However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. The tour was well put together, the tour guide was excellent, the quality of the accommodation differed at each destination. The Clarion in Nashville was average but clean but the breakfast was not good especially the fact that we were given paper plates and plastic cutlery. The Guest House at Graceland was fabulous but did not include any breakfast which was a little disappointing. The Natchez Hotel (Hampton Inn) was dreadful as we had fungus growing behind the curtains. The breakfast again was dreadful with paper plates and plastic cutlery. The Wyndham in New Orleans was pretty good but the the breakfast which was not included was expensive and not good. Most hotels did not include tea only coffee and The Guest House would chargeover $8 if you asked for a tea bag.

There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. 22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. The “Mississippi Sings the Blues” shore excursion visits iconic sites along the Mississippi Blues Trail such as historic Dockery Farms, considered the “birthplace of the blues.”

Inaugurated in 2023, the 91-cabin American Serenade won Best New River Cruise Ship of the Year 2023 by Cruise Critic , the first time an American ship has received this prestigious award.

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

The 12-day voyage departs from New Orleans on July 2. Ports of call along the way include Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Natchez and Vicksburg in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; and Paducah in Kentucky . 9-day Upper Mississippi River Cruise: St. Louis to St. Paul

1 New Orleans, LA (Pre-Cruise Hotel) Each Mississippi itinerary comes complete with a Hotel Stay, providing you with a seamless way to board the ship and explore the local area. On the morning of the cruise, meet in the hotel lobby and we will transport you to the ship to begin your cruise. All luggage will be brought directly from the hotel and placed in your stateroom aboard the ship.

2 Embark in New Orleans, LA Begin your Deep South adventure by exploring the Big Easy! Enjoy the Cajun-inspired food and music, as well as the area’s most beautiful attractions, including the French Quarter, the garden district, and more.

3 Oak Alley, LA The paddlewheel will pull right alongside the riverbank, allowing you to step off the ship right in front of the leafy canopy of Oak Alley – row of perfectly aligned 300 year old trees that perfectly frame the path to the plantation. After the tour of the antebellum plantation, we’ll gather for mint juleps on the west lawn.

4 Houmas House, LA Houmas House is often considered one of the favorite plantations on the Mississippi River to visit. 38 acres of gardens. 16 rooms filled will period art and antiques. Your host will share many stories about the inhabitants of Houmas House, as well as lead many conversations about humor and songs in the South.

5 Baton Rouge, LA The great state capital has its own cultural flavor and flair. After breakfast, you’ll be greeted by those who will welcome you to Baton Rouge, and maybe provide a few Mardi Gras beads. Meet the ghost of the Old State Capital, Sarah Morgan, and tour the new Louisiana State Capitol, the tallest state capitol in the country.

6 St. Francisville, LA This is an exciting day! Your complimentary excursion is a tour of Rosedown Plantation. Learn about the family history of the Turnbulls, as well as time to relax in a rocking chair on the front porch, with a cold drink.

7 Natchez, MS Enjoy a private city tour with a local expert guide who can point out the influences of different people, from the indigenous Native American to the European and African cultures. You’ll visit the unfinished Longwood Plantation, left undone when the workers immediately left mid-job to fight in the Civil War. 12 Cape Girardeau, MO This old French trading post and river port remains loyal to its heritage and continues to share that history with all visitors. Best cruise for Civil War history: Lower Mississippi (round-trip New Orleans)

The Deep South attracts history buffs with its Civil War battlefields and cemeteries and 18th- and 19th-century mansions guarded by regiments of live oaks. Both cruise lines offer a Lower Mississippi river cruise, sailing round-trip from New Orleans, but only one features multiple excursions geared to those with a keen interest in the 19th-century conflict.

On American Cruise Lines' eight-day New Orleans to New Orleans itinerary , cruisers can visit Vicksburg, Mississippi, where the National Military Park commemorates the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg in 1863. In Louisiana's capital, Baton Rouge, a guided excursion explores critical locations in the Civil War's Battle of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson.

Other ports bring to life the pre-war South. In Oak Alley, Louisiana, guests can tour a Greek Revival mansion on a sugar plantation built and maintained by slaves. While no Civil War fighting took place in Natchez, Mississippi, the city is home to hundreds of lavish mansions from the era and the Historic Natchez Cemetery, which dates to 1822.

