when you make a purchase and another 1 cent when you pay your bill on time — including at Costco.
- Other flat rate cards, such as the American Express Cash Magnet ® Card*, offer a slightly lower rewards rate of 1.5 percent back on every purchase. But since you can transfer your points to other airline loyalty programs when you own certain Chase premium cards (thus increasing their value), you may actually be able to get a higher rate of return with the Chase Freedom Unlimited® card.
- You may also be able to temporarily get 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 worth of Costco purchases using a card with a rotating bonus category. These types of cards often include warehouse purchases as a quarterly bonus category. However, categories change every year, so you can’t count on the bonus returning.
Approval odds
Unlike many store cards that don’t require excellent credit, you’ll need a pretty good credit score to get approved for the Costco Anywhere Visa. CreditCards.com, for example, estimates that you would need a score of at least 740 to feel confident about your odds.
Customer service
Citi has a fairly good reputation for customer service. J.D. Power, for example, ranked Citi sixth for customer satisfaction in its Credit Card Satisfaction Study. Citi customers who log in to their online accounts can chat directly with customer service or they can call a customer service line for 24/7 support. The Citi mobile app also has pretty good online reviews. However, customers do complain about frequent mandatory updates and occasional glitches.
How does it compare to other cash back cards?
With an earning rate of nearly 2 cents for every dollar you spend, the Costco Anywhere Visa stands out as one of the most lucrative no annual fee cash back cards on the market. But unlike many of its competitors, the Costco Anywhere card doesn’t offer a promotional APR. It also doesn’t offer as much flexibility.
Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card
Like the Costco card, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card offers 2 percent cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs. It also offers 3 percent cash back on the category of your choice, including gas & EV charging stations.
But unlike the Costco card, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card sharply limits how much you can earn. You can only get 2 to 3 percent cash back on a combined $2,500 in purchases per quarter — limiting you to a maximum of $300 worth of bonus earnings per year. The Costco card, by contrast, limits bonus earnings on gas to $280 per year and doesn’t limit bonus earnings on Costco at all.
Chase Freedom Unlimited card
The Chase Freedom Unlimited card lacks the Costco card’s bonus rate on gas purchases, but matches its rate on dining purchases and can beat its rate on travel purchases if you book through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. You’ll also get at least 1.5% cash back on all other purchases, regardless of what you buy.
Discover it® Chrome
The Discover it® Chrome doesn’t offer the flashiest spending bonus: you’ll get just 2 percent cash back on gas station and restaurant spending (on up to $1,000 in purchases per quarter) and 1 percent cash back on everything else. But Discover’s Cashback Match™ makes it a lot more attractive in the first year. Since Discover will match 100 percent of your earnings, you’ll essentially get 4 percent cash back on restaurants and gas stations. Discover limits bonus spending to $1,000 per quarter, though, so the most you could earn through bonuses alone would be $160 in your first year.
Who should get the Costco Visa card?
- You’re a Costco member (or plan to become one) and don’t plan on canceling your membership anytime soon.
- You’re a car owner and are looking for a gas card.
- You don’t mind waiting for your rewards certificate or driving to Costco to redeem it.
How to use the Costco Visa card?
- Use this card for all your gas and EV charging purchases so that you can get up to 4 percent cash back on your first $7,000 in purchases and then 1% thereafter. However, be aware that some gas stations, such as gas stations tied to convenience or grocery stores, are excluded from the bonus.
- Book travel and pay your bar and restaurant tabs with the Costco card in order to get 3 percent cash back. However, use a different travel card for everyday travel purchases, such as tolls and public transportation, since those don’t count toward the bonus.
- Bring this card with you when you shop at Costco in order to get a 2 percent bonus on your purchases.
- Redeem your rewards certificate on your next Costco shopping trip: You can pay for your merchandise with the certificate and receive cash back for any earnings that remain.
Is the Costco Visa card worth it?
If you’re a regular Costco shopper and don’t mind driving to your local Costco to pick up your annual rewards certificate, then the Costco Anywhere Visa is a great card. But if there’s a chance you’ll cancel your membership within the next few years, it may not be worth the risk of losing all or some of your rewards.

How credit card issuers classify travel and dining purchases
Editor's Note
When a rewards credit card offers you a spending bonus for travel or dining expenses , it might not mean what you think it does. Each card issuer applies different criteria to charges that will qualify for these bonuses, and you might not receive the bonus rewards you expected.
In this guide, we'll take a closer look at which travel rewards credit cards offer bonuses for travel and dining purchases and, more importantly, which expenses will qualify for those extra points and miles. Then, we'll offer some tips and tricks to help you maximize your rewards.
