Things to do in Anaheim, California

Founded in 1857 by 50 German families ('Ana' refers to the nearby Ana river, while 'heim' means 'home' in German), Anaheim was a farming community until Disneyland opened in 1955. Overnight it became the global home of family fun.

With three large theme parks that are constantly adding new attractions, beautiful weather year-round and a family friendly vibe, Anaheim is the perfect place for a family holiday. And there's more to this city than theme parks - there's a trapeze school, a skate park, a flight deck simulator for kids (and adults) and a nearby coast that's full of beautiful beaches, including Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

But at its heart, Anaheim is a city that loves Disney. Go and scream your lungs out on the Incredicoaster, take selfies with Mickey Mouse and Goofy, and eat so much fun food that you start to crave broccoli. Doing Disney in Anaheim is a rite of passage that every joy-loving family aspires to.

Doing the original Disneyland®

Every kid in the entire world wants to go to Disneyland Anaheim. It's the stuff of legends and an experience they'll never forget. And there's a choice of two options, the original Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

Many people choose to buy a three-day pass for Disneyland Park. The pass also includes one 'Magic Morning', where you can enter the park before the general public. There's an endless list of things to do here: you can meet all the Disney Princesses, cartoon characters and Star Wars stars; there are parades, tours, shops and more than 40 restaurants and places to eat; plus there are the classic attractions, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and the 'it's a small world' boat ride. You can also climb aboard the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge or take a spin in the tea cups at the Mad Tea Party.

Take some time before arriving to plan out what you're going to do. Your kids may want to meet Elsa or Tiana at the Royal Hall. They can do that all day, every day. However, parades happen at specific times and some rides, such as the Incredicoaster, are hugely popular, so you might want to target them first thing in the morning. If you get a FASTPASS, ensure you understand how it's designed to be used. Not all rides or experiences accept the FASTPASS, so check before using.

Other things to do in Anaheim

Anaheim attractions and activities are all about fun and frivolity with your family. There are many places to go other than Disneyland, so make sure you leave enough time to spread yourself around the city. Here are a few to check out:

  • Knott's Berry Farm, California's first theme park, welcomes over six million people every year. It has water rides, the Silver Bullet, Supreme Scream, Snoopy and the Peanuts gang and a ghost town railroad adventure
  • Legoland is a must-do for families, and with 60 rides and attractions it can easily occupy a whole day. As well as visiting the 'Block of Fame' to see a range of famous people built from Lego, your kids will love building a Lego car they can actually race around a track
  • Adventure City is great for younger children. Admission is inexpensive and there are heaps of happy-making rides that aren't too scary
  • Camelot Golfland takes mini golf to a whole new level. It also has a Fastcar Raceway, laser tag and bumper cars
  • Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament is an afternoon and evening attraction involving a four-course banquet, sword fights and authentic jousting
  • Pirate's Dinner Adventure is another feast and fun option with live entertainment set in the piratical days of the 1800s
  • Knott's Soak City is a water park of immense proportions. The newest family ride, The Wedge, takes groups on a thrilling and exhilarating trip with surprise drops, twists and turns

Family resorts for a relaxing stay

To make your life easier when you're exploring theme parks in Anaheim, stay within walking distance of Disneyland - it saves having to find a car park and if someone gets exhausted, they can pop back to the hotel for a nap. There are plenty of resorts to choose from. Most have a pool, playground and plenty of family-friendly facilities, because that's what Anaheim is all about.

Courtyard by Marriott is worldwide, so you know you'll get a quality stay. It has a water park with slides, and the one-bedroom suites will suit a family of four. A deluxe family room is fine for a family of six.

Knott's Berry Farm Resort Hotel is only a hop, skip and a jump from Knott's Berry Farm. It has a massive outdoor pool and play area, basketball and tennis courts, and a spa pool for parents. It's very family-friendly and your kids will love it. Plus there's a free shuttle service to Disneyland.

Howard Johnson Hotel has the advantage of having a pirate-ship themed water playground for the kids, with some more grown-up pools for the adults. A two-bedroom suite will happily accommodate a family of five for a few days. This place gets busy, so you need to book well in advance.

