CSS Announce First North American Tour in 11 Years

By Nina Corcoran

Ana Rezende Carolina Parra Lovefoxxx and Luiza S

A decade after going on hiatus, the Brazilian electropop group CSS have returned and are ready to hit the road. CSS will embark on a North American tour—their first in 11 years—to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their formation. It kicks off on May 3 at Black Cat in Washington, D.C., and brings CSS to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco, among other cities, before concluding on May 18 at Just Like Heaven Festival . Find the complete list of tour dates below.

“I DJ often, and I am approached by fans who tell me how much ‘we’ve helped them figure out themselves,’ ‘showed a way out’ out of societal norms, and even ‘inspired them to be who they are’—which melts my heart because most of these fans are delicate queer creative people,” said lead singer Lovefoxxx . “We are deeply united by our sense of humor and our deep sisterhood and friendship. It’s so nice to know we touched some people and are still harvesting this love 20 years later.”

CSS released four studio albums during their original run: 2006’s Cansei De Ser Sexy , 2008’s Donkey , 2011’s La Liberación , and 2013’s Planta . The latter marked their first without longtime member Adriano Cintra.

CSS Reform and Announce First North American Tour in 11 Years

“it’s been a number of years tour 2024” celebrates the band’s 20th anniversary.

Brazil’s CSS (aka Cansei de Ser Sexy) have reformed and announced their first North American tour in 11 years. The fittingly named “It’s Been a Number of Years Tour 2024” also celebrates the band’s 20th Anniversary. Tickets go on sale this Thursday, January 25, at 10 a.m. local time. Check out the tour dates below.

The band features Lovefoxxx (aka Luísa Hanae Matsushita), Ana Rezende, Carolina Parra, and Luiza Sá. CSS formed in 2003 and the band’s debut album, Cansei de Ser Sexy , came out in Brazil in 2005 and got a U.S. release in 2006 via Sub Pop. The well-received album included the memorable single “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above.” Three more albums followed, with another highlight being “Hit Me Like a Rock,” a duet with Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, from their 2011-released third album, La Liberación . The band’s last album was 2013’s Planta .

Lovefoxxx had this to say in a press release: “Even though we weren’t active for 20 years straight, it’s bananas to come back in 2024 to celebrate these two decades. I DJ often, and I am approached by fans who tell me how much ‘we’ve helped them figure out themselves,’ ‘showed a way out’ out of societal norms, and even ‘inspired them to be who they are’—which melts my heart because most of these fans are delicate queer creative people.

“CSS always had this stance of not taking itself seriously and it is still true. We first got together because we wanted an excuse to live and work at the right time. We are deeply united by our sense of humor and our deep sisterhood and friendship. It’s so nice to know we touched some people and are still harvesting this love 20 years later.

“So since the cycle of life can’t be stopped and trends come back after 20 years: demand came and we are honored to do a celebration tour. Sing the hits and non hits. Jump around, make jokes, reconnect with this energy that only CSS delivers to us and give it a go, for the naive times, for the raw and crazy, to fall in love again in the clubs, once more!”

Lovefoxxx adds: “What keeps us together as friends and probably helped convince us to reunite as a band is our humor. We laugh at the same stuff. We have our own language.”

More about CSS ? When the members of CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) slowly started drifting away from the project in 2014, it wasn’t due to a lack of passion. Rather, they decided to pursue other projects because the band had become a job—an ironic twist considering its members started the group to get out of the monotony of day jobs. When the gang of friends decided to pursue music in 2003, they did so as a way to leave work early and perform at clubs. “In São Paulo,” bandleader and vocalist Lovefoxxx explains,  “if you did creative things, it was easier to get off work to perform shows.”  And so, CSS was born out of a passion for laughter, dance music, and, yes, the occasional chance to ditch the 9-5 job. Fast forward 20 years and the band is bringing its vaunted live show back on the road—a decade after they decided that playing shows nine months out of the year wasn’t sustainable. Armed with a revived live show, CSS is bringing their signature hits back to venues across the world, getting back on the road because there’s nothing better than globetrotting and partying in new cities with your best friends.

