For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.

Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.

On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .

If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.

Before you book, know the process

Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.

The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.

In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.

At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.

Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee

Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.

Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.

International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.

On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.

Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.

Restrictions: There are plenty

U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.

The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.

On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.

United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.

JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.

American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.

However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.

What to pack

Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.

When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.

“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.

“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)

Playgirl Ran a 'Sleep with Donald Trump' Contest in 1990?

About this rating

For years, claims have spread across social media platforms that Playgirl magazine ran a "Sleep with Donald Trump" contest in their August 1990 edition.

An X (formerly Twitter) post from 2023 stated , "That one time #Trump was in Playgirl for anyone to win a trip to his bed." Attached were four images that allegedly showed the contest in question.

We found posts about the claims on other social media platforms, including TikTok , Reddit and Instagram .

Playgirl did run a "Sleep with Donald Trump" contest, as we previously reported  in 2020. We reached out for further details to Playgirl, which confirmed the magazine had run the contest in its August 1990 edition, as well as in the "Coming Up" section in its July 1990 issue.

As we reported in 2020, Trump and his first wife Ivana were in the midst of their divorce around the time the photo contest was announced. The contest claimed it picked 25 winners, one for "each million of soon-to-be-ex-wife Ivana's prenuptial agreement." (The New York TImes reported in 1991 that she received $14 million in the divorce settlement.)

The prize for winning the contest was a pillowcase with Trump's face on it, as well as a copy of "Donald Trump: The Man, The Myth, The Scandal" by Joel Reed:

The magazine wasn't able to provide us with any further information about the winners of the contest.

Why Knicks vs. 76ers revolves around Joel Embiid, whose injury scare and time on bench helped define Game 1

The sixers lost game 1, and it was the non-embiid minutes that did them in.

NEW YORK -- Joel Embiid made one one the most electrifying plays of his career on Saturday, but it went from sensational to scary as soon as his feet hit the ground. With less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter of the Philadelphia 76ers ' playoff opener against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the NBA's reigning MVP threw the ball off the glass to himself and dunked on Knicks forward OG Anunoby . As his teammates started to celebrate, Embiid landed, grabbed at his left knee and fell to the floor. It is the same knee that Embiid had a surgical procedure on the meniscus in February.

Forward Kelly Oubre Jr. , the closest Sixer to Embiid on the court, quickly went from A) flexing at Embiid to B) trying to catch him as he fell to C) running back on defense. Oubre's first thought was "hell of a play," he said, "and then, oh shit."

When Embiid eventually got up, he walked to the locker room, and he didn't reemerge until moments before the third quarter was underway, after the rest of the team had done their usual halftime warmups. 

"We were in the huddle, and then I get on the court and No. 21 is there," Oubre said. "But that just goes to say he's resilient, he wants to win, he's going to do every single thing, he's going to put his body on the line."

Embiid wound up playing 20 minutes in the second half and 37 total. He finished with 29 points on 8-for-22 shooting (and 11-for-12 from the free throw line), eight rebounds and six assists. He was plus-14 in the 111-104 loss -- in the 11 minutes that he sat, Philadelphia was outscored by 21 points.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse said that Embiid would be assessed "just like we do after every game," and then Philadelphia will determine his status for Monday's Game 2. Asked if the team was strongly considering shutting Embiid down, Nurse said, "I don't think so. I think, listen, he's really a warrior and he's battling. And I think he absolutely wants to play, but let's see how he turns out here tonight." 

Embiid's alley-oop to himself was "an amazing play," Oubre said, "but yeah, man, it's scary. Our bodies are what we use as our vehicles out here, so, you know, it's tough. And he's 7-foot, 300 pounds. Might be [lighter] -- sorry, Jo, if I called you fat. He might be less weight. But I mean, it's tough, man. I couldn't even imagine being 7 feet and being able to move like a guard and do the things that I can do but being that big." 

It was also an ambitious play for someone who was working his way back after knee surgery, but that doesn't necessarily mean Nurse wants him to rein it in. In a basketball sense, Embiid's gambit worked.

"I just think that was the play that happened, and he pump-faked up and the guy jumped over the top of him and he had an angle," Nurse said. "I don't know, I'll have to look at it again, but I just think that kind of was the play that unfolded."

Embiid declined to speak to reporters postgame, but, wearing a towel and white sunglasses in the locker room, he debriefed with Sixers guard Kyle Lowry . 