Pirate's Dinner Adventure, Anaheim, United States

The best of Orange County

In and around all the fun you're having, you'll need fuel up to keep your family fizzing. There are a few special snacks must be sought out while you're discovering places to eat in Anaheim. A balboa bar is a local treat - a square of vanilla ice-cream on a stick, dipped in chocolate and rolled in lollies or nuts. Also make sure you visit the Crystal Cove Shake Shack for a date and ice-cream smoothie - it's been a favourite of locals since 1946. And don't forget to try a slice of boysenberry pie from Knott's Berry Farm - it's an iconic Anaheim eat.

For an authentic Anaheim souvenir, check out the tiki mugs from Trader Sam's Grog Grotto - the prices include a drink. Orange County is also the original home of Oakley Sunglasses and Vestal Watches, if you want to invest in a memento with longevity. For the extended family, a pair of Mickey Mouse ears can be personalised and themed at Disneyland - they'll be much appreciated by all recipients who are still knee-high to a grasshopper.

House of Blues, Anaheim, United States

Things to do in Anaheim at night

After days of Disney princesses and yahooing on crazy rides, you'd be forgiven for wanting to stay in your hotel and put your feet up. But don't. There's still more to see (you can always sleep on the plane home!).

Heat Ultra Lounge is THE place to be. Right next door to Disneyland, it entertains up to 900 people with DJs and artists from around the world, an amazing lighting and sound system, exclusive VIP rooms, and luxe indoor and outdoor patios.

If bowling is your thing, there are options galore, including Lucky Strike for a blend of bowling and multi-media art. There's also Bowlmor Lanes, where you can hire a 10-lane bowling suite with a full service bar.

For a big dose of R & B, House of Blues offers a non-stop programme of live music gigs. Other music-themed options include Rumba Room Live, Chain Reaction, the Juke Joint and OK 501 Music Studio.

How Much Does a Disneyland Vacation Cost?

Leslie Harvey

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

For many family travelers, the words "Disneyland vacation" and "on a budget" may seem mutually exclusive. Disney vacations have a reputation, and deservedly so, for being expensive. Nevertheless, my family manages to go to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, multiple times a year without breaking the bank. On some trips, we splurge for a special occasion and stay in deluxe accommodations on Disneyland property. On other trips, we find the cheapest hotel that gives us a clean place to lay our heads. On all of our trips, we use miles and points to help offset many of the costs.

How to Calculate the Cost of a Disneyland Vacation

disneyland trip from nz

So, just how much should a vacation at Disneyland really cost for a typical family of four like mine? The major costs include lodging, park tickets and meals. Additional costs like parking, transportation and souvenirs may drive up the price as well, depending on your specific situation. The key to Disney on a budget lies in knowing where and when it makes sense to compromise on various trip elements.

To help you plan for your own vacation, I designed three different itineraries for a Disneyland vacation at different price points. Most travelers to Disneyland go for only a few days, unlike at Walt Disney World where a weeklong vacation is much more common. A typical Disneyland trip would likely be three nights long, so I used that as a baseline.

Some families drive to Disneyland and others fly. Those costs vary widely, so I didn't include the cost of gas or airline tickets in the calculation. Additionally, for purposes of this article, I quoted the current price of park tickets available on Undercover Tourist . No matter what your budget, never pay full Disney price for park tickets. It's easy to save money on Disney tickets by purchasing discounted Disney gift cards or by purchasing tickets through a trusted discount reseller like Undercover Tourist or Getaway Today. The discounts aren't huge, but every dollar counts.

Of course, my family has plenty of miles and points and other discount tricks to help along the way. Hopefully yours does, too. The budget below should at least show you a cash price starting point that you can lower with the right use of travel rewards.

Cost of a Disneyland Vacation on a Tight Budget

disneyland trip from nz

If you are doing Disneyland on a very tight budget, just how low can you go? I managed to put together a three-night trip for a grand total of $1,583.80, including all taxes and tips. This itinerary doesn't require brown bagging all your meals in the parks or staying in an RV. Here's how the numbers work:

For families on a tight budget, an easy way to save money is by staying farther away from the park. The nearby city of Buena Park, California (home to Knott's Berry Farm ), is often a popular choice, as basic but clean hotels and motels there are regularly priced well under $100 a night. But staying that far away comes with additional transportation or parking costs and often means a lot of lost time in transit.