This itinerary is offered on five American Cruise Lines ships, ranging from the 150-passenger classic paddlewheeler American Heritage to the 180-passenger modern riverboat American Serenade. The journey starts in New Orleans and stops in Baton Rouge; Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi; Memphis; and St. Louis, where passengers can explore attractions like Gateway Arch National Park and the flagship Anheuser-Busch brewery. American Queen Voyages: New Orleans to Memphis

Sail along the Lower Mississippi from New Orleans to Memphis on this nine-day cruise, which starts with a complimentary stay in New Orleans and a second day to enjoy the Big Easy. Then, it's on to Nottoway Resort and St. Francisville in Louisiana and Natchez, Vicksburg, and Greenville in Mississippi before a day of cruising through the Delta and disembarking in Memphis. There are a few different paddle-wheel riverboats that cruise this route for American Queen Voyages — find the specific ship for your journey when you select a date.

American Cruise Lines: Upper Mississippi River Cruise

This eight-day cruise starts in St. Louis and sails along the Upper Mississippi to St. Paul. Stops along the way include Hannibal, Missouri; Fort Madison, Davenport, and Dubuque, Iowa; and Winona and Red Wing, Minnesota. Several riverboats cruise this route, including American Melody and American Symphony , inaugurated in 2021 and 2022, respectively. These sister vessels offer large rooms and suites with contemporary furnishings and an upscale feel.

A Look at The Mississippi River Fleet for 2024

With American Queen Voyages ceasing operations , the number of cruise ships on the Mississippi River is diminishing in 2024.

Two cruise lines are set to offer itineraries along the U.S. domestic waterway this year, including American Cruise Lines and Viking.

Cruise Industry News lists all of the vessels sailing on the Mississippi in 2024.

American Serenade Cruise Line: American Cruise Lines Type: Modern riverboat  Built: 2023 Capacity:  175 guests Tonnage:  5,148

After entering service for American Cruise Lines in 2023 , the American Serenade will be the newest cruise ship in operation on the Mississippi River this year.

For its second season, the 175-guest vessel is currently offering itineraries that cover the entire length of the Mississippi River and also include sailings to other waterways, such as the Ohio, the Cumberland, and the Tennessee.

American Symphony Cruise Line: American Cruise Lines Type: Modern riverboat  Built: 2022 Capacity:  175 guests Tonnage:  5,148

Custom-designed to sail on the Mississippi , the American Symphony is marking its third season on the river in 2024.

Part of American Cruise Lines’ Modern Riverboat Series, the 2022-built vessel is set to offer a series of itineraries along both the Lower and Upper Mississippi, in addition to cruises that also sail to the Tennessee, Cumberland and Ohio rivers.

American Melody Cruise Line: American Cruise Lines Type: Modern riverboat  Built: 2021 Capacity:  175 guests Tonnage:  5, 148

Also part of American Cruise Lines’ series of modern riverboats, the American Melody entered service in 2021 .

In 2023, the 175-guest vessel will offer seven- to 23-night cruises that sail along the Mississippi, Tennessee, Cumberland, and Ohio rivers. Some of the itineraries can be combined with land-based tours that include visits to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

American Splendor Cruise Line: American Cruise Lines Type: Classic paddle-wheeler Built: 2016 Capacity:  185 guests Tonnage:  2,000

After undergoing a major refurbishment in 2022 , the American Splendor continues to sail on the Mississippi River in 2024.

One of American Cruise Lines’ classic paddle-wheelers, the 185-guest vessel is set to offer four different itineraries during the season, which include destinations in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, Alabama and Missouri.

American Heritage Cruise Line: American Cruise Lines Type: Classic paddle-wheeler Built: 2015 Capacity:  149 guests Tonnage:  3,800

Previously named the Queen of the Mississippi , the American Heritage is another paddle-wheeler operated by American Cruise Lines.

Built in 2015, the 149-guest cruise ship is scheduled to offer three seven- to 11-night itineraries across the Lower Mississippi in 2024. Additionally, it will offer a 15-night itinerary that focuses on the Ohio River and sails all the way to Pittsburgh.

Viking Mississippi Cruise Line: Viking Type: European-style modern riverboat Built: 2022 Capacity:  386 guests Tonnage:  10,000

The Viking Mississippi is the largest cruise ship sailing on the Mississippi River. After entering service in 2022 , the 10,000-ton European-style riverboat continues to offer itineraries across both the Upper and Lower river regions.