For a team that lost Game 1 of a playoff series, the mood was remarkably positive. Oubre, who had five steals and served as the primary defender on Knicks star Jalen Brunson "did an unbelievable job tonight," Lowry said, as Brunson was limited to 22 points on 8-for-26 shooting and committed five turnovers. 

Nurse said that Philadelphia guard Tyrese Maxey "was really awesome in the second half," in which he scored 21 of his game-high 33 points. Knicks forward Josh Hart scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the two clutch, late-clock 3s he made were shots that the Sixers were willing to give up. 

"We had some really good possessions," Nurse added. "And even the possessions that they made their last four 3s on, I'm not sure I'm taking those possessions back. I think we were doing what we wanted to do there."

There were, however, several areas of concern, foremost among them the dismal defensive rebounding. The Knicks had an offensive rebounding rate of 51.8% and scored 26 second-chance points . At significantly less than 100%, Embiid struggled to keep Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein off the glass, but the centers, who grabbed a combined 12 offensive boards, weren't the only ones doing the damage -- Brunson and Hart grabbed a combined nine. 

"We gotta muddy it up a little more," Oubre said. "Get more physical, hit guys, block out. Everybody has to come in and crash. It's a five-man job, not just a one- or two-man job. Everybody has to come in there and just team rebound. 

On 4/20, Philadelphia's bench got smoked. The Knicks had 42 bench points to the Sixers' seven. New York reserve Miles McBride had 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting, made five of his seven 3-point attempts and was plus-37 in 28 minutes. With Embiid and Brunson on the bench at the beginning of the second quarter, "we didn't guard anybody," Nurse said. 

The Knicks hit 3s on three consecutive possessions, and "the crowd started getting into it," Oubre said. "They had the momentum." Philadelphia got that momentum back in the third quarter -- at one point they scored 32 points on 15 possessions -- but lost it again with Embiid on the bench in the fourth. 

Maxey said that, going forward, they have to be able to win the minutes "without the big fella."

When Embiid is on the floor, Hart said that New York needs to "be more disciplined," not let him get easy baskets and keep him off the free throw line. He said that Embiid's alley-oop to himself -- and trip to the locker room -- didn't affect the Knicks one way or another. 

"Obviously, a hell of a play on his end," Hart said. "But it didn't change anything with our thought process."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nearly two dozen veterans flew to the nation’s capital Saturday morning as a part of the First Coast Honor Flight .

The morning started with an escort of respect for 21 veterans through the Jacksonville International Airport before departing to Washington D.C. to visit several memorials.

World War II Navy Veteran Bill Speer, 97, made the special trip.

“In the Navy, I thought I was going to see the world. Go and see the world,” Speer said. “It feels like family. One big happy family.”

They spent the day visiting places like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the several different war memorials at The Mall, and even Arlington National Cemetery.

Candace Mabry, the organization’s president, said this was the fifth flight since 2020.

“Bless our Vietnam war veterans. They were told to not wear their uniform when they got back stateside. Rocks were thrown at them. They were called baby killers. To see their faces when we go through the airport and they are being honored, it brings tears to my eyes,” Mabry said.

Kenneth Wall and Frank Consentino served in the Navy during the Korean and Vietnam War periods.

They have become good friends.

“At the time that I joined, we were pretty well into Korea, and I thought that it was my duty as a United States citizen to put myself out and going into the military,” Wall said.

They are glad they got to share this experience with other fellow veterans.

“I grew up in a military family. It was just understood that we would go into the military and serve our country, and happily so,” Consentino said.

Many people stood in line with smiles on their faces to send these veterans off and say thank you.

“It is an overwhelming feeling. I think seeing everybody come together to celebrate the veterans and all they do for our country. I think it is super important and it was really heartwarming,” Emily Martinez said.

After the trip, all of the veterans will have a reunion in three weeks to recap the flight and share their experiences.

The ball for the next flight is already rolling. It is scheduled for Sept. 21.

Green racket: DC mayor took ‘economic development’ trip to Masters on taxpayers’ dime

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser may want a mulligan on this one.

The Democrat took a taxpayer-funded “sports and economic development” trip to last week’s Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

Bowser, 51, announced the jaunt on her public schedule and a spokeswoman for the mayor’s office confirmed that DC residents paid for all related travel expenses to get inside the gates at the fabled Augusta National Golf Club, DC News Now reported .

Susana Castillo, Bowser’s communications director, told the outlet that the mayor was invited by Jodie McLean and Deborah Ratner Salzberg, who are co-chairs of a city task force “to revitalize the Gallery Place and Chinatown Neighborhood.”