It made sense to begin this next phase of CSS by honouring the band’s powerful, triumphant live shows. This reemergence is for the love of music, as uncynical of a pursuit as any that has existed. There’s no pressure to promote new music, push vinyl, or rehearse new music until perfected. Rather, the group members—who speak to each other every day and have since the band took a breather—decided it would be a blast to remember the old times, and introduce a whole new group of listeners to their thrilling music. Part of the band’s decision to do this tour now as opposed to at any other moment came from promoters gauging interest for a new tour from the group. They found this interest touching. A validation that the project was worthwhile.  “The fact that we are still resonating is surprising to me. It shows that we truly touched a generation. We were never meant to be role models or inspire. We just wanted to enjoy ourselves. There’s immense power in it,”  says Lovefoxxx. “What keeps us together as friends and probably helped convince us to reunite as a band is our humour. We laugh at the same stuff. We have our own language,”  Lovefoxxx concludes. The band wanted to do this journey one more time, and a 20th anniversary tour seemed like the best place to begin. While prepping the run, they’ve Zoomed and called and minimized the distances between them now that all four members are spread across the world. No matter how serious planning gets, or how stressful the prospect of a reunion may be, that sense of humor keeps things in perspective.  “it’s something that doesn’t get old. It ages nicely,” adds Lovefoxxx . “This silliness is so important to us.”

CSS tell us about their 20th anniversary UK and European tour: “Spontaneity is timeless”

Check out details of the new rave icons' first UK and European shows in 11 years as Lovefoxxx tells NME about spearheading indie sleaze, the chances of new material, and if there's hope of them popping up at Glastonbury...

CSS have announced details of their first UK tour in 11 years as part of their 20th anniversary European ‘It’s Been A Number Of Years Tour’ for this summer. Check out dates below, along with our interview with frontwoman Lovefoxxx.

The Brazilian new rave icons haven’t toured fully since their 2013 album ‘ Planta ‘. Now, the ‘Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above’ stars – formed of  Lovefoxxx, Ana Rezende, Carolina Parra and Luiza Sá – have returned to reform CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) to mark two decades since they first formed.

“It’s a bit of a surprise to have so many years to celebrate,” Lovefoxxx told NME earlier this week, speaking from her art studio in Sao Paulo where she now works as an artist. “A lot of people still want to see us and think that we were special to them at some point in their lives. It was special for us, for sure.”

Check out all the details below, as well as Lovefoxxx telling us about the highs and higher highs of their ’00s peak, spearheading indie sleaze, what to expect from the gigs, the chances of new material, and if there’s hope of them popping up at Glastonbury…

NME: Hello, Lovefoxxx. What do you think the secret is to CSS’ long-lasting legacy and influence?

Lovefoxxx : “It’s because we’ve always been spontaneous. Spontaneity is timeless, and that’s why we aged well.”

How did it feel seeing the recent indie sleaze phenomenon celebrating the aesthetic you helped to create?

“I love the 20 year cycles. When I was 19, I used to love the ‘80s and it felt like it was so long ago because I was born as it was happening. It’s funny when you see the cycle going after you’ve grown up – it goes faster. It doesn’t seem like 20 years ago.”

Do you feel like CSS could have only been born 20 years ago?

Recommended.

“We were not so aware of all the climate emergencies, so it was a last call to have this kind of fun without knowing that the world was melting. There wasn’t so much internet, so it was a last call for the analogue world too. People were still taking photos with 35mm cameras and digital cameras. The first time someone asked me to take a selfie was in Chile in 2010; I remember that very well!”

Do you think people miss that in-the-moment physical sense of culture?

“I think the people who lived it miss it. I can’t say for the Gen Z people who only know this reality, but I can tell from my 14-year-old stepson – who’s listening to CDs and isn’t constantly on TikTok – that there’s hope!”

Do you see many modern artists today with your same spirit, energy and ethos?

“Many girl bands are influenced by us, and they’re a generation who are nicer than we were because they come and tell us that we influenced them. I can hear our energy in their music. Like Chai from Japan, they’re one of those bands. La Roux too, from back in the day. There are so many.”

How would you describe your relationship to CSS’ fans?