Clarion Hotel Anaheim. Photo courtesy of the hotel.

I therefore often recommend an option for budget travelers that is a tiny bit more expensive but that comes with a lot more convenience: the Clarion Hotel Anaheim . Travel agency Get Away Today regularly offers third-night-free hotel specials at Clarion. In 2019, these packages come with free hot breakfast and free parking. (In 2020, the hotel will transition to $5 for parking and kids will eat free with at least one paying adult for breakfast.) The total hotel cost can be just over $100 a night and the included perks help save money in the rest of the budget.

Total Lodging Cost: $352

Park Tickets

disneyland trip from nz

Park tickets are by far the largest cost in most Disneyland vacations, but there are ways to keep costs down. For a budget traveler on a three-night trip, opt out of all the extras, including the park hopper option and the $15 per person per day MaxPass add-on that lets you book FastPasses on your mobile device. You can easily do one park per day and use the free FastPass kiosks to save time and money.

On a three-night vacation on a budget, I'd recommend only planning two (very full) park days. On your arrival and departure days, you can opt for a lower cost activity like exploring Downtown Disney or swimming in your hotel's pool. Even if you indulge in a mini-splurge like dinner and bowling at Splitsville or a character dinner at Goofy's Kitchen (located outside the park at the Disneyland Hotel ), you'll still pay far less per person than you would for the extra day in the park.

Total Park Ticket Cost: $827.80 (two-day non-hopper tickets without MaxPass for two adults and two kids)

Food can potentially be a huge variable on a Disneyland trip. Extras like drinks and snacks can really add up quickly for a family. Eating at a table service restaurant where you'd need to tip a server adds even more.

It's certainly possible to go to Disneyland incredibly cheaply by packing sack lunches like some of the locals -- but I'd argue you are missing a huge part of the Disney experience that way.

disneyland trip from nz

For purposes of this experiment and for ease of planning, I priced out a budget-friendly meal itinerary for a family of four where families eat both lunch and dinner at a quick service venue like Hungry Bear Restaurant in Disneyland park, Flo's V8 Cafe in Disney California Adventure or Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney. I assumed the budget-minded family would stay in a hotel (like Clarion) that offers free breakfast.

The budget assumes each adult would order an entree at each meal (that usually includes a side) and that kids would each order a kids meal. Most kids meals include milk or a juice box as part of the cost. I assumed adults would drink tap water, so add about $5 per person per meal if you drink soda or even more if you plan to consume any alcohol. I also budgeted enough extra for a single snack per day per family member like a churro or Mickey ice cream bar.

The result? Not too budget-busting. And guests can save even more money off this total by splitting entrees, having adults eat kids meals or bringing a few snacks into the parks.

Total Meal & Food Cost: $354

Parking/Transportation, Souvenirs and Other Costs

There are a number of other potential costs in a Disneyland vacation, but those vary greatly. If you fly to Disneyland , you'll have to figure in a shuttle or the cost of an Uber from the airport. That cost is quite a bit less if your family flies into nearby John Wayne Airport (SNA) instead of LAX.

For purposes of this article, I assumed families will drive and need parking for a car. And I further assumed a budget traveler will stay at a hotel with free parking that is also within walking distance of Disneyland. From the Clarion, for example, guests could simply walk to the parks. Guests could also cross the street to Disney's Toy Story parking lot and take the free shuttle to the parks.

Souvenir merchandise at Disneyland for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. (Image by Leslie Harvey.)

Of course, it's probably impossible to get away from Disneyland scott-free with no other extras. I'd budget an extra $25 per child for a souvenir or two. One of my family's inexpensive favorites is to collect pressed pennies. They cost $. 51 each to make, and folios to display them are available in the Disney gift shops for under $10.

Total Cost of Everything Else: $50

TOTAL BUDGET DISNEYLAND VACATION COST: $1,583.80

Cost of a Disneyland Vacation on a Midrange Budget

Disneyland California Adventure

If you want to take your Disneyland vacation up a notch with an extra park day, a slightly nicer hotel and a few fancier table service meals, just how much more would that be? I priced out a typical moderately priced Disneyland trip that costs $2,735.55, including all taxes and tips, which is a little over $1,100 more than the budget option.