American Express
Many popular Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points offer bonuses on different kinds of travel purchases.
Among the most popular is The Platinum Card® from American Express , which offers:
- 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (up to $500,000 per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)

The American Express® Gold Card offers:

- Ride-hailing services

When it comes to restaurants, several American Express cards do offer bonuses, but some of the cards only offer the bonus at eligible restaurants. In these cases, the following are excluded:
- Purchases at a restaurant located within another establishment (e.g., a restaurant inside a hotel, casino or event venue).
- Purchases at bars, nightclubs and convenience stores
- Purchases made through a third-party food delivery service outside the U.S.
In addition, a purchase may not qualify for additional points if the merchant submits the purchase using a mobile or wireless card reader or if you use a mobile or digital wallet.

Tips and Tricks
Watch out for warehouse stores.
Many banks will exclude purchases from warehouse stores from eligibility for bonus rewards. These stores negotiate steep discounts on the fees that card issuers charge, and the banks really don't want to offer additional rewards when they're already making less money from these transactions.
Be careful with travel agents
In some cases, purchases from travel agents are considered travel, while in others, they're not. For example, most card issuers will classify charges from travel agents as travel; however, some cards only award bonus points on travel that's specifically categorized as flights purchased from the airline or the issuer travel portal. Be sure to know your card's stated policy before purchasing from an online travel agency.
Call to appeal
If you have what you considered an eligible expense that didn't earn a bonus or wasn't eligible for rewards redemption, consider contacting the card issuer and asking for an exception. This won't work every time, but the credit card industry is intensely competitive, and banks have good reason to resolve these issues in your favor.
Be careful outside of the United States
American Express excludes foreign transactions from many bonus categories it offers. While other card issuers are less explicit about it, foreign transactions are also more likely to be incorrectly categorized. As a result, if you have major travel or dining expenses during a trip abroad, be sure to double-check that they have been properly credited when you return. And, of course, be sure to swipe a card with no foreign transaction fees to avoid being hit with the one-two punch of lower rewards and added fees for the purchase.
Bottom line
It's good practice to review a credit card's bonus-earning categories and see which purchases are eligible to earn bonus points versus which purchases are not included. Based on your spending habits, some credit cards and their strict definition of travel and dining purchases may not allow you to maximize your point-earning potential. Keeping a diverse mix of credit cards in your wallet is a good idea to overcome any restrictive purchase classifications.

How Credit Card Issuers Define ‘Travel’
Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .
In the credit card industry, the term “travel purchases” includes a broad range of spending. Problem is, the types of spending that count as a travel purchase on one card might not count on another — and that can make it hard to earn rewards with your travel credit card or redeem your points for travel purchases.
A few categories are considered travel by all issuers — hotels and rental car agencies, for example — but the rest often vary. For example, only some issuers include cruise lines and parking lot fees.
NerdWallet spoke with major issuers that offer travel rewards or travel statement credit. Here’s what we found:
All issuers surveyed included purchases from airlines, car rental agencies, hotels, bus lines, cruise lines, passenger railways, taxicabs and limousines, travel agencies and ferries in their definitions for proprietary cards (that is, not including co-branded cards).
Bank of America® cards have the broadest definition of travel among the issuers we surveyed.
Note: Citi's definition of "travel purchases" varies by card. For this reason, the issuer isn't included in the chart below. However, in the full list of terms for each credit card issuer beneath the chart, Citi is included.
On both the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card and the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card , the following categories are considered travel, according to Bank of America®:
Airlines and air carriers.
Lodging, including hotels, motels and resorts.
Car rental agencies (including truck and utility trailer rentals).
Cruise lines.
Taxicabs and limousines.
Travel agencies and tour operators.
Passenger railways.
Travel-related arrangement services.
Toll and bridge fees.
Automobile parking lots and garages.
Suburban and local commuter passenger, including ferries.
Transportation services, not elsewhere classified.

On the Citi Premier® Card , eligible travel purchases include spending in the following categories, according to Citi:
Restaurants (including cafes, bars, lounges and fast food restaurants).
Select entertainment, including live entertainment, live theatrical productions, concerts and live sporting events.
Movie theaters.
Amusement parks (including zoos, aquariums, circuses and carnivals).
Tourist attractions (including museums and art galleries).
Record stores.

According to Chase, eligible travel purchases include spending in the following categories:
Hotels and motels.
Operators of passenger trains.
Toll bridges and highways.
Parking lots and garages.
According to Discover, eligible travel purchases include those made in the following categories:
Commercial airline tickets.
Hotel rooms.
Tour operators.