“When we started, we just wanted to get out of work on time and have some pre-drinks. By being so authentic to this simple idea of having fun, you end up representing so many people. People just want to get with their friends and do something creative out of the 9-5 routine. Just by attending to this basic need, we ended up representing so many people. That blows my mind. I see artists now defending topics online, and there are a lot of conversations about mental health (which is very positive), but back in day we were just like ‘WAAAH!’ That was it. It would change your life.

“I’ve always DJed here and there, and I always end up having very deep conversations. I know that CSS fans are delicate people: kind of shy and creative. I’m very proud of that. I never met a [former Brazilian president Jai] Bolsonaro voter that’s a fan of CSS! He doesn’t like women, and we don’t like him – so fuck him!”

What were some of your real highlights of the halcyon ’00s days?

“Playing with Gossip at Roadhouse in Manchester [in 2007] – my kidney is still aching from that show! Meeting our idols; like Peaches in Berlin, meeting Gossip, playing with New Young Pony Club on the 2007 NME Indie Rave Tour [also featuring Klaxons , and The Sunshine Underground ]. I look at photos from the time and the people going to those shows was a baby! We were babies! We were so cute.

“Going to Iceland Airwaves, playing Istanbul and hanging out with Peter Bjorn and John in catering; it was just the best times ever. I loved meeting the whole world – we’ve played in Russia, we’ve played in Casablanca. We played Morocco and there was a tiny girl in a burka in the front row. I had food poisoning and diarrhoea the whole time but I told myself, ‘I’m going to keep it in for that girl!’

Are you guys all still in touch?

“Instagram makes things easier. I spoke to Tahita [Bulmber, singer] from New Young Pony Club recently, and I also saw Sarah [Jones, drummer] who now plays with Harry Styles when he was touring in Brazil. I’ve always been closer to girls than guys, so I keep in touch with some of them.”

What can we expect from the upcoming tour?

“This is a reunion, not a comeback. All of this started because a UK promoter wrote to us a year ago and reminded us that our 20th anniversary was coming up. ‘Don’t you want to do a celebratory tour?’ Yeah, we do! So we’re gonna play the hits. I don’t think we’re going to make new albums, so this is a chance to be nostalgic. It’s going to be very nostalgic for us too, because I remember playing those shows 15-20 years ago, but it’ll be nice to be back. I turn 40 this Sunday, so it’ll be nice to do this again with an adult presence.

“We played a show in December at Primavera Sao Paulo and I noticed I had so much energy. I had more breath, and I think that must be because I’m healthier now and don’t drink as much. It’ll be fun to see how the energy translates. Also, people in the UK are mental! I’ve never seen a mosh pit like that. People say that people in Brazil and Mexico are wild, but the UK always goes beyond. I’m excited to see that again.”

No plans for new material then? You released fourth album ‘Planta’ in 2013 before disappearing then teased some new songs in 2021 . Will you be bringing them out or is this is just a party?

“It’s just a party. We were coming back in 2019 and making demos, but then the pandemic came. We have so much going on in our lives now – besides the band – with work and careers. The girls live in Los Angeles and I am the only one living in Sao Paulo, which makes it difficult. We don’t really have the time now to get back and make an album, but we do have demos.”

“I don’t want to tease or anything. But the last time we played in the UK was 2013, so I don’t think that people will want to see us 11 years later with new material, right? They want the stuff that they know, and that’s what we’re going to do. We’re here to celebrate our 20 years as friends and as a band. We’re doing this one more time. It’s a reunion, not a comeback.”

The tour dates are also around the time of Glastonbury 2024. Might we see you pop up there at some point?

“I would like to, but I don’t think so. I think that boat has sailed. That would be wonderful, but for the moment we don’t think we’ll be playing Glastonbury. I just hope people come to these shows. I wonder what kind of crowd we will have. Will it be the millennials that came to our shows when we were all babies, or Gen Z? When we played in Sao Paulo there were a lot of Gen Z weirdos, which I always love to see.”

CSS 2024 tour dates

Brazilian indie rock stalwarts, CSS  have announced their return! The band has ended their hiatus with the announcement of their first American tour in 11 years: IT’S BEEN A NUMBER OF YEARS TOUR 2024 .

CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) , made up of band members Lovefoxxx, Ana Rezende, Carolina Parra and Luiza Sá will also celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. While the band is focused on their tour dates, no mention has been made of new music.

The highly anticipated limited tour is finally here, and it’s going to be one for the books, especially for those of us who were part of the indie aughts scene. It all kicks off on May 3rd in Washington, DC and wraps up at California’s Just Like Heaven Festival .

Tickets are on sale now for shows in Washington DC , Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco , along with shows in New York, Boston, Minneapolis , and Chicago . In addition to CSS’s Just Like Heaven festival date, the group will also perform at the Kilby Block Party in Utah .

“Even though we weren’t active for 20 years straight, it’s bananas to come back in 2024 to celebrate these two decades.  Lovefoxxx  says, “I DJ often, and I am approached by fans who tell me how much “we’ve helped them figure out themselves”, “showed a way out” out of societal norms, and even “inspired them to be who they are” – which melts my heart because most of these fans are delicate queer creative people.

CSS always had this stance of not taking itself seriously and it is still true. We first got together because we wanted an excuse to live and work at the right time. We are deeply united by our sense of humor and our deep sisterhood and friendship. It’s so nice to know we touched some people and are still harvesting this love 20 years later.

So since the cycle of life can’t be stopped and trends come back after 20 years: demand came and we are honored to do a celebration tour. Sing the hits and non hits. Jump around, make jokes, reconnect with this energy that only CSS delivers to us and give it a go, for the naive times, for the raw and crazy, to fall in love again in the clubs, once more!”

CSS, or, if you're not a fan of initials, Cansei de Ser Sexy, is such a fun band to get to see live in concert. I got to see them perform live at Reading, and the performance was certainly a wild one. The crowd was wild and cheering almost nonstop, and the show itself was full of strobelights and strong language, exactly what you'd expect from a band whose name literally translates to "I got tired of being sexy."

Their set began with a joke from the leadsinger comparing a cheerleader to Kirsten Dunst and got even more fun as it went along. Part of the fun of CSS, in my opinion, is that their unique blend of indie rock and electronic dance is accompanied by lyrics in both Brazilian and English, meaning that sometimes you only totally know what half of their songs are about.

Even with the slight language barrier, this band is absolutely a blast to see perform live because of the way that they rile up the crowd and generally just embody their own crazy love for music, screeching out thank yous and dancing around while prompting the audience to clap along furiously to their songs.

css band tour

Formed in 2003 in São Paulo by a group of friends with an unquenchable thirst for good times and indulgence in all things pop and art, CSS rose to notoriety with the help of a thriving creative community, underground club scene and a little thing called the internet. Pulling together their numerous talents, the band drew legions of international followers entranced by a universally accessible, albeit original and off the wall, look and style.

The first South American band to be signed to the label, their debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for “Tired of Being Sexy” – something Beyoncé Knowles once said she was) was released on Sub Pop in July of 2006. Danceable electro/rock songs littered with pop culture and sexual references translated with ease from the virtual online to live audiences, making CSS one of the most in-demand live shows from Europe to Japan. The band found themselves on the road with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Klaxons, Ladytron, and Diplo on an unending world tour.

The constant touring kept the spotlight fixed on the band and their popularity steadily growing. Early on, The New York Times described CSS as, “a gleeful throwback to early-1980s art-school pop,” on whose debut album, “smart, insubordinate fun reigns…” The Guardian pegged them as, “an unlikely, brilliantly wrong fusion of Tom Tom Club, dance culture and the Fall.” Under the Radar commented on Cansei de Ser Sexy, “CSS’s debut is the real deal: eleven cuts of infectiously syncopated, tuneful post-punk that just may be the summer’s perfect soundtrack.” Soon, vocalist Lovefoxx showed up at #3 on NME’s 2007 “Cool List.” And, in late 2007 the band’s “Music is My Hot, Hot Sex” was used in a worldwide iPod Touch ad, driving the song, nearly a year-and-a-half after its release, to become the highest charting single by a Brazilian band in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In November of 2007, the band began to craft their follow-up album, Donkey, in their São Paulo studio. Produced in Brazil by the band’s own Adriano Cintra and mixed in Los Angeles by Mark “Spike” Stent (whose credits include Madonna, Bjork, Massive Attack, U2, M.I.A., and Arcade Fire), Donkey is tough, street-ready, and recreates the frenetic energy of their live shows. And really, with CSS the live show is the thing. Equal parts dance party, urban circus, and out-and-out chaos, the band’s unaffected, unbridled joy in performance is for real and for you. The new album’s 11 tracks, honed to sharp perfection, shine bright and sacrifice none of the aggressive, unpretentious edge their audiences around the world have come to love. This summer it’s time to ride the Donkey!