There are a lot of moderately priced hotels within easy walking distance of Disneyland, so vacationers who are planning a midrange vacation have a myriad choices. While many of these hotels are independently owned, an increasing number of them are now part of chains where you can use hotel points to save money. Check out TPG's guide to points-friendly hotels near Disneyland for some of the options.

disneyland trip from nz

If you are paying cash, expect to find a lot of more-than-adequate options around $170 to $200 a night before taxes. Some of the hotels regularly in this range include the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel & Water Playground , Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort and Hyatt House at Anaheim Resort/Convention Center . I selected a two queen standard room at the Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort for a typical traveling family of four. (Though using a Marriott up to 35k certificate there from a card such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card can quickly knock down your trip cost).

Total Lodging Cost: $612

A family taking a Disneyland vacation on a moderate budget can and should splurge for the full three days in the parks on a three-night vacation, assuming arrival and departure times allow for it.

As explained in the budget travel section above, there are two typical add-ons for Disneyland tickets: the park hopper option and Disney MaxPass. If both aren't in the budget, choose one to give you more flexibility and convenience. The total ticket cost comes out about the same for three-day park tickets for two adults and two children: $1,267.80 for three-day non-hopper tickets with MaxPass versus $1,277.80 for three-day hopper tickets without MaxPass.

I'd personally choose MaxPass over the park hopper option because MaxPass allows guests to ride so much more by making FastPass selections on their smartphone. If you know how to maximize it, it's easy to ride every thrill ride in either park in a single day.

Total Park Ticket Cost: $1,267.80 (three-day non-hopper tickets for two adults and two kids with MaxPass)

disneyland trip from nz

For guests not on the strictest of budgets, a few table service meals on a Disneyland vacation are a must-do and are part of the Disney experience. (Here are our favorite restaurants at Disneyland , and they aren't all budget busters.)

I priced out an itinerary that included a mix of quick-service meals for lunch at restaurants like Alien Pizza Planet, Hungry Bear and Flo's V8 Cafe and table service meals at dinner like Cafe Orleans, Wine Country Trattoria and Ballast Point. I didn't entirely skimp on the extras either. In addition to entrees, I included the cost of nonalcoholic drinks at dinner and the occasional shared appetizer or dessert as well.

Ballast Point Brewery & Kitchen at Downtown Disney District at Disneyland. (Photo credit: Joshua Sudock/Disneyland Resort)

The Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort is one of the few Fairfield Inn hotels that does not include free breakfast, so I included the cost of breakfast at the hotel food court or at nearby Panera Bread or McDonald's in the overall food budget. There's also a bit more wiggle room in the snack budget for every family member to have a snack a day, including some more premium snack choices.

The result ends up being roughly double what the budget vacationer would spend on food, but still fairly reasonable for all the sit-down dining included.

Total Meal & Food Cost: $699

Last but certainly not least is the cost of all the little extras. The Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort charges $24 per day for parking. It is within easy walking distance of the parks so there's no need for other parking or shuttle costs. I further assumed a family on a midrange budget would spend a bit more on souvenirs than budget travelers.

Total Cost of Everything Else: $147

TOTAL MIDRANGE DISNEYLAND VACATION COST: $2,735.55

Cost of a Disneyland Vacation on a Luxury Travel Budget

disneyland trip from nz

Luxury-loving travelers taking a Disneyland vacation can certainly find ways to drop tons of cash. There are splurges like a $125 per person princess character meal, VIP tour guides at $425 to $600 per hour, and much more. I didn't select these extraordinary costly options, but still managed easily to allocate $6,137.55 for a vacation of just three nights. That's roughly four times what the budget travel family paid and more than double that of the family on a midrange budget. Ouch. No wonder Disney vacations have the reputation they do.