Vacation packages purchased through airlines.
Online travel sites.
Local and suburban commuter transportation, including ferries.
Charter or tour bus lines.
You can redeem rewards for travel statement credit on these purchases up to 180 days after the transactions are posted to your account.
What’s a ‘tourist attraction,’ anyway?
On their own, these terms aren’t especially helpful. “Commuter transportation” sounds like it could be anything that gets you to work. And “tourist attractions” is about as vague as you can get.
These categories actually correspond to merchant category codes . An MCC is a four-digit number that describes a merchant’s type of business. The payment networks, like Visa and Mastercard, use these standardized codes to set the fees that merchants pay to accept cards. When you make a purchase, the payment network communicates the merchant’s MCC to your issuer, and it generally shows up on your credit card statement with the other transaction information. Many issuers use these codes to reward cardholders for spending in certain categories — say, restaurants or gas stations.
A merchant’s bank decides with the merchant how its business should be classified. Codes depend solely on the merchant, not its location or what you’re buying. If you eat at a restaurant in a hotel, for example, your issuer will probably consider your tab restaurant spending — not hotel spending. And if you buy a souvenir T-shirt at that restaurant, it will count as a restaurant purchase just like your meal.
In the early days of credit cards, payment networks categorized purchases using the federal government’s Standard Industrial Classification codes, says Chuck Fillinger, a senior associate at The Strawhecker Group, a banking consulting firm. As more merchants started accepting credit cards, categories expanded beyond the old government-based system and became more specific. There are now hundreds of MCCs, Fillinger says. As new card-accepting merchants emerge, more categories will likely be added.
“Travel is probably the most confusing, with a variety of MCCs, as there are so many different aspects. You have trains, buses, airlines, hotels and Uber and Lyft,” Fillinger says.
Demystifying MCCs
Some spending categories sound confoundingly similar, but are still considered separate by payment networks — “commuter transportation” and “passenger railways,” for instance. Fillinger says that’s partly because each category has its own risk profile based on average transaction size and the likelihood of fraud or that customers will dispute charges. The credit card processing fees merchants pay vary according to that risk.
Here are a few MCCs that cause confusion today:
Travel agencies and tour operators (MCC 4722). Back in the day, “travel agencies” referred to brick-and-mortar businesses where you bought airline tickets and arranged travel itineraries. Nowadays, travel aggregators and discount travel sites, such as Expedia, also use this MCC.
Taxicabs and limousines (MCC 4121). This category can now include services like Uber and Lyft.
Commuter transportation (MCC 4111). Visa uses this MCC for merchants that provide “local and suburban mass passenger transportation over regular routes and on regular schedules,” such as trains and ferries. Trains meant for long-haul trips are generally categorized as “passenger railways.”
Real estate agents (MCC 6513). Mastercard’s rules define this as “fees charged by merchants engaged in the rental and management of residential and commercial properties, such as real estate agents, brokers, and managers, and apartment rental services.” This includes fees to rent rooms through Vacation Rental By Owner and its parent company, HomeAway. Airbnb, however, generally counts as a hotel or motel.
Tourist attractions (MCC 7991). Many expect this category to cover amusement parks, but it doesn’t. Instead, both Visa and Mastercard clarify that this category includes “expositions, botanical gardens, craft shows, museums, and wineries.” Amusement parks have their own separate category.
Know how to earn rewards
Defining travel spending remains an imprecise art — and that means it’s not always easy to know how a purchase will show up on your statement.
You can search merchant category codes in your area using Visa’s supplier locator tool . Or you could find out how your card issuer has categorized past purchases by logging on to your account online and checking your history. But you might end up with some strange results. A parking lot fee might count as “Misc. government services.” An airport shuttle might be listed as “Transportation service, not classified.”
And keep in mind that other countries use different MCCs that might not count as “travel” for U.S. credit cards.
Sometimes a purchase might not be categorized as you think it should be, and for now, there’s not much you can do about this. Your card issuer — the bank that holds your account, as opposed to the payment network like Visa — has no control over how merchants are categorized. Knowing your issuer’s definition of travel doesn’t guarantee your purchases will be classified that way, but it’s a good starting point if you want to get the most out of your credit card.

The designated household member must provide proof that they live at the same address as the Primary Member. For additional information, see Member Privileges & Conditions .
How do I qualify for the annual 2% Reward?
Executive Members receive an annual 2% Reward (up to $1,000) on qualified Costco purchases. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply . The Executive Membership upgrade fee is an additional $60 a year for Business or Gold Star Members (plus sales tax where applicable). We will prorate the upgrade amount based on the months remaining in your current membership. Purchases made prior to upgrading are not eligible for the 2% Reward. At your next renewal, you will be billed a total of $120 for your Executive Membership. To upgrade, visit the membership counter at any Costco warehouse.