CSS are: Adriano Cintra: Bass, vocals, backing vocals Ana Rezende dos Anjos: Keyboards and guitar Carolina Parra: Guitar, keyboard and backing vocals Lovefoxxx: Vocals Luiza Sá: Guitar, cowbell and keyboard

Donkey Produced by Adriano Cintra Engineered by Rodrigo Sanches Assisted by Djamir Filho, the Penguin At Trama, São Paulo, Brasil Mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent At Chalice Studios, Los Angeles, USA

CSS announces Summer 2024 UK & European Tour

CSS UK & European Tour 2024 poster

Lovefoxxx , Ana Rezende , Carolina Parra and Luiza Sá have reformed CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) to focus on live shows while celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band. The limited UK and EU leg of the tour starts on the 22nd of June in Glasgow and will end 7th of July in Porto, Portugal.

The tickets for the tour will go on sale on Monday, 26th February at 10am here .

“Even though we weren’t active for 20 years straight, it’s bananas to come back in 2024 to celebrate these two decades”. Lovefoxxx says, “I DJ often, and I am approached by fans who tell me how much ‘we’ve helped them figure out themselves’, ‘showed a way out’ out of societal norms, and even ‘inspired them to be who they are’ – which melts my heart because most of these fans are delicate queer, creative people.

CSS always had this stance of not taking itself seriously and it is still true. We first got together because we wanted an excuse to live and work at the right time. We are deeply united by our sense of humour and our deep sisterhood and friendship. It’s so nice to know we touched some people and are still harvesting this love 20 years later.

So since the cycle of life can’t be stopped and trends come back after 20 years: demand came and we are honoured to do a celebration tour. Sing the hits and non-hits. Jump around, make jokes, reconnect with this energy that only CSS delivers to us and give it a go, for the naive times, for the raw and crazy, to fall in love again in the clubs, once more”!

When the members of CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) slowly started drifting away from the project in 2014, it wasn’t due to a lack of passion. Rather, they decided to pursue other projects because the band had become a job – an ironic twist considering its members started the group to get out of the monotony of day jobs. When the gang of friends decided to pursue music in 2003, they did so as a way to leave work early and perform at clubs. “In São Paulo”, bandleader and vocalist Lovefoxxx explains: “if you did creative things, it was easier to get off work to perform shows”. And so, CSS was born out of a passion for laughter, dance music, and, yes, the occasional chance to ditch the 9-5 job. Fast forward 20 years and the band is bringing its vaunted live show back on the road – a decade after they decided that playing shows nine months out of the year wasn’t sustainable.

This re-emergence is for the love of music, as uncynical of a pursuit as any that has existed. There’s no pressure to promote new music, push vinyl, or rehearse new music until perfected. Rather, the group members – who speak to each other every day and have since the band took a breather – decided it would be a blast to remember the old times, and introduce a whole new group of listeners to their thrilling music.

There’s immense power in it”, says Lovefoxxx .

“What keeps us together as friends and probably helped convince us to reunite as a band is our humour. We laugh at the same stuff. We have our own language”, Lovefoxxx concludes . The band wanted to do this journey one more time, and a 20th anniversary tour seemed like the best place to begin. While prepping the run, they’ve Zoomed and called and minimised the distances between them now that all four members are spread across the world. No matter how serious planning gets, or how stressful the prospect of a reunion may be, that sense of humour keeps things in perspective. “It’s something that doesn’t get old. It ages nicely”, adds Lovefoxxx . “This silliness is so important to us”.