Luxury travelers almost certainly want to stay on-property at Disneyland, as there are not any other high-end hotels within walking distance of Disneyland. The most expensive and luxurious hotel near Disneyland is Disney's Grand Californian Hotel , adjacent to Disney California Adventure park with its own private entrance.

disneyland trip from nz

Staying at an on-property Disneyland hotel almost always makes lodging costs exceed the cost of park tickets, so prepare for sticker shock. Standard rooms at the Grand Californian are often well over $600 per night, not including taxes. Club level rooms are almost always over $1,000 a night. I assumed an intermediate splurge of a premium view room, at a cost of $825 a night plus tax.

disneyland trip from nz

A more economical option is renting DVC points to stay at the Grand Californian, but finding availability is always a challenge so plan far in advance if you want to go that route. Luxury travelers could also save a bit more staying at the slightly less expensive, but still fabulous, Disneyland Hotel .

disneyland trip from nz

Total Lodging Cost: $2,895.75

On a splurge trip at Disneyland, both the park hopper ticket option and the MaxPass add-on feature are must-haves for flexibility and convenience. For a three-night vacation, I'd recommend a three-day park ticket with both of these features to see and do the most.

disneyland trip from nz

Total Park Ticket Cost: $1,457.80 (three-day hopper tickets for two adults and two kids with MaxPass)

There are so many dining experiences at Disneyland worthy of a spurge, but it's impossible to do them all in a single trip without being so full that you won't have the energy to walk around the park. So I priced out a dining itinerary that a real family would actually want to eat rather than just choosing all the nicest restaurants all of the time.

disneyland trip from nz

That said, a typical luxury traveler with a bigger budget will likely want to do at least one Disneyland character meal . A dining package for either of the two nighttime shows, Fantasmic or World of Color, is also a must-do. These packages include a meal at one of the higher-end restaurants like Carthay Circle that would probably be on your wish list already. These packages also come with reserved seating for the nighttime show.

For most other meals, a typical traveling family would likely alternate between table service and quick-service restaurants, often grabbing breakfast on the go at restaurants like GCH Craftsman Grill and La Brea. I also budgeted $50 per day for snacks to cover the cost of some of the more premium snack options as well as a little extra for an alcoholic drink for the adults at several meals.

Total Meal & Food Cost: $1,309

Parking at the Grand Californian is $25 per night, but there are no other transportation costs involved with a stay there thanks to its prime walking-distance location. Families on a bigger budget, though, can likely drop quite a bit of cash on souvenirs. After all, there are $200 lightsabers and $100 droids in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge alone. So I assumed a family of four would likely spring for one big ticket souvenir item like a lightsaber as well as a number of smaller items, for a total cost of $400.

disneyland trip from nz

Total Cost of Everything Else: $475

TOTAL LUXURY DISNEYLAND VACATION COST: $6,137.55

Bottom Line

Disneyland vacations ultimately are what you make of them. They can certainly be done at a very reasonable cost with the right preparation and without making tremendous sacrifices. But there are also so many places where a vacationer is tempted to splurge. Choose where you spend your cash wisely and use points and miles for all the rest.

Hi there - to park hop or not?

First time visit for my husband and children, I have been once almost 30 years ago!

Would you recommend 2 days Disneyland and 1 day CA ? Doing one park per day would save us money, but perhaps it is better practice to pay the extra for park hopper? We would pay for genie +

Also, am I right to assume at this late stage that we would be unable to book for any onsite dining experiences?

I really want to take my kids to disneyland, and this is likely a one off due to the expense (which is even worse with the exchange into NZ $) but at the same time I see so much negativity around long lines, having to be glued to your phone etc that I am also quite nervous!

Thanks in advance for anyone who has time to answer...

When there's a lot of traffic or a back up I just play some music and sing to it. Well, I pretty much do that all the time unless I have a passenger who I talk with. It's just that when there is a lot less traffic it's more enjoyable because I can concentrate on the music more and feel more freedom.

You can use Bluetooth and you phone to access the Pandora app or your music on your phone or for a fee add Sirius XM to your rental, which is fun because there are so many options of types of music. The LA radio station KOST plays strickly Christmas songs during the holiday season and also play dedications, some to service members.

The freeway traffic isn't a big issue except when trying to get somewhere at a certain time. So you just plan accordingly.

Using a GPS phone app that gives verbal directions and tells you where you go step by step is helpful and takes the stress out of finding your way.

Just for fun, go to You Tube and look for the clip from the movie Lala Land called Another Day of Sun. It shows an imaginary event during an LA traffic jam with a lot of fun music.

disneyland trip from nz

It just took my cousins two and a quarter hours to get from Venice to Orange... it's not rush hour right now, just lots of people on the road.