How is my annual 2% Reward calculated?
Costco Executive Members earn an annual 2% Reward on qualified purchases (see calculation of 2% Reward) . Reward is capped at and will not exceed $1,000 for any 12-month period. Only purchases made by the Primary and active Primary Household Cardholder on the account will apply toward the Reward. The Reward is not guaranteed to be equal to or greater than the Executive upgrade fee paid. Limit one Executive Membership per household and business. For more information, see Executive Rewards .

Best credit cards for gas of 2024, best rewards on gas: citi custom cash® card, citi custom cash® card.
After spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening
Why we chose it: The Citi Custom Cash earns 5% cash back on your top eligible spending category on up to $500 of spending each billing cycle (then 1%), which can include gas. This makes the Citi Custom Cash one of the most rewarding cards to use for gasoline purchases, plus you can switch your gas spending to another card if you hit the $500 spend limit in a month or prefer to earn 5% rewards in another category. Read our Citi Custom Cash review .
- 5% cash back rewards on up to $500 of spending in your top eligible category each month (then 1%)
- Solid list of eligible rewards categories, including restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and select streaming services
- Your 5% category can change from month to month based on your spending
- Non-category spending earns only 1% cash back
- Card offers very few additional benefits
- 5% rewards are capped at $500 of spending monthly
Best Cash Back on Gas and Groceries: Blue Cash Preferred® Card From American Express
Why we chose it: We love the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card’s rate of 6% cash back on spending at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in spending, then 1% back). This alone is enough for us to forgive that this cash back card charges an annual fee, which is an introductory $0 for the first year and $95 per year thereafter. But the card’s rewards don’t stop there: The Blue Cash Preferred also offers 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations along with great consumer insurance benefits like extended warranty*, purchase protection* and return protection*. Read our Blue Cash Preferred Card From American Express review .
- Unlimited 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations
- 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1% cash back)
- Extended warranty*, purchase protection* and return protection* included
- U.S. supermarket rewards are capped at $6,000 of spending annually (then 1% cash back)
- $95 annual fee
- Amex limits the number of cards it will issue to you
Best Unlimited Gas Rewards: U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card
U.s. bank altitude® connect visa signature® card.
One-time 50,000 bonus Points will be awarded if you are approved for a new U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card and eligible Net Purchases totaling $2,000 or more are made to your Account within 120 days after Account opening.
Why we chose it: Most cards offering more than 3% cash back on gas will cap your rewards in some way. Not so with the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect card. With this card, you’ll get 4X points on an unlimited amount of gas station and EV charging purchases. Plus, you can earn between 2X and 5X points on other purchases. You can then redeem your earned rewards for cash back, travel, gift cards and more. The card has an introductory annual fee of $0 for the first year, then $95 per year after that.
- Unlimited 4X points on gas stations and EV charging stations
- Complimentary GigSky global mobile data plan
- Four complimentary Priority Pass visits per year
- No consumer insurance benefits, like extended warranty or purchase protection
- Rewards categories beyond gas/EV charging and travel aren’t any more competitive than other 2% rewards cards
- U.S. Bank cards generally require a good or excellent credit score for approval
Best for Costco Members: Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
Costco anywhere visa® card by citi.
Why we chose it: If you’re a Costco member, you probably make many of your gas purchases at Costco already, so it only makes sense to carry a card that offers 4% back on those Costco gas purchases. Plus you’ll get 4% back on all of your other gas purchases up to an annual spending cap of $7,000. Don’t let the spending cap scare you off, either: Even if you’re filling up a Honda Odyssey minivan weekly, you’re unlikely to spend more than $7,000 a year on gas. Read our Costco Anywhere Visa Business Card by Citi review .
- 4% back on gas and EV charging, including at Costco, for the first $7,000 spent per year
- 3% back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases
- No annual fee
- Limited consumer insurance benefits
- Rewards come as an annual credit card rewards certificate, which must be redeemed for cash or merchandise at Costco
- Requires a paid Costco membership
Best for Sam’s Club Members: Sam’s Club® Mastercard®
Sam’s club® mastercard®.
To qualify, you must apply and be approved for a Sam’s Club® credit card account and use your new account to make Sam’s Club purchases totaling $30 or more (excluding cash advances, gift card sales, alcohol, tobacco and pharmacy purchases) within 30 days of date of account opening.