American Cruise Lines has purchased four American Queen Voyages river ships plus other assets, according to a court filing.

“American Cruise Lines is pleased to be the successful bidder for AQV’s river vessels. We look forward to announcing additional details as we move through the bankruptcy process,” the company said in a statement.

Sale Prices:

• American Queen: $2,150,000
• American Empress: $1,600,000
• American Countess: $1,600,000 American Duchess: $200,000
• Certain other related assets, including, among other things, trademarks associated with American Queen Voyages™ (“AQV”), website domain names associated with AQV, and certain business records: $750,000.

An auction was held for the assets, including the coastal ships, following American Queen’s bankruptcy, with American Cruise Lines emerging as the winner of the river fleet. It is unknown who emerged as the buyer of the two coastal ships in the company’s fleet, the Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager.

American Queen Voyages, which operated river cruise boats that dock in Natchez, ceased all operations as of Feb. 24 and abruptly cancelled all future voyages.

American Queen Voyages was one of three cruise companies which docks in Natchez and Vidalia, La. American Queen Voyages operates the American Queen and the American Countess, both of which have been docking in Natchez during the past year, and the American Duchess on the Mississippi River. The American Queen is the largest paddlewheel steamboat ever built and has long docked in Natchez.

At the time, Natche z Mayor Dan Gibson said he was optimistic that the boats would return. “We are so grateful to American Queen for all of the years they supported Natchez and we are optimistic that there will be eventually a transition to another owner,” he said. “I’m hopeful this will be a temporary lapse in their ability to bring tourists to Natchez.”

On Monday, Gibson shared his thoughts on the news of the purchase.

“As our country’s largest cruise company, and one that has supported Natchez now for many years, American Cruise Lines is in the perfect position to carry on this American tradition. At City Hall, we consider this great news. And we wish them every success as they bring this great boat back to the river,” he said.

2 Mississippi catfish farms settle suit alleging immigrants were paid more than local Black workers

Attorneys say two Mississippi catfish farms have settled a lawsuit over using immigrant workers and paying them more than they paid local Black farmworkers

JACKSON, Miss. -- Two Mississippi catfish farms have settled a lawsuit alleging that they brought workers from Mexico to the U.S. and paid them significantly more than they previously paid local Black farmworkers for the same type of labor, plaintiffs' attorneys said Tuesday.

Southern Migrant Legal Services and Mississippi Center for Justice sued Jerry Nobile, his son Will Nobile and their farms in August on behalf of 14 Black farmworkers. The federal lawsuit said the Black workers were “systematically underpaid and denied job opportunities for years in favor of non-Black foreign workers" at Nobile Fish Farms, which also raise corn and soybeans.

The plaintiffs' attorneys said the lawsuit concluded on “mutually agreeable terms” under a confidential settlement.

Court records show the lawsuit against Nobile Fish Farms was settled in February. Mississippi Center for Justice attorney Rob McDuff told The Associated Press that the settlement was announced Tuesday because “all the terms of the settlement have been fulfilled.”

“We hope our legal efforts will make clear to farmers in the Delta, and across the U.S., that they need to pay fair wages to local workers,” McDuff said in a statement Wednesday.

An attorney for Nobile Fish Farms was out of town Tuesday and did not immediately respond to a phone message from the AP.

It was the eighth settlement on behalf of Black farmworkers who said they were pushed aside after higher-paid immigrants were hired at farms in the Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest parts of the United States. Five of the settlements were reached without lawsuits being filed, according to Southern Migrant Legal Services and Mississippi Center for Justice.

In December 2022, two farms settled lawsuits over claims that they hired white laborers from South Africa and paid them more than the local Black employees for the same type of work.

All three of the lawsuits were against farms in Sunflower County, which is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Jackson. The county's population is just under 24,500, and about 74% of residents are Black, according to the Census Bureau.

Hannah Wolf, a Southern Migrant Legal Services attorney in the case against Nobile Fish Farms, said the H-2A guest worker program requires employers to try hire local workers before bringing immigrant workers, “but we continue to hear from U.S. workers who report being pushed out of their jobs and replaced with guest workers.”

"We will continue to investigate those claims and bring legal action when warranted,” Wolf said.