As I said, it's part of life here—but if you're not prepared for it, it can cause a lot of grief. I personally try not to spend too many blood pressure points on it because there's not a dadgum thing I can do about it except fume.

You can absolutely do a day trip to LA. Just don't overplan and then stress out if traffic gets bad for some reason (an accident, someone blocking a lane of a major boulevard for a delivery, the misanthropes at Caltrans deciding to do work, amnesia drops falling from the sky and making everyone forget which pedal makes the go, etc.)

Never made that mistake again but first trip with my wife, I unlocked the car and she headed for the LHS and jumped in. Realising immediately she was in the drivers seat she jumped out of the car so fast it may as well have been on fire! Don’t think I’ve seen her move quite so quickly ever again 😁

We also drove down to San Diego and I was expecting these long traffic jams but didn't really experience anything like that. We got a "Go City" pass which strangley included a visit to Knotts Berry Farm back near Disneyland so we decided to go there for a day too. Well what do you know- turned put to be the kids favorite theme park even the one who apparently hates roller coasters lol. So yes I definitely add my vote to going here, the staff are truly lovely (even pulling faces in photos and offering to take photos of us all , such a great atmosphere).

My suggestion would be to look at booking a dinner at Medieval Times. I promise the whole family will love it.

A word of caution about Medevil Times.

There has been a strike there. Not sure if it's still going on. I stayed across the street at the Courtyard Buena Park in late July and could hear the strikers with a loud speaker. Luckily for me it wasn't all day and night and not enough volume to disturb guests of the hotel. But for anyone considering going there I'd caution to make sure that strike was settled.

Ok kiwi people, where is the best place to buy the 10 day hopper tickets from?

' class=

We recently bought ours online through Air New Zealand holidays. They are currently selling them for $362NZ and they send you actual tickets rather than vouchers which you would need to redeem at the ticket booths. Most travel agents in NZ will sell them to you over the counter for roughly the same price but we found Air NZ to be the most convienient. Hope that helps.

I only need accommodation for part of my trip

Visit Disneyland® Tokyo

At the captivating Tokyo Disneyland® theme resort, the movies of Walt Disney spring to life with a host of family-friendly attractions. Enjoy roller coasters and fairground rides, watch music and dance performances and meet world-famous Disney characters. You can even spend the night at a themed hotel. The resort opened in 1983 and was the first Disney Park outside of the U.S.

Start your visit at Tokyo Disneyland® Park, also known as The Kingdom of Dreams and Magic. Immerse yourself in the world of Disney’s adored characters in the seven themed areas. Visit Mickey Mouse and his friends in Toontown or relive classic fairytales in Fantasyland. Ride a tall log flume in Critter Country or explore futuristic technology in Tomorrowland. Cruise on a Mississippi riverboat or ride a runaway mine train in Westernland. Visit the Cinderella Castle to discover the story of the much-loved fairytale princess.

Don’t miss the World Bazaar, where you’ll find recreations of 20th-century American shops and restaurants. It’s a good place to have lunch or purchase snacks and souvenirs. Check the park’s schedule for live shows and parades. A highlight is the Nighttime Parade, featuring illuminated floats and dancing Disney characters.

Discover the legends of the sea celebrated in Disney movies at Tokyo DisneySea® Park. Take a ride on Sinbad’s boat or follow the adventures of Indiana Jones. Glide along a canal on a Venetian gondola or journey to the centre of the earth with Captain Nemo. Watch firework displays accompanied by Disney songs.

Tokyo Disneyland® is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Tokyo. It is easily accessible via public trains and buses. There are direct bus and train connections from Narita International Airport. Paid parking is available for up to 20,000 vehicles. A paid monorail links the various attractions and several hotels, which include three Disney-themed hotels.

Tokyo Disneyland® is open daily. Allow a full day to visit each of Tokyo Disneyland® Park and Tokyo DisneySea® Park. Check the resort’s official website for details of admission fees, including information on multiday passes. Purchase tickets online to avoid standing in line at the park’s ticket booths. Cut costs by bringing your own food to enjoy at designated picnic areas.

Reviews of disneyland® tokyo, 1/5 - terrible.

Seriously Disney needs to put a cap on patrons that visit, I think the whole population of Japan was there when we went (xmas/ny break)

Line up for rides was extremely long and fast passes sold out early

Very crowded but interesting

We found Disneyland better then Disney Sea but not as big as Calafornia and therefore not as much to do. 2 days maximum required, but probably don’t even need that for both.