Why we chose it: Sam’s Club members can earn 5% cash back—on top of Sam’s Club’s already competitively-priced gas. Even when you’re on the road and away from your local Sam’s Club, the Sam’s Club Mastercard is one of the most rewarding gas cards you can get.
- 5% in Sam’s Cash rewards on gas purchases on the first $6,000 per year (then 1%)
- 3% in Sam’s Cash rewards for dining, and on Sam’s Club purchases for Plus members
- Cash back rewards are issued monthly, within one to two billing cycles of being earned
- Sam’s Cash can only be redeemed at Sam’s Club or samsclub.com
- Earns only 1% back on non-category purchases
- Requires a paid Sam’s Club membership
Best for Gas and Other Bonus Categories: Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card
Wells fargo autograph℠ card.
After spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
Why we chose it: A card that offers great cash back in several categories at once can reduce the number of cards you carry, making it easier to earn generous rewards no matter what or where you spend. The Wells Fargo Autograph card offers unlimited 3X points on a bunch of useful categories, including gas, restaurants, travel, transit, streaming services and even phone plans. All other spending earns 1X points, as well. Read our Wells Fargo Autograph Card review .
- Unlimited 3X points on dining, gas, travel, transit, streaming and cellphone plans
- Cellphone protection with a $25 deductible
- Introductory APR purchases and balance transfers
- Earns only 1X points back on general purchases
- No extended warranty benefit
- Getting approved for a Wells Fargo card typically requires good to excellent credit
Best Quarterly Categories: Chase Freedom Flex℠
Chase freedom flex℠.
Earn a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Plus, earn 5% cash back on combined gas station and grocery store purchases (excluding Target and Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.
Why we chose it: The Chase Freedom Flex is a rotating category card that offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending on activated categories that rotate quarterly. Normally, gas shows up at least once in the rotating categories during the year, meaning you can get 5% back on gas for three months or more. At the moment, the Chase Freedom Flex is offering one of the best welcome offers for gas and grocery store spending: You can get 5% back on the first $12,000 of spending in combined purchases at gas stations and grocery stores in your first year. Plus, earn a $200 welcome bonus after spending just $500 in purchases in the first three months. Read our Chase Freedom Flex review .
- 5% back on activated, rotating bonus categories (up to $1,500 in quarterly spending, then 1%)
- Many useful quarterly bonus categories including gas and groceries
- Extended warranty and purchase protection benefits
- Categories are determined by Chase and are only published the month before the quarter starts
- Cellphone protection is limited to two $800 claims, up to $1,000 total per year, leaving many higher-end cellphones under-protected
- Grocery store bonus category excludes Target and Walmart
Best Transferable Points Card: Citi Premier® Card
Citi premier® card.
After spending $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening, redeemable for $600 in gift cards or travel rewards at thankyou.com
Why we chose it: It’s not too difficult to find a card earning 3% cash back on gas. But if you prefer earning points that can be transferred to travel partners and used for flights or hotels, you’ll struggle to find cards that can earn more than 2 points per dollar. The Citi Premier Card earns 3X points on gas—a rarity among cards offering transferable points—as well as 3X points at supermarkets, restaurants and select travel. All other purchases earn 1X points, and there’s no limit to how much you can earn. Read our Citi Premier Card review .
- Earns 3X points on gas, hotels, air travel, restaurants and supermarket purchases
- Points can be redeemed for cash back or transferred to travel partners
- Limited time offer of 10X points on hotels and car rentals booked through Citi Travel (valid through 6/30/2024)
- No consumer insurance benefits included, like extended warranty or purchase protection
- Offers many fewer travel insurance protections than competing cards
Best for Gas and Online Shopping: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express
Why we chose it: The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express pairs 3% cash back rewards on U.S. gas station purchases with matching rewards at U.S. supermarkets and on U.S. online retail purchases. Each category is individually capped at $6,000 in spending (after which you’ll earn 1% cash back). While you can find cards that earn more on any given category, you won’t find another card that offers comparable rewards on all three categories. This card also offers 1% cash back on all other purchases with no limit to how much you can earn, all with no annual fee. Read our Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express review .
- 3% back on groceries at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retail purchases and U.S. gas stations (up to $6,000 in yearly spending per category, then 1% back)
- $84 Disney Bundle credit, awarded as $7 monthly credits when you charge a $9.99+ subscription to the Disney Bundle
- 3% categories are capped at $6,000 in annual purchases (then 1% back)
- Earns only 1% cash back on other eligible purchases
- Card does not offer Amex extended warranty benefits

A Closer Look at the Best Gas Credit Cards
Best rewards on gas: citi custom cash card.