The spokeswoman did not disclose the total cost of the more than 500-mile flight south, nor did she immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

“No matter where I am, my team is working and always in touch with me at a moment’s notice,” Bowser added in a statement of her own to DC News Now.

The mayor has faced sharp criticism for her handling of a crime spike in the nation’s capital before pivoting last fall amid mass resignations by city police — including former chief Robert Contee III .

Violent crime surged 39% in the nation’s capital from 2022 to 2023, with homicides rising 35% and robberies up a whopping 67%.

In two recent high-profile incidents, armed carjackers stole the vehicles of an FBI agent and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), while a former federal official in the Trump administration was shot and killed by another car thief in February.

Bowser embraced the Black Lives Matter movement during the riots that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, but reversed course in 2023 to fight the city council over a radical crime bill that lightened sentencing for robberies, carjackings and other gun-related felonies.

Last year, she also opposed a progressive policing law that hampered officers’ ability to apprehend suspects and increased disciplinary measures, making them “scared to do their job,” according to Bowser.

The crime spike had briefly threatened a $515 million deal with Washington Wizards and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, who entertained moving the NBA and NHL teams to a new northern Virginia arena before reaching an agreement with Bowser to stay in the nation’s capital.

It’s unclear what other projects Bowser may be pursuing in Chinatown.

“As mayor, I frequently attended meetings and events to foster economic development, strengthen partnerships, and build rapport with people interested in investing in our city,” DC councilman Vincent Gray, who served a single term as mayor before being unseated by Bowser in the 2014 Democratic primary, told DC News Now.

“I met with people in countless venues, be they overseas, in downtown DC conference rooms, or sometimes at high-profile gatherings,” he said. “I see no controversy in travel that is intended to promote the District in furtherance of opportunity that benefits residents and local businesses.”

Despite the clouds around here for the solar eclipse earlier this month, I hope some of you had a chance to see at least some of the solar eclipse. I was one of the millions who jumped into the car and traveled to the band of totality. I put nearly 1,700 miles on my van and drove through numerous early road construction projects, but it was so worth it! Our original plan was to drive to Corsicana, Texas, south of Dallas, but the weather forecast was just too dicey. So we drove to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but were blown away by the crowds. There were so many people that cellphone service was nearly impossible. We managed to get a less-than-desirable motel room about 40 miles southeast of Cape Girardeau near the Kentucky border.

The next morning, we were up at 3:30. We drove through a dense fog north on I-57 and settled in the little town of Anna, Illinois. They have a huge city park, and we were the first people there. We found a perfect spot near the tennis courts. Gradually, we were joined by other eclipse chasers, but it was far from hoards across the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau. The fog lifted, and the skies became absolutely clear. I had all my specially equipped telescopes and cameras ready.  At 12:42, the moon’s disk made its first contact with the lower right side of the sun. For the next hour and 16 minutes, as the moon slid across the sun, daylight eerily faded, and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees. At 1:58, totality began with the stunning “diamond ring” effect as the last of the sun’s disk was eclipsed.

Attempting to put into words the four minutes and four seconds of totality is a challenge, but I’ll try my best. The experience was overwhelming, with some people yelling and others, like me, shedding tears. The sun’s outer atmosphere was in clear view, subtly and slowly changing shape. What was truly surprising was that even with the naked eye, we could see bright pink prominences arcing above the sun’s surface. I was incredibly fortunate to capture a photograph of them. The skies were dark enough in the vicinity of the eclipsed sun that stars were visible, including the bright planets Jupiter and Venus.

The totality time passed all too quickly. As the moon’s disk began its retreat, we saw the diamond ring effect again. Shortly after, many folks around us were packing up and leaving, but we stayed until the very end, until the moon moved beyond the sun. Then, we joined everyone on the highway and started for home. Traffic was torturous, but the memory of what we witnessed made it much easier to take.

Unfortunately, the next total solar eclipse in the contiguous 48 states won’t be until 2045, but if you don’t mind a long plane ride, there will be many other total eclipses worldwide. Check out the NASA solar eclipse website. Personally, I’m interested in the one on Aug. 12, 2026, over portions of Iceland, Portugal, and Spain. I also would love to catch the one over Northern Alaska on March 30, 2033. You can watch a total eclipse by day and northern lights by night!  I have total solar eclipse fever! Can you tell?