Make an effort and get there early

5/5 - Excellent

Ride lines are around 100 minutes for rides such as Space Mountain and similar coasters, recommend arriving early and getting fast passes for later times to skip queues.

2023 EXPERIENCES - DISNEY

Disneyland. celebrate 100 years of wonder, bridget fogarty, hot marketing, plans her 16th trip to the happiest place on earth to take part in the 100 year celebrations., why holiday at disneyland.

A photo of Bridget and Mickey Mouse

MY HOT TIPS

Disney Parks now require reservations to limit the number of people in the parks per day. For Disneyland in California, you can only book 3 months in advance. For Walt Disney World in Orlando, you can book up to a year in advance. Reservations can be made at the time of booking your ticket.

You absolutely need to download the Disneyland or Walt Disney World app. This will be your lifeline in the park. They can hold your ticket information, you can order quick service meals so you don't have to wait in the queue, find out how long wait times are for rides, book your 'Lightning Lane' reservation using the Genie+ service, or an 'Individual Lightning Lane' reservation, find out where the characters are for photo ops and much more!

Bridget---DCA-Pier

MY FAVOURITE HIGHLIGHTS

With new night time shows and the re-opening of Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland Resort, this is a celebration that can't be missed! High on my 'must do' 2023 visit is seeing the 'World of Color - One' show which will be showcasing the history of Disney using lasers and lights. And I can't wait to experience the new Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railroad ride - I do love rollercoasters!

Bridget---Star-Wars

BEST TIME TO GO

Anytime is a good time to go to Disney ! There is not really such a thing as a 'quiet' season anymore. For Disneyland - just remember if going in July/August it will be extremely hot waiting in lines. Christmas/New Year's is the busiest time in the Parks and there are various 'after dark' parties that happen throughout the year. These are separate ticketed events and usually sell out pretty quick. One of the most in demand is the Halloween parties. No one does a Halloween party quite like Disney !

Disney Cruise Line brings magical sailings to Australia and New Zealand for the first time

NEWS DISNEY ANZ

Disney cruise line brings magical sailings to australia and new zealand for the first time.

Brad Hatch, Director of Corporate Communcations

‘Disney Magic at Sea’ sailings in Australia and New Zealand for a limited time from October 2023 through February 2024.

For the first time, Disney Cruise Line is coming to the shores of Australia and New Zealand to offer magical vacations created especially for local residents during a limited season from late 2023.

The ‘Disney Magic at Sea’ sailings will bring all of the magic of Disney to one amazing holiday experience with favourite characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars on board, plus imaginative dining and spectacular entertainment – all in one cruise.

The special sailings aboard the Disney Wonder range from two to six nights and will depart from four home ports: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia, as well as Auckland, New Zealand.

“ We are so excited to bring the magic of a Disney cruise vacation close to home for guests in Australia and New Zealand, ” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “ On these limited-time sailings, the ship is the destination, and our amazing Disney Cruise Line crew can’t wait to welcome guests on board as they are immersed in their favourite stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. ”

The inaugural sailing of this limited season departs October 28, 2023 from Sydney. Bookings open to the general public from Thursday September 29, 2022 at 8am AEST / 11am NZDT.

While on board, Disney Cruise Line guests will be immersed in the magic of Disney with unforgettable character encounters with favourite Disney friends including Captain Mickey Mouse, Captain Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Pluto, and spectacular entertainment including original Broadway-quality shows.

Guests will also enjoy incredible dining experiences with imaginative restaurants including Tiana’s Place, where guests can meet Princess Tiana herself and enjoy a taste of New Orleans cooking, and Animator’s Palate, an interactive dining experience that celebrates Disney animation.

Children will have their own “Frozen” adventures in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, along with a multi-level replica of Andy’s Room from “Toy Story” and a place to summon their inner super hero at the Marvel Super Hero Academy. Adults even have their own exclusive spaces to rest and relax, including the adults-only Quiet Cove pool, sophisticated dining at Palo and the rejuvenating Senses Spa & Salon.