Why we love this card: Earning 5% rewards in a category we can choose is an incredible deal. And since the Citi Custom Cash card offers 5% on up to $500 in spending in the eligible category where we spend the most each month, we can effectively choose our bonus category by altering how we use the card. The Custom Cash card’s 5% eligible options include a long list of categories that we can easily maximize such as gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, select travel, home improvement stores and more. This makes it a great way to increase the rewards earned. Combine those rewards with an introductory 0% APR offer and $200 cash back bonus after spending $1,500 in the first six months, and this card is easily a top contender.
Who should have this in their wallet: People who want to maximize their credit card earnings should carry the Citi Custom Cash Card to increase the rewards they earn in one of the card’s eligible categories. Choose one of the Citi Custom Cash’s eligible categories and use the card for those purchases to earn 5% rewards, then change your preferred category later on if desired.
Other cards to consider: The U.S. Bank Cash+ card lets you pick two 5% categories, but its categories are lackluster. You can always combine your efforts, too, using the Citi Custom Cash and the American Express Blue Cash Preferred card for gas and groceries to maximize rewards.
Best Cash Back on Gas and Groceries: Blue Cash Preferred Card From American Express
Why we love this card: You can earn 3% back on gas at U.S. gas stations using one of several different cards with no annual fee. However, pairing 3% percent rewards with 6% cash back on up to $6,000 on U.S. supermarket purchases is something worth paying $95 a year for. Add in a great extended warranty benefit*, return protection* and purchase protection*, and the Blue Cash Preferred card ends up being a great fit for many households.
Who should have this in their wallet: The primary grocery shopper in any household should consider getting the Blue Cash Preferred card for its 6% on U.S. supermarket purchases. If you spend $6,000 a year at U.S. supermarkets (1% cash back after the cap), you’ll maximize this cash back category and earn well more than the annual fee in rewards. The additional 3% you can earn at U.S. gas stations will fill up your cash back balance as you fill up your tank.
Other cards to consider: The Blue Cash Preferred’s no-annual-fee sibling is the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express. The Everyday Card will get you 3% back on up to $6,000 in spending at U.S. Supermarkets, 3% back on up to $6,000 in spending at U.S. gas stations and 3% back on up to $6,000 in spending with U.S. online retail merchants (after which you’ll earn 1% cash back in each category). If you like the Blue Cash Preferred’s rewards, but are averse to paying an annual fee, consider the Blue Cash Everyday.
Best Unlimited Gas Rewards: U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature
Why we love this card: The U.S. Bank Altitude Connect card is a rare card that offers more than 3% unlimited rewards on gas spending. This card carries an annual fee, but if you spend $10,000 or more at the pump each year, the Altitude Connect will earn you the most rewards on gas.
Who should have this in their wallet: If you spend a lot (more than $10,000 annually) on gas, the best card you can carry for those purchases is the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Card. Whether you’re a fleet manager, an Uber driver, travel extensively by car for business or just spend a lot on gas for any other reason, the Altitude Connect is the card you want. This card might also make sense if you spend slightly less on gas but can take advantage of the 5X points on travel booked through Altitude Rewards.
Other cards to consider: If you want uncapped gas rewards but don’t spend enough to justify a card with a $95/year annual fee, consider a card like the Wells Fargo Autograph. This no-annual-fee card is a great option that will still get you unlimited 3X points on your gas purchases, plus rewards in a handful of other bonus categories.
Best for Costco Members: Costco Anywhere Visa Card
Why we love this card: Although the Costco Anywhere Visa Card has a cap on the 4% rewards you can earn on gas, most families won’t spend more than $7,000 annually to cross that threshold. Getting 4% back on gas and 3% back on restaurants and travel makes for a solid rewards card that should be in the wallet of any Costco member.
Who should have this in their wallet: If you have a Costco membership, you are likely a value-conscious consumer who enjoys the rewards and savings from shopping for the best deal. The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is a great deal for cash back rewards on gas, especially if you’re already a Costco member.
Other cards to consider: Many cash back credit cards exclude gas purchases made at warehouse clubs. If you shop at Costco and don’t carry the Costco credit card, use a Visa card that earns a good rewards rate on all purchases instead. One such option is the Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards credit card or, if you are a small-business owner, the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.
Best for Sam’s Club Members: Sam’s Club Mastercard
Why we love this card: Earning 5% cash back on gas is one of the most generous rewards rates you’ll find on your at-the-pump purchases, and the Sam’s Club Mastercard offers just that—as long as you are a Sam’s Club member. This card has no annual fee with your paid Sam’s Club membership, making it a must-get card for anyone who buys gas and is already a member.
Who should have this in their wallet: Value-seeking Sam’s Club members who buy gas should almost certainly pick up the Sam’s Club Mastercard. Its 5% rewards make it one of the best cards you can use for gas, either at Sam’s Club pumps or traditional gas stations.
Other cards to consider: Other cards may not earn you any additional cash back on gas purchases made at locations like Sam’s Club; in fact, gas purchased at warehouse clubs is often excluded from bonus categories. Using a gas credit card other than the Sam’s Club Mastercard for your Sam’s Club gas purchases may not earn you the rewards you’re expecting. Instead, the Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards credit card or the Chase Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card might be a better bet, especially if you want to just earn a solid rewards rate on all purchases.
Best for Gas and Other Bonus Categories: Wells Fargo Autograph Card
Why we love this card: The Wells Fargo Autograph Card offers 3X points on a long list of bonus categories that are both useful and unlimited. With no annual fee, the card makes sense for almost any consumer. For most people, especially those who don’t want to carry around dozens of cards to maximize rewards, the Autograph alone can replace a small handful of other rewards cards in your arsenal
Who should have this in their wallet: The busy consumer who wants value and simplicity should consider the Wells Fargo Autograph Card. This card offers 3X points on spending in many common categories, meaning that you can both earn generous rewards and carry fewer cards around.
Other cards to consider: If you want the simplicity of carrying a single card that earns rewards in lots of bonus categories, the Citi Premier Card is worth a look. It offers 3X points on a bunch of travel-related spending plus gas and supermarkets, all for a $95 annual fee. Alternatively, take a look at one of the many cards that earns 2% back everywhere, like the Citi Double Cash® Card (which earns 1% when you buy and another 1% as you pay off your balance) or the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card .
Best Quarterly Categories: Chase Freedom Flex
Why we love this card: The Chase Freedom Flex offers the opportunity to earn 5% cash back in categories that aren’t offered elsewhere (up to $1,500 in spending on activated bonus categories each quarter, then 1%). Even though the card’s bonus categories rotate every three months, we find that Chase selects bonus categories that are easy to use and maximize. Plus, with no annual fee, there’s no cost to keeping the Freedom Flex card through quarters when Chase publishes categories that don’t mesh with your spending patterns.
Who should have this in their wallet: Rewards maximizers who want to optimize spending around rewards should carry the Chase Freedom Flex. You can earn plenty of rewards with the Chase Freedom Flex, but you need to pay attention to which bonus categories are on offer during each quarter.
Other cards to consider: If you want simple cash back rewards on every purchase and aren’t excited about signing up for rotating categories each quarter, look at the Chase Freedom Unlimited® . It currently offers the same cash back bonus on gas station and grocery store purchases as the Freedom Flex, without the hassle of quarterly categories. Plus this card also earns 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases, 5% back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards and 1.5% back on everything else.
Best Transferable Points Card: Citi Premier Card
Why we love this card: The Citi Premier Card offers more than 2X points on several categories and more flexibility in how you redeem points. This card’s 3X points on hotels, air travel, restaurants, gas and supermarkets means you can earn more rewards in more places than most other cards. Plus, ThankYou points can be redeemed for cash back or transferred to airline travel transfer partners for maximum flexibility.
Who should have this in their wallet: The avid travel rewards collector who is invested in the Citi ThankYou points ecosystem should consider carrying this card. Not only is it the lone product currently available to new cardmembers that allows ThankYou point transfers to most of Citi’s travel transfer partners, but it earns generous rewards in a wide range of categories.
Other cards to consider: You won’t find other cards offering unlimited 3X transferable points on gas purchases. If you want transferable points on your gas purchases, a product that offers 2X points on everything, like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, is probably your best bet. You could also look at the Chase Freedom Flex for its limited-time cash back offer on gas and groceries. Just be aware that the Freedom Flex will only offer 5% back on gas and groceries for the first $12,000 in spending during the first year, after which you’ll earn 1%.
Best for Gas and Online Shopping: Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express
Why we love this card: Bonus cash back on U.S. online retail purchases is what makes the Blue Cash Everyday Card unique. The card can increase the rewards you earn on online purchases without the need to get a store credit card at each place you shop.
Who should have this in their wallet: Online retail shoppers benefit the most from this card. If you prefer the comfort of your couch to taking trips to the mall, you’ll earn 3% cash back at many of the places you shop when you do your shopping virtually (on up to $6,000 in annual spending, then 1%).
Other cards to consider: If you’re not averse to paying an annual fee, you can earn more on gas and groceries with the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. When you go with the Blue Cash Preferred Card, you’ll get 6% cash back on your spending at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in spending per year, then 1%), plus an unlimited 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations.