All sailings will include health and safety measures considering up-to-date guidance from public health authorities in Australia and New Zealand and medical experts. Disney Cruise Line’s current health and safety protocols are outlined on disneycruise.com.

Best APP ever!

I absolutely love this app! It’s so easy to use and easy to book reservations :)

Big let down, Waste of a day

We flew from New Zealand to come to Disneyland with our three young children. Was my wife’s childhood dream. They woke up super excited, within the 2 hours of waiting to get near a ride after trying to download a app which we couldn’t due not having data on our phones, they wanted to leave. Told to move away from our seat when buzz light year turned up was also not nice after spending 20 mins walking around to find a seat only to be asked to move.
FastPass vs MaxPass is everything the marketing department could possibly do to make the experience very annoying and confusing. The app doesn't help with the confusion, it just makes things worse.

Frequently asked questions

It depends how many theme parks are on your to-do list! There are three main theme parks, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and Walt Disney World. Here’s where it gets tricky, Walt Disney World is actually four parks in one – Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Island of Adventure. If you want to go, go, go, you could do six parks in six days but you’ll need a holiday to recover from your holiday! Ten days would be ideal to add a couple of rest days in between.

Light layers, comfortable walking shoes, a backpack, sunscreen, a hat and a sense of fun and adventure. The rest will depend on the time of year you plan to travel. Oh, and hot tip, if you’re planning on hitting the theme parks, buy your tickets ahead of time.

One of the main reasons travellers flock to Orlando is to discover the magic of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Where to go depends on whether you and your tribe prefer Mickey and Disney princesses or Harry Potter and Marvel, and this in itself is a whole research topic. Outside of the theme parks, Orlando is home to the Kennedy Space Centre as well as plenty of museums, shopping malls, galleries and even a science centre.

Life happens - we get it! Read more here .

This is like saying which is better – white chocolate or chilli chocolate. Each offers something different that will appeal to different travellers. Walt Disney World boasts all of your favourites including Cinderella Castle, water parks, Mickey and friends, while Universal has Harry Potter and Marvel. Walt Disney World is enormous, meaning you are often waiting for transport, while Universal is more compact. Both parks offer a magical experience, so ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

If you are looking for pleasant weather, slightly smaller crowds and deals on accommodation, aim to visit from March to May. If you enjoy sweating up a storm, waiting in long lines and paying premium prices, summertime is for you.

Eat, sleep, theme park, repeat. Just kidding, there’s so much to see and do in Orlando other than theme parks. You can eat your way around Orlando’s burgeoning restaurant scene, head to the museums or the award-winning Orlando Science Centre, shop up a storm at The Florida Mall, explore the Everglades National Park, visit the Kennedy Space Centre or take a dip in Crystal River.

Disney Magic at Sea cruise setting sail from New Zealand in 2023

Watch: A glimpse at what's on offer with Disney Magic at Sea. Credits: Supplied/Disney / Newshub.

Aotearoa's Disney fans will be thrilled to hear that the company is sending one of its themed cruise ships to New Zealand and Australia for the first time ever.

The Disney Magic at Sea sailings are scheduled to depart Auckland on five nights in November and December 2023, after the first Australian sailing departs Sydney on October 28.

More from Newshub

The special sailings will range from two to six nights and are said to include "favourite characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars on board, plus imaginative dining and spectacular entertainment".

"Broadway-quality" shows are promised among the entertainment offerings, along with Frozen adventures in Disney's Oceaneer Club, a multi-level replica of Andy's Room from Toy Story and a Marvel SuperHero Academy.

Themed dining spots on the ship include Tiana's Place, which offers New Orleans cuisine and Princess Tiana herself, along with Animator's Palate, which is described as an interactive Disney dining experience.

The cruise also features adults-only areas including a pool, spa and salon, and restaurant.

"We are so excited to bring the magic of a Disney cruise vacation close to home for guests in Australia and New Zealand," said Josh D'Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

"On these limited-time sailings, the ship is the destination, and our amazing Disney Cruise Line crew can't wait to welcome guests on board as they are immersed in their favourite stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars."

Disney announced the cruise at its D23 Expo over the weekend.

The New Zealand sailings start at US$760 per person on the DisneyCruiseLine website, which is the equivalent of around NZ$1245 at the time of publishing.

Bookings open to the general public on September 29.