What Is a Gas Credit Card?
A gas credit card earns increased rewards on gas purchases. It could earn cash back , points or miles, though it might have some sort of limit on the amount of rewards you can earn.
The most desirable gas credit cards commonly earn 3% or more back on gas purchases. While you can use a gas credit card for purchases other than gas, these cards generally offer only 1% rewards, or 1X points on general purchases.
In addition to general-use credit cards, some gas cards have membership restrictions or limits to where they can be used. Here are some other types of gas cards you might encounter:
- Credit cards requiring membership: These include cards that require a paid membership like the Costco Anywhere Visa or the Sam’s Club Mastercard.
- Co-branded credit cards: Credit cards that you can use anywhere, but that are either sponsored by a brand or earn points with a brand’s loyalty program are known as co-branded credit cards. Airline and hotel credit cards are the most common examples, but some gas station brands also offer co-branded cards.
- Store credit cards: Store credit cards are co-branded cards that can only be used at a specific retail store. These cards are often issued by smaller banks and won’t bear a Visa, Mastercard or American Express logo like general-use cards. Some national gas station chains offer store credit cards.
- Fleet cards: These cards are typically issued to businesses and distributed to authorized employees. If you have a fleet card, you can usually use it for gas at a specific brand of gas station. Fleet cards are managed and paid directly by the business.
Who Should Have a Credit Card for Gas?
The more you spend on gas, the more it makes sense to seek out a credit card that earns additional rewards on gas purchases. For many Americans, gas is a very significant expense, often totaling several thousand dollars per year. Getting a few percent cash back on your gas purchases can add up to over $100 annually for many households.
You’re probably a good candidate for a gas card if you:
- Spend a lot of money on gas
- Want to keep your gas purchases separate from other purchases
- Can find a card that offers rewards on gas in addition to rewards that match up against your other spending
- Want more rewards on your credit card purchases
- Enjoy the fraud protections offered by many credit cards
Even if you don’t spend a lot on gas, you should always use a credit card for your gas purchases. Gas pump credit card terminals are often easy targets for skimmers, devices that can electronically steal your credit card number. Because credit cards offer more robust fraud protection than debit cards or prepaid cards, you won’t be on the hook for fraudulent purchases if someone steals your card information.
How Do I Choose the Best Gas Credit Card for Me?
Which gas card is the best for you will depend on your spending patterns, preferences and the other cards in your wallet.
Here are the biggest factors to consider when selecting the best gas credit card for you:
- How much you spend on gas
- What other cards are in your wallet
- How you’ll use the card outside of gas purchases
How Much You Spend on Gas
The biggest factor on whether a gas credit card is right for you is how much you spend on gas. If you drive minimally, don’t own a car or own an electric vehicle, it might not make sense to get a gas card. If you’re on the road every week for work and spend $1,000 on gas each month, you might consider a card with an annual fee that offers increased rewards on pump purchases.
Which Other Cards Are In Your Wallet
If you already have a card that offers 2% cash back rewards everywhere and are considering applying for a card offering 3% rewards on gas, consider that you’ll only be earning 1% marginal rewards on your gas. The amount of marginal rewards you earn should determine whether adding the complexity of another card, or even paying an annual fee, is worth it for you.
How You’ll Use the Card Outside of Gas Purchases
You could get a card solely to use for your gas purchases, but most people will want a card that’s useful in other categories as well. When looking at gas cards, consider the whole picture of how you might use the card.
Cards that earn increased cash back in several categories might be more useful to you than the card that earns the most cash back on gas. Don’t forget the value of card benefits either. A card offering a robust extended warranty benefit may be more meaningful than a card offering a few dollars of additional cash back.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should i use a hotel credit card for gas.
Many hotel credit cards offer a large number of points for gas, but it’s important to remember that not all points are created equal. Often, the hotel rewards you earn on gas will be worth less than the 3% rewards you could get with a cash back card.
How Do I Protect My Credit Card at My Gas Pump?
Gas pump credit card terminals are a common location for people who install devices called skimmers, which can steal your credit card number when you pay. Using tap-to-pay or a mobile wallet offers more security than inserting a chip card or swiping a magnetic stripe.
Before you use your card at the pump, examine the credit card reader and terminal. If it appears parts are loose or have been tampered with, it’s best to pay inside the station.
Should I Use My Credit Card At the Gas Pump?
You should always use a credit card when you pay at the pump. Credit cards offer stronger protections against fraud than debit cards and prepaid cards. If someone steals your credit card number, you will have $0 liability for the fraud in most cases.
